Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that mercy toward the hungry, sick, imprisoned, and vulnerable is essential, yet it must accompany faith, purity, and obedience to the whole Gospel. The parable of the Ten Virgins warns Christians to begin repentance and works of love now, because baptismal identity alone is an extinguished lamp without active faith. Everything entrusted by God must be administered wisely through good works, steadfast faith, and a life bearing fruits worthy of repentance.

My dear friends, we are still in the fifteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, at paragraph twenty-six. Last time we discussed two or three lines there, where he says that the judgment is fearful and that we must learn the way that leads to the Kingdom of God. That way is none other than what the Lord said: “I was hungry and you gave Me food.” “Learn the way,” Saint Cyril tells his catechumens. Learn the way. And what is that way? “I was hungry and you gave Me food,” and so forth. That is where we stopped last time, and now we continue, because there is something very interesting at this point. Of course, we also showed last time that this does not concern almsgiving alone. In its broader sense, visiting someone who is sick or imprisoned is also an act of mercy: I show mercy to my neighbor. Yet it is not only this; behind it stands the whole law of God.
Faith is there as well, and purity is there; everything is included. I say this so that no one will fall into a mistaken way of thinking. I cannot, for example, be a Freemason—which means that I have made my faith utterly useless; utterly, take note, utterly denied my faith and begun following something else, something that is one hundred percent idolatry and, if you will, idolatry in its very worst form—and then imagine that I will be saved because I perform good deeds, practice charity, and so forth.
We deceive ourselves. Nor can I give alms and be charitable and benevolent while living in fornication or adultery. Let us not deceive ourselves. If we do not keep God’s commandments, we must not imagine that we will be saved merely by concentrating on almsgiving. Great care is needed here, as we shall see further on, lest anyone suppose that almsgiving alone is the criterion. The Lord is simply speaking by way of example when He mentions these four, five, or six things, all belonging to the same kind and category. But if someone looks more deeply, he will see that behind these very things stand the whole law and the whole Gospel.
What is especially important is what Saint Cyril says next: “There is no need for allegory now.” Understand this; pay attention to it. “What is needed is to carry out what has been said.” There is no need to turn what Christ said into an allegory; we must put His words into practice. Of course, Saint Symeon the New Theologian does not sin when he interprets these things allegorically. He does not deny the literal reality of the Lord’s words; he simply goes further. Once you have accepted the literal reality of the word of Christ, then you may...
Develop it however you wish: make it an allegory, a symbol, or whatever you wish. Treat it typologically; make it an image—do whatever you wish. But at the primary level you must never deny the literal reality of the matter. This is extremely serious and is, we might say, a principle of the method by which Holy Scripture is interpreted.
Let us be specific. When we allegorize—and allegory means saying one thing while intending another—when we allegorize things that are plainly literal realities, we run the risk of failing to do what God commands, and thus of losing our salvation. It is very simple. Here God—Christ—says, “You gave food to the hungry, and he ate.” Who is the hungry one? “I am,” He says. “You, Lord? When did we see You hungry?” “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” There is no room for allegory here, simply because it means exactly what it says. So I ask: when He speaks of the Resurrection—the resurrection of the dead—is that an allegory?
For if we accept the resurrection of the dead as an allegory, I ask you: where does that leave us? It would mean that the body will never rise, the graves will never open—and where, then, will the souls be? And why, then, did Christ become man? For what purpose? Merely to speak to us? He spoke to us from Sinai as well. There would have been no reason for Him to become man. But He became man not merely to draw near to us, but above all to open the way for us, so that with our whole being, soul and body, we might reach the Kingdom of God. Can you imagine the devastation that follows if I accept an allegorical interpretation of the resurrection of the dead? And I must tell you that...
there are quite a few people—especially those who wish to move within idealistic and Platonic circles—who employ allegory in this way. By “idealistic,” I mean exactly what the word suggests: the idealism of Plato. They reject the Resurrection and regard it as an allegory. This is why our Church considered Platonism her worst enemy. It was in the person of Origen that the Church condemned Platonism. Do you hear me? What happened there? An attempt was made to interpret everything allegorically, and then everything was destroyed.
Hell can be treated as an allegory, and the Kingdom of God can be treated as an allegory. Then what is the only reality left? Nothing more than the fact that you see me and I see you. We were born, we shall die, and that is the end. Do you hear? We were born, we shall die, and that is the end—if we hold that Christianity can be interpreted allegorically. But Christianity is founded upon history. The Son of God—“the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” We have history, and history means an event; it means literal reality. I cannot interpret these things allegorically. Full stop. So you understand how serious this matter is. Let me give you an example. Christ was born. Where?
