Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the Holy Spirit abides and acts within the Church, making spiritual life possible. Saint Cyril warns that the word “spirit” has several meanings and must not lead Christians to confuse the Holy Spirit with the human soul, wind, or demonic spirits. Christian chastity, asceticism, and voluntary poverty bear spiritual fruit only when practiced through God’s grace and for His sake.

And so, my dear friends, where had we reached last year when we stopped our study of Saint Cyril? I will tell you, because of course you do not remember. I am in Saint Cyril’s Sixteenth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns the Holy Spirit. It is a very interesting catechesis, because it speaks about the Spirit of God and gives us a great many signs and characteristics that unquestionably help us. It is enough to say that the Spirit of God is the One who abides in the Church, and the Spirit of God is the One who accomplishes everything within the Church. What we call the spiritual life is nothing other than life in the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in the Church is of fundamental importance, and so is the knowledge we ought to have concerning the Holy Spirit. We are at paragraph seventeen of this catechesis. In the preceding paragraph, Saint Cyril explained that the Spirit of God enabled the prophets to see the past, the present, or the future. That is where we are, and now we read paragraph seventeen:
“Peter was not present with Ananias and Sapphira when they sold their property, but through the Spirit he was present.” You remember that incident. There are many other incidents as well, which of course I will not describe, so that we are not delayed. You remember the incident involving the Apostle Peter. It is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. Ananias and his wife Sapphira had been baptized and were Christians. They saw others selling their fields,
so they too sold a field and brought the money to the Apostles. But they did not bring all the money. As husband and wife, they made an unholy agreement with each other: they would give a little, keep much for themselves, freely eat at the common tables, and also enjoy the good reputation of having been benefactors. Naturally, as the Apostle Peter told them, they had every right either to sell or not to sell; and if they sold it, the money remained under their authority. The whole wickedness lay in their use of this lie. Saint Cyril now says: When Ananias came and said, “I have brought this money from the sale of the field,” had Peter been present when he made that agreement with his wife?
No. What, then, enabled the Apostle Peter to know about it? The Holy Spirit. He illumined Peter so that he could see the entire history behind the deed. That is why Peter said to Ananias, “What made you lie to the Holy Spirit?” He does not say that he lied to Jesus Christ; he says that he lied to the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit is present in the Church, and it was the Holy Spirit who gave Peter the knowledge to discern this entire affair. “Why,” he says, “has Satan filled your heart, so that you should lie
to the Holy Spirit?” Why did the devil come and fill your heart with his presence, bringing you to the point of lying to the Holy Spirit? “There was no accuser.” There was no third person standing nearby to accuse Ananias. “There was no witness.” No witness was present. “From where, then, came the knowledge of what had happened?” How did Peter know what had taken place? “While it remained unsold, did it not remain yours? And after it was sold, was it not under your authority? Why have you conceived this deed in your heart?” What made you do this? “Through the grace of the Spirit, the unlearned Peter knew what not even the wise men of the Greeks knew.”
Peter, he says, learned through the grace of the Holy Spirit what not even the wise men of the Greeks were able to know. Do you see, then? The presence of the Holy Spirit comes to holy people and reveals the hidden things of others. Who reveals them? The Holy Spirit. Indeed, the Apostle Paul says this so that you do not imagine it belongs only to the realm of the prophets. He says that if someone enters your assembly, and then someone in the congregation who has been illumined by the Spirit of God rises and discloses that person’s life, the visitor will be astonished and will come to believe in God, in Jesus Christ.
The One who reveals another person’s life is the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril gives a similar example concerning Elisha, the prophet who had been a disciple of the Prophet Elijah: “After Elisha had freely healed Naaman’s leprosy, Gehazi accepted payment for the achievement of another, receiving wages for something he had not accomplished.” He took money from Naaman and hid it in darkness. But darkness is not hidden from a saint. When Gehazi returned, Elisha questioned him. Just as Peter later asked about the field and its price, so Elisha examined Gehazi.
