Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem explains that Christ revealed the signs of the end so believers could await His return without being deceived by the Antichrist. Eschatological vigilance preserves the Church’s spiritual life, whereas assuming that the Lord delays encourages hypocrisy and moral negligence. Wars, rumors of wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes have appeared repeatedly throughout history, so believers must recognize them without using them to calculate the end prematurely.

Beloved, we are in the fifteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, in the fourth paragraph, though not at its beginning. We are at verse 34. Those of you who happen to have the book before you and are following along, it is verse 34: “But since we must know the signs of the consummation, and since we await Christ, so that we may not die deceived and be led astray by the false Antichrist, the Apostles, moved by divine purpose within the Divine Economy, approach the true Teacher and say...”
“When will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your Second Coming and of the consummation of the age? We await You coming again, but Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore, keep us safe, so that we do not worship another in Your place.” Since, Saint Cyril says...
we needed to know the signs of the consummation, and since we await Christ, lest we die spiritually after being deceived by the delusion of the Antichrist—this false Christ, this false messiah, the Antichrist—the Apostles were moved by divine purpose and asked their true Teacher, our Lord Jesus Christ. They said to Him, “Please tell us, according to the Divine Economy, so that these things may also be recorded in Holy Scripture.” They are written down; they are preserved in the Gospels.
“Tell us, what will be the sign of Your Second Coming and of the end of history, the consummation of the age?” The consummation of the age means—the consummation, that is, forgive me—the consummation of the age is the end of history. “For we await You, but since we also know that the devil comes as an angel of light, please tell us the signs of Your Second Coming, so that we may not be deceived and lost.” That is, tell us the signs that will precede Your Second Coming. “And He, opening His divine and blessed mouth...”
Indeed, this took place, as you know, on the Mount of Olives, when the disciples questioned Him there. John and Peter were there, and...
one of His disciples—Thomas, I cannot remember—Matthew, yes, Matthew. “Tell us.” Of course, they were the ones who asked, though the other disciples were also present. “Tell us the signs of the consummation.” And, as I told you, they were on the Mount of Olives. Notice that the disciples had already been marveling at the Temple of Herod. It was not the first time, of course, that they had seen it. We do not call it Solomon’s Temple, because that had been destroyed and then rebuilt by Zerubbabel. It was rebuilt yet again by Herod, and they marveled at its beautiful, splendid buildings. They said to the Lord, “Lord, look at these magnificent buildings.” And the Lord said to them, “Do you see these things? Not one stone will be left upon another.”
Because the Lord said this, the disciples understood that something very serious was going to happen: this civilization that had been built up—or even this very place—would be destroyed. So they asked Him, “If these things will coincide with Your coming, tell us what signs there will be, so that we may not be led astray.” The words “so that we may not be led astray” are not, of course, written in the Gospels. Saint Cyril adds them, but they are implied. And the Lord began to tell them the signs. Before I continue, however, pay attention while I make a comment about these signs.
Someone might quite reasonably think: if the end is unknown, and if the Lord clearly told them that they neither knew nor would know it, because it belongs to the knowledge of God alone and it is not their task to pry into matters that belong to God’s knowledge, then the end is indeed unknown. The day and hour of the Lord’s Second Coming are unknown. Is there not a contradiction, then, when the Lord now speaks to them about signs? Let me give you an example: how can we tell when dawn is approaching if we have no clock?
We will hear the roosters crow. What is the crowing of the roosters? It is a sign—a sign that dawn is approaching. Yes, but notice something. Please remember the example I am giving you, because we may need it later today. The roosters crow at about two, then again around four or five, and then once more after that. So when the roosters crow, dawn is approaching—but at what stage before dawn are we? Is it two, three, four, or five o’clock? Where exactly are we? Therefore, beloved, there is no contradiction in principle.
The Lord wishes to give these signs to His faithful. The signs are only for the faithful. They are not for unbelievers; they do not apply to unbelievers. But are they contradictory? No. Notice one detail: “But concerning that day and hour, no one knows.” What did He say? I do not know whether we have paid attention to this point: “Concerning that day and hour.” This means the precise day and hour—a specific detail. He did not speak about the year or the month, but about the day and the hour. This means that the signs...
do indeed indicate the end, but they do not reveal its exact moment. That is why He said, “concerning the day and hour,” and did not say, “concerning the century” or “concerning the year.” He could have said the twentieth century or the twenty-fifth century. No, that is not necessarily unknowable. Which century will it be? Which year will it be? Must that remain unknown? No, the signs may indicate it. What cannot be determined? The exact moment—the day and the hour. So we can make a broad estimate of certain things.
