Summary

The lecture presents Saint Paul’s teaching that the Cross is a scandal to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but God’s saving power to believers. Christ accepted His Passion voluntarily, while Peter’s attempt to prevent it illustrates how apparently compassionate counsel can unknowingly serve temptation. The lecture concludes that the Cross confounds worldly expectations yet reveals God’s love, justice, wisdom, and triumph over death and the Devil.

My beloved, we have reached the thirteenth catechesis, which concerns the article of the Creed, “who was crucified and buried.” That is, we are speaking of the Precious Cross and our Lord’s sacrifice upon the Cross. The third paragraph.

Verses 18 through 23. Last time, we said that we should make a brief analysis of this passage. But let me first complete the sentence: “For those who are perishing, it is foolishness; but for us who are being saved, it is the power of God.”

“Of the Cross” means the preaching of the Cross. This is what the Apostle Paul means when he says, “For the word of the Cross”—that is, the preaching of the Cross. We must not be ashamed of the Cross of the Savior; rather, we must glory in it. Why? Because for us it is salvation. Yes, the preaching of the Cross is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness and absurdity to the Gentiles. But for us, it is a matter of salvation. You see, there are three categories of people—three different attitudes toward the Cross of Christ. The first category is the Jews. Why is the Cross a stumbling block to them? I believe that, from our study of the Book of Acts and our present examination of the Apostle Peter’s second address to the Jews, we have already understood what caused the Jews to stumble.

They were scandalized by it. So dreadful was this stumbling block for them that they regarded it as impossible to overcome. And for two thousand years now, they have not overcome it. You may ask whether their attitude is wrong. That is another question. Yet for them, it remains an insurmountable obstacle. The obstacle is this: for generation after generation, they had fostered the belief that the Messiah would be a national liberator. How, then, could Jesus be the Messiah when He appeared powerless even to save Himself?

There He was, hanging upon the Cross. The chief priests and the Pharisees mocked Him at the time, saying, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.”

Thank you. “If God desires Him and acknowledges Him as His Son,” they said, “let Him come down from the Cross. Let us see that, and then we will believe.” There is the obstacle. A Messiah who is crucified is no Messiah. That is the whole obstacle; always remember it. A Messiah who is crucified is no Messiah, no redeemer, no Christ, no savior. But then, what must the Messiah be like? Could the Messiah ever be crucified? In their minds, the Messiah must crucify others.

Be crucified Himself? The Messiah could not merely endure passively; He had to be the one acting within history—not passively, but dynamically and with power. The Jews could never understand that the Messiah would be one who suffers, that He would not be a national savior, and that the very thing over which they stumbled—and which they themselves had forged, the Cross—was precisely the means of salvation.

Because—because of that very familiar maneuver, known to every soldier who has served: when someone throws a hand grenade at you,

it explodes after a few seconds—six or eight seconds, I do not know exactly. The time is short, but not so short that nothing can be done. So, once the grenade has been released from its safety pin, thrown from the attacker’s hand, and fallen into your trench, if you are alert enough to pick it up and throw it back, the harm will fall upon the one who threw it at you. The grenade will explode there. This, my beloved, is what God did. The Jews came to thwart the work of God—or, if you prefer, the Devil behind them sought to thwart the work of salvation. And how did the Devil intend to thwart the work of salvation? By killing Jesus, without suspecting that He is the Son of God

in the fullest and absolute sense—that is, that He is God. Otherwise, the Devil would never have dared to do this. The Devil did not know who Jesus was. Jesus concealed Himself. No one knew who Jesus truly was. The Apostle Paul states this plainly. He also says that they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory if they had known. If they had known! Not even the Devil knew. He heard the words, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” But what did “Son” mean? Son, Son, Son—he could not comprehend it. The Devil could not understand that God is the Holy Trinity, because this dogma was revealed by Jesus Christ. Until then, the Devil was ignorant of it, as were the angels.

God’s plan, then, was precisely a trap for the Devil. And what happens now? The Devil raises Christ upon the Cross in order to thwart the work of salvation. But no one can thwart what God wills. Even if we suppose that the Devil or human beings frustrate God’s plan, what does God do? What I told you in the example of the hand grenade: He takes the very thing held by human beings or by Satan as an instrument for frustrating His plan, and through that very thing He defeats both human beings and Satan. In other words, the Cross was intended as the instrument by which salvation would be thwarted. God takes that very instrument and makes it the instrument of salvation.

