Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem places the renewal of creation, the resurrection of the dead, and Christ’s Second Coming together after the defeat of the Antichrist. Against cyclical views of history and impersonal transformation, Christianity proclaims a linear creation and the preservation of each unique human person through resurrection. Both the righteous and the wicked will receive immortal bodies, but the righteous will be glorified with Christ while the unrepentant will face eternal judgment.

My dear friends, we have completed what Saint Cyril says about the Antichrist in his Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture.
We now come...
to paragraph nineteen of the same Catechetical Lecture, to consider what comes after the Antichrist. You may remember that at the beginning of the lecture Saint Cyril spoke about the renewal of the universe, although that is not, strictly speaking, the proper sequence. The sequence is this: first the Antichrist will come, and afterward we will have the renewal of the universe and the Second Coming. The renewal of the universe coincides with the Resurrection of the Dead and with the Second Coming. These three—the renewal of the universe, the Resurrection of the Dead, and the Second Coming of Christ—coincide.
They coincide in time. Saint Cyril spoke to us then about the renewal of the universe, and now we come to the Second Coming of Christ. As we continue, I will repeatedly point out—until we finish this Catechetical Lecture, which still has many paragraphs—that the main emphasis does not fall on the Antichrist. The main emphasis falls on the Second Coming of Christ. Yet perhaps because we are afraid, or because we are poorly instructed—and for that we ourselves are to blame—we place the emphasis somewhere else. I would ask: Why should I fear the Antichrist? Thank you.
Should I not fear Jesus Christ, who can condemn me to eternal Hell? At most, the Antichrist can cause me to suffer martyrdom, but he cannot cast me into eternal Hell. And lest anyone think that this is merely my own statement, the Lord Himself says: “Do not fear those who kill the body. I will tell you whom you should fear: fear Him who has the power to cast you into the Gehenna of fire.” The One who has the power to cast us into the Gehenna of fire is Christ alone. We should not, therefore, be thrown into turmoil over the Antichrist. The One we should truly fear is Christ alone. When should we fear Him, and to what extent?
When we have not lived according to the will of Christ. And so, my dear friends, beginning with paragraph nineteen, with God’s help we will examine and understand everything concerning the Second Coming of Christ. “We eagerly await and expect the Lord from heaven, coming upon the clouds.” The expression “we eagerly await,” like “we expect,” means that we receive and await the Lord from heaven. This is a matter of faith.
It is a matter of confessing the faith. The Creed—as its very name, the Creed of Faith, tells us—contains this teaching. “I believe,” we say, and here I am referring to each of the articles of the Creed, “and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead.” The Second Coming of Christ is therefore a matter of faith. Yet there are many Christians who do not await the Second Coming of Christ.
When you ask them, “Do you believe that Christ will come again?” they answer, “How should I know?” Then what do you believe? Do you believe that Christ came, did something upon the earth, and then left everything abandoned and unfinished? For the work of salvation is brought to completion through His Second Coming. Someone may say that Christ came down from heaven and gave us salvation, that we follow His Gospel and are saved. He may say, “We are saved.” No, our salvation is not yet complete, because the Greek word for “save” comes from a word meaning whole and complete. Indeed, this word is found...
in the Apostle Peter, where it refers to wholeness. And when we speak of wholeness, we mean salvation: the whole human person is saved. If I die now, I will exist as a soul. My soul will go to Paradise, but only my soul will be there. My poor body will remain in the earth, where it will decay and decompose. Yet this is the body that fasted, preserved chastity, labored, and kept vigil. For example, the day after tomorrow is Friday, and we will have a vigil here.
Come to the vigil. Who will keep vigil? My soul? My body will keep vigil, because I will give no sleep to my eyes. This body has labored and sweated, and it has cultivated those virtues that involve the body. Will this body not also fall asleep in death? Will it then remain outside salvation—or, tragically, outside condemnation? When we speak of salvation, we mean that the soul will return and be reunited with its body: the same old body, but made new, incorruptible, and immortal. This will happen when Christ comes again. Therefore, my dear friends, I can tell you plainly, because Holy Scripture is...
perfectly clear on this point: the work of salvation remains unfinished if there is no Second Coming of Christ. You understand that this belongs to the unfolding course of Christ’s work to save us. The Apostle Paul expresses this beautifully in chapter fifteen of his First Epistle to the Corinthians: “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then what are we doing? Then we are doing nothing.” All our labor, then, has been in vain.
