Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem rejects both Docetism and the claim that Jesus Christ was naturally conceived by Joseph and Mary. Mary’s question to Gabriel and the angel’s promise of the Holy Spirit’s overshadowing explicitly testify to Christ’s supernatural conception. Christ’s tangible risen body refutes Docetism, while consecrated virginity is honored both within monasticism and among Christians living in the world.

Beloved, we are now in the twelfth catechetical lecture, paragraph thirty-one. We covered a small part of this paragraph last time, but because it has some importance, we will not pass over it; we still have something to say. Let us remember this, brethren, and use it as a weapon in our defense. Let us not tolerate the heretics who teach that Christ’s coming was only an appearance. And let us reject with contempt those who say that the Savior was born of a man and a woman.
They have dared to say that He was born of Joseph and Mary because it is written, “And he took his woman.” But let us remember Jacob, who, before taking Rachel, said to Laban, “Give me my woman.” Although there was only the promise of marriage and they were still in the state before marriage, she was called Jacob’s woman. In the same way, because Mary was betrothed, she was called Joseph’s woman.
Notice the precision of the Gospel when it says, “Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph,” and so forth. Again, when the census took place and Joseph went up to be registered, what does Holy Scripture say? “Joseph also went up from Galilee to be registered with Mary, the woman betrothed to him, who was with child.” She was indeed pregnant, yet it did not say, “with his woman,” but, “with the woman betrothed to him.” “For God sent forth His Son,” Paul says—not born of a man and a woman, but born of a woman alone; that is, of a Virgin.
For we have already shown that even a virgin may be called a woman. He who makes souls virginal was Himself born of a Virgin. Saint Cyril has some very fine arguments here, my beloved, answering those who babble every kind of blasphemy against the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy). First among the heretics, he says, are those who claim that Christ’s coming was only an appearance. These are the well-known Docetists; let us put them aside. But, he says, we must also reject with contempt those who claim that our Savior was born of a man and a woman—that Joseph, in other words...
was the husband of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), and that consequently the birth was natural rather than supernatural. They say this simply because their small, barren minds cannot understand it. In other words, we reject whatever we cannot understand. If only we realized how un-Orthodox, unscientific, and illogical that is! We reject something merely because we do not understand it. I hardly need tell you how many things exist even in the realm of science that we do not understand, yet cannot reject. To reject what we do not understand would be an error of method and an error of logic, committed in the very name of logic.
Here, however, we have confirmation from Holy Scripture. Saint Cyril now responds to this babble which, unfortunately, is widespread in our own time and is directed against the Most Holy Theotokos, concerning Christ’s birth from a Virgin. It is dreadful! Of course, I cannot repeat these things to you. They are not new; what is being said is merely old material chewed over again. I cannot tell you what Porphyry, that pagan, wrote against Christianity, nor what Celsus wrote. And Porphyry’s disciple also wrote deeply blasphemous things against Christ and the Theotokos...
The very same things he wrote continue unchanged to this day on the lips of heretics and enemies of the faith. Out of consideration for your ears, I cannot repeat what they say, though some of you may have heard or read those dreadful, blasphemous words. Saint Cyril asks here: On what do they base this claim? They base it on the following passage from Matthew the Evangelist, Matthew 1:24: “And he took his woman.”
It says, “the woman.” What more do we need? After all, the holy Evangelist himself wrote it. Very well. Do you know one method of interpretation? It is this: if I find a word or phrase in Holy Scripture and isolate it in order to draw an interpretive conclusion, I will certainly fall into error. Why? Because a word does not always have today the meaning it had at that time. Moreover, a passage may present only one aspect of a subject without giving the whole picture. How, then, are we to interpret it? Notice the method we must use: the method employed by the Fathers. Holy Scripture...
interprets Holy Scripture. That is, we turn to parallel passages. For example, how is the word “woman” used? Can the word “woman” refer to a virgin, or does it refer exclusively to a married woman? This is how we must investigate: we gather the parallel passages and see what Holy Scripture says elsewhere. Only then can we interpret correctly, always within the spirit of Holy Scripture—not according to the letter alone, but also according to the spirit. Saint Cyril therefore begins by saying, “Let us remember Jacob.”
