Summary

Saint Cyril distinguishes the Holy Spirit from the many other meanings of “spirit” found throughout Scripture. The Spirit’s testimony, especially at Pentecost, confirms the truth of Christ’s teaching and safeguards the apostolic proclamation recorded in the Gospels. Scripture qualifies the word “spirit” according to context because it may refer to divine teaching, the human soul, sin, deception, an angel, or an evil spirit.

We are still, my beloved, in Catechesis Sixteen, paragraph fourteen, continuing with what Saint Cyril tells us about the Holy Spirit. You will remember that, as we saw last time, he speaks primarily about the many meanings of the word “spirit.” The word “spirit” can mean many different things. He continues to explain this by bringing examples from Holy Scripture, so that no one will suppose that every time the word “spirit” appears in the text of the New Testament or the Old Testament, it always refers to the Holy Spirit. Let us continue. Paul also said, “Except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and tribulations await me.” For this good Sanctifier, Helper, and Teacher of the Church—the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, of whom the Savior said, “He will teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance,” and so forth... No. Here, as we said a little earlier and discussed last time, the Holy Spirit is a person.

He is not an energy of God, as the millennialists most blasphemously claim and as Macedonius taught in former times. Since, therefore, the Holy Spirit is a person, He sets apart, calls, and sends forth with authority, as Saint Cyril told us last time. That is, He separates. What does He say? “Set apart for Me”—set apart Paul and Barnabas for Me, whom I am calling and sending to Cyprus. You see, Saint Cyril says, that He is a person, because an energy of God does not speak in this way. An energy is not a person. Here, however, He sets apart, calls,

and sends forth with authority. And so the Apostle Paul says here, in the passage Saint Cyril is using, “The Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying...” In every city I visit on my journeys, He testifies to me. What does that mean? He speaks emphatically; He speaks with urgency. Through whom? Through the prophets. Which prophets? The prophetic gift was abundant in the early Christian Church. Take note that the prophetic gift has never disappeared from the Church. It exists and will continue to exist until the Church completes her course. The only difference is that the prophetic gift no longer concerns

Christology in the way that the ancient prophets of the Old Testament did. Their prophecies had one chief characteristic: they concerned Christ, the Messiah. In other words, the prophecies had a Christological character. Of course, the prophets also addressed other matters, but their prophecies were chiefly Christological. The prophets in the Old... In the New Testament, the prophetic gift no longer deals with this, because the Christological question is settled. Pay attention: it is settled. That matter is complete. Christ was prophesied; He came; the matter is fulfilled. There is nothing further to add. And, if you will, Christ Himself also prophesied the end of the world. The disciples, too, writing their accounts in the

Gospels, epistles, and so forth, speak about the end of the world on the basis of what Christ told them and what the Spirit of God revealed concerning it. Therefore, the Christological question is settled. The prophetic gift exists within the Church and serves the Church’s spiritual needs. I would say that even in our own time it is not rare—I will not say abundant, I will not say abundant, but not rare. What, then, does this mean: “The Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying”? It means: wherever I go... Remember Agabus. Agabus was a prophet. He came down and...

indeed, using a symbolic action customary in the Old Testament, he approached Paul, removed Paul’s belt, took it, bound Paul’s hands with it, and bound his feet. Then he took the belt and said, “Thus says the Lord: The man to whom this belt belongs...” Pay attention: this kind of symbolic action was customary in the Old Testament. It was a vivid way of conveying the message. The man is Paul himself, the one now standing before me. When he goes to Jerusalem, tribulations and bonds await him. There, the Christians—and likewise those in Ephesus and elsewhere, to whom Paul had said, “You will see me no more”—

“you will see my face no more”—wept and lamented, begging Paul not to go to Jerusalem. But he said, “Do not hinder me. I am ready in my soul to sacrifice myself for the Lord.” Here, then, we see that the Holy Spirit prophesies through prophets. “For this good Sanctifier, Helper, and Teacher of the Church—the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete,” and so forth. Of course, I am holding something back to tell you a little later, because Saint Cyril will return to it. Do not forget that Saint Cyril delivered these words orally, as the text itself indicates. We might say that while he was speaking, others were writing his words down.

