Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that Christ knowingly and freely journeyed to Jerusalem, foretold His Crucifixion, and accepted death to save the world from sin. Although Christ freely incorporated human rejection into His saving plan, Judas, Caiaphas, Annas, Pilate, the crowd, and the devil remained fully responsible for their choices. The Jewish Passover meal, with its consecrated lamb, unbroken bones, unleavened bread, and ritual cups, prefigured Christ’s sacrificial death and the cup of salvation.

We find ourselves, beloved, in the thirteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, Bishop of Jerusalem, at the sixth paragraph. This entire catechesis concerns the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, who was crucified and buried. And in the sixth paragraph the Holy Father tells us the following: “Do you wish to be convinced that He went willingly to His Passion? Robbers die unwillingly, as do those who do not know what awaits them.”

“But He foretold His Passion: ‘Behold, the Son of Man is being delivered up to be crucified.’ Do you know why He who loves mankind did not flee from death? So that the whole world might not perish in its sins. ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered up and crucified.’ And again, ‘He set His face to go to Jerusalem.’” Do you wish, he says, to be convinced that Jesus offered Himself voluntarily, that He gave Himself willingly and that His Passion was not involuntary? When someone of great importance is led, as though to martyrdom—in this case, to the Cross—against his will, this shows that he is a man, merely a man and nothing more. But when He willingly delivers Himself to the Crucifixion and to death, and not only delivers Himself willingly but also foretells that death—not only the death itself, but the manner of His death and even its details—then, of course, we are dealing with something altogether different from an ordinary man. And if this man

does not die for sins of His own, as a criminal does, but for the sins of the whole world, then He is the God-Man. And indeed, as the Holy Father says here, “Robbers die unwillingly, as do those who do not know”—those who do not know and who had no intention of dying meet death against their will. But Jesus foretold His Passion. This “foretelling” is prophecy. What did the Truth say? In Matthew 26:2 the Lord says to His disciples: “Behold, the Son of Man is being delivered up to be crucified.” Behold, He says, the Son of Man is being delivered up to be crucified. “Do you know why He who loves mankind did not flee from death?” Do you know why Jesus, who loves mankind, did not avoid death? “So that the whole world might not perish in its sins”—so that the entire world might not be lost in the ocean of its sins. This is why Jesus Christ, who loves mankind, died. Elsewhere He says: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered up.”

The same Evangelist records this, for the Lord repeatedly announced and prophesied His death beforehand to His disciples. Why? To show clearly that His death was voluntary, that His self-offering was voluntary. “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem”—behold, we are going to Jerusalem. The road was uphill; Jerusalem stood at an elevation, and that is why He says, “We are going up.” “And the Son of Man will be delivered up and crucified.” And again there is another testimony: “He set His face to go to Jerusalem.” In other words, He resolutely set His course.

“He set His face”—He set His course toward Jerusalem, as the Evangelist Luke tells us. And when the Apostle Peter, who had begun to understand something of what was happening, said to Him, “Lord, only a few days ago the Jews wanted to stone You. Do You want us to go there again? God be merciful to You, Lord! God be merciful to You! What are You saying?” he tried to prevent Him. Of course, we might call this a well-intentioned attempt by the disciple to restrain his Teacher. Yet it was just like Crito coming to help Socrates escape from prison and telling him, “You will

go to Boeotia or Thessaly, and there you will live well and no longer be in danger.” “No,” Socrates replies, “I will not leave; I will remain here.” In the same way, the Lord rebukes Peter and tells him plainly: “Get behind Me, Satan.” Why did He say to him, “Get behind Me, Satan”? You know why.

Thank you. Many interpreters say that He called the Apostle Peter “Satan.” But we could say something else: He was not addressing the Apostle Peter, but Satan, who had spoken through the tongue of the Apostle Peter. What does this mean? Pay attention and listen. The Gospel according to Matthew tells us that after His Baptism, Jesus “was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Yet when the Lord was led there, this does not mean that He went in order to experience temptation within Himself. There could be no question of an inward temptation.

We experience inward temptation within ourselves—logismoi, intrusive thoughts, and the like. And you know that inward temptation does not always come from the devil; it also comes, and comes chiefly, from our corrupted nature. The devil then comes to foster that temptation and fan it into flame, until it becomes a fire.

