Summary
Continuing Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture, the speaker explains why heresies spread quickly by flattering human passions, while truth requires free consent, repentance, and spiritual struggle. Christ’s Incarnation, death, Resurrection, and Ascension constitute salvation itself, because His enduring human nature opens the path for humanity’s healing, resurrection, and ascent to God. The lecture concludes that every Christological heresy damages salvation and must be answered through humble interpretation guided by Scripture and the Orthodox tradition of the Church Fathers.

My dear friends, there are still a few paragraphs left from Saint Cyril’s Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture, which, with God’s help and through Saint Cyril’s intercessions, we are continuing to examine. They are paragraphs 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33—or, if you prefer, only up to paragraph 32, because paragraph 33 is an epilogue, a brief summing-up of what Saint Cyril has said. In this section of the text there is only one subject, but he discusses it at considerable length because it deeply grieves him.
And rightly so, as you will see. However, we shall not examine this subject as we usually examine the text, sentence by sentence and word by word, because it is all one subject. Saint Cyril gives many examples to demonstrate that things are not as the heretics claim, but as the Church teaches. So as not to weary you, we shall dwell on only a few points from this whole passage. It covers two pages—or, as the book is laid out, one full leaf and a little beyond it. In paragraph 27 he says: “If you ever hear anyone saying that there is an end to the…”
“…the Word (Logos), having gone forth from the Father and then being taken back into the Father, no longer exists…” He then begins to present his arguments. First, let us consider the matter briefly. “You have heard,” he says, “of a heresy that arose, that sprang up, in Galatia.” Someone said this, and unfortunately heresies…
…are helped along by the devil, and for that reason they spread very quickly. They are just like dry weeds: a fire breaks out, and then a demonic wind blows and spreads the flames. That is what heresy is like. Nor is the example I have given you far from Saint Ignatius’s own words, for he calls heresy “the devil’s plant.” So this plant of the devil, this weed of the devil, catches fire when it dries out and spreads over vast areas. It has therefore been observed that heresies spread very quickly, because they have Satan as their ally.
If you ask me why the truth does not spread in the same way, I would answer that the truth certainly does spread, but under the following conditions. First, the wind of the Holy Spirit blows. There is a wind here as well, but it is the wind of the Holy Spirit. This wind does not come as a scorching wind that burns. It comes gently, as when a summer breeze begins to blow and you open your window and feel the fresh air. That is all. If it pleases you, of course, you leave your window open and enjoy the breeze. Ah, how beautiful it is!
But perhaps, for some reason, you have caught a cold, you are ill, or your throat hurts, and you do not want that cool breeze, so you close the window. What does this mean? It means that the Holy Spirit comes, illumines, refreshes, and spreads the truth. Yet for the truth to be accepted, the human will must consent; the person must say, “I want the truth.” But when a person is ruled by the passions and is enslaved to the passions and to sin, then the other wind comes—the demonic wind—which enters and fastens itself to the person like a leech. And yet, of course, the human will still plays a part, because no one can do anything…
God will not force us, for He made us free; but neither can the devil do anything without the consent of the human will. Yet when a person’s will exists within a climate and an environment of wickedness and sinfulness, that wicked will eventually turns toward heresy and embraces it. Perhaps I have now answered a question of yours: “Why does the truth not spread, while malice and sin do?” Consider the same question in relation to holiness. The wind of holiness is blowing. How many become saints? Those who want to, of course. But does everyone want to? No. Now consider the wind of immorality.
If the greatest prophet were to speak at this very moment, many people would go to hear him, but I do not know how many would go on to live a holy life. Yet if people heard that a highly scandalous film was being shown at a cinema, many would go to see that as well, and they would even try to imitate what they had seen on the screen.
They try to put it into practice, because man readily turns toward evil. So I am explaining why heresy spreads so easily. Accepting a heresy requires no effort. Moreover, heresy is distorted truth—truth twisted out of shape—and it often flatters the human passions. Take the millennialists, for example, when they tell you that Hell does not exist.
They say that the Resurrection will take place and the sinners will be asked, “Do you repent now?” Well, what do you think? Who would say, “I do not repent,” after experiencing both death and Hell? And if a person says, “No, I do not repent,” where does he go then? Not back to Hell, but into nonexistence. He becomes nothing. It is a lovely fairy tale. In other words, as the Apostle Paul says, it tickles the ears—it strokes and pleases them. The Greek word means “to tickle.” It pleasantly tickles the ears. What a delightful teaching! And then, very many people—truly, a great many—do not desire another life. They do not even desire the Kingdom of God. They say, “This is the only life. Should I not live it however I please? I want nothing more than this.”
