Summary
Saint Cyril distinguishes Christ’s visible return from heaven from the Antichrist’s earthly claim to be the Messiah. Biblical prophecy often contains several layers of fulfillment, as Ezekiel’s dry bones signify both Israel’s restoration and the resurrection of the dead. Saint Cyril interprets the Antichrist’s seizure of Roman authority through the historical imagery of his own era, while Babylon symbolizes every power and culture opposed to God.

My dear friends, we are now in the eleventh paragraph of Saint Cyril’s Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture. You remember our subject: its dominant theme is the Antichrist. Of course, that is not the only subject. The lecture begins with the renewal of the universe and ends with the Second Coming of Christ. But between the renewal of the universe and the Second Coming of Christ comes that very important and vast subject, the coming of the Antichrist, which we are now examining. So we are in the eleventh paragraph. In the tenth, Saint Cyril told us that we must not expect
a Messiah from the earth, but from Heaven. As the Lord Himself says, lightning flashes from east to west; so also will be the coming of the Lord—visible, from Heaven. The Antichrist, however, will come from the earth. This is a fundamental and essential criterion. If someone comes and says, “I am the Messiah; I will give you this, do this for you, show you this,” and so forth, this criterion is fundamental. Even if we know nothing else, the very fact that this man does not come from Heaven makes it clear that he is not the Messiah. He is merely one of those who claim
the titles of the Messiah—an antichrist—and, of course, this applies above all to the Antichrist himself, who will lay claim in every possible way to all the titles of the Messiah. Having told us this, Saint Cyril now says: “Moreover, since He was first to be born among men of a Virgin, the devil maliciously sought beforehand to discredit the matter. In paganism he invented myths in advance about false gods begetting children and being born of women, so that, as he imagined, once the lie had come first, the truth also might be disbelieved. In the same way, since the true Christ is to come a second time,”
“the adversary will exploit the expectation of the innocent, especially those of the circumcision. He will bring forward a man who is a sorcerer, thoroughly skilled in the deceitful arts of potions and incantations. This man will seize for himself the authority of the Roman Empire and falsely call himself Christ. By the name of Christ, he will deceive the Jews who are awaiting the one who is to come, while he will bring the Gentiles under his power through magical illusions.” I have written a paraphrase of the main points. When the Word (Logos) was about to become incarnate and was expected to be born of a Virgin, the devil sought beforehand to discredit the matter—that is, he hurried to cast suspicion on it before it happened. Within paganism, he introduced false gods who begot children and were themselves born of women, inventing myths beforehand about the birth of Christ. He wanted people to say: “You speak of Christ’s birth, saying that He is God and was born of a Virgin. We have similar things; we have them also...”
“in the pagan religions, where gods beget children and are themselves born.” In the same way, when Christ is about to come again, the devil will once more hurry to create a counterfeit situation. He will bring forward a person from among the Jews—those of the circumcision—and present that person as Christ. This supposed Christ will seize Roman authority and will be highly skilled in magic. He will deceive the Jews because they are awaiting the Messiah, and he will deceive the Gentiles through his magical trickery.
What, my dear friends, does the eleventh paragraph mean to tell us? Please pay attention as we make a brief analysis. A great many hostile books are in circulation, written both in earlier periods and especially during the last century, though some are older still. They are presented to people throughout the world and to our own people; many such foreign books are translated into Greek. They are nothing other than what Saint Cyril describes here: myths invented beforehand and truth discredited beforehand. Myths invented beforehand and truth discredited beforehand. What exactly does this mean? It means the following:
Mithras, a Persian deity, uses bread and wine to establish a mystery rite. This is Satan’s attempt to discredit the truth beforehand and to invent a myth in advance, so that when the genuine Mystery of the Holy Eucharist appears, people may suppose: “No, gentlemen, Christ is not presenting anything new. We already find this in Mithras.” Do you understand? I am sorry if some of my listeners are innocent and simple people, and I am compelled to speak in this way, placing before them certain facts that may leave them wondering what is happening. But, my dear friends, if today these books can be found even in the last display window of the smallest provincial town, should we not speak? Should we not? Without going into too much detail, what I have given you is only one small example. The late Panagiotis Trembelas once wrote a book—unfortunately, it is no longer available, though I have it in my library—entitled Mystery Religions and Christianity. This book is valuable for the following reason: Christianity was accused of having borrowed
all its mystical and ritual content, so to speak, from the mystery religions—the Orphic Mysteries and all the rest—and therefore of offering nothing original, because the mystery religions had come first. Even today, there are Western theologians who reason in the same way. Take, for example, Moses’ account of creation. They say: “Moses offers nothing original. Moses borrowed Babylonian elements: the accounts of creation, the Flood, the angels”—I will not list everything, because perhaps these things I am saying may trouble some of you. They claim that Moses offers nothing original and therefore was not inspired by God.
