Summary

Saint Cyril interprets the guards’ bribed denial of the Resurrection through Jonah’s warning that those who cling to falsehood abandon divine mercy. The Manichaean claim that Christ rose only in appearance is rejected because Scripture affirms His real descent from David, true humanity, death, and bodily Resurrection. First Corinthians 15 grounds faith in both prophecy and historical witnesses, teaching that if Christ has not risen, Christian preaching and faith are empty.

Beloved, we are in the fourteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem, at paragraph 20. We examined the first half of this paragraph last time, and now we continue: “And foreseeing what would happen with the Jews who bribed the soldiers to lie and say, ‘Say that His disciples stole Him while we were asleep,’ they clung to vain and false things and abandoned the One who showed them mercy. For He who had mercy on them came, was crucified, and rose again, giving His precious blood for both Jews and Gentiles.”

“Those who say, ‘Say that they stole Him,’ cling to vain and false things.” And concerning His Resurrection, Isaiah also says: “He who brought up from the earth the great Shepherd of the sheep.” He added the word “great” so that He would not be thought equal to the shepherds who came before Him. Here Saint Cyril is referring to the soldiers who were paid to lie and say that Jesus had not risen, but that “while we were asleep, He was stolen by His disciples.” He now takes up a passage of Scripture.

He says that it is from Jonah, chapter two, verse nine: “Those who cling to vain and false things abandon the One who shows them mercy.” That is the verse. They abandoned mercy, he says, and instead chose to cling to vain and false things. Saint Cyril gives a most beautiful interpretation. When Jonah says, “They abandoned mercy,” he explains that they abandoned the One who is merciful, the very source of mercy. And who is the One who shows mercy? He is the One who was crucified and rose again. It was He whom they abandoned.

They chose to cling to vain and false things. In other words, he wishes to emphasize that they denied and abandoned the One who gives mercy, the One who truly came to have mercy on us. They rejected Him and remained with things that lie outside the mercy of God. He then refers to Isaiah, chapter 63, verse 11: “He who brought up from the earth the great Shepherd of the sheep.” That is, the One who raised from the earth the great Shepherd of the sheep.

This means God the Father, who raises the Son. And Saint Cyril says: Do you see what the prophet said? “The great Shepherd.” There had been other shepherds of the sheep, so, lest He be confused with one of the ordinary shepherds of Israel, the prophet calls Him great. He is clearly referring to Jesus, for He is the Great Shepherd. Do you see the words, “He who brought up”? They mean the One who brought Him up from the earth—from the tomb—the One who raised Him from the tomb. The subject here is the Resurrection of Christ, and these are arguments drawn from Holy Scripture, as we have already said. Let us continue now with paragraph 21.

“Since, therefore, we possess the prophecies, let faith remain firm among us.” Since we have the prophecies, he says, let faith remain within us. We possess the prophecies and give heed to them, and in this way we shall believe. “Let those who fall through unbelief fall, since that is what they choose.” Let those who wish to fall remain in their unbelief and fall. He is referring to the Jews. We shall be established upon the prophetic word; we shall believe, and it will be life for us. But if some choose not to believe and choose to fall, then let them fall.

This expression—and especially its tone—could also be used when we enter into discussions with people who oppose the faith. We present the arguments and establish the truth of the Resurrection of Christ, yet they remain in their unbelief. And do you know what we do then? We argue and quarrel with them. Allow me to say that it is not right to quarrel. We may even reach the point of insulting one another and making enemies of them. And the remarkable thing is that, throughout all this, we imagine that we are acting in defense of the faith.

We think we are fighting for Christ, for the Lord. Have we done well? No, we have not. “A servant of the Lord must not quarrel,” says the word of God, as the Apostle Paul tells Timothy. A servant of God, a servant of the Lord, must not fight or quarrel. We will tell those who oppose us what is right. If they are people of good will, they will accept it. If they are not, we will say: “I pray that you may understand this. I have nothing more to say to you; I only pray that you may understand it and that God may illumine you.” And nothing more. We will not quarrel. There is something else as well: when we quarrel with someone, we burn the bridges that might have allowed us to speak with him again.

He may have a change of heart later. So it is not right to deal with him in a way that isolates him from us. Do not forget that most Christians today are unbelieving and do not hold the true faith. Of course, when we tell those who deny the Resurrection of Christ that they are unbelievers, they immediately reply, “I believe too; you cannot call me an unbeliever.” But there is an inconsistency in such a person’s claim to be a believer. How can it be otherwise? Or how can you believe in Christ’s divine and human nature while refusing to believe His words, including His teaching on moral matters? If you say that purity is necessary, he will answer, “That is outdated.” But Christ said it. “I do not take that into account,” he replies.

