Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that claims about the Holy Spirit and salvation must rest on the written revelation of both the Old and New Testaments. The Holy Spirit is presented as the true author of Scripture, working through the biblical writers without suppressing their personalities, education, vocabulary, or individual styles. The Holy Spirit is divine, living, personal, rational, and ultimately unsearchable, not an impersonal force or a second spirit equal to Him.

Beloved, we are now in the sixteenth Catechetical Lecture. This is our second talk on this lecture, and we are in the second paragraph, which we had already begun. The subject is the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril continues: “Let us, then, say concerning the Holy Spirit only what has been written.” So let us speak about the Holy Spirit, but only of those things that are written.

There is a subtle point here to which we must pay attention. This applies not only to the Holy Spirit, but also to every other subject—to Jesus Christ, to the Holy Trinity, and to all matters concerning our salvation. We cannot draw upon things that are not written in Holy Scripture. And what do we mean by Holy Scripture? Both the New Testament and the Old Testament, for Holy Scripture is one, comprising the New and Old Testaments. We cannot, then, draw upon things that are not written, because if we use unwritten things, we do not obtain

confirmation of a truth, but only conjecture about it. And certainly, in theology, we cannot rely on conjecture; we must always use what is authentic and true, because conjecture does not lead to salvation. At the same time, we must not turn what we take from Scripture into conjecture either. It is not only unwritten things about which we must not speculate; neither should we speculate about what is written. You may ask, “Can something that is written become a matter of conjecture?” Certainly it can. But that has nothing to do with what I mean when I speak of theological reflection upon something written.

I theologize, because to theologize means to work with material that has already been given. I could not speak of theology unless I were examining what has been handed down and deposited—that is, what has been written. Only that which has been deposited. Now, regarding something not explicitly set down, I may reverently examine it and draw out certain implications. This is not called conjecture; I am still theologizing. Theology, then, does not merely interpret something briefly. It may also unfold and extend it, always within the limits and measure of Scripture. For concerning that same passage, I may find a wealth of further information—one or more additional teachings—in other parts of Holy Scripture. On the basis of Holy Scripture, therefore, I will theologize about that passage of Holy Scripture. You see, then, that to theologize and develop a point does not mean to speculate. Conjecture is usually found among heretics, or among those who prefer to remain with their own opinion rather than with what has been deposited within the Church.

There are also points called theologoumena. It is one thing to theologize and produce what we might call a fruit of theology, and another for something to be a theologoumenon. A theologoumenon is something we discuss because Scripture does not give us enough evidence to say more. We may say something about it, but always reverently and without any intention of departing from the faith. This is called a theologoumenon: something open to reverent discussion. But we can never base a dogma on a theologoumenon. Dogmas must be founded upon Holy Scripture as it is theologically interpreted. Thank you.

Consider the dogmas. Not one dogma lies outside Holy Scripture. You should know this, because some people say, “Ah, I read...” The Protestant world says, “I read Holy Scripture, and I have no need of the dogmas of the Church, the Fathers, or Tradition.” Here lies the first great error—the monumental error—of the Protestant world. Why? Because in rejecting the authority of the Church and the Fathers—and pay attention to this point; pay very close attention—the Protestant world turns itself into the authority. And when it tells you,

“Take Scripture into your own hands. You do not need to rely upon what the Fathers have interpreted within the Church, because we do not accept the authority of the Fathers. Whatever you understand when you read it—that is the truth.” Thus, the attempt to escape the authority of the Fathers turned the readers and students of Holy Scripture into what? Into little authorities of their own. Do you understand what I am saying? But when every believer becomes an authority, tell me: how many authorities do we then have? And if we have a multitude of authorities, where is authority itself? Authority is destroyed. Nothing remains.

This is why the Protestant world has hundreds of confessions: everyone interprets as he sees fit. And consider, beloved, some of the tragic ironies of history. The word “Protestant” means one who protests. The Protestant world protested against the Pope, who said, “I am the authority.” In this, their protest was justified. The Pope cannot be the authority. In our Church, no single person is the authority. First comes God. We shall see this next Sunday, where it says that Peter and John were sent. Who sent Peter and John to Samaria

to examine Philip’s work? Who sent them? Peter is regarded as the foremost of the Apostles. Who, then, sent Peter? If Peter were the supreme authority, could he himself be sent? Do you see? Who sent him? The body of the Apostles, the body of the Church. There is the authority. It rests neither in Peter alone nor in Paul alone, but in Peter, Paul, Matthew, Luke, and all the others together as one body. Authority, then, does not reside in one person. Authority resides in one person only: Jesus Christ. The Church possesses that authority. And the tragedy of history is that the Protestants, in seeking to reject the authority of the Pope—and they were right to protest against it—became little popes themselves.

