Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem calls the Holy Spirit the Paraclete because He consoles believers, understands their weakness, and strengthens them to resist sin rather than excuse it. The lecture relates the Spirit’s ineffable intercession to Trinitarian worship, in which the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit act together in the Church and Divine Liturgy. When Christians are brought before authorities, the Holy Spirit gives them the words and courage to confess Christ, as seen in the steadfast witness of the New Martyrs.

Beloved, we are now at paragraph 20 of the sixteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. The subject of this lecture is the Holy Spirit. He continues: “He is called the Paraclete because He consoles and comforts us and helps us in our weakness.” Why is He given the name Paraclete? Because He comes to console us. In Greek, the word translated here as “to console” means “to comfort.”
The same word can also mean what we mean today when we say, “I beg someone.” In that sense it means, “I implore, I ask”; I implore someone, I beg him, as we say today. But in ancient Greek it means “to comfort.” This is why we speak of a paraklesis, and of the Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos. Here, “paraklesis” has two meanings: we implore the Theotokos, and through this supplication we also receive consolation and are comforted. Thus the Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete because He comforts us; “comfort” means consolation.
“He helps us in our weakness.” He becomes our helper: He feels what we feel and understands us in our weaknesses. This does not mean illness, as when someone says, “I have a disease,” but our human frailty. A person, living under certain circumstances, falls and sins. Why is he weak? Because the human will was weakened after the Fall of our first parents. In many people, it has been weakened to an extreme degree. And so the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, comes to understand us. We often say, “You do not understand me.” The One who truly understands us is the Holy Spirit. But take care here.
When we human beings say, “You do not understand me,” especially in our own day, we unfortunately misuse the expression. Today, when someone says, “You do not understand me,” what he often wants is to be left alone to continue in sin. The Holy Spirit would never do that, because then He would be granting us an amnesty to go on sinning continually, as though saying, “It does not matter.” How could the Spirit of God ever say such a thing? He understands that we have been weakened, and He comes to strengthen us so that we will not sin. But today we understand it in that other sense.
“Understand me so that I may go on sinning.” Do you see what this means? What a terrible thing! Let us not confuse matters. The One who comforts and helps us in our weakness is therefore called the Paraclete. The name Paraclete was given by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. This is why He says, “When the Paraclete comes, the Spirit of Truth,” and so forth. Elsewhere in the Gospel according to John, the Lord says, “When the other Paraclete comes.” When He says “the other Paraclete,” this implies that there is already another.
Who, then, is the one, and who is the other? If the other is the Holy Spirit, the second Paraclete—not second in rank or quality—then who is the first Paraclete, again not in rank or quality? It is the Son. For Jesus Christ is also called Paraclete. I do not know whether you knew that. Christ, therefore, is also called Paraclete because He comforts us.
Forgive me: because He comforts us and helps us in our weakness. But the Holy Spirit is also Paraclete, the second Paraclete. “For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought.” We do not know what to pray for in the right way. Truly, do we know how to pray? We do not. When the disciples said to the Lord, “Lord, teach us to pray,” the Lord gave them the Our Father. Their request, “Teach us how to pray,” has, we might say, two aspects: one concerns the outward manner, and the other the substance. The outward manner concerns how I am to pray. Should I stand, sit, kneel, or prostrate myself? How should I pray? The other, the essential aspect, concerns the content of my prayer. As for the first aspect,
the outward manner, the Lord allowed His disciples to see in Him how a person ought to pray. In the Garden of Gethsemane, the Lord prayed prostrate on the ground; He also prayed kneeling and standing. In other words, He used all these outward forms, all these bodily postures of prayer. As for its content, He taught us the Our Father. The Our Father is itself a complete prayer, wonderfully complete and exceedingly rich. Yet do not forget that the Our Father is also a model for prayer, a pattern and an outline. It contains the elements that should be present in every prayer handed down to us by the Church and in every prayer we faithful offer. Do you understand? This is very important. And so, we do not know how to pray. I have just remembered that wonderful story about Socrates and Euthydemus, the Euthydemus who appears in Plato’s dialogues. He was going to pray at a temple and, following the custom of that time—the age before Christ, the age of Socrates—he was carrying a wreath
