Summary

Saint Cyril teaches that Christian hope rests in the one Triune God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Incarnation both reveals and veils God in human flesh, forming the central mystery of Christianity and salvation. Saint Cyril therefore approaches the Holy Spirit humbly, describing revealed truth and exposing errors without claiming to comprehend the divine hypostasis fully.

Beloved, we are still studying Saint Cyril’s Catechetical Lectures, in the Sixteenth Catechesis, paragraph four. The subject of this Catechesis is the Holy Spirit. “We who hope in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit do not proclaim three Gods—let the Marcionites be silenced—but with the Holy Spirit, through the one Son, we proclaim one God.” Last time, we spoke about hope and made the following observation.

Christianity itself is called hope. As the Apostle Peter says, “Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that is in us”—to anyone who asks the reason for our hope, that is, for our faith, for our Christianity. But beyond this, our hope is the one God in the Holy Trinity, because He is our salvation. This is why we have that very short prayer: “My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit.” You see why the Father is called our hope: the Father is the person from whom the Son is begotten.

And the Holy Spirit proceeds from Him. Our hope, then, is the Father. Our refuge is the Son, because He became man and suffered—forgive me, I mean He learned—from the things which He suffered.

That is, through what He suffered, He came to know human nature by experience. For He walked upon our earth, was crucified, hungered, and thirsted. He took upon Himself our human nature and therefore knows us, as the Apostle Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Consequently, He is our refuge. And the Holy Spirit is our protection, because He came to...

...brood over the whole creation, so that life might arise from lifeless matter. It is the Holy Spirit who sustains life. And so, like a mother hen, He takes our existence and our life beneath His wings and broods over them, giving warmth, sustaining them, and so forth. The Holy Spirit is the One who abides within the Church, who supports and shelters us. You see how this very, very short prayer gives us a most vivid image of the one God in the Holy Trinity and of the divine persons. “We do not proclaim three Gods.” When we say, however, that our hope is in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we do not mean that we believe in three gods, as even the Jehovah’s Witnesses would like to accuse us of doing...

They say that we are polytheists because we supposedly believe in three gods. That would be a very grave error. Remember that this simple notion—that there are three gods—is what led all the anti-Trinitarian heretics into heresy. We do not have three gods. We have one God: the Father, acting through the Son in the Holy Spirit; or, to put it another way, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one with the Father. With regard to the created order, creation itself, humanity, and salvation, the Father acts through the Son in the Holy Spirit. But we do not have three gods. I told you previously that there is no created analogy at all...

...by which we can comprehend the one God in the Holy Trinity. As I told you, there is no mechanical, chemical, or biological analogy—nothing at all. You cannot say, for example, that He is one body with three heads. Nothing of the kind. Such an image is entirely inappropriate; it is monstrous. There is no example. It is a mystery. Some people, supposedly seeking to preserve monotheism, refused to believe in the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is why the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who follow the ancient anti-Trinitarian heretics, reject the Son. They are therefore fighters against Christ: they oppose the Son and are Arians; and they also oppose the Holy Spirit.

The followers of Macedonius maintained that the Holy Spirit is not a person but merely an energy. I repeat: all these errors arise from human egotism expressed as rationalism—from man’s attempt to interpret the mystery of the Godhead. And there, if you will permit the expression, they stumble. I stumble, slip, and fall into the abyss precisely when I try to interpret what is a mystery and what I can never comprehend. Since I have the God who is known by revelation, and since this God reveals Himself to me as Trinity, every further speculation is unnecessary. The Father reveals the Son at His Baptism and at the Transfiguration.

The Holy Spirit, as the finger of the Father, likewise points to the Son. God Himself spoke—the same God who sent John the prophet on his prophetic mission. John himself said, “He who told me to baptize” sends the Holy Spirit. Saint John explains: “He told me that the One upon whom you see the Holy Spirit descend in the form of a dove is My beloved Son.” And the voice is heard saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” You understand, then, that we know God through revelation, not through human invention. Invention means something I construct with my own mind and reasoning.

The one God in the Holy Trinity is not a human invention; He is known through revelation. Whether I like it or not, this is who He is. What can we do? This is who He is. He is the true God. This is why Saint Cyril says here: “We do not believe in three gods and thus introduce polytheism. No. We do not proclaim three Gods. Let the Marcionites be muzzled and silenced.” Who were these Marcionites? Let me say just a few words. They were the followers of Marcion, the most important of all the Gnostics who gave their teaching a Christian coloring. I have spoken to you many times about Gnosticism.

