Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Christ’s Resurrection as the foundation of the resurrection of the dead and therefore of Christian salvation. The angels, myrrh-bearing women, guards, Peter, John, Thomas, and the other Apostles provide personal testimony through seeing, hearing, and touching the risen Christ. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Tabitha’s restoration to life, and the continuing power of Jesus Christ’s name are presented as enduring witnesses that the incarnate Son of God truly rose from the dead.

My beloved, we are now at paragraph 22 of Saint Cyril’s Fourteenth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns the Resurrection of Christ.
Last time, we said that if there is no Resurrection of Christ, there is no resurrection of the dead. And conversely, following the Apostle Paul’s reasoning, if we say there is no resurrection of the dead, then in reality we also deny the Resurrection of Christ, which is firmly established both prophetically and historically.
And here prophecy together with history provides the chief and strongest confirmation, one that withstands the passage of time and convinces.
For if the dead are not raised, then neither has Christ been raised; and then our faith is in vain and our preaching is also in vain, as the Apostle Paul says. This is of fundamental importance, because it is the joyful message. For what is redemption? What else can it be but the resurrection of the dead? Salvation means that I regain what the last enemy took from me. And the last enemy is death. The Apostle Paul says, “The last enemy is death.” If, then, I deny the resurrection of the dead—deny the undoing of death, which takes from me, or rather separates, my soul from my body—then I cannot say that death has been defeated, either for me or by Christ. If that were possible, what would salvation mean? It means being made whole; the Greek word comes from the words meaning “whole” and “to save.” So, to be saved means to be whole and complete. It means that I must receive back what the last enemy seized from me—namely, my body. I must receive it back, and my soul must be reunited with my body. That is what salvation means. Therefore, the heart of salvation is the resurrection of the dead, which is established by the Resurrection of Christ; for if Christ is not raised, then there is no resurrection of the dead. I beg you: never let this point escape us.
Let us guard it as the apple of our eye. Christ is risen, and we too shall rise. And since we shall rise, we must live as God desires. Indeed, at the end of that famous chapter—the fifteenth chapter of the Apostle Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, which concerns the resurrection of the dead—he concludes by saying, “Be steadfast and immovable.” Steadfast and immovable. A steadfast person is one who has been firmly established, who stands securely, who has a foundation and is not shaken. “Be steadfast and immovable,” he says, knowing that your labor will not be in vain. What labor does he mean? The labor of the spiritual life.
The labor of a Christian life lived according to the Gospel. The Resurrection, then, is a foundational matter. That is why we insist upon it so strongly. Those who sought to attack Christianity did not strike at its fringes, but at its very heart. And the heart of Christianity is the Resurrection of Christ. If we attack the Resurrection of Christ, nothing in Christianity is left standing. It can then very easily be turned into a philosophical system. This is why Saint Cyril rightly offers so many proofs here, one after another,
in order to establish the Resurrection of Christ firmly. We are therefore at paragraph 22, in which he calls upon witnesses. If you deny it, he says, many witnesses will rise against you: human beings and angels, and even inanimate creation. Thus he calls upon the tomb, the garden, the night, the full moon, the stone of the tomb, and the silver the soldiers received to spread the lie and slander, and so forth. He calls upon all of them as witnesses. You may ask, “Is this perhaps a poetic device?” No, my beloved, it is not. It is a marvelous approach, and these truly are witnesses, because Saint Cyril has a precedent: Isaiah. When Isaiah—or rather, God—speaks to His people through Isaiah’s mouth and pen, whom will He call as witnesses to what God is about to say, so that He may be heard? Whom will He call? Whom can He call? Before Him stands a rebellious and disobedient people. How, then, will He summon witnesses?
God speaks to the people, and if the people disobey, God will call the witnesses to testify: “I spoke to you.” And do you know whom God calls? This is the opening of Isaiah. After the heading, which tells us who the author is, the period in which God spoke, and so forth, he begins the introduction to the main subject. And this introduction is an invocation of witnesses. It is exceedingly beautiful and poetic. Listen to how it begins: “Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth.”
The Greek verb translated “give ear” literally contains the word for “ears”; even the Greek word for an earring comes from it. It means “to listen.” It is another verb that enriches the expression: “Hear, O heaven, and listen closely, O earth, so that you may hear Me.” When he says “heaven,” what heaven does he mean? First of all, of course, the angelic world. But he also means the inanimate creation: the moon, the sun, and the stars. He means what we call the heavens, the starry sky—the universe.
He says, “O heaven, I call you as a witness. And you, O earth, open your ears wide and hear what I am about to say.” What earth? Everything upon the earth: the stones, plants, mountains, waters, trees—everything. I call them all as witnesses
to what I am about to say. “The ox knows the manger of its lord, and the donkey”—to put it more simply—“knows its lord, the one who created it.” In other words, the ox knows its manger.
