Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s sixteenth catechesis prepares those approaching Baptism by explaining the Creed’s confession of the Holy Spirit as Paraclete and the One who spoke through the prophets. Prayer, knowledge of God, and confession of Jesus as Lord depend upon illumination by the Holy Spirit, as expressed in the prayer “O Heavenly King.” Christian doctrine directly shapes moral and communal life: believers are temples of the Holy Spirit and members of Christ, while human love and fellowship should reflect the communion of the Holy Trinity.

My dear friends, we now come to a new catechesis by Saint Cyril, the sixteenth catechesis, which concerns the Holy Spirit. Its title is as follows.

“For those being illumined, prepared in Jerusalem.” That is, Catechesis 16 is addressed to those being illumined—those who are about to receive Baptism. It does not say “catechumens,” but “those being illumined.” They were the class or order of catechumens who were on the threshold of Baptism. In other words, the candidates for Baptism were called “those being illumined.” The catechesis, it says, was prepared in Jerusalem. As I have told you before, this word “prepared” shows that the catechesis was planned: there was a program, an organized plan for giving instruction. It is only natural that such things should not be presented in a disorderly way. Here we see the value of what Saint Cyril of Jerusalem offers us. He plans and organizes his material; he knows what he will present and how he will present it. We might call this an element of teaching method, intended to establish the truths—or knowledge more generally—in the minds of the students, or, in this particular case,

the candidates for Baptism, those being illumined. The subject is: “And in one Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, who spoke through the prophets.” This, then, is the subject: the Holy Spirit, who also bears the name Paraclete and who spoke through the prophets. As you understand, and as you already know, the entire plan of these catecheses is simply an exposition of the Creed. The final catecheses—the last five—are counted in this way: there are eighteen catecheses and one procatechesis, making nineteen, and then five known as the Mystagogical Catecheses, making twenty-four. The Mystagogical Catecheses are brief, and at the same time they set out the pattern of life in the Mysteries: how Baptism is to be lived, the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, and so forth. That is why they are called Mystagogical Catecheses. Those five were delivered after Baptism, whereas the catecheses we are studying now were delivered before Baptism.

And there is a reading from the First Epistle to the Corinthians: “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant,” and so forth. “There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.” In other words, when Saint Cyril is about to speak on his chosen subject, he takes a passage—either a Gospel passage or an apostolic reading—to support that subject, which is an article of the Creed. That is why he says, “And in one Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.” I told you that although Saint Cyril accepts the Nicene Creed—which is why he is Orthodox; otherwise he would not be Orthodox—you should note that even before the Nicene Creed there were other creeds,

which the local Churches had formulated because heresies had already begun to appear. They did this both to safeguard the faith and to provide a brief confession of faith for those receiving Baptism. Remember also that when we are about to baptize a child, the child naturally has no understanding because he is an infant. The godparent therefore stands, so to speak, as the child’s representative and speaks in the child’s person—not as a substitute, but as the child’s representative. On behalf of the one being baptized, the godparent recites the Creed.

This is fundamental, because you cannot receive Baptism and are not accepted unless you confess the Orthodox faith. To provide a brief statement and confession, therefore, the local Churches had also composed these texts known as creeds. You know that a short creed is also found in the Book of Acts. There was no reason for it to be longer, because questions raised by heresies had not yet arisen. What is this creed? Listen; perhaps you have not noticed it. It appears when Philip the deacon

meets the eunuch of Candace as the man is traveling in his chariot—the well-known account. At one point, when the eunuch sees a spring beside the road, he says, “What prevents me from being baptized?” This man had come to believe, and he was also a member of the courtly aristocracy of Queen Candace. Candace is not a personal name. It is a title like Pharaoh, and she was probably the queen of Libya—probably. Candace, then, means the same sort of thing as Pharaoh, or Caesar in Europe, or Kaiser. That is what Candace means.

