Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Pentecost and the gift of tongues as decisive signs that Jesus Christ rose, ascended, and was enthroned at the Father’s right hand. Scriptural prophecies and the self-contradictory story that the disciples stole Christ’s body are offered as reasons to remain steadfast in confessing the Resurrection. Because Christ assumed humanity as the new Adam and His flesh was deified from conception, His Cross was a freely chosen saving death rather than an imaginary or involuntary defeat.

What, then, is this, someone may ask, my beloved? We are in paragraph 7 of Saint Cyril’s Fourteenth Catechetical Lecture. Let us continue: “And what, then, is this? And what is the sign of Him who has risen?” What is the sign that reveals the One who rose? “What follows makes it clear to us, for in the same passage the prophet says: ‘Then I will change the speech of the peoples.’ For after the Resurrection, when the Holy Spirit had been sent, the gift of tongues was given.” This is spoken by the Prophet Zephaniah, my beloved.
It is in chapter 3, verse 9. The fulfillment of this prophecy is recorded in Acts 2:4, in the event of Pentecost. Let us examine it. What is the sign of Him who has risen? You may remember, when we studied the opening chapters of the Acts of the Apostles and came to Pentecost, we said that the sign that Christ rose, ascended, and sat at the right hand of God the Father is Pentecost—that is, the descent of the Holy Spirit. For it would have been impossible for the Spirit of God to descend
upon a world that had not been reconciled with God. Of course, the Spirit of God was still present when God closed Paradise and cast out our first parents. Even then, we see that the Spirit of God remained among human beings, at least in an elementary way. For although God withdrew His grace, He did not withdraw it entirely. I assure you, otherwise the words of the Psalmist would have been fulfilled: “When You turn away Your face, they shall be troubled.”
All things—the whole creation—when You turn away Your face, will enter into trial and turmoil. Nothing can stand. This is what we were saying during the questions: “Without Me you can do nothing.” Yes, everything is thrown into turmoil. Yet when God withdraws His grace, He does not withdraw it completely. When He closed Paradise and our first parents were supposedly left without God, they were not truly without Him. They no longer enjoyed the abundant grace they had possessed in Paradise, but how often do we see God intervening in human life?
He intervenes when He rebukes Cain for murdering his brother Abel. Does He not intervene in Noah’s life, telling him, “You shall build an ark,” and in countless other ways? Yet when people sin excessively—very excessively—then God withdraws even those small portions, so to speak, of His divine grace. Nevertheless, God’s grace is never withdrawn one hundred percent. Never. It always remains. Remember how God describes the age of Noah. He speaks to Noah, who is regarded as a friend of God.
God reveals His plan to him, just as Abraham is called a friend of God because God reveals His plan to him. Indeed, at the hospitality of Abraham, the three Persons seem to speak among themselves: “Shall We hide from Our servant Abraham what We are saying? We shall not hide it, but reveal it to him.” This is, we might say, the revelation of God’s plans. So what does God say to Noah? “My Spirit shall not remain.” My Spirit, He says, will not remain among these people, in this generation, but I will withdraw My Holy Spirit, “because they are flesh”—because they are carnal,
carnally minded, just like our own age. Do you think our age possesses the grace of God? And yet the grace of God is present.
That is to say...
That is to say, you understand that when sin increases, the grace of God is withdrawn in the Old Testament. I said, in the Old Testament. You may object: “But did you not just ask whether we possess the Spirit of God today?” You may also say: “Does not the Apostle Paul declare, ‘Where sin abounded, grace abounded all the more’?” You could certainly say that. My beloved, all these things work together, expressing the richness of God’s plan according to the free disposition of human beings. But...
God’s grace came; the Holy Spirit came. Was the world of the Old Testament entirely deprived of the Spirit of God? No. But is the Spirit of God somehow miserly? Pay attention to this observation. As I speak now, and as has happened many times before, I may seem to contradict myself, just as Holy Scripture may seem to contradict itself. But if we look carefully, we shall understand that there is no contradiction, only a distinction. I already asked: Is the Spirit of God present or not? Yes, He is; but when people harden their hearts, the Spirit of God departs from them.
