Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that at Christ’s Second Coming the angels will gather the elect impartially from every place and condition of life. The examples of two people in one bed, at one mill, or in one field show that even those who are closest may face different eternal outcomes. Every prayer, psalm, act of mercy, fast, faithful marriage, and voluntary act of self-restraint undertaken for God is remembered, though additional ascetic practices must not be imposed proudly upon others.

We are still in Saint Cyril’s Fifteenth Catechesis, paragraph 23. As you will remember, last time we said that the angels will gather the elect from the four corners of the earth, as it says here: “And they will gather together His elect from the four winds.” This, of course, is not arbitrary; it is recorded as spoken by the Lord in Matthew, chapter 24, verse 31. This shows us, my dear ones, that the angels will gather the elect without discrimination.
Now paragraph 23: “But someone present may say.” In other words, someone here listening to the catechesis might say: “I am poor; or perhaps at that time I shall be found sick upon a bed; or I may be a woman found working at a mill. Will we perhaps be overlooked?” This is, of course, a very narrow way of thinking. Someone might say, “I am a poor man. Will the angels gather me too?” Or perhaps at that time—for he is speaking specifically about the moment when Christ comes into the world—
There will be people alive then. Pay attention: there certainly will be people. The dead will rise, while those who are alive will not die but will be changed. The Apostle Paul says this very clearly. He says it most clearly in chapter 15 of First Corinthians, concerning the resurrection of the dead. “We shall be changed,” he says. We shall be changed. “We shall not precede those who have fallen asleep,” as he says in his First Epistle to the Thessalonians. And again: “For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality,” and so forth. This means that people will be alive in the condition in which we find ourselves at this very moment. Imagine, in other words, that Christ comes now.
There are poor people. Are there not also sick people? So I say, “I am poor”—“I am a poor man.” Will the angels choose me too? Or perhaps I will then be found sick in bed? Or perhaps I am a woman whose work is in a millhouse. The Greek word mylon means the building constructed around a mill—the little millhouse. Think of the mills of that time, powered either by water, as watermills, or by wind, as windmills. Was not the whole mechanism of the mill housed inside a shed or little building? That building is called a mylon, and that is where the woman works.
Uh...
“Will we perhaps be overlooked?” Will the angels not find us there? This is a naïve idea, my dear ones, but Saint Cyril certainly wished to address it, because a simple person might wonder, “Where will the angels find me?” “Take courage, O man. The Judge shows no partiality.” Christ is not a respecter of persons. He will not come and ask whether you are poor or rich, or whether you are healthy. “He does not judge according to outward status, nor will He examine you by the way you speak.” Neither will He call you to account because you have a Thessalian accent rather than an Athenian one.
Perhaps you speak Vlach, for all I know, and do not know Greek. Such things do not matter. Do you hear, my dear ones? Such things do not matter. They are refuse belonging to this present age. “He does not prefer the learned over the uneducated.” The word idiotes then meant an uneducated person. That is what uneducated people were called. He does not prefer the learned—that is, the educated—over the uneducated. “Nor the rich over the poor.” Christ does not prefer the rich over the poor. “Even if you are in a field, the angels will take you,” provided that you are devout.
“Do not suppose that He takes the landowners but leaves you, the farm laborer, behind.” The Greek word geouchos means someone who possesses land—what we would call a landowner today, someone who owns fields. Geouchos means one who has land. It is a fine word. The farm laborer, on the other hand, owns no property but simply goes to work for a daily wage in the fields of the landowner. So do not imagine that, because you are a farm laborer and own no land, the angels will take the landowner and leave you behind. “And leave you, the farm laborer, behind.” No.
“Even if you are a slave, even if you are poor, do not be anxious. He who took the form of a servant does not despise servants. Even if you lie sick upon a bed, it is written,” and so forth. Do not be afraid. You may be sick, poor, or a slave; such distinctions do not matter. Here Saint Cyril uses something from Holy Scripture that the Lord Himself said. Christ Himself said it, and I ask you to pay close attention. Write down what is written and where it is written: Luke 17:34.
