Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem argues that the Son of God is not ashamed to assume human flesh because He is Himself the creator of the human body. The Wisdom who builds herself a house is interpreted as the divine Logos preparing the Theotokos and the human nature He would assume. Both contempt for the body through extreme asceticism and its destruction through Nicolaitan hedonism reject God’s creation, whereas Christianity receives the body with reverence and responsibility.

My dear friends, we are still in the twelfth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, at paragraph 26: “The Maker of these very members is not ashamed to assume flesh from such members. And who tells us this? The Lord says to Jeremiah, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; and before you came forth from the womb, I sanctified you.’ He, then, who touches human beings as He forms them and is not ashamed—would He be ashamed when the Holy Flesh was being formed for Him, the veil of His Divinity?”

It is God who, within the womb, continues even now to form infants, as it is written in Job: “Did You not milk me like milk and curdle me like cheese? You clothed me with skin and flesh and knit me together with bones and sinews.”

This is a very beautiful paragraph, my dear friends. As you will remember, we had reached the third question: How was He born of a Virgin? Or, more precisely, is it possible for the Son of God to be born of a Virgin? Can a virgin give birth? This is the third question Saint Cyril takes up, after the first two have been discussed. One of those great questions was how God could become man, and so forth. I will not repeat them. Here Saint Cyril says something remarkable: the Son of God is not ashamed—“He is not ashamed”—to assume flesh.

He is not ashamed to assume members like ours, precisely because He Himself is the Maker of the members of the human body. As his argument, Saint Cyril cites what God Himself says concerning Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.”

“Before I formed you,” God says to Jeremiah, “I knew you in your mother’s womb; and before you came forth from your mother’s womb, I had sanctified you.” Saint Cyril then says: He who forms and creates human beings, touching—that is, coming into contact with—the members of the human body, and is not ashamed to do so, would He then be ashamed to take for Himself this Holy Flesh with which He would clothe Himself, this veil of His Divinity?

But notice why Saint Cyril keeps speaking of whether He “would be ashamed.” Here we see the influence of philosophy. Since we previously mentioned the questions we were resolving, this is a good opportunity to return to the subject. Remember that I spoke to you about Plotinus. What did Plotinus, the so-called saint of philosophy, a Neoplatonist after the time of Christ, do? They say that whenever he ate, he wept. Why did he weep? Because he was compelled to eat and sustain a material body that, in his view, had no value. And when he looked at the members of his body, they say that he was ashamed and said, “What a disgrace!”

“I have these bodily members. Why?” Because both Platonism and Neoplatonism exalted the spirit and condemned the body, matter itself. And so, since I am compelled to possess a material body, how did my spirit come to be imprisoned within it? The Platonic philosophers were forced to devise theories explaining why. I am therefore compelled to carry my prison around with me—to have this body of which I am ashamed—just as a convict would be ashamed of his prison chains. I am ashamed to eat because I am sustaining a condition unworthy of me as a human being.

It is an indignity to my spirit. These demonic doctrines, these demonic teachings—demonic in the fullest and most literal sense—passed into the lives of ordinary people. As you know, philosophical conclusions and ways of life always descend from the top, from the philosopher, to the base of the pyramid, meaning the people. They become part of their lived experience; they become proverbs and common sayings. They circulate among the people and shape them from within. The Christian, therefore, must confront such conditions.

A Father of the Church—in this case, Saint Cyril—had to confront these ideas. Indeed, a little further on he will tell us, “The Greeks and the Jews accuse us.” He therefore had to face opposition on two fronts: the Jews, with their diseased and distorted notions, and the Greeks—the pagans and idolaters—as bearers of philosophy and the like. That is why he says here: He who said to Jeremiah, “I formed you within your mother’s womb, and before you came forth from your mother’s womb, I sanctified you”—would He now be ashamed to clothe Himself in flesh?

You understand that if I accept the philosophy of Plato or the Neoplatonists, I cannot accept the Incarnation. For if man seeks to rid himself of his flesh and body, how much more degrading would it be, according to that philosophy, for God to become man? If man desires to cast off human nature—that is, his condition in the flesh—how much more would this apply to God? Do you see? So tell me now: what does Platonism have to do with Christianity? Some people say, “I am an ideologue”—although, of course, they mean something else by that—or they speak of “ideology,” or say, “I am an idealist.” An idealist! What do they mean by an idealist?