One thousand nine hundred and eighty-eight years ago, in Bethlehem of Judea, while Herod was king, and so forth. That is history. Now, once I accept this, I may also accept something further: Christ is born within my heart. We may say, “May your heart become a manger, and may Christ be born there.” What is that? It is a metaphor, or we might speak by means of allegory or an image. I have the right to do this, if I wish—to develop it however I wish—but only on the condition that I first accept the historical event.
Otherwise, if I do not accept the historical event, then the history of Christianity, the history of the person of Christ and of His becoming man, evaporates and disappears, and nothing remains. This is a danger, a terrible danger—and do not imagine that it is rare. It is extremely widespread in our time, in our city, in our country, and throughout the whole world. If you wish to understand what I am telling you, look at how the Gnostics speak. They may tell you, “I believe in Christ.” The problem is not only that they do not accept Him as God. That is not the only issue. In Freemasonry, where this very thing is found, there are also Gnosticism, Theosophy, and so forth. Broadly speaking, all these are forms of idolatry. But in reality, when they speak about Christ...
they do more than merely deny His divinity: they allegorize Him. When a Freemason speaks to you of Osiris, Apollo, or Hiram, he means the sun. He means the sun. What, then, is he doing? He is allegorizing. We could then say: Christ is the Sun of Righteousness; therefore Christ does not really exist, but the sun is personified in Jesus Christ, and that is why we call Him the Sun of Righteousness. Do you see how easily we can slip into error? It takes nothing at all. I will accept the events; I will accept the history. This is why I insist...
so emphatically as I speak to you. Saint Cyril continues: “I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.” He is not allegorizing! It means exactly what Christ says, exactly what He said. “If you, the catechumen, do these things, you will reign together with Christ; but if you do not do them, you will be condemned.” If you put Christ’s words into practice, Saint Cyril says, then you will reign with Christ. If you do not put them into practice, you will fall under God’s judgment, the judgment of Christ. “Begin doing these things now, and persevere in the faith. Do not be shut out like the foolish virgins because you put off buying the oil. Do not presume merely because you hold the lamp, but keep it burning.” This is a beautiful teaching, and I ask you to pay close attention to it. Begin, then, to do these things. Make a beginning. “I was sick and you visited Me. I was hungry and you gave Me food,” and so forth. Yes, my dear friends, let us make a beginning.
Everything has a beginning. Let us not imagine that these things are somehow strange or complicated. They are concrete things. Christ says this, this, and this. His commandments, too, are concrete. We must make a beginning. So I make an appeal—first to myself, and then to you. With the new year, let us make a beginning. Today I was delighted when a young person told me, “With the new year, I have decided to make a beginning.” He mentioned certain things in which he intended to begin. That is very good. My dear friends, let all of us make a beginning. At some point we must start. And persevere in the faith.
Someone may ask why Saint Cyril says, “and persevere in the faith,” since Christ did not speak here about faith. Who told you that He did not? First of all, He spoke about it in other passages of Holy Scripture, in the Gospel. He says that whoever does not believe in Him does not believe in the One who sent Him, and remains outside. But pay attention: who told you that the words “I was hungry and you fed Me” contain no faith? “Where is the faith?” you may ask. It lies in the person of Jesus Christ. This is evident; it is very simple. “Lord,” they say, “when did we see You?” That is a matter of faith. “When did we see You hungry?” Both those who fed the hungry and those who did not will ask this. “Truly, inasmuch as you did it...
to these brethren of Mine, the least of them, you did it to Me”—or did not do it to Me, according to the answer the Lord gives in each case. What does this mean? It means that I must accept that the other person is the presence and image of Christ. I ask you: why does the Lord identify Himself with that person here? Does He not identify Himself with him? When He says, “You did it there, and you did it to Me,” He is identifying Himself with him. For Him to identify Himself in this way means that faith is involved. I see you, and you see me. Who assures me that you are identified with Christ and that I am identified with Christ? Who will give me that assurance? Only the One who reveals it to me: Christ. He told us that He identifies Himself with human beings. Is that not a matter of faith? We are indeed speaking about faith.
You see that this is not only a matter of morality, works, or good deeds; it is also a matter of faith. But here Saint Cyril says something very beautiful: “Do not be shut out like the foolish virgins because you put off buying the oil.” Pay attention. He recalls the parable of the Ten Virgins, a most helpful parable, my dear friends, which we must always keep in mind. What does he say here? Do not imitate those foolish virgins; do not end up like them, “putting off buying.”