Elisha knew not only where he had gone, but also what he had done. “You came out of darkness, and into darkness you shall go. You sold the healing of the leper, and you shall inherit his leprosy. I,” he says, “fulfilled the command of Him who said, ‘Freely you have received; freely give.’ But you have sold grace. Receive, then, the consequence of your sale.” And what did Elisha say to him? “Did not my heart go with you?” It was not that I myself was there, though confined within my body; rather, the Spirit given to me by God saw things far away and clearly showed me what was happening elsewhere. I read the whole passage so that I could now tell you the story. Once, you see...
a Syrian named Naaman came to Elisha. He had learned of the Prophet Elisha’s renown from a young girl whom the Syrians had taken captive. When her master, the commander Naaman, contracted leprosy, she said, “Why do you not go to my homeland and ask the Prophet Elisha to heal you?” So Naaman came to be healed. It is, of course, a long and very important story. But to be brief, the prophet sent him to wash seven times in the Jordan River. At first Naaman doubted the instruction, but in the end he accepted it and was healed. He then returned to give the prophet rich gifts. The prophet did not come out of his house, but told his servant Gehazi, “Tell him to go in peace, and nothing more.” Nothing more—neither money nor even a garment. Naaman had extremely costly garments that he wished to give the prophet. But no: let him go in peace and return to his homeland. Here the prophet is saying, “I learned to receive freely and to give freely.” “I learned this from my Lord,” says the Prophet Elisha. Gehazi saw those goods and coveted them. “What foolishness! My master, my lord, is taking none of these things.” Naaman departed, but Gehazi could not withstand the temptation.
Once Naaman had gone some distance, Gehazi ran after him, caught up with him, and said, “You see, some visitors have come to us, and my master, my lord Elisha, told me to ask you for a few garments and some money.” “Very well,” said Naaman. “Gladly.” And so he gave them to him. The servant took them with great delight, carried them secretly into the cellar of the house, and hid them. Then Gehazi appeared before Elisha as though nothing had happened. “Gehazi, where were you?” Elisha asked. “I was here. I did not go anywhere.” “Gehazi, when you went to meet Naaman, I was with you and saw you.” Oh, how fearful this is! Listen to this; listen carefully.
“I was indeed shut up within the house, but the Spirit whom God had given me”—which Spirit? The Holy Spirit—“enabled me to see things far away, and clearly showed me what was happening elsewhere.” He showed me in detail what was taking place in another place. Why did you do this? Because you did this, you sold the grace of God. Therefore, Naaman’s leprosy will come upon you.
And Naaman—forgive me, Gehazi—was never healed. He died a leper. Indeed, you can go and read this in Fourth Kingdoms, chapter five. It is worth reading; go and see. Gehazi, it says, began making all kinds of plans: “With these garments I shall buy a few fields and some olive trees, establish a household, and live better.” Do you hear this? Do you hear? It is fearful. Saint Cyril now says: “Do you see how the Spirit not only removes ignorance, but also instills knowledge?”
The Spirit of God does not merely take away ignorance; He also places knowledge and sure awareness within us. Do you see how the Holy Spirit illumines souls? My dear friends, I do not know whether you sometimes become afraid when you hear that a person may possess spiritual discernment and see hidden things. Perhaps you fear that if you go to such a person, he will expose you. Yes, this is what spiritual discernment means: with the help of the Holy Spirit, he sees into your soul. At times he sees a grave sin and makes it known; and sometimes he may even reveal it in the presence of others.
It may be revealed publicly. How and when does that happen? When God, in His providence, determines that it must be publicly revealed. All these things are the work of the Spirit of God. Remember the Prophet Elijah. Did he not expose the entire plot of Ahab and Jezebel? Ahab was distressed because he could not obtain Naboth’s field. He had, of course, asked to buy it.
Naboth would not sell it. “No, my king,” he said, “I will not sell it; it is my ancestral inheritance.” Besides, there was a law forbidding people to sell their ancestral fields, for reasons connected with the tribes, as we have discussed before. “I cannot go any further; I cannot sell it.” So Ahab became distressed.
