Summary

Saint Cyril’s Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture places the Antichrist within the wider Orthodox vision of Christ’s Second Coming, the resurrection of the dead, and the renewal of creation. The Antichrist will first counterfeit gentleness, wisdom, philanthropy, and miraculous power before revealing extreme lawlessness and inhumanity. After three and a half years, Jesus Christ will effortlessly end the Antichrist’s activity by the power of His word and consign him to Gehenna at the glorious Second Coming.

My beloved, we are still in Saint Cyril’s Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture, paragraph twelve. I remind you that in this catechesis Saint Cyril speaks about the Last Things, the eschata. These include the coming of the Antichrist, Christ’s Second Coming, and the transformation of the universe. Everything is made new; everything is renewed. This is the Resurrection of the Dead and the Renewal of Creation. These are called eschatological matters.

They concern the eschata—that is, the last things, since eschaton means “last”—or the final events of history. You can therefore see that they are extremely important. Until recently, there was something that might have been regarded as a weakness

in our Church—that is, in the Orthodox Church—and, we might add, among the heterodox as well: believers remained within a field of vision that did not extend beyond their own age. Perhaps even to this day, spirituality has remained confined within those limits.

And it was only natural that spirituality should suffer, because spirituality is not nourished by the present alone. Above all, it is nourished by contemplating the whole course of history, from the creation of the world and of mankind to the end of history and the coming of the Kingdom. In every age, therefore, the believer must look back into the past. That is why the history of creation, the history of mankind, and the Fall are so important. You will have noticed how often I refer to our first parents, because there is so much that we can understand from them. For we cannot understand salvation

or the form that salvation takes unless we know where we began, the nature and full extent of our Fall, and also where we are going in the Last Things. No one can ever bear the present unless he also looks toward the future. If a student wishes to earn the highest marks, he must look forward to an excellent degree; through that degree, to a good profession; and through that profession, to a distinguished career, and so forth.

He looks forward to an honored position, and so on. What nourishes the student’s effort to excel? A future—a bright future. And what nourishes my Christian, so that he may stand firm, neither lose his way nor betray it? What else but a glorious future? He will reach it by passing between the clashing rocks—that is, through the temptations that confront him and reach their culmination in the days of the Antichrist—until at last he beholds the divine-human countenance of Christ, the God-Man. That is why the Lord said, “When you see all these things beginning to happen, then…”

“Lift up your heads toward heaven, for your redemption draws near.” Thus, the Christian bears the burden of the present because he looks toward the glory of the future. Is that not perfectly natural? I gave you the example of the student. If this horizon of the future—this eschatological vision—is absent, is it not perfectly natural that withering, stagnation, paralysis, and decay should follow? This is why, in our time, when the question of the Antichrist began to arise on a worldwide scale,

it disturbed those stagnant waters, and people who had never shown any interest began asking, “What is happening? What is happening?” But there is a danger here. First, we must recognize the value of this contemplation of the Last Things. We cannot live as we should without such an eschatological vision. Yet there is also a danger: if we have not been spiritually nourished, and certain eschatological events merely begin pressing upon us without our lives being changed, then we will either fall into fear

or adopt a distorted spirituality, following a false spiritual path because we feel pressured and hurried by the thought that everything is about to end. It is like the panic that seizes a student who realizes in the final days that the school year is over and he must study for his examinations. He is filled with anxiety, fear, and nervousness. He tries to study, but cannot manage it; he cannot cover the material. This is not the proper condition of a student. The child should have studied throughout the year and learned everything he was taught. Or else, when we see that we cannot cope, we may even fall into contempt, kick everything aside, say, “Oh, who cares?” and become utterly dismissive.