Our age does not have the Spirit of God, and so it behaves foolishly—it does foolish things. If it had the Spirit of God, it would understand many things. And yet the Spirit of God is present, because there are remarkable people who possess the Spirit of God and who see and understand very clearly. Thus, there is no contradiction, but a distinction. Let me return to the point: What came to show that Jesus truly rose, ascended, and went up into Heaven? What further proof is needed? Pentecost is the greatest evidence of the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the enthronement of the Son of God at the right hand of God.
We said this when we were studying this passage in the Acts of the Apostles. Saint Cyril now asks: “What is the sign of Him who has risen?” Sometimes Saint Cyril takes up fine details; at other times he takes up great and weighty matters. Here we have something weighty, for the Prophet Zephaniah says in 3:9: “Then I will change the speech of the peoples.” How is this prophecy interpreted? Saint Cyril inserts an explanation in parentheses: “For after the Resurrection, when the Holy Spirit had been sent, the gift of tongues was given.”
At that time the Apostles spoke in many languages: this was the gift of tongues. That is why the prophet says, “Then I will change the speech of the peoples,” and this is evidence of Christ’s Resurrection. If you read this by yourselves, you may ask, “What does one thing have to do with the other?” I have explained that Pentecost is the greatest evidence of Christ’s Resurrection. The Prophet Zephaniah continues: “That they may serve the Lord under one yoke.” What is the purpose of this transformation of speech, this multiplicity of languages? The purpose of Pentecost and the miracle of the gift of tongues is this: “That they may serve the Lord under one yoke.”
They are to be in the service of the Lord—that is, in submission to God and to His will—under one yoke alone. Here there appears to be a contradiction: we have a multiplicity of languages, yet unity among human beings. But this multiplicity of languages did not serve confusion, as it did at the Tower of Babel. There, the multiplicity of languages served to scatter humanity. “Come, let Us go down,” God said. “Let Us go down” refers to the three Persons. “Come, let Us go down and confuse their languages.” Thus, in that case, the multiplicity of languages led to the scattering of humanity.
At Pentecost, however, the multiplicity of languages served the hearing of the one and only Gospel proclamation: the preaching of Christ. It served to proclaim the name of Christ among the nations. Consequently, when the nations believe amid this multiplicity of languages, there is one faith—one yoke, one faith, one Lord. “And what is the token? In the same prophet it is added: ‘That they may serve the Lord under one yoke.’” What, then, is the token, the sign? “From the ends...” Zephaniah continues, my beloved. These verses follow one after another in the Prophet Zephaniah, all in the third chapter,
verses 9, 10, and 11. What does he say? “From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia they shall bring sacrifices to Me.” From the farthest reaches of the rivers of Ethiopia, he says, they shall bring offerings to Me. “They shall bring to Me” is the future tense of the verb “to bring.” They shall bring Me sacrifices.
Pay attention. Take careful note of this point.
Saint Cyril says: “Have you seen what is written in Acts, when the Ethiopian eunuch came from beyond the rivers of Ethiopia?” Taken literally, this refers to the Ethiopian who came from the farthest reaches of Ethiopia.
“Therefore, when both the particular character of the times and of the place, when...” Forgive me. Here it speaks of the farthest reaches of the rivers. Do you know what is meant by the farthest reaches of the rivers?
We must turn to the Book of Genesis and the four rivers mentioned there: the Euphrates, the Tigris, the Pishon, and the Gihon. As for these four rivers, the Gihon and the Pishon do not appear to be distant rivers; perhaps they are tributaries of the Tigris and the Euphrates. Yet interpreters often say that they are the Nile and the Indus. This would encompass a vast expanse. However the matter may stand, the point is that the prophecy intends to show a great breadth of lands and many peoples.
They will desire to offer their sacrifice. And this sacrifice, my beloved, is not offered in the old temple; it is the new sacrifice. And what is this? It is the celebration of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. People do not need to travel anywhere, because the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—the sacrifice above all sacrifices—is celebrated throughout the whole world.
