Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s fifteenth catechesis explains the Creed’s confession that Christ will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. The triumphal entry into Jerusalem prefigures the faithful of every generation welcoming the returning King with the angels and proclaiming, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Entry into God’s Kingdom requires the narrow way of ascetic struggle, patience, forgiveness, and submission to God, through whom authentic freedom is attained.

We are studying the fifteenth catechesis of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, Archbishop of Jerusalem, in which he explains the Creed to his catechumens, particularly the article: “And He shall come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His Kingdom shall have no end,” and also the teaching concerning the Antichrist. After the introduction we gave last time, we began the first paragraph but did not finish it. So I shall continue with that first paragraph. I am somewhere around the middle of it—at line 35, for those of you who have the book and wish to follow along.
There he says that everything in Christ is twofold—or almost everything. We saw that Christ’s birth is twofold. There is His birth from God: God the Father begets the Son, and the Son is without a mother. Then He is born as man from the Theotokos and, according to His human nature, is without a father, and so forth. Thus, almost everything is twofold. He came once, and He will come a second time. At His First Coming, He endured the Cross, despising its shame.
At the Second Coming, He comes escorted by hosts of angels and glorified by them. This too is twofold: He came, and He will come again. If I may put it this way, we live in the interval between the two appearances of Christ. Those who lived before Christ had no such experience. They lived awaiting a first coming. They could never have imagined a Second Coming, although, as you will see later, it was present in the prophets in a hidden way—hidden, yet, when seen in the light of the New Testament,
His Second Coming was plainly and clearly foretold: both the First and the Second. Yet the light of the First was so overwhelming—the great searchlight, as it were, cast by God’s first coming to earth through the words of the prophets before He came—that it left people no opportunity to perceive His Second Coming. It is just as when a light is shone directly into our eyes: we see only what is immediately before us and nothing beyond it, nothing farther away. This does not mean that the prophets had not spoken of the Second Coming. It was the interpreters who could not perceive it.
They stood beneath the overwhelming radiance of the First Coming. Its light was so great that it gave rise to this expectation of the Messiah’s coming. And remarkably, this expectation was not confined to the Jewish or Israelite world; it was a worldwide phenomenon. Today we study what are called New Testament times—that is, the conditions prevailing in the world then, around two thousand years ago,
both shortly before and after Christ: what the world was like and what condition it was in. And to our astonishment, beloved, we observe that the ancient world was awaiting a person who would partake of both divinity and humanity. We find this expectation among the Chinese and the people of India, and among peoples who did not belong to what was then considered the known world. Because there were no means of communication, distances were immense and peoples lived in isolation. Yet today, within their myths, traditions, and expectations, we find
—often, of course, wrapped in a mythical covering—at their core an expectation: the expectation that a Messiah would come. What else do all these things express and echo? They echo the promise made by the One who Himself became man: the Son who speaks to our first-created ancestors. He condemns them, though not forever, but temporarily; and He condemns the devil forever, although He allows time for the judgment to take place at the appointed moment. The execution of that judgment remains for the Second Coming of Christ.
God had told our first-created ancestors—God the Word (Logos) had told them—that from you, the woman, would be born the One who would crush the serpent’s head, while the serpent would bite His heel, inflicting only a slight wound. This refers to Christ’s death on the Cross. Yet the Cross itself became the instrument by which the head of the serpent, the devil, was crushed. Notice something very significant: the words are not addressed to Adam but to Eve; therefore, she would bring Him forth. And how would she do so? The man begets, while the woman gives birth. The One who was to come would be born of a Virgin. That is why the words are addressed to Eve and not to Adam. Adam is the forefather: the man begets, and the woman gives birth. This first Gospel, the Protoevangelium, is astonishing. When people were scattered over the face of the earth, they carried this promise with them, though they no longer possessed the light of God’s truth. Its precious heart, its deeply longed-for message, remained: amid all the sufferings endured by humanity, there would come One who
would save the human race. They certainly surrounded this truth with a great deal of myth, but its core always remained the same. Christ, then, came at His First Coming. Now Saint Cyril speaks of His Second Coming. We occupy the privileged position of living between the two Comings: we possess the experience of the First and await the Second Coming. The world at that time was therefore seeking the Messiah. Keep that word “seeking” in mind, for a little later we shall examine a prophecy of Malachi—and above all, this was true of the people of Israel. We should also note that only among the Jews did the expectation of the Messiah remain free of mythical coverings. Only there. This was because, through revelation, the prophets—and Moses is a prophet—described the events of Genesis, while God, the Spirit of God, placed words in the mouths of the prophets for them to proclaim to the people and have recorded. It was truth in its purity, an astonishing truth. When we read the prophets today with the events before us, we are amazed. Therefore, I shall say it for the third time: we live
in the privileged position of possessing the experience of Christ’s First Coming while awaiting the Second Coming. Here, then, Saint Cyril says that at His First Coming Christ endured the Cross and despised the shame of the Cross. At the Second, at His Second Coming, He comes not in humiliation but escorted and glorified by hosts of angels. He will come in glory. He Himself said that He would come with the holy angels. This is stated in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew, where He says that He comes in glory.
