Summary

Saint Cyril teaches that even unwilling and sinful people, as Caiaphas did, may help fulfill prophecies revealed by the Holy Spirit. The power to withstand deception and martyrdom comes not from confidence in faith alone but from an abiding love of Christ expressed through communion with Him in the Divine Eucharist. Both those who prudently flee and those strengthened to remain may be saved, because God does not permit trials beyond the grace and strength He provides.

We are still, of course, with Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, in his Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture, paragraph 15, which we have not yet exhausted. Last time we examined what he says about the Temple, and especially how, even unwillingly—yes, unwillingly—each person observes, carries out, and brings a prophecy to fulfillment. Caiaphas, for example, what did he say? “It is expedient,” he says, “for one man to die for the people, so that the whole nation should not perish.” And the Evangelist John says that he spoke this, even though he...

He was a sinful man, even a criminal man, when he said it; but because he held the office of high priest, he prophesied by virtue of that office. The Evangelist John says this plainly: he did not say it on his own authority, but because he was high priest that year, he therefore prophesied. So do not be surprised: people may work toward the fulfillment of a prophecy without intending to do so. I therefore suspect that everything now being set in motion in our own time—including the matter of the Temple—is being driven, of course, by other motives; yet all these people have already entered the channel of God’s providence.

They are bringing to fulfillment what the Holy Spirit revealed many centuries ago. Continuing our discussion of the Antichrist, we saw that, after the matter of the Temple, Saint Cyril says: “At first he will feign philanthropy, but afterward he will reveal his harshness, especially toward the saints of God.” We must pay attention to this, beloved: at first he will display philanthropic sentiments. When we speak of philanthropy, we might explain it as follows. I will, of course, use a modern term to express what the older term means...

We call it philanthropy. It is the attempt to impose by law—that is, by enacting social legislation—a system intended to establish equality and eliminate poverty. You know what such systems are called, do you not? It means creating a social order in which there are neither rich nor poor, everyone is happy, and everyone has plenty to eat and drink. In ancient terms, we would call this philanthropy. Therefore, when Saint Cyril says here that the Antichrist will display philanthropic sentiments, do not imagine that he simply...

That someone will go and knock on his door, saying, “Please, could you find me some little government position somewhere?” That is not what this means. Rather, he will introduce laws that appear beneficial to the world. And note that he will be ruler of the whole world. In other words, he will govern the entire world by the method I have explained to you. He will not wage war to conquer the nations; he will not waste his time doing that. The nations themselves will ask him to establish a worldwide federation. It will be like the United States of America: all are under one administration and one president, even though each state also has its own government, governor, and so forth.

Thus, the Antichrist will be one person governing the entire globe. Philanthropy, therefore, cannot be understood as we understand it today, or as it was understood in Saint Cyril’s time. It will mean the imposition of laws presented as beneficial to the world. Do you realize how attractive that will be? Someone will step onto a balcony and proclaim, “Ladies and gentlemen, I will give you bread. You will all eat equally. No one will go hungry.” Tell me, who would reject a man who promises to provide for the people? The deception will be great, and the trap will be great.

This is what Saint Cyril will tell us a little further on: the Holy Spirit told you these things so that you would not be led astray or deceived by them. Take care. Do not look merely at the seemingly beneficial things he does; try, if you can, to discern who this person truly is. For when this person usurps titles of divinity—titles belonging to God—I want nothing that he may give me. When someone set over me says, “I am God; what would you like me to give you?” my answer is, “Keep it all for yourself and leave me alone.” I cannot be deceived by the food he gives me, because I will look at who he is and recognize the kind of person who could usurp such a title.

Please, I will say five words, and you must understand fifty. “Feigning philanthropy,” Saint Cyril says, “but afterward revealing his harshness.” Later, then, his true identity will appear. The sheepskin, so to speak, will fall away. The mask will fall. Then people will see who this man truly was—the man who appeared philanthropic, filled with benevolent concern and a sense of social justice. His harshness will be directed especially toward the saints of God—yes, especially toward the saints of God—that is, toward Christians. “Saints” is a general designation for Christians.

