Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem treats the Ascension as familiar to his catechumens, while the lecture supplements his teaching from Luke’s Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Christ’s session at the Father’s right hand signifies divine favor and authority rather than a physical location, and his throne belongs to him eternally rather than as a reward acquired after the Resurrection. The lecture concludes by gathering scriptural testimony that the risen and ascended Son of Man reigns at the right hand of divine power.

You will remember that Saint Cyril regarded the events of the Lord’s Ascension as already familiar. For that reason, he did not say much about them to his catechumens, since they had heard about the Ascension the day before, on Sunday. Since he says here that it was Sunday, the catechesis must therefore have taken place on Monday. I do not believe it took place every Monday; it simply happened that, on this occasion, that subject came after Sunday, and so it was delivered on a Monday. But, my beloved, I would not want us to be left without some additional teaching.
For the Lord’s Ascension is a very great subject. Of course, I will not bring forward many passages, but only one passage from Holy Scripture, from the Acts of the Apostles, which speaks of Christ’s Ascension.
You know these things. Luke the Evangelist concludes the book that bears his name—his Gospel, the Gospel according to Luke—with the event of Christ’s Ascension; and he begins the book of Acts, which he himself also wrote, with that same event.
Luke the Evangelist thus makes it a common point of continuity between the Gospel and the book of the Acts of the Apostles.
In his Gospel he says very little and speaks very briefly, precisely because he intended to write more in the book of Acts. Luke therefore tells us that for forty days the Lord was seen—appearing to His disciples—and spoke to them about the Kingdom of God, about the Mysteries of the Kingdom of God. Then, on the fortieth day, as Luke the Evangelist notes here...
He took His disciples to a certain place—which we know from the Gospel was the Mount of Olives.
As we have already said, Saint Cyril mentions that this is the gateway of return. Bethlehem is the gateway by which He came into the world, and the Mount of Olives is the gateway of His departure. And while He was speaking to His disciples, we read: “Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up”—this is in the first chapter, verse 9—“and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood beside them in white garments.”
They said: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” We see that this short yet very rich, instructive, and clear passage tells us what took place at the Lord’s Ascension. The Ascension occurred while He was speaking to them, and “He was taken up while they watched.” Who are “they”? Grammatically, it refers to the disciples, but the disciples were not the only ones there; other people were present as well.
This shows that many people witnessed the Ascension. And the expression “while they watched,” being in the present tense, shows that the action continued for some time. It was not a momentary disappearance, but what we might call a slow Ascension—a very slow one. The Lord began to rise little by little, gradually ascending. It lasted for a certain length of time. How long? Long enough for someone to say, “I can bear witness to this event; my senses did not deceive me.”
When something happens instantaneously—suddenly and abruptly—I may say that my eye played a trick on me. How often our eyes deceive us, especially when a person’s eyesight is not very good. Sometimes they produce strange images. Out of the corner of your eye, you seem to see something; you turn to look, and there is nothing there. It was an image produced by the eye. Here, my beloved, the event lasts for some time, and many people see it simultaneously. That is why it says: “While they watched, He was taken up.” To be taken up means to be lifted upward. And then, “A cloud received Him out of their sight”; it lifted Him and bore Him up—a cloud came beneath Him. This cloud...
This, of course, was not an ordinary cloud made up of the familiar droplets of water. A cloud is vapor—or, more precisely, it consists of very small droplets which, when they unite, give us rain. But this was not a natural cloud. It was an uncreated cloud, so to speak. Just as we speak of the uncreated light, this cloud is presented as God’s vehicle. The Old Testament repeatedly tells us that the cloud is God’s vehicle. But take care: God has no need to be carried from one place to another. Such descriptions portray God in human form and in terms of human experience. For God...
Fills all things. Since He fills all things, it cannot mean that He is in one place and absent from another, so that He must move from place to place. Such a thing is inconceivable. It simply means that God is portrayed as moving in an entirely human manner, through an image suited to our understanding. In this instance, although the Old Testament, as I have said, consistently presents the cloud as God’s vehicle, here we also have Christ’s human nature, which truly can move from one place to another. Indeed, a related question was raised last week concerning this very subject: namely, that Christ’s human nature...
Is perfect, and everything in Christ is twofold. He is perfect God and perfect man. There is a divine will and a human will. There is divine knowledge and human knowledge.
