Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem identifies the unique sign of Christ’s Second Coming as the radiant Cross appearing in heaven before the Son of Man. Revelation’s slain yet standing Lamb unites Christ’s Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection in a single image. Those who pierced and rejected Christ will mourn when the Cross appears, fulfilling the prophetic imagery of peoples and tribes lamenting at His return.

My beloved, we are still studying the book of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, his Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture, and we have come to paragraph twenty-two, on the Second Coming. “But what is the sign of His Second Coming, so that no hostile power may dare to imitate it?” You will remember that, having finished our discussion of the Antichrist, Saint Cyril now comes to tell us about the Second Coming—about the Second Coming of Christ. And as I told you last time, this is where we must place our emphasis.

Christ is coming again. In the preceding paragraphs, we considered the subject as a whole—how Christ will come—and now Saint Cyril continues to explain how Christ will come. But what, he asks, is the sign of His Second Coming? What sign will announce it? Have you ever wondered what that sign might be? We need to know it, and it must be unique and unrepeatable, so that no one—and who else could that be but the Antichrist?—will be able to imitate it.

“Lest a hostile power dare”—and this hostile power is the Antichrist—“to imitate this sign.” This sign, therefore, must be unique, exclusive, and unrepeatable. What could it be? “And then,” he says, “the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven.” I should tell you, of course, that the Lord Himself gives this as the identifying sign that He is coming from heaven. It is found in Matthew, chapter 24, verse 30. Then, He says,

the sign will appear. Do you know what the word “sign” means? It can mean many things; it is a word rich in meaning. A sign may be a miracle, an emblem, a mark, or a boundary marker. The word has many meanings. And I should tell you that when Holy Scripture says, for example, that Christ performed signs, the word “sign” is more expressive than the word “miracle.” It is more significant, because a sign is at once a miracle and a boundary marker—a miracle that marks something out. That is what “sign” means. Take the book of Ezekiel, for example. Before that wondrous and overwhelming vision of Ezekiel, which I have often mentioned to you, the command is given to seal the people—to place a sign upon the foreheads of those who will not perish, those who grieve over all the evil being committed by the idolatrous rulers of the city of Jerusalem. A sign. But what sign? You know that the letter tau itself is also called a sign. And the letter tau,

in the Phoenician alphabet—you may open an encyclopedia and see for yourselves—has been preserved in the lowercase letter of the Latin alphabet, and thus in the alphabets of the European languages. You know what the lowercase “t” looks like. Tau. The little curve beneath it is merely a calligraphic flourish. It is the sign of the Cross—a cross, as you see. That is the letter tau, and it is called a sign.

I have said this so that you may understand how important the word “sign” is. Indeed, some interpreters say—although shortly Saint Cyril will tell us that the sign is the Precious Cross—that the sign is none other than Christ’s human nature. I mention this simply for your instruction, so that you will be aware of it. For the Incarnation of God is a sign. What human being can descend from heaven? Do not tell me that someone can descend by parachute; that is not what I mean. What human being descends from heaven? To descend, he must first have ascended. And what heaven do we mean? Neither the atmospheric sky nor the heavens of the stars, but the heaven beyond the universe, the spiritual heaven. Thus Christ’s human nature is truly a sign. For this is what the Apocalypse says,

in its first chapter: “They shall look upon Him whom they pierced.” They shall look upon the One whom they thrust through with a spear. And it was not only those people who pierced Him. One soldier struck Him with the spear—one man, the soldier who, we might say, delivered the final blow. Only one. Why, then, does Scripture say, “they pierced,” in the plural? It refers to all those who, throughout the ages, pierce the Son of Man through their sins, their atheism, and their disobedience toward the divine-human person of Christ. They pierce Him continually. That is why the plural is used.

