Summary

Drawing on Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, the lecture presents the Seven Maccabean Martyrs and the Three Holy Youths as Old Testament models of faithful resistance to the Antichrist. Unlike earlier persecutions based primarily on fear, the final persecution will combine coercion with deceptive miracles, but believers can recognize the true Christ because His return will be manifest from heaven. Daniel’s prophecy teaches the universal resurrection, eternal life for the righteous, and eternal condemnation for the wicked, rejecting the doctrine of universal restoration.

My beloved, we are studying Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, in his Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture, paragraph seventeen. You will remember that there we spoke of the blessed and happy person who, in those days, will reverently bear witness for Christ. Since, of course, we did not finish this paragraph, we shall continue without returning to that point, referring only

to a type of martyrdom found in the Old Testament.

The first type—or, if you prefer, we may speak of two types of martyrdom—is Antiochus IV Epiphanes, one of the successors of Alexander the Great. Under him, the Seven Maccabean Martyrs, their mother, and their teacher suffered martyrdom. Antiochus Epiphanes was a type of the Antichrist, and Daniel the Prophet foretold both the type and the prototype. But we have another type as well: one that Daniel himself experienced in his own days.

He described it in his prophetic book: the martyrdom of the Three Holy Youths under Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar is a type of the Antichrist. He was the one who destroyed the Temple of God, the first to lay a fearfully profane hand upon Solomon’s Temple. He seized all the silver and gold vessels of the Temple, destroyed the Temple itself, and carried both the people and its sacred vessels away to Babylon.

He demanded that the golden image be worshipped. It seems, however, that it was not an image of Nebuchadnezzar himself, although the passage may give that impression. The sacred text is somewhat unclear as to whether it was his image or an image of Marduk. It remains uncertain. It was probably Marduk, the patron deity of Babylon. Yet only three young men refused to obey his command. They were those wonderful friends of Daniel, the well-known Three Holy Youths. Notice that Daniel was probably absent, since he is not mentioned in this ordeal of the three young men who suffered martyrdom—or, rather, God did not permit him to suffer martyrdom. And so it was

the ordeal of the three young men who refused to worship Nebuchadnezzar’s image, the image of the Antichrist. We might say that they were those who refused to receive the mark of the Antichrist, and they remained standing. They were on a plain, an open field. At a signal given by musical instruments and so forth, that whole multitude—delegations from all the peoples ruled by the Babylonians—was to fall down and worship. This was done, of course, for reasons that were primarily political. Listen carefully: primarily political reasons. The Romans later did the same through the deification of their emperors, because they believed that this vast diversity of peoples could be united only

by religious unity. Take note: religious unity. What exactly does that mean? It means shared interests and common worship. This is why the emperor was deified, and if anyone refused to accept his deification, it was regarded and charged as sacrilege and high treason, punishable by death. This is why Christians suffered martyrdom: not because they refused to sacrifice to Zeus, Hermes, or Hera, but because they would neither worship nor offer sacrifice before the statue of the Augustus, the Emperor. As I told you, they did this for the sake of what we might call national unity—the unity of all those diverse peoples through a common worship. Do not forget that the common religion now being prepared to open the way for the Antichrist involves not only the political union of peoples. We speak, for example, of the United States of America, where there is naturally a certain unity because... because... But we also speak of united peoples, of the United Nations of Europe. I do not know what we shall call it tomorrow or what will follow. This movement is found not only in politics and economics, but also in religion. And Ecumenism serves this purpose.

In reality, Ecumenism is the religion that will bring people closer to the Antichrist. The Antichrist will find them already united, because Ecumenism, as I have said, will have prepared the religious ground. Therefore Ecumenism is not merely a heresy—although every heresy is unquestionably an antichristian condition—but something far greater than a heresy. Because Ecumenism is so widespread, we may not perceive it, yet it is doing its evil work. I can tell you that in America, apart, of course, from certain individuals, the Orthodox Church in America

has been corrupted by Ecumenism. It is a tragedy. There are, thank God, many individuals, as well as local movements and organizations, struggling against this Ecumenism, which has begun to settle upon the Orthodox Church in America—and no less upon Orthodoxy in Europe. I tell you these things, my beloved, so that you may know them and be exceedingly watchful. And yet how greatly Ecumenism is praised today as a solution! This solution is the Antichrist’s solution. I am not exaggerating—not in the least.

