Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem distinguishes the many meanings of “spirit” and contrasts demonic activity with the presence of the Holy Spirit. Humility, obedience to Scripture, the Church Fathers, and one’s spiritual father protect Christians from the devil’s snares. The Holy Spirit’s action is described as a spiritual fragrance associated with Christ, holiness, and the sanctified relics of the saints.

We continue, my beloved, with Saint Cyril of Jerusalem and his Sixteenth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns the Holy Spirit. We are at paragraph fifteen, where Saint Cyril explains how the devil appears. He too is called a spirit, for, after presenting us with a series of meanings, Saint Cyril has shown us that the word “spirit” has many senses. The wind is called spirit; so are the soul, the devil, and teaching; and, above all, the...

Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril says, “I am making this distinction and clarification so that you will not confuse them.” Since he has mentioned the word “spirit,” he wishes to give us a standard by which to discern how the spirit of evil appears and how the Holy Spirit appears, each with its own signs and characteristics. So he first describes the presence of Satan, the demon, within a human being. We have already said a few things about this. We said that his presence is exceedingly savage and the sensation exceedingly oppressive, as Saint Cyril puts it. We have already examined this oppressive sensation, so I shall say only a few words: it is the feeling experienced by a person...

who is subject to the presence of Satan. When we speak of Satan’s presence—when the devil has settled, so to speak, within a person’s being, body, or soul—the person feels as though he has been stolen and taken over by someone else. In fact, we shall come to this idea of being “stolen” a little further on—indeed, immediately below. It is as though I say, “You stole me, and when I was set free, I felt different.” This is an exceedingly dreadful thing. But let me clarify one small matter that happens to very many people, who often think they are demon-possessed. As a general rule, I would like to tell you: do not...

call every little thing demonic. Do not reach that conclusion so readily. We often become prejudiced by this thought beforehand, and then we feel terribly distressed. Many people tell me, “But I am demon-possessed.” Of course people can become demon-possessed; that is a fact. But we cannot label every case and every symptom as demonic. What case do I have in mind? There may be others, but I shall mention the most common one. While asleep, a person may feel extremely heavy and unable to move. People commonly describe it to me by saying, “A shadow pressed down on me.” Sometimes, although I know what they mean, I deliberately ask them...

“What do you mean, a shadow pressed down on you? A shadow cannot press on anyone. Does a shadow have weight?” I say this deliberately. “Well, no,” they reply, “it was the devil.” I would like to tell you that this is not the devil. Very often it is either a condition related to pressure on the heart or something involving the autonomic nervous system. Those qualified to explain it could tell you much more. If you ask a doctor, he will give you a fuller explanation. It is not something demonic. Someone says, “I tried to raise my hand, but I could not.” Do we not have dreams in which we want to run but cannot? Or we want to defend ourselves but cannot, and so forth? All these are conditions, we might say, arising from within the human person. I mean...

that they arise within the whole person. I do not say merely within the soul, because the soul affects the body and the body affects the soul. If you are in pain or have a fever, for example, you may have dreams that never seem to end. It is as though the needle on a gramophone record has become stuck and keeps playing the same thing. This does not mean that it is demonic. You are simply ill and have a fever, and so forth. Therefore, I beg you, do not become alarmed so easily. Do not be alarmed. But when this exceedingly oppressive sensation is truly caused by a demon—may God have mercy and preserve us! There is nothing like it. And now we continue with our subject. “The understanding becomes darkened.” The understanding, he says, becomes darkened.

It is plunged into darkness—that is, it sees nothing, perceives nothing, and understands nothing. When I say that it “perceives nothing,” it does retain an awareness of itself and of its condition, in that sense, but it cannot see anything beyond that. The opposite is clarity of soul, clarity of the nous, the spiritual intellect, by which one sees distinctly. We might compare it to a landscape covered in fog, where you can see nothing. When the fog clears, you can see far into the distance and discern clearly what is there. This is what the human soul is like when it receives demons. This condition, of course, is not always continuous; it occurs periodically.

It happens at a particular moment. And here again I must say: I do not mean the condition caused by a headache. When we have a headache, we also experience a certain dullness and darkness. When there is an organic, bodily cause, there is a corresponding darkening. Pay attention. Saint Isaac the Syrian says, “If your nous is darkened, I give you this counsel”—he is addressing monks—“wrap yourself in your pallion and go to sleep.” How important this is! The pallion was a kind of garment or robe.