We have divine power and human power. Everything in Christ is twofold. Everything is twofold.
Thus, His human nature certainly always remains what it is. Yet it is united with the divine nature through what is called the hypostatic union. The hypostatic union means that there are two natures, but one person.
These two natures are not confused; they remain without confusion. The divine nature is always divine, and the human nature always human. There are the human and divine wills, and the human and divine energies. They are never confused. Yet because of this hypostatic union, Jesus Christ is present everywhere. We shall see this a little later today in Saint Cyril: “God being first”—that is, although He appears absent, He is among us. In reality He is not absent; He is absent only from our sight, but He is among us. Thus Jesus Christ is present everywhere even in His human nature. He is in heaven and, at the same time, present everywhere because of His union with the divine nature, which is everywhere present.
This happens in a manner we cannot understand; it is beyond comprehension. Here, however, the Lord is lifted up—borne upward by this cloud, which, as I tell you, is an uncreated divine energy—and He ascends toward heaven. The passage uses several very striking expressions. It says, “while they watched.” Then it says that the cloud which received Him and bore Him up took Him “out of their sight.” And a little further on it says, “while they were looking steadfastly toward heaven.” Notice: “while they watched,” “out of their sight,” and “looking steadfastly.” To “look steadfastly,” an expression Luke especially favors, means...
To observe attentively and for an extended period of time. That is what the verb means. It does not mean simply “to see” or “to look,” but “to gaze intently.” Later, in his First Epistle, John the Evangelist says: “That which we have seen”—“which we have seen with our eyes.” Notice the expression: “which we have seen with our eyes.” When we want to assure someone that we truly saw something, we say, “We saw it with our own eyes.” Of course, no one sees in any other way; we see with our eyes, not with our noses. But when we say, “We saw it with our own eyes,” it means...
That it is certain. This is why the Evangelist says, “That which we have seen with our eyes.” You see here the element of revelation. Then, a little further on, he says, “And our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life,” and so forth. This is something known directly, not only in an intelligible manner but also through the senses—through the bodily senses we possess. This is very significant. And I say it again to emphasize, in passing, the first question we raised: What is the difference between Christianity and the other religions? I say once more that there is a great danger, because so many ideas circulate in our time...
A person may be led astray and say, “Everything is good, and everything contains some truth. So what difference does it make whether I am a Christian or a Buddhist?” No, my beloved. Pay close attention to this point. Be very careful—very careful indeed. All the others contain error and falsehood, because the truth cannot be scattered here and there. Either it is the truth or it is not. Let me return to the passage: “And while they were gazing into heaven as He went”—as He was going into heaven. So He truly was going into heaven. That is where the Lord went. We shall see Saint Cyril of Jerusalem strongly emphasize this further on.
He speaks not only about the Ascension, but also about the destination of this journey. And the two men—it specifically says two men—“stood by them in white garments.” They were two angels, who drew the attention of the disciples and the others present and said to them, “Why do you stand looking into heaven?” You see? “Looking into heaven. This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way.” He who was taken up into heaven will come again in the same manner: “as you saw Him go into heaven.” In the same way that you saw Him depart...
He will come again. This is very significant. But let us pause here and return to Saint Cyril. We are now at paragraph 27, where he says: “Remember also what has been said. Do not think that the Son’s sitting at the right hand of the Father began only because of the sequence in the Creed, which says, ‘And He ascended into heaven and sat at the right hand of the Father.’” In other words, Saint Cyril now wishes to explain to his catechumens where this Ascension of Christ came to its completion.
What was the destination of Christ’s Ascension? Yes, Christ ascended—but where did He go? Saint Cyril says that we shall take this article of the Creed and explain it: “And He sat at the right hand of the Father.” Thus, the destination of the Ascension was the throne at the right hand of God the Father. That was its completion. Why this is its destination, and what it means to be enthroned at the right hand, we shall see as we continue. “Do not pry into the nature of the throne, for it is beyond comprehension; and do not tolerate those who wrongly say that only after the Cross, the Resurrection, and the ascent into heaven did the Son begin to sit at the right hand of the Father. For He did not acquire the throne through advancement. Rather, from the very moment of His eternal being—for He is eternally begotten—He has shared the Father’s throne.” He shares the Father’s throne. Many passages of Holy Scripture say that Christ sat at the right hand of God the Father. Stephen the Protomartyr also tells us: “I see the heavens opened and Jesus standing.” Here it says “standing,” not “sitting.” This standing posture is significant: “standing at the right hand...”
