Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem connects Christ’s crucifixion and rock-hewn burial with Old Testament prophecy, showing that the Gospel accounts confirm Jesus Christ’s identity. Believers receive the fruit of the Tree of Life in the Eucharist—the body and blood of Christ—which grants eternal life. The Orthodox manner of making the Cross expresses faith in the Holy Trinity, Christ’s divine and human natures, and the ascetic life of being crucified with Christ.

My beloved, we are still in the thirteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, paragraph 37—lambda zeta.
Forgive me: lambda epsilon, 35. Saint Cyril gives this catechesis the general title, “Crucified and Buried.” He writes: “We seek to know clearly where He was buried. Was the tomb made by human hands?”
“Did it rise above the ground like the tombs of kings? Was the sepulchre built of stones fitted together? And what was placed upon it? Tell us, O prophet, the precise details of the tomb. Where was He laid, and where are we to seek Him?” You know from our previous talks, in which we have been examining Saint Cyril’s text, that Saint Cyril calls upon the prophets to show who it was that was crucified and buried.
It is God incarnate; and the prophets, through their prophecies, confirm and establish the identity of Jesus Christ. This is extremely important. Whenever we speak about matters of faith, we must establish them securely, so that the faithful may possess the proof within themselves—not from some external source, but inwardly, from Holy Scripture itself. Then they will be believers with full conviction, and their faith will not waver but will stand firm. Following his usual method, Saint Cyril now takes particular details from the Crucifixion and burial of Christ and asks the prophets: “Tell us, O prophet.
“You foretold the very things that we now find recorded as historical events in the Gospels.” And here he says: “We seek to learn clearly where He was buried. Was the tomb made by human hands, or was it a natural cave?” For, as is well known, Palestine had what were called natural caves, including many small—very small—caverns in which the Jews laid their dead. But there were also artificial caves, hewn out of rock and made into tombs, usually family tombs.
That is why he asks: “Was the tomb made by human hands? Was it perhaps like those royal tombs that rise high above the surface of the earth and are built of magnificent stones? Was the sepulchre made of stones fitted together?” We might think of mausoleums, those costly tombs, or even the pyramids of Egypt, those most magnificent monuments. Was it perhaps something like that?
And what was placed upon it after He had been laid in the tomb? What was put there—a stone? Was a pyramid built over it? For it is well known that in Egypt the royal tomb lies beneath the ground and the pyramid is then built above it. “Tell us where we are to seek Him,” he says. “O prophets, tell us precisely how these things are.” And they do tell us. First, the Prophet Isaiah says in Isaiah 51:1: “Look to the solid rock which you hewed.” Notice that he says, “Look intently.” He does not merely say, “Look,” but, “Look intently.”
This means: “Pay close attention to the solid stone, the rock, which you yourselves hewed.” This shows that the tomb would be made by human hands, not a natural cave. Nor would it be a magnificent structure made of stones fitted together, one stone laid upon another. It would be hewn from rock. “Look intently and see,” Saint Cyril now says; “you have it in the Gospels.” And there it is: we turn to the Gospels, that is, to the historical account. “In a tomb hewn out of rock,” says the Evangelist Luke in Luke 23:53.
And Mark then says, in Mark 15:46, “in a tomb hewn out of rock.” What does Isaiah say? “Look,” he says, “to the solid rock which you hewed.” And what do the Evangelists record as history? That He was laid in a tomb cut and hewn out of rock. And then what happens? “What kind of door did the sepulchre have?” Saint Cyril now asks. Again, another prophet speaks. And who is this prophet? Jeremiah, in Lamentations 3:53. What does he say? “They put my life to death in a pit, and...
“they placed a stone over me.” They put my life to death in a pit—that is, they placed me in a tomb—and there they set a stone over me. The chosen and precious Cornerstone, as Isaiah again says and as the Apostle Peter also says, “lay for a short time behind another stone: a stone of stumbling to the Jews, but salvation to those who believe.” I, the stone who am a stumbling block and an offence to the Jews, yet bring salvation to those who believe—I, that very stone, lay behind the stone they had placed at the sepulchre. One of Christ’s names is “the Stone.”
He is the Cornerstone, “the stone which the builders rejected,” and so forth. And now this Stone, Christ, lies behind another stone: the slab, the great stone they rolled into place before the tomb. You see the prophecy, and you see its fulfilment in history.
“The Tree of Life was planted in the earth, so that the earth which had been cursed might receive the blessing, and so that the dead might be set free.” Let us pause here for a brief explanation. This expression of Saint Cyril’s is truly beautiful. He says that the Tree of Life came and was planted upon the earth. Here “tree” means a living tree, not merely a piece of wood. This happened so that our earth, which had received a curse, might be blessed and partake of the blessing, and thus the dead might be loosed—that is, set free. What does this mean? Let us turn to the Old Testament, to its first book. What happens in the opening chapters of Genesis? We are told that God planted Paradise and, among its other trees, planted two trees in the midst of Paradise. One was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and the other was the Tree of Life. What was the Tree of Life? If our first ancestors had eaten from it, they would have lived forever. Naturally, that tree did not contain some seed of life within itself. Neither did the tree of the knowledge of good and evil contain a seed of death that would bring death once its fruit was tasted. Certainly there was no seed of death in it.