The Christian is not an idealist. The idealist is the Platonist, the one who believes in the Ideas. Which ideas? The Platonic Ideas. My dear friends, Christianity and Platonism are 180 degrees apart. Our Church fought against these positions—fought them in the most literal sense. In the person of Origen, the Church condemned Platonism. We must realize this and understand it clearly. After all, I am demonstrating it to you; you can see it for yourselves. Some may read Saint Cyril without suspecting any of this. Someone may take up his sacred text and say, “Very well, this is what Cyril writes. But why does he write it?” He was confronting precisely these philosophical positions that had penetrated human thought. Can God touch matter? Yes. Why? Because He is the Creator of matter. Matter is not the creation of some evil, dark, perverse god called Ahriman. It is not Ahriman, the god of darkness, who creates matter. It is the God of light, the holy God, who creates both spirits and matter: “the God of the spirits and of all flesh.” Do you understand this? Why do the sacred hymnographers make this distinction? Actually, this phrase is not originally from the sacred hymnographers. It comes from somewhere in the Old Testament, though I do not remember which book.

It says, “the God”—it must be in one of the Wisdom books, though I do not remember—“the God of the spirits and of all flesh.” The Fathers simply take the phrase and incorporate it into a hymn. Why is it stressed here that God is the Creator both of spirits, which all these philosophers regard as something higher, and of flesh, which they regard as something lower? There is one Creator—one. And do not imagine that these ideas have disappeared, my dear friends. Books expressing such views are still being written today, attacking Christianity in the name of idealism and other nonsense. So I am not a Platonist. I may take pride in the fact that Plato was Greek, but I am not a Platonist; I am a Christian. Let us understand that.

Plato offered what he could in his own age. That is over. Plato has had his day. His thought may still have value in certain other fields, but Plato has had his day. Christ reigns; Plato does not. Therefore, Saint Cyril says, God is not ashamed: “He who touches human beings as He forms them and is not ashamed.” He touches, comes into contact with, and handles human nature without shame. Why should He be ashamed? Where could any cause for shame be found? “Would He then be ashamed when the Holy Flesh was being formed for Him, the veil of His Divinity?” When He was forming the human flesh with which He Himself would be clothed, would He be ashamed?

Notice the words, “when the Holy Flesh was being formed.” Recall the Book of Proverbs. Wisdom says, “She built herself a house,” and established it upon seven pillars. Wisdom built—with an omega at the beginning of the Greek verb—she built a house for herself. What is the house that Wisdom builds for herself? My dear friends, it is the Most Holy Theotokos.

From her He would take flesh. Wisdom—the personal, hypostatic Wisdom, that is, the Wisdom of God, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, God the Word (Logos)—builds a house for Himself. That house is the Theotokos, and it is also the human nature He would assume from her. Who built this house? God the Word Himself, the Creator of all things. That is one point. Now for another. How does Saint Cyril describe, almost parenthetically, this flesh? He says, “Would He then be ashamed when the Holy Flesh was being formed for Him, the veil of His Divinity?” Would He be ashamed? What, then, does Saint Cyril call Christ’s human flesh here? “The veil of His Divinity.”

Please pay attention to this parenthetical phrase he inserts. In the Epistle to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul speaks of Christ’s human nature and calls it a veil. He says there in Hebrews, “That is, the veil, His flesh.” “That is” means “in other words.” The veil of His flesh. For us, we might say that the veil—the word means a curtain—was a type of the flesh that the Son of God would assume. His flesh would be like a curtain covering His Divinity.

Solomon’s Temple, meaning the main sanctuary, was separated from the Holy of Holies by a veil. God gave the design Himself. There was no human architect; God was the architect. He told Solomon, “You shall make this and that.” But Solomon did not write or devise the plans himself. Moses had handed them down. And God said to Moses, “Take care to make everything exactly according to what—pay attention—you see upon Sinai.” God showed him models and patterns. The word “pattern” appears in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Moses saw patterns, models.

Moses recorded them, and on the basis of those patterns Solomon built the Temple four hundred years later. Yes. And what did God say? “Take care to make exactly what you saw—nothing more and nothing less.” How does the Apostle Paul speak of this? In the Epistle to the Hebrews he says, “They were patterns of the good things to come.”

The good things to come—yes. Now come with me into the Temple. It was an almost oblong structure, though not extremely long. The Temple was about thirty-three meters long. It was small, and narrow as well—perhaps five or six, or five to seven meters wide, somewhere around that. I cannot remember the exact dimensions at this moment, because I am drawing on so much material as I speak. I do not have notes in front of me for all these details. Pay attention.

