Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that no created being, including all the angelic hosts together, can equal the uncreated and infinite Holy Spirit. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are coeternal and equal, while the Son’s generation and the Spirit’s procession remain mysteries that cannot be explained through created analogies. Abraham’s encounter with the three visitors is presented as a profoundly Trinitarian image: three persons addressed as one Lord.

Beloved, we are still in the sixteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, which concerns the Holy Spirit, and we have now reached paragraph 23. We covered the first part of paragraph 23 and now continue: “Nothing created is equal in honor to Him. For all the orders and hosts of angels, even if gathered together, cannot equal the Holy Spirit.” He says that nothing which has been created—nothing among created beings—is equal in honor to the Holy Spirit. Even if all the orders and hosts of angels were gathered together and placed, so to speak, on one pan of a balance, they would not equal the Holy Spirit. This is very simple and easy to understand, because the Holy Spirit is God. Thus the uncreated God is the third Person of the Holy Trinity, while everything else is created. Can any creature, anything created, ever equal God or stand on the same level with Him? Can anything ever balance against Him? Therefore...
As Saint Cyril says, nothing in all creation is equal in honor to the Spirit of God. “The all-good power of the Paraclete encompasses them all.” All these beings, he says—and he is speaking of the angelic world, and all the more of human beings—are encompassed by the Spirit of God. In other words, the Paraclete, the all-good power of the Paraclete, encompasses and surpasses them all. God is infinite; everything else is finite. Angels are circumscribed—do not forget this. A circumscribed angel is one who is bounded, who has limits. That is what circumscribed means.
Even though an angel is a spirit, that makes no difference. The spirit of an angel is not infinite, just as the human spirit is not infinite. It is circumscribed; it has limits. Indeed, there is also an Orthodox teaching that angels possess bodies of a certain kind, which are of course denser than their spirits, yet certainly far subtler than the human body. This teaching also exists. However the matter may be, that is not the main point. The point is that angels are circumscribed, whereas the Holy Spirit is uncircumscribed, just as the Father is uncircumscribed and the Son is uncircumscribed. That is, God is infinite.
Is the universe infinite? We call it infinite only in a loose sense. For if the universe were infinite and God were infinite, then—as we used to say at school, “Things equal to the same third thing are equal to one another”—we would have to say: the universe is infinite, God is infinite, therefore God is equal to the universe. No, no. Beloved, the universe is finite. From the standpoint of our own capacities and judgment, we may call it infinite, but the universe is not infinite. Indeed, the very idea does not even fit within human reason.
Let me give you a modern example from astronomy. Astronomers tell us that the universe is expanding. An expanding universe means, they say, that the galaxies are moving farther apart from one another, and so on. It means that they are always moving outward. But what, if you please, does this “outward” mean? The word is an accommodation to our understanding. So there is always an outward movement, an expansion. But if the universe is expanding and growing larger, that means it was smaller yesterday than it is today or will be tomorrow. Therefore, it is not infinite. The word “infinite” is used loosely when applied to the universe. God is infinite, and God fills all things. If we cannot comprehend this even in relation to the universe, which we call infinite, how can we comprehend what God is? The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one essence.
Could the Holy Spirit, then, fail to encompass and surpass all things? Of course He encompasses and surpasses them all. Saint Cyril explains precisely what the angels are: “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve?” That is, they are spirits who minister. Ministry means service—literally, a public work—but, to put it in plain language, they are sent to perform a task. The angels are sent to carry out a work. “But He”—meaning the Holy Spirit—“searches even the depths of God,” as the
Apostle says. What does the Apostle Paul say? “For the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God,” says the Apostle Paul in the second chapter of his First Epistle to the Corinthians. Just as he says, the human spirit searches the depths of that person himself. In other words, my spirit knows who I am. You cannot know who I am, nor can I know who you are. And just as the human spirit searches the depths of that same human being, so the Holy Spirit searches the depths of God; that is,
the Holy Spirit knows who God is because He Himself is God. In other words, He knows Himself: the depths of the Father and also the depths of the Son. And as Christ Himself says, no one knows the Father except the Son. Therefore, no one knows God except the three Persons, who know themselves—that is, the Godhead. But if the Spirit of God searches the things of God, then of course He searches the depths of God. Notice the expression, “the depths of God.” Are there depths in God? Can the depths of God be understood? Then, all the more certainly, the Spirit of God is able to
search all things. He knows all things; the Spirit of God knows everything. Do you remember last time, when we spoke about how the Spirit of God knows? Saint Cyril says: consider us who are sitting here, all of us who are present. Add those in the city of Jerusalem, then those throughout the region of Palestine, and then those who are farther and farther beyond. The Spirit of God knows them all. And now we come to paragraph 24: “It was He who proclaimed Christ through the prophets; He who worked through the Apostles; and He who, to this day, seals souls in Baptism.”
