Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s fifteenth catechesis completes his teaching on the Son by explaining the Creed’s proclamation that Christ will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. Christ’s return, the resurrection, and the renewal of the universe are central, while the Antichrist is only a temporary attempt to obstruct the saving work already secured through the Cross. Saint Cyril contrasts Christ’s first coming in humility and suffering with his second coming in divine glory, while affirming that the incarnate Son is one person with two natures.

Beloved, we are now in the fifteenth catechesis of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, who wrote this wonderful, thoroughly Orthodox, and exceptionally detailed course of catechesis, which, fortunately, has survived in its entirety. I say this for everyone who is joining us for the first time today, Monday. What is the title of this catechesis—that is, of the teaching he delivered, and to whom did he deliver it? To the catechumens. In those days people were not baptized immediately, because Christianity encountered them as adults. And for some years, before infant Baptism became established, this preliminary instruction was given.
In other words, it was catechesis for those who were preparing to become members of the Church, the prospective members of the Church. The catechumens received deliberate and systematic instruction, with all the necessary conditions in place. As we have said, it was like going to school to learn a particular subject. Here, likewise, the catechumens would come to hear the content of their faith, so that they might freely embrace it, then be baptized and have their names entered in the registers.
Here I am also using words from the Church’s sacred text: in the Church’s books, in the Church’s rolls.
Saint Cyril chose the method of interpreting and unfolding the Creed in its breadth, depth, and height. It is the familiar Creed, although these catecheses were delivered around the year 350.
This was twenty-five years after the Creed of Nicaea. I should tell you, of course, that the Creed had not been completed in 325 at the First Ecumenical Council. What came to bear that name and is now called the Creed of Nicaea is our familiar Creed: “I believe in one God,” and so forth. It was completed at the subsequent...
councils—the Ecumenical Councils. Note this as well.
Although it was then gradually becoming established, creeds of this kind already existed; that is, they predated it. In order to confront the heretics, the Orthodox Churches had already composed—constructed, we might say—creeds of faith. Thus, we have the Jerusalem Creed, which is almost identical to the Creed of Nicaea.
We also have the so-called Athanasian Creed and other creeds that once existed. Some of these survive today and are, we might say, relics—historical monuments by now—while others no longer exist, however you wish to put it. In any event, the Creed that has survived is the one the faithful now possess.
It was established as the official Creed, and it is our familiar Creed of Nicaea: “I believe in one God,” and so forth. Saint Cyril, therefore, bases and develops his catecheses upon the Creed.
Of course, we are now in our fourth year. I repeat this for those joining us for the first time. We are already in the fourth year; in other words, we have given about ninety-seven talks. Today’s is somewhere around the ninety-seventh or ninety-eighth. There are twenty-four catecheses in all, and we are now beginning the fifteenth. We have covered everything concerning the Father and everything concerning the Son.
This fifteenth catechesis completes the teaching concerning the Son. Then, beginning with the sixteenth catechesis, we shall turn to the third Person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit. There Saint Cyril offers a magnificent wealth of points and details; he is truly remarkable. This catechesis is the last one concerning the Person of the second Person of the Holy Trinity who became man—that is, the Son—and it addresses the final article concerning the Person of Jesus Christ. Its title, then, is as follows: “For Those Preparing for Illumination.”
It is a catechesis for those preparing for illumination, those who would receive Baptism within a few days or a short time. “Delivered in Jerusalem”—that is, prepared, composed, and spoken, we might say, in Jerusalem. More precisely, these catecheses were delivered inside the Church of the Resurrection, which had already been built: the familiar Church of Christ’s Resurrection in Jerusalem, which stands to this day. Saint Cyril’s catecheses were given there, as he himself mentions in several places. The subject is: “And He shall come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, whose Kingdom shall have no end.”
This catechesis will explain this particular passage: that Christ will come in glory to judge the living and the dead, and that His Kingdom is everlasting, without end. Saint Cyril also adds what we might call a subtitle: “And concerning the Antichrist.” Thus, in this catechesis we shall also speak about the Antichrist. This is entirely natural, since the subject of the Antichrist belongs to the final events of history. The judgment that will take place—the Resurrection of the Dead, the coming of Christ, and so forth—also belongs to the Last Things. Therefore, the Antichrist comes first, followed by the judgment: the Resurrection of the Dead, the judgment, and finally the universal Last Judgment.