Do you understand where the emphasis falls? On the words “putting off buying”—that is, intending to buy later. For what did those virgins do in the parable? When the call came, all of them, it says, “became drowsy and slept.” This refers to the common identity of the Christian. All the virgins, both wise and foolish, possessed it. I have been baptized; I share the same outward identity as both the devout and the ungodly. What is this death? What is the sleep into which they fell? “They became drowsy,” it says. They could not remain awake waiting for the Bridegroom. What does this mean? It means death. We cannot remain alive until the Lord comes; we die. Then, somewhere in the night, a trumpet was heard: “Rise, the Bridegroom is coming”—the Archangel who will summon the resurrection of the dead. And then, it says, the five...
remembered that when they had lain down to sleep—that is, when the hour of death had come—they had not bought enough oil to go out with their lamps and meet the Bridegroom. So do not say, “I will go and buy it later.” You know, whenever the seed called “I will” has been sown, it has never sprouted. That is a well-known saying. Many people, indeed, have a whole theology of “I will”: “I will, I will.” No, my dear friends—not “I will.” I begin now.
Listen! Do you hear? I begin. I start now. For if I go looking for works of love at that hour—when? At the resurrection of the dead—the whole matter is over; the door has closed. Or at the hour of my death, what will I rush to do? If you wish, we may also see the whole image of the parable on a smaller scale, as referring to the hour of each person’s death. For the Bridegroom comes, my dear friends, at the death of each one of us as well. What will you hurry to do at that hour? What can you do? You are already in bed; your mind has gone, and sometimes it is completely lost. We are human beings; we may even soil our beds. Do you not believe that this can happen? We may lose our minds as well.
Can we perform a work of love then? That will never be possible. So let us act now, while we can—not tomorrow, but today. We must therefore have metanoia, repentance, but also works worthy of repentance. As Saint John the Forerunner says, “Bear fruits worthy of repentance,” for otherwise, “Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
Keep that image before you, I beg you. Indeed, John Chrysostom says something about this. In his day, it was customary for people to hurry to be baptized shortly before death, supposedly so that they would not sin afterward and would depart this present life in purity. John Chrysostom makes this striking remark: “Why are you waiting to be baptized when death arrives? That is not the time for the Mysteries”—meaning Baptism—“but the time for wills.” That is when a person makes his will, not when he rushes to become a Christian. Therefore, my dear friends, we must struggle earnestly in this matter. You may ask, “What must I do?” You will see a little further on.
“Do not take confidence merely because you hold the lamp, but keep it burning.” Do not assume that all is well simply because you are holding a lamp or a torch—perhaps that image reminds you of something. Pay attention: the lamp must be burning. A lamp is not only something made of wax; it can also be an oil lamp. The term refers generally to any object with a wick at the top from which a flame burns. The particular construction does not matter, whether it uses oil or wax. So what is this lamp that I may be holding, yet which remains extinguished?
It is my identity as a Christian. I was baptized. It is what we sometimes hear when we say something to someone and he replies, “Well, am I not a Christian?” That is no argument. Or people say, “We are Christians too. Why are you acting like some super-Christian?” When they see someone who is more devout and truly desires to live a spiritual life, they mock him and say, “Are we not Christians too?” You are, but you are an extinguished lamp, a lamp that has never been lit. What matters is not simply that you are a lamp, but that you are a burning lamp. And do you know what a burning lamp is? A little further on it says, “Thus let the light of your good works shine before men.”
Let the light of your good works shine before the eyes of men, he says. But should I not hide the light? The Lord said that we do not hide the light, yet this does not mean that I should broadcast my good works. Then what does it mean, and how does it happen? Pay close attention here. The light—or the burning lamp spoken of here—is not merely the good works themselves. What is it, then? The good works are part of it, because they prepare a person to become a place where the Holy Spirit may descend and rest—a field, as we said, a space and dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. That is what it means.
That light, my dear friends, is the Holy Spirit. The Lord told the person who performs good works not to broadcast them, did He not? Then how can the Lord also say, “That they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven”? How are these reconciled? Good works shape the person. When you are a person of love, when you give alms and are approachable, gracious, and helpful, do these virtues not leave their mark upon your whole being? Others should see your good works, see the person you have become, and find you credible. The Holy Spirit—the Spirit of God—has set His seal upon you, and therefore it becomes visible.
