Summary

Saint Cyril answers objections to Christ’s three-day resurrection by presenting Jonah’s three days and nights in the sea creature as a prophetic type. The storms surrounding Jonah and Christ reveal their difference: Jonah had to be cast into the sea, whereas Christ commanded the winds and sea with divine authority. Saint Cyril argues that the same divine power that preserved Jonah raised Christ, whose continuing authority, the defeat of demons, and the rising of departed saints testify to His resurrection.

My beloved, we are at paragraph seventeen of Saint Cyril’s Fourteenth Catechetical Lecture. But again they say: “A dead man who had only recently died was raised by someone still living. Show us a passage in which a man who had been dead for three days rose again, or in which a man was buried and rose after three days.” You will remember that last time we spoke of the Prophet Elisha and the Prophet Elijah, who had raised the dead. Indeed, the Prophet Elisha raised two dead men: one while he was alive, and another after his own death.

Even after his death, he raised the dead man who was thrown into his tomb and came back to life when his body touched the tomb of the Prophet Elisha. But the Jews say to us: “Very well—a dead man who had only recently died was raised by someone still living.” Both the Prophet Elijah and Elisha, while they were alive, raised people who had only recently died. Remember especially the case of the Prophet Elisha: the child’s mother went and summoned him, and the prophet hurried to her. He hurried. So that dead child had only just died.

“But can you tell us,” the Jews say, “where you have seen it written that someone who had been dead for three days ever rose again?” Saint Cyril replies: “They ask us for testimony concerning the three days. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself gives it to us in the Gospels, saying: ‘For as Jonah was in the belly of the sea creature three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.’ And when we examine the account of Jonah, we find the divine working displayed in many points of likeness.”

The Lord did indeed say this—and it will be mentioned again a little further on, but there is no harm in saying something about it now. When the Lord wished to speak about His own Resurrection, He did not use any prophecy, not even one from the most eloquent Isaiah. He used only one prophecy, and it was typological. In other words, He appealed to an event: the event of Jonah. Jonah is a prophet in two ways. He is a prophet in the usual sense, but also...

he himself constitutes a prophecy. That is the astonishing thing. Jonah himself is a type of Jesus Christ, because the events that took place in the prophet’s life form the main body of the prophecy. His other prophecy is found in his ode, which is itself a prophecy of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. We shall examine that prophecy—not the typological prophecy, but his spoken prophecy, his ode—a little further on, in another paragraph or two. Yet it is striking that Christ did not use...

any of the prophets except this one. It is well known that the Lord did call upon the prophets, but sparingly. He left the Jews to discover these things for themselves. Only when He was challenged did He use prophets or prophecies referring to an event in His life, His conduct, and so forth. For example, when they disputed His divine-human nature, the Lord referred to the prophecy in Psalm 109: “The Lord said to my Lord,” and so forth, “Sit at My right hand...”

“until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” Then He puts this question to His listeners: David calls “Lord” the One who would be his descendant. “The Lord said to my Lord.” Who is this second Lord? The first is God. But who is the second Lord? This Lord is a descendant of David. How, then, can David call his own descendant “Lord”? For a great many prophecies say that He will be of the seed of David. The Apostle Paul expresses it in the same way. He says that his Gospel concerns the person of Jesus Christ, “of the seed of David.”

How, then, can He be of the seed of David while David also calls this distant descendant of his “Lord”? It means that He is both. These truths are not contradictory but complementary. When Holy Scripture says that He is of the seed of David, it means His human nature. And when David, in the Holy Spirit, calls his descendant “Lord,” as the Lord Himself says, this means that He is God. Thus the Father is Lord and the Son is Lord, with no distinction in the divine title: “The Lord said to my Lord.” The same name is used twice: Lord, Lord. Our Lord therefore used this prophecy to show His opponents...

the Pharisees, who He is when they ask Him, “Who are You?” Well, I will tell you who I am: I am the One of whom David speaks. And there are other passages and events as well. Take, for example, the question of the soul: Do souls exist or not? Do they live after death or not? What happens to them? The Lord appeals to the Pentateuch because the Sadducees accepted only the Pentateuch. He therefore uses a book they themselves accepted and says to them, “Have you not read?”