They shattered the papal authority into millions of pieces, and every Protestant became a little pope. This, we might say, is the tragedy of Protestantism. That is why they also interpret Holy Scripture incorrectly. They do not possess the authority. They do not. Yet they always appeal to the authority of Scripture. But Scripture requires interpretation, and to interpret it, as the Apostle Peter says, you must have the Holy Spirit. And you, wearing your filthy peasant shoes upon your unwashed feet, enter a sacred place to interpret what? What does God say to Moses as he approaches the mystery of the bush that burned without being consumed, from which God spoke? “Take off your sandals,” He says.

“The place is sacred; it is holy.” So too, the realm of Scripture is holy. You cannot enter the realm of Holy Scripture with dirty feet and muddy shoes. Instead, you must reverently say, “I will accept the interpretation deposited in Scripture and handed down in the Church.” We accept the standing and authority of the Church. Authority has been deposited there, in the Church alone. I trust you understand. What, then, does Saint Cyril say? “We shall speak,” he says, “only of what is written.” The man—if I may put it this way—has the fear of God. Should I say things that might cause me to fall into heresy? Saint Cyril lived in the fourth century; this Catechetical Lecture is believed to date from around AD 350. He lived through the tragedy of Arianism and was himself one of its victims. By “victim,” I mean that Saint Cyril of Jerusalem was persecuted precisely because he was Orthodox. And more tragically still—one of those dreadful things that happen—the very man who ordained him later persecuted him. The bishop ordained him and then persecuted him because, in the meantime, he had caught the infection of Arianism. So, beloved, we shall say only what is written. “But if something has not been written, let us not pry into it.”

He says that if something has not been written, we should not investigate it excessively. We may discuss it to some extent, but we will not pry. What we mean by discussing something is that it may be a theologoumenon. We may not understand very much; there may even be another view on the matter. But we will say, “We cannot say anything beyond this. Leave it as it is.” For, beloved, Christianity is a Mystery—the Incarnation of the Son of God is a Mystery. I did not tell you this earlier; I mentioned it to you during the questions. This Mystery cannot be comprehended. Christianity as a whole, then, is a Mystery. We shall understand only what it is possible for us to understand.

Indeed, we shall understand only a small part even of what can be understood. The greater part cannot be comprehended. Christianity is like an iceberg. Do you know how much of an iceberg lies beneath the water, compared with the part that rises above it? Only a small part appears above the surface; the rest is submerged. So what do we see of the iceberg? Only what lies above the surface of the water. The part beneath, which makes up its greater mass, remains submerged. We cannot see it. That is the Mystery. Therefore, beloved, let us not pry. Let us always have the courage to say, “I do not know this,” because Scripture does not say. Scripture does not say, so I do not know.

“This Holy Spirit spoke the Scriptures.” I want you to notice something here. When I saw this, I stopped and underlined it, because I underline in the book whatever I wish to emphasize. I underlined the definite article: “the Scriptures.” He says, “This Holy Spirit spoke the Scriptures.” For a moment I expected—and this is why it startled me—to read, “This Holy Spirit spoke in the Scriptures.” But he does not say “in the Scriptures”; he says “the Scriptures.” Is there no difference? If we said, “The Holy Spirit spoke in the Scriptures,” then His truth would be found within what the sacred authors wrote. But what the sacred authors wrote was itself written by the Holy Spirit. Holy Scripture does not merely speak about the Holy Spirit; Holy Scripture was written by the Holy Spirit. That is the difference. When he says here that the Holy Spirit “spoke the Scriptures,” it means that He is their author. The author is not Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Peter, or James—to name the writers of the New Testament. Nor is it Moses, to turn to the Old Testament; nor the writers of the Books of Kingdoms, nor Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, or Daniel. Who, then, is the author?

The Holy Spirit is the author. He comes and writes through the hand of the human writer. But do not suppose—for I know someone may object here, and I shall explain—that the sacred authors were passive instruments, like a medium who writes while in a trance or says whatever he says, and afterward remembers and knows nothing of it. Why is that? Simply because the medium’s consciousness took no part, and therefore he has no knowledge of what occurred.

A foreign self dictated whatever it wished through the medium. Here, however, neither the consciousness nor the person of the sacred author is abolished. Not only are the consciousness and person of the sacred author—Luke, John, and the others—preserved, but the Holy Spirit also makes use of each author’s personal qualities. And what are these? His education, his particular turns of phrase, his personal observations, and so forth. Thus we can say that, in terms of the richness of its vocabulary, the richest work in the New Testament

is the Gospel according to Luke. And which of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament do you think has the poorest vocabulary? You will be astonished when you hear it: the lofty, eagle-like Gospel according to John. It is the poorest in vocabulary—the poorest. It is truly remarkable, because the Holy Spirit uses the sacred authors together with all their personal qualities. How does Paul write? Paul’s writing is somewhat intricate, because that is his personal characteristic. If I read an author whose work I know, will I not recognize that a particular book belongs to him?

