Summary

Saint Cyril interprets Malachi’s prophecy as announcing both Christ’s humble first coming to His Temple and His glorious Second Coming as Lord Almighty. Adultery violates both the marriage covenant and its greater spiritual image, the union of Christ and the Church, while faithful spiritual life safeguards spouses and families. Titus presents the two appearances together: saving grace has already appeared in Christ’s first coming, while believers await His glorious return as our great God and Savior.

We are still in the fifteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, which concerns the Second Coming of the Lord. We are in the second paragraph, where we examined that marvelous prophecy of the Prophet Malachi concerning the Lord’s two comings, appearances, or manifestations—these words are synonymous. I shall read you the prophecy again. We have already examined it, but there is one further comment to make. “And suddenly,” says the prophet—that is, without warning—“the Lord whom you seek will come to His temple.” “The Lord,” he says, “will come to His temple—the Lord whom you seek.” They were, of course, always seeking the Redeemer, because God had already promised that the Redeemer would come. This was the longing of all humanity, and especially of the Jews, who possessed the true and crystal-clear voice of the prophets.

He will come suddenly, and He will come to His own temple; and the Temple belongs to Jehovah, to Yahweh—that is, to the Lord. That is how He is named here: “The Lord will come to His temple.” The Lord will come. And how did we say He would come? On His own feet.

This implies the Incarnation: the One who was to come as a man is the Lord—that is, God. In other words, Jesus Christ is Yahweh. This is powerful ammunition against the Jehovah’s Witnesses. For they say—and this is by no means the only passage; there are a great many passages, a great many, listen to me—

a great many passages, when the New Testament and the Old Testament are read together, which demonstrate that Jesus Christ is Yahweh. Yahweh means “Lord.” Jehovah is another, less satisfactory rendering, introduced by the Jehovah’s Witnesses. It refers to the same name, but it is not a very successful form. In theology we say Yahweh: the Lord.

They say that Christ is not the Son of God in the sense of being consubstantial—of one essence with the Father—but that He is a created being. According to them, He is a son of God in the same way that we are sons of God. This is their great blasphemy, their great outrage: it is Arianism. What more did Arius himself say? Arius said that the Son—that is, Jesus Christ—is a created being. The Jehovah’s Witnesses say the same. Arianism was the most dreadful heresy and, chronologically, the first to appear, at least among the great heresies. Therefore, the One who will come to His temple is the Lord, and He will come to His own temple. Even if the word “Lord” were absent, the words “to His temple” would be enough. It is His own temple—whose temple, then, is it?

“The messenger of the covenant whom you seek.” “Behold one coming,” says Saint Cyril. “Behold, the Lord Almighty is coming; and who will endure the day of His entrance?” Now it says that He is coming; it does not say that He is coming to His temple.

As man, He came to His temple, for the Lord preached in the Temple courts. I am not speaking of His visit when He was twelve years old; I mean the time when He preached in the Temple courts. That is what I mean. But now the prophecy says, “Behold, He is coming.” And, as you know, the word “behold” is used in Holy Scripture—Luke uses it very often—when something exceptional is about to be said, something to which the reader must pay close attention. “Behold, the Lord Almighty is coming”—once again, the Lord Almighty. Here, however, He comes in another manner. Pay attention: “And who will endure the day of His entrance?” Who can endure the day of His entrance, when He enters—where? Into history. Or, if you prefer, into history and into the universe. Into history...

and into the universe. God is present everywhere, but He will enter history in a manifest way, bringing history to an end; and He will enter the universe, concerning which we shall see what is to happen. I hope we shall reach that today, though I do not think we will. “And who will stand when He appears?” Who can look upon Him? Yet when He came the first time, not only did we look upon Him, but we also crucified Him. “For He comes like the fire of a smelting furnace and like the cleansing substance used by launderers.” It is like lye, like potash. That is what this cleansing substance is.

