Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the Holy Cross is the Christian’s true protection when it is joined to faith in the crucified God-man, Jesus Christ. Believers should preserve a firm faith when unable to answer objections, while also studying Scripture and doctrine so they can defend Christianity intelligently. Judas, Caiaphas, Pilate, the soldiers, Simon of Cyrene, Golgotha, the empty tomb, the apostles, and Thomas are invoked as witnesses to Christ’s historical Passion and bodily Resurrection.

My dear friends, we are in Catechesis 13, paragraph 36. Last time we were speaking about the seal of the Precious Cross, and how the Precious Cross must be placed everywhere and seal all things. But since we did not finish this paragraph, allow us to say a few more words and complete it. Saint Cyril says that the Precious Cross is a great safeguard, for truly the best protection is the Precious Cross.
Of course, we often resort to various amulets, to things that are supposed to protect us from evil. But the one thing that truly wards off evil, the true safeguard, is the Precious Cross. I appeal to all of you who understand what the word of God is saying: let no one who hears the word of God remain without wearing the Precious Cross. All of you should wear the Precious Cross, whatever it is made of, from wood to gold.
The material is of no importance. What matters is the form of the Precious Cross, provided that we believe in Him who was stretched out upon it—and He is the God-Man, Jesus Christ. Then the Precious Cross truly is a safeguard for us. Otherwise, it is not. As you probably know, magic also makes use of the Precious Cross. But perhaps you will object and say, “Do the demons not flee from it?” Saint Cyril will tell us about this a little further on. Yes, but when a sorcerer uses the Precious Cross, he does not believe in Christ. Worse still, the person who goes to consult the sorcerer has sold Jesus Christ away.
Whatever that person may say about believing in Jesus Christ, it is self-deception. For if he truly believed in Jesus Christ, he would not go to the door of the devil—the door of the sorcerer or the witch. Such people have icons and the Precious Cross, and they make the Sign of the Cross, yet the power of the Precious Cross remains inactive. Even Freemasonry uses the Precious Cross. But do you know how it uses it? As a captive. It places it inside a triangle. The triangle signifies what belongs to Freemasonry—this is not the time to say more—and the Precious Cross is enclosed within that Masonic triangle.
The point of the triangle faces downward. It is an equilateral triangle, with its point facing downward, and the Cross is inside it. This signifies that the Cross is trapped, held captive. In other words, they imagine that Freemasonry—MATS, as we may call it, the Sun God—holds Jesus Christ captive. That is how they understand it. So we cannot say that they too have the Cross. The same applies to the Rosicrucians, who represent the eighteenth degree of initiation in Freemasonry. Their symbol is a beautiful cross adorned with roses, and it even bears the inscription INRI: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”
It has nothing to do with the Cross of Christ, my dear friends. There, the words “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” stand for four corresponding Latin words meaning, “Nature is always reborn.” It has nothing to do with Christ—none whatsoever. These are the great snares the devil sets with sacred symbols in order to deceive Christians. It is free for the poor and requires no effort from the sick. No one can say, “I am poor; I cannot afford a Precious Cross.” Take two little pieces of wood, tie them together, make a cross, and wear it. It is not a matter of expense. And then there is also the act of making the Sign of the Precious Cross.
That is chiefly what we are speaking about: making the Sign of the Cross over our bodies. For the sick, he says, it requires no exertion and no labor. For it is grace from God, a sign of the faithful, and a terror to demons. “For He triumphed over them through it.” Upon the Cross, Christ triumphed over the demons, “making a public spectacle of them,” as the Apostle Paul says in Colossians 2:15. “Making a spectacle of them” means making an example of them: their defeat, the defeat of the demons, was exemplary. “For when they see the Cross, they are reminded of the Crucified One.” When they see the Precious Cross, he says, they remember Him who was crucified.
“They fear Him who crushed the heads of the dragon.” They fear Him who crushed the heads of the dragon, the devil. “Do not despise the seal because it is given freely; rather, for that very reason, honor your Benefactor all the more.” Therefore, do not despise this seal of the Precious Cross merely because it was given to you as a gift.
