Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Christ’s Resurrection as an unshakable historical event confirmed by prophets, eyewitnesses, and especially Paul the Apostle’s conversion and testimony. The surviving catecheses preserve Saint Cyril’s oral teaching and reveal an early Christian method of formation based on attentive listening, examination, and patient verse-by-verse study of Scripture. Against objections to bodily ascent, Saint Cyril appeals to the scriptural account of Habakkuk being transported by an angel to bring food to Daniel in the lions’ den, arguing that Christ ascended by His own divine power.

Dear friends, we are now at paragraph 24 of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fourteenth Catechetical Lecture. Up to this point, he has been examining the great subject of Christ’s Resurrection. Christ’s Resurrection is a fact—an unshakable fact—attested both by eyewitnesses and by the prophets. Thus, both the witnesses of the event and the prophets bear their testimony.
Christ’s Resurrection is now an unshakable fact within history. No one can undermine Christ’s Resurrection. Many have tried, but they have failed. In the end, they only injured themselves in the attempt. Paul’s conversion took place because Christ had risen. He himself would later say, “Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?” And when he made his defense before Festus and then before Herod Agrippa, this was precisely what he declared.
Namely, that...
As he was traveling toward Damascus, he gives a complete account: this and that happened to me, and I saw the risen Jesus. The phenomenon of Paul, then, is otherwise inexplicable; it can be explained only by the fact that Christ rose. We must never forget this. There were, therefore, many witnesses. Yet the Resurrection is also clearly one of the saving causes of our salvation. In his interpretation of the Divine Liturgy, Nicholas Cabasilas says that the events which bring about our salvation are found within it.
The saving causes of our salvation are these great milestones in the life of Christ: the Incarnation, the Crucifixion, the Transfiguration, the Resurrection, and Christ’s Ascension. These are the events that bring about our salvation. Would you like to see this for yourselves? The Divine Liturgy is a summary of the whole Gospel. Search it and see: nowhere in the Liturgy is there even the slightest reference to Christ working miracles—not even the slightest reference.
Christ’s miracles are not the saving causes of our salvation. But the events that do bring about our salvation—the Cross, the Resurrection, and the Ascension—are mentioned again and again. These form the foundation of our salvation.
First comes the Resurrection, which brings about our salvation, as we confess: “I look for the resurrection of the dead.” Why? Because Christ rose. That is why I look for the resurrection of the dead. You see, I too, though dead, shall rise because Christ rose. After the Resurrection, then, comes another event that brings about our salvation.
It is Christ’s Ascension. And I tell you that this too brings about our salvation, because, if we have ever considered it carefully, it is nothing less than an ascent into heaven. We could have risen and remained here on earth. But we shall not remain here on earth. In a wondrous manner, we too shall be taken up into heaven. You may remember what the Apostle Paul says in his First Epistle to the Thessalonians: “We shall be caught up in the clouds, into the air, to meet the Lord.” We shall be caught up into the air, he says. In other words, we shall not live immortally upon the earth.
Then we shall go out to meet Christ as He descends—the same Christ who will come again into the world as Judge. Christ will descend to receive us. Yet the picture given there is not complete, because the Apostle Paul is not concerned in that passage with sinners. When he writes his epistle to the Thessalonians, he is speaking about the devout. That is why he says, “We who remain,” meaning those of us who are still alive at that time, shall be caught up, and so forth. In other words, what follows is spoken about us, though this does not mean that...
sinners will be ignored, as though they were simply to remain on earth. No, dear friends; they will be led into Hell, although Holy Scripture does not tell us so in that particular passage. It speaks only of the faithful, saying that we shall be caught up into the air to meet the Lord—that is, we too shall experience an ascent. Whatever is predicated of Christ, whatever is said of Him, is also predicated of the faithful. We must not forget this. Christ died, and we too shall die: “It is appointed for men to die once.” Christ rose, and we too shall rise. Christ ascended, and we too shall ascend.
