Summary
The lecture surveys biblical and patristic titles for the Antichrist, presenting him as the lawless opponent and false imitator of Christ. Cain and Herod are presented as early bearers of this antichristian spirit, acting under the Devil’s influence against Abel and the incarnate Christ. Because the Antichrist will employ deceptive signs and wonders, Christians are warned against seeking miracles as proof and are urged to remain grounded in faith and spiritual discernment.

We are still in the fifteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. We have reached paragraph nine, and last time we spoke about the names and titles of the Antichrist—that is, names which express the characteristics of this person. I would like to add something to what the Apostle Paul says. You remember that he calls him “the man of lawlessness,” “the son of perdition,” “the adversary who exalts himself above everything called God or an object of worship.” Thus, he gives him four names.
Holy Scripture gives him other names as well, and the Fathers of our Church also give him other names. I will not analyze them; I shall simply mention them. Saint John the Evangelist, in his First Epistle, chapter 4, verse 3, calls him the Antichrist.
That is, he will oppose Christ and set himself against Him; and, as Saint Augustine says, he will be the ape of Christ. He will imitate Christ, but falsely. And he will be the person who, above all others,
stands against Christ. We might say that, just as the holy Apostle Paul calls him “the adversary,” Saint John calls him the Antichrist. For Christ is the stone that has been laid, the living stone upon which the Church is built, and no one can build the Church apart from this stone that has been laid. I am taking this word, “laid,” again from Holy Scripture, from the Apostle Paul. Christ is the One laid as the foundation—the stone laid in its appointed place, the cornerstone. The Antichrist is the one who lies against Him, the one who is not the true foundation stone. Moreover, in Ezekiel 28:2–10, the prophet gives him the title, “I am God.” This same idea is expressed at greater length by the Apostle Paul: he will sit in the temple of God, presenting himself as God. Both Paul and Ezekiel express it as a phrase rather than a single word: “I am God.” Furthermore,
the Apocalypse, chapter 13, verse 1, calls him the Beast. The Didache—an ancient book written at the end of the first century or the beginning of the second, and no later than the middle of the second century—gives a substantial description of the Last Things and of the Antichrist, and calls him the deceiver of the world, the one who will lead the world astray. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem calls him the enemy.
He also calls him the false Christ. Saint Irenaeus calls him the lawless god, and Saint Hippolytus calls him the son of the devil. Elsewhere, returning to Holy Scripture, the book of Genesis calls him the serpent. John the Evangelist speaks of “the ancient serpent,” though there he is referring to the devil. Nevertheless, in the Apocalypse,
the Beast that represents the devil and the Beast that represents the Antichrist both have seven heads and ten horns. Thus there is both distinction and identification. They are distinct, for the devil and the Antichrist are two separate persons; yet they are identified with one another in their character, in the magnitude of their evil, and so forth. For this reason, the Antichrist is also called a serpent, although the serpent primarily signifies the devil. That, my beloved, is enough concerning the names of the Antichrist. We shall now continue with what Saint Cyril writes, especially his references to the Apostle Paul.
Last time we spoke about “that which restrains.” Although we mentioned that there are many interpretations of this passage, the Fathers say that it is God’s appointed limit. John Chrysostom says, “That is, the thing which prevents.” What, then, is “that which restrains”—what is it that prevents? It is God’s appointed limit. In other words, God does not permit the Antichrist to appear until the appointed time has come, because for now God is carrying out His plan. That plan includes, for example, the Gospel being proclaimed to all humanity.
Therefore—therefore, God intervenes and restrains. Later He will no longer restrain, because...
of the wickedness of mankind. When evil has reached its culmination, God will withdraw, and then humanity will bring forth the Antichrist. Thus God restrains him now; but later, so to speak, the wickedness of mankind will prevent God from continuing to intervene. In a certain sense, He will leave humanity to reach the summit of its wickedness, which is the Antichrist. All this is entirely consistent with the whole spirit of Holy Scripture and with what we see in the history of Israel. What do I mean? Pay close attention here. I have told you that very many things—
most, though not all, of the things that are prophesied—are continually repeated throughout history. The darkening of the sun cannot be repeated in that way. Here we have what we have previously called the linear interpretation: this will happen only once. Likewise, the dreadful changes in the universe will happen only once. Other things, however, are continually repeated. So I sense that “that which restrains” is something repeated in history, as is the withdrawal of “the one who restrains.”
