Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s fifteenth catechesis presents Christ’s Second Coming and the Antichrist within a life of spiritual vigilance rather than idle curiosity. God will not abandon creation or return it to nothing but will judge humanity, end the present course of history, and transform the cosmos into a better and incorruptible creation. The resurrection of the dead and the re-creation of the cosmos should inspire repentance, obedience to God’s commandments, love for Christ, and hope in the New Jerusalem illuminated by His uncreated light.

We are now in Saint Cyril’s fifteenth catechesis. Here he tells us that Christ will come again and that, since He will indeed return, the faithful must be ready, because on the eve
of Christ’s Coming, the Antichrist will appear. These are the themes Saint Cyril addresses in his fifteenth catechesis, and he speaks of them in a truly wondrous way. He does not speak merely about the Antichrist as a subject that arouses our curiosity, while we fail to adopt the proper spiritual attitude toward his coming. Rather, Saint Cyril places the whole subject within the framework of spiritual life and spiritual knowledge.
Thank you very much.
Last time, as Saint Cyril explained to us, we saw that this world has already been polluted—not, of course, by the detergents and other pollutants that have multiplied and have spoiled and contaminated the seas, the land, and the atmosphere, but by sin. As he says: “For corruption, theft, adultery, and every kind of sin have been poured out upon the earth, and blood has been mingled with blood in the world.” Everything has become filled with moral filth, “so that this wondrous dwelling may not remain filled with lawlessness.”
“This world passes away, so that a better one may be revealed.” Because, he says, this wondrous dwelling—our earth—must not remain filled with lawlessness, this world passes away so that a better world may be revealed. The principal point, then, is that the world passes away. But I would like to say just a few words about this dwelling, our earth, and how wondrous it is. It is a matter of how we see it—or, if you will, a matter of the heart. If we say that the universe—or rather, let us speak only of our earth—is ugly, that is either because sin has made it ugly or because sin dwells within us, preventing us from seeing it as the truly wondrous dwelling of God that came forth from the Creator’s hands. My beloved, the universe can be seen only through the eyes of purity. Only purity of heart gives us a true and objective vision, a vision unclouded in its knowledge
of the whole creation. I shall give you just one example, a very characteristic and striking one: sexual union, both among animals and among human beings. When man possessed an absolutely pure heart, he could see this union as one of God’s wisest works. But once man became corrupted in his understanding, he began to view it through countless impure eyes and in countless impure ways.
He sees it impurely. His understanding becomes corrupted, and then he can no longer see creation rightly. This inability to see creation rightly is one of the consequences of the Fall of our first parents. If we still possessed the eyes God originally fashioned for us, together with an entirely pure heart, we would see everything very differently. To reinforce this point, let me remind you of a passage from Holy Scripture. What does the Word of God say? It says that Adam and Eve were naked and were not ashamed, because no corruption existed within them.
They looked upon the whole human body without the slightest trace of corrupt desire. But as soon as they sinned, they began to feel shame, because corruption had entered within them. Their sin, of course, was the breaking of God’s commandment; it was not sexual, for there was no sin of that kind. They did come together after leaving Paradise, but man now had to be protected from the rapid corruption taking place within him. So God established shame to restrain that swift corruption. Man could no longer see rightly, and shame came as a brake upon his downward course. Death, likewise, is a punishment, but at the same time it is a blessing, because it prevents evil from becoming eternal and immortal. The same is true of shame. What does this mean? When man fell and his heart became defiled, God placed a barrier against the corruption in order to protect man himself as far as possible.
Of course, we can no longer see creation as it came forth from the hands of God. However hard we may try, a complete vision of it is no longer possible for us. That has been lost. Yet this world, regardless of the fact that we see it
with a certain corruption in our gaze, remains a wondrous dwelling, as Saint Cyril says. Only the saints can truly appreciate this—only the saints. Do not tell me that when we go out into the countryside and see the sun rising over the sea, or a magnificent morning filled with all the colors created by the sunlight, or a sunset, we have thereby grasped the beauty of creation. We merely touch that beauty. We only feel our way toward the true beauty of creation; we can no longer see it fully.