A devout person is recognizable from far away, just as an irreverent person is recognizable from far away. That is the point: people should see someone who is upright in his whole being. This does not mean doing what we read in the newspapers. Those of you listening to me, please do not do this: “Mr. So-and-so or Mrs. So-and-so donated five hundred, one thousand, or five thousand drachmas to the meal program of the Holy Forty Martyrs, or to that of Saint Constantine.” Do not do it. If you give to the home for the elderly, do not publicize it, I beg you. That is nothing but a worldly display. God does not want this. He does not. He wants us to do good humbly, without fanfare or publicity. And the person who does good...
and lives the life of the Holy Spirit is recognizable on the pavement, in the street, in a room, in the sitting room—everywhere. It shows. He is a luminous person. No, flames and sparks do not come out of him. He possesses something different. And the lady or gentleman who went to have a good deed reported in the newspaper is also recognizable. Such a person does not have the Spirit of God and is darkened. You may ask, “But how can we also learn to discern people?” Well...
A person must become like the one he wishes to recognize. If you want to recognize a luminous person, you must become luminous yourself. You cannot truly see the other person unless you yourself are luminous. We forget this. The luminous person, however, can recognize the one who is darkened. The darkened person cannot recognize the luminous person. He may cross paths with luminous people, but he cannot perceive anything profound in them. He may see only a little—not their full depth, but just enough to understand that this is a luminous person. And, if you wish, let me express it from another perspective, as the Lord says concerning the devout person...
The Apostle Paul says, “The spiritual man judges all things, yet he himself...”
“...is judged by no one.”
The spiritual man, he says, is judged, examined, and understood by no one. That is why I told you that we must become spiritual people; in other words, we must acquire the Spirit of God. Saint Seraphim of Sarov, my dear friends, in his interpretation of the parable of the Ten Virgins, tells us that the oil refers to the Holy Spirit, because it is the oil that produces the light. In other words...
The oil is the good works that kindle the light—that is, they bring and attract the Holy Spirit. It is not merely good works that will bring us into the Kingdom of God. What matters is whether or not we have the Holy Spirit; and to have Him, of course, presupposes good works. I say this so that no one imagines that if we perform good works and also have faith, everything is settled. No. We must become Spirit-bearing people. We must acquire the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril continues: “And let not Christ be blasphemed because of you.” This is the tragedy concerning Christians. A Christian will either be light...
or darkness. Therefore, if someone bears the name of Christian and is light, God is glorified. But if he is a Christian and yet is darkness, then Christ is blasphemed—or brought into disrepute, if you prefer. The root of the Greek word for blasphemy is associated with harming or injuring something. Thus, my dear friends, the name of God is blasphemed. The Lord Himself says, “Because of you My name is blasphemed among the Gentiles.” The Apostle Paul says this; God says it in the Old Testament, and the Apostle Paul takes it up in the New Testament. God says, “Because of you”—and to whom does He say this? To His people...
As we have said, the people of God are the Church. “Because of you,” He says, “My name is blasphemed among the Gentiles,” meaning among non-Christians. You know this; I have told you before. Gandhi once said, “Forgive me, the Gospel is very beautiful, but Christians are not beautiful at all.” What do you think? Could the Gospel not have spread throughout the whole earth and shaped all its peoples into Christian nations? What has prevented this? I do not think the chief cause is the devil or the evil intentions of certain people. I believe the chief cause is the bad example...
given by those who bear Christianity—by Christians themselves. We need not look far. Consider Greece. If there are atheists, unbelievers, and all the rest among us, what do you think has caused it? Our bad clergy. We priests bear the blame and the principal sin. The responsibility is ours. If the priests were truly spiritual people, tell me, would we see this phenomenon? There was also a terrible fall within the Church of Israel. What were the chief priests of that time, especially in the days of Christ? They were Sadducees—that is...
robbers. Those robbers believed neither in the soul, nor in judgment, nor in the existence of angels, nor in the Kingdom of God—nothing. Eat and drink, and then your life is over. At most, they treated God as a means of making life a little more humane while we are alive, and nothing beyond that. The Sadducees did not believe. And it was the Sadducees, mind you, who judged Christ. If, then, the chief priests and priests under the Old Law had been upright, would the people have become what they were? If the people had received the preaching and interpretation of the Law—that is, the Pentateuch, the Law of Moses...
