Summary

Saint Cyril addresses those preparing for Baptism with a clear, concise teaching style that respects the limits of his listeners and asks the Holy Spirit to strengthen both speaker and audience. Moses refuses Joshua’s request to restrain Eldad and Medad, rejects envy of others’ spiritual progress, and tells Joshua to await the proper time for his own calling. The lecture concludes that the Holy Spirit was active among the righteous and prophets of the Old Testament, while after Pentecost the Spirit is offered to all believers according to their receptivity.

Beloved, we are still studying the Catechetical Lectures of Saint Cyril, specifically Lecture Sixteen, paragraph twenty-five. The subject Saint Cyril presents and explains in this lecture is the Holy Spirit. Of course, we have already said a great deal, and the next lecture is likewise devoted to the Holy Spirit. He now proceeds to make several further points, because he is trying to give his catechumens—the enlightened, that is, those already prepared to receive Holy Baptism—as complete a picture of the Holy Spirit as he can.

He writes: “This Spirit descended upon the seventy elders in the time of Moses. But, beloved, do not let the length of my words weary you.” Saint Cyril is a marvelous teacher, an outstanding educator, and perhaps his method ought to be studied and imitated. A university professor has written a study of Saint Cyril’s Catechetical Lectures, but on a different subject: “Missionary Elements in Saint Cyril.” It is quite a substantial book. Now someone ought to undertake another study. I offer this as a suggestion to those of you who are theologians.

It would be demanding work—do not imagine that such things are easy—but someone should prepare a study of the educational and teaching principles found in Saint Cyril’s Catechetical Lectures.

Educational principles and methods of teaching. He very often says, “For the sake of keeping the discourse within due measure, we shall stop here.” What does that mean? “I do not wish to tire you any further.” For, as the late Trembelas says in his book on preaching, during the first half hour of a sermon you build something up, and during the next half hour you tear it down, because the congregation has grown tired.

Of course, he is not referring to a lecture, which usually lasts around forty-five minutes. Talks lasting an hour have become customary, just like academic lectures. He is referring to the liturgical sermon, because the listener is already tired, then begins to grow bored, and finally stops paying attention. So what you built during the first half hour, you spoil and tear down during the second. Here, then, Saint Cyril—who naturally wishes to say as much as he possibly can, and for this reason gives two lectures—says: “But the length of my words, beloved...” The length of my words, beloved; what we have said has gone on at some length. Forgive me: “Do not let it weary you.”

May it not cause you weariness or fatigue. It is as though he were saying to them: “Please, I know that I have said a great deal. I know that I have tired you, but pay attention just a little longer. Look, we are nearly finished now.” And indeed, I can say that Saint Cyril brings his lecture to an end shortly afterward. I say that he finishes; we, however, may take an entire talk—and then a second one—to cover it. Saint Cyril delivered these words orally, of course, although we now see them written down; he did not write them himself. Stenographers recorded them as he spoke. It appears, however, that he later reviewed what had been written and perhaps polished it somewhat. Yet he preserved the character of spoken language, with all its liveliness.

The same happened with other Fathers, such as the holy John Chrysostom, who apparently did not review most of his homilies afterward. He delivered them, several stenographers recorded them, but he did not go back to correct or polish them. So here you see an element relating to teaching as a whole—to the educational art of teaching or, as I told you, to teaching method. What should we say about his teaching method? Saint Cyril is without equal. Balanos says this in his Patrology: Saint Cyril is without equal in the art of teaching—that is, he is clear.

Whatever is taught must be clear: no obscure ideas, but short sentences; no difficult words, but words from everyday speech. Saint Cyril is not conceited; he does not use pompous words or grandiose turns of phrase. All these are principles of good teaching. Unless I am mistaken—I am not a schoolteacher—teaching method is the subject through which we learn how to teach. If I am mistaken, please forgive me; I have many teachers among my listeners. As I understand it, it concerns the way in which we teach each subject, because every subject requires its own approach. Mathematics is taught in one way, while Greek, language, and grammar are taught in another.

Our dearly departed grammar, forgive me—that is what I mean. Religious education, for example, is taught in yet another way, and so forth. You understand, then, that teaching method is an important subject. If you do not know how to present something... Even in the sermon itself, the manner in which we present the Sunday sermon during the Divine Liturgy differs according to the passage we have from Holy Scripture—whether it is an epistle reading, a Gospel passage, and so forth. We must therefore master and understand this. And I have explained to you that Saint Cyril is without equal. He is a teacher—a true teacher. “May He Himself, of whom we speak, grant strength to each of those who speak...”