Do you understand, then, why a person ultimately accepts heresy? But what is the truth? Hell exists; you will be judged, O man; and you must struggle. That is difficult. It does not flatter or caress you, and it requires effort and spiritual struggle. Tell me, then: why does the truth fail to take hold? Because it requires effort. Why does heresy take hold? Because it requires no effort. It is very simple; one can say it plainly.
Saint Cyril says: “You have heard of a heresy that arose, that sprang up, in Galatia.” What is this heresy? It is, he says, another head of the dragon.
In the Apocalypse, the dragon is revealed as having seven heads and ten diadems. A diadem is a crown. What does the crown signify? It signifies authority. The dragon’s many heads—the word “dragon” can mean a serpent, but here it also means a monster, a monstrous creature, since no serpent with seven heads exists—signify its many activities. It insinuates itself everywhere; it knows everything and sees everything. If one head is looking in one direction, another head is looking elsewhere, and another in yet another direction. Consequently, it has many…
…many eyes, indeed, and a great deal of intelligence, so to speak, because many brains are at work. The crowns signify powers. Wherever the devil gained a foothold, he also established his authority. This is what the devil does. That is why he appears as a many-headed dragon with seven heads and ten diadems. And now Saint Cyril says, “This heresy…” For they were already living through one heresy. Remember that Saint Cyril lived during the Arian heresy; he was its contemporary. Saint Cyril delivered these catechetical lectures in the year 350. The Ecumenical Council that condemned Arius had taken place in 325. Saint Athanasius the Great was still alive.
Saint Athanasius the Great died in 373. Conditions were dreadful. The Church was beset by danger. She was confronting this terrible head of the dragon called Arianism, which denies Christ’s divine nature and calls Him a creature. That is why Saint Cyril says, “Yet another head of the dragon has sprung up.” Which one? The heresy that arose in Galatia. Galatia is a region of Asia Minor, and it was to the Galatians there that the Apostle Paul addressed his Epistle to the Galatians. It is also said that a group of people once set out from this region and settled in what is now France. The French are the Gauls—the Galatians. That is the connection.
This heresy sprang up there. What did it teach? As you see, I am explaining its meaning rather than following the text word for word. I told you at the beginning that I would do this so as not to weary you. It taught “that the Word (Logos), having gone forth from the Father and then being dissolved back into the Father, no longer exists.” How did this man imagine the Word of God? As something that comes out from God, rather like my voice coming out from me now. My voice goes forth and reaches you; my word comes out from me. Suppose I needed to call out to a friend who was on the opposite side of a mountain…
“Hey, John! Are you there?”
Whether John heard me or not, my voice accomplished its task. That voice, reflected from the face of the mountain opposite me, now comes back. And where does it come? It returns to me, and I hear it again. I hear, “Hey, John!” I hear my voice returning. This heretic imagined the Word of God in the same way: He came forth from the Father, became man, accomplished a work—the work of mankind’s salvation—and then returned to the Father. Since the Father is spirit, and that which He sent forth, the Son, is also spirit, this would mean that now…
…in order to return, He leaves behind His human nature, abandons it, and goes back again. There, the Word (Logos), so to speak, entered back into the Father, and that was the end of it. It would be like the word I call out: it returns, my ears hear it, and then it falls silent. Nothing else remains. Therefore, according to this heresy, the Word does not continue to exist and could not have existed eternally. He exists for a time, performs an action, returns, and becomes—if we may put it this way—an inward, unexpressed word. “Inward” means existing within someone without being manifested. It is the word within me: I am able to speak, but I remain silent.
Do you understand what this heresy means? It is, so to speak, another version of Arianism. Another version of the same thing. According to it, Christ’s human nature ultimately amounts to nothing and is no longer needed. It was merely a means, a vehicle by which Christ came into the world and spoke to us; afterward, He had no further need of it. It is just as…
We ourselves may put on a certain outfit to appear somewhere on a particular occasion, and afterward take those clothes off and go back to our ordinary work clothes. Can you imagine such a thing? And you may say to me, “Well, that heresy sprang up long ago in Galatia, but it does not exist today.” Who told you that? Who told you it does not exist today as well? Let me tell you something from my own personal experience. Once, many years ago, I was traveling from Athens to Larissa.
