Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets Paul’s prophecy as teaching that the Antichrist will exalt himself above every religion and occupy the abandoned Jewish Temple. Jewish longing for the Temple’s restoration, symbolized by prayer at the Western Wall, is presented as the national and religious expectation that the false messiah will exploit. A 1987 appeal associated with Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson is cited as evidence of organized Jewish expectation concerning the Messiah and active preparation for rebuilding the Temple.

We are, my beloved, at the fifteenth paragraph of Saint Cyril’s fifteenth catechetical lecture. We did, of course, study and read some of this paragraph last Monday, with a few interpretive comments. But because it is so interesting, I will repeat the text, and we shall see what it has to tell us. “And again he says: the one who opposes and exalts himself above everything that is called God or an object of worship.” By “above every God,” he means that the Antichrist will hate the idols.
“He will seat himself in the Temple of God.” But which temple? The abandoned Temple of the Jews. God forbid that he should mean this temple in which we are. Why do we say this? So that no one may think we are favoring ourselves. For since he comes to the Jews as Christ and intends to be worshiped by them, he will take particular care over their temple in order to deceive them all the more, giving them the impression that he is the one descended from David. He will rebuild the Temple that Solomon constructed.
Let us continue. “And again he says.” Who says this? The Apostle Paul, who speaks about the Antichrist in his Second Epistle to the Thessalonians. “The one who opposes”—the one who sets himself against Christ—“and exalts himself above everything,” above everything called religion, “God or an object of worship.” An object of worship means a religion, anything regarded as worthy of reverence. “Above every God.” This indicates, then, that the Antichrist will hate the idols.
These words show that the Antichrist will go so far as to sit in the Temple of God. But which temple? He means the abandoned Temple of the Jews. Who means this? What is the subject of the sentence? Paul, when he says that the Antichrist will sit in this Temple of God. Which temple, then, does Paul mean? “God forbid that he should mean this one in which we are,” Saint Cyril says. Which temple was that? Where were they? They were in Constantine’s church, the Church of the Resurrection, which had already been built and had been consecrated some twenty years earlier, or perhaps a little less.
These catechetical lectures were delivered around the year 350 after Christ. Why do we mention this? So that no one may think we are favoring ourselves. For if the Antichrist comes to the Jews as Christ and desires to be worshiped by them, then, in order to deceive them more completely, he will take great pains over the Temple of Solomon. In this way he will strengthen the suspicion that he is descended from David, as they expect. This is what we were saying: he will come from among the Hebrews.
The Antichrist will be from among the Hebrews and will come to the Hebrews. He will build—he will rebuild—the Temple originally constructed by Solomon. I have given you a clear translation, my beloved, so that we may now examine something here. Indeed, if you wish, in order to complete the thought, let me take a little from what follows, because it is connected: “The Antichrist will come when, in the Temple of the Jews, not one stone remains upon another, according to the declaration of the Savior.”
The word translated as “declaration” means a saying or pronouncement.
“Whether through its collapse from age, or under the pretext of rebuilding it, or for some other reason—pay attention—he will tear down all the stones. I do not mean those of the outer enclosure, but those of the inner Temple, where the Cherubim once were. Then that one will come, armed with every power and with lying signs and wonders,” and so forth. I shall translate it for you. The Antichrist will come then. When? When, within the precincts of the Temple of the Jews, not one stone remains upon another.
This is according to the word of the Lord. For the Antichrist will tear down all the stones. And I do not mean the stones of the outer enclosure, but those of the Temple itself, where the Cherubim were. This will happen either because the Temple’s remains collapse from age, or under the pretext that a new temple is to be built, or for some other reason. When this happens, the Antichrist will appear “with all power and signs and lying wonders,” and so forth, my beloved.
I have read the translation as well. If you prefer, I rendered it rather freely; I did not give a strictly literal, word-for-word translation. Let us now see, my beloved, exactly what is happening here. He will rebuild the abandoned Temple of the Jews, the Temple that was destroyed. Of course, he will not go into a Christian church. In his interpretation of the Apocalypse, Arethas of Caesarea says, “What do you think? Where will he be? The Antichrist is already in the church of Constantinople.” This is true in a certain sense, because “everyone who denies Christ”—or, if you prefer, every heretic—is an antichrist.