It will not be merely some of the angels; the entire angelic world will be present, because the angels too will stand at the judgment—judged, yet without being put on trial. In other words, it will be a universal judgment, not only of humanity but also of the angelic world. Those angels who remained in the glory of God, in obedience to God and in faithfulness to God, will be vindicated. Yes, even the angels had to believe. The angels did not know that God is Trinitarian; they learned this for the first time when the Son became incarnate. Only then did they learn it. This is the mystery kept silent through eternal ages, as the Apostle Paul says. That God is Trinitarian is God’s final revelation.
They believed. They too will be judged, but they will immediately be vindicated. And not only will they be vindicated; they themselves will also come in glory. Thus, they are judged without being put on trial. The demons, however—the fallen angels—will be judged and condemned. It is therefore a universal judgment, encompassing the entire spiritual, or more precisely rational, creation: both the angels, who belong to the spiritual world, and humanity. Saint Cyril says: “We await not only the First Coming, but also the Second.” We do not stop at Christ’s First Coming; we also await His Second Coming. This is what I told you last time, and I shall say it again. A Christian who believes in Christ—that is, who believes in His First Coming and that He is the incarnate Son of God—but does not believe in Christ’s Second Coming should not call himself a Christian. Take heed. I insist on this because I know that many of our Christians are uninformed and do not even suspect that Christ will come again. Take heed; I emphasize it: Christ is coming again. This is why Saint Cyril says that we “await the Second”—that is, the Second Coming.
This is what we say in the Creed: “And He shall come again in glory.” He comes again in glory, no longer in humility, “to judge the living and the dead.” No one can call himself a Christian—much less an Orthodox Christian—and reject Christ’s Second Coming. It is a strange thing. Saint Cyril says: “At the First Coming we said, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’ At the Second we shall say the same again. Going with the angels to meet the Master and worshipping Him, we shall say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’” At that time we said, “Blessed is He who comes.” When was that?
It was when the people realized who Jesus Christ was. You know that the crowd in Jerusalem had heard of the miracle of Lazarus being raised from the dead. It happened in Bethany, not Bithynia—Bethany. Bithynia is a province in Asia Minor. Bethany was a small village.
It was a village-sized settlement very near Jerusalem, only two or three kilometers away, to the east of the city. Many people had gone there to console Lazarus’s sisters, and so they became eyewitnesses to his being raised from the dead. Listen: eyewitnesses! It is astonishing. He had been dead for four days.
These people, now eyewitnesses to the event, came to Jerusalem and said that Jesus had raised a man who had been dead for four days. His fame flashed throughout the city like lightning. The people were filled with enthusiasm, just as they had once been over David after Goliath was defeated. They said, “Saul the king has slain his thousands, but David, the young shepherd, his tens of thousands.” The people danced in the streets, scattered flowers, and spread their garments to welcome David. But David is here a type—a foreshadowing—of Jesus Christ. At last another Goliath had been defeated: the Goliath called death. And who defeated death? Not David. David was merely a type of Jesus Christ, and David himself died. Now, however, the people of Jerusalem come and cry, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” You are the One who comes; blessed are You, because You come in the name of the Lord. The people spread their garments on the ground and cast down what we might call flowers—branches—to give the Lord a triumphal entry. That was His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the first and the last.
What we celebrate on Palm Sunday is a type—a foreshadowing—of the welcome that will be given to the glorious King, Christ, at His Second Coming. Saint Cyril now says: “Then we said, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’” We shall say it once more. This time we shall say it together with the angels. This is exceedingly beautiful, beloved. Take heed: the faithful await Christ with deep longing. The verb “await” expresses longing—the longing for Christ to come. The faithful will not be afraid.
