Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets Christ’s warning that many will stumble, betray one another, and fall into hatred as an escalating end-times crisis of faith. Modern Christian societies risk rejecting Christ because He did not abolish poverty or war, although these evils persist because people refuse to live according to His Gospel. Because neither the day nor the hour is known, Christians must not predict dates but should recognize the signs, persevere patiently, and guard themselves against stumbling in faith.

We are in Saint Cyril’s fifteenth catechetical lecture, at paragraph seven.
“We seek a sign of the Second Coming that concerns us; as members of the Church, we seek a sign concerning the Church.” And the Savior says: “Then many will stumble, and they will betray one another and hate one another.”
We had already made a brief analysis of this, but our time ran out before we could finish. So allow me to comment further on these words spoken by the Lord: “Many will stumble.” What will cause them to stumble?
These many will obviously stumble over the person of Jesus Christ.
As I told you—and I will now complete the thought—this stumbling will be humanity’s last and great temptation concerning the divine and human nature of Jesus Christ. People will say, “Who was this Jesus? Did He perhaps deceive us? Was He perhaps not the Messiah?” And especially when they see the Antichrist performing wonders—false wonders, of course—and when they see the Antichrist exercising worldwide dominion, they will say that he is the Messiah and, consequently, that the former
Messiah—that is, Jesus—was not Christ. For “Christ” means “Messiah,” the Anointed One appointed by God to save humanity. This stumbling will be terrible. Yet I must tell you that it had already begun while the Lord was still living among us. I emphasize that the fulfillment of everything written in Holy Scripture, in the New Testament, concerning prophecies of the Last Things—and especially the prophecies of the Apocalypse—began from the very time those words started to be written.
The way to understand all these things is that they grow more intense as the Last Things approach. Thus, stumbling over the person of Jesus Christ will not be a phenomenon unique to the end times. Why, for example, did the Jews not believe in Jesus Christ? When did they refuse to believe? While Jesus Christ Himself was already among them. And their denial of Him has remained their stumbling block to this day.
For the person of Jesus Christ is, in essence, a stumbling block for them. Does not the Apostle Paul write in his First Epistle to the Corinthians that the Cross of Christ is foolishness to the Gentiles and a stumbling block to the Jews? What does this “stumbling block” mean? It means that...
they could not accept as the Messiah someone who died upon a cross. To the Gentiles, the idolaters, it seemed foolish that a God could die as a condemned criminal, and that a condemned man could save humanity. Why? Because neither group could grasp the meaning of atonement—salvation through sacrifice. That is why the Apostle Paul says it was one thing to the former and another to the latter. But for us, the Cross of Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. Wisdom—why is it wisdom? Because through this wise means God—God...
brings about salvation. Why is this means wise? Because God abolishes the wisdom of the wise—that is, the wisdom of human reasoning—in order to introduce the wisdom of the divine Word (Logos). And why is it power? Because the Cross is the power of salvation, since it comes from the true God. The Precious Cross puts the demons to flight, and so on. Thus, it is one thing to them and another to us. You see, then, what he said: it is a stumbling block. The Cross is a stumbling block. Of course, when the Apostle Paul speaks of the Cross, he means Jesus Christ—or Jesus Christ precisely in the manner of His death.
Therefore, the Jews have had this stumbling block from that time until today. So when the Lord says that “many will stumble,” this was already happening, it is happening in our own days, and it will always happen until the end of the world. There will be one difference: as the Last Things approach, this stumbling will reach its highest degree, and it will arise among Christian peoples. This is extremely important, because the result of this stumbling among Christians is what the Lord says next, and what Saint Cyril repeats: “They will betray one another and hate one another.”
What does it mean that “one will betray another, and one will hate another”? The person who ultimately accepts the Precious Cross and does not stumble will be handed over to synagogues, councils, and courts—that is, to torture—by those who have stumbled. And not only that: they will also hate him. Because you accept what the other person regards as a stumbling block, he hates you. The Christian does not hate the non-Christian. He must not hate him. But the non-Christian—or the person who has stumbled—hates the one who has not stumbled. Do you know what the word “stumbling block” means? It is a stake.
In Greek, a stake is called a stumbling block. Suppose I drive a stake into the ground and then walk along. As I am walking, I trip over the stake and fall. Why did I trip? Because I did not see it. It is small enough to remain outside my field of vision, so I fail to notice it and am brought down by it. Thus, to stumble means to fall—to fall over that stake. And what is the stake? It is the person of Jesus Christ. Yes. What did the Lord say? “Many will stumble” over His person; they will be overthrown and fall. Why? Where now is this stumbling block, this stake that causes them to stumble? It lies in what He was offering.