The Greek expression now changes to the masculine: “the one who restrains.” The previous expression was neuter, “that which restrains”; now it is masculine, “the one who restrains,” who withdraws. I have the sense that this, too, is repeated throughout our history. Let me explain. And do not forget what the Apostle Paul says immediately afterward: “The mystery”—what mystery? This whole matter—“the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.” It is already at work, even though he is speaking of the lawlessness that will bring apostasy and will appear before the final event. Before that, there will be particular manifestations of it. What, then, are these particular instances of restraint, and where do we see the restrainer withdraw and evil appear? It happens in this way: at a certain point in history, God continually intervenes on behalf of a people because they keep His commandments. Yet little by little, evil enters. Even so, God continues to bestow His grace. Evil then reaches its height—not throughout the whole earth, but among one particular people. It may be among the Greeks, or somewhere else; wherever you wish—within one region, or sometimes even within a village,
a city, or some particular place. God allows evil finally to reach its height. Yet His grace is still present there, and He intervenes. But when evil has reached its culmination, God withdraws. Then evil surges and becomes rampant, and a judgment follows. In the same way, there are particular judgments of the Son of God. The Son of God will judge humanity once, at the end; nevertheless, throughout history there are also particular judgments of the Son of God. This is shown very clearly in the Apocalypse: He continually judges history. He does not merely condemn; God intervenes. And so God withdraws.
Christ and His grace withdraw, and evil becomes exceedingly wicked. Eventually, however, people suffer the consequences of their evil, come to metanoia and repentance, and return; then Christ and His grace return as well. The same pattern is repeated later, either in the same place or somewhere else. Do we not see this in the history of Israel?
God protects His people. Little by little, however, the people turn to idolatry, and idolatry seeps in more and more deeply. God abandons His people and delivers them into the hands of their enemies, who deal them blow after blow. The people repent, God intervenes once again, and so the pattern continues.
Thus we may say that this is also happening in our own country.
Allow me to say that I am deeply afraid that this is what we are seeing in all the events now taking place, especially those concerning the Church. One or two questions were put to me, but I did not answer because I had no time. I think the best answer would be what I have been telling you all this time: God allows it; in a certain sense, He lifts His grace and withdraws, and evil surges. People become terrified. Do you see? Pay attention to what Paul says: “Only the one who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.” In other words, the One who restrains, the One who watches over the Church, steps aside. He steps aside, and then evil surges.
Yet God intervenes—pay attention—God intervenes according to His own manner and wisdom. He knows how. And in the example I have just given you, He also knows how to punish those who prevail. My beloved, I am struck by the following words in the Old Testament. God says: “Listen to Me. Do not worship idols, for I shall deliver you into the hands of your enemies.” He even names particular peoples: the Babylonians, the Ninevites, and the Assyrians. Yet when He says, “You will be delivered into their hands, and they will oppress and torment you,” He also says—listen carefully—“I Myself delivered you into their hands. I delivered you. Then, in turn, I shall punish those who tormented you.” This seems strange. Think about it carefully, and it will appear very puzzling. Yet if you consider it more deeply, you will find that it is simply what I have been saying. God intervenes and withdraws; He intervenes in history and withdraws. He restrains, then steps aside, and afterward returns once more. At the end, however, the following will happen. In the days of the Antichrist—that is, when the Antichrist is about to appear—
evil will reach its culmination. God will step aside, and evil will rise to its summit; but once again there will be an intervention. Do you know what it will be? Immediately afterward will come the Second Coming of Christ. There is the intervention. I think you can see that what I have presented as my understanding has a sound basis and support. We shall see this immediately below, when we examine how the Lord appears. “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only the one who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.” What is the mystery of lawlessness? As I told you last time—and I repeat it—the word “mystery” means, first of all, something secret. In other words, it often operates secretly. This is what we mean.