These are not good responses. The appearance of eschatological events is therefore like a semantron or a trumpet sounding to awaken us. But our people must be helped to acquire true spirituality. A young man said to me—he is here, and I can see him—“I am troubled about EKAM and 666.” I told him, “Do not be troubled. What you must do—and I say this to all of you—is become more spiritual. Nothing else.” Let me explain this with an example. Imagine a student saying

—again we return to the student—“How will I obtain my degree?” A university student asks, “How will I obtain my degree?” Let us suppose he asks this at the beginning of his final year. I would answer him, “Do not be anxious at all. I will tell you what you must do. Each day, study that day’s material, and when the time comes, you will find yourself ready to sit your examinations.” That is all, my beloved. We must acquire spirituality. When we do, we will avoid all the dangers I mentioned earlier, which arise from being jolted awake before we are spiritually mature—from an immature awakening—and furthermore,

when the final hour comes, whenever that may be—whether in our lifetime, in the lifetime of our children or grandchildren, or five hundred years from now; no one knows—it may come in five years or in five hundred; no one knows—we shall be ready. The Lord told us only to be ready at all times. Let us state the problem clearly: the problem is not what is coming. The problem is I myself—whether or not I am ready. That is where the problem lies. If, then, I am preparing myself, why should I have fears and phobias? What reason is there? Do you understand? This is the right way. And now, my beloved,

Saint Cyril teaches us these things, and, as we shall see, he does not speak narrowly about the coming of the Antichrist. In our time, we have isolated this subject from spirituality as a whole, and that is why it terrifies people. Saint Cyril, however, broadens the subject and connects it with other things, such as the Resurrection of the Dead and the coming of Christ. You will see that he will soon complete this topic, perhaps after one or two more subjects; I do not know how much remains. In any event, in our book we are only three lines beyond paragraph nineteen. He speaks about Christ’s Second Coming and then about the Resurrection of the Dead, the Renewal of Creation, and the other matters he mentioned at the beginning of the catechesis.

This is the right way to present the subject. That is why we are proceeding slowly. I could have told you about the Antichrist in one or two talks and been done with it. But no. We must discuss the details that will establish us firmly in the spiritual life.

We stopped a few lines into the text—specifically at line thirty-nine on page 190, in paragraph twelve—for those of you following along with the book. There Saint Cyril gives us the Antichrist’s characteristics and says, “At first…”

“At first, the Antichrist will pretend to be gentle, learned, prudent, self-controlled, and philanthropic. Then, deceiving the Jews by signs and wonders wrought through magical delusion, he will lead them astray as though he were the Christ they were awaiting,” and so forth. We analyzed this last time: he will appear to be a man of gentleness and magnanimity, because he will be a ruler over the whole world. Take note: he will be a worldwide ruler. As I told you last time, people are now preparing great alliances. One day these alliances will disappear, because a painful conflict will take place. This is the great and final war. The Apocalypse says this, and you may remember when we were interpreting the passage.

This war is placed in Mesopotamia. Three peoples—three nationalities—will take part, represented by those three colors: red, yellow, and blue. In our time, the clues are as obvious as a cat meowing on the roof. This prophecy was not meant to be understood in some other age; in our own time, the clues are unmistakable. And what does it say? That an army of two hundred million will take part.

Well, China alone could certainly provide two hundred million—China by itself. I cannot say more, because there is always a danger that I may be mistaken about something. We were speaking with a senior military officer, and he said, “From a strategic standpoint, I cannot understand how two hundred million people could be deployed.” To begin with, the number two hundred does not appear to be conventional or symbolic, because two hundred is not used in that way in Holy Scripture. The numbers three, seven, ten, one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand, and twelve times twelve are indeed symbolic numbers, indicating a multitude or something similar. A man had one hundred sheep and lost one. The number shows the multitude in contrast with the one, and that he cares even for that one. Or again, the Lord speaks of ten virgins: five foolish and five wise.

Five and five, so that no one should try to infer what proportion of humanity will be saved or lost; the numbers rule out such speculation. Or Scripture says of a thousand, “A thousand years are as one day with the Lord.” But the number two hundred is not used symbolically. It must therefore be literal. In today’s circumstances, such a number can indeed become possible, because the whole of humanity did not number two hundred million people two thousand years ago, whereas today it does many times over. Hence the officer’s question: How can these two hundred million be deployed?