Christ entered His Kingdom, and we too shall enter it. This is why He became perfect man: to open the way for us, not as God, but as man. For it is Christ’s human nature that is emphasized here. His humanity opens the way for us. He is the New Adam, who leads us into the Kingdom of God, into the calm and sheltered harbor of the Kingdom of God. And so, having completed his teaching on the Lord’s Resurrection, Saint Cyril now comes to the subject of Christ’s Ascension. But an incident occurred which...
was preserved in the Catechetical Lectures. Let us consider it. It was fortunate for the catechumens of that time, but unfortunate for us. You will see why. Paragraph 24: “The sequence of the teaching of the faith urged us to speak also about the Ascension. But by the providence of God’s grace, despite our weakness, you heard a most thorough account yesterday, on Sunday, when, by the dispensation of divine grace, the appointed sequence of readings at the assembly contained the account of our Savior’s ascent into heaven.” He is saying that the continuation of the teaching of the faith had on its program “to speak also about the Ascension.” Naturally, the proper sequence is to speak about the Ascension after the Resurrection. Yet the grace of God arranged matters so that yesterday, to the best of our ability—to the extent permitted by our weakness, as Saint Cyril says—the subject was covered. Yesterday was Sunday, so today was Monday. What a coincidence! Yesterday was Sunday, and therefore today, as we speak after some sixteen hundred years, is Monday. It is a striking detail.
By this coincidence, God had arranged for the readings they heard and interpreted to refer to Christ’s Ascension. So, Saint Cyril says, we spoke about these things yesterday. This was fortunate for the catechumens then, but unfortunate for us, because Saint Cyril will not tell us very much about them here. Before going on, however, I would like to comment on this short passage I have read to you and point out a few details. Even such technical details, so to speak—“we discussed this yesterday, so today we shall not...”
say very much,” and so forth—often have value when they come from the Saints. Or, if you prefer, examining them shows respect for the text, even when it comes from the ancient Greeks or from any old document. Respect means seeking to understand how people thought and conducted themselves in those days. We should not simply pass over such details, but look upon them all with respect. What does he tell us here? Yesterday, on Sunday, there had been an assembly. A little later, he will tell us that the whole multitude of the faithful was present. You catechumens were there as well.
Saint Cyril, then, preached on Sunday. The sermon was addressed to the faithful, though naturally the catechumens were also able to hear it. Monday, therefore, must have been reserved especially for the catechumens. But there is something else as well. The entire Fourteenth Catechetical Lecture cannot have been delivered in a single lesson. Otherwise, how could there be this interruption here, where he says, “We spoke about these things yesterday,” as he now turns to the Ascension? A single catechetical lecture must therefore have been delivered in several sessions. Naturally so, because a catechesis of the length usually found in each of these lectures could not have been delivered in one lesson.
That would have been impossible. Let me also tell you that Saint Cyril did not write these Catechetical Lectures himself; stenographers recorded them. As scholars of Patristic literature tell us, it appears that Saint Cyril may perhaps have looked over them briefly afterward, once they had been written down. This is why the lectures preserve the liveliness of spoken language. Saint Cyril spoke, and the stenographers wrote. Do you understand? But there is something else. Notice what he calls Christianity: faith. “The sequence of the teaching of the faith.” It is called faith.
And one of the names given to Christians was “the faithful”—a believer. This is very important, because it shows how a person must approach Christianity. The question of faith is fundamental. Christianity can be approached only through faith. Here is another point. He says, “At the assembly, in the appointed sequence of readings.” This refers to readings from Holy Scripture that were explained and interpreted consecutively. It is what we do with the Book of Acts: we take a book of Holy Scripture, explain a portion, and then stop.
The next time, we continue. This method is thoroughly ecclesial. I want to emphasize this so that you may know it. At one time I was searching for a method of presenting the Word of God. Indeed, I was not yet a clergyman when I began searching for such a method. Around 1957, or perhaps a little earlier, Greek printing houses began publishing the Greek Patrology for the first time in Greek history. I began reading what the earliest ecclesiastical writers and Fathers had written—Origen in particular, whose works appear in volume eight.
It was volume eight of the Patrology published by BEPES. When I saw how he analyzed Holy Scripture, particularly the Gospel according to Luke, I was astonished. I said, “Here is the method!” It is well known, however, that in later years the method of the formal oration came to prevail. What is such an oration? It means taking a subject, searching through many passages of Holy Scripture, and constructing a treatment of that subject. This is called an oration. As a literary form, it was taken from rhetoric outside the Church, we might say. Of course, such orations eventually came to be used mainly for encomiums.