And so they were recorded. We, however, are analyzing his words as we proceed. It is therefore quite natural that I may wish to say something at this point about why the Holy Spirit testified in this way, while Saint Cyril himself will explain it three lines later, very close to the present subject. But I will reach it much later, perhaps not even until next time, simply because I am offering an analysis. This creates what we might call a disadvantage: we cannot retain an overall outline of everything Saint Cyril says at a given point. Do you understand? Now, Saint Cyril calls the Holy Spirit the good what of the Church? Her Sanctifier, Helper, and Teacher. Three descriptions.

He is the Sanctifier, the good Sanctifier of the Church. He is the One who grants sanctification.

Spiritual—pardon me. Spiritual life without the Holy Spirit is like stifado without onions. Then it is no longer stifado. In the same way, spiritual life without the Holy Spirit is not merely impossible; the very idea is absurd and senseless. Yet we are called to live the spiritual life. Who, then, will give us that spiritual life? The Holy Spirit. That, indeed, is why it is called spiritual life: it is the life given by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also the Sanctifier—or, as Saint Cyril says, the good Sanctifier—the Paraclete, and so forth. For whoever lives the life of the Holy Spirit is sanctified. We cannot have sanctification without the Holy Spirit. Therefore, He is the One who sanctifies the faithful. We cannot have sanctification without the Holy Spirit. He is also our Helper. When we pray, “O Heavenly King,” we ask the Holy Spirit to help us. He is the perfect Helper, and because He so wills, the Holy Spirit makes use of people—or of any other way or means He chooses—to help a person. Throughout history, these ways have been...

countless. They are countless. There is no numbering the ways the Holy Spirit finds to help a person find his path. If people sometimes fail to find their path, they must not blame the Holy Spirit. It is because they themselves have an evil disposition and say no. Does not the Apostle Paul say, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption,” and so forth? What does he say? “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” How do I grieve the Holy Spirit? I grieve Him through my evil conduct and my stubbornness. Elsewhere it says...

Indeed, this is a somewhat unusual and difficult passage—difficult and a little strange. It says: Do you not know that we can provoke the Holy Spirit, who yearns jealously and stands as your rival? Let me explain what this means. You know that the Old Testament says God is jealous. The Holy Spirit is God. The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God—one God, because there is one essence, yet three persons. What, then, does “jealous” mean? It means that God made the human person for Himself. But if the human person now leaves God...

and goes after others... You know, God is the Bridegroom and the soul is the bride. If, then, the soul leaves the Bridegroom and turns toward other lovers—and these other lovers are other deities—she arouses the jealousy of what we might call her true Husband, the Bridegroom. This is why the word “jealous” is used: “I am a jealous God,” because you are Mine and cannot give yourself to another. Therefore, when a person gives his heart here and there, he provokes the jealousy of the Holy Spirit. Take care not to understand this literally. Please bear in mind that these are human terms applied to God.

God is not envious—God forbid. Jealousy is a passion. God is not jealous in that sense. The point here is to show that the human person belongs to God. Consequently, if someone persists in refusing to belong to God—because he possesses the freedom to say no even to his Lord and God—then, speaking once again in human terms, we mean that the Holy Spirit is grieved. For the Holy Spirit loves us deeply. The Holy Spirit loves us exceedingly. He is the One who gives us life. Therefore, He comes to help us when we say yes to the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit is also our Teacher. He teaches us. Does He teach us new things or old?

He brings the old things back to our remembrance, while He teaches the new. Saint Cyril expresses it below in this way: “Of whom the Lord said, ‘He will...’” Who is “He”? The Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. “He will teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance.” He will teach you everything and remind you of everything. Remember how, at the Mystical Supper, Christ said, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” You are not yet able to receive the things I have to tell you. Your understanding cannot contain them, nor do you yet have the capacity. When, then, would He tell them these things?

