Summary
The Antichrist must be understood within the larger hope of Christ’s Second Coming, the resurrection of the dead, and the renewal of creation. Prophetic symbols can have preliminary historical fulfillments, but their complete meaning becomes clear only when the events themselves arrive. God will ultimately remove the Antichrist’s authority, destroy him, and grant the everlasting kingdom to the saints of the Most High.

By way of introduction, my beloved!
We are in the middle of paragraph 13 of the fifteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. The entire lecture concerns the Antichrist—not only the Antichrist, but also the Second Coming of Christ and the renewal of the whole creation. At present, however, we have reached the section concerning the Antichrist, which has been the subject of our latest talks. Of course, the subject is set within its proper framework. It is not isolated from everything else, as references to the person of the Antichrist so often are in our time.
The subject is not being presented properly, and this inevitably causes confusion. It must be placed within a framework: the framework of the Second Coming of Christ. In the end, that is where the emphasis must fall. Let us not forget it: that is where the emphasis must always fall. It cannot fall upon the person of the Antichrist. That should be obvious. But because the true focus—the person of Christ and the fact that He is coming again—is absent, troubling situations arise, and there is even a danger that the whole subject of the Antichrist will be pushed aside.
That would cause great harm. When people see that many are becoming fearful or suffering from other such reactions, they will begin to say, “This is nothing, and that is nothing either.” And this certainly benefits the cause of the Antichrist—and not a little. The devil is the one who benefits. This must not happen. We must therefore speak the truth, but the truth does not stand in isolation. It belongs within a broader framework: the Second Coming of Christ, the Resurrection of the Dead, and the renewal of the whole creation. Only then can we speak properly about the Antichrist. So, when I know that...
the windows of my house are shut, and someone outside is threatening to break through the shutters or force open the door and enter, but I have called the police, I am not overcome with fear that this person will harm me. I know that by the time he breaks down the door, the police will have arrived. What does this mean? It means that if I see the Antichrist coming, I also know that Christ is coming. I have only to endure those three and a half years, and Christ will deliver me, while the Antichrist will go down to Hades, to Hell. But if I do not see the Resurrection of the Dead and do not see the coming of Christ, then tell me: what do I see? I see only the enemy.
I see only the one forcing open my door, and I know that help is coming from nowhere. Would I not then be seized by terror and driven out of my mind? This is why I told you that the subject must be placed within its true and proper setting. At the beginning of paragraph 13, we said that Saint Cyril is not speaking idly or inventing things merely to have something to say. He speaks of things written in the Word of God. He brings forward the Word of God, grounding his teaching and proofs in it, and he referred to Daniel.
Daniel saw that vision within the region of the Mediterranean Sea, and it revealed that the Antichrist would come in the days of the Fourth Beast. I will explain it briefly. We spoke about it last time, but let us review it so that we can connect it with what follows, because the subject has a continuous thread. The Prophet Daniel sees a fearful and terrifying vision. This vision, recorded in the seventh chapter, begins as follows: “I looked, and behold, I saw the Great Sea.”
In Hebrew literature, we have what is called the Small Sea and the Great Sea. The Dead Sea is called the Small Sea, while the Mediterranean is called the Great Sea. Thus, in his vision, Daniel sees the Mediterranean Sea. There, he says, four winds began to blow: north, south, east, and west. They stirred up the sea, and from its turbulence four beasts arose. Of course, they did not arise together, but one after another.
I said last time—and there is no harm in saying it again—that the Mediterranean Sea...