The unbelievers and the ungodly will be afraid. But the faithful will be ready to say, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Notice that the resurrection of the dead will take place first, and Christ will appear afterward. He cannot appear before the dead have been raised. We shall speak of this here and examine it. We also spoke about the resurrection of the dead when discussing Christ’s Resurrection, but how could this meeting take place unless the dead had first been raised? Thus all generations will be united: from the generation living in Christ’s time, which cried through the streets of Jerusalem, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord,” through all the ages, including all who believed and said,
“Lord Jesus, come,” as the Apocalypse concludes, down to the generation living at that very moment. Those still alive will be changed from corruption to incorruption and from mortality to immortality, and everyone will say with one voice, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Now one observation. Christ said to the Jews: “You will perish. You will not see My favor.” He expressed it this way: “You shall not see My face.” Which face? Notice that Christ said this on the very day of His triumphal reception.
He said it to the Pharisees, the scribes, and the priests—to those malicious people who refused to accept Christ. The holy Evangelist John records that when evening came and the day had ended, Jesus departed for the Mount of Olives. Very early the next morning, He returned to the Temple and preached. What did He mean by saying, “From now on, you shall not see My face”? He did not mean this physical face—the eyes, nose, and ears. He meant, “You shall not see My favor.” This is what we mean when we say that someone will not “see the face of God”: he will not experience God’s favor. And when will that be? Unless you say—
“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” And this was reserved not so much for the days of Pentecost, some fifty days later—that is, very soon afterward—as for the course of the centuries. It meant: “You, Israel, you people of Israel, will not see My face—that is, you will not see the favor of Me, your God, within history—unless you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’” And that means accepting My divine and human nature. If you do not accept that I am the incarnate Son of God, do not expect favor.
Someone else will take hold of you, and that someone else will be the Antichrist. And the tragedy is this—we are witnesses to history; we are living at the end of the second millennium, my dear friends, and we are witnesses: for twenty centuries many among this people have not believed, and, as prophecy again tells us, the Antichrist will arise. That is the tragedy of unbelief. And as for what the Lord said, “You will not see My face unless you accept Me”—indeed, those who do not accept Him will not see His face. Evils devised against humanity will fall back upon those who devise them. Historically, of course, they will fall upon them, but then...
the curtain of history will fall. That is why I said they would fall within history; after that, they will fall in the life to come, into eternal Hell, which is dreadful. A few will believe when the two prophets come to reconcile the father—or rather, the parents, the fathers—with the children. Not the children with the fathers, but the fathers with the children. That distinction matters. But I will not dwell on it, because it is another subject. We shall come to it in due course, when we reach the subject of the Antichrist. How does this happen? You said, “Blessed is He who comes,” which means, “I believe.” This is what we too shall say, Saint Cyril tells us. He comes not to be judged again, but to judge those who judged Him. He will not come to stand trial once more; He who was judged will come to judge. “He who formerly remained silent while being judged,” Saint Cyril says, “will remind that lawless people of the daring deeds they committed at the Cross: ‘These things you did, and I kept silent.’ At that time He came according to the divine economy, teaching mankind by persuasion; but then He will reign even by necessity, whether they wish it or not.” Here he says that the Savior is coming no longer to be judged,
but to judge—to judge those who judged Him. Please pay attention. Saint Justin Popovich has a beautiful saying, a truly beautiful saying: “Human beings condemned God to death.” It is not only the Jews; we shall see this a little further on, throughout the centuries.
Human beings condemned God to death, and God condemns them to immortality. Do you know what it means to want to die and yet be unable to—to be in Hell, having received your human body again, longing to become nothing, yet unable to do so? My dear friends, once we have come into existence, we shall never, ever, ever return to nonexistence. Let us firmly grasp this. It is therefore tragic for a human being to condemn his God, and still more tragic that, as punishment, God should condemn that person to deathlessness, to immortality. Here I would like to tell you something more. Who are those who judged Christ? Someone may say, very narrowly and small-mindedly, “Why, those Jews of old.” And many times we also hear those Good Friday carols.