Certainly, two hundred million soldiers could never be assembled in a single camp. Perhaps the number refers to forces deployed successively throughout a war, with two hundred million being the total number mobilized: one million people are sent into battle, and afterward another million perhaps takes their place. But we cannot offer any definite picture, because every hypothesis or interpretation we propose may be mistaken. That is all. The only point I wanted to make—and this is where I stopped—is that a war comes first, and the Antichrist follows.

Why does the war come first, and the Antichrist afterward? Because after the Antichrist, as you will see—Saint Cyril says it, and so does the Apostle Paul—we have the Second Coming of Christ. Therefore, after the Second Coming of Christ... Forgive me: after the Antichrist, there is nothing else. I do not know how many times I have said this, but the view that a thousand years will intervene after the destruction of the Antichrist is millennialist and is not accepted by our Church. I underline this again and again. With the end of the Antichrist, our history comes to an end, because there the devil also comes to his end.

When, then, will the devil be released to tempt mankind, as they say concerning the thousand years? This means that the thousand years are the period through which we are passing now. This is how the Fathers of our Church interpret it. The thousand years—a conventional, round number—signify the time between the two comings of Christ. That is the thousand years: from the First Coming to the Second Coming. And when does the devil become enraged? At the very end of the Last Things—now. That is why, my beloved, we see people becoming frenzied. They have become frenzied, and I do not know what will happen next, as the devil drives people to sin to the greatest possible degree, reaching its culmination then, at the...

At this moment no one has yet entered Hell. Hell is the final act of history, just as the Kingdom of God is. Once someone enters the Kingdom of God, he will never leave it; once someone enters Hell, he will never leave it. It is finished. Since, then, both the Antichrist and the devil enter Hell, there is no further continuation of history.

When Christ says to the sinners—read the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew; it is toward the end—He says to them: “Go into eternal Hell, which was prepared for the devil and his angels.” Do you see? This is the final phase. There is nothing beyond it. Many, many passages of Holy Scripture show that there is nothing further. So do not listen to such claims. It is delusion to believe that after the Antichrist we shall eat with golden spoons in an age of peace and happiness. These are the utterly foolish things the millennialists say, displaying in their booklets and printed materials paradisal scenes with...

little guitars and animals—lambs, and whatever else—gathered around people; fruit, for these people are very fond of fruit, plenty of fruit; little rivers, streams, parks, and trees. In other words, it is a pleasure-seeking millennialism which, I scarcely need tell you, our Church condemned in the most ancient times.

Let us continue—or rather, let us begin. The Antichrist will appear generous-hearted, prudent, learned, self-controlled, and philanthropic; and, Saint Cyril says, he will perform miracles, signs, and wonders, but by magical means. Here is our new text: “Afterward, that utterly evil one, filled with every kind of wickedness, will display inhumanity and lawlessness.” “Utterly evil” means filled with many evils. Afterward, later on, he will appear and reveal lawlessness and inhumanity.

Consider these words, “inhumanity and lawlessness.” Lawlessness refers to the transgression of law. Which law? The law of God. Which law? The law of nature. Do not forget that man’s life is fundamentally governed by the law of nature. Natural man—in the good sense—is man as God made Adam and placed him within nature, subject to the laws of nature. Night comes, and I go to sleep. Morning comes, and I go to my work. But if night comes and I do not go to sleep...

and instead go to work a second job during the night, what do you think I am violating? Am I not violating a law of nature? I will undoubtedly suffer the consequences. From what? If I work eight hours during the day and eight hours at night, I am exceeding the limits of the law of nature, and I will suffer for it. Or perhaps I do not go to work at night but go out seeking entertainment. Yet I work during the day. I ask you, what am I doing here? I am exceeding the limits of nature. God has told me that I may drink water. God has told me that I may drink wine. If I drink too much wine, I ask you, will I not become ill? Will I not bring harm upon my life? What am I doing here? It is a transgression of...

What does the body do when I become drunk and vomit? What am I violating here? The laws of nature, certainly. Because man violated the laws of nature, God came to give him written laws, those which we call laws given by revelation. And He tells us: not this, but that; do this, and do that. What could be more natural than for parents to love their children? We see this even among animals. Just try approaching a mother dog to take away her puppies. Even if she is your own dog, and she knows you and you know her, see how she bares her teeth at you and tries to bite you. Why? Because she has this natural affection. Yet a human being goes and casts away his own child through abortion, committing murder in this way. Thus, what exists by nature among animals, and once existed to an even greater degree in man, God must now establish as a law given by revelation, and say—and say...