No, it is likewise in Matthew, not only in Luke. “Then two shall be upon one bed; one is taken and the other is left.” Two people are in the same bed. Who might these two people be, for them to share the same bed? First, they may be husband and wife. Second, they may be a mother and daughter. Third, they may be a father and son. There is no other proper circumstance in which two people would share the same bed. Since the subject has come up, I would add this: do not sleep in the same bed with your children.
I say this as a parenthesis: do not sleep in the same bed with your children. Spouses should sleep together as spouses. Do not become estranged from one another. This estrangement causes many problems. Unfortunately, even when the children are still very young, the father takes his little boy and sleeps with him, while the mother takes a little girl and sleeps with her. Gradually, the two spouses become psychologically and emotionally estranged from one another. This is not good! It is not good! Pay attention to this. It is another matter if there is to be continence and a period of abstinence, but that is for other reasons. Taking the children into your bed is not one of them. And afterward, your children...
You teach them to sleep in your bed. From the time they are babies in the cradle, teach them to sleep by themselves. Their cradle may be in your room while they are infants, of course. But as soon as they begin to grow a little, they should sleep separately. “But the child is afraid.” Ah, my dear ones, I remember when I was made to sleep alone at a very young age. I was very young. Child that I was—I do not hide it—I was afraid. There was a cupboard in the room where they put me to sleep, and it had woodworm, that little worm that eats wood. It would go, “scrape, scrape, scrape,” making a noise. When everything was completely still, you could hear it. How could I possibly close my eyes?
You might say that I would simply stay huddled beneath the covers, but how could I sleep? Then I would hear, “crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.” I could not bear it; I was afraid. What was it? So I began shouting. My mother came and calmed me down. “Oh, it is nothing,” she told me. “They are just some little fish inside the wood.” You know, a woodworm, or even a moth larva, has an elongated shape, so she called it a little fish. It never occurred to me to wonder what kind of fish could be living inside wood. I solved that mystery several years later. My point is that there are certain things to which we must pay attention. A child should soon leave the parents’ room. Pay attention; you understand why I am saying this. Do not say, “The child is asleep!”
Do not say, “The child does not understand.” Do not say any such thing. Problems are created in children, and afterward they may have problems respecting their parents’ authority. A terrible wound can be left within them if they become aware of something concerning their parents. Great care is needed here. So, who might share one bed? I return to the subject now and close my parenthesis. It may be a husband and wife, a mother and daughter, or a father and son. In other words, they are joined by the closest and most immediate relationship. This is the point on which I wish to dwell.
Uh...
Matthew—Saint Cyril omits this for the sake of brevity—says the following:
Two women are at the same mill. Picture a hand mill, like those that may still survive in some of our villages, made of two stones. The stones are, of course, quite heavy. There is a handle somewhere on the mill. The wheat is poured through a hole in the upper stone, and then the stone is turned. The ground wheat comes out from between the edges of the two stones. Is that not how such a mill works? But to turn this mill rhythmically and make it productive, two people are needed. So these two women take hold of the handle. This was usually women’s work among the village farmers, at least in earlier times.
They take the handle and rhythmically turn the upper stone. This means that the two women who are grinding are very close to one another. If you understand, the Lord’s examples are intended to show us two people in very close proximity. And the third example: two people, He says, are plowing in a field.
They are working at the same plow, we might say, positioned behind the animals. They yoke two oxen, or even more, and behind them are the man and woman working the field. If there are many animals, there may be two farm laborers so that they can guide them through the field. Thus, He says, two farm laborers are in the field. One is taken and the other is left. In the bed...
One is taken and the other is left. At the mill, where the women are grinding, one is taken and the other is left. Where is the person who is taken actually taken? The word means that someone receives him and carries him away, while the other remains alone. It means that one is devout and is saved, while the other is not devout and is not saved. One remains behind, not gathered by the Holy Angels. Do you understand? The other is taken by the Holy Angels, according to the words “they will gather together,” which the Lord uses here. At this point, my dear ones, I would like us to pay close attention, because I often see women who inwardly agonize over the salvation of their husbands. They do very well; that is how it should be.