For the Christian people. In other words, he will turn against Christians above all and in every way. Why? Because they will disrupt his plans by exposing him. It will not be only the two prophets, the forerunners of the Second Coming of Christ, who will reveal the Antichrist. It will also be every person who possesses nepsis, as the Fathers of our Church say. Every person with a watchful heart—a heart being sanctified and purified, which is not swept away by the things of this world—will be able, even before the prophets appear, to discern the true identity of the Antichrist.

Such a person will spiritually strip away the sheepskin, so to speak, and see what face lies beneath it—who is hiding beneath that grotesque mask. Only the saints, therefore, will see him for what he is. Because they will expose him, he will turn against them; and he will also hate them simply because they believe in the true Christ. Driven by pride alone, beloved, he will turn against them.

Naturally. Naturally, because Saint Cyril, as he says this, supports his teaching with authoritative testimony: “I was beholding,” that is, I was watching, “and that horn...” Do you remember the vision from Daniel which I described and read to you?

“That horn made war against the saints.” This is written in Daniel, chapter 7, verse 21. “I was watching,” he says, “and the horn”—the eleventh horn, which had uprooted three and had established its power over the seven. Do you remember? This horn, the Antichrist who will reign, made war against the saints, against the Christians. How are we to understand this war? With guns and tanks? No. It means a savage and terrible persecution, as we shall see a little further on. And again, in another place, it says: “There shall be a time...”

Here again the Prophet Daniel says, in chapter 12, verse 1: “There shall be a time”—a time will come—“of tribulation, such tribulation as has never occurred since a nation first came into being upon the earth, until that time.” There will be tribulation upon the earth, he says, so great that nothing like it has occurred since nations first began to be formed upon the face of the earth. I would like to remind you of the prophetic harmony here: Christ also said that there would be tribulation such as had never occurred before. Daniel says it, and Christ says it as well.

The testimony is firmly established. When we say “tribulation,” what do we mean? Do we mean that I go into my house and am inconsolable because of some situation? In everyday language, by an extension of meaning, that is indeed what we mean by sorrow. “What is wrong?” “Ah, anxiety and sorrow.” In other words, I am distressed, troubled, bitter, or melancholy; perhaps someone close to me has died, and I am grieving. You may hear the word used to mean mourning. But the Greek word for tribulation comes from a verb meaning “to press” or “to crush.” Do we not speak of “the pressing of olives”? That means taking the olives to the mill, grinding them, and pressing them.

We crush them so that the olive oil comes out. Therefore, beloved, “tribulation” here means a terrible and unprecedented oppression, unlike anything that has occurred even under the worst systems by which a people has been governed. There have certainly been terrible rulers among the nations throughout history—truly terrible rulers. But this will be something never seen before. Daniel says it, and Christ says it. It is dreadful. “Terrible is the Beast, a great dragon, unconquerable by human beings, ready to devour.”

Those days will be so terrible because the Beast—the Antichrist, called a Beast in relation to the vision seen by Daniel and by the Evangelist John in the Apocalypse—will be dreadful. “Terrible is the Beast,” Saint Cyril says, “a great dragon.” A dragon is a serpent. Here we mean an enormous serpent, such as we depict in the icon of Saint George. He is “a great dragon,” unconquerable by human beings. No one will be able to defeat or overcome him. He will be “ready to devour,” ready to swallow up and trample everything underfoot.

When Jacob was dying, he spoke a prophecy concerning his son Dan. It referred, of course, to historical circumstances: Dan would live by robbery—that is, Dan’s descendants would live by plundering others. A fine occupation indeed! These people would live in a region where they would either avoid cultivating the land or simply do nothing else. Merchants, however, passed through that area, because in those days the trade route from the East—from Persia, Mesopotamia, and the surrounding regions—to Egypt ran through it. It was a thoroughfare, and there they robbed the merchants.

Naturally, they lived on the goods they stole. This prophecy certainly has, first of all, a historical dimension, but it also has an eschatological dimension. It says that Dan will strike the horse and its rider, and the rider will then fall from the horse. Notice an important detail here: the rider will be unable to find help from any human being, but only from God. Indeed, Christians will be able to find help only from God. There will be no human being capable of helping them. The Beast will be humanly unconquerable.