and the Prophets—tell me, what kind of welcome would that people have given Christ? A very different one. This is what Christ said: “Not only do you yourselves refuse to believe, but you also hinder those who wish to believe.” He put it this way: “Not only do you fail to enter the Kingdom of God yourselves, but you prevent those who wish to enter from entering the Kingdom of God.” Do you not find that terrifying? Who was at fault? The people did not know the Law. The leaders themselves said, “This people is accursed because they do not know the Law.” You are the accursed ones, gentlemen, because although you know the Law, you do not interpret it for the people; you keep it to yourselves. If you had explained the Word of God, the Law, and the prophecies concerning the Messiah, the people would have followed. Would you like a small example? As soon as Saint John the Baptist appeared...
and began speaking about the Messiah, how many people went and were baptized! One man, Saint John, opened the way as the Forerunner of the Lord. If those entrusted with the Law had done this throughout the long history of the Jewish people, would things not have turned out differently? There lies the fault. The devil and evil intentions are not the primary causes; they are secondary. We are at fault—and I say “we” because I am a clergyman. We are at fault because we do not interpret the Law of God, or because, when we do interpret it, we often corrupt it. This too is a phenomenon of our time, because instead of conforming ourselves to the Gospel, we want the Gospel to conform to the way we live.
This is what the words mean: “And let not Christ be blasphemed because of you.” Do not let Christ be blasphemed on your account. “Put on the garment of incorruption, shining brightly in good works; and whatever you receive from God according to His providential ordering, administer it wisely and usefully.” “Clothe yourself,” he says, in good works and shine through them. Last time we spoke about what it means to clothe oneself, if you remember: it refers to our works, our deeds, and so forth. I will not repeat it. But now there is a new point here: whatever you receive from God according to His providential ordering, you must administer, organize, and govern it properly.
“Whatever you receive from God according to His providential plan, administer it wisely and usefully.” Whatever God entrusts to your stewardship, you must govern and administer well. That is what it means: govern it and administer it usefully. But what exactly is this referring to?
The word means “providentially.” It does not refer to economics or money in the ordinary sense, just as when we speak of the Mystery of the Divine Economy. It is not about financial matters, but about what God orders according to His providence. Do you understand what he means now? It is something that I arrange and care for, something I plan for a particular purpose. That is the meaning here.
If God gives you a talent, he says, you must use it profitably. How does he put it here? “Administer it.” “Administer it usefully.” Use it, manage it, apply it, put that talent of yours to good use. “Have you been entrusted with money?” Has God entrusted you with money—now in the ordinary financial sense, money and wealth? “Administer it well.” In other words, take care to be above reproach as a steward. “Have you been entrusted with the word of teaching?” Has God entrusted you with the gift of speaking and teaching? “Fulfill this diligently. Steward well the souls of those who hear you; save them to the extent of your ability.”
Do this diligently. If you can help souls toward salvation, do it with proper care. “There are many doors leading to good stewardship; only take care that you are not condemned on any account and cast out.” There are many doors, he says, many ways to exercise good stewardship. Only be careful that you do not stand accused and be cast out. At this point, my dear friends, I would like to say a few things. These are the talents God has given us. Do you know what a talent means? We also have the parable of the talents in Holy Scripture, and its meaning is precisely what Saint Cyril is saying here. I too will speak about it, and we shall examine it more closely. Thank you.
At Matins (Orthros) on Great and Holy Tuesday, the Church speaks about the talents. There is a beautiful troparion which says: “My Lord, do not condemn me if I fail to make good use of the talents; help me to use them well.” It then refers to the particular talents. If I have the talent of speech, it says, or the talent of charity or service, then: “Lord, help me to put whatever I have into action and make use of it.” No human being is without a talent. In ancient times, the talent was a unit of currency...
It was not used only by the Greeks. It was usually gold, though it could also be silver, depending on the place and period. It was heavy—an entire talent was extremely heavy. It may have weighed about twenty kilograms. I cannot tell you the exact weight at this moment; I do not remember it. But it was very heavy. A poor man, of course, could not possess a talent. Even a rich man who possessed one talent would, in terms of euros, have been exceedingly wealthy. When we call someone “talented,” the word originally suggested someone who possessed great wealth—someone extremely rich. The talent existed as a unit of currency among many peoples, including the Hebrews. But, as I told you, in some periods it was larger and in others smaller; sometimes it was gold and sometimes silver, and so forth.