Husbands, too, can feel deeply troubled because their wives are spiritually lax, have no spiritual life, and often live in unbelief. This means that, even though they are husband and wife and share such an intimate bond, one may be saved and the other may not. God said, “What God has joined together, let no man separate,” and the Apostle Paul says, “The two shall become one flesh.” Yes, they will be one flesh in order to fulfill the purpose of marriage. But when it comes to salvation, their paths may differ, because...
In marriage, take note, there is only one matter that the spouses necessarily share. What is it? Their conjugal relations. The Word of God states this clearly. The Apostle Paul says again, in the seventh chapter of First Corinthians, that the wife cannot simply refuse, because her husband has authority over her body. Likewise, the husband cannot simply refuse, because, in a certain sense, his wife has authority over his body. There must be mutual agreement. Without such agreement, there can be no period of continence. This means that, when you were preparing to marry...
you had to take this matter into account as something affecting your salvation. That is why both spouses should be devout people who are able to come to an understanding. Yet this is the only matter necessarily held in common. Even if continence cannot be practiced because one spouse does not wish to abstain, you are still keeping the commandment given by the Spirit of God, which says that you do not have authority over your own body. Do not be afraid; God will vindicate you. Everything else, however, remains your own personal responsibility. Take fasting: yes, there is one table—or rather, we share a common table, certainly.
But we may eat different food. You know that we should not have separate tables; only people who are quarreling eat at separate tables. There should be a common table and a common bed. But the food itself need not be the same. Does your husband want to eat meat during Lent, or on a Wednesday or Friday? Ask him to be careful. If he refuses, that is his responsibility. Beside his food, you can put a small pot and quickly prepare something simple for yourself, with oil or without oil. Do not tell me, “But then I shall have to put two pots on the stove.” Yes, you will put two pots on the stove. How difficult is it to prepare a little pot with two potatoes, some pasta, or a vegetable? This is an important matter. The extra expense is hardly worth mentioning.
It is important, because some people say, “I want to fast, but my husband does not fast, so I follow his example.” No. In conjugal relations there is mutual dependence and obligation. In fasting there is not. You will not quarrel with him. If he wants to eat, then, as I have said, let him eat. But you will not eat; you will fast. “But my husband shouts at me and demands that I eat.” In this matter, let him shout as much as he likes. In conjugal relations, however, you must not protest, because you do not have the right simply to refuse him. Here, though, you do have the right to say no. Do you understand, then, that one spouse may live devoutly while the other does not? That is how it is. And so one is taken and the other is left.
One is saved and the other is not, even though they are so close. This means that, intimate as their bond may be, each can still attend to his or her own salvation. Their ways of life may differ. Would you ever have believed that Pilate’s wife could be saved and even commemorated as a Saint? Could you ever have imagined it? Pilate’s wife, no less! Yes, she was the one who sent word to her husband through a servant: “Have nothing to do with that righteous man.” Be careful not to harm Him, she said, “for I have suffered many things in a dream,” and so forth. Do not lay your hands on this man; He is righteous.
Pilate was weak in character and irresolute, a man driven this way and that by the political forces of his time. Yes, by the political forces of his time. He wanted to remain on good terms with the Jews, because he had committed corrupt deeds and feared that they would report him to Rome. In the end, he did not escape their accusations. And, as you know, Pilate is said to have taken his own life. Yet his wife became a Saint—and, what is more, she was a Roman. She was not Jewish; she did not belong to the people of God. How, then, was she saved? This is very important. You see, one is saved and the other is lost. If such a difference can exist between two people who are so close...
then salvation is all the more possible when a devout person lives in a city that is not devout. Let no one tell me, “You know, my city or my age is sinful.” No. If one person can be saved even when two people share such an intimate relationship, then you can certainly be saved while living in a city. No one binds you. You have your own bed, so to speak, and your own cooking pot. No one binds you. What does it matter what the world outside is doing? Let it do as it pleases. Others do not attend church? You can attend church. They do not pray? You can pray. They do not go to Confession? You can go to Confession. Have vile, filthy, and terrible spectacles appeared? Close your eyes—though of course you should not put on blinders while walking down the street.