Instead, honor Him who has bestowed this blessing upon you—Christ our Benefactor, who gave you the Precious Cross. You know, when we do not pay for something, we often fail to value it. We usually look down upon what is free. That is why he says: take care not to despise the Sign of the Cross.
Given as a gift—something freely bestowed. And now we come to paragraph 37.
“If you ever find yourself in a discussion and do not possess the arguments needed for proof, let your faith remain firm within you. Better still, become learned, silencing the Jews from the prophets and the Greeks from the tales of their own mythology. They themselves worship those struck by lightning; but does lightning, coming down from heaven, not”
“strike without discrimination? Are they not ashamed to worship those struck by lightning as hated by the gods, while you are ashamed to worship Him who is beloved of God and is the Son of God, who was crucified for you?” Since we would like to finish Catechesis 13 today, my dear friends, I shall move rather quickly through some points in what I have read to you. He says that you may one day find yourself in a discussion but, for some reason, lack the arguments needed to answer your opponents—here the opponents are the Jews and the Greeks. If you have no proof, the other person may ask you, “Why?” and “How?” You may not be highly educated; you may not know very much; you have not read and simply do not know. Take care, he says: you may not possess the arguments needed for proof, but your faith must remain firm within you. An ordinary person can often simply say, “I do not know how to answer you, but I believe.” That is it. My inability to give an answer, or my not knowing how to answer, does not mean that my own faith should be shaken.
When he says “Greeks,” as I have told you before, he does not mean the Greek people. The word “Greek” was a technical term meaning an idolater, a Gentile, a person from the nations. Thus, at that time, the Gentiles and idolaters were called Greeks. It does not refer to Greeks in the sense that we are Greeks today, whether by nationality, race, and so forth. It refers to the condition of being an idolater. Because the Greeks were idolaters, because the Greek language had spread throughout the whole world, and for many other reasons, idolaters were then called Greeks. So this is not about the Greek people, but about the idolaters.
He now has two groups before him and says: see that you silence the Jews—stop their mouths—with arguments from the prophets. This is what Saint Cyril does throughout all his catecheses, and especially in Catechesis 13, which speaks about the Precious Cross. And silence the idolaters by using the tales of their own mythology, the things they recount and hold as objects of their faith. He says, “Better still, become learned, silencing the Jews from the prophets and the Greeks from the tales of their own mythology.” Become learned. My dear friends, this is a source of deep sorrow—truly, deep sorrow.
We become learned in all kinds of sciences, yet we do not become learned in the content of our own faith. Is that not a shame? Once again, I appeal to your love: become learned in the content of our faith, so that we may be able to answer all those who demand a reason for our faith. In this case, he speaks of the Jews and the idolaters. Why should the Jews be answered from the prophets? Because the Hebrew people believe the prophets and possess their writings. Therefore, we shall use as our argument the prophets who speak of Christ, while we shall answer the Gentiles from the mythological tales
in which they believe. I would like to pause here for a moment.
As I have told you many times lately, paganism is being revived in Greece, and Gnosticism is beginning to appear. I gave two talks on Gnosticism in the advanced catechism class.
A young woman gave me two Gnostic books. One is entitled Gnosticism, and the other is entitled God-Possessed. They are by a French author. As for the book God-Possessed,
you might imagine that it is another edition of The Sayings of the Desert Fathers.
It speaks about the ascetics of the desert. You may say, “What a wonderful book!” This is precisely where the danger lies: Gnosticism has drawn very close to Christianity. That is, it has taken Christian elements. But Gnosticism is made up of many different elements: philosophical and religious elements—including elements from the mystery religions, the religions of nature, and the pagan mysteries—and Christianity as well. A little of everything. And Mani, who is also, we might say...
