Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that the Cross saves because the crucified Jesus is not merely human but the incarnate Son of God. Accounts of exorcism and failed spiritualist séances illustrate the lecture’s warning against occult practices and its claim that demons retreat before the faithful use of the Cross. Against Docetism, Saint Cyril insists that Christ truly became incarnate, truly suffered and died for humanity, and therefore accomplished a real redemption.

Last time, as you may remember, still following the Thirteenth Catechesis of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, we examined this very important point in the third paragraph: that the message of the Cross is “a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles, but salvation to us.” To the Jews, the Cross is a stumbling block; to the idolaters, it is foolishness; but to us, it is salvation. We spent the entire session examining this subject. Saint Cyril then goes on to say: “For He who died on our behalf was not a mere man, but the Son of God, God made man.”
This is because, as we have said, the one who was dying on behalf of others was not a mere man. He was the Son of God—the Son of God, God who became man. Saint Cyril now presents his arguments and says:
The blood of sacrificial animals—in this case, the blood of a sheep, of a lamb—was offered for the forgiveness of sins. And there was also the blood of the sheep, the lamb, which in the time of Moses was placed on the lintels and doorposts in Egypt at God’s command. When the destroying angel passed through and killed every firstborn of the Egyptians, he did not touch the firstborn of the Jews—the Hebrews, forgive me—precisely because the blood of the sacrificed lamb was the sign that they were not to be harmed.
How much more, then, could the blood of the prototype save—the Blood of Christ—since those things were antitypes? How much more powerful must His Blood be? Saint Cyril gives a beautiful argument here; listen carefully: “If anyone doubts the power of the Crucified One, let him question the demons. If anyone does not believe the words, let him believe what can be seen. Many throughout the world have been crucified, yet the demons fear none of them.” The word means “they fear.” “But when they merely see the sign of the Cross of Christ, who was crucified for us, the demons are afraid, because the others died for their own sins, whereas He died for the sins of others. For He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth.” Do you not believe that the Blood of Christ drives evil away? Do you not believe that the Blood of Christ brings redemption? Saint Cyril called it a power that drives evil away: it repels evil and overthrows the dominion of Satan. The proof is that the demons fear the Blood of Christ. They fear the Cross upon which the Blood of Christ was shed, and it is
the Cross that drives the demons away. In other words, it makes them withdraw. The demons themselves confess this. That is why Saint Cyril says, “Let him question the demons,” speaking of anyone who doubts the power of the Crucified One. At this point, my dear friends, allow me to speak—not of the miracles that have always occurred throughout history, that occur in our own time, and that will always occur in the name of Christ crucified upon the Cross, causing the demons to flee. The Cross of Christ puts the demons to flight. We must never forget this. Yet I have told you something else as well, because, as far as I am able, I try to answer your questions before you even ask them. You may perhaps say to me: How is it that sorcerers use the sign of the Cross while performing their magic—that is, while making use of demonic power? I have explained this before, but I will say it again. This is what is called the imprisoned cross. What does that mean? It is well known that Freemasons, as well as sorcerers, use the cross. But theirs is an imprisoned cross, a captive cross. Its symbol is the sign of the cross enclosed within a triangle.
What does this mean? The triangle is the symbol of the Freemasons, while the cross is the symbol of Christianity. It is meant to signify: “We have enclosed, imprisoned, and confined the cross”—that is, the power of God. You may ask: Can such a thing really happen? Does God allow the power of the Precious Cross to be confined and imprisoned while the demons dance around it? I answer: yes—as a punishment for those who do not live according to the Cross of Christ, who do not live a cruciform life but follow a falsified Gospel. For such people, the Cross does not possess the power revealed in the Gospel. When these people go to the doors of the Freemasons, sorcerers, and the like, the Precious Cross truly does not act, as a punishment upon them. God does not drive the demons away because they have not believed the content of the message—the preaching—of the Precious Cross, and they do not live a cruciform life. But if, on the contrary, they do live a cruciform life, then it does not matter what symbols are enclosed within triangles or anything else. Even if all the demons and every dark power of Hades were brought up from below
to unite and wage war against the Precious Cross, they would accomplish nothing. Know this well. Christ said, “And the gates of Hades shall not prevail against her”—against the Church, which is the guardian and keeper of the Cross of Christ. That is the difference, and we must always be attentive to it. Let me give you a small, familiar, practical example. We say that the Cross is the guardian of the whole world and the guardian of my life. Very well. I wear the Cross around my neck. I have the Precious Cross in my car. I have the Precious Cross in my home. Yet I have an accident. Why did this happen to me? Did the Precious Cross not protect me?
