Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that the Antichrist will precede Christ’s Second Coming, after which creation will be renewed and the Kingdom of God fully revealed. Believers should fear participation in this pervasive spirit more than speculate about the Antichrist’s birthplace, identity, or political location. Because even prominent clergy and apparent elect may be deceived, Christians must remain grounded in Holy Scripture, the Church Fathers, Orthodox doctrine, repentance, and vigilance.

Once again, my beloved, we find ourselves in the wonderful meadow of the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. If you remember, we had stopped at his fifteenth catechesis. We had reached the ninth paragraph, with only five or six lines left before the paragraph ends. The whole subject Saint Cyril addresses in his fifteenth catechesis is
the renewal of the universe, the appearance of the Antichrist, and Christ’s Second Coming. I have not mentioned them in chronological order, but this is the order in which he treats them. He speaks about the renewal of the universe and says here, most beautifully, that the world will be made new. But before the world is made new, the Antichrist will come. And after him, Christ will come at His Second Coming. Then history will come to an end, and the Kingdom of God will begin. We have already examined many important and remarkable points in this most significant catechesis.
Of course, we still have much more to say. And as you will see, his every word and every phrase is full of meaning and substance. That is why, of course, we cannot rush through texts such as these.
Let me read it to you: “And for the present, he has begun little by little to send out his own forerunners. He is now ready to come for the prey. Watch yourself, O man, and keep your soul secure.” Where I began, there is of course a full stop at the end of the preceding sentence. But to understand the meaning, as you can see, we must go back to what came before. It refers to the warning that the faithful must receive concerning the coming of the Antichrist. That is why he says that the Antichrist “has begun to send out his own forerunners.”
The Antichrist, he says, has begun to send out his own forerunners, so that when he comes, everything will be ready for him to carry out his work unhindered. “He is now ready to come for the prey”—to seize his quarry in the hunt. “Watch yourself”: therefore, O man, pay attention to yourself and safeguard your soul. These are the forerunners of the Antichrist. But how can the Antichrist send out his forerunners when we know that he has not yet come? And since he will be a human person, John the Evangelist says that the number chi-xi-stigma,
666, is “the number of a man.” He says so plainly. And yet we hear all sorts of foolish claims that it means this or that. Indeed, I recently heard yet another one: that because it is a number, it represents the age of computers. In other words, the Antichrist is not a person; he simply represents the technology of our age known as computers or information technology. That, they say, is the Antichrist—and I heard it from the mouth of a university professor. So be it. The point is that theology is needed as well. The point, my beloved, is that none of this is the kind of thing
that... They have not read Holy Scripture even at the most basic level. You may ask, “Is that possible?” Listen: they have not read Holy Scripture even at the most basic level. This is neither the way nor the time for me to tell you why. The point is that, as John Chrysostom says, through ignorance of the Scriptures “the corruption of heresies entered in, together with a depraved way of life,” and this ignorance of the Scriptures “has turned everything upside down.” Ignorance of the Scriptures has overturned everything. And so, my beloved, the Antichrist is a man. All the Fathers who studied the Scriptures most profoundly
—if only we had their eyes, the eyes with which they saw the Scriptures! And we can have their eyes, for they are nothing other than the eyes of the Holy Spirit. If we spend our time immersed in their works, and if we have nepsis, watchfulness, and zeal, then we too will acquire the eyes of the Fathers—that is, the eyes of the Holy Spirit. And we will see that the Antichrist truly is a man. John the Evangelist says it plainly: “It is the number of a man.” But then, we ask, where is this man? How can he send out his forerunners when he has not yet come?
For example, John the Evangelist writes something related to this. Then, in the fourth century, Saint Cyril writes these words and says that the Antichrist is sending out his forerunners. Even today we do not know whether the Antichrist is alive or not. How could we know? I will repeat what I told you last year. Pay attention: the rumor that the Antichrist has been born is deceptive. My beloved, the Antichrist will be recognized by the characteristics revealed in the Word of God. How, then, can we say that he has been born? How do we know? This shows you how groundless such a claim is and how much danger it carries. Therefore, since he is a man, I ask again: how does he send out his forerunners?
Does the Antichrist send out his forerunners? Behind both the Antichrist and his forerunners stands the devil. Do not forget that unholy trinity described in the Apocalypse. There is the fiery dragon, the red dragon, who sought to devour the male Child of the woman whom John the Evangelist saw in a vision in heaven, standing upon the moon and clothed with the sun. This woman is none other than the Theotokos, the God-bearer, and the Church—the Theotokos and the Church. And the male Child is God the Word (Logos) made flesh.