This is what we call personal style. And what is that? It is the sum of many things: education, experience, and much more—the way I express myself. All these are personal qualities. And so, concerning Scripture, the Apostle Peter says of the Apostle Paul—here I cite Scripture speaking about Scripture: “There are some passages in the letters of our beloved Paul that are difficult to understand, which certain ignorant and unstable people distort to their own destruction.” That is what he says.

The Holy Spirit writes Holy Scripture. He employs the sacred authors, not as passive pawns, for they retain their whole personality; nevertheless, beloved, it is the Holy Spirit who writes the Word of God. Do not forget this. I was deeply struck by the expression, “This Holy Spirit spoke the Scriptures.” And he continues: “He Himself has said concerning Himself as much as He willed, or as much as we were able to receive.” Thus, the Holy Spirit Himself wrote about Himself.

He wrote it. He wrote about Himself. Why about Himself? Because the subject we are examining is the Holy Spirit. Yet the Holy Spirit also writes about the Father, about the Son, about salvation, about the Last Things (eschata), and about everything else, because the Word of God contains all things. But when Saint Cyril says here, “He has spoken concerning Himself,” he means concerning the subject now under discussion. And what is our subject? The Holy Spirit. So what am I writing about the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit Himself has written it. How much has He written? What has He written? “As much as He willed”—as much as He desired, whatever He desired. The Spirit is Lord. And “Lord” means God: the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. Lord and God. He has written whatever He wills, however much He wills, and to the extent He wills—or, “as much as we were able to receive.”

As much as we were able to understand and know. You see, then, who the sacred Author is: in essence, the Holy Spirit, who writes about Himself. Saint Cyril says these things here by way of a brief introduction, because immediately afterward, beginning with the third paragraph, he will enter into his main subject. “Let us therefore speak of what He has said.” Let us state, set forth, and develop what the Holy Spirit Himself has said. “For what He has not said, we do not dare to say.” For whatever the Holy Spirit has not said, we lack the boldness to speak of it. We do not dare to state it, develop it, or present it.

Now, beloved, having completed the second paragraph, we come to the third paragraph and those that follow, where Saint Cyril turns to his main subject: the Holy Spirit. Everything we discussed last time and up to this point was simply an introduction, laying down certain conditions for approaching this great subject of the Holy Spirit. “There is one Holy Spirit alone, the Paraclete.” The Holy Spirit, he says, is one, and He also bears another name: the Paraclete. There is only one. Yes, there is no second Holy Spirit. There is only one. Why is He one?

Why should there not be two, or three, or ten? “And just as there is one God, the Father, and there is no second Father”—because God the Father is one, and just as there is no second Father, so there is no second Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is one. “And just as there is one only-begotten Son and Word (Logos) of God, and He has no brother.” Why does he speak of Christ having no brother? Because the Son was begotten of the Father, whereas the Holy Spirit was not begotten but proceeds from the Father. And, as we shall see, He does not proceed from the Son, as the Roman Catholics say, but is sent through the Son. The verb “to proceed” means one thing—

—while the verbs “to send” and “to be sent” mean another. What, then, do we see here? Jesus Christ has no brother. “In the same way, the Holy Spirit is one.” Just as the Father is one and the Son is one, so the Holy Spirit is one. “He alone, and there is no second Spirit equal in honor to Him.” This means: “Thus there is one Holy Spirit, He alone.” Only one. “And there is no second Spirit equal in honor to Him.” There is no other Holy Spirit equal to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, then, is one. “Therefore, the Holy Spirit is a power of surpassing greatness.”

The Holy Spirit, then, is a power of surpassing greatness. But this word “surpassing”—here you can see the poverty of human language. You know that human language is very poor indeed. Among human languages, Greek is said to be rich because it can express finer distinctions with greater precision. That is true. It is true. Yet we have hurried to destroy our own language. I do not know what else to say. I consider it an exceedingly grave crime—an exceedingly grave crime against our nation and against humanity itself. For—

—a treasure belonging to the whole world is being destroyed. We ought to have been its guardians, yet we have managed to leave other peoples as the guardians of the ancient Greek language. But let that pass. Pay attention: this is not merely what we might call a barren, pointless observation.

What we are saying now is not simply a lamentation, weeping over things that are not worth grieving for. No, it is not like that. It is a national calamity. My beloved, even if our state treasury were completely emptied, even if enemies or neighboring peoples invaded and conquered all of Greece, we would still be able to recover everything again.