Even now, in the countryside and the provinces, people sing those Good Friday carols about “the lawless Jews” who made the nails. They supposedly passed by a Gypsy and ordered them from him—as though there were Gypsies there at that time. It is all confused folklore. They ordered the nails, including, they say, the main one that would be driven into His heart, and the Gypsy made them an even larger nail. My dear friends, it is not simply those Jews of old. For in the first chapter of the Apocalypse, John the Evangelist says: “Then they shall look upon Him whom they pierced, and they shall mourn.” This is a very beautiful continuation. Then, he says, they will see—“they shall look”—and begin to beat their breasts. “They shall mourn!”
To mourn in this sense means to beat one’s breast, to cry aloud, to strike oneself, and to tear one’s hair, as someone does when mourning without restraint. Why? Because “they shall look upon Him whom they pierced”; they will see the One whom they thrust through with a spear. And who are those who pierced Him? If you take it strictly and literally, how many could there have been? One man pierced Him. Who was he? A soldier, testing whether the Lord had died. And how many others crucified Him? Two, three, five soldiers—six, seven, ten. They crucified the Lord. Are these the ones who will be judged? No. Remarkably, the centurion came to believe in Christ.
And he is a martyr, no less. Listen: the centurion who crucified Christ is also a martyr of our Church. His pagan religion had no expectation—or rather, it did not have the prophecies that might have warned him. He was carrying out his duty. Then who are those who will begin beating their breasts when they see the One whom they pierced? Who are those whom Christ will now condemn because they condemned Him? Can you imagine? We too shall be among them if we are not careful. The Apostle Paul says to the Philippians: “I told you these things when I was there, and now I write them to you.”
“As I write, I weep over the enemies of the Cross of Christ.” These, he says, are those who became enemies of the Cross of Christ. He is not writing to the Hebrews; he is writing to the Philippians. Philippi is a Greek city, and he is not speaking of Jews who believed or Jews who did not believe. “Their god is their belly.” Who are these people who have made their belly their god? Clearly, he is speaking here about Christians. They are people who stand as enemies of the Cross of Christ—enemies of the Cross of Christ. They are those whom the Apostle Paul elsewhere describes as crucifying the Son of God again.
They crucify the Son of God all over again. How? By turning Christianity into eating and drinking. Many are enemies of the Cross of Christ: those who accept a Gospel without the Cross, without ascesis, without ascetic discipline. They imagine that Christianity means prosperity, that Christianity means worldly culture—that it exists to give us food and drink. My dear friends, I have said this many times. It does no harm to say it again: those who have not heard me will hear it, and those who have heard it will be strengthened. For we cannot turn Christianity either into a political party or into worldly culture.
A political party promises that we shall have food to eat. A culture promises something for the present life: how to make our lives happy, how to build an earthly paradise—but a material paradise. The material paradise has departed from the earth, and now ascesis, ascetic discipline, takes its place. The Lord told us that we shall enter the Kingdom of God by the narrow way and through the narrow gate. Those who say that Christianity is a means of creating culture or politics are opening a broad highway and a wide gate. And what does the Lord say? Those who walk the broad road and pass through the wide gate are led to destruction. He says this plainly:
“How narrow is the gate and afflicted the way that leads to life!” What force there is in the exclamation mark in the sacred text! How narrow and afflicted—how constricted—is the road, the way of life, by which a person enters into life. Do you see? This means ascetic struggles; it means the Cross. Therefore, those who want a spacious and comfortable Christianity, in the materialistic sense, are enemies of the Cross of Christ. Might we, then, also be found among those who will be regarded as having pierced Christ, as having thrust the spear into Him? Thank you! Might we indeed!
My dear friends, I am giving you the precise interpretation of these things. Pay attention: this is our exact ecclesial interpretation. The Fathers—or rather, let me put it as the Fathers do—ask: “Which Saints entered the Kingdom of God in comfort?” Which Saints? Who entered the Kingdom of God with ease—eating and drinking, going to church, and receiving Holy Communion once or twice a year? That is not Christianity. I have told you this many times. We shall pass through tribulations and hardships, often precisely because we are faithful. Is this not where the great value lies? And if the hardships we suffer are not because of our faith, we shall show patient endurance.
We shall show forbearance toward those who may wrong us, and we shall forgive our enemies. This is how one enters the Kingdom of God. Narrow and afflicted is the road that leads to life, to eternal life, to the Kingdom of God. Let us not try to build paradises here on earth. That is heresy.