“Although we have many more things to say from Holy Scripture, for the sake of proportion we shall be content with these for now.” We would have many things to say from the Scriptures, Saint Cyril tells us, but to keep his discourse within due measure he stops here, lest he speak at excessive length about this subject. We now proceed to paragraph 16: “Therefore, knowing the greatness of the adversary, the Lord grants a concession to the devout, saying, ‘Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.’ But if anyone knows himself to be truly steadfast, so that he can wrestle against Satan, let him stand firm.”

“For I do not despair of the strength of the Church,” he says, and then: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” and the rest. “Let the fearful secure themselves, but let the courageous stand firm.” Pay attention here, for Saint Cyril now turns to the subject of the faithful. How will the faithful face the reign of the Antichrist? Knowing the greatness of the adversary and who that adversary is, the Lord, he says, granted a concession. Here “concession” means permission: He permitted the devout, the faithful, to take refuge in the mountains. Let us flee to the mountains!

Here again I must remind you of something very common in prophecy. When a prophet—in this case, Christ Himself—speaks of a future event, one event is near and the other is far off. They run parallel, and the nearer event is a type of the more distant one. If you ask why this happens, the explanation is very simple. First of all, it serves two purposes. Here it refers both to the destruction of Jerusalem and to the end of the world. Two things are contained in one prophecy—two birds with one stone. Secondly:

Christ said, “This generation will not pass away until all the things I have told you come to pass.” They had to be assured that the second phase of the prophecy was true by seeing the first phase fulfilled. This is the more important point. So when the Lord spoke about the destruction of Jerusalem, it took place one generation later, in AD 70. The people who had heard His words were still alive. Therefore they said, “What Christ said is true; He is a true prophet.” Consequently, the other half of what Christ said in the same prophecy—its further and ultimate fulfillment—is also true.

Listen to how Christ put it: “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by foreign armies, do not remain in the city; flee to the mountains. And then the sun will grow dark, and the moon,” and so forth. “And then, and then.” Here we have two prophecies in a single form. The first part has taken place: the destruction and capture of Jerusalem. The second part has not yet taken place. Here is another example. The Prophet Joel gave the prophecy used by the Apostle Peter: “In the last days... I will pour out My Spirit.” Which last days are these? In relation to Christ’s first coming, they refer to Pentecost. Yet immediately afterward he says, “And then the sun will grow dark, and the moon.” What does that refer to? It is an event of the Last Things (eschata), but those connected with the Second Coming of Christ. Whenever Christ comes, there are also last things: the first last things, and then the second and final Last Things. “Last things” simply means the things that come at the end. So you can see that a historical event is placed here in a way that may have seemed puzzling, but I have explained its meaning to you. Thank you.

“Let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.” This refers to the capture of Jerusalem, but also to the final overthrow of the whole world. When you see these things happening—the things of the Antichrist—do not remain where you are; flee to the mountains, because otherwise you will be in danger. By “in danger,” I mean that you may become afraid or find yourself too weak, and so worship the Antichrist. If you ask, “What will I eat in the mountains, in the wilderness?” the answer is in the Apocalypse. It says that God will nourish the woman—the Church—for three and a half years, as long as the Antichrist’s reign lasts. How will He nourish her? He knows.

He fed Israel with the well-known manna for forty years—not three and a half years, but forty. God knows. That is God’s concern. The Word of God is trustworthy—utterly trustworthy. So what do I have to worry about?

Therefore, Christ permits us to flee. Should we not remain and resist instead? Courage, boldness, martyrdom! But can everyone do that? Certainly not. For this reason Saint Cyril says, “He granted leave to the devout”—that is, He gave them permission and allowance to flee.