Those who pierced Him. But you may say: if the Son of Man Himself is a sign, while Saint Cyril and most of the Fathers interpret this passage as referring to another sign, then there are two signs. The first is the One who became incarnate: the very One whom they pierced as someone contemptible, worthless, and a deceiver now becomes a sign. Yet another sign precedes this sign. Which one? The Precious Cross. I shall not dwell on that interpretation, however. I shall concentrate on the one sign—the sign which, as Saint Cyril says here,

“The true sign that belongs uniquely to Christ is the Cross.” This is the sign,

my beloved: the sign of the Cross. Saint Cyril says that it belongs uniquely to Christ—that it is His very own sign. Why? Because it is the sign through which He glorified the Father and was Himself glorified. Remember what Christ said shortly before His Passion: “Now the Son of Man is glorified.” Through what? Where? How? What is the glory of the Son of God? The Cross. Yet while the Cross is unquestionably glory for the Son, to unbelievers it is an object of mockery, something incomprehensible and utterly degrading. The Cross—glory? To whom could it be glory? Now, I ask you to consider why this is so. You will see it demonstrated in a most revealing way. Are the millenarians people of God or of the devil? Do they belong to Christ or to the Antichrist? They belong to the Antichrist. Why? Because they tremble before the sign of the Precious Cross.

If they see you make the sign of the Cross, they become enraged as though possessed. They think and say, “But the Cross was the instrument by which Christ was condemned, and you venerate it?” Yet throughout the entire New Testament, my beloved—and, in a hidden manner, throughout the entire Old Testament—the presence of the Precious Cross pervades everything. It is everywhere! What does the Apostle Paul say about the Precious Cross? “If I have anything in which to boast,” he says, “I will boast in nothing except the Cross of Christ.” This is my boast: the Cross of Christ. My boast. If the Cross...

“is foolishness to those who are perishing,” as the Apostle Paul says in the first chapter of First Corinthians, and a stumbling block to the Jews, what is that stumbling block? It is the question: how can God be crucified? Is it possible for God to be crucified? But for us, the Cross of Christ—specifically, the Cross of Christ—is the wisdom of God and the power of God, because through the wisdom of the Precious Cross He saved humanity, and through the power of the Precious Cross He saved humanity. Therefore, whoever accepts the Precious Cross belongs to Christ. The millenarians, by refusing to accept the Precious Cross,

regard this sign as abhorrent—not as a trophy of victory, but as something abhorrent. Do you now understand where these people belong? To the Antichrist. Why? Quite simply, because the Antichrist will not use the sign of the Cross. He will wage war against Christ and therefore against His Cross as well. How, then, could the Antichrist possibly use the sign of the Cross? If he used it, he would, in effect, be serving what we might call the interests of Christ. But he will not use this sign. Perhaps you can now understand why the millenarians are not merely called heretics, but antichrists.

Pay attention to that description: the millenarians are antichrists for this very reason, my beloved. Thus this sign is Christ’s unique possession, His unique and true possession. It is His own, and there is no other: the Precious Cross. “For the radiant Cross will go before the King, revealing the One who was formerly crucified.”

“So that when the Jews who formerly pierced Him and plotted against Him behold it, they may mourn, tribe by tribe,” and so forth.

Saint Cyril says that the Cross will be radiant with light. In other words, the Precious Cross will appear in heaven. Yes. Notice that the Precious Cross goes before—that is, precedes—the Second Coming of Christ. Will it be a piece of wood? Will it be that ancient wood, the wood upon which Christ was crucified? It is not the material that matters, but the symbol. We know this: when I take two pieces of wood and form them into a cross, I venerate it. If I take those pieces apart, I venerate nothing. Therefore, I do not venerate the material,

whether that material is gold, silver, wood, stone, or anything else. I venerate the sign of the Precious Cross, not the material, not the wood. Yet the sign is, of course, expressed through some material, because Christ Himself was crucified upon material wood, since He truly bore a material body. This is why we wear a cross around our neck. My beloved, do not wear little hearts there, or pendants—whatever such things are called—or horseshoes, blue eyes, and all the rest. Wear the Precious Cross around your neck. Every one of you should wear the Precious Cross.