We let the oxen and cows go out to graze, and when the time comes, they return to their manger, to their feeding trough. The cows and beasts of burden know their manger. The donkey knows the one who created it; it knows and recognizes its master. “But My people have not known Me”; My own people do not recognize Me. This opening is exceedingly beautiful, and it is not merely poetic at all, because the whole creation will stand as a witness on the day of judgment to everything that historically took place in the incarnate Son of God,
against those who did not believe. So, with this brief introduction—founded upon the Word of God, namely, upon Isaiah’s prologue—I now proceed to Saint Cyril, lest you say that he is indulging in poetic sentiment and that all these things have little significance. Perhaps calling the moon as a witness would carry no weight in a court of law. In court you cannot say, “The moon is my witness.” But when great matters are at stake—matters that will serve as evidence on the day of judgment—the moon is indeed a witness. It is a witness. Saint Cyril now says:
“Many are the witnesses to the Resurrection of the Savior.” There are many witnesses to the Savior’s Resurrection. He says this especially to rebuke the Jews who persisted in their unbelief. And to those who disbelieve he says, “The night and the light of the full moon; for it was the sixteenth night.” First of all, the night itself bears witness that Christ was raised—and specifically the sixteenth night. The Greek word means “the sixteenth.” Why does he call it the sixteenth night? Because Passover was celebrated on the fifteenth day of the month of Nisan. And it is known that Passover that year, the fifteenth of Nisan, fell on the Sabbath, so it was a double feast.
It was both the Sabbath and Passover. Christ was raised on the day after the fifteenth of Nisan—that is, after the Jewish Passover—which for us is Sunday. It is the Lord’s Day, and that is why it is called Sunday in Greek. This is also why it is called the first day. Sunday is the first day of the week, followed by the second day, Monday, and then the third day, Tuesday, because the counting begins with Sunday. Consequently, the Sabbath is the seventh day. Here we have “the first day of the week,” and it was the sixteenth day of the month of Nisan. That is why he says that the night—the sixteenth night—is a witness.
On the night when Christ was raised, the light—that is, the moon—was at its fullest: it was a full moon. “The rock of the tomb which received Him” also still stands as a witness: the rock that was hewn out, and within which the body of the risen Lord was received. “And the stone shall stand in opposition before the Jews, for it saw the Lord.” We might say that this is personification, and yet the stone is not merely personified. This is not personification used as a literary or poetic device.
I explained this to you earlier. This stone, which was brought to cover Christ’s tomb, saw Christ and “shall stand in opposition before the Jews.” On the day of judgment it will stand before them and say, “I saw Jesus risen from the dead.” To put it simply, creation will stand as a witness to the Resurrection of Christ. You may ask me, “Wait—how can creation stand as a witness?”
This is difficult to grasp. That is why I told you: the language here is not poetic, nor are these things said by poetic license. This is not literature. We know that in literature we can embellish things and say whatever we wish. That is mere verbalism—words, words, cheap words. But here these are not empty words. And here is why. John the Evangelist says in the book of the Apocalypse, “And I saw, and behold, a new heaven and a new earth.” A new heaven and a new earth. How did they become new? How did this happen? In the same book of the Apocalypse, Christ says, “Behold, I make all things new.” See!
I make them new. But how could heaven and earth become new if Jesus, who makes them new, were not God incarnate and therefore the Risen One? Thus, for creation to be made new, the One who made it is Himself made new in His humanity: He died and rose again. And so the transformation of creation from corruptible to incorruptible will be the great witness standing before the Jews. It will silence them and say, “I, creation, saw the Lord and recognize Him.
I was made new.” What will the Jews have left to say then? Creation will be a witness that leaves them speechless. So please understand: we are not indulging in literary flourishes. Saint Cyril continues: “And the stone that was rolled away at that time bears witness to the Resurrection, lying there to this very day.”
Earlier I said the stone—forgive me—I meant the rock of the tomb itself. Here, however, he means the stone that covered the tomb, that great stone about which the women had said, “Who will move it for us, who will roll away the stone, so that we may enter the tomb?” And this stone too, he says, comes forward as a witness, and it remains there to this day. To this day, you see. It is...
Three centuries had passed, and that stone was still there. “The angels of God who were present bore witness to the Resurrection of the Only-Begotten.” How did the angels bear witness? Did they not say to the Myrrh-bearing Women, “Whom do you seek? Jesus of Nazareth”? You see, they also give the name of the place—“of Nazareth”—so that you might not suppose you were seeking some other Jesus, or that they were giving you information about someone else named Jesus. No, it was Jesus of Nazareth. “He has risen, as He said; He is not here.” My dear friends, the angelic world is a witness to Christ’s Resurrection. You may ask, “But were there two angels where one is mentioned?”