Philip replies, “Nothing prevents you, provided that you believe Jesus is the Son of God.” And the eunuch says, “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” That is the creed, the confession of faith—those few words. They showed that the person about to receive Baptism did not embrace heretical positions. With God’s help and with your prayers, my dear friends, let us begin the sixteenth catechesis. I should also tell you that the next catechesis, the seventeenth, likewise concerns the Holy Spirit. We therefore have two catecheses. They are quite extensive, because there is a great deal of material concerning the Holy Spirit. Paragraph one: “Spiritual grace is truly needed if we are to speak about the Holy Spirit.” This is a very beautiful proem, as it is called,

and we should always keep it in mind. He says that we truly need spiritual grace if we are to speak about the Holy Spirit. Although this sentence is only a very brief introduction to what he will say about the Holy Spirit, I would say that it could also serve as a summary of everything he is going to say about Him. Why? I will explain at once. How can someone who is without the Holy Spirit speak about the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity. How, then, could such a person say anything that is correct

about the Holy Spirit, always with salvation in view? For when we speak about God, we are not speaking in a merely theoretical way; our words concern salvation. How, I repeat, could anyone speak correctly about the Holy Spirit and avoid falling into blasphemy against the Holy Spirit—about which Saint Cyril will speak a little further on—unless he possesses the Holy Spirit? So it is, my dear friends, with every prayer we offer

to God. If our prayer is to be right, we must have the Spirit of God. If we do not have the Spirit of God, we accomplish nothing. That is why you will have noticed that the opening of every prayer we offer is “O Heavenly King.” This prayer is addressed to the Holy Spirit: “O Heavenly King, the Paraclete and Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, present everywhere and filling all things.” We invoke the Holy Spirit so that the prayer which follows may be acceptable. How can I ever call Jesus Lord if I do not have the Holy Spirit? The Apostle Paul says, “No one says that Jesus is Lord”—that is, God—“except by the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, anyone who does not confess the divine-human nature of Christ does not, automatically and by definition, possess the Holy Spirit.

So how am I to reach the Father? I will begin with the Holy Spirit, come to the Son, and then come to the Father. Christ says, “No one comes to Me unless My Father draws him.” Do you see? Through the Holy Spirit, I come to the Son. The Father draws me so that I may come to the Son, and the Son opens the way for me, because He is the Way. “I am the Way,” He says—the Way by which I come to the Father. In other words, I begin to know God and to acquire the knowledge of God; and when I possess the knowledge of God...

I possess theology. For how can I speak about God—which is what “theology” means—if I have no knowledge of God? And how can I possess the knowledge of God unless the Holy Spirit illumines and helps me? Would you like another example? In the Divine Liturgy there is a very characteristic point which, unfortunately, you do not hear, because the prayers are said silently. That is wrong, of course. Now, I know that someone listening to the MNKS will say, “Why is it wrong?” That is another topic. I believe that an important element in the liturgical renewal of our people is that the prayers of the Divine Liturgy should also be heard. I know that those listening now, or who will listen later, will raise many objections. Never mind. There are always opposing arguments. But what are the results? The point is that the prayers are the very heart of the Divine Liturgy. What is heard—the exclamations and so forth—is like the scaffolding around a building while it is being constructed.

But once the building is finished, my dear friends, we no longer need the scaffolding. Let us put it that way.

In other words, these things are secondary. The prayers are primary, not the exclamations or the petitions. “In peace let us pray to the Lord”—these audible parts are not the heart of it. I must enter into the Mystery of the Divine Liturgy, which is the incarnation—or rather, the continuation in history of the incarnation of the Son of God. There, in a mystical way—mystical, not secret—I come and unite myself with the flesh and blood of Christ. I unite myself with God and become what I am meant to become: a Christlike and Godlike human being, brought to theosis, who will be saved. Therefore, the prayers hold a position of great importance. Somewhere in the great prayer of the Holy Anaphora, at its central point, we invoke the Holy Spirit to come and change the antitypes of Christ’s Body and Blood—the bread and wine as figures pointing to them—into the Body and Blood of Christ. In the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great, they are called the antitypes which are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. Before they are changed, they are antitypes. They are types: the bread is a type of the Body, and the wine is a type of the Blood. But once the consecration takes place, we have the actual Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, not a type or an antitype. What do we say

in the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom? The priest addresses the Father, the source, we might say, of the Son and the Holy Spirit. For the Son is begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. We therefore address the Father and say to Him—the whole prayer of the Holy Anaphora is addressed to the Father, although in essence it is addressed to all three Persons of the Holy Trinity, but chiefly to the Father, as is evident—“We implore You, our Father: send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here set forth.” Immediately afterward we say, “And make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ.”