Who knows what those who turn against the Church—whether through proposed laws or by other means—have in mind? For example, in those dens, those robbers’ caves known as Masonic lodges, who knows what these people are plotting against the Church? Who knows? They themselves know. From this point of view, because they alone know, lawlessness is a mystery—that is, a secret. I repeat: “mystery” can also mean “secret.” This is the second sense of the word “mystery.” Here, then, the mystery is something that is at work,
It has, we might say, a purely theological implication: something comes about because something else is no longer standing in the way. This constitutes a mystery. And of this mystery he says, “It is already at work.” The activity of this mystery of lawlessness will continually increase, both in quality and in quantity, as we move toward the Last Things (eschata).
This mystery of lawlessness is already at work. We have expressed it in other words as the spirit of the Antichrist. Or, as Andreas Theodorou, a university professor, calls it, “Antichristianism.” He published a small book, gathering together several articles he had written for the Orthodox Press; it is already on sale, including here in Larissa. He calls it “Antichristianism”—not the Antichrist, but Antichristianism. And he clearly distinguishes the Antichrist from Antichristianism. What is the Antichrist? A person. What is Antichristianism? It is the action, the activity already present in those who bear the spirit of the Antichrist. He connects this with the Evangelist’s use of the word “antichrists.”
I mean John the Evangelist. The Antichrist is one thing, and the antichrists are another. The Antichrist, I repeat, is a person; the antichrists bear the spirit of the Antichrist—Antichristianism. I have spoken to you about this throughout the years, ever since our lectures on the Apocalypse, calling it the spirit of the Antichrist. These individual antichrists, then, are bearers of the spirit of the Antichrist. And what do we mean by “spirit”? A way of thinking and a way of acting. This is the spirit of the Antichrist. Therefore, it is already at work. Since when has it been at work? I would say, from the moment the Son of God was born.
It works in this way: the first bearer of the spirit of the Antichrist is Herod, who wants to kill Jesus Christ, even though he knows little more than that He is a descendant of David who will claim the throne. Do you know how John the Evangelist describes the persecution of Jesus as an infant? He speaks of the woman who is both the Theotokos (God-bearer) and the Church—distinct, yet identified with one another. She is pursued by the dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil, who seeks to devour her Child as soon as He is born.
That passage comes from chapter 12 of the Apocalypse. The dragon seeks to devour the Child she has borne, but the Child, it says, “was caught up to heaven.” In that brief phrase, the whole earthly life of Christ is shown, from the moment of His birth to the Ascension. Do you see? The dragon who goes to devour the Child is Herod. Yet the matter begins even earlier. When we were studying the Apocalypse, I told you that the history of the Antichrist—that is, of the spirit of the Antichrist—begins where? In Paradise. There we find the Beast, the first Beast of the Apocalypse: the devil, the serpent.
Then children are born to our first parents, Adam and Eve. Cain becomes the bearer of the spirit of the Antichrist and murders Abel. Cain does not know very much. Perhaps he knows something, because the children of Adam and Eve knew the promise God had given their parents in Paradise: that the One who would save them, the Savior, would come through righteous Abel. Abel’s place was then taken by righteous Seth, so that the coming of the Messiah would not be thwarted. What did Cain do? He murdered Abel. Who incited him? The devil. Why? To thwart
the coming of the Messiah. What role, then, does Cain play? The same role Herod later played. Do you see the panorama—the whole sweep of history? Do you see? This is the spirit of the Antichrist, and of course it has its bearers. These are not only persons, but also institutions and ideas. When we speak of ideas, we mean the third Beast, the false prophet. He appears like a sheep, like a ram with horns—not ten horns, not seven, but only two, like a ram. This suggests something calm and harmless, and it represents the various ideas found in philosophy.
