Summary
Saint Cyril compares the one Holy Spirit to water that nourishes different plants, showing how one divine source distributes diverse gifts among believers. The lecture distinguishes ordinary Christian faith in the Triune God and the Church’s doctrines from the exceptional wonder-working faith granted to only a few. Those lacking the charism of discernment should cautiously withhold judgment about extraordinary visions, while prayer, the Cross, and invocation of Jesus Christ protect believers from deception.

My dear friends, we are now in the sixteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, in the twelfth paragraph. Last time we heard a beautiful example from Saint Cyril. He compared the Holy Spirit to water. Water is one, yet when it falls upon the earth and waters the plants, each plant produces according to its own nature. He says: the same water produces the white lily; the same water produces the red rose; the same water produces the violet and the hyacinths, and so on. It is the same water. In the same way, the Holy Spirit is one, and He distributes His gifts, His charisms, among human beings.
He continues: “For in one person He makes use of the tongue for wisdom; in another He illumines the soul with prophecy. To another He gives the power to drive out demons. To another He gives the ability to interpret the divine Scriptures.” To one person He gives the ability and the power to interpret the Scriptures, especially difficult passages. How often do we ask, “What can this passage possibly mean?” Remember Philip—excuse me—and the Ethiopian. The Holy Spirit sent Philip, as Saint Cyril will tell us a little further on, saying to him in effect, “Go there, and you will find what you are to find.” Philip drew near to the Ethiopian’s chariot and asked him, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man was reading a passage from Isaiah. “Do you know and understand what you are reading?” The Ethiopian replied, “How could I, unless someone helps me?” So he invited Philip into his chariot, and Philip explained it to him. The Ethiopian asked, “Tell me, about whom is the prophet speaking here—about himself or about someone else?” The passage was one that the man could not understand. Philip then told him, “He is not speaking about himself, but about Christ.” “And who is He?” So Philip the deacon began to catechize him.
A deacon—that is what the word means, as I have explained to you. “To another He gives the ability to interpret the divine Scriptures. In another He strengthens chastity,” that is, purity and self-restraint, especially in young people. “Another He instructs in works of mercy.” You see, some people have an exceedingly merciful heart. They may not be able to interpret Holy Scripture and may not know many things, but they possess a merciful heart. In the same way, someone who interprets Holy Scripture may not have such a merciful heart; that is, he may give alms, but not to any great extent.
“Another He teaches to fast and to pursue ascesis.” He teaches another person to fast and to undertake ascetic discipline. Do you think everyone is capable of prolonged fasting? No, not everyone is. Some people love fasting and receive from the Holy Spirit the charism that enables them to fast for long periods and to pursue ascesis, for ascetic discipline has many levels. Not everyone can endure the same degree of ascesis. Yet everyone will find some place, some level, at which to undertake it. So when you see an ascetic shut away in a cave, living there for years on one piece of dry bread every two or three days, could you do that? I would say that I could not. But he does it. How is he able to do it?
I pursue ascesis, and he pursues ascesis. But how does he pursue it? At another level, on another step, at another degree. This means that each person receives the charism to possess what has been given to him. “Another He teaches to hold things in contempt.”
“Another He teaches to hold the things of the body in contempt.” He teaches him how to regard material things as of little importance, as we were saying in general. He does not attach too much importance even to the clothes he wears. “Another He prepares for martyrdom.” He prepares another person for martyrdom. If you were to ask me which is the highest of all these charisms that the Holy Spirit possesses and gives to the faithful, I would answer: martyrdom. And notice that Saint Cyril does not say, “He inspires martyrdom.” He specifically says, “He prepares him for martyrdom.”
We prepare bread in just this way. Making bread involves a process. We take the leaven, add it, and do all the familiar things. There is an entire process before we finally have the bread. Martyrdom too, as Saint Cyril tells us here, requires preparation. Sometimes a person is entirely unaware that this preparation is taking place. Yet the Holy Spirit prepares him through various events that serve as preludes to martyrdom.
Think of someone who is going to fly in a rocket, travel through space, and remain there for a hundred days. Do you think he can simply leave behind his ordinary way of life, climb into the rocket, and go? No, my dear friends. Do you know what exercises a person must undergo before becoming a space traveler? Do you know what kind of training it is? Formidable training. In the same way, the Holy Spirit prepares the person who is going to suffer martyrdom. And I repeat: often the person receiving this charism is unaware of it. Thus, one and the same Spirit gives all these gifts. “But in different people it is this same Spirit, and not some other Spirit, nor one different from Himself.” It is the same Holy Spirit who gives different gifts to different people—the one and the same Spirit—“as it is written,” as Holy Scripture says. And where is this written? It is written
in the twelfth chapter of First Corinthians. What does it say? The Apostle Paul says, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for his benefit.” What, then, is this manifestation? The gift that is given makes the Giver—the Holy Spirit—manifest. And the Holy Spirit gives whatever He judges will be for that person’s benefit. If, for example, God, who knows every person’s heart, sees pride within my heart, will He ever give me the charism of healing the sick or driving out demons? Never. Why?