“Therefore, when the Scriptures tell you both the appointed time and the distinguishing feature of the place, as well as the signs that followed the Resurrection, be assured of the Resurrection, and let no one shake you from confessing that Christ has risen from the dead.” What have we spoken about so far? Saint Cyril asks. We spoke about the time of the Resurrection. We spoke about the distinguishing feature of the place: that the place is called the Martyrium—that is, the church built by Saint Helen is called the Martyrium. And, as I reminded you last time, the prophet speaks of this. Which prophet speaks here? Once again, Zephaniah says: “Therefore wait for Me, says the Lord, until the day of My rising.”
We spoke about the Martyrium last time. When all these things are present, he says—when the signs mentioned in Holy Scripture, the signs of the Resurrection, are present—then take heed: “Be assured, therefore, of the Resurrection.” Be confirmed and fully convinced of the Resurrection, of the reality of the Resurrection, “and let no one shake you from confessing that Christ has risen from the dead.” I shall tell you this once again. These things are useful. You know how much has been written, is still being written, and will yet be written against Christ’s Resurrection.
Do you realize that Christ’s Resurrection is the heavy artillery of Christianity?
For no matter what is attacked—whether Christ’s teaching or Christ’s miracles are attacked by those who deny Him—they accomplish nothing, because Christ’s Resurrection sweeps His enemies aside. The enemies of Christianity, the enemies of the person of Christ, have therefore identified, quite correctly, what they must do: deny Christ’s Resurrection. They devise every possible scheme to deny Christ’s Resurrection. Yet everything that has been written, is being written, or will be written in search of arguments against it will refute itself—listen carefully, it will refute itself—so that...
Christ’s Resurrection may always be proclaimed whole and intact. Let me give you an example of such a self-refuting claim. What did the Jews say to the soldiers who came and informed them that Christ had risen? The first to deny Christ’s Resurrection were the Jewish rulers. “You must say and spread the story: ‘While we were sleeping, the disciples came and stole the body.’ If this reaches Pilate, your governor, we will keep you out of trouble. Do not be afraid; we will speak to him appropriately.” Who knows how much money was being handed to Pilate? God alone knows what sums have been paid from that time until today to carry out such purposes throughout the world—wretched, pitiable people, worthy of many tears. But here the story refutes itself. What did you say? “While we were sleeping”? Then what sort of guards were you? Did all of you fall asleep? Yet you yourselves had obtained Pilate’s permission to post guards. “Sir,” they said to Pilate, “we remembered that this deceiver said, ‘On the third day I shall rise.’” How strange! The disciples did not remember it, although the Lord had repeatedly gathered them privately and told them that He would be condemned to death on the Cross and would rise on the third day. They did not remember. This happened by God’s providence...
so that the Resurrection might be confirmed even more clearly and no one might suppose that the disciples were speaking about it merely from some subjective impression. No—the event was objective. Yet God placed the remembrance in the minds of His enemies. “We remembered,” they said. “Therefore, we earnestly ask you to seal the tomb.” “You have a guard,” Pilate said. “Go and make it as secure as you know how.” Take soldiers as guards, he says, and seal the tomb as you judge best. And you can imagine how hard the enemies must have worked to erase all memory of His rising: how thoroughly they must have sealed that tomb and what guards they stationed outside it. Wretched men, you sealed it...
you posted the guards, and now what do you tell them to say? “We were asleep when the disciples came and stole the body.” I tell you, they refute themselves and make themselves ridiculous. All the enemies of Christ’s Resurrection always meet the same fate. But what does Saint Cyril say here? Ground yourself securely in the prophetic word and in what I am now teaching you, so that whatever may be said against Christ’s Resurrection, you, the catechumen, will stand firm. “Be assured, therefore, of the Resurrection, and let no one shake you from confessing that Christ has risen from the dead.” Paragraph eight.
“Receive yet another testimony from the eighty-seventh Psalm, where Christ speaks through the prophets. For He who spoke then later came among us: ‘O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried out by day and by night before You’; and shortly afterward: ‘I became like a helpless man, free among the dead.’ He did not say, ‘I became a helpless man,’ but, ‘like a helpless man.’ For He was crucified not from weakness but willingly, and His death did not come from involuntary weakness. ‘I was counted among those who go down into the pit.’ And what is the identifying sign? ‘You have put my acquaintances far from me.’”