Various antichristian ideas include heresies—above all, heresies—and antichristian social ideologies: Marxism and similar things. They serve the Antichrist and embody the spirit of the Antichrist. No elaborate philosophy is needed when the seal is plainly stamped upon them: atheism. What more philosophy do you need? If it meows on the rooftops, you know what it is. It is very simple; you understand. And all systems directed against the Church are manifestations of the spirit of the Antichrist. The same is true of certain forms of education.
The spirit of the Antichrist comes through the third Beast, the false prophet, who often offers all these things peacefully. It is fashion; it is music—this music that, what can I say, drives the young out of their minds. It is pansexualism. All these things, I repeat, belong to the spirit of the false prophet, the spirit of the Antichrist. Whoever cannot see this, whoever cannot understand it, understands nothing. He is blind, utterly blind. I appeal, of course, to your nous, your spiritual intellect, and I appeal to the Spirit of God to open your eyes. For whoever does not have the Spirit of God understands nothing. Merely hearing these words, such a person might stand up and say, “I object! That is not true.” He cannot see; he cannot see. Let us understand this, then. Those who hear the Word of God must be able to see, because they must have the Holy Spirit. No one can hear the Word of God and be without the Holy Spirit. For when the Holy Spirit dwells within us, He gives us other eyes, as John Chrysostom says.
“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth.” When will the lawless one be revealed? When, as the Apostle says, the restrainer is removed from the midst. The One who restrains—that is, God—will step aside. Others have offered different interpretations of the restrainer, but I do not want to confuse you. I mentioned them last time and will say no more now. Then, after the lawless one has brought into action the whole repertoire of lawlessness—above all what I described last time, following the holy Prophet Daniel, that he will alter law and times, meaning moral laws and even nature—then he will be revealed, and then the Lord will come. When will the Lord come? Three and a half years after the Antichrist’s public appearance in this world. And how will the Lord come—that is, how will the Second Coming of Christ take place? What will He do? He will abolish him—pardon me, the text says: “The Lord will slay him with the breath of His mouth.” With a single breath, the Lord will render him powerless.
What does “breath” mean here? Here it means air. “The wind blows where it wills,” says John the Evangelist. The Greek verb means “blows”—we are doing a little grammar, but never mind. So, “the wind blows where it wills.” What spirit is meant? Not the Holy Spirit, but the wind. The wind goes where it wills; it moves. We speak of a north wind or a south wind. “You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes,” and so forth.
And so, my dear ones, if people experienced such terror during the Occupation under Hitler, how much greater will their terror be at the appearance of the Antichrist, who will be unimaginably more cruel than even a brutal Hitler could be. I make this comparison simply to give us some picture of what terror and fear mean. And what does the text say next? That the Lord will render him powerless with a single breath—in other words, very easily—“and will abolish him by the manifestation of His Second Coming.” The verb “abolish” means to put someone out of action. It does not mean to annihilate him. This verb appears in the Euchologion, in the words, “O You who have trampled down death and rendered the devil powerless.”
At first, it may seem strange that the Lord “tramples down” death—these words are found in the funeral services, not in a troparion but in a prayer. What does it say? “O You who have trampled down death and rendered the devil powerless.” We might have expected the reverse: “He who abolished death and trampled down the devil.” But no. The Lord rendered the devil powerless. This does not mean that He annihilated him. “To abolish” means to remove someone from the way, to put him out of action, so that the devil no longer has any work to do. Thus, when the text says that the Lord will abolish the Antichrist, it means He will put him out of action. The Antichrist will no longer be able to act. He will be disarmed and unable to do anything at all. How will the Lord abolish him? “By the manifestation of His Second Coming.” Which coming is this? What does the Second Coming of Christ mean here? How, then, will He abolish him? Merely by appearing—by the manifestation of His Second Coming. We could say that “manifestation” and “coming,” which mean the same thing here, form a single expression: He will abolish him through the manifestation that is His Second Coming. It is one and the same event.