The dragon sought, it says, to devour Him. This was the whole effort of Satan to frustrate the work of Jesus Christ. Throughout Christ’s life, from the moment He was born... Who, we might ask, was the first forerunner of the Antichrist in the time of Christ? Herod. But who stood behind Herod? The devil—that fiery, red dragon. And he is called red because, as the Lord says, the devil was a murderer from the beginning. He is therefore red with the blood of the people he kills, spiritually or even literally, if you will.
He is the originator of death. The devil is the originator of death. So, behind the Antichrist stands the devil. The third person of this unholy trinity is the false prophet, and he too will be a man. But both the second and the third will be inspired by the devil. There can be no doubt that the dragon is the devil, because in the Apocalypse John the Evangelist gives him many names that clearly identify him. What does he call him? The dragon, the devil, the ancient serpent, and so forth—he gives five or six such descriptions. Thus, as I have told you, it is not the Antichrist who is now sending out the forerunners; he may not even have been born yet. It is the devil who sends them, to prepare the ground for the Antichrist’s coming, so that he may use that prepared ground and carry out his work more effectively. It is not the Antichrist, but the ancient devil. Therefore, when Saint Cyril speaks here about forerunners, we could say that these forerunners are bearers—and please pay close attention to this—bearers of the spirit
of the Antichrist. They are bearers of the spirit of the Antichrist. This is what concerns us, and I want you to understand it, because we are terrified. Many people, as you may not realize, have actually become ill with fear: “The Antichrist is coming! What will we do? What will happen?” And yet we are sailing upon an ocean of the spirit of the Antichrist without realizing it. I told you this last year, and I have told you again and again. What a strange thing: we fear the person of the Antichrist, yet remain unconcerned about the spirit of the Antichrist. And the spirit of the Antichrist seeks to keep us far from Christ. Moreover, the spirit of the Antichrist is
a way of life that, in actual practice, amounts to a denial of Jesus Christ. Would you like me to give you the definition of the Antichrist? John the Evangelist gives it. Who, he asks, becomes an Antichrist? “Who is the liar, if not the one who denies?” That is exactly how he puts it. It is the one who denies that Christ came in the flesh—that is, the one who denies the true incarnation of God. Who is the Antichrist? The one who denies the true divinity of Christ. Therefore, if I deny
Christ’s divine nature, as Arius denied it, I am an Antichrist. That is why I told you once last year—or rather, I told you while we were interpreting the Apocalypse—that Saint Justin Popovich regards Judas as an Antichrist, Arius as an Antichrist, and so forth, and readily says the same of the secularized forms of Western Christianity. Does that surprise you? It is because Arius denied the divine nature of Christ and thus, quite literally, fulfills John the Evangelist’s definition of the Antichrist. Conversely, denying Christ’s human nature—claiming that God did not truly become man but only appeared to do so, merely in seeming, which is Docetism and later develops into what is called Monophysitism—is likewise nothing other than an antichristian spirit and an antichristian position. What is the Orthodox position? That Jesus Christ—that Jesus is the Christ, meaning the Messiah—and that He is the God-Man. We would call this the divine-human person of Jesus Christ.
Do we not say that short, simple prayer, so full of power: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”? In it we confess, in an Orthodox manner, the divine-human person of Christ. By saying “Lord,” we confess His divinity; by saying “Jesus,” we confess His humanity; and by saying “Christ,” we confess His title, His plan, His purpose, and His work upon earth—that is, His work of redemption. Who, then, is Jesus? He is the God-Man, God who became man and came to save us. It is He whom we invoke. Upon this confession—that Christ is perfect God, perfect man, and the Christ, meaning the Redeemer—we rest, rely, base, and establish our plea, “Have mercy on me.” If the person of Christ is not divine and human, then “Have mercy on me” falls into the void and has no value. The plea “Have mercy on me” has meaning only when I accept the divine-human person of Christ. Therefore, the forerunners of the Antichrist are those who deny either the divine or the human nature of Christ. After all, the very title says it: Antichrist. That is,
one who denies Christ. And how can I deny Christ? Not only in the realm of faith, but also in the way I live. I have already explained denial in the realm of faith, and you have seen it clearly. Let me say it once more: it includes all those who proclaim that Christ is not God, or—more commonly, if you will—who accept His human nature, but do not accept that God became man, and so deny His divinity. And do you know who all those people are who deny Christ’s human nature—or rather, who deny Christ’s divine nature?