Did Christ—did Jesus, as the Messiah—give what humanity was expecting? This stumbling block first arose among the Jews because they were expecting an entirely worldly Messiah. He would free them from the Roman yoke and make them exceedingly rich and perfectly happy here on earth, eating with golden spoons. The Gentile world, of course—the idolaters—accepted Christ. And we Greeks were idolaters too; our ancestors were idolaters, let us not forget it. But the time will come when we too will begin to ask, “Why? Is Jesus perhaps not the Messiah, not Christ?”
Did He give us what we expected? This last point is especially characteristic of our own age. Pay attention to it, because in earlier centuries the question was not posed in this way—that is, in its social dimension. The only question raised was whether Jesus is the Messiah, God who became man. What is Arianism? Is it not a stumbling block? How many people stumbled over the stumbling block of Arianism, and so on? But in our age, the situation has become like that of the Jews in ancient times.
And it continues to be so. Christian peoples will therefore say what the Jews said: “What did Christ bring us?” They will ask what Christ brought us on the social level. At first, then, there was denial of Christ’s divine and human nature. Arianism denied His divine nature, while Monophysitism denied His human nature. And do not forget that yesterday we commemorated the Seventh Ecumenical Council. We keep the memory of this Council; we remember it. Why? Because it is what we call the Sunday of Orthodoxy.
By bringing the icons forward and restoring them, we confess that Christ can be depicted. Why? Because He is perfect man. If I reject His icon, as the Iconoclasts do, then I reject the true Incarnation and accept only an apparent incarnation—a form of Docetism.
This is a form of Monophysitism. Throughout the history of the Church, Monophysitism entered under many different names. What does Monophysitism mean? It means accepting only one nature in Christ—specifically, only His divine nature—while denying His human nature. Consider Saint Ignatius: when was he martyred? Around AD 105 to 107.
He speaks about these people, the Docetists, describing them in the harshest terms because they denied the human nature of Jesus Christ. They claimed that He suffered on the Cross only in appearance, and so forth. Now the issue will no longer be merely the denial of either His divine or His human nature. That denial will certainly remain—pay attention, it will remain—but now there is something more fundamental. Or rather, not more fundamental, but something that particularly troubles people: “Christianity has failed. It did not give us what we needed; it did not solve the social problem. Injustice remains. There are still the poor; there is still the employer and the worker, with one growing rich while the other goes hungry.”
People will say, “It did not solve the social problem. It did not solve the problem of peace in the world. We still have wars. So when we want to establish peace in the world, we convene the United Nations. We do not need Christ. Christ has failed.” Thus, we have what might be called two massive arguments for Christ’s supposed failure: He did not solve the social problem, and He did not bring peace to the world. First of all, as we have said, this is a cause of stumbling. These things are being said; I believe you hear them and read them. I am not telling you anything unfamiliar. But Christ said clearly, “What do you think? That I came to bring peace upon the earth? No.”
“A sword.” Are some of you hearing this for the first time? Begin studying Holy Scripture. Yes, He says, I came to bring a sword—and not a sword between one nation and another, but between people of the same household, between friends and relatives. A father will turn against his son and a son against his father, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law and vice versa, and so on. Why? It is not Christ who brought the sword. Christ brought peace, insofar as His Gospel is made known and accepted. For...
if the one who does not believe—my father, for example, who does not believe in Christ—becomes my enemy and takes up the sword himself, remember Saint Barbara and her father, and takes up the sword to kill me, is Christ to blame? So when Christ says, “I brought a sword, and not peace,” He does not mean that He is the bearer of the sword and of war. He means that those who reject the Gospel will turn against those who have accepted it. But I have said this many times, as you know. I will not dwell on it any longer, because every time I repeat it, I use up the time available to me.
Christianity did not come to solve any social system. I will remind you only of the feeding of the five thousand, when the people of Capernaum sought to proclaim Him king, and the Lord withdrew and disappeared. When they found Him, what did He tell them? “You speak and say these things because you ate and were filled. Do not seek the food that perishes, but the food that endures.” And what is that food? “My body,” He says—the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. That, He says, is what you should seek, not merely something to eat. To put it in plain language: “I did not come to solve your social problem.” If you wish the social problem to be solved, that is the work of human beings, as the result...
and consequence of their truly Christian way of life. If a society accepts the Gospel, the social problem is solved at once. It is solved naturally. Remember, for example, the common life of the Christians in Jerusalem. They were not communes—no, they were not communes. What does the Evangelist Luke say there? No one said, “This is mine” or “That is yours,” yet legal ownership, as we would call it, was not abolished. What made those Christians cease speaking of “mine” and “yours”? Love and faith in the person of Jesus Christ. Take note: legal ownership was not abolished.