The text could have said, “He will abolish him by His coming,” or, “He will abolish him by His manifestation.” Instead, it uses both terms. We know that Christ is said to come at His Second Coming or at His Second Manifestation. What was His first manifestation? When He came into the world as man. Both “coming” and “manifestation” are used in the New Testament to denote the Second Coming, the Second Manifestation of Christ—Christ’s second advent. So Christ will come; He certainly will come. And when will this be? Immediately after the Antichrist. No interval of time will remain, for when the Lord slays him, He will render him powerless.
He will render him powerless by His manifestation. What, then, will happen? Will the Lord appear, depart again, and then return after a thousand years? I told you this last Monday, and I say it once more. What could that mean? Some Orthodox Christians maintain that a thousand years will intervene between the Antichrist and Christ. No. The interval is zero—zero. The text could not be clearer. If Christ comes at His manifestation, at the Second Coming—I say it once again—and destroys the Antichrist, does He then disappear? Once the Second Coming has taken place, history is over, the world is at an end, and the ship has reached harbor.
“His coming is according to the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and lying wonders.” What is this second “coming”? It is the appearance of the Antichrist, whose coming is according to the activity of Satan, with all Satan’s power and all Satan’s activity. You see, then, that the word “coming” appears twice in close succession. The first refers to the Second Coming of Christ, and the second to the appearance of the Antichrist. The Lord will abolish the Antichrist’s presence, while the Antichrist will act, we might say, by the power of Satan. Let us pause here: “according to the activity of Satan.”
“With all power and signs and lying wonders.” Therefore, it is perfectly clear that this is not an incarnation of Satan. Rather, as we said last Monday, the Antichrist will be fully human, but he will act with all the power of Satan. This is what “with all power” and “according to his activity” mean: he will act on Satan’s behalf, with Satan’s activity and Satan’s power. It does not mean that Satan will become man. And what will the Antichrist do? He will perform lying signs and wonders. “Signs” means miracles, and “wonders” also means miracles.
A “wonder” is something extraordinary: something great, astonishing, and dazzling. The Antichrist, then, will perform such miracles. The Word of God says so; the Apostle Paul says so. He will perform miracles, but they will be lying miracles. What does “lying” mean? They will only appear to be true. You know that spiritualism works miracles and magic works miracles, but they are lying miracles. We must be extremely careful, because many will be deceived by them. And this is true even in our own age. As I have told you, these things do not occur only in the last days; they have appeared continually throughout history and will intensify in the last days. You know that the devil has produced such things throughout history—astonishing events that are nothing but the devil’s tricks. Yet we often rush toward them because something has amazed us. Listen, my dear ones. I have told you this before, but it does no harm to repeat it.
We run about seeking miracles, and we will be deceived. If the Antichrist comes, we will follow him because we will see his miracles. I believe in miracles—not only those in the Gospel, but also the miracles of the Saints—and miracles continually take place. But do not forget that beside the assembly of God stands the false assembly of the devil.
Alongside the genuine gold sovereign circulating in the marketplace, there is also the worthless one—the copper counterfeit. We must never forget this, and we must not seek after miracles. The true miracle is the miracle of faith: you believed, and you were saved. Do you want a greater miracle than that? What more do you want to see? I have also explained the psychology behind this. Often we seek a miracle to reassure ourselves about the one in whom we believe. That means there is unbelief in us, because when we ask for proof, it is as though someone says, “You know, I have a check for you worth a thousand sovereigns.” We rejoice, but then we say, “Let me see it,” because we do not trust him. “Let me see it; let me see it in writing.”
That is unbelief. It means, “I want proof.” So if, deep within us, we are seeking a miracle, it is only because unbelief lies deep within us as well. Take heed. Those who seek miracles will accept the miracles of the Antichrist. Take heed. I stress this and underline it. The Church warns us. This does not mean—I say it again, do not misunderstand me—that the Saints do not work miracles, that Christ does not work miracles throughout history, or that the Church does not work miracles. It does not mean that miracles do not happen. “With every unrighteous deception among those who are perishing.”