A passenger sat down beside me.
We began talking, and he told me the following. He was from somewhere around Trikala. He said that when Christ rose, His body was indeed raised, since the tomb was empty of His human body, and the disciples had indeed touched Him. But when He ascended into heaven, His human nature dissolved of itself. It was no longer needed. Now He was going to the Father, and so the human body dispersed and dissolved. In this way, God the Word returned into the Father. This is what is meant by “having been dissolved.” To dissolve something means to break it apart.
So there we have it: this man told us that Christ’s human nature dissolved. Saint Cyril says, “having been dissolved.” It is the same thing. What, then, have we done? Do not forget where this teaching came from. When I said to him, “How do you know this? Why do you say it? This is heretical,” he replied, “There is an Evangelical man, a Protestant, in our area, and this is what he teaches.” “Do you realize,” I said, “how grave a heresy this is?” But ask the Jehovah’s Witnesses what they believe. Do they believe that Christ is in heaven with His human nature? No, my dear ones. They believe that Christ cast off His human nature and now exists without it.
That is, He exists as a spirit. They do acknowledge His hypostasis, His person, but they certainly do not confess Him as the Son of God in the sense of being from the essence of the Father. They say He is an angel, the Angel of Great Counsel. Remember this from Acts. Yet Isaiah says that this Angel of Great Counsel is “Mighty God.” Isaiah himself calls Him the “Angel of Great Counsel,” and a little further on, “Mighty God.” The Jehovah’s Witnesses see the one expression, but they do not see the other one that follows.
Thus Christ is regarded as a great spirit, but merely a spirit. He does not bear human nature. Do you know what that means? It means rejecting and demolishing the entire substance of salvation.
It is like dropping an atomic bomb on a little house. What would remain of that house? Nothing. Nothing at all would remain. That is what this heresy does. Let me explain. What does Saint Athanasius, whose feast we celebrate today, say? He says that whatever was not assumed—whatever Christ did not take upon Himself—remains unhealed. In other words, it is not saved. Therefore, for man to be saved, the incarnate Son of God had to assume both his bodily nature and his spiritual nature. This is why we speak in an Orthodox manner. And do not forget that Athanasius the Great is synonymous with Orthodoxy. When we say Athanasius the Great, we mean Orthodoxy.
Saint Gregory the Theologian said this in a funeral oration for Athanasius the Great: he is synonymous both with virtue and with Orthodoxy. What does this mean? It means that in Christ there are three realities: the divinity, united with the whole of human nature; and human nature consists of both the human body and the human soul. Thus, in this sense, Christ comprises three realities: the divinity, the bodily aspect of human nature, and the spiritual aspect of human nature—the human soul. For example, when Christ says, “Now My soul is troubled,” what did He say?
“My soul is troubled,” He says, “and what shall I say?” And when Jesus wept and groaned deeply in spirit, what did He rebuke? This happened in the case of Lazarus, when the Jews said, “See how He loved Lazarus.” Jesus wept, and the Lord rebuked—that is, He rebuked Himself; He groaned deeply and rebuked Himself. What did He rebuke? The divinity? That would be absurd! Was the divinity moved with emotion? Was the divinity troubled in the first passage I quoted to you? Or was it the spirit of His human nature—that is, His soul,
His human soul? It was His human soul that was troubled. It was His human soul. And therefore these passages—Glory to God—which abound in Holy Scripture, along with many others on every subject, always give us the measure of truth. Christ also had a human soul. Now, the Mystery is not only what kind of union exists between the divine and human natures. We need not look so far, my dear ones. Even the union between body and soul is a Mystery—a profound Mystery. I do not know whether man will ever be able to understand it. What kind of union is it? That a union exists is beyond doubt. But how does it exist? There are, if I may put it this way, two “materials.” I place both terms in quotation marks so that I do not single out only one of them. I even call the soul “material,” in quotation marks. Two “materials.”
Does one touch the other? How are these two joined when they are unlike in kind? And since they are unlike, what relationship or bond can they have with each other? If we cannot understand this union within every human being, how can we comprehend the profound Mystery of the unconfused union between the divinity and human nature? In the same way, we might say that the relationship between my spirit and my body is also without confusion. One is one thing, and the other is another. They are not mixed or confused, as materialism claims when it says that the human soul is energy according to the formula E equals mc squared—that is, mass multiplied by the speed of light squared.