“...and to you who listen.” “May He grant”—that is, may He give, may He bestow. “He of whom we speak”—and of whom are we speaking, if not the Holy Spirit? That is our subject. May He give strength to every one of you, both to those who speak and to those who listen. In other words, may the Spirit of God strengthen me, and may the Spirit of God also strengthen you who are listening. Saint Cyril expresses this beautifully. “This Spirit descended, as I said, upon the seventy elders in the time of Moses.”

You see, he had begun to address this very subject. But because he inserted the remark, “Please, if you have grown tired, take courage for just a little longer,” he now repeats the sentence with which he began and returns to his subject: how those seventy elders in the time of Moses received the Holy Spirit.

“I tell you these things as well, so that I may demonstrate...” I tell you these things to show you that He knows all things. Who does? The Holy Spirit. He knows everything and acts as He wills. He acts as He chooses. “The seventy elders were chosen, and the Lord descended in a cloud, took of the Spirit that was upon Moses, and placed it upon the seventy men, the elders—not because the Spirit was divided, but because grace was distributed according to the vessels and the capacity of those receiving it. Sixty-eight were present and prophesied, but Eldad and Medad were not present, so that it might be shown that Moses was not the one who bestowed...”

“...the Spirit who was at work. Eldad and Medad, though called but not present with the others, nevertheless prophesied.” He then proceeds to the next paragraph, continuing the same subject. We shall examine it a little later. I read the whole passage so that I could relate it to you, because it truly is a narrative. And I can tell you that, until the end of this lecture, he gives examples from the Old Testament of the presence of the Holy Spirit. In the next lecture, as he tells us, he will speak about examples from the New Testament. It is well known that Moses exercised administrative and judicial authority.

He also had the task of receiving commandments from God and conveying them to the people, or bringing the concerns of the people before God. He was a mediator. It is also well known what happened to his sister Miriam, who resented the thought that their brother should be the only mediator, and who drew Aaron into her complaint as well. You know the story. God then became angry with Miriam and summoned all three siblings to the Tent of Meeting, where He rebuked her. What a fearful thing! Can you imagine God rebuking you, my beloved? Do you understand? And at that very moment Miriam became leprous.

She was accusing her brother Moses and, of course, adding all sorts of things: “Why did Moses have to go and take that dark-skinned woman?” For he had taken a wife from the land of Midian, a daughter of Jethro the priest. Miriam was jealous—not of her sister-in-law, but because Moses had the privilege of speaking with God—and so she found other grounds on which to accuse her brother: that his wife was dark-skinned, that she was unattractive, and that he had not chosen a wife from among their own people. These are the sorts of things people say when they want to conceal their jealousy. Then God became angry, and Miriam was covered with leprosy. Moses and Aaron fell facedown and pleaded with God to forgive her. He forgave her, but...

He sent her outside the camp for a week, after which she recovered. He forgave her. Here, however, is an observation for you—take it as a lesson in spiritual formation. Please, take this lesson to heart. He did not heal her immediately, but said that He would heal her after one week. Under the Law, every leper had to leave the camp and could not remain among those who were healthy. So Miriam left the camp and lived alone, outside the camp of the Hebrews. How does God explain this? Listen: “If,” He says, “her father had spat in her face...” How often, when we do something wrong to our father...

He may say to us: “Shame on you! Have you no shame?” The child whose father has shown him such contempt withdraws. Because of that shame, would there not naturally be a certain distance between the child and the father? This is so psychologically true. If we have hurt our own father and driven him to such indignation that he spits before us in contempt, can we begin joking affectionately with him at that very moment? Is this not profoundly educational and psychologically perceptive? For this reason God says that she will remain outside for a few days. It is like what a spiritual father may do with someone who comes to Holy Confession: “Tell me...”

“When do you receive Holy Communion? Every Sunday? Then, because of this sin you committed, you will not receive Holy Communion this Sunday, but the following Sunday.” Do you understand? Yet what do you do? I have heard this from so many parents. The child has not even asked forgiveness; instead, you feel sorry for your child because you scolded him, and you yourselves begin to cry, embrace him, and kiss him. And you believe that you are doing your child a good service, an educational service—unless you believe yourselves more divine than God and think that we know more about raising children than God does. Did you hear that, please? This is not my subject now; it arose in passing. Moses, then, had many duties—that is the point I wish to reach—and he could not manage them all.