It was divided into two parts: the main sanctuary, which was called the Holy Place, and the innermost part, the Holy of Holies. There were windows in the main sanctuary. There were no windows in the Holy of Holies; it was dark, and there was a veil, a curtain. This is the veil that was torn in two when Christ died upon the Cross. This very veil. Its tearing was a sign, as the Evangelists record, because, my dear friends, an earthquake does not tear a piece of cloth. An earthquake splits a wall, not fabric. Yet during the earthquake the fabric was torn in two, opening the way within.

The Holy of Holies became visible within. This means that no one tore the veil; rather, the earthquake did it—that is, God did it. What was that veil? It was a symbol of the flesh of the Son of God. A symbol—pay attention to this. And what was the dark sanctuary, where there was no light? It symbolized the divinity, which is shrouded in deep darkness—the darkness of unknowing. You do not know the essence of God. Then, on this side, there is the brightly lit temple. What covers the dark sanctuary, the Holy of Holies? The veil. It is the flesh of Christ.

The flesh of God the Word (Logos). Now, because the prototype...

The flesh of Christ was torn upon the Cross, for He was crucified: His flesh was pierced, He was nailed to the Cross, He was subjected to violence. The antitype—the corresponding figure—is torn in the Temple by the earthquake. That is why the flesh of Christ is called the veil. As I have explained at some length from the historical background so that you might understand, the Apostle Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews: “That is, the veil, that is, His flesh.” And Saint Cyril says, “the veil of the divinity.” My dear friends, if one pays close attention, these are signs of how the prophecies, the types, and the events are woven together. It is astonishing—one might say, a single unfolding sequence.

They are joined together in such a way that we are left amazed. Now, the veil is the flesh. I have told you this before, but let us say it again: the flesh both reveals and conceals. What does the veil in the ancient Temple reveal? It reveals that the Holy of Holies lies within. And what does it conceal? The Holy of Holies. It both reveals and conceals it. In other words, it tells you, “Something hidden lies within,” while at the same time keeping it hidden. In the same way, Christ’s human nature reveals His divinity. In the person of Christ, the angels saw God for the first time.

At the same time, it remains a veil; that is, it conceals the nature of God, because the nature of God cannot be disclosed within created existence, whether spiritual or material, for it surpasses all creation. And now, my dear friends, I come to something very important: God is not ashamed to assume human nature. Why? If only you knew how profound this is. Of course, we have two extremes. Pay attention to what these two extremes are. The first is the Platonic position: “I am ashamed of my body.” That is one extreme. But, as the saying goes, extremes meet. The Fathers say this too: extremes meet. Whether I go in this direction or in the other, in reality they...

The extremes meet; they come together and form a circle. Do you know what the other extreme is? It was the doctrine of the Nicolaitans: “to misuse the flesh.” These are the Nicolaitans whom Holy Scripture condemns by name in the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation. The Nicolaitans. Do you know who their true descendants are? A very modern religious sect called “The Children of God,” or “The Children of Mo.” It is that sect you know of, which is active in Greece: “The Children of Mo.” Mu and omega. It is an abbreviation of Moses: they shorten the name and call themselves “The Children of Mo.” Pay attention.

Plotinus is ashamed of his body. The Nicolaitans say, “We shall destroy our body through pleasure, because it is evil.” It is really the same thing, the same philosophical position, except that they destroy the body through pleasures. Plotinus does not eat; he is extremely abstinent, and he destroys his body through excessive abstinence. The Nicolaitans likewise destroy the body through an excess of pleasures. In our time—or rather, our age itself is Nicolaitan. We see it expressed in our young people and in those who drink, while its most extreme expression is drugs.

Of course, there are less extreme forms as well: “Let us eat and drink; why worry? Let us eat and drink.” It is a hedonistic age. Yet this hedonistic age creates so many problems of health and so many spiritual problems. The prevalence of drugs is the culmination of Nicolaitanism. For what do I seek to experience through drugs? Pleasure. I will journey into paradises—false paradises—by false means. This is Nicolaitanism. It is the opposite extreme, but in reality the extremes meet. Both amount to a rejection of matter, a rejection of the flesh, and that is a dreadful thing. God has a relationship with the flesh. And so the holy and upright person—the true...

Christian—regards the flesh as a creation of God and is not ashamed of the body. Indeed, Saint Cyril will tell us this below in a beautiful description within the same paragraph. But before we go further, he has one more argument, and I am very much afraid that this argument may take up perhaps our entire remaining time. Pay close attention to it!