Do not look at anything evil. Are others watching whatever they please on television? Stay away from the television. It is in your hands. You can be saved in any age. Could there ever be a more apostate and sinful age than the age of the Antichrist? Yet even then there will be people who are saved. We can therefore live faithfully in any age. Lot is an example. I mentioned him last time, but let me read the passage again: “He did not overlook the one man Lot; how, then, will He overlook the many righteous?” The Holy Triune God comes down—or, more precisely, the two figures who are types, prefigurations of God the Word (Logos) and the Holy Spirit, come down into the world, for Sodom and Gomorrah lie geographically below.
This is what I said: they came to seek out and save Lot. What did Sodom represent—Sodom, infamous throughout history? What was it? If it had not been what it was, why would God have destroyed it so utterly that not one living soul was left there? Sodom is a historical type of Hell—a real event that foreshadows Hell. Sodom was destroyed by fire and brimstone, and Hell is likewise depicted through fire and brimstone. That is why I called it a historical type. Who, then, was saved from that place? Lot. How did he avoid becoming corrupt while living in that filthy city?
And yet we say, my dear friends, that we cannot be saved in our own age? Let us stop repeating that phrase, “In the twentieth century!” Yes, in the twentieth century. What is the twentieth century? Some people even say, “We are approaching the year 2000, and are we still going to hold these outdated ideas about Christ and about matters of the flesh?” But what is the year 2000? Is it some extraordinary and astonishing historical milestone? Why use the year 2000 as an argument? What have we achieved—advanced technology? That is a foolish argument. What does technology have to do with it? I too can put a computer in my home. Does that mean I must cease to live devoutly? My dear friends, we can be devout in every age. Let us understand this.
The Gospel is for every age. “Even if you are forced to serve at a mill, even if you wear fetters, even if you labor beside the mill, the One who brought prisoners out with strength will not overlook you. The One who brought Joseph out of slavery and prison into a kingdom will also redeem you from tribulations and bring you into the Kingdom of Heaven. Only take courage, only labor, only struggle eagerly, for nothing is lost.” Whether you are a slave in a mill or the master of the mill, God will not overlook you. He is the One who “brought prisoners out with strength,” as it says in the Psalms.
The “prisoners” are those whom He brings out of captivity. Saint Cyril also gives the beautiful example of Joseph: will the One who brought Joseph out of prison forget you? God will not forget you. Only one thing is needed: “Take courage.” Only one thing: “Labor.” At what must you labor? At keeping the commandments. Only one thing: “Struggle eagerly”—not lazily, but willingly and eagerly. “For nothing is lost.” Nothing is lost. He then continues with this beautiful description: “Every prayer and every psalm you chant is recorded.”
Every prayer you have offered and every psalm you chant is written down. It is recorded in your account, in your book, in your own portion of God’s book—that is, in the book of God’s remembrance. You know that Daniel’s words, “and books shall be opened,” present us with an image. There will not literally be books, my dear friends. This image is taken from the courts. A judge has the case file before him and decides according to the testimony and every other detail of the case. The file contains everything relevant to the trial. The image, then, is drawn from human courts. It is like saying that your case file is being completed.
“It is recorded”: every prayer and every psalm you chant is written down. “Every act of almsgiving is recorded.” Whatever alms you have given are written down. “Every fast is recorded.” Every fast you have kept is also written down, credited to your account. “Every marriage faithfully preserved is recorded.” What is a marriage faithfully preserved? The word is “faithfully.” A marriage is faithfully preserved when no adultery has occurred. My dear friends, men and women, I beg you, I implore you—there is a reason I am saying this.
Adultery has multiplied in our time. Guard your marriage; please, guard it. And the fact that no adultery has occurred is also written in our record, credited to our account. “Every act of continence performed for God’s sake is recorded.” What does this mean? It means that continence practiced for God’s sake is also recorded; it too is written down. Continence can be understood in both a broad and a narrow sense. In the narrow sense, it is the continence practiced by spouses, as during Lent, or during a period...
outside Lent, on fasting or non-fasting days, as we discussed during the question period. It may be a Wednesday, a Friday, a Sunday, a feast day, and so forth, as we said. Spouses may also practice continence beyond what the Church prescribes. That is their choice. They may say, “We would like to practice continence even beyond Lent.” Do not be alarmed. There are many married couples who practice continence both before and after Lent—throughout the year. No one tells them to do so, and the Church does not impose it upon them; they themselves desire it. Do not be alarmed: the Church does not impose it. The Word of God establishes...