They say it was somewhat like a cassock. At the same time, because monks did not possess many things—as we do today, but never mind—it also served as their blanket, mattress, and everything else. It even served as a pillow. The monk would wrap himself in this pallion and sleep. So if your nous is darkened, this is what Saint Isaac advises you to do. It is very wise. When something has disturbed us, when our mind cannot clear itself of the fog caused by events and circumstances, when we are tired or suffering from anything else, or when we must make decisions but should not make them because we cannot see clearly or assess things properly, then we need only sleep, and this darkening will pass. Such darkness is not demonic. We might say it is produced by the soul or by the body.

I am tired, or events have worn me down, and now my mind has become clouded. It cannot take in anything; it cannot even pray. “Go,” Saint Isaac says, “sleep, and arise fresh and restored.” If it were caused by a demon, it would not be like this. Please keep this distinction in mind, so that we do not regard everything as demonic. “And the assault is unjust.” The demon’s assault upon a human being is unjust. We shall see why. “And it is the seizure of another’s possession.” It is the seizure of property belonging to another. I, a human being, belong to God; moreover, I have been baptized and am God’s possession. This is why Satan’s seizure is unjust, and why I am...

another’s possession: because I belong to Christ. The devil had once seized humanity before Baptism. The whole human race was under demonic dominion. Now, through Baptism, we have driven the devil away. Do we not perform the exorcisms there at the entrance of the church? We command the devil lurking within the person to depart. But now the demon returns with even greater brazenness to seize a possession that belongs to another. Even the first time, the person did not belong to him; he had merely taken him captive. The human person belongs to God, and therefore the demon is said to seize another’s possession. “For he uses another’s body as though it were his own, and violently takes possession of another’s instrument.” That is, Saint Cyril says, the devil makes use...

of someone else’s body as though it were his own, and makes another’s instrument his own. Let me say something about this. How does a person become an instrument of the devil? At the furthest extreme, Judas became an instrument of the devil. But he became the devil’s instrument in his nous, in his thinking, and in his heart. A person may also become an instrument of the devil when the devil uses that person to do evil to someone else. Let me go directly to an extreme example, so as not to delay. Here is a concrete case.

Suppose a man is reading Holy Scripture, and a woman throws herself upon him to strangle him because he is reading Holy Scripture. To “strangle him” means to kill him, to do away with him. This woman has a demon, because she has become Satan’s murderous instrument. Or suppose someone is driving a car, and the devil impels him to kill someone standing on the pavement who is a holy man. Do you understand? The person on the pavement may be a holy man, while some random driver...

has no relationship with God. The devil may impel that driver—I do not know exactly what he might do to him—so that the car strikes the man and kills him. I have given you two or three very clear examples. There is a vast range, an exceedingly vast range, of ways in which the devil sometimes drives people toward evil—even toward suicide. This is extremely common, extremely common: the devil drives a person toward suicide. Let me remind you of yesterday’s—no, the day before yesterday’s—forgive me, what day is it? Monday. Let me remind you of yesterday’s Gospel... Forgive me, I mean the Gospel reading from last Sunday, about that demon-possessed child whose father...

tells the Lord that the demon often throws the child now into the fire and now into the water, in order to destroy him. You see? The demon drives the person; it seizes him and leads him to destruction, because the devil desires the destruction of the human person at all costs. Remember that he seeks not only to destroy the person himself, but also to use that person as an instrument to destroy someone else, who may indeed be good. This is not hard to imagine. In the case of the Lord Himself, the rulers became instruments of Satan. “Because of envy they delivered Him up,” says the Evangelist. Having become instruments of Satan, they crucified...

the Lord. Whom did the devil regard with envy and hostility? The Lord, his great adversary. “Very well, then, I shall crucify You. I shall use these men as my instruments, and they will hang You upon the Cross.” Do you see? “He casts down the one who stands, for this is the work of him who himself fell from heaven.” The devil brings down the one who stands firm. He knows this from his own experience, for he himself fell from heaven. My beloved, this is why, especially in the last days, the Lord says that the devil will deceive, if possible, even the elect. These are the great falls. Or, as the Prophet Daniel says—or rather, as the Evangelist John says—the dragon raised his tail into heaven and cast down one-third of the stars. The stars symbolize eminent people, especially those of great spiritual stature or, if you prefer, prominent persons within the Church. Now listen carefully to what I have told you. Study this at home; I shall say no more about it. I mean ecclesiastical persons in high positions. They are stars. They are stars. Would you like to see this? In the Apocalypse, does not Christ hold the seven stars? What are the seven stars? They are the seven churches, the seven bishops of the seven churches. And the dragon, it says, raised his tail and cast down the stars—one-third of them.