That is how it should be. If you have the means to make it of gold, then make it of gold. You may prefer silver or wood; you may hang it around your neck on a piece of string rather than a gold chain. What does the cost matter? Only one thing matters: that it be the Precious Cross. We should all have the Precious Cross; we should all wear the Precious Cross around our necks. Now, what will this Precious Cross in heaven be like? Saint Cyril says that it will be radiant with light. It will not be the ancient material itself, but the sign, the symbol, manifested in a manner known to God. You know that once, in the days of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, something similar occurred. Indeed, a letter concerning the event has been preserved. Regrettably,

there is something further from Saint Cyril concerning the Precious Cross: it appeared in the sky over Jerusalem, and he even describes the points on the horizon between which it extended. For many hours, the Precious Cross remained stretched across the sky, shining with light. This was a sign. We may imagine that the future sign will be something like this, though God alone knows how it will appear. But one thing is certain: there will be no eye that does not behold the Holy Cross—not only among those who are alive, but also among those who have been raised from the dead.

The resurrection of the dead will take place, and then everyone will behold the Precious Cross in heaven, with Christ coming behind it. That is why Saint Cyril says here that it “goes before the King”—that is, it precedes the King, meaning Christ the King—“revealing the One who was formerly crucified.” Whom does the sign of the Cross reveal? The One who was crucified upon the Cross. What, then, does the sign of the Cross provide? It identifies the Crucified One. Would you like to see exactly how this identity is expressed in the Apocalypse? First of all, it is expressed through the image of the Lamb. As you know, the Lamb

is above all the creature offered in sacrifice. So when Jesus Christ appears as the Lamb, we have what is called the theology of the Lamb: although He is called “the Son of Man” in the Gospels, in the Apocalypse He is called “the Lamb.” It is the same Person. The image of the Lamb expresses what the Lamb suffered. And what does it tell us? That He is offered as a sacrifice. But can God be offered as a sacrifice? Surely the divine nature cannot! Or is it the human nature that is offered? Thus, the image of the Lamb expresses both the Incarnation of the Son of God and His sacrifice. And there is also that paradoxical image.

A strange image: the Lamb who was slain and yet stands. The Lamb that was slain bears the wound of the slaughter, and at the same time stands on all four feet. How can it stand on all four feet when it has been slain? What does this image, which at first seems contradictory, reveal? It shows that the Lamb—and how do we know that Christ is the Lamb? The Evangelist records the words of John the Baptist: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” This Lamb, then—the Son of God who became incarnate—was slain. Where? How? Upon the Cross. But what happened afterward? He rose from the dead. Thus, in this one image we have two events.

One image, two events: the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. He is crucified and rises again—the Lamb slain yet standing. “Standing” means that which stands. In the phrase “the Lamb standing,” the word “standing,” with a lowercase sigma, is neuter. It is the Lamb who stands—that is, the One who has risen. So what does the sign of the Cross always signify? As a rule, it signifies the One who was crucified. That is why the demons tremble before the Precious Cross. For upon the Cross, Christ made a public spectacle—the Greek word begins with epsilon-iota—of the devil, exposing him to shame through his defeat

before the eyes of the entire heavenly host of the Holy Angels. But take heed!

The Precious Cross can never be used by the Antichrist or by the powers of darkness—that is, by the devil. It is simply impossible. I know what you will say to me now: “We went to that wretched man—and what else could he be but wretched?—Christos Gazoros, Christos Barbas; Barbas is his surname. We went there and saw that he had icons. He also had the Precious Cross. So how can this man use the Precious Cross there and invoke demons? How is that possible?” Yet we know the truth, and we assure you—we assure you once again—

We shall never tire of saying it again and again: this man is a medium, a sorcerer, and a dangerous man. He works through dark powers; he works with the devil, and there is not the slightest trace of God’s divine uncreated energies in him. “But how can that be?” you may ask. “Do not the vile demons recoil at the presence of the Precious Cross?” Indeed they do. But I will answer you: Did Christ allow the devil to crucify Him? Yes. Please pay close attention to the explanation. Did Christ allow the devil to crucify Him? Yes—for even before that, He allowed the devil to lift Him into the air. Who lifted Him? The devil. Do you understand? The devil lifted God into the air.