But examine these myths that supposedly came first, my dear friends, and you will find chaos in their content. Even if some elements have an outward resemblance, this does not prove that Christianity borrowed from them. Do you understand? It does not prove in the least that Christianity took anything from them. Saint Cyril says that the devil does this in order to discredit what is true, to discredit what is genuine. And I must warn you: many of our young people read such books, because bookstore displays are overflowing with them. Come and take me with you, and say to me:
“Walk around Larissa with me and show me which books you mean.” The displays are overflowing with them. And so our young people are scandalized, until they finally say, “Christianity is nothing at all.” As for those prominent people who cause this scandal—who are truly instruments of the devil—God alone knows what account they will have to give. Yet our people are indeed being scandalized. I tell you again: even if there are a few outward similarities—and let us take another example, not the case of Mithras that I mentioned, but the creation of the world—who says that God did not reveal the creation of the world to our first parents? Adam,
the prophet, was a prophet of the future and probably also of the past. He prophesied the future when, upon seeing the woman, he said, “This is flesh of my flesh.” Indeed, he was a prophet of the present, the past, and the future. It was a prophecy concerning the present because Adam had been in an ecstasy, in a deep sleep. How could he have known that Eve had been created from him? How could he have known? “This woman,” he says, “is from my side; she is bone of my bones.” Then comes the prophecy of the future: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” Do you want confirmation of its authority?
Jesus Christ repeated this prophecy. Adam was probably also a prophet of the past, just as Moses was plainly a prophet of the present, the future, and the past, since he wrote about creation. It is well known that God’s promises to our first parents were passed down through the generations. When mankind was scattered and people lost sight of the true God, they surrounded these great truths with a covering of myth. The work of the researcher is simply to remove the mythical covering and disclose the truth, so as to show that the truth was preserved by divine inspiration only in Holy Scripture. This is the proper interpretation of these matters, not the fabrications of those who are instruments of Satan. When Columbus went to America—that is, when he discovered America—the native inhabitants saw that the Europeans had white skin. These were the people commonly called redskins, who lived there and who now are themselves close to disappearing because of civilization. When they saw the Europeans’ white, pale faces, they thought the Resurrection
of the dead had begun, because only a dead person was pale. The memory of that double-length day was also preserved among ancient and extremely remote peoples—the day when Joshua, sometime in the fifteenth or fourteenth century before Christ, commanded the sun to stand still over Gibeon, and so forth. This memory is preserved in what we call, in quotation marks, the “fairy tales” of the nations. But fairy tales are truths wrapped in myth, because God’s presence was no longer there to preserve the truth. You see, then, my dear friends, that these matters can be explained. If someone investigates and investigates deeply, he will uncover this truth. Therefore, we must be very careful about what we read, especially writings that seek to discredit our faith, Christianity, our Mysteries, and our salvation. Saint Cyril then continues: just as the devil invented myths beforehand and sought to discredit the truth by claiming that gods were born of women, in order to attack the Mystery of the Divine Economy, so the same thing will happen before the Second Coming of Christ. Before the Second Coming of Christ, the devil will hasten to bring into history a man of his own, an instrument wholly and completely his,
who is called the Antichrist, and he will present him as the Messiah. I now come to the second part of the paragraph, to draw out a few points that will be useful to us. We have seen that this adversary will be one of the circumcision: he will be a Jew, and he will deceive the Jews. Why, I ask you, will he deceive the Jews? Please pay close attention to the reason. The Jews did not believe in Christ and consequently are still awaiting a Messiah.
Since the prophecies speak of a Messiah, when this man appears in a way that satisfies the Jewish people’s messianic expectations, the people will be deceived and will accept him as the Messiah.
But you will say to me, “Do they not have the prophecies?” They had them then as well. Yet from that time until today, they have not interpreted the prophecies correctly. I have been astonished, my dear friends, because I have read several articles in one of their own periodicals published here in Greece, and I have seen... Thank you.