Do you think Christ told them everything and completed all His teaching during the forty days He spent with His disciples after His Resurrection? No! No! Do you hear me? Why do I say, “Do you hear me?” You will see why. No! For He left room, first, for the Holy Spirit to bring His words to remembrance. Why was this remembrance necessary? Saint Cyril gives the following explanation: “He did not say only, ‘He will teach,’ but also, ‘He will bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.’ For the teachings of Christ are not one thing and those of the Holy Spirit another; they are the same.” In other words, the things I have told you are the same as those the Holy Spirit will tell you. He will speak the same things—things, of course, of the

same spirit, as we say, and of the same character. Therefore—therefore, Christ leaves room for the Holy Spirit to bring His teaching to remembrance, so that it may be shown that the Holy Spirit bears witness to Jesus. By acknowledging His teaching—pay attention to this point—the Holy Spirit confirms the teaching of Jesus. Therefore, Jesus was not worthy of execution or of Hell, as the Jews claimed when they had Him crucified as a deceiver and a corrupt man who had come to lead the people astray and usurp divine authority. “He made Himself the Son of God,” they told Pilate. Do you see? Christ said that the Holy Spirit would testify concerning Him.

The greatest of His testimonies is Pentecost. Another testimony is this: He will remind you of what I have said. This means that He confirms My teaching. Who, then, am I? When God Himself expounds and confirms the teaching of Jesus, it follows that Jesus is God. One can see this very, very clearly. If you ask whether the disciples were able to remember what the Lord had said, bear in mind that they wrote their Gospels many years later. There may have been notes. I am now entering another question on which I do not wish to dwell. It appears that some notes may indeed have existed, but I will not remain on that subject; it is not especially important. The essential point is this:

The Holy Spirit brings all things to remembrance. Therefore, what was written did not contain errors caused by the passing of time and the failure of memory. No! For the Holy Spirit makes present again the things Christ had spoken. But the Holy Spirit also teaches. Do you hear? I said this earlier. Why does He teach?

The Holy Spirit, however, does not become incarnate. He teaches human beings by inspiring and illuminating them. Was this necessary? Yes; this is how I wish to present it. The Holy Spirit teaches. Where does He teach? Within the Church, in council and in Synod. This is the Tradition of the Church, which is given by God. That is why what the Fathers of the Church declared together in Synod is inspired by God. That is why we cannot say, “What is a Canon of the Church? Where does it say that we must fast on Wednesday and Friday? Where is that written?” I will tell you where it is written. It is written in the book of the Didache, which reflects the teaching of the Apostles. That is to say,

—which the Holy Spirit taught within the Church. So yes, you see what Tradition is. It is not a tradition of men. It is the Tradition of the Church, which was also written down, if you will, and which does not contradict that other Tradition, the one first committed to writing. For what do you think Holy Scripture is? What do you think the Gospel is? That too is Tradition; it was simply the first to be written down. And what is the other, what we call the Tradition of the Church? It is the Tradition that was written down later. But both have the same source: Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. That is why, when the Fathers write a Canon or render a decision at a Council—what am I saying? What am I saying?

They set down what the Holy Spirit has said. Without going into all the formal expressions—though it is not merely a form, of course, but a formulation; that is what the form means—I need only remind you of the first Apostolic Council. What issue had arisen? It was being said that a person first had to become a Jew, undergo circumcision, and only then become a Christian. So an Apostolic Council was convened in Jerusalem. They then wrote a letter to the Christians of Antioch, where the dispute had arisen, saying: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.” “It seemed good” means “it appeared right.”

It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to write these things to you. Do you see? “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit.” The Teacher of the Church is the Holy Spirit, who is always at work within the Church. That is why we have prophets, and that is why the Canons of our Church possess eternal authority, and so forth.

That is how you should understand it. Of course, if someone had a great deal of time, he could take Saint Cyril as his starting point, draw further material from other writings and books, and say a great many things. But then, my dear ones, we would never finish Saint Cyril. Let us continue.

“The Holy Spirit warned Paul beforehand of what was to happen, so that foreknowledge would make him all the more courageous and cheerful.”

This is what I wanted to explain a little earlier. Now the proper place for it has come. Why did the Holy Spirit warn Paul beforehand about what was going to happen? What was it? Imprisonment and tribulations. “So that he might become more cheerful,” Saint Cyril says, “through foreknowledge.” Here I would like, for a moment, not to...

The Holy Spirit foretells the future. What future? The future of the Church. Of course, there are also cases in which the Holy Spirit foretells the future of particular persons, especially when they are persons of the Church who hold some position or play some role within her. But why does He foretell these things? Does He do so to make someone begin to grieve? If you were told, “On this date next year you will die,” what would you do throughout that year? Of course, such things are said by fortune-tellers who read coffee grounds or cards, by mediums, and by others. And you should know this: if I explain it now...