They were two simple, ordinary trees, like all the trees of Paradise—entirely natural trees. Where, then, were death and life to be found? In obedience or disobedience. That is where death or life lay. Had Adam listened and obeyed, he would have eaten from the Tree of Life—that is, he would have remained immortal. Had he disobeyed, death would have followed. There, then, were both life and death. Where? In obedience. Where? In the human power of free choice. Man himself would ultimately choose what he would do to himself. But when our first ancestors ate, they fell, and death entered. Adam was exiled from Paradise. And God stationed the Cherubim there to guard the way to life, as we said on a previous occasion, with the flaming sword turning every way, so that Adam could not enter and eat from the Tree of Life. Scripture says clearly that Adam was not to enter, stretch out his hand, eat from it, and thus become immortal—so that, as the Fathers say, evil itself would not become immortal. Here we see God’s great love for mankind. But this road was opened, as we have said, through the incarnation of the Son of God. Do you remember? It does no harm to say it again. Materiality, death, and sin were overcome. Materiality was overcome because man is material—for man is not merely the soul.
The whole human being is body and soul. Man now has a place in the Kingdom of God. Materiality was overcome through the incarnation; death was overcome through Christ’s death and His Resurrection—forgive me, through His Resurrection—and sin was overcome through Christ’s death upon the Cross. Man has now been brought into the Kingdom of God. He can dwell in the Kingdom of God. The road has been opened; and since the road has been opened, we may now taste the fruit of the Tree of Life. But where are we to find it? This Tree has been planted in the earth. But what about Paradise? Do not search for the old Paradise or for that particular tree. It was an ordinary tree. As we said, life came through obedience to the commandment,
not through the tree’s own nature. But now the Tree of Life has been planted upon the earth, and this Tree of Life is Jesus Christ. The Tree of Life, he says, was planted. What does “planted” mean? The Son of God became incarnate upon the earth. And now I can eat the fruit of life. What is that fruit? His body and His blood. This is precisely why the Lord says, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life.” This is how we taste of the Tree of Life. And if you will, our first ancestors were then commanded not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, under penalty of death. Now mankind receives the command...
to eat from the Tree of Life. If people do not eat from it, their penalty will be death.
That is to say—if I partake, I have life. If I do not partake of this fruit, the body and blood of Christ, I have death. For the meaning is clear when the Lord says, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life.” It follows that whoever does not eat His flesh and drink His blood does not have eternal life. Do you see, then, what this means? At that time the earth received a curse. God said to Adam, “Cursed is the earth in your works.” Let us explain this briefly. He did not simply say, “Cursed is the earth.”
He said, “Cursed is the earth in your works.” In other words, when you work the earth, your labour will not prosper. The earth itself is not cursed. God does not curse His creation. Where does the evil lie? In man’s free choice. Where does the curse lie? In his works—not in matter itself. No, God does not curse the earth. It is the work of His hands, and God said that everything was very good. What, then, does He curse? He curses the earth as it is handled by man. The curse lies in man’s use of it. And now, Saint Cyril says, the Tree of Life is planted here so that the earth may receive the blessing.
What blessing? That what man now does may no longer remain cursed in his works, but may be blessed. And this also happens so that the dead may be set free. They had received the penalty of death, but now the sentence of death has come to an end. The dead are set free: there will be a resurrection of the dead. Adam and Eve will rise. Let me make a brief observation in passing. When can we understand the New Testament? When can we understand Jesus Christ? Only when we have the Old Testament before us, and more particularly...
the first three chapters of Genesis—the very chapters that are attacked today. I would like to say this, with love, to many people, and especially to our beloved and respected theologians: we do not know what others may be doing elsewhere. We do not know by what standards they remove the Old Testament. But I appeal to you and ask: can the person of Jesus Christ possibly be understood without the Old Testament? Can I know the identity of Jesus Christ without the prophets? “Who do men say that I am?” A Forerunner was needed to point out who Jesus Christ is. No one could have known. How, then, can we know?
“Some say You are the Prophet Jeremiah; others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets.” They did not know Him. “How do you know, then, when you tell Me that I am the Son of God?” God reveals it to you through the prophets, because you understand the prophets. When the Lord meets Philip, and Philip then meets Nathanael, what does Philip say to Nathanael? “We have found Him of whom Moses and the prophets wrote.” What had they been doing? They had been studying the prophets. And so, through the prophets and by the illumination of the Holy Spirit, they understood who He was—the true identity of Jesus Christ. Those outside understood nothing.