Indeed, we have also lost this present life, because we do not pursue worldly amusements—assuming that such amusements can give a person genuine pleasure and joy. We have lost even that, and, as the Apostle says, we are of all people the most miserable. For we lose the present life by clinging to the faith and doing what Christ commanded us. If none of this is real, if there is no resurrection of the dead, then, as he says, “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.” And if Christ has not been raised, then our faith is futile and our preaching is also futile.
They fall into emptiness. Christ was raised so that the dead might rise and the work of salvation—that is, the restoration of the whole human person—might be completed. Those who reject the Second Coming of Christ are therefore rejecting everything in substance. Their faith is severed and incomplete, cut off halfway, as though it had no conclusion. It truly has no conclusion. Christ, then, will come again. In an earlier talk I told you something about this, and I hope you will not mind if I say just a few words about it now, my dear friends. Those who accept a linear understanding of history accept that Christ will come again. “Linear” means that history has a beginning and an end.
A linear understanding means that the universe was created out of nothing and came into being, into existence. At a particular moment its history began, and at a particular moment human history also began. At some point the history of the universe will end, and at some point human history will also end. This is the linear understanding of history and creation. Christianity alone holds this linear understanding; no one else does. All philosophical systems, both ancient and modern, and all non-Christian religions—that is, pagan, this-worldly religions—have a cyclical understanding of creation and the universe.
They say that the world was not created out of nothing; it has always existed, and because it has always existed, it will always exist. Since it had no beginning, it will have no end. All that remains, then, is endless repetition—a cycle. At first sight it may appear dynamic, but at its deepest level it is a static condition. There are dynamic cycles of life and death, and nothing more: changes and transformations. This is also one of the teachings given at the eighteenth degree by the Rosicrucians and Freemasons. They say—and pay attention to this—that death and corruption do not exist.
There is only transformation. What does death mean, they ask? You pass from one form into another. Death does not exist. In this way they claim to abolish death. But in reality they are merely playing with words. It is like a display at an exhibition where they want to add a little pumping device. They put a bucket of water beneath a table and set up a small fountain. A little pump shoots the water upward; it falls back into the basin, returns to the bucket, and with that single bucket of water they keep the display running. There is no stream bringing fresh, flowing water from somewhere else. This is how they solve the problem of death. Do you understand?
They place it within a cycle by giving death a different interpretation. Death, they say, is nothing more than a change—and the human person is simply discarded. If I am going to continue existing in my child, then what becomes of me, of my own person? That question remains unanswered. The Resurrection of the Dead, grounded in the Resurrection of Christ as a fact and not a theory, preserves the unique human person. It is not merely the preservation of the human race, but of each person. Do you understand, my dear friends? These are profoundly important matters, profoundly important.
Therefore, “we eagerly await”—that is, we receive—and “we expect the Lord from heaven, coming upon the clouds.” He will come from heaven. Why? Because that is where He went. He departed from the earth and ascended into heaven. He had come from heaven to earth and appeared as man, being born through the Most Holy Theotokos—forgive me, born from the Most Holy Theotokos, not “through” her; that was an error in expression—from the Most Holy Theotokos. In other words, He did not merely pass through the Most Holy Theotokos; He received His flesh from her. What I am telling you is important. It is exceedingly important.
And...
He ascended into heaven, taking His human nature with Him. He did not cast it off or leave it somewhere upon the earth as though He no longer needed it and it therefore had no value, as some Protestants—not all—claim. He will return as both God and man. In chapter twenty-five of the Gospel according to Matthew, the Lord says: “When the Son of Man comes in His glory.” He does not say, “When the Son of God comes.” He says, “When the Son of Man comes,” which means that He will come with His human nature, because human nature is at the heart of our salvation. Therefore, He will return with His human nature.