Where an Evangelist mentions one angel, it is because one of them spoke, while the other stood beside him, showing that he agreed with the one speaking. And why were there two? So that there would be two witnesses, for “by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” This is testimony; it is confirmation. We have two witnesses, and therefore the word is certain and firmly established. You may ask, “Were there not four, ten, twenty, or thousands?” If I tell you there were thousands of angels, why, then, were only two visible? We shall see what happened at the Ascension a little further on. At the Ascension there were thousands of angels—myriads of angels!
They received Christ, the risen Jesus. Why were they not visible? Let me give you an example. When we go to an art exhibition, if you have noticed, the paintings are not placed in costly frames. You may ask, “Why not, with so many paintings?” Perhaps you would answer, “Where could the artist find so many frames?” But that is not the point. The artist will use simple, very plain frames. Great masterpieces are not given heavy frames, if this can be avoided. Why? Because the viewer’s eye will often fall on the frame—especially if the viewer knows little about fine art. His eye will be drawn to the frame. And when you ask him, “Do you like this painting?” he will answer, “The frame is beautiful.” That would, of course, be a great disappointment to the artist. Now consider this: if the sight had been overwhelming, with millions of angels present as Jesus ascended into heaven, where would the disciples’ eyes have fallen? On the setting, on the frame—on the angels. But they needed to look upon the Lord. The angels were indeed there, but they remained unseen. Do you understand?
For this reason, both at the Resurrection and at the Ascension, they were not to be so overwhelmed by one sight that they missed the other—the great matter, Christ’s Resurrection. But we shall return to the Ascension a little later. “Peter and John and Thomas and all the other Apostles: some ran to the tomb and, after the Resurrection, saw lying there the linen cloths in which He had previously been wrapped for burial; others touched His hands and feet and beheld the marks of the nails.” He is referring to Peter and John, who were the first to run to the tomb. Indeed, since John was an eyewitness and the author of the Gospel that bears his name, he includes details that an outside writer would never have recorded.
He says that one disciple—John, who was younger—ran faster than Peter. That is one such detail. He ran faster than Peter, but when he reached the tomb, he did not go in. Why not? Because, being younger, he was afraid. You know, when strange things happen at a tomb, fear takes hold of us. We may not even dare to enter a cemetery. So John remained outside the tomb and did not enter. Although he arrived first, he waited for Peter, who was older. And when Peter arrived... well, in such situations, you know, it helps to have someone with you.
These are things connected in some way with the other world. We cannot face them alone; we take someone with us. So John waited for Peter, so that they could enter the tomb together. What does this tell us? It is a small detail. Why is it there? Because John, who wrote it, was an eyewitness. Mark likewise records that other detail about the young man—a detail that otherwise seems to come from nowhere. He says that the young man was naked, wrapped only in a linen cloth, and was there in the garden of Gethsemane. Someone tried to seize him, but he left the linen cloth in the man’s hands and fled naked. It seems like a completely unrelated detail. So the interpreters say that this young man must have been Mark himself. It was probably in Mark’s house that...
the Mystical Supper had taken place. Certain details reveal that the writer was an eyewitness, and this is very important. “It was the fourth hour,” he says—forgive me, the tenth hour, four in the afternoon—when Andrew, whose feast we celebrated yesterday, and John, whose name is left unmentioned because John himself records the event in his Gospel, saw Jesus and asked Him, “Lord, where do You dwell?” It was four in the afternoon. Only eyewitnesses record such things. Why am I telling you this? To show you that the Gospels were written by eyewitnesses. Again and again, they saw Jesus, touched Him, and heard Him. This is also how Luke begins his prologue.
This is especially clear in the Gospel and the Acts. In the Gospel he speaks of those who were eyewitnesses of the Word—eyewitnesses. So Peter and John entered the tomb and saw. What did they see? They saw the linen cloths lying there. Let me explain again what these cloths were; I have told you before. They wrapped the dead person in strips of cloth, and as they wrapped him, they applied aloes and myrrh. These were fragrant but resinous and sticky substances. The cloth adhered like medical tape or a plaster and then dried. It was impossible to remove or peel away. Moreover, as this substance was applied, it also sealed the pores of the body. If we were to suppose that the Lord was still alive or had merely fainted—that He had not died and therefore had not risen—the wrapping alone would have caused Him to die of suffocation. There is a well-known story from the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. A man covered his son in gold—that is, he placed thin metal sheets over the child’s body—so that he could pose as a statue. The story is well known. At some point the child, that young man, fell down dead. Why?
Because the body’s imperceptible respiration, the breathing that takes place through its pores, had been prevented. Breathing through the mouth alone was not enough, and the child fell dead. So after such suffering and such tight wrapping—even if we were to suppose that some life remained and that He had not died—after three days He would certainly have died from this manner of burial alone. But when Christ rose, my dear friends, the wrappings remained in the shape of His body. Christ came out. How did He come out? In the same way that He entered the upper room while the doors were shut. The wrappings remained there untouched. Pay attention to this: untouched. No one had attempted to unwrap them...