The proof is that, in all the religious systems man has devised, we find what we discussed during the question period: the phenomenon of dualism—the god of good and the god of evil. Look at all the pagan philosophical and religious systems. Everywhere you will find dualism stamped upon everything: the god of good and the god of evil. And yet God is the Creator of both matter and spirit. We have lost sight of this because we can no longer see. We can no longer see rightly.
For example, in the time of the Manichaeans—and we shall speak about the Manichaeans today—Holy Matrimony was regarded as impure. The Apostle Paul, although the Manichaeans came later, was compelled to speak prophetically, because this idea was already present in Gnosticism. He said that a time would come when people would call Holy Matrimony impure, “forbidding”—that is, preventing—people from entering into married union. They would even call certain foods impure, or claim that you commit murder by plucking and eating a fruit from a tree. What absurd ideas! And do not imagine that dualism has disappeared; it still exists today, though outside Christianity. This helps us understand what Christianity is: it opens and cleanses the eyes and the heart
so that man may see creation as it truly is. I shall not dwell on this any longer. I will only say that this dwelling remains wondrous, despite the ruin we have brought upon it and despite the fact that our technological civilization is close to turning our earth into a desert. You see, there was once a belief that technological civilization would improve nature. It is ridiculous—at the very least, ridiculous—to claim that technological civilization improves nature. It has condemned nature instead. Who can deny this? No one, no one, no one. We all now speak of the death of our earth.
We speak of the death of our earth and wonder whether there is still time to find some way—I am speaking as people speak today—to invent spacecraft quickly enough to escape from the earth, so that at least its last inhabitants might flee to other stars and live there, because our earth will have become uninhabitable. This is where technological civilization has brought it. Can you deny it? I believe no one can. What, then, was our earth like when it came forth from the Creator’s hands? Let us say this much: whatever God creates never returns to nothingness. Always remember that.
God returns nothing to nothingness, because everything He made was made well; everything was very good. Therefore, when human wickedness corrupts the earth and everything upon it, God does not abandon His creation as something ruined. He intervenes, restores order, and brings history to an end—He brings history to an end. He sends the righteous, and will send them, into His Kingdom, and the sinners into Hell. Then He changes this universe and restores it
to its first form, yet in a better form. This better form is what Saint Cyril calls “the fairer one”—that is, the better world that will be revealed. Within this new creation will dwell the person of righteousness, meaning the person of virtue, for here righteousness means virtue. Evil inclination will no longer exist, because the good inclination will have become firmly established. Neither the devil, nor the Antichrist, nor sinners will be there, for the sinners will be in eternal Hell. Thus, this wondrous dwelling is destined to become better. Let me put it this way:
it will be a second edition. This second edition of creation fills us with wonder and captivates us. Many years ago—I am sure I have told you this before, but I cannot help remembering it—I read and learned that creation’s future is to be transformed and made new, and I was shaken to the depths of my being. Certain things in the Word of God have profoundly shaken me and continue to do so. I shall mention only two: the resurrection of the dead, with their bodies, of course, and the re-creation of the whole creation. These truths have literally overwhelmed me and still hold me in awe. And I pray that, until I depart from this present life,
they will continue to hold me in awe. For only when the Word of God profoundly moves us through what it reveals can we stand upright, glorify God, and strive to keep His commandments. So I pray that these truths will not leave you indifferent, but will shake you, take hold of you, and become part of your daily life, so that they may form the foundation of your salvation. For how else shall we avoid sin? How else shall we love the Lord, unless we know what the love, power, and wisdom of God are bringing about?