He will give us what He Himself possesses: our human nature made incorruptible and immortal—or, better, a nature that will be made immortal and incorruptible. I will say no more for now about the words “upon the clouds,” because Saint Cyril discusses this a little later, and we shall examine it there. “Then angelic trumpets will sound; the dead in Christ will rise first; and the devout who are still living will be caught up in the clouds, receiving as the prize of their labors the honor that surpasses human nature, because their struggle also surpassed human strength.” As the Apostle Paul writes to the Thessalonians: “The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” Let me give you a brief explanation. “Angelic trumpets,” he says, will sound at that time. The dead who are in Christ will rise first. Then the devout who are still alive when these things take place
will be caught up upon the clouds. As the prize and reward for their labors and struggles, they will receive honor beyond human measure, because they struggled beyond human strength. The Apostle Paul writes in his First Epistle to the Thessalonians, in the fourth chapter from the tenth verse onward, that the Lord will descend from heaven with a command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. Then the dead in Christ will rise first. Afterward, we who are alive and remain upon the earth will be caught up together with those who have risen from the dead, upon the clouds, to meet the Lord somewhere above the earth, in the air. And from that time onward we shall always be with Him. That is the passage in brief. But take heed, my beloved: these words from the First Epistle to the Thessalonians form a profoundly important passage, one that we hear whenever a funeral is served.
Christianity contains so many beautiful and hope-filled truths. Sadly, whether we are mourning or have come to accompany those who mourn, we do not pay attention. Usually our minds are elsewhere. Yet if we listened even to the epistle and Gospel readings—the Gospel passage in which Christ speaks about the Resurrection of the Dead—we would receive consolation. For there is no greater consolation than the proclamation of the Resurrection of the Dead. There is none greater. This passage, then, comes from the First Epistle to the Thessalonians.
Let us consider it briefly, without going into a fuller analysis. The Apostle Paul says that the voice of an archangel and the trumpet of God will be heard. What does this mean? It means that the summons to the Resurrection will be given.
In the Gospel according to John, in the passage we hear at funerals, the Lord says that the dead will then hear the voice of the Son of God, and they will rise. The dead will rise; they will be raised up. What is this voice? What is this trumpet? Let me remind you of something. When the Lord stood outside the tomb in which Lazarus had been buried—a sealed rock-hewn tomb, where Lazarus had lain dead for four days—He cried, “Lazarus, come forth!”
“Come out, Lazarus!” And Lazarus sat up in the tomb. Awe-inspiring, awe-inspiring, awe-inspiring! Christ cried, “Lazarus, come forth!” Or consider when He said to that young man, perhaps eighteen years old—what did He say?—“Arise.” He said to that youth, the only son of the widowed woman, “Young man, arise.” How far did that voice reach? When mourners cry aloud and weep, how far
does their voice carry? Only a few yards. It does not carry five hundred yards, to use a reasonable figure. But when Christ said, “Come forth,” or “Arise,” how far did His voice reach? It reached Hades, and the soul returned to the body. Whose voice can reach Hades? No one’s. Some people raise this question—indeed, it was a question asked by the children.
They tell us that Christianity is a religion like all the others. How, then, can we say that it is different? The other religions are human inventions, things devised by human reasoning. A person follows a religion in order to satisfy certain spiritual aspirations, we might say, or to ease the problems arising from his existence: the meaning of his existence and the phenomena of life. That is all they are. Nothing more. And one may give all this whatever name one wishes—myth, or anything else. Do not philosophers, and especially literary people, also use the language of redemption? Someone says, “I write a poem and find release. I write a poem and find release.” Such things are relative. They all remain within the circle of human activity. But who will deliver you from death?