Saint Cyril now completes his commentary: “But if anyone knows within himself that he is truly steadfast”—if anyone knows that he is firmly established in the faith—“so that he may wrestle against Satan,” who will be acting through the person of the Antichrist, “let him stand.” Let him not flee to the mountains; let him remain in the city. “For I do not despair of the sinews of the Church.” The sinews of the Church—what does that mean? The sinews are what hold a body together. It is not only the skeleton, but also the sinews. The proof is that if a man loses the use of his sinews, his skeleton alone cannot hold him upright. If the sinews in his legs fail, what happens? He cannot stand. The skeleton is not enough. So the sinews—or the single strong sinew—of the Church are the Confessors and the Martyrs. Can you stand firm? Then remain. Can you not stand firm? Then flee. The one who remains will be saved, and the one who flees will also be saved, because God permits you to flee in order to save and help you. And then the one who remains—notice this, because I would like us to reflect on it—“let him say”:

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” and the words that follow. This, my beloved, is taken from Romans 8:31 and following. This celebrated passage is more than a single verse; it is an entire renowned section. Why is it so renowned? Because the Apostle Paul says there, “Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Famine? Hunger? Death?”

“Death, principalities, powers, anything above, height, or anything below.” What does “height” mean? If I am promised honors, comfort, and glory, can these things separate me from the love of Christ? This is what they did to the martyrs. They made them every promise imaginable. “No,” the martyrs replied.

“Depth” means humiliation: being socially and publicly degraded. Yet nothing, he says, is capable of separating us—not principalities, not powers, not things present, not things to come, not angels, and not demons. Nothing is able to separate me from the love of Christ.

This is very important. Here is our question: what do you think would make us strong against the Antichrist? And do not imagine that this concerns only the future. At every moment we encounter antichrist-like people—small antichrists, as it were—as well as the whole spirit of the world.

Is it faith? You see, it is not faith alone; it is love. This is exceedingly important, and I ask you to fasten it firmly in your minds—to tie a knot around it, so to speak. This means that no one should boast, “I have faith, and I am a good Christian.” If a person does not pass from faith to hope, and from hope to love—yes, to love—then he has accomplished nothing. Here we are speaking of love for God, not love for our neighbor: love for God, and specifically for the divine-human person of Christ, the God-Man. It is a love that casts you into the flames. If we ever attain to this, a person will be able not only to suffer martyrdom, but above all to be saved.

Faith alone, my beloved, will not save us. We must love. There must be this relationship of love between the believer and Christ. Do not forget that faith does not by itself create initiation, the initiate, and entry into the Mystery; love does. This is also what “mystical” means: the way by which I come to be united with Christ. It is not faith alone. Faith is surpassed and brought to fulfillment by love.

That is why that supper is called the Mystical Supper. You know, the expression “Mystical Supper” does not appear in Holy Scripture. Search all four Evangelists and you will see that the term is not there. What, then, does it mean? There is a troparion of the Holy Eucharist which says: “Receive me today, O Son of God, as a partaker of Thy Mystical Supper.” What does this mean? What did the disciples do at that time? They became partakers of the Body and Blood of Christ. In other words, they entered into a relationship, into union with Him.

This is what initiation and “mystical” mean: something unitive. It brings the human person and God into communion and participation. Of course, we believe that in this participation we receive the whole Christ, yet without confusion. In other words, if I sin, this does not mean that Christ’s divine-human nature sins together with me. This is the kind of union we have. And here we would say that what brings about this union is love. It is not faith alone, although faith is presupposed, as we noted earlier.

Faith is not enough, my beloved; we must come to possess this love. The Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is an expression of love—but not when we receive Holy Communion merely out of habit or in some careless manner. This concerns all of us: you and us, and us and you. We must receive in such a way that this love is truly expressed. If I give you an image of such an expression, you will be shaken. Saint Symeon the New Theologian saw his body filled with theosis, and—how far I am from such a state!—he felt that the members of Christ had become his own members, and he said:

“Where can I place my feet? Where can I place my hands? You have taken possession of them all; You are united with me. I am ashamed even to look at myself, because You are united with me.” He did not say this as poetry or literary ornament, as we sometimes write about feelings that are merely imagined. He lived and experienced the Mystery. Only then can we say that we love. It is overwhelming, my beloved. This is why Saint Cyril says that only those who possess love will stand firm and be able to say, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” and so forth.