History has shown this. But if we lose our language, we are lost finally and forever. Understand this. I am sorry, but I will say it; indeed, this is the first time I have said it. When you give us those slips of paper bearing names to be commemorated, or when you submit your questions, I see here that one word has an accent that should have been written carefully, while elsewhere there are no accents at all, and I am filled with deep sorrow. Do you not understand that by writing the accents we are offering resistance? Do you not understand? It is a resistance against the destruction and final loss of this treasure. Do you want me to tell you something else? I am a monk; that is why I speak this way.

That is why they want to destroy the monasteries and reduce their influence, so that they will not speak—whoever they may be, so long as they do not speak. For these are not political matters; they are national matters. National matters. And no one has the right to lay a profane hand upon a national treasure. When Stalin was once urged to introduce a change in the language—and what I am telling you was published—do you know what he said? “Hands off our sacred language.” Yet that was a language and a script that we gave them. We Greeks gave them the script. The script is Greek. You know the familiar Cyrillic alphabet.

So you see, beloved, this treasure is ours by inheritance; no one gave it to us, and yet we are trying to make it disappear. What can one say? Forgive me for inserting this observation, but I did so to explain what Saint Cyril says here. What did he say? That the Holy Spirit is “a power of surpassing greatness.” Human language is poor—not Greek in particular, but human language itself. For what does “surpassing” really express? Nothing adequate. When I was a child and someone I loved asked me, “How much do you love me?” I would stretch my arms as wide as they could go—about a meter then, though now they reach farther—and say, “I love you this much.” This is a common expression; all children do it. “I love you this much.” Does that mean you love someone by one meter? Is that what “the greatest” means? It tells us nothing, my beloved. This is the poverty of human language, not of Greek specifically, but of all human language. What can we say about God? What vocabulary can we use for the infinite God, when His power can only be described as “a power of surpassing greatness”? And what does Saint Cyril say next? “Something divine and unsearchable.” The Holy Spirit is indeed divine; He is God, as we shall see later, and He is an unsearchable mystery, just as God is unsearchable and unapproachable.

“For He lives and is rational.” Pay attention to the words “He lives.” This means that He is the living God. He is not a dead god. Remember how the Prophet Elijah, on Mount Carmel, sought to show Israel that his God was the living God, while the carved images they worshiped as gods—wooden idols—were not living. They had been led into that worship by the most wicked Queen Jezebel, a Syro-Phoenician idolater who had married—Jezebel, forgive me—Ahab, the king of Israel, and led that miserable man wherever she wished. Elijah wanted to prove that the God of Israel is the living God. He said to the priests, “Cry out! Pray to your god Baal and ask him to send fire down from heaven.” “Baal, Baal, send fire!” Nothing happened—no voice and no answer. Then the Prophet Elijah knelt down and, as it says, placed his face between his knees, bending his whole body over. His prayer was not long, but brief: “O Lord of Israel, You are the living God; reveal Your presence.”

As soon as he arose, fire fell from heaven upon the sacrifice and consumed it, even though they had poured a great deal of water over it. You know the account, so I need not relate it all. What does this mean here? God lives. He is the living God, not a dead god. He is the living God. Saint Cyril then says, “And He is rational.” What does this mean? It means that He is a person. Please pay close attention to this. When we say “rational,” we always mean a person. All human beings are rational. Do not object that some people are insane, because we should not misuse the term “rational” by applying it merely to the way someone may behave at a particular moment.

The brain is one thing, and rationality is another. Suppose I am walking along and step on a melon rind—a banana leaf, rather, a banana peel. Please, never throw such peels into the street; people can be killed by them. And yet people thoughtlessly throw them away. Suppose, then, that I step on a banana peel—

—fall down, strike the back of my head, and become completely impaired. Or suppose I suffer a stroke with the same result. Have I now ceased to be a rational being? No. The brain has simply been damaged. The brain is not the nous, the spiritual intellect.

The brain is the organ of the nous. The nous is the faculty of the soul.

The organ, then, has been damaged. Therefore, when we say “rational,” we do not mean the brain; we mean the soul, which expresses what we call rationality. You know, there is no strict definition of rationality. There is only an empirical description of it, expressed through Aristotle’s familiar four predicates by which we identify rational thought.

Nor does rationality simply mean that you think differently from me. That is merely a particular way of thinking, a certain mentality. Rationality is something much deeper. So there is no real definition of it. What is rationality? What can I tell you? If I am here, I am not at the monastery. That is one of the principles of rational thought. Of course, if I am here, I am not at the monastery; and if I am at the monastery, I am not here. That is one element of rationality. Thus we have these four principles known empirically—only empirically, not theoretically. Intelligence is also identified empirically. And, while we are on the subject, the same applies to the laws of nature. You know how some people say that the laws of nature are fixed and unalterable. But what are the laws of nature? This expression is not my own; it comes from scientists. The laws of nature are nothing more than experience derived from repeated observation.