Someone will seize upon it and be delivered from it. Otherwise, he will wait for the day of his death because he once saw it in a dream or because some fortune-teller told him. If he confesses it in Holy Confession, he will not die on that date, because the message comes from the devil. The devil does not know when a person will die. He simply makes wild guesses. Yet God may allow such predictions to come true because the person believed the devil, and then people say, “You see? It came true!” For God gave them a spirit—there is that word “spirit” again—of deception. Do you see? So if anyone has had such a dream, or if some fortune-teller has told him this or that, let him confess it in Holy Confession, and remember my words: he will live past the date foretold to him, whoever may have foretold it, because the spell of it has been broken. If he does not do this, then let him...

wait for death. So then, why does the Holy Spirit say these things? Saint Cyril tells us precisely: “so that he might become more cheerful”—or, we might say, more courageous and confident. Pay attention to this. The Holy Spirit tells the Church both the good things and the difficult things that are to come, and in this way prepares the Church. He prepares her in accordance with the verse from the Psalms: “I was prepared and was not troubled.” You know that surprise is one of the enemy’s weapons. A surprise attack truly is a weapon of the enemy. That is why we prepare ourselves.

First of all, we prepare against surprise attacks, so that the enemy will not find us asleep, for then we lose our bearings. The first and chief reason the Holy Spirit foretells the future is so that we may be ready. Pay attention to this. If military science regards such readiness as essential and of great importance, how much more necessary is it in the spiritual struggle? For we are struggling against the devil, an invisible enemy. The Apostle Paul says that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, against human beings, but against the spirits of wickedness. Therefore, we need to be ready.

That is the first point. The second is this: when we know, for example, that only a few will be saved, what effect can that have upon us? When the Lord was asked, “Lord, are there few who are being saved?”—will those who are saved be many?—the Lord did not say how many there would be. He said only, “Strive to enter.” Nevertheless, my dear ones, we know that they will not be the majority. The Apostle Paul tells us that it is the remnant that will be saved. “Remnant” means those who remain. Those who are saved will be few; those who remain faithful will be few.

What does this do to the believer? It makes him say within himself, “I want to belong to the remnant. Let me not fall away. Let me belong to the remnant.” What does this produce in him? It makes him cheerful, even more courageous. Far from discouraging him, it steels his resolve. “I want to belong to the remnant.” In this way the Holy Spirit tells us what is to come so that we may prepare ourselves and be strengthened, so that we are not taken by surprise, as I told you. In connection with this—or rather, on the basis of what I have just said—we have, for example, the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, which tells us so many things. What does the Apocalypse tell us? It reveals the course of the Church through time.

That is what the Apocalypse tells us, and therefore, as you see, we need to know it. We must know these things, my dear ones. Take the prophecy concerning the Antichrist. Why must we know it? So that we may be terrified? You know how much alarm has arisen around this subject and how many people have become afraid. On the contrary, we must learn about it precisely so that we will not be terrified, so that we may take the necessary precautions and, secondly, so that we will not be deceived. Is that not important? It is extremely important. When a person knows, and especially when he knows that after the Antichrist comes Christ and the Judgment, he lives the spiritual life and awaits the Lord. “Lift up your heads,” He says.

Lift your heads toward heaven, “because your redemption draws near,” says the Lord. Can this fail to make you cheerful and fill you with joy? Recently, a fellow priest from another place told me something. In his region—I will not say where—there had been an ascetic monk. He had once held a distinguished position and was also a man of learning, and so forth. But he left everything behind, became a monk, and indeed an ascetic. This monk fell asleep—that is, he died—in 1962, many years ago, twenty-five years ago. Now pay attention. He used to say: “The Church is facing tortures and persecutions before which Nero’s persecutions will pale.” He did not mean the persecutions in the time of the Antichrist. Rather—excuse me—he meant tortures and persecution in our own days, we might say in our generation, according to the Lord’s words: “Truly, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.” What does that mean here? It means that these persecutions will occur in our time, in our age, not in the last days. Let me clarify something here. When he said that “Nero’s persecutions will pale by comparison”...