Being sinless, Christ had none of these things. There was no question of inward temptation. The tempter was external; he came from outside, and he was the devil. Christ did not go into the wilderness in order to be tempted or tested, but to defeat the devil there. Just as the devil approached our first ancestors in order to overthrow them, so now the New Adam goes to meet the overthrower, the devil, and to teach him a severe lesson: that he had done evil in overthrowing our first ancestors, Christ’s own creatures, the creatures of God. This is why He went there to meet the devil. And the temptations the devil brought against Him

were the same temptations he had presented to our first ancestors. What was the first temptation? You know: it concerned food. “Command these stones to become loaves of bread.” He did not say, “Command this stone,” but, “Command these stones to become loaves of bread.” This means excess, going beyond the satisfaction of the senses—not meeting a need, but gratifying a desire. It is what the Apostle Paul would later say: “Make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its desires.” For after the temptations, the Gospel according to Luke says that “angels ministered to Him.” Angels served Him.

This means that provision was made for His bodily needs. But the devil demanded excess—the gratification of desire. There is also the separate matter of Christ performing a miracle. This subject is very rich, but I do not wish to dwell on it, because I mention these things only in passing. So what was the first temptation? The gratification of the senses through food. What was the temptation of our first ancestors? Food. Eve reached out her hand and ate the fruit. But the New Adam does not stretch out His hand to turn the stones into bread, because “man shall not live by bread alone.” What drove Eve and Adam to taste the fruit? Vainglory and pride.

They thought, “We can make ourselves divine; we can attain theosis without God.” Then came the second temptation. The devil took the Lord and said to Him, “Throw Yourself down from the pinnacle of the Temple.” Why? Because in this way He would suffer no harm. “It is written,” the devil tells Him—it is written about You—that “He shall give His angels charge concerning You, to guard You, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.” You will suffer nothing; You will not stumble against a stone and be injured. Therefore, if You throw Yourself down from up there, nothing will happen to You. And the hundreds, if not thousands, of people in the courtyard—the crowds who filled the Temple courts every day to offer sacrifices and for other religious purposes—

would see Him descending without suffering any harm, just like a parachute coming down, and they would say, “How did this happen?” Jesus would then say, “I am the Messiah,” and everyone would believe. It would be an easy way to display His messianic dignity. But the Lord said, “You shall not tempt the Lord your God.” Our first ancestors, however, fell into the trap because they wanted to exalt themselves and become gods without following the lawful path. And what was that path? To remain faithful to God’s commandment. What was God’s commandment? You shall not eat this fruit. By remaining and persevering in God’s commandment, they would have attained theosis. Then came the third temptation. The devil said to Him, “Look, I will give You everything—all glory and all kingdoms.” Why? Because the devil himself sought glory and said, as the Prophet Isaiah tells us, “I will set up my throne opposite the Most High, among the clouds of heaven,” and so on. Adam, too, was ensnared into believing that he would conquer the whole earth. God had told him, “Have dominion over the earth.” God had indeed said this, but it was to be accomplished by the lawful path.

What is that path? Faith and obedience. Would they believe that if they ate, they would die? They did not believe it. And obedience meant doing what God had told them. Now the devil comes to tempt the Lord, the New Adam. After the devil says, “I will give You all these things if You fall down and worship me,” the Lord answers him. For in the end, please understand, our first ancestors worshipped the devil and not God. That is why creation was handed over to the devil’s rule. That is why creation came under demonic dominion. That is why mankind also came under demonic dominion. They worshipped the devil. And the Lord says, “Get behind Me, Satan! Begone!”

“And I will reveal to you who you truly are.” This passage is extraordinarily rich, my beloved, extraordinarily rich. Now, after the devil departed, the Gospel according to Luke adds a brief phrase: “until an opportune time.” The devil departed for a time. Then he returned; he returned during the hours of the Passion. He came to the garden of Gethsemane, and he came through the foremost of the disciples, Peter. This is why Peter said, “Lord, God be merciful to You! Do not go to Jerusalem.” And the Lord answered once again, just as He had before: “Get behind Me, Satan.”