Who are they? Not the atheists.
They are the ones who tell you, “Jesus Christ was a great man, certainly great, but He was not God.” There are many of them—many. Marxism, Freemasonry, and Theosophy deny Christ’s divine nature. These are theoretical positions of denial and are therefore expressions of the spirit of the Antichrist. Clearly—perfectly clearly, clearer than clear. Do you understand what the spirit of the Antichrist is? It is this, and it abounds in our own age, in the age before ours, in the one before that, and in the ages that will follow. It is abundant and overflowing—an ocean.
We are swimming in this spirit of the Antichrist, both in the realm of faith and in the way we live. Now listen. The Apostle Paul speaks to the Philippians about those who deny Christ in practice. He is speaking about Christians, and he says concerning them: “I told you about them when I was in Philippi, and now, as I write to you, I write with tears”—about the enemies of the Cross of Christ, the enemies of the Cross of Christ—“whose”—a plural relative pronoun, with a rough breathing and circumflex—“whose god is their belly.”
My belly is my god. “Belly” is a general expression describing, as you know, the materialistic person. The materialistic person is concerned with the belly and what lies below the belly—with the stomach and the lower parts of the body. That is the materialistic person. When God said to the serpent, the devil, “You shall crawl upon the earth and eat dust all the days of your life”—this is in the Book of Genesis—what does it mean that he would crawl and eat dust, since the devil was not a snake? The devil is the devil; the devil is a spirit. It means that the devil’s whole disposition will always be
materialistic, never spiritual. Never. The devil takes delight and pleasure in living through material things, though he himself is not material, and in experiencing bodily pleasures, though he has no body. He does this by dwelling within people whom he incites to live in a materialistic and degraded way. So the person whose whole outlook is, “Let us eat and drink; let us enjoy life and not worry about anything”—this materialistic way of life... What does Holy Scripture say about the people in the days of Noah? “My Holy Spirit shall not remain with them.” Why?
“Because they are flesh.” What does that mean? It means that they are carnal people. Here, “flesh” does not mean the body itself. Who created the flesh? Was it not Christ, as God the Word (Logos)? Would He contradict and condemn Himself? Obviously not. It refers to the way a person lives; that is what it means to be carnal. It does not mean that I will cease to have flesh and a body, but concerns the way I live. Therefore, those who live carnally and materialistically deny God. What does Saint Paul call them? “Enemies of the Cross of Christ.” The Apostle Paul says it clearly—absolutely clearly. Therefore, they are already living according to the spirit of the Antichrist.
What is this way of life in practice? It is antichristianity put into practice—the Antichrist lived out in practice. So, you see, I can deny Christ on the theoretical level by denying either His divine nature or His human nature, and I can deny Him on the practical level by the way I choose to live. Well, what do you say to that? Tell me: are not the forerunners of the Antichrist—this spirit of denial in both doctrine and practice—abundant everywhere? Yet this is not what we fear. This is what we ought to fear, but instead we fear the person of the Antichrist.
After all, where will the person of the Antichrist find me if I go into hiding? Where will he find me? I can flee to the mountains, if you like. Where will he find me? He is one person. However many agents he may have, can I not go somewhere and hide? Let us look at it that way. But can you hide from the spirit of the Antichrist? You are swimming in the spirit of the Antichrist, my brother. Do we not live in the world? Do we not live according to the mentality of the world? And what is this worldly mentality, this worldly-mindedness? It is the spirit of the Antichrist. Yet we imagine that we are not worshipping the Antichrist even while we live in a worldly way. This is what should terrify us. I will say it once again: this is what should terrify us. I beg you
to understand this, so that we do not lie back comfortably and say, “Ah, and how old am I now? Sixty? Seventy? Well, by the time the Antichrist comes, I shall already be dead.” You have drunk from the cup of the Antichrist, my brother. You have tasted his coming through the way his forerunners have been unleashed into this world through Satan. And make no mistake: you have worshipped the Antichrist; you have worshipped him. So, am I being clear? I am telling you plainly. I have made myself clear; I have declared it openly. Let no one say, “I did not know; I never heard it.” I am telling you now.
“Watch yourself, O man, and safeguard your soul.” What does he say? “Watch yourself.” Notice that he does not say, “Watch to see where the Antichrist is.” Where do people say he is? In Brussels, Paris, New York, Moscow, Beijing, or Tokyo? Take care. Certainly, the Antichrist will be somewhere when he arrives, since he will be a human being. They say that the EEC building has the number 666 displayed at its top. Yes. These things, my dear friends, are very important. But I...