“Do you wish to receive proof from the written words?” he asks. Do you wish to receive proof from what the Word of God reveals? “Hear Isaiah saying: ‘The heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll, and all the stars shall fall like leaves from a vine and like leaves falling from a fig tree.’” This is written in Isaiah, chapter 34, verse 4. But since Saint Cyril does not quote the whole prophecy, allow me to read it to you as I copied it from the Old Testament, including the words that come just before this passage, because we shall need them a little later. The text of the Septuagint says: “And all the powers of the heavens shall melt away.” They shall melt. The verb means “I melt”; in the passive, “I am melted.” So all the powers of the heavens will melt away. Some people think that the word “powers” refers to the holy angels, as when Christ says that “the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.” But it does not refer to the holy angels. Would we say that the holy angels will melt away? That would be very strange.
The Apostle Peter gives such a clear description—which I shall read to you later—that you will see this does not refer to the holy angels, but to the forces of the heavens. There are, of course, forces within the universe. Take the stars as an example. How does our earth remain in place? Where does it stand? The sun exerts forces upon it; that is how it remains in place. When I say that it stands, I mean that it revolves around the sun and follows its orbit around it. And consider all the stars suspended there in space. My beloved, tremendous forces are at work within the universe—tremendous forces. You know this very well. We learned it at school, even in primary school. These forces, he says, will melt away. But what does “melt away” mean?
They will undergo a weakening, an alteration; something will happen. “All the powers of the heavens”—not merely in our galaxy, but throughout the entire universe. “And the heaven shall be rolled up like a scroll.” The word “shall be rolled up” is the passive future of the verb elisso, or elissomai in the middle voice. The Ionic form is eilisso, spelled with epsilon-iota and a rough breathing, and with two sigmas. This matters, because the word eiletarion, “scroll,” which we shall discuss shortly, is derived from it, as is helix—something that turns or coils. This is very important, and that is why I am also giving you the words derived from it. You will see why.
The heaven, he says, “shall be rolled up”; it will turn. That is how the word elisso or elissomai is translated: “to turn” or “to revolve”—“like a scroll.” “And all the stars shall fall.” All the stars will fall as the leaves fall from the vine and the fig tree. You have seen this in autumn, in October or November: once the leaves have turned yellow, a light breeze blows, and the leaves fall from the vine and the fig tree. It is astonishing. But let us examine and analyze this.
When he says that all the powers of the heavens will melt, the Apostle Peter tells us the same thing. But, as I said, we shall look at that a little later. “The heaven shall be rolled up like a scroll.” We need to understand what a book was like in those days. It did not have the form in which we know it today.
Today we have separate pages, each attached along one side to a common spine, giving us the familiar form of a book, which I need not describe. In antiquity, however, a book took the form of an eiletarion, a scroll. As I told you, the word eiletarion comes from the verb elisso, “to roll.”
Because those were the materials available, they used papyrus, for example. Papyrus is a reed that grows along the banks of the Nile. They took its strips and processed them, and papyrus still exists today. In fact, someone once gave me a piece of papyrus as a gift. It moved me deeply, because where else would I ever have seen papyrus? They join the narrow strips together in the proper way and process them very thoroughly, producing a surface on which one can write.
There are, of course, many surviving manuscripts written on papyrus—not only manuscripts of Holy Scripture, but also other texts preserved from antiquity. Later there was parchment, made from animal skins, chiefly goatskins, especially the skins of young goats, even unborn kids. This method of making books was invented by the Greeks in Pergamum in Asia Minor, and so the material—this form of writing sheet—was called parchment. The Greek word chartes did not mean what we now call paper; it meant, more generally, any material on which one writes. In time, the general term chartes came to mean what we now call paper. This material, which is made from...