And you say that you believe in Christ? If you say you believe, then the Word of God must dwell within you. You must accept the teaching of Christ. Otherwise, how can you be called a believer? What meaning does the word “believer” have then? It no longer has any meaning. For this reason, we must correct people and respond to the situation before us. Many Christians today are like neo-pagans and unbelievers. They were baptized—yes, baptized—but we must deal with them much as we would deal with pagans, with people who may know nothing at all about the faith. In any case, our method must never employ violence, shouting, harshness, quarrels, or anything of the kind. Does someone oppose us?

We will tell him that we shall pray for him. Nothing more. We must be courteous in this matter. Now someone may say to me, especially when it comes to heretics, “But should you not become angry?”

“Father, have you forgotten? John Chrysostom is said to have declared—not written, but said—that the hand which slaps someone who speaks heresy is sanctified.” To this I would answer as follows. Tradition also says that Saint Nicholas...

...struck Arius. Indeed, in our monastery we have a chapel with scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas. One scene has been very well preserved. It depicts the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in Asia Minor. Saint Nicholas stands at one end of the assembly of the 318 God-bearing Fathers, while Saint Constantine the Great presides in the center. There Saint Nicholas strikes Arius. Yes, I do not condemn what Saint Nicholas did or what John Chrysostom said, because methods vary from one age to another. We are speaking here about a method, not a dogma of the faith. In an age when the majority of people are Christians...

...someone who persists in blasphemy and heresy may at times have to be forcibly removed from their midst. I am not the one saying this; the Word of God says it. It appears in the Old Testament, and the Apostle Paul renews it. It is therefore also a matter of the New Testament: “Put away the evil person from among yourselves.” You shall remove the evil person from your midst. Consider also the matter of excommunication. What does excommunication mean? The Greek word means to place someone outside the boundaries. Which boundaries? The boundaries of the Church. That is what it means to excommunicate: I cut you off; you are no longer a Christian. But do you know when this applies? When the majority of people are Christians.

But we have reached an age in which the majority are not Christians in any real sense. Christians are only a small portion; they are the remnant. Tell me, then, how can we use that method now? Shall we become angry, slap people, and kick them? Nothing will come of it. What must we do? We must do what the first Christians did. When was that? When the first Christians were few and the majority were pagans. And what did those first Christians do? They spoke courteously.

They could not say, “We shall begin shouting and quarreling simply because pagans surround us.” No. The early Christians lived among the pagans with blameless conduct. Sadly, because few Christians remain today, we must once again live in the same way. “You now stand firmly upon the rock of faith concerning the Resurrection. Take care that no heretic ever persuades you to speak falsely against the Resurrection.” In other words, he says: Take care lest some heretic persuade you and lead you to disparage the Resurrection of Christ.

“For even today the Manichaeans say that the Savior’s Resurrection took place only in appearance and was not real. They refuse to heed Paul, who writes, ‘He was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,’ and who then says, ‘Jesus Christ our Lord, declared through the resurrection from the dead.’ And again, addressing them, he says, ‘Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” or “Who will descend into the abyss?”—that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.’” So take heed, he says. Remain firmly grounded in the Resurrection of Christ. He is referring here to the Manichaeans. Do you know who the Manichaeans were? They were Gnostics. The founder of Manichaeism was Mani. In Greek, his name is spelled with an eta in its final syllable, but it does not follow the first declension.

You know about the declensions of the Greek language, although today declensions have practically disappeared. There are three declensions: first, second, and third. His name does not belong to the first declension. We abolished the three declensions only to create countless declensions, because now every noun seems to be declined in its own way. Take the Greek word for barber, for example: one form in the singular and another irregular form in the plural. Why did we alter it? Because we treated it as belonging to the first declension.

Now observe what happens here. If we use another form of the name, we move into the third declension. But declensions have practically disappeared today. The name is Mani, with its genitive form Manitos; its final syllable is spelled with an eta, but the noun belongs to the third declension. It is not a first-declension noun. Pay attention now. It is well known that the Manichaeans mixed Christianity...

...with a great deal of paganism.