a minimum standard. What does the Apostle Paul say? You are to abstain, fast, and pray, “and then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” Do not expose yourselves to temptation through a lack of self-control. That is what the Word of God says. But this is the minimum. In other words, when you fast, you will also practice continence. Afterward, however, the Church does not require you to abstain. Do you wish to do so? It will be to your honor and praise, and it will be a virtue. This too, Saint Cyril says, is recorded—something offered beyond the minimum. Now take note of something else as well.
Continence does not concern only conjugal relations; in its broader sense, it also concerns food. Someone may decide to fast a little more than the Church prescribes. That is your choice. The Church does not require it; you choose to do it. Just do not tell others that they must do it too. Do not do that; it is wrong. What I desire for you and for myself is that we observe what the Church teaches. If someone desires to do something more, that is a personal matter. For there is a strange tendency among us: we want to impose upon others whatever we ourselves are doing. We regard them as inferior and ourselves as superior, and then we fall into another sin.
That sin is pride, a deadly sin. More than once I have heard this appalling claim, when someone imposes an additional observance and says, for example, “You must fast on that day too.” “But the Church does not say so.” “Then you will not be saved.” Wait a moment: you are creating a crisis of conscience in other people. Is that honorable? Does God desire it? You are creating a kind of super-morality. Is that right? If you personally desire to do it, then let it remain between you and God. Let God see you, and do it yourself. But do not impose it upon someone else. If that person later chooses to do it, let him. But do not tell him that it is a matter of salvation, or that he will not be saved because he does not fast beyond what the Church prescribes. That is not right. I believe we understand this very well.
Self-restraint can mean eating less—saying, “I will not have fruit at the table today; I will not eat dessert,” or, “I will eat a smaller portion.” This, then, is self-restraint. What does self-restraint mean? It means holding myself back. I restrain myself from doing something I would like to do. I will not read the newspaper today. Do you hear? I will not go visiting. Today I will not leave my house. This is self-restraint in the broad sense. It is a virtue, because in this way we train ourselves and strengthen our will. And if, as educators, you want to form children...
They ought to have—and must have—a strong will, a firm power of choice. Teach your children this kind of self-restraint in the broad sense. Say to your child, “Look, my little John, do not eat your fruit now; eat it in an hour.” And dessert—what child does not love sweets? Or rather, children today apparently do not love sweets. In my day I used to steal sweets; today they do not, unfortunately. In any case, let us suppose the child loves sweets, or something else that he truly enjoys. Tell him, “Look, do not eat it now; eat it in an hour.” If the child understands, he will very quickly acquire a strong will. He will say no. He will learn to say that wonderful word, no.
When he needs to say no, he will say no, and he will not fall. He will not fall. But what does the phrase “self-restraint practiced for God’s sake” mean? You see, I am lingering over the text a little longer. That does not matter; we are also explaining a few related points. It means that this self-restraint is not undertaken so that I may have a slender waist because fashion demands that I be thin, nor merely for reasons of health—because it is good not to eat too much, lest I damage my stomach or develop heart disease as I grow older, or suffer this or that. Such self-restraint undertaken for fashion, health, or one’s figure...
Has no value before God—none at all. That is why Saint Cyril very rightly says, “practiced for God’s sake.” When you say, “I will not eat this,” either because God commands it, as in the case of fasting, or in a broader case—such as not going somewhere, restraining your tongue and remaining silent because God commands it—or because you ought to build up a strong will, which God also desires, only then is it recorded as a virtue. Whatever is done because God wills it, and for God’s sake, has value. If it is not done for God’s sake...
It has no value at all. Many people, my dear friends, fast in order to have a slender waist or improve their health. These things have only a temporary character and temporary value—nothing more. They have no eternal value. “Yet in the record, the foremost crowns belong to virginity and chastity, and you shall shine like an angel.” Where could we say this today? Once there were golden ages when such things could be said. But where could we say them today? Everything—your fasting, your psalmody, your self-restraint, and your almsgiving—will receive its value and reward. But the highest of all...