Do you understand, then, my beloved, that the devil comes once more to tempt the Lord? In what way? Here we encounter something strange, something that at first sight may seem contradictory. But it is not. Who brought Jesus Christ to the Cross? The devil. Holy Scripture states clearly that the devil brought Christ to the Cross. It was not Annas or Caiaphas; they became instruments of Satan. Of course, they remain fully responsible, because they acted from the passion of envy and hatred. “They delivered Him up because of envy,” says the Evangelist John. And Paul says that they would not have crucified Him if they had known the Lord of Glory. Neither the rulers nor the devil knew who He truly was. Would the devil ever have dared to do this if he had known? So the devil leads Christ to the Cross. Do you want yet another prophetic testimony? God speaks to him—the Word of God, the One who would later become man, speaks to the devil. Where? In Paradise. He tells him, “You shall bruise His heel, but He shall crush your head.” You will bruise the heel of the woman’s seed. This means that He will be born of a Virgin, for a woman does not possess seed.

This means that the harm you inflict upon Him will be slight. Why will it be slight? Because He will rise again. But through His Resurrection, He will crush your head. You see, then, that the devil brings Christ to the Cross. But now you may point out the apparent contradiction: the devil is trying to prevent Christ from going to be crucified, and he is using Peter to tell Him not to go and die. How can both things be true? This is the very point. It appears contradictory, but, my beloved, it is not, if we understand that the devil, in his ignorance, is stumbling about in confusion. Let me give you an example. Judas

was, of course, a disciple of Christ. He endured all the hardships suffered by the disciples as they followed the Lord. Hardship and suffering—constantly traveling and journeying from place to place—is no small thing. It is truly difficult. How, then, did he come to betray the Lord and bring about His Crucifixion? How did he reach that point? Holy Scripture tells us that Judas loved money and that he delivered up the Lord out of avarice. But was avarice by itself enough to make him deliver up the Lord? Was it enough? It was the opening, the initial impulse, because the devil had put it into his heart.

For a long time, the devil had been cultivating the love of money within the disciple’s heart. For a long time. For example, when the Lord spoke to the people of Capernaum who wanted to make Him king, He said to His disciples, “Do you also wish to go away?” “No, Lord,” they replied, “You have the words of life.” I know that you are clean, He said, but not all of you. At this point the Evangelist John adds a note explaining that He meant Judas. The Lord meant Judas, because something was already at work within him. If we look carefully, we shall see this: beyond his avarice, Judas did not believe in Jesus Christ.

He did not believe. Although he loved money and aspired to become great—the Lord had said, “You will sit upon twelve thrones”—he also saw the Lord rejecting worldly glory. The people of Capernaum came and offered Him a wonderful opportunity to be proclaimed king, yet He refused. The disciple therefore fell into disappointment. In addition to his love of money—or because of it—he realized that his ambitious and avaricious desires would not be satisfied. He fell into this disappointment, and then, driven by his

Driven by his love of money, he says, “I am disappointed. The Teacher is not the one I believed Him to be. Is there not an opportunity here? Here is a chance for me to get thirty pieces of silver and bring the whole affair to an end.” So he goes and betrays Him. Do you know what this resembles? It is like Hitler, who began making soap from the prisoners in the Dachau camp. But then he thought more pragmatically and said, “Why should we make them—pardon me, not make soap of them, but kill them, kill them?” Then he thought, “Why should we only kill them? We gain nothing from that. Since we have no use for them, why not take their fat and make soap from it?” In somewhat the same way, my beloved, Judas is now moved by disappointment.

He wants to profit even from this final opportunity, to get money and gain something for himself. Is there any contradiction here, then? No, there is no contradiction. What is Judas’s state of mind? He wavers. One moment he is a disciple, and the next he is not. Is the Teacher what he thought He was, or is He not? But the devil also wavers. How does he waver? Listen: “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” The words “If You are the Son of God” have two aspects. The first is psychological: the devil seeks to overthrow the Lord by appealing to pride, so that He would—

The Lord could have answered proudly, “Of course I am the Son of God,” and, if I may use the expression, fallen into the trap just as the first-formed human beings did. But there is another aspect as well. At the Baptism, the devil heard, “This is My beloved Son.” Son—Son. Yet there are other persons in the course of history who are called sons. Here He is called the beloved Son. What kind of Son is He, and what relationship can there be between the One now being baptized, the voice, and God? I do not say God the Father, because the devil did not know the mystery of the Holy Trinity, just as the angels did not know it. What, then, could this relationship be? What kind of relationship was being revealed?