“Used by launderers”—by those who wash; in other words, a cleansing substance that will purify. This is as far as we had come last time, my beloved. And Saint Cyril says, “This is the Second Coming of the Lord.” It is the same person in both the First and the Second Coming. The prophecy continues:

“He will sit, smelting and purifying.” I should tell you that this prophecy is found in Malachi, chapter three, verses one through three. What does it say? “He will sit, smelting and purifying.” He will sit...

to refine by fire and to purify. “Smelting” means that He will kindle the furnace and cleanse with the washing substance—with lye, with potash.

So He will come in order to refine by fire and to purify. What will He refine, and what will He purify? I shall not finish this subject at this point, because a little further on Saint Cyril refers to Isaiah and other passages. When we reach that point, we shall recall this; keep it in mind. Perhaps we shall return to it next time.

And so the prophecy continues. “Immediately,” he says, “the Savior Himself...” And then, he says, this same Savior will speak. Which Savior?

What does the same prophet say in the same verse? “And I will draw near.” Saint Cyril is a Christian, of course, and naturally alternates the terms: the Lord of the Old Testament is the Savior of the New Testament. He is the same person. That is why he calls Him the Savior: “And I will draw near to you for judgment, and I will be a swift witness against sorcerers, against adulteresses, and against those who swear falsely by My name.” “I will bring you,” He says—the expression means, “I will bring you before Me so that I may judge you.” This is in the Old Testament. I emphasize: it is in Malachi. I will bring you before Me, I will judge you, and I will stand as a swift witness. Why swift? Because He is omniscient. Look at the whole content of the judgment: “I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink”; and then, “Depart from Me.”

Into the outer darkness, and so forth. “Lord...” “Workers of lawlessness, depart from here.” Elsewhere this expression, “workers of lawlessness,” is used more specifically. It is not said in Matthew 25; Luke records the passage where they say, “Lord, did we not eat and drink with You?” And again: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” I shall say to you, “Depart from before Me—

Thank you. You “workers of lawlessness,” who spent your lives laboring at the grinding wheel of sin. “I will be a swift witness.” I do not need others to tell Me who you are; I know you. But against whom does He speak, and which sins does He select as representative? “Against sorcerers, against adulteresses, and against those who swear falsely by My name.” There are three categories of sin: sorcery and, more generally, the evil arts, as Saint Cyril says; adultery—not in a spiritual or figurative sense, but literal adultery; and false oaths, or perjury. Three things. You know that these three were especially emphasized in the Old Testament. And I should tell you—do not be surprised—that all three relate to the opening commandments of the Decalogue. Pay attention: all three sins relate to the first commandments of the Decalogue, those that concern the person of God. The violation of God’s first commandments is nothing other than impiety, as I have told you before, whereas violating the remaining commandments, which concern our neighbor, is called sin.

Impiety is far worse than sin. So this is where these offenses belong. Who is the “sorcerer” mentioned here? A practitioner of magic. The Greek word pharmakeia means sorcery: spiritualism, reading coffee cups, and consulting witches and sorcerers. This is the doorway of the devil. Did I say the doorway of the devil? Yes. You have abandoned God and gone to the devil. Does God not say, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your soul, and with all your strength”? How, then, can you now abandon God? It is an offense against God, and you go instead to the devil.

You abandon the worship of God and go to worship the devil. For when you go to consult the devil, you offer him a libation of worship, because you accept what he tells you. Then there is adultery. Of course, you will say to me, “The commandment says, ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ and it does not refer directly to God.” Yes, that is correct. I shall return to this meaning. In essence, when a woman leaves her husband and commits adultery, or when a man commits adultery—this, my beloved, constitutes a type. The commandment concerns the act itself, but at the same time the act is also a type.

A type of which commandment, you ask? Of the first. The Church of Israel—the word “Church” is already known in the Old Testament, meaning the assembly of the faithful—the Church of Israel, spoken of in the feminine, was understood to have God as her Bridegroom. Therefore, if you apostatize from God by turning to idolatry and flirting with sin, you become spiritually an adulterer or an adulteress. It is in this sense that Christ said, “O faithless and adulterous generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I endure you?” Remember the father who brought Him his demon-possessed child, after the disciples had been unable to cast out the demon. The Lord spoke these words on that occasion. Did He mean that all the people of His time were literally adulterers? No. He meant it in the broader sense: they were abandoning God. Here in the text, however, the word also has its specific meaning, because a little further on Saint Cyril will speak to us about adultery in the primary, literal sense of the word, not metaphorically. That is, the text speaks of adulteresses. Forgive me; let me return to the previous point. Holy Matrimony is a Mystery, and at the same time, do not forget, it is a type of another Mystery, one greater than the Mystery of Holy Matrimony.

