Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets the heavens’ perishing in Psalm 101 not as annihilation but as their transformation, like an old garment being changed. Because God created everything from nothing, He could return it to nothing, yet Scripture teaches that He will instead renew His creation in the palingenesia. Believers must neither speculate recklessly about the timing and identity of the Antichrist nor become spiritually complacent, but remain discerning and watchful.

In the fifteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, paragraph three, he says that we shall have a new world, and that this will take place when history comes to an end. Saint Cyril then continues speaking on this subject. Having referred to the Prophet Isaiah and to the Gospel, he offers yet another testimony—and, as I told you, there are very many such testimonies in Holy Scripture, in both the Old and New Testaments.
This testimony is found in the Psalter. He says: “Listen to David the Prophet, who says: ‘In the beginning, O Lord, You founded the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands. They shall perish, but You remain.’” What is David saying?
In Psalm 101: “In the beginning, O Lord, You founded the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands. They shall perish, but You remain.” But someone will object: “You see? It clearly says that they shall perish.” What does the Psalmist say? That the heavens will perish. How, then, can you say here that they will be renewed? Listen to what he means by “they shall perish.” Pay attention to how the Psalmist understands these words. He makes it clear in what follows: “They shall all grow old like a garment; You shall roll them up like a cloak, and they shall be changed.” All things, all the heavens... well...
They will grow old like a garment—not that they have already grown old, but that they will grow old. And like a cloak, like an overcoat that we turn inside out, “You shall roll them up.” This comes from the verb meaning “to roll” or “to turn around,” as I told you last time: to turn something inside out. And the heavens “shall be changed.” He then gives another example to explain the words “they shall perish”: “For a man is also said to perish, according to the saying, ‘Behold, the righteous man has perished, and no one takes it to heart.’ Yet his resurrection is awaited. In the same way, we also await the resurrection of the heavens.” This is from Isaiah. What does it mean?
It says, “The righteous man has perished,” but no one understands “has perished”—that the righteous man has been lost—to mean annihilation. How, then, is it understood? His resurrection is awaited. He has departed from this present life, but he will rise again. This is how we must understand the verb used here, “they shall perish,” when the Psalmist says that the heavens will perish. The verb does not mean that they will be annihilated, but that they will be changed.
Therefore, my beloved, we see here that everything will change because everything will have grown old. This aging, of course, is not what we would understand scientifically as the exhaustion of energy. You know how the aging of the universe is understood from the standpoint of physics. We cannot ordinarily sense that something has grown old. We say that the earth is continually renewed. How is it renewed? Look at the plants and at everything around us. Autumn comes and everything dies; then in spring we have the same thing again. There is a cycle and, pay attention, both cycling and renewal. But this cycle is not eternal.
How can this aging be understood or perceived? It occurs when all the energy in the universe has reached the same level. There is no disappearance: energy remains energy, but it can no longer perform work. Matter remains matter, yet everything becomes static. A wonderful example, which I also gave you last time, is the sea. Imagine that the whole mass of water in the Thermaic Gulf were up on the summit of Mount Olympus. We could run, at no cost...
Factory after factory. We could obtain an enormous amount of energy. But the sea is not on Mount Olympus; it is where it is, and its energy is all at the same level. Every point of energy is at the same level. There is no difference in potential. If I wanted to obtain that energy, I would have to pump the water up to Mount Olympus; and when it flowed back down, I would, of course, recover less energy than I had spent. This is well known, because otherwise we would have perpetual motion. So, how is the aging of the universe understood? I shall say it once more: all its energy has reached the same level. There is no difference in potential.
There is therefore no difference in level, and the result is a static condition. This is called death: the well-known heat death of the universe. Of course, I told you last time that we shall not wait for the heat death of the universe. The aging spoken of here is not physical but moral. Do not Saint Cyril, the Fathers, and the word of God everywhere tell us that our earth has grown old through sin? The aging here, then, is not physical but moral. Pay attention as we look more closely at this passage, because it is exceedingly beautiful.
It is truly revelatory. I shall say only a few words, because we have so much to discuss. “In the beginning, O Lord, You founded the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands.” What does “in the beginning” mean here? It corresponds to what the Book of Genesis says: “In the beginning God made heaven and earth.” If we were simply to translate, rather than interpret, this little phrase “in the beginning,” we would render it as “at the outset”—that is, in plain language, at the beginning.