If we examine the matter, we may find that it happened because we did not truly believe in the profound meaning of Christ’s sacrifice upon the Cross. Our lives, moreover, are not cruciform. Go to the beaches in summer and look at the people bathing there. How many of them are wearing a cross? And when they are dressed, you will see that many—especially the men—have their shirts open down to the navel, forgive me, in order to display their manliness, as you understand, while the Precious Cross hangs high upon their chest. Sometimes it is even a gold cross on a gold chain. It has become merely an ornament.
At that beach they may have committed fornication or adultery. And even if they committed no outward act, they went there, they looked, they allowed themselves to be looked at, and their souls were filled with filth. They therefore do not live according to the cruciform spirit of the Gospel, which says, “Turn my eyes away from beholding vanity,” as we read in Psalm 119. How, then, can I expect the power of the Precious Cross to act? It will not act. What happens instead? So to speak, the Cross becomes imprisoned for me. God permits the power of the Precious Cross not to act, while Satan’s power acts and brings evil upon me. I do not know whether we have understood this. But I would like to dwell on one further point.
Saint Cyril says, “Let him question the demons.” These demons, speaking through the mouths of the demon-possessed, say terrifying things. Consider what happens when the relic of a Saint is brought near. I am not speaking now of the Precious Cross, but of what I am about to describe. Why does this happen? The relics may be those of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, Saint Dionysios, Saint Gerasimos, Saint Spyridon, Saint John the Russian, and so forth—the Holy Relics of Saints whose names are well known. When the demon-possessed person is brought near the Saint’s relic, or the Holy Relics are placed upon him, we hear the poor afflicted person cry out:
“You are burning me! You are burning me! You have burned me!” And do you know what the demons call these Saints? They call them “burners.” I do not know whether you have heard this expression. What, according to the demons, is Saint Nektarios of Aegina? A “burner”—someone before whom the demons are burned. What does it mean that the demons are burned? Pay close attention. I spoke of the Holy Relics; I did not mention the Cross. You may ask whether I am straying from the subject or taking it too far. Listen carefully: I am not straying at all. Do you know why the Saints are holy? Because they lived according to the cruciform spirit of the Gospel. For this reason, the Precious Cross acts through their Holy Relics.
They themselves lived according to the cruciform spirit of the Gospel. Do you see how the power of God acts? Even when the Precious Cross is not visibly present, it is mystically present within the Holy Relics. Yes, this is why the Holy Relics so often work miracles. Does the Cross work miracles? It is the One crucified upon the Cross who works miracles—Jesus Christ. He is the Wonderworker. Do you see how, through theological understanding, we can discern the meaning of all these things? I ask you to view them in this way. But it is not only here that the demons confess the power of the Cross, the power of Christ.
When the Holy Relics are brought forth, the demons flee. They cry out, curse, protest, throw the poor demon-possessed person to the ground, and cause him to foam and convulse. Remember that poor child whose father brought him to Christ when the Lord came down from Mount Tabor. The Lord said to the father, in effect, “It is not a question of whether I can do it, but whether you believe.” And He said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I bear with you? How long shall I be with you?” I will not interpret these words of the Lord now. They show that people lack faith and do not draw near to Him. When Christ commanded the devil to leave the child, and the command was heard—not by the child, but by the
devil—the devil threw the child to the ground. The child convulsed there and thrashed about so violently that many said he was dead. After writhing on the ground, he lay completely still. He neither spoke nor made a sound nor breathed—nothing at all.