Marcion, like all the other notorious Gnostics who gave their teaching a Christian coloring, could accept neither Christ as God nor the Holy Spirit, always in an effort to preserve belief in one God. Or, if you prefer, because the Gnostics were generally dualists, they accepted one God in the Old Testament and another God in the New Testament. Indeed. What a dreadful thing: belief in two gods. While trying to explain things and speak of one God, they ended up with two gods. If anyone studies all these things—the history of the heresies—he finds himself in a vast sea. Later we shall speak about Montanus, though perhaps not today.

His was the heresy of the Cataphrygians, so called after Phrygia. Montanus taught some very strange and peculiar things. He claimed to be an incarnation of the Holy Spirit. You understand, then, that the devil is at work everywhere, distorting God in the understanding of human beings. “The faith is indivisible,” says Saint Cyril. Forgive me; the text actually says: “But with the Holy Spirit, through the one Son, we proclaim one God.” We proclaim one God together with the Holy Spirit, the one Son, and the Father. We bear witness to and proclaim one God, because the faith is indivisible. We do not have God the Father...

...with some other God beside Him—the Son—and so forth. These things cannot be divided. “Piety is inseparable.” Piety is another name for Christianity; let me tell you that as well. Christianity has many names, all of which are found in Holy Scripture, in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul says, “Great is the mystery of piety: God was manifested in the flesh.” During our question sessions we asked, “What is the central meaning of Holy Scripture?” And I told you: “The Word became flesh.” Do you remember? If we now had to say it in just five more words—only five more words—the Apostle Paul does so. Listen to how he puts it: “Great is the mystery of piety.” Thus, first of all, Christianity is called piety.

Christianity is itself a mystery, because it comes to reveal mysteries, while also teaching us that these mysteries are revealed and yet remain unsearchable. You may ask, “How can there be both revelation and veiling?” But that is precisely Christianity. We have the revelation of God in the flesh and, at the same time, the veiling of God in the flesh. Do you understand? God is veiled by human flesh, for how could He have appeared otherwise in His human nature? Saint Isaac the Syrian says that, without the veil of the flesh, the fire of the Creator would have been present. And yet we truly have the revelation of God. We have both revelation and veiling. Christianity, then, is a mystery: it comes to reveal mysteries and, at the same time, to give us the proper measure by which to approach...

...the Mystery and the Mysteries. So, “Great is the mystery of piety: God was manifested in the flesh.” That is it. “The Word became flesh.” God “was manifested in the flesh.” This is heavy artillery, my beloved. Since it has come to mind, I shall tell you a story. Many years ago—twenty-three or twenty-four years ago—we had a discussion with some Jehovah’s Witnesses. One of them, a man from Volos, was very well read. When I quoted, “God was manifested in the flesh,” he said to me, “It does not say, ‘God was manifested in the flesh’; it says, ‘who.’”

That is the relative pronoun: omicron-sigma, with a rough breathing and an acute accent—“who was manifested in the flesh.” I already knew this, because, if I remember correctly, the reading “who” is found in the Codex Sinaiticus. Those of you who have a critical edition of the New Testament will find it there: “who was manifested in the flesh.” I said to him, “Yes, yes. But to whom does this relative pronoun ‘who’ refer? To God.” Therefore, the word “God” may be absent and the relative pronoun “who”—meaning “He who”—may stand in its place, and the meaning remains the same.

It is the same thing. But the New Testament we commonly have in our hands—the standard edition in general use—does not have the relative pronoun “who”; it has “God.” I have told you this to equip you, so that if you ever discuss this passage and encounter that objection, you will know the answer. So: “God was manifested in the flesh, seen by angels.” For the first time, God becomes visible to the angels. “He was preached among the nations”—proclaimed to all nations. “He was believed on in the world”—through Pentecost the Holy Spirit confirmed who the Son is. “He was taken up in glory”—He ascended into Heaven. In these few words we have the mystery of the Incarnation, the mystery of God, and the mystery of our salvation. In just a few words. It means the same as “the Word became flesh.” The Word “became flesh.”