Nothing had been disturbed. That is why he says they found everything just as it was. And, as I told you last time, they also found the face cloth—the cloth placed around the head—rolled up, he says, and lying by itself. I told you that the angels had folded it, revealing order within the tomb. Why does that order matter? Those who come to steal do not leave things in order. If, God forbid, you have ever had your home robbed, you may return and find the drawers pulled open. Thieves know that people sometimes hide money beneath the drawer lining, so they overturn everything in search of money or jewelry. It would be very naïve to imagine that thieves would then fold everything and place it neatly back in the cupboard. Why, then, was the face cloth folded? It was an answer to the claim that Jesus had been stolen. If people had come to steal His body and then claim that He had risen—as those malicious and devious rulers alleged, telling the guards to say, “They stole Him”—they would not have taken care to leave the tomb in order. And would they have stolen Him naked? Why would they not have carried Him away still wrapped in the burial cloths?
Why would they leave those cloths behind? You see how many arguments can be made against the slander that Jesus was stolen from the tomb. All these things are witnesses. As we know, on the first Sunday, the day of the Resurrection, the Twelve—or rather, the disciples with Thomas absent—were gathered when the two returned from Emmaus. As those two were describing their encounter with the Lord on the road to Emmaus, the Lord appeared. Yet even as He spoke to them, they did not believe that it was the Lord. So the Lord invited them to touch Him and told them that a phantom—for they supposed they were seeing a spirit—does not have flesh and bones...
as they could see that He had. In this way the Lord confirmed His Resurrection. It also says that “they still disbelieved for joy.” They were still unable to believe, but now it was because of their joy. They rubbed their eyes; they could scarcely comprehend it. He asked them for something to eat, and they gave Him food, including broiled fish, and He ate before them all. In this way He showed them that the risen Jesus, their Teacher, was fully human. It is truly astonishing how many proofs we have. “And all together they received the saving breath and were counted worthy to forgive sins by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
They all received that breath: “He breathed on them,” it says. Eight days later, again on a Sunday, He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” and the Lord spoke about the forgiveness or retention of sins, having given them authority through the Spirit of God: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Even that breath, Saint Cyril says, is a witness.
Women! Women held the feet of Jesus, of course, and they too are witnesses. They held His feet. “And the greatness of the earthquake”—the earthquake too is a witness. You see, Saint Cyril brings together persons and impersonal things, objects and human beings. Even the earthquake, the magnitude of that earthquake, is a witness to Christ’s Resurrection. “And they beheld the radiance of the angel who was present.” The Myrrh-bearing Women saw that brilliance, the radiance of the angel, but above all the soldiers saw it. The soldiers were terrified by the earthquake and the angel’s radiance, and they fled. And the linen cloths—these too are witnesses.
The burial cloths, “which He left behind when He rose,” remained in the tomb after His Resurrection. The soldiers and the money given to them—these too bear witness to Christ’s Resurrection. “This place, which can still be seen, and this house of the holy Church.” This very church also bears witness. Which church? The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which to this day, my dear friends, stands over Christ’s tomb. I have told you before, again while speaking about Saint Cyril, that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built over Christ’s tomb. That is why Christ’s tomb is inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
“It was built through the Christ-loving devotion of the Emperor Constantine, of blessed memory, and, as you see, it has been adorned with such splendor.” Saint Cyril says that it was built by Saint Constantine, the king and emperor, and that, as they could see, it was so beautifully adorned. What wealth was lavished upon this church in honor of Christ the Savior! Even the building itself reveals the truth; it is a witness that Jesus rose. We now come to paragraph twenty-three, where Saint Cyril continues once again with the witnesses.
“Tabitha, who was raised from the dead in His name, also bears witness to the Resurrection of Jesus. For how can anyone disbelieve that Christ rose, when even His name raised the dead?” Lord, how could anyone disbelieve in the power of the risen Christ when the dead themselves are raised? And concerning this, my dear friends, I could tell you that this testimony continues to the present day. If demons are expelled and driven out of people who are possessed simply because the name of Jesus Christ is spoken, what does this reveal?