wood shavings, as you know, and from fibers such as cotton. Today we make paper from many different materials. But parchment took its name from the city of Pergamum. It was a long, flat sheet—a single sheet—which had to be gathered up after use. They rolled it up, tied a thread around it, and stored it. Ancient libraries, such as those of Alexandria and Pergamum, had shelves or compartments in which these rolls were placed. Notice these rolls: they were kept in cases, and this was the form of the libraries of antiquity. Now, the writing was on the inner side. But because writing material was very expensive, they began to use the outer side as well. You should note that Pergamum invented parchment because Egypt, out of rivalry, either refused to sell papyrus or sold it at a very high price, so that no other great library might arise and the library of Alexandria might remain unrivaled. The people of Pergamum therefore invented parchment from animal skin, and animal skin is far superior to papyrus. So how were they to continue writing? They had written on the inside;
then they would write on the outside as well. I unroll it. It is not enough to have writing only on the inside; we must also write on the outside. So, when I took it from the library and unrolled it to read, I would turn it inside out—remember that phrase, “inside out”—and then, after finishing the inside, I would read the outside. This, then, was the form of books in antiquity. And the Prophet Isaiah tells us that the heaven “shall be rolled up like a scroll.” In other words, it will turn like the scroll; it will be turned inside out.
The word eiletarion, “scroll,” receives its meaning from the verb eileo, spelled with epsilon-iota and written either with one lambda or two. The middle form is eiloumai—always with epsilon-iota—and eilethesetai is the passive future of eileo. Pay attention, then: it means to contract, to revolve, to turn inside out, to draw together, to roll up, and to rotate. Concerning the heavenly bodies, Aristotle writes the following in the Timaeus. Forgive me—no, no, I am giving you the wrong reference. The Timaeus is by Plato. Well, then!
Aristotle writes, “the earth revolving about the axis stretched through all things,” meaning, in the language we would use today, that the earth rotates on its own axis. I have analyzed these words to show you something truly astonishing: the universe will not be removed from its place, but will be turned inside out like a scroll. Or, as a verse from the Psalms says, “You will roll it up like a cloak.” What is a cloak? An overcoat. In the old days, we would go to the tailor because we had one overcoat.
We might go to our grave having owned only that one overcoat. So we would turn it inside out to make it new again and wear it for another thirty or forty years. Just as the overcoat is turned inside out and made new, so the universe will be turned inside out and made new. If you ask me how we can understand this turning inside out, I will tell you: it is beyond comprehension. That is my answer—it is beyond comprehension. We are simply being given an image of how the universe will be changed. We do not know what this change actually means. We know only its results: the universe will pass from corruption into incorruption,
into immortality. And every living being, including human beings, will pass from mortality into immortality. This is as far as we can enter into—or rather, begin to touch—the Mystery.
Saint Cyril says, “And the Gospel declares.” The Gospel also says: “The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven.” The Lord Himself says this in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 24, verse 29. I should tell you that Saint Cyril first gives two or three passages from Holy Scripture, and then I bring in something from the Fathers and add another two or three passages. There are a great many passages in Holy Scripture that speak of the transformation of the universe. Pay attention:
this is not a single isolated passage that someone might think should be interpreted differently. There are many passages that speak of the transformation of creation. What does the Gospel say? What does the Lord say? That the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven. Of course, this does not refer to shooting stars. Those are nothing but stones entering the earth’s atmosphere, where friction with the particles of the air makes them glow, so that we think we are seeing stars fall. Shooting stars are not actual stars, not great celestial bodies. Here, however, He is speaking of the stars of heaven falling.
Where will they go? As I told you, this is an image. We shall see what will happen. Here Saint Cyril offers a word of consolation: “Let us not grieve,” he says, “as though we alone come to an end; the stars also come to an end.” Let us not grieve because we human beings are not the only ones who die. The stars die as well.
The stars die. I remember a very fine book by an English astronomer, Sir James Jeans, which had been translated into Greek some thirty years earlier. It was a wonderful book, entitled The Mysterious Universe, and it contained a chapter
called “The Dying Sun.” It made a profound impression on me. I was still an adolescent, still young, and that chapter, “The Dying Sun,” impressed me deeply. My dear ones, science itself tells us that the universe is dying. Of course, we do not need science to tell us this, but in this case the words of Saint Cyril are striking:
“And the stars come to an end.” Science may tell us that although stars die, new ones are also born. But stars cannot forever keep dying while others are born, just as human beings cannot forever keep dying while new ones are born. At some point, the stars will only die. Yet I should note something here, because according to scientists the process of the universe’s decline—or rather, its death—is extremely long.