What message does Moses give us when he sees the bush that burned but was not consumed? What did God say there? “I am the Lord your God, the God of Abraham, your forefather—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” When He says that He is the God of Abraham, this means that Abraham exists. Otherwise, how could He be the God of Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob? If they no longer existed, how could He be the God of those persons? And the Lord draws the conclusion: “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” In other words, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are alive. They are alive—truly alive—and thus He answers the question of the soul’s immortality.

Here, then, when speaking about the Resurrection of the Dead, He takes up the typology of Jonah. It is noteworthy that Jonah is one of the twelve so-called Minor Prophets. They are called minor not because they are of lesser worth, but because their writings are shorter. Jonah himself spoke only his ode, which is prophetic, and the Lord makes use of this particular feature. What is it? When Jonah receives God’s command to preach metanoia—repentance—to the Ninevites, he does not obey. He refused because he had reasoned that God was sending His prophet to the...

enemies of Israel, for the Assyrians were Israel’s enemies. “How, then”—remember, we are in the eighth century before Christ—“can I now go to my enemies, to the enemies of our people, and preach metanoia—repentance?” So, as everyone knows, he set out in the opposite direction, intending to go to Tarshish, a city in Spain. He boarded a ship and headed west instead of going, as we might say, northeast. A storm arose. Jonah was asleep in the hold of the ship—and not merely asleep, but snoring. He was sound asleep and snoring. Then the sailors...

and the other passengers saw that they were in danger. They found Jonah asleep, woke him, and said, “We are about to drown, and you are sleeping and snoring? Get up and pray to the God in whom you believe.” As always on a ship carrying many travelers, each person believed in his own god. “Come, you too, and pray to your God, just as we have prayed to ours, so that He may have mercy on us and keep us from drowning.” Then Jonah said, “The sea will become calm if you throw me into it.” They were frightened and deeply troubled, and they said, in effect...

“God must already be angry with us, since we are in danger of drowning. Should we commit another crime—an immoral act—and make Him still angrier? Is that what you are telling us: to throw you into the sea so that God will become even more angry with us?” “No,” Jonah told them. “Throw me into the sea, and then the sea will become calm.” The sailors believed him and threw him overboard, because the storm had arisen on account of Jonah. Here God takes Jonah’s disobedience and makes it into a typological prophecy. They threw him into the sea, and immediately the sea grew calm. The men must have been astonished. Then they continued on their voyage and departed.

Jonah was thrown into the sea, and a great sea creature swallowed him. What kind of creature was it? You know that from time to time a whale appears in the Mediterranean Sea. Whales do not normally live in the Mediterranean, of course, but occasionally one appears there. I do not wish to speculate further. Everything is in God’s hands. He commands a whale, let us say—for whales are the largest creatures in the sea—“You will go into the Mediterranean, to the very place where that ship is sailing.” Everything is in God’s hands. As soon as Jonah was thrown overboard, he found himself in the mouth of the whale, the great sea creature. That is what “sea creature” means: a great fish!

It swallowed Jonah. As you know, the stomach of a fish—and indeed the stomach of every living organism—is a powerful organ. The moment food enters it, decomposition begins at once. The stomach fluids immediately begin breaking it down in order to digest it. Indeed, one might say that this process begins in the mouth. You need only eat a little meat and, an hour later, remove a small piece caught between your teeth. Smell it, and you will see what it smells like. The meat has begun to spoil—not that it has completely spoiled...

but it has been altered. By what? By saliva. What is saliva? Saliva is itself a digestive fluid and works together with the other gastric fluids. Secondly, we know that the stomachs of fish and birds are extraordinarily powerful: these two kinds of stomach can digest almost anything. So when Jonah fell into the stomach of Jonah—forgive me, I mean into the stomach of the fish—one would expect decomposition and digestion to begin immediately. Yet, my beloved, Jonah remained inside it for no less than three days and three nights.

Astonishing—truly astonishing. And what is especially remarkable is that Jonah retained his senses inside the belly of the sea creature. For there, within its belly—just imagine it—he composed his ode. He composed it inside the belly of the sea creature, and he even made a vow: “If I am saved, O Lord,” he said, “I will come to Your Temple and worship.” These are among the final verses of the whole ode. The fish moved eastward, in the opposite direction from the ship, which had been traveling west. It turned back and reached the coast, somewhere around Phoenicia, we might say.