Mani, who began as the father and chief patron of modern Gnosticism, was a Persian. He blended Parsism—the pagan religion of the Persians—with the Buddhism of the East and the Christianity of the West. In essence, this Manichaean form of Gnosticism prevails today. Of course, as the Gnostics themselves say, many things have developed since then, but the foundation remains the same: a mixture of ideas from East and West. It is also the soul and metaphysical foundation of Theosophy,
of Freemasonry, and even of Spiritualism in the religious sphere, for Spiritualism also has its own religious rite—perhaps you did not know that. Even magic, in its rituals, is essentially founded upon Gnosticism.
When you consider how widespread all these things are in the world, you understand how important it is for us to know what Gnosticism is. This is why Gnosticism is beginning to revive in our own time,
even in a form set apart from everything I have just mentioned. As you know, we have a Gnostic center here in Larissa. We have spoken time and again about these people. Take care!
The modern form of Gnosticism is founded upon biological, philosophical, and psychological ideas. It tells you that you will gain vigor, health, and happiness. It regards evil as a flaw within creation, rather than, as Christianity teaches, a transgression and guilt before God the Creator. It also understands redemption as self-redemption, summed up in the saying, “Know yourself.” What I am telling you now comes from a book I recently read entitled Trends in Modern Gnosticism. Its message is self-redemption: “Know yourself.” You have seen how the Gnostic center here in Larissa speaks repeatedly of this “Know yourself.”
If I come to know myself, they say, then I redeem myself. Yet we know that I cannot redeem myself. Redemption must come from outside me. And redemption is not merely moral; it is ontological. It is redemption from death, and it is Christ who brings it. He not only redeems me from sin and evil, but also delivers me from death, because there will be a resurrection of the dead. Please, pay very close attention—very close attention. Once we raised the alarm about millenarianism, and no one took any notice. People said, “Oh, what are the millenarians? What are they?” And now the millenarians are close to overwhelming us. I appeal to you and cry out—remember my words: Gnosticism is a great danger. The Fathers of our Church fought it even more intensely than they fought Arianism.
Gnosticism has never died. It is always smoldering beneath the surface, even, if you will, within this very Church of Christ. Take great care. The Apostle Paul combats Gnosticism, and John the Evangelist combats Gnosticism. Let me remind you of the Apostle Paul’s warning that a time would come when people would forbid Holy Matrimony and say, “Do not touch; do not taste.” These were devices of the Gnostics. Do you remember these words in the Apostle Paul? They are in his epistle to Timothy. In Colossians, too, he speaks about the aeons and the fullness. These are Gnostic terms. Yet the Apostle Paul answers them by declaring that Christ is the fullness of the aeons, the fullness of all things. And he also says to Timothy:
“Avoid endless genealogies.” This is Gnostic: the endless genealogy, and so forth. Do you see? Be careful. Gnosticism is reviving, and it will take believers and Christians—even people from our own churches—captive and drag them into Freemasonry, Theosophy, Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Spiritualism, and who knows where else. Therefore, Saint Cyril says, become learned, so that you may silence the pagans by using the very myths they tell. For Gnosticism truly is a mythology. And what do I mean by mythology? A human invention. They devise these things in their own minds and then proclaim them.
It all comes from their own minds. There is no revelation. We, by contrast, say that this or that is revealed in Holy Scripture. How do we know? Christ rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. How do we know? The Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost. We have events that confirm revelation. What does Gnosticism have? It is a human conception, a human invention. It is not revelation. Therefore, since it is not revelation, all of it is mythology. Saint Cyril says, “I am ashamed to speak of their so-called gods, and I shall leave the matter aside for now. Let those who know speak of them.” He is ashamed to tell us about the gods in whom the pagans believe, so he leaves them aside for the present. Let those who know tell you about them.
“Let those who know speak of them.” Do you see? “I am ashamed,” he says. My beloved, what can I tell you? In this book about Gnosticism, we found some horrifying things. How dreadful! Dreadful! There is even a branch, we might say, because Gnosticism has many variations. Each supposed leader—Basilides, Marcion, Mani, and so forth—has his own inventions. Some even went so far as to consume human seed. The Ophites worshiped the serpent, just as some in America today keep a serpent and worship it. These things are not new; they are ancient.