These two events, however, are extremely close together. Do you know how close? Pay attention and remember this, because certain strange ideas are circulating, even in Orthodox writings, though I shall not say where. The end of the Antichrist coincides directly with the beginning of Christ’s manifestation—that is, with the Second Coming. They are joined together; that is what “directly connected” means. These two events are back-to-back. The Antichrist comes to an end, and the judgment begins. Both events, as I have told you, belong to the Last Things. That is why they are called eschatological events. Do not imagine that these are prolonged events spanning centuries. Thank you.
The reign of the Antichrist—his official reign—lasts three and a half years, and when those three and a half years end, the judgment begins. You understand, then, that these events are closely compressed together—joined, as I said, directly to one another. The heading continues: “And a reading from Daniel.” Saint Cyril takes his starting point from a reading of the Prophet Daniel in order to present his teaching to the catechumens. This does not mean that he will not also draw upon a great many other passages of Holy Scripture. You will see this. He will marshal everything he can from Holy Scripture to establish what he is about to say. Which passage will he take from Daniel?
“I watched until thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated,” and what follows. And again: “I saw in the vision of the night, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came One like the Son of Man,” and what follows. He takes this passage, reads it to his catechumens, and explains it. The verses I have just quoted are, of course, found in the seventh chapter of Daniel, from verse 9 through verses 13 and 14, and so forth. We now come to the main discourse. Before doing so, however, I would like to offer a very brief introduction, because when we discussed the subjects concerning the Antichrist...
while, by the grace of God, explaining the Apocalypse of the Evangelist John some years ago—you will remember this—we were still living in an unsuspecting age, although it was not very long ago, only three years. We have now entered the third year since we completed the Apocalypse and began studying Acts. So it was three years ago. And if you take into account that the subject of the Antichrist was not at the end but appeared in chapter 13 of the Apocalypse, I would say it was roughly five years ago. At the time when we spoke about the Antichrist, there was still silence all around us on this subject. It was somewhat pioneering; nothing had yet been heard about it.
Thank you. My beloved, I sensed these things. That is why God granted us illumination to study the Book of Revelation. I also had other things in mind, which I shall not tell you now—other things as well. I wanted you to know these matters and to be prepared. That was why the Book of Revelation was chosen. I would say it was not so that you might welcome the Antichrist, but so that you might confront him—or, more broadly, as a general preparation, not necessarily for the person of the Antichrist himself. We may not live to see him. He may come in fifty, one hundred, or two hundred years; I offer these merely as examples. We do not know when he will come, because his coming is connected with Christ’s Second Coming. I tell you this once again. The time of Christ’s Second Coming is unknown—clearly unknown.
Does the Apostle Paul know when the Antichrist will come? He does not know the hour of the Second Coming. He only sets out certain points both to reassure the Thessalonians and to keep them watchfully concerned. He reassures them so that they will not be troubled about things that should not trouble them, while also preserving in them an alert concern as they look toward and await the Antichrist, so that they may maintain spiritual readiness. Our own age especially demands spiritual readiness, though the person of the Antichrist is not yet before us. He will come—God knows when. Yet the instruments of the Antichrist are already here. These are the antichrists of whom the Evangelist John speaks in his epistle.
“Many antichrists have arisen.” Today we must confront all those conditions that prepare the way for the Antichrist and will lead us toward him. When we spoke about these things in the past, there was a certain calm, at least within our Greek churches. There was nothing like what exists today: widespread anxiety, commotion, and so forth. This agitation and uproar over the claim that the Antichrist is coming arose especially from America, where Protestants became active around this subject and Protestant publications appeared—do not forget their Protestant origin. I would like to tell you that among the errors that have arisen, including errors in identifying the signs, I pray that God will intervene lest matters someday become more heated, because...
Spiritual people took one position, while other equally spiritual people took another, and now factions seem to be forming and they are beginning to insult one another. Just on Saturday evening, a pamphlet that had been circulated by a certain hieromonk came into my hands. This hieromonk, who signs his name, launches an attack against the Bishop of Florina. He abuses him terribly, without shame or remorse. “Why,” he says, “did you write such-and-such in Spitha?” There is a danger that relations among us Orthodox Christians will be damaged. It is terrible, truly terrible. Many mistakes have been made. I will mention one thing, and I beg you to pay close attention to it. One of the many mistakes that has been made is this.