Am I saying something novel? I am not offering an idea of my own. These matters have been observed, spoken of, and written about; I am simply relating them to you. So, then, let us return to the martyrdom of the Three Holy Youths under Nebuchadnezzar. They remained standing. Everyone else fell down to worship, but they stood upright. This was noticed, and the punishment had already been proclaimed: whoever refused to worship would be cast into the furnace, heated seven times hotter than usual. Its flame, we are told, rose forty-nine cubits. You may say, ‘Goodness! Why not fifty?’

Forty-nine cubits. Do not forget: it is seven times seven. Seven times seven is forty-nine.

This expression shows that the furnace was heated to a terrifying degree; it does not mean that someone measured its flames with a tape and found them exactly forty-nine cubits high. The three young men were cast into it. The king had already made it clear: whoever refused to worship would be thrown in. For they had said, ‘O king, we will not worship the golden image. We believe only in our true God.’ Nebuchadnezzar replied, ‘Now I will cast you into the furnace, and we shall see who this God of yours is who can deliver you from my hands.’ The Three Holy Youths answered, ‘Listen, O king. If it is God’s will that we be burned, then we shall be burned, and we give thanks. But our God is able to deliver us from your hands.’

Then they were bound just as they were, wearing the garments and head coverings of that time. Their hands and feet were tied, and they were thrown into the furnace. What happened? The fire burned only their bonds. It did not burn any part of their clothing, nor was there even the smell of burning. Not a single hair of their heads was scorched, and neither were their garments. Meanwhile, Nebuchadnezzar looked into the furnace and saw four men there. Who was the fourth? Nebuchadnezzar himself confessed it. ‘This fourth man,’ he said—‘did we not cast in three? This fourth man’—what did he say about him? He said that his appearance was like the appearance of an angel.

Do you know who He was? He was the Angel of Great Counsel, the One who came to Moses and spoke on Sinai. He is God the Word (Logos); He is Jesus Christ before His Incarnation. And within the furnace, it says, He made it like refreshing dew, like the gentle blowing of a wonderfully cool breeze. When the youths were brought out, there was no smell upon them—not even the smell of burning. Nothing at all; not a single hair was scorched. Take note: this is also a type of the Holy Trinity. And take note again: it is also a type of the Resurrection. Christ said to the martyrs, ‘I assure you, not even one hair of your heads will be lost.’ What does this mean? When you rise again, even the last hair of your head will be restored to you. Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid.

And it is yet another type: a type of the Last Things (eschata), of the martyrdom of the last days. Then the prospective martyrs—those who may not fall into the hands of the Antichrist but are martyrs nonetheless, because they will say no and flee to the mountains—will ask, ‘Will He not feed us and protect us?’ Just as the Three Holy Youths were protected in the furnace from the flame of the evil one, so Christ Himself will protect the devout and faithful from the flame of the Antichrist. Do you want proof? He has promised it. It is written in the Apocalypse that, for as long as the Antichrist prevails, Heaven will nourish the Church. Thus, as I have told you, this is a type of the Antichrist

and of the prospective martyrs: the Three Holy Youths, Nebuchadnezzar—a type of the Last Things. But let us consider something else, my beloved. It says here that the martyrs of old—and I wish to make one more comment before leaving this passage—the martyrs of old had to struggle only against the instruments of the devil. In the last days, however, believers will have to struggle against the devil himself in the person of the Antichrist. Pay attention to this. Saint Cyril makes two points that are especially worthy of notice. In those days, when the martyrs bore witness before their persecutors,

their persecutors displayed no signs or miracles, but relied only on fear. Here Saint Cyril says: ‘But here, in the Last Things, there is an assault both of fear and of evil deception, so that, if possible, even the elect may be led astray.’ In the past there was only fear. But then, at the end, there will be two things: fear and deception. You will be brought before the Antichrist, and he will say, ‘If you do not worship, you will suffer this and that.’ That is fear. On the other hand, you will see the Antichrist working miracles, and you will say, ‘Could I be mistaken?’

‘Could things be different from what I thought?’ Thus there will also be deception. This second element, which did not exist under the ancient persecutors, is the terrifying feature of the Last Things. I told you this last time, and I said it again yesterday in our talk on the Acts of the Apostles: people will say, ‘But this is a remarkable man!’ Yet we need not go far to find the warning. Saint Cyril says: ‘Lest it enter the heart of anyone living at that time to ask, “What greater thing did Christ do?”’ In other words, lest someone living in those days think, ‘What greater thing did Christ do? What more did Christ accomplish? By what power, then, does this man perform these things?’