He is an antichrist because the Evangelist John gives us a clear definition of the Antichrist. Who, he asks, becomes an antichrist? Who else but the one who denies that the Son of God has come in the flesh—that is, that the Son of God became man? Such a person, he says, becomes an antichrist. I explained this to you on an earlier occasion, so I shall not analyze it further. If there is a heretical patriarch who, for a time, still celebrates the Divine Liturgy because he has not yet been deposed—or perhaps is never deposed at all, since times can sometimes be strange and perplexing—he is called an antichrist. Anyone who embraces any heresy is an antichrist. This is the sense in which Arethas says it.
He is interpreting the Apocalypse. But take care: such a person is not the Antichrist in the fullest sense, the prototype, the principal person himself. That principal person will not sit in a Christian church, and this is reasonable. Saint Cyril tells us this very clearly here. If he were to establish himself in a Christian church—and which church in that region could attract the Hebrews more strongly?—it would be this magnificent, great church, a center for the whole world. People gather from the ends of the inhabited world to venerate the All-Holy Tomb.
If, then, the Antichrist entered the Christian church—Saint Cyril says that we are not saying this to favor ourselves; it is simply the reality—how could he persuade the Hebrews of who he claimed to be? They would say to him, “You are dwelling in a Christian church.” What would that make him? In a manner of speaking, he would appear to be a continuation of Christ. No. It is logical, you understand. He will go and build the Temple of Solomon. This is the eternal expectation and longing of the Hebrews for their Temple. To help you understand it, I shall draw a parallel from our own experience.
In our generation—and I do not know about those who will come after us—there is something within us, shaped by what we heard at school and by the way we were raised. On national holidays we carried the flag and little flags, and we went out singing patriotic songs and marches; the same happened in the army, and so forth. Deep within us there is a longing to take back the City and Hagia Sophia. As folklorists have very aptly observed, wherever Greeks are—at the village fountain, on the floor of a church, everywhere—they place the double-headed eagle. The double-headed eagle is not a Christian symbol; it is a national symbol. And sometimes we say within ourselves, “Could it perhaps happen in my lifetime...”
“...that I might go as far as Hagia Sophia and attend the Divine Liturgy there?” This shows you what national longing means. I gave this example so that you might understand what it means to say that the Hebrews long for the rebuilding of their Temple. And, if I may say so, their longing for their Temple is many times greater—many times greater—because we, after all, have had many churches. Constantinople may have been, geographically speaking, one place of great importance to us, and so forth. But the Hebrew has one unique Temple: the Temple of Solomon. There is no other Temple, and this one has a long history.
Its history reaches back many centuries before Christ, and the Hebrew nation is bound together with its religion. Thus the Hebrew longs all the more intensely for the rebuilding of the Temple. The Hebrews clearly did not accept Christ as the Messiah because He did not fulfill their national expectations. That was the reason. Since they still cling to those national expectations, when someone comes who does fulfill them—with the Temple of Solomon as their central symbol, now a worldwide symbol...
You understand that this is the one they will accept. Nineteen hundred years have passed since the Temple was torn down. Nothing of the Temple remains, my beloved—nothing, not even a single stone. There is nothing. What survives—as you may have seen in photographs, without needing to visit the place itself—is only a section of the western wall. Nothing else. That is all. Nothing of the Temple itself remains. And what does Saint Cyril say here? He says that the Antichrist will not tear down the outer enclosure, but will tear down whatever remains of the ancient Temple. Why?
He must clear it away. How do you suppose this will happen? Bear in mind that in the year 350 after Christ, when Saint Cyril spoke and wrote, the Temple no longer existed. But neither did the Mosque of Omar yet exist; at that time there were simply ruins. Nothing else was there, only the ruins of the ancient Temple. Yet Saint Cyril notes that when you see the Temple being built, the Antichrist will come. He will either be coming or already be present. But why—this is your great question—has this Temple not been built to this day?