he meant the tortures. Do not misunderstand me, because anyone who reads the ancient martyrologies will be horrified. What more could anyone possibly do to a human being? What worse thing could he do? I will tell you in what sense the ancient tortures pale by comparison. The ancient tortures were directed only against the body—only against the body, not against the soul. Modern tortures are directed against the soul. They may not be painful in the sense of frying me alive or flaying me, but if they paralyze my will and my intellect by means of drugs, by chemical substances...

then I cannot act or resist. That is the point I wish to make. This is a far greater torment, because in this way I have lost my personhood. So I want to emphasize this point: the ancient tortures could not violate the human person, whereas modern tortures do violate the human person. That, at least, is how I understand it.

I do not know; I am telling you how I understand it. And that ascetic also said: “Why do the clergy, the bishops and priests, not warn the Church to prepare herself?” That is another matter. Pay attention, my dear ones, to what this means. The prophetic gift exists within the Church. This does not mean only that a preacher of the Gospel is illumined to speak of new things. He may also be illumined to speak of old truths and make them fresh again. You have heard it said that a particular sermon was prophetic. That does not necessarily mean that it foretold the future. It means that it warned people about things already spoken of. Thus, a prophet is not only someone who speaks something new, but also someone who proclaims anew either a new message or an old one—something another person has already said. You see, then, that the Church must be warned. And the departed ascetic used to say...

“Why is the Church not being warned?” Who knows what this man saw, what he sensed, or what the Spirit of God illumined him to perceive? He trembled before this carelessness, this spirit of unsuspecting complacency. For we must admit that our Christians live unsuspectingly, and there is no more dreadful precondition for disaster than being unsuspecting—living without any awareness of danger. The enemy may be outside sharpening his knives, while we sleep, laugh, and amuse ourselves. The enemy is sharpening his knives. Is that not dreadful?

“These things have been said to us because of the statement already quoted,” says Saint Cyril. What statement is that? The statement about the Holy Spirit being this and that, and so forth. “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit, so that you may not think this means speech uttered by the lips, but rather the good teaching.” Do not forget—as we said, these long explanations can make us forget where we began—that Saint Cyril is explaining the many meanings of the word “spirit.” All this was said so that, when Christ says, “My words are spirit and are life,” no one will think that “spirit” here means merely words spoken by the lips. It means the good teaching. This is one of the meanings of the word “spirit.”

And again, sin too is called “spirit” here. Sin is also called a spirit, as we have said, though in another and contrary sense, as when Hosea 4:12 says, “They were led astray by a spirit of fornication.”

“They were led astray,” he says, “by a spirit of fornication.” Or, as we would say, a spirit—so even the devil is called a spirit. “In each case a qualifying name is added, to indicate what kind of spirit it is.” Whenever we use the word “spirit,” a qualifying term is added to show what this spirit is: a good spirit, an evil spirit—is it an angel, is it sin, is it deception? What is it? “If Scripture is speaking about the human soul, it says ‘the spirit’ with the addition ‘of the man.’” What do we say? The spirit of someone, the spirit of the man, adding the word “man.” “If it is speaking about the wind, it says ‘the spirit of the storm.’” When it means the wind—for the wind, too, is called spirit—it says the spirit...

The Evangelist John says: “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.” What does this mean? The spirit—that is, the wind—blows wherever it wishes. It may be a south wind or a north wind; that is its own affair, so to speak. It begins somewhere and goes somewhere. You know neither where it began nor where it will end, where this wind will die away and become still. What is it? Wind. “If Scripture means sin, it says ‘a spirit of fornication.’ If it means a demon, it says ‘an unclean spirit.’ Therefore, understand what each passage is speaking about, and do not suppose that it refers to the Holy Spirit.”

May it never be! Whenever Scripture says “spirit, spirit, spirit,” do not suppose that it is always referring to the Holy Spirit. For the word “spirit” is a general term, and anything that does not have a dense body is commonly called a spirit. In other words, the word “spirit” has many meanings, and we generally use it for something that has no material body, no dense body. Such a thing is called a spirit. Since demons do not have bodies of this kind, they too are called spirits. Demons do not have dense bodies—that is, material bodies—and for this reason they are called...

spirits. And now, in the little time remaining to us, I ask you to follow something very important. If we know these things—without, of course, becoming overly confident—we shall be able, more or less, to discern whether we are being visited by a spirit of wickedness, a spirit of deception, or the Holy Spirit. This means possessing a spirit of discernment, that is, the gift of discernment. Pay attention, then. “But there is a very great difference. For when the unclean demon comes upon a human soul—may the Lord deliver from this every soul among those listening and those who are absent—it comes upon it like a bloodthirsty wolf, ready to devour a sheep.”