How almighty the name of Jesus Christ is! How could it be almighty if Jesus had not risen—if He were not Jesus the God-Man? No other name is almighty. What does the Apostle Paul say? There is no other name on earth, in heaven, or in Hades. The name of Jesus Christ stands beyond and above every name. It is the name above all names, beyond and above the name of every other person or thing. It is the name above all names, before which every knee shall bow, of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. But if Jesus bears the name above every name...
if He is God, then it is not difficult for Him to raise the dead or to rise Himself. How could it be difficult? The demons flee—and why do they flee? Because Jesus is the incarnate Son of God. And what do we do even to this day? We invoke the name of Christ, even in the smallest matters. We see that the name of Jesus Christ is almighty. My dear friends, you can even stop your enemy in his tracks when you invoke the name of Jesus Christ. You can even stop a beast charging toward you—a dog rushing upon you to bite and tear you apart—if you say, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” And then you will see the dog...
tuck its tail between its legs and run away. And you will say, “What happened here?” My beloved, the almighty name of Jesus Christ is truly almighty. And it is almighty because it is the name of the incarnate Son of God. I have said this five times, and I will always emphasize it, because today the faith is under attack and must be upheld. Saint Cyril continues: “The sea also bears witness to the Resurrection of Jesus, as you heard earlier.” Which sea? The Sea of Galilee, where Christ appeared after the Resurrection—not before the Resurrection, but after it—when the Lord was walking along the shore.
The seven disciples were in their little boat, about two hundred cubits from shore. And there John said, “It is the Lord.” So the sea is a witness to the risen Jesus. And not only the sea, but also the catch of fish. Here, indeed, the same miracle is repeated that had taken place before the Crucifixion, with the same disciples. Peter and John are there; on the earlier occasion there had been Peter and Andrew, James and John. Most likely Andrew and James were also present now, though among the seven only Peter and John are named.
The text simply says that there were five other disciples. They had seen the first miracle. When? On this same lake. And when? Before the Crucifixion. So when they now see the same miracle—a great multitude of fish at a time when they had caught nothing—what does it give the disciples? It identifies the One walking along the shore: “It is the Lord.” If you wish to ask, how did John recognize Him? Not by His face. Do you want proof? When they came ashore and were eating, none of the seven disciples dared to say to Him, “Who are You?”
They knew that it was Jesus. How strange! They were saying, in effect, “It is Jesus.” How, then, while eating with Him, do they not recognize who He is and dare not ask, “Who are You?”, yet recognize Him from so far away—from two hundred cubits? How do they recognize Him? Listen to something very important here. It is the Lord walking in another form—in another form. Why in another form? On the first day of His Resurrection He appeared with the face by which they knew Him, but now He appears in another form. Why? And why do they say, in effect, “We do not recognize Him, yet we know Him. Who could He be? And yet it is He”?
He is leading His disciples more deeply and training them in something great: faith. From then on, outward form would not matter as much as faith in the person of Jesus Christ. His outward form would not matter. Do you want proof? There is not even the briefest verse in the Gospels, the Acts, or the Epistles of the Apostles that gives us the physical features of Jesus Christ—whether He was tall or short, fair-haired or dark-haired, heavy or thin, handsome or unattractive. Not a single physical feature is given. And through this other form He trains His disciples.
In other words, He brings them into the realm of faith. So do not tell me that we often seek to see Jesus Christ in a vision or in our sleep. We shall see Him there, when we go there. For if the devil sees that we are seeking to behold the face of Jesus Christ, Christ may permit the devil to appear as Christ in place of Christ. Take care! This is what is called pride—indeed, that hidden pride which lies within a person and makes its nest there, desiring to see the face of Jesus Christ. I would tell you simply—and I am saying nothing new, for many Saints have said it—I do not want to see the face of Jesus Christ. I shall see Him when I enter the Kingdom of God, if He counts me worthy.
I do not want to see Him now, because there is danger here. The Lord Himself helps His disciples enter the realm of faith. That is why no one dared ask Him, “Who are You?” Please read the final chapter of the Gospel according to John: “Who are You?”—for they knew that it was Jesus. How did they know? Through faith. What made John cry out, “It is the Lord,” from two hundred cubits away? The Hebrew cubit is fifty-two centimeters, so that was about one hundred meters away. Did he simply have excellent eyesight? Pay attention. It was the miracle of the catch; it was the fishing. What did this reveal? The One who, three years earlier...
had worked this very same miracle could only be the same person; therefore, “It is the Lord.” Do you see what His identifying marks are? They are not whether He had a large or small nose, or blue or dark eyes. The identifying marks of Jesus are His works, just as the prophets describe them to us. What would Jesus Christ do? This is how Jesus Christ is recognized. It is astonishing. So, without dwelling on the matter too long, the sea is a witness, the catch of fish is a witness, and so are the charcoal fire that lay there and the fish placed upon it.