“He was believed on through the Spirit; He was preached among the nations.” Well then, beloved, I shall continue.

“We do not divide the Holy Trinity, as some do, nor do we bring about a blending, as Sabellius did.” We do not divide the Holy Trinity, he says. This obstructs my vision a great deal. But what can we do?

I am marking the lines. Now, Saint Cyril says that we do not divide the Holy Trinity, as some do—as all the heretics divide the Holy Trinity. They say that God is not one. But if I remove the Son and the Holy Spirit from the Godhead, then I no longer have the one God who is the Holy Trinity. Nor, he says, do we teach what Sabellius taught, namely a blending together. What does this “blending together” mean? We have spoken about it before, in an earlier Catechesis. It means joining, compressing, and merging the persons. Saint Epiphanios of Cyprus gives the following definition.

He defines this blending together in these words: “So that no one may suppose the Holy Spirit to be blended together with the Son.” In other words, it is a compression of the persons, so that one ends up saying that there are not three persons after all, but only one. The idea is this: God appeared in the Old Testament as one person. All who teach this are anti-Trinitarian and grievous heretics, condemned by the Church. They say that God appeared in the Old Testament in the person of the Father, in the New Testament in the person of the Son, and in the Church in the person of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, they say, there is only one person.

But, they say, He appeared in the forms of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Consequently, we do not truly have the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They compress all these together. This compression, this mingling, is called “blending together,” because it presents what is essentially only one person. This teaching, of course, must be rejected, as I have explained to you. Saint Cyril therefore says that we do not teach this either. “We have reverently seen and know one Father, who sent us His Son as Savior. We have seen one Son, who promised to send us the Comforter from the Father.”

We know one Son, who promised that He would send us the Comforter. “We know the Holy Spirit, who spoke through the prophets and at Pentecost.” This is the one Holy Spirit who spoke through the prophets and descended at Pentecost to illumine the first Church, “descending upon the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire,” and He illumined the Apostles. “Here”—now pay attention to something that is not merely related to our subject but is extremely important, as you will see—“here in Jerusalem, in the upper Church of the Apostles.”

He says that Pentecost took place “in the upper Church of the Apostles.” What is this upper Church? My dear friends, it is the Upper Room, because the disciples had gathered there. It is not “upper” in the sense of being superior in quality. Do not imagine that it was a superior Church and that today we live in an inferior one. It is called the upper Church because the event took place on the upper floor of a house. Did you notice that? It is called the upper Church because it was on the upper floor of a house—the place called the Upper Room in the Book of Acts.

The Upper Room was also the place where the Mystical Supper took place. It is said that on the day of Pentecost the disciples gathered in that same room where the Mystical Supper had been held. That upper chamber—if I remember correctly, Acts calls it the Upper Room. In the Gospels it is called an upper room; both terms mean a floor that is raised above ground level. It may therefore have been the second floor or, if you prefer, the third. In any case, it was not the ground floor. It was not the ground floor, and houses were generally no more than two stories high. Especially in ancient times, if it was also a spacious area—

The Gospels call it “a large furnished upper room.” A large hall on the second floor presented a structural challenge in those days, when reinforced concrete did not exist. How, then, could such a hall have been built on a third floor and still hold 120 people? For 120 people were present on the day of Pentecost. Do you not think that the house was more likely two stories high rather than three? It was certainly not the ground floor. That is why he says, “in the upper Church.” But when he says “in the upper Church,” pay attention to something very important that I mentioned; you will see it shortly.

He says it again a little further on: “Church.” What does he say? Something extremely important. He says: “Here in Jerusalem, here among us, all the privileges belong to us.” What does he mean by “privileges”? Special honors. We here, in the city of Jerusalem, possess all these privileges. And what are they?

In this city, here, Christ descended from heaven. For where was Christ born? In Judea. And do not forget that Bethlehem, where Christ was born, is only a few miles away, southeast of Jerusalem. Bethlehem is only a short distance from Jerusalem. It might even be regarded as a village or a somewhat distant suburb of Jerusalem. Thus he says that it was here that Christ descended from heaven—here. This image of His “descending here” is very striking. If we were to paint the scene, it is as though he were showing us an opening in heaven.