That is the background of the parable of the talents. When you were baptized, my brother, and God made you His child—for what is Baptism? It is adoption—He endowed you with gifts, just as you provide an inheritance for your children, both sons and daughters. Is that not an endowment? You give them your fields, your money, your shop, or your business. If you give these things to your sons, is that not an inheritance? What do you sometimes tell your children? “Look, we have nothing at all. You must build whatever life you can for yourselves.” If the circumstances of our life are difficult, we may have to say this to our children. Yet under good and favorable circumstances, can we not give them something? Of course we can.
A small piece of land, perhaps, or one thing or another—we give them something. We provide an inheritance for both our sons and our daughters. If we human beings endow our children, then tell me: would the infinitely rich God, to whom everything belongs—the whole universe and all creation—not enrich His children? Would He not endow them with gifts? You may say, “But we shall inherit His Kingdom.” Yet He begins to endow us even in this present life. These are what we have called the talents. We now understand these talents metaphorically. They are not money, of course, but what we call gifts of grace. When, after our Baptism, the priest anoints the newly baptized person with Holy Chrism...
Do you know what actually happens? That person receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit. In the beginning, the Church could not conceive of a Christian without gifts—one or more of them. For example, when the Apostle Paul speaks to the Corinthians in his First Epistle, he concludes the twelfth chapter by saying, in effect: “What gifts are you eagerly seeking? Those of speaking in many languages—speaking in tongues and other languages? I shall tell you what to choose: the talent of love.” Of course, he had already mentioned many other gifts. There is the talent, the gift of healing, by which you heal another person. There is also the gift of governance. What is governance? It is the ability to administer and lead.
Is it easy to govern human beings? It is a formidable task. Man is a living creature difficult to govern—and by “creature” we simply mean a living being. Oh, it is a formidable thing to govern people! There is nothing more daunting. The ability to govern people in the right way is a talent, because one must know how to do it. This is a gift, along with so many other gifts. So when the Apostle Paul says these things to the Corinthians, my dear friends, he does not mean that some people should possess gifts while others have none. Indeed, he says: “I tell you, earnestly desire the greater gifts, and I will show you a still more excellent way.” Then he speaks about love. Tell me, please...
Which of you has the gift of healing? You will tell me, “None of us.” Who has the gift of possessing money and managing it well? For money, too, requires good stewardship. Who, the Gospel asks, is the faithful steward? “Faithful” means trustworthy: one who gives the servants their allotted food at the proper time and in the proper amount. This too is a gift, both metaphorically and literally, and so on. You will say, “We are poor.” Very well, are you poor? Are we poor? And do we also lack the gift of healing? Do we lack the gift of governing? First of all, I would ask you: Have you tried? Have you actually discovered this? Are you certain? If you tell me, “We are certain,”...
then here is one gift that all of us can possess: the gift of love. The gift of love. And why is it so exceedingly important? Because if I possess the gift of healing, that gift alone does not bring me into the Kingdom of God. As the Apostle Paul says, the gifts build up the Church. But if I possess the gift of love, then through this gift I both build up the Church and enter the Kingdom of God. Do you see? There is no one without a gift—that is, without the ability to make fruitful use of what God has placed within him. Love is a gift, just as faith is a gift. The gifts are countless. Do you know how many there are? It is like entering a supermarket and finding everything your heart could desire.
The gifts within the human soul are just as abundant. One person has the gift of becoming a scientist, while another has the gift of digging the earth. Not everyone can become a scientist, but neither can everyone dig. It is a gift. We have bodily gifts, intellectual gifts, and emotional gifts. Not everyone can become a nurse, a doctor, or a social worker—professions often taken up by women—unless that person has compassion and sensitivity. Then there are the spiritual gifts in the narrower sense: those that belong specifically to the Christian life.
The other gifts may also be found in people outside the Church. Why? Did God first give gifts to man only when man was baptized? No. When He created the human being, He endowed him with gifts then as well. If you tell me, “But I find gifts even among those outside the Church,” yes, those gifts are the endowment given to human nature as such. Yet this endowment is elevated, and its value increases, from the moment you become a beloved child of God through Baptism. You see, then, my dear friends, that the matter of spiritual gifts is extremely important, although perhaps we have not paid enough attention to it. And remember the servant in the parable of the talents who went and hid his talent. The first servant said, “Lord, You gave me five, and I have gained five more.” What did the lord in the parable say? The servant had put the talents to work; he had made fruitful use of them. What does the passage say?
“Lord, the five have become ten.” Well done! “Good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things; I will now set you over many things—over many.” And notice this: “Enter into the joy of your lord.” What is this joy of the Lord? It is the Kingdom of God, for the Kingdom of God also bears this name: joy, the joy of the Lord. The servant who received two said, “Lord, the two have become four.” Well done to you also! We see, then, that the talents are distributed in different ways. Not everyone receives the same number or the same kind. The third servant received one. He could have said, “Lord, the one has become two.”