The region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea—that is, the countries bordering it—is of world-historical importance. Historically, it is the most important sea in all of world history. It was so, it is so, and it will remain so until the Last Things (eschata). As I told you, it is not the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, or the Pacific; nor is it Japan, America, or Australia. It is the Mediterranean Sea. Why? Because the greatest and most astonishing events in world history have taken place in the lands surrounding the Mediterranean...
events that shaped world history and world civilisation. Do not forget this. Where did what is now called Western civilisation begin? At the Mediterranean Sea—that is, in the Mediterranean region. Greece belongs to the Mediterranean, and Europe also belongs to the Mediterranean world. European civilisation and Greek civilisation began here. Whatever others accomplished later had its starting point here, at the Mediterranean Sea. The Saviour of the world, Christ, was born in Palestine, on the Mediterranean. Palestine is a Mediterranean land. And it is in this region that the Antichrist will act.
I have mentioned events connected with the salvation of man. But if you wish to consider events belonging to world history as well, you will find them here, in the Mediterranean region. Daniel says that there were four beasts, appearing one after another. They were monstrous, fantastic creatures. Concerning the first, for example, he says, “I saw something like a lion with two wings.” There is no such thing as a winged lion. Then came something like a bear. After that, he says, came something like a leopard with four wings. No such animals exist—with iron teeth and other strange features. Naturally, they do not exist in reality. We would therefore call these beasts mythical or fantastic.
Yet they have a basis in nature: one was like a lion, another like a leopard, and so forth. When Daniel saw these beasts, each was more terrifying than the one before it. One comes and disappears; then another comes and disappears; then the third gives way to the fourth. All the events that concern us take place during the time of the Fourth Beast. They concern not only the present of Daniel’s own time, but also our present—or, more precisely, what was still future for us, as people of the twentieth century.
Daniel asked for an interpretation, and, as Saint Cyril says, it was given to him by the Archangel Gabriel. Here I should offer one clarification: in this particular passage, the angel is not identified as the Archangel Gabriel. Yet Saint Cyril is not mistaken, as I shall explain. In the vision of the seventh chapter, an angel is mentioned who interprets it for Daniel, but his name is not given. In Daniel’s next vision, concerning the battle between the ram and the goat—the conflict between the Medo-Persian dynasty and the Greek, Macedonian dynasty of Alexander the Great, represented by the goat...
Let me make a brief digression. There are ancient coins depicting Alexander the Great with horns beside his head. Near his ear, you can see a horn. When Alexander the Great came to conquer Palestine, the high priest told him that Daniel had written about him and had prophesied that he would be victorious. Alexander therefore did not harm the Jews, although one of his generals—I do not remember which one—said to him, “Kill them.” He meant the high priest and the entire company that had come in great numbers to meet him. Alexander was flattered by the thought that he might be the one who had been prophesied.
This, then, is not without significance. He is the goat in Daniel’s vision. But let me close this digression. In that vision, the Archangel Gabriel appears and explains its meaning to Daniel. Saint Cyril is not mistaken; the name is simply not written there. I am only being precise: it is not written in the seventh chapter of Daniel. Nevertheless, Saint Cyril is not mistaken in identifying the angel in the first vision also as the Archangel Gabriel. I shall read Saint Cyril’s words very quickly, and afterward I will explain some of what he writes: “Then Gabriel, interpreting it, says...”
I read this to you last time. He is speaking of these beasts, which, as the Fathers of the Church have handed down to us, represent nothing other than “the kingdom of the Assyrians; the second, that of the Medes together with the Persians; after these, the third, that of the Macedonians; and the fourth kingdom is that of the Romans.” What are these? They are four dynasties, four great empires. Who are the first? Here he calls them the Assyrians. We would say that they are the... You see, the Assyrians no longer existed when Daniel saw the vision. Yet this is not a mistake either. We must always explain such matters, because...
we often encounter difficulties in interpretation. It is well known that the Babylonians defeated the Assyrians after a struggle that lasted nearly a thousand years. At times the Assyrians prevailed, and at other times the Babylonians. They were rivals. In the end, the Assyrians were decisively defeated by the Babylonians. They were absorbed by other peoples and disappeared from history. There are no Assyrians today. Consequently, when Daniel sees his vision, the Assyrians no longer exist. We would therefore say “the Babylonians.” Yet it amounts to the same thing, because they belong to one stock. I repeat: both the Assyrians and the Babylonians are Semites.