You may pull your own hair and strain every power within you to lift yourself up, but you will achieve nothing. A hand must come from outside your own existence, grasp you by the hair, and raise you up. That hand belongs to God alone, the true God. And Jesus Christ, who will raise us from the dead, is the true God. We cannot simply say whatever we please or make comparisons, for there is no comparison. Here we have the truth, because we have events—real events. Do you understand, my beloved, the full scope of salvation in Christ? And then, as the Apostle says, who will descend from heaven? The Lord. Thus, a meeting will take place:
humanity will ascend, and Christ will descend. But before humanity ascends, this will occur: “The dead in Christ will rise first.” Here the word “first” refers to what happens before the ascent of those who remain alive. The passage is not saying that the devout dead will rise first and that afterward the ungodly dead will rise.
Do you want proof? When the Lord speaks about the Judgment, the picture is clear: everything takes place upon one and the same scene. Some stand at His right hand and others at His left. And what does He say? He explains why those on the right will be saved, and why those on the left will not be saved.
They are all present. The sinners are there as well, and the entire judgment unfolds together. This plainly indicates that the Resurrection takes place simultaneously. Yet I must tell you that when the Apostle Paul writes his First Epistle to the Thessalonians, his concern is not the ungodly, but the devout.
He simply does not speak about the ungodly. This does not mean that the ungodly will not rise. The other passage I mentioned, from the Gospel according to Matthew, bears witness to this, showing both the devout and the ungodly standing before Christ. Paul’s concern is to say: “I am not concerned here with what will happen to them. I am concerned with what will happen to you, the recipients of my epistle—you Thessalonians who have believed in Christ—and how you stand in relation to those who have died.” This is the relationship he is addressing; that is why he says, “Then we,” and so forth. Therefore, the Resurrection of the Dead will take place first. After the Resurrection of the Dead, “we who are alive and remain”—those of us who are living at that time—will be caught up.
The Apostle includes himself because he was still alive: “we who remain,” we who are still living upon the earth. What will happen to us? What will happen to us is explained in his First Epistle to the Corinthians. We are not now examining the Resurrection of the Dead itself, because Saint Cyril has a separate catechesis devoted to that subject. But since it may be a long time before we reach it—perhaps next year, if we are still alive; I do not know—let us say a few words about it now. There the Apostle says:
“For this corruptible body must put on incorruption, and this mortal body must put on immortality.”
Incorruption and immortality are not the same thing. Corruption is already at work within us. As I advance in age—I was a little child, then I grew up and grew old—I eat and drink. Why do I eat and drink? Because, for the present, I am resisting corruption. We overcome corruption, but only up to a point. After that, it is farewell to everything, and so
our resistance to corruption comes to an end. We also become ill; our bodies wear down; we thirst, hunger, and grow weary. All these are changes, and together they constitute corruption. Mortality, on the other hand, is simply this: I die. They are two different things, and both will be overcome. It would conceivably be possible for a person to endure the misery of corruption without actually dying. But both corruption and death exist, and both will be overcome. Concerning the Apostle’s word “this,” the sacred John Chrysostom says: “This, yet not this.”
It is a profoundly important little phrase—short and easy to remember. We should remember it well. This body will rise, “yet not this.” What does that mean? It will be this very body. It will not be something else, for the Apostle Paul clearly says that we shall stand before Christ with body and soul and give an account of everything we have done, both bodily and spiritually. Yet although it will be this body, it will not be as it is now. It will be the new body: the old body made new, incorruptible and immortal. Which body? The very one that dissolved in the grave and became earth; the one that was burned in the fire
and became ashes; the one eaten and digested by fish. The manner in which a person dies makes no difference. He who made all things out of nothing is able to gather the human body together again—each and every human body—even though, if you like, one human being’s matter passes into another. If I gather and eat plants from a cemetery, those plants may have grown from the flesh of a person whose body became fertilizer, and I take his cells into my own body. A stark example, is it not? Stark indeed. I say this to show you that one human being’s matter passes into another. Yet God can distinguish and restore every human being.