“But let those of us who are fainthearted secure ourselves.” It is striking that Saint Cyril, as he speaks, includes himself both among the courageous and among the fainthearted. If you noticed it when I read the passage, this is not merely a figure of speech. Could I say that I am a saint and that you are sinners? God forbid! So, to avoid such a thing, I might say “we saints” and “we sinners.” But here it is not merely a figure of speech. I see something deeper in it: was Saint Cyril certain that, if the trial were set before him at a particular moment, he would be able to stand as a confessor of Christ?

Does he claim that? I will tell you personally: I would like to stand firm, but I am not certain that I would. Therefore, I can only place myself in both groups. I do not rule out the possibility that I may prove courageous, but neither do I rule out the possibility that I may prove fainthearted. Would any of you like to tell us, “Oh, I will stand courageously”? Let no one say such a thing. He is deceiving himself. I do not know what I would do. At that hour, the one who says, “I will stand courageously,” may be forsaken by the Spirit of God because of his pride and so fall away. But the one who says, “I do not know; I do not know,” is already taking a courageous stance. “But let those of us who are courageous stand firm.”

Those who are courageous—let us stand firm. “For then there will be great tribulation,” he repeats, because Christ says it, “such as has not been from the beginning of creation until now, nor ever shall be.” The first phrase, “great tribulation,” was spoken by Daniel. The fuller description was spoken by Christ in Matthew 24:21. Saint Cyril continues: “But thanks be to God, who has confined the magnitude of the tribulation to a few days.” Glory to God! All this suffering of the saints will last only a short time. It will not continue for long. “For He says”—and who says it? Christ again, in the same Evangelist and the same chapter—“for the sake of the elect,” meaning the saints, “those days will be shortened.” To shorten means to reduce in length. It is like cutting short an animal’s tail. So the days will be shortened—not, of course, because a day will contain fewer than twenty-four hours, but because there will be few such days. The period will be brief. “And the Antichrist will reign for only three and a half years.” Some people say that the Antichrist will reign for seven years.

Only three and a half years. Let us pause here for a moment. The period, then, cannot be long: it is three and a half years. Yet that time will be so terrible that it will seem endless. But, my dear friends, it is not long. You know that God does not place upon us a burden greater than we can bear. If at times we feel weighed down, it is not because the burden itself is too great, but because we imagine that we cannot carry it. The Spirit of God bears witness to this in the New Testament.

“God will not allow you,” says the Apostle Paul, “to be tempted or tested beyond what you are able to endure.” If at times we rebel against the temptation, cast Christ aside, and say, “I cannot go on,” it is because we have not discovered the full measure of the strength God has stored within us, and we imagine that we do not possess such strength. Please, let us remember this. Thus, “the Antichrist will reign for only three and a half years.” Remember that word “only.” “We do not say this on the authority of apocryphal writings, but from Daniel,” of course.

We did not derive these three and a half years from apocryphal books—that is, books not recognized by our Church—but from Holy Scripture. From whom? From Daniel himself. Here is what he says: “And it shall be given into his hand until a time, and times, and half a time.” It will be given into his hand—that is, placed under his authority—until “a time,” in the singular, “times,” in the plural, “and half a time.” “The one time is the period during which his presence will at first increase.” I shall return to this text.

“The remaining two years, during which his lawlessness will unfold, are counted together with the first to make three”—one plus two makes three—“and then half a time,” meaning six months. “And half a time”: one six-month period. Therefore, three and a half years. You may ask whether this interpretation is correct. Saint Cyril takes another passage from Daniel. The passage cited here is Daniel, chapter 7, verse 25. The second passage he cites is Daniel, chapter 12, verse 7. And what does it say? “And he swore…” “And he swore by Him who lives forever that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time.” The same phrase is repeated. “Some have perhaps understood in this sense also what follows: ‘One thousand two hundred and ninety days,’ and, ‘Blessed is he who patiently endures and reaches one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days. Therefore, we must hide ourselves and flee,’” and so forth. Here the phrase “a time, times, and half a time” is expressed in days. When those days are calculated, they amount to three and a half years. This is not an arbitrary conclusion, because the Prophet Daniel himself gives us the key for interpreting