Understood. And where did he set Him? On the pinnacle of Solomon’s Temple. And after that, where did he take Him? To a high mountain. He carried Him through the air. Nothing happened to Christ’s human body; it did not dissolve. Do not forget that this kind of transport can be brought about both by God and by the devil. An example from God is the transport of Philip: while Philip the deacon was speaking with the Ethiopian, as we read in the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit caught him up and carried him away. Or consider that Israelite who was transported from Jerusalem to Babylon, to the lions’ den where Daniel was, so that he could give him the food he had been taking out to the workers in the fields. And, Lord, Babylon is nowhere near Jerusalem! Yet the Spirit of God carried him five hundred kilometres away.

The Angel, it says, snatched him up with a rushing sound—rho, iota—and carried him away. He snatched him from here before he could even gather his bearings. Just imagine what happened to that man: “My God, what is happening to me?” Suddenly he found himself above the lions’ den. Can the devil snatch someone up? Yes, indeed; he snatched up the Lord. And where did he take Him? To the pinnacle of Solomon’s Temple. From where? From the wilderness. So what are we to say about this? Christ permitted it. He allowed it; He let it happen. And now He allows the devil to crucify Him. What do I mean? He allows the devil’s instruments—the rulers—to crucify Him. How, then, is Christ to be regarded here, by way of permission? As—pay close attention...

The word I am about to use is “captive.” And another word: “confined.”

So, practitioners of magic use the Precious Cross, but as a captive or enclosed Cross. What, then, is this enclosed Cross, this captive Cross? Freemasonry uses it, because there is magic within Freemasonry—do not be surprised. Of course, if you say this to a Freemason, he will tell you, “The man telling you such tales must be mad.” He is not mad at all; he knows what he is talking about. How, then, is the Precious Cross enclosed and rendered powerless? They make a shape: a triangle pointing downward.

The Masonic triangle points downward, and they place the Cross inside it. Does that triangle with the Cross in the middle remind you of anything? It is the emblem of the YMCA and the YWCA. It is their emblem: the Young Women’s Christian Association and, as the other is called in Thessaloniki, the Young Men’s Christian Association. These are Masonic creations, with our Christianity placed inside them. Why not? Why not?

He is the great deceiver, because the one who first taught this is the devil—the great deceiver who seeks to usurp Christ’s place. And so, when they give you a badge with the Precious Cross enclosed within a triangle... The triangle is well known as a symbol of the Freemasons. Do they not place three little dots everywhere in the shape of a triangle? Whenever they write the initials M.A.T.S., every document bears the words, “To the glory of the Great Architect of the Universe.” They take the initial of each word—for example, the epsilon from eis, “to”; then the delta from doxa, “glory”; and the tau from tou, “of the”—and separate each letter with three little dots. Each set of three dots forms a triangle.

They enclose the precious Cross within the Masonic triangle and claim that in this way they take the Cross captive. It is as though Lucifer, the devil, were saying: “Christ, I have defeated You. You defeated me on the Cross, but I have my own people.” Who are they? The Freemasons. “And now, at my command, they are coming to imprison You. What can You do? What, then, can You do? I have You trapped. What can You do?” And Christ, in order to punish these people, does within history what He first did in the prototype—the original event.

Likewise, as at the time of His Cross, He allowed the devil to crucify Him and His enemies to say, “If You are the Son of God, come down from the Cross.” Yet Christ did not come down from the Cross. And so, in every age, He allows people to render the Precious Cross powerless for themselves, so that they remain in delusion. They remain in delusion, which is the final punishment—not corrective, but condemning. That is why I fear—I truly fear—for those who go to sorcerers again and again, where images bearing the Precious Cross are used.