There the sea creature vomited Jonah out. Jonah emerged safe and unharmed. This is truly astonishing. There is no Jew who does not accept this account. That is the remarkable point: no Jew rejects it. The Book of Jonah is a protocanonical book, fully accepted by the Jews. After the sea creature vomited him out, and he had suffered no harm—absolutely none—Jonah continued his journey. God’s word could not be set aside. He went to Nineveh, preached metanoia—repentance—and the rest that we know from Jonah’s story. What, then, took place here?

Something astonishing took place. Saint Cyril first identifies the similarities. Then we shall examine several further points, which the Lord Himself also emphasized: how Jonah was not corrupted, why he was not corrupted, and what this was meant to prefigure typologically. But let us now follow the text.

When we examine the account of Jonah, we find many striking parallels. There are similarities between Jonah and Jesus Christ. Jesus was sent to preach metanoia, repentance, and Jonah was also sent.

Why did Christ come into the world? To preach metanoia, repentance, and “the acceptable year of the Lord,” as Isaiah says. That is, a year acceptable to God, a time when God would hear man. And how would repentance be proclaimed? You know that the Lord began His preaching with repentance. After His Baptism, the Lord said, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” He preached repentance, just as John had preached repentance.

This showed that the preaching of Jesus continued the preaching of John, and that John and Jesus were not two persons in conflict, but two persons working together. John went before, and the Lord followed, for John was the Forerunner of the Lord. Thus the Lord preached repentance. And what did Jonah do? Why was he sent to Nineveh? To preach repentance. “But the one fled, not knowing what was to come; while the Other came willingly, to bring the repentance that leads to salvation.” Jonah changed course and tried to flee because he did not know...

what was going to happen. But the Lord came willingly to grant repentance for the sake of salvation. “Jonah was asleep in the ship and snoring while the sea was raging.” Jonah, he says, was asleep in the ship and snoring while the sea was storm-tossed and the weather was fierce. “And when Jesus slept according to the divine dispensation, the sea arose, so that afterward the power of Him who slept might be made known.” In the same way, he says, Jesus slept in the boat according to the divine dispensation.

That storm arose so that the power of the One sleeping in the boat might be revealed. “There they said, ‘Why are you snoring? Arise and call upon your God, so that God may save us.’” Jonah’s sailors said to him, “Why are you snoring? Get up and pray to your God, so that your God may save us.” “But here they say to the Master”—here, the disciples in the boat say—“Lord, save us!”

Save us! There, they said to Jonah, “Call upon your God”; but here the disciples say, “You save us.” “There they said, ‘Call upon your God’; and here, ‘Save us.’” This is what I have explained to you. “But Jonah said, ‘Take me and cast me into the sea, and the sea will become calm for you.’” What did Jonah say? “Throw me into the sea, and the sea will grow calm.” “But here He Himself rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” Here, however, Jesus commanded. He was not thrown into the sea; He gave the command, and at once the sea became still and calm. “The one entered the belly of the sea creature, but the Other descended willingly to where the spiritual sea creature of death lay.” This is very beautiful: Jonah, he says, descended into the belly of the sea creature, the great fish.

Of course, Jonah said, “Throw me in,” without knowing how the matter would end. But Jesus willingly descended into that spiritual sea creature of death—the sea creature of death. “He descended willingly,” Jesus descended of His own will, “so that death might vomit out those whom it had swallowed, according to what is written: ‘From the hand of Hades I will deliver them, and from death I will redeem them,’” as Hosea says in 13:14. He descended into Hades to make Hades vomit out...

those whom death had seized. And now we come to paragraph eighteen. “Having reached this point in our discourse, let us consider which is more difficult: for a man who has died and been buried to rise again, or for a man who has descended into the belly of a sea creature, into such heat within the animal, not to decay?” I hope you have not forgotten the position of the Jews, who said, “Show us an instance of a man rising after being dead for three days.” Saint Cyril replies, “Certainly, I will tell you: it is the story of Jonah.” Now that we have reached this point, Saint Cyril says, let us examine the matter and see which is more difficult.

