Summary

Following Saint Cyril of Jerusalem and Daniel, the lecture presents Antiochus IV Epiphanes and Caligula as historical foreshadowings of the final Abomination of Desolation, the Antichrist. As the Man of Lawlessness, he will embody the culmination of apostasy by opposing God’s law and attempting to alter received understandings of law, nature, and worship. Misreadings about the imminence of the Second Coming and the Apostle John’s death illustrate why eschatological passages must be interpreted carefully rather than used to justify idleness or sensationalism.

We are still in the fifteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, in the ninth paragraph. You will remember that last time we examined what the holy Prophet Daniel prophesies concerning the Abomination of Desolation. But, as we said, the final manifestation of the Abomination of Desolation—its third phase—is the Antichrist. The first foreshadowing was Antiochus Epiphanes, in 168 BC. He treated the Jews with appalling cruelty and brought a statue of Olympian Zeus into the Temple of God.

Then the Romans brought in a statue of Caesar Caligula. The third and final phase is yet to come. For Daniel's description of the Antichrist, the Abomination of Desolation, is not exhausted by these antitypes—these historical foreshadowings of the Antichrist. It is fulfilled completely in a person who has not yet come, and that person is the Antichrist. Daniel gives traits and characteristics which, even from a first reading of his prophecies, clearly are not exhausted by those antitypes.

From many other passages of Holy Scripture, however, we know that the person who will be this future Abomination of Desolation is, as I have told you, the Antichrist. Yet one particularly clear and illuminating account, despite certain obscure points within it, is the description given by the Apostle Paul in the second chapter of his Second Epistle to the Thessalonians, verses 3 through 10. What he writes is exceptionally important and, as I have said, very illuminating, although I repeat that there are also certain obscure points which we cannot easily clarify.

Those points were not unknown when he wrote his epistle to the Thessalonians, because he tells them, “Do you not remember that I told you this and that?” Today, however, we do not know what he told them. He therefore gives no fuller description, and certain points remain obscure to us. We are at section 15 of paragraph nine: “Writing about this, the Apostle Paul gave a clear sign, saying: ‘That day will not come unless the Apostasy comes first and the Man of Lawlessness is revealed, the Son of Perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above everything called God or an object of worship, so that he seats himself in the Temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I told you these things? And now you know what restrains him, so that he may be revealed in his own time. For the Mystery of Lawlessness is already at work; only the one who now restrains it will do so until he is taken out of the way. Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy with the breath of His mouth and bring to nothing by the manifestation of His Second Coming. The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and false wonders, and with every deception of unrighteousness among those who are perishing.’” These are very powerful words. I shall now give you a freer rendering.

Saint Cyril says that the Apostle Paul gave us this clear sign. What sign? The Apostasy must first come, and the Man of Lawlessness must be revealed—the man of perdition and destruction, the man who opposes all that is called divine and exalts himself above everything else. He will rise so high that he will surpass everything throughout history that has been called God or worthy of reverence, and will even sit in the Temple of God, declaring himself to be God. “Do you not remember that I told you these things while I was still among you? And now you know what restrains him”—this is an obscure point—“so that he may be revealed when the time of the Antichrist comes. For the secret of lawlessness is already at work.” I say the secret here, not the Mystery. Only when the one who restrains it—another obscure point, like the first—is taken out of the way.

Then the Antichrist will appear and the lawless one will be revealed. But when the Lord comes at His Second Coming, immediately afterward He will destroy him with a single breath from His mouth—that is, with the greatest ease, which is what “the breath of His mouth” means. By His own glorious appearing and Second Coming, He will bring all the Antichrist's activity to nothing. As for the words, “whose coming is,” this means that the coming of the Antichrist will not be an incarnation of Satan, but will take place according to the working of Satan, with every kind of power and with every kind of...

...sign and wonder, even great miracles, but miracles of falsehood—deceptive wonders—“with every deception of unrighteousness.” They will be spectacular things, but in the end they will work against those who are perishing: those among humanity who are destined to be lost, whose names were not written in the Book of Life. That, my beloved—pardon me—is a rendering of the passage. Let us now examine it. The Antichrist will not come unless the Apostasy comes first: “Unless the Apostasy comes first and the Man of Lawlessness is revealed, the Son of Perdition,” he will not come.