Who did this? It was the Holy Spirit who inspired the prophets to write about Christ. This is abundantly attested in Holy Scripture. As the Apostle Peter says, “Men of God spoke by the Holy Spirit.” That is what it means for something to be divinely inspired: what is written is inspired by the Spirit of God. And everything written in the New Testament through Christ’s servants was written by the Spirit of God through them. And what shall we say even of the Fathers of our Church?
The Holy Spirit illumines them so that they may correctly interpret the prophecies that were themselves written by the Holy Spirit. What does the Apostle Peter say? No prophecy is resolved—that is, interpreted—except where the Holy Spirit is present. Therefore, no prophecy is written without the Spirit of God, and no prophecy is interpreted without the Spirit of God. Thus, the person who explains a prophecy correctly stands, we might say, in the same position as the one who wrote it.
Both the one who wrote and the one who interprets have the Holy Spirit behind them as their Teacher. For this reason, beloved, the Fathers of our Church are an immeasurably great treasure. This is why the Church—as you saw yesterday, Sunday—again commemorated the Fathers of a Council. It is called the Seventh, though other Councils are also mentioned. The Fathers of the Councils are commemorated very often. Why do you think this is? For the very reason we are discussing now: without the Fathers, we could not have a correct interpretation. As men inspired by God, they interpreted the prophecies under divine inspiration. Their worth—and this is no exaggeration—is equal to that of the prophets who wrote, and
whose writings came into being under the Holy Spirit. There is the well-known account concerning Saint Basil the Great. Once, while he was writing at his desk, a dove was seen resting upon his shoulder. The dove, it is said, placed its beak into Saint Basil’s ear. This is a very expressive image, showing that the Fathers wrote under the guidance of the Spirit of God. This is extremely important—extremely important, I ask you to understand. Therefore, when we take up either Holy Scripture or the interpretations of the Fathers, we must do so with great reverence. We must not handle Holy Scripture as we would any ordinary book.
And should we handle a Patristic book as we would any other book? The Spirit of God is set down there in writing. The Holy Spirit, then, wrote all the Christological prophecies. But the same Holy Spirit also worked through the Apostles—just as He worked through the prophets of the Old Testament, so He worked through the Apostles. And now this same Holy Spirit comes to seal people when they are baptized. Thus we see one work unfolding in stages: the prophets, the Apostles, and the faithful. The Holy Spirit is in the first,
in the second, and in the third—the very same Holy Spirit. What a great honor it is that, when I am baptized, the Spirit of God seals me. Yes, the Spirit of God seals me. This is why someone who has remained in heresy for many years—pay attention—if he returns, when he returns, he does not need to be baptized again, but he must be sealed with Holy Chrism. The seal must be restored through a material sign, which is Holy Chrism; but behind the Holy Chrism is the Spirit of God.
More precisely, He rests upon the Holy Chrism. Yes, we have a material sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit. And this is very important. But this cannot be done a third time, because such a person would never reach the point of doing it a third time. That is, if he departed again, he certainly would not return again. That person would be lost. It would be over. Even the second time, the Church does this very sparingly—that is, with great deliberation—because this image—forgive me, this seal—has been violated and must be renewed. “The Father gives to the Son, and the Son imparts through the Holy Spirit.” The Father gives and entrusts to the Son,
the Son gives and entrusts to the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit comes and gives to human beings. This does not mean that the Holy Spirit is inferior to the Son, or that the Son is inferior to the Father. We should also say that the Son is said to be begotten, yet the Son is without beginning together with the Father. There is no age of the Father—if the word “age” may be used—that is greater than the age of the Son. This is the error made by the Millennialists. They say, “How can He be the Son of God and also God, since He is called Son? Is not the Son inferior to the Father?”