God may punish them as a form of discipline, so that they may correct their ways; but there is also a condemnatory punishment, and that is delusion. Would you like me to give you another example—one you probably know—to show you what has power and what does not? As you probably know, the eighteenth degree of Freemasonry is the degree of the Rosicrucians, or the Rose Cross. They use the Precious Cross, which is why they are called Rosicrucians. Pay attention: in the initiation ceremony for the eighteenth degree there is a cross—I will tell you only a little, because the subject has a broader context—and at the center of that cross there is...

a crown of thorns. At the center of the crown of thorns is a red rose—hence the name Rosicrucian, meaning rose and cross. Of course, they also include the inscription that the Jews placed over Christ at that time: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” They write it in Latin.

The four words—the initials of those four words: Jesus... I will not go into further detail now; I have explained this in catechism class. Jesus, Nazarene, N, and so on; Rex, meaning King; and of the Jews. How do the eighteenth-degree Rosicrucian Masons interpret them? Listen. They do not use the words that were written upon the Cross, but other words with the same initials. The phrase begins, “through fire.” The first word, for example, is igne, “through fire.” Ignis means fire; igne means “through fire”; then comes “nature,” natura.

Nazarene, natura—nature—renewed completely. These would be the words: “Nature is completely renewed through fire.” In other words, this cross has nothing at all to do with Christ. They give it some other meaning: that it is two pieces of wood; that it represents the four points of the compass; that it is the Equator and something else; or that it is death and life. Life is the vertical line, and death is the horizontal line cutting across life. Put whatever meaning you like into it. They attach many symbolic meanings to this shape. And in the end, they decorate cruciform columns with flames and laurels, turning it into a hieroglyphic law.

A hieroglyph expressing... You know, of course, that hieroglyphs are images, don’t you? We draw a little bird, a person, or a stool, and by it we signify a particular word. A stool, a chair—we draw the stool itself. What we draw is called a hieroglyph. So the Precious Cross—or rather, not the Precious Cross at all—is made into a hieroglyph for all these symbolic notions. Do they believe in Christ? Christ is the one Person they do not believe in. When they say that nature will be wholly renewed through fire, it means that they believe in a nature without beginning and without end, one that has no need of God in order to be renewed. It simply...

We might call it the fire of the Stoic philosophers, which renews the creation of the worlds. Does this have anything to do with Christ or with theology? Nothing at all. Since they believe such deluded things and deliberately choose them—yes, choose them!—Christ allows them to use His Precious Cross in that sense. In that sense alone. And there the Precious Cross simply does not act as the Precious Cross. Thus, although these people hold the Cross, they reach such a point that their end is perdition and delusion. This is what I meant when I spoke to you of the Cross being held captive and confined.

If you like, this idea of the Cross being “captive and enclosed” is used by sorcerers too, not only by Freemasons. A sorcerer does the following in order to work his magic. This is one of the familiar practices of sorcery. The sorceress goes out by moonlight or starlight at midnight, and what does she do? She draws a circle, perhaps one or two meters in diameter. In short, she will perform her work inside that circle. She traces the circle on the bare ground. Everything outside its circumference, the space beyond the circle, is considered profane, while the space within it—

is the sacred area in which the sorcerer will work with the evil powers, with the devil. Inside the circle, he traces the Holy Cross on the ground, and then stands upon it. In other words: “I trample upon the Cross, and as I now stand upon it, I invoke the opposing powers.” Does the Holy Cross act in such a situation? No. Why? Because Christ punishes them by allowing them to fall into delusion. They do not accept it as the Cross of Christ; instead, they trample upon Christ crucified and upon the Cross of Christ. They are truly instruments of Satan. Yes, indeed. I have now answered a possible objection or question.

Someone may ask, “Since he has icons and a cross, how can he act in this way?” Would you like another example? Take the Anastenaria fire-walking ritual. Who has not heard of it? How do the fire-walkers do what they do? What do they carry? The icon of Saint Constantine and Saint Helen. And everyone knows what Saint Constantine and Saint Helen are shown holding between them. Yet the fire-walkers accomplish those astonishing things—their feet remaining unburned—only while carrying the icon of the Holy Cross. Forgive me: the icon of Saint Constantine and Saint Helen, which also depicts the Holy Cross. How can this happen, when the custom is entirely a remnant of ancient religious rites and mysteries

and uses an icon, and is therefore demonic? How can it happen? The answer lies in everything I have told you so far.