“What is wrong?” Jezebel asked him. He explained what had happened. “Listen,” she said, “do not be upset. I will arrange the matter.” She found false witnesses to appear in court and testify that Naboth had blasphemed the name of God. The prescribed penalty was stoning. So they staged a judicial proceeding, and Naboth was stoned. How could the poor man prove that the witnesses were lying and that he was innocent? Then the Prophet Elijah swept down from the mountain like a whirlwind, entered the palace, and exposed to Ahab
the plot contrived by him and his wife. “You will pay dearly for what you have done,” he said. “Your wife instigated it, and you allowed yourself to be led astray so that you could take Naboth’s field. You will be killed, and dogs will lick the blood flowing from your wounds. The waters used to wash away your blood will be the same waters in which prostitutes bathe outside the city. And dogs will devour your wife.” It happened exactly so—everything the prophet had said, my dear friends. He revealed both what had happened and what would happen.
By whose power? By the power of the Holy Spirit. My dear friends, these things are fearful. Now we come to Isaiah, in paragraph eighteen. “Isaiah, nearly a thousand years beforehand”—Isaiah spoke somewhere around a thousand years before Christ, or more precisely about eight hundred years—“saw Zion as a hut.” What was Zion? It was a city: Jerusalem is Zion. Yet he did not see it as a city, but as a tent. A city has neighborhoods and marketplaces; it is adorned and surrounded by walls. But he says, “Zion shall be plowed like a field.” There were fortifications, of course.
The city had fine buildings, beautiful marketplaces, and ornaments. Yet how did the prophet see it? As a tent—simply as a tent. To be more precise, as one of those little huts made of straw that we build in the fields. What do we call them?
I will use the word, although the comparison is not exact: a field hut used at harvest time. It is a very simple structure where a farmer stores what belongs to his field. You do not find such huts in Thessaly, because people there can quickly return to their storehouses and homes. They are found in remote villages and on islands where transportation is lacking.
I have seen this myself on the islands, where almost every little field has one of these simple huts. The farmer can even cook something there. So that is how Jerusalem will be left: like such a hut—or, more precisely, like a shelter made of grass in the middle of a field—and that field “shall be plowed.” The prophet speaks beforehand of what has been fulfilled in our own times. And what did he foretell? Something that has already taken place. When did it happen? After Christ. Its first phase took place during the Babylonian captivity.
But a second phase came in AD 70. The city was literally not only destroyed but even plowed by the Romans, so that it might never rise again. Yet it was God’s will that the city should live again, because it still had much testimony to offer in history. And the city has a twofold significance: historical Jerusalem is a type of the Church, and historical Jerusalem is also a type of the destruction of the world. When the Lord says that nothing like the destruction of Jerusalem had ever happened, nor would happen again until the end of the world’s history, this is what He means. He means that the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 is a type
of the destruction of the world. And you see, Saint Cyril says, that although the prophet lived nearly a thousand years earlier, he revealed this. He did not describe the city adorned with splendid buildings; he saw it as a plowed field with a hut standing in the middle. Isaiah, you know, uses the image of this hut elsewhere as well—I believe it is in the second or third chapter; I do not remember exactly—when he speaks of Jerusalem as a hut in a field of cucumbers and melons, cucumbers to be precise, and describes how that field is abandoned. Just north of here, on the road to Thessaloniki, beyond Zachari, there is a field of watermelons.
The watermelons have been abandoned. The prophet says that the city will suffer that same desolation. It is a fearful thing—and see how exact the prophecy is. Pay attention, he says, to the precision of the prophecy: “The daughter of Zion shall be left like a booth in a vineyard and like a fruit-keeper’s hut in a cucumber field.” The Greek word is pronounced sikyēlatō. The “fruit-keeper’s hut” is the shelter where they store the produce of the field—the simple field hut we were speaking about.
A sikyēlatos is a cucumber field. Around September or October, all its produce is gone and the field is abandoned. That, the prophet says, is how the city of Jerusalem will be. “And the place has indeed been filled with cucumber fields.” Let me not explain that further. Do you see how the Holy Spirit illumines the Saints? Do you see, Saint Cyril says, how the Holy Spirit illumines holy people? “Lest, because the same word has several meanings, you be carried away toward something else, hold fast to the precise meaning.”
