Summary
Christ’s Resurrection is presented as the decisive confirmation of Christianity and the guarantee that the dead will rise. The Old Testament’s prophecies and typology, especially Jonah’s three days in the great fish and David’s promise that God’s Holy One would not see corruption, corroborate the historical event. The risen Christ’s greeting, “Rejoice,” transforms the disciples’ grief into enduring joy, first shared with the Theotokos according to Orthodox tradition and then with the Myrrh-bearing Women.

We are now, my beloved, at the fourteenth catechetical lecture.
In the thirteenth catechetical lecture, we spoke about the Crucifixion of Christ, His sacrifice on the Cross, and the consequences, the fruits, and the blessings of Christ’s sacrifice for us human beings. Now, in the fourteenth catechetical lecture, our subject is the Resurrection of Christ and, of course, the consequence of the event of Christ’s Resurrection: the resurrection of the dead. You understand, then, that if Christ is risen, Christianity is true. If Christ is not risen, Christianity is not true. This line of reasoning...
which I have given you is not my own. It is the Apostle Paul’s, from the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians. He shows that the final confirmation of Christianity—of its authenticity, its divine origin, and the fulfillment of all that it promises—is the resurrection of the dead. The Apostle Paul means that if Christ is not risen, then our faith is in vain and our preaching is also in vain. Do you see? Our faith is in vain, and our preaching is in vain. Everything is futile; everything amounts to nothing. The teachings of Christianity might merely stir the human heart a little.
But it would all be futile if we did not have the Resurrection of Christ. Take note also that Christ’s Resurrection has been attacked by the enemies of the Church and by unbelievers throughout every age. The first to devise a way to discredit Christ’s Resurrection were the chief priests, the scribes, and the Pharisees, when they paid the soldiers to say that Christ had not risen. Then came Porphyry and Celsus, the first systematic opponents of Christianity, and after them our contemporary deniers, who are so numerous that it would not even be worth the trouble...
or, better said, worth mentioning even their names. What? Not even their names. Not even their names. It is as God says: “I will by no means remember them.” I will not remember them—not because God has memory as we do, but in the sense that they are not written in the Book of Life and therefore remain outside God. They attacked the Resurrection of Christ precisely because it is the great foundation of Christianity’s truth. As I told you, it is the final confirmation; it is what gives Christianity its meaning. For the Apostle Paul says, “I fought with beasts at Ephesus.”
Whether we should take this literally or not—whether, that is, he was referring figuratively to a struggle against enemies and called that struggle a fight with beasts, or whether he was actually thrown to the beasts and fought them—we do not know. However that may be, the point is that he uses it as an argument. In the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians he says: If I went so far as to fight with beasts at Ephesus, yet there is no resurrection of the dead because there is no Resurrection of Christ, what benefit is that to me? Then the martyrs—and not to say again, as the Apostle Paul does, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Annunciation—the Saints have perished; they are lost. Nothing remains; there is nothing at all. Then why should I live a Christian life, which requires ascesis, if there is no resurrection of the dead? Again, the Apostle Paul says in the same chapter—and he offers a multitude of arguments there—what does he say? “Then let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” Let us eat and drink, then, and observe a kind of morality for the policeman and for the eyes of the world. In other words, let us appear to be honorable, because honorable conduct is, in a certain sense, fitting for human beings. But if no one sees me, I may do whatever I want, because I have no one to whom I must give an account. For, after all...
when Christ and His Resurrection are rejected, God is rejected as well. Tell me: who can deny Christ’s Resurrection without at the same time denying God? Do not tell me that such a person believes in some higher power. That is merely a pretext for claiming to believe, when in reality it is unbelief. Therefore, my beloved, the Resurrection is the supreme event: the center of the faith and the center and assurance of everything we believe and everything we are. You understand, then, why this subject is so great. And how does our Church show this? Through her most radiant feast.
