Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem reads Jeremiah’s innocent lamb and the wood placed in his bread as prophecies of Christ’s voluntary Passion and Crucifixion. The bronze serpent raised by Moses prefigures the Crucifixion, teaching that salvation comes through faith in the incarnate Son of God rather than through a material object. The lecture urges sustained, prayerful study of Scripture so that its fortified meanings may open and reveal Christ’s divine identity and saving work.

My dear friends, we are still in the thirteenth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, concerning the Crucifixion and Burial of our Lord Jesus Christ—“the One Who Was Crucified and Buried,” as the title of the lecture says—and we have reached paragraph nineteen. We already examined a small part of this paragraph, about five lines, last time. “But someone will say to me, ‘You are inventing clever explanations. Show me, from a prophet, the wood of the Cross’”—in other words, point me to a prophecy that speaks of the wood of the Cross.

“Unless you present testimony from a prophet, I will not believe you.” This is, we might say, an inner dialogue: Saint Cyril asks the question himself and answers it himself. Unless you give me a prophetic saying, I will not be convinced. “Listen, then, to Jeremiah, who confirms it.” Listen, therefore, to the Prophet Jeremiah, who gives confirmation. And since Saint Cyril uses the word “confirm” here, I would like to make a brief observation. If you ask why Saint Cyril insists on this point—and why, consequently, we also insist upon it, and have taken so long to finish this Catechetical Lecture, as we did with the earlier ones—why we try to explain in detail

everything we discuss, especially what the prophets say about the person of Jesus Christ, I believe you understand what we are doing. We are trying to establish the identity of the person of Jesus Christ. The whole purpose is to show both ourselves and others who Jesus Christ is. And if we establish that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Who became incarnate; that He is God the Word (Logos); that He is the One seated upon the exalted throne, as Isaiah saw; that He is the One Who spoke on Sinai; that He is the awe-inspiring God,

Who fills creation with fear, Who touches the mountains and they smoke, Who looks upon the earth and it trembles—if we show that this very One is Jesus Christ, what more could I want? This is why we devote so much attention, care, and effort to learning the identity of the person of Jesus Christ. Therefore, I ask you to remain attentive, as you have been, and to keep coming, as you have been. All this is of great benefit to us, so that we may stand firm—and not merely stand firm, but truly live the Christian life—for then, we might say, our Lord Jesus Christ becomes a living reality for us.

Jeremiah says: “But I was like an innocent lamb being led to slaughter; did I not know it?” “I,” he says, “was like an innocent lamb being led to be sacrificed; did I not know it?” Here Saint Cyril makes a fine textual observation, we might say. For the Fathers also did the kind of work modern theologians do: they prepared what we might call a critical edition of a text. “Read it this way,” Saint Cyril says, “as a question.” You should read this verse with a question mark. So I went to the Old Testament.

The passage is found in Jeremiah, chapter 11, verse 19. There is no question mark there. What is happening? The Fathers of our Church were, of course, familiar with various translations of the Old Testament. As for the New Testament, there was no such issue, since it was written in Greek.

They consulted whatever had been preserved in translation, the principal translation being the Septuagint. With other versions also before them, they produced, so to speak, a critical edition, enabling them to approach the sacred texts with ever greater precision. And do you know who accomplished the most exact and truly formidable work of this kind?

Origen. His work arranged in six columns, the Hexapla of the Old Testament—six columns! What an undertaking! He gathered all the translations available in his time and placed them side by side. It was said that a pack animal was needed to carry such a book; no man could lift it. How could it be so large? I have told you that story before. The sentence, then, must be read as a question: “Did I not know?” Here it says: “But I was like an innocent lamb being led to slaughter; did I not know it?” And Saint Cyril continues: “For He Who says, ‘You know that’”

“‘after two days the Passover takes place, and the Son of Man is delivered up to be crucified’—did He, then, not know?” He Who said that after two days He would be crucified and delivered up—did He not know it? But He Himself foretold it. Thus Saint Cyril wishes once again to emphasize that the Passion was voluntary. The voluntary nature of the Passion is exceedingly important. Christ was not seized against His will; He willed it. He was not overcome through weakness. His Passion was an offering freely made. “But I was like an innocent lamb being led to slaughter; did I not know it?” Which lamb is this?