Allow me to put it this way; it is a beautiful image. An opening in heaven, through which the Son of God descended. Jacob saw this opening in a vision when he saw heaven opened. Where and how? At one particular place. Jacob was leaving the Promised Land in self-imposed exile, going to Mesopotamia to find his uncle Laban and so forth. After traveling for two or three days, he lay down to sleep. Of course he slept every night, but two or three days into the journey he lay down with a stone for his pillow. There he saw that astonishing vision: a ladder, he says, standing upon the earth and reaching to heaven.

The ladder touched the earth, angels went up and down its steps, and God, the text says, stood above the ladder in heaven. There, then, heaven had an opening. Remember, it was a vision and a symbol of the descent of God. That ladder is the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), through whom God the Word descended. This is why Saint Cyril uses that beautiful and very vivid image: in this place, he says, Christ descended from heaven, as though an opening had appeared in heaven. As though an opening had appeared—there is no literal opening, of course—at this very point above Jerusalem, which he could see before him.

Do you know what this means? An event. Hold on to this important point: we have an event, the event of the Incarnation. Then he continues: “Here the Holy Spirit descended from heaven,” again in the same city. It is as though the Holy Spirit now comes down to humanity through another opening. Where? Here again, here in Jerusalem. So when the Holy Spirit descended, what did this constitute? An event—not a theory, but an event. What kind of event? One that drew the attention of the entire city, because the sound of a rushing wind was heard.

A wind. Not a leaf was stirring, yet there was the sound of wind, like a violent gale—what we might call a wind of many Beauforts—even though not a leaf moved. The people wondered where this roaring wind was coming from and traced it to a certain house. When they arrived, they saw the Apostles come out, with the Apostle Peter asking, “What have you come out to see?” Amid that mighty sound, the Holy Spirit had come upon the Apostles as tongues of fire, and the noise served as a summons to the peoples gathered in Jerusalem. Peter then delivered his first sermon there. Those who had been hiding in the Upper Room for fear of the Jews received courage and boldness as their first gift.

They were transformed and became new people. They spoke boldly about Christ and worked miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thus the descent of the Holy Spirit was marked by an event. The Incarnation, then, is an event, and the coming of the Holy Spirit is also an event. This is why I told you that our faith consists of events; it is history, not a theory. Many people say, “Are not all religions good? Do they not all contain some truth?” If they contain some truth, they also contain a great deal of falsehood. But the other religions do not come from divine revelation; they are natural religions.

They are religions founded upon human reasoning.

Now do you understand why the Old Testament must stand if the New Testament is to stand? “And in one Holy Spirit, who through the prophets proclaimed Christ; and when Christ had come, descended and revealed Him.”

There is one Father and one Old Testament; there is one Son, who was prophesied in the Old Testament and came in the New.

“It was most fitting that, just as we speak about Christ and Golgotha here at this very Golgotha...” What does “this very” mean? Golgotha itself. Do not forget that Saint Cyril delivered his catechetical lectures inside the Church of the Resurrection, and do not forget that the tomb of Christ was enclosed within that church. Unfortunately, I have not been there myself. Those of you who have gone know the Holy Edicule within the Church of the Resurrection. The church was built there because the tomb of Christ was found there. And the Cross—do not forget that the Crucifixion took place very nearby—stood close to the garden in which the new tomb was located.

All of it was enclosed within the Church of the Resurrection: both Golgotha, where the Cross stood, and the tomb of Christ. Both places were included within it. Thus, when Saint Cyril gave his catechetical lectures to those preparing for illumination inside the Church of the Resurrection, his wording was very striking. I have mentioned another such expression to you before. Here he says, “We speak here at this very Golgotha.” What does “this very” mean? He was standing within the place itself. It was as though Golgotha were right there before them. It was a very small hill, merely a rise in the ground. Later, as I told you, the Precious Cross was found there, the church was built, and so forth. Thus he could say, “Here, at this very Golgotha, we speak.” “In the same way, we also speak about the Holy Spirit in the upper Church.”

Saint Cyril wishes to indicate two places. They are these: with regard to the Incarnation of the Word, we have His Crucifixion in this place, here where we now stand. With regard to the descent of the Holy Spirit, we have that other place, the upper Church—that is, the upper floor, the Upper Room, some distance away. Thus we have two locations. “And because the One who descended there shares in the glory of the One crucified here, we speak here about the One who descended there; for the faith is indivisible.” Just as here, at Golgotha, we have the glory of Christ who was crucified here, and...