She does not celebrate even the Nativity of Christ with such splendor, though John Chrysostom calls it the Mother of Feasts, of the feasts of the Lord. Why? Because, he says, if there had been no Nativity, there would have been no Resurrection. Our Orthodox people and our Church do not undervalue the Nativity, for through the Nativity the Son of God entered our human life and existence. Rather, they wish above all to emphasize the center of gravity of our faith, which is the Resurrection. That is why Pascha has been placed at the center of our festal life as the Feast of Feasts and the Festival of Festivals. Moreover, the Gospel readings do not begin with the first day of the calendar year, nor on September 1, when the liturgical year begins.
The Gospel book, as a printed book and as a cycle of readings, begins with the Gospel according to John, which comes first; and its opening passage, the first Gospel reading, is read at Pascha. The Gospel—that is, the cycle of Gospel passages—also begins to be read from the first day of Pascha. Furthermore, the echo of Pascha continues for forty days. What other feast has a leave-taking, an echo, lasting forty days? None, not even Christmas. Do you know how many days Christmas has? Precisely because the Circumcision and the other feasts follow, it lasts only five days. On December 30 we have the leave-taking of Christmas. It ends there.
But Pascha lasts forty days. For forty days we say and chant “Christ is risen” in every tone, and our greeting is “Christ is risen.” Yet not only for forty days, but for 360 days of the year, because every Sunday is a repetition of the feast of Pascha. Every Sunday we have the resurrectional troparia, and at Matins we have a resurrectional Gospel passage. From liturgical life itself, then, you see the evidence of the place held by the event of Christ’s Resurrection within our Church, within our consciousness, and within our lives. For this reason...
we must pay close attention to this subject and establish it firmly within ourselves, so that no doubt whatsoever remains, but that we may live the event of the Resurrection, from which everything flows. Even morality itself flows from it. At one point in this rather long catechetical lecture, we shall hear: “The root of all good things”—oh, forgive me—“the root of every virtue,” it says, “is the resurrection of the dead.” But the resurrection of the dead means the Resurrection of Christ. Do you see? The root of every virtue, of every good deed, the root of morality itself, is the Resurrection. This, then, is a great subject.
The prologue—or, if you prefer, the heading—of the catechetical lecture is as follows: “Addressed to those who are to be illumined.” This means that it is offered to those from the ranks of the catechumens who are preparing to be baptized. “Delivered extemporaneously in Jerusalem,” meaning that it was composed in Jerusalem, because these catechetical lectures were given there, in the Church of the Resurrection, by Saint Cyril, who was then Bishop of Jerusalem. “On the words”—that is, the subject—“and rose again from the dead on the third day, ascended into heaven, and sat at the right hand of the Father.” This article of faith, then, is the subject that will be explained in this catechetical lecture. “And the reading is from the First Epistle to the Corinthians: ‘Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the Gospel which I preached to you,’” and so forth, “‘that He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures,’” and so forth. We have never before read the corresponding Gospel or epistle passage from the preface or title of each catechetical lecture. Today, however, we shall do so, and I shall read exactly what is given here, so that we may have an idea of what we are about to examine. I open, then, to the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians and read from the beginning.
“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the Gospel which I preached to you, which you also received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved.” Pay attention here: the Gospel which you received and accepted, in which you have stood, and through which you are saved. Do you see? “If you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received.” I delivered to you what I myself received. Therefore, this is Tradition. “That Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, “and that He was buried.”
Since He was buried, He truly died; “and He rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.” He rose on the third day according to the Scriptures. Therefore, since He truly died and was truly buried, He also truly rose. The Resurrection was not merely an appearance, nor is it a symbolic expression or a subjective experience of the disciples. What I am telling you now comes from what we might call contemporary arguments made by modern enemies of the Resurrection...
who have said that their minds cannot accept it—that they simply cannot conceive of it. They claim that the disciples created it subjectively within themselves out of their great longing and love for Christ: their longing and love raised Him from the dead, not that He truly rose. Fairy tales! Here we see the disciples in terrible doubt and despair. Remember Thomas. Remember that the Lord stood before them, and still they did not believe. “But while they still did not believe for joy,” Luke records. He said to them, “What do you have to give Me to eat? Come and touch Me.” He said this on the first Sunday, the first day of the Resurrection...