Suppose I bring about a healing and cure a sick person, while inwardly I have no purity of heart—my heart is unclean and filled with pride. Would I not then fall into the greatest temptation and begin to imagine that I am someone important? How could the Holy Spirit give me something that would lead to my condemnation? Would you place a well-sharpened knife in the hands of your two-year-old child to play with? Would you ever give a five-year-old child a box of matches and say, “My little John, play with these matches. I shall be away from home for a couple of hours, so play with the matches”? Would you do that?
Would the Holy Spirit, then, give something that would harm a person? This is why Saint Paul says, “for his benefit.” He will give a charism, but that charism must serve, first, the benefit of the person who receives it, and second, the benefit of the Church. “For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another, the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another, faith.” Do you know that faith is a gift, and that not all people are counted worthy of this gift? For the Apostle Paul says, “Faith is not given to everyone.” Faith is not for everyone. But what kind of faith is he speaking about here?
This is a very old subject, discussed near the beginning of Saint Cyril’s Catechetical Lectures, where he speaks about faith in connection with the words, “I believe in one God.” He offers a beautiful analysis of the words “I believe.” He speaks of the faith by which I believe—for even this requires the Spirit of God: that I believe in God, in the Triune God, in the person of Jesus Christ and His redeeming sacrifice, in the resurrection of the dead, and in eternal life. In other words, I believe in everything that defines and expresses the Christian faith—its doctrines. But there is another kind of faith that does not belong to this category. It is the faith that moves mountains, the faith by which one can “remove mountains,” as
the Apostle Paul says in the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians. It is the faith that works miracles. Thus, faith in God and in all the doctrines of our Church is one thing, while the faith through which a person works miracles is another. The Holy Spirit does, of course, give faith as a universal gift to those who are baptized. It is another matter that some people do not wish to believe. I repeat: “Faith is not given to everyone.” But only to a few will the Holy Spirit give that faith which works miracles.
“By the same Spirit”—always by the same Holy Spirit—“to another, gifts of healings; by the same Spirit, to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the discernment of spirits.” I would like to dwell on this last gift for a moment. This discernment of spirits is precisely what John the Evangelist means when he says, “Do not believe every spirit.” Do not believe every spirit, he says, but test and discern whether the spirits are from God. As we shall see a little further on, the word “spirit” is very important here. Discernment means the ability to determine whether a dream someone has seen, a vision someone has received, or a miracle that has occurred is from God...
or from the devil. Do not forget that the devil works miracles. This is demonic power, and in our own time many people work miracles through the power of Satan—even, if you will, people within the Church. Yes, the Holy Spirit is not at work there. The evil spirit is at work. Great care is needed—very great care. The Lord says that many will deceive others, and the Apostle Paul says that many deceivers have gone out; John the Evangelist says this as well. Who are these deceivers? They deceive both in their teaching and in the power at work through them. What kind of power do they possess? In other words, are they moved
and acting by the Spirit of God, or by evil spirits?
Be extremely careful on this point. I have examples I could give right now. I would prefer to avoid speaking about this subject, but unfortunately, I do not know—perhaps these things must be said. There are the so-called “illumined” men and women in Athens, whose followers number around twenty-five thousand. They hold gatherings and there present wonders and signs. Someone may enter, and they can tell him who he is. Yet these people, the so-called “illumined,” are mostly women. This movement also has a point of origin, and perhaps one day we shall examine its history. But very often things occur there with which it would be
impossible—impossible, impossible—for the Holy Spirit to be involved, unless the Holy Spirit makes mistakes. Makes mistakes! Does the Holy Spirit make mistakes? Is that possible? And yet, my dear friends, these people say things that are not doctrinally correct. They write entire pamphlets, one pamphlet after another. I have seen a sampling of them myself. What can I tell you? It is astonishing! “The School of the Most Holy Theotokos,” “The School of Christ”—publications in which the Most Holy Theotokos supposedly says such things as, “Do not grieve and weary our Father, God, who is troubled because of you.”
They say that He does not know what to do with His children, along with other such things. Foolishness upon foolishness. A little book entitled The Illumined Women has been published by Father Charalambos Vasilopoulos. Read it; it is very short. Two cassette recordings by Mr. Sotiropoulos, a theologian in Athens, have also circulated. Listen to them, and you will see what dreadful things these are. I have received people of this kind and tried to convince them, but it is impossible. And do you know why they cannot be persuaded? Because miracles occur, and they imagine that a miracle is evidence of the truth. This is the deception. They cannot understand that a miracle—as I have told you before—is not evidence of the truth, for the simple reason that the devil also works miracles.