“Let John the Baptist interpret it when he says, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world.’” Who is this innocent lamb? We turn to another passage of Holy Scripture, to Saint John the Baptist. What does he say? “Behold, the Lamb of God.” And to whom did he point? To Christ. Who, then, is Jeremiah’s lamb? Jesus Christ. “They devised an evil design against me, saying...” Jeremiah says this again in the same verse. “Did He Who knows the logismoi—the hidden thoughts—fail to know what was going to happen?” This is very important. “They devised an evil design against me and said” what they said. It is exactly what the Lord

asked His disciples: “Who do people say that I, the Son of Man, am?” And when I told you earlier that we are seeking to discover the identity of Jesus Christ, this is precisely the question we are trying to answer: we are answering Christ as to Who He is. And what did the Apostle Peter say? “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This is what we must say; this is the confession we must attain. But what did the people have? All kinds of logismoi—misguided thoughts. The most dreadful was what His crucifiers said: “He said that He is the Son of God. If He is the Son of God, let Him come down from the Cross. If God desires Him, let God take Him down from the Cross, since He said that He is the Son of God.” Do you see this?

“They devised an evil design. Did He Who knows the logismoi—the thoughts of men—not know what would happen to Him?” Once again, Saint Cyril demonstrates that the event was voluntary. And what did they say? Pay attention: “Come, and let us put wood into His bread,” as Jeremiah 11:19 says, still in the same passage. Come, let us put wood into His bread. Today we might say: let us put poison in it, or put something in it that will kill him. But do you not find the image rather strange—that his enemies should put wood into

his bread? What would that wood be? Sawdust kneaded together with the flour, or a piece of wood? If we accept the second possibility, do you not think it is far too crude? And does not the very strangeness and crudeness of the image make us suspect that the prophet intends to say something more? Listen, then, and marvel. “And if the Lord should hereafter count you worthy of greater knowledge”—Saint Cyril says to the catechumen, if the Lord counts you worthy to attain fuller knowledge—then further on you will learn “that, according to the Gospel, His body bore the type of bread.” His body, he says, was the bread according to the Gospel account, for He Himself said: “I am the bread that comes down from heaven. I am the bread which came down from heaven.” What, then, is the body of Christ? Pay attention: the body of Christ is the bread. “Come, therefore. Let us put wood into His bread.” Come, then, let us place wood into His bread—that is, wood upon His body; in other words, come, let us crucify Him. It is astonishing! As I have told you many times, the prophecy was hidden from the devil, but made manifest after the event.

In the light of the events, we can now understand the prophecies. “And let us destroy Him from the land of the living.” Let us crush Him, grind Him down, wipe Him from the land of living men, the same prophet Jeremiah continues.

“He cannot be destroyed,” Saint Cyril says. Life cannot be extinguished, because Christ is Life. “I am the Resurrection and the Life,” He said. “Why do you labor in vain? Why do you exhaust yourselves?” To labor is to toil. “Why do you labor in vain?” Why do you toil to no purpose? “And His name,” the prophet says, “shall no longer be remembered.”

Your counsel is futile. “His name abides in the Church before the sun,” says Psalm 71:17. “And Moses reveals that it was Life Himself Who was hung upon the wood,” and so forth. Whom are you trying to destroy, and whose name are you trying to erase? The name of Him Who is Life itself.

Next paragraph. “Moses enacted this type when he cruciformly raised the serpent, so that anyone bitten by the living serpents might look upon the bronze serpent and be saved through faith.” This calls for a special analysis, but we will not undertake it now, because it would take too long. Christ said: “As Moses lifted up the bronze serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” Pay attention to Saint Cyril’s words here: “Moses enacted this type when he cruciformly raised the serpent.” A type of what? Of the Crucifixion of the Son of God. And Moses placed the serpent upon a cross.

As I have told you, if we examined this properly, we would see that it was not merely a single pole; it truly was a cross, even though the sacred text of the Old Testament does not call it a cross, but says “upon wood.” Yet it was a cross, for how else could the bronze serpent have been fastened to that pole? It was therefore a type of the Cross. Those who looked upon the bronze serpent escaped the serpents—the vipers—in the wilderness; that is, they were not poisoned. What did this mean? Did the bronze serpent possess any power of its own? No. What was at work? Faith. For, as you see...