‘By what power does he do all these things? If God did not will it, would He have permitted it?’ Therefore, they will conclude, it must come from God. Behold the deception! Behold the deception! We shall examine this a little later, but I mention it now because there are many signs that the faithful must know. This is why we speak of these matters: so that we may know them. One fundamental sign is that Christ does not come again from the earth, but from Heaven. Never forget this. If at some point the Antichrist appears, he will be a person within history, acting in the course of historical events. The heavens will not blaze with light. He will simply be a person.

He is from the earth. He is not Christ. Christ Himself says, ‘They will tell you, “Christ is here,” or “Christ is there.” Do not believe them; do not accept it.’ How does Christ come? As He says, when lightning flashes, it fills the whole horizon. From east to west, the lightning fills the entire sky. So will be the Second Coming (Parousia) of the Son of Man. It will be manifest from Heaven. I shall say it once more: manifest from Heaven. Unless we see the Messiah coming from Heaven, we shall not believe.

Nothing—nothing at all. Even if the Antichrist makes mountains rise and fall and moves them about, we will never say that he is the Messiah. The Messiah comes from Heaven. We must never forget this. I think this is the strongest proof of all. We shall see it again a little further on; Saint Cyril says it as well. We must pay very close attention to this. Let us continue. Did Christ not say that even the elect would be deceived? Saint Cyril says the same here: the elect will be deceived. Who are the elect? The eminent ones. Will even spiritual people be deceived? Yes. Why? Because they will say, “But look at what is happening here!” People said the same thing in the days of Christ.

They said, “Has it ever been heard at any time in history that anyone opened the eyes of the blind—of someone blind from birth?” That argument was valid then. The same argument will not be valid in the days of the Antichrist. This is why we are warned beforehand. Let us continue. “The Apostle safeguards you and foretells: ‘And for this reason God sends them a strong delusion,’” and so forth. Why does the Apostle foretell it? Which Apostle? The Apostle Paul. Why does he foretell these things, together with what follows? To keep you safe. Some people become frightened when they hear them.

Some say that they have nightmares because, for example, Father Athanasios—or whichever speaker it may be—describes these things so vividly that they see them in their sleep as nightmares. My beloved, take heed. If we had the ability to describe them even more vividly, we would not neglect to do so. Our purpose would not be to frighten you, but to protect you beforehand. Sometimes we may describe something terrifyingly to a small child. I remember that once we went to my father’s island and out into the countryside. Below us was a cliff with no railing at all—a sheer drop into the sea—and there was real danger. There was a little chapel there, and my little... We ourselves were small children.

We had finished the first grade and might have gone and fallen over that cliff. I remember that they told us an enormous snake lived there and that we must not go near, because it would come out and... do whatever an enormous snake might do. There was no chance that we would go near it! So it is here, my beloved: the purpose is not to frighten us, but to keep us safe. I therefore ask you to remember this, because now and then it may be said that we speak in exaggerated terms. We say nothing exaggerated. We speak according to the language of the Word of God. “And for this reason,” says the Apostle Paul, “God sends them a strong delusion.” Saint Cyril then explains it in his own words. This is in 2 Thessalonians 2:11.

“For this reason,” he says, “God sends them a strong delusion.” Now pay attention here: “The word ‘sends’ means that He permits it to happen.” Saint Cyril adds this parenthetically: “sends” means “permits.” In this usage, “to allow” means “to permit.” God Himself does not send the delusion. Otherwise, we too might say that God is responsible because He sends a spirit of delusion upon these people. Which people? Those who will be deceived. No, God does not send a spirit of delusion; God permits the spirit of delusion to arise. “Not so that they may offer a defense, but so that they may be condemned.” Why? “Those who did not believe the truth”—that is, the true Christ—

“but took pleasure in unrighteousness”—that is, in the Antichrist. There it is!

Earthquakes, floods, rains, droughts, diseases—anything you please. All these things come to bring man to his senses, so that he may recover himself. But the final punishment is something God permits; He does not inflict it. Another inflicts it: the devil. But God permits it. Do you know what it is?

It is a punishment that condemns, whereas all the others are corrective. God desires to help you come to your senses. Well, all that is good. What, then, is not good? Delusion. He gives you a strong delusion. Listen to another example from the Old Testament. I had not prepared this one; it had not occurred to me. I have only just thought of it, and I do not remember all the details. There was a prophet named Micaiah—not the well-known Prophet Micah, but another.

Thank you. Once, when the kings of the Northern and Southern Kingdoms formed an alliance—the Northern Kingdom was utterly impious, the most impious of all—Ahab was king at that time.