Here, “signs and wonders” means miracles. They are false, accompanied by every unrighteous deception. Do you see how the Apostle Paul piles up these expressions to show how utterly false it all is? But who will believe in the miracles of the Antichrist? Those who are perishing. He says, “among those who are perishing”—those whose names are not written in the Book of Life. They will believe in the miracles of the Antichrist. That is why we must ask: Is my name written in the Book of Life? Is it written there? And if it is, might I fall away? Thank you.
When the seventy and the twelve returned from working miracles and joyfully said to the Lord, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name,” He told them, “Do not rejoice in this.” Do you see? Do not rejoice in miracles.
Rejoice because your names are written in the Book of Life. Indeed, He said, “in heaven.” It is the same thing; the expressions mean the same: your names are written in the Book of Life. He sent out the twelve, and that means Judas as well. Judas too worked miracles, my beloved. Would it not have been strange for the eleven to work miracles while Judas did not? Yet Judas fell away. And so I must say: My name is written in the Book of Life.
If it is written there, I must take care not to fall away, because a name that has not been written can be written, and one that has been written can be erased and blotted out. This must be our deepest concern, and we must be very watchful lest we belong among those who are perishing. Thus far, Paul.
That is the end of the sentence. This is what the Apostle Paul tells us. This is what he says. And now Saint Cyril gives his interpretation.
Saint Cyril gives the interpretation; now Saint Cyril will interpret the passage. He will dwell on one particular point: the apostasy. Last time I told you that we would leave this matter of the apostasy until now, because Saint Cyril speaks of it further on. “Now is the apostasy.” End of sentence. Now, he says, is the apostasy. What did the Apostle Paul say? Christ will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and consequently the Antichrist as well. And Saint Cyril says, “Now is the apostasy.” When is “now”? In his own time. But I shall return to another point, because, as you remember, we mentioned this before: when you see Christians devouring one another and clergy hating their brethren, then, he says, the Antichrist is near.
What does he say? “Now,” he says, “is the apostasy.” Did it exist then? Yes, it did. But he did not know whether the Antichrist would come at that time and Christ after him, because that is hidden. Since Christ’s Second Coming is linked with the Antichrist, and since the Lord told us that His Second Coming is unknown—as Holy Scripture states plainly and unmistakably—we cannot calculate it from the Antichrist. For if we say, my beloved—and there is no harm in repeating it—that the Antichrist is now seventeen, twenty-two, or twenty-five years old and will appear in five years, three years, eight years, or fifteen years, then, let us say, fifteen years plus three and a half makes eighteen and a half. That would mean Christ will come eighteen and a half years from today.
What kind of talk is this? Did the Lord not tell us that no one knows the day or the hour? We can discern only general indications from the signs He has given us; we cannot insist on exact calculations. This also refutes the claim that I know whether or not the Antichrist has already been born. I reassure you so that I may also make you concerned: I reassure you about things over which concern is misplaced, but I want you to be concerned about things that truly are right and worthy of concern. “Now, therefore, is the apostasy.” And Saint Cyril begins to enumerate its signs: “For men have fallen away from the right faith.” The first sign, then, is apostasy from the right faith—that is, the appearance of heresies. He explains: “Some proclaim Son-Fatherhood, while others dare to say that Christ was brought into being from nonbeing.” He mentions two kinds of heretics: Sabellius and Arius. What did Sabellius teach? This doctrine of “Son-Fatherhood.” He wanted to preserve the dogma that God is one, but he said that God appears in three persons. God is one, and the three persons are distinct. Yet Sabellius taught that the one God appears in one...
period of history as the Father; in another period of history as the Son, when Jesus Christ appeared; and in another period, such as our own, as the Holy Spirit. Yet, he said, these are not three persons, but one person changing roles: first called the Father, then the Son, and afterward the Holy Spirit. This is called “Son-Fatherhood.” What, then, does Saint Cyril say? Some proclaim Son-Fatherhood, a grave heresy directed against the dogma of the Holy Trinity. “Others dare to say that Christ was brought into being from nonbeing...”