As we know, Jacob was deceived by his father-in-law, Laban. Although he loved Rachel and wanted her, Laban used a deception—which there is no need to describe now—and gave him his elder daughter, Leah, instead. Jacob was, of course, then considered married, because the way a marriage took place in those days was rather strange, according to the customs of Mesopotamia at that time. The next morning he realized that the woman was not Rachel but Leah. He protested to his father-in-law: “Why have you deceived me?” Here you see that Jacob himself had deceived his brother Esau.
He is repaid for his deception, even though God ultimately approves what he accomplished through it. But this is not the time to explain that. God approves the outcome of Jacob’s deception of Esau, yet at the same time punishes him for it. It is like the saying in the army: you acted without authorization, but the battle was won. You receive a medal because the battle was won, and you also spend ten days in confinement because you did not ask your officer. You know the situation. This is exactly the same kind of case. Jacob, then, is deceived, and the next morning, as I told you, he protests to his father-in-law. If you ask, “How could such an outrageous thing happen?” let me tell you that the same thing has happened in our own day. I witnessed it myself. Once a man came to the offices of the Metropolis.
They had gotten him slightly drunk and, instead of giving him woman A, they gave him woman B, brethren. Naturally, the man came to the Metropolis to seek a divorce because he had been deceived. And I said to myself: these things did not happen only in the time of Jacob, two thousand years before Christ; they happen today as well. I mention this simply as an interesting story. Jacob then said to his father-in-law Laban, “No, I want you to give me Rachel.” He could not divorce Leah. “Very well,” Laban told him, “you will work for me as many more years as you worked for Leah, and you will receive Rachel too.” Thus, against his will, Jacob ultimately found himself with two wives.
That is the account. Now listen to the expression Jacob used when speaking to Laban: “Give me my woman.” This is Genesis 29:21. “Give me my woman.” Saint Cyril comments: Do you see? She was not yet his woman. Leah was his wife, and now he was asking for the second. Do you see what he calls Rachel? He calls her his woman even though she was not yet his wife. Rachel was still a virgin. Do you see what he called her? He called her his woman: “Give me—give me my woman,” although she was still a virgin. That, then, is the first argument.
Saint Cyril says that this was a state before marriage. Let me read you the phrase: “Although there was only a promise in the first, premarital state, she is called Jacob’s woman. So also Mary,” and so forth. There was only a promise that had been given: “You will receive her.” Yet he calls her his woman. Jacob had to work seven years to receive Rachel, and still he called her his woman, though she was not yet his wife but remained a virgin. “Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee”—to a city of Galilee named Nazareth.
“To a virgin,” Luke the Evangelist says, “betrothed to a man.” Do you see the precision here? What does it say? “To a virgin” who was betrothed—that is, engaged—to a man. Therefore, she was not Joseph’s wife. And when the census took place, Saint Cyril says, and they had to go up to Bethlehem, Joseph also went up to be registered. What does Holy Scripture say? “Joseph also went up from Galilee to be registered with Mary, the woman betrothed to him, who was with child.” She was already pregnant, yet Luke calls her the woman betrothed, engaged, to Joseph.
She was with child. Do you see the precision? Saint Cyril again says here: “She was indeed pregnant.” Yet “it did not say, ‘with his woman,’ but, ‘with the woman betrothed to him.’” It did not say “his wife,” but “his betrothed.” Do you see the precision? Let us continue. Now pay attention to a very beautiful passage from the Apostle Paul. I do not know whether you have ever noticed a reading from the Apostle Paul that is often appointed as the epistle reading for a great feast of the Lord, such as Christmas: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman.”
He does not say, “of a Virgin,” but, “of a woman.” Notice the interpretation here.