At the beginning—but what beginning? When we speak of a beginning, we mean time. And the words “You founded the earth” refer to space. Did time already exist when the earth was founded, that is, when space was created? No. Time did not yet exist. Time is interwoven with space. Neither space without time nor time without space can be conceived. They are intertwined. Do you see the wisdom of the words: “In the beginning, O Lord, You founded the earth”?
This corresponds to “In the beginning God made.” The Psalmist’s “You founded” is the same as “You made.” What took place? “In the beginning God made heaven and earth.” I would need an hour to speak to you about this, but I shall not do so. It is majestic. I shall tell you only this: Who founded it? God. “You founded it.” “In the beginning God made.” God—one God. Is this God, then, the Maker of matter? Yes. It is not some other god, some alien god supposedly hated by the God of the spirits. It is the same God. Is this God...
Nameless—no, forgive me, let me put it better. Is He impersonal? Is nature itself God, as pantheism teaches? No. “In the beginning God made.” In Greek, the definite article shows that this is the particular, personal God. He is a person and is not identical with His creation. Why is He not identical with His creation? Because He “made” it. The text does not say that things “emanated” from Him; it says that He “made” them, which means that creation is not an inward projection of His essence. I may say, “I am making a watch.” This means that the watch does not come from my essence; it is something distinct from me. Creation, therefore, is a projection...
Outside myself, not within myself. It is known that the Son is the inward expression of the Father, whereas creation is an outward work of the Father. What does this mean? There is one God, and God is personal. What He creates lies outside His essence and outside Himself. Therefore, in His essence God remains beyond His creation, though not absent from it. Space and time also came into being together. Does not the Old Testament say, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were established”? By what word? Through the Word (Logos). Who is this Word? He is the second person of the Holy Trinity. And furthermore...
“Through whom He also made the ages.” What are the ages? They are time. Time and space are creations of God, created together, interwoven, and inconceivable apart from one another. Try to conceive of time without space. It is impossible, because time manifests itself only through space. Try, please, to conceive of space without time, or time without space. It is impossible. Here we reach the limits of human thought. I shall continue. These things perish; they pass away. In First Maccabees we find Solomone, that wonderful woman and mother of seven children, speaking to her last child...
In the days of Antiochus Epiphanes, after her other six brave sons had already suffered martyrdom. “My child, take care,” she says. “Do not betray the faith; do not betray our religion.” She says this to her last child because Antiochus Epiphanes is trying to coax him. “And do not forget that God created everything from nothing.” This is said, and it is absolutely true. The greatest truth—one the philosophers never reached—was spoken by a woman, Solomone. Aristotle, by contrast, said, “From nothing, nothing comes.” There is also a corresponding Latin expression. The word nihil, if I remember correctly, means “nothing.”
“From nothing, nothing.” Yet Solomone now says that the world came from nothing. This can be known only by revelation, because the categories of reason—our logical categories—cannot accept existence arising from nothing; they can only say, “From nothing, nothing comes.” Now, when Scripture says that the heavens shall perish and the universe shall pass away, will it truly cease to exist? Can it be lost and become what? Nothing again? Man has no relationship with nothingness and cannot have one—not practically, not even theoretically. The very concept of nothingness cannot enter...
The human mind. God alone has a relationship with nothingness. For this reason, He can return His creation to nothing. But He does not return it to nothing. What does He do instead? He renews it. He makes it new. The phrase “they shall perish” means that they have grown old, as the passage goes on to say.
“They shall all grow old like a garment.” Thus, “they shall perish” is equivalent to “they shall grow old,” not to “they shall be annihilated.” What, then, do we have here? We have the renewal of creation. My beloved, I told you last time that someone here—a man—said to me that this truth had shaken him profoundly. I do not know...
I believe I also said that these things shake me profoundly. They cannot fail to move us. There is such depth and such beauty in all that God reveals, especially when we know what God is preparing. What philosophical mind has ever conceived of these things? “In the same way,” he says, “just as we await our own resurrection, so we also await the resurrection of the heavens.”