The subject of the Antichrist has been treated in isolation. Books were written hastily to address this subject, concentrating on the Antichrist—that is, on chapter 13 of the Apocalypse. But, my dear friends, we cannot understand the subject of the Antichrist unless we place it within the other chapters of the Apocalypse as well. In other words, we need to know the entire book of the Apocalypse, and that is not easy. Of course, who has written a book on it? Father Charalambos Vasilopoulos has. Earlier, Father Joel Giannakopoulos also wrote about it,
but only very briefly. Bratsiotis wrote a commentary, but its level is rather advanced and not everyone can understand it. Nothing comprehensive has been written on the whole book. Who will take the trouble to write an entire book? And who will take the trouble to sit down and read it? We human beings are peculiar. We behave as we do with detective novels: as soon as we buy one, we turn to the end to see what happened. How did the detective story end? Read it from the beginning, without being impatient to discover the ending. You will reach the end in due course. Why spoil the beauty of the story? I am speaking here of a detective novel, simply as an illustration.
You turn to the end to see what happened and cast everything else aside, because only the ending interests you. The same happens here: when we read, we are interested only in the subject of the Antichrist. We must not take it in isolation. We must speak about it as a subject that, by its very nature, belongs within the whole book of the Apocalypse. And to understand the Apocalypse, we must draw upon the whole of Holy Scripture. Then, to understand Holy Scripture correctly, we must also draw upon the Fathers of the Church, who will give us the right interpretation. That is the sound and proper way to work. Everything else, forgive me, is amateurish tinkering.
It simply will not do. When we try to offer hasty solutions, we create problems and, sadly, sometimes even damage relationships. We begin insulting one another and calling the other person a traitor, because such things are indeed being said: “You are a traitor, because you are trying to lull the people by saying these things.” And the other replies, “No, you are the one stirring up the people and bringing them out into the streets.” Demonstrations have even been held over this issue. Remember the controversy concerning identity cards. If you have noticed, I said nothing about any of this. I did not speak. We are living in a situation where we do not know what we, as the Church, should do. For this reason, my dear friends, as we begin the fifteenth catechesis today, we will say nothing yet about the Antichrist.
We will come to the Antichrist, however, so that those of you who came today will not say, “Ah, he said nothing about it; I will not come again.” No, God forbid. We will first establish the wider framework, and within it we will examine the subject of the Antichrist. Besides, does the Antichrist concern us more than the coming of Christ? It is the coming of Christ that concerns us. If I keep that before me, then the antichrists will be unable to harm me. I will also be properly informed and will know how to confront the Antichrist. But if I care only about the Antichrist and not about the coming of Christ, I will go astray and will not know how to proceed. And are we not also concerned with what will become of this world?
Saint Cyril says magnificent things in this catechesis—truly magnificent things—when he speaks about the two comings of Christ, the first and the second, and also about the renewal of the whole universe. All these matters are extremely important. The knowledge of them provides the framework within which we can learn what the Antichrist is. The subject of the Antichrist is a parenthesis, only a parenthesis, within the divine plan. The divine plan is that Christ should come, that the Resurrection of the dead should take place, and that the whole universe should be renewed. This is God’s plan. At a certain point the Antichrist comes and attempts to frustrate it; hence his name, Antichrist.
He attempts to frustrate the work of Christ. He does not succeed. The Antichrist is only a man—one hundred percent human, born of a mother and father—and he acts under the power of Satan. But Satan has already been defeated through the Cross of Christ.
“He made a public spectacle of him,” says the Apostle Paul. To make a spectacle of someone means to expose him publicly. Before the angelic world—though this is invisible to us—Christ publicly exposed the fall of Satan. The entire angelic world witnessed Satan’s fall. This was, we might say, Satan’s next-to-last crushing defeat.
The final one will come when Christ returns.
Then the devil, who will have raised up the Antichrist, will be cast down. Both of them—the devil and the Antichrist, who is a man—will be cast alive into the lake of fire, as the Apocalypse says. If you remember, though it was many years ago, I once discussed here the word “alive.” How are they cast in alive? The devil is a spirit, but the Antichrist is a man. How will he be cast alive into the lake of fire? The lake of fire means Hell. Will he therefore enter Hell while still alive? Yes. Where is the mystery in this? It is what the Evangelist—pardon me, the Apostle Paul—says. It is a mystery, I tell you, a mystery. It is found in his First Epistle to the Corinthians. What is this mystery? The mystery is this:
Those who remain alive—those of us who are still living when Christ comes—will not die. The Apostle speaks in the first person plural, quite naturally, because the Second Coming of Christ could have occurred in his own days. We too speak in the first person, because the Second Coming of Christ could occur in our days. We do not know. What, then, happens? “We,” he says, “will not taste death.” This does not refer only to the faithful, but to all human beings who are alive. We will not taste death; instead, we will pass from our present state of corruption and mortality into the state of incorruption and immortality.