So we have the law of nature and what is called the moral law. In reality, my beloved, the moral law is nothing other than the correction of the natural law. What do you think this moral law is? It is the correction of my life, leading it from what is contrary to nature back to what is according to nature. As the troparia say so beautifully, Christ came into the world to lead us from what is contrary to nature to what is according to nature. But if you ask what is contrary to nature and what is according to nature, the matter falls into the whirlpool of subjectivism.

Each person sets different boundaries for what is contrary to nature and what is according to nature. But what is according to nature is clearly defined: it is how I came forth from the hands of God the Creator. Therefore, when Christ comes and brings me the Gospel, He restores me to what is truly according to nature. What, then, will the Antichrist do? He will arise as the man of lawlessness, or of transgression, as Saint Cyril says here. Daniel expresses this lawlessness as follows: “He will transgress times and laws.” When Daniel speaks there of “time,” he means nature.

He will be so ungodly and lawless, to the highest possible degree—a degree Saint Cyril will describe further on—that he will violate both moral laws and natural laws. But he will also be inhuman. Now, what is inhumanity? My beloved, we experience inhumanity and can form at least a general picture of it. Inhumanity is acting against everything that allows another person to live as a human being, with rights and dignity. Therefore, when I deprive him of his rights and dignity, I am inhuman.

For example, if I imprison him without cause, I am inhuman. Or consider the era of slavery in America, when people took the children of slaves. They enslaved married people—Black Africans. Remember Uncle Tom’s Cabin, those of you who have read that very, very fine book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Stowe—what was that author’s name? It was written by a woman. In the book, the child of an enslaved couple is bargained over with the owner, who intends to sell the child to someone. To take a person’s child and sell that child simply because these people are your slaves—that is inhumanity. You are tearing a child away from a family and taking the child from them. Is that what they want?

That is inhumanity—terrible inhumanity, my beloved. And so many other things constitute what we call inhumanity. Saint Cyril then says of this inhumanity and lawlessness: “He will surpass all the unjust and ungodly men who came before him, possessing a murderous, utterly cruel, implacable, and exceedingly cunning purpose against everyone, but especially against us Christians.” In other words, he will surpass every one of his predecessors—every one of them.

He will act without mercy; the Antichrist will surpass everyone. We need only glance at history and see, at least, what the Roman emperors did. One of those we know better than the others is Nero.

That wretched man would take Christians, bind them to stakes, and coat them with flammable material, making torches of them. He placed them throughout the parks, and at night they set them on fire. Human beings burned so that the parks might be illuminated, while he took his walk through a park where people were burning. It is dreadful, horrifying, incomprehensible. It is incomprehensible, my beloved. Yet Saint Cyril says here that the Antichrist will surpass every one of his predecessors. Think of that. And, he says, he will show this disposition toward everyone...

“against everyone”—against all.

He had seemed gentle, generous-hearted, and... then suddenly he changes completely. Why? Because his virtue had no depth; everything he displayed was hypocrisy. For even the devil, my beloved, appears clothed in virtue. This is what the Apostle Paul means when he says, “as an angel of light.” So what is strange or surprising about it? Thus, when the Antichrist now undergoes this sudden change, “but especially against us Christians,” he will direct himself with particular fury against the Christians. Can we not see here that the devil will spew out such...

or rather, will express all his fury against the Christians? I do not wish to dwell on this any longer, because further on—if not today, then we shall see when—Saint Cyril tells us how those martyrs will stand firm and how they, in their turn, will surpass in martyrdom every previous martyr in history. Today we speak of Saint Demetrios the Great Martyr and Saint Barbara the Great Martyr. Through their martyrdom, the martyrs of that time will surpass every martyr of every preceding age. We might say that the Antichrist will be a colossus of wickedness, while the Christians will be colossi of virtue and martyrdom. All of them? No, not all—not all. Sadly, that is the point: not all. But we shall see this as Saint Cyril’s exposition progresses. “After daring to do such things for only three years and six months, he is rendered powerless by the glorious Second Coming from Heaven of the Only-Begotten Son of God, our true Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who will destroy the Antichrist by the breath of His mouth...”