The Antichrist must come, and unless the Antichrist comes, Christ will not come. Historically, the issue arose in this way. Paul's epistles were being misinterpreted. He writes to the Philippians, “The Lord is near; be anxious for nothing.” These are two passages from Philippians: “The Lord is near; do not be anxious.” He did not mean that we should make no provision at all—that we should not cook or eat. But the Thessalonians had misunderstood this and other teachings of the Apostle, both from his oral teaching and from what he wrote. Today we speak of his written teaching because we know what he wrote. We do not know his oral teaching, because it has not been preserved. What had he told the Thessalonians at that time? They misunderstood his meaning. And it appears that...

...they misunderstood him even while Paul was present. That is why the Apostle Paul tells them, “Do you not remember what I told you?” Let me give you a curious example. It is well known that a report spread through the early Church that John the Evangelist would not die. People were saying, “John will not die,” because Christ had spoken hypothetically to the Apostle Peter. Peter had asked how John would end his life—they were friends. In effect, he said, “You tell me that I shall die as a martyr; but what about John?” Christ answered, “What concern is that of yours? Suppose I wanted him to remain—that is, to live and not die...

...until I return at the Second Coming—what is that to you? If I tell you that this concerns Me and John, what is it to you?” Yet the report spread in the Church that John would not die. John, who wrote his Gospel last, clarifies the matter: “He did not say that he would not die, but, ‘If I will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?’” In other words, “Suppose I wanted him to remain and not die—what is that to you?” Would you believe, my beloved, that despite this clarification, even today there are people who believe that John never died and that God has hidden him somewhere?

They believe that he will be one of the two prophets in the Apocalypse. This is wrong—a serious error. Yet there are people who believe it. I will not name who they are. Once, in one of those calendars issued by banks or other organizations and illustrated with pictures, I saw an image showing Saint John being buried alive. Afterward, according to the story, John disappeared from the tomb. These things, my beloved, are not true. Despite the clarification, a misunderstanding immediately arose. In the same way, the Thessalonians misunderstood the words of the Apostle Paul while he was still in Thessalonica. He explained them, but when he left...

...what did they do because of this misunderstanding? They stopped going to work. Instead of attending to their work, they became busybodies. They went about asking, “What is going to happen?” It is like what people say today: “The Antichrist is coming—what will happen? Is it about to happen?” So Paul writes them an epistle and says, “Do you not remember what I told you?” But we do not know what he had told them. That is why, as I said, he wrote what we now read. Nevertheless, the Apostle Paul tells us many things here—everything that the Holy Spirit illumined Saint Paul to record for us, so that we too might know. First the Apostasy will come...

...then the Antichrist, and afterward Christ will come. Since the question concerned Christ's Second Coming, Paul says, “Unless the Apostasy comes first.” In a certain sense, the Apostasy and the revelation of the Antichrist coincide. They will coincide, and rightly so, as I shall explain further on. Until “the Man of Lawlessness is revealed”—until the Antichrist comes—Christ will not come. He will come afterward. I said that they “coincide” because the Antichrist and the Apostasy are, in essence, both distinct and yet identified with one another. The Apostasy already exists, but the culmination of the Apostasy will be the Antichrist.

The Apostasy is distinct from the Antichrist and yet is also identified with him, because the Antichrist will be the final and crowning fruit of the Apostasy. Let us not forget this. Let us now consider what is said here about the Apostasy. Saint Cyril gives a fuller analysis of the Apostasy further on, when he interprets this passage from the Apostle Paul, and he has much to say about it. So we shall examine that subject a little later. For now, let us see how he speaks here about the Antichrist. He says, “And the Man of Lawlessness is revealed.” Let us take it one word at a time: “is revealed.”

I said this last time, but I shall repeat it once more. When Paul says, “is revealed,” he means that the Antichrist appears openly, although until then we had been unaware of his presence in the world. Let me give you an example. Last time I used the example of a statue covered by a flag. Now I shall give you another. A teacher has pupils in his school. He has taught one particular class—the sixth grade—ever since those pupils were in first grade. At some point they want to hold a celebration, and the teacher decides to include some songs, particularly solos. Thank you.