This is what the Apostle Paul says in the passage the chanters read during the service of Holy Matrimony. What do they read? These are not my words. Whose words are they? The Apostle Paul’s. What does he say Holy Matrimony is? “This is a great Mystery concerning Christ and the Church.” What is the great Mystery? The great Mystery is not Holy Matrimony itself. The great Mystery is the union of Christ and the Church. From His side came forth water and blood, which are Baptism and Holy Communion—the two Mysteries that constitute the Church. Therefore we, as the Church, came forth from the side of Christ, just as Eve came forth from the side of Adam. Which, then, is the greater Mystery: Eve coming from Adam—

Or the Church from Christ? Clearly, the Church from Christ. Just as Eve came ontologically from Adam and received his essence, so too the Church received the essence of the Son of God. What does that mean? What is the Church? The Body of Christ. This is what I was explaining earlier in response to the question about how we are to understand what we call putting on Christ. This is what it means: I become, so to speak, of one body and one blood with Him. Therefore, if you, as a married person—whether husband or wife—become involved with a third person, first you destroy the dimensions of the lesser Mystery, namely your Holy Matrimony, and second, through what it represents as a type, you destroy...

the greater Mystery, which is the union of Christ and the Church. The punishment, therefore, is very severe. This is why the prophet speaks of adultery: to emphasize how serious it is, both in its first dimension, within the marriage of two people, and in its second dimension, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. What would you say? What do you think? Is Holy Matrimony not a double-edged sword? Once you are married, Saint Paul the Apostle says, be content: let the husband remain with his wife and the wife with her husband. Be content with that. Nothing more. It is a double-edged sword, so take care. Holy Matrimony is not always what we imagine it to be—a guarantee of security and so forth. And if you want further proof, my beloved, in our own age, I hardly need to tell you. You live in this world and in this society, and you can see it for yourselves. We have become so corrupt—and I am not speaking about other nations, but about our own people—that adultery has become an everyday occurrence. I must take this seriously and guard against it. That is why...

A husband should watch over his wife, and a wife over her husband, though certainly not with jealousy in its harmful sense. This is why they married: each must guard the other. Adam was beside Eve in order to guard her. From what? From transgression. And Eve was beside Adam in order to guard him. From what? From transgression. Not, of course, specifically from adultery, but from transgression in the broader sense, such as eating the fruit. They did not guard one another; instead, each drew the other into sin. Let me tell you how people lead one another astray today: through tolerance. ‘You, my wife, may have whatever male friends you like, but do not ask which female friends I have.’ And I will not even mention that there are couples who go further still. Yes, this is what we have come to.

Couples exchange wives with one another. Twelve or thirteen years ago, a film was shown here in Larissa under the title, ‘Come, Let Us Exchange Our Wives.’ You see, the great procurer—and you know what a procurer is—the great procurer is the cinema. Today it is television, but it is also the cinema, television, and videos: all the things we bring into our homes, including particular films with dreadful content. The bishop at that time saw this title advertised on the street, outside the cinema, and he was beside himself. He telephoned the police and said, ‘Remove this film.’

Of course, if we said today, ‘Remove this film,’ we would be considered ridiculous. People would say, ‘What are you talking about?’ We have become accustomed to such things. ‘Come, Let Us Exchange Our Wives.’ My beloved, this is a dreadful condition, and when such things happen, morals have become utterly debased. You may ask, then, ‘Must I keep my wife under guard?’ No, we are not going to do what people did in the Middle Ages, when a husband leaving for work—whether you laugh at this or weep, I do not know—would lock up...

He would lock up his wife. Not in a room, of course; there was a special metal device that he fastened with a lock. He locked up his wife so that she could not dishonor him. Are we going to do that? Certainly not! God forbid! What, then, are we to do? I will tell you the safest way...