Tell us, which is more difficult: for a man to rise again, or for a man who was thrown into the sea and entered the innermost belly of a great fish, where the process of decomposition takes place, and yet, after descending into such heat within the animal, not to rot or undergo any change? Tell me, he says, which is the greater and more difficult thing. Is it not more difficult for a man inside a fish’s stomach to remain free from decomposition than for someone to rise from the dead? Is that not more difficult? A dead body, if you will, is preserved for a time. It too decomposes, but under natural conditions its decomposition is far slower...

than that of a man or any living creature placed inside the stomach of another animal. Tell me, he says, which is more difficult? “Who among men does not know that stomachs possess such heat that they can dissolve even swallowed bones?” Who does not know, he says, how powerful stomachs are, so powerful that they can digest even bones? A grave does not digest bones. “How, then, did Jonah remain in the belly of the sea creature for three days and three nights without decaying?” Tell me, then, gentlemen of the Jewish people: how did Jonah remain for three days and three nights...

inside the sea creature without decomposing or rotting? “And since it is natural for every human being to be unable to live without breathing this air, how did he live for three days without breathing it?” There is also the question of breathing. How did he breathe inside the fish? How did he live? Tell us. You asked us to show you where it was written that a man dead for three days could rise. Here it is! Jonah found himself in a far worse condition than a dead man placed in a grave—for three days and three nights. There you have it. If Jonah suffered no harm, why do you disbelieve the Resurrection of Jesus Christ after He had been dead for three days? Why do you disbelieve? Saint Cyril’s argument is very beautiful. Moreover, the Lord Himself used this very argument before He was crucified. Do you know why the Lord said this? They asked Him, “What sign do You perform? What miracle will You do so that we may believe that You are the Messiah?” Why did they ask this, and what did they really want? They wanted a sign from the height or from the depth.

What does a sign from the height mean? It means doing something in heaven—for example, stopping the sun. Joshua did that. He performed such a sign, and we accepted him as the leader of our people. Or consider Moses: he brought us manna from heaven. Thus he performed signs from the height. What are signs from the depth? A sign from the depth is the raising of a dead person who comes up from Hades. That is a miracle from the depth. And there is also a miracle on the surface of the earth. What is such a miracle? A blind man receiving his sight, or a lame man walking. So they asked Him...

“What sign do You perform? Can You give us a sign from the depth or from the height?” Indeed, He would give them signs from the depth, the height, and the surface of the earth. And so, my beloved, when they asked the Lord for a sign from the height, the depth, or the surface, He gave them the sign of Jonah. Christ died and descended into Hades, as all the dead did. That is, Christ’s human soul, united of course with the divine Word (Logos), descended into Hades and then ascended.

He rose again. Christ’s Resurrection, therefore, is a sign from the depth. Then, upon the surface of the earth, after He had risen, His divinity revealed wondrous things. And even during His earthly life, how many miracles Christ performed! These were miracles on the surface, including even the raising of the dead. But I am speaking here only about His own Resurrection. There were so many deeds and so many miracles that John the Evangelist says that, if they were written down one by one, he supposed the books written could not be contained in all the libraries of the world. Thus He gave a sign from the depth and a sign upon the surface.

On the fortieth day, Christ ascended. The risen Jesus ascended into Heaven and gave them a sign from the height as well. Thus He who descended into Hades also ascended into Heaven. They had asked for one sign, either from the depth or from the height, and the Lord gave them three kinds of signs: from the height, from the depth, and upon the surface, as I have explained. But let us continue. The Jews answer and say, “The power of God descended together with Jonah, though Jonah is understood to have been unrighteous.”

“The Lord grants His servant life in order to give power to the preaching entrusted to him. Is He then unable to grant life to Himself?” The Jews say that the power of God descended with Jonah into the sea creature. In other words, God prevented Jonah from decaying inside its belly. Yes, Saint Cyril says, I believe that God sent His power. He sent His power to act and save Jonah within the creature’s innermost parts. But when the Lord Himself descended into Hades, did He not possess the power to act?