This is what the devil wants to test. He wavers in his knowledge. His words, “If You are the Son of God,” show that he does not know. Are You, or are You not? He casts out a sounding line to measure the depth, but he does not know. Thus, on the one hand, the devil wants the Lord put to death at all costs, because the Lord is his adversary and hateful to him. On the other hand, he does not know what the death of this adversary will mean. He incites the rulers to put the Lord to death, yet at the same time he also incites Peter to prevent the Lord from going—

to Jerusalem to be put to death. For the devil hears something that the disciples do not understand. “And on the third day He will rise,” the Lord would say. What does “He will rise” mean? The disciples did not pay attention to this. Their minds could not grasp it. Yet the rulers did pay attention, as did the devil. “We remember, sir,” they say to Pilate, “we remember that this deceiver said that on the third day He would rise.”

They do not believe that He will rise, but they remembered Christ’s words. “Give us permission, then, to go and seal the tomb,” and so forth. The devil hears the words “He will rise,” which the Lord speaks to His disciples.

He cannot know what this means and, on the one hand—

he tries to prevent the Lord from going to His death, so that He will not rise; yet on the other hand, the devil wants to crucify Him in order to satisfy his passion—his envy and hatred toward the person of Jesus Christ—and he makes the rulers of the people his instruments. The devil, then, wavers. And do you know what the Lord does? He remains silent. Why? He remains silent because He has His great plan to save humanity by crushing the devil through His Resurrection. The whole plan is this: “You deceived, and now you will be deceived. You, the devil, deceived the old Adam. I, the New Adam, confront you with My full human nature.” You see, His divine nature is not displayed in such a way that the devil could say—

“What could I, a creature, possibly have done against You, God?” No. Only the human nature is set before him, and the devil is defeated—deceived and defeated—by the New Adam, Jesus Christ.

All this shows that the Passion was voluntary. That is why, my beloved, I have explained these things in such detail. I do not know whether I have tired you, but I wanted to show you that the Passion was voluntary. He did not go because others forced Him to go; the Lord went because He willed to suffer. But then comes the familiar question: does this mean that the devil bears no responsibility? Do the people bear no responsibility? Do Caiaphas, Annas, Pilate, the crowd that cried out, and Judas bear no responsibility?

Their share of responsibility remains complete, because the Lord’s will took into account precisely the conduct of the people and of His enemies. Why? Because, my beloved, as I have told you before, God’s first will was not that His Son should suffer, but that He should become man and be received. What God’s plan would then have been, we do not know, except that through it we would all attain theosis, divinisation. But the people refused Him. “He came to His own,” it says, “and His own”—primarily the Jews—“did not receive Him.” Since they did not receive Him, the path of salvation, the path to theosis, was determined through their failure to receive Him, through their rejection. You reject Me, and you demonstrate that rejection. The culmination of rejection is death. You put Me to death because you reject Me.

Therefore, you bear full responsibility. Saint Cyril continues: “And do you wish to know clearly that the Cross is glory for Jesus? Listen to Him speaking, and not to me. Judas was betraying Him, having become ungrateful toward the Master of the house.” Listen to the Word of God, to the Gospel, and not to me, says Saint Cyril. Judas, the ungrateful Judas, betrays the Master of the house. “Having only just risen from the table and drunk from the cup of blessing, instead of drinking the saving draught, he sheds righteous blood.”

After drinking from the cup of blessing, instead of drinking from the cup of salvation—I will explain this to you—he ended by shedding innocent blood, the blood of a righteous man. “He who ate my bread has lifted up his heel against me,” says Psalm 40, verse 10. That is, the one who ate bread with me “has lifted up his heel against me.” To lift up the heel means to raise my foot and strike with my heel.

The expression means a mighty kick: I raised my foot and delivered a great, forceful blow. “Only just now those hands were receiving the blessings.” Those very hands had just received Christ’s blessings when He said, “Distribute this bread among yourselves,” and “only just now, through the silver pieces of betrayal, he was preparing His death.” At that very moment, through the silver pieces paid for the betrayal, he was arranging His death. “And though exposed and hearing the words, ‘You have said it,’ he went out again.” Judas had asked, “Is it I, Lord?” What hypocrisy! What a dreadful thing—to have someone betray me.