The Fathers—John Chrysostom and others—say: “What entered your mind when Scripture said that He is the Son? Did you imagine that the Father carries Him in the womb and gives birth to Him as human beings do?” Beloved, what the word “Son” means here is unknown to us. Pay attention: it is unknown to us. We use and repeat the word recorded in Holy Scripture, that the Son is the Son. What does this mean? We know nothing more. If we were speaking in terms of age, the age of the Son is equal to the age of the Father. How, then, could the Son be younger than the Father in the human sense? Such things do not apply to the Godhead. Therefore, we cannot know what it means for Him to be the Son,
or what it means for the Holy Spirit to proceed. Nevertheless, we confess the Orthodox faith when we say: the Son is begotten, and the Holy Spirit proceeds. Nothing more; we know nothing more. And as Saint Cyril says so beautifully—I think he says it a little farther on, unless we mentioned it last time—ah, yes, he says it below: we will say only what has been written. We can say nothing more. But we can say what I have already told you and what the Fathers teach: we cannot apply to God things that apply to human beings. There is no mechanical, chemical, thermal, or biological analogy—or any other kind of analogy we might choose—by which we could understand the Mystery of the Holy Trinity. There is none. There is none. If we sometimes use an analogy, we use it only to help us grasp something, but it is never exact. It is only an image; it does not describe the reality precisely. Thus, the Father gives to the Son, and the Son gives to the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril explains: “For it is Jesus Himself who says this, not I.” Christ Himself says it, not I, Cyril.
“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father.” Everything, He says, has been delivered to Me by My Father. And He also speaks concerning the Holy Spirit. What does He say about the Holy Spirit? “When He comes, the Spirit of truth,” and so forth, “He will glorify Me, for He will receive of what is Mine and declare it to you.” He receives from Me and will declare it to you. The Father delivers all things to the Son, and the Son to the Holy Spirit. Do you understand this? We do not understand it. This is what Holy Scripture tells you; beyond that, we understand nothing. We understand only one thing: although the Persons are absolutely equal, with none before or after another, and are absolutely equal in honor,
They are one essence. And we express this in the sign of the Cross by joining these three fingers and holding them level. We should never make the sign of the Cross with them like this, but like this, to show that the three persons of the Holy Trinity are equal in honor and that none is inferior to another. Yet from this I draw a lesson about hierarchy. What I am saying does not apply to the Holy Trinity as such, but it does offer us a lesson in hierarchy. Now, what am I to say here? Should I say it or not? Some people will certainly misunderstand me.
They will misunderstand me. There is no democracy in the Holy Trinity. Although there is equality, there is no democracy. Likewise, there can be no democracy in what God reveals to mankind. A human being cannot say, “Come here, God; sit down at the same table and let us discuss it.” Man must accept what God gives him. There is no debate. Among human beings we can speak of democracy, and we can indeed say that the government of the Church is democratic. But this democratic order of the Church is not like the democratic systems that exist outside the Church. For example, when...
the Apostle Peter, as you remember from Acts, appears for a moment to be the head, like a leader, he is not the leader. He is not the leader. The Twelve are the leaders; we have a collective body, the body of the twelve Apostles. What, then, of the Romans, the Latins, who maintain that the Apostle Peter was the leader? No, not at all. As we said when studying Acts, the Apostle Peter was sent together with John by the body of the Apostles to Samaria, to see what Philip was doing there. But if he were the head, why was he sent? Scripture says that he was commissioned. Why was he sent? Peter is not the head. At a certain moment he takes the floor, but he is not the head. The Twelve, then, decide...
that someone should be chosen as the twelfth, in Judas’s place. The believers were also present, one hundred and twenty people, and an election was held. In the end, two were chosen as candidates, and they cast lots to see upon whom the lot would fall. And how were the Seven Deacons appointed? Were they simply named? No, they were elected. By whom? By the multitude, by the people. So we have, as we might say, a kind of democracy. At one point the Apostle Peter says to the multitude, “It is not right for us to leave the preaching of the word in order to attend to the Church’s material affairs”—that is, “to serve tables.”
That would not be right. It would be good for you yourselves to choose certain deacons, bring them before us, and then we will appoint them to their ministry. This proposal seemed good. The Apostle Peter proposes it, and it seems good to the people. And when the first so-called Apostolic Council met in Jerusalem and issued certain decisions, what did it say? Listen to the formula, to the wording it used: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us,” and so forth. There it is: it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us. Do you see? You may say, “An ideal democracy.” Yes, but pay attention. This democracy, which should exist within the Church...
must always remain under the judgment of the one and only God, the Holy Trinity, who gives us an image of hierarchy to imitate. That is, the Son receives from the Father and gives to the Holy Spirit. Therefore, within the democracy of the Church there must be reverence and hierarchy.