God takes the Cross—and I will put this rather vividly—and strikes the Devil on the head with it. Forgive the vivid expression: He strikes the Devil on the head with the Cross. With what? With the very instrument through which the Devil sought to thwart the work of God. This is God’s plan. But the Jews did not understand it. You may ask, “How do we know that this was God’s plan?” We know through the prophecies. Through the prophecies. For if we tried to interpret these events without the prophecies, we could be accused of imposing an arbitrary interpretation upon them.

Without the prophecies, it might seem that we were simply interpreting events however we pleased, whether or not things were truly so. But all these things were foretold. Remember, my beloved, that most ancient prophecy. It was given in Paradise by God Himself. And do you know who was speaking? It was God the Word (Logos) Himself, who would become incarnate. He Himself was speaking. What did He say there to the Devil? He said that the one who would be born of the woman, from the seed of the woman—notice that He does not say from Adam, but from the woman—would be struck by him: “You shall bruise His heel.” You will not inflict upon Him a wound of lasting consequence, because He will rise again.

Is it a grave thing if the back of my heel is wounded slightly? A wound to the heel is not fatal. In other words, the harm you will do to Him will be very small. You will raise Him upon the Cross, but He will rise again. Therefore, the harm will not be great. But what will He do to you in return? He will crush your head. And the crushing of the head is a mortal wound. Behold the prophecy. The prophecy could have been expressed differently: without your wounding Him, He will crush you. But it does not say that. It says that you will wound Him, and He will crush you.

So then—I will not speak of the Prophet Isaiah or all the other prophets. Further on, Saint Cyril does precisely this: he explains all these things to us so that we, my beloved, may understand in whom we believe and why the apparent weakness of the Cross was included in God’s plan. Indeed, Saint Cyril will tell us further on that the Passion was voluntary, freely accepted. It was so completely voluntary that the Apostle Peter himself—and it does no harm if we anticipate these things now and repeat them later—when the Lord said, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,” replied, “God forbid it, Lord! May this never happen to You!” The Apostle Peter was saying, “Do You not understand that the Jews intend to harm You?”

“And now You say, ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem’?” Yet the Lord knew perfectly well what awaited Him and repeatedly warned His disciples, telling them that the Son of Man would be crucified, and so forth. But they understood nothing. Everything was confused in their minds. Christ enjoyed such renown among the multitude that the disciples could not imagine this happening, even though they saw painful signs gathering on the horizon as the rulers began to oppose Jesus. The disciples could not grasp what the Lord was telling them. Holy Scripture says it plainly: they understood nothing. What they failed to understand above all was the Resurrection. “And on the third day,” He said, “He will rise again.”

They did not understand. The Evangelist John tells us, “Then they remembered.” Only then did they remember what the Lord had told them. So what does the Lord do? He says to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but of the things of men.” In other words: I shall go to Jerusalem because I am ready for the sacrifice. “Get behind Me, Satan!” Indeed, in Peter’s person He saw Satan. At that moment, the Apostle Peter became an instrument of Satan, without realizing it. After all, Peter’s loving concern for the Lord—what could appear more beautiful, better, or more friendly than that?

He advised his Teacher: “Lord, do not go. The Jews have murderous intentions toward You.” What could seem more friendly? Yet this was not true friendship. Do you see how the Devil deceives us from the right, through something that appears good? That is why the Lord said to the Apostle Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan!” In reality, Satan stood behind Peter and now came to tempt the Lord. Do you know what the Gospel according to Luke says that Matthew does not? When the Lord was in the wilderness and underwent Satan’s threefold temptation, Luke says that the Devil departed from Him “until an opportune time.” What does this mean? “Until an opportune time” means that the Devil returned.

He returned precisely during those difficult final days of the Lord’s earthly life. He placed envy in the hearts of the rulers. He placed temptation in the heart of Judas. He sowed his seed in Judas and, we might say, even sowed his diabolical seed in the Apostle Peter: “You are ardent and impetuous, so now I will use you in my own way,” says the Devil. “And this will be my way: because you care for the Teacher as a friend, you will try to prevent Him.” This is the meaning of “until an opportune time”: the Devil returns. And the Lord knows all these things. What does He say to the Apostle Peter? “Simon, son of Jonah.”

“Satan has asked for you—Satan has asked for you.” From whom did he ask? The Greek word means to ask or demand something from someone. From whom, then? From God. You see? From God. He received permission from God. “Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat”—that he may toss you about and shake you in the sieve like wheat. To use a modern expression, that he may make you dance on a hot griddle. “But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned”—which means that you will have gone astray somewhere; you will deny Me.