We idealize this experience and call it a law of nature. I mention this because some people ask, “How, then, can a miracle violate the laws of nature?” But what is a law of nature? A law of nature is in God’s hands. It is nothing more than experience—nothing more than idealized experience. That is the precise expression: “idealized experience.” This is what a law of nature is. Why does an object fall? Because every time we release it, it falls. Why does it fall? We say it is because of the law of gravity. But if we go somewhere else, will that same law apply in the same way? It may not. Somewhere else in the universe, different conditions may apply. So you see that these laws are products of our experience. The same is true here. When we say “rational,” what do we mean? A person. A person.

My cat is not rational because it is not a person—or, because it is not rational, it is not a person. The same is true of my dog and my cow. What, then, is a person? Any being endowed with rationality. The holy angels are rational beings; they are persons. The demons, who are fallen angels, are also rational beings; they too are persons. When we say that the Holy Spirit lives—a cat also lives, but it is not a person—we add that He lives and is rational, which means that He is a person. Please understand how important this is. The Millenarians, for example, who are heretics, tell us that the Holy Spirit is nothing more than an energy of God. No, gentlemen. The Holy Spirit is a person. Let me give you a simple example, because what will Saint Cyril tell us here? It is enough to remind you that, when we finished the fifteenth catechesis the year before last, we had devoted twenty-two talks to it. One year usually gives us twenty-three or twenty-four talks. Last year we had twenty-one—or twenty-five—or twenty-two, because we had a very severe winter. One catechesis occupied the whole year. What am I saying? I do not know everything Saint Cyril will tell us as we proceed. He will tell us many things and will even mention the heretics, so that we may compare their teachings. Therefore, when you say that the Holy Spirit is an energy, remember that an energy is not a person. It is an impulse or operation.

God’s divine uncreated energies are divine, but they are not persons. The Holy Spirit, however, is not an energy of God; the Holy Spirit is a person. Let me give you a simple example. Somewhere in the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit says to the Christians in Antioch, where Paul and Barnabas were: “Set apart for Me”—listen carefully to what is said—the Holy Spirit says, “Set apart for Me Paul and Barnabas,” and so forth. “Set them apart for Me.” Who said this? The Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit says, “Set apart for Me—appoint for Me,” because He is a person. Only a person speaks. The Father does not say, “Set apart for Me,” nor does the Son say, “Set apart for Me.” The Holy Spirit says, “Set apart for Me,” because the Holy Spirit dwells within the Church. Would you like another example? When the Apostle Peter rebuked that tragic couple, Ananias and Sapphira, what did he say? “You have not lied to man, but to God.” And what had he said just before that? “Why have you lied to the Holy Spirit?” You did not lie to a man, but to God Himself. The Holy Spirit, then, is God, and God is—

not without reason. God is personal; He is a person. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is a person. “He sanctifies all things made by God through Christ.”

He sanctifies—that is, He brings about sanctification. Whatever comes from God through Jesus Christ, whatever exists and whatever comes to pass, the Holy Spirit sanctifies it. In other words, He sets His seal upon it and blesses whatever is accomplished by the Father through the Son. This is something exceedingly great. During the time for questions, we were discussing it, and I was sorry because, you might say, I had left something out. Never forget, my beloved, that no subject is ever exhausted. Never. There are always new things to be discovered. Our salvation is not—

worked by the Father alone, or by the Son alone, or by the Holy Spirit alone, but by the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit together. This is precisely why, at the Baptism of our Lord, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all revealed. The same is true at the Transfiguration. We therefore use this expression: the Father creates, sustains, and loves. Whatever the work may be, one person never acts apart from the other persons. Never, never. The Father acts through the Son in the Holy Spirit. Thus, the Father sends the Son into the world to grant salvation. And who sets His seal upon this salvation?

The Holy Spirit. The seal of the Holy Spirit in its fullest sense is Pentecost. There the Holy Spirit sets His seal. Upon what? Upon the work of Christ. He confirms—pay attention—the authenticity and identity of the person of Christ: that He is the Son of God. For if He were not, He would have usurped divine attributes and would be in the abyss of Hell. Secondly, the Holy Spirit seals the work of Christ so that it may advance throughout history. Who, then, dwells within the Church? Certainly the Father and the Son are also present, for the persons mutually indwell one another. But who abides and brings about sanctification within the Church? The Holy Spirit. How do we know this? Christ said so.