Squared. That is not what the soul is. It is not. And so this will remain a profound Mystery. But there is yet another Mystery: although Christ is fully man, and although there are two wills and two kinds of knowledge—the human and the divine knowledge, or will—there is one person. This is the second Mystery in the reality of Jesus Christ: one person, one “I.” There are not two “I’s,” because if there were two, it would mean that the Word did not become flesh, but that the Word entered into a man.
You may say, “Now you are speaking about details.” Details? My dear ones, the Church struggled over these matters for entire centuries, and they form the very foundation of our salvation. Did not Nestorius say that the Theotokos was not Theotokos, the God-bearer, but merely Christ-bearer? He claimed that she gave birth to a man who was judged worthy, and then the Word came and entered into that man. This is a dreadful heresy. Our Church condemned Nestorianism. And Nestorius, mind you, was a Patriarch—the Patriarch of Constantinople. What, then, do we see? We see that this is a Mystery: the true human nature and the true divine nature are united in a mysterious union,
a union that is mysterious and incomprehensible. Why did He take on human nature? As Basil the Great says, it was in order to heal the whole human person. If, then, the Son of God came into the world, preached, and afterward His human nature dissolved, I ask you: where is salvation? Man’s salvation does not lie in moral teaching such as, “Do not lie,” “Do not kill,” and so forth—the things people say: “Do not steal; do not kill. I have not stolen; I have not killed.” Nor did He come merely to reveal God to us, so that we might possess a clear knowledge of God and know that God is Trinitarian.
That would be mere knowledge, so that we would no longer be idolaters. Who told you that this was the purpose? The Incarnation did not take place for that reason. Could not God have revealed these things just as He revealed to Moses what was disclosed in the Old Testament? Salvation does not lie in the revelations Christ might have spoken to us, however sublime or unprecedented they may be. Where, then, is salvation found? Salvation is found in the very fact of the Incarnation. As Cabasilas beautifully says, the things that bring about our salvation are neither Christ’s miracles nor His teaching. They are the things Christ experienced as man.
He died upon the Cross, rose from the dead, and ascended. What does this mean? He opened the way—a way that we ourselves will walk, because He, as the firstborn from the dead, became the firstfruits, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Listen to what the Apostle Paul says: the firstfruits, the beginning. For if Christ, the Son of God, had not become man, how could He have prepared and opened the way? Thus the Incarnation opened the way—not merely announced it beforehand, but opened it. This is the way Christ lays before us. Which way? The way of the Ascension—first of the Resurrection, and then of the Ascension.
We will walk this same way. But if Christ’s human nature dissolved, my dear ones, then it would be like someone opening a path across a snow-covered plain so that others could follow behind him, only for a great amount of snow to fall during the night and completely cover his tracks. Then a man asks, “Which way am I supposed to go now?” There is no way forward, because, according to this heresy, Christ’s human nature dissolved.
Were Athanasius the Great and all the Fathers of our Church foolish men? Did they struggle to the point of shedding their blood merely over theological and philosophical debates? No, these were matters of salvation—salvation in reality and in deed. I want us to understand this very clearly. Therefore, when we speak with a heretic, we must be careful. We must never accept heresy. Every heresy attacks either some part of our salvation or the whole of it. We must always be exceedingly attentive to this. And so, my dear ones, we have no salvation if things are as this heresy claims—if
Christ’s human nature dissolves and the Word returns into the Father just as He came forth from Him. Saint Cyril now asks, “Would you like to know how those who teach the contrary arrived at such madness?” “They read the Apostle’s good words badly.” They read what the Apostle Paul says—something very good indeed, in 1 Corinthians 15:25—but they read it in a bad way. Let us not forget that Holy Scripture is not at fault in any way. I might even say that perhaps
I once read somewhere—I think Saint Athanasius says it—that Holy Scripture is often deliberately somewhat obscure in order to test your humility. For if you are a proud person, you will give it your own interpretation, and then everything is lost: a rationalistic interpretation has entered in. But when you have humility, you will either ask someone, or you will say, “I will accept this as it stands. It does not admit of investigation; it is a Mystery.” Then you are in no danger of falling into heresy. So the Apostle spoke rightly, but those who produced this heresy interpreted his words wrongly. Which words? “For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.” Christ, they say, must reign until He subdues His enemies. Then, once He has subdued them, He will no longer reign; and since He will no longer reign, He will have no reason to exist. And do you know what their whole argument rests upon? The words “until He has.” How long will He reign? Until Christ has subdued His enemies. Saint Cyril now says, “O foolish and utterly senseless man!” Do you hear? Fools! As long as His enemies existed...