“so that you may see that a phantom does not have...” “They supposed they had seen a spirit”; they thought they were seeing a phantom. “A phantom does not have bones and flesh,” He says, “as you see that I have.” Do you see? This is why I told you that all these foolish theories advanced by the enemies of the faith collapse into nothing. But we ourselves must be firmly grounded, so that we are not shaken when one day we hear or read something. And do you know when such things are written? During Holy Week. They are written in newspapers and magazines, supposedly for the feast of the Passion and the Resurrection. They include such negative things in order to scandalize the faithful, since most of our Christians are not firmly grounded. “Therefore He died, was buried...”
“and rose on the third day.” Pay attention to something here, because we shall dwell on it at length. Both the statement that “He died for our sins” is followed by “according to the Scriptures,” and the statement that “He rose on the third day” is again followed by “according to the Scriptures.” What are these Scriptures? They are the Old Testament. They are the prophecies—not only the spoken prophecies of the prophets, but also the typology of the Old Testament. Typology means this: a historical event that happened among the Hebrews and concerned them also serves as a type that prefigures the Resurrection of Christ. To help you understand how exceedingly important the typology of Holy Scripture, of the Old Testament, is, consider this characteristic example. When Christ spoke to the rulers—that is, to His enemies—about His Resurrection and said that He would rise on the third day, they remembered what He had told them. This itself is proof. “We remember,” they said to Pilate, “that this deceiver said, ‘On the third day I will rise.’” Therefore, they said, to prevent a deception worse than the first—to prevent people from first making Him the Messiah and then spreading the report that He had risen—seal the tomb, so that the story of this false messiah may also be sealed...
upon that rock, in that tomb, and remain there unto the ages of ages. Miserable, poor people! These men, then, knew what Christ had said. The remarkable thing, by divine providence, is that His enemies remembered, while the disciples, who had heard it even in private meetings with the Lord, did not remember. This is indeed remarkable, but it happened according to the divine economy, because it provides assurance of the Resurrection. For this reason...
when Christ was asked—or rather, when He spoke—about His Resurrection, He offered an argument. That argument was a prophecy. Yet this prophecy did not consist of spoken words from the prophets. It came through a prophet, but not as words, as we read, for example, in the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah concerning His Crucifixion: “We saw Him, and He had no form or beauty,” and so forth. He took nothing of that kind from Isaiah, the most eloquent of the prophets. Do you know what He took? He took a typological prophecy. He took Jonah and said, “Just as Jonah...”
“was swallowed”—the fish swallowed him, and he remained, it says, three days and three nights in the belly of the sea creature—“so shall the Son of Man remain three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Do not take the three-day period according to the way we count three full days; when we reach that subject, we shall explain why it is not so. But what did that sea creature do? It vomited Jonah out, and Jonah continued on his way to Nineveh. For if the sea creature had not vomited Jonah out, the story would have had no particular significance. A fish ate a man. How many fish have eaten human beings down to this day? The point is that the fish swallows you, that you remain in its belly for three days...
three nights, and then have it vomit you out without your suffering any harm. Do you know what the gastric juices of a fish—or even a bird—are like? The strongest gastric juices are said to be those of birds. They digest almost anything! What can a hen not digest? Fish come next; they have very powerful stomachs. Jonah remained there for three days, while the gastric juices were constantly at work, as they are whenever food enters the stomach. Yet Jonah suffered no harm, because the Son of God suffered no corruption when He died. “Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption,” says the Apostle Peter to the Jews. This is David’s prophecy, which we studied in the Book of Acts last year, if you remember. So which prophecy did the Lord cite? The prophecy
of Jonah. But what do we have here? Not words, but an event. The Lord presented this as evidence of His Resurrection. Therefore, it is not only what the prophets said, but also what is prefigured typologically in the Old Testament. Yesterday I explained to you what typology means: the people of Israel are a typological people. The events that occur in the life of Israel are at the same time prophecies, referring either to the person of Jesus Christ or to the Church. This is not a minor detail; it is extremely important. Unfortunately, very many people, including those who engage in theology,
have not used what we might call typological interpretation in recent years. As a result, they go astray and draw all sorts of strange conclusions from Holy Scripture. Fortunately, however, we Orthodox have come to understand the value of typological interpretation, and we are returning to examine it once again. Saint Cyril, then, makes use of Holy Scripture, the prophets, and typology. Why? Because the Apostle Paul does so. What did he say? “According to the Scriptures.” If you doubt Christ’s redeeming death, go to the Scriptures; Isaiah has still more to say. If you doubt Christ’s Resurrection, go to the Scriptures.