Mani, moreover, was a Persian. He aspired to include all the religions of his time and make them into one religion rather than many. For this reason, we might say that Mani is the patron of today’s ecumenism. Our Church was deeply alarmed by Manichaeism. Later on—not in the fourteenth catechetical lecture, but much further on—we shall see Saint Cyril say this: if a Manichaean asks you, “Give me some bread,” do not give it to him. Do you know why? Because he will take the bread to eat it, but before eating it he will go aside and say these words: “Bread,

I did not reap you as wheat; someone else reaped you. So may the one who reaped you also be reaped. Bread, I did not bake you; so may the one who gave me this bread also be baked.” And Saint Cyril says: You give him bread to eat, and he blasphemes you and curses you. The Manichaeans believed that all things had a soul within them and that, in order to eat something, it either had to be given to you by someone else—already dead, of course—or it had to die by falling from a tree. For example, you were never supposed to pick a fig. The figs had to fall from the fig tree—that is, they had to die—before they could eat them, because they believed that figs had souls. Suffice it to say that Manichaeism

spread throughout the Mediterranean coastlands: North Africa, France, and Constantinople. Manichaeism endured for many centuries. I need only remind you that Saint Augustine also passed through Manichaeism; he had been led astray by it. Manichaeism spread with tremendous success. You may ask, “Could people really believe such ridiculous things?” Yet how do we accept the many ridiculous things that others say in our own time? We do accept them. It is strange—truly strange. Nevertheless, Saint Cyril says, take care: the Manichaeans will tell you that these things are imaginary and not real. By “imaginary,” he means that Christ rose only in appearance and that His body did not

truly rise. Why did the Manichaeans say this, as did all the Gnostics? Quite simply, because the Manichaeans and all the Gnostics were dualists. They believed in two principles: spirit and matter. Spirit is good and comes from a good god; matter is evil and comes from an evil god. How, then, could Jesus Christ, who was a real man and had taken on human flesh—though they did not believe that He was God—take His body back again? I am not speaking now about the Docetists, who did not believe that He even had a human body. I am speaking of those who believed that through death He cast off His body.

For Him to take up again what they regarded as the source of evil would have been inconceivable—inconceivable! Therefore, they denied the Resurrection of Christ, meaning the actual raising of His human body, and said that this Resurrection occurred only in the imagination, merely in appearance—by seeming, as we might put it. You know that modern spiritualism accepts Christ and the Resurrection of Christ in much the same way. I mean the spiritualism we spoke about earlier during the question period. Spiritualism is essentially a religion. It has teachings, moral instruction, and doctrines—but doctrines that are, of course, entirely pseudo-Christian. And in reality, spiritualism is dualistic.

It speaks about the Resurrection of Christ, but says that it was imaginary, merely apparent, because Christ abandons the body. That is supposedly why it is called “spiritualism”: it claims to despise matter and remain within the realm of spirit, or of spirits. What wretched confusion! This shows you how many such ideas appear in every age, including our own. From time to time they are written about in magazines, newspapers, and articles; various people promote them, and we read them and are led astray. This is why I explain these strange positions to you in simpler terms—positions that Saint Cyril himself also mentions—so that we may stand on firm ground and not be carried away by all these

strange people who, under the devil’s influence, imagine that they are acting according to God. Here Saint Cyril presents arguments from the Apostle. For example, he writes, “They fail to heed Paul, who writes.” What does Paul write? “Who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh.” Indeed, he makes this very point. Here the Apostle Paul is writing to the Romans, as I told you, but he also says to Timothy: “And remember my Gospel concerning Jesus Christ, of the seed of David.” When he emphasizes “of the seed of David,” what does he mean? He means that Christ bore a real human nature, and it is this human nature that would rise—not His divinity.

God neither dies nor rises from the dead. It was the human nature that died and rose. And again, what does Paul say in Romans 1:4? “Jesus Christ our Lord, by the Resurrection from the dead.”

“From the dead.” And further, “Do not say...” Notice here a beautiful passage. This passage, please note, is taken from Deuteronomy 30:12, and the Apostle Paul cites it in Romans 10:7. At first glance it is a difficult passage, but in fact it is not difficult.

Yet if someone does not understand it, it seems difficult. “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’—that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.” I am reading it here as it is written in Saint Cyril. The wording in Deuteronomy is somewhat fuller, and it is also somewhat fuller in the Apostle Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Let me explain it to you. Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into heaven?” In other words, who will go up there to bring down Christ, the Messiah, the Savior, the Redeemer? Who could possibly ascend into Heaven and bring Him down from there? “Or who will descend into the abyss?” That is, who will descend into the abyss, into Hades, to bring Christ up from there—in other words, to raise Him from the dead? Thank you.

“That is, to bring Christ up from the dead.” The words “that is” mean “in other words”: that the moment should come for Christ to rise from the dead. Do not say this in your heart, he tells us. Do you know what this means, beloved? It means the following. This passage is in Deuteronomy and refers to Christ. It is prophetic, and that is why the Apostle Paul uses it in Romans. It means: do not pry into the mystery and say within yourself, “Is it possible for God to become man?