“...of the glory of God,” that is, of divine power. There we shall see why, as I told you, the Lord is standing. In the Apocalypse, too, He appears standing and walking about. This means that He keeps tireless watch. Let me ask you by means of a very simple example: Does a guard watching over something, perhaps a gate, sit down, or does he stand and patrol? Of course he patrols; he stands rather than sits. Stephen therefore had to receive the clear vision that Christ was not sitting there, paying no attention to him...
To speak in human terms, Christ was standing and watching over Stephen. Stephen therefore had to place absolute trust in Christ’s hands, even though in a short while—because Christ would permit it—Stephen’s enemies would take up stones and stone him. This is significant. Yet the Lord sat at the right hand of God the Father. What is this throne? “Do not pry into it,” says Saint Cyril, because it is incomprehensible—utterly incomprehensible. Why is it incomprehensible? Quite simply, because a throne is an image. It is a chair, a splendid chair, we might say, set upon a raised platform.
We have all seen many thrones, whether in photographs or elsewhere; what we have seen is a chair. But Saint Cyril tells us not to imagine anything of that kind. It is simply an image, because Christ does not sit down in order to rest. Nor, as we shall see shortly, are there literal left and right sides of God the Father. The expression “at the right hand” signifies divine favor. That is what it means. And do not say that Christ sits upon the throne of glory because He advanced and earned it. No, says Saint Cyril: “He did not acquire the throne through advancement, but has possessed it from the very moment of His eternal being.”
“For He is eternally begotten.” Pay attention: He did not advance in virtue and then receive honor and glory. He possessed the throne eternally. You may remember that in the first catechetical lectures, in that brief overview of Jesus Christ which touched on a little of everything, we said that Christ did not receive the throne as a reward or through advancement. Such a thing would be unthinkable. He possessed this throne eternally. “For He is eternally begotten.” Here this means that He is without beginning and eternal.
He is co-eternal with the Father—eternal, that is, everlasting; co-eternal with the Father. I once gave you a brief explanation of this, and I shall repeat it. The distinction between everlasting and eternal without beginning is this: when we say everlasting, something may have a beginning but no end. We, for example, had a beginning. At a certain moment we were born, and so we have a beginning. But we shall have no end; we shall live in eternal life. God, however, has neither beginning nor end. Strictly speaking, therefore, it is inadequate merely to call God everlasting. God is eternal without beginning: always, always, always—without end and without beginning.
“Before the Savior’s coming in the flesh, the Prophet Isaiah saw this throne and said, ‘I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up,’” and so forth. “For no one has ever seen the Father; the One who appeared to the prophet at that time was the Son.” How beautiful and majestic this is, my beloved! If you read the sixth chapter of Isaiah, you will find these words. It is Isaiah’s well-known vision, in which he says that he saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up.
It was an exceedingly high throne within the temple of God, Solomon’s Temple, and the temple was filled with smoke and incense. There God said, “Who? Who?” I shall give you the translation from the Hebrew, because it serves us better here than the Septuagint. As you know, in order to gain a more precise understanding of the text, we sometimes consult a translation from the Hebrew and at other times use the Septuagint. On occasion, we may also consult other ancient translations. The text says, “Who will go for Us? Who will go for Us?” It uses the first-person plural.
This is another of the passages using the plural. The first is where God says, “Let Us make.” Then there is, “Behold, Adam has become like one of Us.” Another is, “Come, let Us go down and confuse their languages,” at the building of the tower of Babylon, or Babel. “Come, let Us go down and confuse them”—come, let Us descend and confuse their languages. And now here again we have the plural: “Who will go for Us?”—who will go on Our behalf? And Isaiah says, “I will, Lord.”
Then the Lord gives the prophecy, and so forth. Now pay close attention. Isaiah saw the Lord upon a throne, high and lifted up. Isaiah the Prophet tells us this. Who was upon the throne? The Lord. Please pay very close attention here. Which Lord? Yahweh. The Lord. Yahweh means “the Lord.”