This means that the devil will bring down many who hold high positions. Therefore, exceedingly great care is needed. Do you know when we shall not fall? When we have humility. Let me tell you that oft-repeated story of Saint Anthony the Great, which all of you know. But I shall tell it for the sake of even one person who may not know it. The rest of you all know the story, but I shall repeat it for that one person. Once, in a vision, Saint Anthony saw the whole earth covered with snares. He groaned and said, “Alas, who can be saved?” Then he heard a voice from heaven: “The humble-minded person.” Must I translate that for you? It means that only such a person can be saved.

The earth truly is always covered with snares. Who, then, is saved? The humble-minded person. Suppose, for example, I say to a young person, “My child, take care not to associate with that friend of yours, because you will be harmed.” Even if the young person does not fully understand—for how could a child know?—he says, “Since my spiritual father told me, I shall obey.” Humbling myself does not mean that I do something only after I understand it. There are very many things we do not understand. We should say, “God says it. My spiritual father told me. God tells me in Holy Scripture. Holy Scripture says it. My spiritual father tells me; my spiritual father told me. I shall take heed.” My children, this—this is what shows...

humility. You should say, “Holy Scripture says it; the Fathers of our Church explain it; my spiritual father told me.” If you follow this course, I tell you truly that you will preserve humility and suffer no evil—by which I mean moral evil. For when the devil sees that he cannot bring you down through moral evil, he sets other things against you. He may cause you to be dismissed from your work. He may bring an illness upon you. He may do I know not what. Let us not be afraid. Let us not be afraid. The devil is ridiculous. He is ridiculous. And since the occasion has arisen...

let me tell you something from the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, since I used the word “ridiculous.” Two demons, it says, were holding a thread with a tiny speck of rubbish—a little leaf—which they kept spinning around. The demons themselves were invisible. They did this before the eyes of an ascetic to make him laugh, because he never laughed. Now do not ask me why he did not laugh; that is another matter. Nor should we enter into whether laughter is a sin; that too is another matter. Simply take the example by itself. At one point the ascetic laughed. Then the demons were heard saying, “We made you laugh.” “No,” he replied, “that is not why I laughed. I am laughing at you, because you occupy yourselves with ridiculous things.” So then.

“It turns the tongue aside.” Listen: it turns the tongue aside. This means that it causes the tongue to deviate. There can also be a physical aspect to this. I know that he will mention further on that it can be physical. So there is both a physical and a moral aspect. Physically, the tongue becomes thick in many people who are demonically possessed. Have you ever heard of this? You may not be able to imagine what it means for the tongue to become thick. Doctors will certainly know. A person may have the sensation, “Hasn’t my tongue sometimes felt thick?” Be careful: it is not always caused by the devil. It is not always caused by the devil—I want to emphasize that here as well. Sometimes it is purely physical and nothing more. And so the tongue...

really does become thick—a doctor could explain this to you; I do not know the details—or it gives the sensation that it has become thick. People who undergo great fear, some shock, or deep anguish may be unable to speak; something happens to us. In any case, I have often heard the expression, “My tongue became thick.” Thus, alongside the physical case, which is simply physical, there is also the demonic case. But the deviation—the turning aside of the tongue, as it is called here—has a moral character when the tongue goes astray and says strange, disturbing, and dreadful things. A blasphemer is no different from a demonically possessed person. Nor is there any difference between a demonically possessed person and...

someone who utters the most indecent, obscene, and wretched words—words that would make even monkeys blush. My dear friends, this is a deviation of the tongue brought about by the devil. He prompts you to say such things. The tongue strays from its proper path and, instead of speaking about God and glorifying God, says things like these. He then tells us, “It distorts the lips.” It twists and contorts the lips. Here too, we must say that there may be a physical cause. Someone may stand in a draft. Suppose I stood in a draft and came here today with my mouth twisted. Would that mean the devil had twisted it? No; I simply sat in a draft, and my mouth became twisted.