Saint Basil the Great gives it: when a woman sees her husband fasting, and when a husband likewise sees his wife fasting and living a life of devotion more generally, then, my beloved, there is security. What else do you expect? However much a woman may pretend to be devout, she will not succeed in sustaining that role. Pay attention: she will not succeed in sustaining it. There is an Achilles’ heel, a tiny crack through which the truth will show. That test is fasting. A person who commits adultery does not fast. This is an extremely subtle and vitally important...

an extremely important observation by Saint Basil the Great: the person who commits adultery does not fast. So the way is simple: let us enter upon the path of God; let us pray, fast, attend Church, confess our sins, and receive Holy Communion. Then, even if the husband is at the North Pole and the wife at the South Pole, you can trust one another. That settles it. We will not become jealous people or policemen, watching every move our husband or wife makes. No. There is no need when we possess the security of the spiritual life. Is that not so? In this way, my beloved, you will have peace in your homes, stability in your families, and true happiness—the happiness that springs from these things.

There is devotion to God. As Saint Paul the Apostle says, devotion is beneficial to every person and in every circumstance. ‘All these people,’ the Lord says, ‘I will bring before Me for judgment.’ To return to the prophecy: I will bring them before Me for judgment. Pay attention and remember what I reminded you of: He sits at the refiner’s furnace, kindles the fire, and has potash with which to cleanse. To cleanse what? We shall see further on. For this reason, Saint Paul the Apostle warns us in advance, saying: ‘If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, or straw, each one’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it is revealed by fire.’

This is why the Apostle writes these words. Where does he write them? In the First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter three, verse twelve and following. Pay attention: each one of you must take care how you build your very being and, more broadly, how you order your whole life. What foundation are you laying? The foundation is Christ, because Saint Paul the Apostle is addressing believers. Yes, but what are you building upon that foundation, which is Christ? The foundation is faith in Christ. But what are you now building upon it? One person builds with gold, another with silver, another with precious gems or precious stones—diamonds, perhaps, or marble and the like; these too are called precious materials.

Others build with wood, grass, or straw. The Day is coming. Which day? The great Day, the Day of the Lord. It is the great Day. That Day will reveal everything through fire: ‘because it is revealed by fire.’ Remember the Lord’s refiner’s furnace, where He heats the kiln. Here this furnace has two aspects: the first is cleansing, because fire cleanses; the second is punishment, for it is the fire of Hell. Thus, fire both cleanses and punishes; it burns, as the Lord Himself said. But...

each person is building. If you give alms, fast, pray, preserve purity and chastity, and take care to carry out the will of God, you are building with gold, silver, or, as Saint Paul the Apostle says here, precious stones. As you can see, he gives two groups of three. If you wish, this first group of three corresponds to what the Lord says: ‘One bears fruit a hundredfold, another sixtyfold, and another thirtyfold.’ Gold, silver, and precious stones. Do you see the correspondence? The wording moves in descending order.

You understand. You may not be at the hundredfold level, like Saint Paul the Apostle, or at sixtyfold. If you are not at sixty, then you are at thirty. But you must bear fruit. When fire is applied, these materials endure: precious stones, silver, and gold. If a building catches fire, these materials may at most melt, but they remain. If, however, you build, as he says here, with wood, grass, and straw, what happens when the fire comes? Nothing remains. You will be left naked; you will stand naked before Christ the Judge. In other words, you will have nothing left to say to Him and nothing to offer Him. You will have no works of spiritual life.

You are on the foundation of Christ, but you have no works. My beloved, let us pay close attention to this point: we must labor to acquire the virtues. Saint Paul the Apostle also indicates these two comings when he writes to Titus and says—here is another passage from Holy Scripture, from the New Testament, referring to the two comings of Christ. Like the passage from Malachi, we should examine this one with special care and see what it says. It is from Titus, chapter two, verses eleven through thirteen: ‘For the saving grace of God has appeared to all people.’