How do we know that the One seated upon the throne is Jesus Christ? John the Evangelist tells us. Listen. John says that the people’s unbelief fulfilled what the prophet had said: “This people has closed its ears and does not hear; it does not wish to hear.” John the Evangelist says in his Gospel that Isaiah spoke these things when he saw His glory. Whose glory was it? The glory of the Son.
It was the glory of the Son that Isaiah saw. Therefore, who is seated upon the throne? The Son. And what does the Old Testament—Isaiah himself—call Him? The Lord, Yahweh. Therefore Jesus Christ is Yahweh. What does this mean? The Jehovah’s Witnesses say that Jesus Christ is not Yahweh, but a created being. No. Jesus Christ is Yahweh, as Saint Cyril tells us here so beautifully.
He says: “I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up.” Notice this: “For no one has ever seen the Father.” No one has ever seen the Father. “But the One who appeared to the prophet at that time was the Son.” The One who appeared to the prophet was the Son, not the Father. Therefore the Son is Yahweh, the Father is Yahweh, and the Holy Spirit is Yahweh—the Lord. The Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. I use the name Yahweh precisely because we are speaking about the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Yahweh means “Lord.” The Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. Yet there is one Lord—only one Lord. We do not have three Lords. We do not have three Gods. There is one Lord. Nevertheless, the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and likewise the Holy Spirit is Lord. Thus we see here that it was the Son who was upon the throne. Therefore...
He was upon the throne, and Isaiah saw Him there. Now, when He ascends and reaches heaven, He does not receive a throne as the result of advancement; rather, He had truly possessed that throne eternally. This is what Saint Cyril wishes to emphasize here. It is extremely important, my beloved. We would add only that His human nature now also sits upon this throne. His divine nature was eternally enthroned—eternally, eternally. The Son does not possess the throne through advancement; He possesses it because He is God. And when He became man, take note of this as well...
As God, He was never separated from the Father. Never. For Him to be separated from the Father would be inconceivable. Thus, as the Akathist Hymn tells us, “The uncircumscribed Word was wholly present here below, yet in no way absent from the heights above.” Wholly present. And the Psalmist says, “Your throne was prepared from of old; You are from everlasting,” as we read in Psalm 92. Do you see? Your throne was prepared from of old. Why? Because You existed before time came into being. If You existed before time came into being, then You are eternal.
“Because the hour is late, we shall be content with these testimonies concerning this matter.” The time has passed, he says, and we have said many things. He then quickly mentions several passages, which I too shall cite briefly. I shall not analyze them; I shall simply mention them. I have analyzed only what we have covered thus far. And so, my beloved, the fourteenth catechetical lecture—which concerns the Resurrection, the Ascension, and Christ’s enthronement at the right hand of God the Father—draws to a close. “Now we must remind you of a few of the many things said about the Son’s sitting at the right hand of the Father. For...”
“Psalm 109 clearly says”—and what does Psalm 109 say? “The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” The Lord said to my Lord. That is, David says that God the Father, who is my Lord—the Lord and Father—said to the Lord and Son, “Sit at My right hand until I place Your enemies beneath Your feet.” Thus, You sit at My right hand. “The Savior confirms what is said in the Gospels, declaring that David spoke these words not of himself, but by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, when He says: ‘How then does David...’”
“How then does David, in the Holy Spirit, call him Lord, saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand,’” and so forth? The Lord himself quoted this passage. And what did he say? That David spoke these words in the Holy Spirit: “The Lord said to my Lord.” This is extremely important. Indeed, I must tell you that this is a unique passage in which Christ reveals his divinity—and not only his divinity, but also his humanity, where he is, at the right hand of God the Father, and what he is doing there. For the words, “until your enemies are placed beneath your feet,” reveal the work of Christ within history.
Let me say this as well. It is a precious passage. I said I would not analyze it—but am I not also tempted? How can one refrain from analyzing it? For here, beloved, it shows us this: first, that Christ there upon the throne is the eternal mediator. And his mediation does not consist in the Son and the Holy Spirit speaking to the Father. The very presence of his human nature constitutes...
It constitutes the mediation. In other words, this is an ontological mediation, grounded in that human nature present within the bosom of the Godhead. God beholds this human nature and looks with favor upon humanity. Christ, then, is the mediator in his very being. And he is also the one who...