There are quite a few people whose mouth or tongue becomes distorted—the lips, forgive me, the lips. But there is also the demonic case. And then comes the very striking phrase: “Foam instead of words.” Instead of words and speech coming from a person’s mouth, foam comes out. Here too we must say that a person having an epileptic seizure may also foam at the mouth. I think we resolved this question some time ago, when it was raised. A person with epilepsy is not demonically possessed. Pay close attention to this point. It is probably caused by some impairment in the brain, as far as I understand. Probably—I do not know. But demonic influence is something different.

As I have said, a demonically possessed person behaves very, very differently from someone who is ill. Very differently. At times he knows things and says things that are beyond what is natural. That is a demonically possessed person. At every step I have drawn this distinction so that you do not leave here and declare everyone demonically possessed—everyone outside, or everyone present and listening. That would be dreadful. This is why I have made these distinctions. I trust you understand. “The person is darkened”—we spoke about this earlier. He is plunged into darkness. “The eye is wronged, and through it the soul does not see.” His eyes are open, but he does not see.

It is not that he is blind.

For example—and pay attention, because here too I will make the distinction—someone may suffer a stroke. He looks at you; he looks at you, yet he does not see you. The person has suffered an injury. That stroke does not mean that he is demonically possessed. And I fear, my dear friends, that all of us will die of strokes. I fear it very much. What happened to this man? A stroke. And the next? A stroke. Good heavens, what a dreadful thing. Everyone is dying from strokes and heart disease. Strokes especially are the scourge of our time. Are all these people demonically possessed? God forbid. A person may look at you without seeing you. As we say, “He has lost awareness of his surroundings.” He is not demonically possessed. Yet there is also the demonic case in which...

a person loses awareness of his surroundings and sees nothing. When he is demonically possessed—especially in clear cases of demonic possession—“the wretched man convulses fearfully before his death.” He convulses and thrashes about, the poor man, before he dies. To illustrate this convulsing, rather than tell you some modern story, I will mention an account I read elsewhere about the death of Voltaire. Voltaire, the well-known French writer of the eighteenth century, if I remember correctly, was a contemporary of our own Eugenios Voulgaris.

He was the man who mocked the faith and had a talent for writing derisively against the faith and the Church. Together with many others, he thoroughly poisoned Europe, leaving Europe as it is today—a poisoned Europe. Yet, from the spiritual point of view, when he was dying, they called a priest to see him and hear his confession, evidently a Roman Catholic priest, and so on. Then it began... This priest saw what happened and later bore witness to it. Voltaire would not even receive the priest, and in the end he was not saved. The priest tried to help him but could not.

The priest said that anyone who had witnessed Voltaire’s death would never again claim not to believe in demons. It was a dreadful thing. Voltaire was trembling all over, he said. He saw demons climbing onto his bed. He himself saw them—Voltaire saw them. He hid his head beneath the blankets, crying, “Go away! Go away!” The wretched Voltaire trembled and tried to hide. This is a dreadful thing, my dear friends. I have told you this before, but I will tell it again for the sake of even one soul, since the rest of you may have heard it some time ago. There was once, tragically, a certain person—an elderly woman...

She died in the hospital. No, she died... In any event, she became ill and eventually died here in the hospital. I will not identify her, of course, even though nearly twenty-five years have passed—a great many years. I will say nothing more about her, only what happened in the end. Her health was failing, but her mind was razor-sharp. Her condition was not exactly an illness; something happened so unexpectedly that no one could have imagined she would end up in the hospital—some kind of injury. In any case, her mind remained razor-sharp. Yet her condition quickly led to death. This woman saw...

While alone in a little room—one of those isolation rooms in the old wing of the hospital—she saw flames rising from her bed and surrounding her. She was so terrified that she would turn toward the wall. I will not explain why or how; I will only say that this continued until she died. I am sorry that I could not help her, despite my persistent efforts. She could not help herself. She could not. I will not tell you why or how, but only the fact itself: she saw flames and was terrified. We might call it a foretaste of Hell. It is a dreadful thing. This is why I have told you about those who are able to see such things...