I shall give you one characteristic example, which I think will convince you. It is said—unless I have told you this before—that at the First Ecumenical Council, as you know, a courageous and terrible battle was fought against the heretical teaching of Arius and in defense of the truth that Jesus Christ is perfect man and perfect God. Arius taught that Jesus Christ was a created being. I tell you, it was a fearsome struggle. There were three hundred and eighteen God-bearing Fathers, all bishops. Saint Athanasius, who fought this battle—not alone, of course, although he stood out more than the others—was then a deacon. It is said, then, that Saint Achillios, who was bishop of Larissa,
There at the Council, he performed a miracle before Arius’s very eyes, to convince him that Christ is God—that Christ is God. But I will tell you about another miracle, one performed by Saint Spyridon, who also took part in the First Ecumenical Council. You all know this miracle of Saint Spyridon; it is better known. To convince Arius, he took a roof tile and squeezed it. Water flowed downward from the tile, while fire rose upward. Through this miracle Saint Spyridon was saying, “Do you see?” Saint Achillios brought forth oil. Do you see? Do you see?
The tile is one, yet within it are the clay from which it is made, the fire, and the water—three different elements, so to speak. The tile is one; likewise, God is one in three hypostases: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Son is God. Nevertheless, my dear friends, if you read the proceedings of the First Ecumenical Council, you will not find this mentioned, simply because it is not an argument that establishes the truth, even though the miracle was performed by a Saint. Have you ever heard us, on the Sunday of Orthodoxy or whenever we speak about Orthodoxy, or when we contend against heresy—especially against anti-Trinitarians, who do not believe in the dogma of the Holy Trinity—
use the miracle of Saint Spyridon as evidence? That miracle is only for the faithful. We cannot use a miracle as an argument; we must use Holy Scripture—Holy Scripture. What does Holy Scripture say? That is what matters, not the miracle. Pay close attention to this, because it is very dangerous. You cannot say, “I was healed, and therefore I believe in this man.” That man may be under the influence of the devil. My hand was healed, my leg was healed, my eye was healed, my head was healed—my health, in any event, was restored—and so I believe in this man. Yet that man may be in delusion, deep in delusion. Do you hear me, please? Do you understand? Earlier, when I spoke to you about Papastefanou, I meant that he too belongs in this category.
There is something I told you I would explain, but it slipped my mind until now: how Christians can respond. What did the letter I read to you show? That Christian was praying, and so the other man could not perform the miracle he wanted to perform—supposedly bringing down the Holy Spirit. Supposedly, mind you. Saint Cyril tells us the following in one of his earlier catechetical lectures: when Simon Magus went to Rome and performed wonders and signs, he even declared that he would rise into the air and ascend high above the ground. He was a fearsome sorcerer. We will speak about this next time, when we come to the Acts of the Apostles.
I have made a note there, if I remember correctly, so I will probably tell you about it then. Simon was indeed carried up into the sky; he rose into the air. What was the devil doing here? He was crudely and grotesquely imitating the Ascension of Christ, because Simon wanted to claim—as indeed he did claim—“I am the Holy Spirit incarnate.” Then, we are told, some Christians joined together in prayer. While Simon was still up in the air, they shot the arrow of prayer—and down he came. He fell to the ground and was killed. Down he came. Such is the power of the prayers of the faithful. Once, a man had gone to Patras...
a spiritualist, who was going to give a performance there—or rather, it had been announced that he would give a spiritualist performance in a cinema theater. They placed a table on the stage and sold tickets. Two young men went in and fastened a cross beneath the table. Then the spiritualist entered. He began saying whatever it was that he said, but no spirit would come down. He began to sweat; his face turned red and then pale again. At last he told the audience, “Forgive me, but I cannot do this tonight. Something is happening to me.”
“Please collect the price of your tickets as you leave.” A few years ago, Papastefanou, whom we have been discussing, came to Athens. He is that priest and archimandrite who lives in America, and so forth. He came to a gathering and attempted to perform a healing, because wherever he goes, he performs healings. Then a Christian—if you will allow me, I could say more about him—began to pray: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.” Papastefanou could do nothing, just as the letter I read to you earlier, during the question period, describes. He could do nothing; he grew flushed, began sweating, and so on.
“Someone is here,” he said, “and I do not know what is happening, but something is preventing us.” My dear friends, when someone raised the Precious Cross and prayed, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Most Holy Theotokos, save us,” I ask you: if this were from the Spirit of God, would it have been hindered by the invocation of Christ’s Holy Name? What does this mean? It means that these miracles are undoubtedly wrought by the devil, by Satan. Please, I beg you, pay close attention to this. Do you see how strongly I insist upon it? Because delusion is very near—very near indeed. So then, to return to Saint Cyril, what does the gift of discernment mean?