“He who formerly remained silent while being judged”—the One who, the first time, kept silent when He was on trial—“will remind,” Saint Cyril says, “the lawless of the daring deeds they committed at the Cross.” They truly committed audacious deeds; that people dared to do what should never have been dared. You took your God and crucified Him. You did not believe He was God? Very well. You did not believe He was God made man? Very well. The Son of God forgives you. For Christ said, “Whoever stumbles over Me may be forgiven.” You could never have imagined that God had become man. All right, you had the prophets; nevertheless, you are forgiven. But what evil did I do that you should crucify Me?
What evil—consider it simply on the human level—what evil did I do that you should crucify Me? A beautiful troparion from Holy Week says: “I raised your dead; I healed your sick; I gave light to your blind; I fed your hungry. How have I wronged you, Israel? Do you crucify your Benefactor?” Consider it from this perspective as well. This is why that people truly dared the unthinkable—things no human being with even the least understanding should ever have dared to do. But they were ruled by passion. “These things you did, and I kept silent.” This, my dear friends, is from Psalm 49, verse 21: “These things you did, and I kept silent.” I did not speak.
And then we have that striking line: “But Jesus remained silent.” Now, however, God will not remain silent. When He came then, He came “according to the divine economy, teaching mankind by persuasion.” He came to persuade and teach human beings through reason and through the prophets. But now, whether you like it or not, I shall reign over you. There is that strange parable Christ tells about a man who went away into a far country and then returned. Some had rebelled after he left, and now, the parable says: “Bring them here and slay them before me.” This means nothing other than those who...
are condemned to eternal death. Whether you wish it or not, God will reign. Why? Because He is God. Do not misunderstand the meaning of freedom. I shall say it once more, because I can foresee what is in some hearts: “But what about freedom?” Freedom is not what we imagine it to be. Freedom means that I am able to do evil, but doing so is not profitable for me. As the Apostle Paul says three times in his First Epistle to the Corinthians: “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable.” Everything is permitted to me, but not everything is beneficial. Let us not forget, then, that freedom is relative. God alone is the absolute Lord. But you may say, “Then I would like to be free.”
You are making a god out of freedom. Freedom is an abstract concept. If you accept and worship your God, then you will be free—both now and always, unto the ages of ages. This is the true meaning of freedom. I mention this only in passing. And now, my dear friends, I come to the second paragraph. “Concerning these two Comings,” Saint Cyril says, “the Prophet Malachi declares: ‘And suddenly the Lord whom you seek shall come to His temple.’” Behold, one Coming. And again, concerning the Second Coming, he says: “And the Angel of the Covenant, whom you seek. Behold, the Lord Almighty comes; and who shall endure the day of His coming?”
“Or who shall stand when He appears? For He comes like a refiner’s fire and like the cleansing herb of launderers, and He shall sit refining and purifying.” These words, my dear friends, are from the Prophet Malachi, chapter three, verses one through three. It is a most beautiful and most important prophecy. We shall analyze it. But first Saint Cyril says: “Concerning these two Comings, the Prophet Malachi declares.” What does he say? “And suddenly the Lord shall come to His temple.” And suddenly...
the Lord will come to His own Temple, the One whom you seek; and the Angel of the Covenant, the Messenger of the Covenant, whom you seek. Saint Cyril now comments: here is the one Coming, that is, the First Coming. Behold, the Lord Almighty is coming. And who can endure that day? Who can withstand that day of His Second Coming, that is, of His entrance? What entrance this means, we shall see. Or who can remain standing—“who shall stand”—when He appears? Who can see Him and remain standing? No one. For He will enter creation like the fire of a furnace and like caustic potash that washes and cleanses. And He will sit refining and purifying; He will sit, tending the fire in the furnace and cleansing with potash. Let me also explain the word “poa,” which is also pronounced “poia.” “Poia,” with a lowercase pi and iota, means lye: the substance obtained from ashes which housewives used in former times.
They took lye from the ashes and used it to wash the laundry. And it is well known that laundry is cleaned very thoroughly this way, because ash-water is used, containing lye from wood ash, of course. In other words, it is potash. I deliberately called it caustic. Caustic potash is another kind, which cleans what ordinary lye cannot. It is the caustic potash used to clean sinks. It cleans thoroughly; on ships they often use this caustic potash to remove grease and grime that cannot be cleaned in any other way. Please keep this image in mind just as I have described it, and let us now examine this wondrous prophecy. To begin with, the prophecy of...