Remember Barnabas, who sold his field. We have covered these things in the Book of Acts. Remember Ananias and Sapphira. What happened to them? “Was it not within your authority,” the Apostle Peter says, “whether to sell your field or not? And even after selling it, was it not within your authority to keep the money?” Why was he punished? Because he lied—not because he failed to give up his field or hand over the money, but because he lied. “You have not lied to a man,” he says, “but to the Holy Spirit.”
Therefore—therefore, if we ever come to understand this—and this is why I keep hammering it into your ears, if I could, in every talk, to guard you from stumbling in faith—Christ did not come into the world to solve the social problem, nor the problem of peace and war.
Let me put it this way. If the nations were truly Christian—take the nations called Christian: Bulgarians, Greeks, Russians, and farther west the French, the English, and the Americans—are we not Christian nations? Why, then, do we wage war against one another? Tell me, why do we wage war against one another? It means that we have not understood the Gospel. Why should we sit with rifles facing one another across the borders and then talk? Why should we say, “We are afraid of the Bulgarians; we are afraid of those farther away”? Why? The Bulgarians, moreover, are Orthodox Christians. But neither have we lived this Gospel. If we had lived it, there would be no problem. Is Christ to blame for this? We have not solved these problems because we have not solved our spiritual problem, the problem of faith. Yes!
Let me give you an example. A father leaves an inheritance to his child, and the child squanders it because he is wasteful and dissolute. In the end he finds himself on the street. Is the father to blame, when he left him an inheritance? The fault lies with the child’s foolishness: he had no sense, lived recklessly, and consumed his father’s estate. Is the father to blame? The father left it to him. If today you are poor and dragging yourself along the pavement, it is because you had no sense. So too here, we might say: Christians have no sense; they do not live the Christian life. That, my beloved, is precisely why we have come to this miserable condition. I stress these things again and again, solely so that we will not stumble over the person of Jesus Christ and fall away. There are, then, two areas, two phases within history.
The first concerns the divine-human person of Christ and the heresies directed against Him, as I told you: Arianism and Monophysitism. The second, which is also a contemporary issue, concerns the social problem and the problem of peace and war. But the Lord prophesies that this will certainly happen on earth. “Many will stumble and fall away,” He says. Many—and I repeat, many from among the Christians. This should fill us with contrition. Many! Might I also be among the many? Who can assure us, my beloved, that you who hear the Word of God—and I do not think you can complain that I have failed to explain these things to you—I analyze them for you...
to the point of excess, even tiring you with repetition, saying them again and again, so that no one may say, “But I did not hear; I did not know.” Yet we too can fall—all of us, even I who am speaking to you—if we are not watchful. Yes, if we are not watchful. You see, stumbling in faith is the cause. The Apostle Paul speaks of the Apostasy: unless the Apostasy comes first, he says, the Antichrist will not come; and unless the Antichrist comes, Christ will not come. Chronologically, then, we have the Apostasy, the Antichrist, and Christ.
But what is the Apostasy? The Apostasy is the effect, the result. The cause is that we will stumble in faith, and then the Apostasy will gradually begin. To show that this will certainly happen, listen to how the Lord Himself speaks of it in somewhat greater detail in the Apocalypse, to the angel of the Church in Philadelphia. This is Revelation 3:10. Listen to what He says: “Because you have kept the word of My patient endurance”—because you put into practice the message of patient endurance that I proclaim. That is what “My patient endurance” means: the message of patient endurance that I proclaim, namely, that you must show patient endurance in this world. The Lord said, “He who endures to the end shall be saved.”
The one who endures to the end will be saved. “And I also will keep you from the hour of temptation which is about to come upon the whole inhabited world, to test those who dwell upon the earth.” And I, in turn, because you have kept the patient endurance that I preached—that is, because you endure temptations patiently—I will preserve you from that difficult hour of temptation which is about to come. “From the hour of temptation which is about to come”—the hour that is coming—and this will be a worldwide event, “upon the whole inhabited world, to test those who dwell upon the earth.”
It will put to the test all who dwell upon the earth. In Holy Scripture, both in the Old Testament and in the New, the expression “upon the earth” often means simply the land of Judah or the land of Israel. Here, however, it does not mean the land of Judah, Palestine, or Israel, but “the whole inhabited world.” Do you see? The entire inhabited world. Thus, the expression means the whole earth wherever people dwell. That is precisely the meaning of the Greek word for inhabited world: it comes from the verb meaning “to dwell.” Therefore, this will be a worldwide event. What event? The Apostasy. And where will it come from? I repeat: from stumbling in faith.