We have asked Him to send the Holy Spirit to change the wine and bread into the Body and Blood of Christ. But before changing the wine and bread into the Body and Blood of Christ, what do we ask? We ask that the Holy Spirit first come upon us. “Send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts,” we might say. The Gifts are mentioned second. For if I do not possess the Holy Spirit and do not receive what the Holy Spirit will change into the Body and Blood of Christ, what have I accomplished? First, then, I must become a suitable vessel in order to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. That is to say...

I must be Spirit-bearing so that I may receive the Body and Blood of Christ, while the Holy Spirit changes the antitypes into the Body and Blood of Christ. It is the same here, my dear friends. How can I speak about the Holy Spirit if I do not possess the Holy Spirit? How can you listen if you do not possess the Holy Spirit? It is impossible—truly impossible. You will distort these things within yourselves. Yes, then, we need the Holy Spirit. I say this by way of introduction because, if God grants and permits, we will explain and examine these two catecheses here as far as we are able. I pray for you; indeed, I pray.

How could I fail to pray? At every talk, of course, I ask God to illumine both me and you—both me and you. Otherwise, whatever we say falls into empty air. You too should pray for yourselves and for me, so that we may possess the Holy Spirit as the necessary foundation for speaking about the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril says: “Not that we may speak worthily—for that is impossible—but that, speaking from the divine Scriptures, we may proceed without danger.” He says that we do not seek to say something worthy of Him. What could we possibly say that would be worthy? Could we ever adequately express the worth and majesty of the Holy Spirit? How could that be possible?

Is it possible? “For it is impossible,” he says. “But that, speaking from the divine Scriptures,” we may go through what we have to say “without danger.” Thus, the material for what we will say—and fortunately Saint Cyril is our guide, because in the end, what could we ourselves say?—comes from a Spirit-bearing Father. His source is the Holy Scriptures. Why does he call them the divine Scriptures?

Why does he say “the divine Scriptures”? Because he also means the Old Testament. He will tell us this quite plainly a little further on, though at the pace we are going, I do not know—perhaps next time. I told you where he speaks explicitly about the Old Testament. I mentioned it during the questions—or, if you prefer, you will find it in the third and fourth paragraphs. So we shall draw only from the Scriptures. That is our source. We shall not rely on conjecture, nor on human inventions and the workings of the human intellect. Theology, of course, has much to offer here. And when we speak here of theology, we mean it in its secondary sense. Its primary sense is this: I behold God, I know God; I behold God, and then I speak about God.

That is the definition of theology given by Saint Symeon the New Theologian. In his Theological Chapters he says, “Do you speak about the God whom you do not know?” When I read that, I was seized with dread and discouragement—dread and discouragement. You speak about the God whom you neither know nor have seen! But theology in its secondary sense is this: I receive what is given in the divine Scriptures and, always with the spirit and fear of God, I consider what the Scriptures tell me—not rationalistically—in order to draw conclusions and offer them to others. This is what the Fathers did. Thus we also have theology in this secondary sense: now I engage in theology.

I do so by carefully considering the material. Yet do not imagine that, even in this second case, anyone could be without the Holy Spirit. It is impossible. Therefore, what we shall draw from our sources, we shall draw from the sources of Holy Scripture: “that, by stating what comes from the divine Scriptures, we may proceed without danger”—that we may treat our subject without danger. What is this danger? It is a dreadful danger. Listen: “For truly the fear is great. It is written in the Gospels, where Christ clearly says: ‘Whoever speaks a word against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.’”