and was on his way to pray to a god in a pagan temple. On the road he met Socrates. “Euthydemus, where are you going?” “I am going to the temple to pray,” he replied. “And what will you ask of God?” “What else,” he said, “but wealth and glory, and perhaps one day the rule of the city of Athens?” You see, this ambition has existed among us from ancient times, and in humanity generally; I say “among us” because we are speaking of Greeks. Then Socrates, in his wonderful way, said to him, “Tell me: if wealth might lead you into a dissolute life, should the gods—or God—give you that wealth?” “Certainly not,”
Euthydemus replied. “And if you asked for glory or to govern the city of Athens, but then failed in governing its affairs, would that benefit you, if you had to bear the curse and the stigma of the citizens of Athens?” “Certainly not,” Euthydemus said. “Then what should you ask of God?” “I do not know. After what you have just told me, I no longer know what to ask,” said Euthydemus. “Can you tell me what I should ask?” Socrates answered, “I will tell you: I too do not know what you should ask. But wait. The One will come
who will teach us—listen to this—how we ought to pray.” Astonishing, truly astonishing! “The One will come.” He came four or five centuries later. The One would come who would teach us how we ought to pray. Thus only Jesus Christ could reveal to us how we should pray, so that our prayer might be pleasing to God. Yet even though the Lord has taught us, there are people who are uneducated and do not know how to analyze or interpret the Our Father, and there are exceptional circumstances in which we would not know how to pray or what to say. Then the Holy Spirit comes and teaches us how to pray as we ought. But when does this happen? When the Spirit of God speaks in our ears and we listen to what He says. Beloved, I have personally noticed the following. I may have had a disagreement with someone and been one hundred percent certain that I was right. Then I go to pray and bring the matter into my prayer. And there, something happens to me. I have experienced this. Yes, I bear witness to you that I have.
I discover that I was not one hundred percent right. And although I was ready to ask for a particular thing, I can no longer ask for anything, because I see that, after all, I was not in the right. What does this mean? The Spirit of God comes and tells you, “It is not as you think. Do not ask for that; ask for this.” That is what happens. A person may be left speechless in prayer. At times he begins to weep; tears flow, his heart is broken, and he has nothing to say. Yet in that brokenness he leaves his prayer having offered another kind of prayer, which is, of course, the work of the Holy Spirit. Yes, I believe this must have happened to you as well. It is true.
“The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.” The Holy Spirit Himself, he says, intercedes on our behalf with unutterable groanings. Can we understand this? The Holy Spirit, groaning with groanings beyond words? We might say that such groanings could be attributed to Jesus Christ, because, as the Epistle to the Hebrews says, during the days of His life in the flesh the Lord prayed with tears, and so forth. The Lord assumed human nature.
That is entirely natural—that is, natural for Him as man, not as God. But how can we understand the Holy Spirit interceding for us with groanings that cannot be uttered? First of all, to whom does He intercede? You know that both the Son and the Holy Spirit are equal with the Father. They are equal, although the Father is the source and principle. The Son intercedes before the Father, and the Holy Spirit also intercedes before the Father. Why does the Holy Spirit intercede before the Father? Because He is present in the Church. Of course, if you want me to speak with full dogmatic precision...
This may not have been necessary, but I will tell you. When Christ offers the sacrifice, He is both the One who offers and the One who is offered. In the Divine Liturgy we say a prayer: “The One who offers and is offered.” He Himself makes the offering. And what does He offer? Himself. As High Priest, He offers Himself as the victim, the sacrificial offering, as Saint Nicholas Cabasilas says, who was recently proclaimed a Saint. So, to whom do the words “the One who offers and is offered” refer? And to whom does He make the offering, since He is offering Himself? Pay attention: to the Father.
Certainly, the Father has the primary place in the Divine Liturgy, and the whole anaphora is addressed to the Father. Nevertheless, it is also offered to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. What does the prayer say next? “The One who offers and is offered and receives.” You make the offering, You offer Yourself, and You Yourself receive the offering. It is beyond comprehension. Therefore, every sacrifice is from the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and is offered to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit intercedes before the Father, but this intercession is also directed to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I am speaking now with exactness. Do you understand? And yet this is beyond comprehension. How can it be?