The Apostasy will find its focal point in the Antichrist. The Antichrist will be the summing up of the Apostasy, its absolute culmination. Immediately afterward will come the Second Coming of our Lord. And so, my beloved, you see that the Apostasy is a very great and serious matter. If you ask me, “Is there Apostasy now?” Yes, there is. Has this Apostasy reached its height? No. Would you like me to prove it to you? You yourselves are the proof. Tell me: at this hour of the night, with the temperature below zero—below zero...
with all of Greece covered in snow, so many people are gathered here at this late hour to hear the Word of God. Can we say that the Apostasy has become universal?
No. Could I say that there are people here spying upon the Word of God? I cannot say that either. You are devout, and you come to hear the Word of God. Nor are you the only ones. There are very many people who are not living in Apostasy.
There are young people among our students—from primary schools, secondary schools, high schools, and our universities. There are devout children. But you may ask, “What about the majority?” Can you produce statistics? This is not something that can be measured statistically. If we tried to compile statistics, you and I might make the same mistake as the Prophet Elijah. He believed that he was alone. Do not forget that the case of the Prophet Elijah is set in parallel with the Last Things (eschata). Do not forget this. I am not saying it arbitrarily; I say it as the Apostle Paul does: just as in that time a remnant remained—that remainder which had not bowed the knee to Baal and had not worshiped the idols—so there were six thousand men, six thousand heads of households. If you count five people for each household—and families were much larger then—that gives at least thirty thousand people.
They did not kneel to worship Baal, and the Prophet Elijah did not know it. What did he say to God? “I alone, Lord, I utterly alone.” He intensifies the word “alone” to the highest degree. “I alone remain to worship You.” “No,” God tells him, “there are six thousand who worship Me.” God had hidden this even from him, though he was a prophet, and revealed it when Elijah said, “I alone remain.” And what does the Apostle Paul say? The Apostle Paul says that, just as there was a remnant then, so there will be a remnant now. The Apostle Paul says this.
Therefore—therefore, there will always be a remnant, even in the days of the Antichrist. At this moment, however, it is not merely a remnant; it is something more than a remnant—lambda, epsilon, iota, mu, mu, alpha, with a circumflex. Take note, my beloved: it is something more. Of course, you may tell me that devout people may be fewer in number. We do not know how many they are. We do not know. And in the younger generation there are devout children and devout young men and women. So, has the Apostasy reached its fullness? I do not see that it has. Yet Apostasy certainly exists. We have publicly insulted Christ and the Church.
The Apostasy, as I have told you—and I say it now for the third time—will bring forth the Antichrist. So, my beloved, this is what I wanted to tell you, so that we may understand the Lord’s words, “Many will stumble and fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another.” Bishops will rise against bishops, clergy against clergy, and peoples against peoples, even to the shedding of blood, and so forth. Saint Cyril says, “If you hear that bishops rise against bishops, clergy against clergy, and peoples against peoples, even to bloodshed, do not be troubled.” If you hear, he says, that bishops turn against bishops, clergy against clergy, and peoples against peoples, even to the shedding of blood...
peoples against peoples to the point of bloodshed, and bishops and priests likewise to the point of bloodshed—do not be troubled. “For it has been written beforehand.” It has been foretold.
Truly, how powerfully Saint Cyril speaks through this passage! You know that Saint Cyril lived amid the Arian heresy, during the period when Arianism prevailed. You know that he was driven from his see as Bishop of Jerusalem and later restored to it. In other words, he lived through a very difficult time. It was only natural that, viewing events through the circumstances of his own age, he should feel overwhelmed by them.
This is a sign for us, even though it was given in the fourth century. Of course, the Antichrist did not appear then; another sixteen centuries passed. So even if we see such things in our own time, we cannot say, “You should know that the Antichrist will come in five, ten, or twenty years.” We cannot say that. Pay close attention to this point. Do you see how the Saints perceive things from the vantage point of their own age? And why can their judgment be mistaken? Because Christ said plainly that you do not know the day or the hour. You have only the signs. Indeed, Saint Cyril is rather hasty in interpreting those signs. What does he say? “Do you see these things? Then it is near.”