Thus the Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians about something joined together with a bond unlike anything else in history: the event and the prophecy, the prophecy and the event. I have given you before the example I am about to give again. Cement is powder, and water is very soft. Cement by itself cannot build anything, and water by itself cannot raise anything up. But mix the water with the cement and see what you produce: hard stone. Then you can build as many stories as you wish. So it is here: if we had only the events...
without the testimony of the Scriptures, we might say that the events could deceive us. The event is a miracle, but the prophecy is an even greater miracle than the event. Yet prophecy, if it is not fulfilled by events, remains suspended and unconfirmed. Thus the event can be called into question, while an unfulfilled prophecy comes to nothing. The whole thing becomes useless. Put the two together, however, and you form the foundation of salvation. This is what the Apostle Paul does: He died—this is the event. According to the Scriptures—this is the prophecy. He rose—this is the event. According to the Scriptures—this is the prophecy.
Do you understand? It is a rock. Therefore, when a believer understands things in this way and knows them, he acquires within himself the firm assurance that Christ rose from the dead. And if Christ rose, then we too shall rise; Christ will come again and judge the world; the Kingdom of God and eternal Hell will become realities, and so forth. Then everything follows its proper course and falls into place. And now, my beloved, we come to our next point. I should tell you that a little further on in this same chapter, the Apostle Paul names those to whom Christ appeared. He says:
“He was seen by Cephas, then by the Twelve. After that He was seen”—that is, He appeared and became visible—“by more than five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain until now.” Paul is telling the Corinthians, “I have witnesses; most of them are still alive,” though “some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. And last of all, as by one untimely born, He was seen by me also.” Last of all, as though I were an aborted child. You know that an aborted child is what results from a woman’s miscarriage. And he calls himself such a child. Do you see? During the question period we spoke of being a servant; yet the Apostle Paul does not even call himself a servant, but one untimely born. Why? Because I came last, like...
a woman giving birth prematurely to a child that was not brought to full development in her womb. “That is what I am like,” Paul says. “As by one untimely born, He was seen by me also”: Christ appeared to me. If Paul had not seen Christ on the road to Damascus, he would not have become Paul. He would not have been the steadfast Paul if he had not seen Christ. He himself writes elsewhere, “Have I not seen the Lord Jesus?” “Did I not see the Lord Jesus?” he says. You see, then, how firmly the Apostle Paul establishes this truth. And now, my beloved, God willing, after this brief and perhaps important analysis
of the preface to the title of the Fourteenth Catechesis, we come to the main subject that Saint Cyril examines here. Paragraph one: “Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and celebrate, all you who love Jesus, for He has risen.” Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and all of you who love the Lord Jesus, celebrate. “For He has risen.” “Rejoice, all you who formerly mourned when you heard of the audacity and lawlessness of the Jews.”
“He who was insulted by them here has risen again here. And just as hearing about the Cross brought sorrow, so let the good news of the Resurrection bring joy to those present. Let mourning be turned into gladness, and lamentation”—the weeping and beating of the breast—“into joy. Let our mouth be filled with joy and gladness because, after the Resurrection, He said, ‘Rejoice.’ For during the past days I saw the sorrow of those who love Christ. Since what had been said ended with His death and burial, without yet proclaiming the Resurrection, your minds remained in suspense, longing to hear what you desired. Therefore, the dead One has risen, He who among the dead is free.”