The disciples are astonished and ask, “Is it I?” Yes, “Is it I? Is it I?” There are twelve of them, and Judas also says, “Is it I, Lord?” The Lord tells him, “You have said it.” It is as you have said. Notice, however, that this is an indirect answer. “He went out again”; he departed. Why had Jesus said these things? When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” The hour has arrived for the Son of Man to be glorified. “Do you see how He regarded the Cross as His own glory?” Do you see that He knew the Cross to be His own glory? Saint Cyril then says, “Isaiah was sawn in two and was not ashamed. Shall Christ be ashamed when He dies for the world?” Isaiah was placed upside down and sawn in two with a wooden saw, yet he was not ashamed. Shall Christ, who dies for the whole world, be ashamed? “Now the Son of Man has been glorified.” Now the Son of Man has been glorified. “Not that He did not possess glory before.” It is not that He lacked glory beforehand. “For He was glorified with the glory He possessed before the foundation of the world,” because He always possessed that glory, before creation came into being. “But as God He was always glorified; now He was glorified by wearing the crown of patient endurance.”

As God He was always glorified; as man He was now glorified by wearing the crown of patient endurance. “He did not surrender His life under compulsion, nor was He taken by a murderer’s violence, nor was He slain as one condemned for murder, but voluntarily.” He gave Himself willingly. Listen to what He says: “I have authority to lay down My life, and I have authority to take it up again.” I have authority to lay down My life—for here “soul” means “life”—and I have authority to take My life back again whenever I will.

Let us remain with this passage and consider a few points. One thing may have struck you, and perhaps you are learning it for the first time, unless you have read specialized works. Saint Cyril says that Judas had “only just risen from the table.” This does not directly serve our subject, of course, but it is a brief digression. Judas had only just left the table after drinking from the cup of blessing, instead of drinking the draught—the drink—of salvation. Saint Cyril distinguishes the cup of blessing from the draught, meaning that which is drunk.

The draught of salvation. What does this refer to? It refers to two cups. Perhaps you did not know this. We could have learned and known it if we knew how the Jewish Passover was celebrated. How many cups could be passed around during that meal, the Passover supper? They did not drink whenever they pleased. At any other meal, the Jews could drink as much wine as they wished, even to the point of drunkenness, if you like. But the Passover table was a ritual meal. It was not like our Easter table today. We take as many lambs as we want and roast them however we want.

We break their bones however we please, with axes, cleavers, and large butcher’s knives. It was not so then.

There was to be only one lamb for each family. That lamb had to be slaughtered and roasted directly over the fire—not boiled, but roasted. When the lamb was slaughtered and then eaten, not one of its bones was to be broken. “Not one of His bones shall be broken,” because the archetypal Lamb upon the Cross would have none of His bones broken. That is why this supper was ritual in character.

The slaughter of the animal had to begin before sunset on the eve of the feast. The cooking also had to be completed before sunset. These sheep were slaughtered in the Temple by the priests, and they had to be roasted before the sun went down, because then the next day began, the great day of Passover, when the work of roasting was not permitted. But throughout the night they had to eat the meat, finishing it by morning. All of it had to be eaten.

It was a sacred offering, a sacred sacrificial victim. Suppose some meat remained—for example, if a family consisted of only two people, how could they eat a whole lamb by morning? Any meat left over, together with the bones, had to be burned in the fire; the meat could not simply be thrown away. Under no circumstances could it be given to a guest unless that guest was a proselyte. Why all these precautions—or rather, not precautions, but requirements? And I have not even mentioned the bread, which had to be unleavened.

Nor will I dwell on the fact that every loaf made with leaven had to be completely removed, so that no leavened bread—bread made with sourdough—remained in any cupboard. Nor will I speak of the bitter herbs. Beyond all this, there was a sacred order to the meal. At a certain point the master of the house, the host, blessed the first cup, and every member of the family had to drink from that same cup. Then came a second cup and a third, eventually as many as seven cups. But you should understand that these were later additions. This seventh cup, in particular, was added over time as part of a tradition, which is always liable to alteration.

That is the point. The original tradition had chiefly two cups. The first was called the cup of blessing. And here in Luke I find the following words—listen: the Lord took the cup and said, “I assure you, I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine”—the fruit of the vine means wine, that is, the wine now in this cup—“I assure you, I shall not drink until the Kingdom of God comes.” What does it mean that He would not drink until the Kingdom of God came? This was not the cup of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.

It was the cup of blessing, the first cup. Over this cup the Lord did not say, “This is My Body”—forgive me—“This is My Blood.” It was therefore the passing around of the first cup, and He meant that He would drink wine with them again—not as the Holy Eucharist, but simply as wine.