He reigned over them and utterly defeated them, and so He existed. But now that His enemies have been defeated, has He ceased to exist? Or is it not all the more certain that the Victor will continue to exist? Yet this is how they interpret the phrase “until He has.” And to show you how serious this is, there are other passages that clarify precisely this point. Another passage that causes stumbling says that Joseph “did not know her.” Holy Scripture uses the beautiful expression “to know” or “not to know” to mean having or not having marital relations with one’s wife. “Adam knew his wife.” That is, Adam knew her as her husband and came together with her, and she gave birth to Cain.
So this discreet expression, “to know,” means to come together as husband and wife. The New Testament says that Joseph “did not know her,” meaning that he did not come together with her. The man had taken the Theotokos as his wife, without knowing anything of the plan that God was bringing to fulfillment. “And he did not know her until she had given birth to her firstborn Son.” Until she had given birth to her firstborn Son. The conclusion drawn from this—a conclusion accepted by the Protestants, which is why the Protestants do not honor the Most Holy Theotokos; I mean the Protestants, not the Roman Catholics—is this: once the first Child, Jesus, had been born, afterward...
her husband knew her—that is, he came together with her. So what, then, does “until” mean? Does it mark a point in time after which something else begins? Saint Cyril explains this beautifully. He has much more to say here. Those of you who have the book can read it at home. But it all turns upon the same point, and I do not want to overwhelm you. You see that “up to,” “until,” and “until such time as” all mean the same thing. We might render them simply as “until.” “This expression does not impose a limit of time.” It does not mean that things remain one way up to that moment and then change afterward. It does not mean that the Theotokos is...
a virgin, gives birth to Christ in virginity, and then bears other children after His birth, as the Protestants blasphemously claim. What does it mean, then? The phrase “until” does not impose a temporal limit. It simply indicates a condition extending to a certain point—a qualitative condition, take note, not necessarily a temporal one. For “until” is not always temporal; it may also describe a condition. Saint Cyril gives this example: “But death reigned from Adam until Moses.” The Apostle Paul says this in Romans 5:14. Death reigns where there is law: where there is law, there is also death.
You transgress the law, and death enters. Death reigned, he says, until Moses. What does that mean? Does it mean that death existed from Adam until Moses, but after Moses there was no more death? Did Moses not die? That is not what he means. He is simply describing a qualitative condition, not setting a temporal limit. This is the fundamental error. Besides, why should we interpret “until” through conjecture while ignoring the many other passages in Holy Scripture that refute our conjecture? In the paragraphs I mentioned, Saint Cyril does nothing other than refute this conjecture...
and refute the heresy. I will select just one point from all this to share with you, since I have explained where this heresy began and why “until” does not impose a limit of time, but simply expresses a condition. Suppose I said to someone, “Please wait for me until I come.” What does “until I come” mean? I arrive and find you there. Must you then remain sitting there forever, still waiting for me? If the expression imposed an absolute temporal limit in that way, that would be the result. But no: I have arrived, and now we do something else and move on. It does not mean that you must remain there forever. The phrase indicates what happens until my arrival; after that, we go on to something else. My point is that the phrase does not impose the kind of limitation they claim.
The phrase “until He has” does not do so. Saint Cyril explains: “Listen,” he says to the catechumen, “to Gabriel saying: ‘And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His Kingdom there will be no end.’” What does this tell us, and where was it said? The Angel said to the Theotokos that the Kingdom of the One who would be born from her would have no end. How, then, can you say that it will end—that He will lay aside His Kingdom, cast off His human nature, and that the Word (Logos) will disappear? His Kingdom is His precisely as man. For the Angel says that the One born from her will possess a Kingdom without end. “Born from her” means according to His human nature.
When Daniel sees the vision of One coming upon the clouds of heaven as the Son of Man, what does Daniel say? He writes, “His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away; and His Kingdom shall not be destroyed.” It will never be corrupted and never come to an end.