the prophecy. Do you understand? It will be, he says, one thousand two hundred and ninety days. Three and a half years amount to 1,275 days. I shall explain why. And blessed is the one who patiently endures and reaches 1,335 days. First of all, “a time, times, and half a time” is equated in the passage I read with this number of days. Therefore, it is three and a half years. But why does he then give us the days separately? Because he is telling us something more. My dear friends, let us not forget what I said: Daniel sees the antitype of the Antichrist, and the Antichrist himself. The antitype of the Antichrist is Antiochus Epiphanes. Antiochus did indeed reign from 168—pardon me, from earlier than that; he reigned for many years—but his persecution of the Jews began in 168, as we know from history, and he died in 165. If you take into account that the persecution may have begun early in 168 and ended toward the close of 165, the calculation gives us three and a half years.

When Daniel says, “Blessed is the one who endures and lives for one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days,” what does he mean? There are certain things which, if you look them up in the commentaries, will astonish you. When Antiochus Epiphanes died during the war against the Parthians, there were no telegraphs or telegraph wires. The news arrived when 1,335 days had been completed from the time he began inflicting violence and oppression upon the people of God. Therefore, blessed was the one who lived through those 1,335 days and heard the news that Antiochus had died.

How do these numbers work out? I am not inventing them—God forbid. They are written in Holy Scripture. Go to the Old Testament and begin reading it word by word, and you will be astonished—naturally, with the help of a commentary. We have both Patristic and modern aids that can help us understand these things very well indeed. So, how long does the Antichrist reign? Three and a half years. But why did the Prophet say “one time, two times, and half a time”? Why did he use this form? Pay attention; I am showing it with my hand: one time, two times, and a half. Something is hidden here.

He did not say “three and a half years.” He said one plus two plus one-half. What is hidden in this? The different phases of his activity during those three and a half years. The Prophet thus reveals how he will act throughout that period, and Saint Cyril explains it as follows. Listen carefully to his words.

“The one time is the period during which his presence will at first increase.” This is the first year, during which he gains supremacy: his rise and consolidation of power. We see how this happens, my dear friends. Someone is elected, and before he can put everything in order, begin exercising authority, change things, and so forth, he spends some time working with what he inherited. This is very well known. During the first year, then, the Antichrist will simply establish himself in power. Then come “the remaining two years of lawlessness.” Thus, the first year is the year of his rise

and consolidation. During the next two years, he will manifest the full extent of his lawlessness—his persecution of all people, and especially of Christians. These years are counted together to make three. And there is still more. The remaining half a time, my dear friends, will be the period in which the curve begins to descend. In other words, when those six months are completed, he too will come to his end. How will he end? He will be put to death by Christ. Yet the Antichrist will not be put to death—not in the ordinary sense in which we say, “I will kill you,” as I have explained to you before.

The Evangelist John says in the Apocalypse that the Antichrist—the Beast—and the false prophet will be cast alive into the lake of fire. “Alive” means that when Christ comes and the Resurrection of the dead takes place, they will still be living. This is why the Second Coming of Christ coincides with the end of those three and a half years. Thus, we shall know when Christ is coming in a general sense, although we shall not know the precise day or hour, as He says. Those living in the Last Things (eschata) will know the approximate time. When you see the buds swelling on the fig tree, you say, “Summer is coming.”

When you see these events, you will say that the end is near. I am not saying this on my own. Do not imagine that we are contradicting Christ’s prophecy that no one knows when Christ will come. When people then see these events, they will say, “The end is here.” The exact day will remain unknown, but the end will be at hand. Do you understand? Did you notice the distinction? So, God forbid that anyone should consider me presumptuous toward the Word of God. May it never be; may God preserve us. I would not wish to alter even one iota of what the Word of God says. And if I sometimes make a mistake, may both God and you forgive me; I am human. But I would not wish to add even one iota of my own to what the Word of God sets forth and what the Fathers hand down and interpret.

