Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets Christ’s warning about the “abomination of desolation” through Daniel’s prophecies and Matthew’s cryptic phrase, “let the reader understand.” The abomination signifies a profanation from which God’s grace has departed, especially the desecration of the Jerusalem Temple by idolatrous worship. The final fulfillment will occur when the Antichrist, a wholly human servant of Satan, suddenly reveals himself, enters the restored Temple, exalts himself above every object of worship, and claims to be God.

We are still in the fifteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, in paragraph nine. “And what happens after this?” He continues as follows: “When therefore you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place—let the reader understand.” But if anyone then says to you, “Behold, Christ is here,” or, “He is there,” do not believe it. Hatred among brethren gives room to the Antichrist. For the devil prepares divisions among the peoples, so that the one who is coming may be readily received. May it never happen that any servant of Christ here should run to meet the enemy.

What happens after this? After what? After what we discussed last time concerning the spread of the Gospel: that the Gospel will be preached throughout the whole world, and then this will happen. In other words, as it is written in the Gospel according to Matthew—the passage Saint Cyril takes from Matthew 24:15—“When therefore you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing...” What is standing? The abomination. The abomination is standing—that is, standing in the holy place.

An abomination standing in a holy place. Let the one who reads understand: “Let the reader understand.” What does this mean? Daniel does indeed mention this abomination. He mentions it in chapter 9, verse 27, and in chapter 12, verse 11, and also somewhere in chapter 11—I do not remember exactly where. Thus, in three passages the Prophet Daniel refers to this abomination, which the Lord Himself also mentions. The Lord is using a prophecy from the Old Testament and referring to it. It is also significant that the Lord

used the Prophet Daniel on at least two occasions. The first was to reveal His coming, His ascent into heaven, and His appearing before Caiaphas. The second is here, where the holy Evangelist Matthew even refers to the Prophet Daniel by name in connection with the Last Things, the eschata. This is, of course, a point that may confuse many people, and we shall try to understand it as far as possible. I would also like to tell you that the words “let the reader understand” are not found in Daniel. They are in Matthew—that is, in the Gospel.

And this is nothing other than coded language. Holy Scripture contains many passages written in code—many of them. A little later, we shall see such a passage used by the Apostle Paul. He says, “the one who restrains.” Who is the one who restrains, and why does he use that expression? What does he mean? There was always a danger that, if the Word of God spoke plainly about matters that could identify a particular situation or particular persons, those who believed in the Gospel—and those who wrote the Gospel—might be placed in danger.

You understand how serious this is. I shall give you a more recent example. Saint Cosmas of Aetolia was once speaking to Ali Pasha, who held him in very high esteem—very high esteem indeed. Ali Pasha was a bloodthirsty and ambitious man who wanted to rebel against the Porte—that is, against Constantinople and the Sultan—so that he himself might become Sultan. He had established a state of his own there in Epirus. He was ambitious, harsh, and fearsome. I do not know exactly how it happened, but Saint Cosmas of Aetolia told him that he would go to Constantinople with a red beard.

How, of course, did Ali Pasha understand this? He thought it meant that he would indeed go to Constantinople. But what could the Saint have told him—that only his head would go to Constantinople? Saint Cosmas himself would have been in danger, because he was prophesying what Ali Pasha’s future would be. If he had told him that his head would be cut off, Ali Pasha certainly would not have accepted it; he would first have cut off Saint Cosmas’s head. So the Saint spoke in coded language. He told him, “Yes, my pasha, you will go to Constantinople, since you desire it so greatly, and you will go with a red beard.” Why? Because when the head is cut off, the blood naturally stains the beard and makes it red. This is a hidden form of speech, a concealed prophecy. Take note: a concealed prophecy. There are prophecies that are hidden.

Could the Apostle Paul—or the Evangelist John in the Apocalypse—have spoken openly about Rome? How could he speak openly about Rome? The Romans had already exiled John to Patmos. How could he do so without provoking Rome against the Christians and bringing disaster upon them? So what does he call Rome? He calls it Babylon. But Babylon no longer existed, and so forth. This is what we might call the coded or symbolic language of Holy Scripture, in both the Old and New Testaments. It is used when contemporary circumstances require the Word of God to avoid bringing harm upon people. This is extremely important. I shall give you another example, though it is not actually a case of coded language.