Many said, “The child is dead.” But he was not dead. Christ raised him to his feet. Christ did not perform a resurrection, because the child had not died; he only appeared to be dead. He had not died—I say it again. Christ did not raise him from the dead; He lifted him up. Why had this happened? It was the final convulsion of Satan’s malice. If such a thing occurred then in the presence of Christ, all the more can it also occur before the Saints and their Holy Relics. When a demon-possessed person is brought to them, he foams and convulses. What do all these things reveal? That the power of the Cross is terrifying to the demons and drives them away. Saint Cyril says that many people have been crucified, but their cross is not the Cross of Christ. It is the cross of the thieves—the various criminals who have been crucified throughout history. Ultimately, my dear friends, however bold it may sound, I would say that sorcerers, Freemasons, or indeed any nominal believer who does not believe in the power of Christ’s Cross does not, in reality, make use of the Cross of Christ.
I am deliberately drawing a distinction here: what such people use is the cross of the criminals who have been crucified as offenders against society. But those crosses work no miracles. We must possess the Cross of Christ. Notice one more thing, a final point. One place where we can see the power of the Cross of Christ—where the demons, when questioned, confess it—is spiritualism. You know that spiritualism is, we might say, a negative manifestation of the presence of the demons and of their fear of the Cross of Christ. You know this. You know what spiritualism is. And unfortunately, as I have told you before,
it is very fashionable today. And among whom especially, do you think? Among students. You know that schoolchildren, both younger and older, as well as university students, have lately become involved in spiritualism. It seems our young people must pass through every stage of sin and taste every flavor of evil. We go from cigarettes to drugs, from drugs to still worse things—to fornication and drunkenness. It seems we must also try spiritualism. You know that, supposedly for amusement, young people practice spiritualism in their homes or wherever they happen to gather. And of course, it is well known that they also engage in reading coffee grounds from the cup.
They practice coffee-ground divination, both young and old. But they also engage in spiritualism itself, using the familiar séance table, which they question. It is a terrifying thing—truly terrifying. There you can see the power of Satan acting in an astonishing way. All those who are present come under Satan’s influence. But suppose the Precious Cross were brought in by a genuine believer—for it is not merely the Cross as an object that matters, but the faith of the person who believes in the Precious Cross. Then no spiritualistic phenomenon would appear at all.
Let me tell you of an incident that has been mentioned before and has also been published. Perhaps you have read about it. It happened many years ago. Once, in Patras, a spiritualist came to give a public demonstration in a cinema theater. Tickets were sold so that people could attend and watch his experiments. You know that, in earlier times—and perhaps this still happens, I do not know—such people would even go into schools, unfortunately, and into the army. They would ask permission, naturally receiving payment, to give demonstrations to soldiers and schoolchildren.
It was a demonic performance. If certain things in this country functioned as they should, such people would never have been permitted to appear in schools or before soldiers. So there in Patras, as I said, the cinema theater had been rented, tickets had been sold, and people came. Some of those who attended were young boys at the time; naturally, they are grown men now, for this happened many years ago. They placed a cross beneath the small table on the stage where the experiments were to take place. They fastened the cross to its underside. At the appointed hour, the cinema theater was full...
There is also curiosity. Take care: this kind of curiosity is demonic and is not permitted. We must never attend a spiritualist séance, as it is called. We must never go. So the man tries to summon the spirits. He keeps trying; he turns red, breaks into a sweat, and exhausts himself, all in front of an audience. Nothing happens. He cannot accomplish anything. It is impossible. Then he says to the audience, “Forgive me, something has happened to me. I cannot continue. Please go to the theater box office and receive a refund for your tickets.” The event had to be canceled. But there is also a rather striking incident which provides a practical answer. The late Father Charalambos Vasilopoulos recounts it
in his little book If Sorcery Exists. A certain man spent every night practicing spiritualism—that is, invoking demons whom he imagined to be the spirits of the dead. That is what spiritualism is. As we know, these spirits are demons and only demons; they are not the souls of people who have died. These demons caused terrible problems in the house: noises, disturbances, damage, and other dreadful things. This wretched man, enslaved to the evil spirits, occupied himself with them late into every night. One day his mother—the two of them lived together in the house—could no longer endure the situation. She called a priest, who performed the blessing of water. As we know,
the blessing of water is performed with the Holy Cross: “Save, O Lord, Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance.” We immerse the Holy Cross in the water and sanctify the place. In other words, the Holy Cross is made present. That evening the man summons the spirits, but there is no response. He calls them and calls them again, but nothing happens. Then, at one point, he hears a voice with his own ears: “We are not coming.” “Why are you not coming?” “Because your mother brought that other man here.” These are the demons. These are the demons. What does this mean? It is precisely what Saint Cyril says here: Do you not believe in the power of the crucified Christ? “Question the demons.”