The Holy Spirit shares in the glory; and so, in that other place, we have the Holy Spirit glorifying Christ who was crucified. True piety is indivisible. We therefore have two events, one referring to the Son and the other to the Holy Spirit. Events! I underline this, because it is the main point. That is why I told you: our faith comes from divine revelation; it rests upon events. And for this reason, the resurrection of the dead and the Second Coming (Parousia) of Christ will also be events.

Events, not some mere idea. When we speak of resurrection, do we mean that the human spirit rises in the sense that it comes to know new things? No. Or take the moral sense in which the father could say of the prodigal son, “He was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” He was not physically dead; he was dead in a moral sense. But Christianity is not about a moral resurrection. It is about an ontological resurrection, because these are events. Our faith, then, is founded upon facts that can...

...be verified. When the Apostle Paul makes his defense before the council of the Jews—rather, forgive me, before Herod—he tells him that the events he is now speaking about, as he makes his defense there in the Acts of the Apostles, “were not done in a corner.” They did not happen in some little corner of the world, where no one knew about them. They happened in Jerusalem. The whole city, the whole world, was a witness. We would therefore say that our faith was revealed through events—but not events done in a corner. They are not hidden deeds or secret events; they are manifest. This is the great difference. Know this, and say it when people tell you, “Buddhism is also good, and Islam is also good.” No, my dear friends. Every religion outside Christianity is demonic. For if they were not demonic, then...

...Christianity would not be unique, nor would salvation be unique. Christianity is unique, and salvation is unique, because the Savior is unique and God is one. True piety, then, is indivisible. A child in catechism class once wrote to me with a question: “Could it be,” he asked, “that the same God appears under different names—one way in Buddhism, another way in Islam, and another way in Christianity?” A strange question, indeed. Yet it reflects how people today understand Christianity and how they look upon it. My dear friends, God is one. God cannot play games with mankind, appearing now in one way and then in another, especially through supposed revelations filled with error, as is the case with all so-called invented or nature-worshipping religions.

It is more accurate to call them natural religions, because they are products of human invention. No, my dear friends, Christianity is unique. I have said it, I say it now, and I will say it again, because the true God has revealed Himself to mankind. Fifth paragraph: “We wish, then, to say something about the Holy Spirit—not to describe His hypostasis precisely, for that is impossible, but to speak of the various errors into which certain people have fallen concerning Him, lest through ignorance of them we ourselves be carried away; and to block the paths of error, so that we may travel upon the one royal road.” Saint Cyril says that we wish to speak about the Holy Spirit, but certainly not to describe precisely...

...His hypostasis. Hypostasis: within theological language, this word has acquired two meanings. It can mean essence, and it can also mean person. In earlier times, hypostasis meant essence. Later, the term hypostasis also came to designate the person. Let us therefore take it in both senses. We will say nothing about the person of the Holy Spirit beyond what Holy Scripture says, nor much about His essence, of which we are entirely ignorant, because it is the divine essence. No one has ever seen God in His essence, as John the Evangelist says, nor can anyone see Him. We cannot see the divine essence, nor shall we ever see it, unto the ages of ages—not even in eternity. Do you understand...

...how, then, could we possess knowledge of the divine essence? For Saint Cyril says that this is impossible—truly impossible. What, then, shall we do? In order to speak about the Holy Spirit, Saint Cyril follows this method: he refers to the deviations of the heretics and accomplishes two things at once. By referring to their deviations, he shows the errors taught by the heretics; and then what does he do? He restores the matter according to Orthodox teaching, correcting those heretical positions. In this way, one learns the Orthodox teaching concerning the Holy Spirit and, at the same time, learns about the heretics and their distorted doctrines. This is the method Saint Cyril follows.

Naturally, since we have his catechetical lectures before us, we shall follow them and use the same method ourselves. Indeed, he explains why he does this: so that we may not be carried away through ignorance of those teachings, falling into deviations because we do not know the positions of the heretics, but may instead block the paths of error and walk upon the royal road. And what is the royal road? It is Orthodoxy. “If, for the sake of safety, we recount anything said by the heresies, let it recoil upon their own heads, while we remain innocent...”

“...both we who speak and you who listen.” If, he says, we mention and recount something from those heresies that oppose the Holy Spirit, precisely for the sake of safety, then if it should be supposed that...