Within history, governs history and fights on behalf of his Church against the enemies of that Church. This is why we often ask, “What is Christ doing?” And this is why the Apocalypse so often presents Christ as judge, entering into history even though it is not yet the Last Judgment. At the end of the Book of Revelation, it presents Christ as the final judge. Yet although it speaks so many times of Christ as judge, we do not see him visibly present. This means that he governs history without being seen. He directs it, determines its outcome, and governs it. The Lord of history, beloved, is...
It is Christ.
Now, a brief aside. I do not know whether this will be of use to you—take it as you wish. Yesterday, a certain politician said, “Children will learn history in school and will say, ‘Just look at how people once waged wars, whereas now we shall finally have peace.’” Alas for us! And who would not desire that? But the earth will never see peace. Beloved, I am not a lover of war—God forbid—but this is the reality, and we must not deceive ourselves. Our poor earth will never see peace, and the closer it draws to its end...
The more people will become entangled in bitter conflict, and wars will intensify until the greatest war in history takes place, which will also be the last. The last. So all these things are fairy tales. If we seek peace merely through disarmament, we will not find it; peace is given by Christ alone. Is Christ not the judge of history? It is not human beings who control history; it is Christ. Christ permits human beings to act within history and leaves them to do so. And where do human beings lead history? To wars and conflicts. Let us continue. Paragraph twenty-nine: “We must also recall a few other testimonies concerning the Son’s sitting at the right hand of the Father.”
Let us mention, he says, and call to mind a few more such sayings and testimonies from Holy Scripture. “For in the Gospel according to Matthew it is written: ‘Nevertheless, I say to you,’” Christ says, “‘from now on’”—and where did he say this? To Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin—“‘from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power.’” God is also called Power; therefore, “at the right hand of Power” means at the right hand of God. It is the same as “at the right hand of the glory of God,” as Stephen says. Do you see what the Lord said there before the court?
This is a solemn moment, when the Lord is being judged, for Caiaphas has placed him under oath: “Tell us the truth. Who are you? Who are you?” And the Lord declared who he is and referred to Daniel’s vision. So you will see still more—not only what you have already seen. “I am the Son of the Blessed.” “Are you,” he asks, “the Son of the Blessed?” “You have said it.” It is as you say: I am the Son of the Blessed. And not only that. Listen, and I will tell you what else you will see: the Son of Man. Here he says, “From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power.” Next comes the Apostle Peter.
“Through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven,” he says here in his First Epistle, chapter 3, verse 21: through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God after going into heaven. The Apostle Paul says the following in Romans: “Christ who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God.” Christ who died—or rather, who rose from the dead—and who is at the right hand of God. “And writing to the Ephesians, he says this.” In his letter to the Ephesians, he said the following.
“According to the divine uncreated energy of his mighty power, which he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead”—God the Father raises the Son—“and seated him at his right hand,” at the right hand of God the Father, and so forth. Another passage says: “Since you have been raised spiritually, seek the things above.”
Seek spiritual and heavenly things, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God the Father. And in the Epistle to the Hebrews he says, “When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” Majesty. He sat on high, at the right hand of the Majesty. This is another name for God: Majesty, Glory, Power, Majesty. And again, also from Hebrews: “To which of the angels did he ever say, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’?”
Did he ever say this to an angel? No, but only to the Son. And again, from Hebrews: “But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever”—one sacrifice, enduring forever—“sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.” We might say that this expands upon the passage from Psalm 109, but it comes from Hebrews. And again from the Epistle to the Hebrews: “Looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of the faith, who, for the joy set before him...”
“...endured the Cross, despising its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” He sat at the right hand of the throne of God—he who is the author and perfecter of the faith, who, instead of the joy he could have possessed as God, endured the shame of the Cross, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and sat at the right hand of God the Father. “Though there are other testimonies concerning the Only-Begotten’s throne at the right hand of God, these will suffice for us at present.” “I remind you of this once again: he did not receive the dignity of this throne after his incarnate coming; rather, before all ages, the Only-Begotten Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, has always possessed the throne at the right hand of the Father.” He repeats the same point we examined at the beginning. He did not receive the throne through advancement. He always had it. He had the throne eternally. “And may the God of all...” Forgive me; now he comes to the conclusion, which contains prayers for the catechumens. These prayers are also for all of you, and for all of us, from Saint Cyril, as he concludes the fourteenth catechetical lecture. Thank you.