Therefore, since the Word of God says here that the devil—and especially the Antichrist, who concerns us at present—will be cast alive into the lake of fire, into Hell, it means that he will not taste death. He will pass directly into Hell, into eternal Hell, without tasting death. This also answers the question: will some thousand-year kingdom intervene after the Antichrist? No. Why not? For precisely this reason. I am giving you this scriptural foundation, quite apart from telling you that this is the teaching of our Church. You may even find Orthodox publications maintaining that after the Antichrist there will be a thousand-year reign.
God forbid! That position is mistaken. This is not my personal opinion; I will tell you nothing of my own. It is the position of the Church. The Church teaches that after the Antichrist comes the Last Judgment, and after the Last Judgment comes the Kingdom of God—not a thousand-year kingdom, but the eternal Kingdom of God. What, then, is this millennium? We discussed it when studying the Apocalypse. It is nothing other than the period between the two comings of Christ, or the age of the Gospel. This is what the Church teaches; I am not saying it on my own authority. Saint Andrew of Caesarea interprets it this way. The number one thousand is a round, symbolic number, not an exact figure.
It signifies a long span of time: the period between Christ’s first coming to earth and His Second Coming. This enclosed period is the thousand years, or the age of the Gospel—the time in which the Gospel goes forth and wins people for Christ. This does not mean merely that it spreads throughout the earth, but that it wins human souls. Here in Greece, the Gospel was spread by the Apostles. Yet that does not mean that the Gospel has ceased to win people. In every age the Gospel continues its work of winning souls—not simply by geographical expansion, but by bringing people to Christ—and it sends the Saints to Paradise, where they await the Resurrection of the dead and the restoration of their bodies.
Then the Last Judgment will take place, and in their bodies they will hear the words: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you.” I have therefore given you a general outline. The point—the conclusion of everything I have said by way of introduction—is that we cannot separate the subject of the Antichrist from all the other truths of our faith. We must see it within the whole teaching offered by the Church. We should therefore read—and continue reading—the entire Apocalypse, as well as the whole of Holy Scripture, because
all these books speak of these things, either directly or indirectly. You see what Saint Cyril draws upon here: Daniel. And where does Daniel belong? To the Old Testament. Yet he will speak about the coming of Christ and about the Antichrist. Do you know how clearly Daniel, writing in the Old Testament in the sixth century before Christ, speaks about the Antichrist? With astonishing clarity—such precision that it truly amazes us. You see, then? We must draw upon the whole of Holy Scripture. We must also draw upon the Fathers, as we are doing here with Saint Cyril and his fifteenth catechesis, as well as the other catecheses and the teaching of the Church more broadly. There is also one more element, just as fundamental and essential as everything I have already told you: to whom will it be revealed
that this person is the Antichrist? Saint Andrew of Caesarea and Saint Irenaeus of Lyons say, “To those who practice nepsis”—to those who are watchful, who live a spiritual life and possess a pure heart. They will discern that he is the Antichrist. Do you understand, my dear friends? We must live the spiritual life. It is not enough merely to study and listen; we must live spiritually if we are to discern the final, truly human and yet genuine person of the Antichrist, whose name remains hidden until now. It will be revealed at that time: 666. And we must also discern all those
antichrists throughout history. According to the Evangelist John, “many antichrists have arisen.” They existed in our own time, in the preceding age, and in the age before that; they exist now and will continue a little further, until the true Antichrist comes. These are all the godless conditions and powers that today wage war against the Church and against the spiritual life. We must know all this. We must be fully armed and completely prepared, possessing the vision given by the Holy Spirit through nepsis—watchfulness of the heart and the nous, the spiritual intellect—that is, through purity of spiritual life. That was a short introduction, even though I stretched it out for half an hour.
We now enter, my dear friends, into the first paragraph of Saint Cyril’s fifteenth catechesis. He says: “Let us proclaim the coming of Christ—not only one coming, but also a second, far more glorious than the first. The first displayed His patient endurance; the second brings the crown of the divine Kingdom. For, as a rule, everything concerning our Lord Jesus Christ is twofold: His birth is twofold—one from God before the ages...”