So, the total period of his activity comes to three and a half years. When we said that they would be cast alive into the lake of fire, this means that they will pass from the corruption of this present age into the incorruption of the age to come, as will happen to everyone still living at that time. The Apostle Paul states this clearly in his Epistle to the Thessalonians. What does he say? We who remain, we who are still alive—and naturally the Antichrist will also be alive—will not taste death, but we shall be changed. Into what? From corruption into incorruption, and from mortality into immortality. Then some will enter the Kingdom of God, while others will enter eternal Hell.

This is the lake burning with fire and brimstone, an image of Hell. The Antichrist and the false prophet will indeed be cast into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Hell was prepared for the devil. Thus, “alive” means that they will not have tasted death; through this change from corruption into incorruption, they will go directly into Hell. You see, these are awe-inspiring realities. Therefore, there is no interval between the Antichrist and the Second Coming of Christ. The two events are directly connected; one follows immediately upon the other. I say this because there is also a belief—I have mentioned it before, but there is no harm in repeating it—that after

the defeat of the Antichrist, Christ will reign invisibly for a thousand years. No. This is a millenarian view, even if presented in what we might call a spiritual form. No. The Church accepts and believes what I have told you, not that a thousand years will pass after the Antichrist. If you ask why the period is three and a half years, someone might say, “Why three and a half? Why precisely that long?” Consider what Christ said: if God had not shortened those days… Therefore, the length of the period is under God’s control. God does not wish to allow it to continue any longer. At the same time, the number also serves what we might call a mystical interpretation.

It is this: three and a half is half of seven, and seven is a sacred number signifying completeness. We speak of the seven Mysteries through which the human person is saved. To say three and a half would be like speaking of three and a half Mysteries—something incomplete. The Antichrist will not have time to complete his destructive work. This is what three and a half years, half of seven, signifies. And there is something else that is very beautiful and may seem a little difficult at first, though it really is not.

“Therefore, we must hide ourselves and flee.” That is why, he says, we must conceal ourselves and flee. “For perhaps you will not have finished going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.” Christ says this in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 10, verse 23. Regarding the phrase “you will not have finished,” my dear friends, pay attention to the following. The passage can be understood here in this way. When Christ said to His disciples, “Before you finish, before you complete your journey”—for He had sent them through the cities and villages—“before you complete your journey, the Kingdom of God will have come.”

Pay attention: this does not always refer to the Second Coming of Christ. It can mean that the preaching, the Gospel, has in some manner been heard. Now, regarding the period under discussion, Christ says: “If they persecute you, flee from that city and go to another. If they persecute you from that second city, go to a third. Do not remain there; flee.”

My friends, I tell you that before you finish preaching throughout the cities, the Kingdom of God will come. This does not necessarily have an eschatological meaning. Saint Cyril applies it aptly to show that we must flee from the Antichrist.

Remember the case of Saint Julitta in her homeland, somewhere in Syria. A persecution broke out, so she took her little child, Saint Cyricus, and fled to another city. When trouble broke out there as well, she fled again to yet another city. In the end, of course, she was arrested and suffered martyrdom. The meaning of the passage is this: as you flee, do not imagine that you will have to wander endlessly. You flee from one place and then from another. They do not know you there; they do not know you in the next place either. Do you realize that you are in danger? Flee. You will go to a second city, then a third. How many cities of Israel were there? Would you have time to finish going through them all? In other words, while you are fleeing from place to place—and this is the meaning of the passage—you will not have time to complete any long journey before Christ comes, because the whole affair of the Antichrist will have come to an end. My dear friends, Saint Cyril continues in paragraph 17: “Who, then, will be blessed who at that time bears witness with reverence and suffers martyrdom for Christ?” Who will be that blessed person who reverently gives his testimony and suffers martyrdom for Christ?

“For I say that the martyrs of that time will surpass all other martyrs. Those who came before wrestled only against men, but those who live under the Antichrist will wage war face to face against Satan himself.” The martyrs of that age—and this is why they will be blessed—will stand far above the martyrs of past centuries. Why? Because the martyrs of past centuries fought against Satan’s instruments: the emperors, governors, and all those other men under whom the tortures and persecutions took place.