There is a very great difference between the demon’s coming into the soul and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril has just said that when the unclean demon comes into the human soul, he adds a parenthesis: “May God—the Lord God—preserve the souls of those who are listening to me now, as well as those who are absent.” Allow me to dwell briefly on this parenthesis. As soon as he said that when the devil enters the human soul, he comes like a savage, bloodthirsty wolf, ready to devour it as a wolf devours a sheep...

Notice the word “may He deliver”—it is in the optative mood. May God preserve us. To put it as we ordinarily would: God preserve us! May the devil never enter the souls of those listening or those who are absent. My dear friends, Saint Cyril offers this prayer simply because he mentioned the devil. Yet we are forever telling other people to go to the devil. That is what I wanted to point out: our habit of cursing people in this way. If we truly understood what it means to tell someone to go to the devil, we would be seized with horror. It means sending that person under the dominion of the devil. And we say it about both people and things. If, for instance...

a screw goes wrong, we send it to the devil—an inanimate object. If someone does something to us, we send him to the devil—even our own child or our wife. What does that mean? I repeat: we are sending them under Satan’s dominion. Do you know what that means? It is horrifying, utterly horrifying. In the face of this horror, Saint Cyril says, “May it never be! May God—the Lord God—deliver your souls from Satan’s dominion.” Do you know the story told in the life of Saint Nektarios of Aegina? Those of you who have read his life will know it. A young girl lived in Kolokynthou, a district of Athens. She lived there...

at the beginning of the century, while Saint Nektarios of Aegina was still alive. Her father, a drunkard and a terrible blasphemer, sent his daughter to buy him cigarettes from the kiosk. She said, “I’m not going,” in that characteristic way children sometimes do. Then, with all his heart, he sent her to the devil. At that very moment, my dear friends, the girl became possessed. The devil entered her soul. And what happened then? As the demon itself confessed, it was one of the worst demons. Indeed, they took the girl to Saint Nektarios of Aegina on Aegina. As I told you, the Saint was still alive.

Saint Nektarios of Aegina did not heal her. That is, God did not grant it; it was not that Saint Nektarios refused—he did not refuse—but God did not grant her healing and the expulsion of Satan. The girl suffered terribly. In the end, the devil was driven out several years later, after Saint Nektarios had fallen asleep in the Lord. My dear friends, this is a very instructive incident, and we must learn from it: never tell any person to go to the devil, not even our worst enemy, if only we understood what it means for a person to fall into Satan’s hands. Never, ever—not even an object. After all, objects do not belong to us. We may be their...

users, the ones who make use of them, but we are not their owners, because God alone is the owner of all things. By what right, then, do I send an object under Satan’s dominion? By what right? That is why I made this observation in connection with Saint Cyril’s parenthesis. How, then, does this demon—that is, the devil—come? Like a bloodthirsty wolf. You know, when we say “the devil,” strictly speaking there is only one devil: Lucifer. We loosely call every demon “the devil.” The devil is one; the demons are many.

As I told you, we use the word loosely. In the same way, Satan is one—there is only one Satan—though we loosely speak of “satans,” meaning the demons, and so forth. He comes like a bloodthirsty wolf, ready to pounce and devour a sheep. “His presence is utterly savage, the sensation is extremely oppressive, and the understanding becomes darkened.” These are three short statements making three distinct points. His presence—what does it manifest? The devil comes; that is, his presence enters the person. Satan’s presence makes the person extremely savage.

What strength does a demon-possessed person possess? Terrible strength. A madman does not possess such strength. Indeed, often, if you push him just a little—I said a madman; forgive me, I meant a drunkard, forgive me—a drunkard has no strength. Push a drunkard slightly and he will fall down. A madman does have strength. So if the madman is stronger—and we may set the drunkard aside—then tell me: does not the demon-possessed person certainly surpass him? The demon-possessed person surpasses both the drunkard and the madman. And I will tell you why. A madman acts out of his madness. Whatever has happened to his human faculties, he misinterprets whatever he sees before him.