Question the demons, and they themselves will testify to you about the power of Christ and the power of the Cross of Christ. That is how it is, my dear friends. But Christ, he says, died for the sins of others, while He Himself was sinless. And he says here as well: “Neither was deceit found in His mouth.”
Peter is the one who says this. But lest anyone suspect that he is merely flattering his Teacher, Isaiah also says it. Though Isaiah was not present at the beginning, through the Spirit he foresaw the coming of Christ in the flesh.
The Apostle Peter said it. What does the Apostle Peter write? He says that Christ “committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth.” But lest you think that the disciple is merely flattering his Teacher, you need only turn to Isaiah. This is from chapter 53, verse 9. Isaiah lived long before Jesus Christ—eight centuries before Christ—and through the Spirit he foresaw His coming in the flesh. In other words, he spiritually foresaw the coming of the Son of God in the flesh,
His assumption of human nature. What does Isaiah say there? The same thing the Apostle Peter says: “He committed no lawlessness, neither was deceit found in His mouth.” You may say, “Peter took this from Isaiah’s prophecy.” Yes, but Peter’s testimony, my dear friends, is based on personal experience. The prophet tells us what the Messiah would be like. Peter writes what the prophet said, but he also bears witness from experience, because he lived with Jesus Christ and could testify that “He committed no sin.” Saint Cyril then continues—and pay attention to this, because I shall say something more about it shortly: “What then? Does he now bring forward only a prophet as witness?”
“Take Pilate also as a witness—the very man who condemned Him—who said, ‘I find no fault in this man.’ And when he handed Him over, he washed his hands and said, ‘I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man.’” Do not go only to the prophet, he says.
Go to Pilate, who was hostile toward Jesus and who condemned Him. What did he say? “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man.” You see, then, that His innocence and sinlessness are confessed by the prophet, by the disciple, and by the judge.
And there is someone else as well. He brings forward another witness to the sinlessness of Jesus: the thief who was first to enter Paradise. Rebuking the thief beside him, he said, “We are receiving the due reward of what we have done, but this man has done nothing wrong. Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same condemnation?” You and I are both thieves, he is saying. I am a thief, and you are a thief. Yet we have seen who Jesus is. He forgave those who crucified Him while He was upon the Cross. And what does one thief say to the other?
“We are suffering justly, because we became thieves. But He is guilty of nothing.” You see, then, that the thief bears witness here to the sinlessness of Christ. Let me add something that Saint Cyril does not mention. If he had included everything, my dear friends, his Catecheses would have had to fill a hundred volumes. Naturally, he selects certain examples. So let me tell you one more. Once, men were sent to arrest Christ, but they did not arrest Him. They returned empty-handed, overwhelmed by His character and by His words. “Never has a man spoken like this,” they said. And there is something else. The Lord Himself said to His enemies, my dear friends, “Which of you convicts Me of sin?” No one in history had ever dared to ask such a question, least of all before his enemies.
I was saying that this question was addressed not only to those who were present, but to history itself. If you knew how thoroughly Holy Scripture has been examined in an effort to find something against Jesus Christ, you would know that there is nothing. Jesus Christ is truly the Sinless One. And so, my dear friends, I now ask you this: if Jesus Christ is the Sinless One, by what right do people in our own age dare to do what earlier ages did not, apart from two or three individuals beginning in the second century?
There was Celsus, and perhaps one or two others. No one else dared. For entire centuries, no one dared to attack the person of Jesus Christ with regard to His holiness or His moral purity. How, then, do we in the twentieth century dare to attribute unspeakable passions to Jesus Christ? It is dreadful, truly dreadful. I do not wish to tell you how some people distort the Gospel in order to accuse Jesus Christ of the most terrible sins. I do not wish to repeat these things, lest they cling to your mind like a leech—these ways in which they view and interpret the Word of God.
