Summary
Saint Cyril examines heretical teachings about the Holy Spirit so that catechumens can recognize and avoid blasphemous errors. Only the ceremonial law was abolished through Christ’s sacrifice, while the moral law was fulfilled and deepened rather than discarded. The lecture introduces Montanus, Maximilla, and Priscilla, condemning their ecstatic false prophecy, Montanus’s claim to embody the Holy Spirit, and the abuses attributed to Montanism.

Beloved, we are continuing with the book of Saint Cyril, studying his catechetical lectures—these wonderful lectures of his—and we have reached the seventh paragraph of the sixteenth lecture. Good. Saint Cyril’s subject is the Holy Spirit. Last time, we said that Saint Cyril, as he himself tells us, also wants to examine the negative side of this subject: what the heretics said about the Holy Spirit. His purpose is precisely to help his catechumens avoid falling into the same errors and finding themselves blaspheming against the Holy Spirit, for which, of course, they would have no forgiveness. So, for a little while longer—perhaps today and perhaps next time as well—he will speak to us about the positions of the heretics, specifically concerning the Holy Spirit. Afterward, he will tell us many other things in a different manner, speaking about the Holy Spirit from the source of Holy Scripture: how the Holy Spirit is revealed and what testimony the Word of God Himself gives concerning Him. So, the seventh paragraph.
Let the Marcionists also be rejected.
They removed from the New Testament the words taken from the Old Testament. For Marcion, that most godless man, was the first to do this, claiming that otherwise there would be three gods. Knowing that the New Testament contains the testimony of the prophets concerning Christ, he cut those testimonies out of the New Testament.
So that the King might remain without testimony.
Let the Marcionists also be rejected—those who removed the passages of the Old Testament that had been included in the New. Marcion, that most godless man, was the first to do this. He used the claim that otherwise we would have three gods. He knew that the testimony of the prophets concerning Christ is found in the New Testament; therefore, by cutting out the testimony of the prophets, he left Christ the King without testimony establishing His identity. Let us examine this, my beloved, because it is extremely important.
As I told you on a previous occasion, Marcion was a Gnostic. Indeed, he is counted among the Gnostics who bore a Christian veneer, because Gnostics appear under many different guises. Simon Magus had a Jewish veneer. Others have a Hermetic veneer, derived from Hermes Trismegistus, as do modern Theosophy and Freemasonry, because their teaching and its foundations are Gnostic, and so forth. What Marcion did, then, was to take the New Testament and remove from it every passage drawn from the Old Testament.
Why did he do this? Because all Gnostics are dualists; that is, they believe in two first principles. As a rule, this is true of them all. We might call it a common characteristic of every Gnostic system. A dualist, then, accepts two first principles, or two gods. As I told you previously, they say that the creator of the world is the God of the Old Testament. And because matter is supposedly evil and sinful—the source of evil—they conclude that God the Creator, the God of the Old Testament, is evil, whereas the God of the New Testament is good. Therefore, they say, we must remove from the New Testament all the passages that belong to the Old.
His argument was as follows. Saint Cyril calls him “most godless” because anyone who thinks he can interfere with the Godhead and cut it down to size is, in the end, a godless man. Marcion was fundamentally opposed to the Holy Trinity. He believed that if we accept God the Creator in the Old Testament, Christ as God in the New Testament, and the Holy Spirit as God, then we have three gods. This is the fundamental error of all the anti-Trinitarian heretics, all those who set themselves against the dogma of the Holy Trinity.
God is one, but there are three Persons. I have spoken to you about this before, again and again. Nor should we imagine that the Father appears as the Father in the Old Testament, as the Son in the New Testament, and as the Holy Spirit in the Church. Such ideas are heretical. Sabellius taught this, among other things. God is one: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are distinct Persons. God is not one Person who merely changes roles. Some claim this in an attempt to preserve monotheism and to answer the accusation that Christianity accepts three gods—an accusation also made against us by the Muslims, that is, by Muhammad and those who came after him, his followers.
They say that we accept three gods and are therefore polytheists. Such claims are fanciful, because they have failed to understand the dogma of the Holy Trinity. To understand this dogma, which is a Mystery, one must possess great humility. For what is heresy? Let me give you a definition. What is heresy? It is the attempt to interpret dogma by human logic. The moment you begin trying to explain a dogma through reason alone, you have automatically entered the realm of heresy. Automatically! So Marcion removed from the New Testament the passages taken from the Old Testament. But what could the result possibly be?
