Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that nothing in the human body is inherently impure, because God created Adam and Eve and sexual sin alone defiles both body and soul. Prophecies from Hosea and Micah affirm Christ’s true humanity, the coming birth of the Messiah, and the faithful remnant that will recognize Him. Saint Cyril defends the Virgin Birth against pagan and Jewish objections by contrasting it with Greek myths and recalling biblical miracles such as Sarah’s conception, Moses’ leprous hand, and the staff transformed into a serpent.

My dear friends, we are now in paragraph 26 of the twelfth Catechetical Lecture of Saint Cyril, Bishop of Jerusalem. We have already examined part of this paragraph, where he says that the Son of God felt no revulsion at coming into contact with human nature. Saint Cyril says, “There is nothing impure in the human constitution.” There is nothing defiled or filthy in it.
“There is nothing impure in the human constitution, unless adultery and licentiousness defile it. He who fashioned Adam also fashioned Eve, and male and female were formed by divine hands.” How are the human body and its members defiled? Only through sin, only through immorality. Notice here Saint Cyril’s precise choice of words, which might otherwise pass unnoticed. He says, “Unless adultery and licentiousness defile it.” He does not mention theft, blasphemy, or murder, but specifically adultery and licentiousness. What does this mean? It means what the Apostle Paul says: “Every sin that a person commits is outside the body, but whoever commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.” Clearly, then, sins of the flesh defile both the soul and the body. Why these sins alone defile the body as well, while other sins do not defile the members of the body, is truly a mystery. So we see here that it is primarily sins of the flesh that defile the body—and, of course, the soul—and that God made Adam with divine hands and Eve with divine hands.
“Male and female were formed.” God made both man and woman and, consequently, everything that distinguishes the two sexes. Therefore, nothing is impure. “None of the members of the body, as originally fashioned, is impure.” There is nothing defiled or filthy in the members of the body as God originally created them. “Let all the heretics who condemn the body be silenced—or rather, those who condemn the very One who fashioned it.” Let all the heretics who accuse the body be muzzled, he says, because they are really accusing the Creator of the body when they say that this is impure...
that is impure, and so on. “But we remember Paul, who says: ‘Do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you?’” As the Apostle says in First Corinthians, chapter 6, verse 19, do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit? My dear friends, the New Testament gives us two fundamental teachings about the body. Both are found in this same apostolic passage from the Apostle Paul: our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, that is, a temple of God; and it is a member of the Body of Christ. It is a temple of God because the Spirit of God dwells within us.
It is a member of the Body of Christ because, when we receive Holy Communion—that is, when we receive the Body of Christ—we become members of the Body of Christ, which is the Church. You can therefore understand clearly that a person does not have absolute rights over his own body. Where are those frenzied women who raised placards and banners, shouting that no one can forbid us from doing whatever we want with our bodies, because our bodies are our own property? To begin with, my dear friends, even if we were not Christians, no such right would exist.
That position is utterly irrational. Let me put it in practical terms, outside the Christian setting. Someone begins cutting himself to pieces because that is what he wants. He slashes his veins, and when another person comes to save him, he says, “Stay back. I have the right to do what I want with my body.” What sensible person would leave him to commit suicide and refuse to save him merely because the suicidal man claims that he has rights over his own body? What sensible person, what sensible society, would do such a thing—even outside Christianity? Within Christianity, from the moment we are baptized,
we do not belong to ourselves. The Apostle Paul says this plainly in the same chapter where he says that we are members of the Body of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit: “You are not your own, for you were bought at a price.” You do not belong to yourselves; you have been purchased at a price, and that price is Christ’s sacrifice. Therefore, my dear friends, we would say that the believer has no independent claim even over his own existence, to say nothing further. Our entire being belongs to God. And if you wish, even apart from the Christian framework, we belong to God twice over: first, because we are His creatures; and second, because we were redeemed by the blood of Christ upon the Cross. We were bought back.
Therefore, we belong to God twice over. Someone may object: “What? Especially in an age when we question every established authority and ask, ‘What is divine? Who is God? Why? How?’” Whether you want it or not, you belong to God. Shall I prove it to you, my brother? Pay attention. Can you say to God, whose possession you are, that you do not want to die? “I do not want to die. My life belongs to me. It is mine.” It is not yours. Who has ever said that and succeeded? Death exists. This means that my life is held in God’s hands and belongs to Him. Do you want to go one step further? Can you say, “You have no right, O God, to cast me into Hell”? Yet He can cast me into Hell.