He simply could not manage them all. How could he cope with a people numbering two million? He even judged minor disputes. If two people quarreled, Moses had to hear the case. Then his father-in-law Jethro said to him: “Listen, my son. Why are you wearing yourself out when you cannot possibly keep up? I will tell you what to do. Choose seventy elders who possess sound judgment. Appoint them as judges over the lesser matters, and keep only the major cases for yourself. In this way your burden will be lightened.” Pay attention to something very important here. Let me explain it.

Further on, we shall encounter many stories, but if we were to recount them all, honestly, we would not finish until June. So I shall relate only this one now, perhaps one more, and pass quickly over the rest—I am warning you in advance. Here, then, we see something remarkable: Moses, though inspired by God, accepts important counsel from his father-in-law Jethro, who was still partly an idolater. Why did God not reveal directly to Moses how he should organize his work? So that Moses might be humbled and receive counsel from an ordinary man who did not even belong to the people of God.

Did you hear that we can receive advice—sometimes wise advice—even from a little child? Do you know that? So, in order to humble the great Moses, who had beheld God, God left him without an answer here; He left the matter open. And because Moses was truly humble, he accepted his father-in-law’s proposal. He summoned seventy elders, and afterward God told him, “Your father-in-law advised you rightly. These seventy will gather there at the Tent of Testimony, and I will take of the Holy Spirit that is upon you and place it upon these seventy elders, so that, having the Spirit of God themselves, they may judge as you would judge.”

Let us leave that there. They gathered together. The day and hour were appointed, and they came from throughout the camp, leaving their tents and assembling there. For some reason unknown to us, two of them, Eldad and Medad, had been chosen but did not come. When we say “chosen,” we do not mean that a vote was held. It was a selection, not a ballot, for the people put forward these seventy men.

It was not done by voting in the usual way; they were simply chosen, just as the Christians of the Church in Jerusalem chose the seven deacons. It was an election. Here we see something remarkable: the one who has been chosen, even before receiving the Spirit of God, already begins to have a foretaste of the Holy Spirit. In the same way, from the moment a candidate for the episcopacy is elected, he is no longer simply a priest. He stands, as it were, between priest and bishop; he has been raised to something higher. He is the one designated, the one elected. This is very significant, and all these things have their foundation in Holy Scripture.

So what happened? As I told you, those two did not come for some reason, perhaps because of circumstances beyond their control. They may have fallen ill or suffered some misfortune; I do not know. Something may have happened to them. They were human beings. Then God, as it says here, “placed the Spirit upon the seventy men, the elders—not by dividing the Spirit, but by distributing grace according to the vessels and the capacity of those receiving it.” In other words, He did not take the Holy Spirit away from Moses. Rather, this shows that Moses possessed the Holy Spirit, and God took from what rested upon him in order to give to the others. Each received according to the vessel he possessed—that is, according to his strength and capacity.

Elsewhere Saint Cyril again speaks about the Holy Spirit—perhaps in the next Catechetical Lecture—and says that the Holy Spirit is offered to each person according to the bucket, the vessel, he brings with him. When you go to the sea, he says, you draw water according to the size of the vessel you have. If your vessel is small, then although the ocean is vast, you will take only as much water as your vessel can contain. So if you carry a large vessel—if you have great capacity—you will receive much of the Spirit of God. But the Spirit Himself...

The gifts are distributed; the gifts of grace are distributed. The Holy Spirit Himself is not divided. The Holy Spirit is indivisible. He is a person and cannot be divided. So when God took the Holy Spirit that rested upon Moses and gave Him to the sixty-eight, they immediately began to prophesy, as a sign that they had received the Holy Spirit. You should know that this was a kind of Pentecost, a first Pentecost. Just as those one hundred and twenty people in the upper room—on the day of Pentecost—received the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues and to prophesy, so here the sixty-eight began to prophesy. I should only explain that...

The verb “to prophesy” does not mean merely to utter prophecies in the usual sense, that is, to foretell something. It can also mean to speak forth. In ancient Greek, a “prophet” was one who proclaimed a message, not only someone able to foretell the future. Thus, when we encounter the word “prophet” in the New Testament, it does not always mean one who predicts the future. Of course, there are such cases, as with Agabus the prophet and others. But chiefly, those who prophesied were those who proclaimed the word of God. You may ask, what distinguished them? Their words came forth with a certain power and force.