He formed an alliance with the Southern Kingdom, whose king was devout, so that they might attack an enemy to the east. The prophet came and said, “You must not go to war, because you will be defeated.” Then the false prophets came and said, “You will win a glorious victory. Go to war!” Micaiah continued to insist that they must not fight. Then Ahab said to him, “Enough! You are always the bearer of bad news. Enough—say something favorable for once!” Micaiah replied, “How can I say something favorable when God has placed no favorable word in my mouth? How could I tell you such a thing?”

To help them understand, he told what we might call a philosophical or theological story—a kind of parable. Once, he said, God wished to punish a certain king, and the angels and the demons gathered together, and God asked, “How shall I destroy this king?” As I told you, this is a story written in the Old Testament. One suggested one thing, and another suggested something else. Then a demon appeared and said to God, “Lord, shall I tell You how to destroy him? Send a spirit of delusion.” In other words, the prophets—the false prophets—are telling you, my king, “Go to war,” and you listen to them and receive a spirit of delusion. This delusion brings condemnation. Ahab was killed in that battle. The Hebrews lost the war, and the king of the Southern Kingdom barely escaped with his life by fleeing. What, then, is the spirit of delusion?

It is a terrible thing—terrible, terrible! At that time, those who will not accept the truth, who is Christ, but instead accept the lie, who is the Antichrist, will be given a spirit of delusion by God—that is, God will permit it to come upon them. And worst of all, they will no longer be able even to acknowledge the truth or to repent.

To repent—that is the dreadful thing. For, as I say once again, this is a punishment that condemns, not one that corrects and instructs. The text says it plainly: “Not so that they may offer a defense, but so that they may be condemned.” “God permits these things,” God will allow them, “both in the persecutions that arise from time to time and in that final persecution—not because He is unable to prevent them, but because through patient endurance He customarily crowns His own contestants.” Pay attention to something here.

In the past, he says, there was martyrdom. God could very easily have restrained the persecutors so that His people would not have had to endure martyrdom. Yet He did not do so. God permitted their martyrdom. Why? “Because through patient endurance He customarily crowns His own contestants.” He crowns His own contestants through their patient endurance. We can therefore see, my beloved, that patient endurance—patient endurance—is the decisive element in martyrdom. The martyrs of those final days must likewise show great patient endurance in order to receive the crown of eternal glory.

“Just as He did,” Saint Cyril says, “with His own prophets and apostles.” God did the same with the prophets and the apostles. In the same way, they too faced danger and suffered countless evils, afflictions, and martyrdoms, “so that, after laboring for a short time, they too might inherit the eternal Kingdom of Heaven, as Daniel says,” and so forth. Thus they suffer for a little while—a little, very little time—so that they may inherit eternal life. What does Daniel say? “And at that time your people shall be saved.”

“Everyone who is written in the Book.” Daniel, chapter 12, verse 1. “And at that time,” he says, “your people shall be saved.” And who are your people? Everyone—the whole people—whose name is written in the Book. Saint Cyril explains that this means “the Book of Life.” Thus, those whose names are written in the Book of Life will be saved. Of course, this does not mean that there is some fixed fortune—forgive me, forgive me, forgive me—some predetermined fate, as though I were born with my name written in the Book while someone else was born without his name there. I am written in it in the sense that

I live in the way God desires. My name can be erased; or, if it had been erased, it can be written or written again. My beloved, I remind you of the Forty Holy Martyrs. You see, above them were forty crowns and forty angels. One of the guards beheld that wondrous vision: one angel began to rise higher, as though he were about to depart in sorrow, because one of the Forty Holy Martyrs had lost heart and left the water.

He was lost. The crown had first descended, but he lost it. Then the guard, who was an idolater, leapt into the water, crying, “I am a Christian!”

He received that crown, and the thirty-nine became forty once again. This shows you that nothing is irrevocably predetermined. God alone knows who will be saved, because God is outside time. Apart from that, my name can be written and erased. I ask you: was Judas written in the Book of Life? Without question. Yet his name was erased. Therefore, my beloved, let us be very watchful. And what does Daniel say next? “And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall arise, some to eternal life, and some to reproach and everlasting shame.” This passage is very well known, so I shall not dwell on it now.

We shall consider it a little further on when we speak about the Resurrection of the Dead—or, if you prefer, we have already spoken about it. It refers to the Resurrection of the Dead. Notice the striking way it is expressed, even though it was written in the Old Testament. The doctrine of the Resurrection of the Dead is present in the Old Testament, and it is written there vividly and with the utmost clarity. This is how Daniel records what was revealed to him, and it is exceedingly important. It is Daniel, chapter 12, verses 2–3. Let me explain: “And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth”—“those who sleep.” It does not say “the dead.”