We offer an encomium for a feast, for a Saint, and so forth. We deliver an oration. But these orations retain a certain grandiloquence and contain many rhetorical flourishes. They amount to a celebration: their teaching character is ceremonial and festive. They do not have the character of a lesson, through which we become disciples and truly learn. The proper way to present the Word of God is different. We take the Word of God phrase by phrase and word by word, advancing carefully through the sacred texts. John Chrysostom and other Fathers worked in precisely this way.
This is why we have commentaries on Holy Scripture, on both the Old and the New Testaments, written by great Fathers of the Church. These have been preserved and show us how the work of interpreting Holy Scripture should be carried out for pastoral purposes. You may ask, “What importance does all this have for us?” First, it helps you understand that the work being done here is thoroughly ecclesial; and second, it teaches you to study in the same way yourselves. At home, too, you should study in this way. We should take the Word of God and examine it word by word, instead of skimming here and there, but rather...
we must wrestle with the text and press it closely until it yields its meaning to us. Wisdom loves to be searched out and demands this labor, as the Wisdom of Sirach says: it tests us and is itself searched out. In other words, Wisdom makes a person labor so that he will wrestle with the text until Wisdom gives herself to him. This is very important. Those are the few comments I wished to make on what I read to you. Let us continue: “What was said was spoken chiefly for everyone, for the whole assembly of the faithful together, but especially for you.” These things were said for everyone, but in a very particular way they were said for you, the catechumen.
“Your attentiveness to what was said is now to be tested.” Saint Cyril says that it must now be discovered how carefully you listened to what I was saying. How attentive were you? Were you asleep, or were you paying attention? That is now the question. There is, indeed, something that no longer exists among us Christians. When the Church taught, she also examined you to see how much you had learned, just as a school does.
At that time, after the catechist had worked with the catechumens, the bishop would question them: “You, tell me this; and you, tell me that.” If someone did not know the catechesis, his Baptism was postponed until the next occasion. If it was Christmas, for example, as we are now approaching Christmas, and the Baptism of those coming to the faith was to take place, he would be told: “Ah, you do not know these things well enough. You must learn them. Your Baptism, then, is postponed until Pascha.” Do you see? Today, however, we examine nothing at all. If we were to hand out paper and pencils and say, “Write,” it would seem strange to you.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses do this, my dear friends. Did you know that they do this? They know that this is the only way a person truly learns—not merely in an academic way, but as a disciple. The ancient Church rejected academicism in favor of discipleship. The Jehovah’s Witnesses have their own reasons for being interested in this. You see, they borrowed the method from the ancient Church. What method? Discipleship. If you have ever seen one of their books, you will know that at the bottom of every page there are questions. Those questions concern the page you have just read. The text is numbered, and it asks you, for example...
“When was Solomon’s Temple built?” Beside the relevant passage in the text there may be the number three, and below, at number three, it asks, “When was Solomon’s Temple built?” What does this make you do? It makes you return from the questions to the text, so that you may grasp what you have read, rather than passing over it quickly, and so that you may learn it. The Jehovah’s Witnesses use this as a method. That is why even uneducated people who are drawn away from among our Orthodox Christians by them know what they have learned inside and out. Is it not a pity that we hear such important things—things that are Orthodox and true—and yet they simply pass by, scatter, and are lost? Is that not a pity?
You might say, “I would never do that,” but suppose, as the saying goes, that we had paper and pencils here. Some people do take notes. Look at that little child with the glasses. How old are you? There you are—he is in the second grade and is taking notes. Now you may ask, “But what can children possibly write?” Well, I am ready to show you notes kept by small children here—yes, notes they have taken during these talks. You would be amazed at how they identify the main points of what they hear. That is why I do not send children away from the talks. I fear that in the end they may be the only ones who are benefited, though of course I do not wish to offend the adults. But we adults have not even learned to hold...
Holy Scripture in our hands, so that we might at least follow the text as it is being read. Let us continue: “For you have seen that the course of the faith teaches you to believe in Him who rose on the third day, ascended into the heavens, and sat at the right hand of the Father.” That is, the course and continuity of the faith teaches us that we must believe that Christ rose and ascended into the heavens. “I suppose, then, that you especially remember the explanation.” I must remind you of that interpretation. “Nevertheless, even now you shall be reminded in passing of what was said.” In passing, then, we might say...