What is this sharing of the same name? Pay attention and you will see. It concerns other kinds of spirit. Here Saint Cyril is speaking about the Holy Spirit. You may remember that in paragraph fifteen, which we discussed last year, we said that the word “spirit” can also refer to an evil spirit—that is, to demons. Saint Cyril gave us a very clear and helpful explanation there: the word “spirit” has many meanings. It can mean wind; it can mean the soul; it can mean a demon; and it can mean the sense or meaning of something. We say, “The spirit of this passage is...” meaning, “The sense of this passage is...” And it can also mean the Holy Spirit. Therefore, he says, take care that because the same word is used for other things, you are not carried away toward them. Instead, “hold fast to the precise meaning”: distinguish each kind of spirit and know which is the Holy Spirit. Take care not to wander into the realm of other spirits. Remain with the Spirit of God. And now, please pay attention to something very beautiful in paragraph nineteen.
“Has a logismos—an intrusive thought—about chastity or virginity never entered your heart while you were sitting quietly? That is His teaching.” Saint Cyril says that when you are sitting there—especially if you are young, and particularly a young man—and a thought of chastity or virginity comes to you, have you ever wondered where it came from? Then understand this: “That is His teaching.” Whose teaching? The teaching of the Holy Spirit. That thought which came to you is the teaching of the Holy Spirit. He came and said to you:
“Remain chaste.” He came and said, “Remain in virginity.” For no one can even conceive the desire for chastity, much less for virginity, without grace. The difference is this: chastity means that, although I was not careful before, from now on I will guard myself; virginity means that I have always guarded myself. That is the difference. No one can ever attain such a state unless the Spirit of God comes to him. This is why, when the Lord spoke about virginity—not merely chastity, but virginity—He stressed that a person could never attain it without His power: the power of Jesus Christ, of the Holy Spirit, and so forth.
This is what the Lord means when He says, “No one can attain it except by My power.” In the Gospel according to John He says, “Without Me you can do nothing.” You may ask, “Could not people outside Christianity attain virginity?” You might indeed raise that question. Were there not people in the ancient Greek world who taught, spoke about, and lived in virginity? I need only remind you of Hippolytus
in the play by Euripides, who proclaims that he lives in virginity and worships the goddess Artemis, who was regarded as a virgin. So you may ask: do we not find virginity outside Christianity? Yes—but first, who told you that the Spirit of God did not sometimes illumine the pagan world, enabling people to attain certain things that were better and more elevated? Who says that the Spirit of God could not have done this? And there is something more. If the Spirit of God is absent from a deed performed by a person, that deed remains fruitless. So virginity may be present, but if it has been separated from God—and pay close attention to this—and is practiced for the sake of pagan gods, it has no value. Therefore, the question is not merely what you attain, but in whose name you attain it. Saint Cyril continues: “Has it not often happened that a maiden, already at the threshold of the bridal chamber, fled because He taught her the way of virginity?” A young woman may be preparing for marriage and then suddenly depart.
She follows virginity; she takes the path of virginity. I will remind you of an example from the lives of the Saints. Though this was not a young woman but a man, Saint John the Hut-Dweller was to be married, but he fled. He lived for many years as an ascetic and later returned and made a little hut outside the door of his family home—hence his name, the Hut-Dweller. No one recognized him, not even his parents. But shortly before his death—he died very young—he revealed who he was. As proof, he had a copy of the New Testament, of Holy Scripture, which his parents had given him as a gift.
He then showed it to them as proof that he was their child, and he died. Saint Cyril asks: who taught all these things and brought them about? The Holy Spirit. I am certain, however, that if someone heard this teaching today, he might find many things to criticize. But people think in one way, while the Spirit of God thinks in another. “Has it not often happened that a man distinguished in royal palaces despised wealth and rank after being taught by the Holy Spirit?” How many people have lived in the surroundings of a palace and possessed both high office and wealth! Let me remind you
of Saint Arsenius, whose feast, if I remember correctly, is celebrated on May 8. During the Byzantine era, he left the imperial palace in Constantinople and went to the African desert to become an ascetic. What does Saint Cyril say? “He despised wealth and rank.” He despised them...