“Those who sleep.” It means “I sleep.” That is why we also speak of “the departed,” literally, “the one who has fallen asleep.” We call the dead person one who has fallen asleep. That is why we say “cemetery,” a sleeping place, rather than “a place of the dead.” For whoever sleeps will awaken. And so here we have the teaching of the Resurrection of the Dead. “And many,” he says. When he says “many,” he does not mean “some, but not all.” Here the expression “many” means “all,” because everyone will rise, both the godly and the ungodly—everyone. Indeed, what follows proves that “many” means “all.” Let me give you a parallel use of the word “many.” The phrase “for many”...

“My body, which is given for many,” as Christ says. Who, then, are these “many”? Is it not given for all?

They sleep in the dust of the earth. “They shall arise.” To arise means to awaken: this is the Resurrection of the Dead. “Some of them.” Who are these? The godly. For if only the godly were to rise and not the ungodly, then “many” would not mean “all.” But it does mean all; this is plainly shown. “Some to eternal life.”

“And some to reproach and everlasting shame.” Some will rise to eternal life, and others to everlasting shame and reproach, which is Hell. Notice that both are eternal. For in our time that false teaching of Origen about the restoration of all things is being revived—the claim that God cannot allow Hell to remain eternal. This is not true, because the word “eternal” is used both of life and of reproach. And, if you wish, the very same wording appears in Matthew, chapter 25. What does it say there?

“And these shall go away”—some into eternal life and others into eternal punishment. The word and meaning of “eternal” in reference to Hell is the same, because it occurs in the same verse and is the very same word. It has exactly the same force as it does in “eternal life.” Therefore, if “eternal” does not truly mean eternal but has a limit, then eternal life must also have a limit. We must pay very close attention to this, because some people think, “Oh, it is all right. God is good and kind; He will forgive us.” There is even this heresy of love, this sentimental distortion of love: “God is love,” they say, “so He will forgive us all.” Sometimes we even joke about it: “Well, if you are saved, you can pull me in with you. God is love.” Let us not joke about matters that admit of no joking, nor play with things that are not to be played with.

“Those who understand,” those who will be saved, “shall shine like the brightness of the firmament.” Just as the sun shines in the firmament above, so they too shall shine. Christ said, “Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.” And those who have led many to righteousness will shine like the stars. Will many be saved? How many? They asked the Lord, “How many?” He answered, “Strive to enter.” He gave neither a number nor a percentage. “Like the stars forever”—like the stars unto the ages and beyond, that is, unto the ages of ages. Here, my beloved, Saint Cyril concludes his treatment of the Antichrist.

He concludes with an exhortation, one that we also offer to you in love. It is the final paragraph on this subject, though not the end of the Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture, because that lecture continues with the Second Coming of Christ. So many of us are gathered here tonight—Glory to God—because you came to hear about the Antichrist. But many more of you ought to come and hear about the Second Coming of Christ. For that is the heart of the matter; that is what concerns us. The Antichrist himself does not concern us nearly as much. What we must say is, “Christ is coming.” That is what matters to us. And now Saint Cyril says: “Therefore, safeguard yourself, O man.”

O man, safeguard yourself through everything I have told you and explained to you. You have the signs of the Antichrist—all the signs of the Antichrist. Are not all the things we have discussed up to now his signs? And the most important sign is this: the Antichrist comes from the earth. How does John the Evangelist tell us this? He saw the Beast rising from the sea, and the other Beast, the false prophet, rising from the land—in either case, from the earth. Christ comes from heaven. How will He come? In the same way that He departed. We shall speak about this, God willing, next time, as we continue the catechetical lecture. He will come in the manner in which He departed. And how did He depart? He was taken up in the Ascension. At that time there were many angels.

The angels were there, but the disciples did not see them, because their attention would have been drawn away from Christ and toward the angels. But when He comes again, all the angels who accompany Him will be visible. He Himself said that all the angels would be with Him. “And do not keep these things in mind only for yourself,” Saint Cyril says; do not remember them only for your own sake, “but share them freely with everyone.” Pass all these things on abundantly to others. “If you have a child according to the flesh,” a child whom you have begotten, “instruct him in these things now.” Tell them to your child. “And if through catechesis you have begotten someone,” if through catechesis you have become the spiritual father of someone, “safeguard that person beforehand as well.” Tell that person too!