Or, if He dies as man and descends into Hades, is it possible for Him to rise again?” Do not say this in your heart. In other words, take care: you must accept this and believe it.

It is so great that you cannot imagine it, yet it can become a reality; and indeed, we have both the event of the Incarnation and the event of the Resurrection. For if Christ were not the Son of God, then certainly we would not have His Resurrection. Better still, if the Son of God were not of the essence of the Father—that is, truly God—He could not ascend into Heaven. A little further on, in paragraph twenty-four, though I do not know whether we shall reach it this evening, Saint Cyril speaks about the Ascension of Christ. The Ascension of Christ, like the Resurrection of Christ, is confirmed by Pentecost, as I have told you many times. God would never have sent His Holy Spirit

if the Son had not risen and ascended into Heaven—and, most importantly, if the Son Himself were not truly God. Others also went up into heaven. Elijah went up into heaven, and Enoch went up into heaven—or, if you prefer, as though into heaven. But the Spirit is not theirs; He is the Spirit of God. For here we have reconciliation. What human being can reconcile humanity with God on humanity’s behalf? No one—no one. “Every man is a liar.” Not one person is righteous before God. How, then, could a mere man bring about reconciliation with God? Therefore, He could not be merely man. The Son

became man: He was truly human in His human nature, yet behind that human nature is His divinity. Let us continue. “And similarly, to make the matter secure, he wrote elsewhere: ‘Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead,’” as the Apostle says in 2 Timothy 2:8. Remember Jesus Christ, who has risen from the dead. And again: “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is empty, and your faith is also empty. And we are found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified concerning God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise.” This is found in the First Epistle to the Corinthians.

The whole of chapter 15—every part of it—concerns the Resurrection of Christ and the resurrection of the dead. Beloved, we should know this by heart. That is, you should be able to say, “First Corinthians, chapter 15.” What is found there? The resurrection of the dead. When I say that we should know it by heart, I do not mean that we must memorize the entire chapter, but that we should know its contents, so that whenever someone is ignorant or doubtful, we can turn to it and speak to him from there. I would like to dwell briefly on this passage and say a little more. First of all, the Apostle Paul establishes the resurrection of the dead on the basis of the Resurrection of Christ. Then he establishes the Resurrection of Christ by two things, two kinds of evidence:

first, prophetic evidence, and second, historical evidence. I have stated them in ascending order, while he writes them in descending order. He gives historical and prophetic confirmation. Second, he presents the Resurrection of Christ as the fact that establishes the matter; and third, he draws conclusions. If Christ rose, then the dead will also rise. If you say that the dead will not rise, then Christ did not rise either. And if Christ did not rise, then our faith is in vain and our preaching is also in vain. Let me take the first part in just a few words. What, then, does the Apostle Paul say in First Corinthians, chapter 15?

“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the Gospel which I preached to you, which you also received and in which you stand, through which you are also saved.” These are remarkable words: you heard the Gospel, received it, stood firm in it, and through it have been saved. This word “received” means Tradition—Tradition. “By what word I preached it to you, if you hold fast, unless you believed in vain.” Here he corrects them: Wait—could it be that you believed in vain, since your faith is faltering? Indeed, the Corinthians held various ideas about the resurrection of the dead, and so the Apostle Paul corrects them.

He wrote these things to them, and Glory to God, the Spirit of God preserved these words in writing, so that throughout the centuries the faithful might read them and stand on firm ground. “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” I hand on to you what I myself received—this is Tradition, as I told you. What does Tradition say? That Christ died for our sins “according to the Scriptures,” meaning according to the prophets. The prophets had foretold this. Therefore, we have the prophetic word. “And that He was buried, and that He rose on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

That small phrase we say in the Creed, “according to the Scriptures,” is no minor detail. It is the cement that binds together the individual articles of the Creed. The words “according to the Scriptures” are taken from here, from the Apostle Paul. In other words, the events that took place had already been foretold in prophecy. Therefore, we have both the event—or the events—and the prophecies. Now he will confirm the events themselves, especially the words, “that He was buried.”

Jesus died—He truly died. And now, who are the witnesses to these events? Which events? Not only the events of Jesus’ life, because everyone witnessed those. The whole people of Israel witnessed Jesus’ earthly presence. But now Paul speaks of witnesses to the Resurrection, to these particular events, and he lists them: “He was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve.” First, he says, He appeared to Peter. Notice that he does not include the women. Why, you may ask? Why does he not include the women? If he had been writing to Hebrews, he would have included the women as well. Thank you.