Saint Cyril says: “Not born of a man and a woman, but born of a woman alone.” Paul said that He was born of a woman. But does not a woman always give birth? Why, then, say, “born of a woman”? Because he does not mean Joseph together with Mary—that is, a man and a woman—but the woman alone. For, “that is, of a Virgin.” Why say only that He was “born of a woman”? Because, as I say again, even the Greek verb “to beget,” if you will, is properly used of the man, not the woman: “Abraham begot Isaac.” Consequently, how is it here that the...
woman begets? It means that the man is absent. Consequently, in this case the designation “woman” is equivalent to the designation “virgin.” Saint Cyril adds: “For we have already shown that even a virgin may be called a woman.” We have now demonstrated that, in this particular case, whether we say “woman” or “virgin,” the meaning is the same. “For He who makes souls virginal was born of a Virgin.” From a Virgin was born the One who makes souls virginal. “He who makes souls virginal”—that is a beautiful and striking expression. And now we come to paragraph thirty-two.
“Do you marvel at what took place? She who gave birth marveled at it herself.” Are you astonished by what happened? The one to whom it happened was astonished as well; the Theotokos herself marveled. If you are astonished, Saint Cyril says, how much more was she! “For she said to Gabriel, ‘How will this be, since I do not know a man?’” How can this happen to me, since I do not know a man? Do you see? She herself testifies that she does not know a man. The angel is therefore asking of her something beyond the natural order. Here I would like to make a brief observation. It is not directly part of my subject, but it is interesting. It is reckoned that when the Most Holy Theotokos received the Archangel’s visit, she must have been...
fourteen or fifteen years old. She was about that age. Tradition also tells us that she remained in the Temple until she was twelve. And there are many other things, such as the feast we celebrate, the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple; that is what the feast signifies. We also know—and we have said this during the Question Hour—that the Most Holy Theotokos was a marvel of virtue. This was not because God had predetermined that she would simply be that way. Hers was not a passive holiness, but a holiness she acquired through her own labor. So young, and, if you will, already so holy, living in a secluded place such as the sanctuary...
the Holy of Holies in the Temple. Tell me, how did she know that children are born of a father and a mother? Of course, I hardly need tell you that many young women marry without knowing about the relations of marriage. And I hardly need tell you what problems this creates. The Theotokos understood the matter. She says it plainly: “Since I do not know a man.” Therefore, how could a birth take place without a man? Her words are clear—perfectly clear. Do you know what this means? She possessed knowledge, not distorted knowledge. She did not read the sex manuals our children read today, nor did she study anatomical details.
Nor did they study anatomy in the way we teach it to our children in our schools. She possessed knowledge, yet that knowledge did not ravage her purity and chastity. This means, my beloved, that we can know about such matters in a holy way. We can possess knowledge without anatomical details and without anything excessive. Quite simply, our child can know and be properly informed without that knowledge destroying his or her holiness. If such knowledge does cause harm, it means that our child is not being watchful. Knowledge itself is not to blame—unless that knowledge is lurid, filled with temptations and images, and we have placed in the child’s hands books that are...
unacceptable. But knowledge in itself, when presented properly before a Mystery—for it is indeed a Mystery—is not harmful. Not only Holy Matrimony, but life itself is a Mystery. Who can deny that life is a Mystery? It is the deepest Mystery within nature. The transmission of life is something beyond comprehension. And when we bring a child before this knowledge of the Mystery of life, and also before the Mystery that human bodies are members of the body of Christ and temples of the Holy Spirit, this knowledge does not ravage or destroy purity and holiness. And here is the proof!
The Most Holy Theotokos possessed knowledge, yet she was not defiled in any way. That was simply a parenthesis. The Archangel then says: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” He explains how it will happen. Thus, there is no place here for union with a man. The birth is immaculate and undefiled. There will be no involvement of a man. But someone may object: “An immaculate and undefiled birth? Does that mean every birth that occurs naturally is not...
immaculate, but defiled?” Let us make this clear as well: neither the seed nor birth nor anything else is defiled. There is no condemnation of Holy Matrimony here. Far from it! Do you see how interpretation must be done? If I isolate this phrase, I will immediately misunderstand it. How, then, do we interpret it? In the spirit of Holy Scripture. What does the Apostle Paul say? A time will come when heretics, such as the Gnostics, will denounce Holy Matrimony. They will forbid it and speak against it. We possess the spirit of Holy Scripture. Holy Matrimony is not defiled. Christ was not born of a Virgin because Holy Matrimony was defiled. Far from it—far from it!