“So that he may not accept the false one as the true one”—so that he may not accept the false Messiah as the true Messiah. “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work,” as the Apostle Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2:7. For the mystery of the Antichrist, the mystery of lawlessness—lawlessness and Antichrist are synonymous—is already at work. Since when? Since the time of the Apostle Paul. There are the many antichrists, the various conditions that serve as forerunners of the Antichrist. “The wars of the nations fill me with fear,” says Saint Cyril; I see the wars among the nations. “The schisms of the Churches fill me with fear”; I see the divisions among the Churches. Today we would speak of the common convergence of the heresies:

Ecumenism. “The hatred among brethren also fills me with fear”—the fact that brothers have no love for one another. This too is a sign. Christ said that the love of many would be absent, that it would grow cold: “The love of many will grow cold.” And Saint Cyril says, “Let these things be spoken of, but may it not come to pass that they are fulfilled in our time.” We may speak of these things, but God forbid that they should happen in our own day. “Nevertheless, let us safeguard ourselves.” We must be prepared; we must know these things. “And this is what is to be said concerning the Antichrist.” This is all that we had to say about the Antichrist. Here our discussion of the Antichrist comes to an end. Since we have a little time left, and since I had included this in my plan...

I wanted, my beloved, to gather everything we have said into a summary. This summary is given to us beautifully by Saint John of Damascus in his book An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith. It contains a chapter concerning the Antichrist. Listen, then, to what he says in that chapter.

I shall read the translation to you directly. It is a summary. We must know that the Antichrist is destined to come. Certainly, everyone who does not confess that the Son of God has come in the flesh, that He is perfect God, and that He became perfect man while remaining God, is an antichrist. An antichrist. As I have told you, this is the definition given by Saint John the Evangelist. Who is an antichrist? Anyone who denies either the divine nature or the human nature of Christ. Those who say, “Christ is not God,” are antichrists. Yet in a particular and unique sense, the one who comes at the end of our age is called the Antichrist. Therefore, he is a person, because the pan-heresy is not a person; the Antichrist is

a person. Therefore, the Gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations, as the Lord said, and then he will come to rebuke and punish the ungodly Jews. Here the translation says “to test,” but that rendering is incorrect, because the text says, “for the rebuking of those opposed to God.” The translation has “to test,” which is not right. It means to rebuke and punish the ungodly Jews. For the Lord said to them, “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.” You will receive him, take him in, and accept him. And the Apostle said:

“Because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved”—and Christ is the Truth—“for this reason God will send them a strong delusion, so that they may believe the lie, that all may be judged who did not believe the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness.” Thus, although the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God and God, the Jews did not receive Him. Instead, they will receive the deceiver who calls himself God, for the angel, teaching Daniel that he would call himself God, says: “He shall have no regard for the gods of his fathers.” Daniel 11:37. And the Apostle says:

“Let no one deceive you in any way”—in no manner whatsoever. Take heed: let no one deceive you—“for that Day will not come unless the apostasy comes first,” the falling away from God—and in our own days we are experiencing apostasy intensely—“and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above everything that is called God or an object of worship, so that he sits in the temple of God,” sitting in that temple of God, “showing himself that he is God.” The commentator does not explain or translate these scriptural passages here. Saint John of Damascus says that “the temple of God” does not mean one of our churches, but the ancient Jewish temple, because he will not come to us but to the Jews

in the name of Christ, yet against Christ and against all that belongs to Christ; and all who belong to Christ will stand against him. That is why he is called Antichrist. Therefore, the Gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whose coming is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders”—false miracles—“and with every deception of unrighteousness among those who are perishing. The Lord will slay him”—the Lord will destroy him—“with the breath of His mouth,” with His word, “and bring him to nothing by the manifestation of His Second Coming.” He will abolish him and render him powerless by His Second Coming. Consequently, the coming of Christ and the coming of the Antichrist are directly joined together. Directly joined! No millennial interval comes between them.

The devil himself, of course, does not become man in a manner corresponding to the Incarnation of the Lord—never anything of the sort. Rather, a man is born of fornication and receives the full working of Satan. Because God foreknows the perverse choice that this man will make, He permits the devil to dwell within him. The devil, then, does not become incarnate; rather, the devil enters into a man. He is born of fornication, as we have said, and is raised in secret. This has set me thinking about something—something people say... It would be better not to tell you; I would only create a problem for you. As we have said, he is raised in secret, and then he rises up, revolts, and suddenly becomes king.