For the disciples fled. “Will You work wonders for the dead?” Then, shortly afterward: “But I, O Lord, cried out to You, and in the morning my prayer shall come before You.” Do you see how this indicates the precise time both of the Passion and of the Resurrection? Let me take it from the beginning. Saint Cyril inserts a brief but precious explanatory comment in parentheses. He says: “Receive yet another testimony recorded in the eighty-seventh Psalm.” There Christ speaks through the prophets—that is, as the Word, as God the Word, He speaks to the prophets, and the prophets speak to the people.
All these things are recorded. And then, in parentheses: “For He who spoke then later came among us.” The One who spoke to the prophets at that time was afterward found among us; that is, He became man. This, my beloved, is taken from Isaiah 52:6. I shall tell you Isaiah’s prophecy. How is it expressed here? Saint Cyril gives this parenthetical explanation in his own words: the One who spoke to the prophets is the same One who later became man. What does the Prophet Isaiah say? Listen: “Therefore My people shall know My name in that day, for I Myself am He who speaks.”
What a beautiful saying! Why does He say, “My people shall know My name in that day”? What day is that? The day of the Incarnation. And what is My name? What is the name of God? Truly, what is God’s name? You know that God reveals His name progressively. Holy Scripture itself tells us this. When God appears to Moses, He tells him His name—because Moses had asked the Lord, “What is Your name, Lord?” God says to Moses, “My name is He Who Is, the Existing One.” There is much that could be said here.
But let us not dwell on it. According to one view, the name Yahweh—the so-called Tetragrammaton—is the name of God written with four consonants. The vowels are missing, because that is how the Jews wrote in those days; it is well known that they wrote only the consonants. It is much like the abbreviations we find in Byzantine writing. You see “Jesus Christ,” for example, written with the abbreviated Greek letters; or “Conquers”; or “Mother of God,” written with abbreviated letters, which we read in full. It is assumed that we know the words and can supply the missing letters. The Byzantines often wrote this way on icons. The Jews did the same. Today, however, the pronunciation of the name has been lost because the vowels are missing.
We do not know how the name of God was pronounced, and various interpretations and proposed pronunciations have been offered. In any case, the form that came to prevail is “Yahweh,” and so forth. “Jehovah” is rather far-fetched; it is an expanded form of the name. Be that as it may, God says to Moses, “My name is Lord—Yahweh—He Who Is.” These are equivalent names. He Who Is, the Existing One, Lord, and Yahweh are equivalent, I repeat. “I did not reveal this name to My servant Abraham.” What name did God give Abraham? The name “God.”
Nothing more: “God” to Abraham, “Lord” to Moses. We have a second revelation of God. Do not ask me to explain at greater length what “God” means, what “Lord” means, what the difference is, and how great that difference is, because it would take us far too long. I shall tell you only that there was also a third revelation of God. It is the final revelation, and there will be no other, either in the present age or in the age to come. And what, my beloved, is this final and definitive name of God? The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Christ says in His high-priestly prayer:
“I have revealed Your name to mankind.” What does it mean that He revealed God’s name to mankind? Is not the God of our fathers, whom we discussed yesterday while examining the Acts of the Apostles, God the Lord—Yahweh? What new revelation could there be? This is the revelation. Listen to how the Gospel according to Matthew ends. Christ says to His disciples: “Go to the ends of the earth, to all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Take heed: He does not say “in the names,” but “in the name,” because the name is one, since God is one.
Therefore, the words “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”—a phrase now, rather than a single word—are one name. When unfolded, of course, this name reveals the relations of the persons and the essence, and so forth; and here we enter, so to speak, into an analysis of God—“so to speak,” because God cannot truly be analyzed. Let us return to the prophecy of Isaiah 52:6: “Therefore My people shall know My name in that day.” This means that until then the people did not know the complete name of God. They spoke of God, the Lord, He Who Is, but they did not know the name “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Therefore, they would learn this name “in that day.” And that day is the day of the Incarnation, the time of the Incarnation. By whom would it be revealed? By the Son of God. The prophecy continues: “For I Myself am He who speaks,” because I Myself am the One speaking. When, and where? Then, through the prophets; now, in the Incarnation. It is the same person. I told you yesterday that we must learn who Jesus Christ is—we must know His identity. For the Antichrist will conceal his identity, but we shall discover and expose it. Do not forget this!
The Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, tells us this. This is what the two prophets, Elijah and Enoch, will do. They will reveal the identity of the Antichrist and say, “This is the deceiver of the people, the one who leads the people astray,” as a Patristic text puts it. This is he—the deceiver of the people. And because the Antichrist will then be exposed—his unveiling will have taken place—he will become enraged and will hang these two prophets; he will kill them. You see that the Antichrist will conceal himself and will have to be exposed. God, by contrast, reveals Himself and asks us to search deeply into that revelation, so that we may be firmly grounded in the knowledge of the true God.
Therefore, we must know the identity of Jesus Christ, so that we may remain faithful worshippers of His person and not be led astray by the Antichrist. Let us continue. He did not say—excuse me—he says, “I became.” The Greek word means “I became,” not “I begot.” “I became like a helpless man, free among the dead.” These words are found in the eighty-seventh Psalm, as the Holy Father has already told us, in verse five. “I became,” He says; I found Myself, I stood, like a helpless man...
free among the dead. He did not say, “I became a helpless man,” but, “like a helpless man.” It is not written, “I stood as a helpless man,” but, “I stood like a helpless man.” Take careful note of this. Where exactly does its meaning lie? Saint Cyril now says: “For He was crucified not from weakness but willingly.” He was not crucified because He was powerless—because they seized and arrested Him and hung Him on the Cross—but because He allowed this to happen to Him. Therefore, He was not a helpless man, but was like a helpless man, which means that He had the authority not to be arrested. Listen now to the account. When the Apostle Peter drew his sword and cut off Malchus’s ear, the Lord said to him: “What do you think? Could I not appeal to My Father, and He would send twelve legions of angels?” A legion, a Roman military formation, contained six thousand soldiers. Do you think He could not ask His Father to send seventy-two thousand angels? One angel would have been enough to scatter them all—one angel, supposing that the Son had chosen not to act as God.
These things are inconceivable, my dear friends—utterly inconceivable. He certainly had the power, but He did not will to use it. This means that He was not a helpless man; He only appeared to be a helpless man, as though He were helpless. Do you grasp this? Do you understand it? This is extremely important, because it shows precisely that His offering was voluntary and freely willed. And Saint Cyril continues: “Nor was His death due to an involuntary weakness.” His death did not come from a weakness against His will, but from a weakness He willingly accepted. Someone asked me about this a few days ago. Perhaps you do not know it.
Christ is not mortal; in His human nature He is immortal. This may greatly surprise you, but I will explain. Christ assumed the nature of Adam, but He also took Adam’s place—not only his nature, but his place as well. Adam was created neither mortal nor immortal. As Saint Theophilus of Antioch says, depending on his response to the commandment, he would become either mortal or immortal. Thus death would not be the result of God’s creation. God did not create death; it came as the result of human disobedience. But the Son is obedient to the Father.
He lives in immortality. My God, how inconceivable it would be for the incarnate Son of God to be mortal! Do you grasp this? It is inconceivable that the Son of God, who takes the place of the new Adam, should be mortal. It is well known that Christ’s flesh was deified from the very moment of conception, and this is shown both indirectly and directly. I will give you the direct evidence. The Angel says: “The Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, will overshadow you.” For what purpose? What does the Spirit of God do? He brings about the conception and rests upon the One conceived. That is to say...
the one who possesses the Spirit of God is deified. Christ’s flesh, therefore, was deified from the very moment of conception—a deified flesh. It possesses all the marks of complete theosis. We see this at the Transfiguration of Christ. His face, it says, became like the sun. This means that He normally concealed His deified flesh and allowed ordinary flesh to be seen, the flesh of fallen Adam. Thus Christ’s human nature is deified. But this can also be understood in another way. Could God ever assume...