“You have heard most clearly,” Saint Cyril says, “of the unending Kingdom of Christ.” You have heard it very plainly. Here I would like to say something about the meaning of “eternal,” because unfortunately this too has some relevance today. Heresy is like the Lernaean Hydra, with the devil’s many heads: whenever you cut off one head, another springs up elsewhere. His Kingdom, it says, is eternal; it will not be destroyed, and so forth. “Eternal” means something that has a beginning but no end. God, of course, neither began nor will He end. For this reason, in Greek He is not called merely aionios, eternal, but aidios, ever-existing without beginning or end.
Alpha, iota, delta, iota, omicron, sigma: aidios. On another occasion I explained to you the distinction between aidios and aionios, between “ever-existing” and “eternal.” The first distinction is this: aidios means having neither beginning nor end. Aionios, eternal, means having a beginning but no end. We human beings, for example, are not aidios. We had a beginning: we were born and came into existence. But we will be eternal, meaning that we will never come to an end. Consequently, when the Kingdom of Christ is called eternal, this means that it began at a certain point. It began with His Incarnation, with His human nature. It had a beginning, but it has no end.
For if the Kingdom of Christ is to have an end, then the word “eternal,” when applied to the eternal life into which man will enter, must also mean that eternal life will have an end. Can you imagine that? Do you see what this means? What does the Lord say in the final verse of Matthew chapter 25? “And these will go away”—the condemned sinners will depart—“into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Please notice the word “eternal.” The same word appears twice in the same verse. Can it bear two different meanings within that single verse? That is impossible.
Could Hell be anything less than eternal while the Kingdom of God remains eternal? Could that ever be possible? For if Hell is not eternal—that is, without end—then the Kingdom of God cannot be without end either. If Hell comes to an end, the Kingdom of God must also come to an end. And where would that leave us? God preserve us! We came into existence, entered history, struggled; Christ came and redeemed us; we entered the Kingdom of God—and then, at some point, God would say to us, “I have grown tired of you now. I am tired of you. I am starting my game over again and making a new world with new people—or perhaps not people, but some other kind of creature. I do not know what I will make.” And that would be the end.
The condemned would come to an end, and those reigning in the Kingdom of God would come to an end. Then, naturally, Christ according to His human nature would also come to an end. Do you grasp this? Do you understand? It can never be so. Even when examined logically, it produces an inconsistency and an impasse. Christianity would collapse into emptiness. Why am I saying this now? Because Origen was the first to give the word “eternal” a different interpretation when applied to the condemned and to Hell. And what was his basis? The love of God. In other words, rationalism—pure rationalism. Could a loving God maintain an eternal Hell? Therefore, he reasoned, it cannot be eternal.
Where do you get this from, Origen? You were an admirable man in other respects, but here you were wrong. Where do you get it from? You derive it from the fact that you cannot understand this. But the Word of God reveals it: Hell is eternal. That settles the matter. Why do you not accept it as the Word of God states it, instead of introducing your rationalism? You see how rationalism gives birth to heresy: the claim that one day God, precisely because He possesses love, will forgive human beings, the demons, and the devil himself, and that there will then be a restoration. This is the theory of the restoration of all things. Naturally, this theory is a pleasant fairy tale.
And this fairy tale, you know, is still repeated even by theologians and from university chairs. You hear it presented not merely as a teaching to be examined—as I am explaining it now so that you may understand it—but with the suggestion that things somehow ought to be this way. No, my beloved, things are not somehow this way. I repeat: if Hell is not eternal, since the same word and the same term appear in the same verse, then the Kingdom of God is not eternal either. And then Christ Himself, according to His humanity, is of course not eternal. These are inconceivable conclusions. What, then, does all this mean? It means that this heresy, built upon the phrase “until He has”...
collapses into emptiness, because Holy Scripture itself supplies the answer and shows that many other passages refute it. Christ will reign unto the ages of ages. The faithful will live unto the ages of ages, with no boundary and no end, throughout unending, unending eternity. And Christ does not cast off His human nature, because if He did, we would have no salvation. As the Apocalypse says so beautifully, those in the Kingdom of God will then see the face of Christ. Which face? “No one has ever seen God,” says John the Evangelist.