I do not understand it. Nevertheless, because the Holy Spirit abides in the Church forever, He intercedes on our behalf. How? With groanings that cannot be uttered. What are these unutterable groanings? They are groanings from which no words emerge. That is what “unutterable” means. What kind of groaning is this? Imagine, for example, a person who has been abused and overwhelmed with sorrow. He comes, collapses before us, and weeps without speaking. We understand that this person is in very great need. In some such way, we might say that the Spirit of God has groanings, though no audible word is heard. Yet we cannot say this easily. Do not forget that God does not sigh.
God does not groan. The Holy Spirit did not become incarnate. He remains the Holy Spirit and did not assume human nature. How, then, can we understand this? We do not know. And what are these unutterable, ineffable groanings? We do not know. Let us try to approach the mystery. We know that spoken words are created. The words I am speaking to you now are created. “Created” means that they are not uncreated. Your created ears are hearing me.
The Apostle Paul, when he was caught up to the third heaven, heard, he says, “ineffable words.” Why were they ineffable? “Ineffable” means that they could not be spoken, because they were uncreated: utterances, uncreated words. This is why they were things “which it is not lawful for a man to utter”—not merely because it is forbidden, but chiefly because it is impossible. Holy Scripture is created speech, and it is created speech because the Son also entered the created order: He assumed human nature. The eternal God also became created according to His humanity, clothing Himself in what is created—human nature. But when it says here that the Holy Spirit intercedes “with groanings that cannot be uttered,” perhaps this intercession is expressed in uncreated words and belongs entirely to the realm of God. What can we understand of it? Nothing. The word of God reveals only this to us:
the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf with groanings that cannot be uttered, and that is enough for us. It is enough. You stand to pray, and the Holy Spirit comes beside you and prompts you how you ought to pray. You suffer, and He suffers with you; you rejoice, and He rejoices with you. How wondrous, how truly wondrous! But do we not also have our holy angel beside us? That is another matter. We also have the Holy Spirit. Do you think we are deprived of the presence of God? No, for God is everywhere present; but the Holy Spirit is with us in a particular way. Saint Cyril continues: “Showing that it is before God.” Do you see? He makes it clear that the Spirit intercedes before God. Which God? God the Father,
God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Toward God; he does not say toward the Father, but toward God. This is what I explained to you earlier. “Often someone, having been insulted for Christ or unjustly dishonored, has faced martyrdom: torments on every side, fire and sword and wild beasts and the depths of the sea.” Someone was dishonored after being unjustly insulted. He faced martyrdom; he underwent martyrdom. Torments on every side. “Torments” means tortures coming from every direction: fire and sword and wild beasts. “Wild beasts” means savage animals, as when the Romans cast the martyrs to lions and other beasts. And the depths of the sea!
They drowned people in the depths. They tied stones to them, put them into sacks or animal hides, and sometimes put snakes or bees inside the hides as well. Then they sealed the person inside and sank him into the depths. Can you bear to hear this? I cannot. Can you? But if that hour comes, then we shall see: both you and I may be able to endure it. We cannot endure it now, because at this moment we do not have that spiritual gift. But then—perhaps then—we may receive it. “But the Holy Spirit speaks quietly within him, saying, ‘O man, wait patiently for the Lord.’” He comes, Saint Cyril says, and speaks quietly within him.
I will explain this more fully a little later. The Spirit encourages the man and says to him, “O man, wait patiently for the Lord,” because He knows what you are suffering, though He allows it. “What is happening to you is little,” meaning that what you are enduring is small, “but great are the gifts bestowed upon you”—what you will receive as a gift is exceedingly great, namely the Kingdom of God. “Suffer for a short time; you are destined to dwell eternally with the angels.” You will suffer only a little, but you will be with the angels for all eternity. “The sufferings of this present time are not worthy”—the Apostle Paul says this; what we suffer now, during this life, is not worthy—“to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us.”
For if we were to place martyrdom on one side of a scale—just as I described it earlier, and as Cyril himself describes it—and the Kingdom of God on the other, those sufferings would be nothing. Compared with the gift of the Kingdom of God, they would be mere scratches. I will not dwell on all this. I wish to dwell on just one little word that struck me. He says that when you are pushed aside, when you are despised, when one thing after another happens to you, the Holy Spirit “speaks quietly within you.” This expression comes from a verb meaning to utter a sound, to speak. But to “speak quietly within” means that He comes and tells it to you secretly.