These two examples are enough. Even if people do not believe the second, the first is plainly evident. Can anyone say, “I intend to keep my life”? How can you say that? You cannot. Another has authority over your life and can take it whenever He wills. Another has authority over your life. Therefore, my dear friends, we have been bought by God. We belong to God twice over. We have no absolute right over our body, our life, or our very existence. But you may ask, “What does that mean? Have we been purchased like slaves in ancient times?” No. This purchase is liberation. That is the remarkable thing.
What would I do with my body if it were left entirely to me? I would destroy it. So God comes and purchases me with His own blood upon the Cross in order to set me free. This redemption is liberation. Yes, therefore, it is true freedom. Freedom is not shouting, “We have the right to do whatever we want with our bodies.” And then there is the question of abortion, where these same frenzied women again cry, “It is my right.” What right of yours? Is the child you carry your property, something you own? You are mistaken.
Moreover, the law protects the child carried within your womb in matters of inheritance and taxation. It is another human being. You have no right over someone else’s existence. The child is not your property. The child belongs to God, both before birth and afterward, once born. The child is not your property. This is why abortion has always been condemned since ancient times. How beautifully Hippocrates expresses this in his oath. He tells the physician, “You shall not give a destructive drug” to bring about an abortion—a drug that destroys life. And the Didache of the Apostles says, “You shall not destroy a child.” Here this has two applications: abortion and the sexual abuse of young children.
But here it refers primarily to abortion. You shall not destroy a child in any way. The child is not your possession. And so, my dear friends, this redemption by God is sweet. It is liberation. This is tremendously important. Our body belongs to the Holy Spirit as His dwelling place, and as a member of the Body of Christ it belongs to Christ. “And elsewhere it is written, ‘Therefore He shall give them up.’” Again, the prophet foretold in the person of Jesus: “My flesh is from them.” This is found in Hosea 9:12, and it means:
“My flesh comes from them.” Who says this? The prophet speaks in the person of the Messiah. In other words, the Messiah says, “My flesh comes from them.” From whom? From human beings. Do you know what all this reveals? The true Incarnation of the Son of God. Do you know how important this is? Saint Cyril will explain it more fully two paragraphs from now. “And elsewhere it is written: ‘Therefore He shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor gives birth.’” This is in the Prophet Micah, chapter 5, verse 2. To what does He give them up? If we took the entire prophecy, it would mean that He would give the Israelites over to captivity and various afflictions until the woman who is to give birth should come. Let me read it again: “And He shall give them up”—to national afflictions—“until the time when she who is in labor gives birth.” They will endure what they must endure until the hour comes for her to give birth. To whom? To the Messiah. Saint Cyril now asks, “And what is the sign?” The woman giving birth is clearly the Theotokos, as you understand. “And what sign follows?” The prophecy continues: “She shall give birth, and the rest of their brethren shall return.” She shall give birth,
and the rest of their brethren shall return. When he says “the rest” here, he means the remnant—the Greek word leimma, spelled lambda, epsilon, iota with a circumflex, double mu, alpha. It means the portion of the population that remains, the remnant of the people. Which remnant? Those who have remained faithful. They will return, he says; they will recognize the Messiah. Do you see? “And what are the betrothal pledges of the Virgin?” Notice Saint Cyril’s conversational way of presenting this; he is truly wonderful. “And what are the betrothal pledges of the Virgin, the holy Bride?” What, he asks, are the betrothal pledges of the Virgin, the holy Bride?
What are these pledges? Betrothal pledges are tokens of an engagement, such as the ring and the gifts exchanged when two people are betrothed. This is not Holy Matrimony; it is what we would call an engagement. It is not the wedding, but the betrothal. So what are its pledges? They are whatever makes the betrothal known—the ring, as I said, and the gifts exchanged. “And I will betroth you to Myself in faith.” What, then, are the gifts of the bride, the pledges of the bride? Saint Cyril goes on to quote the Prophet Hosea, chapter 2, verse 22: “And I will betroth you...
to Myself in faith.” I will betroth you to Myself—“to Myself in faith.” Who is being betrothed here? God betroths the Virgin to Himself. And what is the pledge? Faith. Pay attention to what follows. “And Elizabeth, speaking to her, likewise says: ‘Blessed is she who believed, for there shall be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’” This is from Luke 1:45. Blessed is the woman who believes that what was promised to her will indeed come to pass. This refers to the Theotokos. What did Elizabeth say, for example?
She said, “How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to visit me?” Listen: “the mother of my Lord.” The mother. You know that they were cousins and that there was a great difference in their ages. The Theotokos was about fifteen years old, while Elizabeth must have been elderly, since she was barren and had not borne children. Indeed, she gave birth to John miraculously. She may have been seventy or eighty; there was a very great difference in age between them. And yet, my dear friends, she says, “How is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should visit me?” Whom does she call the Lord? The One whom her cousin, the Theotokos, carries within her womb.