This is the period before the feast days. As I told you earlier, we shall return after the feasts, on January 12, as a reminder. “And may the God of all, the Father of Christ, and our Lord Jesus Christ, who descended and ascended...” This contains some very beautiful points, well worth studying. God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, he who descended and ascended, “who descended and ascended and sits together with the Father.” And now come the prayers: “May he guard your souls.” May he indeed guard your souls.
“May he preserve unshaken and unchanging your hope in the risen Christ.” May he keep your hope in the risen Christ firm and unchanging, neither shaken nor altered—in other words, may we continually believe in the risen Lord. “May he raise you together with himself from your dead sins into his heavenly gift.” May he raise us together with Christ from our dead works and our dead sins, and may he grant us...
“...his heavenly gift. May he count you worthy to be caught up in the clouds.” This gives us a very beautiful outline—a concise picture, if you understand me—of the Christian’s journey. May he count you worthy, he says, to be caught up in the clouds, just as Christ ascended into heaven in a cloud, “to meet the Lord in the air, at the appointed time.” At the proper time. And when will that be? When the Resurrection of the dead takes place, when Christ comes to judge and the Resurrection of the dead occurs. Then may the Lord count you worthy...
...to be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord. Why? Because sinners will not be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord. They will remain below. And do not ask me to say more about what “below” means. They will remain below. “And until that time of his glorious Second Coming arrives”—and concerning Christ’s Second Coming, as you know, he will speak to us in the next catechetical lecture, the fifteenth, where he will also tell us many things about the Antichrist. Therefore, pay attention: God willing, if we are well, you must not miss the lectures beginning January 12. Please take note of this.
“And until that time of his glorious Second Coming arrives, may he inscribe all your names in the book of the living and, once he has written them, may he never blot them out.” Until then, may he write your names, he says, in the book of the living; and once God has inscribed your names, may he never erase them. Why? “For the names of many who fall away are blotted out.” Many are those who fall. They do not persevere to the end. Beloved, God forbid that I should say these things to you and then fall myself, while you are saved. There is no security whatsoever. I may be written in the book of life, and then be blotted out.
Let me explain at once. When the Seventy and the Twelve returned rejoicing that the demons were subject to them, the Lord said, “Do not rejoice in this, but rejoice that your names have been written in the book of life.” And yet, beloved, we do not know what became of the Seventy. Of the Twelve, one was already blotted out: Judas. Although the Lord said that their names were written, Judas’s name too had been written, but it was blotted out. This is why Saint Cyril says here: May your names—may your names—not be erased, even to the very last moment. I observe many people, and I fear for myself.
I am speaking here in literary and scholarly terms. I see many people who maintain a spiritual life and then, at some point, lose everything. You see faith flourish, and then, at some point, you see a fall into sins: they go knocking at the doors of sorcery, and there is a complete decline. And one asks, “What happened to you? What is going on with you? Why? You had everything.” Could not what happened to that person also happen to me? May I never laugh at someone because he has fallen. Instead, we should always have the fear that I too might fall as he did. I see his fall as a reminder that I too, being human, am in danger of falling. Therefore, I must be watchful.
“And may He grant all of you to believe in Him who rose, to await Him who ascended and is coming again.” “And is coming again”—there is a comma there, so that I do not draw the sentence out. “May He grant...” May He grant and give to all of you “to believe in Him who rose”: may He give you faith in the risen Jesus Christ, and may He also grant you to await Him who ascended into Heaven and who will come again—“and is coming again.”
Take heed: it is a great matter of faith to believe that Christ is the God-Man.
I have said this before. When someone is dying and has no opportunity to make his confession, I ask him three or four questions. Do you believe that God is Trinity? Do you believe that Christ is perfect God and perfect man? These two doctrines are the great doctrines of our faith. Everything depends upon these two—everything. Our salvation also depends upon these two doctrines. For the Son came into the world. And how could He have come into the world if God were not Trinity? And how could He have come into the world if the Son, though a Person of the Trinity, had not become man? It is because the Son became man that I have salvation.