The prophecy continues: “And when you have returned” from your denial, “strengthen your brethren.” For others too will have fallen away. The Lord knows everything. He sees everything, because He is God. What, then, is His Passion? It is voluntary. This is the horizon I want to open before you: His Passion is voluntary. The Lord goes forth to ensnare the devil. For just as the devil once ensnared our first parents, so now he suffers through the very means by which he helped bring about their fall. The same means, the same weapon. You deceived them? You will be deceived. You threw a grenade at Me—to return to my earlier example? I will throw that very same grenade back at you.

I will throw the very same grenade back at you. I will act before you do, and I will destroy you, not you Me. So, you deceived? You will be deceived. You murdered—for the devil murdered our first parents. And you know what “murdered” means here: he separated them from God. You will suffer the same fate. You will end in eternal Hell. “Depart,” and so forth, “into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” The eternal fire is prepared for him, for the devil and his angels, the demons. Do you see? You may ask why God chose this method. I will answer with the words of Saint Isaac the Syrian. God had many methods He could have used. Yet He chose the most terrible way in order to reveal

His love: the most terrible way, the most dreadful ordeal a human being could undergo. And no one can claim that these events were staged and arranged so that human beings merely moved within the confines of fate. No! Freedom of the will is an astonishing thing. God weaves His plan through the freedom of human beings, and even through the freedom of Satan himself. It is there that He weaves the history of salvation. It is beyond comprehension. If we ever enter deeply into these things, my dear friends, we find that they are beyond comprehension. Therefore, since the Jews raise their objection in the text of Saint Cyril,

and since they stumbled because they were seeking a Messiah of that kind, it was only natural that the Cross should become a scandal, a stumbling block, for them. Do you know what the word “scandal” means? It means a stake. If you open a dictionary, you will find: “scandal—a stake,” that is, an obstacle. It is something jutting out from my smooth, level road. I do not see this stake, this protruding object; I stumble over it and fall. That is what it means to be scandalized: I stumble over the stake and fall.

We might say that this too is one of Christ’s names. I have told you this before. Christ has some unusual names. Did you know that Christ is called a worm? Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me—a worm: “But I am a worm, and no man.” Do you know why He is called a worm? It is not only because of His utter abasement, but also because a worm is used to catch a fish. Pay attention. The Cross, as the Fathers of our Church say, is the fishhook. And we put a worm on the hook to catch the fish. So the Cross is the hook, and the worm is the bait:

the flesh of Christ. And who is to be lured by the bait? The devil. This is what John Chrysostom says in his Catechetical Homily: “He took a body and encountered God.” The devil could not see the divinity; he saw a body, a man. So he came and bit the body—the worm, the bait—and encountered God. How could he have imagined it? There the devil was caught fast. He was defeated; it was over. Over—once again, over. Do you see the deception? Christ is a deceiver—but please, for God’s sake, do not misunderstand me.

He deceives the deceiver. He is called a worm; He also bears the name Serpent—remember the sign of Moses. He also bears the title and name “Stumbling Block,” or “Stone of Stumbling,” as He Himself said. And what did He say? Whoever stumbles over the stone, which is Christ, and takes offense at Him will fall. Then, He says, the stone will rise and fall upon him, winnow him, and crush him. Christ is therefore also called the Stone of Stumbling. But now you may ask—and though I am making this discourse rather long, it does not matter, as we take these walks through Holy Scripture—did Christ not say,

“It would be better for the one who causes scandal to put a millstone around his neck and cast himself into the sea”? That is not what we are speaking about, because Christ scandalized no one. The scandal was within the people themselves. Let me give you a present-day example of our own. A lady said to me today—and she may even be here, I do not know—that she receives Holy Communion frequently. “They told me,” she said, “not to go to the same Church every week to receive Holy Communion. Might I be scandalizing people?” Sometimes even priests may take offense. “Why, does this lady or this gentleman come and receive Holy Communion so often? How strange, how strange!” Or she may scandalize the congregation: “Really, does this person receive Holy Communion every Sunday?” So, she says, in order not to scandalize people, she should take turns going to

different churches. What do you say? Does someone who receives Holy Communion frequently scandalize others? Those others carry the scandal within themselves. Well then, it is in this sense that Christ is a stumbling block. Christ does not cause scandal; nor is He literally a worm, or a serpent, or anything of the kind. Rather, the scandal lies within human beings, and that is why they are scandalized. This is why Christ is called the Stone of Stumbling, for very many have taken offense at Him. Millions of people have been scandalized by the person of Jesus Christ. “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” What do they say about Me?