The One to whom testimony is borne is the Son of God. Either believe that event and believe this one also. If Jonah’s miracle is credible, then the miracle of the Resurrection is credible as well. Or, if this one is unbelievable, then the other is unbelievable too. If the miracle of the Resurrection is untrustworthy and without proof, then the miracle of Jonah’s preservation in the belly of the sea creature is also untrustworthy and without proof. “For my part, both are equally worthy of belief.” For me, Saint Cyril says, both the miracle of Jonah and the miracle of Christ are trustworthy. Jonah was the type, the prophetic foreshadowing, of Christ’s Resurrection. “For I believe that Jonah was preserved, since all things are possible with God.” Yes, I believe that Jonah was preserved, because nothing is impossible with God. “I believe that Christ also has risen from the dead.” In the same way, I believe that Christ rose from the dead. You must either accept both or reject both. “For I have many testimonies concerning this, both from Holy Scripture and from the power of the risen Lord that continues to work to this day. He alone descended into Hades, but many ascended with Him.”

“For at the moment of His death, many bodies of the departed saints were raised through Him.” Saint Cyril tells the catechumens that he has many testimonies: both from Holy Scripture—which we have examined so many times in our discussions, and which Saint Cyril has cited from the prophets in this catechesis—and from the power of the risen Jesus Christ that continues to work to this day. You know that this continuing power is, we might say, another aspect of the proof that Jesus is true.

As Saint Cyril said in an earlier catechesis when we spoke about the Precious Cross, and as we also mentioned in our previous discussion:

Elijah raised a dead man, but demons are not driven away in the name of Elijah. Of course Elijah raised the dead, but demons do not flee at his name. What does this mean? Wherever the name of Christ is proclaimed, the demons flee. They are bewildered and thrown into confusion; they lose all control, curse, suffer, and are put to flight. What does this mean? It means that Christ is real, and that the Son of God is the true God.

For if He were not truly God, we would not have this continuing power at work from someone who had died and whose life had simply ended. But He rose from the dead; He is in Heaven; He is the eternal God, who bears human nature eternally. And Saint Cyril says that He not only descended into Hades, but descended alone and ascended with many. For when the Lord rose, many of the departed saints were also raised through Him. And as the Gospel says a little further on, in Matthew 27:52, many appeared. They entered the Holy City, that is, Jerusalem, and appeared to many people. This confirmed the Resurrection of Christ, showing that His Resurrection was not an ordinary resurrection like that of Lazarus, the son of the widow of Nain, or the daughter of Jairus. This was His own Resurrection: He raised Himself. He Himself said, “I have the power to lay it down, and I have the power to take it up again. I lay down My life—My soul, My life—and I take My life back again. I Myself!” No one else acts to raise Me; I raise Myself. Of course, you may tell me that there are passages saying that God raised the Son. That is because all three Persons act together. Thus, what is expressed here is that the Resurrection of Christ is the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Let us go on to paragraph nineteen. “Death was astonished when it saw someone new descending into Hades, someone who was not held by the bonds found there.” Death, personified here, was amazed and stood astonished when it saw someone new descending into Hades who could not be held by its bonds, by the chains that were there. What are these bonds? Let us dwell on this briefly, my dear friends, and look at it more closely, so that we may understand what Christ has brought us. For I fear that we cannot fully grasp what Christ has given us. Do we understand it? While man lives within creation, as we do, we certainly say that we are free. But do you know where our freedom lies? Our freedom lies in our ability to do good or evil. This is not really a matter of choosing between the two. Rather, it is a matter of having the ability to commit either good or evil. It is not simply a question of choice, because if it were, why would God punish us when we chose evil?

Besides, who told you that we can speak of freedom in the way we imagine it or want it to be? Poor, tragically misguided Kazantzakis asked for these words to be written on his grave: “I believe in nothing. I am free.”

That is exactly how it is written: “I am free.” Poor Kazantzakis, free from what? The bonds of Hades and death seized you. In what sense are you free? Even while you were alive, who was truly free? My dear friends, we are confined within two dreadful and inescapable bonds.

These bonds are space and time. You cannot escape either space or time. Why can you not escape them? It is very simple: because you yourself, as a human being, exist in space and time. At this moment I am what I am; I weigh a certain amount and have certain dimensions. Today I occupy space; I am spatial. At some point I was born, and so I exist within time, within the bonds of time. Therefore, when you say that you are free, you are not. You are bound by space and time. And then, who told you that anyone will ask you

whether you want to die or not? If someone tries to take off my jacket, I may pull it from his hands and free it from his grasp. Or I may be walking along carrying a bag of money when someone comes and snatches it from me. I struggle with him and take the bag back into my own hands.