No one has ever seen Him, “nor can anyone see Him.” This does not refer only to the past; it also applies to the future and excludes even the future possibility of seeing the divine essence. “Nor can anyone see Him.” Then how will we see the face of God? “Lord,” Philip says, “show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” “Philip, have I been with you so long, and you still do not know that he who has seen Me has seen the Father?” How, then, can I see God? Through the human face of Christ. Therefore, the theoria—the divine vision—of the face of God is nothing other than the vision of the face of Christ. If that face were dissolved, what would I see, since it is impossible for me ever to see God in His divine essence?
These teachings lead to an impasse, my beloved. But let us finish here. In the few minutes that remain, we shall also bring the Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture to a close. I should tell you that the Sixteenth Catechetical Lecture, which with God’s help we will begin next Monday, concerns the Holy Spirit. I need say only one thing to stir your interest: spiritual life is inconceivable without the Holy Spirit. We must know everything concerning the Holy Spirit that has been revealed to us. What has not been revealed, we cannot investigate, because the Holy Spirit is God. He is the third Person of the Holy Trinity.
Let us therefore investigate whatever can be investigated, so that, by entering into the life of the Holy Spirit, we may truly say that we are living the spiritual life. That is what spiritual life means: not a spiritual life defined in relation to the human spirit, but a spiritual life lived in relation to the Holy Spirit. Do you see? This is an exceedingly important subject—exceedingly important. But now we must finally bring this lecture to an end. The Catechetical Lecture concludes as follows: Saint Cyril gives a very brief review of what he has said. Like a very good teacher, we might say, who conducts his work in an orderly way and organizes what he offers his listeners, he closes with a brief summary...
a brief review of what he had said. What does he say? “Flee from every heretical error.” Take care, he says—take care, because he is referring to what came before, as I told you. You must avoid every error. Flee; keep far away from every heresy. “And may the grace of God grant that what remains to be said concerning the faith may be spoken to you in due course. May the God of all preserve us all”—may He preserve you—“as we remember the signs of the end and remain unconquered by the Antichrist. You have received the signs of the deceiver who is to come.” You have learned the signs of the deceiver who will come in the future—the Antichrist. “You have received the proofs concerning the true Christ”
“who will descend visibly from heaven.” You have also received the proofs of how Christ will come. “Flee from the one, the false one; await the other, the true One.” Keep far away from the false one—the Antichrist, the false messiah—and await the other, the true One. “You have learned the way”—you have learned the path and the manner—“by which, when judged, you may be found on the right hand.” You have learned how to be found on the right hand when you are judged. Do you remember our discussion of this last time? “Hold fast the deposit of faith concerning Christ, shining forth in good works, so that you may stand before the Judge with confidence and inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.” But in the very, very few
minutes remaining to us, I will give a somewhat fuller explanation of this summary. My dear friends, take care. Do you remember how the catechesis began? With the renewal of the universe. There will be a new world. A new world will come into being. “New heavens and a new earth, in which,” the Apostle Peter says, “righteousness dwells”—that is, holiness. What will happen to the old world? It will not pass into non-being; rather, it will change and be transformed into a new world. There are many examples in Holy Scripture, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. The world will be made new. There will be no sin, nor will the present form of this world remain. It will be something else. What will it be? Only
God knows. But nothing will return to nothingness. God made this world as He did: He made the stars and the earth turn in the form of spheres, and He fashioned life on our planet according to the pattern of male and female. All these things will pass away. Yet neither the world—that is, the universe—nor man himself will be reduced to nothing. Man will rise again and receive back his former body, renewed and made new. There will no longer be Holy Matrimony in that new world. It will be the Kingdom of God, and then heaven and earth will be one. But these are the Last Things, the eschata. Before they come, the false messiah, the Antichrist, will appear. You remember how much we said about him. The Antichrist, of course, will not come from heaven. Rather, as John the Evangelist sees him in the Apocalypse, he rises from the sea—and the sea symbolizes the turmoil of this world. Thus he rises from the waters, from the sea, from the depths of the sea: from the depths of this world and “the depths of Satan.” The phrase “the depths of Satan” appears in the Lord’s letter in the Apocalypse to the bishop of Pergamum.