It is very instructive to see how they think about the Messiah. It is astonishing how these people interpret Holy Scripture, the Old Testament. With the way they interpret the prophecies, they could never arrive at the Messiah, Jesus Christ. I will give you only one example. There is the well-known prophecy of Ezekiel that we read when we return from the Epitaphios procession, or during Matins on Holy Saturday: the bare bones. “Rise and be raised; hear the voice.” Those bones, he says, were scattered across an open field, a plain, and they began to join together. They began to acquire sinews, flesh, and skin—flesh, sinews, and skin.
Ezekiel marvels, and God says to him, “Son of man, in this way I shall bring you out of your graves.” Now pay close attention to this prophecy, and see how the Church interprets it and how the Synagogue interprets it. The comparison is instructive. The Synagogue says that this prophecy refers to the outcome—or rather, to the deliverance God would grant His people after the ordeal of war, specifically after that great captivity, the Babylonian Captivity. The people were, as it were, lying in graves;
the kingdom of Israel had been overthrown. Now God restores His people to Jerusalem, and this corresponds to Ezekiel’s vision: He raises them from the graves and establishes a new kingdom once again. This interpretation is true—pay attention, it is true—but it is only the first layer. Do you know what a prophecy is like? If one were to explain what prophecy means and how it is interpreted, it would be an immense subject—an immense, immense subject. No prophecy is ever interpreted in precisely the same way as another beside it, although there are general principles of interpretation.
Each prophecy always has its own distinctive character. Here, specifically, we have the first layer of a prophecy. Behind it lies a second layer, which leads us to another interpretation. Behind that may be a third, a fourth, a fifth, and a sixth. A prophecy, then, may have many layers. This is also how the Apocalypse is interpreted; you remember when we discussed it. One fulfillment occurs at a particular moment in history, another at a second historical moment, and another at a third. When Christ spoke of the destruction of Jerusalem, that was the first historical layer. Then Christ makes a leap that is not apparent from the literary form, because His prophetic discourse continues without interruption, and He says, “And then...” Is He still speaking about the destruction of Jerusalem? No, He cannot be.
“And then the sun and the moon will be darkened, and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear,” and so on. Someone may ask, “But how can this be?” Quite simply, the prophecy has two levels. The first is historical, and the second is eschatological. Christ taught us how to interpret. This interpretation is not arbitrary. Neither I nor the Church interpret arbitrarily. To use a beautiful expression of Saint Cyril, which he will mention further on, we are not inventing novel interpretations. We do not sit down and devise something new in our own minds. No. Christ taught us how to interpret Holy Scripture.
This prophecy of Ezekiel, then, has two levels. The first is indeed the historical level: the people will be freed from their Babylonian captivity and return to Palestine. But this people is a type, a foreshadowing of the people of God, that is, of the Church. And the resurrection of the dead will not be a mere figure of speech; it will be real, and we shall truly rise from the graves. This is why the Church very rightly appoints this prophetic reading for Matins (Orthros) on Great Saturday. But how do I know that there will be a resurrection of the dead? It is very simple:
Christ is risen. And the Resurrection of Christ bears witness to me that the dead will rise. Thus, the prophecy has two aspects. The Jews remain with the first, the historical aspect. They cannot search beyond it; they cannot. But those who have believed, and those who believe, go further and behold the full depth and, at the same time, the grandeur of the prophecy. I have given you this merely as an illustration, as an example, so that you may understand why the Jews became stuck there; and there are many other examples. They have even reached the point of saying—and I have told you this before—that the Messiah is not one person, but a people, since they see that three thousand, four thousand years have passed since the time of Abraham.
When, at last, will this Messiah come? So they begin, of course, to draw misleading conclusions; they go astray and lead others astray, saying that the Messiah is a people. And who are these people? The people of Israel. They say that Israel will be liberated and will liberate the whole earth—or rather, enslave the whole earth—because Zionism has no other purpose than to conquer our entire planet. You see what interpretations they arrive at. Well then, because the wretched Jews are fixed upon these interpretations, when the Antichrist comes, my dear ones, they will regard him as the Messiah. For he will meet their expectations. And what expectations are those?