And this did happen, as the Apostle Peter tells us in the Acts of the Apostles. How much there is for us to discuss in Acts! Shall we keep this book before us? It could occupy us for fifty years—fifty years, my dear friends; I tell you truly. In one of his addresses, the Apostle Peter says, “We ate and drank with Him.”

We ate with Him and drank with Him. What did they drink with Him? Water, certainly, and wine. I need not even mention what the holy Evangelists tell us: when they doubted whether this was truly Jesus and wondered whether He might be a ghost, He said, “Give Me something to eat,” and He ate fish and honey, and so forth. But the Apostle Peter says, “We ate with Him and drank with Him.” What did they drink—wine? Yes. But by then the Kingdom of God had come upon the earth. The Church is the Kingdom of God. And how was it established? The Kingdom of God was established through the Resurrection of Christ and the crushing of Satan, here upon the earth. So this was an ordinary cup. And when I say ordinary, I mean

that it was not the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist; it was called the cup of blessing. What is especially important is that the Evangelist Luke himself mentions both cups. If one Evangelist had written only about the cup of blessing and another had written about the other cup, we might have confused them and thought they were the same cup. But no—the same Evangelist, Luke, mentions two cups. Regarding the first cup, the cup of blessing—Luke does not call it that, but we know the name from Jewish tradition, just as Saint Cyril calls it here, following Jewish tradition—the Lord says, “I shall not drink of this wine until the Kingdom of God comes.” Then, later, after they had eaten, He took the cup—they had filled the cup with wine again, we might say—and said, “Take

the cup; this is My Blood of the New Testament.” The Lord takes a second cup—He does so a second time. And so Saint Cyril says here that Judas drank from the cup of blessing, but did not drink from the drink of salvation, that is, from the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Do you understand? Instead, he hurried away—hurried away to betray the Lord and to shed the Lord’s innocent Blood.

When Judas had departed, Christ said, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I want to dwell on this phrase.

Let me clarify a similar phrase, also found in the Evangelist John. The Lord spoke this present phrase at the Mystical Supper, while He spoke the other in Jerusalem, somewhere in the Temple courts or perhaps along the road. Some Greeks, it says, had come up for the feast and asked Philip to present them to Jesus Christ. When Philip told Him, “Some Greeks are asking for You,” the Lord said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified.” Now the Son of Man has been glorified. We Greeks then say, “You see? You see? Please, pay attention to these notes. You see? The Lord said of us that the Son of Man had now been glorified, because we Greeks would glorify Christ by accepting His preaching and His Gospel.” And there is no denying, my dear friends, that the Lord granted us glory because we accepted His Gospel. What He will do now that we are casting His Gospel out of our homeland is His concern. But I will tell you this alone: for the Jews, everyone who was not Jewish was called a Greek. Even Jews themselves might be included—not exactly as Greeks, but as Hellenistic Jews, meaning Jews of the Diaspora

who spoke the Greek language. Everyone who was not Jewish was called a Greek. Therefore, these were not necessarily Greeks in the sense of people from mainland Greece. They might have been Syrians, Egyptians, or others; I do not know. But they spoke Greek, were not Jews, and were therefore called Greeks. These words, then, do not refer specifically to us Greeks. Why did the Lord say, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified”? Because, my dear friends, the Lord was referring to the Cross. He was referring to the Cross. If you look at the sacred text of the Gospel, you will see that He is speaking neither about the Greeks nor about people in general, but about the Cross.

And so Saint Cyril presents this saying to us here. I come before you and say, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified.” Forgive me, forgive me: “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” “Do you see how He regards the Cross as His own glory?” He knows the Cross to be His own glory. What does this mean exactly? What is the glory that belongs to Christ? Christ’s glory lies in fulfilling the will of the heavenly Father. What did the Lord say in His prayer? The Lord said, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me.” What cup? The cup of the Cross. As we know, the word “cup” means a trial.

Therefore, He was saying: let this trial pass from Me; let Me not taste it or undergo it. And in this case, the trial is the Cross. “Not as I will, but as You will.” Thus, the Crucifixion of His Son was the will of the heavenly Father. Where, then, is the glory of Christ? Christ’s glory is in His obedience, in the fact that He fulfilled the will of the heavenly Father. And where else is His glory? In the fact that His obedience was directed toward the salvation of mankind. As I have told you before—and I was reminded of him only recently—consider Codrus the king. Where was his glory? In the fact that, in accordance with the oracle, he was put to death.