Reverence and hierarchy. If reverence and hierarchy are absent, we accomplish nothing. As for how far these things still exist, or how badly they have been trampled and distorted, what can I tell you? Do I know what to say? What can I say? In any case, the point is this, so that you may know it...
You know the saying. “What is Christianity?” asks Saint Gregory the Theologian. “Christianity is the imitation of the Holy Trinity.” That, he says, is Christianity: the imitation of the Holy Trinity. Let me give you a small example, so that you can see how degraded things have become.
A father—a father according to the flesh—may certainly ask his children for their opinion about something. Yet the father does not cease to be the father and to have the final word. By “the final word,” I mean that his word will ultimately bring every objection to an end. I mean this in the proper sense. God tells us something, and that settles it. We may make a proposal to our Father. Take Israel as an example. They asked for a kingdom, even though they had a theocracy. God says, “Why, am I not pleasing to you?” Oh, my! Do you hear that? “Am I not pleasing to you? Very well, since you want a kingdom, I will give you one. But know this: things will not go well for you.”
And indeed, things went very badly; they became terribly corrupt. God accepts their request and, if I may put it this way, enters into conversation with them. Let me say it that way. But should the people not instead have said, “Lord, You know what must be done. Why should we ask You for something that seems, for a moment, to set aside Your own place and authority? Why?” And yet, my dear ones, God may often take into account what we ask of Him.
There can, however, be a certain overstepping of bounds, just as there cannot... Thank you.
There must be a boundary that cannot be crossed. We cannot speak of democracy within the home in such a way that the father is neutralized and no longer has any authority. It is well known that in our time the father’s authority has died. A father cannot say, “Children, what would you like us to eat for lunch tomorrow?” and then, if he has five children, receive five different opinions. So what happens now? Are we to be like Hodja’s oven, turning first this way and then that? At times, of course, he may say, “Children, would you like...?” I do not know; that is something he may reasonably ask, and they may answer, “Yes.” But pay attention: he cannot ask the children in such a way that the children end up governing the household. He may ask their opinion about something, but the children cannot govern. Did you hear that?
This is democracy wrongly understood, and it leads to destruction and disintegration, just as families today are indeed being led to destruction. Saint Cyril adds: “The Father, through the Son and together with the Holy Spirit, grants all things. The gifts of the Father are not one set of gifts, those of the Son another, and those of the Holy Spirit yet another; for there is one salvation, one power, one faith; one God, the Father; one Lord, His Only-Begotten Son; and one Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.” He makes some very beautiful points here. This is what I was telling you earlier: the Father gives through the Son. Before, he said that the Father gives to the Son; now he expresses it in a more concise phrase: “The Father, through the Son, together with the Holy Spirit.” The Father works through the Son, together with the Holy Spirit. There is also the expression “in the Holy Spirit.” Allow me to show you how this works. When God creates the world, the formula describing creation is as follows. How are we to express it? Indeed, this formula is also found among the early theologians of our Church, such as Saint Theophilus of Antioch. It is set forth beautifully in his First and Second Epistles to Autolycus. He says:
The Father creates through the Son—that is, by the Son—in the Holy Spirit. The Father wills, the Son creates, and the Holy Spirit sustains. The same applies to man’s re-creation, that is, to salvation: the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit. See this now in vivid form. The Father wills that man should be saved, and He sends the Son into the world. Who accomplished our salvation in the world? The Son. And when the Son had accomplished salvation and departed, what did He leave in the Church so that salvation might continue to be carried out? The Holy Spirit. These expressions, then, have been used from ancient times.
The Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit; or, as Saint Cyril says here, the Father through the Son together with the Holy Spirit. But this phrase “together with the Holy Spirit” enables me to say something more, because “together with” differs somewhat from “in.” “In” means within. Thus, “the Son in the Holy Spirit” means that, in a certain manner, the Spirit of God abides and carries out all that He accomplishes. But when he says “together with,” it means the Son together with the Holy Spirit. So listen carefully. This distinction is very beautiful, and I hope you will appreciate it, even though I have explained it to you before. For here we are not giving a lecture; we are holding a lesson...