“They dare to say” that Christ once did not exist. This is what Arius taught. Arius said: “There was a time when He was not.”
There was a time when He did not exist. Therefore, if He is not God from the essence of God, then He is a creature and consequently came from nonbeing...
into being, into existence—from nonexistence into existence. Who taught this? Arius. Saint Cyril, then, is referring both to Sabellius and to Arius. These heresies, my beloved, had shaken the Church profoundly. During the time of Arius and the Arian heresy, Saint Cyril was exiled repeatedly—three times, if I remember correctly...
He too was exiled, as Saint Athanasius was. Of course, he was not at the First Ecumenical Council. The First Council took place in 325, while his Catechetical Lectures are dated to around 350, twenty-five years later. These events were still recent. Yet I must tell you that these heresies remain with us to this day. They will always exist and will always lead people astray.
Suppose I were to give you paper and pencil now, hold a little examination, and say, “Write something for me about the dogma of the Holy Trinity.” Some people would write things that are heretical. Yet those people are not heretics; they write such things because they do not know the faith.
Therefore, we are not speaking about them. We are speaking about those who believe in the heresy—that is, those who do not believe in the truth or in Orthodoxy—and who often do not dare to reveal themselves. Thus, there truly are many hidden, secret heretics. “For men have fallen away from the truth and have itching ears.” People have now departed from the truth.
They want their ears to be tickled. “To have itching ears” means taking pleasure in hearing strange things—fables, we might say—things pleasant to the ear. And what fable could be more pleasing than the fable of the millenarians: that there is no Hell; that the sinners too will, of course, be raised; and that at the Judgment Christ will ask them, “Well then, what do you say? Do you repent now?” What fool, I would ask, would not repent after passing through such an experience? What fool would not repent? And if there were supposedly some fools who still would not repent...
then, they say, Christ would annihilate them. Annihilate them. There is no Hell. “Hurrah, there is no Hell,” say the millenarians. Sinners will be annihilated; they will become nothing. Could there be a more appealing fable than this? After all, how many people say, “What do I care whether I live again or not? What matters to me is living now and enjoying the pleasures of this world. Who cares about anything else?” So it is a pleasant fable. It tickles and soothes the ear. “A plausible tale, and everyone listens gladly; a call to conversion, and everyone turns away.” This is well said. “A plausible tale”—that is, speculation.
Everyone listens gladly. But at a call to metanoia and conversion, everyone turns away. Take note of this; it is characteristic. You see, newspapers sometimes publish speculative stories. A “plausible tale” means various theories. Take reincarnation, for example. Television presents something about it, newspapers write something, and you see everyone giving it their full attention. What is reincarnation? Yet when you speak to them about the resurrection of the dead, no one is moved. Do you hear? No one is moved. It is a strange thing. A plausible tale, then...
Speculations—“and everyone listens gladly. A call to conversion, and everyone turns away. Most have departed from the sound words and choose evil rather than prefer the good.” Most people, he says, have fallen away and departed from the sound words of the Gospel. They choose evil rather than good. This is happening now. My beloved, it is dreadful. This is called apostasy. Truly, do you hear? In an age when man prefers evil to good, what else can we call it?