You know from the blasphemous plays and books of our time what accusations they hurl against Jesus Christ. For this reason, I greatly fear that our age will pay a very heavy price. Remember my words. You may object, but I do not say this as a curse—God forbid. It is a warning. All of us will pay very dearly, exceedingly dearly, for these unheard-of blasphemies against our Lord, which neither the centuries nor the worst enemies of Christianity ever dared to utter. That is the dreadful thing. This is why I told you to pay attention. I emphasize this point: Jesus Christ is the Sinless One.
Let us therefore take care. You know what was said when Jerusalem was captured. Although particular blame was placed upon the murder of Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, because he had been killed shortly before Jerusalem fell, and the city’s fall and terrible punishment were attributed to his unjust murder, still, what is the killing and martyrdom of Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, compared with the sacrificial death of Christ upon the Cross? What is it in comparison? Jerusalem was the city that paid very dearly for its sin—the city that crucified its God. Therefore, my dear friends, let us take care.
Let us take care when we hear people blaspheming. I am not speaking about ordinary profanities. Pay attention: I do not mean the common blasphemies heard in the marketplace, when people revile sacred things, though even that is of course incomprehensible. If a person truly considered whom he was blaspheming, he would begin to tremble. What person are you blaspheming? Whom? Whom? Have you understood whom you are blaspheming and what it is that you are saying? Grasp it, and you will shudder. But that is not what I mean. I mean those other blasphemies which claim that Christ was this or that, and that the Most Holy Theotokos was this or that. God forbid! If you hear people speaking this way, or see publications that brutally insult the name of Jesus Christ or of the Most Holy Theotokos,
do not remain inactive. Respond with a letter, or do whatever you can, but do not remain inactive. Do you know why? So that God may not punish us. If voices of protest are raised, then perhaps, for the sake of those people who protest and those voices that speak out, even the offenders themselves may be saved, and we may not be punished through some general catastrophe. We now come to the fourth paragraph: “Jesus therefore truly suffered for all mankind. For the Cross was no mere appearance; otherwise redemption itself would also be mere appearance. His death was not imaginary; otherwise salvation itself would be a myth.”
And this Golgotha convicts us, and we do not deny it; rather, we boast in it. For even if we were to deny it now, this Golgotha, near which we are all now standing, would convict us. The wood of the Cross convicts me—the wood which, little by little, has spread from here throughout the whole inhabited world.
This is a beautiful paragraph. It is certainly not the first time Saint Cyril has addressed this subject; he has returned to it repeatedly. And we shall encounter this teaching again further on, because in his time there were the Docetists, a heretical group which taught that Christ became incarnate only in appearance. Perhaps you have noticed this before.
The Archangel Gabriel “entered,” it says, and came to the Theotokos. He entered. The word “entered” presupposes that the door opened and he came inside. It does not say that he “appeared.” He entered. Let me say it once again: the door opened, and he came inside. What did she see before her? A young man, a man. Was he radiant with light? No. Had he been radiant, the Theotokos would have been overwhelmed, and who knows what might have followed. Our hymnographers express this beautifully when they place these words upon the lips of the Theotokos as she speaks to the angel. Holy Scripture does not record her saying this; the hymnographers place it on her lips, offering an interpretation: “Tell me, is this message from God? Do not deceive me as Eve was deceived.”
“Are you Satan?” You see, the Theotokos is afraid, because she does not have a radiant angel before her. No. The conversation unfolds calmly. A man appeared and said these things to the Theotokos. The Theotokos believed. Pay attention: she believed, because if the overwhelming weight of a theophany had come upon her, she could not have responded otherwise. Faith would have been abolished—faith would certainly have been abolished. How did the angel appear? As a man. Was he a man? No, no. Perhaps he entered but did not leave in the same way, as happened with Raphael.