So when the radiant, light-filled Holy Cross appears in heaven, it will reveal the One who was crucified before. It will be His identifying sign: “I am the One whom they crucified.” “So that those who pierced Him before may see Him,” and so forth—so that He may be seen by those who had pierced Him, mocked Him, ridiculed Him, crucified Him, and thrust the lance into Him. And then what? “The Jews who plotted against Him shall mourn, tribe by tribe.” I must tell you that this was also prophesied by Zechariah.

In the twelfth chapter, verses ten and twelve, it says, “tribe by tribe.” But what does this mean? It does not refer only to the Jews. Pay close attention to this phrase, “tribe by tribe.” Let me explain it briefly. It is an image, because the Jews no longer have tribes. We know that the tribes were preserved until AD 70. They were needed until then. Why? So that the prophecy might be fulfilled that Christ would come from the tribe of Judah. They passed through the whole long ordeal of the Babylonian captivity.

The tribal records were preserved precisely because the prophecy concerning Judah had to be verified. Notice also that the ten tribes had already been dispersed, because roughly a hundred years earlier they had been taken captive by the Assyrians to Nineveh. But those tribes were not the concern here. Only the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained. Holy Scripture therefore had to be fulfilled. Once it had been confirmed that Christ came from the tribe of Judah—one of the signs identifying the Messiah—the distinction between the tribes was no longer necessary. Then, in AD 70, Jerusalem was destroyed, and the Jews were scattered in every direction, like the young of a hare, throughout the world...

The tribes no longer exist. How, then, can the prophet speak of them here? I will tell you. The Apocalypse speaks of twelve tribes. Which twelve tribes are these? If you pay close attention, you will see that it does not list the ancient twelve tribes, but uses a different manner of counting. What does that mean? It means all the nations of the earth. That is all. Let me put it another way. Christ said, “You, My twelve Apostles, will sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” Which twelve tribes, when they would no longer exist? What does this mean?

It means the whole of humanity—the whole of humanity. Who, then, will mourn? Who will mourn with lamentation? Do you know what such lamentation is? It means beating one’s breast violently and tearing out one’s hair as a sign of utter, extreme mourning and overwhelming sorrow. A little later in the Acts of the Apostles, we shall see that there was great lamentation over the death of Stephen. We shall see there why this mourning took place. We even use the expression in our own language: “There was great lamentation,” meaning that sorrow was expressed to the utmost degree. Of course, there will be nothing greater left for anyone to mourn when he sees the evidence proving the great error of his life—that he chose the wrong path. So this concerns the whole of humanity: all those throughout history who crucified and pierced the Son of God. Does not the Apostle Paul say in Philippians that he mourns for those who made their belly their god and crucify the Son of God anew? He is speaking there about Christians—Christians who

rejected the element of ascesis, the ascetic discipline, and seek to turn Christianity into mere culture—that is, to remove its ascetic character. Such people crucify Christ anew. Why? Because they crucify Christ but do not crucify themselves. What does the Apostle Paul say? “As far as the world is concerned, I have been crucified. I am crucified.” The Christian who wants to turn Christianity into culture therefore rejects this ascetic element. Where are those who say what they would do and what they will do? What will you do? My dear man, once you remove the ascetic element—meaning spiritual discipline and the life of the Cross, not monasticism—

you remove the life of the Cross that belongs to every believer. It is not only for monks. Please pay attention: it would be a delusion to believe that this belongs only to monks. This ascetic element means saying “no” to very many things of this world. We must say “no.” Whoever removes this and turns Christianity into a life of comfort, into an earthly Paradise, is gravely mistaken and is described explicitly and categorically by Holy Scripture. For here the Apostle Paul says that they made their belly their god. Do you know what “belly” means? Comfort.