“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood,” as Joel says. In other words, what we might call the curves of aging will reach a point where they suddenly plunge. Pay attention: whether you speak of thousands or millions of years, that is the lifespan of the universe. A conference was recently held in America; perhaps you saw it mentioned in a magazine. Only one person from Greece represented our scientific community, a nuclear scientist named Frangos. At this very high-level conference, it was accepted that creation...
...is not millions of years old, as the materialists would have it. It is not millions of years old; the age of the universe is very young. That is the first point. Second, the age of humanity does not exceed twenty thousand years. Remember these things; they are crucial. They are a stone cast against materialism. Do not speak to me of radiocarbon dating. Do not. These are the latest findings, based precisely on observations made within creation itself. And now I return to the subject. The curve will plunge: the sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood. You see, these things will happen suddenly.
The Antichrist will reign for three and a half years. This will happen only at the very end of those three and a half years. It will not merely be a short time; it will be extremely short. Whether it is one day, one week, or one month, in any case it will be an exceedingly brief period, incomparably shorter than the three and a half years. Much shorter. Thus, if the course of the universe is like a curve, it will suddenly plunge, revealing the aging of the universe. Suddenly. “Let those who have converted from the Manichaeans be instructed, and let them no longer deify the heavenly lights.”
“Nor let them impiously suppose that this sun, which is destined to be darkened, is Christ.” Let those who have converted from the ranks of the Manichaeans be instructed, he says. The Manichaeans were Gnostics, you see, so that they may no longer believe in and deify the heavenly lights—the sun and the moon—or claim that Christ is the sun.
They are impious in thinking this way. I would like to dwell on this for a couple of minutes. Mani conceived the idea of uniting all the religions of his age into a single religion. He was the first to attempt such a union of East and West on the religious and philosophical level. He sought to combine Judaism, Christianity—for Mani lived after Christ—paganism, the Persian religion, and Buddhism. He was the first to do this. Persia, after all, was not very far from India. He therefore wanted to unite East and West.
He was the first to create this kind of religious syncretism and religious ecumenism. Mani, therefore, is the model, the father, of every later form of religious syncretism. Do you know who is attempting this religious syncretism in our own age? Many people. Many, many—as I have told you—including Ecumenism, that pan-heresy, and also Freemasonry. Freemasonry is nothing but religious syncretism, since its teachings incorporate the ancient mysteries of the Greeks, the peoples of Asia Minor, and the Egyptians. It also includes Christianity; Freemasons swear upon the Bible.
Freemasons swear upon the Bible, upon Holy Scripture. That is strange. It also includes Buddhism. We might say that the metaphysical system, or the soul, of Freemasonry is Theosophy. And Theosophy is exactly what I have been describing to you: a collection of everything.
In other words, Mani is the model for Freemasonry, and he taught that Christ is the sun. This is not accidental, because Freemasonry is a continuation of ancient Manichaeism, gathering still more elements—whatever it encountered along the way. But the method is the same: collecting everything together. Let me mention just one example, which you already know. Because of certain incidents involving the Masonic Lodge in Athens, several things came to light. Just as we have the sanctuary, they too have a main central aisle, and on the eastern wall there are two figures: the sun and the moon. And the god of Freemasonry is the G.A.O.T.U.—initials for the phrase “the Great Architect of the Universe.” Who does the architecting? Who is the architect? This is pantheism. Who is the architect? The sun, because it is the sun that gives life; therefore, according to them, the sun is Christ.
You may say, “For God’s sake!” Yes, yes. Perhaps some Freemason listening here at this moment will stand up and say, “Father, you are distorting these things.” Not at all. This is the reality. Why is the G.A.O.T.U. the sun? And why are the sun and moon displayed there? We have Christ; we do not have the sun. We say metaphorically that “Christ is the Sun of Righteousness.” Christ is not the physical sun. There is an immense difference between the two. That belief is nature worship. So you understand what Saint Cyril is saying here: those who convert from the Manichaeans must recognize that the sun is a created thing, that it will be extinguished, and that they cannot deify it.
We too could say to the poor Freemasons, “The sun you believe to be God is a created thing and will perish”—that is, it will be extinguished. Christ is the Savior of the universe and of humanity, not created things.