I place the emphasis—as you can see written here—on the person himself and on how he will stand. What does the text say? “Watch yourself.” To watch means to take heed. “See,” from the verb “to see,” means “take care.” “Take heed,” says the Lord; “be careful.” We use the verb “to see” in this sense even in our own language. We tell someone, “Look, keep your eyes wide open,” or, “See that you do this carefully,” meaning, “Take care.” Take heed to yourself. “Watch yourself, O man.” Therefore, I have only to look within myself. What must I do? The very thing the Pharisees once misunderstood.
They thought that the Kingdom of God would come with outward signs and commotion: that someone would suddenly appear, create a revolutionary movement, seize power, and drive out the occupying forces. But the Lord answered, “The Kingdom of God does not come with observation.” Here, “observation” means with outward spectacle—with cavalry, armies, companies, regiments, shields, helmets, cannons, airplanes, bombs, and missiles. No. The Kingdom of God is within us. In other words, you yourself must be changed.
Do you want the Kingdom of God to be established within you, so that, once it is established, there will be no room or place there for the Antichrist? “Watch yourself.” Take heed to yourself. Did you hear that? Does God not say through Moses, “Take heed to yourself and guard your soul diligently”? Saint Basil the Great wrote an entire treatise on the words “Take heed to yourself”—and “yourself” there is in the dative case. An entire treatise. Take heed to yourself and guard your soul with the utmost care.
My dear friends, this is what we must do. We worry about what is going to happen, but we do not worry about becoming more spiritual people. Do you not find that strange? I am telling you this openly and forcefully, on the authority of the text. And now, my dear friends, let us continue.
“The Church now solemnly bears witness to you before the living God. Before the Antichrist appears, she tells you beforehand what concerns him. Whether this will happen in your lifetime, we do not know; whether it will happen after your time, we do not know. But it is good for you to know these things beforehand, so that you may secure yourself in advance.” And now the Church solemnly bears witness before the living God and foretells these things to you before they happen—all that concerns the Antichrist. Whether
the Antichrist will come in your own lifetime, we do not know. Whether the Antichrist will come after your time, we do not know. It is good for us to know all these things, so that we may secure ourselves beforehand.
“The Church now solemnly bears witness to you before the living God.” She bears witness solemnly. This means that she gives her testimony in an emphatic way. That is the meaning of the verb “to bear solemn witness.” In the New Testament as well, this verb means to testify, to bear witness. But notice—and I say it again—it means to give one’s testimony with great force. Saint Cyril is saying that the Church comes forward and preaches a powerful message to you. She tells you everything fully, forcefully, and clearly before God. Take heed. Thank you.
I will now raise a painful question. I do so with great sorrow, but I will raise it. Of course, I personally am telling you these things here—but am I, by myself, the Church? We are indeed speaking within this church building. And anyone else who, within a church of God or in any other place, but in the name of the Church and as an Orthodox Christian, warns the people of God about this matter is also speaking. But the painful question—and I am sorry to say it—is this: has the official administration of the Church
informed the people of God? No. We might ask: what is it waiting for? I do not know. I do not know. Do you know how many people are saying this? I am not telling you anything new. You yourselves should be the first to understand it, because you are living through it. Why does the Church not publish a book or an encyclical, so that we may know what to do and how to stand before this great issue? The subject has received widespread attention throughout the world. What is strange is that this interest began in America, and especially among Protestants.
Whatever has been written has appeared in Protestant books. Yet I do not know what has been written from an Orthodox perspective. Books have indeed been written, but by private individuals, so to speak—well-intentioned people who set out to write a book and inform the faithful. One, two, three, four, five books have appeared. They were recently published and are now in circulation. But the personal element is often present, because such a book is not the product of a collective judgment, whereas the Church always rests upon a collective decision.
She rests upon Ecumenical Councils and local synods. If I say something, a person could accept my words without reservation only if I were a saint. But can I not make a mistake? Am I not human? I could make errors of interpretation, especially on matters so difficult and important. This does not mean, of course, that anyone intends to become a heretic—God forbid. A person is human and may make some mistake. One mistake does not make someone a heretic. No, God forbid, no. But persistence in error is what constitutes heresy. Why, then, should there not be a collective answer to this matter? It is a collective answer that we are speaking about.