They are descended from the line of Shem; they are Semites. So there is no error here either. For the sake of brevity, Saint Cyril simply uses the broader name “Assyrians,” though he is referring to the Babylonians. Note also that Nebuchadnezzar had seen a corresponding vision with the same meaning. He was now emperor of Babylon, ruling a vast territory that extended as far as Egypt. Daniel interpreted the vision for him. The first beast—forgive me—it was not a beast, but a statue made of four materials: gold...
Bronze.
Bronze, iron. Forgive me: gold, silver, bronze, iron. And when Daniel interprets for Nebuchadnezzar this vision that Nebuchadnezzar himself had seen—for that is precisely the point: he had to be the one who saw it; for if Daniel had said to him, “You know, I had a vision,” who would have believed Daniel?—he tells him: “O king, the gold—that is, the head of gold—is your empire, because of its riches. After you, another empire will arise. After that will come a third empire. Then a fourth empire will arise, and during the time of the fourth empire...”
This is what will happen. Notice something remarkable. We have two visions with the same content. In the first vision, the central figure is the Messiah, Christ, while in Daniel’s second vision, the central figure is the Antichrist. In the first vision, where the Messiah is central, the one who receives the vision is Nebuchadnezzar, whereas in the second it is Daniel. This is very significant. Daniel then tells him, when Nebuchadnezzar sees...
The statue’s iron legs represent the Roman Empire, which did not yet exist. Rome, of course, was founded in the eighth century BC, around 750–761 BC. But the Romans had not yet appeared on the stage of history—not at all. It is an astonishing thing. At that time, the East held sway. Then, he says, during the Fourth Empire—which, of course, he does not call the Roman Empire—the Kingdom will come: a Fifth Kingdom, the Kingdom of God. For he sees, from a nearby unhewn mountain—which is a type of the Theotokos (God-bearer)—...
The mountain is unhewn because the Theotokos is a Virgin. From it, “a stone was cut out without the hand of man,” signifying that a man would be born of the Virgin without natural human intervention—that is, without a human father. Here Daniel already has Isaiah in mind. Isaiah lived in the eighth century BC, and Daniel in the fifth century BC. “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive”—that is, she shall become pregnant—“and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel.” This is a prophetic name: God is with us.
He who was to come would be God among men. And this stone came, as Nebuchadnezzar saw it, hurtling down. It broke away from the mountain by itself, came crashing against the iron feet of that magnificent statue—which represent the Roman Empire—and shattered the entire statue. It ground it to powder and reduced it to chaff; then the wind swept the chaff away, and nothing remained. And in place of the statue, this stone began to grow, the...
cut loose without human hands, grew and became a mountain, and it covered the earth. “O king,” Daniel tells him, “this is the Kingdom of God, which will come during the Fourth Empire. You are the first empire; and then the Kingdom of God will bring all the empires to an end and prevail upon the earth.” Majestic—astonishing. There is the vision. That is the first one. The other is the vision of the four beasts in the Mediterranean Sea. While the first spoke of the Messiah, this one, which we shall now examine and which Saint Cyril refers to...
It refers to the Antichrist. Daniel himself saw this vision. What, then, is the first kingdom? It is the Assyrian kingdom, that is, the Babylonian. Next comes “the kingdom of the Medes and Persians together,” the Medo-Persian kingdom. Then comes “the third kingdom, that of the Macedonians,” as the Fathers of our Church interpret it. After this vision, in which the Antichrist appears, Daniel saw another vision concerning the triumph of the Third Empire over the Second, through the clash between the goat and the ram that I mentioned earlier. “And the fourth kingdom is that of the Romans.”