‘Training us, so that, having renounced...’ What does Saint Cyril say in his commentary? ‘Concerning the first, he says, “has appeared”; concerning the second, “awaiting.”’ Do you see? In the first case, meaning the first appearance of Christ, he speaks of it as something already accomplished, because Christ has come.

But concerning the second appearance of Christ, what does he say? ‘Awaiting’—we are waiting. So let us return to this prophetic passage from Saint Paul the Apostle: ‘For the saving grace of God has appeared to all people.’ ‘Has appeared’ denotes an appearance—that is, what we call a coming.

But it is in the past tense, because it has already taken place: ‘has appeared.’ This is Christ’s first coming. How does he describe it here? As ‘the grace of God.’ And do you know what ‘the grace of God’ means? In the first chapter of John it says, ‘The law was given through Moses, but grace came through Jesus Christ.’ It does not say that grace ‘was given,’ but that it ‘came,’ because Christ Himself is the bearer of grace. Do you see, then, that grace came? Whether I say that the coming of Christ became the cause of...

grace for the world—‘grace came through Jesus Christ,’ as John says in his first chapter—or whether I say, ‘the saving grace of God has appeared,’ it is the same thing. The expressions are synonymous. Thus, this refers to Christ’s first coming, because what was given to the world through His coming? Grace. And what is this grace? The law said, ‘You did this, and because you did it, you will be severely punished.’ But while the law condemns, Christ comes and gives grace. And grace was given to all people.

Yes, grace was given. Yet at the same time, because we have an inclination toward evil, as I said earlier, grace is ‘training us’—educating us—‘so that, having renounced ungodliness,’ we may come to reject ungodliness and worldly desires. Notice two things here: ungodliness, which concerns our relation to God, and worldly desires, which prepare a person to fall into ungodliness. Worldly desires lead a person into ungodliness, and ungodliness, in turn, drives a person toward worldly desires.

In the words of Saint John Climacus, the mother becomes the daughter. Do you understand? The mother gives birth to the daughter, and the daughter becomes a mother and gives birth to that from which she herself was born. In other words, each strengthens the other: ungodliness strengthens worldly desires, and worldly desires strengthen ungodliness. What are worldly desires? They are the pride of life—everything the world desires, everything bound up with longing and desire far from God. I will not analyze this at length, because although these are important matters, we cannot dwell too long on them. Then Saint Paul the Apostle says something extremely important. I do not know whether we shall encounter this passage again, so we must speak about it now: ‘With self-control...’

“Let us live devoutly, justly, and with self-control in this present age.” In this present age, we are to live with self-control, devotion, and justice. Notice something very beautiful and wonderful here. See how much meaning is concentrated in the word of God. When it says “devoutly”—these are adverbs—this refers to God, because devotion is directed only toward God. When it says “justly,” it refers to our relationships with other people. And when it says “with self-control,” it refers to our relationship with ourselves. So, devoutly, justly, and with self-control. This is very important.

I must therefore be attentive to my relationship with God, with my neighbor, and with myself. It is wonderfully concise. Please remember it: devoutly, justly, and with self-control. Where? “In this present age.” Why does he add “present”? Because he is pointing to the age to come. So this is how we must conduct ourselves in this present age. My beloved, did we hear that clearly? This is how we must live in this present age: devoutly, justly, and with self-control.

Awaiting. Awaiting—that is, waiting expectantly.

“The blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” Thus, “awaiting” means that we are certainly waiting for this blessed hope. Why? Because it has not yet come. It is the most blessed of hopes. And what is it? The appearing—that is, the coming—of the glory of the great God. He will therefore appear in glory: “our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” There is the Second Coming. In the same passage we find both the first and the Second Coming. Let no one protest, “But when are you going to speak to us about the Antichrist?”

The Antichrist belongs to the period immediately before Christ’s Second Coming. So we are speaking about Christ’s Second Coming, and the Antichrist will come as well. Be assured that we shall also address the subject of the Antichrist. Now notice something extremely important here. It says, “the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” Usually the word “and” joins two things of the same kind. So who is our Savior, Jesus Christ? He is the great God. Did you notice that? Who is Jesus Christ? He is our great God. Therefore Jesus Christ is God.