This secret speaking, as though whispered in your ear, is something marvelous. You know that the Spirit of God is beside you, coming to prompt you. Into which ears? These bodily ears? No—the ears of the soul. And when you receive this assurance from the Holy Spirit, what does He assure you of? That, for example, “the sufferings of this present time” are nothing compared “with the glory that is to be revealed”; and that you must “wait patiently for the Lord.” These are the things the Holy Spirit whispers within, and they are heard by the person whose spiritual hearing has been trained.
My dear friends, he hears all this and is strengthened. To put it another way, this is what we mean when we say, “I have an inner assurance.” But this inner assurance does not come from me and return to me. That would form a closed circle, and within a closed circle no energy can be released, to borrow an image from physics. I cannot lift myself by pulling on my own hair, because the forces within me form a closed system. But I can lift a weight heavier than my own body, because then forces outside me are at work.
Within myself, the forces form a closed system. Therefore, I cannot give myself this inner assurance. The assurance comes from outside me. It comes from Another; it is not I. And this assurance is the Holy Spirit. Shall I put it in yet another way? You receive an inspiration, an inward certainty that this is truly so. At times a passage from Holy Scripture comes to you. The Holy Spirit has placed it before you and brings to your remembrance precisely what He wishes to remind you of, and you are strengthened. Saint Cyril expresses everything I have told you with this single verb: “He speaks quietly within.” He speaks softly into your ear.
No one else hears Him. This assurance is given personally to you; it is meant for you alone. “He portrays before the man the Kingdom of Heaven and shows him Paradise, the place of delight.” The Spirit of God comes and vividly portrays the Kingdom of Heaven before the person. Do you realize how much is contained in that word “portrays”? Listen. It is well known that the Holy Spirit never reveals the blessings of the Kingdom of God in this way until a person has freely, by his own will and deliberate choice, reached the point of martyrdom. And the martyrdom...
must already have begun. Pay attention: the martyrdom must have begun. This shows that the person first goes forward of his own accord. He accepts it, though of course the Holy Spirit speaks quietly within him, as I said before. Then, when the martyrdom becomes agonizing—and martyrdom is agonizing, my dear friends, however you look at it—the Spirit comes and gives you a foretaste of the Kingdom of God. We find this among the martyrs, from those of ancient times, beginning with the first martyr, Stephen, all the way to the most recent New Martyrs. Did you hear that?
All the way to the most recent New Martyrs. Whom shall I call to your remembrance? Let me remind you of Saint George of Ioannina. Where was he? There was already, we might say, a free Greek state. People told him to leave Ioannina and cross over. It would have been easy for him to enter free Greece. Ioannina itself, as you know, was not liberated until 1912–1913; but we are speaking of 1838, if my memory does not fail me. Saint George of Ioannina was martyred in 1838. He said, “No, I will not leave. I will remain here, and I will be martyred here.” Do you know that in the prison, after...
the tortures inflicted upon him, the other prisoners saw a light covering him during the night? That light was the Uncreated Light; it was a divine uncreated energy. Saint George of Ioannina received the Uncreated Light, the divine uncreated energy that is the light of the Kingdom of God. This is the Kingdom of God: Christ allows His creatures, human beings, to receive what belongs to Him—the Uncreated Light, the divine glory. This is the Kingdom of God: Christ and the divine uncreated energy.
This is the Kingdom of God. And so the others were permitted to see it. God allows this in order to honor His martyr. At that very hour, however, the martyr himself receives foretastes—plural, many foretastes—of the Kingdom of God, and then it becomes impossible for him to turn back. He does not wish to turn back; he gives everything. This is the source of the martyrs’ joy and courage: they have tasted the Kingdom of God. Would you like to see this in the martyrs from the first to the last? Saint Stephen confessed Christ before the council in that great defense of his, that thunderous confession which we studied for an entire year.
Remember how, at one point, his accusers were grinding their teeth, their hearts cut through with rage, ready to rush upon him and tear him apart. Saint Stephen saw this, but at that very moment he also saw the glory of God and of Christ. “I see,” he said, “I behold Jesus standing,” and so forth. But Christ is the Kingdom. Stephen therefore received a foretaste of the Kingdom. Under no circumstances would he draw back in fear, because he had tasted the Kingdom of God. Yet this happens only when the martyrdom begins to become unbearable. It does not happen at the beginning. At first, room is left for the person himself to act through his own faith and love.