Saint Cyril tells his catechumens that we have come to proclaim, to announce, this subject: not only one Coming of Christ, but also a second—and the Second Coming is far more glorious than the first. For the first required a display of patient endurance. Christ endured the Cross. He endured it. It was therefore a coming marked by patient endurance and forbearance. He showed forbearance when Pilate said to Him, “Are You not afraid of me? I have authority either to release You or to condemn You.” And the Lord replied:
“You would have no authority over Me unless it had been given to you.” What, then, was this? Forbearance: He endured it. His first coming, therefore, was marked by patient endurance and forbearance. But the Second Coming, Saint Cyril says, bears the diadem, the crown that seals the divine Kingdom of Heaven. Saint Cyril then uses a beautiful little phrase of immense depth: “For the most part.” That is, most things concerning Jesus Christ are twofold. Ah, pay close attention here. But before I go on to examine what he says...
I will mention one or two things that he does not mention, so that you may gain a picture of this twofold character in the person of Jesus Christ—yet always one person. Here lies the Mystery. We do not have two persons; we have one person. Yesterday we celebrated the feast of Saint Athanasius and Saint Cyril. Saint Cyril fought the heresy of Nestorius at Ephesus, at the Third Ecumenical Council. Nestorius claimed that the Most Holy Theotokos was merely Christ-bearer and not Theotokos, the God-bearer. This would mean that the Most Holy Theotokos conceived an ordinary man.
Whether that man was born of a virgin or not would make no difference. He would still be a mere man, simply and solely human, just as you and I are. Then, because this man was advancing in virtue, the Word of God entered him, and he came under the influence of the Word of God. But this would mean that the Word of God did not truly become man. And if there was no true Incarnation, then, according to Athanasius the Great and later Saint Cyril, there is no salvation. In that case, He did not assume what was ours—He did not take our nature in order to bring it to theosis. It would remain something foreign to Him. This is what the devil will do.
In the Antichrist, you see, the devil will not become incarnate. Some people say that the devil will become a man. No! The devil will simply act through a man. Why? Because the devil cannot exist in this twofold way. This Mystery belongs to God alone. The devil cannot become incarnate. You may tell me that he appears as a man. Angels also appear as men, but this is not a true incarnation; it is only an appearance. Does an angel not appear in order to deliver a message? Did angels not tell the Myrrh-bearing Women what had happened? Did angels not bring tidings to the shepherds? Angels assume human form, but they are not human beings.
They simply take human form so that they can speak and communicate with people. The devil also assumes forms—human forms, animal forms, whatever you like. But the devil is not a man, nor do angels become men. Heavenly spirits do not become incarnate. It is impossible; by nature it cannot happen. Their nature is not constituted in such a way. God has willed it so. And therefore, under the teaching we have just described, salvation would also be impossible. Saint Cyril says that Mary is not merely Christ-bearer. She did not give birth to a man who later became the Messiah. That is what “Christ-bearer” would mean: one who gives birth to the Messiah. No! Mary, the Most Holy Theotokos, is Theotokos, the God-bearer!
Within her womb she conceived the Word of God Himself, who took human nature from her. This is scriptural and needs no lengthy proof. It is what the Evangelist John says: “The Word became flesh.” The Word—that is, the Word of God, the second person, the Son—became flesh. He Himself became flesh; He did not enter into someone else. Only the Antichrist, as I told you, will act through the power of the devil. Christ is not the power of God acting in someone who had been born as an ordinary man and was advancing and growing in virtue. The Word became flesh. But because Jesus Christ...
is both God and man—perfect God and perfect man—almost everything in Him is found in a twofold way. I shall mention only two examples that Saint Cyril does not give, and then we shall consider his own examples. Christ always has one person, not two. For if we say that Christ is two persons, this would mean that the Word entered into a man. The man would already have his own person, and then a second person, the Word of God, would enter him. No. When we say that God became man, we mean that it is the same person. He does not assume another person. This is a Mystery, because He does assume a human soul and a human body; yet although the soul ordinarily constitutes the human person, Jesus Christ—that is, the Word of God—does not...
take on a second person; He remains the same person. We therefore have one hypostasis, one person. In theology, the person is called the hypostasis. I will not complicate matters by going any further. It is enough to say that the person is called the hypostasis. Thus, when we say “hypostasis,” we mean one person, and we say that the human and divine natures have one person, one hypostasis. We also express it in this way: the hypostatic union of the divine and human natures in one person. That is all. Yet there are two energies, two modes of operation. There are also two wills. These are among the things that are twofold. The two energies are the divine uncreated energy of the Word of God and the energy of the human nature. And there are two wills: the divine will and the human will.