The Roman Empire. The Macedonian Empire of Alexander the Great was conquered by the Romans. And now we read: “Then Gabriel, continuing his interpretation, says...” The Archangel Gabriel then explains as follows: “Its ten horns are ten kings who shall arise, and after them another king shall arise, who will surpass in wickedness all who came before him—not only the ten, but all his predecessors. And he shall humble three kings.” This means that, of the first ten kings, the eleventh will humble three, so that he himself will reign as the eighth.
He blasphemes. “He shall speak words against the Most High,” he says. This man is blasphemous and lawless; he does not inherit the kingdom from his fathers, but seizes power through sorcery. But to make myself clearer—or rather, to make Saint Cyril’s meaning clearer—allow me, my beloved, to turn to this vision of Daniel: the wondrous Daniel, the “man of desires,” as God Himself calls him. The entire seventh chapter is devoted to this vision. I shall read to you only the part concerning this Beast with the ten horns.
For he says: The first Beast was like this, the second like that, and the third like this—the Babylonian Empire, the Medo-Persian Empire, and the Macedonian Empire. The fourth was a fearsome Beast. Whatever it wished, he says, it devoured; and whatever it did not wish to devour, it trampled underfoot, with iron teeth and iron feet. It had four wings, signifying the speed of the Romans. You know, by means of the Via Egnatia they could travel from Rome as far as the depths of Persia. It was the most highly organized empire, in its military, its road network, and its system of law.
The renowned Roman law. It truly was a fearsome empire of iron. There, he says, I saw ten kings—forgive me, forgive me, forgive me—this Beast had ten horns, and an eleventh horn sprang up as well. I am now reading from Daniel, chapter 7, verse 20.
“I was seeking,” he says, “an explanation of the matter,” and the angel explains it to me. “And concerning its horns”—or let me read you the translation directly. This is Joel Giannakopoulos’s translation: “I sought specific information concerning the ten horns upon its head, and especially concerning that other horn which grew up among the ten and crushed three of them. Yes, that horn which had eyes”—eyes upon the horn—“and a mouth speaking proud words, and whose overall appearance was more imposing than that of the other horns.”
“I watched carefully and saw that this horn was waging war against the saints of God and was overcoming them, until the Ancient of Days came and gave victory to the saints of the Most High. Then the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom. So he said to me: ‘The fourth Beast is a fourth kingdom upon the earth. It will surpass all the other kingdoms; it will destroy the whole earth, crushing it and trampling it underfoot. The ten horns of this Beast are ten kings.’”
“who will appear. After them another will appear, who will surpass”—that is, an eleventh—“who will surpass all his predecessors in evil and destructive deeds, and he will subdue three kings.” Thus, the eleventh horn, which has eyes and a mouth, will speak in this way. You see, the horn is a symbol of power; that is why these things are portrayed as horns. The horn is a symbol of power. In animals, where does their strength lie? In the horn. In an ox—or in any horned animal—its strength lies there. With its horn it defends itself; with its horn it fights. That is why these powers, these authorities, these kingdoms, are described and portrayed here as horns.
Then, after them, another will appear, who will surpass all those before him in evil and destructive deeds, and he will subdue three kings. He will utter proud words against God Most High, wear down the saints of God Most High, and plot to change the established order.
“of nature and of the laws of God.” That is the end.
I continue, my beloved, reading from Daniel in translation: “And he”—this eleventh horn—“will devise a plan to change the order of nature and the laws of God. But this power will be given to him for one year, two years, and half a year. Then the court of God will sit, and the angels of God will take away his authority; they will utterly destroy him and bring him to nothing. Afterward, the kingdom, the authority, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the saints of the Most High God.”
“His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. All the other dominions will serve him and obey him. Here the account comes to an end. I, Daniel, set my name to this. My thoughts greatly troubled me for a long time, and the appearance of my face changed. Nevertheless, I carefully kept these words in my heart.” Daniel’s words are truly so fearful. How could he not be terrified by what he had seen? So, my beloved, I have read to you from the Prophet Daniel, and we have seen what this eleventh horn is.