But he was writing to the Corinthians, and he does not include the women because, among the ancient Greeks, women did not hold an important place in public life; consequently, their testimony could not be taken into account. That is why he does not include the women—the myrrh-bearing women, who played such an important role. They were the first to see Christ. So we might say that other names could be added to the list preserved for us by the Apostle Paul if the women were included. But this is why he does not record them. Then he says, “then by the Twelve”: first Peter, then the Twelve. You may ask, “The Twelve? What about Judas?” The number twelve is a technical term. That is why they were called “the Twelve,” even though Judas was no longer among them. Later, Matthias took his place, and so forth.

“Then He was seen by more than five hundred brethren at once.” Five hundred witnesses! Do you still require more, Corinthians? “Most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep.” Most of them, he says, are still alive; some have died—have fallen asleep, that is, have died. In other words, go and ask them. They are witnesses to the Resurrection of Christ. Why? Because they saw Him. Because they saw Him. This may have happened at the Ascension—though perhaps not—or it may have taken place “on the mountain where Jesus had appointed them,” that is, in Galilee. And there, where Matthew says, “They worshiped Him”...

“They worshiped Him,” but then there is a curious little phrase, one that may even trouble you: “But some doubted.” Who were those who doubted? Was this truly Jesus? It is what we mean when we say that we cannot believe our own eyes. Even as they saw Him, they still showed some hesitation. But when Pentecost came, all such doubts vanished, because Jesus had risen and sent the Holy Spirit. I tell you, Pentecost is the heavy artillery of our certainty. It confirms the Resurrection and the Ascension. Pentecost itself does this. Someone might—or might not—have claimed that the Resurrection was not firmly established. Do you understand the way I am putting this? Let us suppose that someone could say that the Resurrection had not been established with certainty.

They might try to say so, even though there is abundant evidence for it. But since it is confirmed by Pentecost, consider this: if Jesus had not risen and had been a liar, why would God have sent the Holy Spirit, with those wondrous and astonishing signs, upon those who believed in Jesus? If Jesus had falsely claimed divine attributes for Himself, He would have had to be the most sinful man in history, because He dared to appropriate divine characteristics and divine attributes. “I and the Father are one.” Who among men has ever said such a thing? Neither Buddha nor Muhammad—no one ever said it. Jesus said it. But if He had been a deceiver and a liar, He would have deserved to be at the very bottom of Hell. Yet He is not.

He is not. Why? Because He is true. That is why I told you that Pentecost is the heavy artillery confirming the Resurrection and the Ascension. “Then He was seen by James, then by all the apostles.” He then appeared to James. Here, it seems, we have a separate appearance of the Lord to James, who came to believe. Until then, you know, he had not believed. Neither had His brothers, those children of Joseph who watched over the Theotokos. They had not believed. John the Evangelist says this plainly. They seem to have regarded Him simply as a great man. When they were going up to Jerusalem for the feast, they said to Him, “You should go up as well. You have power; you are important. Show them your power.”

In other words, let the people accept You as, we might say, a miracle-worker. “No,” the Lord says, “I am not going up to the feast. My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.” After they had left, Jesus later went up to the feast, that is, to Jerusalem. They had not believed; John the Evangelist specifically notes that not even His brothers had believed—His brothers according to the flesh, as we call them. James the Brother of the Lord and Jude the Brother of the Lord, whose epistle comes near the end of Holy Scripture, had not believed. But when the Lord appeared to James, as we have just read, he became the wondrous James, the first bishop of Jerusalem.

Together with Peter and John—James the son of Zebedee having meanwhile been killed—he was regarded as a pillar of the Church in Jerusalem. He was its first bishop. He was so righteous—that is, so virtuous, for this is what “righteous” means—that even the Jews respected him, though they had not believed in Christ. So great was James. He prayed so much on his knees that Eusebius preserves for us in his History that his knees had become as hard as a camel’s hide from so much prayer. He prayed for the people to be saved, because James knew that they would be punished by God for their great crime, and he implored God that they might believe. In the end, they cast him down and killed him. They placed him on the Temple parapet, and there he confessed the divinity of Christ. Then the Jews and their rulers said, “The righteous man has been deceived.” But James might never have believed otherwise. You know how it is: when you grow up in the same house with a brother, it is not easy to acknowledge him in this way. That is why the Lord said, “No prophet is honored”—that is, accepted—“in his own country.” James could never have readily accepted his brother Jesus, who was younger than he was. For James and the others were Joseph’s children by his first wife, who had died.