Jesus Christ was left without the testimony establishing His identity. For what tells us who the Person of Jesus Christ is? Nothing other than the Old Testament. When Christ said to the Pharisees and scribes, “Search the Scriptures,” and explained that the Scriptures bear witness to Him, He meant that the Scriptures establish the identity of Jesus Christ. And which Scriptures? The Old Testament. Again, when the Lord was questioned by the Pharisees about who He was, He answered them with Psalm 109—that is, from the Old Testament. What did He say?
Indeed, He challenges them to a discussion and asks them to explain: “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.’” And what does the Lord say there? David spoke these words in the Holy Spirit. Here, then, we see how the Holy Spirit speaks in the Old Testament: He speaks through the prophets. And the Lord’s argument comes from the Old Testament. Who is this Lord who speaks to another Lord? David calls them both Lord: “The Lord said to my Lord.” In other words, the Lord, the Father, said to my Lord, the Son, “Sit at My right hand until…” and so forth. Ah! At that point the Pharisees had no answer. They could not reply.
This is a messianic psalm. If I remove it from the New Testament, where it is recorded because Christ Himself posed this question, then who is Christ? An unknown person; I do not know who He is. So we see that removing the Old Testament leaves Jesus Christ without witness—that is, without testimony. Here I would like to say just one very important thing: do those who attack the Old Testament in our own time understand what a sacrilege they are committing? How many times have I spoken about this? And what about those who continually protest, “Why do you refer to matters from the Old Testament?” We cannot do otherwise, because the Old Testament is Holy Scripture. It is Holy Scripture. Only the ceremonial law has been abolished. In other words, we no longer sacrifice lambs, because the Lamb of God has come. He is the Son of God, Christ, who became man and was sacrificed. There is no longer any need for the antitypes—the typological foreshadowings—because we now possess the prototype, Christ Himself, whom they prefigured. Thus, only the ceremonial law was abolished. The moral law was completed and brought to fullness. When the Lord says, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you…,” what is He doing? He is not abolishing the commandment, “You shall not commit adultery.” What does He do? He brings it to fullness: “Everyone who looks at a woman with lust…” and so forth. You see, therefore, that the Old Testament cannot be abolished.
We discussed on a previous occasion, in response to a question, all these claims that the Old Testament supposedly belongs to the Zionists. You remember. Well, as Karagiozis says, “The eye hurts, so he takes out the eye; the tooth hurts, so he cuts off the head.” What does that mean? Because the Zionists supposedly follow the Old Testament—and they do not, as I explained previously when answering your questions—must we therefore throw away the Old Testament? Even supposing that the Zionists misuse the Old Testament, should we throw the Old Testament away? Did not Annas and Caiaphas, who were serving as high priests, misuse the Old Testament? What did Caiaphas do when the Lord spoke to him of Daniel’s vision and prophecy? He tore his garments and rejected the interpretation. What else did Caiaphas say? “It is expedient that one man should die for the people.”
This was a prophecy—a prophecy that he uttered unwillingly, against his own will. John the Evangelist tells us that, as high priest and by virtue of his office, Caiaphas prophesied that it was indeed expedient for the one Man to die for the many. Yet this, like the Cross, had already been recorded in the Old Testament. Did the Sadducees not misinterpret the Old Testament? The high priest was a Sadducee; both Annas and Caiaphas were Sadducees. They did not accept the whole Old Testament. They did not accept angels, nor did they accept the resurrection of the dead. Because they misused the Old Testament, does that make it useless? Of course not! As I told you when that question was raised, the Zionists do not base themselves on the Old Testament; and if they make some use of it, they always use it as they see fit, according to their own judgment.