“looking upon the bronze serpent, he would be saved through faith.” He would be saved because he believed. What mattered, therefore, was faith. Now Saint Cyril says that the same applies here. The Son of Man will be crucified and lifted up upon the Cross, and whoever believes in Him will be saved. What does this mean? What did every believer see upon the Cross? What do we see upon the Cross today? A man hanging there. If you believe that He is the Son of God, you are saved. So it was then: if you believed that the bronze serpent was given for your healing, so that you would not perish from the serpents, why did it heal you? Simply because God had said so. Once again, you believe. Therefore, here...

What will save you is whom you believe the One upon the Cross to be. If you believe that He is the Son of God, the eternal God, then you will be saved. The serpent of old was a type of this. The bronze serpent itself proves that the object possessed no miraculous power. Later, because people were using it for sorcery—as I have mentioned before—Hezekiah took that bronze serpent and ground it to powder. He scattered the dust and destroyed it completely. He would have sinned if the serpent itself had possessed some power to heal. But the bronze serpent possessed nothing at all. It was faith in Him.

So here too, when you look at the Cross of Christ, what do you see? You see two pieces of wood. But if you believe that the incarnate Son of God was crucified upon those two pieces of wood, then you are saved. The demons also believe, if you will. Indeed, as the New Testament says, they do not merely believe; they also tremble. Yet the dreadful thing is that they make us human beings not only fail to tremble, but fail even to believe. And Saint Cyril continues: “So then, a bronze serpent, when raised upon a cross, saves; but the incarnate Son of God, when crucified, does not save?”

What he is saying is this: a bronze serpent saves human beings, but Jesus Christ, who was crucified, does not save? “Life always comes through wood.” What a beautiful phrase: “Life always comes through wood.” Life always comes through wood. And he gives the following example—actually, two examples. “In the days of Noah, life was preserved through a wooden ark.” This, then, is the first example. How were those eight people saved? Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their three wives. Apparently, they had no children yet, because it seems they married in haste at the last moment and entered the ark. They had children later; they did not enter the ark with children.

Those eight people were saved through wood. And what is Noah’s ark? It is a type of the Precious Cross. Then comes another example, another type: “Already in the days of Moses, when the sea beheld the form of the rod, it yielded before the one who struck it.” Moses is holding a rod. With this rod he performs all the miracles. God says to Moses, who was tending sheep—what could be more natural than for a shepherd to carry a wooden staff, a shepherd’s crook, whatever you wish to call it? God asks him, “What are you holding in your hand?”

“This,” he replies, “is my shepherd’s staff.” “With it you will perform the miracles.” And the great miracle, the greatest miracle—not the ten plagues, but the crossing of the Red Sea—was accomplished with that rod, with that wooden object. Do you know how Moses moved it? In the form of a cross over the waters—in the form of a cross. Does Holy Scripture say this? No. Then where do we get it from? You will see in a moment. All the hymnographers speak of it in the heirmoi: “Moses, tracing the Cross,” and so forth. “Moses, tracing the Cross.” How was the cross formed? Please picture it in your imagination.

Picture the Red Sea on a map. It is like an enclosed sea—as indeed it is enclosed—something like a great river, because it ends where Suez is today. The Hebrews, however, had gone considerably farther south. When Moses struck with his rod in a direction perpendicular to the sea, the water opened and became a wall, Scripture says, on the one side and on the other. He struck in this direction, perpendicular to the sea, and the sea opened. The people passed through. Then God told him, “Strike again with your rod.”

Two movements, two strokes. This time he strikes horizontally across the sea, thus forming a cross in relation to the first stroke—first in one direction, and then across it. When he strikes horizontally over the sea, the sea closes. Thus the sea opened and closed through the sign of the Precious Cross. And as Saint Gregory Palamas says—this is how it acted, and Saint Gregory gives many examples—“See how the divine uncreated energy of the Precious Cross was at work in the Old Testament.” Divine uncreated energy.