Yes, we can. How are we to understand this? Through the example I gave you of the rooster, or the roosters. The roosters crow at two, they crow at three, and they crow at five. Keep this point in mind; we will return to it shortly. What I wish to explain to you now is that there is no contradiction...
between the fact that the Second Coming is unknown and the existence of the signs. There is no contradiction. Furthermore, it is not sinful for us to concern ourselves with the signs. For if we were forbidden to examine when Christ’s Second Coming will take place, as though such an inquiry were meddlesome and irreverent curiosity...
But we must examine them.
On the contrary, we are obliged to concern ourselves with the signs that will reveal the approach of the end. As I said, this is not merely permissible; it is required. I will show you immediately. The Lord rebuked and reproached the rulers of the people because they failed to recognize His First Coming. As is well known—and I believe I have said this before—the Last Things are always understood in relation to the coming of Christ. Thus, there are two comings, and there are also two sets of Last Things. The first Last Things relate to the First Coming, while the second Last Things relate to...
the Second Coming. Humanity awaited Christ at His First Coming, and He came. The appointed time drew near and grew short; it reached its completion, and Christ came. In the same way, this second period of time is drawing near and growing short. We are approaching its end, and Christ is coming. People, of course, were expected to await Christ. There were signs, and the prophets had given signs of His First Coming. People studied those signs. Let me give you a few examples from Holy Scripture.
Another sign was that Christ would be born in Bethlehem. Would you like another? The seventy weeks of the Prophet Daniel indicate the time. These are signs. Would you like to see that the leaders of God’s people did indeed recognize these signs? Yet their sinful and vainglorious lives kept them from doing anything more than considering them theoretically. When the three Magi arrived—were there three Magi? They were not necessarily three; we do not know how many there were—they came to Jerusalem and asked where else but at the palace: “Where is the King of the Jews to be born?” Herod was terrified and summoned the chief priests, scribes, and experts in the Law.
He learned what the prophets had said and was informed that Christ was to be born in Bethlehem. The Magi did not know this, nor did Herod, but the star did indeed lead them to Bethlehem. How did this happen? Did the religious leaders not know that He was to be born in Bethlehem? They did. Was this a sign? It was. Could this sign coincide with the fulfillment of the prophecy? Certainly, certainly. Did they take the trouble to go and see, even together with the Magi, this momentous event that everyone was speaking about? Did they make the effort? They did not. In other words, they did not make use of the sign. Now listen to how the Lord rebukes them: “Hypocrites...”
“You know how to discern the signs of the sky.” You say, “The sky is fiery red”—the Greek word for “fiery red” is spelled with an upsilon; that is, the sky is red. In our region, as you know, when the eastern sky is red, we say it will rain. But when the western sky is red, we say we will have fair weather. I repeat, this is true in our region, because every place has its own weather patterns. That is perfectly natural. In other words, you recognize meteorological signs and know how to interpret them. You say, “Tomorrow it will be windy,” or, “It will rain,” or, “We will have fair weather.” Why, then, do you not examine the signs of the times? And what are the signs of the times? Which times? Spiritual times—or, more precisely, the times...
of the Incarnation. These are the signs He means. Why do you not examine them? And He calls them hypocrites. Saint Ignatius, moreover, sent a letter to Saint Polycarp, whose feast we celebrate today—Saint Polycarp, that wonderful Apostolic Father. What did he tell him? “Study the times carefully, and await Him who is beyond time.” He did not merely say, “Learn the times,” but, “Study them thoroughly.” In other words, examine them and strive to understand them with complete accuracy and attention to detail...
the times. And what are you to seek within these times? Always the last times: “Await Him who is beyond time,” for this is the final, objective goal of our search. First of all, we would say: “Study the times thoroughly.” Observe the signs, and within those signs seek Him whom we await. Let us continue. This, then, is a tradition of the Church, a tradition beginning with the prophets. The Lord emphasized it. The Lord now gives signs of His Second Coming. We therefore have a duty; we have been commanded to learn these signs. I hope there is no longer any doubt about this matter. Let us continue.