The human knowledge, will, and energy are unquestionably subject to the divine. You know that a heresy arose claiming that Jesus Christ has only one will. This is the heresy known as Monothelitism. Likewise, regarding His energies, there is Monoenergism. And as regards knowledge, Jesus Christ has two kinds of knowledge: human knowledge and divine knowledge. Thus, in Christ there are two wills, two energies, and two kinds of knowledge. But as the Word of God, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, He has one energy, one power, and one knowledge. It is only in His human existence, as the God-Man, that almost everything is twofold, as Saint Cyril tells us here.
Saint Cyril begins to enumerate them: “There is a twofold birth: one from God before the ages, and one from a virgin at the consummation of the ages.” The first birth is from God. God is called the Father of the Word because He eternally and timelessly begets Him. There is also a birth according to His human nature, from a virgin. When does this take place? At the consummation of the ages. You see, in relation to the creation of the world and of man, the event of the Incarnation takes place at the last or next-to-last moment in the history of creation.
This is a revelatory point; pay attention to it. In relation to the age of creation and the history of humanity upon the earth, the Incarnation occurs in time, as Saint Cyril says, “at the consummation of the ages.” It is the next-to-last minute in the history of creation and mankind. He came in the Last Things, at the consummation of the ages, at the end. If you ask why He did not come earlier, only God knows, though we can offer many reflections. But were those who lived before Christ treated unjustly? No, not at all. Why? Because Christ descended into Hades and preached there. Those who received Him there...
would also have received Him during this present life. And those who did not receive Him even in Hades would not have received Him had they lived in Christ’s own time. Whom, then, did Christ treat unjustly? No one. No one. That is one answer. This is why He descended into Hades. It answers the question of why He did not come immediately, at the dawn of the human race. Adam and Eve sinned and were driven out of Paradise. Why, then, before history went any further, did the Son of God not become incarnate and set things right? It was judged fitting that events should unfold in this way, and I have explained why: God wrongs no one. But why is this God’s plan? Pay attention: why is this God’s plan?
No one should pry too curiously into God’s plan. We know only that God’s plan is always the fruit of wisdom, power, and love. But we know this about every plan of God. So be at peace. “The descents are also twofold: the first was hidden, like rain upon a fleece, and the second, which is to come, will be manifest.” The descents, the comings down, are twofold, he says. The first time, He came down from heaven. “He bowed the heavens and came down,” as a verse from the Psalms says.
He bowed them down. What a phrase! The verb means that He lowered the heavens. How shall we put it? If He was high above, how could He cross the distance? Pay attention: this is an expression, an image. Do not take it literally. How could He cross from there? So He lowers the heavens; He brings the heavens down. There is another possible solution: to raise the earth. But how could the earth be raised? It is filled with sinners, as Saint Cyril will tell us shortly. Listen to what he says further on: upon the earth there was corruption, theft, adultery, and every kind of sin. “Blood was poured out upon the earth, and blood mingled with blood in the world.” How could the earth rise to heaven? So there is another way: the love of God brings the heavens down. This is an exceedingly beautiful and poetic expression.
If you have even a little poetic sensitivity, you can feel it: “He bowed the heavens and came down.” It is a deeply poetic phrase. It reveals divine condescension. The verse does not use the word “condescension”; it expresses it poetically, descriptively, through an image. It is very beautiful. And He came down. This, then, was the first descent. What was it like? It was hidden. What does “hidden” mean? It means that it was not recognized, because He did not bring with Him the glory of heaven. We know how obscurely He was born. The event of the shepherds and the angels was one incident on that night.
It was quickly forgotten. The visit of the Magi was another incident, and it too was quickly forgotten. Thirty years passed in obscurity. When Christ returned—or rather, when the Theotokos and Joseph returned from Egypt, fleeing Herod’s fury—they did not go to Bethlehem, where these events had occurred: both the worship of the Magi and the shepherds’ proclamation of what they had seen. They went north, to Nazareth in Galilee. No one knew anything, and Christ’s presence remained unknown. Who was He? Did the people of Nazareth not say in astonishment, “Why, who is this? Where did He get such wisdom?”
“Where did this wisdom come from? Is this not the son of Mary and Joseph?” Pay attention: Joseph had no marital relation with the Most Holy Theotokos. This is why our iconography places him at the very edge of the icon of Christ’s Nativity—far to the side. Do you want another detail? His back is turned toward the event of the Nativity, showing through iconography that Joseph had no part in the conception. An image that depicts Joseph, the Most Holy Theotokos, and Christ together in a workshop, a carpenter’s shop, is not Orthodox. Still less Orthodox is the title “The Holy Family.” When we speak of a family, we mean a father, a mother, and the natural begetting of children.