It means being able to discern whether something comes from God or from the devil. You know that there is natural discernment and spiritual discernment. Of course, I will not analyze here the vast and profound subject of discernment. I will only say that natural discernment is the judgment a person acquires through experience, human wisdom, observation, and so forth. It enables him to distinguish matters and say, “No, that is not how it is; this is how it is. Do not do that, because you will be harmed. It will not turn out well.” For example, you may meet a young woman who is being considered as a prospective bride. We often say that we should meet her. Yet perhaps you hardly need to see her before saying, “She is not suitable.” There may be certain traits and small details through which you can understand, more or less, what another person is like. This is a kind of experience that all of us possess to some degree—more or less, more or less. But...
natural ability is one thing. When Saint Cyril speaks here of “the discernment of spirits,” he means a spiritual gift. A person who has only natural discernment cannot discern these things. He cannot. Someone comes to me and says, “I saw a vision.” Now what was it? Where did it come from—from God or from the devil? You know how people come and tell me that they see something, feel something, or experience something unusual. Since I, poor man, do not possess this gift, this charism, I say, “I do not know. Be careful.” In such cases, let me give you a safeguard. This is not really our subject at present, since we are discussing what the Holy Spirit gives, but now and then we pause at such points. It is something written by one of the ascetic Fathers.
It is in the first volume of the Philokalia, though I do not remember who wrote it. He says this: whenever you see something, do not accept it. If it comes from the devil, you have been saved from deception. If it comes from God, God will not be angry with you, because He Himself told us to be watchful lest we be led astray. The Father gives a beautiful example. A master of a household, he says, had to leave on a long journey. He left his servant in the tower and told him, “Take care: at night, you must never open the door to anyone.”
The master departed. One night he returned and knocked at the door. “Open the door for me,” he said. “Who are you?” the servant asked. “It is I,” his master replied. But the servant said, “My master told me never to open the tower door at night. In the morning I will see who you are, and then I will open it for you.” The author, this Father, then asks: “Will the master be angry, or will he say that he has an excellent and faithful servant who obeys his command absolutely, even though he left his own master outside for one night?”
In the same way, he says, God will not be angry if He grants you a vision and you do not accept it. You do not accept it because you lack the gift of discernment, you are uncertain about the vision’s origin, and so you take precautions and remain watchful. God will not be angry with you. On the contrary, He will praise you. And what is the night in this example? The night, my dear friends, is this present life. In this life we do not see the spirits, nor do we possess the knowledge we might otherwise have. So if something astonishing should ever appear to us, we must be careful. Besides, demonic visions often leave small openings through which you can recognize that they are demonic.
They leave behind turmoil and other such things. I have told you this before, and I will repeat it, because I think many of you may have experienced it: you have a dream in which you supposedly see Christ seated upon a throne, but suddenly He sprouts horns, or perhaps a little tail appears. Tell me, when you wake up, will you not say that this was not Christ? Would Christ allow a little tail—or any tail at all—or horns to appear? Or strange laughter and other such things? These are permitted so that you may understand that it is the enemy, the devil, grotesquely imitating Christ. So be careful—very careful. But what about other visions that may have no such signs? Then listen carefully to me.
You must neither reject them nor accept them. This is the general counsel of the Fathers: neither reject nor accept. Aristotle said something similar, although he is neither a Father of our Church nor a Christian. Before Christ, in his treatment of dreams, he said that neither rejecting them nor accepting them is without danger. So what do we do? We set the matter aside. Very often you come and tell me about some experience, and I say, “Very well, forget about it and move on.” You ask, “How do you interpret it?” I answer, “Just forget about it,” because I cannot determine what it was.
I am not always able to determine such things. Some are obvious, but others are not. And so the Holy Spirit gives this gift: the ability to discern the spirits. It is what John the Evangelist says: “Do not believe every spirit,” but discern whether the spirits are from God. “To another, various kinds of tongues.” The reference to tongues certainly includes speaking in tongues, which had already ceased in the time of the Apostles and which, of course, is not the chief or essential gift. The Apostle Paul himself says this. But it does not refer only to the miraculous charism of speaking in tongues.
It can also mean the ability to learn a foreign language, or several languages, so that you may speak and preach the Gospel. Pay attention: this happens through natural means, yet it is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Let me give you an example. Saint John the Baptist was God’s gift to humanity. He became the Forerunner of the Messiah and prepared the way of the Lord. He was unquestionably a gift from Heaven to mankind. But can you tell me how he was born? He was born in the natural way, from his mother and father. That is how Saint John was born. His birth was not supernatural, though it may have been accompanied by certain miracles.
Zechariah was struck mute, and his mouth was opened when the child was to be named on the eighth day, at his circumcision, and so forth. These were signs that this child was wondrous. But his birth was natural: he was conceived from his father’s seed. Christ, however, was not born through natural conception. So something can be a gift from God and at the same time come about through a natural process. What do I mean by this? You may attend a school for foreign languages, yet receive from the Holy Spirit the gift of learning one or more languages easily. If I, for example, were sent to Africa to learn Swahili, or whatever the language might be there,
I would need fifty years to learn anything. I do not think I have the gift of learning languages, to tell you the truth. Pay attention: these are charisms. They are gifts of the Holy Spirit, even when they come through the natural process, through natural means. And do not forget—so that you are not scandalized by what I am saying—that the Great Book of Needs contains a prayer for children who are beginning to learn sacred letters. It is a short prayer for a child who is about to receive instruction in sacred learning, what we might call catechesis. Why do we offer this prayer? We offer it so that the Holy Spirit may illumine the child. Yet at the same time, the child sits on a chair or stool, with paper and pencil, in order to learn sacred letters.