He tests their voices: “You sing for me; now you sing.” Then he discovers that one pupil has a crystal-clear voice—a masterpiece. He says, “My child, you are a revelation!” He already knew the pupil, but he did not know his voice. Now it is revealed that the child has such a voice. My beloved, the Antichrist, as we shall see, will be a human being. He will be born and will live among other people, and his presence will arouse no suspicion. At some point, however, he will begin the activity described to us by the word of God. Then, through that activity, people will recognize that he is the Antichrist.

So was the verb “revealed” used by chance? No, it was not. What I am saying refutes the claim—and I said this last time as well—that the Antichrist has already been born, that he is a certain age, that he has performed this or that miracle, or has seen dreams. Such claims are not true. I think this is a major issue that has troubled many people: the claim that the Antichrist is already here and living among us. Some say that he is fifteen years old, others twenty-two, and others twenty-seven, and that his activity will become visible when he is thirty.

Does that mean fifteen years remain? No, eight years? No, three years? Good heavens! No, my beloved.

Please pay close attention to this point. No. It is not true.

“The Man of Lawlessness is revealed.” Ah, so he will be a human being! Another widespread belief is that he will be an incarnation of Satan. People told me—I do not know, because I did not see it—about a film that was once shown, one of those satanic horror films meant to terrify people, which depicted Satan becoming incarnate. Satan cannot become incarnate. Whenever Satan, or any demon, appears as a human being, it is only an illusory appearance. Yes, Satan may appear as an animal—a dog or a beast.

Thunder, lightning—whatever you can imagine, the devil can make appear. An angel can do the same. But angelic nature, and therefore demonic nature as well, cannot become incarnate. Incarnation is the unique and exclusive prerogative of the One who Himself became incarnate: the Son of God, who created the world. He alone can become man. Therefore, since the Antichrist will certainly not be Satan incarnate, he will be a human being born of a mother and a father. That is what it means for him to be a man. For Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God made man, had a wondrous birth.

His birth was from a Virgin. But the devil—forgive me, yes—the devil cannot become incarnate. The Antichrist, who will operate through the power of Satan, as we shall see a little further on, will be one hundred percent human, born of a mother and a father: a complete, genuine, fully human being. Now, how does the Apostle Paul describe this man? As “the Man of Lawlessness.” That is the first description: the Man of Lawlessness. These names describe a person’s character, in keeping with the customary Hebrew manner of expression.

What is lawlessness? The Evangelist John tells us. What is sin? It is lawlessness. And what is sin? It is my transgression—or rather, my wrongful attitude toward God, an attitude that is displeasing to Him. And when does this happen? When I do not keep His law. Therefore, sin is lawlessness. When I fail to keep the law of God, I sin. It is very simple; we understand it. The Antichrist, then, is called “the Man of Lawlessness.” What does this mean? It means that he will violate the law of God to the utmost possible degree.

There are many lawless people—a great multitude. In our hymnography, when referring to the Passion of Jesus Christ, we speak of “the lawless Jews”; we call them “the lawless.” Anyone who does not keep the law of God is called lawless. Here, however, this lawlessness takes on depths never reached in any other human being. Daniel helps us understand this when he tells us that the Antichrist will seek to change laws and times. The words “he will change laws and times” mean that the laws will be altered.

You may ask: if I alter the law “You shall not commit adultery” and then say, “Commit adultery,” because I have decriminalized adultery or no longer regard it as anything serious, is that not an alteration of the law? Yes, it is. But do not forget that before the Antichrist comes, there is the spirit of Antichrist. In other words, things are already ripening, preparing the way for the culmination. Yet when Daniel says that he “will alter laws,” it means that a new understanding of law will arise, entirely different from the one God has established for humanity. And when he says...

“and times”—“a time and times,” in the singular, if I remember correctly—what does “time” mean here? It is interpreted as referring to nature: he will alter it. Daniel uses this very verb, “alter.” He will alter not only the law but nature as well. How can we understand the alteration of nature? I will tell you. It is very simple, extremely simple. When we regard homosexuality as something entirely natural, what is that? Is it not an alteration of nature? Worse still, when we take two men and marry them—not simply because they are committing a sin. Listen, my dear ones.