The enemies would withdraw and the siege of Athens would be lifted if the king were killed. So he put on a peasant’s clothing and went to gather wood in the enemy camp. The enemies ordered him to leave, but he deliberately provoked them and said, “I will not go.” They became angry and killed him. Then they learned that he was the king. Since they too knew the oracle of Delphi, they lifted the siege, saying, “There is no point continuing, since our cause is lost.” This was glory for Codrus, the king of Athens. It was glory because he died for his city, for his homeland. Here, Christ dies for all mankind.

Is this, then, not glory? This is why the Cross of Christ is the glory of Christ. And what is especially important is that we always hold the sign of the Cross as a symbol of victory and glory. Wherever the Cross is displayed, it is a symbol of victory and glory. Moreover, do not forget that when Christ comes again at His Second Coming, He will be preceded, it says, by the sign of the Son of Man. That sign—spoken of in the Apocalypse and in the Gospels—will be none other than the Cross of Christ. Why will the Cross come as the herald of Christ? If it were not a sign of glory,

but a sign of shame and disgrace, how could the Cross appear before the Lord when He comes in all His glory? As He Himself says, “When the Son of Man comes upon the throne of glory,” accompanied by all the angels of His creation. How could the Cross be displayed if it were not a symbol of glory but a symbol of dishonor? Where is the glory? In this: I died for you. Where is the glory? I died for you because I loved you. Where, then, is the glory? In the love of Jesus. Where is the glory? In the sacrifice of Jesus. That is where His glory lies. This is why He says, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”

His glory is in His Resurrection, for how could He have risen if He had not first died?

Here Saint Cyril makes a distinction. He says that this glory does not refer to Christ’s divine nature, but to His human nature. Why? Because Christ was always glorified. He is the glory of God; He is the eternal God. His is the glory that He possessed before the foundation of the world. “My Father,” He says, “give Me the glory that I had before the foundation of the world.” And He always possessed it. Where, then, and to what was this glory to be given? It was to be given also to His human nature. “Glorify Me, as I have glorified You.” But when the Son glorifies His Father, does He add anything to the Father’s glory? Clearly not. Or when the Son now asks for glory, is He asking for glory to be added to His divinity? Clearly not.

Glory, in the case of the Father, means that creation acknowledges Him as God; and in the case of the Son, it means the acknowledgment that, out of love, He also became perfect man. Therefore, this glory refers to His human nature. But you may ask: was not that body already divinized when it was taken from the womb of the Theotokos? Of course it was! And how was this shown? It was shown on Mount Tabor. His body did not receive any additional glory; it was already glorified. Why, then, does the Son now ask to be glorified? “Give Me,” He says, “the glory.” What glory, and where? He already possessed it; even in His human nature, the Son possessed that glory. So what does this mean?

It means that this glory was to be made manifest to mankind. Why? Because on Tabor He said to His three disciples, “You shall say nothing.” Why? For many reasons, but also because the glory of the Cross first had to come, and then His glory would be revealed. It would be revealed, not increased. This glory would be revealed to mankind. Saint Cyril continues: “He did not relinquish His life under compulsion, nor was He slain by the ordinary course of mortal life, but voluntarily.” Listen to what He says: “I have authority to lay down My life, and I have authority to take it up again.” When did Christ die upon the Cross?

Someone might say, judging by biology, that Jesus gave up His spirit when all the blood had drained from His body and He was utterly exhausted. That is wrong! Christ did not die upon the Cross as an ordinary person dies when his biological end arrives—when the heart stops, or some other event causes death. Christ did not die upon the Cross merely through biological causes. Christ died at the moment He Himself willed, and He took back His life at the moment He Himself willed. What does this mean? Can any human being lay down his life and take it up again whenever he wishes? That is impossible, utterly impossible.

Behind His humanity is His divinity—not the Father, but Christ Himself. For He did not say, “The Father will give Me back My life.” He said, “I lay down My life, and I take it up again. I Myself.” This means, then, that Christ raises Himself from the dead. You may say that there are other passages of Holy Scripture which state that the Father raised the Son. Does not First Corinthians, chapter six, say that God the Father raised Jesus and will also raise us by His power? These different expressions convey one truth: the Resurrection is accomplished by the Holy Trinity—by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They also express that God is consubstantial, of one essence. Yes, whether Christ says, “I lay down My life, and I…”

“…take it up again,” or whether this is said of the Son, the Father, or the Holy Spirit, it is the same. We see, then, that Christ is God. To help you understand this, let me remind you that in the history of the Church there have been certain Saints who, for a particular reason, postponed their death. Then they prayed and entreated God, saying, “Lord, take me now,” and they died immediately. If this happened with Saints, how much more can the Son of God, who is Himself God, lay down His life and take it up again in His Resurrection? His Passion was voluntary. That is all, my dear friends, for this evening.