When some of the Corinthians objected, “But is that possible?” the Apostle answered them: “Some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.” Why? Because they did not know the power of God, and yet they spoke in this way. “To your shame,” the Apostle Paul tells the Corinthians. Therefore, my beloved, the dead will rise, and we shall receive our former body made incorruptible and immortal. It will be this body, yet it will not be as it is now, because it will possess new properties and qualities: those manifested in the risen body of Christ. We shall no longer be subject to what are called biological and natural laws.
This is very important. All of us, both sinners and the devout, will receive the same kind of body; the difference is that one will be glorified and the other condemned to Hell. As for those who are still living—for humanity will still exist—the Lord will destroy the Antichrist after his appearance. Christ will consume him with His breath, that is, with the greatest ease, although the Antichrist will have been terrifying to humanity. He will be destroyed by a single breath of Christ. And as the Apostle says—excuse me—“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, we shall be changed.” These are two images, one theoretical and the other practical, showing how instantaneous the Resurrection of the Dead and the transformation of the living into incorruption will be. “In a moment” means in an indivisible instant of time, a time so brief that it is almost zero. We might call it an atom of time. We no longer use that expression today, of course, but it means something that cannot be divided: the smallest possible interval.
The Apostle Paul then gives us another image, a practical one: “in the twinkling of an eye.” What is this twinkling? It is the opening and closing of the eyes. Of course, this is a very approximate image, because we know that blinking takes a considerable amount of time compared with the theoretical, indivisible instant we have just described. But there was no other way to express such things, and so they are described in this way. What does he say? Those of us who are still living will be changed. And how will we be changed? We shall pass from corruption into incorruption, and from mortality into immortality. We shall not first have died; we shall pass directly into incorruption. This is beautifully expressed in the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, in what I was saying about the Antichrist.
There is a subtle point in the Apocalypse, if we pay close attention. It says that both the Antichrist and the false prophet will be cast alive into the Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire means Hell—not Hades, for Hades will then have come to an end. Hades will give up its dead. It means Hell, because no one is in Hell yet—not even the demons, no one. And what does “alive” mean? It means that, without dying, they will have passed from corruption into incorruption and from mortality into immortality. What does this show? It shows us, beloved, that no interval of time comes between these events.
There is no interval between the Antichrist, Christ’s Second Coming, and the end of history. History ends there. This is characteristic and important. All these things will therefore happen as the Apostle Paul says here: “We who remain shall be caught up together with them.” With whom? With the dead—the devout who have risen. “We shall be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord.” Ah, you know that the cloud is God’s vehicle. God always appears upon the clouds, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament.
At the Ascension of Christ, “a cloud received Him,” lifting Him up and taking Him. The cloud, then, is a beautiful image of God’s vehicle. Notice that we said it is an image, because God does not need to walk from one place to another. Yet it is an image showing God moving as though borne upon the clouds. And now we see something astonishing: those who go to meet the Lord will themselves be placed upon the clouds. What does this mean? It means what Saint Cyril says: “Those who struggled beyond human strength will also be honored beyond what is human.”
Let me give you a simple image, an example. When a very distinguished person visits a country—my own country, let us say—the prime minister or the president may send his personal car to receive the honored guest. Or even if the visitor is not of such high rank, the ruler may sometimes send his personal vehicle simply because he wishes to honor him. When the Patriarch of Constantinople assumed the patriarchal throne, he arrived aboard the personal aircraft of the President of the United States.
I am mentioning actual persons. Think of it: he came aboard the president’s personal aircraft. What does that signify? Honor. Now, the vehicle of God is the cloud. But do not imagine that this cloud consists of droplets; I must make that clear as well. It is divine glory, like the cloud that formed the pillar over the Tabernacle of Witness. Was that made of droplets? No, it was divine glory, just as the uncreated light is divine glory: an uncreated cloud, uncreated divine glory. This means that what God Himself uses, He now grants His children to use, for in the Kingdom of God there will be participation in His uncreated light.
Whatever glory Christ possesses will also be shared by the citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. This, then, is the honor we receive, and it is immensely important. Let me dwell for a moment on the words “we shall be caught up,” which the Apostle Paul uses. Notice carefully which verb he chooses. He does not simply say, “we shall go,” or “we shall ascend,” or “we shall be carried away.” He says, “we shall be caught up.” It means precisely what the word itself suggests: a sudden snatching away, a forceful removal from the history of this world.