A simple answer is that the Mosque of Omar was built on its site: a mosque, that is, a Muslim place of worship. His name is pronounced Omar in Arabic and Ömer in Turkish. He was an associate of Muhammad and therefore belonged to the seventh century. At first, he completely rejected Muhammad and his teachings and was plainly opposed to him. Later, however, he accepted Muhammad and became an ardent supporter. In the end, this Omar was assassinated. He built a place of worship—a mosque—and it took his name: the Mosque of Omar. That is the whole matter.
It is a very remarkable place of worship; as a building, it is highly notable and very artfully made. It stands directly upon the site where the Temple of Solomon once stood. One might call it the enduring abomination. Even before the Temple was destroyed in the year 70 after Christ, the abomination spoken of by Daniel the Prophet had already been set up, as the Lord Himself mentions: “When you see the abomination...” The abomination was nothing other than a statue of Zeus, or a statue of the emperor, or of Aphrodite. They even went so far as to plan a temple of Aphrodite upon Golgotha, so that even the name of Christ might be forgotten.
A temple of Aphrodite, the goddess of immorality. But, you see, Christ is the true God, and He does not allow such things to happen. Yet the abomination was imposed and remains to this day, because, in essence, Islam—for the Jews, as many would agree—is an abomination. Of course, it is no longer a statue of the emperor or a statue of Zeus, but it is the Muslim mosque. Will it remain there? The Antichrist will destroy that mosque; he will tear it down. Besides, today, as we say, this could very easily happen. I heard—and I told you this last time as well—that when someone asked, “What will happen to the Mosque of Omar?” the answer was, “In one night, it was gone.”
For the Jews today, this would not be difficult. Besides, they control the land; that is, it belongs to them—it is the State of Israel. For them, it is not difficult. Others will protest, calling it “a cultural monument,” but that will mean very little to them—nothing at all. Yet the question remains: why was the Temple not rebuilt for nineteen hundred years? The Mosque of Omar was built in the seventh century. Why was the Temple not rebuilt during the preceding centuries? It makes you wonder. There is a tradition that says the following. I do not remember where it is found. One of the Fathers of the Church mentions this tradition. At the moment, I cannot remember whether it is in Chrysostom or in the Euthymian writings—the account I am about to tell you.
Julian the Apostate wanted to rebuild the Temple in order to prove Christ false. Christ had prophesied, “Not one stone will be left upon another.” So, in order to prove Christ false, Julian gave orders and sent workers to build the Temple. When they began digging the foundations for the building, we are told that whenever a pickaxe struck the ground, fire and stones burst out from the foundations. The stones were hurled like missiles and struck the workers. And then the answer was given...
It is impossible for the Temple to be rebuilt. Does that surprise you? It is Christ’s prophecy. Why? Because Christ is true. How is it that the Temple has not been rebuilt for nineteen hundred years? Yet the prophecy also says that the Temple will be rebuilt. When? When the appointed hour comes. That hour is awaited, and it is the hour of the Antichrist. Then, my dear friends, the Temple will be completed. Listen to something concerning this.
You may have heard that in America—or, according to another account, in Germany, which seems more likely—the stones for the rebuilding are already prepared and stored in crates. Perhaps you have heard this. A reasonable question arises: does Palestine have no stones, so that they must be transported by ship across entire oceans to Jerusalem in order to build the Temple? After all, what kind of stones are these? Precious stones? No. Stones—notice this—ordinary stones. It is significant that Zionism...
Zionism, as you call it, has, one might say, no connection with the Old Testament in the sense of the devout Jew. Zionists have as much connection with the Old Testament as the Sadducees did in the time of Christ. For the Zionists are essentially Sadducees, although they have, of course, supplemented their outlook with many other things that there is no time to discuss now. First of all, Zionism sets Freemasonry in motion. It is the Kabbalah—Kabbalah with two b’s. This tradition is filled with Gnosticism, with Alexandrian Gnosticism, and with magic. There are many things involved in all this.