Saint Cyril gives many examples and many arguments. I believe they are useful to us, so I do not pass over them. As you see, we are analyzing them as far as possible, so that we may gain the clearest and fullest picture we can. “It is God who, within the womb, continues even to this day to fashion infants, as it is written in Job: ‘Did You not pour me out like milk and curdle me like cheese? You clothed me with skin and flesh and knit me together with bones and sinews.’”

This passage is from the Book of Job, chapter 10, verses 10 through 11. And Saint Cyril says—pay attention, for this is an exceptionally important passage and an exceptionally important statement by Saint Cyril, one to which I shall not be able to give you a precise answer. I say that beforehand. Forgive me: he says it is written in Job. Since God is concerned with human nature and human flesh, it is God who, even now, creates infants within the womb of every woman.

How important this passage from Saint Cyril is! God, “God who is within the womb,” within the womb of the woman, “even until now,” even to this very day, “creates the infants.” In other words, God creates infants; God fashions each infant there and then. This means that God intervenes in the creation of the human person. That is the question before us. Needless to say, there is much we do not know about this subject. I once had a wonderful discussion lasting many hours with Father Nikodimos Bilalis. It would be rather amusing if this recording were to reach his ears.

He came to our monastery, and because Father Nikodimos devotes himself to supporting large families—indeed, he is the driving force behind PEFYP, the Association of Large Families in Athens—and because he is also a scholar of literature and a theologian, he has studied the subject of children from a theological perspective. We had an extensive discussion about how children come into being. Does God intervene, or does He not? He told me that what certain modern works of dogmatic theology say is not true. They ask: how could God intervene in an unlawful conception? Suppose, for example, that two people commit fornication and a child is conceived. Does God intervene there? This seems somewhat improper and strange to us, so we rule it out, and so forth. Or does God still create, even though we know that God no longer creates anything? Whatever He created, He created out of nothing. How, then, do new souls come into being? The bodies may come from what already exists, but souls come from non-being. How does this happen? These are very serious problems when we attempt to give an answer. If you search the works of dogmatic theology, you will not find an answer. He told me, “I found statements of this kind in these Fathers—in Saint Gregory the Theologian and others. I also found the answer in a work of Dogmatics and Symbolics by Professor Romanides.”

While preparing this subject, I too found this passage, and I want to let him know that I found it in Job and saw how Saint Cyril interprets it. What does Saint Cyril say? He says, “It is God who, even to this day, creates infants within their mothers’ wombs”—even until now, to this very day. The wording is striking. And as his argument, he takes the passage from Job that I mentioned. Let us examine the passage from Job, and then we shall return to Saint Cyril’s statement. Job, then, my dear friends, says to God: “Did You not pour me out like milk?” I shall translate the passage first, and then we shall explain it. “Did You not pour me out like milk and curdle me like cheese? You clothed me with skin and flesh, formed my bones, and stretched sinews through me.” Consider what this passage means. “Did You not pour me out like milk?” What do we do? We go to the udder of a cow, place our hand upon it, grasp the teat, and squeeze. Pay attention: we squeeze it, and the milk flows out as liquid.

This is an image of the emission of semen. You took that seed, then, after drawing it out—you drew out the human being—and the seed flowed forth. You curdled it like cheese, covered it with skin and flesh, gave it sinews, and fashioned me. To put it simply, You fashioned me, a human being, from that fluid seed and made me what I am. Who did this? You did—You, O God. You know that Holy Scripture contains expressions such as, “Your hands made me and fashioned me.”

“Your hands made me and fashioned me.” And now let us consider how we should understand this passage. Should we understand it to mean that God fashioned Adam and Eve with His hands? Adam was fashioned by the hands of God, and so was Eve. Eve was fashioned by the hands of God from Adam’s side. How, then, are we to understand this now? Was I—a later human being, a descendant of Adam—fashioned by the hands of God in the persons of Adam and Eve, or does God...

use His hands directly to fashion me personally? I think that until now we have understood the passage in the first sense. I believe that whenever you read it, you understood it as I did: that God made me with His hands, or that I am the work of His hands, but only in the person of Adam. For we assumed that God no longer intervenes directly in my coming into being from my mother and father. But now, through this passage from Job and Saint Cyril’s interpretation of it—and through whatever other Fathers have spoken about this little-known passage, for this teaching appears to be largely unknown and unexamined—it seems that we must view similar passages, such as “Your hands made me and fashioned me,” from another perspective:

namely, that You Yourself fashion me within my mother’s womb. It is a difficult passage, and perhaps someone may have an objection or a counterargument. As I told you, I am explaining the matter as I presently see it, but I have not researched it thoroughly. I am telling you only what I can see. So please forgive me if some error has been made here, or perhaps some unfortunate wording has kept us from understanding it properly. But pay attention to something else. Before I proceed to mention other passages from Holy Scripture that support the position we are now considering, let us first examine an objection.