The sinfulness of this world can no longer be endured—or, better, the faithful can no longer remain in this old world. And so there is a catching up, a sudden and forceful removal, because we cannot wait any longer and cannot remain in this world as it is. It is a world that will be made new. A final line is drawn under the old world. And now, beloved, let us go a little further. The next paragraph is a passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes. It is, of course, rather long.
I would like to say only a little about it and not dwell on it too long. “Ecclesiastes already knew of this Second Coming of the Lord and of the end of the world.” The author of Ecclesiastes, Solomon, knew of this Second Coming of Christ the Lord and the end of the world. Knowing this, he wrote the following. What I am about to tell you comes from Ecclesiastes, from chapter eleven, verse nine, through the opening verses of chapter twelve. Saint Cyril selects certain passages. I shall read them and give their meaning immediately—more of a paraphrase, really, than a translation.
“Rejoice, young man, in your youth.” Young man, adolescent, enjoy your youth—not in a materialistic way, but spiritually. I am sorry that I cannot give you a full explanation of this passage; it is very beautiful, but I must move quickly. “Remove anger from your heart, put evil away from your flesh, and remember your Creator.” Yet the words “rejoice in your youth” are actually used ironically in the text: Yes, yes, my young man, eat and enjoy yourself, and in the end you will see that everything is vanity of vanities.
Everything is vanity. But I shall not go further into that now, because it would take us too far.
Now let us pay attention: “Before the days of evil come.” The phrase means “before,” or “prior to”: before the days of evil come. According to the interpretation given within the text, these are the toil and weariness of old age.
Before old age comes upon you—that is, take care not to leave everything until you have grown old—and before the sun is darkened. This also refers to the last days of the Antichrist, shortly before Christ’s Second Coming. So do not wait until after the darkening of the sun in order to be saved. Act before the sun is darkened, before the moon and stars are darkened, and before “those who look through the openings grow dim.”
Those who look through the openings—or the openings themselves—will grow dark. Within Ecclesiastes this image has another interpretation. Saint Cyril explains parenthetically that it signifies the power of sight: before a person’s eyes close and can no longer see the world around him. In other words, while you are alive, O man, repent. While you are alive, do not wait for these things to come, although come they surely will. “Before the silver cord is broken”—before, he says, the silver thread is severed. Saint Cyril then adds a parenthetical explanation; it is not part of the text of Ecclesiastes itself.
He says that this teaches us about the constellation of the stars, since their appearance is silvery. In other words, it means before the stars fall. “And the golden flower is shattered”—the flower of gold. In parentheses he explains that this signifies the sun, whose appearance is golden. A little further on he says that the antheris, a familiar plant, puts forth many ray-like petals all around it. It is a flower. I do not know exactly which flower is meant here, nor precisely what plant the ancient name antheris refers to.
Let us say, approximately, that it is what we call the sunflower, the familiar yellow plant that turns as the sun moves and is therefore called a sunflower. Its yellow petals resemble the rays of the sun. Let us suppose, then, that the antheris is this flower that resembles the sun. If it is not exactly that, it must be some flower like a daisy, something of that kind, whose petals make it look like the sun with its rays. “And they shall rise at the voice of the sparrow.” What does this mean? He will explain shortly. It refers to the Archangels who will cry aloud and sound the trumpet.
“They shall look down from on high, and terrors shall be in the way.” They will look from the heights, and there will be astonishing and fearful things along the way. What will they see? Saint Cyril asks, and he now draws from the Gospels: “Then they shall see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven, and every tribe shall mourn,” as the Prophet Zechariah also says in chapter twelve, verse twelve. Saint Cyril continues and asks, “And what happens when the Lord comes?” Ecclesiastes goes on: “And the almond tree shall blossom.”