Malachi is twofold. It refers to Christ’s First Coming and to Christ’s Second Coming. Let me give you another twofold prophecy. It is from the Prophet Joel, and the Apostle Peter uses it in connection with another event. There too we find two things; it is again a twofold prophecy. Just do not become confused. I will quickly tell you Joel’s prophecy. It is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. On the day of Pentecost, when the descent of the Holy Spirit took place, the Apostle Peter said to the people: “Why are you astonished at what you see? This was written by the Prophet Joel.” And what was written by the Prophet Joel? Two things.
What would happen immediately after Christ’s First Coming, and what would happen shortly before Christ’s Second Coming. Take care: immediately after the First, and shortly before the Second. But the prophets customarily place these things together. This is a way of veiling them, for many reasons. I have explained those reasons to you before, so I will not repeat now why the prophets mingle these events together. First of all, they do so because of the devil, so that the devil cannot understand. And so on and so forth. And also—pay attention—so that faith may be introduced. It is astonishing. Listen carefully to what the Apostle Peter says. He interprets the prophecy.
Holy Scripture interprets Holy Scripture. This is an authoritative interpretation. What does the Apostle Peter say? “Have you not read in Joel? It is written: In the last days I will pour out My Holy Spirit upon My servants and My handmaids, and they shall prophesy,” and so forth. Which are these last days? Since there are two Comings of Christ, there are also two sets of last days. Wherever we speak of a manifestation of God, we have last days. The last days associated with the First Coming include the descent of the Holy Spirit: “I will pour out My Holy Spirit,” He says, and so forth. Thus...
the last days of the First Coming included, as their sign, the descent of the Holy Spirit. Immediately connected with this, in the same way that Malachi joins the events together here, the Prophet says: “And then the sun and the moon shall be darkened.” And who can endure that great and manifest day of the Lord? What does this refer to? He is speaking of the other last days, those of Christ’s Second Coming. How do we know this? We also know it from the Gospels. Christ Himself said it, and He speaks in the same manner, joining together the two prophecies concerning the two sets of last days. Take, for example, the destruction of Jerusalem.
That belongs to the first last days, soon after the death of the Lord and His Resurrection. I say “soon”: the Lord said it would occur one generation later. It happened in AD 70, when the city was destroyed. Yet this was also a type of the other last days. And then He says, “immediately.” Pay attention to this word “immediately.” This “immediately” spans two thousand years. Does that not astonish you? If only we had time—time, time, time! We could spend hours on a single word. These things are so important. The sun and the moon, then, are to be darkened. Christ Himself said this. A careless student might conclude that this darkening of the sun and moon—that is, these celestial phenomena—is connected with Jerusalem.
They are not connected with Jerusalem; they are connected with the second last days, those of Christ’s Second Coming. In the same way, the Prophet here joins the two Comings and describes the distinctive qualities of each. This is the important point. What characterizes the First Coming? He comes as the Angel of the Covenant. What characterizes the Second Coming? He comes as the Lord Almighty, as fire. That is the general outline.
Pay attention, for it is worth examining the prophecy word by word. “And suddenly the Lord shall come to His Temple.” The Lord will suddenly come to His own Temple. Do you know what this word “suddenly” means? Although this event was written beforehand—and we shall also examine Daniel’s prophecy of the seventy weeks, with the chronological landmarks established by Daniel himself, or rather by the Spirit of God, showing where the reckoning begins and so forth—the precise time is not fixed, though it is nevertheless known in a general way.
A prophecy is always obscure. When it is fulfilled, then it becomes clear. In the same way, 666 is obscure at present. It will become perfectly clear when the Antichrist comes—perfectly clear. Just as easily as we now understand the events of Christ’s First Coming, so then shall we understand the events being fulfilled before our eyes. This may happen even tomorrow; we do not know. Pay attention, then: this word “suddenly” describes how the event appeared to human beings. They knew that the Messiah would come, but when? For them, therefore, it happened “suddenly.” Then there is the word, “He shall come.” How are we to understand it? “He shall come,” it says, from the verb “to come.”
He will come. If we were interpreting the works of Plato, we would understand this in a spiritual sense. Even if we were rabbis interpreting Holy Scripture wherever it speaks about God, we would naturally take such expressions in a spiritual sense. How does God come? We say, “God will come to punish you.” But how does He come? We must examine what this coming means. Does He come on foot? God has no feet. How, then, does He come? Here is the astonishing thing: He came on foot. “He shall come” was fulfilled literally. I want you to understand the difference between a spiritual interpretation, an allegorical interpretation, and a literal interpretation—for the literal meaning is the historical meaning.