They publish a magazine in Athens called Chronika. It does, of course, contain certain sayings from the Old Testament, references to the Law, and so forth. But in essence, they do not base themselves on the Old Testament. Where, then, do the Zionists whom you mention base their teaching? On the Kabbalah, which consists of Jewish traditions—not all Jewish traditions, but a particular body of them. The Talmud also consists of traditions, but it is not the Kabbalah. Let me explain more clearly. The Talmud contains traditions of the rabbis that in no way accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah. In no way at all. Indeed, if you wish to know…
It contains insults directed against the Person of Christ and against the Theotokos (God-bearer). I do not want to repeat them to you. I truly shudder at the thought of letting your ears hear such things—terrible blasphemies against God. These are taken from the Talmud. Yes, the Kabbalah is nothing other than a collection of Jewish traditions, Gnostic traditions, and magical traditions. It is a mixture—a real jumble. This is what those people base themselves on. Let me give you an example of how they interpret the Old Testament. Listen, because it is especially significant. You may ask how I know this. They published it in their magazine, Chronika. That is where I found it. Listen. They say that the Messiah is not one particular person.
After all, two thousand years before Christ have passed, and another two thousand years after Christ. When, then, will these people—this nation—finally see a better day? Will they wait another four thousand years for the Messiah? So they revised the interpretation that the Messiah is a person, even though the Old Testament cries aloud that He is a person—truly cries it aloud. Read what it says about the Messiah, the Servant of the Lord, and so forth. It cries aloud! But no, they say, the Servant of the Lord is not a person; He is a people. The Messiah is Israel, the Israelites, the people of Israel. That, they say, is the Messiah. And now this Messiah, they say, will be liberated as a nation—always understood in national terms—
from the influence of other nations by becoming ruler of the world. Hence the Zionists’ aspirations to world dominion. Do you see how they interpret the Old Testament? But how is the Old Testament to blame? I will say it once again: “The tooth hurts, so he cuts off the head.” Let us be careful, then, I beg you. I do not mean you—you are careful—but let those farther away who attack the Old Testament hear these things. Unless—and I greatly fear this—the cause is not always ignorance. There may be a deliberate purpose to strike at Christianity. This is precisely what Saint Cyril says here: they want to leave the Person of Jesus Christ without testimony, without witnesses. And if He is left without testimony—
then, with a single puff, the Person of Christ is blown away. But the Person of Christ cannot be blown away with a single puff, because He has the firm foundation of the prophets in the Old Testament.
I also wanted to say something about that word, “Let them be hated.” Saint Cyril will repeat it again and again. I would like to explain it to you, but since he himself gives an explanation a little further on, we will not discuss it today. He addresses it toward the end of the tenth paragraph, so I shall leave the word aside for now. In any case, do not misunderstand it and think, “We must hate.” Let me remind you of a verse from the Psalms: “I hated them with perfect hatred.” I hated them with perfect hatred. “Perfect hatred” means that in my heart I will not yield even one percent. That is what it means. But what this refers to and what it is directed against—
we shall now explain. Let me say something more, so that you may see what this perfect hatred means and not misunderstand it, because it is not hatred of people. In the Apocalypse, the Lord says to one of the seven bishops of Asia Minor, one of the seven angels, who were bishops: “But this good thing you have: you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.” Take care: He does not say, “You hate the Nicolaitans,” but, “You hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans.” Therefore, the hatred is not directed against people, but against—
people’s teachings or their deeds. I believe there is a great difference. I say this beforehand so that you will not be scandalized by the repeated phrases, “Let the Marcionites be hated; let the Gnostics be hated,” and so forth. Let us go a little further: “Let the aforementioned Gnostics be hated—Gnostics in name, but filled with ignorance—who dared to say things about the Holy Spirit which I myself do not dare to utter.” He says, then, let those mentioned earlier, whom we previously discussed, the Gnostics, be hated. For if you remember, last time we referred, as I see in the preceding paragraph, to the Valentinians—
the impious Mani, and the others. Saint Cyril will speak of Mani again a little further on. All these people, he says, are Gnostics only in name; that is, they supposedly possess knowledge, but in reality they are filled with ignorance. Therefore, my beloved, I shall say it once again: beware of these Gnostics whom we also have here in Larissa. Be very, very careful. Never say out of curiosity, “I will go and see what these people are saying.” You will enter a circle from which I do not know whether you will be able to escape. All the circles of Satan are closed. The realm of God is never closed. If you enter the realm of the Holy Spirit and then no longer wish to remain—
you may leave; you may leave. Indeed, let me tell you something more: before you yourself depart, the Holy Spirit has already departed from you. To possess the Spirit of God, my brother, certain conditions are required. The Holy Spirit asks for refinement in a person, if I may put it that way, using a human expression. If your sitting room is filthy, covered in cobwebs, unswept, and full of foul odors, your guest, the Holy Spirit, will not remain. If there is a stench within you, if you are not the fragrance of Christ, the Holy Spirit does not remain. You must become the fragrance of Christ. The phrase “the fragrance of Christ” comes from the New Testament; the Apostle Paul uses it. It means the scent of Christ. If the Holy Spirit does not perceive—
the fragrance of Christ within you—if you do not believe in the divine-human Person of Christ, accept all that Christ said and brought to us, and live according to Christ’s commandments—then the Holy Spirit will not take up His dwelling within your being. Otherwise, He departs. Thus, there is no need for you to leave if you do not like it; He has already departed before you. In demonic realms, however, things are different. What can I tell you? You know what happens to someone caught in demonic snares who wishes to escape. Sorcerers are a particularly striking example. The devils do not allow them to leave. What happens if a sorcerer comes to metanoia, to repentance?