Why should the Synod of the Church—that is, the hierarchy of the Church—not come forward and say, “Faithful flock bearing the name of Christ, people of God, this is how the matter stands”? I have seen nothing of the kind, unless something has been done that you know about and I do not. Nothing has been done. This, then, is something important, because Saint Cyril comes and says, “The Church solemnly bears witness to you.” She gives you her testimony emphatically. But today the Church does not give her testimony emphatically.
Yet something lies hidden here. Do not let your thoughts run too far—or rather, I must stress that it would be very dangerous for your thoughts to slide beyond what I am about to say. What do I mean? If you remember, when we were interpreting the Apocalypse, we asked where the Antichrist would take his seat—in which temple of God. And we saw what Saint Cyril says. In which temple? “Here,” he says, “in this very church where we are giving these catechetical lectures.” And do you know which church that was? It was the church we used to visit before going on to Jerusalem—that is, the Church of the Resurrection. It had already been built, and Saint Cyril’s catechetical lectures were being delivered there. “Here,” he says, “the Antichrist will come and take his seat,” just as the Apostle Paul says in his Epistle to the Thessalonians.
Will he sit in this temple of God? Or will he sit in Solomon’s Temple—will he rebuild it and there proclaim himself to be God? Arethas, an interpreter of the Apocalypse who draws upon Saint Andrew of Caesarea, speaks of this. Saint Andrew of Caesarea did nothing more than gather together what earlier Fathers before him had written, whatever scattered material he could find concerning the Apocalypse. In which temple will he sit? He says that the Antichrist could even sit in the church of Constantinople. And he is right. For if a Patriarch is a heretic, then is not the Antichrist also sitting in that temple of God?
But the matter goes deeper. We must know that Daniel, in one of his visions, saw the dragon—the devil, that monstrous being, I repeat—raise his tail figuratively as high as the stars of heaven. And with one sweep of his tail, a third of the stars fell. What are these stars? Listen to how Christ speaks of the image described by Daniel: “When those deceivers come, they will deceive, if possible, even the elect.”
The stars are a symbol, an image of the elect and of those in high positions. So the devil’s tail reaches them and casts them down. This is, indeed, a sign of the last days, though it does not apply exclusively to them. It has happened in the past, it is happening in the present, and it will happen in the future. There are many people in high positions who have become entangled in various forms of ecumenism and other strange things—high-ranking clergy who, in essence, have betrayed the Church. Tell me, will these people now...
come forward to speak and bear forceful witness against the spirit of the Antichrist and against the antichrists? Never. They themselves live according to the spirit of the Antichrist. What witness could they possibly give? What I have said is painful. These are things over which we should weep day and night. When you weep over such matters, you become deeply sorrowful. I do not hide this from you, my beloved. By nature, I am not a melancholy person. Yet I become sorrowful when I think about these things—sometimes for hours, sometimes for an entire day, and sometimes for two or three days. I fall silent and grieve when I think about these conditions; I tell you this openly.
I grieve over this Antichrist; I grieve over these things, because the conquest is already taking place before the Antichrist has even come. This is what should shake us, make us weep, and fill us with sorrow. Thank you. So then, should we always wait for someone else to point out the right path to us? I have told you this before—yesterday and the day before, and yesterday morning at our monastery.
From time to time I tell you that we are hurrying to offer you at least a little of the Word of God, just a little of the Word of God, and others are hurrying as well. And when I tell you that one day the Word of God will no longer be heard, I do not merely mean that it will not be heard at all, but that the Orthodox Word of God will not be heard. Something presented as the word of God may still be heard, but it will not truly be the Word of God. So when reassuring voices arise to put the people at ease, saying, “This is nothing; that is nothing; this comes from God,” what then? Saint Cyril says, “The Church bears solemn witness to you before the living God.” Can we simply reassure the people and say, “Oh, this is nothing; that is nothing”? I do not wish to say anything more. I have only given you a hint. You yourselves can now reflect on the wider implications.
Do not allow your imagination to slip any further and lead you to condemn people, circumstances, or institutions. Let us only be watchful, my beloved—only watchful, nothing more. And may God illumine all those who shepherd the Church of Christ, so that they may shepherd her in a manner pleasing to God and in the Orthodox faith; may they always proclaim what is right, always sound the alarm when danger approaches, and blow the trumpet before the enemy comes, so that the people of God may be guarded. For God says to the Prophet, “I have appointed you a watchman”; I have made you a guard. If you sound the trumpet and the other person remains asleep, that person is responsible for his own soul. But if you do not sound it...