Homosexuality has always existed. Sodom and Gomorrah perished because of this sin. It was for this sin that they perished. Homosexuality has always existed among spiritually disordered people. But when matters reach the point where it is regarded as the most natural thing in the world, so that it no longer, let us say, scandalizes or shocks anyone, this means that we now have an alteration of nature. And the crowning point of this alteration of nature comes when I legalize this condition—not merely by passing laws that allow people to commit the sin freely, as is now happening...

Such things have been demanded by the European Economic Community: that freedom be imposed, so to speak, that homosexuals be granted freedom, and that this no longer be treated as a punishable offense. What a strange thing—very strange. And not only this, but the matter is crowned, rewarded, and publicly honored. How? You know that when the Church joins two people in Holy Matrimony, She places two crowns upon them. The two crowns do not constitute the Mystery itself, but they are an act of the Church showing that She crowns those who come to be married because they have succeeded in struggling in the arena of chastity.

They have been victorious. That is, they remained chaste until their wedding, and the Church crowns them. You may ask: are all those who are crowned today chaste? Well, then it becomes a parody. Let each person recognize that parody within himself and examine himself, if he did not preserve himself until the time of his wedding. Nevertheless, the Church crowns the couple. Now pay attention. Someone then comes and crowns two men who are being married. This is no fairy tale; the newspapers report it. And this was not merely this year or yesterday, but several years ago. In England—the particular case was in England—the mayor of the city, at the request of the two newlyweds, quite a couple...

Even provided them with an apartment in a public housing complex, like the public apartment blocks we have here. He gave them an apartment as well. Everything was going splendidly. And the worst thing was that a pastor—a pastor, can you imagine?—married them. We have even seen a photograph of a pastor marrying two dogs. Yes, in a photograph. And a pastor, a priest as they call him, though a Protestant, marries two men. Here, this clipping that you left with me earlier, taken from the press, speaks of a woman—the first woman priest—who is marrying a couple.

Of course, little by little you understand what is happening. Throughout the history of our Church, there has never been a woman priest. No such thing exists. People may raise this as a question, and this clipping now answers that question, so let me settle the matter as well. In Her tradition, our Church has never known such a thing. Christ did not grant Holy Orders to any woman, nor to any of His female disciples. We find no woman priest in the Old Testament, none in the New Testament, and none throughout the whole course of the Church’s history. This phenomenon appears for the first time twenty centuries after Christianity began—that is, twenty centuries after the birth of Christ. And this means that things are continually degenerating, until a priest comes to marry two homosexuals. This, then, is an alteration of the law.

It is an alteration of nature. To help you understand, let me put it this way. Fornication follows the natural order, but it is contrary to the law. Homosexuality is contrary to nature. So you see that here we are dealing with sins of the flesh. One follows the natural order but violates the law; the other is contrary to nature. If all these things are taking place, we have an indication that we are approaching the end. But how can anyone determine when the end will be? Certainly not tomorrow, yet nevertheless we are moving toward its fulfillment.

The history of humanity cannot be prolonged indefinitely. Remember what I once told you when we were interpreting the Apocalypse. Let me repeat it briefly. The period from Abraham to Christ was about two thousand, or twenty-one hundred, years. The prophecies that speak of Christ are not urgent about His coming; they do not hasten. From Christ until our own time, nearly two thousand years have passed. We are approaching the completion of those two thousand years. Yet the prophecies that speak of Christ’s Second Coming speak with urgency.

Therefore, the end cannot be very far away. You see, this is not an arbitrary claim. It is simply a supposition, an indication. It is not entirely groundless; it has some basis. And then there are the things one observes. For example, I once heard a broadcast...

The speaker said that our age is entirely new. He said that the age of humanism is now coming to an end and that a new age is beginning. He described it in his own way and said many things about it. It is an age with many characteristics, such as anarchy, and so on and so forth—many, many things.