The wood and its shape are one thing; its divine uncreated energy is another. The shape is created, but the divine uncreated energy of the Precious Cross is uncreated. It is uncreated. The divine uncreated energy of the Precious Cross was at work and accomplished the miracle. The divine uncreated energy of the Precious Cross was also at work through the pole upon which the bronze serpent was raised. And the divine uncreated energy of the Precious Cross was at work when Moses stretched out his arms and the Hebrews prevailed over the Amalekites. And so on: everywhere we see this divine uncreated energy. Then Saint Cyril continues.

“The rod of Moses has power, but the Cross of the Savior is powerless?” The rod of Moses performs these miracles, yet the Cross of the Lord does nothing and has no power? But the one is the antitype, or type, while the other is the prototype—the prototype/antitype relationship. “For the sake of brevity, I pass over the many other types.” He says, “I leave aside the many types,” just as I too leave them aside, for the sake of proportion—that is, so that our discourse does not become endless. And indeed, my dear friends, Saint Cyril’s thirteenth catechetical lecture is very long. “In the days of Moses, wood made the water sweet; and from the side of Jesus, water flowed while He hung upon the wood.” How beautiful!

Once, when Moses and the people reached the waters of Marah, the people went to drink, but the waters were bitter—very bitter. It is an area with a great deal of mineral salt, and the waters are bitter. The people tried to drink, but it was impossible. Then God said to Moses, “Throw a piece of wood into the spring.” And the waters were made sweet. That is, they became wholesome. There was no bitterness in them at all. They became fine, cool water. Just throw in a piece of wood—simply cast it into the water. Did that wood possess some power of its own? It would be foolish for anyone to say, “Perhaps Moses knew of some special property belonging to a certain kind of wood.”

Perhaps, they might say, he had learned it from the wisdom of the Egyptians, who knew such secrets, and so he could perform deeds that were regarded as miracles even though they were not. That is what rationalists might claim. A few years ago, for example, an American rationalist went to conduct investigations on Mount Carmel. He wondered whether the Prophet Elijah—when he ordered water to be poured over the wood, saying, “Do it a second and a third time,” after which fire consumed the sacrifice and even the soil—might have known of some secret spring of petroleum. Yet petroleum, as we know, does not come out on a mountaintop. We find water on mountains, but not petroleum.

We dig very deep into the earth to find petroleum. So, this man claimed, Elijah must have known of some petroleum spring up there. His men supposedly brought him buckets filled not with water, but with petroleum. Some fire had been hidden nearby, and it consumed the sacrifice; and in the end Elijah’s sacrifice prevailed over the idolatrous sacrifice of the priests of Baal. This is what rationalism says. Do you hear how the rationalist thinks? A miracle sticks in his throat like a fishbone. So he went and conducted his investigations, spending several thousand dollars to discover where that petroleum spring might have been. And what came of it? He lost his dollars, he certainly did not become a saint, and I am left telling you his story.

Thus the water was made sweet when Moses threw in that piece of wood; and “from the side of Jesus, water flowed while He hung upon the wood.” From the side of Christ, when the soldier pierced Him with the spear, water flowed while He was upon the wood. We now come to the twenty-first paragraph.

“The first of the signs in the days of Moses was blood and water, and the last of all the signs of Jesus was the same. Moses first changed the rivers into blood, while Jesus, at the end, brought forth water together with blood from His side.” Notice how exceedingly attentive the Fathers were. Do you know what method they used when studying the sacred texts? “What method?” you may ask. Quite on my own, I have called it the method of Jericho. I believe I have told you about this method before. Have you heard it? Do you know how Jericho fell? It fell in the following way: at God’s command, the Hebrews went out each day and began to march...

The whole multitude of the people—two hundred thousand people—marched all the way around the city, outside the wall, of course, while the inhabitants of Jericho remained shut inside. They marched around it without anyone speaking. My dear friends, if you were ever to see a crowd moving along in complete silence, without knowing why no one was speaking, how would you feel? If you saw a multitude of two million people walking around a fortified city in absolute silence, what would you do? Imagine seeing someone walk around your house three times every day and then leave.