What does God take and fashion? He takes the material already provided. What material? What Job describes: “You poured me out”; that is, You took the seed and fashioned me—the seed of my father—and made me a human being. So the materials are already present. What materials? Those supplied by my mother and father. You take what You originally fashioned but which is now already present, and from it You create the human person. Very well. But do You also create my soul? Do You make a new soul? Does my soul bear any relation to the souls of my father and mother? Neither father nor mother feels that anything is missing from them. They do not feel that their souls have been diminished in any way. No, their souls remain undiminished. Does God, then, create new souls? We have said that God does not create new things. So how does this work? And how am I to explain the fact that I bear my parents’ physical characteristics?

I resemble my father. My face resembles his. I resemble my mother as well. Clearly, then, I have received material from them. Yes, we have said this: God took their material and fashioned me.

Yet I also have characteristics in my soul—badness or goodness, this or that trait, a psychological or spiritual characteristic of my father or my mother, or of both. How is this to be explained? It is difficult. Allow me to suggest that we think of it in this way. I cannot give you an easy answer, but I would suppose—and I openly tell you that I do not know—that two things take place. God takes elements and characteristics from the father’s soul and the mother’s soul, those which the parents provide, and fashions both the body and the soul. Besides, dogmatic theology offers a certain theory. You see, there are theories because we do not know. It is called the theory of propagation by layering. That is its name in dogmatic theology. Suppose I take a plant—I cannot cut off a branch, because it will not take root if I plant it—

Instead, I take a branch from the mother plant, bend it down, bury part of it in the soil, and leave the other end, the tip of the branch, above ground. The part of the branch beneath the soil puts out roots, while at the same time it continues to be nourished by the mother plant. Once it has developed sufficient roots, we cut off that branch, because it can now live on its own. We then say that we have a new plant produced by layering.

By layering. This example from the plant kingdom has given rise to the theory. We do not know for certain.

That is its official name, as it is written in dogmatic theology: that the human person comes into being in a similar way, receiving characteristics from his father and mother while at the same time possessing an existence of his own. We might therefore say that God creates the soul here. But how does the soul bear the characteristics of the father and mother? Evidently it receives material from the parents—spiritual ‘material,’ so to speak; I put the word in quotation marks. Then again, my dear friends, how do we account for children born with abnormalities? There are congenital deformities. My father had syphilis, my mother had syphilis, and I was born with a deformity. A congenital malformation occurred. Would someone then say that God caused the malformation,

that He intervened and fashioned a malformed child? Children are born with deformities because their parents were sinful—or perhaps not sinful at all, but certain factors intervened, such as atomic radiation, powerful rays, gamma rays, or something of that kind, and these caused the embryo to develop abnormally. They damaged it. I think the matter should be understood in this way: God creates human beings—‘Your hands made me and fashioned me’; ‘You poured me out like milk’—but He takes the materials supplied by the parents, the materials that are already there. Let us use an example: God builds a house.

What bricks will you bring Him? Will you bring Him bricks made by one company or another—from Elassona, Katerini, or Larissa? What will you bring Him? And we say, ‘These bricks are stronger than those.’ Thus, God is indeed the builder, but He receives the materials from the parents themselves. So we may say that God fashions us from whatever we offer Him. Yet it appears that God truly intervenes and creates each individual human being. This reveals God’s love: He fashions every human being directly. Perhaps many who hear this will say that these are new ideas. My dear friends, they are new to me as well. I did not know them either.

They are new to me as well. Shall we go a little further?

In the Book of the Wisdom of Sirach there is an astonishing passage, which we examined at the monastery the summer before last.

In the first chapter, verse 14, it says: ‘The beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and with the faithful she was created together with them in the womb.’ Wisdom here is always Wisdom existing as a person—that is, God the Word (Logos), as the Wisdom of God. It says, ‘with the faithful, in the womb’—in the womb of their mother, where they are just beginning their being, their existence.

These people would become faithful. You may tell me that a distinction is being made here. ‘She was created together with them’—created together with them. This is an astonishing passage, truly astonishing. God the Word comes—but here it is not simply God the Word; it is God the Word made man. Of course, the passage says this beforehand, prophetically, but that makes no difference. He comes to be created together with each human being in the womb of that person’s mother. For God the Word was also created according to His human nature. What is that scandalous passage which Arius seized upon and raised like a banner? It is in the eighth chapter of Proverbs, where Wisdom says, ‘He created me.’