But when the time comes for my soul to be separated from my body, what will you do then, O man? Can you prevent it? Who lives forever? Of the billions who have lived upon the earth, who has remained alive until today? Dreadful indeed are the bonds of Hades. Hades seizes you, and whether you like it or not, you will die. And once you have died, there where you find yourself,

can you ever escape the bonds of Hades? Death has seized you. How can you get out? Can you escape? It is impossible. And even supposing you could escape, your body has decomposed. Go on, then—take it back! Do you understand what these bonds are? They are dreadful, impenetrable, insurmountable bonds. And Christ has freed us from them: first, from the bonds of sin, and second, from the bonds I have just described. For my body will be made new; I shall rise from the dead, and my soul will depart from Hades.

This space and time that hold me captive today will give way to a new and, if I may call it so, wholly different kind of space-time: the Kingdom of God. This is what it means to say that Christ is the Savior. He is the Savior, the true Savior. He truly saves. He is not called a savior in the limited sense in which we apply that word to people who rescue us in one circumstance or another. Christ truly saves; He saves the whole human person. I say these things, my dear friends, so that we may understand who Jesus Christ is and what He saves us from. We often say, “What does Christ do? Well, He saves us from our sins.” And we stop there, at “from our sins,” narrowing the gift of salvation that He has given us. So when death saw someone descending into Hades who was not held by its bonds, that someone was able to descend freely. Indeed, how did Christ descend? Did He descend as a prisoner of death and Hades? No, no. He did not descend as one defeated, but as the Victor. Look at the beautiful Canon for Pascha and see how He descended. He descended as Sovereign, as Master, as the One who takes the spoils of victory. He took the righteous as His spoils.

He had no need of the others; they remained in Hades, in the state in which Hades already held them. Who were these others? The ungodly. But He took all the righteous and raised them, not to the earth, but to Paradise—that distinctive realm which offers an anticipation and foretaste of the Kingdom of God. Thus He ascended victorious from Hades and then placed them in Paradise. Among them was the thief, to whom He said, “Truly, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” When? Today!

Before the sun sets, you will be with Me in Paradise. Notice this word, “today.” The sun set at six in the evening. Before the sixth hour is over, you will be with Me in Paradise. Most truly! And afterward the Lord ascended to the earth. See how freely the Lord moves, as though taking a walk: He descends into Hades, opens Paradise, comes to the earth, and appears to His disciples, both men and women. He is truly triumphant, truly the Victor in the fullest sense of the word. Who has ever descended into Hades and ascended from Hades? No one, no one. And so, my dear friends, Saint Cyril continues here and says:

“Why, O gatekeepers of Hades, did you shrink back when you saw Him? What is this strange fear that has seized you?” What fear is this that overcame you—this strange and unfamiliar fear? For you were the lords of death, its gatekeepers and guards. This, of course, is a personification. “Death fled, and by its flight its cowardice was exposed. The Holy Prophets hastened forward, along with Moses the Lawgiver, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Samuel, and Isaiah.”

“John the Baptist also came, the one who had asked and testified: ‘Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for another?’ All the righteous whom death had swallowed were delivered. For the King proclaimed by those noble heralds had to become their Deliverer. Then each of the righteous cried out: ‘O death, where is your victory? O Hades, where is your sting?’ For the Author of victory has delivered us.” When Christ descended—how beautiful this is!—the Holy Prophets hastened to meet Him. There were the Prophets, Moses the Lawgiver, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Samuel, Isaiah, and John the Baptist. Look at that beautiful Orthodox icon of the Resurrection of Christ. See how Christ is depicted there, raising up

Adam and Eve, for Adam and Eve are in Paradise. Adam and Eve are in Paradise. Where are those who say, “Ah, those two great sinners”? Be assured, my dear friends, that every one of us repeats the ancestral sin. Each of us repeats it in our own life no less than those first ancestors whom we accuse of bringing death into the world. And what is the ancestral sin? What lies at its heart? It is the desire to become God without God; to say that I am sufficient in myself. Man says this in every age. It is to embrace an anthropocentric outlook: I am the center of everything, not God; I myself and my own powers are the center. This is the ancestral sin. “I do not want You, God. I do not need You. Whatever I do, I will do by myself.” This is the ancestral sin. So, my dear friends, let us not condemn our first-created ancestors, because we repeat their sin. And, if you will, they had no one before them who had committed it, and they had not seen its consequences. But we know what happened to our first ancestors. Why, then, in the full light of Christ and having received Baptism, do we repeat the ancestral sin? That is the question.