So, my beloved, if we remove the Old Testament, what will we understand about Jesus Christ? We shall fall into the same condition, needing another Forerunner to tell us that this is Jesus. But there is only one Forerunner. He came, and his work was completed. How, then, shall we understand the person of Jesus Christ? And this brings me to the Book of Genesis, however much it is attacked and dismissed as mythology. They call the account of creation mythology, especially the creation of man, even though the whole of Christian anthropology is found there! Christian anthropology springs from there and is then understood in Christ Jesus, because He is the New Adam. The Apostle Paul has already called Christ the New Adam. How can I understand the New Adam if I do not know the old Adam?
And how can I speak of the New Adam if I condemn the old Adam as a mythical figure? If the old Adam is a mythical figure, then we could very easily say that the New Adam is also a mythical figure. Does that surprise you? It is being said in our own day. Certain professors—not all of them theologians—go into schools claiming to enlighten the students and say, “Adam and Christ are mythical figures.” They say it very easily. First we called the old Adam a mythical figure. What now prevents us from calling the New Adam, Jesus Christ, a mythical figure as well? See the results!
These are the consequences of rejecting the Old Testament. I cannot imagine how educated people, trained theologians who have spent year after year at universities and in university lecture halls, can fail to recognize the value of the Old Testament. I cannot understand it. Then what can it be? There must be something else behind it. What might that be? Well, let us continue. Paragraph 36: “Let us not, therefore, be ashamed to confess the Crucified One.” Let us not be ashamed to confess the
Crucified One, since He is the Tree of Life planted in the midst of the earth. In the midst of the earth. Shall I say something about the midst of the earth, where the Tree of Life was planted? The old tree was planted in the midst of Paradise; the new Tree was planted in the midst of the earth. Can you show me where the middle of a sphere is on its surface? You will tell me that every point on a sphere may be regarded as the middle and may serve as a starting point. Wherever I begin to draw a great circle, it will close. Whether I draw it this way or that way, however I turn it, I shall always complete a circumference equal to another—and infinitely many such circumferences.
From that single point, infinitely many circumferences can be drawn, all equal to one another. Infinitely many circumferences from one point on a sphere. That point—whichever point it may be—is the center of the sphere. My beloved, when the Church of Christ spread throughout the whole earth, wherever the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is celebrated, there too is the center of the earth. For beside my home there is a parish church, and there I shall find the Tree of Life—that is, the body and blood of Christ. The Tree of Life is planted everywhere. This is what it means to be in the midst of Paradise. To reach
the center, the middle, as we were saying, is always possible wherever you may be. It is the shortest road. Wherever you are, even at the farthest edge, you do not need to travel from one end to the other. To put it simply, this means that you can easily find the body and blood of Christ. Easily. The Mystery is continually celebrated. Listen to Paul.
For thousands of years Paul has not been proved false, nor has Christ, who said, “The gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” The Mystery will be celebrated until Christ comes again—until He comes. The Mystery will always be celebrated, always. Do you see the truth? Do you see the...
Thank you. These things are confirmed precisely by history. Therefore, let us not be ashamed to confess the Crucified One. We must confess Him. How is this confession made? In various ways. Here, in a most beautiful passage, Saint Cyril tells us that one way of confessing
the crucified Christ is by making the sign of the Cross. That is one way, and it is very important. If persecutors should one day ask us somewhere, “Are you a Christian?” and I make the sign of the Cross, that says everything: I am a Christian.
Ask me nothing more. I am a Christian. The sign of the Cross is a great thing. Indeed, the sign of the Cross is a true confession. The proof that we are unwilling to confess Christ is that we fail to make the sign of the Cross when we ought to. We are ashamed to cross ourselves at a meal to which friends have invited us, or at a more public banquet. Perhaps we are invited to a reception at some club, and we are ashamed to make the sign of the Cross because no one else is crossing themselves. Or it may be a meal with friends or relatives. Even in our own home, where we normally cross ourselves at the table, when friends
or relatives come as guests, we again neither pray nor make the sign of the Cross, because we are ashamed before our visitors. Do you not think that goes too far? We walk along the street, where we are accustomed to cross ourselves as we pass a church. Do you know why we make the sign of the Cross before a church? It is an act of honor toward the Crucified One who is present within the church. Let me say something more. It is honor and greeting; it is a confession that we identify ourselves with what is there and accept it, and we express this by crossing ourselves. Upon the Holy Altar there permanently rests the holy tabernacle, containing the body and blood of Christ. It is always there. We reserve it for special needs, for the sick to whom we bring Holy Communion.
When I cross myself as I pass a church, this is what it means. It means confession; it means greeting; it means identification and acceptance. It means many things.