Indeed, we even use books. Are you holding books, notebooks, pencils? Do you have anything with you? Nothing? Some of you are taking notes. Not everyone has a book, pencil, and paper. Well, next Monday you will all bring a notebook and pencil, and you will also obtain the book so that you can follow the ancient text. Otherwise I might fool you one day and skip something I do not understand, moving on to what comes next. Then you should tell me, “You skipped something.” So please, that is how it will be, and I shall even conduct an inspection next Monday. Take care! Do you remember the account of Abraham, when three men, as a type of the Holy Trinity...
visited Abraham and received his hospitality? If we observe the passage carefully and attentively, we see that whenever Abraham speaks, he always uses the singular. He never says, “Lords.” Search the text and see for yourselves. Nowhere does he say “Lords,” but always “Lord.” Someone might say, of course, that he is addressing one of them and treating the others as inferior. No. This passage is profoundly Trinitarian and possesses features of great doctrinal depth. Pay attention, then. After they had eaten, they rose to depart.
Abraham went with them to see them on their way, as courtesy requires. But then a conversation takes place among the three persons, and they say: “Should We hide from Our servant Abraham what We intend and have in mind?” Abraham? No. Therefore, We should tell Abraham what We are considering. “Abraham, word has reached heaven that these cities”—note that Abraham was in a place higher than Sodom and Gomorrah—“are terribly sinful. And because the reports that have reached heaven are incredible...” This is strongly anthropomorphic language: as though some report, word, or news must ascend to heaven. Is God up there and unable to see what is happening below on earth? “I will go down and see what is happening there.” This beautiful but anthropomorphic expression reveals God’s astonishment at the corruption of human nature—and you know what that corruption was: homosexuality. I will move on. Today we are not astonished. God was astonished, but today we are not. We have grown accustomed to everything. Now pay attention. Only two of the men departed. They are called angels. They had no wings. We call someone an angel, but that does not imply wings.
An angel means a messenger!
The two men went down toward Sodom, where Lot was, with a twofold purpose, of course: to save Lot and to destroy Sodom. There were five cities; in the end, four of the five were destroyed. One remained with Abraham. The dialogue that followed with Abraham is well known. “Lord,” he says, “if there are fifty righteous people there, will You destroy these cities?” And the Lord said no, and so forth. Pay attention. One remains with Abraham, while the other two descend. I say “descend” because it is a known geographical fact that the surface of the Dead Sea lies some seven hundred meters below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea. The cities—Sodom, Gomorrah, and the others—were built beside the lake, to its south. Abraham, meanwhile, was somewhere near what we would today call Jerusalem. That mountainous ridge is high, about seven hundred meters above the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, if I am not mistaken. Consequently, the difference in elevation between Abraham and Sodom was approximately fourteen hundred meters. Now pay attention.
Naturally, the two men had to descend. And indeed, all this took place at midday. By evening they found Lot sitting there at the gate of the city, for he was a devout man. He certainly resembled his uncle in hospitality—not, of course, to the same degree as his uncle—but he nevertheless had many good qualities. So he waited there for strangers, in order to receive them into his home. When he saw these two, he said to them, “Let me receive you into my home.” You know from the story what happened afterward. Here, one remained above while the other two went down. That high place, together with the one who remained there, is a type of the Father.
The two who descended to the lower place—and this is why I described the differences in elevation, so that you could picture it—went down to Sodom and Gomorrah, which are a type of the world. They are a type of the world into which two Persons of the Holy Trinity descend. One is the Son, and the other is the Holy Spirit. For these two descended into the world to save the world, but according to the counsel and will of the One who remained above. Now you can see it vividly. The Son came into the world, and the Holy Spirit came into the world and remains in the Church, saving the Church and saving the world by gathering it into the Church. This, then, is a very, very beautiful type
of the Holy Trinity and of the work of the Holy Trinity—a work of salvation, but also of punishment at the same time. Let us not forget that. So the work of Christ when He came here to earth has two aspects: the Christological aspect and the pneumatological aspect. The Christological aspect forms the Church into one body, because Christ assumed a human body. The other aspect, the pneumatological one, is Pentecost. Do you hear how this is shown? From the side of Christ there flowed
blood and water. The Evangelist John gives particular attention to this, and that is why he bears witness to it. These are Baptism and the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, which constitute the Church. For through Baptism I enter the Church. To “enter” means that I become one body with Christ. And I am nourished by the blood. Thank you. Thus, what flowed from the side of Christ constitutes the Church, which is the body of Christ. And the body of Christ incorporates the faithful of every century and every age. But if we have one body, then where are the individual human persons?