Does any Evangelist mention the raising of Lazarus? Neither Matthew, nor Mark, nor Luke mentions it. Only John records the raising of Lazarus—such a great event! Why did the other three Evangelists not record it? For the very simple reason that Lazarus was still alive when the first three Evangelists wrote their Gospels. If Lazarus had come to be regarded as the great figure who had been raised from the dead, his life would have been endangered. Take note that his life was already in danger. The Evangelist John tells us that they wanted to kill the Lord, but also the evidence

of this mighty deed, this miracle—and that evidence was Lazarus. They wanted to kill Lazarus. Can you imagine it? But by the time John wrote his Gospel, Lazarus had already died. Lazarus was no longer alive, nor were his sisters. There was therefore no longer any danger from the Jews, and so John, whose Gospel was written last, records the event. You see, there are certain things to which we must pay close attention. Why is something written in this particular way? Here, then, it says, “Let the reader understand.” Why? Because this abomination refers to something which, if it had been written plainly in the Gospels, would have caused the Jews to launch a violent campaign. What, then, is it? That is precisely the question—precisely the question.

It is not difficult to discover, because Daniel presents it in a way we can understand very clearly. For example, in chapter 11, verses 20–27, Daniel says, “And upon the Temple, an abomination of desolations.” I shall take the words one by one. What does “abomination” mean? It means something loathsome, something abhorrent—something that fills me with disgust. What does “an abomination of desolation,” or “of desolations,” mean? In this passage Daniel uses the plural, “desolations.” Elsewhere in Daniel, in 12:11, it is singular, “desolation.” In the Gospel it is also singular, “desolation.”

What, then, does “desolation” mean? It means that something has lost the grace of God, that God is absent from that place, and so it has become an abomination. Wherever God is absent, wherever the grace of God is absent, the place is no longer filled with grace but has become ugly. And when a place is deprived of the grace of God and becomes ugly, it also becomes abominable. How, then, will this abomination of desolation be “upon the Temple,” as Daniel says? What was “the Temple”? We find this word in both the New Testament and the Old Testament.

It means the Temple. Scripture says that Jesus was “in the Temple.” This does not refer to the sanctuary, the innermost part of the Temple, as we use the word today. In Scripture, “the Temple” means the whole Temple. And there was only one Temple. Daniel therefore means that the abomination of desolation will be imposed upon the Temple. I say “imposed” because I am interpreting Daniel’s preposition “upon”: “and upon the Temple.” In other words, the abomination of desolation will be established over the Temple. What, then, is this abomination of desolation?

In chapter 12 he tells us: “And from the time when the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days.” When he says it will be set up, he means that God will permit this abomination of desolation to remain for approximately three and a half years—1,290 days, about three and a half years. The Lord says in Matthew 24:15: “When therefore you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place.” It is to be standing there. Matthew’s word “standing” corresponds to Daniel’s “upon”: it is to stand in the holy place, in the Temple. Notice how He says “the holy place.” He does not say “the Temple,” because this is coded language. The events would be extremely terrible—truly terrible. This had to be hidden from the eyes of the ungodly, because otherwise the faithful would be placed in danger. That is why He continues, “Let the reader understand.” Let the one who reads understand. “Then let those who are in Judea flee.”

Those who are within the province of Judea, and especially those within the city of Jerusalem, must take to the road and flee, because the city will be destroyed. But tell me this, so that you may understand it by analogy. Suppose someone printed in a newspaper, in enormous headlines one morning, that at six o’clock that evening there would be an earthquake measuring eight on the Richter scale.