Why, then? Because sinful desire entered into marital relations. That is the issue. And someone says to me, “The woman is unclean; she must not go to Church for forty days.” What is unclean? The blood? The child she has borne? Is the child she has borne—the child whom, if Baptized at that very moment, we would give Holy Communion—unclean? God forbid! What is unclean? The child? When would that be? If the child were conceived through fornication, outside lawful union and without the blessing of God? It would be exceedingly strange for God to bless Holy Matrimony and yet for its offspring to be unclean. God forbid! It would be as though God planted a tree and blessed it, but then said, “The fruit of this tree is filthy, unclean, and defiled.”
That would be a contradiction. Something else has happened: evil desire has entered in. Evil desire is what renders this whole circumstance of childbirth unclean and the woman unclean. It is not childbirth in itself, nor the child, nor the blood, nor the seed. What does David say in Psalm 50? “For in sins my mother conceived me.” It is the phrase “in sins” that identifies what is blameworthy, not...
the bodily process itself or its fruit. You know that after the desire for the fruit in Paradise, evil desire entered into man, and what was especially afflicted was the generative faculty, that region of the body, and so forth. This is why God clothed us: to protect us and preserve whatever could be preserved, so that we would not be stirred toward evil. That is where the sin lies. But Christ was not born of a Virgin for this reason. Rather, He was born as a sign, as I told you before. The birth was immaculate and undefiled. I say this so that some who remain unmarried will not imagine that they are superior to married people, or that they will enter Paradise...
while the others will go to Hell merely because they are married. Saint Ignatius says, “Take care. You may remain unmarried in honor of the body of Christ, but take care not to become proud.” This is a fearful matter. If you wish, the parable of the ten virgins gives us the answer. All ten were virgins, but five were foolish and five were wise. Therefore, neither Holy Matrimony nor celibacy will admit us into or exclude us from the Kingdom of God. What matters is how each person lives either celibacy or Holy Matrimony. This is the Orthodox teaching. At the First Ecumenical Council, the West maintained that the clergy should be celibate—and its clergy remain celibate to this day. Thank you very much.
There have been many deviations. At that time Hosius of Cordoba—Hosius was his name—the bishop of Cordoba in Spain, rose at the First Ecumenical Council and said, “No, no. The question of Holy Matrimony or celibacy is secondary. Each person should choose whichever he wishes.” This is why we have both celibate and married clergy. A married priest is not unclean. Bishops, too, were married. Saint Spyridon, for example, was married, as were others. But pay attention. Later, when monasticism had flourished, then—for many reasons, many reasons...
so that there would be no children claiming rights over the property of the Church—there arose the familiar phenomenon known in ecclesiastical law as nepotism, meaning favoritism toward nephews and relatives. Nepos means “nephew.” Nepotism means allowing relatives to come and seize what belongs to the Church. And because monasticism had flourished, the Church began to choose from the celibate clergy—pardon me, from the unmarried, from the monks—and make them clergy and bishops. This, then, was a digression. The Church may one day want bishops to be married. Here again we have deviations. The Church may one day return to the earlier arrangement and say that bishops will be married.
Do not be alarmed by this, because that was the ancient praxis, the active life of the Church. The Apostle Peter was married; the Evangelist John was unmarried; and the Apostle Paul was unmarried. Neither state is an obstacle to purity—let us be clear about that. It is another matter that Holy Matrimony is more difficult in one respect, while celibacy is more difficult in another. If both married and unmarried people are watchful, then each path is beneficial and edifying. “Let each remain in the calling in which he was called.” Each person should remain where he has been called. But I insist: Holy Matrimony is not unclean. Whoever calls it unclean is a heretic. This is not my word, but the word spoken through Paul. Therefore, my beloved, Christ’s birth is from a Virgin.