Taking up the same subject, Saint Cyril says that this occurs during the Roman Empire. Here there is a difficulty. It is this: in every prophecy there will always be the question, “Is this being fulfilled now, or both now and later?” In essence, this is not a difficulty but part of the richness of prophecy, because it gives the prophecy a wider scope. He says that the ten horns are ten kings. In the preceding paragraph, the twelfth, listen to what Saint Cyril says: “Ten kings shall arise.”
“Kings of the Romans arise together, perhaps in different places, but reigning during the same period.” It is well known that the Roman Empire appointed kings over peoples it had conquered—local kings, we might call them—who were subject to Rome and paid tribute to it. I remind you of Herod in Palestine. Herod, an Idumean, was installed as king; he practically begged Rome for his kingdom. He was undoubtedly a tributary subject, as were all the people, and he was a petty king, a petty tyrant ruling on Rome’s behalf.
Do not forget this. This is what Saint Cyril means here: local kings. Since they reign together, could there possibly be ten kings ruling in Rome at the same time? That is unthinkable. Therefore, he says, while these ten kings are reigning, an eleventh will appear. This eleventh king will trample down three of them and make them subject to himself—but no, he will not merely make them subject; he will destroy them. The other seven he will make subject to himself. So although he is the eleventh, he now becomes the eighth in order, because the seven remain and the three are gone.
So he is the eleventh, yet seven plus one makes eight. He is the eighth. “In any event, he reigns as the eighth.” What, then, is the difficulty I mentioned? It is this: since this eighth king, or the eleventh, is the Antichrist, when will he come? During the Roman Empire? Here lies the difficulty. Here, my dear friends, what Saint Irenaeus says will once again apply, as Saint Andrew of Caesarea later repeated: some things constitute a type pointing to the prototype, while the prototype itself is placed at an unspecified time.
And only when the events themselves arrive will their meaning be revealed to those who have a heart filled with nepsis, with watchfulness—that is, to spiritual people. More specifically, the number ten is first of all symbolic. It does not necessarily mean ten kings, but simply a multitude of successive kings. One of them, Nero for example, certainly became a figure who surpassed the kings and emperors before him. Some even went so far as to suggest that the number 666
belonged to Nero. This question is not new. Saint Hippolytus and other Fathers already tried to interpret it in this way. But it did not work; the numbers did not add up. It is the familiar Procrustean method: stretch a little here and cut a little there to make everything fit. But it did not fit. It will all become clear when its appointed time comes, for the simple reason that Nero was not the Antichrist. He was a type of the Antichrist. In the same way, in another of Daniel’s wondrous prophecies, Daniel portrays Antiochus IV Epiphanes as the Antichrist. Yet he was not the Antichrist himself, the prototype, but
a type of the Antichrist. If, then, we now take Antiochus and try to make everything fit him, will his name produce 666? It is true that Antiochus tormented the people of God. It is also true that the Roman emperor Nero tormented the Christians. But that does not settle the matter, simply because the prophecy refers to the type and not to the prototype. Nevertheless, the description Saint Cyril gives below goes beyond the antitype as seen in both Antiochus and Nero—or, we might suppose, in some other king or emperor of Rome. It goes far beyond them, because what follows in the passage I read to you—thank you—does not fit Antiochus, Nero, Diocletian, or any other terrible persecutor of the Christians you might name. It does not fit them, because the prototype person surpasses all his types. Who will this be? He has not yet come. But his characteristics are given to us. So naturally, I will not dwell any longer on the ten kings. That is not where our attention belongs, but rather on the conduct of this dreadful horn. This man, it says, “will speak blasphemous words against the Most High.”