What do you think would happen? Everyone would be terrified. They would head for the mountains and flee from the city. But what would the city authorities do when they saw the entire population leaving? The person who published this report would be accused of disturbing the peace of the city. You can therefore understand how dangerous it would have been to write openly that the Temple would be destroyed. Such a prophecy would have struck the Jews like a bomb, because the Temple was the center of all their worship and of their entire existence. It therefore had to be expressed

in coded language: “When you see the abomination of desolation standing in that holy place”—but let the reader understand. What, then, is this abomination? Here we must apply the corresponding principle. As I have told you before, when we interpret Holy Scripture or a prophecy, we always consider the principle of repeated fulfillment. Christological prophecies, of course, are repeated in relation to the Second Coming of Christ, though the manner of their fulfillment is different. Nevertheless, as you may remember from our earlier discussions, the Second Coming of Christ was mentioned together with His first coming. But with other subjects...

A prophecy is not exhausted by one fulfillment. A prophecy from the Old Testament is not exhausted. Most of them have not yet been exhausted. This is why we must read the Old Testament and study the prophets, because a prophecy may be fulfilled again—a second, third, or fourth time. Sometimes it may have many fulfillments, or be fulfilled continually. Here you will see how many successive fulfillments of the prophecy there are, with each fulfillment serving as the antitype—that is, the anticipatory pattern—of the one that follows. Pay attention: the antitype of the next fulfillment. What I am telling you provides us with little keys.

With them, we unlock the Word of God and come to understand it. Thus, when Daniel’s prophecy was fulfilled approximately 430 years later, that was its first fulfillment, and at the same time it served as the antitype, the anticipatory pattern, of a second fulfillment. The second fulfillment is then the antitype of a third. In this particular case, Daniel’s prophecy has received two fulfillments, and a third is still awaited. So then, what was the first fulfillment? That is the fulfillment to which Daniel directly refers.

I should tell you that Daniel is also referring to two things at once. In its full meaning, his prophecy encompasses all three fulfillments. The first fulfillment occurred around 168 BC, under Antiochus IV Epiphanes, one of the successors of Alexander the Great. Daniel portrays him as a type of the Antichrist. Take note that Daniel does indeed describe Antiochus, but the prophecy also goes beyond him. We thus see Daniel’s prophecy reaching forward to the Last Things, the eschata, when it will be fulfilled once more, for the final time.

The first fulfillment of the prophecy in the Last Things, then, took place in 168 BC through Antiochus Epiphanes, who went so far as to introduce the worship of Olympian Zeus inside the Temple. Later, in the second fulfillment, in AD 70, the Temple had already been profaned by the Romans before it was destroyed.

Inside were Roman standards bearing idolatrous symbols, and once again a statue of Caesar had been erected. So the first abomination came under Antiochus Epiphanes, and the second abomination came through the Romans. How do we know this? The First Book of Maccabees, chapter 1, verse 57, tells us how the first abomination was fulfilled.

The Book of Maccabees tells us that the Maccabees were active precisely in the time of Antiochus Epiphanes. It was then that the wonderful family of seven children, themselves also called Maccabees, were martyred together with their mother, Solomone, and their teacher, Eleazar.

There Antiochus is a type of the Antichrist, while the seven children, together with their mother and their teacher, are a type of the martyrs of the Last Things. They prefigure the martyrs of the Last Things, who will face the prototype, the Antichrist himself, in the true and ultimate last days, at the very end of the Last Things. Thus, in the passages I cited, the Books of Maccabees relate the fulfillment of the prophecy. This is its first fulfillment. Yet this first fulfillment would become a type of the second fulfillment, of which the Lord Himself speaks, since the Lord came before that second fulfillment: the destruction of Jerusalem and of the Temple, after it had first been profaned by the Romans.

It was the abomination of desolation. What does “the abomination of desolation” mean? It means that the grace of God was no longer present within the Temple, because that place was already being used to offer sacrifices to demons or to deified men, such as Caesar. The Lord also tells us that the Christians had to flee from Judea. This was a cryptic message, a coded warning that the Christians had to leave. Only the Christians would flee, because they alone believed in Christ and therefore were not to be punished. The city that had rebelled so terribly against God—that city...

...was to be punished, but not the Christians. Yet how many Christians would actually flee? Only those who believed the words of Christ. The others, who did not believe, would not flee but would remain inside. That is why, when the Romans surrounded the city, a striking phenomenon was observed: the Jews were going into the city to seek protection...