The disciples answer: some say one thing, and others another. “But who do you say that I am?” “You are the Son of the living God.” Whatever else people may say, they fail to confess what He truly is: the divine and human nature of Christ. They have been scandalized. And when they take offense at the person of Christ, they themselves are at fault; then Christ winnows them and truly crushes them. I believe you understand. And see the love of God, the justice of God, the wisdom of God, and the plan of God. I will say it once more, because in our age we have made freedom into a god: God’s plan moves through human choices and human freedoms, never being thwarted anywhere, and in the end God triumphs through those very things, while human beings remain accountable for what they have done. That is what freedom means.

Whatever I do, I am responsible for what I have done. That is why the Apostle Peter does not say to the Jews, “Well, what could you do? You crucified the Lord.” What does he tell them? “Repent.” Yes, you did it—but repent. You did this freely. Do you now wish to be justified? Repent. That is all. Here we see freedom, because what does it mean to repent, to undergo metanoia? It means that I did something freely. If I had no freedom to act, why would I repent? Repentance has no meaning unless I was free in what I did. It means that I was free, I did it, and now I must repent—and, if you will, I am once again free to repent.

My dear friends, Christ—that is, the Cross—is a scandal to the Jews. And so these unfortunate people, in their effort to escape this impasse, have gone so far as to fabricate strange ideas. This is what happens when someone refuses to admit something: he falls from one delusion into another, until at last he staggers helplessly. This people once studied and interpreted Holy Scripture and awaited the Messiah, yet they did not understand who the Messiah would be or what His characteristics would be. As I have told you before—and it does no harm to hear it again—this people has now reached the point of trying to escape the impasse. When, at last, will the Messiah come? When will the Messiah come? There have

been two thousand years before Christ.

For the first person to prophesy concerning the people of Israel, at least, is Abraham. Abraham—Abraham. I am not going back to Noah or Adam; I begin with Abraham. There were two thousand years before Christ and another two thousand years after Christ: four thousand years. So when will the Messiah come? What people on earth has existed for four thousand years? Very few peoples have endured for four thousand years.

Consider how many ancient peoples have vanished from the face of history.

History... Yet this people continues to exist to this day with its historical identity intact. The preservation of Israel’s historical identity is one of the most astonishing things in history, and this is due to God. He Himself says, “I will not destroy you, so that you may live through the consequences of your course.” How fearful! “When you do not listen to Me, I will scatter you among the nations. I will not destroy you, so that you may live through the consequences of your course and know what you have done: that you abandoned the living God and turned wherever you chose to turn.” So, concerning this people, when will the Messiah come, we might ask? When will He come? And passing from one delusion to another, as I told you earlier, listen to what they now say: the Messiah will not be a person.

He will be a people, and that people is Israel. And because certain nationalist currents within Israel held ambitions of conquest—the belief that the Messiah, as a national hero, would conquer the world—Zionism arose. Zionism interprets the Messiah as not being a person. Do you know, then, how they interpret Ezekiel’s prophecy, which we read when we return to the church with the Epitaphios at Matins on Holy Saturday? You remember that shortly before the end of the service, before “Through the prayers,” we read a prophecy saying that

God showed Ezekiel bare bones spread across a plain. Then He said, “Son of man, command these people to rise.” And I saw, he says, sinews forming over the bones, then flesh, and then human beings. And there God says, “I will raise you from your graves.” Why do we read this prophecy? Clearly because it refers to the resurrection of the dead. How do the Jews interpret it? They claim that the prophet means, “I will raise you from the graves of the nations, where you are now dead”—in other words, where you are deprived of freedom.

“I will raise you,” meaning, “I will bring you out from among those nations, give you a homeland and a country of your own, and you will rise again as a nation.” Thus they interpret the prophecy symbolically. You understand that they interpret everything through the lens of their national restoration. This is why I told you in yesterday’s talk that Zionism is a fearful thing; it is antichristian—literally opposed to Christ. And I made the distinction for you: the Jewish people are one thing, and Zionism is another. You may remember that two or three years ago the United Nations—and this was reported in the newspapers—

condemned Zionism for having ambitions of world domination. I am not the one saying this. You see, then, that Zionism has been recognized for what it is. Whether it cares very much that it has been recognized is another matter; it continues pursuing its aims. But Zionism is one thing, and the Jewish people are another. If you will, we could cite what the Apostle Paul says: “I tell you this Mystery”—that the people will return. But do we not also know that some of the people will not return? Indeed, they will call for the Antichrist; they will desire the Antichrist, and they will kill the two prophets. You may ask: how