I shall remind you of what was said. When was it said? Yesterday. This is why I told you that Saint Cyril is giving a very brief review of the homily he delivered the previous day, while we do not possess a complete picture of everything he said. “Remember what is clearly written in the Psalms: ‘God has gone up with a shout.’” This is Psalm 46:6. Remember that it is written that God went up with a shout. Who is shouting for joy? The angels. He continues: “Remember also that the divine powers said to one another”—the angels speaking among themselves—“Lift up your gates, O rulers.” Psalm 23:7. Lift up the gates, O rulers. Why? So that the Lord of Glory may pass through. “Who is the Lord of Glory?” they ask. It is a beautiful dialogue exchanged among the angels, revealing the Ascension of Christ. “Remember also the Psalm which says: ‘He ascended on high; He led captivity captive.’” This is Psalm 67:19, a passage rich in meaning. What is this height? First, it is the height of the Cross.
Then what is the captivity? He took Satan captive. A second height is heaven, to which Christ ascended, and from there He gives His gifts to mankind. “He gave gifts to men,” it says. These are the gifts of the Holy Spirit. “Remember the prophet who said...” Listen to what Amos says here. It is an astonishing passage, Amos 9:6: “He who builds His ascent into heaven.” Why does it say, “He who builds”?
It seems strange. Elsewhere it says, “He who makes His angels spirits,” and so forth, “and His ministers a flame of fire.” “He who makes” means “He who creates.” This means, then, that the angels are created beings. Here it says that He built, or created, His ascent into heaven. It is well known that everything within the Godhead is uncreated. God is uncreated. The Father is uncreated, and the Son is uncreated. The begetting of the Son is uncreated; the Holy Spirit is uncreated; the divine glory and the divine uncreated energies are uncreated. None of these is something God creates...
outside Himself. Everything that is in God Himself belongs to the Godhead. Why, then, does it say here, “He who builds His ascent into heaven”? Quite simply, because it is referring to His human body. This is very beautiful, for it shows that God did not ascend as God, since the Word is present everywhere. Rather, it was the human nature of God the Word that ascended—the human nature with which the divine Word had united Himself. Do you see the prophet’s precision? “He who builds,” and so forth. Saint Cyril continues, “All that was said yesterday in answer to the objections of the Jews.” Evidently, then...
Saint Cyril had spoken about these things. And now, beloved, we enter paragraph twenty-five. Here Saint Cyril will say a few things concerning the Ascension of Christ: “For when some oppose the Savior’s ascent as much as they can, remember what was said about the transportation of Habakkuk. For if Habakkuk was transported by an angel, carried by the hair of his head, how much more shall the Master of both prophets and angels, having mounted a cloud from the Mount of Olives, make His ascent into the heavens by His own power?” He is mightier. How beautiful!
The point is this: the Jews object, “How did He ascend into heaven?” The rationalism of many philosophers, including Plato himself, might also raise the same objection—although I believe that if Plato had lived in the time of Christ, he would have been the first to believe. Socrates would have been the first to believe. Nevertheless, according to Platonic theory and philosophy, it is impossible for matter to ascend into heaven. How can a human body ascend when the realms of heaven are inhabited by pure spirits? Until recently, science too might have raised this objection. Now it no longer does.
Could a human being overcome gravity, the earth’s pull, and rise upward? Science no longer asks that today. To begin with, modern science has learned humility and refuses to rule anything out. In the last century it ruled out many things and suffered the consequences. When science rules something out, it loses the possibility of investigating the matter again. But by allowing many avenues of research, it discovers new things. This is a condition for possessing a scientific outlook. You cannot become a scientist—that is, you cannot think scientifically...
if you always rule things out. Even if you set something aside for a time because it does not serve your present purpose, or for some other reason, you put it to one side; you do not reject it. At some point, you return and examine it again. Do you know how many times science has gone back to what it once threw away?
Does a craftsman throw away screws and little fasteners? Of course not. A good craftsman keeps boxes under his workbench and puts into them the things he might otherwise have discarded. And how often—ask any craftsman and he will tell you; I know this from experience, for I have done it myself—how often does he search through those discarded things to find some screw or little fastener that he needs? In the same way, science throws nothing away. It returns and investigates again. That is what a truly scientific outlook means. What, then, would science have said some years ago, before the airplane, the rocket, or the hot-air balloon?