He misinterprets it; he understands it wrongly. Suppose he sees a woman dressed in black. Here there is confusion between the symbol and what it symbolizes. Because black is a symbol of evil, he confuses the symbol with the thing symbolized. As soon as he sees the unsuspecting woman in black, he thinks that she is evil itself—not a symbol of evil, but evil itself—and he attacks and kills her. But here we are dealing with a madman. What directs him? His madness, so to speak. The demon-possessed person, however, my dear friends, is driven and controlled by the demon, whose purpose is to cause harm on a far wider scale—far wider indeed. What strength a demon-possessed person has!

Remember the demoniac of the Gergesenes. Wherever they confined him, he escaped. They bound him with chains, and he broke them. He could remain nowhere. The demons dragged him into the wilderness in a truly terrifying manner. He wore no clothes, and so forth. Thus we see how utterly savage the presence of demons in a person is. Demon-possessed people often have a savage expression as well. Yes, a savage expression. And the works they produce also bear a savage countenance. So, what was I saying? Forgive me—if they are painters...

who paint, the faces they depict have a savage expression. Yes. From a painting, one may discern what sort of person the painter is. Indeed. I have a very characteristic example—actually two, if you like. Listen, I have two. I shall tell you only one, of which I have personal experience.

God knows much more. This man had known me since I was a child. It was summer. I had taken the Euchologion with me; I have told you this before. Some of you who have been listening for years may remember it. I had put the Euchologion in a bag like the one I have here. It was not this particular bag, but a different one. In any case, it had compartments dividing the inside. Nowadays I carry the Euchologion with me, though I did not do so before; now I always have it with me. I did not carry it then because it was a larger, heavier volume, which I kept in my bookcase. But since I was going to see him, I took it from the bookcase, put it in my bag, and went. When I arrived, he was asleep, and I waited for him to wake. Though it was summer, he was wrapped up completely, like a lobster...

I was going to give my fifth talk at 303. So after my morning talk, I returned and went there. When he emerged from the sheet in which he was wrapped, he said to me, “Why have you come?” “I came, my brother, just to say good morning.” “I know,” he said, “I know. Tell me, what is that red book in your bag? Why did you bring it?” I froze. Do you hear? He had not seen that red book, yet he said, “On such-and-such a page—good heavens! Who is the man who wrote what is there?” That page contained the exorcisms of Basil the Great. Immediately afterward he said, “Bah, he is nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing.” In other words, demons acknowledge something and then refuse to acknowledge it; they deny it and push it away.

I assure you, I was badly shaken—badly shaken. The house was on the ground floor, and the window was open. I kept looking at it, wondering whether I might have to jump through it and flee, lest I suffer what happened to the seven sons of Sceva, when the possessed man fell upon them and mauled them. I have told you this to show that he had a demon; he was not insane, although he had been hospitalized in a psychiatric institution. He had a demon, because an insane man does not know what is inside your bag. At one point he said to me, “Why did you come?” I said, “Should I stay and read a prayer over you?” He replied, “Read over me, but you will accomplish nothing.” “Never mind,” I told him. “Even if I accomplish nothing, I must read over you.” An insane man does not say such things. A demon-possessed man does. I tell you this, and now let me continue.

I went to the house. It is noteworthy that this man eventually killed his mother with a hatchet. That is why the Larissa newspaper Vani reported it many years ago; perhaps you remember. While the woman was washing dishes at the sink, he took a hatchet, struck her on the head, and split it in two. Before this, outside his room there had been a painting. He was also a painter, and he had painted a certain face. I will not tell the whole story; it is a sorrowful one. But when I saw that face, I said, “The young man who painted this picture is the one asleep inside, whom I came to visit. He truly is demon-possessed.”

That painting reflected a demonic countenance—a demonic countenance. Yes, I am telling you the truth. It is a particular expression that truly reveals when a person has been consumed by the presence of Satan. So when Saint Cyril says that this presence is utterly savage, he means that its savagery is expressed in the face of the person who has received the presence of Satan. And the sensation is exceedingly oppressive. If, for example, you give me a piece of ice to hold for a little while, it is not unpleasant.