As you understand, then, my beloved, if I have the courage to make the sign of the Cross, this is the beginning of confessing Christ and His Precious Cross. And when I advance in virtue, then I shall be given the great reward, the great privilege, and the great gift. What is that gift? To confess Christ before rulers and kings, as the Lord says, and before synagogues, councils, thrones, and authorities, and to declare, “I am a Christian,” even if it costs me my life. Yet I shall never reach martyrdom, never receive the privilege of martyrdom—take note, it is a privilege. Saint Cyril says that it is the greatest gift of the Holy Spirit. When, God willing, we come in a few years to the catechesis in which he speaks about the Holy Spirit, we shall see there that martyrdom is a spiritual gift, truly a gift of the Holy Spirit. We shall never reach that point if we are ashamed to make the sign of the Cross. And now, my beloved, he continues by speaking about the value of the Cross, when it should be made, and so forth. As I said before, this is a most beautiful passage. Listen carefully: “Let the seal be boldly traced with the fingers upon the forehead, and let the Cross be made over everything: over the bread we eat and the cups we drink; when we enter and when we leave; before sleep, when lying down and when rising; when traveling and when resting. It is a mighty safeguard, free of charge for the poor and requiring no effort from the sick, for it is grace from God, a sign of the faithful and a terror to demons.” The Cross, he says, should be traced boldly with the fingers, like a seal, over everything. It should therefore be made over the bread we eat—that is, over our food.
“Over the bread we eat”—that is, at the table; “over the cups we drink”; “when we enter,” whenever we go into a place; “when we leave,” whenever we go out; before sleep, when we lie down, when we rise, when we walk, and when we sit—“when traveling and when resting.” “It is a mighty safeguard.” The Cross is a great protection, a powerful shield. It is free for the poor; they have nothing to pay, and no one can say, “I am poor, so I cannot have it.” The Cross costs absolutely nothing, and it requires no effort from the sick. Nor can a sick person say, “I cannot make the sign of the Cross because it takes too much effort.”
Let us examine a few points up to here, because he goes on to say more about the Precious Cross. First of all, when he says, “Upon the forehead, boldly, with the fingers,” we can see that the tradition of making the sign of the Cross is very ancient. We must not forget that these catechetical lectures date from the middle of the fourth century, around the year 350 after Christ. We also have evidence that the Cross was used for worship. During excavations at Pompeii—which, as we know, was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius around AD 70—
a small servant’s room was discovered containing a half-charred wooden cross. This showed that the servant was a Christian and kept the Precious Cross in his room for worship. What do the millenarian sectarians who say otherwise have to answer to this? That cross is, of course, kept in a museum, and it is not a stake, as those sectarians claim. The sight of the Cross is unbearable to them; they cannot look upon it. They are disturbed because the demon is disturbed, the demons are disturbed, and these people belong to the devil. Consequently, they reduce the Cross to a stake.
The devil is not disturbed by a stake, because a stake is not the Cross. It is as simple as that. So, regarding the sign of the Cross, remember that we are in the middle of the fourth century. Of course, if we had another text containing a reference to this point, perhaps we could say more. But this is what we have. Does he say, “with the three fingers”? No. He says, “boldly, with the fingers.” He does not say, “with three fingers.” “Boldly, with the fingers, let the seal be made,” and so forth, “upon the forehead,” and so on.
We Orthodox make the sign of the Cross by bringing together three fingers: the thumb and the next two fingers, namely the index and middle fingers. Thank you.
We bring them together and join them, in the familiar way. Though these fingers are not equal in length, when I hold them like this, they become equal. Their union expresses that the God whom we worship is one. The Persons are three, and they are equal. The Father is not greater than the Son, because His begetting is beyond nature and does not have the characteristics of human birth, where we can say that my father is, of course, older than I am.
Otherwise, he could not be my father. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are equal. They are three Persons.
Each has His own distinctive property: the Father begets, the Son is begotten, and the Holy Spirit proceeds. They are equal, yet there is one Godhead; these three fingers are joined together. At the same time, with the three fingers by which I make the sign of the Cross, I also express another Mystery. The first Mystery is the Mystery of the Holy Trinity, and the second great Mystery is the Mystery of the Divine Economy—that is, the Incarnation of the Son of God. This Mystery of the Incarnation is expressed by my other two fingers. You see these other two fingers folded beneath the three? They express the two natures of Jesus Christ, divine and human—the Mystery of the Divine Economy. And now, as I make the sign of the Cross...
I confess that I believe in the sacrifice of Him who was crucified for our sins. I express my faith in Jesus Christ as the God-Man, because these two Mysteries—the Triune Mystery of God and the Mystery of the Divine Economy, of the Incarnation—are the first and greatest Mysteries that define Christianity. All the other doctrines stand around them. All the other doctrines revolve around these two. Saint Cyril will tell us this a little further on. But let me mention it now, since it naturally comes to mind here. He says, “Therefore, first take the Cross as an unshakable foundation.”
“And upon it build the rest of the faith.” Take, he says, the unshakable foundation—the foundation without cracks or fissures, the utterly firm foundation. And what is that foundation? The Cross. What does the Cross express? The doctrine of the Incarnation. Upon this, he says, you are to build all the remaining teachings of the faith. Here, then, are the two great doctrines that define Christianity. If we accept them, we accept Christianity. Everything else, as we have said, completes our knowledge of Christianity. This is the meaning of his words, “Let the seal be made boldly with the fingers upon the forehead,” and so forth.