Material expectations. Christ did not meet the people’s material expectations, because even in His time they were already interpreting the prophets incorrectly. Do you not remember the five thousand who were fed? How disappointed they were when He told them: Do not seek the bread that perishes, the food which, after a person eats it, leaves him hungry again and still subject to death. Seek instead that bread which preserves you unto eternal life. And what is that bread? My flesh—Myself. They were disappointed and went away, and their descendants continue to go away even to this day. You see the misunderstanding.
You may ask, “Did they not understand Christ?” No; Christ spoke correctly. Did Christ perhaps mean something else? Was He trying to say something different but failed to express it properly? No. His meaning is perfectly clear. If Christ had not meant this, He could have said to them, “Why are you leaving? Come back. You misunderstood Me. I meant it as an allegory.” But no: unless you eat My flesh and drink My blood, you have no life. “This is a hard saying; who can hear it?” And to show you that the Lord does not correct what He said, because this is precisely what He means, He turns to the twelve disciples and says to them, “Do you also wish to go away?” Do you want to leave as well? You know that what I have said is exactly what I mean. And the Apostle Peter said, “Lord, You have the words of life; to whom else shall we go? You alone are the true Messiah.”
Please understand this. So, I will say it for the fifth time: the Jews will believe in this Antichrist because he will meet their expectations. Of course, I must tell you that there are also very many Christians among us, sometimes even Christian authors, who write and speak in such a way that many people come to believe Christianity has gone bankrupt because it has not given us food to eat. Let me show you how they say this, so that you may immediately see what is meant: Christianity has not solved the social problem. They have written this; they say it openly.
What does it mean to say that Christianity has not solved the social problem? Forgive me for sometimes using words that are not very refined: it means that Christianity has not solved the problem of filling people’s bellies. And when the Antichrist comes and fills their bellies, they will say, “That Messiah, Jesus Christ, deceived us two thousand years ago. This one is the Messiah.” Consequently, even some of our Christians who speak of a bankrupt Christianity—because they too have misunderstood and belong to the same category as the Jews, expecting Christianity to fill their bellies—will also, poor souls, worship the Antichrist.
Very well!
But, he says, the Antichrist will also deceive the Gentiles. He will deceive the first group, as I told you, through their expectation of the Messiah. But how will he deceive the second? Listen to how Saint Cyril puts it. He says that the adversary, the devil, brings forward a certain man, a sorcerer thoroughly skilled in the deceitful arts of potions and incantations; and further on he says that this man will deceive the Gentiles, bringing them under his power through magical illusions. The devil, he says, will choose a man who is thoroughly versed in magic.
He will be skilled in magic both in the broadest and in the strictest sense—in every branch of it. After satisfying the expectations of the Jews in a material way, he will use his false wonders to deceive those who are not Jews. In other words, he will ensnare both groups. These false wonders will be terrifying. Since Saint Cyril speaks later, in the fourteenth paragraph, about these deceptive and counterfeit wonders, I shall not analyze them further here. We shall discuss them more fully when we reach that paragraph.
There is one further point I wish to draw from this same paragraph, the eleventh. It is this: “He therefore brings forward a man,” and so on, “who seizes for himself the authority of the Roman Empire and falsely calls himself Christ,” and so forth. Pay close attention to something here.
The Antichrist, he says, will seize Roman authority and present himself as emperor and ruler of the world. I must tell you that interpreters of the Apocalypse—that is, interpreters of eschatological matters—often draw their images from their own age. This should not surprise you. We too, when interpreting the Apocalypse and what it says about the Antichrist, draw images from our own age. What do we say, for example? Listen. People say that 666 is written on products, or that it is displayed on the headquarters of the European Economic Community in Brussels, and so forth. What are these? They are features of the present age. It is perfectly natural for people to use the features of their age when interpreting the Apocalypse. It was therefore equally natural for Saint Cyril to draw upon the conditions of his own age when interpreting eschatological matters. And what does he draw upon? What does he say? He says that the Antichrist will seize Roman authority. When he speaks of Roman authority, in which century are we? We are in the fourth century.