Could a human body, without any other assistance, rise upward? And yet, beloved, Saint Cyril says: search the Scriptures, and you will see that there are similar cases. To whom are you speaking? You are speaking to a Jew. So what will you use?
Holy Scripture. You will silence his objection from Holy Scripture. Of course, neither do we need to appeal to science or philosophy. For the moment, they are unnecessary; we shall turn to Holy Scripture. Is the Ascension of Christ entirely without precedent?
Should we therefore say, even for a moment, that it is impossible? We could say that nothing is impossible for God, even if it were entirely unique. Yet we would not need to say only that, especially since it is not without precedent. Saint Cyril now mentions an event that I shall relate to you briefly. It is found in the Book of Daniel, in the chapter concerning Bel. As is well known, Daniel was a Jewish captive in Babylon. After he had shown the king that Bel—a serpent—was not God, he killed it simply by feeding it small cakes made of pitch, fat, and hair. You see? The serpent ate them and burst open. Then Daniel said to the king, “Do you see?”
“You worship something that can die, that can burst apart.” The Babylonians became very angry, because this had been preceded by another incident involving that temple, where the priests would go in and eat the food offered to the patron deity of Babylon, and so on. So the Babylonians were furious with Daniel and threatened the king’s life unless he put Daniel to death. A common method at that time was also a way of feeding the lions: there was a den with seven lions, and every day they threw in two people—human bodies—and two sheep. Just imagine it; it was a dreadful thing.
They seized Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. And behold the miracle! They had even left the lions without food. Yet the lions did not harm Daniel. He remained in the den for six days—six whole days. Though ravenously hungry, the lions did not touch him. Meanwhile, in Judea—how far, indeed, is Judea from Babylon? Let us take the distance in a straight line, since that is what concerns us. Jerusalem is here, while Babylon is over there in Mesopotamia, in present-day Iraq, somewhere near the Persian Gulf.
It is several hundred kilometers—about seven or eight hundred, if I am not mistaken. There was a man named Habakkuk. Take note: this was not the Prophet Habakkuk. He was simply a man. He is called a prophet, but he is not the well-known prophet counted among the Twelve Minor Prophets. This man had fields, and it was harvesttime, so he had laborers working for him. He needed to take them their midday meal. He cooked the food, kneaded the dough, took the loaves, loaded everything onto his back, and set out for his fields to feed the workers. On the way, he met someone.
The stranger asked him, “Where are you going?” He replied, “I am going to the field, to my workers.” “No, do not take the food to the workers. You must take it to Babylon, to the lions’ den, where Daniel is.” Habakkuk answered, “I have never been to Babylon. I do not know any lions’ den, nor do I know Daniel.” Before Habakkuk had even finished speaking, the stranger—who was an angel—seized him by the hair at the front of his head, though he was still loaded down with all those things. The angel took hold of him here and, in an instant, carried him above the lions’ den. Listen to that! In an instant—immediately!
He brought him there with a rushing sound. That word means a noise or rushing sound. So the angel brought him above the lions’ den, and Habakkuk cried out, “Daniel!” Daniel heard a man calling from above, and Habakkuk lowered the loaves and the food down into the den. Daniel glorified God because He had sent him food and bread. The next day, the king went to mourn his friend Daniel, his great counselor. Standing above the den, he cried, “Oh, Daniel, Daniel!” And from below Daniel called back:
“O king, I am alive!” Then the king brought him up from the den. He declared that Daniel’s God is the true God, and he threw in those who had slandered Daniel—or rather, those who had accused him. And the lions, my dear friends, caught them before they even reached the ground and tore them apart. That is one point. Here is another: why did the angel take this man while he was on his way to the field? So that the miracle might be confirmed. Someone might say, “But the workers were left hungry.” Yet that is precisely what makes it so striking and confirms the miracle. The angel also brought Habakkuk back to the very same spot. Obviously, he must have reached the field empty-handed and certainly somewhat late.
He must have told the workers what had happened—how he had suddenly been carried through the air with such speed. We therefore have a precedent for the Ascension of Christ. Pay close attention: Christ is not somewhere within the universe; He is in His Kingdom. And the Kingdom of God is not within the universe. Try, if you can, to cross the universe. You know that to travel from one end to the other would require twenty billion light-years, even if you were moving at the speed of light—
the speed of light, three hundred million meters per second. Millions of kilometers? No, three hundred thousand kilometers. Yes, I said it correctly: three hundred million meters per second. And you would have to travel for twenty billion years. Yet Christ reached His Kingdom in an instant. Do you know the only point at which He delayed? It was while He was rising slowly within the disciples’ field of vision, so that they might delight in beholding Him and bear witness to His ascent. There He rose slowly, very slowly.