Again, hear the Lord saying, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” Do you see? Christ says this in Matthew 24:35. Created works are not equal in worth to the Master’s words, because God’s words are immortal—I would almost say uncreated. It was only when God became man that His spoken words were recorded and became created. The Word (Logos) of God is uncreated. The spoken words are created, but the Word (Logos) of God is uncreated. You cannot place created works—that is, created things—beside His words and make them equal.
Created things pass away, but “My words never pass away; they remain,” says the Lord.
Since Saint Cyril refers here to the Lord, who Himself foretells and declares this, you may ask whether Holy Scripture, or specifically the New Testament, states it anywhere more clearly. And not merely through the interpretation of the Apostles, because some people would object, “Ah, no, it is the Apostles who say that.” Christ Himself says it. Such people, very foolishly and impiously, separate the teaching of the Apostles from the teaching of Christ. But the Lord said it. Listen to how He said it. This is Matthew 19:27. The Apostle Peter says, “Behold, we have left everything—our possessions and our homes—and followed You. What then shall we have?”
What will become of us? We followed You; what will become of us? Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits upon the throne of His glory, you also will sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” There is one word here: palingenesia, regeneration. What does palingenesia mean? Incidentally, the word palingenesia does not appear in the dictionaries. This struck me as very strange. I mention it for those of you who do research: it is found neither in Dimitrakos’s great nine-volume dictionary of the Greek language nor in the Liddell and Scott lexicon.
I was surprised that the word palingenesia does not appear in these dictionaries. The concordance gives the corresponding Latin word, a very apt rendering—the term used when the New Testament is translated into Latin, as in the Vulgate.
Regeneratio—regeneration. It means to generate again, to bring forth anew. More precisely, the English word “generation” does not simply mean giving birth; it can also mean bringing something into being. Therefore, “regeneration” means “to create anew.” Indeed, Zigabenos explains it as “life again”—something coming to life once more.
But this does not refer merely to a human being living again in his human nature and human body. Consider the word genesis. What is the first book of Holy Scripture called? It is called Genesis. In Greek, it is written with a single nu. It does not come from the verb meaning “to beget,” but from the verb meaning “to come into being,” to be created. Thus palingenesia means a second Genesis, a renewed creation. The word is not unfamiliar to us; it is also used in modern Greek. We speak of national palingenesia, meaning that we become new again, that we come to life once more. Thank you.
My beloved, when the Lord speaks of the palingenesia, He means creation anew, just as the Book of Genesis concerns creation. That is why the first book of Holy Scripture received the name Genesis, not “Gennesis,” meaning birth, but “Genesis.” Thus the Lord also promised that, when the palingenesia—the regeneration of creation—takes place, then you too will sit upon twelve thrones, and so forth. Paragraph four: “The things that are seen pass away, and the things that are awaited come—and they are better than the former things.”
This is the conclusion of what Saint Cyril said in the preceding paragraph, and the conclusion of what we too discussed last time and today. Therefore, the things that are visible pass away, while the things we await—and which are better than the former things—are coming. This world is passing away. How did the Apostle Paul express it? “The form of this world is passing away.” Its form, not its essence. “But let no one pry into the appointed times, for it is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set by His own authority.”
No one should busy himself prying into when these things will happen, because, as the Lord said, this belongs solely to God’s authority; therefore, we must not speculate about it. This goes back to what the disciples asked the Lord shortly before the Ascension: “Lord, when will You restore the kingdom to Israel?” This kingdom has two levels of meaning. The first is the plain meaning of the phrase: that the Jews would be liberated, become a nation again, and be a free state. Behind this lies another level: the Church, the Kingdom of God upon the earth. And would you like a still deeper level? It is everything we have been discussing—the whole renewal of creation. It was precisely in response to this that the Lord said, “It is not for you to pry into these things.” It is not your concern. So I would say to those who claim that the Antichrist has already been born: since the Antichrist, my beloved, is connected with the end of the world, how can they claim such a thing? As we shall see, the Antichrist will not bear signs declaring, “I am the Antichrist.” In fact, he will display the very opposite of what anyone might imagine. He will appear to be a wonderful man.