“He is the liberator of the dead. He who, in dishonor, patiently endured the crown of thorns has risen and placed upon His head the diadem of victory over death.” As you saw, the first paragraph has a festal and rhetorical character. It is, we might say, like bells ringing with joy. This is how Saint Cyril welcomes the catechumens, with complete joy and celebration. “I saw you grieving,” he says, “because you heard of the Lord’s burial and death. But now, although you had not yet heard...” My beloved, I would like to dwell on only two or three points from this preface. Thank you.
Of course, let me translate it for you. I will translate as we go so that we do not lose time. “Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and celebrate, all you who love Jesus.” Rejoice, O Jerusalem. But which Jerusalem is to rejoice? Had Jerusalem grieved over Christ’s Resurrection? When the rulers of the people saw that He had risen, they must have been terrified. For the testimony of the Resurrection did not come to them from disciples or believers; it came from soldiers. What a tremendous thing! It came from the very guards who had kept watch over the Lord while He lay dead. They were therefore deeply disturbed. That is why they hurried to pay these men to say that He had not risen and that, “while we were sleeping,” the disciples came
and stole the body. Which Jerusalem, then, is to rejoice and be glad? My beloved, this is the spiritual Jerusalem. It is the Church. It is the Jerusalem above, as mentioned in the Apocalypse, or as the Apostle Paul speaks of the historical Jerusalem and the spiritual, heavenly Jerusalem, whose children are the Christians. In other words, it is the Church. Thus the meaning is: rejoice and be glad, O Church. The great joy of the Church, my beloved, is Christ’s Resurrection and the resurrection of the dead. The Church possesses a boundless treasury, a storehouse of joy.
It is an inexhaustible treasury. Whatever the Church may suffer—persecution or mistreatment—she still possesses this treasury of joy. Why? Because Christ has risen. This is her great joy. The Lord also said to His disciples, “No one will take your joy from you.” No one can take this joy away from you or remove it from within you. Another point is Saint Cyril’s call for us to be filled with joy because of Him who rose and said, “Rejoice.” This was the first word of our risen Lord: “Rejoice.” For the first persons He met...
He met them because He willed to meet these particular persons. They were the Myrrh-bearing Women, who were going to the tomb to pay honor to the dead Jesus. You know the account, so I will say no more. Naturally, we will often refer to historical details, because they also provide confirmation. Our Church holds that the first person whom the Lord saw and met was the Theotokos. This, of course, is not written in Holy Scripture, but the Fathers of our Church—Saint Gregory Palamas and other Fathers—note and emphasize it.
For should not the person who gave birth to Him, whose heart was pierced by a two-edged sword, and who witnessed the full tragedy of the Crucifixion—the Theotokos who stood beneath the Cross of Christ—have been the first to receive this joy? Although the historical Gospels are silent about it, the Theotokos was the first person to receive the risen Jesus. Since she was one person, He must have said to her, “Rejoice”—that is, “Be filled with joy.” This is precisely what the word “rejoice” means: have joy.
He uses the plural because He meets several persons. These are the women who went to the tomb; He meets them on the road and says to them, “Rejoice.” You see, then, that this greeting was not the customary greeting used among the Jews. Do you know what their customary greeting was? It took various forms. The greetings of the Jews were very beautiful indeed. For example, “May the Lord bless you,” and so forth. These were the greetings of the Jews. When they met one another, they would say such things as, “May the Lord bless you.” We say this even today, especially in monastic settings.
This greeting, then, is new—entirely new. The Lord’s greeting, “Rejoice,” is filled with meaning. It means: have joy. The time has come for you to rejoice. He had told His disciples, “The world will rejoice at My death. You will grieve, but soon you too will rejoice.” He was referring precisely to the Resurrection. The word “Rejoice,” my beloved, refers to His Resurrection. We Greeks have taken this greeting from here, since the Gospel was originally written in Greek. Until recently, we used to say, “Rejoice,” as our ordinary greeting.