And she expands on this, saying, “I say this because the child within my own womb, John, leaped for joy and made known to me that his Lord is within the womb of my cousin Mary, the Theotokos.” This is astonishing, my dear friends. And notice how she calls blessed the woman who believed. What was it, then, that set the Theotokos upon the path of the Incarnation of the Son of God? It was faith—the betrothal pledge, the gift. We have explained what these pledges are: the gifts exchanged between two persons, especially between those who are betrothed.
He gives a gift to her, and she gives a gift to him. What, then, is the gift here? Pay attention. What does God ask for? He asks for faith. What does the Archangel Gabriel say to the Theotokos? He tells her, “The Holy Spirit...” She asks, “How will this happen to me?” He replies, “The Holy Spirit will visit you,” because she has said, “I know not a man.” “The Holy Spirit will visit you, and He shall be called the Son of the Most High,” and so forth. And what did the Theotokos say? “Let it be to me according to your word.” May it happen to me as you have said. Whatever God wills. “Behold, behold the handmaid of the Lord.” What, then, did the Theotokos offer? She offered faith. There are the betrothal pledges; there is the gift. What gift?
A gift exchanged between two persons. Which persons? God and the human person—namely, the Theotokos, the Most Holy Theotokos. Would you like to see how beautifully our hymnography expresses this? I had not had these hymns in mind, but on the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple—more precisely, on its eve—I heard two troparia. The first is from Vespers on the eve of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, and the second is a troparion from the Fifth Ode of the Pre-festal Canon for the Entry. As the chanters sang them, I heard them and, since I was preparing this subject, I took the Menaion, copied them out, and will now read them to you.
The first troparion:
“O Virgin, faithfully nourished with heavenly bread in the temple of the Lord, you brought forth for the world the Bread of Life, the Word (Logos).” In other words: “You who were nourished with bread in the Holy of Holies, in the temple of the Lord, are the one who gave birth for the world to the Bread of Life, the Word of God.”
It continues: “As a chosen and spotless temple, you were mystically betrothed beforehand through the Spirit and became the Bride of God the Father.” Listen to that!
First, notice the word “mystically.” Second: “You were betrothed beforehand through the Spirit.” It does not say simply, “You were betrothed,” but, “You were betrothed beforehand.” That is, the Holy Spirit came to announce your betrothal. “You became the Bride of God the Father.” Third, here you became the Bride of God the Father. And then: “You brought forth the Word”—you gave birth to the Word. In other words, the Holy Spirit brings about the betrothal beforehand, the Theotokos becomes the Bride of the Father, and she gives birth to the Word. But do not interpret this in crudely human terms. Let us understand it as the Angel expressed it. The Angel said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you.”
“The power of the Most High will overshadow you.” The Holy Spirit will overshadow you. Who is the Most High? The Father. The text does not say, “the Most High,” but, “the power of the Most High.” The Spirit will come; that is, through the Holy Spirit all these things will take place, including the Incarnation. And the power of the Most High will come to dwell within you—that is, God the Word, for God the Word is also called the power of God. And the Most High is the Father. Thus the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—all three Persons—take part in the Incarnation of God the Word. And using human imagery, the sacred hymnographer says: “You were betrothed beforehand through the Spirit and became the Bride of God the Father.”
“You brought forth the Word”—you gave birth to the Word. And the other troparion says: “The Holy Spirit sanctified you wholly as you dwelt within the temple and were nourished with heavenly food, O most beautiful Bride of the Father; therefore you also became the Birthgiver of the Word.” In other words, the Holy Spirit sanctified you completely while you lived within the temple and were nourished with heavenly food. O most beautiful and radiant Bride of the Father, you became the Birthgiver of the Word. It is the same teaching: here again we see the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit sanctifies her; she is the Bride of the Father and the Birthgiver of the Word. What, then, do we see here? That the Theotokos offered her faith. This is something exceedingly beautiful, especially as it is expressed, as I told you, in our sacred imagery and hymnography. I now proceed to paragraph 27. I shall read it to you in full and then explain it in simple words, for Saint Cyril himself says: “I know that what I am saying is unworthy of the present hearing.” I know, he says, that I am saying things unworthy for you to hear. I shall offend your ears by speaking of such unworthy things. But I shall tell them to you because you need to know them. I shall read it now.
“Both the Greeks and the Jews ridicule us and say that it is impossible for Christ to have been born of a Virgin. Let us silence the Greeks by appealing to their own myths. You who say that stones cast upon the ground were changed into human beings—how can you claim that it is impossible for a Virgin to give birth?”