“Neither in this age nor in the age to come. And there is great cause for dread, lest through ignorance or supposed reverence someone should say about Him what ought not to be said and so incur condemnation. Jesus Christ, the Judge of the living and the dead, has declared that this has no forgiveness. If, then, someone should stumble in this matter, what hope does he have?” For there is truly great cause for fear, Saint Cyril says, since this has been recorded and written in the Gospels. Christ has said clearly that whoever speaks a word—that is, a blasphemous word—against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

A blasphemous word, my dear friends, does not mean the ordinary blasphemies we hear in the marketplace. Ah, that poor marketplace! I do not know why we blame the marketplace, since people blaspheme in their drawing rooms, their offices, and their homes as well. What a shame! Yet the marketplace has acquired the bad name, and I fear we are treating it unfairly. He does not mean the ordinary profanities uttered against divine things. He means speaking heretically. If, for example, you say that the Holy Spirit proceeds also from the Son, as the Roman Catholics say, that is blasphemy.

It is blasphemy. The Holy Spirit does not proceed from the Son, but is sent by the Son. He proceeds from the Father as from His source, but He is sent by the Son. Understand this as well, in a few words: if the Holy Spirit also proceeds from the Son as from a source, then we have two sources. Without even noticing it—as the Roman Catholics refuse to recognize—we introduce belief in two gods. We introduce two first principles, because we now have two origins. I do not mean the dualism of good and evil taught by dualists, but two first principles and two gods. We begin, that is, with God the Father...

And with God the Son, with the Holy Spirit proceeding from both. And if I also accept the Holy Spirit as God, I then have three gods. But God is not three gods; God is one. God is one. This truth is preserved only if the Son is begotten of the Father and the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. Thus I have the Father as God, the Son as God, and the Holy Spirit as God, yet one God, because there are three Persons and one essence. Now, you might have a question, since this question has been put to me—but what should I answer first? There are also some questions that are a little dangerous. You may ask, “Can questions be dangerous?” Yes, there are dangerous questions.

Uh...

Today, in view of all that is being said and done in our relations with the Roman Catholics, we would say that this is not merely a matter of one simple dogma. The whole life and conduct of Christians flow from theology. Do not forget: where do you think the Christian life, the spiritual life, begins? It begins with the dogma of the Holy Trinity and the dogma of the Incarnation. The whole spiritual life begins there. Now pay attention while I correct something—not something I myself have said, but an expression that is commonly used.

Some people speak of a “theory of life.” But when we speak theologically, the term “theory of life” is inappropriate, because our life is not based on a theory about life. The widely used term “worldview” is likewise inappropriate, because our understanding of the world is not something devised by human beings.

No. Who made the world? God made it. How did He make it? In this way and that, as He has revealed to us. Therefore, our understanding of the world comes from revelation, and so it is not a theory. The terms “theory of life” and “worldview,” which began to be used some years ago, belong only to the realm of philosophy. They do not belong to theology. I say this so that anyone speaking or writing may bear it in mind: these terms are not correct here. Thus, when Saint Cyril says, “Whoever speaks a word against the Holy Spirit,” he does not mean ordinary blasphemy, as we said, but saying something false or distorted. And you know that this distortion is found not only in words, but also in the way one lives. When, for example, someone maintains that fornication...

This is a matter of life, as I said before—a matter of how we live, as revealed by the Gospel. What does the Gospel say? It says that fornication is a sin because it violates the Body of Christ. Which body? The body He assumed in the Incarnation. “Do you not know,” says the Apostle, “that you are members of Christ?” You are members of the Body of Christ. How, then, could I violate the members of Christ’s Body? “Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Certainly not!” This concerns the way we live. Yet what concerns the way we live has its foundation...

In the dogma of the Incarnation. If I do not accept that I am a member of the Body of Christ—a truth given by revelation—then unquestionably I adopt a way of life contrary to what the Holy Spirit has recorded in the Scriptures. Thus, in practice and by my deeds, I offend and blaspheme the Holy Spirit. Would you like another example? Do not immediately begin to think, “What a disaster! If we ever fell into fornication, does that mean we became blasphemers against the Holy Spirit?” Yes. Would you like even more precise proof from the scriptural passages?