Christ will come from Heaven after three and a half years—only three and a half years. I will not explain this now, because a little further on Saint Cyril himself will explain to us what these three and a half years mean, where that period comes from, and what he says next.

“He will be rendered powerless.” The verb “to render powerless” does not mean “to make disappear.” “By the glorious Second Coming from heaven of the Only-Begotten Son of God.” In modern language, this verb might suggest something close to annihilation. But here it does not mean annihilation; it means putting someone out of action, making him unable to operate. There is also a prayer that we read at memorial services and funerals which says, “You who rendered the devil powerless.”

“You who trampled down death and rendered the devil powerless.” Do not imagine that this means the Lord annihilated the devil. It means that He puts him out of action. Of course, this victory is already complete in principle, though it is only partly manifested in actual history. The devil still operates within history, but he is defeated. His defeat is already certain. Therefore, when it says that the Lord renders him powerless, it means that He puts the devil out of action; it does not mean that He annihilates him. At Christ’s Second Coming, the devil does not cease to exist, nor will the Antichrist cease to exist.

The Lord will simply put him out of action. Out of what action? Out of that dreadful work which he will have carried out on earth for three and a half years. When those three and a half years are over, Saint Cyril continues: “The Lord will slay the Antichrist with the breath of His mouth and deliver him to the fire.” The Lord will render him powerless, so that his work can continue no longer, and with a single breath—that is, with a single word—He will destroy him. What does this show? The utter ease with which He will do it.

Utter ease—very great ease indeed. After all, the Lord spoke, and all things came into being. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. So when the text says, “with the breath,” it means the air—the breath of His mouth. As I have said, this signifies how easily it will be done. He will render the Antichrist powerless. The Lord will command that he be put out of action, and it will happen at once. Then we shall see the power of Jesus Christ. But once the Lord has rendered him powerless, put him out of action, and removed him from the scene, where will the Antichrist go? Where will he go? Will he live in some house? Will he flee to the mountains? Will he go and drown himself?

What will the Antichrist do? The Lord, it says, will deliver him to the fire of Gehenna. Pay close attention here to what I told you at the beginning of this talk: Christ will render him powerless by His coming. But Christ’s coming means that nothing follows after it, because Christ will come to us in a real and visible coming. The Apocalypse often speaks of Christ’s coming in the sense of how He acts within history. Here, however, we have the manifest coming of Christ. Pay attention to this: His manifest coming.

When Christ comes, can history continue? Quite obviously not. I insist on this because the contrary idea is widespread, and I have my reasons for repeating it. I insist strongly. I do not wish to tell you why I keep saying it, but I insist so that you will not be led astray. Now pay attention. What will happen when Christ comes? You have heard what will happen: the resurrection of the dead. Those who have died, sinners and righteous alike, will rise. What does it mean that they will rise? They will receive their former bodies, now made new, incorruptible and immortal, free from all needs, with no more corruption, death, or anything of that kind.

When we say “incorruptible and immortal,” immortality refers to freedom from death, while incorruptibility refers to freedom from bodily needs. There will be no needs. At present I undergo corruption: I grow old, I become ill, and I must replenish my body with food. None of these things will exist then. And what will happen to creation? It too will be made new. Then the judgment will take place. And after the judgment, the Lord will say to the righteous, as He says in the Gospel according to Matthew: “Come into My Kingdom; come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” What does this mean? It means that until then the devout and the righteous were not yet in the Kingdom of God.

They were in Paradise, a realm where souls alone—not bodies—have a foretaste of the Kingdom of God. With the resurrection of the dead, this Paradise comes to an end; and then, reunited with their bodies, after the judgment and at Christ’s Second Coming, they enter the Kingdom of God. The ungodly were not in Hell, but in Hades, where they had a foretaste of Hell. The demons will also enter Hell, but at this moment neither the demons nor the devil are in Hell.