What connection can these people have with the Old Testament? They have no connection, yet they have a certain connection. They must preserve certain appearances. Caiaphas was a Sadducee. He did not believe in the prophecies or in the resurrection of the dead. They were unbelieving people. They accepted God in a deistic sense. Deism means this: God is in heaven, minding His own affairs. What does He have to do with us? He made the world and mankind, but what does He have to do with us? Yes, indeed. And yet you hear Caiaphas tearing his garments when he heard that Jesus would come upon the clouds of heaven and that He...
...was claiming the title of Messiah. He tore his garments and said with the utmost hypocrisy, “What further need have we of witnesses?” Did you hear him? Supposedly devout, pretending that, as high priest, he had to defend the rights of God on earth and that Jesus must now die. And what did they say to Pilate? “He must die, because our law says that He must die.” “Yes, but what has He done?” Pilate asked. After all, Pilate viewed the matter according to Roman law. “He made Himself God.” They believed none of it. It was merely a pretext.
The only purpose was to condemn Jesus. They also envied Jesus, because the people were following Him and they themselves had lost the people. The Apostle and Evangelist John says, “Because of envy they delivered Him up.” Thus the Zionists, too, will display certain outward signs that they observe some law. These are, of course, such minor matters that Christ rightly said of them: “You tithe mint and cumin, but you have neglected the weightier matters of the law.” So now, listen. These people, in order to show...
...that they faithfully observe the law, read in Holy Scripture that God commanded Moses that no hammer, chisel, or cutting tool was to be heard within Jerusalem, and that the stones had to be cut elsewhere, at the quarries, and brought in already prepared. This, then, is one means by which they—or the Antichrist who is to come—may deceive the Jewish people even more, as though saying, “We are observing the law down to its smallest detail, down to the last iota.”
What does the law say? God says to Moses: “If you make Me an altar of stones, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you have laid your tool upon them, they have been defiled.” If you apply a tool—if you use a hammer and chisel—then, He says, the stones have been defiled. Why? It seems strange. The purpose was this: if they made carved stones, then, because they had a tendency toward idolatry, they might eventually fall into idolatry, my dear friends. Or there was another reason: as the Jews moved from place to place, if they made a fine altar with carvings, then after they departed, the pagan idolaters might offer their own sacrifices upon that same altar.
To prevent this, God says: you shall use simple, natural stones—above all, unhewn stones. This is why He says that you shall not use a chisel, for you would defile the stones. There is nothing strange about the words, “You would defile the stones.” Do you now understand what was meant? God also says through Moses in Deuteronomy 27:5: “And there you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, an altar of stones; you shall not wield iron upon them.” There, He says, you shall make an altar of stones, and “you shall not wield iron upon them.” You shall not use iron tools upon the stones. And now we come to the account of the building of the Temple of Solomon. Let us go on.
And no axe or any other iron tool was heard in the house while it was being built. No hammer, adze, axe, chisel, or any iron tool, he says, was heard while the Temple was being built.
That is why they have the stones prepared in America. Now someone might say, “But these are fairy tales—stones from America?” There it is; do you understand? That is the reason. Thus we see, my dear friends, the Antichrist and the forerunners of the Antichrist, the Zionists. The Zionists are the forerunners of the Antichrist. Allow me to say that perhaps—perhaps—it is not the Jewish people. Permit me to say this: it is not the Jewish people, but the Zionists. And you can learn what Zionism is from many sources.
They, then, are the ones preparing the way for the Antichrist. The Antichrist, or his forerunners, outwardly imitate certain features of the Temple’s construction so that they may appear to be following the Mosaic commandments and, in this way, deceive the Jewish people even more. It is a tragic matter, and in the end this people is a tragic people. It begins with a dream, only to arrive at nothing—and the answer is chaos. As we were saying during the question period, it is a struggle without a purpose. In the end, there will be no result at all.