The ordinary process of the school desk, paper, and pencil is followed, and the Holy Spirit comes to assist. This too is a gift of the Holy Spirit. If you remain without the help of the Holy Spirit, you may certainly make a great effort, but I do not know what fruit it will bear, or whether that achievement will ultimately be for the glory of God or for your destruction. Some years ago, for instance, an international swindler was arrested who knew seven languages. He certainly knew seven languages, but that ability was not a gift of the Holy Spirit, simply because he used those languages precisely to make his frauds easier to carry out.
“To another, the interpretation of tongues. But all these are brought about by one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” The Holy Spirit is one. The Holy Spirit is not divided; He distributes the gifts.
“Since ignorance may sometimes lead you into confusion, leaving you uncertain about which spirit the written passage refers to, it is well now to make certain which spirit Holy Scripture calls holy.” Pay attention here. Saint Cyril says that the word “spirit” appears in many passages of Holy Scripture. “It speaks simply of spirit,” he writes. And because there is a danger of confusion—which spirit is being spoken of here?—we must examine and see when Holy Scripture uses the word “spirit” to mean the Holy Spirit, and when it does not.
You can see, then, that this word is very important. Saint Cyril devotes a considerable passage to this point, and I ask you to pay close attention. I remember once speaking with a Jehovah’s Witness who was preparing for Baptism. She said, “The spirit passed over the flower, and it fell away”; and she claimed that the same happens to man, who is like the flower: the spirit departs, and so forth. I told her, “Here, ‘spirit’ does not mean ‘soul,’” because she wanted to argue that the soul ceases to exist. As you know, among the great variety of heretical beliefs held by Jehovah’s Witnesses, there is also the belief that the soul is mortal.
They suppose and believe that the soul, regarded as a kind of function of the body, dies. When the body dies, the soul dies as well. Those who believe that the soul dies are called mortal-soulists. This is not a new heresy; it is an old one. In that example used by the Jehovah’s Witnesses, however, “spirit” means wind. It means wind—something entirely different. But let me say no more, because Saint Cyril himself will explain it to us. What I want to tell you is that we must learn the many meanings of the word “spirit,” so that we do not fall into confusion; and, as he says here, we must make ourselves secure in our understanding. He begins with the example of the word “Christ,” before taking up the word “spirit” and examining it at considerable length, as I have said.
“Aaron, David, and Saul were called ‘Christ,’ and others too are called ‘christs’; but there is only one true Christ. In the same way, since the title ‘spirit’ is used of various things, it is good to see what, properly speaking, the Holy Spirit is.” He says that the name “Christ” was also given to other persons. Aaron was called Christ. Why? Because he was anointed with that myrrh which had been prepared and kept for the anointing of the high priest. The Hebrews possessed this myrrh.
David and Saul are also called Christ. David was not a high priest; he was a king, and so was Saul. But they were anointed with the Lord’s myrrh, which is called chrism, from the verb “to anoint.” Notice the spelling of the Greek word: chrío, with an iota—chi, rho, iota, omega.
Well...
The high priests and the kings were anointed. Thus Aaron was called “the Lord’s Christ,” meaning one anointed in the name of the Lord. But David too was called the Lord’s Christ, and Saul was also called the Lord’s Christ. All who were anointed as kings or high priests were called the Lord’s christs. Indeed.
Before David was anointed and became king, and so forth, he was given an opportunity to kill Saul. Saul, while pursuing David, went to sleep inside a cave, while David’s companions were in the depths of that same cave. And you know that when we enter a cave, we cannot see anything because it is dark; but someone deep inside the cave can see what is happening at its entrance. So Saul, who was searching for David with a large army, lay down to sleep at the entrance of that cave. And David’s companions said to him, “Look! God has delivered Saul into your hands.” Here was an opportunity which, I tell you, could have been taken as a miracle. You see?
Clearly, God wants you to be king, since Samuel has already rejected Saul and, by God’s command, David has already been proclaimed the next king. Yet Saul had not died or been killed; he was still alive. God often allows such a condition to continue, though it is a state of deposition: Saul no longer has the grace of God. And yet someone might call this a “miracle.” But David did not base his action on the miracle. Had he supposedly relied on that miracle, he could have broken a commandment: “You shall not murder.” His scriptural argument was not the supposed miracle, as though he could simply say, “Yes, that is right.”
“Let us creep up on tiptoe and kill him.” But what did David say? “I cannot lay a profane hand upon the Lord’s Christ. He is the Lord’s Christ. How could I do such a thing?” So he went softly forward on tiptoe and cut off a piece of the king’s robe. After Saul had left and gone down the mountainside, David came out of the cave and called after him: “King Saul! Look and see whether a piece is missing from your robe, from your garment.” Saul looked, and it was missing. “Here it is—do you see it? Here it is. God delivered you into my hands, but I did you no harm. Why, then, are you seeking my death?”