“The locust shall grow heavy, and the caper shall be scattered.” What does this mean? The almond tree will blossom, the locust will grow heavy, and the caper will be scattered. This is the familiar caper that people eat as an appetizer and preserve as a pickle. Remarkably, it has retained the same name from antiquity. Isaiah also uses the word caper. Saint Cyril says, “As the interpreters have explained: the almond tree blossomed when winter had passed.”
When people see everything in the heavens collapsing—the lights of the sun and the moon—and when amazement seizes them, they will look up and be struck with awe. Then, he says, winter will have passed. We know that the almond tree is the first tree to blossom. It is the first tree after winter to announce the coming of spring. What, then, is the winter that will have passed? It is the old form of this world; it is history itself, which will have reached its end. Winter passes; winter is over. And after that winter, our bodies will remain and blossom anew.
It will blossom as a heavenly flower. Then we shall rise, and our bodies will be made new. “And the locust shall grow fat”—that is, the winged soul clothed once more with the body. The locust flies, so it is an image of the soul. But when it says that the soul “grows fat,” what does that mean? It means that the soul will receive its body again: the resurrection of the dead and the reunion of the soul with our renewed, incorruptible, and immortal bodies.
May the mind be turned toward this. “And the caper shall be scattered.” You know that the caper plant has thorns. Here in Larissa, you can see it beside houses, along pavements, and in channels; wherever there is stone, the caper plant will spring up. It is a remarkable plant. I assume you know it, with those very beautiful flowers. But the caper plant has thorns, and, it says, the caper shall be scattered. Saint Cyril interprets this as follows: “Thorny lawlessness shall be scattered.” Evil, which resembles thorns, will be scattered. This is a very beautiful interpretation given by Saint Cyril. Then, in the next paragraph, the twenty-first, he says: “Do you see how they all foretell the Second Coming (Parousia) of the Lord? Do you see how they foretell the Second Coming (Parousia) of the Lord?”
Do you see? Did you notice the voice of the little bird? You know the voice of a bird. The word “strouthion” literally means a sparrow. What voice have we heard? “The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a commanding call, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.” But why does it speak of a bird? Because the whole image used by Ecclesiastes is drawn from nature. He spoke of the almond tree, the caper plant, and the locust; and now the voice is represented by a bird calling out. And when do birds call? This is something we experience ourselves, and it is very beautiful. When we hear the local birds, the native birds here, begin to sing in a different way as the weather clears, we say, “Spring is coming.”
Their song changes. In winter they do not have the same voice they have in spring, when the birds are nesting, of course. An Archangel calls out and says to everyone: “Arise! Rise up, you dead, from the tombs, to meet the Lord.” And fearful is the descent of the Master. The descent of the Master is indeed fearful. What does “fearful” mean? It inspires fear. Why? David tells us. But where does David say this?
In Psalm 49. What does he say? “God shall come visibly.” Notice that word “visibly,” the adverb. How could the ancient rabbis have understood the words, “God shall come visibly”? Here both the first and the Second Coming of Christ are intimated. What follows refers to the Second Coming of Christ: “Our God shall come and shall not keep silence”—nothing will remain hidden. “A fire shall burn before Him,” and “around Him shall be a mighty tempest,” and so forth. What is this fearful tempest? It is righteous wrath. And what is this fire? We shall see a little later, when Daniel tells us.