I would see you and say, “Rejoice.” You would see me and reply, “Rejoice.” Today we say, “Hi.” Now compare the two and see how impoverished that “Hi” is. If two youngsters say it to each other, it is tolerable. But when a youngster says “Hi” to a priest or to his teacher, it does not seem very fitting. Does it? My beloved, let us return to “Rejoice.” It is both a Christian and a Greek greeting. We also say “adieu.” It is well known that this is the French adieu, meaning “to God.” In other words, it resembles what the Jews said in their greetings: may you have God’s blessing, may you walk in God’s way, and so forth.
These are not bad greetings; they are beautiful. I am not telling you to stop using them. But why should we abolish this supreme greeting, this royal greeting of Christ the King, and cease to say, “Rejoice”? At least those of you listening to me here, if you have been saying “Hi” or something else, I ask you: let us return once more to “Rejoice.” I would even say that this greeting could be used during the forty days of the Resurrection, together with “Christ is risen.” It could be said in this way: one person says, “Christ is risen,” and the other replies, “Truly He is risen.”
Instead of “Truly He is risen,” one might say... Now, take care: I am not suggesting that we change anything. I am simply offering this as a thought. One person would say, “Christ is risen,” and the other would reply, “Rejoice.” In other words, since Christ is risen, be well, be joyful—or let us rejoice. And there is one more point from the introduction. He says, “Therefore the dead One has risen, He who among the dead is free.” Forgive me: the dead One has risen, He who is free among the dead, and who is also “the liberator of the dead.” This is a very beautiful phrase. “Free among the dead” comes from Psalm 87:5, and here it means that the One who died...
who is free among the dead is not held captive by Hades; and because He is not held captive by Hades, He is also the liberator of the dead.
We shall stop here with these three points from the first paragraph and move on to the second: “But just as we presented the testimonies concerning His Cross, so now let us also confirm the proofs concerning the Resurrection.”
This is what I told you at the beginning of our talk: just as, he says, we presented the testimonies concerning the Cross...
concerning the Cross, so now we shall also present the testimonies and proofs concerning Christ’s Resurrection. Thank you. Saint Cyril is a catechist, and of course he is not speaking to a flock that has already come to faith, but to one that is being called to believe. For this reason, quite rightly, he uses proofs. This is very important. We might say that it is the mark of a good teacher who wishes to establish knowledge firmly in those being taught. He wants the catechumens to be firmly grounded, to understand, and to be able to answer those who may say all kinds of things. For this reason, he says, we shall present the proofs once again. Of course, someone who truly believes no longer needs proofs. But someone who does not know...
does need proofs. We say that we are believers, but we have received no catechesis. Where are we to receive it? This is a major matter that has become so weak within our Church because of infant Baptism, which ought to presuppose that catechesis will follow afterward. For this reason, our people need continual catechesis, such as what is taking place at this very moment. Therefore, we shall make use of proofs, because we cannot claim that the truths of the faith have been firmly established within all believers. No; the proofs must always be presented, for the simple reason that we are always catechumens, always being instructed. So...
“The Apostle before us says: ‘He was buried and rose on the third day according to the Scriptures.’” Why do I make this argument? Saint Cyril asks. Because what did the Apostle whose words we read say? “According to the Scriptures.” Very well, then; we too shall use the Scriptures. This is the wonderful position taken by Saint Cyril. “Since the Apostle has therefore referred us to the testimony of the Scriptures, it is good for us to recognize the hope of our salvation and first to learn whether the divine Scriptures tell us the time of His Resurrection: whether it takes place in summer or autumn, or perhaps...” after winter; and from what places He rises, and what the name of the place of the Resurrection is, as proclaimed in the wondrous prophecies; and whether women sought Him and did not find Him, but afterward found Him and rejoiced—so that, when the Gospels are read, the accounts of the Holy Gospels may not be regarded as myths or poetic tales.” Very beautiful. My dear friends, we shall search the Scriptures. What time did the prophets tell us about? What season did they indicate? Summer, autumn, winter, or after winter? And what is the name of the place where this Resurrection of Christ occurred? Do the prophets say anything about it? Indeed they do.