But once they could no longer see Him, the angels said to the disciples, “Why do you stand looking up?” The Lord was in His Kingdom in an instant. How did He pass through this universe, this material universe, in His human nature? There is another incident as well. Saint Cyril does not relate it, but I will tell it to you. Why? What does he say next? Do you know? He says, “Remember the miracles that are similar.” Remember and recount similar miracles. That is why he does not mention this one directly, but merely alludes to it. It concerns Philip the Deacon. In the Acts of the Apostles—now we are in the New Testament—the following occurred. The Holy Spirit spoke to Philip the Deacon, one of the seven deacons, the man who had four daughters who lived as virgins,
as we mentioned last Sunday in our study of Acts. “Rise and go toward the south,” He said, toward Gaza. The road there was deserted; not a soul was in sight. It was an empty country road. Philip wondered, “Why did the Spirit of God tell me to come here?” While he was thinking this, he saw a distinguished carriage approaching from behind, carrying that well-known Ethiopian official, a servant of Candace, queen of Ethiopia. “Candace” was what we might today call “Pharaoh”: it was a general title, not her personal name.
He came from somewhere in Ethiopia. As the chariot was about to pass Philip, the Holy Spirit said to him, “Go near and join yourself to it.” So Stephen—or rather, Philip—ran up and took hold of it. He saw the Ethiopian reading Isaiah. The man was a proselyte. Philip asked him the familiar question, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man turned toward him and said, “How could I understand unless someone guided me?” Philip then explained to him the things concerning Jesus Christ and baptized him. “What prevents me,” the man asked, “from being baptized?” “Nothing prevents you, if you believe that Christ is the Son of God—that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Nothing prevents you.”
Here we even have a rudimentary confession of faith, an early form of the Creed. Later it became fuller because heresies arose. They then went down to a place beside the road where there was some water, and Philip baptized the eunuch there. Then Philip was caught away by the Spirit of God, just as Habakkuk had been caught away when he was going to Babylon, and the Spirit carried him somewhere around Gaza or Tyre—I do not remember exactly. Scripture says that the eunuch did not see Philip again. Suddenly Philip vanished from before his eyes. He was gone!
The Holy Spirit caught him away and carried him such a great distance. From there Philip the Deacon continued his sacred mission. So here, I would say, is another kind of ascent. But let us continue: “Remember the miracles that are similar, but reserve the preeminence for the Master of those who work miracles.” Whatever miracle you recount is certainly great, but in His Ascension Christ always retains the preeminence. “For the others are carried, but He carries all things.” How beautiful that is! All the others are carried by the Spirit of God or by an angel.
But the Lord carries all things and is carried by no one. “Remember that Enoch was translated, but Jesus ascended.” Beautiful! Remember that Enoch was translated. Recall the Old Testament: “He was well pleasing to God and was not found, because God translated him.” So Enoch was indeed translated—but where did he go? To where was he translated? We might say that something similar apparently happened to the Prophet Elijah: he was taken somewhere in the heavens. But we will say no more, because Saint Cyril will explain this further below, at least with regard to the Prophet Elijah. The Lord, however, was not translated; He ascended.
That is, He passed beyond the universe and entered His Kingdom. “Remember what was said yesterday concerning Elijah”—what Saint Cyril had said about Elijah the day before. What a pity that we do not know exactly what he said! What did he mention about Elijah? “Elijah was taken up in a chariot of fire, but Christ’s chariot was ten thousand times greater, with thousands rejoicing.” Elijah, he says, “was caught up in a chariot.” But Christ’s escort was countless times greater than any chariot, for the angels accompanied Him and acclaimed Him. And what I am telling you is found in Psalm 67, verse 18. It is prophetic.