These words are addressed to them. Let me tell you once again: when the Fathers speak here of “the Greeks,” they do not mean the Greek people. It was a technical term denoting pagans. In other words, “Greek” meant “pagan,” not someone Greek by descent or ethnicity. I am telling you this so that you will bear it in mind and not misunderstand. Saint Cyril says that both the Greeks and the Jews ridicule us and claim that it is impossible for a man—Christ—to be born of a Virgin. Indeed, I have often heard people from Asia Minor say that the Turks, being
Muslims, naturally denied the Virgin Birth. And they would speak most irreverently, just as, unfortunately, many Greeks do, saying, “So, did the Most Holy Theotokos smell a lily and become pregnant?” This is an utterly irreverent claim that reveals the deepest ignorance. My beloved, let me also resolve any question you may have. The lily shown in images of the Annunciation in the hand of the Archangel Gabriel does not appear in Byzantine icons. Think of the Byzantine icons you have seen: the Archangel Gabriel does not hold a lily. The angel holding a lily appears only in Western-style images. The lily is simply an artistic device—I repeat, an artistic device invented by the painter to express what he wishes to convey. What is that? The lily is white and therefore expresses the Virgin’s purity. The lily is fragrant and therefore expresses that the Theotokos bears the fragrance of Christ. And what else? A lily bears many flowers upon one stem, signifying the abundance and multitude of the Theotokos’s virtues. It is simply an artistic device, and one found
only in the West, used to express what we have just said: the virginity, purity, and virtues of the Theotokos. It does not mean that the Archangel Gabriel gave the Theotokos a lily to smell, or anything of the kind. No. Why, then, do people say such things in mockery? If Muslims say it, let them have their way; they are unbelievers and strangers to the faith. But is it acceptable for Greeks who are Orthodox Christians to say such a thing? Even if it were truly a question troubling them, they ask it with laughter and irreverence. If it were an honest question, we all have many questions.
We should raise our questions reverently, not laugh irreverently at this sacred matter. And so, my beloved,
he says, they tell us that it is impossible for a human being to be born of a Virgin. Very well, then: I shall silence you using your own myths. Tell me, what do your myths say about the multiplication of humanity after the floods? “You who say that stones cast upon the ground were changed into human beings—how can you claim that it is impossible for a Virgin to give birth?” You claim that Deucalion cast stones behind him and that they turned into people, and you say this is how the human race arose. Yet at the same time you tell us that it is impossible for a Virgin to give birth.
Is it not easier for a Virgin to give birth than for stones to become human beings? And do you not also tell us that a daughter can spring from someone’s head? For Zeus brought forth Athena from his head. According to the myth, Hephaestus was angry with him and struck him on the head with his axe, splitting open the head of Zeus, and from it sprang the goddess Athena. “You who tell the myth that a daughter was born from a head—how can you claim that it is impossible for a son to be born from a virginal womb?” On the one hand, you say that a person came forth from the head of Zeus; on the other, you deny the Virgin Birth.
Or take that other myth, in which Dionysus comes forth from the thigh of Zeus. “You falsely claim that Dionysus was carried in the thigh of your Zeus. How, then, can you reject what is true among us?” You who say that Dionysus came forth from the thigh of Zeus—how can you deny what for us is a truth? Thus the Greeks remain bound to their myths, while they cannot ultimately deny the miracle of Christ’s birth from a Virgin. But let us now turn to those of the circumcision, the Jews.
This is paragraph 28: “Answer those of the circumcision in this way, by asking them: Which is more difficult—for a barren old woman, long past the way of women, to bear a child, or for a young Virgin to give birth?”
“Though the way of women had ceased for her, she gave birth contrary to nature. Therefore, both for a barren woman to give birth and for a Virgin to give birth are contrary to nature. Either reject both or accept both. For it is the same God who accomplished that miracle and brought this one to pass. You would not dare say that it was possible for God there but impossible for Him here.” His arguments are magnificent and deeply relevant to us. You Jews accept that Sarah gave birth even though she was barren, elderly, and long past the way of women, with no natural ability to bear a child. You accept this and call it a miracle. Quite rightly.