A little further on in the same chapter, the Apostle Paul says, “Do you not know that you are dwelling places of the Holy Spirit?” This is another argument: he offers both a Christological and a pneumatological argument. Your bodies are dwelling places of the Holy Spirit, temples of the Holy Spirit. How, then, can you offend the Spirit of God? Do you see? Would you now like another example concerning the Holy Trinity—that is, the dogma of the Holy Trinity? The meaning of true fellowship, life together, and relationship with God is rooted in the dogma of the Holy Trinity. This is why Saint Gregory the Theologian, whose feast we celebrate today, says:

“What is Christianity?” This is a supreme teaching: “The imitation of the Holy Trinity.” Christianity is the imitation of the Holy Trinity. What does that mean? God is one essence in three Persons. What, then, does the imitation of the Holy Trinity mean? It means recognizing the consubstantiality of the human race—that all humanity shares one essence—if, of course, I believe the dogma of the Holy Trinity. It also means recognizing the many persons of the human race. Thus, within humanity there is one essence and there are many persons. When we speak of one essence and many persons, this is an imitation, a reflection, an image of the dogma of the Holy Trinity.

Can you imagine, then, what our relationships with one another ought to be? They should be relationships of love, just as the relationships among the three Persons of the Holy Trinity are relationships of communion and love. “The Father loves Me,” Christ says, “and I love the Father.” And because the Father loves you—yes, you human beings, My disciples—He will send you the Holy Spirit, not merely because I shall ask the Father, but because the Father Himself loves you and will send you the Holy Spirit. These are relationships of love. Tell me, then: if we distort the image we have of the Holy Trinity, do we not also distort our own life? Yes, we distort our own life. If I were to dwell on this at great length...

We would need to spend a great deal of time on it, so that one could see clearly and in detail that dogmas are not luxurious propositions discussed only by specialists and theologians. They are the starting points of our very life, of our relationship with God, and of our relationships with one another. This is a profound matter. If, then, I distort this image in some way on the level of doctrine—saying that it is not this way but that way—I commit blasphemy against the Holy Spirit in word. Earlier I spoke of blasphemy in deed; now I am speaking of blasphemy in word. “It will not...”

Here, “it will not be forgiven him” means that it will not be forgiven, either now or ever. But take care that we do not fall into despair. All these things offend God—the way we speak and the way we live. Who among us lives rightly? Not one of us. We are always offending God. In a general sense, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is what I described earlier. More specifically, however, it means consciously distorting the source of good and presenting it as a source of evil. To be specific:

The Pharisees acknowledged that Christ worked miracles. But how did Christ work those miracles? I have told you this and explained it: “By the finger of God,” He says. The finger of God is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has very many names. Saint Gregory the Theologian, whose feast we celebrate today, lists more than fifty names for the Holy Spirit in one of his theological orations on the Holy Spirit. He says that the Spirit has many names because He is beyond all names. Likewise, Saint John of Damascus says that God has many names because He is beyond every name. He has no name; He is boundless and cannot be defined.

For whatever I define, I also master. Suppose I begin by saying, “You know, God...” Or, to give a better example: “You know, I went to that factory and saw a machine. How can I describe this machine to you? How can I explain it? Well, it had one side shaped like this, and then another side...” When I begin giving a long description, it is because I do not know the machine’s name. I sit there offering many descriptions because I do not know what it is called. Since God has no name—for a name defines, and in philosophy a name always sets a boundary—then, then God...

God has no name, and therefore He cannot be defined. Because He cannot be defined, He has no name; and because He has no name, He has many names, which merely try to say something about God—only something. God, then, has many names because He is nameless, and this is extremely important. Saint Gregory the Theologian gives more than fifty names for the Holy Spirit. And Saint Symeon the New Theologian, in one of his most wondrous prayers to the Holy Spirit, also uses many names. What does he not call the Holy Spirit! He calls Him a purple robe, a girdle, and footwear.