In that wondrous vision of his, Daniel sees the Redeemer, the Son of God, as man: both at His first coming, at the Ascension, and at the Second Coming, when He receives the saints and comes to the Father. But since our time, my beloved, has come to an end, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Δεν φοβάμαι τον Ιησού Χριστόν, ο οποίος θα με καταδικάσει στην αιωνία κόλαση; Διότι ο Αντίχριστος το πολύ πολύ να με κάνει να μαρτυρήσω, αλλά δεν μπορεί όμως ο Αντίχριστος να με βάλει στην αιωνία κόλαση. Και αυτό, για να μην νομισθεί ότι το λέγω εγώ, λέει ο Κύριος: «Μη φοβηθείτε», λέει, «από των αποκτενόντων το σώμα. Εγώ θα σας πω ποιον να φοβηθείτε: τον δυνάμενον, εκείνον που έχει τη δύναμη να σας βάλει στην γέεννα του πυρός». Και εκείνος που έχει τη δύναμη να μας βάλει στην γέεννα του πυρός είναι μόνο ο Χριστός. Δεν πρέπει λοιπόν να θορυβούμεθα για το θέμα του Αντιχρίστου, αλλά πρέπει να φοβούμεθα πραγματικά μόνο τον Χριστό. Πότε, εάν και πόσο;
Υπάρχει μία μεταμόρφωση. Τι θα πει θάνατος; Περνάς από μία μορφή σε μια άλλη μορφή. Δεν υπάρχει θάνατος. Καταργούν τον θάνατον με τον τρόπον αυτόν. Αλλά ουσιαστικά παίζουμε με τις λέξεις και δεν κάνουμε τίποτε άλλο παρά με εκείνο που κάνουν στις εκθέσεις, όταν θέλουν να προσθέσουν κανένα αντλητικό μηχάνημα. Έχουν ένα κουβά νερό κάτω από το τραπέζι και έχουν ένα συντριβάνι, ας πούμε, ένα σωρό, βάζουν ένα μηχανάκι εκεί και τι κάνει τώρα το μηχανάκι; Πετάει το νερό σε πίδακα, αυτό πέφτει πάλι στην δεξαμενούλα, πάει πάλι στον κουβά και έτσι, με ένα κουβά νερό, κάνουν τις δουλειές. Δεν έχουν μια ροή από κάπου μακριά να παίρνουν ένα νερό που να κυλά. Λύνουν το πρόβλημα του θανάτου με τον τρόπον αυτόν. Το καταλάβατε;
Ότι μας λένε ότι ο Χριστιανισμός είναι μια θρησκεία όπως και οι άλλες. Και πώς μπορούμε να πούμε ότι διαφέρει; Οι άλλες θρησκείες είναι κατ' επινόησιν, είναι κατ' αυτονόησιν. Είναι ο άνθρωπος μιας θρησκείας για να ικανοποιεί, θα λέγαμε, κάποιες πνευματικές του εφέσεις ή να διευκολύνει κάποια προβλήματα από το πρόβλημα της υπάρξεώς του, του νοήματος της υπάρξεώς του και των φαινομένων της ζωής του. Τίποτα άλλο δεν είναι. Τίποτα άλλο. Και όλα αυτά μπορεί να τα βαπτίζει όπως θέλει, σαν μύθος ή σαν όπως θέλετε. Μήπως δεν υπάρχει στους φιλοσοφούντας, προπαντός στους φιλολογούντας, δεν υπάρχει η έκφραση της λύτρωσης; Γράφω, λέει, ένα ποίημα και λυτρώνομαι. Γράφω ένα ποίημα και λυτρώνομαι. Είναι σχετικά πάνω. Αυτά είναι μέσα στον κύκλο της ανθρωπίνης, θα λέγαμε, δραστηριότητας. Ποιος θα σε γλιτώσει από τον θάνατο;
Ένα αλλιώτικο κελάηδημα, όταν ανοίγει ο καιρός, και λέμε: έρχεται η άνοιξη. Στο χειμώνα δεν έχουν λαλιά εκείνη που την έχουν την άνοιξη, όταν φωλιάζουν τα πουλιά, εννοείται. Αρχάγγελος προσφωνεί και λέγει τοις πάσι. Προσφωνεί Αρχάγγελος και λέγει προς όλους: «Εγείρεσθε, σηκωθείτε, οι νεκροί από τα μνημεία, εις απάντησιν του Κυρίου», για να συναντήσετε τον Κύριο. Και φοβερά η κάθοδος του Δεσπότου. Και η κάθοδος του Δεσπότου είναι φοβερά. Και τι, φοβερά; Προκαλεί φόβον. Γιατί; Ο Δαβίδ κι εσύ; Γιατί λέγει ο Δαβίδ; Πού το λέγει αυτό;