Saint Cyril now presents the witnesses. The Holy Spirit will convict those who deny it. The power of the Most High that overshadowed her will rise in indignation against those who would claim that Christ’s birth was not from a Virgin. Gabriel will stand against them as a witness on the Day of Judgment. Here “stand against” means “oppose.” On the Day of Judgment he will say, “Stop! I am a witness.” The place of the manger that received the Master will put them to shame. The manger itself will shame them.
The shepherds who received the good tidings will bear witness, as will the host of angels who praised and sang: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.” The Temple to which He was brought on the fortieth day will bear witness, as will Symeon the God-receiver, the pair of turtledoves offered on His behalf—offered for Jesus—Symeon, who then took Him into his arms, and the prophetess Anna, who was present. All these will stand as witnesses that Christ was born of a Virgin. And now we proceed to paragraph thirty-three.
Since God bears witness, and the Holy Spirit bears witness with Him, and Christ says, “Why do you seek to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth?” What did Christ Himself say? “Why do you seek to kill Me—a man who has spoken the truth?” Let the heretics who deny His humanity be muzzled. Let the Docetist heretics be silenced. I mentioned them at the beginning, though we did not deal with them in detail. They say that the Incarnation took place only in appearance. Only in appearance! Let them be muzzled, for Christ Himself said, “Why do you seek to kill Me, a man who speaks the truth?” He is truly man, then. For they contradict the One who spoke—Christ—when He said:
“Touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” Did Christ not say, especially after the Resurrection, “Come and touch Me, and see that a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have”? Let the Lord who was born of the Virgin be worshiped, and let those who live in virginity know the crown belonging to their way of life. Let the order of those who live the monastic life also know the glory promised to chastity, and...
to the monastic order. Pay attention here. When you hear this phrase, do not forget that we are precisely in the middle of the fourth century, around AD 350, and Saint Cyril distinguishes between virgins and monastics. That is how things were then. The order of virgins was one thing, and the order of monastics another. The monastics were unquestionably virgins, but the virgins—whether men or women—also lived in the world. Remember the four daughters of Philip the Deacon. Scripture says that they lived in virginity and prophesied.
Remember the Apostle Paul, who says, “If someone has a virgin daughter, let him keep her in his own home and, if possible, let her not be supported by the Church, but let him provide for her, so that the Church may not be burdened.” We therefore have two groups. There are virgins—women and men—who live in virginity at home, go about their work, and so forth, while remaining chaste. And there are men and women living in virginity who follow the monastic life and have withdrawn from the world. Thus, virginity is not found exclusively in monasticism. This is extremely important. I noted it down and drew it out of the text to share it with you for its historical significance.
Do you see? This is very important, because Saint Ignatius, who was martyred in AD 107, speaks about the virgins I mentioned earlier. “Let no one boast,” he says, “if he lives in virginity. It is undertaken in honor of the body of Christ.” And the Evangelist John speaks of virgins in the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, at a time when monasticism did not yet exist. He says that the virgins follow the Lamb and “were not defiled with women.” He means, of course, that they did not fall into fornication, but also remained outside Holy Matrimony, and so forth. What do we see here? Virginity can flourish and blossom even when a person is not a monk.
You may ask me: in the age in which we live, can someone remain a virgin without withdrawing from the world? The difficulties of the times led Christians to identify virginity with monasticism. It was because of the difficulty of the age. Today, someone who wishes to live in virginity usually becomes a monastic. Yet for various reasons—and I am showing you this from history—a man or woman may have had to remain in the world. Perhaps there were insurmountable family obligations, or some other reason made it impossible to become a monk or nun. Despite these insurmountable difficulties, that person remains a virgin while living in the world. Such a person has the reward
and the honor of virginity, provided, of course, that it is not a whim or an eccentricity, and that it does not arise from a loathing of Holy Matrimony or from any of those familiar distortions of genuine virginity. Allow me to add something, even though it does not represent virginity in its fullest sense. When the Holy Forty Martyrs suffered martyrdom, Saint Basil the Great, in the encomium he composed for them, says that they all declared with one voice: “Brothers, let us turn necessity into an offering of honor.” This thought appears very often in the accounts of the martyrs. Let us turn necessity into an offering of honor. In other words, given the situation in which we now find ourselves, what are we to do?