What is it that holds first place among the crowns? In what is recorded, virginity and chastity hold that place. What is chastity? Chastity means that, if I have fallen into sexual sin, I have repented and no longer return to it. This is called purity; it is called chastity. We are speaking here of life outside marriage, as you understand. What is virginity? It means never having fallen into that sin. Whether it is chastity or virginity, then, if it is preserved as it should be, because God commands it and God wills it, rather than merely...
As some philosophical whim, personal eccentricity, or an attitude of, “That is simply how I like it,” then it is something else entirely. When I do it for God, because God commands it, it becomes my offering and dedication to God. These two virtues, he says, hold first place among the crowns, “and you shall shine like an angel.” Do you see? “But just as you gladly heard the good things, now hear without shrinking the opposite things as well. Every act of greed of yours is recorded.” You have heard the good things.
Now pay attention to their opposites. Every act of greed is likewise recorded. “Every act of fornication is recorded.” Every sexual sin you committed is recorded. “Every act of oath-breaking and blasphemy, sorcery, theft, and murder is recorded.” Oath-breaking means violating an oath. You know that oath-taking itself is not permitted. Unfortunately, however—not to take the matter any further—we also have false oaths, which are punishable even by civil law. How much more will God punish them! A false oath is swearing to something untrue. We also have the violation of an oath, which means breaking a promise made under oath—a...
Sworn promise. If I break a promise I made under oath, then I am an oath-breaker. If I am a soldier who took an oath when I entered the army and then slipped away—I once slipped away while I was serving, and with good reason, because they would not give me leave; my mother was going into surgery the next day and could have died, which in fact happened only a short time later, so I chose to slip away—well, what soldier has never slipped away once? I do not think there is one. What public servant has never breached his duty? There is no one. A public servant takes an oath upon entering service, and a soldier also takes an oath. If, therefore, we commit a breach...
Of duty, what are we? We are oath-breakers. Yet oaths have been imposed in these situations. Why, my dear friends, do you impose an oath in the army? Why do you impose oaths upon public servants or military officers? Why? Is it so that you may make them oath-breakers and turn all Greeks into oath-breakers? Is that right? This is the violation of an oath, and it too is recorded. So is every blasphemy and every act of sorcery or magic—from having the evil eye removed, all the way to not merely going to have spells broken but going to cast spells against another person—as well as theft and murder, from abortion...
To murder. All of them, he says, are recorded, and recorded without exception. “All these things are recorded if you do them after being baptized, for the earlier things are blotted out.” Whatever you have done up to this point—remember that these catechetical lectures are addressed to those preparing for illumination, the candidates for Baptism—your Baptism will blot out. Whatever you do after your Baptism is recorded. But I would add something here, though Saint Cyril does not write it: the love of God sees how weak the human person is...
How feeble his will is, how easily he slips into sin, and how, from his youth, as the Book of Genesis says, his understanding is inclined toward evil. God therefore established another Mystery alongside the Mystery of Baptism, through which both ancestral sin and actual, personal sins are blotted out. Beside it He placed something else: the Mystery of Holy Confession. And so, have you fallen? Run quickly to confession. Have you fallen again? Run back again. And I would add something more: the Mystery of Holy Confession is not only the Mystery in which our sins are forgiven.
It is also the Mystery that protects us from committing sins. People often say—and this is a very common testimony—“You know, I managed to follow what you told me in confession for one month. Then I forgot it, and afterward I fell back into the same sins.” Very well. If you therefore go to confession every twenty-nine days, you will not fall on the thirtieth day, because you will renew the strength you receive from the Mystery. It is very simple. Frequent confession is valuable not only because our unconfessed sins are forgiven, but also because it restrains us from committing sin. When I know that... after all, there is a certain sense of shame. There are people who will tell you...
“Do you know how difficult it is for me to tell you what I am telling you now? Do you know how much pressure any person feels when saying something he is ashamed to say?” Yet this has value; it teaches and trains us. Here is its value. When I have forced myself, despite my shame over what I did, to come and confess it, do I want to do it again? I am ashamed. How will I tell my spiritual father? Even though he is a fellow human being, the thought, “I am ashamed; how will I tell my spiritual father?” prevents me from repeating the sin. Thus, when I go frequently to confession, I receive this benefit together with all the other benefits provided by the Mystery of Holy Confession. I am then restrained from repeating the sin. If someone has...