But then the Spirit of God comes to his aid in the martyrdom, and the martyr receives a foretaste of the Kingdom of God. “And He also shows him Paradise, the place of delight,” Saint Cyril says. “The martyrs, though compelled to turn their bodily faces toward the judges, were by the Spirit’s power already in Paradise, and they despised the terrors visible before them.” When they were being tried in court, or later when their torturers stood before them in prison or elsewhere, they were compelled to look upon those...
monstrous faces, those people capable of inflicting martyrdom upon their fellow human beings. “Yet by the Spirit’s power,” he says—and this is extremely important—their hearts reached the Kingdom of God, reached Christ, reached Paradise. They were “already in Paradise.” And what did they do then? “They despised the terrors visible before them”; they scorned those apparently dreadful, fearsome, and evil things. My dear friends, you cannot stand firm as a martyr in any other way unless you have this counterweight. And now we enter the twenty-first paragraph. “And do you wish to know...”
the power of the Holy Spirit?” The martyrs bore witness through martyrdom. Do you wish to learn that the martyrs bear witness by the power of the Holy Spirit? “The Savior says to His disciples.” The Lord said to His disciples, and to the disciples of every age and generation: “When they bring you before the synagogues, rulers, and authorities, do not be anxious about how or what you should answer, or what you should say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” “For it is impossible to bear witness concerning Christ unless you bear witness through the Holy Spirit.” The proof...
that the Holy Spirit inspires the martyr is the word of the Lord: do not be anxious about what you will do or say. Do not hire a lawyer when you face such matters; there is no need. The Holy Spirit will be your advocate, your spokesman, your ally, and your defender. He will tell you what you ought to say. My dear friends, I do not know whether you have read ancient and modern accounts of martyrdom, especially the more recent accounts of the New Martyrs from our own region—I mean the whole Greek world. When I say the Greek world, I do not mean only mainland Greece, but also Asia Minor, Constantinople, Cyprus, and all the other places where the Greek people were spread.
Throughout this far-flung Greek world, we have many New Martyrs who, as is well known, were martyred under Ottoman rule. In all their trials, you will find the same recurring answer given before the court. What was that answer? “I am a Christian.” But do you hear what I am telling you? “I am a Christian.” The night before last, on Saturday evening, I was reading the account of the martyrdom of Saint Polydoros, the New Martyr. What a fearful thing! I was also reading the martyrdom of Saint Michael Paknanas, the gardener.
He was martyred in Athens. And where exactly? On one of the columns—or pillars, if you prefer—of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, beside the road toward Phaleron, on our left as we travel along Syngrou Avenue, among those ancient columns, there is a very simple inscription: “Today, on this day of this month, Michael Paknanas, the gardener, was martyred.” How strikingly simple! This young man had done nothing. He may not even have been twenty years old. His only offense was that he refused to become a Turk—that is, to convert to Islam. This was a method used by the Turks. Do not forget these things about the Turks.
People have forgotten them. Do you hear me? The Greeks of Asia Minor used to say, “If you make a Turk your friend, keep a stick close at hand.” Listen to that saying; it says a great deal. Pay attention—it says a great deal. Do not put your trust in such friendships. We may make use of them for practical reasons, I suppose, but do not place your trust in friendship with our neighbors. Take care. You may ask me, “Then what should we do?” I do not know; I am simply warning you. Now the executioner took pity on Saint Michael. When they went to behead him, after he had endured many tortures, the executioner merely cut him a little here, on the neck, with the sword or axe—only a small cut. Saint Michael said to him, “I told you: I am a Christian. I will not become a Muslim.” The executioner cut him a little more deeply.
“I told you, I am a Christian. Strike—for the Faith.” Then the executioner became angry and cut off his head. Do you hear this? Who told him to say those words, so few and simple? The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit. For the words, “Strike—for the Faith,” are more eloquent than all the oratory of Demosthenes and Chrysostom ever spoken. They are the height of eloquence. And only the Holy Spirit inspires such eloquence. You may ask, “With such utter simplicity?” Yet God the Word (Logos) Himself assumed human nature in absolute simplicity.