‘Before His works,’ the passage concludes, ‘He created me.’ Arius argued that the Wisdom of God—that is, the Word of God—is a creature. Therefore, he said, Jesus Christ is a creature and is not God. But the words ‘He created me’ refer to the human nature. Thus the divinity comes, assuming human nature, to be created together with the human person in the mother’s womb. This, my dear friends, is the culmination: that He who is from God should be created together with me. How astonishing! Incomprehensible—incomprehensible and majestic! How could Plato ever rise to this? You may ask, why bring Plato into it?

Could Plato ever rise to this? How could Plato ever have imagined that God would be created together with the human person in the mother’s womb? My dear friends, these are majestic truths. Do you understand? I have several examples to give you, passages which I mentioned then, and I still have my notes from that time. Here one sees the Wisdom of God becoming, as it were, a cell within the human person, becoming joined to our very nature. Before I go on to give you those passages, let me speak of this cell, this union with the human person. Christ becomes this, as we heard in the reading from this past Sunday, from Ephesians 2:15,

in the following passage: ‘That He might create the two in Himself into one new man, making peace.’ Christ, it says, creates the two in Himself. Who are the two? The Jews and the Greeks, those near to God and those far from Him. He creates them into one new man, making peace—establishing peace between the two peoples. ‘Create’—notice that verb—‘into one new man.’ Basil the Great explains it in this way: ‘Perhaps “came to be” is said of the first coming into being of man, while “was created” refers to the second coming into being, his rebirth through the grace of Christ.’ The expression ‘came to be’ is from the verb ‘to become.’ The Apostle Paul uses it a little earlier, in a preceding verse of the reading. According to Basil, ‘came to be’ refers to man’s first coming into being, while ‘was created’ refers to the second coming into being, his rebirth through the grace of Christ. This ‘coming into being,’ becoming one essence, is what in simple modern Greek we call—and I have often mentioned it—a cell. That is why I quoted the passage to you. A cell: that is, Christ becomes, as it were, a cell in my mother’s womb.

‘Created together,’ it says, ‘in the womb with the faithful.’ In other words, He comes into being there, as though sharing the same essence with me, because Christ assumed this very human nature. Christ assumed human nature and comes into being together with me; He is created together with me in my mother’s womb. How can we understand this? I cannot tell you. These are very profound matters. We cannot comprehend them. They are beyond our reach. And then the Lord says to Jeremiah, as further evidence: ‘And the word of the Lord came to me: Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; and before you came forth from the womb, I sanctified you.’ I sanctified you before you came out of your mother’s womb. ‘I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’ And concerning John the Baptist: ‘Many will rejoice at his birth.’

‘He will be great before the Lord, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.’ Then concerning Paul, in Galatians 1:15: ‘God, who set me apart’—to set apart means to separate—who set me apart ‘from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me.’ He set me apart from my mother’s womb. And concerning all the faithful: ‘But as many as received Him.’ That is why the Wisdom of Solomon says, ‘with the faithful’—together with the faithful. What does John say in the first chapter, in John 1:12? ‘But as many as received Him.’ Those who received Him—that is, believed in Him—‘to them He gave the authority’

‘to become children of God’—they will become children of God—‘to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.’ What, then, do we see here, my dear friends? We see something astonishing. If God Himself—God—goes so far as to create me in my mother’s womb, then from the moment I become conscious of this, I do not know how I ought to feel. I do not know how I ought to feel, nor what my relationship with God, the Word of God, ought to be. This is a great mystery. And so, in light of these beautiful truths revealed to us by the Word of God, let us now speak about abortion. God fashions what is in the womb and is Himself created together with it.

He is created together with the human person. Then another human being comes, kills it, and throws it into the sewer. What a terrible thing! Forgive me if some may feel bitterness in their souls on hearing this. Let them come to metanoia, to repentance. God will forgive them; let them not do it again, and let them mourn what they have done. Indeed, my dear friends, all our social questions require a theological foundation. When we place them all upon that theological foundation, then we know what we must do—then, and only then. The human person will then stand with reverence and awe before all these things, precisely because he now knows what each thing truly is.