“He who opened His divine and blessed mouth says.” What did the Lord say? “Take heed that no one deceives you.” Be watchful; be careful that no one leads you astray. And Saint Cyril says to us, with great grace: “Let us who are listening now behold Him with the eyes of our understanding, and hear Him speaking these same words to us: ‘Take heed that no one deceives you.’” Saint Cyril is saying this also to you who are listening—to his catechumens. With the eyes of your understanding, behold Him who said, “Take heed that no one deceives you.” Be watchful.
And I, in my turn, my beloved, say the same to you who are listening: behold the Lord noetically, with the eyes of your soul, as He says to you, “Take heed that no one deceives you.” “And the word exhorts us all to pay attention to what is being said. For this is not a history of events that have passed, but a prophecy of things yet to come and certain to take place. It is not we who prophesy—for we are unworthy—but we bring forward what has been written and proclaim the signs. See which of them have already taken place, which still remain, and make yourself secure.” That is to say...
the Word of God exhorts us all to pay attention to what He says. And what the Lord said is not a history that has passed, a history of past events, but a prophecy of things yet to come and certain to take place—things belonging to the future that will most certainly come. “And certain to take place”: esomai is the future tense of eimi. They will most certainly come. Therefore, this is not a history belonging to the past. Take heed. It is not that we ourselves are prophesying, for we are unworthy to prophesy, says Saint Cyril.
We bring forward the signs that have been written. And take heed: you are to observe what has already taken place and what still remains to take place, and see to it that you keep yourself secure. So which events had already taken place? Saint Cyril delivered these catechetical lectures in AD 350, in the middle of the fourth century. Several centuries had therefore passed since the time of Christ; some time had elapsed. And because the Church always kept the end before her eyes, Christians always possessed this awareness, this eschatological concern and expectation, though no one knew when the end would come.
No one—not even the Apostles. No one. The Lord said so plainly: no one. Yet they possess that expectation which the Church must always preserve, so that her ecclesiological and Christological consciousness may remain vigorous and she may possess spiritual life. If the Church does not keep this eschatological expectation alive and strong, she falls into decline; she withers away. Do you know what the leaders of the Church—the clergy and pastors—and the people will begin to say? Exactly what is said in the parable, which applies directly to this point: “My master is delaying.” And that wicked steward, it says, begins...
to beat the servants and maidservants—that is, to oppress the flock—and to eat and drink and keep company with drunkards. “My master is delaying; go to sleep.” “My master is delaying”—that is, he is slow in coming. Yet the Lord says that he will come at an hour when the steward does not expect him, and will cut him in two. To cut in two means to separate the body from the soul. Then He will cast him into Hell with the hypocrites. Do you know what that means? The very bottom of Hell. If you ask what the bottom of Hell is—someone asked me yesterday—it is...
the bottom. It must truly be the bottom. Are there degrees of punishment in Hell? Yes, and there are also degrees of reward in the Kingdom of God. Someone who has barely been saved cannot receive the same reward as the Apostle Paul. The Word of God says that “one star differs from another star in glory,” and so forth. And the one who knew little will receive few blows, while the one who knew much will receive many. The one who knew will be beaten many times. So what is the bottom of Hell? It is the place where the hypocrites are found. What a dreadful thing! But we must understand what hypocrisy is: it is the inconsistency between knowledge and action. Hypocrisy is not...
merely pretending for a moment before another person, though even that is not good. Hypocrisy is not a good thing. Could that also be hypocrisy? Yes, it can. To pretend to be someone’s friend while secretly digging a pit for him—that is hypocrisy. It is. But in the strict sense, hypocrisy is the inconsistency between one’s life—pay attention—and one’s faith: believing one thing and living in a different way. To see that this is so, listen again to the parable. What did that harsh steward in the parable say? “My master is delaying.”
He will be late in coming; he is delaying. So the steward does expect the master to come; he merely pushes his coming far into the future. Therefore, he has faith. But what is his life like? He keeps company with drunkards. And his master assigns him a place with the hypocrites. This is hypocrisy: the inconsistency between faith and life. But you will say to me, “Then we are all hypocrites.” My beloved, yes. My beloved, yes—both I and you. Who lives in perfect consistency with his faith? But there is a difference: we struggle, and we acknowledge this inconsistency. We do not want it to exist. We confess it, and we desire our faith and our life to become one.