And you rightly say that God brought about this miracle. God had made a promise to Abraham, yet He did not fulfill it immediately. He allowed Sarah to grow older and older precisely so that the miracle would be unmistakably established. So you accept that. Which, then, is more difficult: for a young Virgin to give birth, or for a woman to conceive by the natural means, certainly, but when she is ninety years old and no longer capable of bearing children? You will tell me that Sarah’s case was a miracle. Yes, indeed. And I tell you that the other is also a miracle. How can you say that God worked the one miracle
but did not work the other? You must either accept both or reject both. If you reject the Virgin Birth, you are also obliged to reject the birth of Isaac from Sarah, who was barren and old. But if you do not reject that birth, you must necessarily accept the second miracle as well, because God truly has the power to accomplish both. You yourself say that God is all-powerful. Why, then, is God able to act in the one case but not in the other? Saint Cyril continues his arguments, which are very beautiful. At the same time, you know, we discover many passages in the Old Testament that we come to understand as symbols of the Theotokos.
They present the Theotokos typologically. “Again, by what natural process can a human hand be changed in a single instant into another form and then restored? How, then, did the hand of Moses become white as snow and immediately afterward return to its former state?” “You say that God willed it and changed it. If God can act there because He wills it, is He unable to act here? That was a sign given only to the Egyptians, but this is a sign bestowed upon the whole world.”
When Moses doubted whether the mission God had entrusted to him would succeed—the mission of going to Egypt, asking Pharaoh to release the people, two million souls, and leading them out of Egypt—he said, “How will Pharaoh believe me? How will he believe me?” God said to him, “Show Me your hand.” So Moses held out his hand. “Do you see it?” “I see it,” Moses replied. “Put it inside your garment.” Moses put it in and then drew it out. The words “white as snow” meant leprous, because leprosy turns the skin white. In other words, his healthy hand became leprous,
in one or two seconds. He put it inside his garment and drew it out again. “You will show them your hand becoming leprous even though it was healthy. Then you will put it back inside your garment, draw it out, and it will be healthy once more.” This would be the sign, the miracle he would show Pharaoh as proof that he had been sent by God. Saint Cyril now asks, “What do you say, then, O Jew?” The Jew will reply, “Yes, God was able to do that because He willed it. God did it there because He wished to.” But could God not do this as well if He willed it? He could do it there, but could He not do it here—the birth from a Virgin of a man,
the Son of God? Saint Cyril continues: “O Jews, which is more difficult: for a Virgin to give birth, or for a staff to be given life and become a living creature? It is acknowledged that, in the time of Moses, a perfectly straight staff became a fearsome serpent before the man who had cast it down; and the man who had formerly held the staff fled from it as from a dragon, for in truth it had become a dragon. He fled, not because he feared the staff he had once held, but because he trembled before what it had become. The staff had teeth and the eyes of a dragon. If seeing eyes can grow from a staff, can a child not be born from a virginal womb when God so wills?” What do you say to that?
As a second sign from God, Moses took the straight staff he was holding and cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent. Tell me, Saint Cyril says, how did that dry piece of wood receive life and become a serpent? How did it come alive? It even acquired the eyes of a dragon: eyes appeared, and it could see. It had a mouth and, indeed, it swallowed what Pharaoh’s magicians had produced. Saint Cyril is saying that this dry branch, this staff, became a serpent and acquired eyes that could see, as well as a mouth and teeth. Yet now, if God wills it, can He not cause a man to be formed in a virginal womb? God willed the former; why do you deny the latter? You accept one and reject the other. He continues: “I will not even speak of Aaron’s staff, which accomplished in one night what other trees take many years to do. For everyone knows that a staff which has lost its bark will never grow naturally, even if it is placed amid rivers. But because God does not submit to the nature of trees, but is Himself the Maker of all natures, the barren, dry, barkless staff
blossomed, put forth shoots, and bore almonds. Therefore, since God granted the staff a fruit beyond nature for the sake of the typological high priest, did He not also grant the Virgin to give birth for the sake of the true High Priest?” This concerns Aaron’s staff, and the entire people were witnesses. They brought twelve staffs, one from each of the twelve tribes of Israel, and placed them in the Tabernacle of Witness according to God’s command. These were, of course, dry staffs. When someone uses a branch as a staff, it is no longer fresh; it has dried out. Indeed, to make a staff, we leave the wood to dry, and we may even strip off its bark, as Saint Cyril mentions here. Notice that detail: the bark had been stripped away.
What trees accomplish in the course of a year—namely, bearing fruit—Aaron’s staff accomplished in a single night. In one night it put forth leaves, blossoms, and almonds.
He says, “A dry staff which has lost its bark will never grow naturally, even if it is placed between rivers with abundant water.” It will never put forth shoots. How could such a thing happen? Yet it did. And what did Aaron’s staff prefigure? It pointed to the typological high priest, Aaron, the man who was to serve as high priest. It showed that God had chosen Aaron, from the tribe of Levi, to be the high priest. He was typological; that is, he belonged to the type. A type of what? The whole Old Testament is a type of the New Testament.
