Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem structures his catechesis on the Jerusalem Creed, interpreting each article through passages from both the Old and New Testaments. Daniel’s imagery contains two movements: Christ first raises human nature to the Father through His Ascension, then returns upon the clouds with the holy angels at His Second Coming. The fulfillment of prophecy in Christ’s historical deeds provides firm assurance that His promised return, final judgment, and eternal Kingdom are true.

My dear friends, we are now at paragraph 21 of the fifteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. After everything Saint Cyril has told us concerning the Antichrist, he now comes to speak to us about Christ’s Second Coming. This is what we were discussing last time, and Saint Cyril continues on the subject of Christ’s Second Coming: “According to the Scripture just read, the Son of Man comes upon the clouds of heaven toward the Father.”
Indeed, if we look back at the heading of the catechetical lecture, where it states what was read, we can gain some idea of how these catechetical lectures were conducted. This, of course, is a technical detail. A passage would be read, and on the basis of that passage an explanation would be given, or the catechesis itself would be structured. It was much like what we have in a Sunday liturgical sermon: we announce a particular verse and then use that verse to structure the subject we wish to explain in the homily.
Now, a similar reading could be taken not only from one passage, but also from a second and a third, always from Holy Scripture, either the Old Testament or the New Testament. In this case, as he also writes in the introduction, he says, “the Scripture just read.” That is, the passage which, he says, we had read only a short while before, at the beginning of our talk, of our catechetical lecture. It is from Daniel. Thus, the passage could be taken either from the New Testament or from the Old Testament, while the Creed formed the central framework for these readings. In other words—
Saint Cyril takes the articles of the Creed one by one, if you have noticed this—each individual article of the Creed. And, to be more precise, it is not the Nicene Creed, because the text quoted here is the Jerusalem Creed. It is like the Nicene Creed, though in a few places the wording differs. Its doctrinal position, however, is the same as that of the Nicene Creed. It is the familiar confession, “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty.” The Creed established throughout the whole Church is called the Nicene Creed, although other creeds also exist. This does not mean that they are better or worse; they all contain the truth, but...
the Nicene Creed prevailed. On the basis of these articles of the Creed, Saint Cyril draws upon certain passages that will help him explain the particular article under consideration. These passages are taken from both the Old Testament and the New Testament—not from the New Testament alone, but from both Old and New. If you have not noticed it, the explanations given in these catechetical lectures are extraordinarily rich in quotations from Holy Scripture, drawn without distinction from both the Old and New Testaments. Unfortunately, something very alarming happens in our own time:
we do not use the Old Testament. This is alarming, and if someone preaches the Word of God yet is deficient in this respect, allow me to say that it is very, very sinful for him not to use the Old Testament. “According to the Scripture just read, the Son of Man comes upon the clouds of heaven toward the Father.” Where is this from? It is from Daniel, chapter 7, verse 13. Consequently, heaven—for could we have a cloud one centimeter above the earth? How could that be? A cloud does not descend so very low; this therefore presupposes both heaven and clouds. But what does the Old Testament say on this point? Let us make our own reading as well. I shall read to you from verse 9 through verse 13 of the seventh chapter of Daniel.
He saw the vision of the four beasts—those mythical, as we said, symbolic creatures—which succeed one another and whose place of appearance was the Mediterranean Sea, as I told you in an earlier talk. After this vision had ended, especially the vision of the final Beast, the Roman Empire, with that additional horn which is the Antichrist—about whom Saint Cyril speaks at length in other chapters; forgive me, I mean Daniel—he then continues:
“I watched until the thrones were set in place.” I watched, I watched, I kept watching. “I watched until the thrones were set in place.” Does it strike you that the text uses the definite article: “the thrones”? It does not say that thrones were set in place, but “the thrones.” This is extremely significant. “And the Ancient of Days was seated.” The expression “Ancient of Days” refers to one who is aged: the ancient one, the one who existed before all others.
In this case, it is God. The expression “Ancient of Days” is an anthropomorphic image. This is why, when we paint the Holy Trinity as three figures—the Father as an elder, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as a dove—although this iconography does not properly belong to the tradition of the Christian East, we do sometimes use this image. Yet it is not fully in keeping with the spirit of the East. More characteristic of the East is the Hospitality of Abraham, where we see the three figures. How do we depict God the Father? We depict Him as the Ancient of Days, as an elderly man with white hair, to show that He is before all others.
I said that this is an image. God does not have hair, much less white hair. As I have told you, God is eternally young and eternally everlasting; there is no time in God. These are images that enable us to understand realities that would otherwise be intangible and inaccessible to us. “And His garment...” Forgive me—since I mentioned “the thrones,” let me explain it so that I do not leave you wondering. Did Christ not say that you would sit upon twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel? And, my dear friends, did Christ not also say that the Kingdom had been prepared before the foundation of the world?