Instead, he said, “I know You.” Ah, these are the people who make accusations against God in order to conceal their own laziness and wretched disposition—forgive me; sometimes I speak this way. “I know that You are a hard man. You seek to reap where You did not sow and to gather where You did not scatter.”
That is what he says. “Therefore, because I know that You are harsh, I was afraid You would demand an account from me. So, to avoid losing the talent, I went and hid it in the ground. Now that You have returned to ask for it, I have dug it up and give it back to You. Take Your talent.” “You wicked servant,” the lord says. Do you see? “You wicked servant.”
“You thought that I seek to reap where I did not sow and to gather where I did not scatter. You ought to have deposited my talent with the bankers, so that when I returned I might receive it back with interest.” Of course, the image and its details are drawn from human life—from bankers, interest, and so forth. But notice the punishment here: “Cast him,” he says, “into the depths of Hell.” Why? Was he not honest? “You gave me one talent, and I return one talent to You.” Was he not honest? If, my dear friends, this servant honestly preserved the talent...
returned it, and yet suffered such a terrible punishment and was called a wicked servant, then tell me, please: if he had misused the talent as well, squandering it here and there in a life of dissipation, what condemnation would he have received from his lord? And who says that we are not now wasting our own talents, like the prodigal son who squandered his father’s property? The father’s “substance” here means his possessions, and those possessions are the talents. He consumed his father’s talents in sin. God gives you the talent of intelligence, and you take it and use it to write pornographic stories.
God gives you artistic talent, and you use your art to corrupt people, or for some other evil purpose. That is what misuse means: the misuse of the talents God has given you. What account shall we give if we misuse these talents? As you see, then, this is a serious matter. And although John Chrysostom says that we should not look here for literal bankers and interest—these details serve to form the parable—we might still offer the following interpretation, if you are willing to accept it. You possess a talent but are unable to exercise it properly. If you hold a post or occupy a position, then at least, if you have the courage, go and say: “I am not worthy of this position. I resign and step aside. Let someone who has the talent take it.”
I do not know who would actually do this, my dear friends. It is a matter of basic honesty. You may be in charge of something, or managing something, yet you are not managing it well. You should say, “I am not qualified. You placed me here, but I can see that I am not up to the task. So let me step aside and let someone worthy take my place.” For when the master comes, he will expect not only his talent back, but also its fruit and interest. In other words, he will receive more than I would have given him if I had returned only his talent. This, as I have said, is one simple way of understanding it. The point is that we have all been given an inheritance; we all have gifts, each in a different way. Do you have the gift of offering comfort? Then comfort someone who is suffering.
Do you have the gift of strong legs? Go up and down a few flights of stairs in government offices and the like, and help take care of someone else’s business. Do you have connections through which you can help resolve a situation? Then do it. All these things are talents—yes, talents. But above all stands the talent of love.
“For He who judges the living and the dead reigns unto the ages, having died for the living and the dead. And as Paul says, ‘For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.’” So, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says, when you put all these things into action—when you begin today and set to work in what is called the labor of keeping the commandments—then you will live with Christ; you will live eternally with Christ. For Christ came, died, and lived again for this very purpose: to be Lord of both the living and the dead, and to judge everyone. My dear friends, as we bring this to a close, we too should say:
Let us all make a beginning. Today, if my memory does not fail me, is January 11, only a few days after the beginning of the new year. As I wished for you yesterday, this should become a starting point for certain endeavors. These new beginnings may take many forms in our lives: buying a house, or, if I am a student, becoming a better student. But take care: all these things are good, yet above all stands the work of our salvation. So, with the new year, let us set to work on our salvation, with God’s help. May the Lord bless you.