An outstanding ruler. Who would ever suspect him? How, then, can we say that the Antichrist has already been born? I consider this sheer idle talk. Worse still is the claim that the Antichrist is a certain age, that he has already performed certain miracles in Jerusalem, and that he is there now. Unfortunately, this is even more harmful, because it misleads the faithful. When these claims prove false, people will say, “Oh, never mind. Everything else Scripture says must be wrong too.” The devil misleads people, my dear friends, so that they may fall into error. He wants them to reject today’s falsehood and say, “It is all nonsense,” so that tomorrow they will reject the genuine thing as well. When the Antichrist truly appears, they will say, “This is not the Antichrist.” That is where the danger lies. But Saint Cyril says something splendid, something I would call an unforgettable maxim: “Do not dare to pronounce when these things will happen, but neither lie back and fall asleep.” That is it. I would call it a classic formulation. Do not dare, he says, to make pronouncements. Do not dare to declare when these things will happen. Do not say, “Here it is,” or, “There it is.”
Do not dare. But on the other hand, do not lie flat on your back, snoring and saying, “Oh, we have plenty of time.” Neither one nor the other. I think the answer Saint Cyril gives here is wonderful. If you ask me when we shall speak about the Antichrist—well, we are beginning now. You see, we are getting there little by little. Little by little. Do not be impatient. So pay attention: we must neither pry into these matters nor lie asleep on our backs. On this point, let me make a brief observation.
You have heard speakers or read books—and I will not name either the speakers or the books—which say that the Antichrist is coming, that he has already been born, and that the number 666 has no significance whatsoever. Do you hear that? They say 666 has no significance at all; that so long as I do not accept it in my heart, it does not matter if it is something external, even if they put the seal on my hand.
Certainly, certainly, a person must understand that his whole faith rests upon his free choice. But Scripture clearly says that 666 will be placed on the hand as a seal.
It speaks realistically, clearly—very clearly. This means that I will say neither that I am lost because a banknote or an identity card bears 666, nor that 666 has no significance. Some say, “The number 666 means nothing; dismiss it.” Others say, “It is of the utmost significance and must not appear anywhere.” These are two extremes. This runs parallel to what Saint Cyril says here. He is not speaking about the same thing, but the spirit is the same.
My dear friends, if the Philippine 5,000 banknote bears 666—and you know that it does, do you not? You know it very well—that banknote is in my wallet. A banknote is a public document. It bears a signature guaranteeing payment upon presentation. Older banknotes used to say “payable,” meaning that the stated value was payable upon presentation. In other words, when you present that signed document, you receive its stated value. What is it, then? It is a public document. I do not issue it as a private individual. It is issued by the Bank of Greece, the bank of issue. It is therefore a public document.
The same may possibly be true of an identity card. If I have the pink five-thousand-drachma note here in my pocket, in my wallet, has it entered my heart? Has it been placed on my hand? No. What if it appears on the identity card? No. So it has no significance. Yet it does have significance. Here we must avoid both extremes. Its presence there does not mean that I have received the seal. Only when you try to put it on my hand will I say no, because Holy Scripture says so clearly. Therefore, it does not have that meaning when it appears on an identity card, a banknote, or merchandise. Buy whatever you wish. All food products have barcodes printed on them.
They all have them. Am I not going to eat those foods? That would be foolish.
And we might recall, my dear friends, that when people approached the Lord, they asked Him, “Must we pay tax to Caesar?” He said, “Show Me a coin, a denarius. Whose inscription and image are these?” The image, you see—the inscription and the image. “Caesar’s,” they replied. “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Pay close attention to this point. Here is God, and here is Caesar—whichever Caesar happens to rule the state. What I owe to God is one thing, and what I owe here, to the state, is another. I owe taxes to the state. But here...
This gesture of the Lord may perhaps have been preserved especially for our own days. It was an answer for His own time, but I think it was also preserved for ours, for the following reason. As you know, when the Apocalypse was written, the emperors of Rome were regarded as antichrists. We might say that each Roman emperor was a forerunner and personification of that condition—that is, of the Antichrist. And Babylon is the symbol of that city which destroys the Saints.