In the Book of Tobit, Raphael accompanies Tobias on a distant journey, for many days and a long time. Tobias met the angel in the marketplace, however, and took him for a fellow countryman, and so forth. He moves about like a man. But when the angel Raphael reveals himself to the father and son, Tobit and Tobias, he vanishes. Until then he had entered and departed normally; but at that moment he disappeared, and they understood that he was an angel. So it was here as well: he entered in this manner, because otherwise faith would have been abolished. Holy Scripture does not, of course, say that he vanished, but we may suppose that he did. The Theotokos would then have received an indication that he was an angel. Yet her certainty did not come from that. Her certainty came
when the Theotokos went to see the sign the angel had given her: “Your kinswoman Elizabeth is with child and is in her sixth month.” Who? That elderly cousin? Her elderly cousin is with child? And the Theotokos went with haste, it says. Why with haste? Not because she lacked faith, but because she wished to rejoice in the sign. My dear friends, an angel had appeared, but without a human hypostasis—a human person. In outward appearance he was a man. Angels do not become incarnate. And you know very well that the Antichrist—forgive me, I mean the devil, Satan—cannot imitate the Incarnation of Christ.
He enters into a man—for example, the Antichrist. And although he will imitate many things belonging to Christ, imitating miracles and even resurrections, they will only be appearances. But he cannot imitate the Incarnation. It is impossible for the devil to imitate the Incarnation. He assumes human nature only in outward appearance. The Son of God alone underwent a true Incarnation. Therefore, those who belong to Satan are called “men of Satan” by Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, one of the first—if not the very first—to oppose the heresy of the Docetists.
They claimed that Christ did not possess a real human nature, but had it only in appearance, only seemingly, as with the angels. This is a dreadful heresy. And Saint Cyril says here: “If the Cross is only an appearance”—that is, if the Cross only seemed to happen—“then redemption is also only an appearance,” something imaginary. “For if the Cross is an appearance, redemption is an appearance as well.” The Cross, he says, is not a mere appearance or illusion. The Son of God truly died upon the Cross, because He possessed a real human nature. Otherwise, salvation itself would also be imaginary. “His death was not an illusion.”
His death was not imaginary, “for otherwise salvation would also be a myth”—that is, nonexistent. “If His death was imaginary, then those who say the following are speaking the truth.” For if His death had been imaginary... But pay attention: who said this, and what did they say? Who was it? His enemies. His enemies. You know, the testimony of enemies is often precious. When Sophocles—forgive me, Aeschylus—wishes to portray the victory of the Greeks over the Persians, he presents nothing onstage showing the Greek victory. Instead, in his play The Persians, he portrays the Persian court weeping and beating their breasts over their own defeat.
The Persians—yes, The Persians. You see it there. The same applies here. It is powerful to place testimony to a victory in the mouths of the enemy. It has great value here. Look at what was said and who said it. The chief priests who had condemned Him said to Pilate: “We remember that, while He was still alive, that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’” “While He was still alive”—when He was alive. What, then, is He now? Now He is dead. Who therefore testified that Jesus had died? His enemies themselves. And Saint Cyril says something very beautiful.
“I am not ashamed,” Saint Cyril says. “My Lord was truly crucified, but I am not ashamed. He was crucified, and I do not deny it.” Yes, He was crucified; He was truly crucified. Indeed, we regard it as our boast. Why should I deny it, since Christ rose from the dead? Why should I deny it? This Golgotha proves me wrong if I do. And do you know how close Golgotha was to them? It was right beside them. It was within the very church where the catecheses were being delivered. Do you know where the catecheses we are now reading were given? In the Church of the Resurrection, built by Saint Helen—if I remember correctly and am not mistaken—in the year 333. It was built by Saint Helen in 333, if I remember correctly; I may be slightly off, one way or the other. And do you know when the catecheses we have before us were delivered? In the year 350. Therefore, they were delivered inside the church. And you know that the Church of the Resurrection encompasses Golgotha. Saint Cyril delivered his catecheses somewhere within that church, and he says here, “It is near us.” How near? Beneath the very same roof. Listen to how he puts it: “This Golgotha refutes me.” If I say that Christ did not die, this Golgotha refutes me, “near which we are all now gathered.” Where are we? Right beside it.
Close to it. Golgotha itself refutes me if I say that Christ did not die upon the Cross. Saint Cyril is fond of this form of expression: “This refutes me; that refutes me.” It makes his speech vivid, and it is very beautiful. Then he adds a second witness: “The wood of the Cross refutes me.” Pay attention to this: “It was gradually distributed from here throughout the whole inhabited world.” This is the Precious Wood, divided and dispersed throughout the world—the well-known distribution of the Precious Wood across the whole world. Saint Cyril says that the Precious Cross refutes him: the very Cross upon which Christ died and whose wood has now been distributed throughout the world, received by the whole earth as a blessing.