The catechetical lectures were delivered in the year 350 after Christ. Thus, we are in the fourth century. At that time the Byzantine Empire was already being established under Constantine the Great: what we might call the Eastern Roman state, which became Christian and Hellenized. This is the Byzantine state familiar to us, the revival and reemergence of Greece. For although the political order was Roman, Greek culture conquered Rome and built a New Rome,
Constantinople. We thus have a new state, the Byzantine state, which is no longer Roman but Greek. Let those who spin myths say whatever they wish. Let them insist upon whatever version they please. Indeed, modern writers have become furious over this subject. They are furious. Whenever they wish to accuse someone of being backward or benighted, to call him an obscurantist, they say that he belongs to the Byzantine era, that his ideas are “Byzantinisms,” and so on. It is a common expression; you know it and hear it in everyday life. But the Byzantine state was splendid. Greek culture prevailed, and Greece lived and rose to prominence once again.
The Roman state continued as a Roman state, confined to the West, with Rome as its capital. Rome, of course, still existed then; it had not yet been destroyed, for its destruction came later. So what is Saint Cyril saying here? Before his eyes he has history as he knew it. It is therefore perfectly natural for him to interpret according to the historical circumstances of his own age and to say—as we shall see a little further on, so I shall not dwell upon it now—that the next paragraph speaks of ten kings and so forth. The Book of Revelation
speaks about the Romans. This, then, is a matter of interpretation. Consider also that John the Evangelist speaks of Babylon: “Babylon has fallen,” he says. Which Babylon? When John the Evangelist wrote about Babylon, Babylon had fallen long before. Do you know when Babylon fell? It fell before Christ, when the Medes and Persians captured it in a single night. This was in the time of Daniel, while Daniel was still alive. Daniel lived under Babylonian rule and then under Medo-Persian rule. Daniel was alive in the fifth century before Christ. Babylon, therefore, had fallen and no longer existed.
The same is true of Nineveh and Babylon. When Alexander the Great passed through two hundred years later, they told him, “Nineveh once stood here”—but it was only a mound of earth. Here was Nineveh in the time of Alexander the Great, and farther on stood Babylon. So which Babylon is said to fall when John the Evangelist writes at the end of the first century after Christ? Babylon is an image. An image of what? For Christians of the first centuries, it was an image of Rome, because the Romans slaughtered Christians. Christians were taken there and martyred there. Thus Babylon is Rome, yet it is not merely Rome. It is every city and every authority that governs in an antichristian and ungodly manner. Saint Cyril had Rome before his eyes, the Rome that brought martyrdom upon thousands and thousands—hundreds of thousands—of Christians, in that infamous Colosseum and elsewhere. But would we today say that Babylon is Rome? No. What might it be? When we were studying the Apocalypse, do you remember what I told you? Babylon is Western civilization.
It is leading the world into atheism. It is Western civilization. That is what I told you. Therefore, it is not a particular city, but a spirit that establishes itself somewhere. To be precise, however, when we speak today of Western civilization, it is no longer defined geographically.
Quite simply, Western civilization has spread across the whole earth. Japan, for instance, is an Eastern country, yet it is immersed in Western civilization. Our tape recorders and so forth come from there. Japan is immersed in Western civilization. Western civilization, then, is not so much a place as a way of life.
This is Babylon, and this is Rome. Saint Cyril calls Babylon Rome; we call it Western civilization. It is the same thing. So, as we read this passage, what must we keep in mind? We must not misunderstand Saint Cyril, who is interpreting according to the historical picture of his own age. Once again, we must understand that the Book of Revelation is not limited in its scope and therefore cannot be limited in its interpretation. It does not concern the Greeks alone. There are some, including brethren of ours here and in Larissa, who wish to interpret the Apocalypse
solely in terms of Greek circumstances and Greek territory. Nothing could be more foolish. It is a universal book, whose stage is the whole earth—and not only the earth, but the universe and heaven as well. All these form the setting of the Apocalypse. Its scope, then, is neither limited nor narrow. Thus Saint Cyril, in his interpretation, preserves this universal scope; and in our own interpretation, we too must always preserve the universality of the Book of Revelation. And so, my dear ones, we come to the twelfth paragraph: “And
the aforementioned Antichrist will come in this manner, when the appointed times of Roman rule have been fulfilled and the end of the world is drawing near. Ten Roman kings will arise together, perhaps in different places, but reigning at the same time. After them will come an eleventh, the Antichrist, who through his wicked art of magic will seize Roman authority. He will humble three of those who reigned before him and will bring the remaining seven under his control.”