...seeking safety behind its walls, while the Christians were fleeing from the city. Their flight was to be so swift that the Lord gave that remarkable command: if someone was on the housetop—and, as you know, houses in the East have flat roofs rather than tiles—perhaps tending to some task, spreading out figs or sesame to dry, as people still do on our islands here in the Aegean, and he saw the armies approaching, he was not to go down and collect anything from his house. He was not to say, “My wallet! A change of clothes!” He was not to enter the house at all, but to descend by the outside stairway from the roof and flee beyond the city, because the gates would soon close and he would not have time to escape. Likewise, if someone had gone out early to work in his field, to dig or plow, and then saw the armies, he was not to enter the city to retrieve anything from his house, but was to flee still farther away. The Lord spoke those famous words which I mentioned to you on a previous occasion: “Remember Lot’s wife.” Remember the wife of Lot. What a memorable phrase and image—a short phrase, yet a striking image. What happened to Lot’s wife? She turned back to look and became a pillar of stone.

Do not turn back, or you will not be saved. This was a sign pointing to salvation—I emphasize, a sign pointing to salvation—this image expressed in the words, “Remember Lot’s wife.” This, then, concerned the second fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy: the destruction of Jerusalem. Who gives us the measure by which to understand this second fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy? Christ Himself, who said, “that which was spoken by Daniel the prophet,” and that the abomination would be “standing in the holy place.” These are the words of Christ. And this was indeed fulfilled in AD 70. Let me make a brief digression.

At that time, the Christians had a sign of the approaching destruction. What had entered the Temple—the Roman emblems and the rest, the statue of the emperor, and the emperor himself—was, we might say, a type of the Antichrist. It was an antitype, a preliminary fulfillment pointing ahead to the final Antichrist, who has not yet come. So the Christians fled. Will there also be some sign in the Last Things? Which Last Things? Those of the true Antichrist whom we await, so that Christians may be warned and flee? Yes. What might that sign be? It is not easy to say.

Indeed, it is very difficult. First of all, we remain within the Church, where this understanding may be given. We do not know what people at that time will come to understand from Holy Scripture, so that they will say, “This is the sign that we must take refuge in order to escape.” The Word of God tells us in the Apocalypse that we will flee into the wilderness. What does the Lord say here? “Let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.” He is speaking about Jerusalem, which is a type of the Last Things. In our case, the Book of Revelation says that we will flee into the wilderness. What must we do? We must remember His words: “Remember Lot’s wife.” In other words, do not say, “I have fields, money, property, investments, this and that, all my possessions—how can I leave?” Leave them behind, because otherwise you will lose...

...not only your life, but above all your soul. For if you become entangled in the machinery of the Antichrist’s system of government in an attempt to preserve your possessions, you will worship him. That is, you will be lost. I think, I believe, perhaps—I cannot say this with greater certainty—that this is the sign. That is why I told you that it is both difficult and not difficult to recognize the same signal in the first case and in the second: do not turn back; flee, flee. But how will I live in the wilderness? The Word of God tells us that for three and a half years God will nourish the woman—the Church, the woman...

...in the wilderness, just as He nourished His people with manna. What an unexpected thing! Who could have believed it? How could the Hebrews ever have imagined that God would send down manna—something beyond comprehension—from heaven for them to eat? Yet we have this historical precedent. Since, then, we must go into the wilderness and reach the wilderness, we must no longer look back at anything in the world or ask, “What will become of us there?” For He has promised it: first, through the historical precedent of the manna in the wilderness, which reveals the wisdom and power of God; and second, through His promise that God will nourish the woman, the Church, in the wilderness. You need only flee. Do not become caught in the machinery of the Antichrist.

So, you understand, some people ask how we will safeguard our money. You know, over the past two, three, four, or five years, ever since we covered these matters in our interpretation of the Apocalypse, some people have approached me and asked, “Should we withdraw our money from the bank?” No, my dear ones. We must think of nothing except fleeing. “Remember Lot’s wife.” I tell you truthfully, this warning of the Lord has made a profound impression on me, especially because it is so concise. How often I repeat it: “Remember Lot’s wife.” Let us remember the wife of Lot, with all the positive and negative consequences that this entails.