The fish was there upon the charcoal fire. All these things are witnesses to the risen Christ. “Peter also bears witness: he who had formerly denied Him, but then confessed Him three times and was commanded to shepherd the spiritual sheep.” Peter, too, provides further testimony: he had denied Christ, and now the Lord tells him, “Feed My sheep.” “The Mount of Olives remains to this day, showing to the eyes of the faithful Him who ascended upon the cloud and, as it were, pointing out even now the heavenly gate of His ascent.” The Mount of Olives itself is also a witness. You know that olive trees...
live for a very long time—an exceedingly long time. We have what is known as Plato’s olive tree. It stands on the Sacred Way in Athens. Plato lived in the fifth century before Christ, and the tree may indeed date from that period. The olive tree lives for many years. All the more, then, could there be an olive grove on the Mount of Olives, which is why it was called the Mount of Olives. It was a low hill east of Jerusalem, with Bethany lying beyond it. Olive trees grew there on that hill. And there took place the...
Ascension of Christ. Saint Cyril says most beautifully that this Mount of Olives, which still existed in his day, was a witness to Him whom the cloud received and carried up into heaven, “pointing out even now the heavenly gate of His ascent.” I emphasize the word “gate.” What is the gate of heaven? Or are we unable to speak of a gate of heaven? Did God open one door and descend to earth, and later open another door and ascend into heaven? You may ask, “Is this merely a figure of speech?” No, not at all.
Could it perhaps be a vision? In the fourth chapter of the Apocalypse, the Evangelist John says, “Behold, I saw a door opened in heaven.” Pay attention to what Saint Cyril says: “For we know Bethlehem, from which He descended from heaven, and the Mount of Olives, from which He ascended into heaven.” Through that gate of heaven He descended to Bethlehem, and through the gate above the Mount of Olives He ascended into heaven. This descent and ascent, my beloved, are truly a Mystery. How did He descend? Like...
dew upon the fleece. Go outside on a damp night and look upon the fields in the early morning, before dawn or just as day breaks; look at the dew upon the plants and upon other things. Did it rain? There are no clouds. How, then, did this dew fall? Dew upon the fleece. The fleece is sheep’s wool. It catches the moisture; it does not absorb it, but holds it. You know that this comes from Gideon’s vision—and let us not digress too far—and it is a prophecy here. Without a sound, the...
Word descended—without a sound, without noise—like dew upon the fleece. No one perceives how the dew falls. In this way He descended from heaven to earth, so simply. What does the angel say to the Theotokos? “The Son of God will come to you and be born from you.” “How will this happen to me?” “The Holy Spirit will overshadow you.” How did it happen? Within the Theotokos, the Mystery of the Incarnation was accomplished. Yet the angel, at the moment when the Theotokos said, “Behold, behold the handmaid of the Lord”...
beheld the Word being conceived. This is the first thing we say in the Akathist Hymn: that the angel was amazed when he saw You taking flesh within the womb of the Theotokos. The angel saw this. But what did he see? He did not see God the Word Himself; he saw the human nature of God the Word within the womb of the Virgin. And the angel believed. Listen to what I said: he believed. For both angels and demons will be judged according to faith in the person of Jesus Christ—both angels and demons. The person of Jesus Christ will be the standard of judgment. The angel believed, and when Christ was later born...
the angels glorified God. Thus He descended unnoticed through that gate of heaven above Bethlehem. Here, of course, I am speaking entirely in human terms, using a figure. But when He departed, He departed before many witnesses. He was taken up from the hill, from the Mount of Olives, and ascended into heaven. Were the disciples not watching? Many witnesses were there and saw the Ascension of Christ. There is, then, a gate of descent and a gate of ascent. How wondrous, my beloved! Heaven was opened. Who opened it?
Who prepared the way to heaven? To prepare the way means to open the road. He opened the way so that man might walk that same road. Which road? Whatever happened in the person of Christ is to happen in the person of every mortal human being. Christ died, and man also dies. Christ rose, and man too will rise. Christ ascends into heaven, and man too will ascend into heaven. He has no need of technology or rockets. This ascent does not require technological civilization for man to rise into heaven. And when the time comes, my beloved, for us to ascend into heaven, I assure you that...
everything upon the earth, all that appears as human civilization, will have been burned up. The Apostle Peter tells us this. Every work of man will have been burned up. Civilization will no longer exist; it will not be needed. It will not be needed. Thus He descended and ascended. “There He descended among men and began His struggles; here, after His struggles, He is crowned.” There He came down among men and began His struggle on their behalf. Here, Saint Cyril says, He ascends and is crowned for His struggles. You have many witnesses—indeed, you have many witnesses.
“You have this place of the Resurrection. You also have, to our east, the place of the Ascension.” You have here the place where Christ rose. Here, in the church where we now stand, in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where you are hearing this catechesis, Saint Cyril tells his catechumens. And to the east you have the place from which Christ ascended into heaven. “You also have as witnesses the angels who testified there.” Who are they? They are the two angels who, while the disciples and all the others—including the Theotokos—were looking toward heaven, drew their attention and said to them, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing into heaven?”