The translation omits the word “suddenly,” but it is present in the original text. He suddenly becomes king through a revolution. He will overthrow something; he will overthrow certain governments, and he himself will reign. At the beginning of his reign—or rather, of his tyrannical rule—he will pretend to be holy. But once he has gained control, he will persecute the Church of God and reveal all his wickedness. He will come “with lying signs and wonders,” things that are illusory and not real. And he will deceive those whose understanding has “an unstable”—pay attention to this—“and unfounded basis.” We have no foundation; we know nothing, my beloved. And he will lead such people away from the living God, with the result that, if possible, even the elect will be led astray.

And Enoch and Elijah the Tishbite will be sent. Pay attention! Enoch and Elijah the Tishbite—not John the Evangelist.

There is a movement here in Larissa whose followers insist that it will be Saint John the Evangelist. That is wrong. They also claim that Saint John the Evangelist is hidden somewhere. But once delusion takes hold, one delusion is added to another. Listen, then, to a letter published in the newspaper Eleftheria. It is signed: “With love after Christ, the Researchers of the Prophecies.”

“Central Greece, Thessaly.” That is the signature. Listen: “We also clarify that, just as Christ had Saint John the Baptist as His forerunner, and Elijah comes before the Second Coming, and just as the Antichrist has a forerunner, so too the fearsome Saint John has his own forerunner and herald.” In other words, they mean that the forerunner himself has a forerunner. They mean that Saint John the Evangelist will come, but his forerunner also has a forerunner. Do you understand? “He too has his forerunner and herald, who is”—listen to this, the forerunner of the forerunner—“a Greek Orthodox Christian.”

“According to testimony, he is in Thessaly, awaiting his appointed hour for public preaching, with the Lord working alongside him.” There is the delusion. Do you understand? I have read it to you; I am adding nothing. It was published, and you were the ones who gave me the clipping. So, my dear ones, do you understand? Be careful; many such things are circulating. I continue. Enoch and Elijah the Tishbite “will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children”—that is, they will turn the synagogue toward our Lord Jesus Christ and toward the preaching of the Apostles—and they will be slain by him. And the Lord will come from heaven in the same manner

in which the Holy Apostles saw Him go into heaven: as perfect God and perfect man, with glory and power. For in the Gospel according to Matthew He said, “When the Son of Man comes.” He does not say “the Son of God.” He will come as man—that is, in His human nature, the nature that was raised in the Resurrection and taken up in the Ascension. In that nature He will come to judge the world, and He will destroy the man of sin, the son of perdition, with the breath of His mouth. “The breath of His mouth” means that He will do it with the greatest ease. We use a similar expression ourselves: “I will just blow on you, and you will fall down.” That is what it means: with the greatest ease. And now, the conclusion of Saint John of Damascus. No one

should expect the Lord to come from the earth—he regards this as a very important sign—but from heaven, as He Himself assured us. Here, my dear ones, this subject comes to a close. But allow me to say one more thing in the few minutes remaining—just three or four minutes. Two weeks ago, I spoke to you about Solomon’s Temple, which the Jews wish to build, and so forth. I was very pleased to see the subject of that American publication, in The New York Times, discussed in the magazine Stavros—the well-known little magazine; you know it, and it is a very good one.

Most importantly, I was pleased for the first time. The magazine takes the article and comments on it, though it does not reproduce the entire text, only the main points. It includes the principal statement I read to you: that the Jews must seek positive ways to express their faith in the coming of the Messiah and in the rebuilding—or, more precisely, the reconstruction—of the Temple. It even gives the English text in parentheses, and a little later repeats another part of the English text, because this is a very interesting case. And this is a sign: when the Temple is built, the Antichrist will be at the door. And concerning what I told you in confidence—that he is being raised in secret—let me tell you what I meant, so that I may also relieve you of a concern:

They already have him prepared; the Jews will build the Temple and present him. That is the point. I came to this understanding while reading Saint John of Damascus. But I am not asserting anything; I cannot say anything more, because Saint John of Damascus seems to imply something along these lines. Could I be mistaken? I do not know. A little further down, the magazine says the following. After commenting on this very well, it says that there will be a world government. It also mentions that moves have been made even in our own Parliament, and that people are working toward, desiring, and longing for a world government. But what especially struck me was this: the commentator asks whether the Roman Catholic Church has already been conquered

by the Antichrist—by the Jews. A rabbi went with the Pope to the synagogue, and there, it says, the Jews sang him a song, a hymn about the coming of the Messiah, saying that they await the Messiah. You are a Christian; you believe that the Messiah has already come. How can you sit there listening to such a song and not leave? Yet, for reasons of diplomatic courtesy, he does not leave. The Church has been conquered, the commentator says. The hymns of Great Lent have also disappeared from the Roman Catholic Church. As for the Protestants, they are easily disregarded by the Jews. What remains? The Orthodox Church. And he asks whether the struggle now being waged in Greece against the Church

is not really about property or anything of that sort. Could it be precisely because the Church is an obstacle to the plans of the Zionists? This remains to be seen. For, he says, we shall see. My dear ones, that is all.