Let us transform that necessity into a noble offering, so that we may receive the crown of martyrdom. I would say that sometimes a young woman or a young man does not marry. The years pass, and marriage does not happen. If they turn necessity into a noble offering—even though genuine virginity does not begin at thirty or fifty, but begins when someone, from youth, desires to remain unmarried—then this has value. That lifelong desire is the ideal and the perfect form. But sometimes someone wishes to marry and, for whatever reason, does not manage to do so, and in the end remains unmarried, whether man or woman. Such people do not run off into fornication or take lovers. Those things are impermissible. They can then turn necessity into a noble offering. Do you know what that means? Do you know how great its value is? Its value is immense. Listen.
First, that person will receive the reward of a virgin, the reward of virginity, because virginity is a virtue. This is not the time to explain why it is a virtue. John Chrysostom explains it in his discourse On Virginity: virtue requires both effort and a free act of the will. Virginity is indeed a fundamental and important virtue, and it provides the ground for many other virtues. But the person must live in virginity rightly. One cannot remain unmarried while sitting in front of the television and enjoying filthy scenes. Such a person is not truly celibate and is not a virgin. He may be unmarried, but he is not a virgin. So he must not watch shameful scenes. The temptations against which he has to struggle are another matter.
That is something different. It is one thing to struggle against temptation, and another to pay money to go and watch it. Those are two different things. I think that is clear. So I remain in virginity and turn necessity into a noble offering. What do I gain? I gain a virtue. And there is another benefit of immense importance. We know that men and women who did not marry, when they saw the years passing but did not turn necessity into a noble offering and embrace the state of celibacy and virginity, began to wither inwardly.
They did not marry, the years passed, they reached forty, then fifty, then sixty, and they still wanted to marry. They reached seventy, then eighty, and were approaching ninety, and still wanted to marry. Do not be surprised by what I am telling you. These things truly happen. What is the result? After the age of thirty or thirty-five, the person begins to develop a particular mentality, what people call the mentality of a confirmed spinster or bachelor. We hear people say—and I will not repeat all such remarks—“Is she not an old maid? How else would you expect her to behave? Is he not a confirmed bachelor?” They become difficult and contrary, jealous, strange in their behavior, and troubled in their disposition. Why?
Because they did not accept what they had become. They did not turn necessity into a noble offering. But the person who does so has a balanced disposition. Such a person is sociable, rejoices with married people, and does not envy them. There is no envy at all; he is genuinely happy for them. Nor does he acquire that embittered mentality associated with an aging unmarried man or woman. All this is a digression from our main subject, but no matter—it concerns important matters, and we should know them. “For we have not been deprived of the dignity of chastity. The Savior spent nine months in the womb of a Virgin, while the Lord lived as a man for thirty-three years.”
“The Virgin was honored through those nine months; how much more may we be honored through many years?” That is, while the Lord remained as an infant in the womb of the Virgin, the Virgin could glory in Him. This is why the text speaks of those nine months. And how much more when this state continues for years, as the Lord’s earthly life continued until the age of thirty-three. So we too, he says, may glory—glory in the Lord—and take honorable pride in having remained virgins for many years. We now come to the final paragraph of this entire catechesis, the thirty-fourth. It is exceedingly beautiful because it has a practical character, and all of us should pay close attention to it: “By the grace of God, let us all run the path of chastity,”
“young men and virgins, elders together with the young.” Therefore, by the grace of God, let us all walk the path of God, the path of chastity: young men and virgins, elders together with the young. All of us, married and unmarried, must walk the path of chastity. All these things serve many purposes. The Most Holy Theotokos was a Virgin, as I told you, and this was the central and fundamental sign by which the Messiah was to be recognized. Yet how many other purposes it also serves! Before the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, the married woman prays, because the Most Holy Theotokos is a mother. And the virgin prays there as well.