Their speech had precision and zeal, along with other qualities that an ordinary orator or speaker would not possess. There was inspiration; there was something different about it. And so these sixty-eight began to prophesy. Now listen: the two who were absent—and they were not together, for one was in one part of the camp and the other somewhere else—also began to prophesy. This shows that, because they had been chosen, even though they were absent, the Spirit of God was not prevented from bestowing His gifts upon them...

Upon those who were absent. In other words, the Spirit of God sees the whole matter and does not say, “I will remain only with those who came here, while the two who are absent will receive no share in this gift.” The story continues in the next section, paragraph twenty-six. It says, “Have you heard? Have you learned what happened?”

A great commotion arose. This shows that their words had an extraordinary intensity; there was something immensely powerful and awe-inspiring about them. The people saw them prophesying and speaking in this manner because they had been filled with the Spirit of God, and immediately went to report it to Moses. It seems that someone first told Joshua son of Nun, who was still young at the time, and he then told his master Moses, whose servant he was and whom he would later succeed: “Have you heard? Do you know what has happened? These men did not come, yet they are filled with the Holy Spirit. Restrain them.” But Moses said, “I cannot restrain them, for this grace is from Heaven.” How could I restrain them? Am I the one who can stop them?

The Spirit of God has visited them as well. This grace is from Heaven, so how could I restrain them? “So far am I from restraining them that I myself possess the Spirit only by grace.” Do you want to see how little power I have to stop them, and how I too possess the Spirit of God only by grace? Therefore, he says, “I do not think you said this out of envy.” Moses believed that Joshua son of Nun had not spoken because he was jealous or envious—because Joshua himself had not received this gift and was not numbered among the seventy, and because these two had remained apart and perhaps he now envied them. You may ask, can jealousy arise even over such great and holy gifts? Yes, indeed it can.

One might even say that this is the last sin of the Saints: becoming jealous of someone who has advanced further in the spiritual life. I am not the one saying this; the Fathers say that it is the last sin of the Saints. We may become jealous when we see someone progressing more than we are, and we may feel troubled by it, but we are not justified. What did I tell you? It is a sin. We must therefore be truly watchful not to envy the person who is advancing. We should simply say, “I too will labor to reach him and even go beyond him”—but not with evil zeal or wicked jealousy, that is, with envy.

“Are you jealous for my sake because they have prophesied, while you do not yet prophesy?” Do not be jealous, he says, either of me or of them because you yourself are not prophesying. Then he continues, “Wait for the appointed time.” I would like to comment briefly on these words, “Wait for the appointed time.” “And who can make all the Lord’s people prophets, unless the Lord gives His Spirit upon them?” Who else can give prophets to the people of the Lord, except the Lord when He gives His Spirit upon them? And Moses spoke prophetically when he said, “when the Lord gives.”

Moses said this prophetically: “When the Lord gives.” Saint Cyril explains that he spoke these words as a prophecy. The Lord has not yet given the Spirit to you, and therefore you do not yet possess Him. Let me explain what this means. What does “Wait for the appointed time” mean? It means: wait for the hour; wait for the proper season. Prophetically, Moses was telling Joshua, “You too will receive the Holy Spirit, but your time has not yet come. It will happen when God tells me that you are to become my successor.” For do not forget that the event we are now discussing...

Took place near the beginning, when the people had departed from Egypt—at the very beginning of the forty years. They had crossed over and entered the wilderness, and the need arose for government and judicial authority, so to speak. That was when this event occurred. Do not forget that the people remained in the wilderness for forty years, and that when Moses died there, he did not enter the Promised Land. Only a very short time passed between Joshua son of Nun assuming leadership as Moses’ successor and his leading the people into the Promised Land. All those years therefore had to pass first. Did Joshua son of Nun know how many years they would spend in the wilderness? No. Did Moses know? No. God had not yet revealed it; He would reveal it later.

God would later reveal the number as forty, showing that they would be greatly delayed in entering the Promised Land. Thus Moses spoke prophetically to Joshua son of Nun and said, “Wait for the appointed time.” In other words, you too will receive the Holy Spirit. And he received Him approximately forty years later, when he became the leader. Do you know how he received Him? We shall see it a little further on: through the laying on of hands. Pay attention—through the laying on of hands, which we have in the Mystery of Holy Orders and also in Holy Confession.