We might say that no one in history has ever been as blasphemous as the Antichrist will be. No one. There have been emperors and kings who declared themselves gods. They deified themselves. If you like, nearly all the Roman emperors, to a greater or lesser degree, deified themselves. The Antichrist will also deify himself. This is why the Roman emperors are types of the Antichrist. That is the reason. And what about Nebuchadnezzar? All of them wanted, to one degree or another, to deify themselves. But now, my dear friends, the Antichrist will not regard himself merely as one god among many. An emperor might deify himself while still accepting other gods. He accepted Zeus, for example. He accepted Demeter, Isis, Osiris, and the deities that had already made their way into Rome from the East and from Africa. That Pantheon contained thousands of gods. No emperor ever tried to abolish those gods. He simply added himself to their number. But the Antichrist will abolish everything called an object of worship or God, as the Apostle Paul says in his Epistle to the Thessalonians,
and he will say, “I am God; there is no other God.” Tell me, then: does the prototype surpass its types? Unquestionably. You can see it very clearly. What, then, is the highest blasphemy? When a man proclaims himself to be God, he is a blasphemer. We must not forget that. This is the highest blasphemy. But when he says, “There is no God except me,” what will this impious man say? “I alone am God.” Do you not think this is the greatest blasphemy that could ever be uttered? My dear friends, forgive me for saying this, but if Christ were not true,
He would have uttered the greatest blasphemy the ages had ever heard. For He said, “I and the Father are one.” And, as John the Evangelist says, “Without Him nothing was made that was made.” Nothing that exists came into being without God the Word (Logos), and so forth. This is a fearful claim. That is why the high priest said that He had blasphemed, and a blasphemer was condemned to death. Do you understand? But Christ was not a blasphemer, because He spoke the truth, because He was God. And He proved it, as I explained to you in our study of the Acts of the Apostles: He proved it through His Resurrection and through Pentecost. If He had been a blasphemer,
He would have been in the deepest regions of Hades, and the Holy Spirit would not have come in the name of Jesus Christ. This is the great truth; this is it. Therefore, what Christ said was true. But what the Antichrist will say will not be true. It will be blasphemy—the greatest blasphemy ever heard. He will deify himself and abolish every other god that has ever appeared in history. True or false, he will abolish every religion—all of them, every one—and say, “I am God.” And he will be lawless. In Daniel you heard a very important point, which I will explain to you.
It says here that he will abolish laws and appointed times. This means nothing other than that he will abolish them. The law belongs to God, while the other refers to nature. Even natural realities, things belonging to the created order itself, will be swept aside. How will this happen? We will speak about that another time. We have discussed it before, so let us not dwell on it now. Pay attention: he will be lawless. “He will not receive the kingdom from his fathers.” In other words, he will not inherit royal authority through a line of succession. It will not be a hereditary kingdom.
He will not receive a kingdom through what we might call a hereditary claim. No. Rather, “he will seize the power to rule through sorcery.” He will seize authority by magical means, through demonic works, because he will be the perfect instrument of Satan. “And who is this man, and by what power will he do these things?” We now come to paragraph fourteen. “Explain it to us, O Paul.” Saint Cyril is saying, “Tell us, Paul, who this man is and by what power he will do these things.” “Whose coming,” he says. Who says this? Who is speaking? Paul. And where does he say it? In 2 Thessalonians 2:9: “Whose coming”—that is, the Antichrist’s coming—“is according to the working of Satan.” Pay attention: according to the working of Satan. This means, first of all, that he will not be Satan himself. Therefore, he will not be a spirit made flesh, but a human being, one hundred percent.
Pay attention: a human being. There will be no incarnation of Satan. Satan cannot truly become incarnate. If he sometimes assumes various forms—the form of a man, an angel, or an animal—this is merely a deception before human eyes.
Spirits cannot become incarnate, nor can angels—neither angels nor Satan. When the Archangel Gabriel appears to the Theotokos, he is not a man; he merely appears in human form. Remember the Archangel Raphael when he appeared to Tobit and Tobias. He says, “You thought I was a man, but I was not. You thought I was eating, but I was not.” Thus incarnation belongs—and I have told you this before—as the unique prerogative of the One who can bring it about: the Creator, Jesus Christ. This is why Christ said after His Resurrection, “Come and touch Me,” showing that He was not a spirit, that is, a phantom.