Other people now tell me, “May God preserve us.” In any event, I offer this to you as a genuine and true testimony. I alone heard it directly from the woman herself, as she told me about it in terror. In terror. I heard it with my own ears, and I relate it to you exactly as she told it. I am simply not telling you what I said to her, because that is unnecessary. Demons are truly the enemies of mankind: hostile, secretive, and merciless. They truly are the enemies of the human person, acting against people with hostility and without mercy. “Mercilessly” means without pity, without compassion.

They seek to destroy God’s creature, the human person. Their envy cannot be healed, nor will it ever change in the demons. This is why the devil drove our first parents out of Paradise: because of envy. You see, the Wisdom of Solomon—the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon—speaks of envy. It says, “Through envy death entered the world.” Forgive me, forgive me: “Through the envy of the devil death entered the world.” And through the envy of the devil—and, of course, through his instruments—they hung Christ upon the Cross. This is the devil, the murderer of mankind from the beginning, as the Lord says. You see!

He has been so from the beginning. Here, “from the beginning” means that he lay in wait for our first parents. “But the Holy Spirit is not like this.” We are entering the sixteenth paragraph. The Holy Spirit is not like this—God forbid! On the contrary, everything He does is directed toward what is good and saving: always toward the good, always toward something that brings salvation. “First of all, His presence is gentle.” When the Holy Spirit comes to a person, His presence is gentle from the very beginning. He does not create that savagery. The eyes do not become wild, the face does not become fierce, and the person is not disfigured.

You know that there is a transformation wrought by God, and there is also a transformation wrought by the demon. The demonic transformation is utterly horrifying. Have you ever seen people whose faces have undergone a demonic transformation? It is dreadful. Once I saw a man who had become enraged. We use the expression, “His eyes were gleaming.” Of course, the eye has a smooth surface, so it reflects light. But that particular gleam... This man was filled with terrible hatred. At that moment, it was something altogether different. So many years have passed, yet I still remember that man. An eye filled with envy or hatred gleams differently. Have you ever noticed this? If you sometimes look over an audience, or at...

people gathered in company, you may be able to perceive what a person carries within himself and what he is feeling. A man from our village, or at least I believe he was, once told this story. A murder was committed here in the city, and the suspected murderer had gone to buy a knife. I will say no more, because these things are dreadful. When he entered the shop, the shopkeeper...

well... realized that something was not right with him. Haven’t we all gone into a shop to buy a knife? Yet the shopkeeper sensed that something was wrong. The man who later told us the story was standing beside him. He said, “I assure you that neither the shopkeeper nor I were especially spiritual men or possessed any spiritual gift that would enable us to discern this.” What, then, did they notice? The gleam in his eyes.

His eyes, he said, had a different kind of gleam. I believe you understand what I mean. My dear friends, it is a dreadful thing. Indeed.

Whew. The presence of the Holy Spirit is gentle. It is not demonic; it does not distort a person’s appearance. It is gentle. What does “gentle” mean? You see someone who has been transformed by the Spirit of God, and his face makes you sense something truly beautiful within him. This is the transformation wrought by the Holy Spirit. That is what it means for His presence to be gentle. “The perception of Him is fragrant.” As for this word “fragrant,” what can I say? What can I say?

Sometimes it is perceptible to the senses, and sometimes it is not. It is also metaphorical. As you know, Christ is called the Myron, the fragrant ointment. We find this in the Old Testament, and also in the New Testament. Let me explain how. In the Old Testament, one of the names of Christ is Myron—that is, perfume. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul puts it this way: “Become the fragrance of Christ—the fragrance of Christ, the fragrant aroma of Christ,” or simply, “the fragrance of Christ”—the scent of Christ. Do you see? Christ, then, is fragrance, but the Holy Spirit is also fragrance. As I told you, this is also metaphorical...

And it can also be perceptible to the senses. We say that the relics have a fragrance, that they give off a sweet aroma. But the relics are material signs of the presence of the Holy Spirit. So, up to this point, we can understand this sense of spiritual fragrance. Of course, when we came home from school, our mother used to tell us that we smelled like school. I have told you this before. That applied only to first grade, not second grade—but today it does not apply even to first grade. Now we have other smells. “My child, my child, how lovely you smell!” “What do I smell like, Mama?” “Why, like school!” I could not understand what ‘school’ smelled like.