We might still say that we have merely a mass, because in the body of Christ, the Church, the human person would be lost. And it is well known that when the human person is lost, we have nothing. We have nothing. The loss of the human person is a dreadful thing. In Buddhism, the human person is lost. For the soul of the believer—that is, of the Buddhist, since I mentioned something earlier during the question period, let me explain this point—when it departs from the human body, which is regarded as worthless and as a prison, just as Platonism also taught, then the soul is united
with the universal soul, which is also called the Divinity. But there is no self-awareness there. It is an unconscious state of blessedness. It is Nirvana—Nirvana: unconscious blessedness. Now, whether unconscious blessedness can exist, you yourselves can understand that this is wholly self-contradictory. How can I experience blessedness if I have no self-awareness? Whether it rains or snows, what does the dead person in the grave understand? Nothing, because he possesses no self-awareness. This is the Buddhist Paradise. And what do we have here? The loss of the person. For each individual soul is united
with the universal soul and henceforth becomes part of a single mass. This is more or less how things would be if the Church had only the Christological aspect. But that is not so. The Creator of persons, the Triune God, is also the Preserver of human persons. And when we say “person,” we do not mean a face; we mean self-awareness. This is what personhood is: the preservation of the self, the knowledge that I am myself. I am Father Athanasios; I am not any one of you. I am who I am. I am not you; I am myself. And you are who you are. You are not who I am. Each person is conscious of himself. This is what “person” means: self-awareness. So,
Pentecost is the other aspect of the Church. Which aspect? The pneumatological one. The first is called Christological. The Holy Spirit descends upon the heads of those present. And please note: they were not only the Twelve; they were one hundred and twenty. To express this, our iconography depicts twelve Apostles, because how could it depict one hundred and twenty persons? But whom does it place among the Twelve? It includes Paul, who came much later than Pentecost. It includes Mark and Luke as well. They were not among the twelve disciples. What, then, does the iconography seek to express here? The whole Church.
The Church of every century and every age, which includes me and you, our children, those farther away, those who came before, and those who will come afterward—the whole Church. So, was the Holy Spirit divided? The Holy Spirit was not divided. The divine uncreated energies were divided—or rather, forgive me, the divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit was distributed. He comes as fire, and each tongue of fire—it is called a tongue because when fire rises upward it forms shapes like tongues; that is what “tongues of fire” means—rested upon the head of each person. A tongue of fire rested upon each one. Do you know what this means? The Holy Spirit first appeared as fire, and then it was divided—not the Holy Spirit Himself, but the divine uncreated energies of the Holy Spirit. I say it again for the second time.
What does this show? It shows not a mass, but persons. Thus, in Christ we have the body and union, while in the Holy Spirit we have the manifestation of the persons. Do you hear this, please? Some people fear that they will lose their personhood within Christianity. In the mass created by certain collectivist or sociological systems—call them what you will—there, my brother, you lose your personhood. Do you understand what I mean? Do you know what kinds of collectivist systems exist? There you lose your personhood and become a number. But you do not lose your personhood within the Church. You will retain it for all eternity, in the Kingdom of God. Do you hear?
Thus the Church has two aspects, like a coin with two sides: the Christological and the pneumatological. There is the Son, who descended into the world, and the Holy Spirit, who remains in the world so that the world may be saved. They are the two of the three who descended to Sodom to save Lot. Do you see this? This, then, is what I explained to you and what we read: “The Father, through the Son, together with the Holy Spirit, grants all things.” He grants all things. What does He grant? The gifts of the Father are not different from those of the Son, nor are the gifts of the Holy Spirit different from theirs.
If the Holy Spirit gives me a particular gift, He does not give it to me independently of the Son or independently of the Father. “For there is one salvation,” one salvation; “one power, one faith; one God, the Father; one Lord, His Only-Begotten Son; one Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.” Indeed, we might say that the Holy Trinity is also the type of the Church, as I told you earlier. Did I not tell you that “Christianity is an imitation of the Holy Trinity”? So then, what is the Holy Trinity? One essence.