The Ophites were Gnostics, and so forth. Dreadful things—dreadful, truly dreadful things. This is why Saint Cyril says, “I am ashamed to tell you about them. I will not tell you now. Let those who know speak of them.”
He continues: “Let all the heretics also be silenced.” Here again he has in mind the Docetists, who were themselves part of the Gnostic movement. What did they teach? Listen to how Saint Cyril puts it: “If anyone says that the Cross was only an appearance, turn away from him.” If anyone says that the Cross was a mere semblance or illusion—that the Son of God did not truly become man and was not truly crucified, but only seemed to be—turn away from him. “Hate those who say that He was crucified only in appearance.” Hate those who say that the Son of God was crucified only in appearance. And he explains: “For if He was crucified only in appearance, then salvation is also an appearance.” If He was crucified only in appearance, and salvation comes through the Cross, then salvation itself is an illusion. Therefore, we have no salvation. “If the Cross is an illusion, the Resurrection is also an illusion.”
If they merely thought they saw it happen, though it was not real, then Christ’s Resurrection is also imaginary. “And if Christ has not been raised, we are still in our sins.” If Christ did not rise, then we remain in our sins. We have no salvation. “If the Cross is an illusion, the Ascension is also an illusion.” If the Cross is imaginary, then Christ’s Ascension is imaginary as well. “And if the Ascension is an illusion, then the Second Coming is also an illusion, and everything that follows has no reality.” Then, he says, Christ’s Second Coming is also imaginary, and everything is emptied of reality. Everything collapses. There is no salvation. That is the end: no Second Coming, no purpose to Christianity—nothing at all. Everything collapses. When does this happen? When the Cross is treated as mere appearance, when the One who was crucified is said not to have been truly crucified, but only to have seemed so. Do you understand what the Church has had to confront throughout all the centuries, and what she still confronts today?
“Take the Cross first as your unshakable foundation, and upon it build everything else that belongs to the faith.” How beautiful! What a concise statement! First take the Cross as your unbroken and unshakable foundation. Then, upon this foundation of the Cross—that is, upon Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross, upon the truth that the God-Man Jesus was crucified after truly taking human nature—build all the other doctrines of the faith. The Cross is the unshakable foundation. Now you see why Saint Cyril insists so strongly upon the Holy Cross. “Do not deny the Crucified One.” And here, my beloved, we shall move very quickly, because he has many examples
to show us why we must not deny the Crucified One. “For if you deny Him, you have many who will bear witness against you.” If you deny the Crucified One, many will rise to refute you. What does Saint Cyril do now? In a beautiful series of references, he takes historical details recorded in the Gospels, personifies them, and brings them before you who deny the Holy Cross and Christ’s Crucifixion, so that they may testify against you. Listen, then. He presents a great many such witnesses. “Judas will be the first to testify against you.”
The traitor.
The first to testify against you will be Judas the traitor. Allow me to add one more point. Here we have history itself bearing witness, history connected with the Holy Land and with the events that took place there. Here is the history of Judas. Saint Cyril says that Judas the traitor will be the very first to testify against you. “For the betrayer saw that He was condemned to death by the chief priests and elders.” Judas knew that the Teacher had been condemned to death by the chief priests and elders. Therefore, He truly was condemned and crucified. The thirty pieces of silver bear witness.
The thirty pieces of silver received by Judas are witnesses. Gethsemane bears witness. The very place, Gethsemane, is a witness: “where the betrayal took place.” “I do not yet mention the Mount of Olives, where He prayed that night while His fellow disciples were present.” I will not even mention the Mount of Olives, where the Lord prayed that night with His disciples present. “The moon that shone that night bears witness.” The moon is a witness. “The day bears witness, and the sun that was darkened.” The sun is a witness because it was darkened from noon until three in the afternoon. For three hours, darkness covered the earth. Here, let me make a brief digression.