For a long time I wondered what kind of smell that could be. My dear friends, this talk of a smell—well, parents use it to win their little ones over, to show how happy a mother is that her child has gone to school, especially if the child is difficult and does not want to go. These are all little tricks mothers use, and they are very clever and very lovely; we recommend them. But here the meaning is figurative: we say that this person has a beautiful fragrance. It refers to his way of life; he is a moral person. And what do we say about someone who is immoral? He stinks. In reality, he does not smell bad at all. In fact, he may even use scented creams and smell perfectly pleasant. Yet we say that he stinks. This is the figurative meaning of fragrance and stench.

The spiritual person bears the fragrance of the Holy Spirit; his presence gives off a fragrance, sometimes figuratively and sometimes literally. “The lightest of burdens.” Here, “lightest” means that the burden is exceedingly light. He comes—He comes to lay something upon you—but it is so light. This is what Christ said: His burden is light and His yoke is good—that is, useful and beneficial. So here we can see how very different the Spirit of God is. “Before His presence, rays of light and knowledge shine forth.” They come first—and this is the uncreated light—rays of light, rays of uncreated light.

Knowledge. A person enters another realm when he is able to experience this uncreated light, whether inwardly or outwardly—and it may be experienced in both ways—as the herald of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Saint Symeon the New Theologian lived continually in this light. “He comes with the tender compassion of a true guardian.” He comes with the compassion of a genuine guardian. A guardian is one who cares for and watches over someone; he comes to care for the human person with sincere compassion—that is, with genuine love. “For He comes to save,” “to heal,” because He comes to save and to heal; “to teach”; “to admonish”; “to strengthen”; “to comfort”—and for this reason He is also called the Paraclete, the Comforter; “to illumine”—first to illumine the understanding of the one who receives Him, and then, through that person, to illumine others as well. First He illumines the person whom He visits, and afterward, through him, He illumines others. This is why Saint Gregory the Theologian uttered those famous words: “First be illumined, and then illumine others.”

Can you illumine others if you yourself have not been illumined? You cannot impart the Spirit of God—you cannot give or reveal the Spirit of God—unless you possess the Spirit of God yourself, and so on. “And just as someone who was formerly in darkness...” Forgive me. “And just as someone who was formerly in darkness and then suddenly sees the sun, so that his bodily sight is illumined and he clearly sees what he could not see before, so also the one who has been counted worthy of the Holy Spirit is illumined in soul and beholds things beyond human capacity, things he did not know.” The body and the soul reflect the heavens. It is like someone, he says, who has been put somewhere in darkness; then, at some point, a light is switched on, and he sees what he could not see in the darkness.

So it is with the person who is illumined by the Spirit of God: he sees things that he could never otherwise have seen. And what are these things? They are all the great works of the Holy Spirit. And, if I may say so, he even sees the things of the visible world differently. Yes, the person who has the Spirit of God sees visible things differently. Let me give you an example. I believe that, if not all of you, at least quite a few of you will have experienced what I am about to describe. As you know, we do not love everyone. Isn’t that so? Many people leave us indifferent; we take no interest in them, either because we do not know them, because they have done us some harm, or because the next day they do not even speak to us...

What else can I say? As I told you, there are many different instances. There are moments when the grace of love falls like rain into the human soul. Then a person feels that he loves greatly—very, very greatly. He loves people, birds, ants, plants, the stars, the sea, stones—everything. Saint Isaac the Syrian speaks of this in his Seventy-Second Homily. This is what such a person feels. Saint Isaac says that he even comes to love the demons. In what sense? He pities them. Wretched creatures...

Precisely because you are unrepentant creatures, wretched creatures, because you are unable to love. The demons may laugh when they hear this, but that is precisely why they are such miserable creatures. It is like a miserable person who laughs at you when you tell him you love him. When you tell him that you care about him and he mocks you, is he not miserable? So this love descends upon the human soul like moisture and soaks it through. Then everyone becomes dear to that person, whereas at other times they were not dear to him. What, then, is this? He has not moved to another place; something within him has changed.