What does he call it? “This, then, is the apostasy.” This, he says, is the apostasy. What is apostasy? It is when we turn away from God, take pleasure in fables, and grow weary of the truth. This is apostasy. “And the Enemy is to be expected.” The Enemy is now to be awaited. Who is the Enemy? The Antichrist. That is why I told you that Saint Cyril also calls him the Enemy. This is precisely why we are expecting the Antichrist. But even then, the conditions of that time already existed. Saint Cyril, in those days there were, we might say...
struggles over the faith because of the heresies. Saint Cyril, if only you had lived in our time, to see what you would have seen—and what we ourselves are seeing! How many things there are, how many, and to what an extent! See how the enemies turn against the Church and seek to bring the Church into subjection. Indeed, regarding the ecclesiastical issue that Father Efthymios was speaking to you about earlier, I would say that—even though it might seem outside our subject—it is not, my dear ones, a matter of property. No, it is not about property. That is the least of it. Ultimately, that is of no importance. The issue goes deeper: they want to take the Church captive...
to make her like the Masons’ triangle, which contains the Cross and is called the imprisoned Cross; just as sorcerers imprison the Cross through demonic powers, so that the Cross does not act there, “until he is taken out of the way.” This is what I was telling you earlier. Yes, yes, God steps aside and permits it, in order to punish these people by allowing them to remain in their delusion. So these people move beyond mere symbols. In reality, having made symbols of their own that hold the Precious Cross captive within them, they proceed to put this into effect. This, then, is the dreadful thing: to gain a foothold within the Church in order to bring about her complete dissolution. We have said it before: “The gates...
of Hades shall not prevail against her,” said the Lord. What can they destroy? Will they take the sacred treasures, the movable property, or the walls of the church building? What will they take? What might they eventually manage to seize? They cannot, however, destroy the Creator. Those things are created things. My dear ones, even the sacred treasures, when all is said and done, will become useless when the end of the world comes, if you wish to look at it that way. What remains to us is our Maker and Creator. Let them take everything. They should not—but even if they do, our Maker and Creator remains with us. There was a similar period in the time of Saint Gregory the Theologian, when the Second Ecumenical Council took place. Do you know what was said when they seized all the churches? It is that famous saying of Saint Gregory:
“You have the houses, but we have Him who dwells in them.” They took the houses—that is, the church buildings. But we have the One who dwells in them: God, Christ. They have only the buildings; they do not have Christ. We have Christ. He said this about the heretics of that time. On another occasion, Saint Athanasius the Great said, when Constantinople sought to interfere in the affairs of the Church: “Let the emperor learn not to interfere in the affairs of the Church. Let him remain in his palace, upon his throne, and govern the state. The Church is the concern of the bishops, not of the emperor, not of the secular ruler.” And you should read a recent travel account from Russia.
Holy Relics were kept in museums, and a simple woman was venerating them there inside the museum. This is what interference in the Church means; this is what apostasy means. But we shall continue, my dear ones.

Αποχωρεί ο Χριστός και η χάρη Του και το κακό γίνεται πολύ κακό. Κάποτε όμως οι άνθρωποι με το κακό σπάζουν τα μούτρα τους, μετανοούν, επανέρχονται και επανέρχεται ο Χριστός και η χάρη Του, για να επαναληφθεί πάλι πιο κάτω, στον ίδιο τόπο ή σε άλλο τόπο. Αυτό δεν το βλέπουμε και στην ιστορία του Ισραήλ;
Πιθανολογίες, «καὶ πάντες ἀκούουσιν ἡδέως», ευχαρίστως. «Λόγος ἐπιστροφῆς καὶ πάντες ἀποστρέφονται. Ἀπέστησαν οἱ πλεῖστοι τῶν ὀρθῶν λόγων καὶ μᾶλλον τὸ κακὸν αἱροῦνται ἢ τὸ ἀγαθὸν προαιροῦνται». Οι πιο πολλοί απέστησαν, λέει, έφυγαν από τους ορθούς λόγους του Ευαγγελίου και μάλλον διαλέγουν το κακό παρά προτιμούν το αγαθό. Αυτό είναι τώρα. Αγαπητοί μου, είναι φοβερόν. Αυτό λέγεται αποστασία. Αλήθεια, ακούσατε; Σε μια εποχή που προτιμάει ο άνθρωπος το κακό παρά το καλό, πώς αλλιώς μπορούμε να την πούμε;