Let us go a little further. He continues: ‘There is nothing defiled in the constitution of the human body.’ Here Saint Cyril offers an explanation and clarification of what he has said: there is nothing filthy in the way the human being is made. You cannot be ashamed, nor can you say that God stoops to assume human nature—with genital organs, intestines, feces, and urine. Forgive me for speaking so plainly. But why do I say, ‘Forgive me’? Do you know why we say that? Because we have attached something shameful to these things; we have stamped them with the seal of wickedness. I say ‘urine’ and ‘feces,’ and then I say, ‘Forgive me.’ Why? Who made them? God made them.

When I say, ‘Forgive me,’ it shows that I am prejudiced. I prejudice both myself and the other person merely by saying it. Why should I, when these too are God’s creation? So we might ask: Would God truly go so far as to assume intestines and to have feces, saliva, and mucus? Yes, because ‘there is nothing defiled in the constitution of the human body’—nothing impure or filthy—‘unless you defile it through adulteries and acts of depravity.’ That is, unless you yourself defile this human constitution through your adulteries and immoral acts. Only what belongs to sin is defiled.

My body is not defiled. Sin defiles it; sin is what pollutes my body. Do you see what teachings these are, my dear friends? Could the human person discover these truths through philosophy alone? They are matters of revelation. Because man lacked revelation, he spoke of two opposing principles, despised the body, and regarded it as defiled. No, this cannot be right. From Buddhism to modern philosophical systems, please find me a single case in which the body is understood correctly. Find me one. There is none. Does not Buddhism also condemn the body? It does, because it is a natural religion. It has no revelation.

Where we have divine revelation, the place of the body is understood correctly. “He who formed Adam also formed Eve, and with divine hands He fashioned both male and female.” The One who made Adam also made Eve, and both man and woman were fashioned by divine hands. “None of the members of the body, having been fashioned from the beginning, is unclean.” No member of the body is unclean—not even the reproductive organs. By no means! Nor is semen unclean. Athanasius the Great wrote a letter to Amun which acquired canonical authority and is included in the Rudder. In other words, it has the authority of ecclesiastical law: it was incorporated into the Canons. That is what “canonical authority” means.

This letter of Athanasius the Great was codified in the laws of the Church. He was asked about nocturnal emissions, and Athanasius the Great replied that semen is created by God. It is not unclean. But what causes nocturnal emissions—the driving impulse—may often be unclean. What might that be? I ate too much or drank too much; that is, gluttony. I filled myself with evil images and fantasies. Perhaps I watched television until midnight and filled myself with sexually immoral images. Well, what do I expect will happen? What follows will follow. That, he says, is the sin. The semen itself is not unclean.

What is unclean is whatever set the whole thing in motion. And what does he say concerning Holy Communion? He says this: if you intend to receive Holy Communion, you should exercise self-restraint from the evening before, so that your desire is not strongly aroused. Then, if an emission does occur, it belongs simply to nature, as the body’s way of releasing what is in excess. It does no harm. Medicine, you see, tells us that this is a kind of safety valve: whatever is in excess is discharged. This may happen without any moral corruption, or through the envy of the devil and the demons—that is, the demons envy you and want to prevent you from receiving Holy Communion. For this reason, since these causes can become confused and we do not know which is at work, the Church gives us guidance.

We may know nothing at all. Was it caused by my own mind? Was it simply a matter of nature, or was it caused by demons? It is not easy to determine the cause. And the Church speaks with the greatest wisdom—for, as I have told you, all these things we encounter as Canons have a theological foundation, though people ask, “But what are these rules?” What does the Church say? You refrain from Holy Communion for only one day. You wake up on Sunday morning and this has happened to you; you do not receive Holy Communion that day. If there is a Divine Liturgy on Monday morning, you may receive then. The abstinence lasts for only one day. This is not because semen is dirty, but because the impulse that caused the emission is open to question. That is clear. And Athanasius the Great says in this letter that none of the body’s natural discharges is sinful. There is nothing unclean. Nasal mucus and urine are not dirty or unclean.

The same applies to menstruation. The blood is not unclean—pay attention to this. Nor is the woman unclean. In the Old Testament, that is, she is not unclean in her very being. A woman is not ontologically unclean. Could a woman ever be unclean because of this flow of blood? No. What, then? She was legally unclean. In the same way, a man with a discharge was legally unclean, although today we use that expression for someone suffering from a sexually transmitted disease. In this context, it refers to someone who has had a nocturnal emission. He immediately became unclean—legally unclean.