Before the foundation of the world.
When He judges, He says: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”—the Kingdom that has been prepared. Therefore, consider that every believer has a throne. Why does he have a throne? Because a throne always signifies rest: I sit down. It also signifies that I am a king. Yes, every believer is a king and a priest. This is what John the Evangelist says in the first chapter of the Apocalypse: He “made us kings and priests.” The Apostle Peter also takes up this phrase, “kings and priests,” which is also found in the Old Testament, and speaks of a “royal priesthood”—that is, a kingly priesthood, a “royal priesthood.” These correspond to the threefold office of Christ, one aspect of which is His royal office: I exercise authority. And the faithful will judge, says the Apostle Paul in his First Epistle to the Corinthians, in the fifth chapter—or perhaps the fourth; I do not remember. He says, “Do you not know that the saints will judge even angels?” Who are these angels? They are the demons whom the saints will judge, saying: We, though clothed in bodies, proved superior to you who are spirits. We shall judge the demons.
What does this mean? All these things signify the exercise of authority. But these places have already been appointed. Do you also remember what the two disciples, John and James, said? “Lord, we ask You to grant that we may sit at Your left and Your right when You come in Your glory.” Of course, the Second Coming did not even enter their minds—not at all. They meant that they would become His ministers when He reigned in Jerusalem, and so forth. The true meaning did not even enter their minds. The Lord told them, “You do not know what you are asking.” Then He told them that it was not His to grant them the seats at His left and His right—
to sit at His left and His right—“but it is for those to whom it has been given.” Notice this expression, “it has been given”: it belongs to those to whom it has been granted. To whom? We now know that those who have been given the places on the left and the right, as the Church shows in practice, are the Theotokos (God-bearer) and Saint John the Baptist. We know this. But look at the precision of prophecy, so that you may see that prophecy is true and that there is only One who guides prophecy, and that One is the Holy Spirit. The One does not make mistakes. He may place the words I am to speak in my own mouth, or in the mouth of Daniel, or of the Apostle Peter, or of any prophet whatsoever.
The One, the Holy Spirit, does not make mistakes. And here you see what Daniel says: “I watched until the thrones were set in place.” They are definite; the article identifies them: “the thrones,” those appointed for the saints. Everything I have told you was meant to explain and justify why this definite article appears. But let me say no more, so that I may finish the passage. “And His garment”—the garment of the One who, he says, was the Ancient of Days and was seated—“His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head...” Saint Cyril explains these things a little further on, so I shall not explain them to you now.
“The hair of His head,” His hair, “was like pure wool,” like very white, very clean wool—like cotton, we might say. “His throne was a flame of fire”; His throne, he says, was fiery. “Its wheels were burning fire. A river of fire...” Let us read it; we shall find it again a little further on in Saint Cyril. “It flowed before Him.” A fiery river of fire flowed forth. Instead of water, the river contained fire; fire was flowing. Imagine a channel filled with gasoline or oil, and someone sets it alight so that the whole thing catches fire and flows like fire.
“A thousand thousands ministered to Him.” Who were they? Angels. They serve Him. “They ministered”—they served Him. “And ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him,” meaning a countless multitude. “The court sat in judgment”; that is, the tribunal was established. The tribunal was established, “and the books were opened.” To use modern legal language, the court records were brought in. The file, or the files, of the accused were produced. Whenever a judge hears a case, he opens the relevant file and examines the case of the accused.
“Then I watched because of the sound of the great words which that horn was speaking”—the Antichrist—“until the Beast was slain and destroyed.” The Beast, the Antichrist, was killed and vanished. “And its body was given over to be burned with fire.” The Gospel—forgive me, the book of the Apocalypse—says that “he was cast alive into the lake of fire that burns with fire and brimstone.” This is eternal Hell, the second death. “As for the remaining beasts, their dominion was taken away”; they lost their authority, “yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. I watched in the visions of the night”—I watched, I kept watching—“and behold, with the clouds of heaven...”
“With the clouds of heaven,” or “upon the clouds of heaven”; it means the same thing. “One like the Son of Man was coming.” Someone who appeared like the Son of Man—that is, as a man. “And He came as far as the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him.” He came as far as the thrones of the Ancient of Days, that is, of God. This Someone who appeared as a man—you see, “like the Son of Man,” like a man—arrived there and was led forward. By whom was He presented? By the holy angels, who led Him as far as the thrones of the Ancient of Days, before Him, into His presence. This, my dear friends, is what the Prophet Daniel tells us. Perhaps we shall return to it. Saint Cyril takes this passage and says, “He comes toward the Father.” Who comes? The One who is “like the Son of Man.” I would like to dwell for a moment on this phrase, “like the Son of Man.” As you know, Jesus Christ chose for Himself the title “Son of Man.” He called Himself the Son of Man. This title, “Son of Man,” appears in very many passages. Yet, if you will, it is not an entirely arbitrary choice.