So, who is Jesus Christ? Yahweh. At every step we discover that Jesus Christ is Yahweh; He is the Lord. He is not a created being. But you may say that the word “and” can also join unlike things. Can we not say “figs and walnuts”? Certainly. Yet even if you understand it that way, how could there be an appearing of the great God? God is invisible. Suppose, then, that this refers to the Second Coming of God. Which God? God the Father? How could He come, since God is invisible? How, then, could I speak of an appearing? What does “appearing” mean? It means to become manifest. Therefore, the One who will appear is Christ alone. He is the great God.

For this reason, he says, the teachings of the faith which they profess—pardon me, which we profess—have now been handed down in this way: that we believe in Him who ascended into the heavens, who sits at the right hand of the Father, and who will come in glory to judge the living and the dead, and whose Kingdom shall have no end. This is why, he says, the teachings of the faith that we profess were given to us; they are also called the Creed. This article, or these articles, declares that Christ ascended into the heavens, into the Kingdom of Heaven, sat at the right hand of God the Father, and will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and that His Kingdom shall have no end.

For this reason, he says, we recite the Creed. Take care: no one can recite the Creed without believing these things. Otherwise, he is merely repeating words like a parrot, without understanding what he is saying, and that is a grave sin. We must understand the things we say, and then, of course, we shall also receive the benefit. And now, my beloved, we come to the third paragraph.

“Therefore our Lord Jesus Christ is coming from the heavens. He will come in glory at the end of this world, on the last day.” Therefore—there is that word again—our Lord Jesus Christ is coming from the heavens. How beautiful! As the book of the Apocalypse ends: “Come, Lord Jesus.” Who says this? The Bride—that is, the Church, meaning us, the faithful. We say, “Come, Lord.” I assure you that when someone enters deeply into the sorrows—the miseries, we might say—of human life, then, without being pessimistic...

without being, as we might say, a follower of Ecclesiastes—“Vanity of vanities; all is vanity”—I assure you that this present life is nothing but a valley of tears. Tell me, how many times have you laughed in your life, and how many times have you wept? There have been more tears than laughter. And, if you will, there have been more sorrows than joys, however we look at it. Those of us who live amid society—and that includes us, and me as a priest—see all these things. They are brought to us. People tell us about their joys less often. In other words, joys are fewer than sorrows—sorrow upon sorrow.

And so a person asks, “Why do I live? To live or not to live?” But not in a spirit of pessimism. I have told you before: if the Kingdom of God did not exist, if this final goal of Christianity did not exist, life would have no meaning. This is why people who are not Christians ultimately find no meaning in life. They find no meaning. And it is a terrible thing to find no meaning in life. Then you fall into pessimism and despair. But when you keep before your eyes the final goal of Christianity, the end of history, then, if you are in the Church, you say, “Come, Lord Jesus.” The Spirit says it together with you, as it says there in the Apocalypse.

The Holy Spirit comes together with the Church. He helps us in our weaknesses, groans with us, and shares our travail. “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.” He prays for us, for the Church, because the Holy Spirit abides in the Church. He remains in this present world. “I will send you another Comforter,” the Lord said, “who will remain with you unto the age.” Not unto the ages, but unto the age—meaning for as long as history endures. And what do the Church and the Holy Spirit now say, as the Church is inspired by the Holy Spirit? “Come, Lord Jesus.” And what does the Lord say? “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Yes, I am coming

quickly. This is the eschatological vision. What a beautiful verse this is! The Lord Jesus Christ is therefore coming from the heavens. He is coming; He is coming. “He will come in glory at the end of this world, on the last day.” He comes when history is finally drawing to its close. When will it end? Yes, I ask: when will it end? It will end when God judges that it should end. Do we know the day? No. It is called the Day of the Lord, the last day, the great and manifest day.