But then one will have to wrestle with the devil himself, personally. For through the Antichrist, the devil will unleash all his fury. You understand, then, that the tortures of that time will be far more terrible—far more terrible. What will they be like? I try to grasp it, but I cannot. Yet the Word of God says that those martyrs will be far more blessed than the martyrs of any other age. I often sit and ponder this, and I think: today there are various drugs that can paralyze a person and make him lose his very sense of self. It is a dreadful thing. In earlier times, a martyr was attacked only in his body. Today, his very person can be attacked by means of

drugs and chemical substances, until his personality itself is shattered. It is dreadful! But since our time has passed, my beloved, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Έτρεφε 40, όχι 3,5 χρόνια, 40 χρόνια τον Ισραήλ με το γνωστό μάννα. Ο Θεός ξέρει. Αυτό είναι δικό του Θεού. Είναι αξιόπιστος ο Λόγος του Θεού. Είναι αξιόπιστος. Συνεπώς, εγώ τι έχω να ανησυχώ;

«Ἀλλ’ οἱ δειλοὶ μὲν ἑαυτοὺς ἀσφαλιζώμεθα». Είναι έτσι χαρακτηριστικό ότι, ομιλώντας ο Άγιος Κύριλος, βάζει τον εαυτόν του και εις τους ανδρείους και εις τους δειλούς. Είναι, αν το προσέξατε, όπως το ανέφερα στην ανάγνωση, που σημαίνει ότι δεν είναι ένα σχήμα λόγου. Μπορεί να σταθεί και ένα σχήμα λόγου για μια στιγμή. Να λέω εγώ ότι είμαι άγιος και εσείς αμαρτωλοί; Προς Θεού! Οπότε, για να μην γίνει αυτό, λέω «εμείς οι άγιοι», να τα λέω «εμείς οι αμαρτωλοί». Δεν είναι όμως σχήμα λόγου. Εγώ το βλέπω λίγο βαθύτερο και είναι το εξής: ήτο σίγουρος ο Άγιος Κύριλος ότι θα μπορούσε, σε μια δεδομένη στιγμή, αν τα πράγματα ετίθεντο μπροστά του, ότι θα μπορούσε να σταθεί ομολογητής του Χριστού;

Θυμηθείτε την περίπτωση της Αγίας Ιουλίττης, που έγινε στην πατρίδα της, κάπου στη Συρία. Έγινε διωγμός, πήρε το παιδάκι της, τον Άγιο Κήρυκο, και φεύγει πάλι σε άλλη πόλη. Από εκεί κάτι ξέσπασε εκεί πέρα, φεύγει από εκεί πάλι σε άλλη πόλη. Τελικά βέβαια εμαρτύρησε, συνελήφθη και εμαρτύρησε. Η έννοια του χωρίου είναι η εξής: φεύγοντες, μην νομίσετε ότι έχουμε να κάνουμε ατελείωτες πορείες. Διότι φεύγετε από εδώ και έπειτα από αλλού. Δεν σας ξέρουν εκεί, δεν σας ξέρουν εκεί. Αντιλαμβάνεστε ότι κινδυνεύετε; Φύγετε. Θα πάτε σε δεύτερη, τρίτη πόλη. Πόσες ήταν οι πόλεις του Ισραήλ; Ώστε να πει: Θα προλάβετε να τις τελειώσετε, γυρίζοντας και περιοδεύοντας; Με άλλα λόγια, ενώ θα φεύγετε από τόπου εις τόπον —αυτό είναι το νόημα του χωρίου— δεν θα προλάβετε να ολοκληρώσετε μεγάλες πορείες, θα έρθει ο Χριστός. Διότι θα έχει τελειώσει η όλη υπόθεση του Αντιχρίστου. Αγαπητοί μου, λέει στη συνέχεια, παράγραφος 17: «Τις άρα μακάριος ο υπέρ Χριστού μετ' ευλαβείας μαρτυρών τότε;» Ποιος θα είναι εκείνος ο ευτυχισμένος που με ευλάβεια θα δώσει τη μαρτυρία του και θα μαρτυρήσει υπέρ του Χριστού;