How, then, are these two prophecies reconciled? Are they not contradictory? No. Why not? Because the prophecy of the Apostle Paul says that the people will turn to Christ. Malachi says the same when he speaks of the prophecy concerning the Prophet Elijah: “I will send Elijah the Tishbite, so that he may turn the hearts of the parents toward their children.” It does not say the hearts of the children toward their parents, but the hearts of the parents—the fathers—toward their children. The way this is expressed is significant: “before I come and utterly strike the earth.” In other words, Israel will turn back. Why does it say, “The hearts of the fathers will turn toward the children”? The children are the Church, while the fathers are Israel, which came before as Judaism. Thus, it says that the parents—that is, Judaism—will turn toward the Church. This is true and agrees with the Apostle Paul. What the Evangelist John says in the Apocalypse is not contradictory: the Antichrist will again be brought forward by Jews. The Apostle Paul also says this in his Epistle to the Thessalonians. What does this mean? It means the unrepentant Jews—what, in modern language, we would call the Zionists. The people will return, but the Zionists will not. They will bring forward the Antichrist. That is how the matter stands. As I told you, we cannot turn against the Jews.

But we must oppose the Zionists.

“For the word of the Cross is a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.” This is the second kind of response to the Cross of Christ: the response of the Greeks. Pay attention. As I have often told you, when we say “Greeks” here, we do not mean the Greek people. We mean the Gentile world, which at that time was designated by the name “Greeks.” I always remind you of this so that there will be no misunderstanding. Saint Athanasius the Great has a work entitled Against the Greeks. Of course, it is not directed against the Greek people; it means Against the Pagans. The term “Greek” was synonymous with “pagan.” It was certainly not directed against the Greeks themselves, since the Greeks came to believe in Christ. This is well known.

Thus, when the passage says, “but foolishness to the Gentiles,” it means that to the Greeks—to the Gentile world—it is foolishness. And, if you like, we see this very attitude in the Athenians’ response to the preaching of the Apostle Paul, when he spoke about the resurrection of the dead and proclaimed that Christ had died and risen.

They thought that Christ was one deity and the Resurrection another, a pair of deities: one male and one female. That was how the descendants of Greece’s great philosophers understood it by then—people who merely lived on the memory of the past and had nothing important of their own to produce or present. Nothing at all.

They were empty people. What did they say to the Apostle Paul? “We will hear you again.” In other words, my dear friends, they did not accept the preaching of the Apostle Paul. Why? Because they regarded it as foolishness. And even if they might have been able to understand the resurrection of the dead, please read the Apostle Paul’s address to the Athenians. You will see that it ends abruptly. His listeners began to laugh, and no one can speak to an audience that is laughing at him. Do you think I could continue speaking to you if you were laughing? I would stop and leave. The audience was laughing and mocking him. Why? Because they considered what Paul was saying to be foolishness.

Where did they see foolishness? Their rationalism told them: Can the dead ever rise? A little later, Paul would write to the Corinthians that “some have no knowledge of God,” speaking about the resurrection of the dead. Some among you, he says, have no knowledge of God. In what sense? They do not know the power of God. They think that God has no power, that God cannot raise the dead. The Apostle Paul says this to their shame. The Gentiles—the Gentile world—could not grasp that God is mighty and able to raise the dead. And do not forget that the resurrection of the dead was an extremely important issue. An extremely important one.

The Apostle Paul was judged by his own people because he believed in the resurrection of the dead. Remember when they dragged him before the council. He knew—as all this is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles—he knew what he was doing.

On one side of the council sat the Sadducees, and on the other side the Pharisees. The Sadducees did not believe in the existence of spirit, soul, angels, or the resurrection of the dead—nothing. The Pharisees did believe. And Paul’s first statement was this: “Today I am being judged—that is, you have brought me here before your council—because I believe in the resurrection of the dead.” At once, an uproar broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

The Apostle Paul had cast the apple of discord into the council. Most cleverly! He set them arguing with one another, while he, the accused, watched as the opposing sides and benches fought among themselves. Most cleverly! Do you see what he said? “I am being judged because I believe in the resurrection of the dead.” You see what a great issue this was. The Jews—or rather, the Pharisees—believed it, while the Sadducees did not; the Sadducees were the scoundrels of that age. But the Greeks, meaning the Gentile world, could never conceive of the Resurrection. It was unthinkable to them because rationalism intervened. As I told you, I see a person die. We place him in the grave, and he becomes earth.

So what can possibly come forth from that? Cremation of the dead was limited, of course. The Greeks generally buried their dead, but they also had the custom of burning them; both practices existed. Someone might therefore say, “And what about those who were burned and became ashes? What nonsense is this babbler talking about?” That is what they called Paul. Therefore, my dear friends, since the resurrection of the dead depends upon the Resurrection of Christ, and the Resurrection of Christ follows from the Cross, all this is foolishness to the Gentiles. But the Cross is foolishness to them for another reason as well. The ancient Greeks and the ancient world unquestionably lived within a particular religious belief.