My beloved, we too see the signs, but we cannot set a date beforehand. Pay close attention to this. The example of Saint Cyril, which I mentioned to you last time as well, is very useful to us. We simply see, we might say, a developing situation, a process that continues to advance. Crimes were committed then too. Remember Saint Athanasius: they accused him of murdering someone. Do you hear that? Of murdering someone! Crimes were indeed committed. They sought to kill Athanasius the Great. Many crimes took place. And consider also the age of Iconoclasm—
even from the little history we are able to know, how many crimes were committed, as the iconoclasts killed those who venerated the icons. Think of all those whom we call Confessors. We often speak, for example, of Saint Maximus the Confessor. In a Christian era, among a Christian people, he was compelled to confess the truth before emperors, rulers, and others who had fallen into heresy; and he suffered torment—his tongue was cut out, and so forth. They are called Confessors because they bore witness and suffered, not at the hands of enemies of Christianity such as pagans, but at the hands of heretics. Thus, we have seen things carried to the point of bloodshed, as well as the absence of love.
Among bishops and priests—what can I say about this? Perhaps one ought to speak of it with many tears: that there is no love among the clergy. How dreadful! It is a sign, a sign. Of course, it is not universal—God forbid. There are priests who dearly love not only their flock but also their fellow priests. There are wonderful bishops who love not only their people but also their priests, their own clergy, as well as their fellow bishops. But the other reality also exists. There are cases of hatred, one person against another, both among bishops and among priests. This is a tragedy. Yet Saint Cyril says, “Even if I, who teach you, should perish, you need not perish with me.” Take heed: if I am lost because I, a bishop, harbor hatred or malice, or because I am a heretic or anything else, must you also be lost—you, the catechumen who now listens to me? “You, the hearer, may become better than your teacher, and the one who came last may become first, since the Master also receives those who came at the eleventh hour.” The one being taught—
the disciple—may become greater than the teacher. This is possible. The teacher may be lost; the catechist may be lost. That does not mean the disciple or the catechumen must be lost as well. “If betrayal was found among the Apostles, are you astonished if hatred of one’s brethren is found among bishops?” If one betrayer was found among those twelve Apostles of Christ, are you surprised—are you astonished—if hatred of one’s brethren is found among bishops? Of course not. But pay attention to one point. How should the catechist conduct himself—and I beg you, pay very close attention to this—how should the catechist conduct himself?
How should the spiritual father, the priest, or the bishop stand before the people, before the catechumens? Listen to how he should do so.
The people see the person of the catechist, but they do not see Christ. They admire the catechist so deeply that they would even give their lives for him—but not for Christ; for the catechist. Where is Christ? Christ is behind the catechist’s back and cannot be seen; the catechist hides Him. In the beginning, this must be so, because a newcomer needs to admire the catechist. Otherwise, he will not remain a catechumen. He needs to say, “Ah, what a wonderful catechist! He has holiness; he has wisdom.”
“He is an exceptional man.” He needs to say this, just as a pupil at school does. If the teacher does not possess this kind of bearing, he cannot command respect in the classroom; and the pupil cannot truly become his student or trust him. But the genuine catechist does not spend his whole life gathering catechumens around his own person while keeping Christ hidden. No. In the most natural way, when the catechumens begin to mature spiritually, what does he do then?
He begins to move aside—little by little, step by step—withdrawing and revealing Christ. Slowly, gradually. Take heed: it must happen this way. At first, he must hide Christ, because the catechumen is not yet able to see very much. But the catechist will gradually move aside until he has fully revealed Christ. Then, without ceasing to move, the catechist will pass behind Christ and disappear, so that the catechumen sees no one else upon his horizon but Jesus Christ. This is the proper order. If we insist on always standing in front—
of the catechumens and refuse to reveal Christ, we are in error: we are usurping Christ’s place, and we will certainly give an account to God. Moreover, when temptation comes, the people will not be firmly established in Christ—and that is what matters. But if the catechist, being human, should fail—I do not mean that he dies, but that he is swept away—what will the catechumens do if he has never revealed Christ to them? They too will be lost along with him. Would it seem strange to you if you saw me cast off my cassock, get married, and dance the tsifteteli? What would you say? “For God’s sake,” you would say, “for God’s sake, you are an old man!” For old men do not marry; old men do not marry. And what would you do if you saw me like that? You would stumble in your faith. Why do I dare to say these things? Because Saint Cyril says them.
As I said, Saint Cyril tells us: “If you see me being lost, that does not mean that you must be lost as well.” Why? Because Saint Cyril allows for this possibility concerning himself. Is he not human? If he were swept away and lost, must the catechumens be lost too? Please, hold firmly to these things. I will tell you something dreadful.