He says nothing at all. Every day he circles your house three times. You would be seized with terror and fear, thinking that he was casting a spell upon you—walking around and around, then leaving, returning to circle it again and then leaving. What a strange thing! “He is binding me,” we might say, “binding me invisibly.” For six days, my dear friends, the people marched around the city of Jericho once each day. On the seventh day they went around the city seven times, remaining silent for the first six circuits. The anxiety of the city’s inhabitants had reached its height. They must have said, “What a strange people! What are they doing to us out there?”

On the seventh circuit the people raised a great shout. Then the walls began to fall, leaving the city exposed. The people entered and took possession of it. We now take that event and make it into a method. Jericho, my dear friends, represents the texts—Holy Scripture and the prophets—whose meanings are protected by mighty fortifications. How are those meanings to be conquered? Through this method of attentive observation. I will look at the text today, and I will look at it tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and next year.

For five years, even twenty years, I will keep looking at it. I will read the text every day. At some point—I promise you—the fortifications fall. Then, with a shout of triumph, you enter the city of the text’s meaning, because you have discovered and understood what the Spirit of God had hidden there. This is the method. Follow it; it is of great value. This is what the Fathers do. They took the time to observe the texts, to read and reread them. Their insights are such that we say, “How did we fail to see that? How does Saint Cyril see it? Did he have different eyes from ours?”

He approached things in one way, while we approach them in another. Our age is hurried, and we are superficial people. We cast a glance and move on. We do not wrestle with the texts or lay siege to their meanings, and therefore those meanings never surrender themselves to us. Now let us return to the passage. What did Saint Cyril see? He says that the beginning of Moses’ miracles was blood and water. The first plague changed the water of the Nile River into blood. That was the first miracle. And the last miracle of Christ was the blood and water that flowed from His side. Blood and water: the first miracle of Moses and the last miracle of Jesus Christ.

Now listen to the interpretation he gives: “And in the case of Jesus, this was because of the two voices—the voice of the judge and the voices of those who cried out—or because of believers and unbelievers. For Pilate said, ‘I am innocent,’ and washed his hands with water; but those who cried out said, ‘His blood be upon us.’” This is the first interpretation Saint Cyril gives. Blood and water flowed from the side of Christ because there were two voices: first, the voice of the one who judged Christ.

That was Pilate, who washed his hands with water and said, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man.” The other voice was that of the Jews who cried out, “His blood be upon us”—may His blood fall upon us. Thus the one washes with water, while the others cry out for the blood to fall upon them. Do you see? What flowed was twofold in nature: blood and water. And there were likewise two kinds of voices, two groups. Saint Cyril adds that the one signifies believers and the other unbelievers. Pilate...

Pilate had already accepted that Jesus was innocent. He could not know anything more, nor could he ever have known who Jesus truly was. Yet he judged Him to be innocent. To that extent, then, he believed; he recognized what he saw. The others, however, did not believe. It is one twofold sign, revealing both the unbelievers and the believers. The Fathers who interpreted this passage gave another reason for it as well: since the saving power of Baptism is twofold in the Gospels—the first being bestowed through water upon those who receive illumination, and the second being granted to the holy martyrs during persecutions through their own blood—blood and water came forth from His saving side.

Thus confession of Christ, both in Baptism and in martyrdom, confirms the grace. Here too, he says, we have two conditions, two groups of people: those who are baptized with water, and those who are baptized with blood. There are those who had time to be baptized with water, and those who did not, but were baptized in their own blood. This is why, as you know, our Church believes in the baptism of blood. It is the baptism of martyrdom. It is well known that many martyrs suffered martyrdom without any other preparation.

For example, some executioners were flaying Saint Charalambos, whose feast we celebrate this coming Monday. They were tearing at him with iron claws. Yet this majestic elder faced the pain and martyrdom in a way that filled his executioners with awe, amazement, and fear. They saw that he did not curse them. Not only did he neither curse nor cry out; he did not even show any pain, and they saw a gentle smile upon his lips. His persecutors trembled and were filled with katanyxis, with compunction, and at that very moment they said, “We too believe.”