It is prophesied in the Old Testament. We can see clearly that the Prophet Daniel refers to Him here as “like the Son of Man.” The word “like” does not cast doubt upon His human nature. Rather, it indicates that He is Someone else who appears in human nature. We could therefore say that “like the Son of Man” means the same as “the God-Man.” I do not simply say “Son of Man”; I also include the word “like”: “like the Son of Man,” because although He is God, He appears as a man. This is very significant. Daniel did not say merely, “a man appearing as a man.” You see the precision here as well.
In the wording itself. That is, we would say—and I repeat it because it is so important—the God-Man. This is highly significant. Jesus Christ chooses this title for Himself because, first of all, He wished to show that He is truly human. Second, He wished to show the depth of His humility—not humility here in the sense of the virtue, but in the sense of His descent, His lowering of Himself. He humbled Himself so far as to become man, according to the words, “He bowed the heavens and came down.” “He bowed” means that He lowered the heavens. Of course, how can the heavens be lowered? This lowering is the Incarnation.
When Heaven reaches the earth, it does not mean that the earth has been raised, but that the heavens have bowed down and descended. This means that God comes down. And what does it mean that He comes down? He descends to the level of man, through the Theotokos. Thus He came and drew near to us. Through this humility, this descent, He wishes to reveal His love. He also wished to show that the One whom they hung upon the Cross—this Son of Man—will come to judge mankind. And people will say, “Is this really He? The One whom we despised throughout history?” Not merely at that time,
but throughout history. This is the One whom we despised. We were wrong. The Lord therefore wishes to reveal this final truth: yes, I, the man, am the Judge of the living and the dead. And there is no other name under heaven. Under heaven. What name exists above the heavens? Above the heavens there is only the name of God. But under heaven there is the name of the God-Man—if you will, the name “Son of Man,” or, more precisely, “as the Son of Man.” In a single word, I would say: the God-Man, Jesus Christ. This is the one unique name under heaven. Why “under heaven”? Because He assumes human nature, which belongs beneath the heavens, not above the heavens, where God alone belongs. Thus our Lord chooses this name, this title, to reveal these things and still more. “He comes to the Father.” When? When does He come to the Father? Daniel said that He was brought before Him. He says, “I beheld,” and then: I looked and saw someone “like the Son of Man upon the clouds of heaven.” Where did he see Him? Where was He? And afterward He was led to the Father. Pay attention, beloved, to what is contained within this single verse:
two movements within the same phrase, within the same image. Two movements. When the Son of God, as the Word (Logos), as the Wisdom of God, became incarnate, He did not take His human body from Heaven. He took it from the earth; He took it from the Theotokos. Having received it from the Theotokos, He raised that body into the heavens through the Ascension. The first movement, then, is this: the Son of God, having become incarnate, ascended. And when He ascended, where did He go? Holy Scripture is filled with testimony on this point.
Now the New Testament speaks of it as an event of history. The Apostle Paul and others tell us that He ascended into Heaven and sat at the right hand of God the Father. What does it mean that “He sat at the right hand of God the Father”? Saint Stephen saw Him at the right hand of the glory of God, just as the Apostle Paul says. Yet there He was standing, for the reason I gave you yesterday: He was coming to Saint Stephen’s aid. In reality, however, He sits—that is, He rests. To sit means to rest and to exercise authority, as I explained earlier. What does this mean? It means that He brought human nature with Him
to the right hand of God the Father. As the Word (Logos), He is present everywhere. But what He carries and brings with Him is human nature. Here we see the full significance of His being the Son of Man. The Son of God became the Son of Man. We see how weighty this is. He therefore ascends into the heavens, carrying our own nature with Him, and opens the way along which we too shall walk. For when the Resurrection of the dead takes place, we shall follow this very same path. If Christ had not opened this path through His Ascension, it would never have been possible for us to walk it. Who has gone into Heaven?
Do not tell me that we have gone there, or shall go there, in rockets. Do not say that. Anyone who said such a thing would, at the very least, have to be called unphilosophical—so that I do not call him foolish. For what is the universe? It is enclosed. Where can you go to escape the universe? Even if you travelled for millions of years at the speed of light, you would still remain within the universe. You could never get outside it. And once a hundred years had passed, you would be dead. So how would you leave, and where would you go? Unless, inside the rocket, you had a child, and that child had a child, and that child another child, generation after generation, and several billion years passed before
you reached some supposed edge. And when you reached the edge of the universe—though there is no edge, no edge—you would merely discover another point within the universe, just as you are now at a point here on earth. And what would you have accomplished? I say this because there are those overconfident optimists who say, “Why do we need religion? We have rockets; we can go there, out there.” What foolishness! Or, to put it more mildly, what lack of thought! They speak foolishly and without reflection. And so, beloved, the way has been opened; this is a fact. Many witnesses saw the Ascension of Christ as an actual event. Many witnesses also saw the risen Christ. And His life after the Ascension has been seen and continues always to be seen. Who saw Him first?