For example, the lifespan of the sun is such that, if we represent its entire life as one hundred years, our sun has so far reached only the age of five. It still has another ninety-five years to live. Comparatively speaking, as you understand, it has not yet spent nineteen-twentieths of its life, but only one-twentieth.
The death of the universe will not be a scientific phenomenon—or, better, merely the result of the universe’s natural decay. It will be a sign of Christ’s Second Coming (Parousia). If, for example, Christ were to come tomorrow, the universe would be transformed—not because it had grown old, but because its Creator had come and was transforming it. In other words, the transformation of the universe will not simply coincide with the collapse of creation, as though it occurred because the law of entropy had taken effect, energy throughout the universe had reached the same level, and therefore the universe was dying. No. It will happen because the Creator will enter His creation and transform the universe. The stars, then, die, but perhaps they will rise again. Saint Cyril adds the word “perhaps.” I shall explain why. “Perhaps,” he says, “they too shall rise again.”
Of course, they may rise again and return to their places. But Saint Cyril says “perhaps.” Do you know why? He is entirely right to do so—most wisely and under divine inspiration—because we do not know what form the new universe will take. Professor Bratsiotis, in his commentary on the Apocalypse, finds grounds in the text for suggesting that the bodies in the universe will no longer be spherical. For John the Evangelist says there—although this is a very profound matter, and I mention it only in passing—that the sun, the earth, the moon, and even the sea are no longer anywhere to be found. All these things have passed away.
Christ makes all things new. It says, “The old things have passed away.” The old things have passed, and now all things are made new. But what will these new things be like?
What will these new things be like? Scripture says that the city, the New Jerusalem, has no need of the sun or the moon. This new city, Jerusalem—the Church—is the new creation, the renewed universe. There they will no longer need the sun, because there will be light: the light of the person of Christ. What light is this? It is the uncreated light. The light that now exists within the universe is the light we know as physical energy, and that energy has a material reality; energy is another form of matter. But the light of the Transfiguration of Christ is not created light. It is the uncreated light that proceeds from the essence of God. Therefore, if there will be no sun or moon, but rather the uncreated light of Christ, then what form will the universe have? Paradise gives us an indication of the Kingdom of God—for Paradise is one thing, and the Kingdom of God another. The Apostle Paul was taken up into Paradise, and he says that the things God has prepared for those who love Him have neither been seen by the eye nor heard by the ear. So there will not only be sight; there will also be hearing.
“Nor has it entered into the heart of man.” The phrase uses this particular construction. That is to say...
They have never even become objects of human desire, because they lie beyond human understanding. It is therefore a new world that no one can describe. Human language cannot describe it. “It is not lawful for a man to utter.” These things cannot be expressed in human language. That is why Saint Cyril does not claim to know. He says that perhaps the new creation will have stars again, but perhaps it will not. Yet this material world, precisely as a material world, will not lose even a single atom of matter. When we say that something is lost, the verb means that it returns to nothingness. When we say that a candle...
has burned away, nothing has actually been lost. You learned this in school. It has become something else. The candle has lost its former shape, but it has become something else. Nothing is lost. Let me remind you of Lavoisier, and take you back to your earliest school days. Nothing is lost. So when we say that the stars will disappear, we mean that they will become something else. Nothing is lost—not a single atom of matter. Therefore, “Let us not grieve as though we alone were dying.” Let us not grieve as though we alone perish. “The stars also die, but perhaps they will rise again. The Lord will come to the heavens...”
“not to destroy them, but to raise them up again in a better state.” The Lord does not come to destroy, abolish, or cause the heavens to disappear, but to bring them forth as something better. The words are, “to raise them up better.” This is very beautiful. We are therefore passing from a world grown old into a new world. And this will take place at Christ’s Second Coming, as I now tell you for the second time.