“Which still remain, and which have already taken place”—you are to observe these things—“and make yourself secure.” We now come to the fifth paragraph. “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will deceive many.” Saint Cyril says: “These things have already been partially fulfilled, for Simon Magus, Menander, and certain other godless founders of heresies have already said this. Others will say it in our own time or after us.” The Lord says, “Take heed that no one deceives you.” Deceives you about what? The central point of deception is the person of the Messiah. That is the heart of the matter. If someone deceives me and leads me into a brothel, that is a deception. If someone deceives me on Clean Monday, when I am ready to fast, gets me drunk, and then has me begin eating meat, that too is a deception. All these are deceptions, as is anything else concerning the moral life. But the great deception concerns the person of the Messiah. Pay close attention to this point. Here I would say that this resembles what we see in the Old Testament.
God, of course, gave the Ten Commandments. A professor of the Old Testament once wondered how some of the great figures of the Old Testament could sin, and sin gravely. David, for example, sinned. And the astonishing thing is that, after sinning with Bathsheba, he did not leave her. You may say that her husband had died—or rather, that he had been killed. He was killed because David arranged for him to be killed. It was a terrible thing. The first child was born but died. The second child was Solomon. How did God accept Solomon and allow Bathsheba eventually to become David’s wife?
Some of these things seem utterly strange and perplexing, and yet David is regarded as a preeminent figure alongside Abraham. The Messiah is not called merely a descendant of Abraham, but a descendant of David, from the root of Jesse—that is, the root from which David came. God is certainly concerned with His entire Law, but the central emphasis falls upon the person of God. David never allowed his heart to turn away from God. He falls into adultery, then composes Psalm 50 and says to Nathan the Prophet, “I have sinned against the Lord.” He never denies God.
God never disappears from David’s field of vision. His disposition toward God is deeply devout. Yet David was not watchful; he was no extraordinary exception. He committed sins and was human, just as I, you, and all of us can commit sins. But where does the weight fall? Upon faith, upon the person of God. Did Saul commit any such sins? No. Why was he rejected? Because he was a man whose inner disposition was not pleasing to God. When he was reproved, he rejected the correction, and so God rejected him definitively. Therefore, my beloved...
the central virtue is never to turn away from the true person of God—in this case, from the divine-human person of Christ. Many false christs will appear. You may have fallen into adultery, fornication, murder, theft, or any other sin. But if you have not turned your face away from Christ—from the true Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth—you can still return! Thank you.
Therefore, the central concern is faith in the divine-human person of Christ. For however sinful I may have been, I can return and be saved. My beloved, you have committed sins in your lives. Thank you.
Or rather, we have committed sins in our lives. Why are we here now, listening to the Word of God? Because we have not departed from the divine-human person of Christ. We were not deceived in the faith, though we were deceived in the way we lived. We went astray in life, but not in faith. The prodigal son in the parable, whom we spoke about two Sundays ago, went astray in the way he lived.
He did not forget his father. He returned. But the deception from which I cannot return is to accept as God or as the Messiah someone who is not the true Messiah. Here Saint Cyril mentions Simon Magus and Menander. Simon Magus is known from the Acts of the Apostles. The poor wretch was even baptized, if you please, but I do not wish to dwell any longer on his story; it is not worth the effort. Menander was one of the Gnostics. This gives you an idea of what Gnosticism is. Menander, like other Gnostics, belonged among those whom Saint Cyril calls “certain other godless founders of heresies.”
Certain other godless founders of heresies. There have indeed been founders of heresies. First and foremost, they depart from the true faith concerning the person of Christ. When Arius said that Jesus Christ was a created being...
he was plainly leading people away from the true faith, because the person of Jesus Christ is not a created being. He is the Son of God who became man. These millennialists, who endlessly repeat the heresy of the Arians, are plainly godless; they therefore depart from the true person of the God-Man, Jesus Christ. Yet there have also been heretics who claimed the title of Messiah for themselves. Arius did not say, “I am the Messiah.” He simply attacked the Messiah.
He altered, we might say, the person of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. But there were also heretics, such as Montanus and others, who claimed to be messiahs. Montanus, who was active in Asia Minor, even claimed to be the incarnation of the Holy Spirit. And people flock to them, my dear friends. But lest you think that these things belong only to history, Saint Cyril says that they exist and will continue to exist until the end of the world. Take that Korean, Moon. You will have read about him in the newspapers. He proclaimed himself the Messiah and said that Christ's title had only been temporary.