The woman was legally unclean; in other words, the Law declared her unclean. We need not look far for another example: consider the animals. If we were to interpret the Old Testament according to the mistaken ideas we have been discussing, we would immediately have to introduce dualism into the Old Testament. God forbid! For some animals are called clean and others unclean. The Law says: you may offer this animal in sacrifice, but not that one. Animals with divided hooves could be offered in sacrifice; those with undivided hooves could not. Thus the sheep, the goat, and the ox were clean animals, while the donkey and the horse were unclean animals. Why were they unclean? Their uncleanness was legal, not ontological. It did not mean that these animals were unclean in themselves. God made them. If they were ontologically unclean, we would have to say that there is a duality of powers in God’s creation.

«Πριν σε πλάσω», λέγει ο Θεός εις τον Ιερεμίαν, «σε γνωρίζω από την κοιλία της μάνας σου και πριν εξέλθεις από τη μήτρα της μάνας σου, εγώ σε έχω αγιάσει». Και έλεγε τώρα ο Άγιος Κύριλλος: Εκείνος, λοιπόν, που πλάττει τους ανθρώπους, τους δημιουργεί, και εφαπτόμενος, δηλαδή εγγίζει τα μέλη τα ανθρώπινα, και δεν ντρέπεται να το κάνει αυτό, άρα λοιπόν αυτήν την Αγία Σάρκα, την οποία ο ίδιος θα επενδυθεί, δηλαδή αυτό το καταπέτασμα της Θεότητος, θα ντρεπόταν να το χρησιμοποιήσει για τον εαυτό του;

Πατήρ της Εκκλησίας, εμπροκειμένω ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, έχει αντιμετωπίσει αυτές τις αντιλήψεις. Ναι, λίγο πιο κάτω θα μας πει: «Μας κατηγορούν οι Έλληνες και οι Ιουδαίοι». Έχει, λοιπόν, ένα διπλό μέτωπο να αντιμετωπίσει: τους Ιουδαίους με τις νοσηρές των αντιλήψεις, διαστραμμένες αντιλήψεις· έχει να αντιμετωπίσει και τους Έλληνας, τους εθνικούς, τους ειδωλολάτρας, ως φορείς της φιλοσοφίας κτλ. Γι’ αυτό λέγει εδώ: Εκείνος που είπε εις τον Ιερεμία, «Εγώ σε έπλασα στα σπλάχνα της μάνας σου και πριν εξέλθεις από τη μήτρα της μάνας σου, σε έχω αγιάσει», αυτός τώρα θα ντραπεί να φορέσει σάρκα;

Ο Πλάτων στην εποχή του έδωσε αυτό που έδωσε. Τέλειωσε. Εξόφλησε ο Πλάτων. Δεν εξόφλησε σαν κάποιους άλλους τομείς, αλλά εξόφλησε ο Πλάτων. Ο Χριστός βασιλεύει, δεν βασιλεύει ο Πλάτων. Συνεπώς, δεν ντρέπεται ο Θεός, λέγει: «Ο ουν εν τω πλάττειν ανθρώπους εφαπτόμενος και μη επαισχυνόμενος». Να εφάπτεται, να ακουμπάει, να εγγίζει την ανθρωπίνη φύση και να μην ντρέπεται. Γιατί να ντρέπεται; Η έννοια της ντροπής πού βρίσκεται; «Άρα εν τω πλάττεσθαι την Αγίαν Σάρκα, το καταπέτασμα της Θεότητος, δι’ εαυτόν επαισχύνετο;» Όταν, λοιπόν, κατεσκεύαζε την ανθρωπίνη του σάρκα, εκείνη που θα περιεβάλλετο, θα εντρέπετο;

Κι εγώ καινούργια τα βλέπω. Θέλετε να προχωρήσουμε λίγο;

Προ των έργων αυτού, καταλήγουμε, «έκτισέ με». Και έλεγε ο Άρειος ότι η Σοφία του Θεού, δηλαδή ο Λόγος του Θεού, είναι κτίσμα. Συνεπώς ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι κτίσμα και δεν είναι Θεός. Αυτό το «έκτισέ με» αναφέρεται στην ανθρωπίνη φύση. Συνεπώς εδώ έρχεται η Θεότης, παίρνοντας την ανθρωπίνη φύση, να συγκτιστεί με τον άνθρωπο στα σπλάχνα της μάνας. Αυτό, αγαπητοί μου, είναι το αποκορύφωμα. Δηλαδή, εκ του Θεού να συγκτιστεί μαζί με μένα. Πω πω! Ακατανόητο, ακατανόητο και μεγαλειώδες. Δηλαδή πού να το φτάσει ο Πλάτων; Θα μου πείτε, με τον Πλάτωνα να πάμε;