“I am not something you merely imagine to be Me. It is truly I!” Thus the devil cannot become incarnate. He will, however, act through one who has taken flesh, and that man will be the Antichrist. Therefore, the Antichrist will act according to the working of Satan. Satan will drive him; he will be a human being moved entirely by Satan, and he will do all that he does under Satan’s power. What will he do? Whatever he does will be “with all power, signs, and lying wonders.” He will perform terrifying miracles, but they will be false. To help you understand this, I will read the passage.
“This signifies that Satan will use that man as his instrument.” That is what Saint Cyril says, indicating, as the divine Paul does, that the devil will use him as an instrument. “He will use him as an instrument, acting personally through him”—the devil himself acting through the Antichrist. “For the devil knows that there will no longer be any postponement of his judgment.” The devil knows he has no time left. He has already lost the game. “No longer through his servants, as is his custom”—as he usually acts through the demons and through other people who serve him—“but from then on he himself will wage war more openly.” The devil himself now enters the battle, just as, my dear friends,
Constantine Palaiologos did. When he saw that the battle was lost, what did he do? He fought as a soldier. He was no longer the emperor giving orders. He saw the slaughter unfolding. How did he fight? He himself fought hand to hand. So too here, the devil himself will finally enter the battle, using the Antichrist as his instrument. “With all power, signs, and lying wonders. For the father of lies”—that is, the devil—“will create deceptive illusions, so that the multitudes will think they see a dead man being raised, though he has not been raised; the lame walking and the blind recovering their sight, though no healing has taken place.” The Apocalypse also speaks of these things. Do you know how it describes this?
It says that the Beast had seven heads, and one of its heads appeared to have died, but afterward it seemed to come back to life. I explained this to you during our series of talks on the Apocalypse. Either the Antichrist will appear to die and rise again, or he will make it seem that one of his instruments—one of his own followers—has died and that he is now raising him. But these things will be false. To give you an idea, let me say that magic can accomplish many illusions. At this very moment, for example, I might tell you to look at this watch. You can see it right here.
You look at it again. Then someone says, “Excuse me, sir, please check your pocket.” The man reaches in and pulls the watch out of his pocket. How did it get there? This is a familiar trick; you know such things. How did the watch get into that gentleman’s pocket? Or perhaps you see the watch placed inside a hat, and then the magician takes a pestle and smashes it to pieces. Afterward he gathers the pieces and presents the watch to you whole again. Or he produces doves from somewhere, releases them, and the whole place fills with doves. They are not even real doves. But you may ask, “Can so many eyes be deceived?” These things do happen. Many of you have probably seen such displays. They are things that happen, and, if you like, all three examples I have just given
are forms of magic or sleight of hand. How much more convincing, then, might works produced through sorcery appear? What is so astonishing about that? What is astonishing? The devil, acting through the Antichrist, will therefore employ all these magical arts, methods, and devices to deceive people and to prove that he is the awaited Messiah. I have told you that Saint Augustine calls the Antichrist the ape of Christ. He tries to imitate everything Christ did, in order to prove that he himself is now the Messiah. And now we come to paragraph fifteen. Pay attention here and hold on to two very important points.
“Again he says, ‘the one who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship.’” Again, who says this? The Apostle Paul. “The one who opposes and exalts himself.” The one who opposes is the Antichrist, the one who stands against Christ. The one who exalts himself is the one whose pride rises above every other pride. “Above every so-called god or object of worship,” as the Apostle Paul says. He considers himself God, standing above everything that has ever been called a god or regarded as worthy of worship throughout history. “Above every god—but does the Antichrist perhaps hate idols?” In other words, will the Antichrist present himself as one who hates idols?