The persons remain distinct: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. One essence, three Persons. Do we not all receive Holy Communion within the Church? If we all receive Holy Communion, what are we? One body, the body of Christ. What I received, you also received. It is not Christ who is united to me; I am united to Christ, and you are united to Christ, and so is the third person and the ten-thousandth person. Where, then, are all of us who are united found? In the body of Christ. At the same time, each person receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit, one person receiving this gift and another that gift, while each person remains distinct—exactly as in the Holy Trinity. The essence is one. The Father begets but is not begotten; the Son is begotten but does not beget. The Holy Spirit proceeds. Each Person has
His own personal properties, because they are Persons—the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. “It is enough for us to know these things; but let us not pry into the nature or hypostasis.” What we have said, Saint Cyril tells us, is sufficient for us to know what we need to know at this point. We must not pry into the nature or the hypostasis. Here, when he says “nature or hypostasis,” he means the same thing, because at the time of the First Ecumenical Council the word hypostasis had two meanings. It could mean nature, and it could also mean person.
Later, the term hypostasis came to be established as meaning person. But at that time it was also used to mean nature. This caused confusion, particularly with the West. There was confusion surrounding the terms nature, essence, and hypostasis. It was purely a matter of language and concepts—purely, we might say, a grammatical and conceptual matter. How shall I put it? But here I suspect that when he says “nature or hypostasis,” he means the same thing. In other words, whether you call it nature or hypostasis, the meaning is the same. As I told you, however, in later usage hypostasis means person. “Let us not pry.” That is, we have nothing to say about the nature of God. We must not pry into it.
“Let us say what has been written. What has not been written, let us not dare to say.” If it had been written, we would say it. Therefore, we must not dare to speak of what has not been written. Saint Cyril is very careful—and rightly so—not to say anything that has not been written. This is entirely correct, because he fears that he might say something that could lead him—as he said much earlier, when we began the catechesis on the Holy Spirit—to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit by saying something erroneous. “It is sufficient for our salvation to know” that there is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. That is all. This is sufficient for our salvation.
There is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—nothing else. For if you say, “I do not accept the Son,” or, “I do not accept the Holy Spirit,” then you will not be saved. The Evangelist John clearly says that whoever does not have the Son does not have the Father either. And in order to have the Son, you must have the Holy Spirit. For no one can call the Son God—that is, Lord—“except in the Holy Spirit,” as the Apostle Paul says. No one can call the Son Lord, meaning acknowledge Him as God, unless he has the Spirit of God. Therefore, this is sufficient for our salvation. This faith is the Alpha and the Omega of our salvation. Now, if this faith, which is the Alpha and the Omega of our salvation,
is filled out by the human response, then we ask: What is pleasing to God? What does God want from me? What does the Apostle Paul say in the Epistle to the Romans? He says that we must discern—“that you may discern”—the will of God, what is pleasing and perfect. Therefore, in order to be saved, I as a believer must have this knowledge of God, and I must also respond to what God desires. And what God desires is nothing other than what is pleasing to Him—what is pleasing and perfect. In this way, I truly bring my salvation to completion. Therefore, it is not enough to have mere faith, that is, a bare faith, and simply to say,
“I accept the dogma of the Holy Trinity.” That is not enough; I must also have works. This is precisely what the Protestants were unable to understand. But how could they understand it, since they do not have the Spirit of God? How could they understand it? From the time of Luther, they have even questioned how Saint James—that is, the Epistle of Saint James—came to be included in the New Testament. Do you know why? Because Saint James says: You say that you believe? Your works will show it. He speaks about works, whereas the Protestants say that you will be saved only if you believe. They do not consider the matter of works, but only the matter of faith, and they base this on Paul. Paul, however,
does not exclude works. On the contrary, Paul and James complement one another. And, if you like, what is a stinging rebuke to them is that Paul and James, the Brother of the Lord, use the same example, each emphasizing a different aspect of it. The Apostle Paul asks: How was Abraham saved? He believed, and it was accounted to him as righteousness. In other words, Abraham believed and was saved, and his faith was reckoned to him as virtue, as righteousness. Our Saint James takes the same example and says that Abraham was saved because he not only believed but also had works. And, as is well known, Abraham’s works were many.