For... Lot and his two daughters fled and were saved. His wife was burned. As I told you, there were both positive and negative consequences. Yet the Lord Himself interprets Daniel, while the New Testament now also prophesies the third phase through both the Lord and the Apostle Paul. For it is well known that the destruction of Jerusalem is a type of the Last Things, a type of the end of history, and so forth. What is this third and final phase? It will come when the abomination once again occurs in the Temple.

In the Temple, in that same place—“standing in the holy place,” as the Lord said. What will this be? When Solomon’s Temple is rebuilt, it will not be a statue of Olympian Zeus or a statue of Caesar that enters it, but the Antichrist himself. Would you like to see this? Listen. It is from the Second Epistle to the Thessalonians, chapter 2, verses 3–4: “And the man of sin shall be revealed.” Notice these descriptions: “the son of perdition.” He is a man—a human being. He is not a phantom.

Is he an incarnation of Satan? There is no such incarnation; Satan cannot become incarnate. The Antichrist is one hundred percent human: “the man of sin, the son of perdition, the one who opposes”—the one who sets himself against God. So that is the first, second, and third description. The fourth is this: “and exalts himself.” He will exalt himself. This will not be an ordinary case of pride, the deadly sin, but pride beyond all measure—a degree of pride that no human being has ever conceived. You will see what this means.

This will happen without any preceding public history to identify him. Scripture says, “And the man of sin shall be revealed.” To reveal something means that it was hidden and is then uncovered. When we unveil a statue, for example, we first cover it, perhaps with a flag if the benefactor being honored is a national figure, or in any case with some kind of cloth. We appoint a day for the celebration, pull away the covering, and the statue appears before the people’s eyes. So when Scripture says that he “shall be revealed,” it means that he will not have been known beforehand. It means that people will suddenly see him.

This does not mean, of course, that he will have come into existence on earth at that very moment, but that he will not previously have made a public appearance. What, then, of those who say that the Antichrist has already been born and is active in this way or that? But he is yet to be revealed. The verb “to reveal” means that the unveiling will concern the beginning of his activity. How, then, could we know whether he has been born, much less how old he is? So here we have the point once again. Pay close attention to it, and reject such claims completely. No one knows anything about this matter. The revelation of the Antichrist will mean exactly what the word “reveal” means: he will appear suddenly. Now pay attention to what follows. He will possess a dreadful pride...

...a Luciferian pride, “exalting himself above everything that is called God or an object of worship.” He will consider himself to be above—this is what “exalting himself” means—absolutely everything that throughout history has been called God or has been held sacred by human beings. An object of worship is something venerated or bowed down before. We may say, for example, “This is a temple,” or, “This is an icon,” and we treat it with reverence. Or consider how many gods there have been in this world: from Zeus and the twelve gods of Olympus in Greek mythology, to other persons who were deified.

Take Buddha or Confucius. They did not deify themselves; their followers deified them. They did not make themselves gods. I emphasize this: neither Confucius nor Buddha deified himself. But in any case, whatever exists in this world that humanity regards with reverence, the Antichrist will claim to surpass. From the true God to false gods, he will say: “I am greater than Buddha, greater than Confucius, greater than Muhammad, greater than Jesus Christ, and greater than the God who made heaven and earth. I am above them all.” Tell me, what deified...

deified person has ever spoken like this? What deified person? Indeed, the Prophet Isaiah speaks of this: “I will set up my throne before the Lord.” This refers to the devil and, by extension, to the Antichrist. For the devil has seven heads; he is the Beast with seven heads and ten horns. The Antichrist likewise has seven heads and ten horns, signifying that what the devil is, the Antichrist will also be—with regard, of course, to wickedness, pride, and powers. In other words, tale quale, as the Italians say: the very same quality, the very same quality. This is precisely why these two beasts—the one rising from the sea and the other appearing in heaven—