He scorned them, cast them aside, and abandoned both his wealth and his rank. Who told him to do this? The Holy Spirit. “Has it not often happened that a young man, seeing beauty, lowered his eyes, fled from the sight, and escaped defilement? Do you ask who brought this about? The Holy Spirit taught the young man’s soul.” How often does a young man walk along the street and see someone beautiful—a beauty which might draw him into sin and inflame carnal passions? What does he do? He lowers his gaze; that is, he closes his eyes or turns his head the other way, as we would say, and walks away so that he will not look upon what lies before him. In this way he avoids defilement: he avoids entering into temptation and bringing defilement upon both soul and body.
Understand, then, that the One who inspired this young man and taught his soul was the Holy Spirit. Do you see? We could therefore say this concerning young people—and Glory to God, there are many young people who guard themselves. At one moment they may fail to be watchful, but at another they are watchful. When they failed to guard themselves, they betrayed the prompting of the Holy Spirit. But when they did guard themselves, they followed the prompting of the Holy Spirit. So I would ask you: if I become aware that I found the strength to turn my head away and not look...
at beauty that does not belong to me, as John Chrysostom says, and not become involved in something through which I might fall into degradation—and if I know that it was the Holy Spirit who helped me not to look—how should I feel? Perhaps you would ask, “How can I possess the Spirit of God, and how can I know that I possess the Spirit of God?” Here is the answer. We received the Holy Spirit through our Baptism and Chrismation, in which we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. From that moment, the Spirit of God has been at work within us. We simply do not allow Him to act, because we insist on clinging to our own opinions. That is why, as I said, on one occasion you fell. This time, however, you did not fall.
The Apostle Paul says, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Why does he tell you not to grieve the Holy Spirit? Because He is the One who inspires you to do what is good. If you listened to Him, He rejoices. If you did not listen, then you grieved the Holy Spirit. There is also a passage—where is it written? In Saint James. How can I find it at this moment? It says something like, “The Spirit of God yearns with jealousy.” I do not remember the exact wording, so I will give you its meaning. The Holy Spirit...
is the One who loves us so very much. How much? Beyond measure! We cannot comprehend how deeply the Spirit of God loves us. But when we flirt with things that belong to another, then we put His love to the test—listen carefully, I say this with reverence—and we provoke what, speaking in human terms as Scripture itself does, may be called His jealousy. The image is taken from husband and wife. When a wife looks toward another man, or toward other men, she arouses, stirs up, and inflames her husband’s jealousy.
This is in keeping with the spirit of Holy Scripture. Does God Himself not say, “I am a jealous God”? What does “jealous” mean? It means one who is moved by jealousy. God is jealous, my beloved—but pay attention. Jealousy is one of the passions, and God is free from the passions; God has no passions. What, then, does this mean? The image is taken from human life. God is not jealous in a passionate human sense, but in many books of the Old Testament He says, “I am a jealous God,” to show this: you are the bride, the Church, My bride—and take note that it is the Son who speaks in the Old Testament. If you flirt with idols, you provoke in Me what is called jealousy, like the jealousy that would be provoked
in a husband when his wife looked at other men. And what might the husband then do? He becomes angry and strikes his wife. This image is used to show that God comes to chastise His people when they flirt with foreign gods, with idols. In the same way, the Spirit of God, whom we possess, says that He may even come to chastise us because He wants us to belong to Him. If only we truly knew who the Spirit of God is, we would never wish to depart from the Spirit of God, from the Holy Spirit. I say this so that we may keep it in mind. Saint Cyril continues: “There is such great greed in the world, and yet Christians live without possessions.”
“Because of the promise of the Spirit.” There is so much greed in the world, he says: “Let me work so that I may eat, and let me seize whatever I can so that I may possess it.” Is there not a popular saying like that? Yet amid all this greed in the world, there are Christians, as he says, who live without possessions. They are content with what they earn and, in the end, accumulate no property. Indeed, non-possession is a virtue. But take care not to misunderstand it. For married people, I would say that they should not own excessive property, because that is unquestionably greed. Yet acquiring a certain amount of property...