Historical Babylon no longer existed. It had been destroyed many centuries before. What, then, is this Babylon? It is Rome. For obvious reasons, John the Evangelist does not write “Rome”; he writes “Babylon.” But Rome is what he means. Does he mean Rome simply as a city? At that time, yes—but also as a symbol. Babylon is not the ancient Babylon—and recognizing this helps us understand the two meanings together—for ancient Babylon had already disappeared from the stage of history. Babylon is the Western civilization that produced apostasy from God. That is Babylon.
Western civilization is that atheistic civilization which produced apostasy from God through its philosophy, its technology, its science, and its whole way of thinking. This is Babylon, the great city that committed fornication and led humanity into fornication. Today, however, Western civilization is no longer a geographical matter, but a matter of mentality, because today Western civilization encompasses the whole world. Japan too is part of Western civilization. Do you see?
Western civilization from one end of the earth to the other: Japan, the whole world, the entire globe. Who, then, is this great harlot, Babylon? It is the Apostasy. It is Western civilization, which produced the Apostasy. Thus, the successive emperors of Rome were personifications of the Antichrist. Are we to suppose that John the Evangelist invented all these things in the Apocalypse and that Jesus Christ knew nothing of them? What a strange idea! When Christ said, “Show Me the coin,” and asked, “Whose image and inscription are these?” they answered, “Caesar’s.” If Caesar truly was—if he truly was...
an antichrist from whom Christ should have recoiled, so to speak, or whom He should have made the people fear, He would have told them, “Never touch this coin again. Throw it away.” But He said no such thing. Instead, He said something tremendous: “Render to God whatever belongs to God, and render to Caesar whatever belongs to Caesar.” Every other public document, such as an identity card, as well as whatever appears on products, banknotes, and so forth, belongs to Caesar. None of these things can harm me. What, then, can harm me? If they tell me to have it placed on my hand—and today we know it can be inscribed with laser beams—
will I accept it? No. Why? Because here the Word of God speaks with absolute precision and warns me: not on my hand. I shall say more about that later. But pay attention: I told you that it would not in itself harm us if the number appeared on an identity card or on banknotes. Even so, let me tell you of a personal aversion I have. Those five-hundred-drachma notes that depicted the Ouroboros—the serpent devouring its own tail—and bore three or four Masonic symbols: whenever I happen to have such notes in my wallet, I get rid of them. I assure you, I feel—not that their presence in my wallet is a profanation; no, it is not a profanation—but I feel an aversion to them.
I find those banknotes repulsive. It is simply an aversion. Of course, I do not throw them away or anything of the sort. I spend them; they pass on and leave my wallet. Yet I also told you that, despite all this, we must not allow the number 666 to be placed on identity cards or on other things. But if it does not harm me, why not? There is a “but” here. What is it? This is what I want you to notice. We must embrace neither the extreme which says, “It is nothing,” nor the other extreme, which regards a person as already having received the seal simply because he accepts an identity card bearing 666. Neither one nor the other. What, then, is the issue? It is that if a beginning is made...
and we put 666 on our identity cards, we shall become accustomed to it, and the later steps will no longer make an impression on us. What is the next step? I do not know how many steps there may be, but the final step is the placing of the seal on the hand. Let me explain.
From time to time you receive a dollar from America, as we sometimes do. You, like everyone else, conduct transactions with banknotes—with dollars and German marks. Take a dollar and tell me, please: today we speak of the disease AIDS, and people say that it can even be transmitted through saliva.
Suppose, then, that someone with AIDS moistened a banknote with his saliva. Many people have the habit of licking a finger before counting banknotes. My dear friends, we must never do this. It is dreadful, and it is dangerous with every illness, not only this one. We may transmit germs to others and pick them up ourselves. No. We should count the money with our hands and then go and wash them. We must not moisten a finger with saliva, then, once the banknotes have rubbed it dry, put it back into our mouth and continue doing the same thing. It is dreadful. We must not do this. But because this habit exists, let us suppose that the dollar carries infection—I mention the dollar because AIDS is supposedly more prevalent in America at present—
could it not also be present on Greek banknotes? And since the disease has reached Greece as well, why should I say that it cannot be? We shall begin to feel endangered. One day they will say, “You see? We cannot handle banknotes. It is very dangerous to touch them. We do not need them. We must find another way that does not require the use of banknotes.” What way is that? We shall put 666 here, together with each person’s individual number, because there are two numbers—do not forget that. There is a general number and an individual one. The general number is 666, and the individual number is one’s registration number, like a tax identification number. Yes, something like that.