But Christ appeared to James, and that means James believed. My dear friends, listen to me. Unless a person has tasted the risen Jesus Christ and tasted the Holy Spirit, he will not bear witness to Christ and give his life for Him. Millions of martyrs had tasted Jesus Christ. As we know from the Synaxaria and other accounts, the martyrs already lived within the life of faith. They were imprisoned and punished, yet they remained within the life of faith. Shortly before they endured their final martyrdom, Christ appeared to them—and He still appears and will continue to appear—to encourage and strengthen them. Thus, they truly taste His presence. You cannot suffer martyrdom for Christ...

Unless you have the special gift of this faith and, if you will, afterward also of vision—that is, of theoria, divine vision. Otherwise, how could you give your life? What is more precious than life? I may give my money or my health, but here I give my very life. For a lie? For a lie? Could there be any greater foolishness? Thank you. So, do the many millions who gave their lives not offer us an experience, a proof, that this is no lie? Do they not? Of course they do. And what can we say about the Apostle Paul? A little further on he says: “Then by all the apostles. Last of all, as by one untimely born, He was seen by me also. For I am the least of the Apostles...”

“I am not worthy to be called an Apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain, but I labored more abundantly than they all; yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.” The last person of all to whom Christ—the risen Jesus—appeared was me, he says. Jesus appeared to me. For I am the last, the least of the Apostles. “Last of all, as by one untimely born, He was seen by me also.” The Greek word here literally means a miscarriage.

You know what he means: an embryo that did not complete its development in its mother’s womb and was miscarried. It is not yet fully formed—I mean bodily; it has not developed—and so it is called a miscarriage. “I am like a miscarriage,” Paul says. “Like a miscarriage.” See how deeply the Apostle Paul humbles himself. And yet Christ appeared to me also. Why am I like a miscarriage? Because I persecuted the Church of Christ. Here Paul recalls what he describes clearly and in detail elsewhere. The account appears twice—both times, forgive me, in the Acts of the Apostles. On the road to Damascus, before the gates of Damascus, Jesus appeared to him, and...

Was it merely a subjective experience, someone may ask? Impossible. You know that Paul’s conversion is psychologically inexplicable. It cannot be accounted for unless something truly happened—and that something was the appearance of Christ. Paul was a balanced man with a clear and disciplined mind. He was not scatterbrained, gullible, or frivolous. He was not a “sersémis”—that word comes from Asia Minor, which is why you laughed when I used it. It means a distracted person who is not thinking straight. You know, I had not used that word for years. I used to hear it, but I never said it myself. How did it come to me just now? Well, there it is. So then...

Was Paul a man who was not in his right mind? Quite the opposite. Did something merely subjective or psychological happen to him? He was traveling with the fury of a persecutor. He had a guard with him and letters of authorization for his mission; the Sanhedrin had entrusted him with the matter of the Christians. How, then, does he set out as a persecutor and return as an Apostle? No psychological explanation can account for this. The only explanation is that Paul saw Christ. He himself says so, again and again, in many places. Somewhere in one of his epistles he says, “Have I not seen the Lord Jesus?” “Have I not seen Jesus Christ?” he says. He declares it everywhere.

Subjective! Subjective? No—objectively real.

One sees the providence and love of God in the way He establishes the truth of everything concerning the Resurrection. What happened as they approached the gates of Damascus? A light flashed before Paul’s eyes, and Paul was blinded by it. He says that it was brighter than the sun. It was nearly midday as they were approaching the city, and a light shone brighter than the sun. The guards traveling with him also saw this light—the soldiers who were going to arrest Christians. This is the important point. It was not subjective; it was objectively real. And when Paul fell to the ground...

“I heard the voice: ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’” Paul had no favorable predisposition toward Jesus Christ—no influence that might have made him suddenly inclined to favor Christ in any way. When he heard, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” he asked, “Who are You, sir?” Of course, when confronted by a vision he used the word “lord” as we might say “Mr. So-and-so.” He did not yet mean “Lord Jesus.” “Who are You?” “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Do you see? “I am Jesus.” And when the Apostle made his defense before Festus, he said that everyone saw the light and everyone heard the voice.

They heard the voice—now pay close attention. The guard was not meant to understand the words being spoken. They were only meant to confirm that someone was speaking. It was like hearing someone outside calling out or talking: we hear that someone is speaking, but we cannot make out what is being said. In this way the guards experienced both the light and the fact that someone was speaking. But they could not distinguish the words, because they were not meant for them. Paul, however, understood them, because the message concerned him. Then the Lord told him to go into the city, where he would find a man named Ananias, and so forth, who would help him.

My dear friends, Paul would never have become Paul had he not seen the risen Jesus. But do you know what is especially important? Listen to this brief phrase: “By the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain, but I labored more abundantly than they all.” I labored more than the other Apostles. But this might have sounded boastful, so he immediately adds, “Yet not I”—not I; I, and yet not I. These are beautiful expressions. “But the grace of God,” he says, “which was with me”—the grace of God that was with me.