It belonged to an earlier age, he said. Now he himself is the Messiah. Do you hear that?
He tried here in Greece to win over Orthodox Christians. He attempted to establish centers in Crete, elsewhere, and in Athens, and protests were made against him. You see? So we do have false christs. And the culmination of this falsification of the person of Christ is the Antichrist. He will proclaim himself the Messiah, but he will be the Antichrist. He will be the last and the culmination of all the false christs who have ever appeared in history. This is, we might say, the falsification of the title itself.
Here Saint Cyril says, “Others will say the same in our time, or even after us.” After us, too, there will be other heretics of this kind. Do you know how many people run after such men? If people did not follow them, they would gain no hold. But because people do follow them, they succeed. Therefore, my dear friends, many false christs truly exist in our own age, and we must be exceptionally careful. The second sign is this: “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars.” You are going, He says, to hear of wars.
Some will be close to you, while the rumors of wars will concern places farther away. For example, we hear that war is taking place in the Far East. That is a report—a rumor of war. It is one thing to hear warfare nearby and another to hear a report of war. It refers, you might say, to what is near and what is far; I will not dwell on it. And the Lord Himself says this in Matthew 24:6. Saint Cyril comments on it—and pay attention to his commentary: “Is there now a war between the Persians and the Romans in Mesopotamia, or is there not?”
“Does nation rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, or not?” This is beautiful; it is remarkable. Saint Cyril says: I ask you, tell me, is there now a war in Mesopotamia—in the middle of the fourth century—between the Persians and the Romans? Tell me, is there a war? Does nation rise against nation? Are there rumors of wars? This nation against that nation, and that nation against another—do you hear these things, yes or no? His listeners could certainly have answered, “Yes, indeed.”
“It has already happened,” he says. I am omitting a short phrase here because I shall return to it. “There will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” I shall comment on this separately. “These things have already happened.” They have already happened. Now I ask you: if anyone here is a historian—I am not—and if any of you studies history and always has it fresh before him, I challenge him to tell me who exactly was fighting in the middle of the fourth century. Even if Paparrigopoulos were here, my dear friends, he would not find it easy to answer us.
For among the countless wars that took place, this one would have been a mere footnote, unworthy of remembrance or mention. And yet Saint Cyril says that what Christ foretold had already been fulfilled. Was he mistaken? Both no and yes. I want you to pay attention to this, because it presents a remarkable parallel with our own age, when we say, “You see? A Third World War is going to happen, and when it does, the end will come.”
“You see! You see how many false christs there are? The end has come.” So, then, you understand that the situations are parallel.
Saint Cyril, like all the saints of our Church, as I told you earlier, always had the Last Things—the eschata—before him, within his field of vision. Naturally, they interpreted whatever was happening around them and waited expectantly. But they did not fall into what we have fallen into lately over the number 666. As one Metropolitan, the Metropolitan of Piraeus, very rightly wrote—and it is true—whenever there is a sermon about the Antichrist, the crowd is large. Whenever there is a sermon about Christ, the audience thins out.
Really now! I am afraid that the church is full because I told you we would speak about the Antichrist. But I have put you to a test: I am speaking about him only little by little. Yet this is not right; it is not right. Now listen, my dear friends. How are we to understand whether these wars, diseases, and famines can be signs of the end? In Greek, limoi with an iota means famines, while loimoi with omicron-iota means diseases. Someone might ask—not Saint Cyril now, but Christ Himself—“Have there not always been wars? Have there not always been famines and diseases?” What shall we answer? And can we say that these things may constitute the final signs? They are simply signs of the Last Things, but...
they are not the last signs. Do not tell me that I am playing with words. The signs of the Last Things are one thing; the last signs are another. The signs of the Last Things are signs belonging to the age in which the eschata are always with us. The Last Things begin from the time the Gospel and the epistles of the Apostles were written—or, more precisely, from the moment the Lord ascended into Heaven. If you prefer, the Last Things begin after Pentecost. Therefore, these are signs of the Last Things, but they are not the last signs. What is the difference? The last signs are those that will occur when we have reached the very end itself.