I will put this into simple words for you. The aforementioned Antichrist—the one of whom we have spoken—will come. When? When the appointed times of the kings of Rome have been fulfilled; and then the end of the world will be drawing near. Ten kings will reign at the same time, but in different places. Therefore, each will not be the emperor of Rome. They will be like the subordinate kings who actually existed. Remember that King Herod had a small state there in Palestine, a very small state, and he was the king of that region.
Farther on there was another king, and beyond him another, while over them stood the emperor of Rome. Thus there will be ten kings, he says, reigning in different places but at the same time. The eleventh will be the Antichrist, and through his wicked art of magic—note that Saint Cyril, following the language of his age, uses “wicked art” to mean magic, so “the wicked art of magic” simply means sorcery—through his sorcery, he says, the Antichrist will seize Roman authority. Of the ten reigning kings, he will humble three, while the other seven
he will keep as his collaborators. Saint Cyril tells us this again in the thirteenth paragraph. There he calls the Antichrist the eighth, because there are seven—pardon me—there are ten kings, and he will humble three. How many remain? Seven remain. The Antichrist, then, will be the eighth. And then, he says, he will reign. As Saint Cyril will explain farther on, at first he will appear gentle, but afterward he will become cruel. He will tell us this shortly in the paragraph that follows. Here I would like to repeat what I said earlier, since I have already prepared the ground for it: Saint Cyril’s interpretation is based on the historical circumstances of his own age. I would only like to make one observation, one comment. Do you see how...
dangerous it is to interpret something that has not yet come to pass? Speaking rather broadly, we might say that Saint Cyril makes a mistake here because he speaks of Roman kings. Yet he does not make a mistake, because he is simply interpreting according to the circumstances of his age. So, in one sense he does not make a mistake, and in another sense he does. I say this for the sake of those who rush ahead and are far too ready to draw conclusions from the circumstances of their own age. Please, the Book of Revelation must be interpreted with great care—with very, very great care. Saint Andrew of Caesarea gives us this rule: everything will be revealed
when its appointed time comes, and it will be revealed only to the eyes of those who practice nepsis, that is, watchfulness—those whose hearts are pure and who will see that events are unfolding exactly as the Word of God describes them. It is—how can I explain it to you?
Well... suppose I have a bolt and a nut. The nut is the female piece that threads onto the bolt. So, I have the bolt, but I have lost its nut. I go looking along the road for a nut because I need one. Then I find a nut and discover that it will not easily thread onto the bolt. But I force it on. Yes, I make it fit, but it is not the right nut for that bolt.
When I find the right nut, it will fit perfectly. What I mean is that, when the events come, they will fit the prophecy perfectly. At present, however, we are forcing events to fit. That is what I want to tell you. This is the precious conclusion we can draw from this passage. And now we continue. Saint Cyril gives us the characteristics of the Antichrist. All the Fathers of our Church describe these characteristics, especially Saint John of Damascus. Everyone—every single Father who deals with the Antichrist—gives the same characteristics. From where do they draw them? It is very simple: from Daniel, from the Prophet Daniel. In other words, they draw them from Holy Scripture and present these characteristics to us.
Please listen to them. They are very important, because it is by these characteristics that we will judge. Deception is at work here: people will be led astray because these characteristics appear very admirable. “At first he will feign gentleness, presenting himself as a learned and prudent man, and will pretend to possess chastity and benevolence. By false signs and wonders produced through magical deception, he will deceive the Jews into believing that he is the expected Christ. Afterward, he will assume every mark of cruelty and lawlessness, surpassing in wickedness all the unrighteous and ungodly men who came before him,” and so forth.
He says that the Antichrist will appear as a ruler of great gentleness. Magnanimous! Great-hearted, let us say. Two opposing parties come before him, two peoples in conflict. “Come now,” he will tell them, “make peace; there is no reason for you to be at odds.” He will appear gentle and wonderful. Indeed, gentleness in a leader—especially a leader of the highest rank who possesses extensive authority—is an extremely important virtue of governance. Gentleness is very important. His second characteristic is that he will be learned and educated.
Learned—the word means precisely that. He will be learned and educated, no ordinary man. Worse still, he will be prudent: a man possessing sound judgment and discernment.