A name for the Holy Spirit: footwear—a shoe. You may ask, “But what does that mean?” If we had more time—but I do not want to stray too far from our subject—how does he begin the prayer? “You are,” he says, “the ineffable Reality.” Ineffable: no one can utter who You are. What is ineffable cannot be expressed. What can I say of You? What name can I give You? Why? Because the Holy Spirit is God. You understand, then, my dear friends, that the finger of which Christ speaks, the finger of God that works the miracles, is the Holy Spirit. Christ now acts through His human nature, because the Holy Trinity...

works together—works together. “Let Us make man in Our image and according to Our likeness.” “Let Us make.” The Father then sends the Holy Spirit to work the miracles, to bring about the miracles that the Son performs through His human nature. And now the Lord says to the Pharisees: “If I work miracles by the finger of God”—that is, by the Holy Spirit—“how can you say that I have an evil spirit and that I perform these miracles by the power of Satan, the devil?”

What were the Pharisees doing? They were confusing the sources, and they were doing so consciously. Notice this carefully: in order to accuse Jesus, they said deliberately, “He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.” In other words, they claimed that Jesus was the chief devil and that, with the devil’s help, He was casting out demons. The Lord, of course, answered that if the devil casts out the devil, then the devil’s end has come. But He also spoke these dreadful words, which Saint Cyril records: whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. The phrase “in the age to come” leaves some room, as we also see...

in the matter of memorial services for the departed and related things. But what does “consciously” mean? It means knowing what something truly is and deliberately distorting it. That is a demonic state. Why have I dwelt on this for so long? You should never read books on psychology. You may say, “Then how is it that you read them and now tell us these things?” Well, I did read them. But do not read psychology books; they will confuse you. You will begin to believe that you have many of the conditions described in them, and you will make yourselves ill through your imagination. It is dangerous, especially for most people.

Specialists will read them, of course, but for most people they are dangerous. I am telling you the truth. Be very careful, especially those who tend to believe that whatever they read is happening to them and who soon begin going from doctor to doctor. So take care. There is a whole chapter devoted to this problem. Many people—and even some of you listening to me now, I know—are saying inwardly, “It is over for me. I am unforgivable because I have blasphemed against the Holy Spirit.” This subject is addressed precisely to emphasize that things are not so. The mind becomes stuck, like the needle on a gramophone record.

It keeps playing the same thing in the same groove. You cannot help the person by telling him that this is not what happened. “But I am telling you, I have blasphemed!” Do you know how many people come and tell me this? “I will not be saved.” My dear man, listen to me. Things are not so. And I beg all of you who are listening: go home in peace. Do not let some fixed idea take hold of you because of what I am saying. That would not be my fault, of course; I am not to blame. I am explaining this precisely to tell you that merely thinking something about the Holy Spirit is not this sin. Indeed, certain unclean logismoi—intrusive thoughts—may attack deliberately and flash through the mind like lightning, as John Climacus says in his twenty-third discourse. They come like lightning, too swiftly to grasp. A blasphemy against the Holy Spirit flashes through your mind, and immediately despair enters.

“I blasphemed; I will not be saved.” No, that is not it. Do not be afraid; that is not it. It is what the Pharisees did: the conscious distortion of the truth, deliberately attributing to Jesus Christ what should never be attributed to Him, and knowingly declaring that the Holy Spirit is unclean and evil. I underline the word knowingly. Do you understand? So take care that no one leaves thinking that he has blasphemed against the Holy Spirit. I can tell you that, even though I may not know you personally—it makes no difference—you have never blasphemed against the Holy Spirit. Since you come here, listen to the words of God, and have a sincere disposition, there is no such issue.