“From your hand,” He says, “I shall require the blood of that lost soul.” This is why I told you that we must have the fear of God, without yielding to pressure or to all the strange and irresponsible claims being circulated. We must have the fear of God, lest we worship the Antichrist by remaining within the spirit of the Antichrist. “The Church now bears solemn witness to you before the living God. She tells you beforehand about the Antichrist, before he comes.” Do you see? She tells you in advance, before these things concerning the Antichrist take place. Why? Because the people of God must...
not be caught unaware. You know that Satan’s greatest weapon is surprise. A believer who is prepared and is not taken by surprise does not fall easily. It is the same with an army that remains alert. Even if the enemy launches a surprise attack, the troops are ready, with their fingers on the trigger; they are prepared, and so they are not truly caught by surprise. To be caught by surprise means that I have lain down to sleep and have even taken off my boots. I am reminded of something that happened one night when we were told not to take off our boots—and, of course, I took mine off.
I placed them deceptively at the edge of my blanket so that it would look as though I was still wearing them, although I had taken them off. Then, at a certain moment, I realized that the inspecting officer was approaching. He asked the sentry outside the guard post, “Are the soldiers wearing their boots?” The sentry answered, “They are.” I heard this, but how could I put mine on? There was no time. I lay completely still beneath my blanket. The officer came in with great ceremony and pulled the blanket away, leaving my bare feet sticking out beside my boots. Of course, I pretended to remain asleep the whole time. Well, the next day he filed a report. This is what it means to be ready: do not sleep, and keep your boots on. My beloved, such readiness is a great thing. Do you know how Christ expressed it?
“Keep watch. What I say to you, I say to all”—forgive me—“What I say to you, I say to all: keep watch.” In other words, remain awake, so that you are not caught by surprise. “Whether these things will happen in your own time, we do not know; whether they will happen after you, we do not know. But it is good, since you know them, to secure yourself beforehand.” Do you see the important expressions: “secure yourself beforehand,” “tells you beforehand,” and “before he comes,” so that you will not be overtaken unexpectedly? And now, my beloved, we come to the next point.
“Do not look downward toward the earth, then; for the Lord descends from heaven—not alone, as before, but accompanied by countless hosts and escorted by myriads of angels. Nor does He come hidden, like rain upon a fleece, but shining openly like lightning.”
“For it is written: ‘As lightning comes from the east and is visible even to the west, so also will be the Second Coming of the Son of Man.’ And again: ‘They will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with power and great glory, and He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet,’ and so forth.” In other words, Christ—the true Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God—does not come from the earth.
If someone appears in the desert, caught up in fantasies and delusions, do not go out and say that Christ is there. If they tell you, “Yes, Christ is there,” do not believe that Christ is there. Do not believe them. Do not look down toward the earth. Christ comes from heaven—not alone, as He came at His first coming, but escorted by myriads of angels. Nor will He come secretly, like the rain falling upon the fleece, upon the wool. Gideon’s prophetic test was a type—a foreshadowing of Christ—which he had requested; and you know that dew falls without making any sound.
“But He will shine openly like lightning.” Just as lightning flashes from one end of the sky to the other, so He comes and becomes visible to everyone. For He Himself said, “As lightning comes from the east and is visible even to the west, so also will be the Second Coming of the Son of Man.” And again, they will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with the great power of angels and with great glory, and He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet, and so forth. This entire paragraph, which I have read to you in full—the tenth paragraph—explains where Christ will come from and where the Antichrist will come from.
The Antichrist comes from the earth. Christ comes from heaven. Therefore, if the Antichrist proclaims himself to be God and the Messiah—and that is what he will do—do not believe him. He will not be the Messiah, because his point of origin will not be the one foretold. Do you understand the criterion? His point of origin will not be the one foretold. He will come from the earth, whereas Christ comes from heaven. Everything Saint Cyril says here was first said by Christ. They will tell you, “Christ, the Messiah, is in the desert.” Do not go out to see him or welcome him. They will say, “He is in that house; he is in that city.” Do not go!
Do not believe it. In the Apocalypse, where do the three beasts—the red Beast, the dragon, the second Beast, and the false prophet—come from? The dragon, the devil, is said to come from the air, indicating that the devil is a spirit. As the Apostle Paul says, he belongs to “the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places,” in the space surrounding us. Take note: this surrounding realm is Satan’s dwelling place. The devil has fallen from heaven; the devil is not in heaven. Scripture speaks of “the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” “Our struggle,” it says, “is not against flesh and blood”—that is, it is against the demons who inhabit the surrounding realm. But the other Beast, the second, came up from the sea. This is the Antichrist; he came up, it says, from the sea. The sea symbolizes the disorder of the nations and therefore belongs to the earth—for where is the sea? Is it not on the earth? The third Beast, it says, comes up from the dry land. This means that neither the second nor the third comes from heaven. Therefore, the Antichrist will not come from heaven.