Saint Stephen. We say first, although the Apostles probably saw many things and may have seen Christ many times. But when the Apostle Paul was on the road to Damascus, did he not see the Lord in glory? He did. Yet is the Lord not in Heaven? Because of the hypostatic union—that is, because He is one person—His human nature too is now present everywhere. Present everywhere. It is not only His divinity that is present everywhere; His human nature is also present everywhere, in a manner beyond explanation and comprehension. Thus, beloved, He ascends; He ascends...
You saw here that myriads accompany Him, escort Him, and lead Him forward. Yes, they were angels. But at the Ascension the angels were not made visible to mankind, because the scene would have become too crowded and people’s attention would have been drawn away from Jesus Christ. And now He is at the right hand of God the Father. This is the first movement. He was brought forward, honorably escorted by myriads upon myriads of holy angels. Honorably escorted. Indeed, the Church uses fitting Psalms in her hymnography. There is that Psalm in which the holy angels speak to one another: “Who is this who ascends? The Lord of Glory.” “Lift up,” it says, “be lifted up, O everlasting gates.” Do you know what these everlasting gates are? They are the gates of Paradise that were shut, together with the flaming sword that turned in every direction. And do you know what the gates and the turning sword signify? The impossibility of man’s returning to Paradise—not the earthly Paradise, not the earthly Paradise, but the Kingdom of God. Earthly Paradise was here, in Mesopotamia. That is quite simple. But this sword and these everlasting gates signify man’s mortality, his material condition,
and his sinfulness. These three. Mortality would never have allowed him to enter the Kingdom of God, because if he entered, he would die there. Sinfulness would never have allowed him to enter the Kingdom of God, for how could sinful man touch the Holy God? And then there is man’s material condition: how could material man reach a spiritual realm? These three constitute the everlasting gates through which man could not pass. And now the holy angels see Jesus Christ passing through these gates, because He assumed human nature, yet was without sin. He possessed materiality, because He received flesh from
the Theotokos—our own flesh. Yes, He possessed materiality. And He possessed mortality, yet mortality no longer holds Him, because Christ conquered death: He rose from the dead. And now the holy angels hymn Him as He ascends, asking one another, “Who is this?” “Lift up,” they say, “O you rulers.” Who are these rulers? The Archangels. “O Archangels, open the everlasting gates, that He may enter.” Who is this who enters? The Lord of Glory, as the Son of Man. These are majestic things, beloved—majestic truths, all bound together. They are not fairy tales. They are events joined to prophecy, like water mixed with cement. Cement, as I have told you many times in this example—forgive me for repeating it—is powder.
Water is liquid. I can blow the powder away, and I can sweep the water aside. But join the water to the cement powder and see what happens: stone. Join the events to the prophecy and see what happens: stone. In other words, solidity and certainty. The fulfillment of prophecy through actual events gives us assurance. Many people ask, “How do we know this is true?” This is how: prophecy joined to events gives the truth and its confirmation the firmness of rock. So the Lord ascended. That is the first movement. Now the Lord prepares for the second movement, which we might call His descent.
If I may use that expression, His descent will take place when He comes again to judge the world. Where do we see this? In the Book of Daniel. The books, it says, were opened, and the court was seated—a judicial tribunal, with what we might call the evidence of all that mankind has done. A little later Saint Cyril says, “Your prayers and your psalmody are written down. But your acts of fornication are also written down.” Everything is recorded. That comes a little later, in paragraph twenty-three. And so now the Lord returns. But He comes again with the holy angels. Just as they received Him, so in the same manner
they accompany Him as He comes upon the clouds of heaven. We shall see this a little later, where Saint Cyril himself says, “upon the clouds of heaven.” Daniel saw it, and the Lord Himself said it to Caiaphas: “upon the clouds of heaven.” But now He comes as Judge. He will gather His own, the devout. Does not the Apostle Paul say in his Epistle to the Thessalonians that we shall rise, and that those of us who remain will be changed, passing from corruption to incorruption and from mortality to immortality? The dead will rise incorruptible and immortal, and then, he says, we shall all be caught up into the air to meet the Lord.
We shall meet the Lord as He descends and we ascend. Then He will gather all who believed in Him, all who became His people throughout the ages, beginning with Adam and Eve. Abel is described by Christ Himself as righteous—that is, as one who is saved.
Let us dwell on this. All who throughout the ages stood righteous before God will rise from the dead. He will take them with Him. And what are they? His spoils of victory. Like a triumphant king who entered history, conquered, and now gathers the spoils.