It means eating and drinking. Let me put it this way for the moment, since we shall refer to it again. It is drinking—not simply eating and drinking while always asking for more.

It means living without any hardship at all. Such people are those who crucify, or crucify anew, Christ throughout history. They will see the Cross, the symbol of sacrifice and ascesis, and then they will mourn. But by then their mourning will be futile and without benefit, because this lamentation and sorrow will produce nothing. It is not sorrow according to God, which leads to metanoia, to repentance. This is the sorrow of the moment when nothing more can be done. What will they say? “This is the One who was struck. This is the One whom we struck. This is the One in whose face they spat.”

They are the ones who spat in His face at that time. And do we not spit upon Him when we say, “Who is Christ, after all? Who is He?” I was reading in a Masonic book what they say about Christ and about the Theotokos. Of course, those wretched men are not saying anything new. They took these things from the notorious Porphyry and Celsus. Porphyry was an imitator of Celsus and copied him. Origen gave Celsus a crushing reply in an entire volume entitled Against Celsus. Celsus said dreadful things. All atheists and deniers of Christ draw from those sources—from Celsus and Porphyry.

They were pagans, pagan intellectuals. And what do they say? Outrageous things. If I told you that you were born of a mother who was a prostitute, would that honor you, or would it grieve you? The Theotokos, the God-bearer, is all-pure, Ever-Virgin, and higher than the heavens; when you revile her in this way, what are you doing? You are spitting upon her. “This is the One upon whom we spat. This is the One whom we struck. This is He. This is He.” What is this? It is like the familiar image of a man spitting at the sun. His spit certainly does not reach the sun; it simply falls back down upon his own face. “This is the One whom they bound. This is the One whom they had crucified and had first subjected to contempt.” This is the One whom they crucified and, before crucifying Him, humiliated and publicly mocked. They clothed Him in scarlet; Pilate did so, and Herod also clothed Him in mockery, presenting Him as a false king. “Where can we flee from the face of Your wrath?”

They will ask, “Where can I flee? Where can we escape from the face of Your wrath?” And here, please notice something. The subject of freedom is very fashionable, and whenever I find an opportunity, I am glad to say this again and again. If people were free in the way freedom is commonly understood—free to choose good or evil without anyone correcting them and without even God condemning them—then why does God condemn them here? Freedom, therefore, does not mean choosing good or evil without consequence. No, that is not freedom. Freedom means that I certainly can do evil, but I must not do it. It is not in my true interest to do it, because Hell exists.

“Surrounded by the armies of angels, they will find no way of escape.” Angels will be all around them. What a powerful image: where will you flee, my dear man? Where can you go? Myriads upon myriads of angels are watching you. Even one angel would be enough to watch you. The Lord Himself would watch you. Where will you flee? Where will you escape? And do not forget, poor and wretched man, that you have been raised from the dead and are condemned never to die again. You are condemned never to die again. “Fear to the enemies of the Cross, but gladness and joy to those who believed in it, proclaimed it, or”—forgive me—“suffered for it.” Fear and trembling will seize the enemies of the Cross when they see what they mocked and despised during their lives. But there will be great joy for the friends of the Cross, for those who believed in the Holy Cross.

The Annunciation, the Resurrection, the artos, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Holy Cross—or, better, those who believed in the One who was crucified, in Christ; those who proclaimed the One crucified upon the Cross; and those who suffered and were martyred for the One crucified upon the Cross. “Who, then, is blessed? Who will be found to be a friend of Christ?” Who will be that blessed person who, at that time, will be found a friend of Christ? Who will it be? “So glorious a King does not disdain His own servants: He who is escorted by the angels and shares the throne of the Father.” He does not disdain or reject His own people, His servants—those who believed and died for Him. He is the King of such great glory, escorted by the holy angels, enthroned upon the same throne as the Father,

both as God and as man. “So that the elect may not be mingled together with the enemies, He will send His angels with a great trumpet, and they will gather His elect from the four winds.” So that the unbelievers are not mingled with the faithful, and those destined for Hell with those who are to receive the crown of the Kingdom, He sends the holy angels. What will they do? They will gather the elect from the four directions—the four winds, the four points of the compass. Do you know what this means? It means that all of us will stand before the judgment seat of the impartial Judge.