This Lord will appear within His creation in glory. All the holy angels will be with Him. When will He come? The Lord knows. When will He come? When both evil and good have reached their fullness. How can both be fulfilled at the same time? In this way: when the number of those who will be saved has been fulfilled in His Kingdom, and when evil here on earth has overflowed the cup of God. Is this not mentioned

in Deuteronomy, my beloved, when Moses speaks to the people on God’s behalf? “Do not boast that you are so virtuous and that this is why God is giving you this Promised Land.” No, he says, you are not virtuous. You are stiff-necked; your neck is unbending. And do you know what a stiff neck means? It means egotism. It is like the stubborn tool in the expression, “You are as unyielding as an adze.” Your neck is unbending: you do not bow, and you do not submit to God. That is what you are. But because the evil of the nations dwelling in the land of Canaan has reached its fullness...

God is giving you this land so that He may now punish them. Yet God had already said this to Abraham. “I will not give it to you now.” You may ask why He brought Abraham there beforehand. Ah, that belongs to God’s great plan. Let us not repeat everything; we are discussing it now in Saint Stephen’s defense. God says to Abraham, “I will not give you this land now, but I will give it to your descendants. Your people—your descendants—will serve in bondage for four hundred years.” He does not say where, or which people will enslave them. That people was the Egyptians. Why? Listen to the reason: because the cup had not yet been filled—the word “cup” is my own—that is, we might say, the full measure of the sins of the peoples dwelling there had not yet been reached.

So this brings us back to what we explained. When will Christ come? When evil has become exceedingly great upon the earth, when it can go no further, when the cup is overflowing. And do you know what will fill Heaven? The holiness of the Saints. What does one of the prayers say immediately after the consecration of the precious Gifts? We thank You for what You have given us, and it says, “for the fullness of the heavens.”

“For the fullness.” To fulfill means to fill. In other words, the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is celebrated so that the faithful may receive Holy Communion and thus fill—bring to fullness—Your Kingdom. Do you see this as well? The fullness of the Kingdom. Let me return to the first point. Do you know that we have a historical type of evil reaching its fullness? It is Sodom and Gomorrah. Nothing more could be contained; there was not even room for an hour’s delay. And what does God say? As you know, two of the angels were types of the Son and the Holy Spirit—types of the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Father, represented by the other angel, remained with Abraham.

I have explained this before. What did the two angels say to Lot? “Quickly, gather whatever you can take with you. By daybreak, the city will no longer exist.” It is a fearful thing, my beloved. No further delay is given. Why? When the men of the city saw the two angels appearing as men, they sought to commit homosexual acts with Lot’s two guests. Do you hear this? Saint Jerome therefore says the following: when the world reaches the very height of arsenokoitia—that is, homosexuality—then Christ will come.

Where does he derive this from? It is not difficult. He derives it from the historical type of Hell: Sodom and Gomorrah. What sin existed there? The well-known sin of sodomy, from which homosexuality also received that name. Homosexuality is now becoming an established order. I would never wish to comment on current affairs, but I was astonished—I shall not examine it further—by the case of that man who was homosexual and killed his colleague, Afi, the well-known case at the time. Let me say no more about it. An entire movement arose—not only in Greece, but throughout the West. Are there no other criminals? Have no others committed murder? Does this mean we must release them all? Release them all, if you wish. Why this particular case? What a strange thing! I am not saying whether he should or should not be released.

Only this: the solidarity shown by all those who rallied to his cause—Greeks, people from this country and from abroad—opens a crack, a hole, through which we can glimpse the abyss of corruption and perversion. I can understand wanting to save a human being simply because he is a human being. But why should he be released because he did this? Why? How does that follow? Then we should release everyone. I shall return to this subject. Let us release everyone from prison; let us have no prisons at all. I repeat: this reveals the abyss of sin. It reveals the perversion and corruption of that part of the world which considers itself highly civilized, and shows just how corrupt it truly is.