He says, “I am going away, and indeed it is to your advantage that I go away.” This does not mean that Christ is absent. Did He not Himself say, “And behold, I am with you always”? Until the end of the age, until history comes to its close, I am with you. But what does He say? “I will go away, and then”—who will come? The Holy Spirit. Why is this to our advantage? Does the Son need to get out of the Holy Spirit’s way? The Holy Spirit does not come until humanity, in the person of Christ, has been reconciled with the Father. Christ accomplishes this reconciliation through His human nature. It is not a matter of His having a conversation with the Father to persuade Him. The mediation of the Son is not a mediation of words; it is a mediation of being. It is the mediation of His ontological existence, of His ontological human existence—

in relation to the Father, you see. Then the Holy Spirit comes. For the Holy Spirit both proceeds from the Father and is sent by the Father. This is why Christ said, “It is to your advantage.” When the Holy Spirit came, what had Christ said? “He, the Paraclete, will remain with you forever.” For as long as history continues, He will be with you. Thus the Holy Trinity acts. Yet it is especially the Holy Spirit whom we have with us. To see this in a majestic image, and to see that the dogma of the Holy Trinity is already present in the very first verse of Holy Scripture, listen to what it says: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” God created. And God said, “Let there be light.”

The Word (Logos). What does the Old Testament say elsewhere? “By the Word of the Lord the heavens were established.” Who is this Word? It means that they were established through the Word. Who, then, is this Word? It is not a word written with a lowercase letter, but the Word with a capital letter. In the Old Testament, however, this meaning is hidden, and it appears with a lowercase letter. What does the searchlight of the New Testament reveal to us? That it must be written with a capital letter: the Word of God. The phrase “God said” reveals the Word, and the Word is the second person of the Godhead. Why? Because the Word is a person, just as the Holy Spirit is a person. Then God said, “Let there be light.” God made the world, the earth, and the waters.

The waters covered the whole face of the earth, and the Spirit of God moved over the abyss. Abyss means bottomless. In Greek, the word is formed with the privative prefix: a depth with no bottom. It was not a depth that you could measure by lowering a fathom line, a rope with a weight attached. These were all the waters upon the earth, and nothing had yet appeared. An abyss, something bottomless: there was no measurable depth. This is, of course, a manner of speaking, because there was depth. The Pacific Ocean, for example, has places around nine thousand metres deep. So go to the shop, buy two or three coils of ordinary rope—the kind we use for clotheslines—

and go to the Pacific Ocean to measure it. Then we shall see what you manage to find with two or three coils of rope! Bottomless, an abyss, then. The Holy Spirit moved over the abyss. If we take the image of the dove, as at Pentecost—forgive me, at the Baptism—we may picture the Holy Spirit in this way. The image itself comes from Holy Scripture. We see Him moving over the waters: the abyss, the waters below, and He above them with His wings, hovering over them.

What is He doing? The Holy Spirit is flying over the waters. Allow me to use a particular verb: He is brooding over life, incubating life. What a beautiful expression! For the Holy Spirit lives and is the Giver of life. Do we not say this in the prayer “O Heavenly King”? It is a prayer to the Holy Spirit. He is the One who lives, who gives and bestows life. How majestic, my beloved! He comes like a mother hen to brood over life and bring it forth. And the first life appeared in the waters because the Holy Spirit brooded over dead matter. Life did not arise from dead matter—

spontaneously. There is no spontaneous generation of life. The Holy Spirit came, brooded over it, and life emerged. What, then, does the Holy Spirit do? He is the One who sanctifies, who sets His seal upon, blesses, and brings to fulfilment whatever the Father creates through the Son. In a certain sense, the Holy Spirit perfects it. Of course, the Father perfects, the Son perfects, and the Holy Spirit perfects; yet, in a manner of speaking, the work is ascribed distinctly to each person. The one place where there is a true and actual distinction of work is this: the Father did not become man; neither the Father nor the Holy Spirit was incarnate.

Only the Son was incarnate. Here we have a distinction that is real. All the other works belong in common to the three persons of the Holy Trinity. What the Father does, the Son does, and the Holy Spirit does. These works are common because the essence is common. We have three persons and the communion of the three persons, but there is one essence and one God. The text says, “He enlightens the souls of the righteous. He also worked in the prophets,” and so forth. Who is this “He”? The Holy Spirit. What does He do? He illumines the souls of the righteous. But does He illumine the souls of the ungodly?