I am telling you these things, though they stray a little from our subject, to give you some relief by using what is called inner illustration within a talk, and also so that you may learn—that we may all learn—Holy Scripture. So Saul was the Lord’s Christ, David was the Lord’s Christ, and so forth. Yes, says Saint Cyril, but Christ in the proper and fullest sense—the one who is truly Christ—is one. There is only one: Jesus Christ. And then he continues.
“And concerning the title of the Holy Spirit”—the word “title” here means the name of the Holy Spirit—various things bear this name, and it is good for us to examine them. “For many things are called spirit.” Many things are designated by the word “spirit.” Our soul is called spirit. Our soul is called spirit. An angel is also called spirit, as is the wind: the wind that blows is called spirit. A great virtue is called spirit; an impure deed is called spirit; and various hostile demons are also called spirits.
“When you hear these things, take care that, because they share the same name, you do not mistake one for another.” Pay attention: because the same word has many meanings, you must not suppose that any one of these things is the Holy Spirit. Simon Magus, for example, being completely under the influence of demonic power, believed, because he possessed that power, that he was the Holy Spirit. He made that desperate claim—for only a desperate man could say such a thing—that he was the incarnation of the Holy Spirit, when in truth he was nothing but an evil spirit, utterly evil. Saint Cyril will now examine in detail what he has stated briefly, using passages from Holy Scripture to establish how Scripture means something different each time it uses the word “spirit.”
Concerning our soul, Holy Scripture says: “His spirit shall go forth, and he shall return to his earth.” This is the passage we mentioned to the Jehovah’s Witness. It also says of man that “the spirit passed through, and he is no more.”
So, “His spirit shall go forth”—this comes from the verb “to go forth.” His spirit departs. Whose spirit? Man’s spirit. “And he shall return to his earth.” If you pay attention here, someone who did not understand it properly might think that man’s spirit—that is, his soul—departs and then returns to the earth. But what returns to the earth? The spirit? No, the man returns—one half of him.
His body is made from dust, and it returns to the earth—that is, to the grave. So it does not mean that the spirit returns to the dust, but that the body returns to the dust, or “to his earth.” I add this explanation so that you may see how far astray someone can go if he is not careful. What, then, does “spirit” mean here? It means the human soul, which is also called spirit. Concerning this same soul, Scripture says again: “He who forms the spirit of man within him”—the One who fashions and creates the spirit within man. As you know, the word “soul” also has many meanings. It is a word with many meanings, but let us not go any further into that. Concerning the angels: angels too are called spirits. It says in the Psalms:
“He makes His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire.” He who makes, fashions, and creates—“He makes His angels spirits.” He makes them spirits, and they are His angels, the messengers of His will. What does the passage say? “He makes them spirits”—and indeed, spirits that are created. The human soul, the human spirit, is created. The spirits of angels are created, and so are the spirits of demons. All are created. Only one is uncreated: the Holy Spirit, because He is God. Concerning the wind, what does Holy Scripture say? “With a violent spirit You will shatter the ships of Tarshish,” it says in the Psalms, in Psalm 47.
With a violent spirit—that is, with a violent wind—You will shatter the ships of Tarshish, a city of Spain; that is, the ships belonging to the city of Tarshish. Do you see how they will be shattered? By a violent spirit, meaning a gale-force wind.
“As a tree in a forest is shaken by the wind,” and, “Fire and hail, snow and ice, the spirit of the storm.” Pay attention to the phrase: “a tree in a forest.”
“It is shaken by the wind.” This is in Isaiah; that is, the tree is moved by the wind. A tree in the forest will be moved by the wind. And again, what is said here appears in Psalm 148, but also in Daniel, in the Ode—that is, in the prayer of the Three Holy Youths: “Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind.” “Stormy wind” means a wind accompanied by a storm. Concerning good teaching, the Lord Himself says—here the word “spirit” has yet another meaning: good teaching—“The words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and they are life.” This is written in the Gospel according to John. The words I have spoken to you, He says, are spirit and life.
Saint Cyril notes: “That is, they are spiritual.” Instead of saying, “The words I have spoken to you are spiritual,” He says, “They are spirit”; that is, they are good teaching. “But the Holy Spirit is not something uttered by the tongue; He is living and grants the ability to speak wisely. He Himself is the One who speaks and converses.” That is the point. The Holy Spirit, he says, is not something spoken by the tongue, but He is living and speaks. He is not spoken; He speaks. What does this mean? Pay attention. “He grants the ability to speak wisely.” He is Himself the One who speaks and converses. I would like to explain this to you.