Saint Cyril
Does it matter if I have told you this before? When I was a small child, I had a female catechist. We were both quite young. I must have been about eleven, and she was a young woman of sixteen or seventeen. She was a catechist, just as we often appoint young boys and girls as catechists. But when things are not carefully weighed, they sometimes go astray, and there is some danger in that. Of course, I loved this young woman very much. She was my catechist. She married and, as far as I know, suffered misfortune in her married life—I will not pry into the details. The point is that she married three times.
Her first husband died, so she married a second. She divorced the second and married a third, and then divorced the third as well. In the end, she became a prostitute. She had six children, whom she placed in an orphanage. And listen: one day, many years later, shortly before I entered Holy Orders—I was already grown—I met her on a bus. I greeted her. I still felt respect for her. We began to talk. What did she say to me? “Do you still believe the things I used to teach you?” How horrifying! She was asking whether I still believed today the things she had taught us, now that she herself had cast them away.
What was I supposed to say? Was I supposed to say, “If my catechist has renounced Christ, why am I even thinking of becoming a clergyman? Forget it—none of it is real. I too will go and enjoy my life”? Was that what I should have said? How deeply I grieved—how deeply! I told her that I had cast nothing away, because although I loved my catechist, she was not someone who could separate me from Christ. Please listen carefully to these things, because in a time of persecution even shepherds will betray Christ. For what special privilege do I have that would make it impossible—God forbid—for me to betray Christ? We do not know how we will respond.
We do not know, unless we have humility. Then perhaps—perhaps—we may be able to stand firm. Therefore, so that no one is lost or stumbles in faith because of his spiritual fathers, let him say: “Whatever may happen to my spiritual father or my catechist, whatever he may become, I love Christ.” Yet this also depends, to some extent, on the catechist, the spiritual father, the bishop, or the priest: he must reveal Jesus Christ. Nothing prevents us from loving our spiritual father. But we must never betray Christ if our spiritual father falls.
It is just as we love the Saints. The Apostle Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews, “Remember those who rule over you.” Remember those who spoke the word of God to you and who, he says, struggle for you night and day, because they will give an account for your souls. We are obliged to love our spiritual fathers. I am not the one saying this; the Word of God says it. Yet the fall of our spiritual father must never become the cause of our stumbling in faith, rejecting the faith, or saying, “Oh well, none of it means anything.” No! I will consider this congregation mature when it can stand firm and believe in Jesus Christ regardless of the spiritual condition and—
the character of those who taught them about Christ. But let us continue.
“This sign concerns not only the rulers, but also the people. For He says: ‘And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.’ Who, then, among those present can boast of having sincere love for his neighbor?” The sign is not only this hatred among the rulers—meaning the rulers of the Church—but it also concerns the people, the nations, all mankind. Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold; it will freeze. This is already happening among people, though not yet to a terrifying degree. As I told you, we do not yet have, to a terrifying degree,
apostasy. I think you understand this yourselves. There are devout people, as I said earlier, with beautiful feelings and good hearts. But what does he say here? That hearts will freeze. Did you hear his words? “The love of many will grow cold.” In other words, the love of many will become like a refrigerator, and people will become—as I have told you before—walking refrigerators. What a terrible thing! Walking refrigerators! When that happens, things will not be pleasant at all. But Saint Cyril says, “Tell me, among those present”—now it is your turn—“who has sincere friendship toward his neighbor?”
“Do not the lips often kiss, while the face smiles and the eyes pretend to be cheerful, yet the heart devises deceit and plots evil even while speaking words of peace?” Saint Cyril was asking: Who among those present, among his catechumens, truly loves his neighbor? Do the lips not often speak in a friendly way, while the face smiles and the eyes appear cheerful and glad, yet inwardly the heart is working evil? The person speaks peacefully,
but inwardly has other purposes. My beloved, I will tell you this as well. I have spoken about the rulers and about those who lead; now I will speak about the people. There is no love. Let some little thing happen. What sort of thing? Not a dispute over property, but merely over a chair. A chair, a chair! “Why did you take my chair? Why did you put your umbrella on the chair beside you? I am going to sit there.” “No, my girlfriend or my friend is going to sit there.” And then we quarrel and quarrel. Do we have love? What would happen if someone took our field or moved our boundary lines? What if they insulted us, publicly humiliated us, or published accusations against us? They would come out hurling vile abuse at us.
My beloved, we do not have love. Let us examine ourselves. Perhaps Saint Cyril—or rather, the Spirit of God through the writings of Saint Cyril—is helping us to make this self-examination. We do not have love. I assure you; I am telling you the truth. You may ask, “Does that mean everyone?” No, not everyone. But even in those who have love, love is something that can increase and something that can diminish. Who can assure them that they possess so much love that they have no need of any more? Our love must continually increase, just as our faith must continually increase. Did not the disciples say to the Lord, “Lord, increase our faith”?