That title is not Orthodox; it is contrary to dogma. We must pay attention to this point. This is not a “Holy Family.” That is why the angel repeatedly says to Joseph, “Take the Child and His mother.” Do you notice how the angel puts it? “Take the Child and His mother.” He does not say, “your child.” Legally, Joseph appeared to be the father. For what was the Theotokos supposed to say? Could she have testified openly to the Mystery? What would people have thought, my dear friends, and what would have happened? For this reason, Joseph was legally regarded as the father. Thus...
Christ’s presence in the world was inconspicuous and hidden. “He emptied Himself”—not that He emptied Himself of His divinity, but that He did not allow His divine glory to be seen. And do not forget: when He allowed even a little of His divine glory to appear, this happened on Mount Tabor, and only before three disciples. It was done solely to strengthen their faith, so that they would not misunderstand who He was and stumble—although in the end, as you know, the disciples did stumble. Christ had said, “Tonight you will all fall away because of Me, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’” What does it mean that they would be scattered? They would say, “Who is this man whom we have followed for three years?” Do you understand? This was their stumbling. But...
So, at His first coming, Christ was unheralded and hidden, “like rain upon a fleece.” This phrase, “like rain upon a fleece,” comes from Psalm 71, verse 6. A fleece is wool, especially sheep’s wool. If we leave wool outside in the night air, though we do not see the dew falling anywhere and notice nothing happening, in the morning we find that the dew has settled upon the wool. And it fell—notice this; there is no harm in my using words from our older language, provided that I explain them—
silently, without a sound. The old word means noiselessly. It fell without making any noise. Notice: silently. Does the dew make any noise when it falls? None at all. What did this verse from the Psalms mean by saying that “rain fell upon a fleece”? It means dew. The word can also mean a downpour, but here it means dew upon wool: Christ’s birth would take place without the world noticing it. It would be unheralded. “And the second descent, the one yet to come, will be manifest.” There is also a second descent, which lies in the future and will be manifest—that is, glorious. Pay attention to this word, “glorious.” I want to tell you something. I would not like to believe that anyone listening to us now could reach such a point, but you should know it so that you can tell others. We have many Christians—first of all, of course, those who neither hear the word of God nor attend Church. But there are also Christians who hear the word of God and attend Church. How they listen to the word of God, I do not know. I can only conclude that either they do not know, or, if they do know, they do not believe that Christ will come again. They celebrate Christmas, which commemorates Christ’s first descent into the world—the descent of the Son of God—and they are moved by it. Yet they do not believe that Christ will come again.
Many times they answer, “How can we know these things?” But Christ Himself said that He would come again. There is no clearer teaching in Holy Scripture than the teaching that Christ will come again. For God’s sake, let no one maintain that Christ will not return, for such a person is an unbeliever; there is no ground whatsoever for doubting this. What would you say, then? Is Christianity exhausted by Christ’s first coming? If so, we have made a grave mistake. Christ did not come into the world merely to tell us a few good things. Christ came into the world to take us out of this present world, to restore our human nature to us, to judge the world, and to make it new—to renew the whole of creation. All this will take place at His Second Coming.
Could we ever forget this? Christ is coming again. And we must not forget that the appearance of the Antichrist is connected with Christ’s Second Coming. Let us never forget it. The Apostle Paul tells us that immediately afterward Christ will consume him—He will destroy him by His coming, by His now manifest appearance in the world, and by His word. This is what I was telling you earlier: the Antichrist will be cast away alive, without undergoing death, because Christ will have appeared. And what does that mean? Christ’s Second Coming. The Antichrist will go directly into Hell, into the lake of fire, and so forth. Thus Christ is coming again, and simply because the faithful Christian can say this,
he is filled with hope, peace, and consolation. In the Gospel according to Luke—I do not remember the chapter and verse—the Lord says that when you see all these things taking place, during those days that herald the Antichrist, when evil has reached its height and your own trial has reached its height, then lift up your heads toward heaven, because your redemption is drawing near. Why toward heaven? Because that is where the Lord comes from. The Lord’s teaching is clear: He comes from heaven. He does not come from the earth. Demons and demon-possessed men who present themselves as messiahs come from the earth.