Material things—not merely an estate or a field, but material goods with which to help our children and so forth—is not blameworthy. Non-possession is a particular calling, usually joined to virginity. That is why, in celibacy—that is, in monasticism—we have these three things: first, virginity; second, non-possession; and third, obedience. Therefore, a monk who acquires property—that is, personal wealth—breaks his vow. Non-possession is a gift of grace, and a person must always keep watch over his nous, the spiritual intellect, so that he never acquires property, if he is living...
This gift of non-possession. This is a subtle point. Here, however, I do not think he is speaking of absolute non-possession, because Saint Cyril is addressing people who live in the city. They are receiving catechesis and will soon be baptized. They are the catechumens preparing for illumination, and they will soon be baptized. They are men and women with homes, families, and so forth. So perhaps the phrase “Christians live without possessions” means that they are not great landowners and do not accumulate excessive property. In other words, they are free from that greed which says, “I must have more, and more, and more.” Who is it, he asks, who inspires them...
Not to have this greed? The Spirit. Or rather, forgive me, “because of the promise of the Spirit”—because of the promise of the Holy Spirit. And it truly is a promise. Listen to what Christ says: whoever has left his house—in this particular calling—his wife, not through divorce, his children, or his fields for My name’s sake, as His disciples did, will receive in this present life—and the Lord repeats the list, apart from the wife, speaking again of fields, children, and houses—a hundredfold.
And eternal life. This is the promise. Truly, my beloved, I tell you, it is more certain than certainty itself: the person who leaves his own possessions truly receives a hundredfold. You left your house; every house is open to welcome you. You left your fields; the produce of many fields comes to you in abundance. And I need not say more. What I mean is that what the Spirit of God has promised is true. It is true. The Apostle Peter says, “We have left everything for You. What, then, will become of us?” And it was then that the Lord spoke these words: they would receive a hundredfold, and eternal life as well.
The one who remains without possessions, but does so for the name of Christ—pay close attention to this, especially in connection with the other two things I mentioned—truly lives within God’s providence and will never, ever go hungry. Even if he should go a little hungry, it will be a trial permitted by God, because God wishes to grant him other things—not material things now, but spiritual things, things of still greater spiritual worth. What I want to tell you is that God fulfills what He promises. And so it says here, “Christians live without possessions because of the promise of the Spirit,” because of the promise of the Holy Spirit. “Precious indeed is the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the Good Spirit.”
“Rightly, then, are we baptized into the Father and into the Son and into the Holy Spirit.” Thus, he says, the Holy Spirit is truly precious; the Holy Spirit is good; and it is altogether fitting that we are baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. “A man, while still clothed in a body, wrestles against many most savage demons. And often a demon that had already broken its bonds and could not be restrained by many was subdued by that man through words of prayer, because of the power of the Holy Spirit within him. Even the simple breath of the one performing the exorcism becomes fire to the unseen spirit.” That is to say...
While still in this present life, still clothed in a body, a person goes forth to wrestle against the fiercest demons and defeats them. Why? Because the demon that could break the bonds—the iron chains—of those possessed by demons is now restrained by this man through words of prayer. It is captured because of the power of the Holy Spirit within the prayer. The devil comes...
Remember those possessed by demons, especially those in the Gospel. The devil comes to fight you. “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Holy Spirit, save me.” And you escape everything the devil comes to do to you. Through what? Through a single prayer, because you asked, and the Spirit of God is present. He comes not only to help you and set you free, but even to enable you to bind the devil. I remind you of the icon of Saint Marina holding the devil by the horns. Saint Marina was only a young girl. Do you know how old she was? She was fifteen when she was martyred, and she is shown holding the devil by the horns.
A fifteen-year-old girl today, when demons assail her and entice her into sinful romantic relationships and the like, could say, “Lord Jesus, save me,” when temptations come. Compare this with Saint Justina, whose feast we celebrated yesterday. How did she overcome the sorceries of the man who later became Saint Cyprian? By the power of the Holy Spirit. What girl today, then, could hold the devil by the horns? If there are girls who remain chaste and pure, let them be certain of this: they are holding the devil by the horns. “And the simple breath,” he says, “of the one performing the exorcism becomes fire to the unseen spirit.” Who is the one performing the exorcism?