Συγκεκριμένα. Συγκεκριμένα, όταν κάνουμε αλληγορία —αλληγορία θα πει άλλα λέγω και άλλα εννοώ, αυτό θα πει αλληγορία— όταν κάνουμε αλληγορία πράγματα που είναι σαφώς ρεαλιστικά, κινδυνεύουμε να μην πραγματοποιήσουμε εκείνο που λέει ο Θεός, με αποτέλεσμα να χάσουμε τη σωτηρία μας. Είναι πάρα πολύ απλό. Γι’ αυτό, όταν λέγει εδώ ο Θεός, λέει ο Χριστός, «Εδώσατε στον πεινασμένο κι έφαγε». Ποιος είναι ο πεινασμένος; Εγώ, λέει. Εσύ, Κύριε; Πότε σε είδαμε να πεινάς; Εφόσον το κάνατε σε έναν από τους αδελφούς μου αυτούς, τους ελαχίστους, ἐμοὶ ἐποιήσατε. Το κάνατε σε μένα. Εδώ δεν χωράει καμία αλληγορία. Απλούστατα, διότι είναι ό,τι λέγει. Ερωτώ: όταν μιλάει για την Ανάσταση, Ανάσταση των νεκρών, είναι αλληγορία αυτό;
Κόλαση μπορεί να θεωρηθεί αλληγορία και η Βασιλεία του Θεού μπορεί να θεωρηθεί αλληγορία. Και η μόνη πραγματικότητα που θα είναι, ποια θα είναι; Δεν θα είναι παρά αυτό που με βλέπετε και αυτό που σας βλέπω. Γεννηθήκαμε και θα πεθάνουμε και τελειώσαμε. Ακούσατε; Γεννηθήκαμε και θα πεθάνουμε και τελειώσαμε. Αν πάρουμε ότι ο Χριστιανισμός δύναται να ερμηνευτεί αλληγορικώς. Έχουμε ιστορία, βασικά. Ο Υιός του Θεού, «ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν». Έχουμε ιστορία και η ιστορία θα πει γεγονός, θα πει ρεαλισμό, και δεν μπορώ να ερμηνεύω τα πράγματα αυτά αλληγορικά. Τελεία. Οπότε καταλαβαίνετε το πράγμα πόσο σοβαρό είναι. Να σας πω ένα παράδειγμα. Ο Χριστός γεννήθηκε. Πού;
«Μὴ θαρσήσῃς ὅτι μόνον κατέχεις τὴν λαμπάδα, ἀλλὰ διατήρησον αὐτὴν καιομένην». Μη πάρεις το θάρρος ότι κρατάς τη λαμπάδα ή τη λαμπαδούρα, αν το θέλετε, κάτι μπορεί να σας θυμίζει αυτό. Αλλά προσέξτε, να καίει η λαμπάδα. Λαμπάς δεν είναι βεβαίως μόνο αυτό που είναι φτιαγμένο με κερί, είναι και ο λύχνος ακόμη. Με μια γενική ονομασία λέγεται το σώμα εκείνο το οποίο έχει από πάνω μια θρυαλλίδα, ένα φυτίλι, και βγαίνει φλόγα. Δεν έχει σημασία πώς αυτή η κατασκευή μπορεί να είναι. Με λάδι, με κερί, δεν έχει σημασία. Τι είναι αυτή η λαμπάδα που μπορώ να κρατώ, αλλά σβησμένη;
«Ὃ λαμβάνεις παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ οἰκονομικῶς, διοίκησον χρησίμως». Ό,τι οικονομικά σου αναθέτει ο Θεός, να το κυβερνήσεις, να το διοικήσεις. Αυτό λέει, χρησίμως να το κυβερνήσεις, να το διοικήσεις. Τι είναι αυτό;
Τα άλλα μπορεί να τα βρούμε και στους άλλους ανθρώπους, παραέξω. Γιατί; Γιατί ο Θεός, άμα δημιούργησε τον άνθρωπο... μόνο όταν βαπτίστηκε; Άμα δημιουργήθηκε, του έδωσε πάλι προίκα. Γιατί αν μου πείτε «μα εγώ βρίσκω χαρίσματα και στους απέξω της Εκκλησίας», ναι, είναι η προίκα σε αυτό που λέγεται άνθρωπος. Η προίκα όμως ανεβαίνει, η αξία της ανεβαίνει, από τη στιγμή που γίνεσαι παιδί του Θεού αγαπημένο, βαπτίζεσαι. Βλέπετε, λοιπόν, αγαπητοί, ότι το θέμα των χαρισμάτων είναι πάρα πολύ σπουδαίο, το οποίον ίσως δεν έχουμε προσέξει. Και μην νομίζετε, εκείνος στην παραβολή των ταλάντων, εκείνος που πήγε, ο δούλος, λέει, το ’κρυψε. Ο πρώτος: «Πέντε, λέει, μου έδωσες, Κύριε, άλλα πέντε έκανα». Τι είπε ο κύριος της παραβολής; Τα δούλεψε τα τάλαντα, δηλαδή τα αξιοποίησε. Τι λέει εκεί;