Perhaps they will fall and... Yet one can see that in our own time something exists that certainly did not exist in earlier years: an activity, a movement centered on the rebuilding of the Temple. You can see all this. As I showed you last time—and those of you who were not here may look at it now—I have before me a copy of The New York Times, dated July 15 of this current year, 1987. It contains a full-page text and a photograph.
It is a photograph of part of the western wall of Jerusalem, the wall of the Temple enclosure, with the Temple site higher up. The Jews gather there. They go there and venerate it; in a manner of speaking, they weep and pray. They weep and pray there at the wall, solely because of this national and religious longing. The page also contains a text that Mr. Syngletis—whom I do not see here—was kind enough to translate for us, and I shall read it. Here it is; you will see it. First, let us look at the main heading as it appears. The title is: “After 1,900 Years, It Is Time for a Change.” Do you see it? Here it is.
Now, my dear friends, let me translate what it says.
A faithful translation was made. The photograph is very good. Beneath it is written: “The remaining western wall of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.” The text says: “You may think that you are successful and happy. But let us face the facts. This world is in a very bad state. Disease, hunger, corruption, crime, and terror have become part of reality. Is this beyond our control? Not according to the Jewish faith. Maimonides tells us...” As I read, I shall also explain a few things.
Maimonides, my dear friends, was a Jew whose full name was Moses Maimonides. He was a Jewish rabbi and philosopher of the twelfth century who believed the following. For him, Messianism—you can find this in an encyclopedia if you wish, which is also where I found it—meant human brotherhood. That says a great deal! It says a great deal! This was written in the twelfth century. The works of this rabbi are rationalistic in character.
It says a great deal because it calls ecumenism to mind, since ecumenism appeals to the brotherhood of people and nations through love. It says a great deal. So they invoke Maimonides, to use the Greek form of his name. Maimonides tells us: even one good thought, word, or deed can influence the whole world forever. Of course, I cannot say that ecumenism is forged solely on the authority of Maimonides, but his words play their part. His teaching does indeed influence the whole world in the forging of ecumenism, which, if you wish to know...
...is forged in foul-smelling dens, though I will not name them. We believe that this world can be moral and good. It lies within our power to turn things around and make the world a fitting place for the presence of God. This is in the hands of one individual—and that means you, the Jew. The period of the Three Weeks is beginning right now, this year from July 14 to August 4. You know that the Jews observe such periods of fasting and mourning. The Old Testament mentions this as well.
You mourned, it says, in Babylon. Remember Psalm 137: “There we hung up our instruments, and we mourned and wept. How can I sing to you—how can I sing of you, Jerusalem—when I am far from you?” And so on. They mourned; they observed days of national mourning in remembrance of historical events. God says, “I do not want these things.” As we were saying yesterday concerning sacrifices: when you mix them with other things, I do not want them. I continue. The period of the Three Weeks is beginning right now. The third week is a time of sorrow over disastrous events in Jewish history.
Its culmination is the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem nineteen hundred years ago. Strictly speaking, it was the third Temple: the first was Solomon’s, the second Zerubbabel’s, and the third Herod’s. Strictly speaking, that is so. But it does not matter, because Zerubbabel’s Temple is often not counted, since it was built rather hastily at that time. “We mourn not only the loss of monuments, but, more importantly, the departure from among us of the revealed presence of God, which the Temple represented.” My dear friends, this point astonished me. After nineteen hundred years, they are still fixated...
The council had Saint Stephen standing before it, making his defense. “God,” he said—and he said it a little further on; we have not reached that point yet—“God does not dwell in temples made by human hands.” If you had God, it would not trouble you that you had no Temple, because God does not dwell in temples made by human hands. Yet you remain fixated on this and tell me that, because I say God does not dwell in temples made by human hands, I am blaspheming against the Temple. This was one of the three charges brought against Saint Stephen. You see the very same point—the very same point. It is a strange thing. There it is. And we continue, but...
Lubavitcher Rebbe. This word “Lubavitcher” apparently refers to some institution named after Lubavitch; as we would say today, it must be some kind of institution. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson—that is the name of the rabbi in question—stresses that mourning alone is not enough. The Three Weeks should be a time for action. Pay attention to this phrase: “We must find positive ways to express our faith in the coming of the Messiah and the rebuilding of the Temple.”