The spoils are human beings. And where does He take these spoils? This is the second movement: He ascends to the Father. Holy Scripture says somewhere, “And when the Son has subjected all things, then He Himself will also be subject to the Father.” But this passage has been misunderstood. Saint Cyril interprets it a little later, and we shall examine it when we reach that point. Thus we see Him coming with the spoils—for that word means the spoils of victory. He comes, and in this second movement He comes to the Father and lays before Him, so to speak, the contents of His spoils: everything He has gathered and won throughout history through faith.
To speak in human terms, this offering means that the righteous enter the Kingdom of God. This is the great victory. Thus we see that the Prophet Daniel beholds the whole history of Christ, both the first and the second movement. In the first he sees—or says—“coming,” and afterward, “He was brought forward.” Listen carefully, please. It is truly astonishing. He said, “coming upon the clouds of heaven,” and then said, “He was brought forward.” These are two opposite movements. How is He “coming”? Someone who comes is coming toward me, and afterward He is brought to the Father. That “coming toward me” contains a twofold movement: the Son of God came into the world, and He will come again at His Second Coming.
The words “He was brought forward”—that is, He was led—refer to His ascending the first time, and then ascending the second time, no longer carrying only His own incorruptible and immortal flesh, but all humanity that became His own, His own people. Within a single picture, within one movement, we can see all these things which, with God’s help, we have now explained, beloved. “A river of fire flowed forth, testing mankind.” Daniel also said this; I read it to you. A river of fire, he says, flows from the throne.
Saint Cyril says that the river of fire is “a test of men.” What does this mean? He explains it himself, and the Apostle Paul has also told us: “If someone’s works are of gold, he becomes more radiant.” If his works are gold, the fire does not destroy the gold; on the contrary, it makes the gold shine even more brightly. “But if someone’s praxis is like straw and without substance”—if his works were straw and grass, and his praxis, his active ascetic life, was worthless—it is utterly consumed by the fire. Not merely burned, but utterly consumed by the fire. The Apostle Paul put it this way.
“Let each person take care how he builds.” What does “builds” mean? It means the building of his salvation, the building of his very existence with respect to salvation. So let each person take care. If, he says, one builds with gold, silver, or precious stones—such as marble, or other costly stones, even diamonds, if you like—or with grass and straw, then the Day of the Lord, the fire of the Day of the Lord, will test each person’s building. And the one who has built with straw will see what he built burned up, while he himself will remain, as the Apostle says, naked, as though passing through fire. This is a difficult passage to interpret, and many meanings are given to it. But at a first reading, it means that he will be left naked, like someone whose house has burned down.
Think for a moment, my beloved. If we hear, “Fire! Fire!” are we going to sit inside and let the house burn around us while we try to gather our belongings? “Fire! Fire!” Suppose I live on the first floor of an apartment building. What will those above me do? They will look for whatever they can gather, and for a way out so that they can escape. And once they have escaped and the apartment building has finally burned down,
what will they be left with? Only the clothes they managed to take.
They will be left, as we say, naked—not literally without clothing. A person who has saved nothing of his possessions is called naked. So, my brother, if your works are made of grass, you will stand on the Day of Judgment before the Judge empty-handed. You will have nothing to present. It is terrible—terrible that we may find ourselves in such a state. You know, there are many works that people consider important. They have spent their lives on them and poured much sweat into them, yet those works cannot endure into eternity. Suppose I am a mayor. I am not; I am only giving an example. Suppose I am a mayor, and I build the streets of a city and create parks. Certainly, this is a work of civilization, we might say.
After all, is it good for a city to remain covered in mud and so forth? They make the city beautiful. This person has accomplished a work. Yet although that work belongs to the city—although it consists of roads, gardens, and parks—if it is done out of love for mankind and for the glory of God, then it too has its place. But if it is not done out of love for God and for the glory of God—if it is done merely out of love for people, if you like, or for my own glory, or simply because, as mayor, I must have some achievement to display—then that work is grass and straw. It will not endure on the Day of Judgment. Far more enduring is the act of giving a cup of cold water
in the name of Jesus Christ to a passerby who says to me, “Give me a cup of water.” This helps you understand what it means to build with gold or to build with straw. And silver and the other materials represent, if you like, a certain gradation: the ear of wheat of which one yields a hundredfold—that is, a hundred grains—another sixtyfold, and another thirtyfold. Yet all of them contain grain; they are true ears of wheat. They are not empty ears containing nothing, which in the end become straw to be burned.
Let us continue. Ah, I must tell you something here about this fire. Saint Cyril calls it “a test of men”: it tests people and reveals what each one possesses. I have spoken to you about this fire before, though perhaps it was years ago. Forgive me—yes, I have spoken of it. Basil the Great also refers to it in his Hexaemeron.