You should know that the Holy Spirit, like the Son and the Father—for, as I said before, these works are common to Them—also lays siege to the ungodly person, seeking to win him. This is especially true when God, who alone sees a person’s inner disposition, draws very near and presses upon him. The Apostle Paul is an example. Yet no one can say, “I refused God’s visitation, and that was the end of it.” No. The Holy Spirit lays siege, my beloved, to every human soul, to every person. But our free disposition is the key that determines whether we shall receive God or not. And this key—

is also called freedom, and it lies in the hands of each person. I hold the key of my own free choice; God does not hold it for me. What does the Son say in the Apocalypse? “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” Who will open it? You will open it by your own free choice. The Holy Spirit, then, my beloved, lays siege to every person so that he may be saved. But when He sees that a person does not receive the things of the Spirit, as the Apostle Paul says, why does that person not receive them? Because, he says, he is a natural man. Pay attention to this word: natural. What does it mean here? It does not have the modern sense in which we speak of something belonging to the psyche or the soul.

It means animal-like, because the Greek word for soul can also mean life—that is, biological life. The natural man, therefore, is merely biological man, the person whose whole concern is, “Let me eat and drink,” and, as that wretched Sardanapalus, the Assyrian king, used to say, “and indulge in sexual pleasure.”

Sexual pleasure, and nothing else. The inscription beneath his statue, on its base, said: “Traveller, listen to me. Settle down and enjoy yourself. Eat whatever you want, drink whatever you want—eat, drink, and indulge in sexual pleasure.” That means giving yourself over to sin, to what we call immorality.

Nothing more. This is what is called the natural man, the merely biological man. Then there is the carnal man. Who is called carnal? The one who has come to know the Holy Spirit but still remains subject to carnality. And who is the third? The spiritual man. This is the division, the distinction made by the Apostle Paul: natural, carnal, and spiritual. Who is the spiritual man? The one who has the Holy Spirit and is governed by the Holy Spirit. Do not imagine that the first kind, the merely biological man, is found only somewhere far away. Let me put it very plainly; it does no harm. If you tell someone that he should exercise self-restraint because it is Lent, and that he should also fast—

because it is Lent—he imagines that fasting will drain all his strength and rob him of his biological vitality. If you tell him to practise self-restraint, he likewise thinks he will lose his manhood. I have heard this repeatedly. “Practise a little self-restraint and receive Holy Communion during Lent.” They are afraid. They fear losing their biological vitality. These are what we call natural people. And there are by no means only a few of them, my beloved, even among us. You, then, are a natural man. Well, listen: the Holy Spirit dwells only in the souls of the righteous and the spiritual; that is why they are called spiritual people. Do you want proof? Then listen: the Spirit of God does not dwell in natural people. Where does Holy Scripture say this? Listen.

In Genesis it says that when human beings had become flesh—that is, nothing but biology—God said, “My Spirit shall not remain in them, because they are flesh.” They are merely biological people, and My Holy Spirit cannot remain in them. The Holy Spirit is present in the carnal person, but He cannot act freely because that person is still imperfect. But in the natural man, no: the Holy Spirit cannot remain. And the natural man cannot discern the spiritual man. He sees nothing of the spiritual man and understands nothing about him because he does not have the Spirit of God. You see, then, that the Holy Spirit exists and rests only in the souls of the righteous—not in the natural, merely biological people, or, more generally, in the ungodly: those who accept nothing from the Spirit of God. Pay careful attention to these words so that we do not confuse the carnal with the natural. As we conclude today’s subject, my beloved, let us pray to God that He will send His Holy Spirit to dwell permanently within our souls and transform us into spiritual people. May the Lord bless you.

Γι’ αυτό τον λόγο ο προτεσταντικός κόσμος έχει εκατοντάδες ομολογίες, γιατί ο καθένας ερμηνεύει κατά το δοκούν. Και να φανταστείτε, αγαπητοί, μερικά τραγικά της ιστορίας. Ο Προτεστάντης θα πει διαμαρτυρόμενος. Δηλαδή ο διαμαρτυρόμενος κόσμος διαμαρτυρήθη κατά του Πάπα, ο οποίος έλεγε ότι «εγώ είμαι η αυθεντία». Αυτό ήταν το αληθές. Δεν μπορεί ο Πάπας να είναι η αυθεντία. Εις την Εκκλησία μας δεν είναι ένα πρόσωπο αυθεντία. Πρώτον ο Θεός. Θα το δούμε αυτό την ερχομένη Κυριακή, όταν λέγει ότι απέστειλαν Πέτρον και Ιωάννη. Ποιοι απέστειλαν Πέτρον και Ιωάννη στη Σαμάρεια;