That phrase is significant: “We must find positive ways.” When the Messiah comes, he must find the Temple ready. They are waiting for the Messiah! They are waiting for God. Having rejected Christ, “we must find ways to correct the situation.”
For this reason, the rabbi proposed that they intensify their efforts in three areas. First: study the Torah. “Torah” is the Hebrew word for “law.” “Our sages tell us that God regards the study of the Temple’s construction as though we were actually building it.” The rabbi has therefore called upon all Jews to study the Holy Temple during these Three Weeks. The texts to be studied include Holy Scripture—Ezekiel, chapters 40 through 43—and the Talmud, which contains the Mishnah, itself a Jewish book, including the tractate Middot.
Also Halakha, and Maimonides’ code, Hilchot Beit HaBechirah. These are, of course, traditional books. All are available in English translation, with commentaries, illustrations, and diagrams. Lectures and study groups on these subjects will be held throughout the world during these weeks. It is striking—let me make a brief digression—that here in the newspaper text they do something intended as a sign of reverence. But it is like the story of the donkey that fell into the well: once they had pulled the donkey out, the people of Chios cried, “Its tail is dripping and will pollute the well water!” Now listen. Tradition says that the name of God was neither written nor pronounced, out of reverence. God’s name consisted of four letters. Hebrew does have vowels, but it does not write them. Thus the four-letter name of God was preserved in its consonants, but because we do not know how the whole name was pronounced, it was not spoken. Instead of Yahweh—that was the name, Yahweh—they said Adonai and used other names, because they did not wish to utter that sacred name of God.
This is what the Jews say, because, they tell us, the name of God is concealed. So we say approximately that the name must have been pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah. Yahweh seems the better, more careful, and closer pronunciation, rather than Jehovah. It consisted of four letters. What do the Jews do now? This struck me. The name of God appears twice, naturally in English; and in order to imitate the Hebrew four-letter name of God, which had no written vowels, they take the English word “God.”
In the possessive, we add an apostrophe and an s: “God’s,” meaning “of God.” Twice they remove the o—the omicron, to put it in Greek terms—and replace it with a dash. So they write G, then a dash, and then d. They remove the vowel in imitation of the omission of vowels from the four-letter name Yahweh, the Lord. Yahweh means “Lord.” That is how the Septuagint translates it: “Lord.” God says to Moses, “And My name is Lord.” That is all. So you see this small detail, intended to demonstrate adherence to the Mosaic Law. And yet some among them have ravaged humanity in the most criminal manner...
These people—you see their hypocrisy. We continue. Second, this rabbi recommends what should be done during these weeks: “Give more alms.” As the Prophet Isaiah says, “Those who return to Zion will be redeemed through almsgiving.” Third—and this is a little cunning, though I will not comment on it—third: arrange meetings; in other words, gather together. The Talmud points to ill feeling toward one another as the cause of the Temple’s destruction nineteen hundred years ago.
Because we quarreled, because we fought, because we Jews divided into factions, this became the occasion for us to lose our Temple. We must therefore become brothers again so that we can rebuild our Temple. That is what the Talmud says. The rabbi proposes correcting this by holding special gatherings. Correcting what? The lack of love and brotherhood among them. During these weeks, these gatherings are to encourage the growth of friendship, unity, and unconditional brotherly love. I will tell you a reference included in the text. The rabbi emphasized...
...the importance of passing this message on to children as well, and of giving them the opportunity to take part in the study of the Torah—the Law—in almsgiving, and in gatherings, especially those that are accessible to them in person, in groups and at summer camps. And it concludes, now in capital letters in the text: “Thus, everything depends on you”—that is, on the Jews, since the text is addressed to Jews. “The scales of the world stand evenly balanced. A little study of the Torah”—and from the context, it is indeed the Torah, the Law...