Are we or are we not worse than our ancestors, Adam and Eve? Let us blame ourselves, then, and not Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve are in Paradise, and we too can find ourselves there when we abandon our anthropocentrism and cease saying, “I do not need God; I am sufficient in myself.” Let us abandon this self-centeredness, this anthropocentrism of ours. Then we shall draw near to the Lord, and then we shall certainly be saved. So they hastened forward. Iconography presents this beautifully, showing all these righteous people behind Christ, with John standing immediately behind Him.

With His two hands the Lord raises Adam with one and Eve with the other. Surely you have seen this icon. And each of them proclaimed the words quoted by the Apostle Paul, words also found in Isaiah, from whom the Apostle Paul takes them: “O death, where is your victory? O Hades, where is your sting?” You sent all of us down here into Hades, but now Christ saves us. O death, where is your victory, with which you swept us all away? O death—or rather, forgive me, O Hades—where is your poisoned sting, with which you struck us like a wasp and brought us death? “For the Author of victory has delivered us.”

He who is the Author and Giver of victory has delivered us, and the Author of victory is none other than Jesus Christ. We now come to paragraph twenty. “The Prophet Jonah fulfilled the type of our Savior when, from the belly of the sea creature, he prayed and said: ‘I cried out in my tribulation,’ and then: ‘from the belly of Hades.’ And yet he was inside the sea creature. Though he was within the creature, he says that he was in Hades, because he was a type of Christ, who was to descend into Hades.” Let us now look briefly at Jonah’s ode, for Saint Cyril selects two or three passages from that wonderful and astonishing hymn, which Jonah composed prophetically and by divine inspiration inside the belly of the sea creature. What did he say as he prayed within it? “I cried out in my tribulation,” and then, “from the belly of Hades.” From where did I cry out? To cry out means to call with a loud voice. You know, when we find ourselves in danger—perhaps falling from the roof of a ten-story building, I do not know—if we have time, we cry, “My God, save me! Mother! Father!” I do not know whom we call upon, but we cry aloud. So when the fish swallowed Jonah, Jonah cried out. This was perfectly natural, for he was in an extremely desperate situation. And from where did he cry? Listen to what Jonah says: “From the belly of Hades.”

How strange! Saint Cyril points out that Jonah did not say, “from the belly of the sea creature.” Why does he say that he cried out from the belly not of the creature, but of Hades? Quite simply because he was a type of Christ and spoke in the person of Christ, since Christ was going to descend into Hades. Astonishing! “And a little later he says, in the person of Christ, prophesying with the utmost clarity”—that is, prophesying most plainly. Do you see? In the person of Christ, speaking as Christ, because he was a type of Christ. Astonishing, my dear friends! “My head sank into the clefts of the mountains.” “Sank” here is from the verb used of the setting sun: the sun sank below the horizon.

“My head sank into the clefts of the mountains”—into the crevices of the mountains—“and yet he was in the belly of the sea creature.” Saint Cyril asks, “What clefts of mountains? Where was Jonah? He was inside the belly of the sea creature. What mountains does it contain?” What mountains are you talking about when you say that your head sank into their clefts? “But I know,” he says, “that I bear the type of Him who was to lie in a tomb hewn from rock.” What does this mean? Ah, Jonah says, I know that I bear the type here. Jonah is speaking in the person of Christ. Christ’s head rested within a cleft in the mountain, inside the rock-hewn tomb. There

His head rested, whereas there are no mountains inside the belly of the sea creature. “And while Jonah was in the sea, he said, ‘I descended into the earth.’” What is this? He says, “I descended into the earth”? What earth, when he was in the sea, inside the belly of the sea creature? “Because he bore the type of Christ, who descended into the heart of the earth,” for Christ Himself descended into the heart of the earth. My dear friends, do you see? Astonishing! Jonah speaks in such words as though he truly were Christ. Thus, in Matthew, chapter twelve, from verse forty onward, we read Christ saying:

“You will be given,” He says, “only the sign of the Prophet Jonah. For just as the Prophet Jonah was in the belly of the sea creature for three days and three nights, so shall the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.”