You may ask, how can the moon and the sun be witnesses? There is something exceedingly beautiful in the way the Book of Isaiah begins. Listen: “Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord has spoken.” Listen, O heaven, and pay close attention, O earth, because the Lord has spoken. And further on He says, “I have raised sons and daughters, but they did not listen to Me.” They were Israel. The ox knows its master, He says, and the donkey knows its manger, but My people did not recognize Me.
God calls upon heaven and earth—lifeless things—as witnesses. He even calls upon these animals as witnesses, so that on the day of judgment these lifeless or irrational creatures will stand and say, “God truly spoke, but Israel did not listen.” This is why Saint Cyril now says—and you understand it very well—the moon is a witness, and the sun is also a witness. On that day their testimony will come forth, and they will speak. What will the sun say? Here the sun is personified.
The sun disappeared—that is, it was darkened without having set. I am translating and reading the text so that we may finish. The fire by which Peter warmed himself bears witness against you. If you deny the Cross, then eternal fire awaits you. “I speak harsh words to you, so that you may not suffer harshly.” Remember the swords that came against the Lord in the garden of Gethsemane, so that the eternal sword may not fall upon you, and you may not experience it. The house of Caiaphas will also bear witness against you “through its present desolation,”
“showing the power of Him who was judged there at that time.” I was deeply struck by this phrase of Saint Cyril. The house of Caiaphas and the Praetorium, now deserted—apparently already in ruins in Saint Cyril’s time—will bear witness against you, revealing the power of Him who was judged and condemned there. Consider, my dear friends, what John Chrysostom says: “Where are the Neros? Where are the Diocletians? Where are the frying pans? Where are the racks?”—that is, all those instruments of torture. “All have fallen silent. But where is the Church? She shines more brightly than the sun.” And so I ask:
They have fallen silent; everything has fallen silent. How awe-inspiring! Thus one sees the house of Caiaphas and the Praetorium standing deserted. I mentioned the Praetorium earlier—forgive me, that was a mistake. The Praetorium belonged to Pilate. Where is Caiaphas? Where is Annas? Where is Pilate?
Not one of them remains. But the Church remains. Foolish are those who set themselves against the Church. They truly are foolish, because by doing so they bring, as it were, the wrath of God upon themselves. “On the day of judgment, Caiaphas himself will stand in your place.” In other words, he will come forward and confess the truth in your stead.
Caiaphas will do so on the day of the great judgment. The servant who struck Jesus will also come forward. What will Caiaphas say? “I judged Him.” What will the servant say? “I struck Him.” And yet you claim that Christ did not exist? That He is a mythical figure, as some of our contemporaries write and say today? “Jesus is a mythical figure,” they say. Indeed, a number of so-called enlighteners gather people into groups, enter schools, and say, “Christ is a mythical figure.” You who say such things are the myth and the fairy tale—not Christ. This is why Caiaphas and the servant who struck Him will bear witness against you.
And so on. “Those who bound Him and led Him away” will also bear witness. Herod and Pilate will likewise confess the truth in your stead and say: “Why do you deny the One whom the Jews accused before us, though we knew that He had done nothing wrong?” Neither Herod nor Pilate found any sin in Jesus. Neither found any fault in Him. “That is why I, Pilate, washed my hands at that time.” They too will confess the truth in your stead.
The false witnesses will testify, as will the soldiers and those who placed the purple robe and the crown of thorns upon the Lord’s head, crucified Him on Golgotha, and cast lots for His tunic. Simon of Cyrene, who carried the Cross behind the Lord, will also bear witness against you. Among the heavenly bodies, the sun that was darkened will bear witness; from the earth, the wine mixed with myrrh; from the reeds, the reed itself; from the plants, the hyssop that they placed upon the reed and used to give the Lord drink; and from the sea, the sponge.