Before a priest performs a Baptism, he takes the person who is to be baptized—or the infant—to the western end of the church and reads the exorcisms over him. And what does he do then? With nothing more, he says, than a simple breath. You will have seen how the priest blows with his mouth in the form of a cross, doing this three times. The simple breath of the exorcist—the priest reading these prayers—becomes fire to the one who cannot be seen, that is, to the devil, and it burns him. Yes!
If you wish, we have many clear examples of this among people who visit various shrines. I remind you of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Corfu, where we have Saint Gerasimos, Saint Spyridon, and Saint Dionysios. When people possessed by demons go there, into the Church, or to Saint Nektarios and other saints, do you know what the demons cry out? “You are burning me! You are burning me!” These words come from the mouth of the possessed person: “You are burning me!” How does it burn? Of course, this is beyond our comprehension, but I will explain how it burns. It is the divine uncreated energy of God.
It is the glory of God, which the Saints possess and which remains even in their relics—do not forget this. When someone is brought to them, the divine uncreated energy abiding in the relics of the Saints—and this is why we venerate holy relics and why holy relics work miracles—becomes light for the faithful. The divine uncreated energy of the light of divine glory becomes light for the faithful; it is the light of the Kingdom of God. But for the impious and for the demons, it becomes fire.
Saint Basil the Great gives a beautiful example in his Hexaemeron. I have told you this again and again, but never mind. Just as sunlight, he says, has a twofold operation—it gives light and it burns—so too the divine uncreated energy of God, divine glory itself, that is, the light of the Transfiguration, illumines the faithful. Then the faithful person can say what the Apostle Peter said: “It is good for us to be here.” But it burns the impious; it scorches them, truly burns them. This is why the demons cry out, “You are burning me! You are burning me!” It is very common, and I believe you have heard of it many times.
The fire of Hell—do you hear? This is the fire of Hell. It is what the Lord presents as the Gehenna of fire, and what the Apocalypse presents as the lake burning with fire and brimstone. This is what it is: the fiery, burning power of divine glory. Once, someone received Holy Communion when he should not have. His spiritual father had told him, “You are not to receive Holy Communion.” But as soon as he received Holy Communion, its light became fire. We say this in the prayers. Read the prayers before receiving of the Holy Gifts and you will see it: “Let not Your Body become fire to me,” it says, but rather, “let it become light.” As soon as he stepped away from the Holy Chalice...
He fell down and cried out, “I am burning! I am burning!” From time to time, God permits such incidents to occur openly so that they may give us a glimpse of these realities. Let us continue. “We have from God a mighty ally and protector, a great teacher of the Church, and a great defender on our behalf. Let us not fear the demons or the devil.” From God, then, we have this mighty Ally. Who is He? The Holy Spirit. We have this great Protector. Who is He? The Holy Spirit. We have this great Teacher. Christ said—Christ said...
“The Paraclete will do two things: He will remind you of what I have told you, and He will teach you what I have not told you.” I want to dwell on this point; pay attention: “He will teach you what I have not told you.” Therefore, we cannot say that only Holy Scripture contains the word of Christ. The Saints of the Church also possess the word of Christ, because the Holy Spirit taught them things that are not written in Holy Scripture. Where, then, are the Protestants who say, “I will accept nothing that is not written in Scripture”? Where are they? “And the things I did not teach you,” because...
“I still have many things to tell you,” says the Lord, “but you cannot bear them now.” You cannot carry them yet. What could I tell you first? What are you able to bear? Neither your heart nor your mind could bear it. The Holy Spirit will come, and He will teach you these things. What is the distinction? Clearly, what He teaches will accord with the spirit of Holy Scripture. Therefore, when we hear the teaching of the Fathers, which is the teaching of the Church and accords with the spirit of Holy Scripture, let us not speak in a thoroughly Protestant manner: “Where is that written? Where did you get the idea of fasting on Wednesday and Friday? Is that written in Holy Scripture?” And yet the Lord Himself said this.