“We believe in the God of Charalambos.” At that very moment, the emperor who had ordered Saint Charalambos—who was a hundred years old—to be tortured gave the order for those men to be beheaded. Did they have time to be baptized? No. And yet, my dear friends, we commemorate them as martyrs. Yes, this was the sudden miracle of sudden faith: they were baptized in their own blood. This, then, is another reason why water and blood flowed forth: to show that there are two baptisms, the baptism of water and the baptism of blood. And there is yet another reason concerning His side.

Here is a third interpretation: “Woman, who was fashioned from a side, became the originator of sin. But Jesus came to grant forgiveness to men and women alike, and so He opened His side for the sake of women, that He might abolish sin.” There is another reason, he says: woman, who was formed from Adam’s side, became the originator of sin. But Jesus came and grants forgiveness to both men and women. This is why there are two kinds, water and blood, corresponding to men and women. He therefore opened His side for the sake of women, that He might abolish sin and show that He grants forgiveness.

He grants it to men and to women. Although woman came forth from Adam’s side and should have been watchful, Christ nevertheless grants forgiveness both for her and to her. Paragraph twenty-two: “And whoever searches will find still other reasons.” Whoever investigates, he says, will discover other explanations as well. “But let what has now been said suffice, both because time is short and so that the hearing may not become wearisome.” We could find still more, he says, but there is not enough time, and we do not want our listeners to become overwhelmed. So, he says, we shall stop here. “And yet one should never grow weary of hearing about the Master being crowned.”

No one should ever grow weary of hearing those things that concern the crowning of the Master, for all these things constitute the glory of Christ, especially here, upon this most holy Golgotha. Within the texts, one may sometimes discover unexpected details. When those texts were written, their authors could never have imagined that such details would provide later generations with evidence from which to draw historical conclusions—historical conclusions. And what does he say? Above all, he says, this applies to what happened here, upon this very Golgotha: “upon this most holy Golgotha.”

Saint Cyril points to Golgotha. Where was Golgotha? It had been enclosed within the Church of the Resurrection, which, as we know, was built around the year 333. By 350 Saint Cyril was already delivering his catechetical lectures; these were written down in 350. So he was inside the church built by Saint Helen when he gave these lectures. We know that both Golgotha and the tomb are contained within the church, and therefore he could point out the actual place to the catechumens: “There—this is Golgotha.” That is a very striking detail.

“Others only hear, but we both see and touch.” Others hear about Golgotha; we both see it and touch it. We are here in Greece today, and we hear about Golgotha. But the catechumens of that time, while listening to these very lectures, could see Golgotha, lay their hands upon it, and touch it. These are beautiful observations.

“Let no one grow weary.” His conclusion is this: no one should become weary if my discourse seems to go on at length. “Take up arms against the adversaries in defense of this Cross. Raise faith in the Cross as a trophy against those who contradict it. For whenever you are about to discuss the Cross of Christ with unbelievers...”

“First send forth with your hand the sign of the Cross of Christ, and the one who contradicts you will be silenced.” Notice this; it is very beautiful. When you are about to speak concerning Christ with those who oppose Him...

Do this: “First send forth with your hand the sign of the Cross of Christ.” Send it ahead of you; with your hand, send forth the sign of the Cross. Make the sign of the Cross over the matter, or cross yourself. Before entering into a discussion with someone, make the sign of the Cross. Send the sign of the precious Cross ahead of the conversation with your hand.

The Cross of Christ. Be certain, he says, that the enemy will be silenced. The enemy will have nothing more to say to you. Now you may say to me, “If this is all we retain from what you have told us tonight, then it is a fine method for silencing others.” Perhaps you do not realize that, if you think this way, you will be acting as though by magic. Of course, Christ would never desire His precious Cross to act magically. My dear friends, we must first know the theology of the Cross and then live it. The theology of the Cross is what I was speaking to you about during the questions. The theology of the Cross...

It is opposed to the theology of revolution and to political theology. If I live the theology of the Cross and speak about the theology of the Cross, then, if I make the sign of the Cross, my opponents and enemies will be silenced—but only then. The precious Cross does not act in the hands of people who do not live in this way. Otherwise the devil, or the enemy before us, will say what the demon said to the seven sons of Sceva in Ephesus, when they attempted to cast a demon out of a possessed man and it answered them.