He says, “Where do you dwell? There where Satan dwells, where the depths of Satan are.” From the depths of Satan, this person, the Antichrist, will arise. The Antichrist will be a person, a real human being—one hundred percent. Take care: he will not be an ideology, as some have foolishly claimed, nor a theory or an idea. He will be a real human being. The false prophet, however, rises from the land. He is the one who will, so to speak, recommend the Antichrist and work on his behalf. The false prophet is both a person and, at the same time, theories, ideas, and conditions. He includes heresies and everything that turns man away from Christ, whether philosophical, political, cultural, or social in character. Whatever turns man away from Jesus Christ is antichristian; it is a product of the Antichrist—excuse me, of the false prophet. And the false prophet will also be a person. Yet he also includes the ideas, as I told you, and everything I mentioned earlier, all of which will lead in that direction. Freemasonry, for example, is an ideal vehicle leading smoothly toward the Antichrist, because it is idolatry, and idolatry leads easily to the Antichrist. What a dreadful thing!
Or consider politics, when people speak to you and say, “This is the way they want citizens to be.” Then, from another direction, they tell you, “One man must govern humanity.” They are opening the road to the Antichrist, because that is how it will happen. We must not believe any of these things. The Antichrist is a person. The false prophet is a person. He will carry out his dreadful work for only three and a half years. The Church will be persecuted mercilessly, and the martyrdom will be terrible. The Church must not worship him; therefore, to avoid worshipping him, she will flee into the wilderness. Then the whole Church—do not take this wrongly or misunderstand it—will have become one monastery. The whole Church. And the final refuge
of the Church will be the wilderness. The final refuge of the faithful will be the wilderness. It will be the wilderness. What would you say, then, about those three and a half years in the wilderness? Will you concern yourselves with having children? God forbid! Will we come together for pleasure? God forbid! It will be a place of metanoia, a time of repentance, so that we do not end up worshipping the Antichrist. Then Christ the Judge will come. The Resurrection of the dead will take place, and we will receive our bodies back. The Antichrist will be consumed by the Lord. The Lord will come as the Judge of humanity, and then the Judgment will take place. The godly will live with Him unto the ages of ages, while the ungodly will remain in eternal Hell
with the devil, together with the Antichrist and the false prophet. John the Evangelist says plainly that they will be cast into the lake of fire, which is Hell, unto the ages of ages. There is no end to the Kingdom of God, just as there is no end to Hell. But, my dear friends, may we remain steadfast and be found at the right hand of God—at the right hand of Christ, who will take us with Him. Through Him and with Him, glory to God, together with the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages. Amen. Thus Saint Cyril concludes. And thus we also conclude. May the Lord bless you.

Έλεγε ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος, σε έναν επιτάφιο λόγο για τον Μέγα Αθανάσιο. Είναι ταυτόσημος και με την αρετή και με την Ορθοδοξία. Τι σημαίνει αυτό; Σημαίνει άρα ότι ο Χριστός είναι τρία πράγματα. Είναι η Θεότητα που ενούται με την ανθρωπίνη φύση ολόκληρη, και η ανθρωπίνη φύσις είναι και το σώμα του και η ψυχή του ανθρώπου. Άρα λοιπόν ο Χριστός είναι τρία πράγματα. Είναι η Θεότητα, είναι η σωματική φύσις η ανθρωπίνη και είναι και η πνευματική φύσις η ανθρωπίνη, η ψυχή του ανθρώπου. Όταν, επί παραδείγματι, λέει ο Χριστός «Νυν η ψυχή μου τετάρακται», και τι είπε;
Δεν είδε ποτέ κανείς, «ουδέ ιδείν δύναται». Όχι κάτι που ανήκει στο παρελθόν, αλλά ανήκει και εις το μέλλον και αποκλείει την περίπτωση και τη μελλοντική. «Ουδέ ιδείν δύναται», ούτε μπορεί να ιδεί. Α, πώς θα βλέπουμε το πρόσωπο του Θεού; «Κύριε», λέει ο Φίλιππος, «δείξε μας τον Πατέρα και μας είναι αρκετό». «Φίλιππε, τόσο καιρό είμαι μαζί σας και δεν γνωρίζεις ότι αυτός που βλέπει εμένα βλέπει τον Πατέρα;» Πώς μπορώ να βλέπω εγώ τώρα τον Θεόν; Διά του ανθρωπίνου προσώπου του Χριστού. Άρα η θεωρία του προσώπου του Θεού δεν είναι παρά η θεωρία του προσώπου του Χριστού. Αν αυτό το πρόσωπο διαλυθεί, τότε τι θα βλέπω, αφού δεν είναι δυνατό ποτέ να δω τον Θεό;