It is perhaps a very beautiful interpretation that can help us understand precisely what Hell is. Our Lord said that Hell is fire and darkness—fire and darkness. There, He says, is the eternal fire that has been prepared, and so forth. He also said that it is darkness,
“outer darkness.” “Outer” means external, far removed: a darkness in which there is nothing at all. If I close my eyes at this moment, my beloved, that is not darkness, because some light still passes through my eyelids. Night is not darkness either, even if there is neither moonlight nor starlight. Compared with that far-removed, absolute darkness, it is not darkness at all. That darkness is terrible. So the question arises: How can there be both fire and darkness? Is not fire luminous? How, then, can there be fire and darkness together? Do these not seem contradictory? Basil the Great gives us the answer, and it is a most beautiful one.
Holy Scripture says that God is light. “God is light,” says John the Evangelist. God is light. We see this even in the Transfiguration of Christ. God is light. What is this light? It is what we know as the uncreated light. It is not created. It is not the light of the sun, nor the light produced by these lamps. It is uncreated light. This uncreated light surrounds the divine essence, which, of course, is also uncreated. Thus, in the Godhead, we have two things that are uncreated: the essence of God and the divine uncreated energies of God. Both are uncreated. This was the great controversy
that Saint Gregory Palamas had with the West, because the Western mind could not distinguish God’s uncreated energies from God’s uncreated essence. This theology, of course, is Patristic and long predates Saint Gregory Palamas. Saint Gregory Palamas simply took the occasion, when the issue arose, to gather what the earlier Fathers and Holy Scripture had said, and he demonstrated that the divine uncreated energies truly exist. Thus, we speak of the uncreated light. When I say, “I see God,” I do not see God in His essence; I see His divine uncreated energies, the uncreated light.
What comes into contact with creation is not the uncreated essence of God, but His divine uncreated energies. God’s divine uncreated energies are uncreated, just as His grace is uncreated. The grace of God is not created; it is uncreated. All these are the divine uncreated energies of God. We speak of the love of God: this is an uncreated divine energy of God. All are uncreated. Thus, light is an uncreated divine energy, and it is the divine uncreated energies in general that come into contact with creation. So when Christ was transfigured, what was transfigured? His body was created. He received it from the Theotokos, for it came into being and was created. What was it, then, that illuminated His created human body?
It was an uncreated divine energy. Thus, God is light. But this material light, this created light—the light of the sun—is, as it were, an image of the uncreated light. We call Christ the Sun of Righteousness, and the visible sun is an image of that Sun, Christ, who is the Sun of Righteousness, and so forth. Now material light has many properties. Created, material light has the qualities of illumination and heat; that is, it gives light and warmth, and it also...
It also produces chemical effects. If I put this object out in the sun, its color fades. You may ask, “What made it fade?” It means that the light acted chemically upon the fabric. It has biological effects as well. When I go out into the sun and its rays fall upon me, I become healthier and receive vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced by the sun’s heat—or its light, I believe. So all these things you see are properties of created light. The divine light possesses all the divine uncreated energies I mentioned earlier: uncreated energy, uncreated love, uncreated grace, and so forth—also uncreated warmth. What is this uncreated warmth?
In this present life, we often experience God within us as a kind of warmth. This warmth has nothing to do with the warmth produced by heaters. Saint Seraphim of Sarov stood amid the snow and felt warmth. It was the warmth of the uncreated divine energy, of the uncreated light. When someone receives Holy Communion unworthily—and the foremost form of unworthiness is refusing to accept that it is the Body and Blood of Christ; that is the first sin, and all the others follow—and cries out, “I am burning! I am burning!” what is this? It is an uncreated divine energy from God. When the demons cried, “Do not torment us,” what was going to torment them?
The uncreated divine energy of God, the uncreated light. The uncreated light? Not exactly. Now I will tell you what Basil the Great says. What I have just called the uncreated light is not quite exact, but I said it that way because—how else could I put it? I will now make the distinction and state it correctly. Pay attention. This uncreated light proceeds from the divine essence and pours out over the whole creation and beyond it, over everything that exists. When it reaches the saints in the Kingdom of God, this uncreated light reaches them only as light, without its burning property. This is what Christ said:
“The righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.” This is also the glory possessed by the holy angels. Yet this divine energy also goes forth—and here it is pictured as a river, so that you may understand the image—and reaches Hell. In Hell, it does not arrive as light, but only as burning. That is why there is darkness in Hell: it does not reach there as light. And that is why Hell is fire: the burning power of this divine uncreated energy reaches there. Some people say naively, if not blasphemously, “What, then? Will there be cauldrons in Hell in which we shall boil?” My beloved, as I have told you, if only they were cauldrons! By cauldrons, we mean material burning. But this burning is terrible. It is what the demons tremble before, and what they will certainly endure unto the ages of ages. Thus, the divine uncreated energy appears in different ways. In reality it does not change, but, so to speak, one property is held back while the other is manifested; otherwise, both are present within it. In the Kingdom of God it is manifested as light, while in Hell it is manifested as eternal fire. And now the Prophet Daniel presents this reality as a river flowing with fire.