As I listened, I said to myself: this is the age of the Antichrist. The age of humanism leads into the age of the Antichrist. Humanism means placing humanity at the center—do not miss the meaning of the word. It means arranging human affairs on the basis of human reason rather than the divine word. In other words, it is a repetition and culmination of ancestral sin. We shall become gods without God. Is that not what the devil told our first parents? You will become gods without God. And so I, the human being, will attain theosis through science and technology. I will advance; I will become something. I will display my philanthropy, or I will create ideal human societies.

Utopia. Utopia, my dear ones. All these things are called humanism. Human reason is placed at the center. It is a repetition of ancestral sin. And since this age will emphasize ancestral sin more strongly than any age before it, it naturally follows that when this age closes, the age of the Antichrist will open. What matters is that, as the speaker said, the philosophers of our own time have recognized that the age of humanism is ending and a new age is beginning. But philosophers, as people of this world, cannot perceive anything of what the Spirit of God is working within the world. Spiritual people, however, perceive and understand these things: it is the period of the Antichrist.

For we are told that this new age has certain characteristics. What kind of characteristics? It speaks of anarchy and of all these other things. These are nothing but elements that dissolve a society. They cannot unite and build a society; they tear it apart. Thus, my dear ones, the Antichrist will be the culmination of lawlessness. As I told you, many lawless people have existed, but he will be the culmination. That is why he is called the Man of Lawlessness. The Apostle Paul gives a second description: the Son of Perdition. Notice that first he says “the Man,” and now he says “the Son.” We might compare it with the expression “the Son of Man.” This is again a Hebrew manner of expression.

Jesus Christ also bears the title “the Son of Man,” and Christ Himself gives this title to Himself. The Jews ask Him, “Who is this Son of Man?” Since this is a Hebrew form of expression, in ordinary Greek we would simply say “man.”

Christ uses it to emphasize both His divine and His human nature. Here, however, to emphasize only the human nature of the Antichrist, the Apostle says, “the Man of Lawlessness, the Son of Perdition.” But there is something more. “Perdition” means destruction or loss. We say, “I have lost my wallet,” and at the police station there is a department for lost property. Loss—perdition. Forgive me for analyzing these things in such detail, but I want to make myself understood even by a small child, if possible. Perdition.

To lose! Perdition does not mean annihilation. We say, for example, that the water in the cistern has been lost. It has not ceased to exist; it has evaporated and gone elsewhere. So “lost” does not mean reduced to nothing. The water has gone elsewhere. Likewise, when we say that a person is lost, it does not mean that he is annihilated. The expression “perdition” means the darkness of Hell.

That is what it means in the language of Holy Scripture. It is the darkness of Hades and eternal Hell. Christ called Judas “the Son of Perdition.” “Lord, My Father,” He says in His prayer, “I have lost none except the Son of Perdition”—and he was not lost because of Me; he chose it himself. Do you see what the Lord calls Judas? The Son of Perdition. What, then, does “Son of Perdition” mean? It means two things: one who destroys and one who is destroyed. He is a son who destroys people—that is, a man who destroys people—and in the end he himself is destroyed.

The Antichrist will destroy multitudes—more than the world wars destroyed. Yet this destruction does not mean that they will be put to death. No; he will destroy them in the sense that he will send them to Hell. That is the kind of destruction meant here, not the killing of Christ’s martyrs. And in the end he himself will be destroyed. The Apocalypse tells us this plainly, as does the Apostle Paul here: Christ will destroy him with His breath—that is, effortlessly—and will destroy him at His Second Coming. The Apocalypse also tells us that he will be cast alive into the lake of fire. What does “alive” mean? It reveals something very important.

I explained this to you then, though perhaps we did not notice it carefully. It is well known that those who are alive at the Second Coming of Christ will not experience death. “We who remain,” says the Apostle Paul in his First Epistle to the Thessalonians—the two Epistles to the Thessalonians have two principal themes: the first concerns the resurrection of the dead, and the second the Antichrist—“we who remain alive,” says the Apostle Paul, “will not experience death, but will be caught up into the air”; that is, we will be taken up to meet the Lord. But what will happen? When Christ appears, the corruptibility and mortality of human bodies

will be changed into incorruption and immortality, both for the devout and for the ungodly. Since the Antichrist will be the one destroyed by the Second Coming (Parousia) of Christ, this means that he will not experience death. It also means that he will be changed. “We shall be changed,” says the Apostle Paul, from the body’s mortality to immortality, and from corruption to incorruption. Both the sinners who rise from the dead and those sinners who are still alive will receive their former bodies, but renewed.