It may seem unnecessary to say this—but why should it be unnecessary?—the sign of the Cross must be made properly. When I cross myself, it means the following. First, I express what I believe. Second, I say that I am being crucified: upon this Cross that I am making, I myself am already being crucified.
I am already placing myself upon this Cross.
The Christian is crucified at every moment. Does not the Apostle Paul say, “I have been crucified with Christ”? I have been crucified together with Christ. Upon the Cross of Christ, I too, the believer, am crucified.
Do you know what this means? Let me put it in simple, practical terms. The Cross is the symbol of ascesis, of ascetic discipline, of the ascetic element we discussed during the question period. The ascetic life springs from the Cross. Can I therefore be saved without the Cross? Absolutely not. Then neither can I be saved without the ascetic element. When the ascetic element is removed from my life—and I call it the cruciform element, for they are the same thing—then my Christianity is no longer even authentic, and consequently I do not have salvation. Furthermore...
If this is how things are, do you not think that the sign of the Cross should be made reverently? And if it is made reverently, should it not also be made correctly and properly? I cannot make a parody of the Cross or some substitute shape for it. We make such substitutes when we begin to cross ourselves and touch the forehead—or somewhere around the nose, or a little lower—then move a palm’s breadth downward, and afterward begin somewhere over here and vaguely sweep across and downward. That is not the sign of the Cross. Call it whatever shape you like, but it is not the sign of the Cross. My dear friends, we must make the sign of the Cross with the greatest reverence: neither quickly, nor...
hurriedly, nor clumsily and misshapen. The Precious Cross must be traced properly upon our bodies. It should be made beautifully: to the forehead, down to the abdomen, then to the right shoulder, and then to the left shoulder. We must make the sign of the Cross well. Now, what...
does the upward point mean? What does the downward point mean? What does this side mean, and what does the other side mean? There are many beautiful and instructive interpretations, but I will not explain them, because I believe you know what they all signify. One example is that God was in the heavens, came down for my sake, and was crucified.
There are many interpretations of what the second movement of the Cross means and what the third means. I will not recount them. I will say only this: theology flows from the sign of the Cross, because the Cross is the true theology of our salvation and of God’s love. Saint Isaac the Syrian says that God had no other way to express His love. He expressed His love through the most terrible means, choosing what was worst for Himself. And what was the worst means for Him? His sacrifice upon the Cross, by which He showed us how deeply He loves us. If someone were asked to explain the words of the Holy Evangelist John, “For God so loved the world”—so loved it, loved it this much—how much?
He would point to the Cross. He loved us so much that He ascended the Cross. The Cross is the answer to the words “so much.” And now we move on. Saint Cyril says that the seal should be placed upon everything. Why does he call the Cross a seal? He says, “Let the Cross be made with the fingers as a seal, and upon everything.” You know that the implement we use when making prosphora is called a seal. You may say, “Of course; it is perfectly natural to call it a seal, because we carve the familiar designs into a flat, round piece of wood and press this seal upon the dough.” The design stands out in relief upon the dough; we place it in the oven...
and we have our familiar prosphoron. But that is not what is meant here, my dear friends. Of course, that implement is a seal; do not doubt that. Yet this is not why the Cross is called a seal. Do you know what a seal signifies? It is something that establishes validity and ownership. We say that we place a seal on a paper, a certificate, an authorization, or something of that kind. We place a seal on it. If it does not bear both a signature and a seal, the document is invalid. The Cross, then, is called a seal because it shows that we are God’s possession. Does not the Apostle Paul say to the Corinthians?
“You were bought at a price, and you are not your own.” I quoted it in reverse order: “You are not your own, for you were bought at a price.” You do not belong to yourselves, because a price has been paid for you. And what is that price? The Cross. How, then, is this purchase made by God—His ownership of us—to be established? By the seal. We belong to God; we are His possession through the seal. And what is that seal? The Precious Cross. This is why we say that we are sealed. When I make the sign of the Cross, I may say either that I am crucifying myself or that I am sealing myself. It is the same thing. You will see this in Baptism, where we often speak of the seal.
There, although the sign of the Cross is made, the seal is not simply that of the Precious Cross, but is made with Holy Chrism. As I am signed with the Cross, I am sealed, and we say, “The seal of the gift,” and so forth. A seal. This is why Baptism is indelible. The Mystery of Baptism is indelible and is not repeated. The seal has been placed once and for all. And so forth. You may ask, “What if someone goes over to heresy and falls away?” This falling away is not merely a sin; it is heresy. Heresy itself is the falling away. Even then, the seal does not disappear. It is simply that, if the person someday returns—how can I explain it? Let me give you an example. Suppose we, as a monastery, issue an official document and place our seal upon it.