The Holy Spirit is not an object, but the acting subject. This is what Saint Cyril means here. He is not spoken; He speaks. We say, “The Greek language is spoken.” This means that it is an object: the Greek language is spoken. The Holy Spirit is not spoken, but speaks. And this means that He is the acting subject, not an object. Why is He the subject? Because He lives; that is, He is a person. He is a person. “And do you wish,” he says in paragraph fourteen, “to know that He converses and speaks?” Do you wish to learn that the Holy Spirit converses and speaks?
At an angel’s revelation, Philip went down to the road leading to Gaza. An Ethiopian eunuch was passing along it, and “the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go near and join yourself to this chariot.’” What did the Holy Spirit say to Philip? First, an angel appeared to him and said, “Arise and go toward the south, to the road”; that is, southward. When he reached a certain point, a chariot was passing along that road. Then the Holy Spirit came and spoke into his ear, saying, “Go near and join yourself to this chariot.” Go and attach yourself—hold fast—to this chariot, to this carriage. Who said this? The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit. It is also said that Saint Basil the Great wrote things inspired by God, and that once, while he was writing...
As he sat writing at his table, some people saw a dove—the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove—resting here upon his shoulder, with its little head inclined toward his ear. This signified that the Holy Spirit was speaking to Saint Basil the Great. But the Holy Spirit always speaks to the Saints. He is not spoken; He speaks, because He is a person, and as a person He is the One who converses and speaks. Saint Cyril then continues: “You see the Spirit speaking to one who hears.” You see that the Holy Spirit speaks to the one who listens. And Ezekiel says, “Thus the Spirit of the Lord came upon me and said to me...”
“Thus says the Lord.” The Spirit came and said to me, “Thus says the Lord.” And again, in Antioch, the Holy Spirit said to the Apostles, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” You see the living Spirit, setting apart, calling, and sending forth with authority—with authority. The Holy Spirit says, “Set apart for Me Paul and Barnabas.” He sets them apart: “Set them apart for Me.” You see how the Holy Spirit sets apart, how He speaks, how He calls, and how He sends forth with authority. Why? Because He is a person. He is the Holy One; He is the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. But, my beloved, we shall continue, God willing.

«Ἄλλον διδάσκει νηστεύειν καὶ ἀσκεῖν». Άλλον, λέει, τον διδάσκει, να νηστεύει και να ασκείται. Νομίζετε ότι είναι του καθενός να μπορεί να νηστεύει παρατεταμένα; Δεν είναι του καθενός. Έτσι, υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που αγαπάνε τη νηστεία και παίρνουν το χάρισμα από το Πνεύμα το Άγιο να μπορούν να νηστεύουν και παρατεταμένα, αλλά και να ασκούνται, διότι η άσκηση έχει μια μεγάλη κλιμάκωση. Όλοι δεν μπορούν να αντέξουν την ίδια, θα λέγαμε, άσκηση. Αλλά κάπου θα βρεθούν, σε κάποιο σημείο θα βρεθούν που θα ασκούνται. Διότι, με τον τρόπον αυτόν, όταν δείτε κάποιον ασκητή που να μένει κλεισμένος σε μια τρύπα και εκεί χρόνια ολόκληρα να μένει με ένα παξιμαδάκι κάθε δύο-τρεις μέρες, μπορείς να το κάνεις εσύ; Θα έλεγα, εγώ δεν μπορώ να το κάνω. Το κάνει εκείνος. Πώς μπορεί να το κάνει;
στην Πρώτη προς Κορινθίους, στο 12ο κεφάλαιο. Τι λέγει; «Ἑκάστῳ δὲ δίδοται», λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος, «ἡ φανέρωσις τοῦ Πνεύματος πρὸς τὸ συμφέρον». Ώστε λοιπόν η φανέρωση —ποια είναι αυτή η φανέρωση;— αυτό το δώρο που θα δώσει κάνει φανερό τον δότη, το Πνεύμα το Άγιον, και δίδει ό,τι το Πνεύμα το Άγιον κρίνει, εφόσον θα είναι διά το συμφέρον του ανθρώπου. Εάν, επί παραδείγματι, ο Θεός, που ξέρει την καρδιά του καθενός, δει μέσα στην καρδιά μου να έχω υπερηφάνεια, θα μου δώσει ποτέ το χάρισμα ιάσεως ασθενών ή απελάσεως δαιμόνων; Ποτέ. Γιατί;