human nature without that human nature receiving the divine uncreated energies of the Godhead? That is inconceivable. Whether we understand it through the presence of the Holy Spirit or through the presence of God the Word, Christ’s body is deified. I have already mentioned the Transfiguration. There it becomes immediately manifest, though God the Word normally conceals it. He allows only the three disciples to see it, and they are overwhelmed. They do not know what to say. The Apostle Peter, it says, did not know what he was saying when he proposed that they make three tents. He was overcome. And what did they see? Only as much as they were able to bear—as much as they were capable of seeing. And so, my dear friends...
could the Son of God possibly die? The Son of God does not die by nature. You may then draw this conclusion: Did He perhaps die on the Cross only in appearance or in seeming? No, not that either. That is heresy. What, then? The Son of God wills to die. He is immortal, yet He wills to die. Listen to how Saint Cyril puts it: “For He was crucified,” and consequently died, “not from weakness, but voluntarily; nor was His death due to an involuntary weakness.” His death, he says, did not come from a weakness against His will.
He willed to die. How did Christ express this? “I have authority to lay down My life, and I have authority to take it up again.” Anyone who lays down his life no longer has the ability to take it back. If I wished to fight for my homeland and were killed at the front, what would I have done? I would have laid down my life for my homeland. Could I take my life back? Certainly not. But listen to Christ’s words: “I have authority to lay down My life, and authority to take it up again”—that is, to rise from the dead. This means that Christ willingly surrendered Himself to death.
He had real flesh, not a body that existed merely in appearance or imagination, and He truly died. He did not die because He was mortal by nature; rather, He willingly submitted to death, so that He might share with humanity the consequence of the Fall—death—and afterward grant humanity the Resurrection. Even the time at which Christ died upon the Cross, my dear friends, was freely chosen. Pay attention. When did Christ die upon the Cross? Christ remained alive upon the Cross for three hours after He was crucified. Here, however, a difficulty arises.
This is not the time to explain it fully. One Evangelist says nine in the morning, while another says twelve noon. This is neither a difficulty nor a contradiction. Pay attention: it is simply a different way of counting the hours. Let me give you a quick example. Regarding the Transfiguration, one Evangelist says six days, while another says eight days. Why? Because one includes the first and last days in the count, while the other counts only the intervening days and not the first and last. Even today we say “eight days.” What day is it today? Monday. We say that next Monday—eight days from now—we will not have a lecture.
I could count it differently, leaving out today because it has already begun and leaving out next Monday because it is the recurrence of today; then I could say six days. Let us count them: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I do not count either Monday, and so there are six days. It is simply a matter of reckoning. But let us not dwell further on this point. I will only tell you that Christ remained upon the Cross for three hours. The number is three: He was crucified at twelve, and at three o’clock He gave up His spirit. When did Christ will to die upon the Cross? Ah, I have already said it: when He willed. See what Christ says upon the Cross: “My Father...”
“Into Your hands I commend My spirit.” He is Lord over the moment when He commends His spirit. Can we say, “I will die now”? Only by killing ourselves—which is not truly mastery over death. But can I remain biologically alive and simply say, “Now I choose to die”? Who has ever accomplished that? No one—or rather, there is someone, whom I will mention shortly. Christ, however, releases His spirit when He Himself judges and wills. What does this mean? It means that He has authority over the moment of His death. These are astonishing things. They show that He does not die by nature simply because He has been crucified. That would be extraordinary. Whatever human beings might wish to do to His human flesh...
if He were to say, “I will not die,” He would not die. He willed it. There are a very few instances of Saints who died when they desired. I will not mention names, but only explain that they might ask for something. Suppose a Saint wishes to die and asks God to take him, but something must first happen, so that he ought not to die for a few hours or perhaps for one more day. He might say, “I will not die now; I will die tomorrow at noon,” and then die at the appointed hour. Of course, this is not the same as the case of Christ—not at all. Let me explain...