The Spirit of God brought him out of darkness and into light. And now, here in the Spirit of God, he loves and he sees. What does he see? What he could not see before. You have heard people say, “But why didn’t I see this before? It is something good. Why couldn’t I see it?” Yet now you see it. Why do you see it now? What has happened? Were your eyes closed? No, they were perfectly fine; they were open. So what changed? Something changed within you. The Spirit of God enables you to see other things—and these other things belong both to the realm of the senses, as I have explained to you, and to the spiritual realm. Allow me to say something about the realm of the senses.

Many times, when we are living at what we might call a high level of virtue and spirituality, we feel a certain shame that we even have reproductive organs. Listen carefully to what I am telling you: such shame does exist. My dear friends, this was the belief of the philosopher Plotinus. And he is to be pitied, because he lived after Christ and yet did not become a Christian. He was a great man, regarded as the saint of philosophy. He used to say that he was ashamed to have a body—not merely because it had the organs I mentioned, but because he had a body at all. He was ashamed of himself. Christ was crucified on the Cross completely naked.

Did He show anywhere that He was ashamed? Nowhere. You may say, “Was this something He wanted?” No, He did not want it; that was what they did to every condemned criminal. So then, my dear friends, take care. In our natural desire to say that we are not ashamed, we must not slip into shamelessness—God forbid. Be careful, because nudism is an entirely different matter—God forbid! God made clothing for us, and nudism is a grave sin; I want to underline that. Yet through the Spirit of God, a person acquires such simplicity that, if he happens to see another person naked—not that he deliberately keeps looking at him naked, peering at someone through a keyhole or a half-closed window, as some people even climb up to do—

To see what someone else is doing in his bedroom or from his balcony, or whatever—to stir up... to go and see what another person is doing in his bedroom. Not in that sense, but in the sense that, if for a moment I happen to see others naked, I am not disturbed in any way, because I see them with complete naturalness. This is what Holy Scripture means when it says that the first-created human beings were naked and were not ashamed, and then goes on to say that they became ashamed because they had sinned—not sexually, but by transgressing God’s commandment. This is what it seeks to show: that natural things, as God created them, are seen for what they are by a person who has the Spirit of God...

They are simply and truly works of Divine Wisdom. Yet some people who would like to claim a certain spirituality—though I fear it is not entirely genuine, or at least that they still have much room to grow in it—go so far as to ask: Why did God make things this way? Why did God institute marriage? Why do animals mate? My dear friends, because our eyes are not sound, we look upon these things in a sinful way. God’s works are not sinful; it is our eyes that interpret them that way. But once our eyes enter into the light of the Holy Spirit...

Does this mean that our nature changes? No, our nature does not change. Rather, there is no longer any trace of evil. And to show you this, in the Kingdom of God we will not have clothes. Our bodies—these very bodies—will indeed be raised, but we will not wear clothes. Quite simply, clothing is a form that belongs to life after the Fall, and nothing belonging to the fallen state has any place in the Kingdom of God. The garment we will wear will be divine glory. And let me ask you something else: what clothes did Christ wear after His Resurrection? His garments had been divided among the soldiers at the Cross, while His burial cloths were found in the tomb. You may say to me, “Would it be difficult for God to provide clothes?” But would Christ have any need to wear them?

Was He wearing clothes? To human eyes, He appeared to be. The Fathers of our Church, in their interpretation, say that Christ was not wearing clothes. But the people with whom He would speak for forty days had not yet entered that other realm; they were still in the old realm. So, by divine condescension, He appeared to those around Him to be clothed. The Lord’s garment was His human nature—the garment that we too shall have in the Kingdom of God, the same garment Adam had, filled with light. Do you see how the Spirit of God changes our eyes? Do you see how the Spirit of God brings you out of darkness, so that you may see in a different way?

This is what John Chrysostom says: “The Holy Spirit is the One who gives us different eyes.” It is the Holy Spirit who gives us these other eyes. And, my beloved, let us persistently ask God to give us these other eyes of the Holy Spirit. My beloved, we have finished. This was our final topic for the year 1987–88.

Thank you.