Those who are alive will have their bodies changed into incorruption and immortality. They will be in Hell with their bodies. And therefore...

the Antichrist, since he is a man—and a man he is—will be found in Hell: Hell now, not Hades. This is why Scripture uses that small expression: “he will be cast.” It says that the Antichrist and the false prophet will be cast alive into the lake of fire.

Therefore... Therefore, please allow me to explain something here. Do not say that I am dwelling on fine details; these details must be examined. There is an interpretation, which I mentioned to you previously, that a thousand years will intervene between the Antichrist and the Second Coming (Parousia) of Christ. It is not only the millenarians who say this. No; some contemporary writers do as well. A certain modern theologian and scholar has written a book about it. You will see this if you ever read the book; I shall say no more. I will only tell you that no interval of time intervenes. The view of the Church—that is, the Church’s interpretation—is that there is no interval. The thousand-year reign is the time enclosed between Christ’s two comings, known as the age of the Gospel, as Saint Andrew of Caesarea and the other Fathers also teach. But you see that, at His Second Coming, Christ will send the Antichrist and the false prophet alive into Hell. They will be alive when human nature has already been changed. If they had to die, they would not enter alive.

Pay attention: if the Antichrist and the false prophet had to die, they would simply die. They would not go there alive. They would go as we do; we do not go alive into Hades. Our soul goes to Hades, while our body lies in the grave. Therefore, when it says here that “they will be cast alive into the lake,” it means that this change will take place. But the change will occur at the Second Coming of Christ. Therefore, no interval of time separates the end of the Antichrist from the Second Coming of Christ. I believe this is clear. This is how I interpret it for you from Holy Scripture. It is perfectly clear and agrees completely with the teaching of our Church concerning the thousand years. He is, then, the Son of Perdition. His third designation is “the Adversary,”

the one who opposes. You know that the word “Satan” is Hebrew: satan. It retains its Hebrew form. The Apostle Paul says to the Corinthians, “A messenger of Satan was given to me, to strike me, lest I exalt myself.” Do you see? A messenger of Satan. Even when the word is carried over into European languages, it remains satan. It is not Greek. They take it over unchanged, just as they do “Alleluia.” It is a Hebrew word. What does satan—that is, Satan—mean? It means “adversary.”

It means one who resists and opposes the will of Christ, the will of God. He is called the Antichrist because he opposes Christ and usurps what belongs to Christ, namely the title of Messiah. He is called the Adversary because he appropriates the titles of God and sets himself against God. That is why he is called the Adversary. If we were to express it differently—though the Apostle Paul uses the Greek word here—we would say “Satan.” Yet “the Adversary” is the better term, because otherwise someone might become confused and wonder whether he is Satan himself. No. Who, then, will he be? The man whose life...

has become identified with Satan, and whose conduct is the conduct of Satan. Can a human being identify himself one hundred percent with Satan? It is terrifying. My beloved, no human being throughout history—not the most terrible, the most filthy, the cruelest, the most fearsome persecutor of Christianity, or the most heartless person ever to have lived—has reached the point that the Antichrist will reach. Believe me, no one has ever become completely identified with Satan. No one. You understand, then, what a dreadful person this Antichrist must be.

A dreadful person: the Adversary. His fourth designation is “the one who exalts himself.” To exalt oneself means to become proud, to set oneself above others. I rise up; I lift myself above others. And this is what pride means: I appear to be above others, or I want to appear above them. But the pride of the Antichrist will be without precedent. His antitypes—Antiochus Epiphanes, the Roman emperors who deified themselves, and others—reached a certain point,

but, my beloved, Caligula placed his statue in the Temple of God. The Antichrist will not place his statue there. I said this last time too, but no matter; I repeat certain things. He himself will sit in the Temple of God. Therefore, the Antichrist will surpass every predecessor and every antitype that foreshadowed him. This is terrifying. Now pay close attention: “He opposes and exalts himself above everything that is called God or an object of worship.” He will set himself above everything that has ever been called God or an object of worship throughout history. Zeus, for example, could be called a god; there is also the true God; or a stone might be regarded as an object of worship, something venerated. He will set himself beyond and above all of them. And because he will set himself beyond and above everything, I must tell you that idolatry—the device of Satan which he introduced into humanity, for the first symptom of the Fall of our first parents, first both chronologically and in character, was idolatry—will return in the last days. The Apocalypse says so, when the angel says

to John, “The Beast that you saw”—what was it?