The laying on of hands is also used when a blessing is bestowed upon someone. God says this plainly in the Book of Numbers: “You priests shall place your hand upon the one whom you bless, and you shall say the words that I will give you.” This is the form of the blessing. “And I will bless them.” For what does the priest do? He uses his hand. Yet it is through his hand that God chooses to bestow grace. Where, then, are those—especially the Protestants—who object to this? Someone recently said this to me in a letter: “And why is the priest’s stole necessary?” and so on. This is why it is necessary. These things, my beloved, are not inventions of ours, nor inventions of the priests or the Fathers of the Church. All these things are...

Firmly established in the Word of God. We must understand this. So when Moses told Joshua, “Wait for the appointed time,” he truly had to wait. Saint Cyril now draws attention to this point. Why? Because the catechumens were becoming impatient: “When will we be baptized?” They understood that when they were baptized, they would receive the Holy Spirit. “When will we be baptized?” And what does Saint Cyril now say to the catechumens? “The Lord has not yet given Him; therefore you”—that is, every catechumen—“do not yet possess Him.” You do not yet possess the Holy Spirit.

Joshua son of Nun waited, and you too must wait. This is very important, exceedingly important. Let me give you a parallel example. Sometimes you may say to your spiritual father, “Why was I punished?” It is not a punishment. A canon has been imposed in the sense of spiritual discipline and correction. “When will I receive Holy Communion?” You must wait. “But when will I receive Holy Communion?” Learn to wait. You see, it is essential for a person to learn always to wait. That is the comment I wanted to make on this passage. Saint Cyril now turns to another subject: “Did Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph, then, not possess the Spirit?” Pay attention here; he wishes to show...

He wishes to demonstrate that the Spirit of God was active in the Old Testament, and that the righteous and the prophets of the Old Testament were not without the Holy Spirit. The difference is this: at that time, only the righteous and the prophets possessed the Spirit of God. After Pentecost, all receive the Spirit of God. That is the first difference. Saint Cyril explains this further on, though perhaps we shall not reach it tonight. The second difference is that in the Old Testament God sometimes gave the Spirit drop by drop—not always, certainly—but in the New Testament...

There is no longer any question of the Spirit being given in a limited measure, provided that you have what I spoke of earlier: a large vessel. Have a large vessel, and you will receive much of the Spirit of God. So Saint Cyril asks his question. But first, let me note one more thing. It is well known that the Son is also at work in the Old Testament. Yet this surprises some people, even theologians and university professors. Let them hear this, because I have heard something very strange said about it. Throughout the Old Testament the Son is continually present as God the Word (Logos). He is Yahweh, the Lord. Yahweh, the Lord, in the Old Testament is the Son. It is the Son who gives the Law upon...

Mount Sinai. It is the Son who speaks to Moses there in the burning bush. It is the Son who sends Moses into Egypt. It is the Son who brings His people out of Egypt. It is the Son who leads them through the Red Sea. It is the Son who protects them as a pillar of fire—forgive me, as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. It is the Son who, in the form of the pillar of cloud, moves whenever He wills the Hebrews to leave the place where they have camped. Listen: these pillars remained continually over the Tabernacle. So whenever the Son willed them to move on, to leave and camp elsewhere...

the pillar would move. Then the priests and Levites would take down the Tabernacle, lift it up, and the people would set out. Where would they go? Wherever the pillar came to rest. It was the Son. The Apostle Paul says so. Do you know how he puts it? He speaks of “the rock that followed them.” “And that rock,” he says in one of his epistles, “was Christ.” And does he not also say in Hebrews that Moses preferred the reproach of Christ? What can you say to that? It sounds as though we were saying that Kolokotronis fought at Marathon against the Persians with the three hundred. Yes, something like that. But no, no—Paul is not mistaken.

Moses preferred the reproach of Christ to the treasures of Egypt and to being called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. Why? Because Moses saw Christ; he truly saw Him. He preferred reproach and chose to suffer affliction with the people of God. And by sharing in their affliction, Moses already becomes a participant in and tastes the Cross of Christ. It is what Paul would later say about himself: that I suffer hardship, that I am...