Πρωτοτυπώ; Δεν λέω κάτι δικό μου. Είναι πράγματα που έχουν παρατηρηθεί, έχουν ειπωθεί, έχουν γραφτεί και εγώ απλώς σας τα λέγω. Έτσι... Έτσι ξαναγυρίζω. Εκείνο το μαρτύριο των τριών παίδων επί Ναβουχοδονόσορος, που έμειναν όρθιοι. Όλοι πέσαν να προσκυνήσουν, αυτοί όρθιοι. Και τότε παρετηρήθη, αφού εξηγγέλθη η τιμωρία: όποιος, λέγει, δεν θα προσκυνήσει, θα πεταχτεί μέσα στο καμίνι, που θα είναι επταπλασίως καμμένο, πυρωμένο. Και η φλόγα του, λέει, έβγαινε σαράντα εννέα πήχεις. Πω πω, θα μου πείτε, όχι πενήντα;

Ευαγγελισμός, Ανάσταση, Ανάσταση, Αποκάλυψη, και σεισμούς και καταποντισμούς και βροχές και ανομβρίες και αρρώστιες, ό,τι θέλετε. Όλα αυτά έρχονται να συνετίσουν τον άνθρωπο, να συνέλθει. Αλλά η εσχάτη τιμωρία, την οποία επιτρέπει, δεν τη δίδει. Άλλος τη δίδει, ο διάβολος τη δίδει. Αλλά ο Θεός την επιτρέπει. Ξέρετε ποια είναι;

Για να το καταλάβουν, είπε έναν μύθον, ας πούμε, φιλοσοφικό μύθο ή θεολογικό μύθο, δηλαδή μια παραβολή, ένα κάτι. Κάποτε, λέει, ο Θεός ήθελε να τιμωρήσει κάποιον βασιλιά και μαζεύτηκαν, λέγει, οι άγγελοι κλπ. και οι δαίμονες, και ρωτάει ο Θεός: «Πώς να καταστρέψω αυτόν τον βασιλιά;» Σας είπα, ιστορία είναι, γραμμένη στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Ένας έλεγε αυτό, άλλος έλεγε εκείνο. Τότε εμφανίζεται ένας δαίμων και λέγει στον Θεό: «Να σου πω, Κύριε, εγώ πώς να καταστρέψεις αυτόν. Στείλε πνεύμα πλάνης». Δηλαδή, οι προφήτες, οι ψευδοπροφήτες, που σου λένε, βασιλιά μου, ότι «πήγαινε να πολεμήσεις», και εσύ τους ακούς και δέχεσαι πνεύμα πλάνης. Είναι δε καταδικαστικόν. Στη μάχη αυτή σκοτώθηκε ο Αχάβ. Έχασαν οι Εβραίοι τον πόλεμο. Ο δε βασιλέας του Νοτίου Βασιλείου μόλις και πρόλαβε και σώθηκε δια της φυγής. Τι είναι, λοιπόν, το πνεύμα της πλάνης;

«Το σώμα μου που δίδεται υπέρ πολλών», που λέει ο Χριστός. Δηλαδή, ποιοι είναι αυτοί οι πολλοί; Δεν είναι για όλους;

«Και ούτοι εις ονειδισμόν και εις αισχύνην αιώνιον». Οι μεν σε ζωή αιώνιον, οι δε σε ντροπή και ονειδισμό αιώνιο, που είναι η κόλαση. Προσέξτε: και το ένα αιώνιον και το άλλο αιώνιον. Γιατί στην εποχή μας επαναφέρεται πάλι εκείνη η κακοδοξία του Ωριγένους περί αποκαταστάσεως των πάντων, ότι ο Θεός δεν μπορεί να διατηρήσει την κόλαση αιώνια. Δεν είναι αληθές, διότι η λέξη «αιώνιος» είναι και δια την ζωή και δια τον ονειδισμό. Και, αν το θέλετε, η ίδια διατύπωση στο κατά Ματθαίον, 25 κεφάλαιο. Τι λέγει εκεί;