What is the devil? He is one person: Lucifer, the devil. Remember how many arguments I give you to establish securely what I am telling you. When the demons were terrified before Christ in the person of the demon-possessed man of the country of the Gergesenes, what did they say to Him? “Have You come to torment us before our time?” What does “torment” mean here? It means being sent to Hell. In other words: “Have You come to send us to Hell before our appointed time?” They knew that their time had not yet come. That is why they begged Him, “Do not send us into the abyss.” The abyss is Hell. “Abyss” means bottomless: the prefix means “without,” and the rest of the word means “depth.”

At the Second Coming, the devil—the one person represented by the Antichrist—and his angels, who are the demons, will be told: “Now you will go to Hell.” For whom was Hell prepared? For the devil. But you also will go with him, because you lived according to the devil’s gospel and according to the devil’s law. Go into the fire, because that is what you freely chose.

You chose it by your own free will. Go, then, and see the one whom you chose during your life. What does this mean? It means that the resurrection of the dead will take place, and all the rest. Is there any history after that? Clearly, there is not. Now listen to what Saint Cyril says here: the Lord will render the Antichrist powerless and cast him—deliver him—to the fire of Gehenna, that is, to Hell. Therefore the Antichrist—and it is the Antichrist we are discussing—will be the last. Once again, that is the end. And he will go to Hell. Finally, the Apocalypse says: “He was cast into the lake burning with fire and brimstone.”

This is the image of Hell. You know that Sodom and Gomorrah are a historical type of Hell: a type enacted within history, an actual historical event that prefigures Hell. Scripture says that brimstone and fire rained down. No one remained; no one remained. This means that there is no escape from anywhere. And now, in the Apocalypse, whom does Christ cast into the lake burning with fire and brimstone? The devil, the Antichrist, and the false prophet. And it says that He cast them in alive. Let me explain one detail. What does “alive” mean? The Apostle Paul says...

In Thessalonians, “we who remain,” meaning that when Christ comes, some people will still be alive. Obviously, the Antichrist will be alive. This will be the end of history. We, says the Apostle, will not undergo death, but will pass from corruption into incorruption and from mortality into immortality. What does this mean? Those who are alive at that time will not undergo death. What death? The death we experience now—biological death. But when the Apocalypse says that He cast them in alive, it means that the sinners, without undergoing death, will enter alive, having received incorruption and immortality in their very existence.

When it says that the devil, the false prophet, and the Antichrist are cast in alive—though the devil is a spirit and therefore does not belong to the bodily sequence—it means that the Antichrist and the false prophet are made incorruptible. What, then, happens to those human beings? They are made immortal and go directly to Hell. So you see something very clear here: the devil goes to Hell, and the Antichrist goes to Hell without undergoing death—at least this is so of the Antichrist and the false prophet. The devil therefore has no opportunity to act after the Antichrist has been rendered powerless. I think what I have told you is perfectly clear, supported by arguments from Holy Scripture, and I believe it is understandable.

Moving on to paragraph thirteen, Saint Cyril says: “We teach these things not by inventing clever notions, but because we have learned them from the divine Scriptures read in the Church, and especially from the prophecy of Daniel which has just been read, as Gabriel the Archangel also interpreted it, saying as follows,” and so on. Do not think, he says, that we are simply inventing the things we tell you. Forgive the expression: these things did not merely pop into our heads.

They are not inventions or fairy tales. To invent clever notions means to make things up, imagine them, and then serve them to others. Saint Cyril says that we do not invent such things; we receive them all from the divine Scriptures. Our assurance comes from the divine Scriptures. Indeed, he calls them “the Scriptures read in the Church.” By this he means the readings proclaimed in our Church. And a little later he says, “from Daniel, which has just been read.” We read the prophecy of Daniel and learned—“having learned”—what I shall tell you shortly.