He will reason things through. He will say, “Why should this be done in one way and not in another? Would this not be the wiser course?” No virtue could be greater in a leader than prudence. Prudence is a great virtue. Worse still, he will possess chastity. Now, what does “chastity” mean here? The Greek word sophrosyne has two meanings. In ancient Greek it meant having one’s faculties sound and whole—that is the original meaning of sophrosyne: possessing unimpaired judgment, and it referred to the nous, the spiritual intellect. Later, the word sophrosyne came to mean purity in sexual matters. A man who is not a womanizer, sexually corrupt, or licentious is called chaste; he possesses sophrosyne. This is the word’s second meaning. If you ask me which meaning we should choose here, the first or the second, we should choose the second. Why? The Prophet Daniel helps us. What does the Prophet Daniel tell us?
He says that the Antichrist will be extraordinarily continent, even to the point of despising women. He will not approach a woman. Thus we should understand sophrosyne here as sexual self-restraint. No adornment could be more beautiful, splendid, or admirable in a leader than to be a self-controlled man—to be devoted to his wife and children and not run after women here and there. You know how often our leaders suffer from a lack of sophrosyne in this narrow, modern sense of the term. You know how greatly they suffer from it. And so, here is a leader who will be gentle, learned, and prudent.
Pure! A wonderful man! Tell me, who would not say that this is the man whose coming history had been awaiting—especially when, as I told you yesterday, he comes to unite the peoples? Indeed, I will read to you here from the ninth paragraph, which we discussed last year: “For the devil prepares divisions among the peoples, so that the one who is coming may be readily welcomed.” Notice something that seems contradictory here: the devil prepares divisions among the peoples so that the one who is coming, the Antichrist, may be welcomed and readily accepted. What does one thing have to do with the other? It is very simple. He will find humanity shattered into pieces,
tearing itself apart. We see this today, as people have always seen it. Then the devil—or rather the Antichrist—will come and say, “I will unite you by making the whole earth a single state.” You know that some of our own politicians—I will not mention names, of course—have said this again and again, whether the occasion called for it or not, declaring in their public messages that humanity can be saved only if there is one world government. It has been said repeatedly; yet it was foretold by Saint Cyril,
or, more precisely, by the Spirit of God through the Fathers and in Holy Scripture. It was foretold. Now, would you imagine that those who say these things have read Holy Scripture and are servants of the Scriptures? No, it is something else. They are simply speaking of what is coming. Today we see the whole inhabited world truly preparing to surrender itself to a single government. We might say that today there are only two blocs. Once there were many separate nations. When the First World War took place, and when the Second World War took place, we did not have blocs of this kind. These blocs emerged after the Second World War. Essentially there are about two—or two and a half, if you prefer—roughly two. We call them East and West.
“For God’s sake, let us disarm, lest something terrible break out.” The Antichrist will therefore come and say, “Do you want to destroy yourselves? Is that prudent? The destruction of humanity would be a terrible thing. No, gentlemen, there will be no Eastern bloc and Western bloc. There will be one state. The whole earth will be one nation, and then, automatically, we will have no more wars.” Did you hear that? It is written. You can see it being prepared in actual events, just as Saint Cyril says here: “The devil prepares it.” Consequently, is not such a unity essentially a preparation of the way for the Antichrist? This is what should truly frighten us. Do you see?
He says that the Antichrist will feign benevolence. All the Fathers say this. He will appear benevolent and concerned for humanity: “Why should these people suffer, and why should those people suffer?” His personality will then be completed by his ability to perform miracles
false wonders, because he will be a magician. “By signs and wonders, false ones produced through magical deception, he will deceive the Jews into believing that he is the Christ they are awaiting,” and so on. In other words, he will also perform miracles. But these miracles will be false. I will not dwell any longer on these false miracles.
A little further on, Saint Cyril again speaks to us about these signs and wonders in his fourteenth catechesis—excuse me, in his fourteenth paragraph—so I will pass over them here. Forgive me; I will pass over them. Do not forget that it is nearly midnight, and the mind is not working well. Now then, what does he say next? He says that afterward, when this seemingly wonderful man has seized power and established sole rule—the age-old dream of the Zionists, the age-old dream of the Zionists, for that is what the Zionists are counting on and pursuing—then Zionism is the great danger to humanity.