Suppose we wish to withdraw some money. How can the bank know that the seal on the document is truly ours, and that the signatures belong to the abbot and the monastery council? We go to the Metropolis, and the Metropolis certifies it underneath; or we could go to the police station—the principle is the same. But we go to our proper authority, the Metropolis, and beneath our seal are placed the seal of the Metropolis and the signature of the Metropolitan, certifying that the monastery’s seal is genuine. A second seal is added. What does this mean? When a baptized believer becomes a heretic, he is not baptized again, because the seal has already been placed. There is simply...
a new recognition, a renewal of the seal, without repeating the Mystery. And do you know what we do when someone returns from heresy? We anoint him with Holy Chrism. A second sealing then takes place, confirming the first sealing—the seal of Baptism. What we do with Holy Chrism at Baptism is a second Mystery, as you know, because two Mysteries are involved: the Mystery of Baptism and the Mystery of Chrismation. There are two Mysteries. Through the image I have given you, I want to help you understand why a Mystery is not repeated. I mean, once again, the Mystery of Baptism. It is not repeated. The seal is indelible.
The seal of Holy Orders is likewise indelible. If a priest is deposed, that seal remains inactive, but it is not removed. Likewise, in a heretic, Baptism and the seal of the Precious Cross remain inactive because he is a heretic, but they are not erased. This seal, then, is a great thing, my dear friends—a great thing indeed. It is God Himself who seals us, not a human being. God Himself places the seal. And do you know what this seal means when the demons see it? They can no longer lay claim to that person. For we say that the whole creation was under demonic dominion—that is, under the possession of the demon, the devil. But when the seal of the Precious Cross is placed upon it, the devil relinquishes his claim.
“The earth is no longer my property; this person is no longer my property. He now belongs to someone else; he belongs to God.” Therefore, let the Cross be made “over bread that is eaten and over cups from which we drink.” In general, we would say that at our table we should make the sign of the Cross and say our prayer. My dear friends, at the table we should make the sign of the Cross and say our prayer. Make this a habit, so that your children will find it practiced in your home. When they grow up, they too will do it in their own homes. In this way it will become a tradition, a Christian tradition, passed down from generation to generation. This is how tradition works. Tradition is the passing on of the living experience of faith.
What I have received, I hand on. This is very important. And this prayer should be said. But if, at some point, I eat something outside my regular breakfast, lunch, or dinner, I can still make the sign of the Cross. It depends on each believer’s reverence and understanding of these things. If I take a bread ring during recess at school, or have a coffee and a bread ring at the office, should I make the sign of the Cross? I believe that all of you listening to this now will begin tomorrow morning: when you eat your bread ring at the office, you will make the sign of the Cross. Yes! Do you intend to prove me wrong? You will not.
No, you will not prove me wrong. I am certain of it. Tomorrow morning, at your workplace, in your office, wherever you may be, you will make the sign of the Cross as you eat your bread ring. You will remember me tomorrow morning. One more thing. On the Holy Mountain, as you know, whenever we eat or drink something, we also “baptize” the object, so to speak: we make the sign of the Cross over the cup, as well as over ourselves. You know that nature is under demonic dominion. But I had said that we would finish the thirteenth catechetical lecture today. No, it seems we shall carry on into next year! Pay attention. You know that nature is under demonic dominion. You know that, before we baptize a child, we first perform an exorcism over the water. We exorcise the water.
We command the lurking devil—the one who makes his lair in the water—to depart. When we perform the blessing of water, do we not drive out the lurking devil through the prayers and the action of the Church? And this is nothing other than the Tradition of the Church, which is rooted in Holy Scripture. You have seen depictions of the Baptism of Christ: there in the water is a beast, a dragon, as Christ is baptized in the Jordan. That is the one who lurks there. To lurk means to make one’s nest or lair somewhere. It is the devil hiding there. So what do we do? We perform an exorcism over the water, so that the devil may depart and the person may be baptized. If we make the sign of the Cross over this cup, we drive out the devil who may be lurking there and might do us harm.
“I drank a glass of water, and it made me ill.” You may say that it was cold and therefore harmed you. But who told you that nature itself can harm man? My dear friends, behind what we call natural harm there is, in fact, demonic harm. Accept this if you will. This is the teaching of the Orthodox Church. Nature does not harm; only the devil does harm through nature, when nature has not been sealed, when it does not bear the seal of God. Therefore, we shall make the sign of the Cross to drive out the dragon lurking there.
Furthermore, when the new fruits of the season appear, as you know, we take them to the Church. There is even a prayer for the new grapes. Grapes in particular are blessed in the Church on the sixth of August. Those of you who have a vineyard should not put a single grape into your mouth. Instead, cut the first bunch and take it to the Church on the sixth of August. Here in Thessaly, though, is the sixth of August late for grapes? Do they ripen earlier? I would tell you to cut your first bunch of grapes; or, if you wish, take the first flour made from this year’s wheat, or simply some of the wheat itself, or the seed you will sow in September or October. But let me return to the grapes, so as not to wander into too many subjects. Take a little basket and put a few bunches of grapes inside.
Take them to the Church. There is a special prayer “for the blessing of grapes.” The grapes will be blessed, which means that we receive the blessing and may now eat them. Notice something else. In ordinary daily life, tomatoes are now beginning to appear. “But,” you may say, “we have them all year round.” No, this is the season when tomatoes should be eaten—or rather, not yet, but next month.