Aaron is called the typological high priest because who is the prototype, the true High Priest? Jesus Christ. Aaron’s staff blossomed in order to reveal the typological high priest; would the Virgin, then, not give birth in order to reveal the prototype and true High Priest, Jesus Christ? I think these arguments are very beautiful. But I want to dwell on something in this paragraph that is especially striking. Notice what Saint Cyril says in passing: “Because God does not submit to the nature of trees, but is Himself the Maker of all natures,” and so forth. God does not follow the nature of trees, he says, because He is the Maker of nature.
My beloved, I would like to comment on this. Some people say that a miracle is impossible because it goes beyond the laws of nature. What should we answer? Why should a miracle be impossible? Who made the laws of nature? God is their Maker. Therefore, He is their Lord. Yet you make God a prisoner of the laws of nature and say that no miracle can ever occur, because God must obey the natural laws that He Himself created. How could that possibly be? Who made the laws of nature? God did. God is the Maker of nature. Therefore, you cannot say
that because God created the whole natural order and established it through natural laws, He has now become powerless and bound by His own creation. How could that possibly be? God is free. Therefore, without abolishing the laws of nature or destroying nature itself, He simply sets its ordinary course aside in order to reveal what He wills: the miracle. What is the natural course? That human beings are born in the familiar way. God sets aside that natural course to reveal the miracle. What miracle? That He who is the eternal God, the very Maker of creation, should be born from a Virgin. For God the Word (Logos) made the universe. He Himself now sets aside the natural laws—
He does not abolish them, but sets them aside—and comes to take material from the womb of a Virgin and become man. Now we come to paragraph twenty-nine: “These arguments drawn from the staff are good, but the Jews still object and are not persuaded by them unless they are convinced by a birth that is likewise wondrous and beyond nature. Question them, then, in this way.” This is how you should examine the Jews when you meet them and they deny these things. Now consider Eve. Pay attention, for this is Saint Cyril’s strongest argument, and it is deeply theological.
“From whom was Eve born in the beginning? What mother conceived her who had no mother? What mother conceived the motherless one? Scripture says that she came from Adam’s side.” That is what Scripture says. Eve was not born, but was created from Adam’s side. “If Eve came forth from the side of a man without a mother, can a child not be born from a virginal womb without a man? Answer Me!” In other words, Eve was created from Adam’s side.
Can a Son, then, not be born of a virginal mother? You, the Jew, accept that Eve came directly from Adam, without birth. How, then, can you deny that a Virgin is able to give birth? Indeed, which is easier, for a Virgin to give birth? Which is more difficult: to take material from a man and make a human being without the involvement of a woman? I think Saint Cyril’s argument is powerful. And do you know where its power lies? The Jew believes in the Old Testament but rejects the New Testament. If, then, we take the birth of Eve as an argument from the faith of the Old Testament, the truth becomes evident.
Now comes something especially beautiful and deeply theological. Pay close attention!
“The male sex owed a debt of grace to the female sex. For Eve was born from Adam, conceived by no mother, but brought forth from a man alone. Mary repaid this debt of grace: not receiving from a man, but by herself giving birth in purity, through the Holy Spirit and by the power of God.” How beautiful is the vision of the Fathers! What they perceive, my beloved—what profound theological truths! The meaning is this: when God took material, He took a rib, material from Adam, and made Eve, the woman.
In order for the woman to be created, she borrowed her material, her bodily substance, from the man. Thus the woman remained indebted to the man. Now the Theotokos comes and repays that debt: without receiving anything from a man, she gives a man in return. In other words, she returned the material, and the new Adam was now formed. It is truly magnificent, if you have understood it. As a woman, she repays Eve’s debt by giving birth without receiving from a man, but instead giving back to mankind. And the One who is born, Jesus Christ, is the new Adam.
Thus the circle was completed. And now we come to paragraph thirty.
“Let us take an argument greater still.” An even greater argument. “Greater still. For bodies to be born from bodies, though wondrous, is nevertheless possible.” We know that bodies are born from bodies. Yet if you stop to think about it, this too is astonishing; it is an awesome mystery. How does a new being come into existence? It is an awesome mystery indeed. Only those who have studied medicine or biology can begin to approach—not merely the scientific facts, but the mystery itself. It is awe-inspiring. How can a new life come into being? Astonishing! Nevertheless, it is possible. The proof is the way all of us were born.
“But for the dust of the earth to become a human being is more wondrous still.” To take soil and make a human being—that is astonishing. As we were saying today, this would mean taking lifeless matter. That is what they are attempting to do in laboratories: to take lifeless matter and create life. Not a human being, of course, but simply to create life from lifeless matter. Even that has not been achieved. But if it ever is, it will be extraordinary. “For a confused mass of matter to become the membranes and shining pupils of the eyes is more wondrous still. For the hardness of bones, the softness of lungs, and all the various forms of the body’s members to arise from the same uniform dust—this is wondrous.”