Whether we drowned in the sea—as the Apocalypse describes so vividly—or were devoured by beasts, or died a natural death in bed and were buried; whether we were burned or a bomb fell and reduced us to nothing, the outcome is the same: everyone will be raised and everyone will be present. Whether I died in Greece, at the North Pole, on the Moon after traveling there in a spacecraft, on Mars, or beyond our planetary system—wherever I left my poor bones, wherever I died—the holy angels will gather me. We shall be raised and brought before Him.

There will be a clear separation. The Lord says this, and Saint Cyril will also tell us further on, using the image of the sheep and the goats. There is a clear distinction. That is how it will be; this is an image showing those who will be saved and those who will not. “If He did not overlook Lot, one man alone, how could He overlook the multitude of the righteous?” God Himself came down to save Lot. Remember, please, that wondrous account of Abraham’s hospitality, when the three angels were received by Abraham as a type, a foreshadowing, of God, the Holy Trinity.

They were three men. One remained with Abraham and spoke with him. The other two went down to Sodom, which lay below them geographically, so to speak. Whom do these two represent? They are a type, a foreshadowing, of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Abraham is on higher ground, as a type of Heaven. Those who descend are a type of the earth, the sinful earth. Who descends into history and enters into the life of the world? Who? The Son and the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit remains within history; He remains in the Church. They went down to save one man, Lot. Why does it say one man? Because his wife would also have been saved for her husband’s sake—and indeed could have been saved—but...

you know the story. His daughters survived, and although they were pious, they too were saved for their father’s sake. So, in essence, God came down to save one man. And Saint Cyril now says: God came down to save one man; will He not save all those who believed in Him and suffered martyrdom for Him? He did not overlook one man; will He then overlook all the righteous throughout history? “Come, you blessed of My Father,” He will say at that time, “you who then behold Me riding upon the chariot and escorted by angels.” What does this mean? Come, you blessed of My Father, and inherit the kingdom prepared for you. But, my beloved, we shall continue—first, however...

Το τρίγωνο των μασόνων με τη μύτη κάτω και μέσα βάζουν τον σταυρό. Μήπως σας θυμίζει αυτό το τρίγωνο με τον σταυρό στη μέση τίποτα; Είναι το σήμα της ΧΑΝ και της ΧΕΝ. Είναι το σήμα της ΧΑΝ και της ΧΕΝ, και μάλιστα Χριστιανική Ένωσις Νεανίδων και το άλλο, όπως είναι στη Θεσσαλονίκη, Χριστιανική Αδελφότης Νέων. Μασονικά κατασκευάσματα είναι αυτά και βάζουν τον χριστιανισμό μας. Γιατί όχι; Γιατί όχι;

Δεν υπάρχουν πια φυλές. Πώς, λοιπόν, εδώ λέγει ο προφήτης αυτό; Θα σας το πω πώς το λέει. Στην Αποκάλυψη ομιλεί περί δώδεκα φυλών. Ποιες είναι αυτές οι δώδεκα φυλές; Αν προσέξετε, αν προσέξετε, εκεί δεν αναφέρει τις παλιές δώδεκα φυλές, αλλά υπάρχει ένας διαφορετικός τρόπος αριθμήσεως. Και τι σημαίνει αυτό; Σημαίνει όλα τα έθνη της γης. Αυτό είναι όλο. Να σας το πω αλλιώτικα. Όταν ο Χριστός είπε: «Θα καθίσετε εσείς οι δώδεκα Απόστολοί μου επί δώδεκα θρόνων, κρίνοντες τις δώδεκα φυλές του Ισραήλ», ποιες δώδεκα, που δεν θα υπήρχαν πια; Τι σημαίνει αυτό;