...we were speaking of things that concern them, let those things fall upon their own heads. But we are innocent—both we who speak and you who listen. In other words, if we refer to deviations and false teachings against the Holy Spirit, let these remain upon the heads of those heretics; meanwhile, both we who speak and you who listen will remain secure. Sixth paragraph: “For the most impious heretics in all things sharpened their tongues against the Holy Spirit and dared to utter unlawful things.” These most impious heretics...

...sharpened their tongues in order to say things that ought never to have been said—things forbidden and unlawful. “As Irenaeus the interpreter wrote in his works: some dared to claim that they themselves were the Holy Spirit, the first among them being Simon, the magician mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles.”

Those who preserved accounts of heretical teachings for us are certainly not very numerous—or, at least, their works have been lost. One of those mentioned by Saint Cyril is Saint Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons. Saint Irenaeus was a very important figure, we might say...

More particularly, because the Gnostics had appeared in his time, he fought against them. Some of his works have survived, including Against Heresies—meaning, of course, against the Gnostics. From that work we also learn what the Gnostic heretics taught, since their own books have not survived. Thus, through the polemical writings of the Fathers of the Church, we learn the teachings of the Gnostic heretics as well. Another Father who preserved accounts of many heresies of his time is Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus. Saint Epiphanius was a contemporary of John Chrysostom. Various historians, such as Eusebius of Caesarea and others, have also preserved heretical teachings for us.

Saint Cyril, then, who lived in the fourth century—this series of his catechetical lectures was delivered in AD 350, in the middle of the fourth century—tells us about these heretics. The first among them was Simon, who is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles: Simon Magus, whom we are presently discussing in our homilies on Acts. He went so far as to claim that he himself was the Holy Spirit—that he was, as it were, the incarnation of the Holy Spirit. “After being cast out, he dared to teach these things.” That is why the Apostle Peter said what he said to him: “I doubt whether you will be saved.”

This was not because God was unwilling to save him, but because Simon himself would persist with a hardened core of unbelief and wickedness in his conscience and in his free disposition. His disposition was evil. “The so-called Gnostics, those impious men, uttered still other things against the Spirit; and the lawless Alembinians said other things again. The impious Mani dared to claim that he himself was the Comforter sent by Christ. Others said that the Spirit in the prophets was one, while the Spirit in the New Testament was another. Great indeed is their error—or rather, their blasphemy.” Let me put all this in my own words. Some, then, were those who said...

...“I myself am the Holy Spirit.” The first to say this was Simon Magus, though a second and a third made the same claim after him. Another category of heretics consisted of the Gnostics, whom Saint Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, opposed, as I told you. They said many things, including this—pay attention to this point—that the Comforter in the Old Testament is one, while the Comforter in the New Testament is another: one Holy Spirit there and another Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Do you see what can happen to those who separate the New Testament from the Old Testament, as we discussed last time?

Without realizing it, they may fall into the false teaching of the Gnostics. For who spoke through the prophets in the Old Testament? The Holy Spirit. The Apostle Peter says clearly that holy men spoke what they spoke through the Holy Spirit. Christ Himself said this—the Lord Himself—when He said that David, in the Holy Spirit...

...declared, “The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand,” and so forth. Do you see? He spoke in the Holy Spirit. So which Holy Spirit was that? Was He one Spirit, while the Spirit who descended upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost in the New Testament was another? Is He another Spirit? This is inevitably what happens to those who wish to separate the New Testament from the Old Testament. The Christianizing Gnostics separated the New Testament from the Old Testament.

They did not accept God as Creator, because they regarded matter as evil. This is what dualism means. Consequently, they believed that the god of matter—the god of evil—had to be opposed. Therefore, since God made the world, if the Old Testament speaks there of some Holy Spirit, they claimed that this Holy Spirit must be something different. There it is: “Others said that the Spirit in the prophets was one, while the Spirit in the New Testament was another.” Do you see? Great is their error; great indeed is the error surrounding these matters. Or rather, as Saint Cyril says, all this is blasphemy. And you should realize, my dear friends, that these heresies do not belong only to the past.