They had invoked the name of Christ and the name of Paul. But the demon said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize; but who are you?” So let us not act as though by magic. Yet, as I explained to you, when I saw this verse, I sat down and reflected on it, and perhaps I was able to explain something our people do unconsciously. We go to answer the telephone when it rings. I have seen this myself; I have seen it. As we reach out to pick up the receiver, we make the sign of the precious Cross. We do not know what will come from the other end.

We do not know whose voice we will hear on the other end of the line or what we will be told. We may hear something terrible—news of an accident. Will we have the strength to endure hearing it? So we make the sign of the Cross. Or temptation to sin may arise; the caller may be someone seeking to draw us into sin. So we make the sign of the Cross, and we are delivered.

The enemy is silenced. There is something else as well. Although it concerns a greeting and perhaps does not belong here—what I am about to say may not really fit here—since it has come to mind, allow me to tell you. I have noticed that when someone who perhaps knows little about Church life sees a bishop or a priest and goes to kiss his hand, he first makes the sign of the Cross. You have probably seen this many times among people who, I repeat, do not know much about Church matters. Men and women do it almost instinctively. Sometimes we even say with a smile, “Why are you crossing yourself?” This has happened to me many times with simple people who came to greet me. But consider what these people are living out, perhaps without understanding it themselves. They are living a tradition, a tradition that passes through the very cells of Orthodox Christians, even though we neither understand nor consciously recognize it. A person approaches to greet you and first makes the sign of the Cross. Of course, when we cross ourselves as we pass a church, or when we do so here before greeting a priest...

It is a greeting. It is a greeting, and that greeting bears the form and meaning of the Cross. But it is also something more. Between myself, the one offering the greeting, and the person I am about to greet, I place the precious Cross. Do you understand? I place the precious Cross between us. And when the precious Cross stands between us, any evil intention or demonic energy is rendered powerless—at least when one of the two has a good intention. Even if the other does not, the demonic energy is rendered powerless.

Why? Because we place the precious Cross between us. We have made the sign of the Cross...

...in our dealings with other people. This is therefore very important in matters of faith, doctrine, morals, and even practical details. I had not planned to mention it just now, but I am telling you because it came to mind. The catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril are a small encyclopedia, a small Christian encyclopedia. They are exceedingly important. May people be found to translate and provide commentary on them.

If these sacred texts were given a fine Orthodox commentary, they would truly become a spiritual treasure for every believer. Anyone who kept such a book at home and studied it diligently could learn a great deal and make great spiritual progress. Let us continue. “For the angels glory in the Cross, saying, ‘We know whom you seek: Jesus who was crucified.’ But I ask you: Did the angel say, ‘I know whom you seek—my Master’?” You know, when the myrrh-bearing women went to the tomb, there was an angel—or two, according to one of the Evangelists. Since only one of them spoke, one Evangelist mentions just that one,

while another mentions two, because there were indeed two. This is no contradiction; that is why I am explaining it to you. One angel says: “Whom do you seek? Jesus who was crucified. I know whom you seek; it is He whom you seek. He is risen; He is not here.” “Come here, angel,” Saint Cyril says with his powerful dialectical skill—and you can see that his catechetical lectures are indeed dialectical. “Come here, O angel, and tell us: Why did you not say, ‘Whom do you seek? My Master, my Lord’? Why did you instead say, ‘Jesus who was crucified’?” The angel did not say, “Whom do you seek? My Master,” but rather, “the Crucified One.” What does this mean? It means that the angels glory in the Cross.

They glory in speaking of Jesus who was crucified. Why? “For the Cross is a crown, not a disgrace.” The Cross is a crown; it is not a dishonor. And so, while the angels glory in the Cross of Christ and speak openly of the Crucified One, we make the sign of the Cross beneath our jackets because we are ashamed. Do you not think that we should cease to be this way? Paragraph twenty-three: “Let us now return to the proof already given from the prophets. The Lord was crucified; you have received the testimonies, and you see the place of Golgotha.” The Lord, he says, was crucified.