And here Saint Cyril interprets it in the way
I have just explained to you. Saint Cyril says all this a little further on. When we reach it, I will not analyze it; I will only read it and explain whatever needs interpretation. “And the Father sits, having His garment white as snow and the hair of His head like pure wool.” This is spoken in human terms; that is, it is expressed anthropomorphically. Why? Because He will reign over those who have not been defiled by sins. The whiteness signifies the absence of sin, especially in those who will be saved and freed from their sins. “For I will make your sins white as snow and as wool,” He says through the Prophet Isaiah. “I will make you white,” He says, “and remove your sins; I will make you white as snow, like white wool.”
It is a sign of the forgiveness of sins, or even of sinlessness—a sign either of forgiveness or of freedom from sin. “And the Lord comes from the heavens upon the clouds, He who ascended upon the clouds.” Pay attention to this; it is a beautiful surprise, truly beautiful. Yet it is precisely what I explained to you earlier. He comes upon the clouds of heaven. When? When He descends—He who departed upon the clouds when He ascended. This is what I explained to you before. “For He Himself has said”—because He Himself said it—“and they shall see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with power.” What is this power? It is the holy angels. “And with great glory.” What is this glory? The uncreated light. The Evangelist Matthew records these words for us in the twenty-fourth chapter of his Gospel.
And so, my beloved, you see that these are majestic things, firmly established things, true events. Some have already taken place; others are yet to come. Those that are still to come have, we might say, their guarantee in those that have already taken place. And the faithful person always abides in these truths. If someone chooses to turn away from them after having experienced their faithfulness, he will find himself facing chaos, an emptiness. This is the emptiness felt by those who depart far from God after they have already tasted God. If we really could turn away from God, especially in the name of some supposed freedom, then I ask you: Why do we feel empty? This shows that we were created for God, and that God became man for us—for us alone—and we were made for Him alone.

Είπα εικόνα. Ο Θεός δεν έχει μαλλιά, ούτε πολύ παραπάνω άσπρα μαλλιά. Σας είπα, να λέγω, ο Θεός είναι ο πάντοτε νέος, ο πάντοτε αιώνιος· δεν υπάρχει στον Θεό χρόνος. Αλλά είναι εικόνες για να μπορούμε να αντιληφθούμε εκείνα τα οποία αλλιώτικα θα ήσαν αψηλάφητα, θα ήσαν απροσέγγιστα. «Και το ένδυμα αυτού...» Συγγνώμη, όταν λέει «οι θρόνοι», να σας το πω έτσι, μια που το ανέφερα, για να μην σας αφήσω στην απορία. Ο Χριστός δεν είπε ότι θα καθίσετε πάνω σε δώδεκα θρόνους και θα κρίνετε τις δώδεκα φυλές του Ισραήλ; Αγαπητοί μου, δεν είπε ακόμη ο Χριστός ότι η Βασιλεία είναι ετοιμασμένη προ καταβολής κόσμου;
στα δεξιά του Θεού Πατρός. Ώστε ως Λόγος είναι πανταχού παρών. Αλλά εκείνο που κουβαλά, συναποκομίζει, είναι η ανθρωπίνη φύση. Εδώ βλέπει κανείς την βαρύτητα ότι είναι ο Υιός του ανθρώπου. Έγινε Υιός του ανθρώπου ο Υιός του Θεού. Βλέπει κανείς αυτή τη βαρύτητα. Οπότε, ανέρχεται εις τους ουρανούς, συναποκομίζοντας τη δική μας τη φύση, και ανοίγει το δρόμο τον οποίο εμείς θα βαδίσουμε. Διότι όταν θα γίνει η Ανάσταση των νεκρών, αυτόν τον ίδιο δρόμο εμείς θα ακολουθήσουμε. Και αν αυτόν τον δρόμο δεν τον άνοιγε με την Ανάληψή του ο Χριστός, δεν θα ήταν δυνατόν ποτέ εμείς να τον βαδίσουμε. Ποιος πήγε στον Ουρανό;