Εκεί, και εξέρασε το κήτος τον Ιωνά. Ο Ιωνάς βγήκε σώος και αβλαβής. Αυτό είναι καταπληκτικό πράγμα, αυτό. Δεν υπάρχει Εβραίος που να μην το δέχεται αυτό. Εδώ είναι τώρα το καταπληκτικό. Δεν υπάρχει Εβραίος. Το βιβλίο του Ιωνά είναι πρωτοκανονικό βιβλίο. Είναι ένα βιβλίο που είναι πλήρως αποδεκτόν από τους Εβραίους. Και αφού τον ξέρασε, βεβαίως, το κήτος, χωρίς να πάθει τίποτα, μα απολύτως τίποτα, ο Ιωνάς συνέχισε το ταξίδι του. Δεν έπρεπε να ματαιωθεί ο λόγος του Θεού. Πήγε στη Νινευή, εκήρυξε μετάνοια και τα λοιπά που ξέρουμε από την ιστορία του Ιωνά. Εδώ, λοιπόν, τι έγινε;

«Τω δε δουλωμένω κηρύγματι την δύναμιν παρέχει το ζην ο Κύριος. Αυτός δε εαυτώ παρασχείν άρα ου δύναται;» Αλλά λέγουν οι Εβραίοι ότι κατέβηκε μαζί με τον Ιωνά στο κήτος η δύναμη του Θεού. Δηλαδή, ο Θεός εμπόδισε τη σήψη του Ιωνά μέσα στην κοιλιά του κήτους. Μάλιστα, ο Θεός στέλνει τη δύναμή Του, το πιστεύω, λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλος. Στέλνει τη δύναμή Του να ενεργήσει και να σώσει τον Ιωνά μέσα στα σπλάχνα του κήτους. Ο ίδιος, όταν κατέβηκε εις τον Άδη, δεν είχε τη δύναμη να ενεργεί;

Πηγαίνουμε στην 19η παράγραφο. Εξεπλάγη ο θάνατος θεωρήσας καινόν τινα κατελθόντα εις Άδην, δεσμοίς τοις αυτόθι μη κατεχόμενον. Ο θάνατος, ο οποίος εδώ προσωποποιείται, εξεπλάγη, έμεινε έκπληκτος, όταν είδε κάποιον καινούριον να κατεβαίνει στον Άδη, ο οποίος δεν κρατιόταν, μη κατεχόμενον, δεν κρατιόταν από τους δεσμούς, από τα δεσμά που ήσαν εκεί, τα αυτόθι δεσμά. Ποια είναι αυτά τα δεσμά; Λίγο να μείνουμε σε αυτό, αγαπητοί μου, έτσι λιγάκι να πούμε. Να το δούμε πιο κοντά, για να καταλάβουμε τι θα πει, τι μας έφερε ο Χριστός. Γιατί φοβάμαι ότι δεν μπορούμε να λογαριάσουμε τι μας έφερε ο Χριστός. Το καταλαβαίνουμε; Όταν ο άνθρωπος είναι μέσα στη δημιουργία, όπως είμαστε εμείς, λέμε βεβαίως ότι είμαστε ελεύθεροι. Η ελευθερία μας όμως ξέρετε πού έγκειται; Η ελευθερία μας έγκειται στο να κάνουμε το καλό ή το κακό. Όχι βεβαίως ότι έχουμε θέμα εκλογής. Δεν τίθεται θέμα εκλογής, αλλά τίθεται θέμα δυνατότητος διαπράξεως ή του αγαθού ή του κακού. Όχι θέμα εκλογής, γιατί άμα ήταν θέμα εκλογής, τότε γιατί μας τιμωρεί ο Θεός, εάν διαλέξουμε το κακόν;