“Why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who is ascending, will return in the same manner as you saw Him go.” Here they are speaking of the Second Coming of Christ. They are witnesses. Why are there two of them? For the reason I gave you at the beginning: to provide testimony. And now they bear witness, not to the Resurrection or to the Ascension—for the disciples had seen the risen Christ and were watching Him ascend into heaven—but to what is yet to come. Listen: to what is yet to come. And what is that? The Second Coming of Christ. And if the Resurrection and the Ascension proved true, then the Second Coming will also prove true...
the Second Coming of Christ. Where are those who say that the Second Coming of Christ will not take place? It is inconceivable. Without it, the work of Christ remains incomplete. Christ will come again. The question is not whether He will come. The question is how He will find us when He comes, and what state we will be in. And you have the cloud as a witness, Saint Cyril says—the cloud that received the Lord, upon which, we might say, He stood—and also the disciples who came down from there. You also have as witnesses the disciples who descended the hill and returned rejoicing to Jerusalem at the Ascension of their Teacher, as the Gospel according to Luke concludes.
These are the witnesses: human beings who were eyewitnesses, and creation itself. All of them will stand as fearsome witnesses against those who persist in denying the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, let us embrace all these things and ponder them within ourselves. This is called theoria, divine contemplation. The spiritual person must also be contemplative; that is, he must reflect upon all of this theology, so that he may firmly establish within himself faith in the risen Jesus Christ.

να κατοχυρώσει την Ανάσταση του Χριστού. Ευρισκόμεθα, λοιπόν, στην 22η παράγραφο, στην οποία χρησιμοποιεί μάρτυρες. Αν, λέει, εσύ αρνηθείς, τότε θα ξεσηκωθούν πολλοί μάρτυρες, τόσον άνθρωποι όσο και άγγελοι, αλλά και τα άψυχα ακόμα. Γι’ αυτό επικαλείται τον τάφο, τον κήπο, τη νύχτα, την πανσέληνο, την πέτρα του τάφου, τα αργύρια που πήρανε οι στρατιώτες να πουν το ψέμα, τη συκοφαντία και λοιπά. Τα επικαλείται όλα ως μάρτυρες. Θα μου πείτε: Μήπως είναι ένας ποιητικός τρόπος; Όχι, δεν είναι, αγαπητοί, αλλά είναι ένας θαυμάσιος τρόπος και αποτελούν μάρτυρες, διότι ο Άγιος Κύριλλος έχει ένα προηγούμενο, έχει τον Ησαΐα. Όταν ο Ησαΐας —καλύτερα, ο Θεός— ομιλεί στον λαό του διά στόματος και γραφίδος Ησαΐου, για να ακουστεί, ποιον θα πάρει ως μάρτυρες των όσων θα πει ο Θεός; Ποιος θα πάρει; Ποιον θα πάρει; Διότι μπροστά του έχει ένα λαό ο οποίος είναι ατίθασος, απείθαρχος. Πώς, λοιπόν, θα πάρει μάρτυρες;
Το Ευαγγέλιο και τις Πράξεις κυρίως. Στο Ευαγγέλιο λέει: εκείνοι που στάθηκαν αυτόπτες του λόγου, αυτόπτες. Λοιπόν, ο Πέτρος και ο Ιωάννης έτσι μπήκαν μέσα στον τάφο και είδαν. Τι είδαν; Τα οθόνια κείμενα. Θα ξαναπώ τι σημαίνει τα οθόνια, σας το έχω πει άλλη φορά. Ετύλιγαν τον νεκρόν με μια λωρίδα υφάσματος και, όπως τύλιγαν, έβαζαν και το μύρο, την αλόη και τη σμύρνα, που ήταν αρωματώδεις ουσίες, αλλά ρητινώδεις, κολλώδεις, και κολλούσε όπως είναι το τσιρότο, όπως είναι το έμπλαστρο, και με τον τρόπον αυτόν θα ξεραινόταν. Ήταν αδύνατο να το βγάλεις αυτό το