The devil pursues him and beats him. I once read the following account in a collection of sayings of the Sinai Fathers. A certain young man was extremely dissolute—very dissolute indeed. At some point he awakened spiritually, desired to live a spiritual life, and went to dwell inside a tomb.
Do not imagine those tombs as graves dug into the ground, as they are today. They were vaulted tombs, like the tomb to which Saint Anthony once withdrew. There the demons assailed the young man with dreadful things, because they had lost him. They beat him until he looked dead. Why? Because, my beloved, they had lost him.
And they wanted him back. When God loses someone, does God go and beat him? God reserves punishment for the Day of Judgment, because God is also just—let us not forget that. I have said this so that we may never find ourselves in places or circles belonging to heretics, such as the aforementioned Gnostics, the Protestants, the millennialists, or any other such groups present here in our city. All of them, Saint Cyril says, are filled with ignorance. They possess genuine ignorance, though they bear the name “Gnostics.” And the things they dared to say about the Holy Spirit, I do not dare to utter. We now enter the eighth paragraph, which says:
“Let the Cataphrygians be hated, and Montanus, the ringleader of evils.” Let the heresy of the Phrygians also be hated—I shall explain it further on—and Montanus, who introduced this heresy. The expression used is “the Cataphrygians.” Phrygia, as you know, was a province, a region of Asia Minor. It lay somewhat inland rather than on the coast, and there the heresy of Montanus was established. We shall speak about him shortly.
The Fathers called them simply the Cataphrygians. By this they meant the heresy among the Phrygians, which had developed in the region of Phrygia. Who was Montanus? First, Saint Cyril calls him “the ringleader of evils,” the one who stood at the head of evil. He continues: “And his two supposed prophetesses.” Pay close attention. I shall offer as thorough an analysis of Montanus as I can, because he was the ancestor and forerunner of many heretical movements and tendencies. Pay attention, then. His two supposed prophetesses were Maximilla—
and Priscilla—Priscilla. This was obviously not the Priscilla of Holy Scripture; they merely shared the same name, since we are speaking of a time many years later. “For this Montanus, beside himself and frenzied”—that is, Montanus had lost his senses and was truly frenzied, truly mad. “For he would not have said these things had he not been mad”—put that in parentheses. He could not have said the things he said unless he were a madman. Not mad in the psychiatric sense, but mad in the sense that the demons had made his mind their dwelling place.
That is the meaning: he uttered frenzied, mad, outrageous things. “He dared to say that he himself was the Holy Spirit, this most wretched man, filled with every impurity and wantonness. Let this suffice, for the sake of modesty and because of the women present.” He dared to say that he was the Holy Spirit—that is, the incarnation of the Holy Spirit, just as the incarnation of the Word was Jesus Christ. Imagine that! This most wretched man, filled with impurity and wantonness, who…
who… Saint Cyril says, “What more can I tell you? Let this suffice.” What I have said in describing him is enough. “To speak briefly”—that is, to express it only in general terms, because women were present and for the sake of modesty, as Saint Cyril says. “And having seized Pepuza, a very small town in Phrygia, and falsely named it Jerusalem, slaughtering wretched little children of women and cutting them to pieces for unlawful consumption…” He says that after taking possession, so to speak, of a tiny village in Phrygia called Pepuza, Montanus falsely named it Jerusalem, “slaughtering wretched little children of women and cutting them to pieces for unlawful consumption.”