Did women meet the risen Jesus? Saint Cyril says that we shall search for all these things in the prophets. And by finding them in the prophets, it will be ensured that, “when the Gospels are read, the accounts of the Holy Gospels may not be regarded as myths or poetic tales.” We compare the prophets with the events recounted in the Gospels. For what are the Gospels? My dear friends, the Gospels are not prophecies, although they also contain prophecies. The Gospels are history; they record history, events, and descriptions of events. I repeat: this does not mean that they do not also contain prophecies that will be fulfilled in the Last Things, and so forth. But in essence, their narratives concern the person of Jesus Christ.
Thus, we compare the prophets with the Gospel narratives so that we do not end up saying that what the Gospels relate consists of myths, epics, or poetic tales. For example, what did Homer write? Is it true or false? Did Troy exist in that way? Did the Trojan War happen or not? Was Odysseus real? Ilion means Troy—iota, iota, with a smooth breathing and acute accent: Ilion is Troy. There was a beautiful building—and I believe it is still here in Athens, on Panepistimiou Street—called the Iliou Melathron, belonging to the Archaeological Society. Melathron means palace, and Iliou Melathron means the palace of Troy. Iliou Melathron—with two iotas.
So, he asks, could the Gospels be something of that kind, like Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad? Could they be fairy tales? What of those who have said that the Gospels are myths? It is they who speak myths. The Gospels record events. Do you see how Saint Cyril approaches his subject? He approaches it beautifully, establishing it on firm evidence. Therefore, my dear friends, when you hear people outside saying that the Gospels are myths, take great care. If you cannot answer those who say such things, at least do not allow your faith to be shaken. That in itself is of great value. And now we move on to the third paragraph.
“When the Saviour spoke of His burial, you clearly heard in the previous discourse Isaiah say, ‘His burial shall be in peace.’ For through His burial He made peace between heaven and earth, bringing sinners to God; and again, ‘The righteous one has been taken away from the face of injustice.’” Let us look closely at this. What does Isaiah declare? Saint Cyril takes this passage from chapter 57, verse 2: “His burial shall be in peace.” He then explains that Christ truly made peace between heaven and earth through His burial—that is, through His death.
Of course, when we speak of burial, we mean death, because whom do we bury? We bury the dead. Christ is indeed the One who made peace between heaven and earth through His death. For when Christ died upon the Cross, the word spoken by God was fulfilled: “When you transgress My law, you shall die.” But we die spiritually and afterward biologically. It is well known that death entered through the transgression of our first parents: “On the day you eat of it, you shall surely die.” Someone therefore had to pay the debt without owing anything Himself. And this could be none other than the sinless Son of God, who became man. Thus He pays on behalf of humanity, and He Himself dies. Having paid, He settled the account. And once the account is settled, there is no longer any breach between the two sides. What is the first side? Heaven—God. What is the second? Humanity. Was there peace between heaven and earth? No, because there was sin, and therefore there was enmity. Christ comes and, though righteous, pays through His death. I repeat what I told you: He had no debt of His own to pay. In this way He makes peace between heaven and earth. Once the account was settled, He tore up, as it says, the record of sins...
and so forth. Thus Jesus Christ... Children, children, today I seem to be speaking here in the style of a running commentary, as you can see, and sometimes my tongue runs away with me. My dear friends, Jesus Christ comes and settles the account; and by settling it, He reconciles the two sides—God and humanity. How did the Prophet Isaiah express it? “His burial shall be in peace.” And the same prophet says in the same chapter, in the preceding verse, verse 1, “The righteous one has been taken away from the face of injustice.” That is, from before injustice—for “face” here means “before”—the righteous One was taken away.