“It was, and is not, and will be.” Idolatry existed; with the coming of Christ it ceased to be, but it will return. I must tell you that the devil promotes idolatry, yet when the Antichrist comes, he will abolish idolatry. Since he will set himself above everything called God or an object of worship, he will abolish idolatry. And he will abolish it in the name of God. That is where people will be deceived. In the end, however, he will proclaim himself God. Idolatry, then, stands in his way. Pay attention to what I am saying: idolatry stands in his way. Could this be “what restrains,” the restraining power?

We shall examine that, because in the phrase “what restrains,” the Greek expressions “he who restrains” and “what restrains” are participles. One is masculine and the other neuter, both from the verb meaning “to restrain” or “to hold back.” Very many interpretations have been offered because this is an obscure passage. Could idolatry be what restrains him? When idolatry disappears, will the Antichrist be revealed? Let us say that this is one interpretation—one among many. Perhaps it is not the right one, though it may contain some truth. I continue: “so that he sits in the Temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.”

He will go so far as to sit in the Temple of God and proclaim himself to be God. How will he sit there? How will he sit? As I am sitting now? Will he sit upon the bishop’s throne? We cannot easily grasp what this means. The Antichrist. This is not the Temple of God meant here. The Fathers tell us it is Solomon’s Temple, which he will rebuild. You know this; you have heard it elsewhere and read about it. That is correct. But will it refer only to Solomon’s Temple? What of those who prepare the way for the Antichrist, who bear the spirit of the Antichrist and are represented by particular persons—the so-called antichrists? John the Evangelist says:

“You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and even now many antichrists have appeared.” He distinguishes the Antichrist from the antichrists. The antichrists represent the spirit of the Antichrist, while the Antichrist is the principal person himself. Might they also sit in the Temple of God—that is, in this kind of temple? I have nothing to offer except the interpretation given by Arethas. I shall mention a few points that I discussed when explaining the Apocalypse; I am simply repeating them. Those of you with good memories will recall them. Arethas, in his interpretation of the Apocalypse, asks whether the Antichrist might not also be sitting in this temple in Constantinople. What does he have in mind when he says this?

Pay attention: Arethas lived in the tenth century. The Antichrist might be said to sit in the city of Orthodoxy, in the Temple of God—for example, in the Church of Hagia Sophia. What Arethas has in mind are heretical patriarchs. These are not the Antichrist himself, but antichrists. Heretics have sat upon the throne of Orthodoxy—even until yesterday. I am not speaking of Constantinople specifically, or only of the present day. Historically, we call it the Ecumenical Patriarchate. I shall not analyze further why and in what sense it is called ecumenical. Have there not been patriarchs, even down to our own day, who are heretics?

who would wish, for example, to accept ecumenism? That was the example I had in mind. Events in our time are moving quickly. Those of you who read even a little know about these things. So perhaps, Arethas says, the Antichrist also sits in the Temple of God—not Solomon’s Temple, but the temple of Orthodoxy? Saint Cyril says that it is Solomon’s Temple. We shall examine this, though not this year. Do you know why I am sorry? We shall not finish the Fifteenth Catechetical Lecture. At the pace of our analysis, we shall not finish it. But you must have patient endurance. I want to gather you again next year, if God grants us life. Now then, pay attention here. All these things are true. And he will present himself as God. As God—God Himself. But how will he prove that he is God? The Apostle Paul will tell us at the end.