The Beast appearing in heaven is the devil. The Beast appearing and rising from the sea is the Antichrist. They have the same characteristics, exactly the same. Yet they are, of course, two distinct beings: the devil and the Antichrist. One is a spirit; the other is a man. So the Antichrist, as everyone says, will build Solomon’s Temple. Then he will enter Solomon’s Temple and proclaim himself to be God. The emperors proclaimed themselves gods, if you like, for political reasons, so that the peoples under their rule might be united. But what emperor ever said, “I am the creator of heaven and earth”? No one ever said that. Here, then, it says that the Antichrist will “exalt himself above everything that is called God”

or an object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the Temple of God as God. Saint Cyril asks which Temple of God this is. Is it the Church of the Resurrection? You know that he delivered his catechetical lectures in the Church of the Resurrection, the church that still exists today.

“Showing himself that he is God”—he will present himself as being God. How will he prove it? Through false miracles, through false miracles. Therefore, once he has taken his seat in the Temple of God, this will be the culmination of the abomination of desolation. For will the grace of God dwell in a temple built by the Antichrist? Certainly not. And since the Antichrist will dwell in this Temple of God and proclaim himself to be God, this will be the worst abomination that could ever occur.

Thus, Daniel’s prophecy has three phases. Two have already taken place; the third is still awaited. The first was in 168 BC, under Antiochus Epiphanes. The second phase was the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, after the statue of Caesar had first been erected there. Before that came the statue of Olympian Zeus, set up by Antiochus Epiphanes. And now we await the third phase, when it will no longer be a statue, but the Antichrist himself. Of course, you may ask about a sign. What does Saint Cyril say here? After Christianity has spread throughout the whole world, what other sign might we have? This one as well: if you should live to see Solomon’s Temple being built, ask yourselves who is building it.

For take note: Solomon’s Temple cannot properly function, because everything required for it to function according to the Law is missing. There is no priesthood among the Jews. It was lost; it disappeared with the destruction of Jerusalem. The tribe of Levi no longer exists today, and therefore neither does the priesthood. So who will offer sacrifice? No one. Thus anyone could point out to the Jews that, if they offer sacrifices, those sacrifices are invalid according to the Law. They are invalid because the priesthood is absent. I will say it again, though there is really no need, because the New Testament has come and the priesthood has been transferred. But how can the Jews understand this? We have the New Testament, and since there has been a change of covenant,

there must also be a change of priesthood. This is why it says, “You are a priest according to the order”—not of Aaron, but of Melchizedek. And Jesus Christ is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek. A change of covenant, therefore, and a change of priesthood. They have no priesthood. It would therefore be futile to build the Temple. If it is built, that means something is seriously wrong. What do you think? Was it because the Jews were under occupation for so many years that they could not build their Temple? What do you think? And now that they have been an independent state since 1948, why have they made no attempt to build the Temple? Is it really so difficult? Do not tell me that the Mosque of Omar stands there. “Oh, we will blow it up,” they themselves once said when they were asked about it. We read that in the news.

They have nothing to fear. Whom should they fear? Should they fear for it as a work of art, or should they fear the Arabs? They have already fought wars with the Arabs. The time for this has not yet come. That is the point. Pay attention: it is being restrained by the one who restrains. We shall examine this a little later. But I can already see that tonight will not be enough for us to cover it. It is being restrained by the one who restrains. When the one who restrains is moved out of the way, Scripture says, then this will happen. It is not that they are unable to do it. The time has simply not yet come. And that is what is astonishing.

Nevertheless, my dear ones, we have understood what this abomination of desolation is. When, for example, we see upon the seat of authority a man who is President of the Republic—you know, once...

Some of you may remember this. Forgive me for the example, but it is striking. Many, many years ago—thirty or perhaps twenty-five years ago, I do not remember—elections were to be held, and various people put themselves forward as candidates. In Athens, a homosexual man also stood as a candidate. His name was Manolis, and people called him Manolia. So he went out and campaigned. Well, you can imagine the jeering, the laughter, the newspapers, and all the commotion. Could you imagine such a man becoming prime minister? If he had become prime minister, what would we have said then? Alas!