Take note! Take note that the Fathers of our Church have indeed spoken about this subject. Something so important could not have escaped their attention. I will now give you just a few passages from Holy Scripture beyond what Isaiah says here. Saint Cyril will also give us one passage from the Psalms, and then we shall hear something from the Fathers. The Apostle Peter says in his Second Epistle, chapter 3, verses 10 through 13: “The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.” The day of the Lord, he says, will come suddenly, like a thief in the night. “In which”—that is, on that day—“the heavens will pass away with a great noise.” This transformation will happen in an instant. That means, my dear friends...
we have come into existence, and we will never return to nothingness. Our eyes still have many things to behold. So let us not grieve because we die. We shall rise again; we shall spring forth again. Let us not grieve because we die. The heavens, then, will pass away; they will pass away with a great rushing noise. The Greek word rhoizos—spelled rho, omicron, iota, zeta—means noise. They will pass away with a mighty crash. “And the elements will melt with fervent heat.” The elements of creation will be dissolved by burning. What does Isaiah say? I read it to you earlier—Saint Cyril does not quote it here, but I remind you again: “And all the powers of the heavens shall melt.”
What does the Apostle Peter say? “The elements will melt with fervent heat.” Once the elements of creation have burned, they will be dissolved. They will be broken down, just as fire or some other means can break a compound body into its individual elements. The elements are released. If I burn wood, its elements are released. How can I obtain potash, which we discussed last time? By burning wood. There is no other way to obtain it. I burn the wood, collect the ash, and obtain potash. The burning of the elements, therefore, will produce something else. “And the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”
The earth and everything upon it will all be dissolved—everything—through fire. But what is this fire?
I have written down the reference somewhere, but the Apostle Peter says something astonishing: within matter itself—within the matter of these worlds and the heavens, within everything material—God has stored up fire. And all these things will be dissolved.
“What manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the Second Coming (Parousia) of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved by fire and the elements will melt with fervent heat?” Where can we stand? Nothing remains for us but godliness, my dear friends, when amid this fearful event the heavens themselves are dissolved—not only the earth, but the heavens also, everything. “Nevertheless we look for new heavens...”
Thank you very much. Father Konstantinos has found it. Thank you, Father. It is in the Second Epistle of Peter, chapter 3. It says: “The heavens and the earth which are now”—the present heavens and earth, meaning what we call the sun, the moon, the stars, our galaxy, the other galaxies, the billions of galaxies that exist, and our earth. Listen to why it speaks here of “the heavens and the earth”: “By His word they are stored up for fire.” By His own word they have been stored up; they conceal the fire within themselves like a treasure. Do you hear? The fire.
As I told you, we know this because we draw this fire, this energy, out of matter. They are “reserved for the day of judgment.” This is being preserved to take place on the day of judgment. Then it will happen: “for the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly men,” and so forth. Thank you. And so, “According to His promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” We await new heavens and a new earth according to His promise, heavens and an earth in which virtue and righteousness—that is, holiness—will dwell. Here righteousness does not have the narrow meaning of justice; it means virtue.
They have not gone anywhere.
What already exists is turned inside out and transformed. It would be inconceivable for the old heaven and the old earth to go somewhere else and for something entirely new to be made. The old world itself becomes new.
What has grown old becomes new. That is why I insisted so much on those words meaning “it will be rolled up,” and the other related forms. It is turned inside out, like a scroll, as Isaiah says. And now, my dear friends, let us look at something from the Fathers. Ah! The Apostle Paul says in his First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 7, verse 31:
This is from Saint Irenaeus, who uses a passage from the Apostle Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, 7:31. It is found in Saint Irenaeus, fragment 96 in the Patrologia. He says: “For neither the hypostasis—the concrete existence—nor the essence of creation vanishes, for true and sure is He who established it.” Neither the hypostasis nor the essence of creation disappears. We do not return to nothingness, because He who brought creation into being—
—is the Creator, true and sure. “I am the Amen, the sure and faithful One,” Christ says. The Father also says this. In the Old Testament, God the Word is the Lord, Yahweh, the Amen, the Lord who confirms and is Himself sure. Whatever He creates, He does not return to nothingness. But now, as the Apostle Paul says, “The form of this world is passing away.” What passes away? Not the essence of creation, but its form. In other words, the form of the universe will change. It will change. “That is, the form in which the transgression occurred, because within it man grew old.” This is the realm in which man grew old through his sins. “And for this reason this form became temporary.” Which form? The spherical form.