Corrupt to the very marrow. Tell me, then: if homosexuality today has reached such a point of shamelessness and public promotion—it is being promoted—does that tell you anything? Please tell me. Here is a sign that the end is near. Do you understand? The end is near. These are astonishing things, but at the same time they are indicators revealing the state of the world. Of course, a person of that kind understands nothing. Of course, corrupt people understand nothing. Only the faithful interpret these things; they see them and understand what they mean. Therefore, “our Lord Jesus Christ comes from Heaven. He comes in glory, near the consummation of this world, on the last day. For this world will come to an end, and this created world will be renewed once again.” He says that the world will be brought to its consummation. This world has an ending; it will reach its end. We do not hold to a cyclical interpretation of history, but to a linear one. And you know, all those who are not Christians speak of a cyclical interpretation of history: that the world has always existed, exists now, and will always exist, without beginning and without end. And so, within such a world, if we can, we say: “Greece, let me

devour you,” or, “Turkey, let me devour you, Greece,” and so on. Why? Because the world sees history as cyclical, with everything always returning to the same point. There is no beginning and no end. No. There is a beginning, and there is an end. Do not forget it: there is a consummation. History, then, is to be understood as linear, not cyclical, as though this world would exist forever. These things are very important, my beloved. “And this created world will be renewed once again.” The word “created” here means that this world, which came into being, is made new. Once again. You may say that “once again” is redundant, because “will be renewed” already means “will be made new.” So it is made new again—yes, a repetition. Never mind; it is the kind of repetition we need, because it gives us assurance. The world will indeed be made new once again. This is why Malachi says that Christ sits at the refining furnace, kindles its fire, and holds the potash with which He cleanses the world. Yes. “For corruption, theft, adultery, and every kind of sin had been poured out upon the earth.” Every kind of sin was poured upon the earth, spilled over the earth, and spread across it; and blood

was mingled with blood throughout the world—blood upon blood. “Therefore, so that this wondrous dwelling place may not remain filled with lawlessness, this world passes away, so that the better world may be revealed.” For this reason, so that this wondrous dwelling place may not remain—and I shall return next time to explain this “wondrous dwelling place,” because we must not pass over it carelessly—filled to overflowing with lawlessness, this world passes away

so that the better one may be revealed. Revealed—yes, that is what it says here: that the better one may be revealed. Ah, the better one. It is clear. Hence the fire, and hence the potash. Who, then, sits at the refining furnace? The Lord Almighty. And who will bring about the renewal? The Lord Almighty—that is, Jesus Christ. He will renew this world, which has now grown old and into which corruption entered because sin entered.

Pay attention! Pay attention: no one else could have done this except the One who created the world.

Who created it? God the Word (Logos). God the Word, who created the world. Does not John the Evangelist say, “Through whom”—that is, through Jesus Christ—“all things were made, and without Him not one thing was made that has been made”? Of everything that exists, nothing was made apart from Jesus Christ. Christ, who later became incarnate. Do you hear? “Not one thing was made.” Nothing at all—not a single created thing—was made apart from Christ. Therefore, the One who made this universe, which has grown old—grown old amid lawlessness and sins—now comes with fire and potash, to use a human image.

He makes all things new. But it is this fire that will make them new. That is the point of greatest interest. God willing, my beloved, may we live until next Monday...

Ότι ο Χριστός δεν είναι ο Υιός του Θεού με την έννοια ομοούσιος, αλλά ότι είναι κτίσμα. Είναι Υιός του Θεού όπως είμεθα και εμείς οι υιοί του Θεού. Αυτό είναι η μεγάλη τους βλασφημία, η μεγάλη ύβρις, είναι Αρειανισμός. Τι άλλο περισσότερο έλεγε ο Άρειος; Ο Άρειος έλεγε ότι ο Υιός, δηλαδή ο Ιησούς Χριστός, είναι κτίσμα. Αυτό λέγουν και οι χιλιαστές, η φοβεροτέρα αίρεση που ενεφανίστηκε χρονολογικά πρώτη από τις μεγάλες τουλάχιστον αιρέσεις. Συνεπώς, είναι αυτός που θα έρθει στο ναό του, είναι ο Κύριος και θα έρθει στο δικό του ναό. Και το «Κύριος» να έλειπε, και μόνο γιατί λέει «στο ναό αυτού», δικός του ναός, τίνος ναός είναι;

Και εξής και τα εξής της προφητείας. «Εὐθὺς ὁ Σωτήρ», φησίν, «αὐτός». Και τότε θα πει, λέγει, αυτός ο Σωτήρ. Ποιος Σωτήρ;