Wars will always take place. Then what is so extraordinary about the Lord telling us that they are a sign? That is not what it means. The question, then, is how we should understand these matters. You know, I once explained this when we were interpreting the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation. How are we to interpret these things? The Apocalypse uses the same pattern. There are three series of seven plagues: the seals being opened, the trumpets, and then the bowls, and so forth. Each time one series of seven unfolds, we are given a cluster of plagues. That series ends, and we move on to the next. We asked then: how are we to interpret this?
As a historical sequence? Are we to say that the first series of seven ended chronologically so that the second could begin, and then the second ended and the third began, so that all three series form one straight chronological line? No. Then how should we understand them? The first series of seven contains everything that will happen from Christ's first appearance until His Second Coming. The second series, which contains more powerful events, repeats the same themes in a more concentrated form. The third series repeats the first with even greater intensity than both the first and the second. In other words, the same things recur: wars, diseases, and so forth.
As we move toward the Last Things, these events become more concentrated in both quantity and quality: they become more frequent and more intense. Wars, for example, have always taken place. Here it says, “Nation will rise against nation.” But the “nation against nation” mentioned by Saint Cyril pales in comparison with the First World War, the Second World War, or a possible Third World War. It pales by comparison. What do we have, then? Repetition and intensification—repetition and intensification, both quantitative and qualitative. Pay attention to that.
Now we can understand it very well. When I speak later about diseases and famines, you will understand it even better. We do not, then, have a straight-line movement. We should not tie these three series of seven together like one long rope. In other words, we do not have what we might call a linear expression of history. What do we have instead? A circular movement—or, more precisely, repetition. Pay attention. I begin at one point. I place my finger here and trace a circle. The first circle, the first series of seven, is now complete. Am I to repeat the second circle on exactly the same level? If I repeat it on the same level, I will have the same quantity, the same quality, and the same time. No.
I begin again from this point and complete the circle, but at the same time I rise upward. If I look down from above, the point where I began appears to coincide with the earlier point. It coincides visually, but not chronologically, because I have now moved farther on. I complete a second circle, higher than the first, and then do the same with a third circle, as though I had a spring. You know what a spring looks like. This is what we would call a spiral. What does that mean? We might portray it a little differently: the first circle is small; the second begins above the first but widens out.
The third widens still further. In this way, if we wished to represent it graphically, we could show the increase in both quantity and quality. So we have the same events, but in greater concentration, quantitatively and qualitatively. That is how it is, and we should not be scandalized and say, “But these were ordinary events.” Will there not be a culmination? Yes, the culmination will be a dreadful disorder throughout humanity. To help you understand what I have said—and this repeats what we said earlier when discussing how to interpret the Apocalypse—I now turn to another saying of the Lord that Saint Cyril mentions rather than comments upon, so that you may see it more clearly.
“There will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” Have there not always been famines, diseases, and earthquakes? Of course there have. I shall take the word pestilence—the Greek loimos, spelled with omicron-iota. Plagues and outbreaks of cholera have certainly swept through humanity—terrible epidemics that devastated whole regions. My dear friends, Thessaly itself was once left desolate. Larissa was once laid waste by what appears to have been an outbreak of cholera here—a deadly plague! My dear friends, those epidemics had a certain geographical reach. Today cancer is worldwide—or, better, take AIDS.
I heard that by the year 2000...
Statistically speaking, in proportion to the population, there will be one hundred million people with AIDS by the year 2000. Nothing on such a scale occurred in the past. What, then, do we have? A pestilence, a disease, like the diseases of old that also spread widely. But what do we have now? A change in both quantity and intensity. It is widespread and terrible. This is what I wanted to emphasize, so that we may understand what the Word of God says. And so I continued: “These things,” he says, “have already happened.” Yes—not simply that they happened, but that they are happening. They are happening continually. You may ask, “Is he mistaken?” No.
He says, “They have happened,” because Saint Cyril was not confined to the present moment in his vision; he saw the end before him, and that is why he said, “They have happened.” Yet he did not know when the end would be—and he is not to be blamed for that. For what did the Lord say? No one knows. Not even the Apostle Paul. Consider the Apostle Paul’s wording. Does he not say, “We who remain,” we who are still alive, shall be caught up into the air without dying and shall be changed? Why does he include himself? Not only because he was speaking while still alive and would naturally include himself, but also because, for a moment, he might have thought, “It could happen in my lifetime.” And yet the Apostle Paul also reassures the Thessalonians: “Unless the Apostasy comes first, and then the Antichrist, Christ will not come.”