The tomatoes we have now are artificial, greenhouse tomatoes. Wait until the true tomato season arrives. And listen to this: an agronomist told me that fruits and tomatoes with a pointed tip have been treated with hormones. When you see a tomato with a little point protruding from it, that is due to hormones. What consequences might this have later on?
We know what is generally known about these things. I do not know any more than that. I am not an agronomist; I am only telling you what I was told. When the season comes, we shall eat the first tomatoes. As soon as we take the first tomato and prepare to cut it, my dear friends, listen to me: let us raise our eyes toward heaven and, making the sign of the Cross, say, “Lord, we thank You for counting us worthy to see summer come once again; we did not die. We thank You that we are in good health and can eat tomatoes again.” The courgettes will appear, then the cucumbers and aubergines—every new first fruit: cabbages, oranges, cherries, throughout the whole year. Whenever a new fruit or vegetable comes into season, when we taste the first of it, let us give thanks to the Lord.
What are we doing through this? In the broad sense, we become priests. We offer thanksgiving for the creation God has given us. In this broad sense, you are doing nothing other than what the priest does when he says, “Your own of Your own we offer to You, in all and for all.” We offer You Your own gifts, which come from what is Yours. You gave us the tomatoes, and now we thank You. We offer them back to You. To offer something up means to present it. We offer the tomatoes to You and say, “We thank You.” What do you think of this giving and receiving between God and man? He receives and gives, receives and gives. Will the blessing ever come to an end?
Never. And man lives within this circle of blessing. This is exceedingly important. One more thing. Saint Cyril says that we should make the sign of the Cross when we enter, when we go out, before sleep, and so forth. We open our eyes and say, “Glory to You who have shown us the light.” Let us make the sign of the Cross while we are still in bed. We have awakened, though we might have died during the night. But I shall dwell on just one phrase: “when entering and going out.” You know that pedestrians are killed on the roads and cars collide. Do you want to be kept from harm? Do you want to travel without anything happening to you? Listen, my dear friends. Those of you who have a car, before leaving your home, make three prostrations before the icon of Christ. Venerate it and, making the sign of the Cross, say, “My Christ, protect me, my fellow passengers, and the car, so that no harm may come to us.”
But what if I do come to harm?
If I come to harm, God has permitted it. Why—do I not believe in Him who was stretched out upon the Cross? When I return from my journey or from my work, I shall again make three prostrations before the icon of Christ. This is separate from my morning and evening prayers; it is something distinct. I shall make the sign of the Cross again and say, “My Christ, I thank You for protecting me, my fellow passengers, and the car.” And on the windscreen, in a suitable place, do not hang blue beads, horseshoes, or things of that sort. These are relics of superstition; they are demonic. Place the Precious Cross there, and a small icon if you wish. Then, my dear friends, the Precious Cross truly is, as Saint Cyril says here, “a great safeguard”—a protection, a true safeguard.
Wearing the Precious Cross upon ourselves is also a great safeguard. When is this so? When we believe in it, when we believe in Him who was crucified upon the Cross, and when it is not merely an ornament. It may be made of wood or precious metal, of gold or silver; that does not matter. But I must believe in the Precious Cross, and I must believe in Jesus Christ. Then the Precious Cross will be a safeguard for me. But, God willing, we shall say something more about this next time.