“Under the pretext of what they called Mysteries; for this reason, until recently, during the persecutions, we were viewed with suspicion because of the Montanists, who were falsely called Christians and bore the same name as we did. He dared to call himself the Holy Spirit, this man filled with every impiety and inhumanity, whose condemnation admits no defense.” There, Saint Cyril says—to explain it simply beforehand—they would take small children and slaughter them. The text says “slaughtering,” as I shall show you shortly, and “cutting them to pieces,” supposedly consuming them unlawfully. They ate these children, claiming that they were performing Mysteries. Therefore, Saint Cyril says, when persecution broke out against the Christians, because these people called themselves Christians, we were accused of slaughtering and eating little children. This accusation is well known: Christians were said to slaughter a small child and eat it in one of their gatherings. They were accused, we might say, of holding Thyestean banquets—sacrificing human beings, even children—and of engaging in Oedipal unions: a mother with her son, a father with his daughter, committing orgies. This is what the pagans accused the Christians of doing. But these things belonged to the Montanists, and they branded us, to put it simply, with the same stigma.
They called themselves Christians, but they were not Christians. “And he dared,” Saint Cyril says, “this man filled with every impiety and inhumanity, whose condemnation admits no defense,” to call himself the Holy Spirit. He dared to say that he was the incarnation of the Holy Spirit. Let us now consider a few things about Montanus, my beloved, because they are very useful to us. Further on Saint Cyril will speak about Mani, another heretic. He too was a major heretic and the ancestor, we might say, of certain conditions that still exist today, just as Montanus was. What, then, was Montanus? First of all, Montanism was a heresy of the second century.
The second century. Saint Cyril lived in the middle of the fourth century. Montanus was formerly a priest of Cybele, a deity resembling the Greek goddess Demeter, who was worshiped in Asia Minor. Note that Cybele had mysteries, just as Demeter had mysteries at Eleusis—the mysteries of Demeter and Kore, that is, Persephone—and just as there were Orphic mysteries in Thrace. So too there were the mysteries of Cybele.
The mysteries of Cybele involved the deification of the earth. Indeed, these mysteries of Cybele were preserved even in the traditions of…
pay attention here—the Turkish dervishes. They performed ecstatic dances and stabbed themselves, injuring themselves and becoming truly frenzied. In this self-injury and the frenzy of their wild dances, these poor people believed that they were being divinized and united with God—that God took possession of them. This survived within Islam as a remnant of the worship of Cybele. A dreadful thing!
Montanus, then, had been a priest of Cybele. He came to believe in Christ and was baptized. Yet, just like Simon Magus, he believed that he was an instrument of the Holy Spirit. He was marked by a claim to prophecy. Of course, this frenzy is something else; there is an immense fascination in presenting oneself as a prophet and wonderworker. How many times have I told you this! A sorcerer does not easily leave his craft, not only because the devil does not allow him to depart, but also because a certain fascination exerts its power within him. And do not forget: what does “fascination” mean? Enchantment—magic.
The sorcerer casts a spell. That fascination, that attraction, is no small thing. Suppose I present myself as someone who works miracles or possesses the gift of prophecy, so that people pay attention to me—is that a small thing? Is it? It is a terrible thing, my beloved, truly terrible! Of course, genuine miracles exist, and genuine prophecy exists. But when someone becomes fascinated with appearing to be a miracle-worker or a prophet, he is simply harmed. He has entered the realm of delusion. And this Montanus would fall into ecstasy. He had those two prophetesses. If you have access to a suitable encyclopedia, look up the entry on “Montanus,” and you will find many things there. He had these two supposed prophetesses—as you heard Saint Cyril call them—Maximilla and
Priscilla. They were strange women, completely under the influence of Satan, and they prophesied and spoke on and on. What did that wretched man Montanus say? He said that God spoke through him. He also taught that the three Persons alternated with one another, the very thing Sabellius taught much later. That is why I told you that he was a forerunner of the Monarchians. The Monarchians were heretics who supposedly wished to preserve a single principle and therefore did away with
the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. They said that the Holy Trinity was only one Person, and nothing more. Furthermore, since he was essentially a Monarchian, he maintained that Christ had only one nature and only one divine uncreated energy, nothing more. And because he said that Christ had only one nature, he was also a forerunner of Monophysitism. Here, my beloved, we shall be alarmed: Montanus was also a forerunner of the Pentecostals.