The Didache, the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, dates from very near the time of the Gospels, only a few years later, and echoes the teaching of the Lord. So do not say, “It is not written in Holy Scripture,” and then despise the Wednesday and Friday fast. This is in accord with the spirit of the Gospel. What did Christ say? The Pharisees fast on Monday and Thursday. And He said, “Unless your righteousness”—that is, your holiness—“exceeds that of the Pharisees, you will not enter the Kingdom of God.” Thus He implies fasting. Do you see? Did the Lord not establish it? Therefore, the teaching that we are to fast on Wednesday and Friday may...
Not be explicitly recorded in Holy Scripture, but it is the teaching of the Holy Spirit. And quite possibly, the particular example I have given you is the teaching of Christ Himself. I told you about this book that has survived and was rediscovered in the last century. It was the greatest discovery of that century in this field. The entire book, the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, is only two or three small leaves long. What, then, are you saying, my brother, when you ask, “And where is it written?” For when we submit ourselves in discipline and obedience to the Church, we submit ourselves in discipline and obedience to the Holy Spirit.
“Let us not fear the demons,” he says, “nor the devil.” We have a great defender. “For greater is He who fights on our behalf.” The One who fights for us is greater than all who oppose us. “Only let us open the doors to Him.” We need only open the doors to Him. “For He goes about seeking those who are worthy, looking for someone upon whom He may bestow His gifts.” The Holy Spirit, then, seeks to find those who are worthy, so that He may give them His gifts. May it be so, my beloved...

πούλησαν και αυτοί ένα χωράφι και έφεραν τα χρήματα εις τους Αποστόλους. Δεν έφεραν όμως όλα τα χρήματα. Έκαναν μία ανίερη συμφωνία μεταξύ τους, το ζεύγος, να δώσουν λίγα, να κρατήσουν πολλά και να τρώνε κάπως ελεύθερα στα κοινά τραπέζια και επιπλέον να έχουν και το καλό το όνομα ότι στάθηκαν ευεργέτες. Φυσικά δικαίωμά τους ήταν, όπως τους είπε ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, να πουλήσουν ή να μην πουλήσουν κι, αν πουλούσαν, τα χρήματα να μείνουν εις την δικαιοδοσία των. Η όλη πονηρία ήταν να χρησιμοποιήσουν αυτό το ψέμα. Και λέει τώρα εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλος: όταν ήρθε ο Ανανίας και είπε ότι έφερα αυτά τα χρήματα από την πώληση του χωραφιού και στην συμφωνία του με τη σύζυγό του, ήτο παρών ο Πέτρος;
Όχι.
Ωραίες οικοδομές, είχε ωραίες αγορές, είχε στολίδια η πόλις. Αλλά εκείνος την έβλεπε. Πώς την έβλεπε; Σαν μια σκηνή, σαν μια σκηνή. Αν το θέλετε για την ακρίβεια, σαν μια... πώς τα λέμε αυτά στα χωράφια, που κάνουμε κάτι καλύβες χορταρένιες;
Κοπέλα σήμερα, δεκαπέντε χρονών, που οι δαίμονες επιτίθενται για να συνάψει σχέσεις ερωτικές, αμαρτωλές και λοιπά, θα μπορούσε να πει: «Κύριε Ιησού, σώσε με», όταν έρχονται οι πειρασμοί. Παραβάλετε την Αγία Ιουστίνα που γιορτάζαμε εχθές. Πώς ενίκησε τις μαγείες του κατόπιν Αγίου Κυπριανού; Με τη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ποια λοιπόν κοπέλα σήμερα θα μπορούσε να κρατάει από τα κέρατα τον διάβολο; Αλλά αν υπάρχουν κοπέλες που μένουν στην αγνότητα και στην καθαρότητα, να είναι σίγουρες: κρατούν τον διάβολο από τα κέρατα, να είναι σίγουρες. «Καὶ τὸ ἁπλοῦν», λέγει, «ἐμφύσημα τοῦ ἐπορκίζοντος πῦρ γίνεται τῷ μὴ φαινομένῳ». Ποιος είναι ο επορκίζων;