If we remove the historical interpretation from Holy Scripture, nothing remains of Holy Scripture. We go so far as to deny the person of Jesus Christ as the God-Man. So how was this phrase, “He shall come,” fulfilled? How could those who interpreted the word of God in the prophets ever have imagined that He would come, as we have said, just as human beings do—on foot? In other words, the Son of God became man. And where did He come? “The Lord shall come to His Temple”—to His own Temple. Remember when Christ’s brothers—the children of Joseph, not children of the Theotokos, for the Theotokos is Ever-Virgin and gave birth only once...
in virginity, to Jesus Christ. The Theotokos had no other children, despite the blasphemies of the heretics. His brothers, then, said to Him: “We are going up to the city, to Jerusalem. Will You not come?” Having seen some of their brother’s miracles, they thought the situation could be turned to their advantage. Pay attention: to their advantage. So they said to Him: “Come now; why are You hiding here? Come with us to the city, so that people may see that You work miracles,” and so forth. “My time,” He said, “has not yet come. Your time is always ready.” And He did not go up to Jerusalem with them. But after they had left, when the feast was halfway through...
for the feast lasted a week, and it was now about midway through—Jesus also went up. Where did He go? He went to the Temple. The words “went up” are used both because Jerusalem is geographically higher and because the Temple itself stood above the city, on a hill. Jesus went up and came there, and He cried out: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” So Jesus went there. How did He go? On foot. We are shaken to the depths, my beloved, when we perceive how the prophets prophesy and how, at many points, they speak realistically—that is, historically, not allegorically.
“The Lord shall come to His Temple.” This, then, is what “He shall come” means: He will come on foot. But the prophecy says, “to His Temple.” Whose Temple is it? Remember what He said to the Theotokos when He was twelve years old: “Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s house? What does “temple” mean? Do you know? It means a dwelling. Indeed, the more ancient form of the word is “neos,” spelled with epsilon. Do you know what that means? A dwelling. Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s dwelling? For where does a child live?
With his father. Whose Temple, then—whose dwelling—was it? It was the dwelling of Jesus Christ. But notice something: “He shall come to His Temple.” “His” means His own Temple, His own house. And He is called “Lord.” Ah, then what is the One who comes? He is the Lord. How did the rabbis interpret this? Every rabbi interpreting the prophets would understand the word “Lord” in this passage as Yahweh: the Lord God, Yahweh. But who came to His Temple? Jesus. Therefore, who is Jesus? He is Yahweh—that is, God. How did He come on foot? In His human nature. Who, then, is the One who came on foot? The Lord...
Yahweh, God. Here, then, we see that the One who was to come would be the God-Man. Do you see it? I am not forcing the text; the text itself compels us. We are not violating the text at all; the text itself summons us to this conclusion. And as the text summons us, my beloved, we are shaken to the depths. Let no one remain unbelieving after all that the Word of God reveals. I continue: “whom you seek.” Yes, because all the people and the rabbis were seeking this Messiah. They knew nothing more, because they could not understand the prophets more deeply.
They could not decipher the prophets. Had they possessed humility, however, things would have been different. How, then, did the disciples come to believe? The disciples searched the Scriptures. Do not imagine that because they were fishermen, they did not read. Do not imagine that they were simple fools whom the Lord happened to gather. Do not think that. Consider Nathanael’s resistance when Philip said to him: “Come and see Jesus of Nazareth, whom we have found—the Messiah.” “Who?” he replied. “Who? Can any prophet come from Nazareth? Have you ever heard of such a thing?” Philip answered, “The One of whom Moses and the prophets wrote”—that is, the One for whom we have been searching. The disciples searched the Scriptures. Remember John and Andrew. They were disciples of John. They were not simple fools; they were not simple fools.