Μπορούσε ο Κύριος εγωιστικά να πει, εγωιστικά να πει, «Και βεβαίως είμαι Υιός του Θεού», και, ας μου επιτραπεί η φράση, να την πατήσει, όπως την πάτησαν οι πρωτόπλαστοι. Είναι όμως και η άλλη θέση. Ο διάβολος άκουσε στην Βάπτισιν, «Αυτός είναι ο Υιός μου ο αγαπητός». Υιός, Υιός. Ή, όμως, είναι κι άλλα πρόσωπα στην ιστορία. Εδώ είναι Υιός Αγαπητός. Τι είδους Υιός να είναι αυτός και ποια σχέση πρέπει να υπάρχει ανάμεσα σε αυτόν τον βαπτιζόμενο τώρα, με την φωνή, με τον Θεό; Όχι τον Θεό Πατέρα, γιατί αγνοεί το Τριαδικόν ο διάβολος, όπως και οι άγγελοι το αγνοούσαν. Ποια σχέση πρέπει να υπάρχει; Άρα, για ποια σχέση;

Αυτά δείχνουν το εκούσιον του πάθους. Γι’ αυτό, αγαπητοί μου, σας είπα με τόσες λεπτομέρειες όλα αυτά. Δεν ξέρω αν σας κούρασα, αλλά για να σας δείξω το εκούσιον του πάθους. Δεν πήγε γιατί τον πήγανε· γιατί ήθελε ο Κύριος να πάθει. Αν υπάρχει απορία, αυτή η συνηθισμένη απορία: τότε δεν έχει ευθύνη ο διάβολος; Δεν έχουν ευθύνη οι άνθρωποι; Δεν έχει ευθύνη ο Καϊάφας, ο Άννας, ο Πιλάτος, ο όχλος που φώναζε, ο Ιούδας;

Στην Ανάστασή Του είναι η δόξα, διότι πώς θα ανασταίνετο εάν δεν πέθαινε;

Η δόξα, εις μεν τον Πατέρα, αναγνώριση της κτίσεως ότι είναι ο Θεός, εις δε τον Υιόν, η αναγνώριση ότι έγινε και τέλειος άνθρωπος από αγάπη. Συνεπώς, η δόξα αναφέρεται εις την ανθρωπίνη φύση. Θα μου πείτε όμως το εξής: εκείνο το σώμα δεν ήταν θεωμένο όταν ελήφθη από τα σπλάχνα της Θεοτόκου; Μα βέβαια! Και πώς δείχθηκε αυτό; Εδείχθη αυτό στο όρος Θαβώρ. Δεν πήρε πρόσθετη δόξα, ήτο δοξασμένο το σώμα. Πώς λοιπόν τώρα ζητάει ο Υιός να δοξαστεί; «Δώσ' μου», λέει, «τη δόξα». Ποια δόξα; Πού; Αφού την είχε, και στην ανθρωπίνη φύση είχε τη δόξα ο Υιός. Τι σημαίνει αυτό;

Να γίνει φανερή από τους ανθρώπους. Αυτό σήμαινε. Γιατί; Διότι στο Θαβώρ λέει στους τρεις μαθητάς Του: «Δεν θα πείτε τίποτε». Γιατί; Για πολλούς λόγους. Αλλά και διότι έπρεπε να έρθει η δόξα του Σταυρού και τότε θα απεκαλύπτετο η δόξα. Απεκαλύπτετο, δεν θα προσετίθετο. Θα απεκαλύπτετο αυτή η δόξα εις τους ανθρώπους. Και συνεχίζει και λέγει: «Ουκ αναγκαστώς αφήκε την ζωήν, ουδέ βιοσφαγώς ανηρέθη, αλλ' εκουσίως». Άκουσε τι λέγει: «Έχω εξουσία να θέσω τη ζωή μου, να την καταθέσω, και έχω εξουσία πάλι να την πάρω». Πότε πέθανε ο Χριστός επί του Σταυρού;