You know that these heresies still circulate, first of all within modern heresies. They have not died. I repeat: they circulate within modern heresies. Secondly, they are often repeated even by our own Orthodox Christians, who would never be branded as heretics. Yet these heresies are repeated. Take, for example, the heresy of Arianism. Do you know that this heresy, in one form or another, is active even within the Church itself? Do you know this? And yet the person who expresses it is not called a heretic, although he is one. When someone says, “I do not believe that Christ is God,” what more did Arius say? Was this not precisely what he said? Do you know that all of Europe is becoming Arian in its belief? Do you know this?

It may sound strange. That is why it is called neo-Arianism, and Saint Justin Popovich, the Serbian father, attacked it relentlessly. Yes, you know this. And as for this Europe with which we are going to become one—Europe... I will speak to you about it someday, if only I am given the opportunity: what is Europe? Not from a technical point of view; that does not concern us. Nor in terms of armaments or fine dining; those things are not very important. But spiritually speaking, what is Europe?

Do you know that the spirit of Europe—I mention this only in passing, since I have opened the subject and do not want to leave it unfinished—entered Russia under Peter the Great in the form of the Enlightenment, as Solzhenitsyn himself acknowledges? This European spirit entered and brought about a second phase, as Dostoevsky also acknowledges when he says... For you know that the spirit of Europe was atheistic; the spirit of Europe was atheistic. That is how it entered Russia under Peter the Great,

through the reforms Peter the Great introduced. That is why he is even called “the Great,” rather like “Herod the Great,” because Herod built the Temple. But what kind of man Herod was is another matter. Peter the Great was not an evil man, but these were the ideas of the time. He introduced the spirit of Europe and those innovations, with the result that atheism entered Russia—Orthodox Russia. A few years before the great calamity that overtook Russia, Dostoevsky said, according to Solzhenitsyn, “If there is a new reform or a revolution, it will inevitably...” And indeed, the Revolution of 1917 sprang from atheism and imposed atheism upon the Orthodox people of Russia. In our own Greek lands, after 1821, the so-called European Enlightenment came trampling in with its heavy boots. Just as it entered Russia under Peter the Great, so it entered Greece after liberation from Ottoman rule. Makriyannis stands as a witness of resistance, as a breakwater, we might say, against this spirit of the European Enlightenment. Makriyannis is that witness. If you read his memoirs, you will see it.

You will see it. “They came to us from the West,” he says, “all these Kolettises, Soutsoi, and Moutsoi, and now they act as though they know everything,” speaking in his own distinctive way. He was uneducated, but he was a man enlightened by God. That, then, was the first invasion. The second invasion will come when we become Europe—not geographically, but culturally, in a certain sense. And then every defect Europe has will come with it: the Europe that embraces Arianism. We too, here in Greece, became Arian long ago—long ago. And just as the Revolution of 1917 found atheism already present among the intellectual class, though this does not mean that ordinary people had remained untouched,

so we too have already been altered here. And if we were to hold a referendum, we would not vote for what Makriyannis said; evil would come trampling into our homeland in its heavy boots. You must know these things; please, you must know them. If you wish, there is nothing original in what I am saying. I am not some scholar of history who spends his life immersed in it. These things are spoken of and written about, and we have the evidence, the events, and the books. Anyone can see it very, very clearly. It takes neither philosophy nor the gift of prophecy to discern what will happen after some time. Yes, even our language will be lost. You may ask, “Why are we so obsessed with this language?” Listen to something that happened yesterday.

I entered the sanctuary to give my talk. As I went in, a boy—I do not know whether he is here, though I am sure his mother is present—said to me, “May I take your bag and bring it outside?” I replied, “Efcharistó lían—thank you very much.” Pay attention: “Efcharistó lían.” He answered, “Apostolis.” So I said to him—and I said it then, and I will tell you now—“Why did you tell me your name was Apostolis?” He replied, “Didn’t you say my name was Ilias?” I had not said, “Your name is Ilias.” How had he understood me? As, “Thank you, Ilias.” But what I had said was, “Thank you very much.” It was like what happened to the Jews at the Crucifixion of Christ. Christ spoke Hebrew upon the Cross,

the ancient language of Moses: “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” Because the Jews no longer spoke Hebrew but Aramaic, that mongrel language—for what was Aramaic? It was the language of Mesopotamia—those standing around the Cross said, “He is calling Elijah. He is calling Elijah to save Him. Let us see whether Elijah will come.” Do you see? The boy did not know the word lían, meaning “very much.” And yet, until recently, our official report cards bore the words “Lían kalós—very good.” Not much time has passed, and already we are forgetting our language. My beloved, let us stop here, so that you may see what evil is coming. Do not imagine that heresies are things of the past. This is what I want to say. They are

present everywhere. That is why the things we say here are not merely for the sake of history. They are matters of immediate concern, and we need them very much.