...as we have said—“a little almsgiving or brotherly love may tip the balance of history. That deed may be uniquely yours and personal to you. What we do now depends on you.” From all this, my dear friends, I would now like to make two or three observations on the text. First, we see a longing for former glory. Second, the Three Weeks of mourning are intended to preserve the historical memory—it says this plainly—of the past, culminating in the destruction of the Temple. It says so right there. Third...
They mourn the departure of the revealed presence of God. This shows that, like the members of the council who condemned Saint Stephen, they persist in the former belief that God dwells only in the Temple at Jerusalem. Fourth, there is an appeal for action to repair the damage of the past. They say, “We must find positive ways to express our faith in the coming of the Messiah and the rebuilding of the Temple.” Rebuilding—pay attention, rebuilding—of the Temple. “Rebuilding,” not “building”: the rebuilding of the Temple.
Fifth, they await the Messiah, having rejected Christ. And sixth, the rebuilding of the Temple. Does none of this say anything to you? It does say something; it certainly does. You do not want us to call these things proofs? I agree. But all this should certainly make us watchful. The Lord Himself told us to discern the times, and He rebuked His contemporaries because they did not discern the times concerning Christ’s first coming.
And that is why disaster overtook them. He told them plainly—very plainly: “Hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the sky.” You know the saying. We look at the crescent moon and see it standing upright, and we say, “Is it the captain who sleeps, or the shepherd?” We will have fair weather. That is what it means to “discern the face of the sky”: by the clouds, the thermometer, and the barometer. But why do you not study the face of history? Why do you not discern the times—why do you not study history? That is what the Lord said, and He called them hypocrites. The Fathers say the same. Saint Ignatius of Antioch says it clearly.
As he was traveling to Rome to suffer martyrdom, he wrote a letter to Saint Polycarp, saying, “Study the times diligently.” Notice that word “diligently”: study the times thoroughly and in depth. “And await Him who is expected”—wait for the One whom we await, the Messiah, at His Second Coming. If you wish, this is the meaning of the watchfulness repeatedly emphasized by the Lord throughout the New Testament. “Keep watch, keep watch.” How many times did the Lord say it! And if this watchfulness—this eschatological watchfulness of Christians—had been maintained throughout the centuries, the Church of Christ would never have suffered...
spiritual decline. But because this eschatological vision is lacking, we have fallen asleep.
And the final blow—the coup de grâce aimed at truly destroying the Church—comes when we try to turn her into a culture or a social system. Then we say that we must build a society because the Kingdom of God is here on earth, so that we may eat well and drink well. How many times have I said this! The moment we turn Christianity—the Church—into a culture and a social system, we lose our eschatological horizon. We lose it. And when someone comes and cries out to us—when certain voices, voices in the wilderness, “the voice of one crying in the wilderness,” proclaim that the times are near, that the end of history is near, that Christianity cannot become an established system and the Church cannot stagnate within the confines of culture—then those people are called fanatics. They are dismissed as troublesome and therefore useless. And who listens to them?
They are supposedly coming to frighten the world, to frighten the people. Long ago, the Anglican Church proclaimed the death of Satan. In sermons and writings, it is said that we must not frighten the world—the people who bear the name of Christ—by telling them that Satan exists. And now we are already holding the funeral of this eschatological vision as well. What remains? When at last we cry out, an uninformed people becomes afraid—or rather, suffers from phobias. They do not have the fear of God; they have phobias, because the matter has not been set before them properly. And sadly, an uninformed people is left
with nothing but phobias. And what do we do? We wonder how we will live when the Antichrist comes and there is no currency because it has been abolished. And since we will supposedly have to go shopping with 666 on our hand, should we not stock our homes with food? My dear friends, these are foolish things. They are foolish, panicked solutions that reveal nothing but the depth of our ignorance and the depth of our fears. What, then, remains for us? To be spiritual people who keep watch. Nothing else. Spiritual people who keep watch. And now I shall answer the example I gave.