πράγμα, αδύνατο να το ξεκολλήσεις. Βεβαίως, και όπως μπαίνει αυτή η ουσία, ομοίως έκλεινε και τους πόρους του σώματος. Αν υποτεθεί ότι ο Κύριος ήτο ζωντανός ή λιποθυμισμένος, δηλαδή δεν πέθανε και συνεπώς δεν ανεστήθη, και μόνο γιατί κανείς θα έβαζε αυτό το φάσκιωμα, θα πέθαινε από την ασφυξία. Είναι γνωστή μια ιστορία, που κάποτε κάποιος σε Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες στην αρχαία Ελλάδα χρύσωσε, δηλαδή έβαλε κάποια ελάσματα έτσι μεταλλικά στο παιδί του και παρίστανε ένα άγαλμα. Παρίστανε απλώς έτσι. Είναι γνωστή η ιστορία αυτή. Κάποια στιγμή έπεσε νεκρό το παιδί, ο νέος αυτός έπεσε νεκρός. Γιατί;
η φασκιά, τίποτε. Γι' αυτό λέγει ότι βρήκαν αυτά όλα έτσι και, όπως σας έλεγα την περασμένη φορά, και το φακιόλιο, δηλαδή εκείνο που έμπαινε στο κεφάλι, το βρήκαν εντετυλιγμένο, λέγει, τυλιγμένο εις έναν τόπο. Και σας είχα πει ότι οι άγγελοι το εδίπλωσαν αυτό, αυτό που δείχνει μια τάξη μέσα στο μνημείο. Γιατί τάξη; Εκείνοι που θα πήγαιναν να κλέψουν δεν τηρούν την τάξη. Αν είχατε ποτέ την τύχη, ο μη γένοιτο, να σας κλέψουν το σπίτι και πάτε στο σπίτι σας και δείτε συρτάρια που ανοίγουν, γιατί ξέρουν οι κλέφτες ότι κάπου βάζουμε στα συρτάρια, κάτω από το χαρτί του συρταριού, και τα χρήματά μας, να τα αναποδογυρίζουν όλα για να βρουν χρήματα ή κοσμήματα. Βεβαίως, αφελέστατο ήταν να νομίζαμε ότι οι κλέφτες θα τα ξαναβάζανε πάλι διπλωμένα μέσα στο ντουλάπι. Γιατί, λοιπόν, ήταν διπλωμένο το φακιόλι; Για να είναι μια απάντηση ότι δεν εκλάπη ο Ιησούς. Γιατί, αν πήγαν να τον κλέψουν, το σώμα του, και να πούνε ότι ανεστήθη — αυτό που είπαν οι περίεργοι, οι μοχθηροί εκείνοι οι άρχοντες, ότι θα πείτε «τον έκλεψαν» — μα, αν πήγαν να τον κλέψουν, δεν θα εφρόντιζαν να υπάρχει μια τάξη μέσα στο μνημείο. Ύστερα, θα τον έκλεπταν γυμνόν; Γιατί να μην τον πάρουν με τα φασκιά εκεί;
Μαρτυρεί την Ανάσταση του Ιησού και η εν ονόματι αυτού εκ νεκρών εγερθείσα Ταβιθά. Πώς γαρ απιστηθήσεται Χριστός Αναστάς, όπου γε και το όνομα αυτού νεκρούς ήγειρε; Κύριε, πώς είναι δυνατό ποτέ να απιστηθεί η δύναμη του Αναστάντος Χριστού, όταν και νεκροί αναστήνονται; Επάνω σε αυτό θα μπορούσα να σας πω, αγαπητοί μου, ότι αυτή η μαρτυρία είναι μέχρι σήμερα. Εάν δαίμονες απελαύνονται, διώχνονται από δαιμονισμένους ανθρώπους, μόνο και μόνο γιατί λέγεται το όνομα του Ιησού Χριστού, τι φανερώνει αυτό;
Άλλοι πέντε, λέει, οι μαθητές. Είχαν δει το πρώτο θαύμα. Πότε; Στην ίδια λίμνη. Πότε; Προ της Σταυρώσεως. Και όταν, λοιπόν, βλέπουν το ίδιο θαύμα, να έχουν πλήθος από ψάρια σε μια ώρα που δεν είχαν πιάσει τίποτα, τι έχουν εδώ οι μαθητές; Την ταυτότητα εκείνου που περπατούσε εις τον αιγιαλόν: «Ο Κύριός εστι». Αν το θέλετε, από πού τον εγνώρισε ο Ιωάννης; Όχι από το πρόσωπο. Θέλετε απόδειξη; Θέλετε απόδειξη; Όταν βγήκαν και τρώνε, κανείς δεν ετόλμησε από τους επτά μαθητάς να του πει: «Σὺ τίς εἶ;» Συ, ποιος είσαι;
οι άγγελοι εδόξασαν τον Θεόν. Έτσι κατέβηκε χωρίς να γίνει αντιληπτός από την πύλη εκείνη του ουρανού που βλέπει πάνω από τη Βηθλεέμ. Τώρα εδώ μιλάω εντελώς ανθρώπινα, μιλάω με ένα σχήμα. Όταν όμως έφυγε, έφυγε ενώπιον πολλών μαρτύρων. Ανελήφθη από τον λόφο, από το Όρος των Ελαιών, ανήλθε στους ουρανούς. Δεν βλέπαν οι μαθητές; Μάρτυρες πολλοί ήσαν εκεί που είδαν την Ανάληψη του Χριστού. Πύλη λοιπόν καθόδου και πύλη ανόδου. Τι θαυμαστό, αγαπητοί μου! Άνοιξε ο ουρανός. Ποιος τον άνοιξε;