It was always idolatry, with a multitude of deities. They could never imagine that a God could be crucified and die. A God being crucified? It was unthinkable. And especially that He should be crucified as the lowest of criminals, for the cross was an instrument of execution. Therefore, when Paul preached that Christ—God who became man—went even as far as the Cross, this was incomprehensible to them. It was foolishness. Here again we see rationalism. You see how human rationalism becomes an obstacle to accepting something.

Well, if you would like me to speak about this a little more broadly...

Thank you. Our own reason might have doubted such things even though they are realities. Suppose someone had said a hundred years ago that we would be able to hear not only the voice of a person in America, but even his breathing and the book or paper lying before him. Would anyone have believed it? They would have said, “You are mad.” And yet, my dear friends, when a radio newsreader turns the page on which the news is written, we hear it. We even hear his breathing. We hear it; it is real. Yet a hundred years ago—indeed, even more recently—it would have been unthinkable. Completely unthinkable. Would you not say, my dear friends, that...

We can transmit moving images instantaneously. Something happens somewhere, and at that very moment, from an unimaginably great distance, we can see what is happening far away. Such a thing seems incomprehensible. Tell me, only a few years ago, who could have imagined that man would travel among the stars? Is that easy to comprehend? There are still people in Larissa, if you like, who cannot believe it. “Nonsense,” they say, “you are deceiving us. What do you mean, man went to the moon? You are fooling us.” They cannot believe it. Yet we have gone not only to the moon, but farther and farther—and who knows where we shall go next? How many things conflict with our reason and yet are realities!

I say this to show you how limited human understanding is and that we must never reject something out of hand. If you like, one true mark of a sound and profound scientist is that he never dismisses anything, but always examines it. Always. For the history of science has shown that what we once rejected was later proved true. It is as though I had various materials on my desk and decided one day to relieve the clutter by taking some of them and throwing them into the wastebasket. To make the example more concrete...

Imagine an accountant with receipts, papers, pencils, and erasers on his desk. Naturally, he sorts through them. He takes certain receipts that he has already copied and no longer needs, and throws them away. Yet how many times has he bent over the wastebasket to retrieve something and examine it again? I do this often myself. That is why I never burn my papers until I am certain that I can safely do so. Only after I have finished my work do I say, “Now I will burn the papers.” Many times I have gone back to the wastebasket in my office. Many times. A scientist does the same. He returns to investigate what he once discarded as useless. Is that not so? And how many times...

How many times has something we rejected later proved to be true? That is what a sound scientist does. Therefore, we must never say, “How can that possibly be?” How do you know? It may indeed be possible. We have already mentioned so many examples. And these things are certainly possible for God, for He is the almighty God. If you believe that God is almighty, why do you doubt? God, as we have said, created the world from nothing. Having brought it into being, is He now unable to transform it as He wills and therefore grant the resurrection of the dead? This is rationalism. I will say it once more and conclude this point, my dear friends: the Cross is indeed regarded as foolishness by the Gentile world.

We now come to the third kind of response and attitude toward the Cross of Christ: “But to us it is salvation.” To us, he says, it is salvation. And a little farther on: “To those who are perishing, it is foolishness.” Here, of course, “perishing” is not used as when someone insults another by calling him a wretch. It means that he is lost, that he is heading toward Hell. To those who are perishing—to the lost—the Cross is foolishness. “But to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.” For us who are being saved, for whom the Cross is salvation, it is the power of God. Truly so.

For us, the Precious Cross is salvation. How is it our salvation? Through everything I told you earlier: the devil sought to thwart the plan of salvation, but the wisdom of God—the manifold wisdom of God—used the very instrument intended to thwart that plan in order to grant us salvation. For Christ rose from the dead and gives us salvation. Thus, for us the Cross is not only salvation, but also the power of God. This means not only the power of God revealed through the Resurrection, but something more: this Precious Cross, which slew the devil, did not slay Christ.

It killed the devil. It “killed” him, in quotation marks—that is, it struck him on the head and rendered him powerless. When I believe in Jesus Christ, then for me the Cross is a power against whom? Against the demons, against the devil. It is power.

A person holds up the Precious Cross; but if he also believes in Christ, then he puts the demons to flight. It is a true power. And all this is because “He who dies on behalf of others is not a mere man like us, but the Son of God, God made man.” And all this is because He who died on our behalf...