Among the trees, the wood of the Cross will bear witness. So too will the soldiers already mentioned, who nailed the Lord to the Cross and cast lots for His garments; the soldier who pierced the Lord’s side with a spear; the women who were present; the veil of the Temple that was torn in two; and Pilate’s Praetorium, which now lies desolate through the power of the One crucified there. Holy Golgotha itself, rising above us and visible to this day, still bears witness, as do the rocks that were split apart
when Christ breathed His last upon the Cross. So does this tomb nearby, along with the angels who were present, the women who venerated Christ in His Resurrection, and Peter and John, who hastened and ran to the tomb to see what had become of Jesus. Thomas will also bear witness against you, for he placed his hand into the Teacher’s side and his fingers into the marks of the nails.
“For our sake he examined Him carefully by touch. What you, who were not present then, would later have wished to investigate, he who was present investigated according to divine providence.” Pay attention to this beautiful passage. You were not present then, but Thomas was. You might therefore have had doubts. And so, according to divine providence, Thomas touched the risen Lord. He examined Him by touch so that you, who were not there, might be assured. For the Lord said to the disciples, “Come and touch Me.” The following week, eight days later, He said to Thomas, “Come and touch Me.” But the other disciples had already touched Him on the day of Pascha, when Thomas was absent.
Luke writes:
“While they still disbelieved for joy”—the Lord was standing before them, yet they thought they were seeing a spirit. They could not grasp that this could truly be their Teacher. He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” and sat down to eat.
They brought Him a piece of broiled fish and some honey, and He ate before them all. He told them, “A spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.” In this way the Lord gave them complete assurance that He was truly Himself, not a spirit, and that His appearance was not merely imaginary, as the Docetists claimed.
Remember also when the Lord walked upon the sea and the disciples cried out in fear because they thought they were seeing a spirit. But when the Lord came into the boat, they were assured that He was not a spirit. He even held Peter up so that he would not sink. All these things, Saint Cyril says, will bear witness against you. You have the twelve Apostles as witnesses to the Cross. You have the twelve Apostles, to whom Christ said, “Go and make disciples,” and, “You shall be My witnesses.” And we know that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ stands at the very heart of the Apostles’ preaching—to the whole inhabited earth, forgive me, to the whole world.
“See the whole world of mankind believing in the Crucified One. Let this very fact assure you of the power of Him who was crucified.” This, he says, should convince you of the power of the Crucified One: the whole world received the proclamation of Christ’s Resurrection. My dear friends, if you truly sit down and consider what Christianity is, it will blow your mind—if you will permit me to speak that way. What do I mean? What does it mean to say, “He is risen”? You know that the Athenians did not accept the Apostle Paul’s preaching. Had they accepted it, it would have overturned their whole way of thinking. Nevertheless, in the end Greece became Christian, as did the whole world.
If it were not true that Christ is risen, there would have been no power of the risen Lord at work. It was the power of the risen Lord that brought the world to faith. The Holy Spirit bore witness to the risen Christ. My dear friends, by ordinary human means it would have been impossible for the world to believe in Christ’s Resurrection. Such a proclamation seems impossible to accept. And yet the Spirit of God illumines the world to receive the proclamation of Christ’s Resurrection. From this we see that He who was crucified and rose again is true.
For who—excuse me—who has gathered you together now?
My dear friends, who gathered you here? The expression is not mine; it comes from Saint Cyril. “What soldiers? What chains compelled you to gather? What sentence forced you here?” What soldiers brought you here? What bonds dragged you and compelled you to come? “No; it was the saving trophy of Jesus, the Cross, that gathered everyone together.” This Cross gathered us here, both me and you. It is ten o’clock. Should you not be at home, sleeping and resting after the weariness of your work? Who gathered us here? You have been sitting in your chairs for two hours, perhaps even longer if we include what came before. Who gathered you here? The Cross of Christ. It is the Cross that gathered us. You see its power; you experience it yourselves.