I underline this so that next Monday I will not be met by a crowd of people coming to confess that they have supposedly blasphemed against the Holy Spirit. This is not the case. Saint Cyril says, “And there is great dread”—there is fear—“lest someone, either through ignorance or through supposed piety,” say what ought not to be said. The Greek word “ho”—the relative pronoun, an omicron with a rough breathing and an acute accent—means “that which.” “Mē chrē peri autou” means what one ought not to say about Him, lest one “receive condemnation.” Do you know who else blasphemes against the Holy Spirit?

The person who is knowingly a heretic. Why do I add “knowingly”? Let me add this to what I said before. We certainly have heretics who return to Orthodoxy. Of course we do. And when they return, how does the Church receive them? With open arms. If they could never be forgiven, would the Church not know this? How, then, could She receive them? Therefore, because the Church interprets the word of God and receives them, it means that they had been led astray and had not adopted their heretical position knowingly. Why is this distinction necessary? Because heresy is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

How, then, can a heretic return? I repeat: because his heresy was not conscious. The person who knowingly embraces heresy will never return. Listen to the description given by the Apostle Paul. It is in the next-to-last verse of his Epistle to Titus: “Reject a heretical man after a first and second admonition.” After admonishing him once and then a second time, telling him that he is not on the right path, withdraw from him. Why does the Apostle say after a first and second admonition? First of all, he does not tell you to reject him immediately, because no human being knows another person’s heart. You will first test him and try to help him. He may simply have been led astray. But then you will assess and discern whether this person has merely been led astray or...

has already blasphemed against the Holy Spirit and can no longer be saved. The Apostle says to Titus, “Knowing that such a person has turned aside and is sinning, being self-condemned.” What does “has turned aside” mean? The Greek word is formed from ek, meaning “out of,” and strepho, meaning “to turn.” Together they mean to take a turn away rather than continue straight along a straight road. Allow me an example that has just come to mind. I remember a professor of ours teaching us something about radioactivity long, long ago and describing how it acts. It may be an old theory; I do not know. This was in 1949, if you like—a very long time ago.

He said that a cell begins to display a certain kind of behavior. Suppose ordinary cells behave in a right-turning manner. Cells affected by cancer—by radiation, I mean; forgive me, cancer caused by radiation—display a left-turning behavior. They turn differently. Those cells are now diseased. That is what we call cancer. What, then, is cancer in this case? I am speaking only of cancer caused by radiation, because he was teaching us atomic physics. What distinguishes the behavior of those cells? Their behavior is different. As I told you, if normal cells are...

right-turning, these are left-turning. This is only an illustration; do not take it literally. It was an image he used to help us understand that their behavior was different—entirely different. In physics, you know, we also use the hands of a clock as a reference. We say “in the direction of the hands of a clock,” or “in the direction opposite to the hands of a clock.” We all know how the hands of a clock move. How do they move? From left to right. But there is also the opposite direction. This is simply language used to describe certain phenomena in physics. That is all.

I have told you all this to show you what “to turn aside” means. I leave my proper course, display a different kind of behavior, and move in a direction opposite to what is normal. Thus, “such a person has turned aside,” from the verb “to turn out of the way,” means that he has adopted an inverted, different, abnormal disposition. Such a person sins of his own accord and is self-condemned. Therefore, he stands condemned. He will never be saved. It is dreadful. This is another image of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit given by the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to Titus.

I now come, my dear friends, to the second paragraph. The first paragraph concludes: “If, then, anyone should stumble, what hope could he have?” If someone turns against the Holy Spirit, through whom we are saved, what hope does he have of being saved? Since he has accused Him and turned against Him, by what means will he be saved? Is that not so? By what means could he be saved? Now, paragraph two: “May He Himself, then, the Giver of the grace of Jesus Christ, grant us to speak without stumbling and you to hear with understanding.” May He, then, the Giver of the grace of Jesus Christ...

grant us to speak without leaving anything out, and grant you to hear with understanding. “For understanding is needed not only by those who speak, but also by those who listen, lest they hear one thing but receive something else into their minds.” Understanding, he says, is needed not only by those speaking but also by those listening, so that they do not put something entirely different into their minds, but receive precisely what they have heard. This is what I was telling you in...

the preface—in the title, forgive me, in the preface. We truly must pray to God that we may listen rightly, not only when hearing teaching about the Holy Spirit, but in everything. For the Lord told us and warned us: “Take heed how you hear.”