I return again to the matter of numbers, as you see, and I want to make a special comment: attendance has not merely remained steady; it has actually increased. And we see this remarkable phenomenon: instead of the number falling as we approach the end of the year, it is rising. Just as I praised you yesterday, I also praise those who attend on Mondays, because it is very late to begin listening at such an hour—it is nearly ten thirty. This is no small thing. You are working people who must go to work, yet you begin listening to the word of God so late at night. I sincerely pray that the Lord will grant you every blessing. Do not forget that we need many things from God—many things indeed. But the first thing we need from God is the Holy Spirit. For if we have everything else but do not have the Holy Spirit, we have nothing. If, on the other hand, we have the Spirit of God, even if we have nothing else, then in essence we have everything.

This is what we must ask for: the Spirit of God. That is why the Lord says, “Will not the Father give His Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” He had given that illustration of a father and his child, saying, “What son, what child, would say to his father, ‘Father, give me an egg,’ and receive a scorpion? Or, ‘Father, give me a fish,’ and receive a serpent? If you, then—you earthly people, parents and fathers, though sinful—know how to give good gifts, that is, good things, to your children—their clothes, their education, their food—will not the heavenly Father give His Holy Spirit?”

to those who ask Him? My dear friends, I believe we have understood. Our first and foremost request in our prayers should be: “Our heavenly Father, give us Your good Spirit,” because without Him we cannot live. With Him we have His gifts; with Him we have our life; with Him our eyes are opened. I wish you a blessed Pascha, blessed feast days, and a good summer. May the Lord bless you!

Χου. Η παρουσία του Αγίου Πνεύματος είναι ήμερη. Δεν είναι δαιμονική, που κάνει την όψη αλλιώτικη. Είναι ήμερη. Τι θα πει η ήμερη; Βλέπεις τον άνθρωπο που αλλοιώθηκε από το Πνεύμα του Θεού και έχει ένα πρόσωπο που αισθάνεσαι κάτι πολύ ωραίο στον άνθρωπο αυτό. Είναι η αλλοίωση του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Αυτό θα πει ήμερος παρουσία. «Εὐώδης ἡ ἀντίληψις». Αυτό το «ευώδης», τι να πω, τι να πω;

Να αλλάξει η φύση; Δεν αλλάζει η φύση. Δεν υπάρχει πια ουδεμία πονηρία. Και για να σας το αποδείξω, στη Βασιλεία του Θεού ρούχα δεν θα έχουμε. Θα αναστηθούν μεν τα σώματά μας, αυτά που είναι, αλλά ρούχα δεν θα φοράμε. Γιατί, απλούστατα, τα ρούχα είναι μεταπτωτικόν σχήμα και στη Βασιλεία του Θεού μεταπτωτικά σχήματα δεν χωρούν. Αλλά η στολή που θα φοράμε θα είναι η Θεία Δόξα. Για να μην σας πω και κάτι άλλο: τι ρούχα φορούσε ο Χριστός μετά την Ανάστασή Του; Αφού τα ρούχα του τα μοιράστηκαν οι στρατιώτες επί του Σταυρού, τα δε σάβανα βρέθηκαν εις τον τάφο. Θα μου πείτε, δύσκολο πράγμα στον Θεό είναι να φορέσει ρούχα; Θα 'δει ο Χριστός να φορέσει ρούχα;

Φορούσε ρούχα; Στα μάτια των ανθρώπων εφαίνετο ότι φορούσε ρούχα. Λέγουν οι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας, που ερμηνεύουν: δεν φορούσε ρούχα ο Χριστός. Αλλά επειδή οι άνθρωποι με τους οποίους θα συνδιαλέγεται σαράντα ημέρες δεν ήσαν σε μια άλλη περιοχή πια, ήσαν στην παλιά περιοχή, κατ' οικονομίαν, στα μάτια του περιβάλλοντός του εφαίνετο ότι φορούσε ρούχα. Ο Κύριος είχε την στολή, η ανθρωπίνη φύσις, την στολή που θα έχουμε και εμείς στην Βασιλεία του Θεού, εκείνη που είχε ο Αδάμ, γεμάτη από φως. Βλέπετε πώς αλλάζει το Πνεύμα του Θεού τα μάτια; Βλέπετε πώς το Πνεύμα του Θεού σε βγάζει από το σκότος να δεις αλλιώτικα;