Here, then, we have personal experience. Thus we can say, “Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ.” We have seen Christ’s Resurrection because we have the Spirit of God and behold the power of Christ. Therefore, He who was crucified is true, because He rose again; and the assurance of the Resurrection is given to us by the Holy Spirit. “The Cross brought the Persians into obedience and tamed the Scythians; and to the Egyptians, in place of cats and dogs and their many-sided delusion, it granted the knowledge of God.” The precious Cross instructed the Persians and brought them into obedience, tamed the Scythians, and delivered the Egyptians from their many forms of delusion and from worshipping
cats and dogs. “To this day it heals diseases; to this day it drives out demons; it overthrows the sorceries of magicians and enchanters.” This is worth emphasizing. The precious Cross, my dear friends! You make the Sign of the Cross over someone, and all these things flee. You make the Sign of the Cross over someone, and the demons depart.
And more! It overturns the sorceries of those who use potions—that is, sorcerers—and of enchanters. They too are magicians, a kind of sorcerer. This is well known.
This is what I told you earlier: even sorcerers use the Precious Cross, but they hold it captive within their magic. I explained why. You may ask, “Why does God allow this?” He permits it as punishment both for the sorcerers and for those who go knocking at their doors. Listen: as a punishment, the Precious Cross does not act, and the demon is allowed to keep you in its grip. Why? Because you did not put your faith in the Precious Cross, but went to that door instead. Do you hear this, you who go—and insist on going—to such doors whenever a proposed marriage falls through, business is not going well, or illness strikes? You excuse yourselves by saying, “What could I do? Necessity drove me to save my child, my husband, or my wife from an illness or from whatever else.” The devil will wrap himself around you if you do not turn away—the devil himself.
There you see the Precious Cross remaining inactive as a punishment. But consider something else. Suppose you go to a certain sorcerer, Christos Gazoros. Someone once went to him wearing a Precious Cross around his neck, as many people do. This Christos Gazoros keeps icons all around him, and people even call him “Christ”—they say they are going “to Christ.” I have heard this from many people. They have even changed the name “Gazoros” into “the Nazarene.” Are you not deceivers, then? Icons all around him! And when this man entered, Christos was advising people to have Holy Unction, blessings of water, Divine Liturgies, and Paraklesis services performed in the Church.
The man entered wearing the Cross. It was hidden from sight, but the sorcerer could see it—he saw it through the eyes of the demon—and said to him, “Take off the Cross you are wearing around your neck.”
Apparently, the man who went there had faith in the Precious Cross. How he ended up there, I do not know. But everything else the sorcerer had around him remained powerless. You need not look far, my beloved. Do not the fire-walkers carry icons while treading on burning coals? The phenomenon is demonic. How, then, can they carry icons?
In essence, he casts out the bait that it is an icon of Saint Constantine—yes, indeed. You know the image: Saint Constantine above, Saint Helen, and the Precious Cross in the middle. Yet the Precious Cross does not act, because the phenomenon is demonic. It is what I explained to you about the boundary that has been set. So you have now seen that the demons can accomplish nothing here. Go, if you please, to a spiritualist séance—to a gathering where they are about to produce a spiritualist phenomenon—wearing the Precious Cross, and see whether they accomplish anything. They will accomplish absolutely nothing. Indeed, even to this day we see that the Precious Cross—its powers, the divine energy of the Precious Cross—overturns all these devices of the devil. And now the final paragraph, paragraph forty-one: “Do not marvel; this shall appear again from heaven together with Jesus, for the trophy shall go before the King.”
“And to God the Father who sent Him, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.” Moreover, on that great day of Christ’s Second Coming, the Precious Cross will go before Him. It will precede the coming of the Lord. This Precious Cross will appear in heaven as His herald!
It will reveal the identity of the One who is coming: the One who comes is the very One who was crucified. That is why the Precious Cross will go before Him. And the Jews who crucified Him—as do all those who sin or deny the Precious Cross—will mourn. They will see, they will mourn, and they will beat their heads and their breasts, but by then it will be too late for them. But we who have believed in the Precious Cross will glory in it; we will glory and bow down in worship, because we believed in our Lord Jesus Christ, whom God the Father sent.