Is a human being lord over his own life and death? No, he is not. No human being is lord over his own life and death. But Christ sometimes grants such things to those whom He loves, to one who has lived like a new Abel. These are gifts from Christ Himself. Such a person is informed by the Spirit of God, by the Lord: “You will die at that time.” He replies, “Lord, I beg You, do not let me die then, because I must complete a certain task. Let me die at another time.” And the grace is granted to him: “You will die then, at that later hour.” It is not that a human being governs his own life; rather, the gift is granted to him...
as a sign of Christ’s good pleasure in the life the Saint has lived, allowing him to die in this manner. Do you understand, my dear friends? These are mysterious and astonishing things. What I want you to remember about Jesus Christ is that His flesh was deified. His flesh did not become deified only after the Resurrection—I repeat. After the Resurrection, His human nature received all the qualities Adam would have possessed if he had not sinned. In His human nature, Jesus Christ is immortal and incorruptible. Let us continue.
“You have removed”—forgive me—“I was counted among those who go down into the pit,” says Psalm 87. “I was counted”: I was reckoned among those who descend into the pit.
This is strange. Pay attention: here the pit is Hades. Literally, the pit is the grave, but by extension it means Hades. There is a phrase in the Psalter that says: “They shall go down alive into the pit.”
The pit: they go down alive into Hades. A pit does not contain the living; it contains the dead. Nor would we bury someone alive and leave him to die there. In any case, “pit” means the grave and, by extension, Hades. “I was counted”: I was counted among those who descend into Hades. But can I, an ordinary human being, say this? Could David, who wrote the psalm, say that he was counted among those who descend into Hades, when this is the common lot of all? Permit me to use the word “lot.” You know, one gentleman had a question about the word “chance.” These are merely expressions. Using the word “chance” does not mean that I believe in chance, just as using the word “fate” does not mean that I believe in fate. Such words have simply remained in common expressions.
In this sense, then, the “lot”—and I place the word in quotation marks—is common to all human beings. Since everyone dies, how could I speak as though I were some extraordinary being and say that I became like, or was counted among, those who go down into Hades? Everyone goes down into Hades. Therefore, this passage concerns another person, a unique person. And who is this unique person? It is Jesus Christ, not David. David is an ordinary mortal. This is what the Apostle Peter said in his sermon: “Nor will You permit Your Holy One to see corruption.” We discussed this last time. Yet, the Apostle Peter says, you have seen that David died and saw corruption, and his tomb remains with us to this day...
in Jerusalem. It remains there; it is close by, and I can almost see David’s tomb from here. So of whom was David speaking, asks the Apostle Peter? He was speaking of the One who was to come—that is, the Messiah. This is Christ, who did not see corruption. Thus we see here, my dear friends, that Christ is a unique person who takes the place of humanity, since He truly became man. Saint Cyril then asks: “And what is the identifying sign?” The Greek word means a sign of recognition or, we might say, a watchword—the word used for a military password in the ancient language. What, then, is the watchword, the sign by which He is recognized? It is that He descends into Hades among those who descend into Hades.
“You have removed my acquaintances far from me,” the same psalm continues. You have driven those who knew me away from me. I was left alone. When people die under ordinary circumstances, they die in their beds. I say “under ordinary circumstances” because deaths occur in many different ways. They die in bed; their relatives weep, carry them to the cemetery, gather around them, hold a funeral, and do all that is customary. The dead are surrounded by their loved ones. But here He says: “You have removed my acquaintances far from me.” You have driven them away from me. I was left alone when the hour of my death came. Saint Cyril then explains: “For the disciples fled.”
For the disciples had fled. Christ Himself said it: “And now,” He says, “you will be scattered.” It is written: “You will be scattered; you will all flee and leave Me alone.” You remember these passages from the Gospels that we have been discussing. The same Psalm says: “Will You not work wonders for the dead?” In other words, will You work wondrous things among the dead? Then, a little later: “And I, O Lord...” Saint Cyril does not interpret this passage. Allow me to interpret it for you. He does not explain it because he moves a little further on. As you may have noticed, the text quotes one verse from a Psalm and then says, “then,” or “a little later,” before quoting another verse.