Elijah was taken up east of the Jordan, but Christ ascended east of the brook Kidron. Elijah was taken up “as if into heaven,” whereas Jesus ascended “into heaven.” Twice, my dear friends, the Fourth Book of Kingdoms says of the Prophet Elijah, “He went up as if into heaven.” Pay attention: “as if into heaven”—that is, somewhere in the heavens. Which heaven? Saint Cyril will tell us shortly. But Christ, he says, did not ascend “as if into heaven”; He ascended “into heaven.” He entered His Kingdom. “And Elijah said, ‘A double portion of the Holy Spirit shall be given to you.’” His disciple Elisha, you know, begged to receive a double portion of Elijah’s prophetic gift and grace. Elijah told him, “If you see my ascent”—so there was a possibility that he might not see it—“and if you take up my mantle.” Elisha saw the prophet rising and witnessed his ascent, and he took up the mantle. Elijah no longer needed it; it was a sheepskin, a garment of leather. Elisha took it, and then received the prophetic gift. This is not the time to explain what “double” means, though it is significant. “Elijah said to his disciple, ‘A double portion of the Holy Spirit shall be given to you.’”
“But Christ granted His own disciples such an abundant enjoyment of the grace of the Holy Spirit that they not only possessed it within themselves, but through the laying on of their hands also imparted communion in it to those who believed.” Christ did not need to give His disciples a mantle so that they might receive some gift. He bestowed the Holy Spirit upon them in great abundance. And not only that: through ordination, the disciples were able to impart the gifts of the Holy Spirit to their successors. This is the preeminence of Christ over Elijah. Paragraph twenty-six: “And when you contend in this way with the Jews, when you have defeated them by using comparable examples”—that is, when you engage them with similar arguments and examples and leave them without an answer—“then proceed to the preeminence of the Savior’s glory: the others are servants, but He is the Son of God.” Those others were taken up as servants, as if into heaven or somewhere else; but He ascended as the Son of God. “And you will also remember this preeminence when you reflect that a servant of Christ was caught up to the third heaven.” Here a servant of Christ was caught up. Who was it? Paul. How far? To the third heaven. “For if Elijah reached only the first heaven, while Paul reached the third heaven, Paul therefore obtained the greater honor.”
Remarkable! Elijah was taken somewhere in the heavens. Where? Pay attention: within the universe. Elijah is not in the Kingdom of God; he is within the universe. Paul ascended as far as the third heaven. And do you know what the third heaven is? Paradise. The realm of the spirits is outside the universe—the realm of the spirits. Pay attention to this point. That is the third heaven. Paul himself says, “I know a man,” and so forth, “who was caught up to the third heaven.” He himself “was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words.” The Apostle Paul himself identifies the third heaven with Paradise. Elijah is not in Paradise, but was taken “as if into heaven.”
Consequently, even the servants of Christ are greater than Elijah, Elisha, Habakkuk, and the others. “Do not be ashamed of your Apostles.” Do not be embarrassed or put to shame because of your Apostles—the Apostles of Christ. “They are not inferior to Moses, nor do they rank second to the prophets; rather, they are good among the good, and better than the good.” The Apostles are good together with the good, and better than the good. “For Elijah was taken up into heaven, but Peter holds the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.”
Elijah ascended somewhere in the heavens, but Peter holds the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. See the difference, for he heard Christ say, “Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in the heavens.” “Elijah reached heaven alone, but Paul reached both heaven and Paradise.” He ascended into heaven and into Paradise, the third heaven that I mentioned to you. “For it was fitting that the disciples of Jesus should receive far more abundant grace,” because the disciples of Christ had to receive grace many times more abundantly.
“Inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.” He heard words that not only may not be spoken, but cannot be uttered by a human mouth. These are uncreated words. You know, the words of the Gospel are created; they are created words, for we print them, and so on. But the words Paul heard were uncreated. That is why “it is not lawful” means not merely that they may not be spoken, but that it is impossible to utter them. “Paul then came down again from above, not because he was unworthy to remain in the third heaven, but so that, after partaking of things beyond human experience, he might descend with honor, preach Christ, die for His sake, and receive the crown of martyrdom.” Paul came down again.
Not because he was unworthy, but so that he might preach Christ, undergo martyrdom, and receive the crown of martyrdom. “Let us pass over the remaining arguments, which were presented yesterday at the Sunday gathering; for intelligent hearers who are fellow disciples, a mere reminder is sufficient.” For those disciples who have understanding, what has been said is enough. And so, my dear friends, I believe that what has been said is also more than sufficient for us—for those who truly have eagerness and willingness. What the Word of God tells us is indeed more than sufficient for us to know the content of our faith and to conform our lives to it.