να φτάσεις σε μιαν άκρη, και όταν θα έχεις φτάσει στην άκρη του σύμπαντος — δεν υπάρχει άκρη, δεν υπάρχει άκρη — θα ανακαλύψεις απλώς ένα σημείο του σύμπαντος, όπως είσαι και εδώ στη γη. Και τι έκανες; Γι' αυτό σας είπα, δεν νομίζω, τα λέγω γιατί υπάρχουν εκείνοι οι υπεραισιόδοξοι οι οποίοι λένε: «Τι έχουμε ανάγκη από τη θρησκεία; Έχουμε τους πυραύλους, εκεί, εκεί». Τι βλακεία! Για να μην πω αφιλοσοφία. Ανόητα, ασυλλόγιστα, έτσι μιλάνε, ανόητα. Λοιπόν, αγαπητοί μου, ο δρόμος ανοίχθηκε, είναι γεγονός. Την Ανάληψη του Χριστού σαν γεγονός την είδαν πολλοί μάρτυρες. Και τον Αναστημένο Χριστό τον είδαν πολλοί μάρτυρες. Και τη ζωή του μετά την Ανάληψή του την είδαν και τη βλέπουν πάντοτε. Ποιος την είδε πρώτος;
τον συνοδεύουν, ερχόμενον επί των νεφελών του ουρανού. Θα το δούμε λίγο πιο κάτω, που το λέγει και ο Άγιος Κύριος: «Επί των νεφελών του ουρανού». Και τότε, όπως το είδε ο Δανιήλ, όπως το είπε ο ίδιος ο Κύριος στον Καϊάφα, «επί των νεφελών του ουρανού». Αλλά έρχεται τώρα ως κριτής. Θα πάρει τους δικούς του, τους ευσεβείς. Δεν λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος στην προς Θεσσαλονικείς επιστολή του ότι εμείς, λέγει, θα αναστηθούμε, εμείς οι περιλειπόμενοι θα αλλάξουμε, θα περάσουμε από τη φθορά στην αφθαρσία και από την θνητότητα στην αθανασία, οι νεκροί θα αναστηθούν άφθαρτοι και αθάνατοι και τότε, λέγει, εμείς όλοι θα αρπαχθούμε εις αέρα, εις απάντηση του Κυρίου;
Εκείνο που έρχεται σε επαφή με την δημιουργία δεν είναι η ουσία του Θεού, η άκτιστος, αλλά οι άκτιστες ενέργειες του Θεού. Και οι άκτιστες ενέργειες του Θεού, όπως και η χάρις του Θεού, είναι άκτιστος. Η χάρις του Θεού δεν είναι κτιστή, είναι άκτιστος. Όλα αυτά είναι οι ενέργειες του Θεού. Λέμε η αγάπη του Θεού. Είναι άκτιστος ενέργεια του Θεού. Άκτιστα. Λοιπόν, το φως είναι άκτιστος ενέργεια και έρχεται η άκτιστος ενέργεια γενικά σε επαφή με τη δημιουργία. Έτσι, όταν ο Χριστός μετεμορφώθηκε, τι μετεμορφώθηκε; Το σώμα Του ήταν κτιστό. Το πήρε από τη Θεοτόκο, αφού έγινε. Ήτο κτιστό το σώμα Του. Εκείνο που φώτισε το ανθρώπινο σώμα Του, το κτιστόν, τι ήταν;
Ακόμα ότι έχει χημικά αποτελέσματα. Χημικά αποτελέσματα. Ξεβάφει αυτό. Άμα το βγάλω αυτό στον ήλιο, ξεβάφει. Θα μου πείτε, τι ξέβαψε; Σημαίνει ότι ενήργησε χημικώς επάνω σε αυτό το ύφασμα. Έχει βιολογικά αποτελέσματα. Όταν βγω στον ήλιο και με βλέπει ο ήλιος, γίνομαι υγιής, μαζεύω βιταμίνη D. Είναι η βιταμίνη D που δημιουργείται με την ηλιακή θερμότητα, το φως, μου φαίνεται. Λοιπόν, όλα αυτά που βλέπετε είναι ιδιότητες του φωτός, του κτιστού φωτός, του κτιστού. Το Θείον Φως έχει όλες τις ενέργειες που σας έδειξα προηγουμένως. Άκτιστος ενέργεια, άκτιστος αγάπη, άκτιστος χάρις και ούτω καθεξής. Άκτιστος θερμότης. Ποια είναι αυτή η άκτιστος θερμότης;
Στην παρούσα ζωή αισθανόμεθα τον Θεόν πολλές φορές μέσα μας σαν μία ζεστασιά. Δεν έχει καμία σχέση αυτή η ζεστασιά με τη ζεστασιά που έχουν οι θερμάστρες. Ο Άγιος Σεραφείμ του Σάρωφ ήτανε μέσα στα χιόνια και αισθάνεται μια ζεστασιά. Είναι αυτή η ζεστασιά από την άκτιστη ενέργεια, από το άκτιστο φως. Όταν κάποιος πάει και κοινωνήσει ανάξια —και το ανάξια κυρίως όταν δεν δέχεται ότι είναι σώμα και αίμα Χριστού, είναι το πρώτο αμάρτημα, όλα τα άλλα είναι μετά— και φωνάζει «καίομαι, καίομαι», τι είναι αυτό; Άκτιστος ενέργεια από τον Θεό. Όταν οι δαίμονες φώναζαν «μη μας βασανίσεις», από τι θα εβασανίζοντο;