And even if the Apostle Paul were to read this text again today, he would not correct it; he would leave it as it is: “I labored more than the other disciples.” This is very significant. Do you know why? The other disciples saw Christ. What brought them to martyrdom was their love for Jesus Christ, together with their certainty that the Lord had risen. That is a great thing. The Apostle Paul now says: “I labored more in the sense that I traveled from region to region; I was constantly on the move.” Why? Because Paul loved Christ. He loved Him because he had seen Him and heard Him. Thank you.

In other words, he labored more because he had great love, and he had great love because he was certain and fully assured of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Somewhere in his letter to Timothy, he tells him to be gentle with those who oppose him. This is what I was telling you during the question period—that we must... No, forgive me; Saint Cyril said this earlier: we must be gentle and not quarrel. Be gentle, and remember that we too were once foolish. Do you see how the Apostle Paul describes the person who does not accept Christ? As foolish. Paul himself had become a persecutor of Christ, but the Lord had mercy on us.

And if the Lord has mercy on those who oppose Him today, they too will become believers. All these experiences gave Paul, we might say, material for his pastoral ministry. It is very important for a shepherd, one who tends a flock, to have certain experiences, whether practical or theoretical, however you wish to describe them, so that he may look upon others with very great love. Someone says, “I did this. Will God forgive me?” “Of course God will forgive you.” Do you doubt it? God will indeed forgive you. We must not begin saying to someone, “Have you no shame? You did this? Are you not ashamed of yourself?” May God never allow a spiritual father to learn from bitter experience what it means to speak in this way. And if he does sometimes speak like this, it should not be to wound the person,

but to show the gravity of the sin when the person who committed it sees it as something small. When someone says, “I did this and that,” he may reply, “Does that not concern you? Do you understand what you have done?” He enlarges it in the person’s eyes, bringing it back to its true dimensions, its true magnitude. Yet this too has a pastoral and psychological purpose, and so forth. It must not come from pride, as though to say, “You did this, whereas I did not.” God forbid! God forbid! Even if someone says, “I did not do this,” and appeals to his own experience, he should say, “I did not do it, but I too would have done it if God had not guarded me. God guarded me, and so I did not do it.”

I could have done it just as readily as you did. All these things are very important. This, my dear friends, is why the Apostle Paul speaks as he does. Then, after presenting these assurances, he draws his conclusions. What did we say first? “According to the Scriptures.” We have the events, the Scriptures, the prophecies, and the events themselves. This is what Saint Cyril has been doing until now: he cites the prophecies, then the witnesses to the events, whom I have just read to you, and now he comes to his conclusions. “Now if Christ is preached as having been raised from the dead”—if, then, it is proclaimed that Christ has risen from the dead—“how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?” How can some of you Corinthians say that there is no resurrection?

Listen to the consequence of denying the resurrection of the dead: “But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.” If you say that the resurrection of the dead will not take place, that the dead will not rise, then Christ did not rise either. For everything Christ experienced in this present world, and everything He allowed to become an event in His life, confirms and points to the stages of our own life. In other words, it defines the course of human existence: death and Resurrection. Christ did not rise merely to reveal His divinity—though He certainly did reveal it—but also to show the course of human existence: that we shall die and rise again. And He ascended. The Lord could simply have disappeared from among them without allowing them to witness His Ascension, but He did so to show that we too will be taken up. Does not the Apostle Paul say that “we shall be caught up in the clouds, into the air, to meet the Lord”? What does all this show? What happened to Christ will happen to us. And Christ confirms this through events, through history, not through theories. Therefore, if the dead do not rise, then, conversely, Christ did not rise either. But Christ did rise. Therefore, the dead will also rise. Yet there are still further consequences: “And if Christ has not been raised...”

“then our preaching is empty, and your faith is also empty.” If Christ did not rise, then our preaching is hollow and our faith is hollow. Why should we believe in the Gospel? For what reason? And “we are also found to be false witnesses concerning God, because we testified that God raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if it is indeed true that the dead are not raised.” We would stand as false witnesses before God, affirming that Christ rose, if in fact He did not rise. And further on he says, “Why, if in merely human terms I fought with beasts at Ephesus?” Why should I remain within the ascesis of the Gospel instead of living by the words, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die”? Why should we submit ourselves to daily martyrdom,

to daily hardship, if Christ did not rise and the dead are not raised? No, he says. In the end he declares, “But now Christ has been raised from the dead and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” Christ has indeed risen from the dead and has become the firstfruits, the beginning of the resurrection of the dead. The dead will rise. Why? Because Christ rose. All these things, my dear friends, are the great arguments that the word of God sets before us here. And Saint Cyril explains precisely how Christ rose and how the great consequence of Christ’s Resurrection is the resurrection of the dead. That is all for this evening.