Κάνω εγώ μία ίαση, μία θεραπεία, και θεραπεία ενός αρρώστου, και μέσα μου δεν έχω κάθαρση καρδιάς, δηλαδή η καρδιά μου είναι ακάθαρτη, δηλαδή είναι γεμάτη από υπερηφάνεια. Τότε δεν θα πέσω στον μέγιστον πειρασμό να νομίζω ότι είμαι κάτι; Και πώς θα ήταν δυνατόν το Πνεύμα το Άγιο να μου δώσει κάτι που αυτό το κάτι θα με κατεδίκαζε; Θα δίνατε εσείς στα χέρια ενός πολύ μικρού παιδιού σας, δύο ετών, να παίζει με ένα μαχαίρι καλά ακονισμένο; Θα δίνατε ποτέ στα χέρια ενός παιδιού σας ένα κουτί σπίρτα, μικρού παιδιού πέντε χρονών; Θα του δίνατε ένα κουτί σπίρτα και να του πείτε: «Γιαννάκη μου, παίξε με τα σπίρτα. Εγώ θα λείψω κάνα δυο ώρες από το σπίτι και παίξε με τα σπίρτα»; Θα το κάνετε αυτό;
Λοιπόν, το Πνεύμα το Άγιο θα έδινε κάτι που θα ήταν ζημία για τον άνθρωπο; Γι' αυτό λέγει εδώ «πρὸς τὸ συμφέρον». Θα δώσει χάρισμα, αλλά αυτό το χάρισμα θα είναι, πρώτον, διά το συμφέρον εκείνου που θα έχει το χάρισμα. Λέω αυτόν πρώτον και, δεύτερον, διά το συμφέρον της Εκκλησίας. «ᾯ μὲν γὰρ διὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος δίδοται λόγος σοφίας, ἄλλῳ δὲ λόγος γνώσεως κατὰ τὸ αὐτὸ Πνεῦμα, ἑτέρῳ πίστις». Ξέρετε ότι η πίστις είναι δώρον και ότι όλοι οι άνθρωποι δεν είναι άξιοι γι' αυτό το δώρον. Διότι λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος: «Οὐ πάντων ἡ πίστις». Δεν είναι για όλους η πίστις. Αλλά εδώ όμως περί ποίας πίστεως πρόκειται;
και ενεργούν από το Πνεύμα του Θεού ή από πονηρά πνεύματα;
εκεί στην Σύνοδο έκανε ένα θαύμα μπροστά στα μάτια του Αρείου, για να τον πείσει ότι ο Χριστός είναι Θεός. Ότι ο Χριστός είναι Θεός. Αλλά θα σας πω ένα άλλο θαύμα του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνος, ο οποίος και εκείνος μετείχε στην Πρώτη Οικουμενική Σύνοδο, και που το ξέρετε όλοι αυτό το θαύμα του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνος· είναι πιο γνωστό. Για να πείσει τον Άρειον, επήρε μία κεραμίδα, τη ζούληξε, και τότε η κεραμίδα έβγαλε νερό και έτρεξε προς τα κάτω και έβγαλε φωτιά και πήγε προς τα πάνω. Και λέγοντας ο Άγιος Σπυρίδων με αυτό το θαύμα ότι: «Είδες;» Ο Άγιος Αχίλλιος έβγαλε λάδι. Είδες; Είδες;
«Κάποιος», λέει, «είναι εδώ ο οποίος, δεν ξέρω, κάτι συμβαίνει, μας εμποδίζει». Αγαπητοί μου, όταν κανείς ύψωσε τον Τίμιο Σταυρό, όταν έλεγε «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ελέησον ημάς, Υπεραγία Θεοτόκε, σώσον ημάς», σας ερωτώ: αν ήταν από το Πνεύμα του Θεού, θα εμποδιζόταν από την επίκληση του Αγίου Ονόματος του Χριστού; Αυτό τι σημαίνει; Σημαίνει ότι αυτά τα θαύματα είναι ενεργούμενα, χωρίς αμφιβολία, από τον διάβολο, από τον σατανά. Παρακαλώ πάρα πολύ, προσέξατε αυτό. Είδατε πόσο επιμένω; Γιατί η πλάνη είναι πολύ κοντά, είναι πάρα πολύ κοντά. Έτσι, τι θα πει τώρα το χάρισμα της διακρίσεως, για να ξαναγυρίσω στον Άγιο Κύριλο;
Πριν ο Δαβίδ, ξέρω εγώ, χρισθεί, βασιλεύσει και τα λοιπά, του δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να σκοτώσει τον Σαούλ. Όταν πήγε να κοιμηθεί μέσα σε ένα σπήλαιο, καταδιώκων τον Δαβίδ, και εκεί οι σύντροφοί του, οι οποίοι ήσαν εις το βάθος του σπηλαίου... Και ξέρετε, άμα μπαίνουμε σε ένα σπήλαιο δεν βλέπουμε τίποτα, γιατί είναι σκοτεινό. Ενώ εκείνος που είναι στο βάθος του σπηλαίου βλέπει τι γίνεται στο στόμιο του σπηλαίου. Έτσι λοιπόν ο Σαούλ, ψάχνοντας για τον Δαβίδ με στρατό πολύ, πήγε να κοιμηθεί σε αυτή τη σπηλιά, στην είσοδο της σπηλιάς. Επίσης εκοιμήθη και του λέγουν οι σύντροφοί του: «Κοίταξε, ο Θεός», λέγει, «σου έριξε στα χέρια σου τον Σαούλ». Να έχει εδώ μια ευκαιρία, να σας πω, θα εξελαμβάνετο θαύμα αυτό. Είδες;