Increase our faith. Just as faith can increase or diminish, so too love can increase or diminish. Where should we begin? Do not run off to your neighbor, or to Zaire, or to Abyssinia. Begin with your wife, your husband, and your children. We cannot speak of love for starving children in Abyssinia when we have no love for our own wife and children, and when we quarrel day and night at home because of our egotism. Egotism destroys love. Love and egotism are like fire and water: each extinguishes and destroys the other. Can we possibly have love without first doing away with egotism? So we must begin with what is our own,
with our own home. When we have love for our wife or husband and for our children, then we will be able to speak peacefully to our neighbor, and to the next person, and to the one beyond him. Then, when we send our contribution to a hungry child in Africa, or to any other place on earth where a person or a child may be starving, the money and bread we give will truly serve their purpose, because they will come from a loving heart. In this way, my beloved, we can say that we are free from hypocrisy and possess true love. And now I come to the eighth paragraph: “You have this sign as well: ‘And this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached’”
“‘throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.’ And, as we can see, almost the entire world has been filled with the teaching concerning Christ.” Here is one more sign. What is it? The Gospel of Christ’s Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, throughout all the inhabited earth, as a testimony to every nation. Pay attention: as a testimony. Mark this point carefully. It does not mean that the nations will have believed. Rather, if they do not believe, it will stand as testimony against them: the preaching of the Gospel reached them, but they did not believe. And then the end will come. Saint Cyril comments, “As we can see, almost the entire world—the whole world—has been filled with the teaching of Christ.” Notice: he does not say that everyone has believed, but that the world has been filled with the teaching. Do you know what that means? It means that the Gospel will be preached, just as the Lord said. The Lord said that first the Gospel would be preached, and afterward the end would come. Yes, but you may say that we know Christians make up about one-third of the earth’s population, or somewhat less. There are five billion people. Perhaps we might say one-fifth. There are
only one billion Christians—yes, one thousand million. The other four thousand million are not Christians. Yes, but the Gospel has nevertheless been preached throughout the world. And once again, here you see Saint Cyril in the fifth century—forgive me, the fourth century. What lay within his field of vision? What we today would call the world known at that time. But the world as we know it today is far larger. It was not only the Mediterranean, nor even the lands farther east, what we call the Near East or the Middle East. They did not even possess knowledge of Africa as we know Africa today. What did they know? Only the coasts of Africa. That, then, is the perspective from which he speaks.
Saint Cyril could not make a complete assessment. This is entirely natural, as I explained to you. You see, such assessments are relative. What would we say today? Today, my beloved, the Gospel has been translated into seventeen hundred languages—sixteen hundred languages and dialects. In Chinese, the Gospel has been translated into every dialect. The Gospel has reached the ends of the inhabited earth, to a greater or lesser extent. Do not imagine that the whole world must become Christian. No, it will not. It never will. The Gospel will stand only as a testimony, as a witness: “I came to your door; I came to your people; I was translated into your language; yet you did not receive me and did not believe.” And then
the end will come. But what will happen next? As he says in the ninth paragraph: “And what happens after this?” There is still another sign: “Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place—let the reader understand—” and again, “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it.” What is this abomination of desolation, my beloved, which the Prophet Daniel said would stand in a holy place? The holy place is the Temple. And what was the abomination that was set up there?
A statue of Zeus and of the Roman emperor. That was the abomination. “When you see this,” He says, “then...” But we shall continue next Monday, God willing.

Είχαμε κάνει ήδη μία μικρή ανάλυση, αλλά επειδή ο χρόνος είχε συμπληρωθεί και δεν είχε ολοκληρωθεί αυτή η ανάλυση, γι' αυτό επιτρέψατέ μου να σχολιάσω αυτό το σημείο, «Σκανδαλισθήσονται πολλοί», που είπε ο Κύριος. Σε τι θα σκανδαλιστούν;
ολόκληρη η Ελλάδα είναι σκεπασμένη με χιόνια και βρίσκεται εδώ μέσα τόσος κόσμος να ακούσει, τέτοια ώρα, νύχτα, τον Λόγο του Θεού. Μπορούμε να λέμε ότι έχει γενικευθεί η Αποστασία;
Όχι.