“For clay to receive life, move by itself throughout the inhabited world, and build—this is wondrous. For clay to teach and speak, to work as a craftsman and to rule—this is wondrous. O most ignorant Jews, from where did Adam come? Did not God take dust from the earth and fashion this wondrous and marvelous creature? Clay, then, can be transformed into an eye, yet a Virgin cannot give birth to a Son? That which is far more impossible by human standards came to pass, but this birth from a Virgin cannot come to pass?” A beautiful description, my beloved, a very beautiful description indeed. Saint Cyril takes his inspiration from Job 38:14, where God speaks of a piece of clay, clay of a single uniform kind. Of course, Saint Cyril did not possess our present knowledge of the many elements contained in matter. They knew of them, but not to the extent that we do today. They certainly knew of calcium, carbon, and iron. All these are elements of nature. When we speak of dust, we do not mean merely the soil that I can bend down and pick up from the ground. We mean the elements of nature. The human being is composed of these natural elements; that requires no proof. Why? First, because we grow: we are nourished and grow through the elements of nature, taking in substances like those of which we are made. I was formed from water—from hydrogen and oxygen—and I take in water in order to live. I take in iron in order to live,
and so on. And when a person dies, he is dissolved back into the elements from which he was composed. Therefore, there is no need to prove that man is made from the elements of nature, from this creation, from the earth—putting “earth” in quotation marks, meaning matter. So now, from this matter, from this clay—listen to what Saint Cyril says—God makes bones, lungs, soft lungs, and the various forms of the bodily members. He takes this clay and gives it a soul; He gives it life. He takes this clay, which moves by itself, of its own power, and it builds and constructs.
This clay comes forth and teaches and speaks. This clay comes forth and works as a craftsman. It designs buildings and reigns as king. Clay does all these things. Tell me, then, O most ignorant Jews, who is this clay? Is it not Adam? Tell me, he says: God made man from clay, from the earth, and this clay possesses all these faculties—it sees, hears, understands, walks, designs buildings, and does everything else. You accept this, and yet you say that it is impossible for a new man to be born of a Virgin, in whom all the elements needed for a human being are already present?
Is this impossible for God? God does the one, and God also does the other.
“Let us remember, brethren”—this is paragraph thirty-one—“this weapon, and let us use it in our defense. Let us wield it against the heretics who teach that the coming of Christ was merely an appearance. Let us also reject with contempt those who say that the Savior was born of a man and a woman, those who have dared to claim that He came from Joseph and Mary because it is written, ‘And he took his wife,’” and so forth. We must not tolerate the heretics who say that the coming of Christ was merely an appearance. Their reasoning is that a Virgin cannot give birth and that, consequently, His coming was only imaginary. This is the heresy known as Docetism, which afflicted the Church: the teaching that Christ had a body only in appearance,
only as an illusion, and therefore that He suffered nothing upon the Cross, but that everything which took place happened only in appearance. Saint Cyril says that we should reject all these people with contempt, as well as those who say that Christ—because all these heresies deny His birth from a Virgin—was born naturally of a man and a woman, of Joseph and Mary. And on what do they base this? On the words of the Evangelist Matthew in Matthew 1:24: “And he took his wife.” That is the basis of their claim. This view survives to the present day. There are heretics, people who also call themselves Christians, who say that Christ had…
that He had Joseph as His father, His natural father; in other words, that He was the offspring of Joseph and Mary, the result of natural conception. This is still said today. Protestants say it—or rather, certain branches of Protestantism deny the Virgin Birth and claim scriptural support from the words, “And he took his wife.” The first to formulate this accusation was Celsus, who lived long ago, and afterward Porphyry. Origen wrote against Celsus. Celsus was the first to teach this particular claim in opposition, of course, to Christianity. And now, my dear ones, Saint Cyril presents his arguments.
In the Old Testament, the word “wife” can mean a betrothed woman, not a wife in the full marital sense. But since this needs to be examined more fully, Saint Cyril devotes an entire paragraph to it.