Λες ότι πιστεύεις εσύ στον Χριστόν; Εάν λες ότι πιστεύεις, σημαίνει ότι πρέπει να κατοικεί μέσα σου ο Λόγος του Θεού. Πρέπει να αποδέχεσαι τη διδασκαλία του Χριστού. Κατά τα άλλα, πώς μπορείς να λέγεσαι πιστός; Τι έννοια έχει αυτό το «πιστός»; Δεν έχει έννοια πια. Γι’ αυτόν τον λόγο θα διορθώνουμε τους ανθρώπους, θα αντιμετωπίσουμε τις καταστάσεις. Είναι νεοειδωλολάτραι, άπιστοι οι σύγχρονοι χριστιανοί μας. Βαφτίστηκαν, βαφτίστηκαν, βαφτίστηκαν, αλλά πρέπει να τους μεταχειριζόμαστε όπως θα μεταχειριζόμαστε, πιθανώς, ειδωλολάτρες ανθρώπους, πιθανώς που δεν εγνώρισαν τίποτε από την πίστη. Πάντως, ως μέθοδος, δεν πρέπει να χρησιμοποιούμε ούτε τη βία ούτε τις φωνές ούτε να αγριεύουμε ούτε τους τσακωμούς ούτε τίποτα. Αντιτίθεται;

«Τουτέστι Χριστόν εκ νεκρών αναγαγείν». Δηλαδή, το «τουτέστι» θα πει «δηλαδή». Να έλθει επάνω η στιγμή, δηλαδή να αναστηθεί από τους νεκρούς ο Χριστός. Μην το πεις, λέει, αυτό στην καρδιά σου. Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει αυτό; Σημαίνει το εξής, αγαπητοί. Και αυτό είναι στο Δευτερονόμιο και αναφέρεται εις τον Χριστόν. Είναι προφητικό αυτό το σημείο. Γι’ αυτό και το χρησιμοποιεί στην προς Ρωμαίους ο Απόστολος Παύλος. Θα πει: μη πολυπραγμονήσεις και πεις μέσα σου: «Είναι δυνατόν ο Θεός να γίνει άνθρωπος;

Προφητικά και, δεύτερον, ιστορικά. Έτσι, εγώ τα είπα σε ανιούσα κλίμακα, τα γράφω εκείνο σε κατιούσα. Κάνει κατοχύρωση ιστορικοπροφητική. Δεύτερον, αναφέρεται εις την Ανάσταση του Χριστού ως γεγονός κατοχυρώσεως και, τρίτον, βγάζει συμπεράσματα. Εάν ο Χριστός ανέστη, τότε και οι νεκροί θα αναστηθούν. Εάν εσείς λέτε ότι οι νεκροί δεν θα αναστηθούν, τότε ούτε ο Χριστός ανέστη. Και αν ο Χριστός δεν ανέστη, τότε ματαία η πίστις ημών, μάταιον και το κήρυγμα ημών. Ας πάρω το πρώτο μέρος με δύο λόγια μόνο. Λοιπόν, τι λέγει στο 15 κεφάλαιο Α΄ Κορινθίους ο Απόστολος Παύλος;

Μπορούσα και εγώ να το κάνω τόσο καλά όσο κι εσύ. Αυτά είναι όλα πολύ σπουδαία. Γι' αυτό ο Απόστολος Παύλος, αγαπητοί μου, μιλάει όπως μιλάει. Και παρακάτω, αφού φέρνει αυτές τις κατοχυρώσεις, λέει τώρα: Τι είπαμε πρώτα; Κατά τας γραφάς. Τα γεγονότα, γραφές, προφητείες και γεγονότα. Αυτό που κάνει μέχρι τώρα ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, αναφέρει προφητείες. Μετά τους μάρτυρες των γεγονότων, αυτό που σας διάβασα, και τώρα στα συμπεράσματά του. «Ει δε Χριστός κηρύσσεται ότι εκ νεκρών εγήγερται», εάν λοιπόν ο Χριστός κηρύσσεται ότι ο Χριστός αναστήθη από τους νεκρούς, «πώς λέγουσι τινές εν υμίν ότι ανάστασις νεκρών ουκ έστιν;» Πώς λένε μερικοί από εσάς τους Κορινθίους ότι δεν υπάρχει;