He says it in Colossians: “I fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ, for the sake of His body,” and so forth. Moses takes this upon his own body for the sake of the body that the Word (Logos) would assume fifteen hundred years after Moses. Someone might say, “But then these things transcend time; they are universal.” Indeed they are. This is God the Word who became man—and whom we have reduced to cassette recordings and films. What horror! My dear friends, if anyone could truly know who Jesus Christ is, he would be seized with dread. And then consider how much of the Holy Spirit is possessed by those who stage such portrayals, and by those who go to watch them! One is seized with horror and vertigo—vertigo, vertigo.

Do you perceive it? Do you understand who the Son, Jesus Christ, is? Do you understand? Just as the Son is present, we might say, throughout the whole Old Testament, so too the Holy Spirit is present throughout the whole Old Testament. I remind you of what I told you last time about the two persons, appearing as a type of the Holy Trinity, who descended to Sodom to destroy the city and save Lot. Yes, the Holy Spirit is present throughout it all. Saint Cyril will give us...

a multitude of examples. He says, “What can I tell you? What can I tell you?” and then begins to list them one after another. The first example he gave was that of the seventy elders receiving the Holy Spirit, to demonstrate that the Spirit of God was also present in the Old Testament. Could the Spirit of God possibly have been absent from the Old Testament? Could that be? Saint Cyril now asks: “Did Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph not have the Spirit of God? Then did those who came before them not have Him?” Did those before Abraham—Noah, Enosh, and Enoch, whom he will mention shortly—not have the Spirit of God? “But the words, ‘when the Lord gives’...”

which Moses spoke here, signify “upon all.” This “upon all” is what I told you earlier: “Now grace is given in part, but then the gift will be abundant.” Now grace is partial, bestowed upon particular persons. Then—when? At Pentecost—grace will be abundant. Therefore, the righteous and the prophets were not without the Holy Spirit. “He hinted at what would come to pass among us at Pentecost.” He hinted at it. When Moses said, “when the Lord gives,” he was making an allusion. He hinted at what was to come. When would it come?

“Among us at Pentecost.” Among us, at Pentecost. “For He descended among us as well.” He came down upon us. We stand within the realm of Pentecost. “Yet He had descended upon many even before this.” He had come down earlier as well. “For it is written: ‘And Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom.’” This happened later, of course; Moses had told him, “Wait.” Yes, later Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the Spirit of God—the same Joshua to whom Moses had said, “Are you perhaps jealous?” How was he filled with the Spirit of God? “For Moses laid his hands upon him.” He placed his hands on him. The laying on of hands, ordination: this is what I explained to you earlier.

You see the same type everywhere, in the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the Old Testament they receive the Spirit of God through the laying on of hands. In the New Testament they receive the Spirit of God through the laying on of hands. You see everywhere—forgive me—that in the time of Moses the Spirit was given through the laying on of hands. How did Moses impart the Spirit? Through the laying on of hands. And Peter likewise gives the Spirit through the laying on of hands. Remember when Peter went to Samaria, as we studied in the Book of Acts. “Grace is also about to come upon you who are to be baptized.” Grace, the Holy Spirit, is going to come upon you as well.

Through the laying on of hands, through Baptism. “But I will not tell you how, for I will not anticipate the proper time.” I will not tell you how this will happen; it is not yet the time. Notice this point again: it is not yet the time. When will he explain it? After Baptism, when he delivers to these same people the catechetical lectures called Mystagogical Catecheses, which concern the knowledge and understanding of the Mysteries. And we continue: “The Spirit also came”—forgive me—“the Spirit also came upon all the righteous and the prophets: I mean Enosh, Enoch, Noah, and the others; Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. As for Joseph, even Pharaoh understood that ‘he has the Spirit of God within him.’” Thank you.

Even Pharaoh understood it. All these people possessed the Spirit of God; they were not without the Holy Spirit. When God said to Moses—forgive me, to Abraham—“Arise and depart. Leave your lands here.” Abraham was wealthy. “Take only your movable possessions; leave your land where it is. Leave your relatives as well.” He took only his father, who died along the way. “And you shall come to a place that I will show you.” God said these things. But tell me: how could Abraham have said yes if he had been without the Holy Spirit? He possessed the Spirit of God, who gave him the strength to say yes. What am I telling you through this? The Lord tells you to bear witness to Christ. I spoke about this last time. The Holy Spirit comes and speaks quietly within you. Do you remember that verb? To speak quietly within: to utter something secretly, from beneath, softly, so that no one else hears; and He tells you to bear witness to the Lord. You cannot bear witness unless you have the Spirit of God. Therefore, to keep the commandments and perform any holy deed, I must have the Spirit of God, who must inwardly assure me and strengthen me to do it. You may ask, “But does He not do this for everyone?”