“Pay attention,” He says, “to how you hear.” Each person hears things through his own mind and as he wishes. He misses a phrase because he dozed off at that moment, and then fills in the meaning with his imagination. He misses a word because he did not understand it, and again fills it in with his imagination. He gives that word his own interpretation and comes away with something entirely different.

This is extremely dangerous. It is precisely what happens when people hear something and pass it on: the next person adds something of his own and passes it on again, until in the end the message has been greatly distorted. Just today, for example, a lady said to me about something—some medicine, perhaps—“You said this and that.” No, I did not say that. Half of it was true. I said one half, and the other half was added by those who passed it along. So, my dear friends, we must be careful and have the honesty to say, “I did not understand.” I did not understand. Many times, even over the telephone, we hear something but miss part of it; then we repeat it to others as part of the telephone conversation, and what we say is not correct. It may be a piece of news.

Did we understand the news? We did not, and so we passed it on incorrectly. Did we hear something clearly and accurately? Then let us say, “This part I heard correctly; as for the rest, I cannot assure you, because I did not hear it well.” There is no shame in saying, “I did not hear it well,” or “I did not understand.” My dear friends, if this is how we conduct ourselves, then the Spirit of God will open our eyes so that we may understand the Mysteries of God—the things that will save us. That is all for this evening, my dear friends.

Είναι δυνατόν; «Αδύνατον γαρ», λέγει, είναι αδύνατον. «Αλλ’ ίνα τα από των θείων Γραφών ειπόντες», αυτά τα οποία θα πούμε από τις θείες Γραφές, αυτά να τα διεξέλθομεν, «διέλθωμεν», να τα διεξέλθομεν, «ακινδύνως». Ώστε εδώ η ύλη των όσων θα πούμε —και ευτυχώς που οδηγός μας είναι ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, γιατί τελικά τι θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε εμείς;— ένας πνευματοφόρος πατήρ. Η πηγή του είναι οι Άγιες Γραφές. Γιατί λέει θείων Γραφών;

Στο δόγμα της Ενανθρωπήσεως. Εάν δεν δεχθώ ότι είμαι μέλος του Σώματος του Χριστού, που είναι αλήθεια εξ Αποκαλύψεως, τότε αναμφισβήτητα έχω έναν τρόπο ζωής έξω από εκείνο που το Πνεύμα το Άγιον κατέγραψε στις Γραφές. Άρα λοιπόν, θα λέγαμε, στην πράξη, δηλαδή ἔργῳ, προσβάλλω, βλασφημώ το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Θέλετε ακόμη κάτι άλλο; Γι’ αυτό μην νομίσετε, θα λέει τότε κανείς: «Πω πω, συμφορά! Δηλαδή, αν πέσαμε ποτέ στην πορνεία, θα γίναμε βλάσφημοι κατά του Αγίου Πνεύματος;» Ναι. Θέλετε ακόμη πιο ακριβές από τα σημεία;

υπάρχει το θέμα αυτό. Σας το υπογραμμίζω, για να μην έχω την ερχομένη Δευτέρα συρροή ανθρώπων που θα έρθουν να εξομολογηθούν ότι δήθεν έχουν βλασφημήσει κατά του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Δεν υπάρχει αυτό. Λοιπόν, «και υπάρχει πολύ δέος», λέγει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, υπάρχει φόβος, «μήποτε ή από άγνοια ή από νομιζομένη ευλάβεια» να πει κανένας εκείνο που δεν θα έπρεπε να πει. «Ο», αναφορικό, όμικρον, δασεία, οξεία, «ο», το οποίον, «μη χρη περί αυτού», που δεν πρέπει να πει, «λάβει την καταδίκη». Ξέρετε ποιος ακόμη είναι εκείνος που βλασφημεί κατά του Αγίου Πνεύματος;