But if I have to hold the ice for a long time, the sensation becomes unpleasant. Or if something is very hot, I drop it; I cannot hold it. Do I not experience a deeply unpleasant sensation when I hold something extremely cold or extremely hot? In the same way, my beloved, the presence of Satan gives a person what Saint Cyril very rightly calls an oppressive sensation. People often say—and I will illustrate it with another image—that when we have a severe cold, our eyes are heavy and our ears are blocked. But when we experience a miraculous healing—I say miraculous simply to make the contrast immediate—we feel as though our eyes have opened. When the fever subsides, we feel entirely different, because our former condition was extremely oppressive.

The presence of Satan within a person’s soul and body produces an exceedingly oppressive sensation. But what more can I say? The time, my beloved, has passed. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Τα μεν παλαιά υπομιμνήσκει, υπενθυμίζει. Τα δε καινούργια τα διδάσκει. Και το λέγει ως εξής παρακάτω: «Περί ου είπεν ο Κύριος, εκείνος υμάς...» Ποιος εκείνος; Ο Παράκλητος, το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. «Υμάς διδάξει πάντα και υπομνήσει υμάς πάντα». Και θα σας διδάξει όλα και θα σας υπομνήσει, υπενθυμίσει, όλα. Θυμηθείτε εκεί στον Μυστικό Δείπνο, όταν ο Χριστός είπε: «Έχω πολλά να σας πω, αλλ' ου δύνασθε βαστάζειν άρτι». Δεν μπορείτε πια να τα κρατήσετε αυτά που έχω να σας πω. Δηλαδή, ούτε το μυαλό σας τα χωράει ούτε η δυνατότητά σας. Συνεπώς, πότε θα τα έλεγε αυτά;

Το Πνεύμα το Άγιον υπενθυμίζει. Και συνεπώς, εκείνα τα οποία εγράφησαν δεν γράφτηκαν λάθη ένεκα της λησμοσύνης του χρόνου. Όχι! Γιατί το Πνεύμα το Άγιον φέρει παρόντα εκείνα τα οποία ο Χριστός ελάλησε. Αλλά και διδάσκει το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Το ακούτε; Είπα προηγουμένως. Γιατί διδάσκει;

που εδίδαξε το Πνεύμα το Άγιον μέσα στην Εκκλησία. Ναι, συνεπώς βλέπετε την παράδοση. Δεν είναι η παράδοση των ανθρώπων. Είναι η παράδοση της Εκκλησίας, η οποία, αν θέλετε, και κατεγράφη και η οποία δεν έρχεται σε αντίφαση με εκείνη την άλλη, την πρωτόγραφη παράδοση. Γιατί τι νομίζετε πως είναι η Αγία Γραφή; Τι νομίζετε πως είναι το Ευαγγέλιο; Και εκείνο παράδοση είναι, μόνο που εκείνο πρώτο γράφτηκε. Και η άλλη, η λεγομένη παράδοση της Εκκλησίας, ποια είναι; Εκείνη που δεύτερη γράφτηκε. Αλλά κοινή πηγή έχει τον Ιησού Χριστό και το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Γι' αυτό οι Πατέρες, όταν γράφουν έναν κανόνα, αποφαίνονται για κάτι σε μια σύνοδο. Τι λέγω, τι λέγω;

«Γιατί», λέει, «δεν ειδοποιείται η Εκκλησία;» Ποιος ξέρει ο άνθρωπος τι έβλεπε, τι αισθανόταν, τι το Πνεύμα του Θεού τον εφώτιζε, και έτρεμε μπροστά σε αυτήν την ξενοιασιά, σε αυτό το πνεύμα των ανύποπτων; Γιατί πρέπει να πούμε ότι οι χριστιανοί μας ζουν ανύποπτα και δεν υπάρχει φοβερότερη προϋπόθεση καταστροφής από την ανυποψία. Το να ζούμε δηλαδή ανύποπτα. Να είναι ο εχθρός απ' έξω, να ακονίζει τα μαχαίρια του, και εμείς να κοιμόμαστε και να γελάμε και να διασκεδάζουμε. Και ο εχθρός ακονίζει τα μαχαίρια. Δεν είναι φοβερό;