He was removed from their midst. “Away with such a man!” “Away with Him! Away with Him!” comes from the verb meaning “to take away” or “to lift up,” and here it means to kill: remove him from our midst, put him to death, kill him. That is the meaning of “Away with him.” You know, the expression has passed into our everyday speech with the meaning “very quickly,” perhaps because of how people heard it. Someone says, “We gathered our belongings in a great hurry.” That is how we use the expression. You understand, however, that this is not its proper meaning. It means, “Away with such a man,” as the Jews said of the Apostle Paul in Jerusalem. In other words, “Remove him from our midst; take him away; put him to death; kill him,” they said to Lysias the commander. So the words “has been taken away” mean that the righteous One was removed—that is, put to death.
“The righteous one has been taken away from the face of injustice,” and again, he repeats, “His burial shall be in peace.” Do you see what is being said here?
“From the face of injustice,” because it was injustice that brought Christ to the Cross. Christ remains silent; and when the Apostle Peter tries to prevent Him from going up to Jerusalem because of what might happen there—and what indeed did happen—the Lord tells him that he is placing an obstacle in His path. For the Lord’s plan is to pay for our sins. Yet “the righteous One was put to death before the face of injustice.” Do you see? For we, acting unjustly, put our Lord to death. Yet His death ultimately became the medicine of our salvation. “And I shall give the wicked in return for His burial.”
This is in Isaiah 53, verse 9. It is a somewhat difficult passage. Saint Cyril interprets “And I shall give the wicked in return for His burial” in the following sense: whom shall I give? I shall give over, as it were—I shall surrender—the wicked. We shall see who these wicked people are. This will happen because of the death of the righteous One. In other words, the meaning is this: I shall punish them for the crime that was committed, and if they remain without metanoia, without repentance, I shall punish them for the death of My Son. My dear friends, this happened exactly as the Lord Himself prophesied and declared. What did He say? “Jerusalem...”
“You will be delivered into the hands of your enemies because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” Here “visitation” means the visit God made to you. You did not recognize it, and you will therefore be delivered to your enemies. Our Lord wept over this. You see, He wept, which means that the punishment comes as a moral consequence of this people’s conduct. This was the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70 by the Roman general Titus, who besieged it and destroyed it in a terrible and exemplary manner. This prophecy of Isaiah could therefore be applied here.
Centuries before Christ, Isaiah said that the wicked would be delivered up in return for His burial. In other words, the wicked are held accountable for their deeds. The speaker applies this warning to those who persist in unbelief. If you ask me, “Are you turning against the Jews?”...
I shall answer you. It is well known that our city has Jewish residents, is it not? Someone among the citizens of our city might ask, “Why should I turn against the Jews?” I shall state the position expressed by the Apostle Paul: “Enemies for the Gospel’s sake, but beloved for the fathers’ sake.” That is the answer. Let me explain it, because I may often speak about the Jews. It must not be thought that I am turning against, for example, the Jews of Larissa. God forbid. But I wish to state and emphasize what Paul says. Take care: “Enemies for the Gospel’s sake.” With respect to the Gospel, the Jews are enemies. Does this require explanation? No, it does not; we understand it. But they are “beloved for the fathers’ sake.”
The fathers are the righteous ones of the Old Testament—Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the rest. Therefore, the Jews are beloved because of the fathers from whom they descend. We might say that the flowerpot is cherished because the basil is cherished—or, as our people say, “For the basil’s sake, the flowerpot is watered.” Thus, according to the Apostle Paul’s position, they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. Yet did we not receive the prophets from the Jews? At this moment I am closing the Old Testament, which—
—if I need anything, I can immediately open again. Moreover, what Saint Cyril cites—presents, forgive me—comes from the Old Testament. All these passages are from the Old Testament. Therefore, we cannot reject the Jews, for the sake of the fathers. That is how it is. Nevertheless, they are people deserving of great sorrow—great sorrow indeed. Just as the Lord wept for them in His humanity, so too, my beloved, we could weep for them, because they willfully persist in rejection and unbelief. But since the hour is late, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.