One such work was his leaving his homeland, Mesopotamia, to go and dwell where God had told him. That was a work. And there were many other works flowing from faith. But Abraham’s supreme work was the sacrifice of his son Isaac. Thus Paul uses the same example to emphasize faith, while James uses it to emphasize works. The conclusion is this: neither faith without works, as Saint James says, nor works without faith. Therefore, we must believe in who our Triune God is, and we must conform our lives to His law and His commandments, so that we may be pleasing to Him. May the Lord bless you. Thank you.

Ποιο; Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο είναι εκείνο το οποίον ενέπνευσε τους προφήτες να γράψουν για τον Χριστό. Αυτό είναι πολυμαρτυρημένο μέσα στην Αγία Γραφή, όπως ο Απόστολος Πέτρος λέγει, ότι «εν Πνεύματι Αγίω ελάλησαν άνθρωποι του Θεού». Δηλαδή, θεόπνευστα. Αυτό θα πει θεόπνευστο: αυτό που γράφεται το εμπνέει το Πνεύμα του Θεού. Και ό,τι γράφτηκε στην Καινή Διαθήκη διά των Χριστών, το Πνεύμα του Θεού είναι εκείνο το οποίον έγραψε διά των Χριστών. Θέλετε ακόμη και τους Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας;
ο Υιός δίδει και παραδίδει εις το Άγιον Πνεύμα και το Πνεύμα το Άγιον έρχεται και δίδει εις τους ανθρώπους. Δεν σημαίνει με αυτό ότι το Πνεύμα το Άγιον είναι κατώτερον του Υιού και ο Υιός είναι κατώτερος του Πατρός. Διότι, να το πούμε και αυτό, ότι ο Υιός γεννάται, λέγεται, αλλά ο Υιός είναι συνάναρχος με τον Πατέρα. Δεν υπάρχει ηλικία του Πατρός, αν επιτρέπεται η λέξη «ηλικία», που να είναι μεγαλυτέρα από την ηλικία του Υιού. Είναι το λάθος που κάνουν οι Χιλιαστές. Λέγουν: πώς είναι δυνατόν να είναι Υιός του Θεού και Θεός, τη στιγμή που λέγεται Υιός; Δεν είναι ο Υιός κατώτερος από τον Πατέρα;
να έχει μια ανυπέρβαση και να μιλάμε για μια δημοκρατία μέσα στο σπίτι και να εξουδετερώνουμε τον πατέρα, και μετά ο πατέρας να μην έχει πλέον κανένα κύρος. Η αυθεντία του πατρός είναι γνωστό ότι στην εποχή μας έχει πεθάνει. Δεν μπορεί ο πατέρας να λέγει: «Παιδιά, τι φαΐ θέλετε αύριο το μεσημέρι να φάμε;» και, αν έχει πέντε παιδιά, έχει πέντε γνώμες. Ε, και τι θα γίνει τώρα εδώ; Ο φούρνος του Χότζα; Θα γυρίσουμε από εδώ και θα γυρίσουμε από εκεί; Κάποτε όμως μπορεί να πει: «Παιδιά, θα θέλατε...;» Να, ξέρω, αυτό φαίνεται να το ρωτήσει. Να πουν εκείνα «ναι». Αλλά προσέξτε όμως: δεν μπορεί να ερωτάει τα παιδιά και να κυβερνούν τα παιδιά. Κάτι θα ρωτήσει. Δεν μπορούν να κυβερνούν τα παιδιά. Το ακούσατε αυτό;
Αίμα και νερό. Και ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης δίνει ιδιαίτερη προσοχή σε αυτό. Γι' αυτό δίνει τη μαρτυρία. Και είναι το βάπτισμα και το μυστήριον της Θείας Ευχαριστίας, τα οποία συνιστούν την Εκκλησία. Διότι με το βάπτισμα μπαίνω στην Εκκλησία. Θα πει «μπαίνω», θα πει γίνομαι ένα σώμα με τον Χριστό. Και με το αίμα τρέφομαι. Ευχαριστούμε. Έτσι λοιπόν, ό,τι ξεπήδησε από την πλευρά του Χριστού συνιστά την Εκκλησία, που είναι το σώμα του Χριστού. Και το σώμα του Χριστού ενσωματώνει τους πιστούς όλων των αιώνων και όλων των εποχών. Όταν όμως έχουμε σώμα, τότε πού είναι τα ανθρώπινα πρόσωπα;