To die on behalf of others means that He who died had no sins of His own; He died for the sins of others. He is not a mere man—not simply a man and nothing more—but the Son of God, God made man, God who became man. That is why all this is possible. For if He had been a great man but not God, would so much have been said about Him? Socrates, for example, died for his ideas. Can we admire him? Of course we can. How beautiful is that scene in prison with Crito, where they enter into dialogue; you may remember it from school.

He says, “What are you saying, Crito? What are you saying when you come and tell me that you will pay the guards”—for Crito was wealthy—“and that I shall then be smuggled away to Thessaly?” Thessaly would have welcomed Socrates, and he would have been safe there. “What are you saying? And what will the Athenians say? This man who taught so many things now, by acting in this way, denies what he himself taught. He bribes the prison guards and escapes. No, Crito.” And to put it in my own words: “I shall die, Crito. I must die here. I will not escape; I will not flee.”

All who read the works that belong, we might say, to world literature and philosophy—works read by peoples everywhere—admire Socrates. We admire him too. But there is nothing more to it than what I have just told you. Whether Socrates died or did not die, whether he escaped or did not escape, concerned his own person. It would serve as an example. Is it the same with Jesus Christ? I say this because some people draw a parallel between Christ and Socrates. There could be no more misguided a comparison—or, to put it as mildly as possible, no more blasphemous a comparison. My dear friends, whether Socrates died in prison or not has no effect upon humanity beyond providing a fine example. Nothing more.

But whether Christ died upon the Cross or did not die would have—and does have—consequences for the whole of human history: salvation or no salvation. You see, then, how exceedingly great this matter is. Christ is not a mere man. He is not simply a man like some wise man, like Aristides the Just, or a righteous or wise Socrates, or anyone else. No. Christ is the God-Man, and this has consequences. That is why there is such controversy. Scholars may, of course, argue for literary reasons over whether Socrates remained in prison for thirty days or thirty-one. But that is not of very great importance.

They do it for scholarly reasons, to keep their blood circulating, so to speak—to have something to do, if we are honest; to write dissertations, earn degrees, and obtain professorships. But whether the truth about Christ is this way or that way matters greatly. Our salvation is at stake. That is why thousands of volumes have been written about Christ.

Thousands more books will be written, and people will always take a stand toward Jesus Christ, either for Him or against Him. Why? Because He is the God-Man.

“If, in the time of Moses, the lamb drove the Destroyer far away, how much more will the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, set us free from our sins?” Saint Cyril of Jerusalem now begins to give several examples. We shall consider only one, because our time is already over. He says that in the days of Moses, when Moses received the command from God that every family should slaughter a lamb and use its blood to mark the doorframe, then, when the destroying angel came...

When he saw that blood, he would not enter. He would kill the firstborn child of the household. But this would happen among the Egyptians, who did not have the anointing of blood upon their doorframes. These things were symbolic, yet they were also real events. There truly was great lamentation in the homes of the Egyptians, reaching even to Pharaoh’s palace, because all the firstborn died; even the firstborn of the animals died. A dreadful thing! And Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says here: “The blood of a lamb drove away the Destroyer,” meaning the angel. This is written in Exodus 12:23: it kept the destroying angel away. Thank you.

How much more, then, could the blood of Christ set mankind free from sin? For there, in Jesus Christ, we have the prototype, while in the lamb of the Book of Exodus we have the antitype—the typological foreshadowing. Christ is the supreme person, because He is the God-Man, the unique person. Everything He does and accomplishes bears immeasurable weight. And so the blood of Christ upon the Cross sets mankind free from sin. My dear friends, as I bring today’s subject to a close before the feast of Christmas, I would like to tell you—and to ask you—to take all these matters to heart.

Your presence here, so many of you, always moves us deeply. You can be greatly benefited by being here, because when we understand who Jesus Christ is, then we shall celebrate both Pascha and Christmas well. Tell me, please: after hearing these things and learning who Jesus Christ is, how will you celebrate this year? As you did last year and the year before, when you did not know who Jesus Christ is? How will you hear the Christmas Divine Liturgy? How will you receive Holy Communion? In the same way as before, when we did not know who Jesus Christ is?

You see what this knowledge can bring us. This is a great thing. And so, with all my heart, I pray that this knowledge—the knowledge of the Son of God, our Lord, who became an infant, became man, was crucified, and rose again—may become for us a source of deep understanding and true salvation. May God bless you, and I wish you a blessed Christmas.