And banknotes are also stolen. So this is another reason—not only disease and AIDS—for finding a way to keep our money secure. People steal; they break in... What is happening today? So many murders and robberies! You go to the bank to collect something, perhaps your pension, and just as you are leaving, someone snatches it and runs away. Such things will become very common, until one day people will say, “To put an end to all this, there will be no more banknotes. That is the end of it. We will use the mark.” But by then, if we have already learned to have 666 marked on our identity cards, if we have grown accustomed to seeing 666 everywhere, then when the time comes, very gently and naturally...
we will not say no when they want to put it on our hand. Then our Christians will be marked; an indelible mark will be placed here. This is why we must not accept 666 on identity cards: at the very least, the Greek people will become accustomed to it and will say, “It is nothing.” Yet 666 in itself can do nothing to me. If it is on a banknote or on an identity card, as I have explained, it can do nothing to me in itself. But it can affect me in this way: it will condition me to accept it as nothing. So I shall say once again what was said here.
He says, “Do not dare to declare when these things will happen, but neither should you lie back and fall asleep.” We must avoid both extremes. And we would say the same. To tell you the truth, I had no intention of speaking about these things tonight. I really did not. I do not know—I was carried along by this passage, because I had been saving these matters for another occasion. But we must avoid both extremes. We must be concerned about both sides of the matter, for all the reasons I have been explaining to you. So, my dear ones, let us be careful on this point. And beyond that, I do not know—may God have mercy. All these things are certainly not good signs for our age. Nevertheless, they are signs... Thank you.
But let us remain watchful. As for what will happen afterward, may God help us. Since this discussion has arisen, I would also like to address something else that has been said: “Even if I have the number, the seal, here on my hand, can I not still make the sign of the Cross? Of course I can. I am not denying Jesus Christ.” Yet when we read the Apocalypse, it is striking that those who have received the seal will not be able to repent—or rather, no, they will not be saved. That is, if I receive the seal, I will not be saved. This is striking. Between “I receive the seal” and “I will not be saved”...
there is a whole sequence of events. You have heard what they are. At first glance, someone might say, “But I did not know. I did not know.” Of course, I do not know how God will judge. But on the basis of Holy Scripture, this is what we must say: whoever receives the seal will not be saved. This is stated explicitly and categorically. And that the seal will be placed on the hand—specifically the right hand—and on the forehead is exactly what the text says. It is neither metaphor nor allegory. It is precisely what the text says. That settles it; there is no room for anything else. So what is happening here? Tell me: what is Baptism? It is a seal. How is this seal given?
The person is placed in the baptismal font and immersed and raised up three times, while I say, “The servant of God is baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” What have I done here? I have set a seal. What is this seal? It has a twofold character: the name of God, confessing that God is Trinitarian—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—and the other aspect of the seal, the Cross. For the threefold immersion and rising, which also expresses the name of the Trinitarian God, is at the same time the Cross. For as the Apostle Paul says, all of us who were baptized...
into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death. What does this mean? The immersion is the tomb. That is why one goes down beneath the water, while the rising from it is the Resurrection. What are we confessing here? Two seals are set—or rather, one seal with two characteristics: faith in the dogma of the Holy Trinity, the first and greatest dogma of our faith, and the dogma of the Incarnation, because when we speak of the Cross, we mean the Incarnation. Together these constitute the seal—the seal of the believer, received at Baptism. Tell me, please: when you came out of the baptismal font, did you have any visible seal? Nothing anywhere, nothing at all. And yet this seal...
exists. I come out of the baptismal font, and even if some oil or something else has been put on me—I mean oil, not Chrismation—I later wash, and nothing visible remains. Yet the seal exists. It is ontological. It is not a seal made with ink that can be erased. It has entered my very being so indelibly that even when I leave my body in the grave and it turns to dust, this will not be able to erase the seal. For by this seal the Lord will recognize me, so that I may enter His Kingdom. The seal of the Antichrist runs parallel to this, because...
the first seal, Christ’s seal, is the seal of faith. The second seal is the seal of the Antichrist, and it too is a seal of faith: faith that he will give us food, that he will create a better world for us, and the confession that he is the Messiah. The conclusion is this: just as the one being baptized receives the divine uncreated energy of God, so the one who accepts 666 receives the demonic energy of Satan and, consequently, will be unable to repent. It will form a kind of barrier: first, he will be unable to repent; or we might say that it will unseal and annul God’s original seal.