But I would like to pause here for a moment. There are many things one simply cannot cover. This is a question often raised here, but especially by children in catechism class: “How do we know that Christianity is true?” For if Christianity is true, then it is also unique; nothing else is true in the same way—not Islam, Buddhism, or anything else, nor those syncretistic systems—forgive the expression—such as Theosophy and Freemasonry. How do we know that these might not be true instead of Christianity?

My dear friends, it is very simple—very simple indeed. Look at them; read anything you wish from all these systems, and you will see that they are truly human inventions. They are fabricated, especially Theosophy and Freemasonry, for Freemasonry contains Theosophy and Theosophy contains Freemasonry. They are close siblings, if not nursed on the very same milk. So be it. The point is that all these things are inventions. People devise them with their own minds. They turn things into allegories and myths; they take myths, interpret them allegorically, and draw conclusions from them. And what is all this?

My dear friends, these are products of human reasoning and, if you will, something more: products of human fantasy. I say this plainly. Christianity is revelation. How do I know that I shall rise from the dead? Because Christ rose from the dead, and that is a fact. We have facts—facts. Facts bear witness and give certainty. Speaking about Christ’s Transfiguration, the Apostle Peter says, “We did not speak to you on the basis of cleverly devised myths.” What does “cleverly devised” mean? It comes from the verb “to devise.” Forgive the colloquial expression: it means something that simply popped into my head. We need to put it that way. It did not come from my own mind, he says.

I did not invent it or devise it; rather, we speak to you of things we heard, saw, and touched. That is why John the Theologian says concerning the Word (Logos) of life: “That which we have seen, that which we have heard, and that which our hands have touched.” You see? We have facts. Facts provide the measure of certainty. If Christ rose from the dead, then I too shall rise. The One who rose told me that I also—a human being—shall rise. And I believe the One who told me this because, let me say it once more, He rose from the dead. If the Freemasons, Theosophists, Buddhists, Hindus, or anyone else tell me such things, am I to believe them? Their claims are human inventions.

They are products of fantasy. So there is simply no question about it. That is why Saint Cyril says here: “We are not inventing things; these teachings come from Holy Scripture.” And Holy Scripture has provided the full measure of testimony. As he says, “And Gabriel the Archangel interpreted it, saying...” Where did Gabriel the Archangel give this interpretation? To Daniel. What did he say? These things are written, if you wish to look them up, in the seventh chapter of Daniel, from verse 23 onward. What does it say? “The fourth Beast shall be a fourth kingdom upon the earth, which shall surpass all the kingdoms.” Daniel saw four beasts, and he is told that the last Beast

will surpass the first three beasts. “And this is the kingdom of the Romans, according to the interpretation handed down by the Church.” What did the ancient interpreters of the Church—the Fathers—tell us in their explanations? They told us that this was the Roman Empire. “For the first renowned kingdom was that of the Assyrians; the second, that of the Medes and Persians together; and after these, the third was that of the Macedonians. The fourth kingdom is the present kingdom of the Romans.” Daniel saw four, my dear friends—he saw four beasts in the Mediterranean Sea. And what he saw was a majestic vision, a truly awe-inspiring and majestic vision. He sees a drama unfolding,

the historical drama of four empires in the region of the Mediterranean Sea. As you know, God so ordained it; He did not merely permit it: of all the seas in world history, the Mediterranean is the most important. It is this enclosed sea, the Mediterranean, within whose region our homeland lies. Yes, not the Atlantic, nor the Pacific, nor the Indian Ocean, but once again the Mediterranean. The most important events have taken place here, and the principal empires arose and flourished here. And the fifth kingdom is the Kingdom of Christ, according to that other vision of Nebuchadnezzar, which Daniel interprets.

Here in Daniel, however, Gabriel gives the interpretation, because Christ was born in Palestine—that is, within the region of the Mediterranean Sea. You see, then, that the Mediterranean Sea has played, and apparently will continue to play, the greatest role in history: a role even in the coming of the Antichrist, but also in our salvation. Since our time has come to an end, God willing, my dear friends, we shall continue next Monday.