So, first the Apostasy, then the Antichrist, and afterward Christ—His Second Coming. “There will also be terrors from heaven and great storms.” “Watch therefore,” He says, “for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” What are these terrors from heaven? These terrors from heaven, my dear ones—a terror means something that causes fear—are frightening phenomena. But what exactly are these terrors, these heavenly terrors?
They are... they are astronomical phenomena. Though I use that term loosely, if you will allow me—loosely. It is not strictly accurate, but I use the term in a broad sense.
Airplanes dropping bombs also come from the sky. Shells, missiles, torpedoes, or whatever else may come down upon a city are also terrors from heaven. They truly are terrors. Yet here, although this possibility is not excluded, as you will see, the phrase refers chiefly to changes in the world of the stars. For when it says, “The sun will be darkened, and the moon,” we are dealing with celestial phenomena. Thus, these terrors from heaven concern the celestial world. And what are these “great storms”? As you know, the Greek word cheimon means severe weather.
As for winters, sometimes we have a harsh winter and sometimes a mild one. This year we had some frosts and a somewhat harsh winter. The year before last, we had a very pleasant winter. Next year we may again have a very pleasant, mild, gentle winter. But that is not what this means. The “great storms” are changes in the climate. This is very important. And do not imagine that cheimon always means bad winter weather. The verb cheimazomai does not necessarily imply winter, with rain and snow; it means that I am undergoing hardship, that I am being sorely tried. Therefore, from an ecological perspective, it is said that the earth’s climate has changed or will change, because we have...
the release of substances into the atmosphere—such a vast quantity of substances that these emissions have been judged sufficient to alter the climate. It is therefore said that the earth’s climate will change. Of course, as you know, it changes every ten thousand years; this is the cycle of the so-called ice ages. But here we are now facing a violent change in the climate, which means that the polar regions will begin to grow warmer. This is what ecology tells us. And as the poles grow warmer, their ice will begin to melt, and flooding will follow.
This will create a great many problems across the surface of the earth. And these problems will bring nothing but hardship upon people. In other words, people will be sorely tried. So cheimazomai does not always refer to winter; it means to suffer hardship—hardship caused by climate change. Climatic extremes, whether extreme cold or extreme heat, will plainly bring suffering. In any case, however things unfold, there will be changes. “Watch therefore,” says the Lord, “for you do not know on what day the Lord”—our Lord—
“on what day your Lord is coming.” Saint Cyril says this—forgive me, the Lord Himself said it as well. And now we come to the seventh paragraph: “But we seek a sign of the Second Coming that concerns us; as members of the Church, we seek a sign concerning the Church.” We who belong to the Church—for that is what “ecclesiastical” means, someone belonging to the Church—we seek a sign that concerns the Church. This is the sign we seek. Can the Lord give it to us? “And the Savior says...” The Lord speaks to us. Yes, He gives us such a sign.
It should trouble us deeply. It is a sorrowful symptom. For, my dear ones, even if famines and diseases descend upon us, even if a thousand Antichrists come, what has the Church to fear so long as she preserves her unity? She will bear witness through martyrdom. The Church has always known martyrdom. It will happen; they will kill us, and that will be the end of the matter. We shall depart from this present life and go to the Kingdom of God. What have we to fear? But when signs of corruption, decline, and disintegration appear within the Church, that is exceedingly serious, and the Lord emphasized it to us. Listen to it. This, above all, should trouble us.
Then. When is “then”? When we have reached the Last Things (eschata). But what are the Last Things? We have already said: once again I trace with my finger and my hand that spiral line. “Then many will be scandalized, and they will betray one another and hate one another.” “If you hear that bishops rise against bishops, clergy against clergy, and peoples against peoples, even to the shedding of blood, do not be troubled. It has been written.” Let us see, then. At that time many will be scandalized, and in hatred they will hand one another over
to the rulers and authorities. And what will cause them to be scandalized? It is the great scandal surrounding the person of Jesus Christ. My dear ones, this sign is the most central of all. Throughout the centuries, people will ask, “Who is Jesus Christ?” The Lord posed the question, because it begins in His own time: “Who do people say that I, the Son of Man, am?” And a time will come when they will ask, “Who is Jesus Christ? Is He said to be God? Is He a philosopher? A sociologist? A great man?” Or, according to Kazantzakis and those impious writers, merely a lover consumed by passion.