They were under the influence of the evil spirit.
And the Pentecostals too are under the influence of the evil spirit; there can be no dispute about it. Yes, they are under the influence of the evil spirit. Sadly, yes. For what do the Pentecostals have? They have this phenomenon of prophesying. Indeed, they regard it as proof that they possess the Holy Spirit. I had a fellow student—she is now a cardiologist, a physician—who was led astray by the CHOE, that is, the Pentecostals,
the Pentecostals here in Larissa. You know this; do not forget it. I am always warning you, so be careful. Read Father Ignatios’s booklet The Spirit of Delusion, and you will learn a great deal. She told me that they teach that if you do not speak in a foreign tongue—that is, if you do not have glossolalia—you do not have the Holy Spirit. I do not mean a foreign language in the sense that I attended an English institute and learned English. I mean the things they utter at their gatherings, which they claim are inspired by the Holy Spirit. If you do not speak in tongues, they say, if you do not possess the gift of glossolalia, then you cannot have the Holy Spirit. In other words, you are deprived of the Holy Spirit. What am I to do with her? What can I say to her? Nothing persuades her. I want to help her, but these people do not easily leave the heresy, because this fascination holds them fast.
What does it mean, my dear friend, for me to possess the gift of glossolalia? Do you know what that means? And yet the Apostle Paul says that glossolalia was a gift of a temporary character. The Apostle Paul himself says this, an Apostle of the first generation. Yes. What delusion these people are in! So when all the emphasis is placed there, on glossolalia and miracles, do you understand what that means? I think you can see for yourselves that this prophesying of Montanus was nothing other than the forerunner of all those manifestations that have appeared throughout history, for they are not limited to our own time. I have
already told you that the manifestations of the modern Pentecostals also have their origin there, in Montanus. Montanism—let me just tell you—no, forgive me, it was Mani who led Saint Augustine astray, but into Manichaeism; we shall come to that shortly. Montanism, the so-called Cataphrygian heresy, spread throughout Asia Minor, Greece, Africa, Italy, and Gaul—not the Galatia of Asia Minor, but what is now France. You understand how widely Montanism had spread. They also accepted the priesthood of both men and women, although they had no ecclesiastical organization.
That was one reason they soon disintegrated. They admitted both men and women to the priesthood. And today, when the Anglican Church and other Protestant offshoots have begun introducing women into the priesthood—you will have read about this matter of women’s ordination in the newspapers—we might say that here too, as always taking the lead in evil, Montanus was a forerunner of women’s ordination. Some groups retained Phrygian pagan customs involving bloodshed. They would take a small child and prick it.
This is what today we would call “piercing with a sharp point,” from the Greek word for a stake or spike. You take a small piece of wood or metal, something pointed. When you begin doing such things to the body, it is called piercing or impaling, and the instrument itself is called a spike—the piece of wood or metal being used. They would pierce the child repeatedly in order to drink its blood in a mystery rite. As I told you, these Phrygian pagan customs had been preserved. We also encounter this in sorcery. Black magic makes use of human blood. Some of these things often come down to us sounding like legends.
When I was a child, people used to tell me, “Do not go out into the street, because the Jews gather up little children.” Perhaps they told us this merely to keep us indoors, just as they would say, “The noonday bogeyman takes little children.” They said that the Jews took the children, slaughtered them, drank their blood, and so forth. My beloved, I do not know how much of these traditions is myth. They should not be treated as evidence against the Jewish people; they reflect old fears surrounding black magic and the ritual use of blood. I do not mean taking a bottle of blood drawn from someone for transfusions and so forth. There is a whole ritual and story surrounding it. And finally, the Montanists were Artotyrites, bread-and-cheese users.