He came with the Holy Spirit, so that we might glorify the one God, the Holy Trinity. Our Lord Jesus Christ came to save us, and the whole Holy Trinity has accomplished the work of our salvation. Here, my beloved, Saint Cyril’s thirteenth Catechesis, concerning Him who was crucified and buried, comes to an end. You have seen how many arguments Saint Cyril gives us. Next comes the fourteenth Catechesis, which concerns the Resurrection. If we are alive, if God wills, and if we return here around the end of September, God willing, we shall continue with the Catecheses that follow, including that most important Catechesis which concerns
the Resurrection of Christ. What remains for us now is this: through his Catechesis, Saint Cyril helps us understand and learn what our godparent ought to have done for us after making a promise at the baptismal font, at our Baptism, while reciting the Symbol of Faith—the Creed: the promise to teach it to us. This does not mean merely teaching us to recite it, for we have come to limit knowledge of the Creed—if even that much is done—to memorizing the words: “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty.” Saint Cyril comes to explain the Symbol of Faith to us, because, in essence, his Catecheses are nothing other than an exposition of
the Symbol of Faith. We need to be catechized—not catechized again, but catechized for the first time—because we received no catechesis from our families, from our sponsors or godparents, or perhaps even from catechism school itself. For often, if you wish—I do not know how things are now—
I too was a catechist for many years, but I do not know; perhaps we need to reconsider what should be taught in catechism school. We should not teach peripheral matters, but matters that concern the very content of the faith. At some point we must understand this, and catechesis must take
such a form that we may have living Christians, truly formed in Christ Jesus and strengthened in the Mysteries of the Church, so that they can truly stand firm. Then we shall be able to say that our Church is once again producing Saints and Martyrs. A people cannot survive if its young are not educated. Let just one generation go without education; let just one generation fail to attend school. Within thirty to fifty years, that people will automatically fall into barbarism. Inevitably. Why? Because education and formation have ceased. Do you not think, then, that we are living through a kind of barbarism within the Church herself? And this is precisely because
we are ignorant, because we have not received the instruction of the Lord. For this reason, my beloved, I would like to commend you. This is not empty rhetoric. I say it every year, but you yourselves give me the right to say it and to commend you each year. So many of you are here for our final talk today; every seat is filled. You have listened for so many hours. You are tired, and it is late at night, yet you continue listening because you desire to be formed in the Gospel of Christ. If we possess this kind of formation, then surely we shall be able to stand firm and continue to exist both as the Orthodox Church and as the Greek nation. If our people are formed in this way,
then we may hope that the Church will endure, for “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her.” And we shall also survive as a people, because we shall have people who understand how they ought to live. With all my heart, I wish you a good summer, and I hope we meet again in September—God willing.

Έχουν πέσει στη σιγή, όλα έχουν πέσει στη σιγή, σεσίγηνται. Φοβερό. Έτσι βλέπει κανείς το σπίτι του Καϊάφα, το Πρετόριον, έρημο. Πού είναι ο Καϊάφας; Είπα το Πρετόριο πριν, συγγνώμη, έκανα λάθος. Το Πρετόριο ήταν του Πιλάτου. Πού είναι ο Καϊάφας, πού είναι ο Άννας, πού είναι ο Πιλάτος;
Γιατί αυτός που πήγε εκεί φαίνεται είχε πίστη στον Τίμιο Σταυρό. Πώς κατέληξε, δεν ξέρω. Αλλά όλα τα άλλα που είχε γύρω έμεναν ανενέργητα. Μην πάτε μακριά, αγαπητοί. Δεν κρατούν εικόνες οι αναστενάρηδες, όταν πατούν αναμμένα κάρβουνα; Το φαινόμενο είναι δαιμονικό. Πώς κρατούν εικόνες;