It became temporary, because God, who knows all things beforehand, foreknew what would happen. Let me make a brief aside. Why, in this vast universe, did God make our earth as the place for us to live, while we feel cramped upon it and speak of the earth’s resources running out—the exhaustion of oil, coal, and other fuels—and say that the earth cannot produce enough food for us? Why do we make observations like those of Malthus and develop Malthusianism and neo-Malthusianism—
—arguing that births must be limited because the population grows geometrically while the earth’s produce grows only arithmetically, and therefore, therefore, therefore, we quarrel because the earth is too small? Pay attention to where I am going. The answer is very simple. Since our home here is not permanent and will unquestionably soon pass away, the earth does not need to be larger. God keeps us here for as long as we need its provisions. Then history will come to an end. And the argument, “Why do wars happen? Because the earth is too small,” is mistaken. Was there not enough room for four people—for Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel? Why did Cain kill Abel? Do wars not arise because of the passions? The passions, the passions, the passions! My dear friends, it is the passions that give birth to wars—
—not simply a population of five or ten billion people upon the earth. Look, for example, at how the earth’s food is distributed, and you will understand. We do not send food to those who are hungry because we want to keep the prices of our products high. And there are many other dreadful things done by the so-called civilized world. Woe to the civilized world! So this is why God made the earth small. Yes, and there is another reason: so that we may place our hope in God. We should say, “The earth is small, but God is our helper; He is the Creator of the universe.” Two million Hebrews were in the wilderness. Who fed them? God. What was He teaching them? He was teaching them to place their hope in God and depend upon Him. Some of them, although manna did not fall on the Sabbath, went out to gather it—
—and some gathered more than the portion intended for the Sabbath, which they were permitted to gather on the previous day. They were afraid that God might not send manna again, so they gathered extra. That extra manna bred worms, whereas the manna gathered on Friday for the Sabbath did not. And God became angry and said, “After all this, do you still not trust Me?” The purpose was to develop man’s trust in God. Jesus Christ is in the wilderness, and His disciples say to Him: “Lord, send the crowds away, for they are tired and hungry. Let them walk to the surrounding villages and find bread.” Then the Lord says, “You give them something to eat.” John Chrysostom comments: “The place is desolate.”
This is beautiful: “The place is desolate, but He who feeds the whole inhabited world is present.” God therefore desired man to depend upon Him at every moment. That is the whole point. Saint Irenaeus expresses it beautifully here: “When this form has passed away, and man has been renewed”—man becomes a new man—“and has flourished into incorruption, so that he can no longer grow old, there shall be a new heaven and a new earth.” A new heaven and a new earth. “In the new creation, man shall remain.” This is why I told you—
—that the new universe will become the Kingdom of God. Man will remain forever new, communing with God. He will have communion with God, and we shall behold God in the person of Jesus Christ. “For Isaiah says.” Isaiah says: “As the new heaven and the new earth which I make remain before Me,” says the Lord. The new heaven and the new earth—those things which I make—remain before Me and no longer disappear. They remain unto the ages of ages, throughout eternity, says the Lord. Isaiah 66:22. But the book of the Didache, an ancient work from the beginning of the second century, also says this: “And then—”
—“the signs of the truth shall appear.” The signs of the truth. “First, the sign of an unfolding in heaven”—a spreading out, an opening. “Then the sign of the sound of the trumpet,” when, as the Lord says, an angel will sound the trumpet—or rather, forgive me, as the Apostle Paul says—“and third, the resurrection of the dead.” Three signs of the truth. Of the truth! What are they? The world will be made new, an angel will sound the trumpet, and the dead will rise. These are the three things. And Saint Gregory the Theologian puts it beautifully in his Thirty-First Theological Oration: “There have been two manifest changes in the course of life throughout all the ages, and these are also called the two Testaments—”
—“and earthquakes, because of the great renown of the event: the first, from idols to the Law; the second, from the Law to the Gospel.” Two transitions took place in all of history, and they are called two Testaments and two earthquakes. The first was the passage from idolatry to Christianity—forgive me, from idolatry to the Law—and the second from the Law to Christianity. Through a new, third earthquake, Saint Gregory says, “the passage from this realm to that realm” will be accomplished. A third earthquake: the passage from things here to things there, from the old to the new. My dear friends, all these things, as you understand, are exceedingly great, exceedingly important, and exceedingly beautiful.