«Αυτό το Πνεύμα το Άγιον ελάλησε τας Γραφάς». Εδώ θέλω να προσέξετε κάτι τώρα. Όταν το είδα, σταμάτησα και υπογράμμισα, γιατί υπογραμμίζω στο βιβλίο, κύριε, το οποίο θέλω να τονίσω. Το άρθρον «τας». Λέγει: «Αυτό το Πνεύμα το Άγιον ελάλησε τας Γραφάς». Θα περίμενα για μια στιγμή —γι’ αυτό με αιφνιδίασε— να διαβάσω: «Αυτό το Πνεύμα το Άγιον ελάλησε εις τας Γραφάς». Αλλά δεν λέγει «εις τας Γραφάς», λέγει «τας Γραφάς». Δηλαδή, είναι μία… Με άλλα λόγια, δηλαδή, δεν έχει διαφορά; Τώρα, εάν λέγαμε «εις τας Γραφάς ελάλησε το Πνεύμα το Άγιο», έτσι, τότε η αλήθειά του μέσα σε αυτά που έγραψαν οι Ιεροί Συγγραφείς. Αλλά αυτά που έγραψαν οι Ιεροί Συγγραφείς τα έγραψε το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Η Αγία Γραφή δεν ομιλεί περί του Αγίου Πνεύματος μόνον, αλλά την Αγία Γραφή την έγραψε το Άγιον Πνεύμα. Αυτή είναι η διαφορά. Και όταν λέει εδώ «ελάλησε τας Γραφάς», σημαίνει: αυτός είναι ο συγγραφεύς. Δεν είναι ο Ματθαίος, δεν είναι ο Μάρκος, δεν είναι ο Λουκάς, δεν είναι ο Ιωάννης, δεν είναι ο Παύλος, δεν είναι ο Πέτρος, δεν είναι ο Ιάκωβος. Παίρνω τους συγγραφείς της Καινής Διαθήκης. Δεν είναι ο Μωυσής, να πάρω της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Δεν είναι οι συγγραφείς των Βασιλειών. Δεν είναι ο Ιερεμίας, δεν είναι ο Ησαΐας, δεν είναι ο Ιεζεκιήλ, δεν είναι ο Δανιήλ. Αλλά ποιος είναι;

είναι το κατά Λουκάν Ευαγγέλιο. Το φτωχότερο βιβλίο από τα 27 βιβλία της Καινής Διαθήκης, από πλευράς λέξεων, ποιο λέτε ότι είναι; Θα μείνετε κατάπληκτοι άμα το ακούσετε. Το κατά Ιωάννην, υψιπετές, αετίσιο Ευαγγέλιο. Είναι το πιο φτωχό από πλευράς λέξεων. Το πιο φτωχό. Πανέξιμασία, διότι το Πνεύμα το Άγιο χρησιμοποιεί τους Ιερούς Συγγραφείς και με τα προσωπικά τους στοιχεία. Πώς γράφει ο Παύλος; Ο Παύλος γράφει λίγο στριφνά, γιατί είναι το προσωπικό του ίδιον. Αν διαβάσω έναν συγγραφέα και έχω γνώση, εννοείται, του συγγραφέως, δεν θα καταλάβω ότι αυτό το βιβλίο είναι αυτού του συγγραφέα;

Τώρα, αγαπητοί, αφού τελείωσε και η δευτέρα παράγραφος, ερχόμεθα στην τρίτη παράγραφο και εφεξής, που αναφέρεται πλέον στο κύριο θέμα περί του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Όσα, λοιπόν, είπαμε την περασμένη φορά και μέχρι αυτή τη στιγμή ήταν απλώς μια εισαγωγή, κάποιες προϋποθέσεις για την προσέγγιση αυτού του μεγάλου θέματος περί του Αγίου Πνεύματος. «Ἓν ἐστι μόνον τὸ Ἅγιον Πνεῦμα, ὁ Παράκλητος». Ένα, λέγει, είναι το Άγιο Πνεύμα, που έχει και ένα άλλο όνομα, ο Παράκλητος. Ένα μόνον είναι. Ναι, δεν υπάρχει δεύτερο. Μόνο ένα είναι το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Γιατί είναι ένα;

την εργάζεται ούτε ο Πατήρ, ούτε ο Υιός, ούτε το Πνεύμα το Άγιον, αλλά και ο Πατήρ και ο Υιός και το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Γι' αυτό ακριβώς και στη Βάπτιση του Κυρίου μας εμφανίζεται και ο Πατήρ και ο Υιός και το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Και στη Μεταμόρφωση το ίδιο. Έτσι υπάρχει η εξής διατύπωσις: ότι ο Πατήρ δημιουργεί, συντηρεί, αγαπά. Ό,τι είναι, ποτέ ένα πρόσωπο δεν κινείται ερήμην του ετέρου προσώπου. Ποτέ, ποτέ. Ο Πατήρ διά του Υιού εν Αγίω Πνεύματι. Έτσι ο Πατήρ στέλνει τον Υιόν στον κόσμο για να δώσει τη σωτηρία. Και τη σωτηρία αυτή ποιος την επισφραγίζει;