The Lord comes from heaven, and every eye will see Him. Just as lightning flashes from one end of heaven to the other—both in the way it appears and in its suddenness—so will the coming of the Son of Man be, both in its manifestation and in its speed. The Lord, then, is coming. That is why the faithful wait and always look toward heaven—spiritually, of course, though at times also with their bodily eyes. “Lord, when will You come?” It is no sin to ask, “When will You come?” The souls of those who were slain for their witness to Christ and the Gospel already say this. In the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, they are beneath the altar, which is none other than Paradise,
where the Saints await the Resurrection of the Dead. They are waiting, and so they cry, “Lord, when will You come?” And He promised them, “Do not be impatient. More of your brethren must be added, and then I will come.” For their consolation, each was given a white robe, as it says there. I will not repeat everything written in the Apocalypse. Saint Cyril continues: “At His first coming He was wrapped in swaddling clothes in a manger; at His second, He clothes Himself with light as with a garment.” At His first coming He was wrapped in swaddling clothes. To swaddle means to dress an infant in the little garments of a child, to wrap the child in cloth. That is what the word means.
He was swaddled, then, and in such obscurity that He was laid in swaddling clothes inside a manger, as the Gospels tell us. But at His Second Coming He will not be wrapped in swaddling clothes; He will clothe Himself with light as with a garment. “He clothes Himself”—that is, He puts on a garment. “You who clothe Yourself with light as with a garment.” The phrase means, “He who is clothed in light.” “He clothes Himself with light as with a garment.” He will put on light as a garment—that is, glory, indescribable glory. “At His first coming He endured the Cross, despising its shame.” At His first appearance, Saint Cyril says, He endured the Cross and scorned its shame: naked upon the Cross and rejected by His own people. “At His second coming He comes escorted and glorified by hosts of angels.” At His Second Coming, however, He comes filled with glory, accompanied by the angels of heaven. And take note: the entire angelic world will be with Him. We might call it a universal mobilization of heaven’s glory. The whole angelic world will accompany Him. My dear ones, we must pause and stop here, before we have even completed the first paragraph, so that we may grasp this truth. We shall continue, God willing, for our time has ended. We must grasp that Christ is coming again.
And since Christ is coming again, all those other things will also come: that dreadful trial of Christians in the days of the Antichrist. Therefore, with our knowledge and faith firmly established in the truth that Christ is coming again, may we be filled with the peace and hope that come from Christ. That is all for this evening.

Η βασιλεία του Αντιχρίστου, η επίσημος βασιλεία του, είναι τριάμισι χρόνια, και με το τέλος των τριάμισι ετών αρχίζει η κρίση. Αντιλαμβάνεστε, λοιπόν, ότι είναι πράγματα συνεπτυγμένα αυτά μεταξύ τους, εννοείται συνεπτυγμένα, κολλητά, όπως σας είπα, συναπτά. Στη συνέχεια, λέει η επιγραφή, «και ανάγνωσις εκ του Δανιήλ». Την αφορμή την παίρνει διαβάζοντας τον Δανιήλ τον Προφήτη, για να πει αυτά που θα πει εις τους κατηχουμένους. Χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι δεν θα ανατρέξει σε πλείστα, πλείστα, πλείστα όσα σημεία της Αγίας Γραφής. Θα το δείτε αυτό. Θα επιστρατεύσει ό,τι μπορεί να επιστρατεύσει από την Αγία Γραφή, για να κατοχυρώσει εκείνο το οποίο θα πει. Ποιο σημείο θα πάρει από τον Δανιήλ;
Θα φτάσουμε όμως και στον Αντίχριστο, για να μην πείτε εκείνοι που ήρθατε σήμερα: «Α, δεν είπε τίποτα, δεν ξαναπάω». Όχι, προς Θεού. Θα πάρουμε το θέμα ως πλαίσιο και εκεί θα δούμε και το θέμα του Αντιχρίστου. Ύστερα, μας ενδιαφέρει πιο πολύ το θέμα του Αντιχρίστου από το θέμα του ερχομού του Χριστού; Αυτό μας ενδιαφέρει, το θέμα του ερχομού του Χριστού. Αν αυτό έχω μπροστά μου, και οι αντίχριστοι δεν θα μου κάνουν τίποτε. Και θα είμαι και ενημερωμένος και θα ξέρω πώς θα αντιμετωπίσω τον Αντίχριστο. Κατά τα άλλα, αν μόνο για τον Αντίχριστο ενδιαφέρομαι και όχι για τον ερχομό του Χριστού, θα πέσω έξω, δεν θα ξέρω πώς να κινηθώ. Ύστερα, δεν μας ενδιαφέρει τι θα γίνει αυτός ο κόσμος;