They supposedly lived a very strict life. Christ handed down the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist using wine, saying, “This is My blood.” But because they supposedly lived in strict abstinence and would not drink wine, in place of wine they used bread and cheese when celebrating their false liturgy, or whatever we might call it—for what else could it be? It was false and counterfeit. Because they used bread and cheese, they were called Artotyrites. You see? If I had time to go further, so that you might see that I am not telling tales, I would refer you to the encyclopedia where you can find these things. Indeed, in the encyclopedia of religion, the article was written by Christou, the professor at the
University of Thessaloniki.
I remind you of Perpetua’s vision, for those of you who have read her account. She saw in a vision that she was in heaven, where God appeared as a shepherd with His sheep; He milked them and gave them milk, cheese, and bread. This vision reflects Montanism, for the Montanists were Artotyrites. This shows you what has passed into history from the heretics. Yes, what has passed into history.
Let us leave him and proceed to the next figure, in paragraph nine: “After him came, as was said before, the most impious Mani, who gathered together every evil found in the heresies. Being thus the final pit of perdition, he collected together the teachings of all the heretics and fashioned and taught a new delusion. He even dared to say that he himself was the Paraclete whom Christ had promised to send.” Now we come to Mani. In Greek, his name is declined Mani, Manitos—not Mani, Manou.
He was utterly impious. Saint Cyril says that he gathered together all the earlier heresies that had existed and became the final pit of perdition and destruction. “Having collected together the teachings of all the heretics,” and so forth. After collecting them, he added his own ideas and presented something new, but its foundation consisted of all the heresies that had appeared up to his time. It is worth saying a few things about Mani, since I have spoken to you about him before. I shall not say much, only what is necessary,
so that, if possible, we may finish this subject of Mani in the few minutes remaining. We shall not give the refutation today, because Saint Cyril offers it a little further on: he explains why Mani claimed to be the Holy Spirit and why that claim is, of course, false. He gives a fine argument. It is also an argument against the CHOE, who say that the Holy Spirit now grants greater illumination. I heard this said with my own ears: greater illumination to us—did you hear that?—than to the Apostles. Yes. So pay attention. Mani was a man who thought in Gnostic terms. Fundamentally, they were all Gnostics. He conceived the idea of uniting East and West. More specifically,
he traveled as far as India and adopted Buddhist elements from the religions there. He became acquainted with Christianity, Judaism, and Persian religion. He blended them all together in a syncretistic mixture. He ended up in Persia and established himself there with disciples and so forth, just as Montanus had established himself in a small village. And Manichaeism spread like a fire breaking out in a field, when the wind blows and...
you see how rapidly the flames spread. Manichaeism, my beloved, overtook the entire Christian world. It spread throughout Asia Minor and Persia and reached Constantinople; Manichaean doctrines were still present there as late as the sixth century. All North Africa received Manichaeism, and Saint Augustine later cast it off, as I said. In Europe—Greece, Italy, and wherever else it went—Manichaeism took hold. God forbid that this should mean the Orthodox had disappeared. What was the fundamental idea behind it? Mani thought: Why should Judaism exist, since the Jews did not believe in Christ? Why should Christianity exist, since there are other religions as well? Why should I not unite all these things and make a mixture,
so that everyone could find something of his own in it—a Christian could find Christian elements, a Jew Jewish elements, a Buddhist Buddhist elements, and so on? Now tell me: can you see what Mani was a forerunner of? Forgive me—Mani; yes, I said it correctly. Do you know? Ecumenism. Saint Cyril rightly calls him a collector of all the heresies. What did Father Saint Justin Popovich call Ecumenism? What did he call it? The pan-heresy. It is the gathering together of every heresy, with the central aim of achieving a universal religion. Ecumenism is now attempting to fulfill Mani’s dream.
through Ecumenism, and this is the very plan that the Antichrist will chiefly serve. Ecumenism is the most terrible heresy, threatening everything, while we concern ourselves with our Church and our Orthodoxy. Worse still, many of our clergy, even among our highest-ranking clergy, adhere to ecumenist positions. This is our tragedy, our tragic condition. My beloved, let us take care—let us be exceedingly watchful concerning this modern form known as Ecumenism. Let us take care. Do we imagine that it is not at work? This modern Ecumenism began toward the end of the last century.