They studied the Scriptures. Why did the rulers not believe? Because they searched in a different way, interpreting in a different way. What does that mean? They were looking through lenses, through the spectacles of the passions, and so they could not see, whereas the disciples had pure hearts. The prophecies cannot be understood without a pure heart. My beloved, let us continue: “whom you seek.” Everyone was seeking Him, though they knew nothing more. “And the Angel of the Covenant, whom you seek.” He is the Angel of the Covenant. Pay attention: the Messenger of the Covenant. Which Covenant? The Covenant was made at Sinai. There are three Covenants, as I tell you in our study of Acts and as Saint Stephen the Protomartyr says in his defense. The first is the Covenant with Abraham, the Covenant of Circumcision, whose content is faith. The second Covenant is the Covenant of the Law and Sacrifices. The third Covenant is the blood of Christ upon the Cross—and once again, its content is faith. This is very important. So when the passage says, “the Angel of the Covenant, whom you seek,” it means: you seek Him, but I, the Prophet, will tell you who He is. He is the Angel of Great Counsel, who appeared to Moses there in the Burning Bush. This Angel, this Messenger, is the Angel of Great Counsel.
Of which Covenant? You do not yet have the New Covenant. He is the Angel of the New Covenant. But you may ask, “Do the prophets really write about these things?” Yes, because their vision is not restricted; they see the whole horizon. They write about the New Testament. Is this the only passage about the New Testament? Are there not many passages that speak about the New Testament? It is astonishing. Yes, indeed, it is astonishing. Here Saint Cyril says: behold the First Coming. How, then, does He come? He comes as the Angel of the Covenant. He comes to His Temple. Yet He is man, because He walks there on His own feet, and at the same time He is the Lord.

«προσδοκώμεν». Είναι εκείνο που λέμε εις το Σύμβολον της Πίστεως: «Και πάλιν ερχόμενον μετά δόξης». Πάλιν ερχόμενον μετά δόξης, όμως, όχι ταπεινά, «κρίναι ζώντας και νεκρούς». Δεν μπορεί κανείς να λέγεται χριστιανός, και δη ορθόδοξος, και να μην δέχεται τη Δευτέρα του Χριστού Παρουσία. Είναι περίεργο. «Και εν μεν τη προτέρα είπομεν· Ευλογημένος ο ερχόμενος εν ονόματι Κυρίου· και εν τη Δευτέρα ερούμεν πάλιν το αυτό, μετά αγγέλων συναντήσαντες τω Δεσπότη, προσκυνούντες είπωμεν· Ευλογημένος ο ερχόμενος εν ονόματι Κυρίου». Τότε είπαμε «Ευλογημένος ο ερχόμενος». Πότε;
«Ὁ πρότερον ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαι σιωπήσας», εκείνος που την πρώτη φορά, όταν εκρίνετο, σιωπούσε, «ὑπομιμνήσκων», λέγει, «τοῖς παρανόμοις τὰ τολμηρὰ ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ πεποιηκόσι». Πράγματι τολμηρά εποίησαν, έκανε εκείνος ο λαός τολμηρά. Επήρατε τον Θεό σας και τον σταυρώσατε. Δεν πιστέψατε ότι είναι ο Θεός; Δεν πειράζει. Ο Θεός που έγινε άνθρωπος; Δεν πειράζει. Σας συγχωρεί ο Υιός του Θεού. Γιατί είπε ο Χριστός: «Όποιος δη σκανδαλιστεί σε μένα έχει συγχώρηση». Γιατί δεν θα μπορούσατε ποτέ να φανταστείτε ότι ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος. Εντάξει, έχετε τους προφήτες, τέλος πάντων είστε συγχωρημένοι. Αλλά τι κακό εποίησα για να με σταυρώσετε;
ρεαλιστικά, δηλαδή ιστορικά, όχι αλληγορικά. «Ήξει εις τον ναόν αυτού Κύριος». Αυτό, λοιπόν, ως προς το «ήξει»: θα έρθει με τα πόδια του. Αλλά λέγει «εις τον ναόν αυτού». Ποιος είναι; Θυμηθείτε, δωδεκαετής, τι είπε εις την Θεοτόκον: «Δεν ξέρατε ότι εν τοις του Πατρός μου δει είναι με;» Δεν ξέρατε ότι πρέπει να βρίσκομαι εις τον οίκον του Πατρός μου; Τι θα πει ναός; Ξέρετε τι θα πει ναός; Θα πει κατοικία. Και μάλιστα ο αρχαιότερος τύπος είναι νεός. Ο νεός, το νε με έψιλον. Ξέρετε τι θα πει αυτό; Κατοικία. Ότι δεν ξέρατε ότι πρέπει να είμαι στην κατοικία του Πατέρα μου; Διότι πού μένει το παιδί;