When a person continually keeps these things in his nous, his spiritual intellect, they take hold of him and shake his whole life to its foundations. He looks at the universe and says, “It will be made new.” He sees that the earth will be made new. Then he does not grieve over the present world, except when people sin. As for himself, he strives and struggles to live according to the will of God, so that he may live within those new heavens and that new earth. But we have not exhausted the subject. God willing, we shall continue next Sunday.

να με κρατούν συγκλονισμένο. Διότι μόνο εάν μας συγκλονίζει ο Λόγος του Θεού σε εκείνα που μας αποκαλύπτει, μόνο τότε μπορούμε να σταθούμε όρθιοι και να δοξολογούμε τον Θεό και να φροντίζουμε για την τήρηση των εντολών Του. Γι' αυτό και θα ευχηθώ κι εγώ σε εσάς αυτά να μην σας αφήσουν αδιάφορους, αλλά να σας συγκλονίσουν, να σας συνέχουν και να τα ζείτε καθημερινά, ώστε αυτά να γίνουν και το υπόβαθρο της σωτηρίας σας. Γιατί πώς αλλιώς θα αποφύγουμε την αμαρτία, πώς αλλιώς θα αγαπήσουμε τον Κύριο, παρά μόνο εάν γνωρίζουμε εκείνα τα οποία η αγάπη, η δύναμη και η σοφία του Θεού εργάζεται;
Κάνει τόσο καλή περιγραφή ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, που θα σας διαβάσω μετά, και θα δείτε ότι δεν πρόκειται περί των Αγίων Αγγέλων, αλλά περί των δυνάμεων του ουρανού. Εννοείται ότι υπάρχουν μέσα στο σύμπαν, που αποτελούν δυνάμεις. Τα αστέρια, πάρτε παράδειγμα. Πώς στέκεται η γη μας; Πού στέκεται; Ασκεί δυνάμεις ο ήλιος. Έτσι στέκεται. Ο ήλιος, δηλαδή, τον λέω στέκεται, ενώ περιστρέφεται περί τον ήλιον, περιφέρεται περί τον ήλιον. Όλα τα αστέρια που υπάρχουν έτσι ξεκρέμαστα. Υπάρχουν φοβερές δυνάμεις, αγαπητοί μου, μέσα στο σύμπαν. Φοβερές δυνάμεις. Τις ξέρετε. Ξέρετε όλα αυτά πολύ καλά. Από το σχολείο μας τα ξέρουμε και από το Δημοτικό Σχολείο τα ξέρουμε. Λοιπόν, αυτά, λέει, θα λιώσουν. Τι θα πει «θα λιώσουν»;
Ο Χριστός τα κάνει καινούργια. Λέγει: «Τα αρχαία παρήλθε». Τα παλιά πέρασαν και, αφού πέρασαν τα παλιά, όλα έρχονται καινούργια. Πώς θα είναι αυτά τα καινούργια;
Η γη και ό,τι υπάρχει πάνω στη γη, όλα θα διαλυθούν. Όλα. Διά της πυράς. Ποια είναι αυτή η πυρά;