She is the Virgin beyond all virgins, the Virgin Mother above all. Thus the Most Holy Theotokos gathers everyone to herself. She gathers them all because her person embraces all these aspects, and this fact has immense moral and spiritual significance. Saint Cyril continues: “Let us not pursue wantonness.” We must not give ourselves over to sexual immorality. “But as we praise the name of Christ, let us not disregard the glory of chastity.” Let us not set aside the glorious dignity of chastity. Do you know how little chastity and virginity are honored in our age? People mock them.
Swine mock those who are pure and chaste. Forgive me for putting it this way, but those who wallow in the mud—licentious and filthy people who have tried every kind of perversion—insult the chaste and those living in virginity, mocking them as though they were the perverted ones. What degradation! What a wretched condition! “For the crown is angelic, and the achievement is beyond human strength.” The crown is angelic, and the achievement surpasses human power, because no one can attain it without the grace of God. “Without Me you can do nothing,” says the Lord. “Let us spare our bodies, which are destined to shine like the sun.” Let us have mercy on our bodies and not surrender them to sexual immorality.
After the Resurrection, they are destined to shine and be glorified like the sun, just as the body of Christ shone at the Transfiguration. “Let us not defile so great and precious a body for the sake of a fleeting pleasure.” Our body is so great and precious; it is a member belonging to God, a member of the body of Christ. Let us not defile it for the sake of a small pleasure. “For sin is brief and lasts but a moment, while the shame endures for many years and into eternity.” Sin lasts only a little while, but its punishment is eternal. We are speaking here of sexual immorality, not of Holy Matrimony. “Those who cultivate chastity are angels walking upon the earth. Virgins have their portion with Mary the Virgin.” Those who live in virginity share their portion with the Virgin Mary. “Let all adornment be banished.” Let us cast away every kind of ostentatious adornment. He does not mean that we should not wash and iron our clothes, comb our hair, or wear shoes and socks. Those are elementary things. What does the Lord say? “Anoint your head”—that is, groom yourself—“and wash your face,” so that others will not see that you are fasting because you have left your hair unwashed and dirty. This means that I will wash myself
and dress properly, and I will iron my clothes, but I will avoid ostentatious adornment. What does such adornment mean? By analogy, we might call it fashion-conscious display. Not fashion. Let things be simple, decent, and attractive, but simple—not ostentatious. “And let every wanton glance and every affected public promenade be banished.” What can I say about the wanton glance, my dear friends? It is what we encounter in the street. We paid the compulsory charge for public television whether we watched it or not; then we bought a television, even a color one, so that late at night we could watch and enjoy—what? Sin!
The Lord told us to turn our eyes away when we encounter a temptation we did not prepare for ourselves. Yet we go out and buy the means and the machines—televisions, cinema tickets, and who knows what else—and pay to watch sin. Is this permissible for Christians? Is it? “And every affected public promenade.” Ah, those promenades, that endless walking back and forth along the streets where young people parade themselves as though at a marriage market—Kouma Street, as you call it, and the town squares. In villages it is the square and the central road: back and forth, back and forth. I will say no more; I am ashamed. “And every elaborate outfit,” of course, “and enticing perfumes.” Those perfumes that make us ask, “Who just passed by?”