See what miracles are worked through the surviving portions of the Precious Cross. We have the two largest pieces on the Holy Mountain, as you know. It is astonishing, my dear friends. I confess the Cross because I have seen the Resurrection; I know the Resurrection, and therefore I confess the Cross. “For if He had remained dead after being crucified, perhaps I would not have confessed it; perhaps I would have concealed it out of regard for my Teacher. But since the Resurrection followed the Cross, I am not ashamed to proclaim it.” If my Teacher had not risen, perhaps I would have concealed it and not spoken of it. But now I do not conceal it, nor am I ashamed to proclaim it.
Because the Resurrection followed the Cross. Saint Cyril will, of course, devote a separate catechesis to the Resurrection of Christ, and there he has much to tell us. For now, throughout this catechesis, he is speaking about Christ’s death upon the Cross. And we now come to the fifth section.
The paragraph.
“Like everyone else who is in the flesh, He was crucified, but not for sins like theirs.” He was crucified in every outward respect just as a robber was, but not for the same kinds of sins. “For He was not led to death because of love of money.” The Lord was not led to death because He loved money. Saint Cyril uses some very beautiful contrasts here. “For He was the teacher of freedom from possessions.” These contrasts demonstrate His innocence. He was not crucified because He loved money, nor was He accused of embezzlement or anything similar, for He taught freedom from possessions. Let me make a hymnographic observation. Among the troparia of Holy Week there is a beautiful passage in which the hymnographer asks Judas: “Did you not know that your Teacher possessed nothing? If you were a lover of money, why did you follow a Teacher who possessed nothing?” That is very beautiful. “Nor was He condemned because of lust.”
For He Himself clearly says, “Whoever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her.” No evil desire overshadowed Him, so that He might be condemned for it. For He Himself said that it is sinful even to look upon another human being with passion—and I do not say only a woman. This can apply to a woman looking upon a man, just as it applies to a man looking upon a woman: whenever you look upon another person under the influence of a passion. “Nor did He rashly strike or beat anyone.” He did not rashly strike, wound, or beat anyone so as to be condemned for it. “For He turned the other cheek to the one who struck Him.”
He was able to turn the other cheek to receive a blow; this is what He taught, and this is what He did. “Nor did He despise the Law, for He was the fulfiller of the Law.” He did not despise the Law and thereby deserve condemnation, for He fulfilled and carried out the Law. “Nor did He revile a prophet.” He neither insulted nor spoke evil of any prophet. “For He Himself was the One proclaimed by the prophets.” He was the very One whom the prophets had proclaimed and foretold. “Nor did He withhold anyone’s wages.” He did not withhold the wages of laborers. “For without payment and freely
He healed.” He offered healing freely; He healed and gave without charge. “He did not sin in words, deeds, or thoughts.” Pay attention to this threefold distinction, because some people say that committing an evil deed is wrong, but speaking evil words does not matter—and still less does merely thinking evil things. My dear friends, look at what is said here: whatever sinful thing I do, whatever sinful word I speak, and whatever sinful thing I think is sin. “He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth. When He was reviled, He did not revile in return.”
When He was insulted, He did not answer with insults. “When He suffered, He did not threaten.” He did not threaten while suffering, as we might say, “I will show you what I will do to you,” nor did He curse anyone or say, “I will send you to Hell.” Nothing of the kind. “When He suffered, He did not threaten; He approached His Passion not unwillingly, but willingly.” He did not come to His Passion against His will. He came willingly, because He desired to do so. And He came by concealing His purpose from the devil, who raised Him upon the Cross, so that He might save the human race. I would remind you of a similar example, which I believe I mentioned yesterday: the story of Codrus.
Codrus was the king of Athens, and he received the following oracle from Delphi: the city of Athens would be saved if its king died. But how could this be brought about? He dressed as a peasant, took an axe, and went to cut wood beside the enemies of his homeland. They told him to get up and leave, but he persisted in cutting wood. In other words, he provoked them. They became angry and killed him. When they learned that he was Codrus the king, they withdrew, because the enemy also knew the oracle: if the king of Athens were killed, they would lose the battle. So they departed. The siege was lifted, and the city was saved.