Such simplicity, then, is proper to God. As the Apostle Paul says, it is so that “the word of the Cross”—that is, the preaching of the Cross—may not be emptied of its power. What is the Cross? Could there be any greater kenosis, any greater self-emptying and simplicity, than the Cross? This is why the Spirit of God rejects human rhetoric that seeks to persuade, and chooses the opposite path.
Saint Cyril adds in paragraph twenty-one: “For it is impossible to bear witness concerning Christ unless you bear witness through the Holy Spirit. For if no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit, how then can anyone give his life for Jesus except by the Holy Spirit?” He says that this is impossible, just as the Apostle Paul says in First Corinthians, chapter twelve, verse three. If it is impossible to confess Jesus as Lord—that is, as God, for “Lord” means God—then you cannot accept Jesus as God unless this is taught to you...
by the Holy Spirit. I have told you this many times. Of course, this is only the first step, but it is a fundamental one. It is the foundation, because you cannot live the spiritual life otherwise. How can you live it if you do not confess that Jesus is God? And how can I know, at this first step, that I have the Spirit of God? If you accept that Jesus is God, you have the Holy Spirit. Take care: this is only the first step, lest anyone say, “Ah, then everything is settled.” There are many steps in the Holy Spirit—endless steps. Therefore, whoever does not confess that Jesus is God—and how many people do not—does not have the Holy Spirit.
Saint Cyril now says: “To confess Jesus Christ, you need the Holy Spirit. Then, to suffer martyrdom for Christ and give your whole life, do you not need the Holy Spirit?” So we see that without the Holy Spirit it is impossible to bear the witness of martyrdom. It is impossible. And now we enter paragraph twenty-two: “Great indeed, almighty in His gifts, and wondrous is the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit is great, almighty, and wondrous in the gifts He comes to bestow.
Here, of course, Saint Cyril has his audience before him—the catechumens. It does not matter that many centuries have passed since about the year 350 after Christ; we can bring the scene to life. Just as it is here among us now, we might say. “Consider,” he says, addressing his audience. “How many of you are seated here now? How many souls are present?” How many of us are present here? Do you see how many souls there are? “He is present in our midst and acts through His divine uncreated energies in each person as is fitting.”
“He sees the disposition of each person, his inner thought and his conscience, what we say, what we understand, and what we believe.” He is present. The Holy Spirit is here in our midst. And in each person, Saint Cyril says, He acts fittingly—that is, in the way appropriate to that person. He sees your inner thought and what you are thinking. He sees your conscience, what we say, what we understand, what we think, and what we believe. He sees everything. He is present. Saint Cyril makes this presence tangible here, and this is not, you understand, something merely psychological. The Holy Spirit truly is present. And so Saint Cyril makes tangible here...
for his audience the presence of the Holy Spirit: how He watches over them and sees the conscience, the heart, the free disposition, and the logismoi—the intrusive thoughts—of each person listening to the Word of God. This is a living reality. Please, do you understand? It is very important. He sees what I am thinking within myself, and He sees what you are thinking. Yes, inwardly I may say, “Should I say this? No, I should not. I should say that.” The Spirit of God sees this. And if we submit ourselves to the Spirit of God, I will say what He desires and will not say what He does not desire. “What has been said is truly great—but what could be small concerning Him?”
It is indeed true that, as we sit here, the Holy Spirit sees and hears everything. “Now pay attention to me”—this is simply an expression meaning, “Listen carefully.” “With your understanding illumined by Him, consider how many Christians there are throughout this whole community.” How many Christians, he says, are in this community—meaning the community of Jerusalem? “And how many throughout the whole province of Palestine?” How many faithful are there in all Palestine? “Then broaden your nous, your spiritual intellect, beyond this province to the whole Roman Empire.” Go farther outward. Broaden your thought and consider all the Christians throughout the Roman realm, the whole empire. When we say “Roman”...
do not forget that this was the Byzantine era, although they called themselves Romans then—hence also the term Romios. Then extend your vision and behold the whole world. From here, stretch out your thoughts and see the whole world: the Persian people, the nations of India, the Goths and Sarmatians, the Gauls and Spaniards, the Moors—meaning those from Mauretania—the Libyans and Ethiopians, and all the countless others: all those whom we do not know or cannot name now. Broaden your thought, he says.