μαθητής να γίνει ανώτερος από τον διδάσκαλο. Επιτρέπεται. Μπορεί ο διδάσκαλος να χαθεί, μπορεί ο κατηχητής να χαθεί. Δεν σημαίνει με αυτό ότι πρέπει να χαθεί και ο μαθητής, να χαθεί ο κατηχούμενος. «Ή εν Αποστόλοις ευρέθη προδοσία, και θαυμάζεις ει εν Επισκόποις ευρίσκεται μισαδελφία;» Αν ανάμεσα στους δώδεκα εκείνους Αποστόλους του Χριστού ευρέθηκε ένας προδότης, απορείς, θαυμάζεις, απορείς αν ανάμεσα στους Επισκόπους βρίσκεται η μισαδελφία; Βεβαίως. Αλλά προσέξτε ένα σημείο. Πώς πρέπει να στέκεται —πολύ προσέξτε αυτό το σημείο, σας παρακαλώ— πώς πρέπει να στέκεται ο κατηχητής;
Σπουδαίος. Είναι ανάγκη να το πει, όπως ακριβώς θα το πει ο μαθητής στο σχολείο. Εάν ο καθηγητής, ο δάσκαλος ή ο καθηγητής δεν διαθέτει αυτή τη στάση, δεν μπορεί να έχει κύρος μέσα εις την τάξη και δεν μπορεί ο μαθητής να γίνει μαθητής και να πιστέψει τον δάσκαλο, εάν δεν είναι έτσι. Αλλά ο γνήσιος κατηχητής δεν συγκεντρώνει τους κατηχουμένους περί το πρόσωπόν του, κρύβοντας μια ζωή τον Χριστόν. Όχι. Αλλά φυσιολογικότατα, όταν οι κατηχούμενοι αρχίσουν να ωριμάζουν πνευματικά, τότε τι κάνει;
Αποστασία. Νομίζω ότι το καταλαβαίνετε μόνοι σας. Υπάρχουν ευλαβείς άνθρωποι, σας είπα προηγουμένως, με ωραία αισθήματα, ωραίες καρδιές. Εδώ τι λέγει; Ότι θα παγώσουν οι καρδιές. Είδατε τι είπε; «Ψυγήσεται η αγάπη των πολλών». Δηλαδή θα γίνει ψυγείο η αγάπη των πολλών και οι άνθρωποι θα είναι, όπως κι άλλοτε σας το έχω πει, περιφερόμενα ψυγεία. Τι φοβερό πράγμα! Περιφερόμενα ψυγεία! Ε, λοιπόν, τότε τα πράγματα δεν θα είναι καθόλου ευχάριστα. Αλλά, λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, πέστε μου από τους παρόντας —ήρθε τώρα και η σειρά σας— από τους παρόντας ποιος είναι εκείνος που έχει ανυπόκριτον φιλίαν;
σκυλοβρίζοντάς μας. Αγαπητοί μου, δεν έχουμε αγάπη. Ε, ας κάνουμε μια αυτοκριτική. Ίσως εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, το Πνεύμα του Θεού δηλαδή, διά των συγγραφών του Αγίου Κυρίλλου, μας βοηθάει να κάνουμε αυτήν την αυτοκριτική. Δεν έχουμε αγάπη. Σας το βεβαιώνω. Σας το λέγω αλήθεια. Θα μου πείτε, όλοι; Όχι όλοι. Αλλά και εκείνοι που έχουν αγάπη, η αγάπη είναι κάτι που προστίθεται, όπως και αφαιρείται. Ποιος τους βεβαιώνει ότι έχουν τόση αγάπη, ώστε πια δεν έχουν ανάγκη από άλλη αγάπη; Πρέπει να έχουμε αγάπη προστιθεμένη, όπως και πίστη προστιθεμένη. Δεν έλεγαν οι μαθητές του Κυρίου, «Κύριε, πρόσθες ημίν πίστιν»;
θα έρθει το τέλος. Αλλά το τι θα γίνει παρακάτω, όπως λέει στην ενάτη παράγραφο: «Και τι μετά τούτο γίνεται;» Τι θα γίνει μετά από αυτό; Έχουμε κι ακόμα ένα σημείο. «Όταν ουν ίδητε το βδέλυγμα της ερημώσεως, το ρηθέν υπό Δανιήλ του προφήτου, εστώς εν τόπω αγίω —ο αναγινώσκων νοείτω—» και πάλι, «τότε εάν τις υμίν είπη· ιδού, ώδε ο Χριστός ή ώδε, μη πιστεύσητε». Ποιο είναι αυτό, αγαπητοί μου, το βδέλυγμα της ερημώσεως, αυτό που ειπώθηκε από τον προφήτη Δανιήλ να στέκεται, εστώς, να στέκεται σε τόπον άγιο; Ο τόπος ο άγιος είναι ο Ναός. Και ποιο ήταν το βδέλυγμα που στήθηκε;