A man regarded that way has taken the Prime Minister’s seat. People would have reacted with shock and revulsion. That is the abomination of desolation. I have given you this image; it occurred to me to mention it so that we might understand even more clearly. What does “abomination” mean? It means a man sitting in the Temple of God and proclaiming himself to be God. An abomination.

But let us continue. “And again, if anyone then says to you, ‘Behold, here is Christ,’ or, ‘There He is,’ do not believe it.” If they tell you, “Christ is here,” or, “Christ is there,” do not believe them, says the Lord. Of course, there will not be many Antichrists. The Antichrist in the fullest sense will be the one whose coming is awaited. Hatred among brethren, then, makes room for the Antichrist. Hatred among brethren gives the Antichrist a place.

Hatred among brethren—among bishops, priests, the clergy in general, and, more broadly still, among the people—gives him a place. What does this mean? It means that among a people where brethren hate one another, it is never possible... In a Church where brethren hate one another, we are making room for the Antichrist to establish himself. “For the devil prepares divisions among the peoples, so that the one who is coming may be readily received.” The devil prepares divisions among the peoples, and divisions mean hatred among brethren. When do divisions arise among peoples? When brethren hate one another.

This is so that the one who is coming may be readily received. Who is coming? The Antichrist. You will have heard the following; here it is written: the Antichrist will find the nations in a state of conflict, divided and torn apart, with divisions among the peoples, as Saint Cyril says here, and he will propose that the nations be united. This is the first great bait. Of course, people have already begun, little by little, to speak of this. But this is not yet the thing itself; it is merely its prelude. For when you see the peoples tearing one another apart, he will say, “I will unite you.” The peoples themselves will be unable to find a way forward

or to become reconciled with one another. And what kind of authority will he possess? How will he be able to make such a proposal? Political authority, of course. He will propose the union of the nations. Let me give you a phenomenon that foreshadows this. It is the formation of smaller unions of peoples, which is already taking place. We have the United States; today we have a united Europe, what we call the EEC. In other words, we have smaller alliances. We speak of United Arab States and of united republics, the Soviets. All these are partial unions. And so, one day, we may find...

that there are three or four such unions. Perhaps these three or four unions—perhaps three, perhaps three—will wage that terrible war against one another. Why did I say perhaps three? Because of what we once interpreted in the Apocalypse, concerning that dreadful region of Mesopotamia.

That terrifying war will take place there, involving an army of two hundred million. But is an army of two hundred million possible? Oh, very much so. As I told you, Persia in a certain sense borders China. China alone can field an army of two hundred million. Is not one person in five eligible for military service? Its population is one billion.

But enough about that. So then.

China, as I told you, has two hundred million available. Here, however, it says that those who fight one another will be of three colors: red, yellow, and blue. Namely: red, yellow, and blue. A terrifying conflict will take place. Then the Antichrist will come, because the Antichrist is the final act of history. The war will come first, and afterward he will say, “Why are you fighting? What did you gain from this war? What did you gain?” As we always ask, what do we gain from a war? As we say today when speaking of peace, “What will we gain if we go to war?”

So why should there be separate alliances? Come, let us unite. These alliances, these federations of states, have already begun to form, as we have said. Then the Antichrist will propose this union of the nations, and that explains how he will come to rule the whole world. That is the explanation, my dear ones. Saint Cyril then says, “God forbid that any of those here, or any of Christ’s servants elsewhere, should run to the enemy.” God forbid—may it never happen—that any of those here, those listening to me, these catechumens, you who hear me, should do so, says Saint Cyril: “None of those here.”

“Nor any of Christ’s servants elsewhere”—that is, no servants of Christ from any other place, wherever they may belong to the Church—“should run over to the enemy.” I would like to comment briefly on this phrase, “run over.” How might someone run over to him? In every situation, in every event, whenever an enemy invades, there are always people who run over to his side. That is a fact. When the Germans entered, there were those who were pro-German. I am using an old example. I do not know whether there are still the pro-Germans and pro-British of those days, or, even more so, the pro-British and pro-Russian factions of the previous century. But this is something we ourselves experienced.