At this very moment, it is being advanced by the World Council of Churches. It is being advanced—I will say it once more so that you may hear it—it is being advanced by the World Council of Churches. You understand, then, what we have to struggle against. And now tell me: do the things recorded in history about these founders of heresies not remain relevant in every age, and especially in our own? Be assured, my beloved, that we would not be saying these things if they were merely museum pieces. They are not museum pieces; they are active realities. Would you like to hear more? Do you know who favors this Ecumenism? From their own respective perspectives, Theosophy
and Freemasonry, whose foundation is Theosophy. Yes, Freemasonry favors it as well. Furthermore, all these global movements—these international, internationalist movements—are suspect. Behind these internationalist movements, whether they are commercial, philosophical, or social in character, Ecumenism lies hidden. It is also the plan of the Zionists. As for whether the Zionists have any connection with the Old Testament, you should readily understand the answer. There is hardly any need to say that they have no connection whatsoever with the Old Testament—none at all.
The Old Testament, my beloved, is a hand pointing toward the New Testament—toward the New Testament alone, and toward nothing outside the New Testament. Everything else consists of the deeds and machinations of true Satanists. Let us always be ready, because Ecumenism is in our own courtyard; it is among our own people. There are hierarchs who adhere to ecumenist positions, and theologians who adhere to ecumenist positions. This is nothing new. I believe you read and study; you see these things and discern them. Very great care is needed. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

δεχόμεθα τρεις θεούς και συνεπώς είμεθα πολυθεϊσταί. Αυτά τα πράγματα είναι μυθώδη, γιατί δεν μπόρεσαν να κατανοήσουν το δόγμα της Αγίας Τριάδος. Για να κατανοήσεις αυτό το δόγμα, που είναι μυστήριον, πρέπει να έχεις πολλή ταπείνωση. Διότι τι είναι αίρεσις; Να σας δώσω έναν ορισμό. Τι είναι αίρεσις; Είναι η λογική ερμηνεία του δόγματος. Απ’ τη στιγμή που θα πιάσεις να ερμηνεύσεις λογικά ένα δόγμα, αυτομάτως βρέθηκες εις τον χώρο της αιρέσεως. Αυτομάτως! Λοιπόν, έβγαζε από την Καινή Διαθήκη τα χωρία της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Αλλά το αποτέλεσμα ποιο μπορούσε να είναι;
Έμενε χωρίς την ταυτότητά του ο Ιησούς Χριστός, διότι ποιος μας λέγει περί του προσώπου του Ιησού Χριστού; Δεν είναι παρά η Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Όταν ο Χριστός είπε εις τους Φαρισαίους και τους γραμματείς, τους είπε «ερευνάτε τας γραφάς», αυτό το «ερευνάτε τας γραφάς» που είπε, γιατί αυτές είναι εκείνες που μαρτυράνε για μένα, ήθελε να τους πει ότι οι Γραφές είναι εκείνες που δίνουν —ποιες Γραφές; Η Παλαιά Διαθήκη— που δίνουν την ταυτότητα του Ιησού Χριστού. Και όταν ο Κύριος, ερωτηθείς από τους Φαρισαίους πάλι ποιος είναι, απήντησε με τον 109ο ψαλμό, δηλαδή Παλαιά Διαθήκη, τι είπε;
εις εσέ οσμή Χριστού, πιστεύεις στο θεανθρώπινο πρόσωπο του Χριστού, δέχεσαι ό,τι Εκείνος είπε και έφερε ο Χριστός και ζεις τις εντολές του Χριστού, τότε το Πνεύμα το Άγιον εγκαθιδρύεται μέσα στην ύπαρξή σου. Αλλιώτικα φεύγει. Έτσι, δεν χρειάζεται εσύ να φύγεις αν δεν σου αρέσει, έχει φύγει πιο μπροστά εκείνο. Ενώ στον χώρο των δαιμονικών χώρων τα πράγματα είναι αλλιώτικα. Ξέρετε, τι να σας πω, αυτό ξέρετε, κάποιος που ήταν μέσα σε δαιμονικά δίχτυα και θέλει να φύγει. Μάλιστα, σε έναν πολύ έκτυπο τρόπο είναι οι μάγοι. Δεν τους αφήνουν οι διάβολοι να φύγουν. Να μετανοήσει ο μάγος;