Πέντε και πέντε, για να βγάλει την υποψία τι ποσοστά ανθρώπων υπάρχουν για να σωθούν ή να απολεσθούν. Το βγάζει αυτό. Ή λέει για το χίλια: «Χίλια χρόνια, χίλια έτη, ως ημέρα μία παρά Κυρίω». Ο αριθμός 200 δεν υπάρχει. Συνεπώς πρέπει να είναι πραγματικό. Και στη σημερινή κατάσταση, συνεπώς, δύναται να πάρει διαστάσεις, διότι ολόκληρη η ανθρωπότητα δεν ήταν 200 εκατομμύρια πριν από 2.000 χρόνια, αλλά βρίσκεται. Η απορία, λοιπόν, του αξιωματικού: πώς μπορούν να παραταχθούν αυτά τα 200 εκατομμύρια;

Επί παραδείγματι, τον φυλακίζω, τον φυλακίζω χωρίς να υπάρχει λόγος· είμαι απάνθρωπος. Όταν, επί παραδείγματι, τότε στη δουλεία που υπήρχε στην Αμερική έπαιρναν τα παιδιά των δούλων, γιατί έπαιρναν παντρεμένους ανθρώπους, δούλους, μαύρους, Αφρικανούς. Θυμηθείτε την «Καλύβα του Μπάρμπα-Θωμά», όσοι έχετε διαβάσει αυτό το πάρα πάρα πολύ ωραίο βιβλίο, «Η Καλύβα του Μπάρμπα-Θωμά», της Στόου — πώς λέγεται αυτή η συγγραφέας; Μια γυναίκα το έγραψε το βιβλίο αυτό — που διαπραγματεύεται στο αφεντικό το παιδί ενός ζεύγους που ήσαν δούλοι. Θα το πουλούσε σε έναν άνθρωπο. Να πάρεις το παιδί ενός ανθρώπου να το πουλήσεις, επειδή ακριβώς οι άνθρωποι αυτοί σού είναι δούλοι, αυτό είναι απανθρωπία, διότι αφαιρείς από μια οικογένεια ένα παιδί τους, το παίρνεις. Θέλουν;

Μεγάλη ευκολία, με πάρα πολύ μεγάλη ευκολία. Εξάλλου ο Κύριος είπε και γίνονται τα πάντα. Είπε ο Θεός «γενηθήτω φως» και έγινε το φως. Όταν λοιπόν λέει εδώ «τῷ πνεύματι», θα πει τον αέρα. Προσέξτε, τον αέρα, την πνοή του στόματός του. Δηλαδή αυτό που λέμε, ξαναλέγω, που θα πει ευκολία. Θα καταργήσει τον Αντίχριστον. Θα πει ο Κύριος να καταργηθεί και θα καταργηθεί αμέσως. Εκεί θα δούμε τη δύναμη του Ιησού Χριστού. Αλλά όταν τον καταργήσει, τον θέσει εκτός έργου, εκ ποδών, πού θα πάει ο Αντίχριστος; Πού θα πάει; Θα πάει να μείνει σε κάνα σπίτι; Θα πάει στα βουνά; Θα πάει να πνιγεί;

όχι ο Χριστιανισμός; Αγαπητοί μου, είναι πάρα πολύ απλό το πράγμα. Είναι πάρα πολύ απλό. Ρίξτε μια ματιά, διαβάστε ό,τι θέλετε από όλα αυτά, θα δείτε ότι είναι όντως ευρεσιλογούμενα. Είναι κατ’ επινόησιν, μάλιστα κατεξοχήν η Θεοσοφία και ο Μασονισμός, διότι ο Μασονισμός περιέχει την Θεοσοφία και η Θεοσοφία περιέχει τον Μασονισμό. Είναι πρώτα αδελφάκια, αν όχι ομογάλακτα αδελφάκια. Ομογάλακτα αδελφάκια. Ας είναι. Το θέμα είναι ότι όλα αυτά είναι ευρεσιλογούμενα. Τα βρίσκουν με το μυαλό τους. Ναι, τα αλληγορούν, τα μυθολογούν, τα βγάζουν, τα κάνουν, παίρνουν τους μύθους, τους αλληγορούν, βγάζουν από εκεί συμπεράσματα. Και τι είναι όλα αυτά;