He does it for everyone, but not everyone has spiritual ears with which to hear. That is why people disregard Him and do not keep God’s commandments; in this way they isolate the Spirit of God and do not allow Him to act within us. Through Holy Baptism we possess the Spirit of God, and He remains within us, but inactive. This, my dear friends, is our great calamity. Now I would like to say just a few words about Enosh—only a few words. He is the first person mentioned in the Old Testament as worshipping God and remaining faithful to Him, even though he belonged to a generation several generations after Adam. He worshipped the true God.

His case is indeed moving. There is only one brief phrase about Enosh in the Old Testament—Enosh, not Enoch. Then comes Enoch, who, it says, had been living as the people of his age lived, in a worldly manner. He received the Spirit of God, and then he came to metanoia, to repentance, and his life changed. Then he was taken up and was nowhere to be found. They could not find him anywhere; he had been taken up. Scripture says this clearly. Do you know who took him? The Holy Spirit. Where does He keep him? Wherever He Himself knows. Who took up the Prophet Elijah? The Holy Spirit. Where does He keep him? Wherever He Himself knows—as though into heaven.

As though into heaven, not into heaven: as though into heaven. Somewhere in heaven, or, if we translated it literally, as though into heaven. Why does it say “as though”? Because this is not the visible sky that we see. God knows where it is. This is why the Fathers speak this way in their brief interpretations. Saint John of Damascus discusses it in his Dogmatics, in the next-to-last chapter, if I may put it simply. The chapters are short. It has been published in that volume of the Thessaloniki series, EPE—is it not called EPE? EPE. There you will see that he will come...

in the days of the Second Coming of Christ, in the days of the Antichrist: Enoch and Elijah. For the Apocalypse says that there will be two prophets. Who will they be? Enoch and Elijah. Could Noah have remained righteous amid his corrupt generation if he had not possessed the Spirit of God? My dear friends, Noah possessed the Spirit of God. Indeed, his father Lamech prophesied the following when Noah was born: “This child will be the one who saves us.” Strange, is it not? At his birth: this child will be the one who saves us.

How? It is worth telling you. It truly is. We are straying a little from our subject, but that does not matter. I also want to give you some relief through these stories.

It is well known that the flood came and drowned everyone. Noah alone remained. Why was Noah preserved? So that the Messiah might come. Humanity began again from Noah, so that it might bring forth Abraham; Abraham’s line might bring forth Judah—through Isaac and Jacob, then Judah, his great-grandson; Judah’s line might bring forth David; and David’s line might bring forth Christ, bringing forth the Theotokos, and the Theotokos bearing Christ. Christ died upon the Cross. His soul, always united with His divinity, descended into Hades to meet Adam and all those who lived before Christ, including Noah and Noah’s father, because everyone went to Hades. Then He took them and brought them into Paradise; He transformed one part of Hades into Paradise. There, then, is the prophecy that this child would become the cause of our salvation. Yes, because the human race would be preserved and the Messiah would come into the world. It is wonderful.

“As for Joseph, even Pharaoh understood that ‘he has the Spirit of God within him.’ Concerning Moses and the wonders performed in his time through the divine uncreated energies of the Spirit, you have heard many times. The most courageous Job also possessed this Spirit.” Job possessed the Holy Spirit. Job could never have endured as he did if he had not possessed the Spirit of God. “And so did all the Saints, though we will not go through every name.” Even if, he says, I do not mention all their names. “This same Spirit, sent forth during the construction of the Tabernacle, filled Bezalel and the other skilled craftsmen with wisdom.” Let us say a few words about this while a little time remains. Who was this Bezalel? It is worth hearing, as I told you. As for what Pharaoh said about Joseph...

It is mentioned a little later, so let us not analyze it here, because what Pharaoh said was entirely correct—entirely correct. But Saint Cyril also speaks about Daniel: what Nebuchadnezzar said was correct, except that fifty percent was false and fifty percent was correct. When we reach that point, you will see. Do you know what this means? It means that a sorcerer can sometimes say certain things that are true, but he will also say things that are false. Remember Balaam. What did God say to Balaam? He was a sorcerer, a sorcerer from Mesopotamia. What did God say when He prevented him from going to curse the Hebrews?