At least I experienced it myself. I was working in a shop whose owner was a pharmacist; he has since passed away. How startled I was when I saw the first Germans enter the pharmacy and heard him speaking German to them! Just one phrase: “Good morning.” I knew “good morning” in English, but he was swelling with pride over saying it in German. “Mr. Michael, do you mean you speak English?” Poor fool that I was, I did not know it was German for “good morning.” And there he was, exchanging pleasantries with them and so on. He even gave a dinner at his home for a German commandant who lived across the street. The wretched man was pro-German. What do you think? Are there not always people...

...who run over to the enemy? Everywhere and always, in every situation and under every circumstance—you understand what I mean. So it seems that there will also be people who run over to the Antichrist. Saint Cyril warns us of this. Now listen. The Word of God reveals it. As I have told you before, one thing has made an overwhelming impression on me in the whole Book of Revelation. Neither the Antichrist nor anything else astonishes me. Two things astonish me: the return of idolatry, and the fact that Christians will worship the Antichrist. Listen to how terrifying this is. Once again, in chapter eleven of the Apocalypse...

In verses one and two, John the Evangelist writes: “And I was given a reed like a rod”—given to him by the angel. “I was given,” he says, “a reed like a rod,” to be used as a measuring rod. “And the angel said, ‘Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship in it.’” Measure the temple of God and the altar. Take note: when John the Evangelist wrote the Apocalypse, neither the Temple nor, of course, the altar still existed. The Temple had been destroyed in AD 70. This, then, is an image, a figure. The fact that the Temple no longer existed is extremely significant, because it is a type—a foreshadowing—of the Church.

Measure, then, the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. “But cast out the court outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the nations; and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.” Do not measure the courts of the Temple. The altar, of course, stood outside the Temple proper. You are to measure as far as the altar, but no farther. For the temple of God was given—excuse me, the courts, together with the holy city, that is, Jerusalem, were given over. In other words, God permitted them to be trampled by the nations, by the Antichrist, for forty-two months—three and a half years. All the Fathers of our Church interpret both the Temple and the city here as the Church. In this passage, “to measure” means “to be known by God.”

Whatever is not measured is “not known by God.” Does this mean that God is unaware of what is not measured? What will not be measured? Everything beyond the altar will not be measured; it will be trampled by the nations. This means that a very large portion of Christians will worship the Antichrist. This, my beloved, is what astonishes me and makes me mourn inwardly. Yes, only those who were measured will refuse to worship the Antichrist. They are the ones who will have fled into the wilderness. They will not worship him. They are the remnant of which the Apostle Paul speaks in the Epistle to the Romans. The Apostle Paul refers there to the Prophet Elijah and to the Last Things (eschata). What do the Prophet Elijah and Ahab represent? Ahab is a type—a foreshadowing—of the Antichrist.

The astonishing thing is that the Prophet Elijah himself, the very same person who appeared then, will also appear in the Last Things (eschata). And so we can see clearly, my beloved, that, most tragically, even Christians will run to worship the Antichrist. For this reason, we must prepare ourselves through ascesis, through simplicity of life, through great faith, and through abundant love, so that we do not come to that point. Those who seek material investments, influential connections, and worldly ambitions will come to harm. Let us take heed, then; let us take great heed, because this is no small matter. The consequences are eternal. That is all for this evening, my beloved.

Θα πει ο Ναός. Ο Ιησούς, λέει, εις το ιερόν. Δεν είναι το ιερό, το εσώτερο θα λέγαμε του Ναού, όπως λέμε σήμερα. Το ιερόν, ιερόν λέγεται ο Ναός. Ο δε Ναός ήταν ένας και μοναδικός. Δηλαδή θέλει να πει ο Δανιήλ το εξής: ότι στο ιερό, δηλαδή στο Ναό, θα επιβληθεί — είπα το «επιβληθεί», διερμηνεύω την πρόθεση «ἐπί» του Δανιήλ, «καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ ἱερόν» — δηλαδή επάνω στο Ιερό θα υπάρξει το βδέλυγμα της ερημώσεως. Τι είναι τώρα αυτό το βδέλυγμα της ερημώσεως;

Το ξέρω εγώ αγγλικά, «good morning».