There will be no spectacular descent. He will be born naturally of a father and a mother, and he will become what he will become. Therefore, when this man says, “I am the Messiah,” do not believe him. How will Christ come? He will come from heaven. This is a subtle but essential criterion. And what shall we see, my beloved? First, there will be the resurrection of the dead and the transformation of the universe, and then the coming of Christ. These are no small signs. They provide the assurance that it is truly Christ who is coming.
So then, the Antichrist will proclaim that he is God, but he will not have the scriptural signs or the prophecies in his favor. They will not bear witness to him. We must therefore turn away from him. We will not worship this false Christ, for he will be the Antichrist. And now, my beloved, we come to the next paragraph, the eleventh. “But just as, before He was to become man and be born of a Virgin—the awaited God—the devil maliciously prejudiced the matter beforehand by spreading among the idolaters false stories of gods who begot children and gods who were born of women.
He invented these myths beforehand so that, once falsehood had gained the advantage, the truth might also be disbelieved, as he supposed. In the same way, when Christ is about to come a second time, the adversary will take advantage of the expectation of the innocent—especially the expectation of those of the circumcision—and will raise up a certain man who is a sorcerer, thoroughly skilled in the deceitful wickedness of magical potions and incantations. This man will seize for himself the authority of the Roman Empire and falsely call himself Christ. By taking the name of Christ, he will deceive the Jews who are still awaiting the one who is to come, while subjecting the Gentiles through magical illusions.” In other words...
The devil, he says,
seeing that the Son of God was going to become incarnate and be born of a Virgin—how did he know this? He heard it from God in Paradise. And from whom, from which Person, did he hear it? From God the Word (Logos), the very One who was to become incarnate. For He told him that from the woman, from her seed, would be born the One who would crush his head, while “he will watch for His heel.” He did not say, “from the seed of Adam,” but “from the seed of the woman.” A woman does not have seed. Therefore, what is meant and foreshadowed here? The Virgin Birth.
Saint Ignatius says that the devil searched among the virgins to discover which one would give birth. But “the childbearing of Mary escaped his notice.” Pay attention to this: it escaped him; Saint Ignatius says so plainly. This teaching agrees with Holy Scripture, and especially with the Apocalypse, which says that he was preparing to seize the Child. Look: it says that he was watching the woman who was pregnant and in labor, but the Child was born and caught up, and he accomplished nothing; he was too late. This points to Saint Ignatius of Antioch’s interpretation: that the devil searched among the virgins to discover which one would give birth. This is significant, because the birth of Christ took place…