εκτίστηκε ο Ναός του Σολομώντος; Σου βάζει όμως δίπλα, ας πούμε, έχει τον αριθμό τρία μέσα στο κείμενο, βάζει το τρία και σου λέει εκεί «Πότε εκτίστηκε ο Ναός του Σολομώντος;». Τι σε κάνει; Σε κάνει να ανατρέχεις από τις ερωτήσεις στο κείμενο, για να συνειδητοποιήσεις και να μην περνάς έτσι στα γρήγορα εκείνο που διαβάζεις και να το μάθεις. Αυτό το έχουνε ως μέθοδο οι χιλιασταί. Γι' αυτό οι χιλιασταί, αγράμματοι άνθρωποι, αυτοί που παρασύρονται από τους Ορθοδόξους χριστιανούς μας, αυτά που μάθανε τουλάχιστον τα ξέρουν απ' έξω κι ανακατωτά. Δεν είναι κρίμα εμείς να ακούμε τόσο σπουδαία πράγματα, και να είναι Ορθόδοξα και σωστά, και να περνάνε, να σκορπίζουν, να χάνονται; Δεν είναι κρίμα;
Κατόπιν, ποια είναι η αιχμαλωσία; Αιχμαλώτισε τον σατανά. Μετά, ένα δεύτερον ύψος είναι ο ουρανός, που ανήλθε ο Χριστός και δίδει τα δώρα Του εις τους ανθρώπους. «Έδωκε δόματα τοις ανθρώποις», λέγει. Είναι τα χαρίσματα του Αγίου Πνεύματος. «Μνημόνευε του Προφήτου του ειπόντος». Ακούστε εδώ τι λέγει ο Αμώς. Είναι ένα καταπληκτικό χωρίο, 9, 6 στον Αμώς: «Ο οικοδομών εις τον ουρανόν την ανάβασιν αυτού». Γιατί λέγει «ο οικοδομών»;
αν αποκλείεις πάντα κάτι. Και αν το αποκλείσεις για μια στιγμή, γιατί δεν σε εξυπηρετεί, γιατί δεν ξέρω τι, το βάζεις στην άκρη, δεν το απορρίπτεις και κάποια στιγμή ξαναγυρίζεις να το ξανακοιτάξεις. Ξέρετε πόσες φορές η επιστήμη ξαναγύρισε στα σκουπίδια της;
Ο μάστορας πετάει βίδες, βιδάκια; Τι; Δεν πετάει βίδες, βιδάκια. Ο καλός ο μάστορας, κάτω από τον πάγκο, έχει κάποια κουτιά και βάζει αυτά που θα πετούσε. Και πόσες φορές —ρωτήστε μάστορες, θα σας το πουν, έχω και ιδίαν αντίληψιν πράγματος, το έκανα και εγώ αυτό— θα σας πουν πόσες φορές ανατρέχουν σ' αυτά τα σκουπίδια για να βρουν κάποια βίδα και κάποιο βιδάκι που τους χρειάζεται. Έτσι και η επιστήμη δεν πετάει τίποτε. Ξαναγυρίζει, ξαναερευνά. Αυτό θα πει αληθινή νοοτροπία επιστημονική. Τι θα έλεγε, λοιπόν, η επιστήμη πριν από κάποια χρόνια, πριν έρθει το αεροπλάνο, ο πύραυλος, το αερόστατο;
Μπορούσε, άραγε, ένα ανθρώπινο σώμα, χωρίς άλλη βοήθεια, να ανεβαίνει προς τα πάνω; Κι όμως, αγαπητοί, λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλος, ερεύνησε τη Γραφή, να δεις ότι υπάρχουν και παρόμοιες περιπτώσεις. Σε ποιον θα μιλήσεις; Θα μιλήσεις σε Ιουδαίον. Λοιπόν, τι θα χρησιμοποιήσεις;
Αγία Γραφή. Θα τον αποστομώσεις από την Αγία Γραφή. Βέβαια, και εμείς δεν έχουμε ανάγκη να χρησιμοποιήσουμε ούτε την επιστήμη ούτε τη φιλοσοφία. Δεν μας χρειάζονται για μια στιγμή, αλλά θα ανατρέχουμε στην Αγία Γραφή. Αποτελεί μοναδικότητα η Ανάληψη του Χριστού;