οι υπόλοιποι από τους αδελφούς των θα επιστρέψουν. Οι λοιποί, όταν λέει εδώ «οι λοιποί», πρόκειται περί του λείμματος —λάμδα, έψιλον γιώτα περισπωμένη, δύο μι, άλφα—, θα πει το υπόλοιπον του πληθυσμού, το υπόλοιπον του λαού. Δηλαδή ποιο υπόλοιπο; Εκείνοι που θα έχουν μείνει πιστοί. Αυτοί, λέει, θα επιστρέψουν, αυτοί θα αναγνωρίσουν τον Μεσσία. Βλέπετε; «Και τι είναι τα μνήστρα της Παρθένου;» Ο Άγιος Κύριλος —δέστε τον στη διαλογική διατύπωση—, όπως αντιλαμβάνεστε, είναι θαυμάσιος. «Και τι είναι τα μνήστρα της Παρθένου, της Αγίας Νύμφης;» Ποια είναι, λέει, τα μνήστρα της Παρθένου, της Αγίας Νύμφης;
εμαυτώ εν πίστει». Θα σε μνηστευτώ, διά τον εαυτό μου θα σε μνηστευτώ, «εμαυτώ εν πίστει». Ποιος θα μνηστευθεί εδώ; Ο Θεός την Παρθένον. Και ποια τα μνήστρα; Η πίστις. Προσέξτε παρακάτω. «Και Ελισάβετ λαλούσα προς αυτήν ομοίως λέγει· και μακαρία η πιστεύσασα ότι έσται τελείωσις τοις λελαλημένοις αυτή παρά Κυρίου». Είναι από τον Λουκά 1, 45. Και ευτυχισμένη εκείνη η οποία θα πιστεύσει ότι έτσι θα της γίνουν αυτά που της υπεσχέθησαν. Δηλαδή της Θεοτόκου. Τι είπε η Ελισάβετ, επί παραδείγματι;
Εεε...
Ένα δώρο εκείνος σ’ εκείνη, εκείνη σ’ εκείνον. Ποιο, λοιπόν, τώρα το δώρο; Προσέξτε εδώ. Τι ζητάει, τι ζητάει ο Θεός; Ζητάει την πίστη. Τι λέγει ο Αρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ στη Θεοτόκο; Της λέγει ότι: «Πνεύμα Άγιον...» «Πώς θα μου γίνει αυτό;» «Πνεύμα Άγιον», λέει, «θα σε επισκεφθεί». Διότι εκείνη λέει: «Αφού άνδρα ου γινώσκω». «Πνεύμα Άγιον θα σε επισκεφθεί και θα κληθεί Υιός Υψίστου» κλπ., κλπ. Και τι είπε η Θεοτόκος; «Γένοιτό μοι κατά το ρήμα σου». Είθε να μου γίνει όπως το είπες. Ό,τι θέλει ο Θεός. «Ιδού, ιδού η δούλη Κυρίου». Δηλαδή, τι προσέφερε η Θεοτόκος; Προσέφερε την πίστη. Ιδού τα μνήστρα, να το δώρον. Ποιο δώρο;
Και ότι το θαύμα αυτό το δημιούργησε ο Θεός. Ορθώς, διότι είχε υποσχεθεί ο Θεός στον Αβραάμ και δεν το έκανε γρήγορα· άφηνε να γερνάει και να γερνάει η Σάρα, ακριβώς για να κατοχυρωθεί και κατοχυρωθεί το θαύμα. Λοιπόν, το δέχεστε αυτό. Τι είναι τώρα δυσκολότερον, να γεννήσει μία νεάζουσα Παρθένος ή μία γυναίκα με φυσικόν, εννοείται, τρόπο, αλλά να είναι 90 χρονών και να μην υπάρχει πλέον δυνατότητα τεκνογονίας; Θα μου πεις ότι αυτό το δικό μας είναι θαύμα, μάλιστα, της Σάρας. Σου λέω ότι και το άλλο είναι θαύμα. Πώς λες ότι ο Θεός εργάστηκε το ένα θαύμα;
Υιός του Θεού. Πηγαίνει παρακάτω. «Οι Ιουδαίοι, ποίον δε εστί μάλλον δυσκολώτερον, Παρθένον γεννήσαι ή ράβδον εις ζώον ψυχωθήναι; Ομολογείται ότι επί Μωυσέως ευθυτάτη ράβδος οφιοειδής γενομένη φοβερά ην τω ρίψαντι, και ο πρώην κατέχων την ράβδον έφυγεν αυτήν ως δράκοντα· δράκων γαρ ην τη αληθεία. Έφυγε δε ου φοβηθείς ο κατείχεν, αλλά αγωνιάσας τον μεταβεβληκότα. Οδόντας είχεν η ράβδος και δρακοντικούς οφθαλμούς. Εκ ράβδου τοίνυν οφθαλμοί βλέποντες εκφύονται και εκ παρθενικής γαστρός παιδίον ου γεννάται Θεού θέλοντος;» Τι λέτε εσείς;