So, if God is not Trinity and the Son did not become man—if God is not Trinity, or if He is Trinity but the Son did not become man—then we have no salvation. All dogmatic teaching, the whole Gospel, everything—our salvation—hangs upon these two doctrines I have spoken to you about. For this reason, my dear ones, when we make the sign of the Cross, pay attention. When we make the sign of the Cross, we bring these three fingers together—some people place their fingers carelessly like this, but that is not right. They should be held evenly together, signifying the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God.
By joining the fingers of my right hand, I confess the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Then, as I make the sign of the Cross, I confess the second doctrine: that the Son died. How could He die? He could die because He became man, for God does not die. Thus, by making the sign of the Precious Cross in this way, I confess these two great doctrines. That is why, if I know and believe this as I make the sign of the Cross, you see, everything before me loses its power: both the dogs barking at me, ready to devour me, and the people preparing to shoot me. I have told you before that charming story. Once, when the Russians were fighting the Poles during the Second World War, a brave Polish officer pulled open his shirt and said to a Russian officer, “Go on, fire! Shoot!” The Russian replied, “I cannot. I am prevented by what is hanging around your neck.” It was the Precious Cross. My dear ones, the Precious Cross is a great and mighty thing.
Let us return to our subject. Pay attention: “He is coming, but not from the earth.” And here, in parentheses: “Make yourself secure, O man, against the deceivers who are to come.” He will not come from the earth, as this Moon does, this Korean you read about in the newspapers. He proclaimed himself to be God, to be Christ. He claims that he is replacing Christ.
The name of God! Take heed, he says: He will not come from the earth, because many deceivers will come into this world. From where, then? He will come from Heaven. “Him who sits on high and is present here with us; Him who sees the order and steadfastness of each person’s faith”—who each one is and how each one conducts himself.
“For because He is now absent in the flesh, do not suppose that He is therefore absent in spirit as well.” Although He is absent in the flesh—that is, from the perception of our senses—do not suppose that He is also absent as God. “He is present here in our midst, hearing what is said about Him, seeing what is conceived within you, and searching the kidneys and the hearts.” He hears what we say about Him. Even now, as we speak, the Lord hears what we say about Him, and He sees what you are thinking in your nous, the spiritual intellect—“what is conceived within you”—and He searches the kidneys and the hearts. “He who even now stands ready”—He who even now is ready—“to present those who are approaching Baptism...”
...all of us, in the Holy Spirit, to the Father, and for the Son to say, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.” To Him be glory unto the ages. Amen.

Ας πούμε, λέει, και μερικές, ας υπενθυμήσουμε ακόμη, να θυμίσουμε μερικές ακόμη τέτοιες ρήσεις από την Αγία Γραφή, μαρτυρίες. «Εν μεν γαρ τω κατά Ματθαίον Ευαγγελίω γέγραπται· Πλην λέγω υμίν», λέει ο Χριστός, «απ' άρτι» —και το είπε αυτό πού; Στον Καϊάφα και στο Συνέδριον— «απ' άρτι όψεσθε τον Υιόν του ανθρώπου καθήμενον εκ δεξιών της δυνάμεως». Ο Θεός λέγεται και Δύναμις και, συνεπώς, εις τα δεξιά της δυνάμεως θα πει εις τα δεξιά του Θεού. Το ίδιο είναι και αυτό «εις τα δεξιά της δόξης του Θεού» που λέγει ο Στέφανος. Είδατε τι είπε εδώ ο Κύριος εις το δικαστήριον;
Τα πνευματικά, τα ουράνια, εκεί που είναι ο Χριστός, εις τα δεξιά του Θεού Πατρός καθήμενος. Εν δε τη προς Εβραίους φησί, λέγει στην προς Εβραίους επιστολή του, «καθαρισμόν των αμαρτιών ποιησάμενος, εκάθισεν εν δεξιά της μεγαλοσύνης εν υψηλοίς». Μεγαλοσύνης. Εκάθισε εν υψηλοίς, δεξιά της Μεγαλοσύνης. Άλλο όνομα του Θεού: Μεγαλοσύνη, Δόξα, Δόξα, Δύναμις, Μεγαλοσύνη. Και πάλι, «προς τίνα δε των Αγγέλων είρηκέ ποτε», από την προς Εβραίους και αυτό, προς ποιον ποτέ εκ των Αγγέλων είπε, «Κάθου εκ δεξιών μου, έως αν θω τους εχθρούς σου υποπόδιον των ποδών σου»;