Become addicted to sin—if he once began and a sin has become habitual—there is no other way than to go frequently to confession. Would you like another example? You know how an avalanche forms, do you not? A fir cone falls from a tree—I do not know how it became detached—or perhaps a little stone or something else, and it begins rolling across the snow and down the mountain. Snow gathers and wraps itself around the cone or the stone. But the more snow it gathers as it rolls, the heavier it becomes.
More and more snow collects around it. It can grow into an avalanche as large as this church and come down from a mountaintop, my dear friends, onto a village at the foot of the mountain and completely bury it. You have heard about the danger of avalanches; you know it well. What does this mean? If you stop that little stone and somehow catch it, will it become an avalanche? No. And so, today you sinned; you committed a sin. Allow me to speak openly to you. I will repeat what John Chrysostom and Basil the Great used to say: “I do not wish to adorn myself with lofty words, but to make those who hear me noble.” And again: “I hesitate to speak, yet I do not wish to remain silent.”
I do not seek, he says, to speak in grand and beautiful words, but to make the people who hear me noble, splendid, and radiant. Let us say that a child falls into masturbation. This is a downward slope—a downward slope. It happened once; then it will happen twice, ten times, and many times. Run quickly to confession, on that very day if possible. Is that difficult? Call your spiritual father and say, “Father, I fell into masturbation today.” The spiritual father will say, “Very well. I will see you and say a prayer for you,” and so forth. Do you know what happens? It does not happen a second time. We caught the little stone, and it did not become an avalanche. This is the value of confession.
It is not only the forgiveness of sins, but also the restraint that keeps us from sinning. You see, then, how much care is shown for us. We now proceed, in the few minutes remaining, to section twenty-four. “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, see, O man, before how many you enter into judgment.” What does Scripture say, and where? Matthew 25:31. “When the Son of Man comes...”
In all His glory, and all the angels of heaven are with Him. This is that most solemn image of the Judge recorded for us by the Holy Evangelist Matthew. Saint Cyril pauses here and says: “Do you see? He comes in all His glory. Do you see? All the angels—every one of them. Look, O man; pay attention and consider before how many you enter into judgment. You enter the tribunal, the court, to be judged. And how many are present? All the angels of heaven are there. How many are they? What is their number?”
I have told you this before. How many angels are there? Write down a one, and then begin adding zeros. Add one zero: ten. Add two: one hundred. Add three: one thousand. Add four: ten thousand. Add six: one million. Add seven, add ten—keep adding. Ten to the hundredth power is a one followed by one hundred zeros. Can I go to ten to the two-hundredth power? Yes. To the thousandth power? Yes. How many angels are there? Countless—truly countless. Do you see, then, before how many angels you come to be judged? Is that all? The whole human race will also be present. At that time there will be present...
The whole human race will be present—all the people who have ever lived. There is a little more here... I will pass over it quickly, because he has much to say about this. I will only explain it very briefly. “Consider, then, how numerous the Roman race is.” That is, how many Romans are there? “Consider how numerous the barbarian peoples now living are.” How many people belong to the other nations, the barbarian peoples? How many are living now? And how many died a hundred years ago? “Consider how many have died during the past hundred years. Consider how many have been buried over the course of a thousand years.”
How many people have been buried and have died over all those years? “Consider all those from Adam until today.” How many people have lived from Adam to the present day? The multitude is very great, and yet it is small. Yes, they are many, but even this number is small. Why? “For the angels are more numerous. They are the ninety-nine sheep, while humanity is the one sheep.” He applies here the Lord’s parable of the hundred sheep, in which the Lord leaves the ninety-nine and goes to find the one. He applies it to humanity and the angels: He left the ninety-nine and came to find the one. His point, therefore, is that the number of angels is far greater than the number of human beings.