Γι’ αυτό λέγει: «Είναι χειροποίητος άραγε ο τάφος; Άραγε είναι σαν και εκείνους τους τάφους, τους βασιλικούς, που είναι ψηλά από την επιφάνεια της γης και είναι κτισμένοι με λίθους μεγαλοπρεπείς; Εκ λίθων και γέγονε το μνήμα συγκειμένων;» Όπως θα λέγαμε αυτοί οι τάφοι, τα μαυσωλεία, που είναι πολυτελείς τάφοι, ή ακόμη οι πυραμίδες στην Αίγυπτο, μεγαλοπρεπέστατα μνημεία. Μήπως λοιπόν είναι κάπως έτσι;
τα τρία πρώτα κεφάλαια της Γενέσεως. Εκείνα τα οποία σήμερα έχουμε προσβάλει. Ήθελα να πω στην αγάπη πολλών και ιδίως αγαπητών και σεβαστών θεολόγων: Δεν ξέρουμε τι κάνουν άλλοι παρακάτω. Δεν ξέρουμε υπό ποια κριτήρια βγάζουν την Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Αλλά επικαλούμαι και λέγω: Είναι δυνατόν να κατανοηθεί το πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού χωρίς την Παλαιά Διαθήκη; Μπορώ να γνωρίζω την ταυτότητα του Ιησού Χριστού χωρίς τους προφήτες; «Τίνα με λέγουσιν οι άνθρωποι είναι;» Χρειάστηκε ένας Πρόδρομος για να δείξει ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Ουδείς μπορούσε να ξέρει. Πώς μπορούμε να ξέρουμε;
Αν λοιπόν, αγαπητοί μου, βγάλουμε την Παλαιά Διαθήκη, τι θα καταλάβουμε για τον Ιησού Χριστό; Θα πέσουμε στην ίδια κατάσταση, που θα χρειαζόμεθα πάλι έναν Πρόδρομο για να μας λέγει ότι αυτός είναι ο Ιησούς. Αλλά ο Πρόδρομος είναι ένας. Ήρθε και τελείωσε. Πώς θα κατανοήσουμε λοιπόν το πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού; Για να έρθω και στο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, όσο προσβάλλεται και λέγεται μυθολογία. Μυθολογία η ιστορία της δημιουργίας και ιδίως του ανθρώπου, εκεί που είναι όλη η χριστιανική ανθρωπολογία! Από εκεί βγαίνει η χριστιανική ανθρωπολογία και κατανοείται μετά εν Χριστώ Ιησού. Διότι είναι ο νέος Αδάμ. Πώς θα μπορώ; Ήδη τον ονόμασε ο Απόστολος Παύλος τον Χριστό νέον Αδάμ. Πώς θα μπορέσω να κατανοήσω τον νέο Αδάμ, εάν δεν γνωρίσω τον παλαιό Αδάμ;
Ο δεύτερος σταυρός τι σημαίνει, ο τρίτος σταυρός τι σημαίνει, υπάρχουν πολλά. Δεν σας τα λέγω, αλλά ένα μόνο: πώς η θεολογία βγαίνει από το σημείο του Σταυρού. Γιατί, απλούστατα, ο Σταυρός είναι η αληθής θεολογία της σωτηρίας μας και της αγάπης του Θεού. Διότι, λέει ο Άγιος Ισαάκ ο Σύρος, δεν είχε άλλους τρόπους ο Θεός να εκφράσει την αγάπη Του. Εξέφρασε την αγάπη Του με το χειρότερο τρόπο, διαλέγοντας το χειρότερο τρόπο. Δηλαδή, ποιος είναι ο χειρότερος τρόπος για τον εαυτόν Του; Η σταυρική Του θυσία, για να μας δείξει πόσο μας αγαπά. Αν θα έπρεπε να απαντήσει κάποιος σε εκείνο που λέει ο Ιερός Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης, «Ούτω γαρ ηγάπησεν ο Θεός τον κόσμον». Ούτω, τόσο. Πόσο;
έχουμε το γνωστό μας πρόσφορο. Όχι αυτό, αγαπητοί μου. Βεβαίως, αυτό είναι μία σφραγίδα, μην αμφισβητείτε ότι είναι μία σφραγίδα. Ο Σταυρός δεν λέγεται γι' αυτό σφραγίς. Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει σφραγίς; Θα πει κάτι που καθορίζει μια εγκυρότητα, μια ιδιοκτησία. Λέμε, βάζω τη σφραγίδα σε ένα χαρτί, σε ένα πιστοποιητικό, σε μία παραδοχή, ξέρω εγώ. Βάζω μια σφραγίδα. Αν δεν μπει υπογραφή και σφραγίδα, αυτό το έγγραφο είναι άκυρον. Λοιπόν, λέγεται σφραγίς διότι δείχνει ότι είμεθα η ιδιοκτησία του Θεού. Δεν λέει στους Κορινθίους ο Απόστολος Παύλος;
Είναι οι τεχνητές ντομάτες, οι νάιλον ντομάτες, όταν θα έρθει η εποχή της ντομάτας. Μάλιστα, ακούστε. Μου έλεγε ένας γεωπόνος ότι αυτά τα φρούτα, λέει, και αυτές οι ντομάτες που έχουν μύτη, είναι γιατί είναι από ορμόνες. Όταν βλέπετε ντομάτα με μύτη, βγάζει μια μύτη, είναι ορμονικό πράγμα αυτό. Τώρα, τι επιπτώσεις αυτό μπορεί να έχει παρακάτω;
Τι κάνουμε με αυτό; Γινόμεθα ιερείς, εν ευρεία εννοία. Προσφέρουμε ευχαριστία για την κτίση που μας προσέφερε ο Θεός. Εν ευρεία εννοία, δεν κάνετε τίποτε άλλο παρά εκείνο που κάνει ο ιερεύς όταν λέει: «Τα σα εκ των σων, Σοι προσφέρομεν κατά πάντα και διά πάντα». Σου προσφέρουμε τα δικά Σου από τα δικά Σου. Μας έδωσες τις ντομάτες και τώρα Σε ευχαριστούμε. Σου τις αναφέρομε. Αναφέρω θα πει παρουσιάζω. Σου τις αναφέρομε τις ντομάτες και Σου λέμε: «Σε ευχαριστούμε». Τι λέτε, μέσα σε αυτό το πάρε-δώσε του Θεού; Παίρνει, δίνει, παίρνει, δίνει. Θα τελειώσει ποτέ η ευλογία;