He will turn against idolatry, “so that he takes his seat in the temple of God.” He will go so far as to sit in this temple of God and there, of course, proclaim himself to be God. Pay close attention, because this gives us a sign by which to discern when the Antichrist has come. Take careful note of it. Which temple does Saint Cyril mean? What is this temple in which the Antichrist will sit? “The ruined temple of the Jews,” he says. It is the temple belonging to the Jews, which is now destroyed—that is, demolished and reduced to ruins.
That, he says, is the temple in which he will sit. “Forbid that this temple should be meant.” God forbid! He does not mean this temple. Which temple? The Church of the Resurrection, where we are now gathered—I, Cyril, and you who are listening to me, the catechumens who are about to be baptized. This was in the year 350 after Christ. The Antichrist will not come to this Church of the Resurrection, but to that other temple nearby—the Jewish Temple, the Temple of Solomon—to which he points. “Why do we say this? So that no one may think we are showing favor to ourselves. For if he comes to the Jews as Christ and wishes to be worshiped by the Jews...”
“In order to deceive them all the more, he will hold the Temple in the highest regard, giving the impression that he himself is the descendant of David who is destined to rebuild the Temple constructed by Solomon.” No, he says, it is not the church we call the Church of the Resurrection, but the Temple of Solomon. And so that no one may think we are merely favoring our own position, I tell you this: Christ came to the Jews, and they did not believe in Him; but the Antichrist will come to the Jews and rebuild their Temple for them, deceiving them into believing that he is the long-awaited Messiah. It would not serve the Antichrist’s purpose to use the Church of the Resurrection.
It is a Christian church, and the Jews would never accept a Messiah who established himself inside the Church of the Resurrection. Instead, they will look for the one who will build the Temple of the Resurrection—forgive me—the Temple of Solomon. That is where he will establish himself. This matter is very important, my dear friends, extremely important. But as we come to the end, I have something to tell you. A few days ago, someone sent me a newspaper from New York. Look carefully: it is The New York Times. What you see here covers a whole page, an entire page. It was written by Jews for Jews. And the headline reads, “After 1,900 Years.”
“Time for a Change”—it is time for a change. Do you see it? And here, my dear friends, it says, in so many words—let me quote just one sentence: “We must find positive ways to express our faith in the coming Messiah, who will rebuild the Temple of Solomon.” But because this matter is so important, I will ask someone who knows English, Mr. Riglese, to translate the whole article for us, and I will read his translation to you next Monday. God willing, we will have a talk on the feast of Saint Demetrios. May the Lord bless you.

ο Κωνσταντίνος Παλαιολόγος. Όταν είδε ότι χάνεται η μάχη, τι έκανε; Πολεμούσε σαν στρατιώτης. Δεν ήταν ο αυτοκράτωρ που δίνει διαταγές. Βλέπει ότι έγινε μακελειό. Πώς πολεμάει; Ο ίδιος, στήθος με στήθος. Έτσι και εδώ πέφτει στη μάχη πλέον αυτός ο ίδιος ο διάβολος, χρησιμοποιώντας τον Αντίχριστον ως όργανό του. «Ἐν πάσῃ δὲ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασι ψεύδους· ὁ γὰρ πατὴρ τοῦ ψεύδους», ήτοι ο διάβολος, «τὰ τοῦ ψεύδους ἔργα φαντασιοκοπήσει, ἵνα τὰ πλήθη νομίσῃ θεωρεῖν νεκρὸν ἐγειρόμενον, μὴ ἐγειρόμενον, καὶ χωλοὺς περιπατοῦντας καὶ τυφλοὺς ἀναβλέποντας, μὴ γενομένης θεραπείας». Αυτά τα αναφέρει και το βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως. Ξέρετε πώς το λέγει αυτό;
Προσέξτε, είναι The New York Times.
«Καιρός για μια αλλαγή», it is time for a change, είναι καιρός για μια αλλαγή.