There are nations whose very names have not reached us, whose names we do not even know. Look at every nation: bishops, priests, deacons, monastics, virgins, and all the rest of the laity. And behold the great Protector and Giver of gifts, who throughout the whole world grants purity to one person, and other gifts to others. The Holy Spirit watches over them all throughout the whole world, across the entire inhabited earth. He is not present only here where we are, but wherever the faithful are throughout the world. Everywhere He watches over them; to one He inspires chastity, and to another perpetual virginity.
To one He grants lifelong virginity, to another almsgiving, to another freedom from possessions, and to another the power to drive away hostile spirits. He grants the power and the gift to cast out demons. And just as a single ray of light shines upon and illumines everything, so the Holy Spirit illumines those who have eyes to see. Thus, he says, the Holy Spirit illumines those who have eyes. If someone is blind and is not counted worthy of grace, let him not blame the Spirit, but his own unbelief. If someone says, “I cannot see; I have received nothing,” let him not turn against the Holy Spirit.
Turn instead against your own unbelief. I read this paragraph very quickly. It simply presented this image, we might say. Now paragraph twenty-three: “Have you seen His power throughout the whole world?” Do you see the power of the Holy Spirit throughout the world? Do not remain upon the earth. Rise, then, and ascend higher. Do not remain on the earth; do not become earthbound, do not feed on dust, do not be a materialist. Raise yourself on high. If this is how you see things, then ascend in your understanding even to the first heaven. And there you see—we see...
You have reached it: countless myriads of angels. Do you wish to see? Leave the earth, look upward, ascend to the first heaven. See how innumerable the angels are. Dogmatic theology teaches that the number of the angels is infinite. Do you know what that means? Suppose you write the number one on a board. Add one zero and it becomes ten; add another and it becomes one hundred; a third and it becomes one thousand, and so on. Keep writing zeros after the one. How far will you go? As far as you wish.
Such is the number of the angels—an awe-inspiring and astonishing thing. Have you seen all these angels, he asks? Now come, rise still higher in your thought. There, he says, you will find the archangels. He now refers to the nine ranks of angels: behold myriads of spirits; behold powers, principalities, authorities, thrones, and dominions. These are among the nine ranks. Over them all, the Paraclete, appointed by God, is Overseer, Teacher, and Sanctifier. The Holy Spirit watches over them all, both human beings and angels. For all of them He is God, Teacher, and Sanctifier. I wish to dwell only on the word “Sanctifier.”
The Spirit of God is the One who sanctifies rational beings. Yes, the Spirit of God sanctifies them. Who does this? The Paraclete. “Elijah, Elisha, and Isaiah among human beings have need of Him; Michael and Gabriel among the angels also have need of Him.” The Prophet Elijah needs the Spirit of God, and Elisha needs the Spirit of God as well. Do you know who caught up the Prophet Elijah from the earth and carried him toward heaven? Who do you think it was? Shall I put it as a question and make this a dialogue? It was the Holy Spirit. How do we know?
Did not the Holy Spirit also catch up Philip? That case is clear. We have been studying this in our Sunday lessons on the Acts of the Apostles. The Holy Spirit, it says, caught up Philip, carried him away, and set him down at Azotus. Who, then, caught up the Prophet Elijah? The Holy Spirit. Who had need of Him, then? Did Elijah not need the Spirit of God? Yes—and Elisha likewise. Consider also the prophetic gift that Elisha requested from the Prophet. He said, “I ask you to give me your prophetic gift.” Of course, this was not something the Prophet Elijah could grant on his own. “Very well,” the inspired Prophet told him, “I shall cast down my sheepskin mantle to you,” for he would no longer need it where he was going. The mantle was nothing more than a sheepskin.
“I shall cast it down to you,” he said, “and when you receive it—when you catch it and take it—then you will receive the gift.” And do you know what Elisha asked for? A double portion of the prophetic gift. A double portion—not in comparison with the Prophet Elijah, but in comparison with the sons of the prophets. Take note of this. It has a basis in the law, because the firstborn received a double inheritance according to what we might call civil law. He received twice the inheritance because he assumed responsibility for his parents. So Elisha applies this spiritually to Elijah: “I am with you; I am your companion, and I desire a double portion.” “You have asked a difficult thing.” Ah, you are asking for much! But if you receive the sheepskin mantle, you will obtain it.