It will be a new, demonic sealing, after which God will no longer accept anything, because this is the sign of the end, the final act of faith. What happened to Lot’s wife, concerning whom the Lord told us, “Remember Lot’s wife”? What happened? She turned to look back and became salt, a pillar of salt. She did not believe, and she became a pillar of salt. The others believed. Believed what? Why? That they must not turn back and look behind them. Yet that seemingly small act would be the final act in her story. So we have the monuments of faith: the seal of God, the Precious Cross, and faith in the Trinitarian God; and the seal of Satan, faith in the Antichrist, which will be...
the final monuments of faith and unbelief—the final monuments of history.

Βρίσκεται η μαρτυρία αυτή εις το Ψαλτήριον. Λέγει: «Άκουε Δαβίδ του προφήτου λέγοντος· Κατ’ αρχάς, συ Κύριε, την γην εθεμελίωσας, και έργα των χειρών σου εισίν οι ουρανοί. Αυτοί απολούνται, συ δε διαμένεις». Τι λέγει ο Δαβίδ;
Εεε...
Ιμάτιο θα παλιώσουν, όχι πάλιωσαν, θα παλιώσουν, και σαν περιβόλαιον, σαν παλτό που το γυρίζουμε μέσα έξω, «ελίξεις αυτούς», δηλαδή του ρήματος «ελίσσω», θα πει περιστρέφω, σας το έλεγα την περασμένη φορά, γυρίζω μέσα έξω, και θα αλλαχθούν, «αλλαγήσονται» οι ουρανοί. Και φέρει κι ακόμα ένα παράδειγμα για το «απολούνται». «Ώσπερ γαρ απώλεια ανθρώπου λέγεται κατά το ειρημένον· ίδετε ως ο δίκαιος απώλετο και ουδείς εκδέχεται τη καρδία. Και ταύτα της αναστάσεως προσδοκωμένης, ούτως ανάστασιν ώσπερ προσδοκώμεν και των ουρανών». Είναι από τον Ησαΐα. Τι είναι;
Δυτικός πολιτισμός, αυτός ο άθεος πολιτισμός που δημιούργησε την αποστασία από τον Θεό με τη φιλοσοφία του, με την τεχνική του, με την επιστήμη του και με τον τρόπον του σκέπτεσθαι. Αυτή είναι η Βαβυλών, η πόλις η μεγάλη, που επόρνευσε, εξεπόρνευσε την ανθρωπότητα. Δυτικός δε πολιτισμός σήμερα δεν είναι πια μια υπόθεση γεωγραφική, αλλά μια υπόθεση νοοτροπίας. Διότι δυτικός πολιτισμός σήμερα είναι ολόκληρη η υφήλιος. Δυτικός πολιτισμός είναι και η Ιαπωνία. Βλέπετε;
υπάρχει μία σειρά από πράγματα. Ακούσατε ποια είναι αυτά. Διότι εκ πρώτης όψεως μπορεί να πει κάποιος: «Μα δεν ήξερα. Δεν ήξερα». Δεν ξέρω, βέβαια, ο Θεός πώς θα κρίνει, αλλά με βάση την Αγία Γραφή αυτά έχουμε να πούμε: ότι εκείνος που σφραγίζεται δεν σώζεται. Ρητώς και κατηγορηματικώς. Και ότι θα είναι σφραγίδα επί της χειρός, της δεξιάς μάλιστα, και επί του μετώπου, είναι ό,τι λέει ακριβώς το κείμενο. Ούτε κατά μεταφοράν, ούτε αλληγορία. Είναι ό,τι λέει το κείμενο. Πάει, τελείωσε. Δεν χωράει τίποτε άλλο. Τι γίνεται; Δεν μου λέτε; Το βάπτισμα τι είναι; Μια σφραγίδα. Πώς γίνεται αυτή η σφραγίδα;