You speak of the Book of Revelation! It says that God nourishes the Church. Who is the woman seen in that vision? God nourishes her for three and a half years, for as long as the Antichrist’s reign lasts. In other words, the faithful will have something to eat. Why do we not look at the earlier historical example? God nourished His people in the wilderness with manna—not for three and a half years, but for forty years. Is God unable to send down manna once again? Is God unable to do so when He promises that this woman, the Church, will be nourished by God in the wilderness? We think so only because, as I have told you, we are ignorant.
Those who are ignorant do not possess the right and fruitful fear of God. Instead, they are ruled by phobias and seek panicked and foolish solutions. But, my dear friends, our time is over, and we see that all these things are realities. They are so real that, just as there were prophecies concerning Christ’s first coming into the world and He came, so there are prophecies concerning His Second Coming, and He will come again. In the same way, there are prophecies concerning the one who is to come—the culmination and fruit of a world that has fallen into apostasy—who will come to hinder the work of Christ. All these things, therefore, are realities, and we must regard them with the utmost, utmost seriousness.

Αντιλαμβάνεστε, αυτόν και θα δεχθούν. Έχουν περάσει 1.900 χρόνια από τότε που ο ναός γκρεμίστηκε. Από τον ναό δεν υπάρχει τίποτε, αγαπητοί, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα, ούτε μια πέτρα. Τίποτα δεν υπάρχει. Ό,τι σώζεται είναι —μήπως και από φωτογραφίες, δεν είναι ανάγκη να πάτε στον λεγόμενο τόπο— ό,τι σώζεται είναι μόνο ένα κομμάτι από το δυτικό τείχος. Τίποτα. Αυτό είναι όλο. Αλλά από τον ναό τίποτα. Και τι λέει εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλλος; Λέγει ότι δεν θα γκρεμίσει τον περίβολο, αλλά θα γκρεμίσει ό,τι υπάρχει από τον ναό τον παλιό. Γιατί;
Πρέπει να τα χαλάσει. Πώς θέλετε αυτό να γίνει; Σημειώστε ότι το 350 μετά Χριστόν, που ομιλεί και γράφει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, ο ναός δεν υπήρχε. Αλλά δεν υπήρχε όμως και το τέμενος του Ομάρ, διότι τότε απλώς υπήρχαν ερείπια. Τίποτα άλλο δεν υπήρχε, μόνον ερείπια του ναού του παλαιού υπήρχαν. Όμως ο Άγιος Κύριλλος σημειώνει ότι, άμα θα δεις να οικοδομείται ο ναός, τότε θα έρθει ο Αντίχριστος. Είναι ή θα είναι παρών. Αλλά ο ναός αυτός —τη μεγάλη σας απορία— γιατί δεν χτίστηκε μέχρι σήμερα;
Η οριστική δε, ή θα λέγαμε η χαριστική βολή, εκείνου που έπρεπε να καταστρέψει πραγματικά την Εκκλησία, είναι όταν θέλουμε να την κάνουμε πολιτισμό ή κοινωνικό καθεστώς. Οπότε λέμε να κάνουμε μια κοινωνία, διότι η Βασιλεία του Θεού είναι επί της γης. Να φάμε καλά και να πιούμε καλά. Πόσες φορές θα τα έχω πει! Απ’ τη στιγμή που κάνουμε τον Χριστιανισμό, την Εκκλησία, πολιτισμό και κοινωνικό καθεστώς, εχάσαμε αυτόν τον εσχατολογικό μας ορίζοντα. Τον εχάσαμε. Κι όταν έρθει κάποιος και μας φωνάξει, κάποιες φωνές, φωνές εν ερήμω, «φωνή βοώντος εν τη ερήμω», και φωνάξουν αυτές οι φωνές ότι οι καιροί είναι κοντά, το τέλος της ιστορίας είναι κοντά, ο Χριστιανισμός δεν μπορεί να γίνεται καθεστώς, η Εκκλησία δεν μπορεί να τελματώνεται μέσα σε πολιτιστικές διαστάσεις, τότε αυτοί λέγονται φανατικοί, τότε αυτοί είναι άχρηστοι, δύστροποι και συνεπώς άχρηστοι. Και ποιος τους ακούει;