This was a way of identifying the passage, so that his listeners could search and find it there. Can we picture how this worked? How are we to imagine it? Would they perhaps have been holding copies of Holy Scripture? That would be nothing strange. Why do you not bring Holy Scripture with you? You know how the Millennialists conduct themselves. You know how the Millennialists conduct themselves. They never attend their gathering without Holy Scripture in hand. The one teaching them speaks from Scripture and tells them, “Now turn to this book and this chapter,” and so forth, so that they may find the passage they need. My dear friends, I will tell you once again: learn to bring Holy Scripture with you. Now you may say, here... Thank you.
Are we to carry both the New Testament and the Old Testament? There is an edition containing both the New Testament and the Old Testament. Yes, there is. I believe it is published by Zoe. It contains only the text, with no translation or anything else. Yes, I tell you: Isaiah, chapter 52. Quickly, quickly. You see? We have learned only to listen, without studying. Forgive me, but I must tell you plainly. So here it says: “Will You not work wonders for the dead?” Will You work wondrous things among the dead? This question is affirmative; it is really an affirmation. Yes, You will work wonders among the dead.
These are the wonders worked among the dead. When Christ descended into Hades, He did not descend as a prisoner of Hades, but as its conqueror, carrying away its spoils; and the spoils He took were human beings—the souls of men. He took the righteous and placed them where the light of God, the divine uncreated energy, is present: in Paradise. How many passages there are on this theme, showing that Christ despoils Hades and carries away its spoils! Take note of how beautifully John Chrysostom speaks in his Paschal Catechetical Homily, when he says that Hades was embittered, Hades was abolished, Hades was mocked, and Hades was put to death.
These words are very beautiful. They come from Isaiah, and they mean, my dear friends, that Hades is rendered powerless, because Christ descends there and works wonders.
A little later: “And I, O Lord, have cried out to You, and in the morning my prayer shall come before You.” You see how this indicates the appointed time—the hour of the Passion and of the Resurrection. “I cried out,” He says, “and in the morning my prayer came before You”; that is, it reached You. You see how the hour, the appointed time of the Passion and of the Resurrection, is revealed through the mention of the morning: Christ rose in the morning. But our time has also passed, my dear friends. Let us remain with this paragraph as we conclude, for here we can see how Holy Scripture may be understood. Do you grasp the method by which Holy Scripture is interpreted?
Let us therefore make this method our own, so that when we study Holy Scripture, we may acquire new eyes. We used to pass over these things casually and superficially; now let us acquire new eyes. And what are these new eyes? They are the eyes given by the Spirit of God. “The Spirit of God,” says John Chrysostom, “is what gives us other eyes.” When we have the Spirit of God, He gives us these other eyes, so that we may see the Word of God rightly and interpret it rightly. May the Lord bless you.

«Ὅταν τοίνυν καὶ τῶν καιρῶν καὶ τοῦ τόπου τὸ ἰδίωμα, ὅταν...» Συγγνώμη. Εδώ τα πέρατα των ποταμών. Ξέρετε τα πέρατα των ποταμών;
Ότι το βαρύ πυροβολικό του Χριστιανισμού είναι η Ανάσταση του Χριστού;
Μετ’ ολίγα: «Καγώ, Κύριε, προς σε εκέκραξα, και το πρωί η προσευχή μου προφθάσει σε». Βλέπεις πως δηλοί και τον καιρόν της ώρας και του πάθους και της αναστάσεως. Εγώ, λέει, εκέκραξα και το πρωί η προσευχή μου σε έχει προφθάσει. Δηλαδή, έφτασε σε σένα. Βλέπεις πως δηλούται και η ώρα, ο καιρός, διά της ώρας, και του πάθους και της αναστάσεως. Ότι ο Χριστός ανεστήθη το πρωί. Αλλά και η ώρα πέρασε, αγαπητοί. Να μείνουμε σε αυτήν την παράγραφο, με την οποία και κλείνουμε, και που βλέπει κανένας πώς μπορεί να κατανοηθεί η Αγία Γραφή. Αντιλαμβάνεστε τη μέθοδο, πώς ερμηνεύεται η Αγία Γραφή;