Balak had summoned him. God said to him, “I will let you go. Since you insist on going, I will let you. But you will say nothing except what I put into your mouth.” And he was a sorcerer—he was a sorcerer. Tell me, what did the fortune-telling woman at Philippi say? Were the things she said true? They were. Yet there was also something false in them. This is why we say: be careful when the devil speaks, because he will also tell you something false. He may tell you ninety-nine good things and one false thing. And take care: you must never listen to him, even if he says those ninety-nine good things. Great caution is needed. Now, returning to Bezalel: he was a man, a Hebrew, like all those who were leaving Egypt. When God told Moses that he was to make an...

Ark, made of gold and incorruptible acacia wood, and then a tabernacle—a tent made from a particular kind of fabric—with pegs all around to secure it; when He told him to make skillfully wrought cherubim above the Ark of the Covenant, and many other things, including golden basins and golden cups, Moses said, “Lord, how am I to make all these things in the wilderness? How can I possibly make them?” And God said, “I will bestow My Holy Spirit upon Bezalel. He will receive illumination, and I will give him—listen, listen, listen—I will give him a spirit of architectural skill. He will make everything for you.”

So, when someone has a spirit of architectural skill—the ability to make something—he has the Spirit of God. My dear friends, some of these things are truly astonishing. But what can we do? Time is passing, and, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Έγινε σούσουρο. Οπότε αυτό δείχνει ότι αυτά που έλεγαν είχαν μία έξαρση, είχαν κάτι πολύ, πολύ φοβερό, πολύ δυνατό. Ο λαός τούς είδε αυτούς να προφητεύουν, να μιλούν έτσι, διότι ενεπλήσθησαν από το Πνεύμα του Θεού, και αμέσως πήγαν και το είπαν στον Μωυσή. Φαίνεται το είπε εις τον Ιησούν του Ναβή —ήταν τότε νέος— και εκείνος το λέει εις τον κύριό του, ο υπηρέτης του δηλαδή και διάδοχός του μετά, εις τον Μωυσή: «Το έμαθες, το άκουσες; Αυτοί δεν ήρθαν και είναι πλήρεις από Πνεύμα Άγιο. Εμπόδισέ τους». Και λέγει ο Μωυσής: «Ου δύναμαι κωλύειν αυτούς», φησίν, «επουράνιος γαρ εστίν η χάρις». Πώς θα τους εμποδίσω; Εγώ θα τους εμποδίσω;

Που είπε εδώ ο Κύριος, που είπε ο Μωυσής, δηλοί ότι σημαίνει το «επί πάντας». Αυτό το «επί πάντας», αυτό που σας είπα προηγουμένως: «Νυν μερική η χάρις, τότε δε έσται η δόσις πλουσία». Τώρα είναι μερική η χάρις, είναι σε κάποια πρόσωπα. Τότε —πότε; Στην Πεντηκοστή— θα είναι πλουσία η χάρις. Δεν ήσαν λοιπόν και οι δίκαιοι και οι προφήτες άμοιροι του Αγίου Πνεύματος. «Ηνίξατο δε το γενησόμενον εν τη Πεντηκοστή παρ’ ημίν». Ηνίξατο. Όταν είπε ο Μωυσής «όταν θα δώσει ο Κύριος», έκανε υπαινιγμόν. Ηνίξατο το γενησόμενον, εκείνο το οποίο θα γίνεται. Πότε;

τον Ιωσήφ ό,τι είπε, λίγο πιο κάτω αναφέρεται, οπότε ας μην το αναλύσουμε εδώ, γιατί λέγει αυτό που είπε ο Φαραώ ήταν πολύ σωστό, ήταν πολύ σωστό. Αλλά λέει και για τον Δανιήλ, αυτό που είπε ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ ήταν σωστό. Μόνο που το 50% ήταν σκάρτο και το 50% ήταν σωστό. Άμα θα φτάσουμε εκεί, θα το δείτε. Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει αυτό; Σημαίνει ότι πολλές φορές ένας μάγος μπορεί να πει μερικά πράγματα σωστά. Θα πει όμως και στραβά. Θυμηθείτε τον Βαλαάμ. Τι του λέει του Βαλαάμ; Μάγος ήταν, μάγος από τη Μεσοποταμία. Τι του λέγει ο Θεός, που τον εμποδίζει να πάει να καταραστεί τους Εβραίους;