Thus, the Holy Spirit grants and confirms what the Prophet Elijah says concerning Elisha. And Saint Cyril says further that, just as Elijah and Elisha among human beings need the Holy Spirit, so Michael and Gabriel among the angels also need Him. My dear friends, it is the Holy Spirit who governs the angels. Do not forget this. Do you know who will raise us from the dead? The Father, of course, as I told you earlier. And the Son, of course—forgive me, I meant the Son. And certainly the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will raise us from the dead.
And do you know who will give us the body we shall receive? The Holy Spirit. For the new body we receive will be called a spiritual body, as the Apostle Paul reveals to us. A spiritual body does not mean an immaterial body. It means the old body—the material body formed from the earth—but no longer subject to natural and biological laws. To what will this new body be subject, this body that will not eat or drink, will not grow weary, fall ill, or die? It will be subject to the Holy Spirit, to the commands of the Holy Spirit. That is why...
That is why it is called a spiritual body. With this brief consideration of the Spirit of God, which Saint Cyril has helped us to make, we see that He beholds all things and watches over all things. As Saint Cyril will say a little further on, “Nothing among created beings is equal in honor to Him.” Nothing that has come into being—that is, nothing created, no creature—is equal to the Holy Spirit, because He is the third Person of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit beholds all things, fashions all things, and sustains all things. And when the Son brought creation into being...
The Holy Spirit was hovering over the abyss—pardon me, over the waters—and, so to speak, was brooding over life, for life appeared within the waters, and it was the Holy Spirit who bestowed that life. This is why the Holy Spirit also gives eternal life. That is all for this evening, my dear friends.

Βέβαια, έχει την κυρία θέση μέσα στη Θεία Λειτουργία, όλη η αναφορά είναι στον Πατέρα, αλλά παρ’ όλα ταύτα είναι και εις τον Υιόν, είναι και εις το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Γι’ αυτό τι λέει η ευχή στη συνέχεια; «Ὁ προσφέρων καὶ προσφερόμενος καὶ προσδεχόμενος». Συ προσφέρεις, τον εαυτό Σου προσφέρεις και τον εαυτό Σου προσδέχεσαι. Ακατανόητο πράγμα. Συνεπώς, πάσα θυσία είναι από τον Πατέρα, τον Υιόν και το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, για τον Πατέρα, τον Υιόν και το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο μεσιτεύει στον Πατέρα, αλλά η μεσιτεία αναφέρεται και στον Πατέρα και στον Υιόν και στο Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Τώρα ακριβολογώ. Το καταλαβαίνετε; Είναι ακατανόητο πράγμα όμως αυτό. Πώς;
Έχει αρχίσει. Προσέξτε, και το μαρτύριον να έχει αρχίσει. Αυτό δείχνει ότι ο άνθρωπος μόνος του προχωρεί. Αποδέχεται, αφού βεβαίως το Πνεύμα το Άγιον υποφθέγγεται εις αυτόν. Εκείνο που σας είπα προηγουμένως. Ύστερα από λίγο, όταν το μαρτύριο είναι βασανιστικό — αγαπητοί μου, είναι βασανιστικό το μαρτύριο, όπως και να το πάρετε — τότε έρχεται και σου δίνει μία γεύση της Βασιλείας του Θεού. Αυτό το συναντούμε, θα έλεγα, εις τους μάρτυρες, από τους αρχαίους, από τον πρώτον μάρτυρα, τον Στέφανον, μέχρι τους τελευταίους νεομάρτυρες. Το ακούσατε;
Το Πνεύμα του Θεού είναι εκείνο που αγιάζει τις λογικές υπάρξεις. Ναι, το Πνεύμα του Θεού αγιάζει. Ποιος; Αυτός ο Παράκλητος. Τούτου χρείαν έχει Ηλίας και Ελισσαίος και Ησαΐας εν ανθρώποις. Τούτου χρείαν έχει και Μιχαήλ και Γαβριήλ εν αγγέλοις. Το Πνεύμα του Θεού έχει ανάγκη ο προφήτης Ηλίας, το Πνεύμα του Θεού έχει ανάγκη και ο Ελισσαίος. Ξέρετε ποιος άρπαξε τον προφήτην Ηλία από τη γη και τον πήγε ως εις ουρανόν; Ποιος λέτε; Να θέσω ερώτημα, να κάνω διάλογο; Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Από πού το ξέρουμε;