“With all power, according to the working of Satan, with all power and signs and lying wonders”—with astonishing miracles. He will even raise a dead person. As the Apocalypse tells us, one head of the seven-headed Beast was wounded and killed, and the Antichrist, it says, raised it up. Then they worshipped the image of the Beast. But these things will be illusions. My dear ones, do you understand what a terrifying person the Antichrist will be? But since our time is also coming to an end, let us consider one more point. “Do you not remember,” says the holy Apostle Paul, “that when I was still with you, I told you these things?” When I was with you, I used to tell you about them. “And now you know what restrains.” You know what is holding him back. What is it? The Thessalonians knew, but we do not know today. What is this restraining force? A little further on he tells us: “so that he may be revealed in his own time”—so that the Antichrist may be revealed when his appointed hour comes. Something is preventing him. To restrain means to hold back, to keep in check. “For the mystery,” that is, the hidden mystery, he says, “of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.”

The one who now restrains must be taken out of the way. Who is this restrainer, my dear ones? Many interpretations have been offered. I explained this to you earlier. Some said it was Roman authority—the Roman emperors, who did indeed make gods of themselves, but whose manner of governing the state ultimately prevented anyone else from taking power. That is one simple interpretation. Some have said one thing, and others another. I shall tell you only what John Chrysostom says, though at one point he too says that it is the Roman state. Yet what can I say? Listen. John Chrysostom tells us that “what restrains” means “what prevents”—in other words, what I have just explained briefly. What is it? Oecumenius says, “By ‘what restrains,’ he means the limit set by God.” Theodore of Mopsuestia says, “The Apostle calls this restraining force the limit set by God.”

What does this mean? It means that this is the limit set by God. In other words, my dear ones, God prevents the Antichrist from appearing until God’s plan has been brought to completion. This is the limit set by God. And when God’s plan has been fulfilled, then God will withdraw His restraint, and the Antichrist will act. This is the restrainer. I say again: if you find another interpretation elsewhere, it is because many interpretations exist. Yet we cannot say that these things happen without God’s knowledge or apart from Him. No. God has a plan. Let me give you a parallel example. It has just occurred to me.

The Hebrews did not enter the land of Canaan, but remained in the wilderness for forty years, and this was for many reasons. And God also says to Joshua—to Moses: “The time has not yet come for Me to destroy them, because the time has not yet come for what we might call the cup of divine judgment to be filled.”

«Ήταν, δεν είναι και θα είναι». Η ειδωλολατρία ήτο· με την παρουσία του Χριστού δεν είναι, αλλά θα επανέλθει. Πρέπει να σας πω ότι εργάζεται την ειδωλολατρία ο διάβολος, αλλά όταν θα έρθει ο Αντίχριστος θα καταργήσει την ειδωλολατρία. Διότι, αφού θα σταθεί πάνω από καθετί που λέγεται Θεός ή σέβασμα, θα καταργήσει, λοιπόν, την ειδωλολατρία. Θα την καταργήσει δε εν ονόματι του Θεού. Εκεί θα πλανηθούν οι άνθρωποι. Αλλά στο τέλος θα ανακηρύξει τον εαυτόν του Θεόν. Η ειδωλολατρία, λοιπόν, τον εμποδίζει. Προσέξτε τι λέω εδώ: τον εμποδίζει η ειδωλολατρία. Μήπως είναι το κατέχον αυτό που εμποδίζει;

«Ακούσατε ότι έρχεται ο Αντίχριστος και τώρα υπάρχουν πολλοί αντίχριστοι». Αντιδιαστέλλει τον Αντίχριστον από τους αντιχρίστους. Οι αντίχριστοι εκπροσωπούν το πνεύμα του Αντιχρίστου. Και ο Αντίχριστος είναι το κύριο πρόσωπο. Μήπως κάθονται και εις τον Ναόν του Θεού, δηλαδή σε αυτόν τον ναό; Δεν έχω τίποτα να πω παρά μόνο την ερμηνεία που δίνει ο Αρέθας. Φέρτε μερικά σημεία, τα έχω πει στην Αποκάλυψη, απλώς τα επαναλαμβάνω. Όσοι έχετε μνήμη θα τα ενθυμείστε. Λέγει ο Αρέθας, που ερμηνεύει την Αποκάλυψη, ότι μήπως και σε αυτόν τον ναό της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως δεν κάθεται ο Αντίχριστος. Τι έχει υπόψη και το λέει αυτό;