You have heard the prophets and received their prophetic proofs and testimonies; you see the place of Golgotha. “You cry out in praise, declaring your assent. Take care that you do not deny Him in a time of persecution. Do not rejoice in the Cross only in a time of peace, but keep the same faith in a time of persecution as well. Do not be a friend of Jesus in a time of peace and His enemy in a time of war.” Take heed. Do you see how much you have received? You have proofs and prophetic voices, and you see the place itself. Do not deny Christ when persecution comes. Do not rejoice in the Precious Cross only in a time of peace, when the Cross is honored.

When everyone around you honors Christ, you honor Him too. But when persecution breaks out, take care not to deny Him. Do not be a friend of Jesus only in a time of peace. When war comes and His enemies fight against Him, remain His friend then as well, and do not become His enemy. Indeed, my beloved, much could be said on this point. “You now receive forgiveness of your sins and the gifts of the King’s spiritual grace. When war comes, fight courageously for your King.” You have received forgiveness of sins; you have received gifts from Christ. When war comes, fight with all your strength and courage for your King.

“Jesus, the Sinless One, was crucified for you; and will you not be crucified for Him who was crucified for you?” Christ was crucified—the sinless Jesus was crucified for you—and yet you hesitate to be crucified for the One who was crucified for you? “You are not doing Him a favor, for you have already received the favor beforehand.” You have already received grace from Christ. You do not bestow grace upon Him; He bestows grace upon you. “Rather, you are repaying the favor, fulfilling your debt to Him who was crucified for you on Golgotha.” When you are crucified for Christ and bear witness to Christ, you are not doing Him a favor; you are merely repaying the debt you owe.

He has given to you; He has given you salvation. Therefore, see to it that you become a confessor and a martyr, so that you may repay the debt for all that He has given you.

Ό,τι είχε διασωθεί σε μεταφράσεις, που η κυριοτάτη μετάφραση ήταν η μετάφραση των Εβδομήκοντα. Έτσι, έχοντας υπόψη κι άλλες εκδόσεις, κάνουν, ούτως ειπείν, μια κριτική έκδοση, για να μπορούν να πλησιάσουν ακριβέστερα και ακριβέστερα τα ιερά κείμενα. Ξέρετε δε ποιος έκανε την πιο σωστή και φοβερή δουλειά;

«μετὰ δύο ἡμέρας τὸ Πάσχα γίνεται, καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς τὸ σταυρωθῆναι», άρα «οὐκ ᾔδει;» Εκείνος ο οποίος έλεγε ότι μετά δύο ημέρες εγώ θα σταυρωθώ, θα παραδοθώ, Αυτός δεν το εγνώριζε; Μα το έλεγε. Συνεπώς, εδώ θέλει ακόμη για μια φορά να τονίσει ο Άγιος Κύριλος το εκούσιον του πάθους. Είναι πολύ σημαντικό αυτό το εκούσιον του πάθους. Ότι ο Χριστός δεν συνελήφθη γιατί δεν το ήθελε· το ήθελε. Δηλαδή, δεν βρέθηκε σε μία αδυναμία, αλλά το πάθος Του ήταν προσφορά. «Ἐγὼ δὲ ὡς ἀρνίον ἄκακον ἀγόμενον τοῦ θύεσθαι, οὐκ ἔγνων;» Ποιον αρνίον;

είπε στους μαθητάς Του: «Για μένα τι λένε οι άνθρωποι; Ποιος είμαι; Τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;» Και σε εκείνα τα προηγούμενα που σας είπα, ότι ψάχνουμε να βρούμε την ταυτότητα του Ιησού Χριστού, ακριβώς αυτό πάμε να απαντήσουμε: να απαντήσουμε στον Χριστό ποιος είναι. Και ο Απόστολος Πέτρος τι είπε; «Σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός, ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος». Αυτό πρέπει να πούμε, δηλαδή πρέπει να φτάσουμε αυτό να πούμε. Ενώ οι άνθρωποι τι είχαν; Ποικίλους λογισμούς. Ο φοβερότερος: «Είπε ότι είναι ο Υιός του Θεού», λέγανε οι σταυρωταί Του. «Εάν είναι Υιός του Θεού, ας κατέβει από το Σταυρό. Εάν ο Θεός Τον θέλει, ας Τον κατεβάσει από το Σταυρό, εφόσον έλεγε ότι είναι Υιός του Θεού». Είδατε εδώ;