Έχουν δηλαδή σκανδαλισθεί. Τόσο φοβερό το σκάνδαλο για αυτούς, ώστε να θεωρείται ανυπέρβλητον για να το ξεπεράσουν. Γι' αυτό και δύο χιλιάδες τώρα χρόνια δεν το έχουν ξεπεράσει. Θα μου πείτε, είναι μια κακή στάση αυτή που έχουν; Άλλο θέμα. Αλλά για αυτούς όμως στέκεται ένα ανυπέρβλητο εμπόδιο. Το εμπόδιο: είχαν θρέψει την αντίληψη, γενεές γενεών, ότι ο Μεσσίας είναι εθνικός απελευθερωτής. Συνεπώς, πώς είναι δυνατόν τώρα να είναι Μεσσίας ο Ιησούς, τη στιγμή που είναι ο ίδιος ανίσχυρος να σώσει τον εαυτό του;

Λοιπόν... Να μην αναφέρω τον προφήτη Ησαΐα, για να μην αναφέρω όλους τους άλλους τους προφήτες. Και ο Άγιος Κύριλος παρακάτω αυτή τη δουλειά κάνει. Μας τα αναλύει όλα αυτά τα πράγματα, για να αντιληφθούμε εμείς, αγαπητοί μου, ποιον πιστεύομεν και γιατί εμπήκε η φαινομενική ασθένεια του Σταυρού. Εξάλλου, θα μας το πει παρακάτω ο Άγιος Κύριλος: το πάθος ήτο εκούσιον, θεληματικόν. Τόσο θεληματικόν, ώστε ο αυτός ο Απόστολος Πέτρος —δεν πειράζει να ξαναφωνούμε πιο κάτω αυτά και να τα πάλι λέγομε— αυτός ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, όταν ο Κύριος είπε «Ιδού αναβαίνομεν εις Ιεροσόλυμα», «Ίλεώς σοι, Κύριε», λέει ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, «ίλεώς σοι». Μα τέλος πάντων, δεν καταλαβαίνεις ότι οι Ιουδαίοι θέλουν να σε κακοποιήσουν;

Δεν καταλάβαιναν. Μας λέει ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης: «Τότε», λέει, «εμνήσθησαν». Τότε θυμήθηκαν αυτά που τους έλεγε ο Κύριος. Λοιπόν, και ο Κύριος τι κάνει; Λέει στον Πέτρον: «Ύπαγε οπίσω μου, σατανά, ότι ου φρονείς τα του Θεού, αλλά τα των ανθρώπων». Δηλαδή, εγώ θα πάω στα Ιεροσόλυμα, διότι είμαι έτοιμος για την θυσία. «Οπίσω μου, σατανά». Πράγματι, έβλεπε στο πρόσωπο του Πέτρου τον Σατανά. Τη στιγμή εκείνη έγινε το όργανο του Σατανά ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, και μάλιστα έγινε το χωρίς να το καταλαβαίνει ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, διότι εκείνο το φιλάνθρωπον υπέρ του Κυρίου, τι ωραιότερο, τι καλύτερο, τι φιλικότερο;

διαφόρους ναούς. Τι λέτε; Εκείνος που κοινωνεί συχνά σκανδαλίζει τους άλλους; Το σκάνδαλο το έχουνε μέσα τους αυτοί οι άλλοι. Ε, λοιπόν, με αυτή την έννοια ο Χριστός είναι σκάνδαλο. Δεν είναι σκανδαλοποιός ο Χριστός, ούτε σκουλήκι, ούτε φίδι, ούτε... Αλλά το σκάνδαλο υπάρχει μέσα εις τους ανθρώπους. Γι' αυτό και σκανδαλίζονται οι άνθρωποι. Γι' αυτό και ο Χριστός λέγεται Πέτρα Σκανδάλου, που πάρα πολλοί είναι εκείνοι που σκανδαλίστηκαν. Εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι έχουν σκανδαλιστεί εις το πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού. «Τίνα με λέγουσιν οι άνθρωποι είναι τον Υιόν του ανθρώπου;» Τι λένε για μένα;

Η παρουσία σας, που πάντα συγκινεί εμάς, τόσος κόσμος, η παρουσία σας αυτή έχει πολλά πράγματα να ωφεληθεί, διότι όταν κατανοούμε ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, τότε και καλό Πάσχα θα γιορτάσουμε αλλά και καλά Χριστούγεννα. Πέστε μου, σας παρακαλώ, ακούγοντας αυτά και γνωρίζοντας ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, πώς θα γιορτάσετε φέτος; Όπως πέρσι και πρόπερσι, που δεν γνωρίζατε ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός; Πώς θα ακούσετε τη λειτουργία των Χριστουγέννων; Πώς θα κοινωνήσετε; Το ίδιο όπως παλιά, όταν δεν γνωρίζαμε ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς Χριστός;