«Οὐ χωρίζομεν τὴν Ἁγίαν Τριάδα ὡς τινές, οὔτε συναλοιφὴν ὡς Σαβέλλιος ἐργαζόμεθα». Δεν χωρίζομεν, λέγει. Με εμποδίζει πολύ αυτό στην όρασή μου. Τι να κάνουμε, όμως;

Το πει λίγο πιο κάτω. Εκκλησία. Εδώ το λέει λίγο παρακάτω ξανά. Τι; Κάτι πάρα πολύ σπουδαίο. Εδώ λέει: «Στην Ιερουσαλήμ έχουμε, εδώ έχουμε, σε εμάς είναι, σε εμάς πάντα τα αξιώματα». Τι θα πει αξιώματα; Προνόμια. Εμείς εδώ, στην πόλη των Ιεροσολύμων, έχουμε όλα τα προνόμια. Ποια προνόμια;

το Πνεύμα το Άγιον είμαι εγώ, εκ των οποίων πρώτος —γιατί το είπαν και δεύτερος και τρίτος— πρώτος το είπε ο Σίμων ο Μάγος. Οι δε, άλλη κατηγορία τώρα αιρετικών, είναι οι Γνωστικοί, τους οποίους πολέμησε, σας είπα, ο Άγιος Ειρηναίος, Επίσκοπος Λυώνος, και οι οποίοι είπαν πολλά πράγματα: ότι άλλος είναι —προσέξτε αυτό το σημείο— άλλος είναι ο Παράκλητος στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη και άλλος είναι ο Παράκλητος στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Άλλο Άγιο Πνεύμα εκεί, άλλο Άγιο Πνεύμα στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Είδατε τι μπορεί να πάθουν εκείνοι που χωρίζουν την Καινή και την Παλαιά Διαθήκη, που το λέγαμε την περασμένη φορά;

Ξέρετε ότι κυκλοφορούν αυτές οι αιρέσεις, καταρχάς μέσα σε σύγχρονες αιρέσεις. Δεν πέθαναν οι αιρέσεις αυτές. Ξαναλέγω, κυκλοφορούν μέσα σε σύγχρονες αιρέσεις. Και δεύτερον, αναμασώνται αυτά πολλές φορές και από τους Ορθοδόξους χριστιανούς μας, που δεν θα είχαν τη ρετσινιά του αιρετικού. Αναμασώνται αυτές οι αιρέσεις. Λέμε, φερ' ειπείν, η αίρεσις του Αρειανισμού. Το ξέρετε ότι αυτή η αίρεση καθ' οιονδήποτε τρόπον κινείται μέσα και εις αυτή την Εκκλησία; Το ξέρετε αυτό; Κι όμως εκείνος που θα το έλεγε δεν χαρακτηρίζεται αιρετικός. Κι όμως είναι αιρετικός. Όταν λέγει ότι δεν πιστεύω ότι ο Χριστός είναι Θεός, τι περισσότερο έλεγε ο Άρειος; Αυτό δεν έλεγε; Το ξέρετε ότι η Ευρώπη ολόκληρη αρειανίζει; Το ξέρετε αυτό;

Φαίνεται παράξενο. Γι' αυτό και λέγεται νεοαρειανισμός, που τον εκτύπησε ανελέητα ο πατήρ Ιουστίνος Πόποβιτς, αυτός ο Σέρβος. Ναι, το ξέρετε. Και για να μην σας πω, αυτή η Ευρώπη με την οποία θα γίνουμε ένα, της Ευρώπης... Θα σας το πω κάποια φορά, μόνο να μου δοθεί μια ευκαιρία: τι εστί Ευρώπη. Όχι από τεχνικής πλευράς, δεν ενδιαφέρει αυτό, ούτε από πλευράς εξοπλισμών ή καλοφαγίας· δεν έχουν πολλή σημασία. Από πνευματικής πλευράς, τι εστί Ευρώπη;