ο προφήτης, προφήτης του μέλλοντος και προφήτης πιθανότατα του παρελθόντος. Του μέλλοντος, όταν είπε, βλέποντας τη γυναίκα: «Αυτή», λέει, «είναι σαρξ εκ της σαρκός μου». Είναι δε και προφήτης του παρόντος, του παρελθόντος και του μέλλοντος. Του παρόντος προφητεία, διότι ήταν σε έκσταση, σε ύπνωση ο Αδάμ. Πού εγνώριζε ότι η Εύα δημιουργήθηκε από αυτόν; Πού το εγνώριζε; «Αυτή», λέει, «είναι από την πλευρά μου, είναι οστούν εκ των οστέων μου». Η προφητεία του μέλλοντος: «Διά τούτο καταλείψει άνθρωπος τον πατέρα αυτού και τη μητέρα και προσκολληθήσεται τη ιδία γυναικί και έσονται οι δύο εις σάρκα μίαν». Θέλετε δε την εγκυρότητα;
Επιτέλους, πότε θα έρθει αυτός ο Μεσσίας; Αρχίζουν να βγάζουν, βέβαια, παραπλανητικά συμπεράσματα, πλανώνται και πλανούν και λέγουν ότι είναι ένας λαός. Και ποιος είναι αυτός ο λαός; Ο λαός του Ισραήλ. Αυτός, λέγει, θα ελευθερωθεί και θα ελευθερώσει ολόκληρη τη γη, μάλλον θα σκλαβώσει ολόκληρη τη γη, διότι ο σιωνισμός δεν έχει άλλον σκοπό παρά να κατακτήσει όλο τον πλανήτη μας. Βλέπετε ερμηνείες. Ε, λοιπόν, επειδή είναι κολλημένοι σε αυτές τις ερμηνείες οι ταλαίπωροι Εβραίοι, γι' αυτόν τον λόγο, αγαπητοί μου, όταν θα έρθει ο Αντίχριστος, θα τον θεωρήσουν ότι είναι ο Μεσσίας. Γιατί θα ανταποκριθεί στις προσδοκίες τους. Ποιες προσδοκίες;
Συναιτώνω. Θα λέει: «Γιατί να γίνει αυτό έτσι και να μη γίνει έτσι; Δεν είναι πιο φρόνιμο αυτό;» Δεν θα υπήρχε μεγαλύτερη αρετή για εκείνον που είναι ηγέτης από του να έχει φρόνηση. Σπουδαία αρετή η φρόνηση. Ακόμα χειρότερα, θα έχει σωφροσύνη. Τι είναι τώρα η σωφροσύνη; Βέβαια, η λέξη σωφροσύνη έχει δύο σημασίες. Η αρχαιοελληνική έννοια είναι ο έχων σώας τας φρένας. Αυτό θα πει η σωφροσύνη, δηλαδή αυτός που έχει ακεραίαν φρόνησιν, και αναφέρεται εις τον νουν. Μεταγενέστερα η λέξη σωφροσύνη επήρε τη σημασία του αγνού ανθρώπου ως προς το γενετήσιο. Ο άνθρωπος που δεν είναι γυναικάς, δεν είναι έκφυλος, δεν είναι ασελγής, αυτός λέγεται σώφρων, έχει σωφροσύνη. Είναι η δευτέρα σημασία της λέξεως σωφροσύνη. Αν με ρωτήσετε τώρα ποια θα πάρουμε έννοια, την πρώτη ή τη δευτέρα, θα πάρουμε τη δευτέρα. Γιατί; Μας βοηθάει ο Προφήτης Δανιήλ. Τι μας λέει ο Προφήτης Δανιήλ;
Προς Θεού, να κάνουμε αφοπλισμό, μήπως ξεσπάσει κάτι φοβερό. Θα έρθει λοιπόν ο Αντίχριστος να πει: «Θέλετε να καταστραφείτε; Φρόνιμο είναι αυτό; Είναι φοβερά πράγματα να καταστραφεί η ανθρωπότητα. Όχι, κύριοι, δεν θα υπάρχει ανατολικός και δυτικός συνασπισμός. Θα υπάρχει ένα κράτος. Όλη η γη θα είναι ένα έθνος. Οπότε αυτομάτως δεν θα έχουμε πολέμους». Το ακούσατε; Είναι γραμμένο. Το βλέπετε στα πράγματα να προετοιμάζεται, όπως λέει εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλλος: «Προετοιμάζει», λέει, «ο διάβολος». Συνεπώς, μια τέτοια ενότητα ουσιαστικά δεν είναι μια προοδοποίησις Αντιχρίστου; Και αυτό είναι εκείνο το οποίο πράγματι πρέπει να μας τρομάξει. Βλέπετε;