My dear friends, this is a beautiful type—a foreshadowing—even though it comes from the pagan world, and we may say that it corresponds to Jesus Christ. He clothed Himself in human nature; His divinity was hidden from the devil; the devil raised Him upon the Cross; and the Son of God was put to death. This is why the Lord concealed His divinity in every possible way. What had He told the three disciples? “You shall not tell anyone what you saw on Mount Tabor. You shall speak of it only after the Resurrection of the Son of Man.” The devil was not to learn—do not be surprised by this expression—who the Son of God was: that He is the Son of the glory of God, the glory of God, the Son, the Lord, Yahweh, the Lord. The devil was not to know. He had deceived our first parents; now the devil himself had to be deceived.
And the Lord came to outwit the devil. He put on the form of a servant—that is, human nature—and He came not unwillingly or against His will, but freely and willingly. He came precisely in order to offer Himself. “And even now, if someone tries to dissuade Him and says, ‘God be gracious to You, Lord,’ He will answer again, ‘Get behind Me, Satan.’” If someone were to say to Him at that very moment, “God be gracious to You, Lord; do not go to be crucified,” He would say once more, “Get behind Me, Satan. Go away. I am going so that the human race may be saved.”

να συμμαχήσουν και να πολεμήσουν τον Τίμιο Σταυρόν, τίποτα δεν θα πετύχουν. Αυτό να το ξέρετε. «Καὶ πύλαι ᾅδου», που είπε ο Χριστός, «οὐ κατισχύσουσιν αὐτῆς», της Εκκλησίας, η οποία Εκκλησία είναι ο θεματοφύλαξ του Σταυρού του Χριστού. Αυτή είναι η διαφορά. Και αυτό πρέπει πάντα να το προσέξουμε. Αν το θέλετε, με ένα μικρό, συνηθισμένο, πρακτικό παράδειγμα. Λέμε ότι ο Σταυρός είναι φύλαξ της οικουμένης, φύλακας της ζωής μου. Μάλιστα. Έχω τον Σταυρό στο λαιμό μου κρεμασμένον. Έχω τον Τίμιο Σταυρό στο αυτοκίνητό μου. Έχω τον Τίμιο Σταυρό στο σπίτι μου. Και παθαίνω ατύχημα. Γιατί μου συνέβη αυτό; Δεν με φύλαξε ο Τίμιος Σταυρός;
Και κάποιος ακόμη. Έχει και άλλον μάρτυρα της αναμαρτησίας του Ιησού: ο πρωτοστάτης του Παραδείσου ληστής, επιτιμών τον πλησίον και λέγων: «Ημείς άξια ων επράξαμεν απολαμβάνομεν, ούτος δε ουδέν κακόν εποίησεν. Ουδέ συ φοβή τον Θεόν, ότι και συ εν τω αυτώ κρίματι ει;» Κι εγώ κι εσύ, ο ληστής. Κι εγώ ληστής κι εσύ ληστής. Είδαμε ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς. Συγχωρούσε τους σταυρωτάς του επάνω εις τον σταυρόν. Και τι λέει ο ένας εις τον άλλον;
Έλεγα ότι το ερώτημα αυτό δεν έχει τεθεί εις τους παρευρισκομένους του, αλλά έχει τεθεί εις αυτήν την ιστορία, διότι, αν ξέρατε πώς έχει ερευνηθεί η Αγία Γραφή για να βρουν κάτι εις βάρος του Ιησού Χριστού, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα. Είναι πραγματικά ο Ιησούς Χριστός ο Αναμάρτητος. Γι’ αυτό, αγαπητοί μου, έρχομαι τώρα και σας λέγω το εξής: εάν ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι ο Αναμάρτητος, τότε με ποιο δικαίωμα ερχόμαστε στη σύγχρονη εποχή μας, που άλλες εποχές δεν το ετόλμησαν, πλην δύο-τριών προσώπων ήδη από του δευτέρου αιώνος;