—που μακάρι να είχαμε τα μάτια τους, το πώς είδαν την Γραφή· και μπορούμε να τα έχουμε τα μάτια τους, γιατί δεν είναι παρά τα μάτια του Αγίου Πνεύματος—, εάν περνούμε τον καιρό μας μέσα στα έργα τους, τότε θα αποκτήσουμε, εάν έχουμε νήψη, εάν έχουμε ζήλο, τότε θα αποκτήσουμε τα μάτια των Πατέρων, ήτοι τα μάτια του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Και θα δούμε ότι πράγματι ο Αντίχριστος είναι ένας άνθρωπος. Το λέει σαφώς ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης: «ἀριθμὸς ἀνθρώπου ἐστίν». Αλλά πού λοιπόν θα είναι ο άνθρωπος, ερωτούμε; Πώς είναι δυνατόν να αποστέλλει τους προδρόμους του, που ακόμη δεν έχει έρθει;
Επί παραδείγματι, γράφει ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης κάτι συναφές, όταν ο Άγιος Κύριλλος τον τέταρτον αιώνα γράφει αυτά και λέγει ότι στέλλει τους προδρόμους του. Ούτε σήμερα ξέρουμε αν ο Αντίχριστος υπάρχει ή δεν υπάρχει. Πού το ξέρουμε; Θα πω άλλη μια φορά αυτό που σας το είπα και πέρυσι. Εκείνη η διάδοση ότι ο Αντίχριστος γεννήθηκε, προσέξτε, είναι παραπλανητική. Αγαπητοί μου, ο Αντίχριστος θα αναγνωριστεί από τα χαρακτηριστικά που αποκαλύπτει ο Λόγος του Θεού. Πώς λοιπόν μπορούμε να λέμε ότι γεννήθηκε; Από πού το ξέρουμε; Για να δείτε το ασύστατο του πράγματος και πόσο υπάρχει κίνδυνος. Συνεπώς, αφού είναι άνθρωπος, θα επαναλάβω: πώς στέλνει τους προδρόμους;
αρνητής του Χριστού. Και πώς μπορώ να αρνηθώ τον Χριστό; Όχι μόνο στον χώρο της πίστεως, αλλά και στον χώρο της ζωής. Και μεν στον χώρο της πίστεως σας το ανέλυσα και το είδατε με σαφήνεια. Θα το πω άλλη μια φορά: όλοι εκείνοι που διακηρύσσουν είτε ότι ο Χριστός δεν είναι Θεός, είτε —μάλιστα αυτό κυρίως, αν θέλετε— την ανθρωπίνη Του φύση τη δέχονται, όχι όμως ότι ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος, αλλά αρνούνται τη Θεότητα. Και ξέρετε ποιοι είναι όλοι εκείνοι που αρνούνται την ανθρωπίνη φύση του Χριστού, ή τη Θεία Φύση καλύτερα του Χριστού;
υλιστικόν, ποτέ πνευματικόν. Ποτέ. Και χαίρεται ο διάβολος και ευχαριστείται ζώντας την ύλη, ενώ δεν είναι υλικός, ζώντας τις ηδονές, ενώ δεν έχει σώμα, ευρισκόμενος μέσα εις τους ανθρώπους που τους βάζει να ζουν κατά υλιστικόν και χαμερπή τρόπο. Άρα, ο άνθρωπος του «να φάμε, του να πιούμε, του πώς θα ζήσουμε και δεν βαριέσαι», ο τρόπος αυτός ο υλιστικός... Τι λέει μάλιστα εκεί για τους ανθρώπους της εποχής του Νώε η Γραφή; Ότι «οὐ μὴ καταμείνῃ τὸ Πνεῦμά μου τὸ Ἅγιον ἐπ' αὐτοῖς». Δεν θα μείνει το Άγιό μου Πνεύμα σ' αυτούς. Γιατί;
Εις αυτόν το ναόν του Θεού θα καθίσει; Άραγε εις τον ναόν του Σολομώντος θα καθίσει, θα τον κτίσει και εκεί θα ανακηρύξει εαυτόν Θεόν; Λέγει ο Αρέθας, ένας ερμηνευτής της Αποκαλύψεως, ο οποίος αντιγράφει τον Άγιο Ανδρέα Καισαρείας. Ο Άγιος Ανδρέας Καισαρείας δεν κάνει παρά μία συναγωγή προηγουμένων, παλαιοτέρων του Πατέρων, ό,τι σκόρπιο βρήκε στο θέμα της Αποκαλύψεως. Σε ποιο ναό, λέει; Ακόμη και εις το ναό της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως μπορεί να καθίσει ο Αντίχριστος. Έχει δίκιο, ναι. Γιατί, εάν ένας πατριάρχης είναι αιρετικός, τότε δεν κάθεται ο Αντίχριστος και εις αυτόν το Ναό του Θεού;
Τις έβαλα ψεύτικα στην άκρη της κουβέρτας, για να φανεί ότι τις φορώ, αλλά τις είχα βγάλει όμως. Και κάποια στιγμή αντιλαμβάνομαι ότι έρχεται ο εφοδεύων. Λέει στον σκοπόν, έξω από το φυλάκιο: «Οι στρατιώτες φοράνε τις αρβύλες;» Λέει: «Φοράνε». Εγώ το ακούω, αλλά πώς να τις βάλω; Δεν είχα καιρό. Έκανα τον ψόφιο στην κουβέρτα μου από κάτω. Έρχεται λοιπόν μεγαλοπρεπώς, τραβάει την κουβέρτα, έμειναν σύξυλα τα ποδάρια μου έξω από τις αρβύλες. Βέβαια, υποτίθεται ότι έκανα πάντα τον κοιμισμένο. Ε, την άλλη μέρα έκαμε αναφορά. Αυτό θα πει να είσαι έτοιμος. Να μην κοιμάσαι και να φοράς τις αρβύλες σου. Αγαπητοί μου, αυτή η ετοιμότης είναι μεγάλο πράγμα. Ξέρετε πώς το είπε ο Χριστός;