Κάποιος θα νομίσει, και πολύ δικαιολογημένα, ότι εάν το τέλος δεν είναι γνωστόν, εάν ο Κύριος σαφώς τους είπε ότι δεν το γνωρίζουν ούτε θα το γνωρίσουν και ότι αυτό είναι μόνο στη γνώση του Θεού και δεν είναι δική τους δουλειά να σκαλίζουν πράγματα τα οποία ανήκουν στη γνώση του Θεού, άρα λοιπόν το τέλος είναι άγνωστο. Η ημέρα και η ώρα της Δευτέρας του Κυρίου Παρουσίας είναι άγνωστος. Δεν έρχεται σε αντίφαση όταν τώρα ο Κύριος θα τους μιλήσει για σημάδια; Διότι, ένα παράδειγμα: να πούμε, πότε μπορεί να ξημερώνει όταν δεν έχουμε ρολόι;
του αγνώστου της Δευτέρας Παρουσίας και των σημείων. Δεν είναι αντιφατικό. Και δεν είναι αντιφατικό, αλλά και δεν είναι ημαρτημένο να ασχοληθούμε με τα σημεία. Διότι, εάν απαγορεύεται να ασχοληθούμε, σαν μια πολυπραγμοσύνη, ασεβής πολυπραγμοσύνη, περί της Δευτέρας του Χριστού Παρουσίας, πότε θα γίνει;
Ο Θεός βεβαίως έδωσε τις δέκα εντολές. Ήταν η απορία ενός καθηγητού της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης, ότι πώς σπουδαία πρόσωπα της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης αμαρτάνουν και μάλιστα σοβαρά. Να, ο Δαβίδ ημάρτησε και το καταπληκτικό είναι ότι, αφού ημάρτησε με τη Βηρσαβεέ, δεν την αφήνει. Θα μου πείτε, βέβαια ο άντρας της πέθανε ή, καλύτερα, σκοτώθηκε. Σκοτώθηκε γιατί έτσι το έφτιαξε ο Δαβίδ να σκοτωθεί. Άσχημο πράγμα. Το πρώτο παιδί γεννιέται αλλά πεθαίνει. Το δεύτερο παιδί είναι ο Σολομών. Πώς δέχεται ο Θεός τον Σολομώντα και να γίνει τελικά η Βηρσαβεέ γυναίκα του Δαβίδ;
Κάποια εποχή. Τώρα αυτός είναι ο Μεσσίας. Ακούτε;
Πάντοτε θα γίνονται πόλεμοι. Τότε ποιο είναι το εκπληκτικό που ο Κύριος μάς λέγει ότι είναι σημείο; Δεν σημαίνει αυτό. Λοιπόν, είναι θέμα πώς θα δούμε τα θέματα αυτά. Ξέρετε, αυτό έλεγα κάποτε όταν είχαμε ερμηνεύσει το βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως. Πώς θα ερμηνεύσουμε αυτά; Διότι το ίδιο πράγμα χρησιμοποιεί και η Αποκάλυψη. Οι τρεις επτάδες των πληγών, οι σφραγίδες που ανοίγουν, οι σάλπιγγες και τα λοιπά, οι φιάλες, αυτά κάθε φορά που ανοίγουν, η μία επτάδα ανοίγει, έχουμε μία δέσμη πληγών. Τελειώνει αυτή και πάμε παρακάτω. Είχαμε πει τότε: πώς θα ερμηνεύσουμε;
Λοιπόν, η Αποστασία, μετά ο Αντίχριστος, μετά ο Χριστός. Η Δευτέρα Του Παρουσία. «Φόβητρά τε απ’ ουρανού και μεγάλοι χειμώνες». «Γρηγορείτε ούν», φησίν, «ότι ουκ οίδατε ποία ημέρα ο Κύριος υμών έρχεται». Ποια είναι αυτά τα φόβητρα από τον ουρανό; Αυτά τα φόβητρα από τον ουρανό, αγαπητοί μου —φόβητρον θα πει κάτι που φοβίζει— θα πει φαινόμενα που εκφοβίζουν. Τώρα, τι είναι αυτά τα φόβητρα, τα ουράνια φόβητρα;
Με...