“The number of inhabitants must be reckoned according to the vastness of all the places they inhabit.” Pay attention to this. Their number, he says, should be calculated according to the size of the places. Suppose everyone were to rise upon our earth and stand side by side—not upon the oceans, but upon the dry land, each person beside the next. Take Europe, for example. Would it not be filled with people standing side by side, since everyone will rise? Yet our earth is small. How vast are the realms inhabited by the angels? They are immensely vast: the heavens. So the extent of the realms corresponds to the size of their population.
This is a rather unusual idea. A little later I will explain why. “The inhabited earth is the center...” Forgive me, forgive me. “The inhabited earth is the center, like a single point in the midst of one heaven; and the heaven surrounding it contains a multitude proportionate to its breadth, while the heavens of heavens contain a corresponding number.” What I was just telling you about these questions can be seen here: this is the ancient understanding of the universe and the earth. It is the Ptolemaic system of astronomy, which regards the earth as the center. He says “the inhabited earth” because the word “earth” can sometimes mean the land of Judah or some other land. “The inhabited earth” means the whole earth, the earth in its entirety.
They regarded it as flat. You know this ancient theory: the earth was flat, the sky rested upon it, and so forth. These were the ideas of that age. This, then, is the geocentric system. He says that one heaven belongs to this earth, but beyond it are the heavens of heavens. How many angels, then, must there be? His purpose is to show the difference between the number of angels and the number of human beings. Now pay attention to one more thing.
It is written: “A thousand thousands ministered to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him,” as Daniel 7:10 says concerning the holy angels. “This does not mean that their multitude is only so great, but that the prophet was unable to name a number greater than this.” It is not that there are precisely that many; rather, the prophet had no greater number or image by which to express the multitude of the angels. Now, because he speaks about the vastness of the places, pay attention to something I want to tell you. Every so often, some naive person may say, in an attempt to reject the Resurrection, “Very well, but where will we all fit if we rise?”
That objection might be raised against the millennialists, who believe that after we rise we shall live upon the earth. But it seems to me that when we rise—even according to the millennialists—we shall not remain on earth. Does the Lord not say that He will take us up from the earth to meet Him in the air? The Lord does not say this directly. The Apostle Paul says it in his Epistle to the Thessalonians, through a revelation from the Lord, “by the word of the Lord”—that is, the Apostle Paul preserves what the Lord said. The millennialists say that we shall remain here. But if everyone from Adam and Eve until the present day must rise, then what will happen, my beloved? There would not be enough room. In what realm, then, shall we find ourselves? But since the little light has come on, we shall continue, God willing,
next Monday.

Αυτό είχα πει, αυτό: να αναζητήσουν και να σώσουν τον Λωτ. Τι εσήμαινε Σόδομα, περιώνυμα εις την ιστορία, τι ήσαν; Κι αν δεν ήσαν αυτό που ήσαν, γιατί τα κατέστρεψε τα Σόδομα ο Θεός, ώστε να μη σωθεί ρουθούνι; Τύπος, τύπος ιστορικός της κολάσεως, τύπος ιστορικός της κολάσεως είναι τα Σόδομα. Με πυρ και θείο κατεστράφησαν τα Σόδομα, με πυρ και θείον εικονίζεται και η κόλαση. Γι' αυτό σας είπα, ιστορικός τύπος. Συνεπώς, ποιος σώθηκε από εκεί; Ο Λωτ. Πώς εκείνος δεν χάλασε μέσα σε εκείνη τη βρώμικη πόλη;
Όλη του τη δόξα και μαζί του θα είναι όλοι οι άγγελοι του ουρανού. Είναι εκείνη η σπουδαιοτάτη εικόνα του Κριτού που μας καταγράφει ο Ιερός Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος. Εδώ σταματάει και λέγει: «Είδες; Με όλη του τη δόξα. Είδες; Όλοι οι άγγελοι, και πάντες οι άγγελοι. Βλέπε, άνθρωπε, πρόσεξε, κοίταξε, επί πόσων εις κριτήριον εισέρχει. Μπαίνεις μέσα στο κριτήριον, μέσα στο δικαστήριον, να κριθείς. Και πόσοι είναι παρόντες; Όλοι οι άγγελοι του ουρανού είναι. Πόσοι είναι; Πόσος ο αριθμός;