Someone gets onto the bus, whether woman or man, and the whole place smells of that perfume. “Let the prayer of spiritual fragrance, good deeds, and the sanctification of our bodies be incense for everyone, so that the Lord who was born of a Virgin may say of us—of chaste men and crowned women—‘I will dwell in them and walk among them; I will be their God, and they shall be My people.’” Yes, the Christian has a fragrance of his own. My dear friends, when little children used to return from school—those were some of the beautiful days of the past, though not merely because they belonged to the past—
for that would be mistaken. The old days simply had certain beautiful qualities. When we came home, especially during our first year of primary school, our parents wanted to help us love school by using all sorts of pleasant little expressions. As we returned, they would say, “Oh, what a fragrance! How sweet my child smells! How sweet my little schoolchild smells!” To tell you the truth, I could never discover what fragrance I supposedly had. I grew up and still did not understand what they had smelled. It was a little device to tell me that I carried a fragrance and that the place I was going to had value, because I came away from it with that fragrance. Yet, my dear friends—no, I am mistaken. I really did carry a fragrance, just as you did.
A diligent child goes off to school with a schoolbag, clean books, lessons prepared, and an earnest attitude—and that child gives off a fragrance. What else can we call it? It is a sweet spiritual fragrance. That is why Holy Scripture says that we are the fragrance of Christ. Does not a beautiful and chaste person have a fragrance? Does not a diligent and upright person carry a fragrance? Such a person has a distinctive spiritual fragrance. Does not a Saint have a fragrance? I mean spiritually, of course—though I could say something further: sometimes it is perceptible even to the senses. The holy relics, especially, quite often give off a fragrance that can be physically perceived by the sense of smell. What does all this mean? It means that I must become—
through sanctification—a spiritual fragrance, the fragrance of Christ. Then Christ, who is the true fragrance, will say, “I will dwell in them and walk among them.” I will come and dwell within them, and I will walk among them—that is, I will act dynamically within their lives—“and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” This, my dear friends, is the beauty of the Christian faith. This is its beauty: Christ came into the world, born of a woman, born of a virgin, to bring us all these great messages. And Saint Cyril concludes: “To Him be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.”

την αξία, αρκεί βεβαίως η παρθενία να μην είναι καπρίτσιο, να μην είναι ιδιοτροπία, να μην είναι γιατί βδελύσσεται κάποιος τον γάμον και όλα εκείνα τα γνωστά που είναι έκτροπα μιας γνησίας παρθενίας. Ας μου επιτραπεί και κάτι, παρότι δεν είναι πάρα πολύ γνήσιο, αλλά ας μου επιτραπεί να το πω. Όταν εμαρτύρησαν οι Άγιοι Τεσσαράκοντα Μάρτυρες, στο εγκώμιον που πλέκει ο Μέγας Βασίλειος γι' αυτούς, λέγει ότι έλεγαν δι' ενός στόματος οι μάρτυρες: «Ποιήσωμεν, αδελφοί, την ανάγκην φιλοτιμίαν». Είναι δε μια θέσις που πάρα πολύ συχνά λέγεται στο μαρτυρολόγιο. Ας κάνουμε την ανάγκη φιλοτιμία, δηλαδή αυτό που τώρα, στην κατάσταση που βρισκόμεθα, τι να κάνουμε;
Γιατί δεν παντρεύτηκαν, πέρασαν τα χρόνια, πήγαμε στα 40, πήγαμε στα 50, πήγαμε στα 60, ακόμη επιθυμούμε να παντρευτούμε. Πήγαμε στα 70, πήγαμε στα 80, πλησιάζουμε τα 90, ακόμη επιθυμούμε να παντρευτούμε. Μη σας κάνει εντύπωση αυτό που σας λέγω. Είναι πραγματικότητες. Αποτέλεσμα; Ο άνθρωπος να αρχίσει να αποκτάει μετά τα 30 του, τα 35 του χρόνια ειδική ψυχολογία που λέγεται γεροντοκορισμός ή γεροντοπαλικαρισμός. Όταν λέμε — δεν θα τα λέω — «γεροντοκόρη δεν είναι; Πώς αλλιώτικα θα συμπεριφερθεί; Γεροντοπαλίκαρο δεν είναι;» Δηλαδή στριμμένοι, ζήλιες, συμπεριφορά περίεργη, ψυχολογία δύσκολη. Γιατί;
